First Date Follow Up - The Jubal Show - Evan Gets Ghosted by Claire After Axe Throwing Date Takes a Dark Turn

Episode Date: June 17, 2025

In today’s First Date Follow Up, Evan reaches out for help after being ghosted by Claire—a month after what he thought was a great date. The two went axe throwing (her idea), grabbed stree...t food, talked for hours, and even shared a kiss. But things took a bizarre turn when Evan started yelling out the names of people he “hated” each time he threw an axe—including a third-grade soccer coach and a guy from the gym. Claire says what started as funny quickly turned unsettling, especially when Evan later sent her an axe-throwing meme as a callback. Was Evan just blowing off steam, or did his list of targets go too far? Listen to find out if this unorthodox stress relief ruined his shot at love—and whether Claire thinks he belongs on a therapist’s couch more than a second date. Ever been ghosted after what you thought was an amazing date? Do you REALLY want that Second Date? The Jubal Show has your back! On First Date Follow Up, we track down the person who disappeared to get the real reason why. Awkward, hilarious, and sometimes downright shocking—First Date Follow Up delivers the truth, whether you want to hear it or not. Will there be a second date or just secondhand embarrassment? Presented by Capital One, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports. I'm Andrea Gunning, host of the podcast, Betrayal. Police Lieutenant Joel Kern used his badge to fool everyone. Most of all, his wife, Caroline. He texted, I've ruined our lives. You're going to want to divorce me.
Starting point is 00:02:17 How far would he go to cover up what he'd done? The fact that you lied is absolutely horrific. And quite frankly, I question how many other women are out there that may bring forward allegations in the future. Listen to Betrayal on the iHeart radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. First date follow-up powered by the advocates injury attorneys online at advocateslaw.com. Evan is on the phone today for our first day of follow-up and he's getting ghosted by Claire. So in a second, we're going to call her and see if she'll tell us why she's
Starting point is 00:02:51 ghosting him and maybe get him another date. But first Evan, how long has it been since you heard from Claire? I, a month probably. Okay. You're definitely getting ghosted then. If it's been a whole month, why do you want to get a hold of her? I don't know. I just like I thought she was great. I really I thought, you know, the day went well.
Starting point is 00:03:10 I've had a lot of fun. I just really want to get a hold of her. OK, well, have you been trying to reach out to her in that month? Like, has she said anything to you at all that's giving you hope? No, not really. Okay. And I've, uh, you know, I was trying to like be cool about it. Not really.
Starting point is 00:03:30 I just text her once, but then I text her again recently. I just like sent her like an axe throwing name, you know, just to call back to the date and yeah, nothing. Let's talk about the date then Evan, like what did you, so you guys went axe throwing. Yeah. Yeah. It was her idea by the way, nothing. Let's talk about the date then, Evan. Like what did you say? You guys went axe throwing. Yeah. Yeah. It was her idea, by the way, guys.
Starting point is 00:03:48 So it wasn't like my crazy idea to go axe throwing. That's super fun. Yeah. I thought it was a little intense, but you know, cool, I guess idea for a first date. She was definitely way better than me at the axe throwing, like embarrassingly better at axe throwing. Like she actually, during like while we were doing this, like she actually gave me tips on how to throw, which I appreciated, I think.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Okay. But yeah, so that was pretty much that the ax throwing portion. And then afterwards we grabbed some like street food from, uh, like a local truck and, um, we ate in the park. We talked for hours. It was awesome. Like she was hilarious. I mean, obviously she destroyed me in ax throwing, but she didn't rub it in at all. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Like, I just felt like we clicked after, you know, we ate our water back to her place and we shared like, you know, like a kiss. It was really low key, but it was really nice. And that was, that was it. So what do you think went wrong? I mean, it looks like there could be a few different options, but in your opinion, was there a moment that felt a little bit more uncomfortable than the others? Um, I mean, you know, obviously like sometimes I'm a little bit inept socially.
Starting point is 00:05:09 I don't know. I say dumb things and I don't realize it even in the moment, but I think one thing that maybe stands out is I offered to let her wear my jacket. The shirt that she was wearing was like super short. I was like a low cut, you know, and I didn't want her to like be embarrassed to like boo falling out Well, I didn't say that but like I was Painted or insinuated but like yeah
Starting point is 00:05:40 She was kind of confused and she asked she actually asked me if like I had a problem with what she was kind of confused and she asked, she actually asked me if like, I had a problem with what she was wearing and I didn't, but I did, I backpedaled on the jacket offering. I felt like she understood that I was just trying to look out for her and you know, like I wasn't embarrassed about what she was wearing. I just can't imagine like you're going ax throwing, right? It's probably warm in there. You're going to get even more warm. And the guy I'm on a date with offers me a jacket. But it's like, yeah, that would be a little. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:06:10 I mean, that would kind of rub me the wrong way. Just because like, why does it matter? But they kissed and they hung out after the fact. So she gave him another chance. Yeah, or she's too scared to leave the date. Oh. I mean, I don't think so. But I mean, I could, I guess I could see how maybe she would stay there out of, you know, being embarrassed to not leave.
Starting point is 00:06:31 But like I said, I felt like we moved fast. And sometimes I'm terrible clearly about picking up on social cues. How did you leave everything with her? What was like the last thing that you guys kiss? Yeah, we kissed and then I was just like I had a lot of fun. I'll text you tomorrow and uh love to see you again obviously and you know it was way better than how I'm saying it to you guys right now but I felt like it was... I'm sold.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Okay well we'll try to figure it out for you then we'll play a song, come back and then call her and see if we can get you another date and find out where you're getting ghosted, okay? Thank you, guys. All right, we'll play a song, come back, get your first day follow-up next. Camp Shane, one of America's longest running weight loss camps for kids, promised extraordinary results.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Campers who began the summer in heavy bodies were often unrecognizable when they left. In a society obsessed with being thin, it seemed like a miracle solution. But behind Camp Shane's facade of happy, transformed children was a dark underworld of sinister secrets. Kids were being pushed to their physical and emotional limits as the family that owned Shane turned a blind eye. Nothing about that camp was right.
Starting point is 00:07:45 It was really actually like a horror movie. In this eight-episode series, we're unpacking and investigating stories of mistreatment and reexamining the culture of fatphobia that enabled a flawed system to continue for so long. You can listen to all episodes of Camp Shame one week early and totally ad-free on iHeart
Starting point is 00:08:05 True Crime Plus. So don't wait, head to Apple Podcasts and subscribe today. Have you ever thought about going voiceover? I'm Hope Woodard, a comedian, creator, and seeker of male validation. To most people, I'm the girl behind voiceover, the movement that exploded in 2024. VoiceOver is about understanding yourself outside of sex and relationships. It's more than personal. It's political, it's societal, and at times it's far from what I originally intended it to be. These days, I'm interested in expanding what it means to be voiceover to make it customizable for anyone who feels the
Starting point is 00:08:51 need to explore their relationship to relationships. I'm talking to a lot of people who will help us think about how we love each other. It's a very very normal experience to have times where a relationship is prioritizing other parts of that relationship that are being naked together. How we love our family. I've spent a lifetime trying to get my mother to love me, but the price is too high. And how we love ourselves. Singleness is not a waiting room.
Starting point is 00:09:18 You are actually at the party right now. Let me hear it. Listen to VoiceOver on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I came out because I literally had a contract ripped up in front of me. On a recent episode of Good Game with Sarah Spain, I spotlighted an inspiring out athlete, pro golfer Mel Reed. I think everyone's story is different. I've been very lucky that I've got a very supportive family who literally don't care.
Starting point is 00:09:46 It's a part of me. I'm certainly not ashamed of it. And I think that there should be more representation in. To hear this and more on identity, inclusivity, and the power of being seen, listen to Good Game with Sarah Spayne, an iHeart women's sports production in partnership with Deep Blue Sports and Entertainment on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Brought to you by Novartis, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports Network.
Starting point is 00:10:15 A lot of times the big economic forces we hear about on the news show up in our lives in small ways. Three or four days a week, I would buy two cups of banana pudding. But the price has gone up, so now I only buy one. The demand curve in action, and that's just one of the things we'll be covering on Everybody's Business from Bloomberg Business Week. I'm Max Chafkin. And I'm Stacey Vanek-Smith.
Starting point is 00:10:39 Every Friday, we will be diving into the biggest stories in business, taking a look at what's going on, why it matters, and how it shows up in our everyday lives. With guests like Businessweek editor Brad Stone, sports reporter Randall Williams, and consumer spending expert Amanda Mull, we'll take you inside the boardrooms, the backrooms, even the signal chats that make our economy tick. Hey, I want to learn about VeChain. I want to buy some blockchain or whatever it is that they're doing. So listen to everybody's business on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:11:14 First date follow-up. Powered by the Advocates Injury Attorneys. Online at AdvocatesLaw.com. If you're just joining us for today's first date follow-up, Evan is on the phone and he's getting ghosted by Claire. So we're about to call her and see if she'll tell us why she's ghosting him and maybe get him another date. But first, Evan, why don't you kind of recap things for us real quick?
Starting point is 00:11:34 Yeah, so I want to know if Claire, we had a great day. We went axe throwing. We went out, had, you know, street food afterwards. We talked for hours, ended on a kiss. Everything felt good, but like I haven't talked to her in a month. I've tried texting her a few times and got nothing back. All right. You ready for us to call her?
Starting point is 00:11:54 Yes. Here we go. Hello? Hi, is this Claire? Hi, yeah, this is Claire. Hey, Claire, what's up? This is the Jubel Show. It's a radio show. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Hi, Claire. I'm Nina. I'm Victoria. And I'm Jubel. What's up? How are you? Oh, hi guys. I had no idea people actually did this.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Yeah, they do. How's it going? I'm doing great. I'm doing great. I'm doing great. I'm doing great. I'm doing great. I'm doing great.
Starting point is 00:12:23 I'm doing great. I'm doing great. I'm doing great. I'm doing great. I'm doing great. I'm Jubal. What's up? How are you? Hi guys, I had no idea people actually did this. Yeah, they do How's it going? Hi, how are you all? I'm good. Do you listen to the show? I do. Yeah, I'm the way to work. Great Have you ever heard of first-day follow-up before? I have yeah. Well guess what Claire? Congratulations, you're ghosting somebody and they emailed us to get a hold of you. Yay! Oh my god, is this about Evan?
Starting point is 00:12:55 Yes! You already know it. Yes it is, it's about Evan. He said he really liked you, but can't figure out why you're not calling him back. So, would you mind telling us? Yeah. I might think Adam's a really great guy, but the date was weird. Okay. Weird.
Starting point is 00:13:15 How so? Um, you know, every time he'd throw an act because we went after him, um, he'd scream out someone that he hated. Laughing along and I thought it was funny at first cause he was like, maybe I was zombies or like a name of a serial killer. Okay. Yeah. I was like, okay, this is dark, you know, kind of a dark sense of humor though can be high.
Starting point is 00:13:47 And I was just rolling with it. And then it started to become real people. Yeah, I got more personal on his side because, you know, it was like people from his elementary school, like his third grade coach. How do you know that? Did he tell you that it is like third grade coach and then like through it? Yeah, I was like, he's bad. He's like, oh, my third grade soccer coach.
Starting point is 00:14:14 OK, that's a little murderous. I guess. French much? Yeah, I got creepy. And so that turned you off, I guess, that he was fantasizing about throwing axes into those people's heads. Like other parts of their body. So that turned you off, I guess, that he was fantasizing about throwing axes into those people's heads. I mean, yeah. I mean, yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:27 Like, who was he writing about? People from their elementary school. I guess I could see why that'd be disturbing. Yeah, me too. Did you say anything to him about it or like ask him? Like, how often do you think about throwing axes at my third grade coach? Yeah, I mean, I definitely addressed it. I was like, this just keeps going.
Starting point is 00:14:46 You know, he named Greg from the gym. Another thing is he threw me an ax throwing me unintended. I'm almost thinking I'm on his hit list now. Oh, he did tell us that he sent you an ax throwing me. I guess I would take it that way too. Claire, not to freak you out too much, but Evan is actually on the phone listening and wants to talk to you. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:16 And so like, wait, so that's why you're ghosting me? I was like, it was just, I was just blowing off steam. It wasn't that serious. Oh, so yeah, you're blowing off steam. Yeah. He's shouting about like 15 people and how you, you know, really we're getting into it. I mean, that wasn't just blowing up steam.
Starting point is 00:15:42 You were in your own therapy session. I don't know if that's even there. Is that therapy? First date, come to therapy with me. Yeah. It was all good fun. Come on. Like I was just messing around. It wasn't like, I wasn't actually thinking
Starting point is 00:15:58 about these people. I was just saying their names. It's not a big deal. I mean, messing around is one thing, but you had an axe in your hand both screaming about your childhood enemies and a local guy at the gym and I mean it's just like, come on, that's intense. No thanks, sorry. Come on, like you haven't fantasized about throwing an axe at somebody like from your
Starting point is 00:16:23 life? Come on. It's just like I was just blown off steam. It's not like I was serious. Interesting fantasy. No, I haven't. I haven't fantasized about this. Well, Claire, would you like another date with Evan?
Starting point is 00:16:38 We'll pay for it. You know, I just don't think so. Like I'm all for fun and games, but I need someone who's just a little bit more, I guess like emotionally stable. I am emotionally stable. Okay. Well, I'm sorry, man. You didn't get another date.
Starting point is 00:17:02 That's fine. I don't even want one. Like why is she taking it too seriously? Whatever. I don't, man. You didn't get another date. That's fine. I don't even want one. Like why is she taking it too seriously? Whatever. I don't, not a big deal. Well, good luck. Yeah, sorry, man. And thanks for your time, Claire. Thank you all. Take care.
Starting point is 00:17:14 It was her stupid idea to go on that stupid day anyway. I'm going ass throwing. Thanks for nothing. OK. Jubal's first date follow up. I'm going absolutely. Thanks for nothing. OK. Oh, wow. OK. Jubal's first date follow-up. Camp Shane, one of America's longest-running weight loss camps for kids, promised extraordinary results.
