Hey, everyone.
It's Katie Couric.
Well, the election is in the homestretch, right in time for a new season of
my podcast, Next Question. I'm bringing in some FOKs, friends of Katie's, to help me out, like
Ezra Klein, Jen Psaki, Astead Herndon. But we're also going to have some fun, thanks to some of my
friends like Samantha Bee and Charlemagne the God. We're going to take some viewer questions as well.
I mean, isn't that what democracy is all about?

First date follow-up.
Steve is on the phone today for a first date follow-up,
and he went out with a woman named Danielle
But now Danielle
Who knows where she is
And Steve can't find her because he's not getting a call back
After their date
Steve what's up man how are you
Hey guys how's it going
Good
Not too bad Steve
Sorry that you're being ghosted
Yeah that sucks how long has it been since your date
Um it's been about Three weeks now Steve. Sorry that you're being ghosted. Yeah, that sucks. How long has it been since your date?
Um, it's been about three weeks now since, um, our last date. Okay. So you got on more than one date?
Yeah, we, um, we went on two dates. Okay. And then how many times have you tried to hit her up since your last date? So I sent her three different text messages over about like one a week.
Like not crazy,
but I also called her two times
and left one voicemail.
So, you know, I don't know.
I don't want to keep reaching out to her, but I don't, I don't know what to do.
Well, you did the right thing by emailing us, Steve, because we'll call her in just
a minute and see if we can figure out why she's not calling you back and try to get
you another date.
Before we do that, though, tell us about the date.
How did you meet Danielle and what did you guys do?
Well, we met on Tinder, the app, and we went to a bar for some cocktails.
Okay.
It was our first date, which, you know, I thought it went pretty well then we met up a few days
later and had some more drinks and caught up and I thought I was really
into it something about you Steve makes Steve I'm not you know we joke around
the show something about you just makes me want to take a nap. Not that you're boring.
Like, you just, just the way you tell a story is very soothing.
You sound like very methodical about everything.
Oh, I'm just trying to tell you, you know, all the details of what happened.
It's great.
What I just mean, the cadence and just the way you speak is like...
Jubal wants to take a nap.
Yeah.
Anyway, back to your story.
I'm sorry.
Yeah.
So we went out twice and it was more or less the same drinks and, you know, at a nice bar
and we had conversation.
We talked about our job, our family, and I thought she was really really nice okay and then are you
saying that she didn't respond to any of your text messages or calls or voicemails yeah after the
second date she just disappeared oh man i know i know you guys sometimes call people and I didn't know what
else to do. Why do you think she's not calling you back? If everything was so
went well and you went on two dates, why do you think she's not calling you back? The only thing I could think of is that my profile pictures on Tinder were from a few years ago when I looked slightly younger, but I also...
Why are they two years old?
I don't know. pictures from then and I was a little more overweight, younger and maybe
she thinks I, what's the word
was catfished
now that I lost some weight
What?
I don't know, that's all I could think of
Okay, so you think you look different
though, that much different from your profile pictures
and your pictures that are on Tinder
than who you are now? A little
but I don't think a lot.
But a little, so maybe.
Maybe that's it.
I can't think of anything else.
All right.
Well, we'll try to figure it out for you.
We'll play a song and then come back
and call her and get your first date follow-up
right after this, okay?
Okay.
All right, we'll get your first date follow-up next.
If you're just joining us for today's first date follow-up, Steve is on the phone, and Steve isn't getting a call back from Danielle.
They've actually gone out on two dates, and since their last date, it's been over a week.
He's reached out to her a few times, and she's definitely ghosting him. He doesn't know why.
The only reason he can think of is that maybe he looks a little different from his Tinder pictures.
He said they were two years old. He's lost some weight since then.
And maybe she just doesn't like the way he looks now
as opposed to how he used to look.
But other than that, Steve, you're sure there's nothing else?
I can't think of anything else.
All right.
Well, we'll try to figure it out for you
because you really liked her, right?
Yes.
I did.
I was very interested.
Okay. One more dollar phone was very interested. Okay.
One more.
Dollar phone number right now.
Here we go.
Hello?
Hi, may I speak to Danielle, please?
Yeah, this is she.
Hey, Danielle, how are you?
This is Jubal from a radio show called The Jubal Show.
This is Alex from a radio show called The Jubal Show.
Oh, hi.
Hi.
Why are you guys calling me?
We're calling you today because we do a segment on the show called The First Date Follow-Up.
If you don't know what that is, that's where if you go out on a date with someone and then you end up
ghosting them,
that person can email us to get you on the phone and ask what happened.
And so you went on a date with somebody and ghosted them and they emailed
us.
Oh no.
You're talking about the guy I consider Eeyore.
Eeyore?
Like the cartoon character, the Winnie the Pooh, the sad donkey thing, whatever it is?
His name isn't Eeyore.
No.
His name is Steve, but I call him Eeyore to all my friends.
Oh.
Oh.
Okay.
Yes, it's Steve.
Yes.
Steve emailed us because he told us he went out with you twice
and he really liked you a lot but
you're ghosting him and he doesn't know why and he wants to know why
okay
well I don't know if you had the opportunity
to speak with him
we did
okay so maybe you know what I'm talking about
he speaks so slow
I felt like
I was forced I felt like I was forced.
I felt like I was in like a lecture, like a college lecture.
It was so hard to keep a conversation with him.
Yeah.
Okay, but why did you go out a second time with him then?
Yeah, well, the first time, I thought that maybe he was like drunk or something
because I didn't know it was humanly possible to speak that slowly.
So the second date, I was like, I prepped myself.
I'm like, all right, there's no way that's normal.
So then when I went into the second date and he talked like that throughout the entire time again, I just couldn't do it.
I couldn't even focus on what he was saying because I was watching the clock, seeing how slow he talked.
Slow talker.
And by the way,
it doesn't just stop at how he speaks.
I mean, I got in a car with him.
He drove under the speed limit.
Who does that?
Who drives under the speed limit?
And when he's trying to order something on the menu,
he would consider all of his different options.
It was awful.
I felt like somebody... Torture. It was awful. I felt like somebody, torture.
It was torture.
Yeah, I would definitely not call somebody back if they were going under the speed limit.
That's a deal breaker.
Just the speed limit thing alone.
So basically you think that Steve is just slow at everything.
It's not like he is slow.
He is very intelligent.
I could tell he was intelligent.
But everything that he did in life
was like it was gripped in molasses.
It was so slow.
And I felt like I was oozing
when I was sitting across from him.
And I'm like,
oh my God,
I can't do this.
Aw.
I really wish he wasn't so attractive
so I could just break this whole thing off.
I mean,
he is attractive.
He's sexy. Aw. You know. Slow. You just can he is attractive. He's sexy.
Aw.
You know.
Slow.
You just can't get over the slowness.
I could.
I can't.
All right.
Torture.
Well, thank you for telling us.
We appreciate it.
Also, I should let you know
that he is on the phone listening
and wants to talk to you.
Ooh.
Steve?
Oh.
Hey.
So, I didn't realize that you're so impatient.
I'm not impatient.
It's just it was beyond possible for me to sit for as long as you tell a story.
But this was impossible.
And also, yeah, I mean, I'm sorry.
I would have been a little bit kinder if I knew that you were on the phone.
But I mean, has no one ever told you that before?
No, I've never heard that.
But, you know, I do like to take my time, especially when I tell stories.
So I can relay all the details.
And yeah, when I drive, I like to obey the law.
So I drive the speed limit.
Do you have an issue with that?
I just feel like that lifestyle is not for me.
It seems like you want somebody who is okay
while you look over the menu
and pictures of every single dish.
I just am more of like a let's get it done kind of person.
So I just don't think it's the right fit.
Well, why wouldn't you want to read all of the different menu items?
You could be missing out on something that you'll like.
Yeah, I think I'm missing out on my life when I'm just
sitting there wasting time.
So, that's my perspective.
Oh, wow. Well,
this is a
surprise. I mean,
I don't even know
what to say, and
maybe this isn't going to work out.
Well, let's see.
Danielle, would you like to go on another date with Steve?
We'll pay for it.
No, thank you.
But I wish you the best of luck, Steve.
Okay, well, yeah.
Good luck, I guess, to you, too.
Have fun running around the rat race so fast with someone else. I'll stop
and smell the roses with someone
better, someone nicer
who can appreciate
taking the time and enjoying the brighter
things in life.
Well, okay. Good luck with that
and good luck with
stopping to smell every
single rose
that's going up on time, Daddy.
