Hey, everyone.
It's Katie Couric.
Well, the election is in the homestretch, right in time for a new season of
my podcast, Next Question. I'm bringing in some FOKs, friends of Katie's, to help me out, like
Ezra Klein, Jen Psaki, Astead Herndon. But we're also going to have some fun, thanks to some of my
friends like Samantha Bee and Charlemagne the God. We're going to take some viewer questions as well.
I mean, isn't that what democracy is all about?

First date follow-up.
I have no idea why the dude on the phone for a first date follow-up today
isn't getting a call back.
Really?
No idea?
No idea.
Not getting a call back from the girl he wanted to date with and he's what they call in the dating world a real catch really i think he plays guitar oh one of those guys oh serenades yeah one
of those dudes and ladies love guys that can just whip it out and play for him that's kind of hot
you know so i guess he did that on his first, and now he's not getting a call back.
His name is Colton, of course.
That sounds like Colton.
Colton.
Colton plays the guitar.
How are you?
I'm good.
How are you guys doing?
Not too bad.
I'm surprised you're not getting a call back.
First of all, before we get into your date, what's her name?
Her name is Annalise.
Annalise.
Annalise, okay.
Have you already written a song about her?
No, I haven't written a song about her, not yet.
Meet your ex-girlfriend.
Your email said that you guys actually went out on two dates,
and the last time you saw her, though, she came to your house,
and you said that everything seemed perfect.
Yeah, it was weird.
We met online, like we matched on an app and we were
like, let's get coffee, really casual. That went fine. And then I invited her. I was like, hey,
let me cook dinner for you. We have dinner, watch a movie at my place. Okay. So Netflix and chill.
The implication was a little less lascivious to that, but that was the general idea. Yeah, come over, we'll see what
happens. Alright. And what
happened? Yeah. Well,
I thought it went well. I made
her dinner. What did you make her?
Oh, I made her this like
chicken mozzarella thing. A chicken
mozzarella thing? Like from the freezer?
Sounds delicious. This is my grandma's
old recipe, the chicken mozzarella thing. Don't ask
what's in it.
It was like spaghetti with chicken on the side with mozzarella and like panko breadcrumbs.
So like chicken parmesan.
Yeah, basically like chicken parmesan.
I've noticed.
Yeah, it's basically chicken parmesan.
I'm not a great cook.
This was me like stretching my boundaries of comfort.
I was trying to impress her.
How do you think your chicken parm went over on your date?
Honestly, I thought it was fine.
Like, I thought it tasted good.
She seemed to like it.
She cleaned her plate.
I mean, she ate it all.
And, you know, then we were like, let's watch a movie.
We put on You've Got Mail.
You've Got Mail. Well, it's something we've both seen. and you know then we were like let's watch a movie we put on you've got mail you've got mail
well it's something we've both seen and like you know so we can kind of talk while the movie's on
you know oh something you don't have to pay attention to yeah okay netflix and chill
netflix and chill is what you're going for so at what point colton did you whip your guitar out
oh god uh yeah so i have like um you know you can like hang guitars like on your wall like you have like
a mount oh yeah i have a couple of guitars like hanging on my wall and when she got there she
kind of made a comment about it yeah and yeah she's like oh nice guitars like my setup and i
was like cool thanks so like after like after the movie's kind of wrapping up we start making out a
little bit nothing crazy and then i'm like i got an idea i'm like you know what would really be a cool like smooth move is i'll play her a song oh yeah so and i played her
song she seemed to dig it and you know the night kind of wrapped up and she went home and i thought
it was great yeah well it wasn't that great was it she went home yeah i look i respect whatever
people want to do i'm not going to push anything
So how long has it been since your guys' date?
About a week and a half
Haven't heard a thing
Nothing?
You know, I text her like one or two or three times
Like, hey, what's up?
But like, nothing
Dang
Wow, okay, well that sucks
And you shared your music with her
Yeah, I don't know
It seemed perfect
I can't figure it out She just hasn't talked. Yeah, I don't know. It seemed perfect. I can't figure it out.
She just hasn't talked to me.
Weird.
I don't know.
Okay.
Well, we will play a song, come back.
Unless you want to play one of your songs.
We'll play one of ours.
Let's play a song, come back.
Yeah, we'll play a song, come back.
And then we'll call her and see what went wrong
and why she's not calling you back, all right?
All right.
All right, man.
Hang on one second.
You'll get your first date follow-up next.
It's a Jubal show.
If you just missed the first part of today's first date follow-up,
Colton is on the phone.
He hasn't gotten a call back from this woman that he really likes
named Annalise.
The last time he saw her, she came over to his house.
He made her dinner.
They watched Netflix, and she noticed guitars on his wall.
Apparently, Colton can play guitar and sing a little bit,
so he serenaded her.
He thought that it was
sexy and that her heart melted
and all that stuff.
Yeah, but it sounds like it didn't really
work because she left.
Did you guys kiss
before she left? By the way, I didn't ask you.
Yeah, we had a good night kiss
but the making out was
before the playing.
Okay.
All right.
So.
Well, I mean, you made out.
That's pretty good.
Exactly.
But not at the end.
Yeah.
If you're making out in the middle and then you just get like a peck on the cheek at the
end, something might have happened.
Like a side hug.
Yeah.
He hasn't heard from her in a week and a half.
He's been texting her and no response.
So we're about to call her right now and see if we can figure out what happened.
And Colton, you said that everything went fine on your first date.
Normally there's something else, so we're going to ask you,
before we make the phone call, like we do with everybody,
is there anything that you're not telling us?
Yeah, I've heard you guys ask that all the time.
There was nothing weird, I promise.
All right.
Well, we believe you.
He has his fingers crossed.
Yeah, exactly. All right, I'm going to dial her phone number right believe you. He has his fingers crossed. Yeah, exactly.
All right, I'm going to dial their phone number right now
and see if we can get you another date, okay?
All right.
All right, here we go.
Hello?
Hi, may I speak to Annalise, please?
Hi, this is Shay.
Well, I was looking for Annalise.
Who is this?
That's a good question.
Yeah.
This is The Jubal Show.
My name's Jubal.
My name's Alex.
My name's Evan.
And it's The Jubal Show, like I said.
Do you know who The Jubal Show is?
Do you?
I've heard of it.
Why are you calling me?
Oh, well, thanks for hearing about it.
Yeah, appreciate it.
We're calling you because we do a segment on the show called The First Date Follow-Up.
It's where if you go out on a date with someone and then end up blowing them off,
they can email us to get you on the phone and figure out what happened.
And you recently went on a date with one of our listeners.
Okay.
Have you been out on a bunch of dates in the last couple
weeks no not a bunch okay this one okay so why don't you give us the name of the
list the person that you went on a date with and dinner yeah the listener of
ours and we'll tell you if you're right cool and yeah bingo Colton Colton is the
listener of this show.
Listener.
Who emailed us and said that he went actually on two dates with you, right?
Coffee.
And then the last time he saw you, he went over to his house to watch some Netflix and
have him make you chicken parm.
He told you all that?
That's true.
He also told us that he hasn't heard from you in a week and a half and he's been trying
to get a hold of you so he doesn't know what's up.
So, what's up?
Yeah, I guess.
Everything went okay.
What do you want to know?
Well, we just want to know what the reason is that you won't talk to him now.
Yeah, why are you ghosting him?
Did something happen on your date?
Yeah, he just did this one thing that just rubbed me the wrong way.
Oh, so he didn't rub you the right way.
Yeah.
Was it literally that he rubbed you the wrong way?
Figuratively.
Okay.
That's good, I guess.
So what did he do?
I asked him.
So he had these guitars mounted on his wall, and I think they were cool.
You know of them?
We know of the guitars.
You asked about his guitars.
He grabbed one and played you a song.
That's,
and he said it seemed like you liked it.
I liked the idea of it.
Okay.
He just kind of,
I don't know if the music took over or what,
but he ended up setting up this whole production pretty much.
I mean, he had audio playing from his phone as the background music.
The background music? What do you mean by that?
Like he was strumming along to the soundtrack. It was just excessive. It was just like a whole theater show.
Yeah, he did not mention that.
I mean, there's people that like to perform.
You know, musicians are like super music.
It was definitely a performance.
It was definitely a performance.
So you don't like that?
Yeah, but also the song choice.
He played a Taylor Swift song.
Wait, like on his guitar?
Yes.
No, honey. His guitar and I guess the background music he was playing too.
Oh my god. Yeah, the background music was just like sounds
and humming along to the beat. It was a lot.
He's a T-Swift fan. So that's kind of odd. That's a little odd.
Serenading you is one thing, but he chose
Taylor Swift of all people.
And it went on for such an extended period of time, like 10 minutes.
So he started doing that song.
It's like, you belong with me.
You belong with me.
Oh, wow.
Really?
Oh, Colton.
What's that?
You belong with me.
It's great.
What's the problem?
Oh, no. Oh, Colton. You belong with me. It's great. What's the problem? Oh, no.
Oh, God.
I was actually going to call Colton on right now and ask him what the name of that song
is anyway, how it goes.
So it's probably good that you just jumped on there, Colton.
Thank you.
I appreciate that.
Very good timing.
You are an artist, sir.
Sorry, Annalise.
We didn't forgot to tell you.
Yeah, I forgot to tell you that Colton is actually online listening and wants to talk
to you.
Look, I'm sorry that you, I thought you liked Taylor Swift.
I mean, you mentioned, I don't know.
I asked you if you liked Taylor Swift, like on our first date,
you were like, yeah, she's good.
I thought you liked her.
Yeah, she's good.
I like her.
She's fine.
Are you really not calling me back because I played you a Taylor Swift song?
I'm just not really into that.
You belong with me.
Oh, no.
It's nothing personal.
I mean, I had a nice time, but I'm just not really into that stuff.
Was it because it was an old Taylor Swift song?
I personally just wanted to celebrate that she's re-recording all of her songs to, you know, the Scooter Braun stuff.
I just wanted to celebrate. I'm just not as big of a Swifty.
Look, when
the Lover Tour was
canceled because of COVID,
I was heartbroken.
I bet you were.
So I am completely
unashamed of
who I love and what I love.
And the fact that she is going to disrespect me and disrespect Taylor like that doesn't really make me want to go on another date with her.
Wow.
Well, this is turned.
I'm not saying I don't respect Taylor Swift.
I just wasn't really that into it.
I mean, it was just you performing it on a date was a little weird to me.
No, you 100% disrespected Taylor Swift.
Because any true Swifty, any true good person would have appreciated what I was doing.
I mean, it does sound nice.
It's sweet.
It's romantic.
But it's not for everybody.
I'm not disrespecting Taylor Swift.
It was your performance.
I like Taylor Swift.
Oh. That is bulls**t. You don'ting Taylor Swift. It was your performance. I like Taylor Swift. Oh.
That is bulls**t.
You don't respect Taylor Swift.
You're worse than Scooter Braun.
Oh, my God.
Oh, wow.
That's too far.
I don't know what that means, really.
That is too far.
That's too far.
It sounds bad.
Yeah, Colton, we don't use that kind of language on this show, the Scooter Braun word.
Colton, I'm going to ask you to cool off for just a second.
Annalise, would you like to go on another date with Colton we will pay for it
I am fine thank you
I am also fine with that
okay
good luck you guys
