Hey, everyone.
It's Katie Couric.
Well, the election is in the homestretch, right in time for a new season of
my podcast, Next Question. I'm bringing in some FOKs, friends of Katie's, to help me out, like
Ezra Klein, Jen Psaki, Astead Herndon. But we're also going to have some fun, thanks to some of my
friends like Samantha Bee and Charlemagne the God. We're going to take some viewer questions as well.
I mean, isn't that what democracy is all about?

The Jubal Show on demand.
First date follow-up.
Trick is on the phone today for a first date follow-up,
and he's not getting a call back from a woman he went on a date with named Danielle.
I guess it's been 10 days since they went out, and he's being ghosted.
That's nerve-wracking.
Patrick?
What's up, man?
Sorry to hear that, Patrick.
Hey.
I mean, things could be better.
So you said it's been 10 days since you went out with her.
How many times have you tried to get a hold of her in that 10 days?
I mean, I've tried not to overdo it.
But, yeah, I've texted her. I've called her, I've messaged her on Hinge.
On Hinge?
You know, in case.
Is that one of those dating sites that I don't know about?
I mean, I've heard of something, but.
It's a dating app.
Okay.
Okay, so you met her on Hinge?
On Tinder or something.
Okay.
Yeah.
Okay.
Did y'all originally meet on Hinge?
Yeah, we met on Hinge and like texted for like weeks before coming up like with a good time for us to meet up
gotcha like i feel like we were really connected okay so you didn't hear back from her so you text
and called her and when she didn't text or call you back you resorted to the app where you originally
met her well yeah in case like had her number wrong or she changed her number or something like
i just figured why not give it a shot fair point point. That'd be a really bad date if she takes the road after 10 days.
Maybe she lost her phone or something.
You don't know.
You never know.
That's true.
But people get a new phone and then iCloud backup.
Yeah.
Cause I thought the day went well.
So I didn't see why she, otherwise why she wouldn't message me back.
Right.
Well tell us about the date then.
What did you guys do?
Well, we, uh, we ended up going out for coffee and I'm a big coffee guy like i guess i'm probably like
a snob about coffee um i think that might have been kind of annoying weird i mean it is important
like i like coffee too and i know good coffee it depends you know there's people that know good
coffee that like coffee and then there's the people who would be like a pretentious wine snob
with coffee you know you don't want to go out on a date with someone like that either well how long
were you talking about it for i mean you know that wasn't the whole night but we were
drinking coffee so there was a lot to talk about coffee wise and you have a lot of knowledge in
coffee so maybe trying to impress her with a little bit of your coffee knowledge yeah i thought
i was coming off as like interesting yeah that was that was what i was hoping at least okay and
do you feel like you didn't come off interesting? I think I, honestly, the vibe I thought was fine.
But like, when I look back, that's the two things that I think I may have messed up on
are the coffee talk and I may not have tipped enough.
Oh, how much did you tip?
What percent?
Well, it's coffee, right?
It's not like a restaurant, but like a buck a cup.
A lot of people don't even tip at coffee, I feel like. So a dollar's a lot. It a buck a cup. A lot of people don't even tip at coffee.
So a dollar's a lot
per cup.
Coffee already be expensive.
That couldn't possibly be it.
I get screwed when I tip for coffee.
Whenever I tip for coffee,
because I always just do a standard amount
and I don't think about it because bad was math
so I don't think about
that's actually 90%.
You know, it'll be a $3 coffee.
And I'm like, here's two bucks.
And I'm like, wait a second.
I just gave.
I just doubled my charge.
So I always tip too much.
So you didn't tip very much.
Do you think she noticed that?
I'm just racking my brain trying to think of why she wouldn't text me back.
And that's all I got.
Okay.
And the thing about it is I wouldn't be trying to get in touch with her so much.
I didn't think she was so cool.
Like, I really think we had a pretty good day I mean honestly I just thought we vibed really
really well like I thought we had like not only like an intellectual connection but like an
emotional connection I don't know if I believe in the one but like it definitely had that kind of
vibe like it's someone I really do want to be with, I think.
I want to get to know her more.
I really,
I'm crushing on her hard.
Well, I want to know
why she's not calling you back.
The only things
you can think of are
maybe you were a coffee snob
and you didn't tip enough.
That's it?
Yeah, maybe.
And you didn't hear
from her at all,
at all,
like after the date?
For 10 days.
No.
No, not in 10 days.
How did things end
with you guys?
Hopefully you put a mint in if you kissed before you kissed.
Because coffee date, gross.
Coffee breath is terrible.
You know, it was a casual afternoon date.
There wasn't like a good opening for a kiss.
But it wasn't like I felt like she was avoiding one.
It was more just like, you know.
Like not an opportunity.
A date during the day, if it's your first date, it usually doesn't end in a kiss.
It's a weird, I mean, it's a hard time to find.
It is like a weird thing.
It's like a matinee or something. It is.
It is exactly like a matinee.
That's exactly what a first date during the day is like.
And you're like, I don't know if I should kiss.
I mean, at night it feels better, right?
It does.
And I didn't want to like force. I just wanted to roll with it.
Right.
Okay, so no kiss.
You guys parted ways.
You talked about going out again.
And then she's been ghosting you ever since.
Yeah, that's pretty much it.
All right, well, we'll try to figure it out for you.
We'll play a song, come back, and then call her and get your first date follow-up right after this.
Right in the middle of your first date follow-up, if you're just joining us, Patrick is on the phone.
He's a coffee snob that's not getting a call back from danielle yep okay i'm not sure if i'd go so far
as to say i'm a snob okay kind of a coffee i'm particular kind of particular about his coffee
and he took danielle out to get coffee he said that he thought she really enjoyed it he thinks
he might not be getting a call back because he's really into coffee talked a lot about it may have
talked too much about it, and came
off like a coffee snob. Also, I guess he
didn't tip very well. I think he tipped great.
Yeah, I mean, it's coffee, so
you know, a couple bucks is okay. They parted ways.
It's been 10 days, and she's been ghosting him.
He's reached out to her a bunch of times, and he's heard nothing.
So we're about to call her right now and see if we can
figure out if she's not calling him back because
of his coffee snobbery, or because of his
bad tippery, or because of something else that we can put an erie on something else yeah something else
wasn't filling the vibrate yeah
all right here we go patrick i'm gonna dial the phone right now
hello hi may i speak to Danielle, please?
This is Danielle.
Who's this?
Hi, Danielle.
This is Jubal from a radio show called The Jubal Show.
Hi, Danielle.
This is Alex from The Jubal Show.
It's a radio show called The Jubal Show.
Hi, Danielle.
This is Christian from The Jubal Show.
It's called...
I forgot what we were saying, but hi, this is The Jubal Show.
Yeah, don't worry about it.
Hi.
Oh, my goodness.
How's it going, guys?
Hi.
Hi.
Hi.
So, it sounds like you've heard of us. Oh, yeah. Of course I've heard of you guys. Oh. Oh, my goodness. How's it going, guys? Hi. Hi. Hi. So it sounds like you've heard of us.
Oh, yeah.
Of course I've heard of you guys.
Oh.
Oh, okay.
Wow.
Thanks for listening.
Yeah.
Thank you very much.
How often do you listen to the show?
Oh, yeah.
I listen all the time, especially whenever I'm like in the car and I need something entertaining
to listen to.
Hey, you know, Danielle, you can also stream it on Alexa by saying, Alexa, stream The Jubal
Show.
I think you can.
I don't know.
Or you can go to our website, thejubalshow.com.
I'm using this point right here in the first date follow-up for shameless promotion.
No, but for real, like, why are you guys calling me?
Did I win?
Well, I don't know.
That's up to you, I guess.
Yeah.
When you figure out exactly what you're doing, you'll see if you won or if you lost.
What does that mean?
It means that this is a first date follow-up.
It's the segment that we do where if you go out on a date with somebody. I know. I've heard of this if you lost. What does that mean? It means that this is a first date follow-up. It's
the segment that we do where if you go out on a date with somebody. I've heard of this, you guys.
Okay. Yeah. If you go on a date with someone and then you end up ghosting them, they can email us
to get you on the phone and ask what happened. So it's really up to you if you win or lose on
this one. So do you know who we're talking about? Is it Patrick? Do you think it's Patrick? I mean, I'm ghosting two people and Patrick is one of them.
Oh.
All right.
Well, I appreciate the honesty.
Bingo.
It's not the other one.
Yeah.
It's Patrick.
Yep.
Patrick emailed us because he wants to know why you're not calling him back.
Oh, my God.
I mean, well, I don't really want to, like, you know, get into it.
If it looks bad on you or you're uncomfortable sharing something about yourself, that's fine, you know.
But if it's about Patrick, he wants to know.
And we tell everybody that wants to do a first date follow up.
You might hear something you don't want to hear.
He really liked going out with you and he wants to know why you're not calling him back.
What did he tell you guys?
He said that he took you to coffee.
He thought you guys had a really good time.
He thinks he might have turned you off because he's a coffee snob and talks a lot about coffee and might have talked too much about coffee.
And then he also thinks that maybe you aren't interested anymore
because he didn't tip very well.
That's what he told us.
Other than that, he said you were amazing, though.
He said a lot of nice things.
Okay, so I didn't think he was a coffee snob.
I actually kind of found that, you know,
side of the conversation kind of interesting.
The tipping thing, I did notice.
But at least he tipped, you know, not everybody tips at a coffee shop.
Well, how much?
I mean, seriously, he said he took a dollar on each drink.
I'm confused because that's like more than 20%. Alex needs to know. It was a lot. Not everybody tips at a coffee shop. Seriously, he said he took a dollar on each drink.
I'm confused because that's more than 20%. Alex needs to know.
That's a lot.
I'm just like, how much do you expect him to tip?
It's not like we were there for a little while.
We were hanging out.
They were giving us refills and they were helping us.
Well, there's refills.
We were taking up space in the shop.
Did you get food?
It's not like we just came and got it.
Did you get food, a muffin or anything?
I mean, I got a little scone.
I mean, those are the details
that I need to know.
Because if you got some food,
you know,
then maybe it should have
been more of a take.
It makes the price go up.
Yeah,
it changes everything.
It does.
There wasn't a huge deal.
It's not the reason why,
you know.
Can you tell us why then?
Well,
you know,
by the end of the date,
you know,
when we're talking about
maybe hanging out again,
he mentioned,
you know,
having like a pizza
and a movie sort of night at his place.
Well, Netflix and chill.
And also he mentioned it's his parents' house.
Oh, he lives with his parents?
Yeah, I guess so.
It's his parents' house.
Absolutely not.
He doesn't sound like a high schooler.
It's a no for me.
Definitely not a teenager.
Did you ask him why he lives at home?
Because there could be a legit reason.
There also could be
a reason where it is a red flag.
I'm not sure why he does, but
definitely wasn't, you know, something that attracted
me to coming over for the next date.
And also, like, I did mention this to him
as well. Like, I'm lactose and
gluten intolerant, so I can't have
pizza at all. They have vegan
pizza. Have you ever had
vegan pizza? Yes, I have.
And it tastes exactly like vegan pizza would.
It tastes exactly like vegan pizza.
Yeah.
Horrible.
But they do have it.
Maybe he was thinking about that.
I don't know.
But living with his parents, I could see that.
I mean, I wouldn't be interested in someone if I started dating them at this point in
life and they lived with their parents.
That'd be kind of weird for me.
Like, what is his mom going to do?
Like, pour us, like, some Coke?
You know?
Out of a two-eater. He's like a lot. His mom makes extra ice cubes. be kind of weird for me like what is his mom gonna do like pour us like some cokes you know i get that all right well thank you for being honest appreciate that and i'm curious why he lives with his parents how about you danielle are you curious dying to know well that's lucky
because he's on the phone listing and wants to talk to you oh yeah hi sorry i forgot to tell you about that one oops oh my goodness we
did it hi patrick sorry hi all right i gotta clear up something right now i don't live with my
parents my parents own the house like it's their old house that they moved out of and then i moved
into it oh but i live there by myself oh i mean well like why'd you call it your parents house
like that's kind of confusing the
honest answer is i'm a little insecure about it so like i feel like i'm lying if i say it's my house
so i i you're truthful like my parents own the house i'm living there but it's my parents house
okay i get that okay sorry i'm eating i get that though because if i was dating someone i wouldn't
want them to think that i owned this house i would want them to know that i was living in my parents house that they owned so when they found out it was my parents house I wouldn't want them to think that I owned this house. I would want them to know that I was living in my parents' house that they owned.
So when they found out it was my parents' house, they wouldn't go, you try to play it off.
It wouldn't be weird later.
Yeah.
Exactly.
Right.
Yeah.
I tend to over say the truth so no one thinks I'm lying later.
Yeah.
Danielle, look, they don't live there.
I pay for everything that the house needs.
It is functionally, if not legally, my house.
So I'd still be up for a second date
if you'd be up for it we can eat whatever you want oh at his house or not wherever wherever
whenever wherever whatever i really i really would like to meet up again if you're up for it
i mean you know what do you think danielle would you like to go on another date with patrick we'll
pay for it i think you should do it.
It seems like this was all kind of just like a
miscommunication, you know, so I think
I'd be willing to give it another try.
Yay!
As long as you promise
you don't live with your parents, then I won't have
to, you know, worry about your mom checking up
on us or anything like that.
I'm walking in on you.
Are you allowed to lock your bedroom
door with a girl?
So many questions.
Look, I promise,
no parents,
unless you want
my mom to whip up
a vegan gluten-free pizza.
We don't want her
to whip up nothing.
Mom can stay
at her house.
I think it's
a second date.
Yes.
All right.
Oh my God, yay.
Congratulations, Patrick.
Awesome.
You got a second date.
Thanks, Danielle.
I can't wait
to see you, Patrick.
I'm glad we got this all cleared up. I'm excited to see you again. Aw, have fun, guys. Have fun, y. Awesome. You got a second date. Thanks, Danielle. I can't wait to see you, Patrick. I'm glad we got this all cleared up.
I'm excited to see you again.
Aw, have fun, guys.
