Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an iHeart Podcast. I'm Andrea Gunning, host of the podcast Betrayal. Police Lieutenant Joel Kern used his badge to fool everyone. Most of all, his wife, Caroline. He texted, I've ruined our lives. You're going to want to divorce me. How far would he go to cover up what he'd done? The fact that you lied is absolutely horrific. And quite frankly,
Starting point is 00:00:27 I question how many other women are out there that may bring forward allegations in the future. Listen to Betrayal on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Have you ever thought about going voiceover? I'm Hope Woodard, a comedian, creator, and seeker of male validation. I'm also the girl behind voiceover, the movement that exploded in 2024. You might hear that term and think it's about celibacy, but to me, voiceover is about understanding yourself outside of sex and relationships. It's flexible, it's customizable, and it's a personal process.
Starting point is 00:01:10 Singleness is not a waiting room. You are actually at the party right now. Let me hear it. Listen to voiceover on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. It's your girl, Tia Madison, from the Outspoken Podcast Network, from iHeart Podcast. We're doing pride in a big way. Come celebrate with Las Culturas, sis with Matt Rogers and Bo and Yang. Hairy haircut on an M&M.
Starting point is 00:01:35 It's how you make an M&M a girl. You give it Lisa Rinna's hair. Keep the party going with high key. I am high key going to lose my mind over Cowboy Carter, the way she about to yank my bank account. Fighting words with George M. Johnson. I'm gonna start speaking publicly about this to try and become a lightning rod.
Starting point is 00:01:50 And a special shout out from comedian Lisa Lampanelli and her podcast, Shrink This. Happy Pride for all who celebrate and who doesn't. Listen to all the outspoken shows on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts in. A lot of times big economic forces show up in our lives in small ways. Four days a week I would buy two cups of banana pudding, but the price has gone up,
Starting point is 00:02:15 so now I only buy one. Small but important ways. From tech billionaires to the bond market to, yeah, banana pudding. If it's happening in business, our new podcast is on it. I'm Max Chastin. And I'm Stacey Vanek-Smith. So listen to everybody's business on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. First date of follow-up powered by the advocates injury attorneys online at advocateslaw.com. Connor is on the phone today for a first date follow-up,
Starting point is 00:02:45 and he's getting ghosted by a woman named Gia. So we're about to call her and see if she'll tell us why she's ghosting him and maybe get him a second date. But first, we have to find out about the date. Connor, how long has it been since you talked to Gia? It's been a little over a week, and I've tried everything. I've tried calling, texting, you know, the works. OK, well, that's a frustrating feeling. Maybe she lost her phone.
Starting point is 00:03:10 That would be a good explanation. It would, right? This is what would be helpful. Why don't you tell us about your date? Okay. So we did something that's, I don't know, I guess it's a little quirky. It was a scavenger hunt at the art museum downtown. And basically you like download this app, right? And it gives you all these clues and like riddles to solve. And you basically like run around finding the stuff, like, you know, the ugliest statue
Starting point is 00:03:38 or the most romantic painting. And we were like, when we started, I was like, you know, do you ever watch like Amazing Race or any of those like reality shows? And she was like, yeah, that's, yeah, I love those. I love that stuff. So I was like, me too. Let's like pretend we're on one of those. So, um, I dunno, there was like a lot of playful banter conversations. Some of those conversations got like pretty deep. Um, and we were like, it felt very like easy and intimate And we were like, it felt very like
Starting point is 00:04:05 easy and intimate because we were doing things like we're sharing our earbuds to listen to the audio tour. And we're like, we kept making fun of how the like narrator sounded very dramatic. So I don't know, we were just having fun, you know? Yeah. And it seemed like she was super into it too. Oh, totally. It was easy. We were, to me, it was like we were in our own bubble. Like, even at one point, like we sat, we were sitting and we found this like weird abstract sculpture that was on the scavenger hunt.
Starting point is 00:04:38 And we just sat there. And before I knew it, I looked at my watch and 40 minutes had passed. We had just been like talking. And I don't know, like, you know, that kind of, when something like that happens, it just feels like you clicked and it doesn't happen that much. So I really felt like we clicked. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Okay. So why do you think you're getting ghosted? Well that's it. I don't know. Cause I guess I've never had a date that I would actually describe as like fun. I feel like I meet a girl. I go out on like the obligatory coffee date. We have small talk or there's like an awkward dinner where you're wondering, Oh, am I paying for this or are we splitting it?
Starting point is 00:05:18 Like it's just so awkward. And, and this was not any of that. It's kind of like we were, I don't know, we were on like a little adventure, you know? Yeah. And I think the part that was like, I'm not trying to sound corny or anything, but like the part that was most attractive
Starting point is 00:05:36 is that I got to see her brain at work, you know? Like how she saw stuff and like how she thinks and how she approaches the world. And I was just very, very attracted by what I saw. Yeah, you're into her. We can definitely tell you're into her. Oh, I am. It's weird.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Like she even when she made this super dry joke about modern art that like no one else would have caught. And I do this like a week later, I'm thinking about it every single day. Like the joke replays in my head and I'm like, I don't know. It's just so smart. You know, you don't you don't run into someone who's like as attractive, but also so interesting and so easy to have fun with. Yeah. Are you smart, too?
Starting point is 00:06:18 Because, I mean, if we're thinking about what could have gone wrong, I don't know if she's super intellectual and you can't think of anything, like there weren't even any awkward moments. I didn't have any. And like, I'd like to think that I'm pretty smart, which is why I'm always looking for intelligence as like a part of the package.
Starting point is 00:06:39 So no, I mean, I don't think that would be it. I would be pretty surprised if she didn't find like, you know, she didn't feel like I was keeping up. Okay. Well, we'll see if we can figure it out for you then. We'll play a song, come back, call her and see if she'll tell us why she's ghosting you or if she lost her phone. And then maybe get you a second date, okay?
Starting point is 00:06:59 Thanks, I would appreciate that. All right, we'll play a song, come back and get your first date follow up next. I'm Andrea Gunning, host of the podcast Betrayal. Police Lieutenant Joel Kern used his badge to fool everyone, most of all his wife, Caroline. He texted, I've ruined our lives. You're going to want to divorce me. Caroline's husband was living another life behind the scenes. He betrayed his oath to his family and to his community.
Starting point is 00:07:29 She said you left bruises, pulled her hair, that type of thing. No. How far would Joel go to cover up what he'd done? You're unable to keep track of all your lies, and quite frankly, I question how many other women may bring forward allegations in the future. This season of Betrayal investigates one officer's decades of deception, lies that left those closest to him questioning everything they thought they knew. Listen to Betrayal on the iHeart radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Have you ever thought about going voiceover? I'm Hope Woodard, a comedian, creator, and seeker of male validation.
Starting point is 00:08:15 To most people, I'm the girl behind voiceover, the movement that exploded in 2024. Voiceover is about understanding yourself outside of sex and relationships. It's more than personal. It's political, it's societal, and at times, it's far from what I originally intended it to be. These days, I'm interested in expanding what it means to be voiceover, to make it customizable for anyone who feels the need to explore their relationship to relationships. I'm talking to a lot of people who will help us think about how we love each other. It's a very, very normal experience to have times
Starting point is 00:08:55 where a relationship is prioritizing other parts of that relationship that are being naked together. How we love our family. I've spent a lifetime trying to get my mother to love me, but the price is too high. And how we love ourselves. Singleness is not a waiting room. You are actually at the party right now.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Let me hear it. Listen to VoiceOver on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. It's your girl T.S. Madison from the Outspoken Podcast Network from I Heart Podcast, honey. And you know what time of year it is, y'all. We're doing Pride in a big, big way. Come celebrate with my show, Outlaws with T.S. Madison. So do you throw salt over your shoulder sometimes? I'm not a brujo.
Starting point is 00:09:37 Oh, you're not a brujo? Keep the party going with Tell Me Something Messy with Brandon Kyle Goodman. Lobotomies these days are not that painful. We got BFF, Black Fat Femmes. All the fries are in all shapes and sizes. Baby waffle. And Afterlives, Marsha P. Johnson. You're gonna be gagging.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Just get your heart ready for heart failure. Let's live loud and proud, y'all. Have a happy Pride and listen to all the outspoken shows on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts in. A lot of times the big economic forces we hear about on the news show up in our lives in small ways. Three or four days a week, I would buy two cups of banana pudding.
Starting point is 00:10:22 But the price has gone up, So now I only buy one. The demand curve in action. And that's just one of the things we'll be covering on everybody's business from Bloomberg Businessweek. I'm Max Chafkin. And I'm Stacey Vanek-Smith. Every Friday, we will be diving into the biggest stories in business, taking a look at what's going on, why it matters and how it shows up in our everyday lives. With guests like Businessweek editor Brad Stone, sports reporter Randall Williams, and consumer
Starting point is 00:10:49 spending expert Amanda Mull, we'll take you inside the boardrooms, the backrooms, even the signal chats that make our economy tick. Hey, I want to learn about VeChain. I want to buy some blockchain or whatever it is that they're doing. So listen to everybody's business on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. First date follow up powered by the advocates injury attorneys online at advocateslaw.com. Right in the middle of your first date follow up.
Starting point is 00:11:18 And if you're just joining us, Connor is on the phone and Connor is getting ghosted by a woman named Gia. So we're about to call her and see if she'll tell us the reason she's ghosting him and maybe get him a second date. But first, Connor, why don't you break down your date again real quick with Gia? Yeah, it was perfect, at least on my end,
Starting point is 00:11:35 and I thought she had fun. We went to the art museum downtown, we downloaded this app where you can go on a scavenger hunt and solve riddles and find different pieces of art. And it was, it was everything I looked for in a date. It was fun. It was easy to talk to her. We totally clicked.
Starting point is 00:11:52 And yeah, I just really feel like I got a glimpse into not only like, um, not only her, but like how her brain works, which like I said, sounds kind of corny, but I am really into this girl. So I'm really hoping that there's some, I hope there's some fluke that I was asked to why she's not like responding to me. Okay. Are you ready for us to call her? As ready as I'll ever be.
Starting point is 00:12:15 All right. Here we go. Hello? Hi, may I speak to Gia please? This is she. Hey Gia, how are you? This is the Jubal show. It's a radio show. Hi Gia, I'm Nina. Hi, I'm Victoria.
Starting point is 00:12:38 And my name is Jubal. How are you? Hi, good, thanks. Do you know the show? Not like that well. Okay. Hi, good. Thanks. Yeah, are you do you know the show? Um, not like that. Well, okay I don't remember submitting to anything but um Well, I don't think you did but we did get an email about you from somebody who listens to the show
Starting point is 00:12:57 That's why we're on the phone Okay, you're the most chill attitude Well, we do a segment on the show that's called the first date follow-up That's where if you go out on a date with somebody and then you end up ghosting them That person can have us call you to ask us why you're ghosting them Who are you ghosting? Yes, it is about Connor he said that he really liked you, thought your date was great and is confused that it's been you know over a week now and
Starting point is 00:13:29 you haven't responded to him. Do you mind telling us why? Yeah well oh my goodness. The date was fun like surprisingly fun. He's you know clever and charming but also he was just a lot. Like, what does that mean? Well, you know how people can just like, there's a line of like too much sometimes at first we were clicking and like I thought was, you know, cute how into the scavenger hunt he wasn't, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:58 I love like interactive things and games and everything, but he kept making like literally everything into a bit just the whole time, like narrating the date in the worst fake British accent I've ever heard. You know, it's cute the first time, but not like, you know, an hour later. And then, you know, trying to solve clues that like weren't even, you know, part of the game and, you know and high-fiving strangers. Not everyone is into this, dude. High-fiving strangers.
Starting point is 00:14:30 I mean, that's kind of a warm energy, no? Yeah. This old guy just kind of looked at him weird, which actually was pretty funny. But then he climbed up on a fountain to like look for another clue. I don't know. He set off this motion alarm and then what's the thing? Like a docent? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:54 Yeah. Like he got into like an argument with him and like they were starting to like call security. And then he was arguing about whether this like, I've seen it in different TV shows where it's like a banana or a fire extinguisher or something just like on the wall, whether that counts as art, you know, like having this debate about modern art. And it was just like, I feel like those two tables just kind of like, explain it the best. It was just like chaotic energy. And I was just like,, like at first I was excited, but then by the end I was just exhausted.
Starting point is 00:15:27 Tanner Iskra Wait, wait, that's why you ghosted me? Because I was too fun? Tanner Iskra Hey, Jill, that's Connor. Connor's on the phone listening and he'll talk to you. Jillian Larkin Oh my God. You guys didn't tell me that she was on here. Tanner Iskra You didn't say anything at the time. I mean, you were laughing and we were having a really good time. We're having fun. We were but then I also laugh when I'm stressed like I'm nervous, you know, like I'm not gonna tell someone I barely know like how to
Starting point is 00:15:57 not act when they're having fun and yeah, some of it was fun and funny, but then I was just like By the end of it, I didn't feel safe leaving you unsupervised in public. I feel like you should have had one of those backpacks of a lease on or something. Listen, listen, yeah, I wasn't trying to be extra. I just, I really liked you.
Starting point is 00:16:18 I was nervous, so I leaned into the jokes because it felt easier than like being awkward or quiet or like too serious. I get that. However, it's like okay to be quiet for a little bit in a museum, you know? There wasn't any room for just like being and like stopping and observing. It was just like onto the next, onto the next. It was like being stuck in an improv show. Well, look, I know I can be a lot but but like on that date I swear I was not putting on a show. I was genuinely having one of the best dates I've ever had in my life. And I was just so surprised and it was so refreshing
Starting point is 00:16:55 that you were so smart and funny. And you you made art to me feel like less pretentious. So I just didn't want it to end. Gia, he loves your brain. Okay. Well, that's really sweet actually. Thank you. I mean, listen, I'm not looking for you to change your vibe or anything. Like if you're a chamomile, that's great. But I don't know, chamomile and espresso espresso can work together balance each other out or whatever, right? I was so lost for a second there.
Starting point is 00:17:29 So you're espresso? I mean, I do like lavender more than Camomile, but what you want to be a latte? Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. See, I can be a whole damn macchiato if you'll let me. What do you think, Gio? You want to let him be a macchiato? Would you go on another date with Connor and we'll pay for it?
Starting point is 00:17:49 Sweet talk. Yeah. You want some macchiato. Oh, I mean, okay. Let me think. I appreciate the honesty, I do. I did have a good time minus the part where I thought we were gonna get banned
Starting point is 00:18:01 from the museum forever. But there's an exhibit coming up that I really want to see. I will not climb on fountains. I will not climb on fountains. I swear I will not get in fights with the docent. And there will be no fake accents. And high fives. No high fives.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Unless, like, maybe our next date is maybe signing up for an improv show or something. I mean, I think you should give, we should give it one more shot. Yeah. You will? You will. Yeah, I said, even today, you made me laugh.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Yay. All right, sweet. Oh, yay. Congratulations. Yay. This is awesome. Oh, yes. This is exactly how I hope this would go.
Starting point is 00:18:41 This is great. Okay, well, I'll text you and we can go get those lattes and plan the next thing. Cool, just let me know when and I won't be latte. What? Oh God. What does that mean? Like late, like latte, late.
Starting point is 00:19:00 I won't be latte. All right. All right. All right. Jubal's first date follow up. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late.
Starting point is 00:19:08 I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late.
Starting point is 00:19:16 I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late. I'm going to be late.
