Krista is on the phone today for a first day follow-up, and she's getting ghosted by a guy named Charlie. So in a few minutes, we're going to call him and see if I'll tell us why he's ghosting her and maybe get her a second date. But first, Krista, how long has it been? since you heard from Charlie?
Starting point is 00:03:01 Hi, yeah, it's been about six days, six days, texted twice. Did you guys, like, how did you leave the date? Did you have a plan to see each other again? I thought that we would. I guess it seemed like there was, yeah, potential for a call. I thought that it ended as well. But then again, I don't know, maybe there was, I made, this, well, I kind of made a mess at the event that we...
Starting point is 00:03:33 What do you mean by that? Okay, so, like, so we met at this, it was actually really cool. There was this rooftop astronomy event thing. Like, there were, like, all these telescopes, and there was, like, live jazz, and it was... Oh, wow. Yeah, no, it was amazing, and there were, like, cocktails and teacups in teapots, and we were, like, cocktails out of teacups. It was really cute.
Starting point is 00:03:58 That's really cute. Super cute. I am not the most graceful person, and I accidentally, I was, like, looking through this telescope, and I just accidentally knocked over this tray of the tea cups, and it landed. So there was this just broader guy there, and it's basically I spilled, like, a bunch of cocktails over this, like, really fancy star chart that's this, like, oh, man. Like, really coveted.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Yeah. And everyone saw and everyone gasped and it was really not cute. But, um, but actually, like, it's funny because Charlie was, like, really sweet about it and, like, blast about it and helped me clean it up with, you know, these, like, meager, like, cocktail napkins. It was, so I, I mean, I think, you know, that was not. great, but I still thought that, you know, we had
Starting point is 00:05:00 like a new home and I thought that things were going well. I'm glad he helped you clean up because what was he supposed to do? It would be like, oh, I'm not with her. In just the house. Exactly. That is pretty embarrassing, though. I'm sorry that happened to you. Yes, me too.
Starting point is 00:05:16 But it's like, yeah, not the first time, not the last. Sure, okay. Did the date continue past the rooftop or was that the spot? yeah no we we like talked after that super embarrassing incident and like I don't know we we had a Uber home we like talked about music and I just I thought there was a spark I mean I know I need a mess but like I was really nervous and I'm like I said I'm kind of a clumsy person so I don't know I just I think that I really hope he gives me another chance well how did he seem
Starting point is 00:05:53 afterwards, like in the Uber and stuff. Was he being different with you? No, we were, like, having, like, cute conversation. And, yeah, it felt very neat, cute. Okay. All right, well, we'll try to figure it out for you. We'll play a song. Come back and then call him and see if he'll tell us
Starting point is 00:06:09 why he's ghosting you and maybe get you a second date, okay? All right. All right. We'll get your first day follow up next. Culture eats strategy for breakfast. I would love for you to share your breakdown on pivoting. We feel sometimes like we're leaving a part of us behind when we enter a new space, but we're just building. On a recent episode of Culture Raises Us, I was joined by Valicia Butterfield, media founder, political strategist, and tech powerhouse for a powerful conversation on storytelling, impact, and the intersections of culture and leadership.
Starting point is 00:06:42 I am a free black woman who worked really hard to be able to say that. I'd love for you to break down. Why was so important for you to do C? You can't win as something. thing you didn't create. From the Obama White House to Google to the Grammys, Malicia's journey is a masterclass in shifting culture and using your voice to spark change. A very fake, capital-driven environment and society will have a lot of people tell half-truths. I'm telling you, I'm on the energy committee.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Like, if the energy is not right, we're not doing it, whatever that it is. Starting point is 00:08:18 Kicking off this month, I'll be bringing you all my greatest fear-inducing horror games from Resident Evil to Silent Hill, me and Tony bringing back fire team on Left for Dead 2, and we're just going to be going over some of the greats. Starting point is 00:08:36 The umbral reliquary invites any and all fooling, brave enough, to peruse its many curiosities, but take heed, all sales are final. Weekly horror side quest written and narrated by yours
Starting point is 00:08:52 truly with a full episode read and a commentary special and we will cap it off with horror movie battle royale jason versus freddie michael myers versus the eightie thing with the little tongue muster october we're doing it halloween style listen to the trap nurse podcast from the black effect podcast network on the i heart radio app apple podcast or wherever you get your podcast right in the middle of your first eight follow up if you're just joining us christa is on the phone and she's getting ghosted by a dude named charlie so we're about to call him and see if he'll tell us why he's ghosting her and maybe get her a second date. But before we do that, Krista, why don't you break down your situation for us again real quick?
Starting point is 00:09:27 Yeah, so I met Charlie at this astronomy event with, like, telescopes and all this stuff. And while we were there, I, like, filled a bunch of drinks over this, like, star chart, and maybe that was the reason. But, like, I don't know, we just, like, clicked even after that and took an Uber home and, like, chatted. Did the Star Tart ruin the event? I hope not. I mean, I'm just curious. I know that the guy who was like running it was really upset. Oh.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Yeah, no, it was definitely like not the thing to do. All right. Well, we'll see if that is the reason. Are you ready for us to call him? Yeah. All right. Let's do this. Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:20 Hello? Hi, may I speak to Charlie, please? This is Charlie. Hey, Charlie, how are you? This is a radio show. It's called The Jubal Show. Hi, Charlie. I'm Nina.
Starting point is 00:10:33 Hi, I'm Victoria. And my name's Jubal. What's up? Oh, really? How are you? Yeah. I'm pretty good. Why is the radio show calling me?
Starting point is 00:10:41 We're calling you because we do a segment on the show called the first date follow-up. That's where if you go out on a date with somebody and they end up ghosting you, that person can email up. us to get you on the phone and ask why you're ghosting them. So we got an email about you from somebody, Charlie. Did you know who it is? Or do you think you know who it is? I mean, I mean, I've got a pretty good idea right now. Really? Who do you think it is?
Starting point is 00:11:07 Would it happen to be Krista by chance? Yes, it is Krista. I was feeling like, yay. You got it right. You won nothing, I guess. But yes, it is Krista. Do you mind telling us why you're ghosting Krista? So she's really curious.
Starting point is 00:11:20 She said she liked you a lot, but can't figure it out. I feel like this sounds like I'm weird without the context, but she's just me and an Uber. And I just don't want any part of that. What? I have to explain. Okay. We were taking an Uber and she just starts just casually singing every lyric to this early 2000s boy band song. And let's say it's saying, I mean like every single line.
Starting point is 00:11:47 She's doing the core redress number and everything. and, you know, whatever. I like my stuff. She likes her stuff. That's cool. But in the middle of it, I try asking her a question, and she just aggressively, just, like, and I'm just, I'm not trying to date someone who's just comfortable disrespect me
Starting point is 00:12:05 with this, like, a violent, you know? Okay, see if I felt disrespectful with the shish. There's a very disrespectful, you know. Yeah, I guess that's true. There are different ways you can shish somebody. Yeah. And there's a disrespectful. way for sure. Yeah, this was full, you know, finger up in the face, spit coming out of the mouth
Starting point is 00:12:25 when she, so it just wasn't a good look. So that's, that's it, though. Other than that, it was good? I mean, before, yeah, but, you know, I'm sure a lot of good things happen before terrible things happen, and you don't just look back on the good things and try to record the bad, so, you know, life is short and I'm not going to tolerate that sort of thing. Yeah, okay. Before you know you could be married for years. And then you think back, like, man, if I would have just paid attention to that shush. Yeah, I haven't spoken in 15 years. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Yeah. They're lingering shush. Hey, I'm walking proof. Don't let that happen to yourself. I get it. Well, Charlie, thank you for being honest with us. Krista is actually on the phone and wants to talk to you. Wait, she's here?
Starting point is 00:13:09 You mean she actually let me talk without shush and me? Yeah, I guess. See if she continues. What? Oh my God, it wasn't that bad. Yes, hi. I'm here. Surprise. Yeah. Hi, Krista. Like, for real. So, like, how are you going to ghost me over singing a song? I was just into it. Do you not like music? Like, what? Oh, no, no. I like music. It's just, you're really downplaying it. You're saying you were just singing. You were just full-on choreography dance number like we were in a music video.
Starting point is 00:13:43 And look, I thought it was kind of cute, but you shushed me like your library. on steroids or something and again you just turn into a different person and like I said it was disrespectful it was by bye bye like honestly dude who tries to chat during an instinct classic you know what I mean do you have like librarian issues
Starting point is 00:14:06 or like what's the deal well it made me want to say bye bye bye to you okay it was really disrespectful it had been it had to be quiet peasant energy to it it. And look, I just haven't been a shit that way since third grade story time. So maybe I do have some trauma that you're unlocking. I think you do. Oh, my God. It was really meant to be a fun shush. Like, I really, it's like, you're acting like I threw something at you. Like,
Starting point is 00:14:34 I, it was like a sarcastic shush. It was a power shush. It felt like you were establishing dominance. Like you were trying to be the alpha or something. For me, it was playful. well for me it wasn't and I think you were staring the driver too and also can I just remind you I was literally trying to ask you a question when you did this and it was literally me trying to say hey I think our driver missed the turn and you cut me off with a spitty shush and honestly like even the driver but he gave me a look as if to be like I don't have an HR department
Starting point is 00:15:09 but if I did I'd be calling them right now that is like show dramatic. It was a polite shush, okay? I just, and also, by the way, the driver was definitely vibing with me. He knew every word, too. It was a whole thing. I was setting a fun show
Starting point is 00:15:29 at least I was trying to. Yeah, he knew every word because he was trying to appease you. He was scared. He was hoping, oh, maybe if I sing along this crazy durable stop my windshield and make it so that I have to crash the car because I can't see anything through it through this glob of
Starting point is 00:15:44 saliva all over once in. Well, Charlie, would you like to go on another day with Krista? We'll pay for it. Look, I don't like being disrespected. Nobody does. And throughout all of this, I just heard a bunch of excuses. I haven't heard any apologies or even any reasons why I should give you another chance. So, tell you what, if you can give me a reason and I'll let you speak without shushing you because I'm respectful, then maybe. But if not, then I'm out. Okay. All right. I'm Charlie. I'm very sorry for the power of shush. I got lost in the moment with in sync.
Starting point is 00:16:22 The beat took over me. Here is why you should definitely take me out again. Okay. I bake really good cookies, like can't stop eating them, cookies. I'm really silly, obviously. And yes, I do sometimes freak out and just spontaneous fan spray. that's kind of my love language. I have awesome relationships with both of my parents,
Starting point is 00:16:50 so I don't have any family drama, and I volunteer at a rescue on weekends. So, you know, if you have a pop, then we're basically soulmates. Charlie? I'm not going to lie, that was pretty good. You know, fresh cookies. Honestly, I might need to see a therapist,
Starting point is 00:17:09 so whatever happened to me in third grade, but apology accepted. Look, I'm the condition, no more weaponized session. Otherwise, then I will be saying bye, bye, bye. So, second date, it is. Hey! Hey! Congratulations.
Starting point is 00:17:25 Christopher the win. Just like great shoes, great books take you places. Just like great shoes, great books take you places.
