The Jubal Show on demand.
First date follow-up.
Duncan is on the phone today for a first date follow-up,
and Duncan's a dirty boy.
Oh?
And that's why Duncan thinks he's not getting a call back.
A little too dirty.
Naughty boy, Duncan.
We'll get to that in a second,
and why Duncan thinks he's a dirty boy.
But first we have to hear about the date.
Duncan went out with a woman named Jess.
She's not calling him back.
And how long has it been, Duncan?
Good morning,
my jubilant mind. It's been three days.
Only three
days? Only three
days, but we were texting two days before
that and then went on a date.
In my opinion,
the date went well.
I really don't understand why
it's been a whole whopping 72 hours
after the date
and I still haven't heard from her, man.
Who's counting that?
A whole 72 hours.
I mean, it has been long enough to be ghosted
and I'm assuming that you've tried texting her?
Of course.
And she hasn't responded at all?
She hasn't responded at all.
I texted her the next day.
I said I had fun.
I was looking forward to the next time.
You know, she read it.
I saw it go on Reddit, you know, and she didn't respond.
So I don't know if I should respond again.
Yeah.
I mean, okay.
I mean, that's fair if you don't know if you should respond,
especially if you got left on read.
That's got to be embarrassing for you.
I'm so sorry about that.
Yeah, man. You know, I was left on read, that's got to be embarrassing for you. I'm so sorry about that. Yeah, man.
You know, I was left on read after I paid for her meal.
Are you bragging?
Well, I mean, like that's kind of expected, but even though I don't expect it, but where did you guys meet?
I mean, you know, that is, but we have mutual friends.
We actually have one, which suggested that I take her out.
Okay.
So I said, why not?
You know, to be honest, one reason I'm hoping she isn't like, you know, done with me is because our friends going to want to know what happened on the date.
Of course.
They all want to know what happened.
They, you know, want to know why we not dating.
And I don't want to get into all that.
Okay, so are you only trying to take her on a second date
so you don't look like a fool to your friends?
No, no, no, that's not it.
Okay.
That's not it.
That's not it, man.
Well, what'd you guys do?
You know, like I said,
we were texting for a couple of days
before we finally met up,
you know, in that time frame,
I asked her about a couple of favorite places
around town that she liked.
She mentioned one that my friend happens to bartend at.
And I've been to a few times,
so I chose there.
You know, it's a chill environment,
nice food, good drinks, you know, good music.
What do you think happened then?
I mean, I know you put in your email
something that makes me think you're a dirty boy.
And that's what makes you think
she's knocking on your back. But what makes you think she's not calling you back.
But what do you think happened?
Why do you think the date turned on you?
You know, conversation at the table
wasn't overly stimulating,
but it wasn't like boring either.
You know, it wasn't boring either.
We were talking about school,
our mutual friends, work, dog, family.
I really don't think dinner was the problem.
I think it was apple.
I'm very picky about keeping my truck super clean.
And I didn't have time to get it detailed that week or vacuum the floorboard.
So all the floorboards done.
So, you know, my guess for her not responding is that she thinks I could have cleaned my car more.
That's why I mean you're a dirty boy.
You had a dirty truck. Dirty truck, dirty boy.
Dirty boys don't get calls back
when they have a dirty, dirty truck, do they,
dirty boy? Man, I'm telling you
there's nothing else.
I felt really comfortable with her.
I'm not used to girls not responding
when I'm the one interested in them.
Oh, right there.
I've seen a few of her friends before.
I will say that.
Oh, my God.
I love that you just said that.
Do you think she knows that?
No.
Okay.
She probably doesn't know that.
Duncan, I'm going to be honest.
If I had to guess,
I don't think it's the truck
that she's not calling you back over.
If she happened to find out
that you have banged a couple of her friends,
that's off limits.
Agreed.
And also,
nothing's probably a secret.
They all talk about your you-who.
They talk about everything.
They've talked about it
in great detail,
just so you know,
and your dirty truck.
Well, except there's been
a couple of them, right?
So could it be that maybe
the good things were said
and so it's like the opposite?
They're like, okay.
So maybe the things
that they're saying
are good things.
So they're like,
hey, I'll try dunking out for an evening.
No, that's weird.
That doesn't work like that?
Okay, never mind.
No.
This is not Sisterhood of the Traveling Dunk.
We're not homie hoppers usually.
Maybe that's why you're not getting a call back then.
Okay, either way, we'll play a song, come back,
and then call her and see what the reason is
and try to get you another date, all right?
Okay.
We'll play a song, come back, and get your first date follow-up next.
It's the Jubal Show.
We're in the middle of your first date follow-up,
but we have options.
And we have a couple reasons
that the dude on the phone, Duncan,
might not be getting a call back
from a woman he went on a date with.
Her name is Jess.
It's been three days,
and he's antsy to figure out why she's ghosting him.
And option number one is he said his truck was really dirty,
and he thinks maybe that turned her off.
Option number two is he's also hooked up with a few of her friends and maybe that's the problem.
Seems more likely.
Yeah.
So could be one of those two things or could be a whole new thing that we find out.
But we're about to call Jess and see if we can figure out why she's ghosting Duncan.
All right, Duncan, you ready?
Yeah, we can call.
All right, here we go.
Hello?
Hi,
may I speak to Jess,
please?
This is Jess.
May I ask who's calling?
Jess,
this is a radio show.
It's called The Jubal Show.
My name is Jubal.
My name is Alex. My name is English Evan. We do a segment on the show called The First Date Follow-Up. It's called The Jubal Show. My name is Jubal. My name is Alex.
My name is Igla Shevin.
We do a segment on the show called The First Date Follow-Up.
It's where if you've been on a date with someone and then end up ghosting them,
they can email us to get you on the phone and find out what happened.
And we got an email from one of our listeners about you.
Okay.
Who?
His name is Duncan, and you went on a date with him like three days ago.
He had a dirty truck.
Okay. Yeah. Yep. Okay, yeah, yep.
I know Duncan, obviously.
So Duncan wants to know why you're not calling him back.
I mean, he told you what happened after dinner, right?
What happened after dinner?
Seriously, he didn't even get into that?
Of course not.
I'll tell you what he told us,
and then you tell me if we're missing something.
It sounds like we might be.
He said that you guys went to dinner, everything was good.
His truck was dirty,
so that might have turned you off because his truck was dirty.
Yeah, no, his truck was fine.
Whatever, my car's not that clean.
I don't care.
It's not that big of a deal.
Seriously, like, he didn't even go into, like, who we met after dinner.
Wow. What?
No.
Nothing at all on that.
So, we met his mom after dinner.
On date one.
What?
Wait, on accident or on purpose?
Oh, no, no.
On purpose.
The dumpster told me after dinner that we were going to go to, like, one more surprise spot.
And we've been texting for a couple days, so I thought it was fine.
You know, we've been texting about where our favorite hangout spots around town were.
Something cool. There's, like, one more surprise spot.
You know, we have a lot of mutual friends.
I don't know if we told you that, but, you know, I was thinking maybe our group of friends out.
So we were meeting up with them or something
And he took me to visit his mom in the hospital
On a date
Yes, yep before I even realized what was going on
He's like oh my mom had surgery a couple days ago
And she's still at the hospital healing and I thought we could just like surprise her real quick
Huh wow that is interesting uh? ago and she's still at the hospital healing and I thought we could just like surprise her real quick. Huh. Wow.
That is interesting.
Okay, so his mom's in the hospital.
Yeah.
Apparently.
For what?
She said
he had surgery like a week ago
or something. That is so weird.
He told you he was recovering. He told you he was going to some special
spot and then took you to the hospital
to meet his mom.
Yeah, before I even realized
what was going on, he like went into
the story about how she had surgery and whatever
and he's like, I just want to surprise her
real quick. What a weirdo.
No one thinks that's kind of cute?
No. What? That is weird
full stop. No, but he likes her so much
that he's like, come meet my mom.
How about let's meet her in not a medical facility.
But yes, I do not think that's cute at all.
No, not at all.
I mean, OK, and I'll honestly, he's not a weirdo.
He's a nice guy.
But the decision was like the weirdest thing ever.
I mean, to be honest, I kind of went along with it because I didn't know what to do.
Well, yeah.
And it's like,
I have no bad feelings for Duncan.
Like I said, he's nice.
It's just any guy that takes me
to meet anybody at the hospital
on a first date
is out of the picture for me.
Sorry.
Okay.
That's scary.
Touche to that, honestly.
Yeah.
So you didn't see that as a plus at all?
Like, you know,
he's kind of a mama's boy, right?
Women like that. Oh, huge. Good relationship you know, he's kind of a mama's boy, right? Women like that.
Good relationship.
Yeah.
He's a huge mama's boy and I'm totally not into that at all.
All right.
Um,
yeah.
Well,
what did they,
what did they talk about?
Did,
did you join a conversation with him while she's in the hospital bed?
I'm just curious.
That's a weird visit.
That's a really weird visit for you.
I mean,
like at first,
I mean,
she's very nice woman,
but it was just so awkward.
It's like they literally talk about their family and his siblings
and, like, who had been to visit and who hadn't.
And then, like, I was just kind of listening.
And then he, like, is like, hey, Jess, tell her about yourself.
I literally felt like I was in the first day of class, you know,
where you have to, like, share the random facts about yourself.
Sounds like he's just really trying to find the one.
He's like, first day, I'm going to be like, my mom's got to get her, you know, I got to get my mom's.
This sounds like torture.
It really does.
His mom's sitting in the hospital recovering from surgery.
He takes you there on a first date and then says, hey, mom, tell this girl about you.
We're not, we just are on our first date.
So you may never see her again.
He's like, hey, what's your name again?
Can you talk to my mom and tell her about yourself?
See, I kind of laugh because I probably do the same
thing. Oh my God.
Okay, and is that the only reason? I mean,
I feel like that's a big enough reason. That would be
very awkward. Is that the only reason
you're not calling him back?
Yes. I mean, I feel like
you said that's definitely a huge red flag.
That's the reason. Okay, well, what feel like you said that's definitely a huge red flag. That's the reason.
Okay. Well, what if I told you that his mom is actually on the phone and wants to talk to you again?
She's been listening.
I'm hanging up.
Okay. No, she's not. She's not. She's not on the phone. But who is on the phone? Duncan is on the phone and he's been listening and he wants to talk to you. Seriously?
Why are you laughing?
This isn't funny.
I thought you hated my truck or something.
But instead of you mad,
I took you to meet my mama?
Yeah!
Duncan, you took me to meet your mom in the hospital.
Are you kidding?
No offense, I don't want to meet your mom and especially I don't want to do it during a hospital.
I don't want to do it at a hospital
during a pandemic. I mean,
how is that so hard to understand?
Like,
what kind of s*** are you?
What?
I'm not being a s***. You're being a sensitive
mama boy. I mean, perhaps you should
drive over to Wake Med and give her a visit.
Maybe she'll comfort you.
Maybe you can suck on something.
Damn, it's like that?
Damn, it's like that.
Listen, I'm not trying to be mean, but I mean, I know that we'll see each other around and everything.
Like, everything will be cool.
We just don't need to date.
Okay, well, look, just don't tell anybody about this.
Don't tell nobody.
Why?
Are you embarrassed?
Like, no. I mean, this is personal. Like, Jess. don't tell anybody about this. Don't tell nobody. Why? Are you embarrassed?
Like,
no,
I mean,
this is personal.
Like,
yeah.
Personal?
You hear me?
You're the one who made it public. It was too personal.
That was the problem.
It was super personal.
He was so cool to us.
Like,
you know,
I,
that was something that was a surprise.
Like,
I took,
like,
that's something special to me.
Like,
I want her to meet my mom.
Don't worry about it,
Duncan.
I want to forget it myself. I'm not telling anybody anything. It's so special to me. Like, I'm wanting her to meet my mom. Don't worry about it, Duncan. I want to forget it myself.
I'm not telling anybody anything.
It's so weird.
Well, hey, don't forget it just yet, because I have a question for you, Jess.
Would you like to go on another date with Duncan?
We'll pay for it.
Yeah, there's a greater chance of me going to visit his mom at the hospital alone.
