And she said, Johnny, the kids didn't come home last night. Along the central Texas plains, teens are dying, suicides that don't make sense, strange accidents, and brutal murders. In what seems to be, a plot ripped straight out of Breaking Bad. drugs, alcohol, trafficking of people.

And I'm Maitego Mejahuan, and this week on our podcast, Hungry for History, we talk oysters, plus the Mianbe Chief stops by. If you're not an oyster lover, don't even talk to me. Ancient Athenians used to scratch names.
Starting point is 00:01:27 onto oyster shells to vote politicians into exile. So our word ostracize is related to the word oyster. No way. Bring back the OsterCon. Listen to Hungry for History on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Michael Lewis here. My bestselling book, The Big Short, tells the story of the buildup and burst of the U.S. housing market back in 2008.
Starting point is 00:01:55 A decade ago, the Big Short was made in a U.S. short. an Academy Award-winning movie. And now I'm bringing it to you for the first time as an audiobook narrated by yours truly. The Big Short Story, what it means to bet against the market, and who really pays for an unchecked financial system,
Starting point is 00:02:11 is as relevant today as it's ever been. Get the Big Short now at Pushkin.fm.fm. Or wherever audiobooks are sold. I'm Robert Smith, and this is Jacob Goldstein, and we used to host a show called Planet Money. And now we're back making this new podcast called Business History
Starting point is 00:02:30 about the best ideas and people and businesses in history and some of the worst people, horrible ideas, and destructive companies in the history of business. First episode, How Southwest Airlines Use Cheap Seats and Free Whiskey to fight its way into the airline is. The most Texas story ever. Listen to Business History on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:02:53 First Day to Follow-up, powered by the Advocates in America. Jule is on the phone today for a first date follow-up, and she's getting ghosted by a guy named Patrick, so in a few minutes we'll call him and see if he'll tell us why he's ghosting her and maybe get her a second date. But first, Jewel, how long has it been since you heard from old Pat? Hey, you guys, it's been over a week, which feels embarrassing to say, but yeah. Okay, so why don't you tell us about the date, and we'll see if there's any holes. Thank you. I appreciate it. Okay, so we were having a really great time. Obviously, he's cute. Like, I saw his pictures before I met him. We met on an app. So, you know, matched the picture, like really cute. I specifically love his dimples. Like, I have a thing for people with dimples. And when he laughed, he's really got him. And he was like a gentleman. He was definitely confident, but not overtly.
Starting point is 00:03:55 like kind of a quiet, confident guy. And he actually listened to me. That was probably what stood out the most because I've been on so many first dates where people are like checking out. And he was actually paying attention. He remembered like the names of my family members I mentioned and stuff about work. And that was so nice. That's cool.
Starting point is 00:04:16 That's not crazy. Like what are things you expect people to remember? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, exactly. also another thing that I've never seen before he ordered dessert so confidently like I feel like guys are weird about dessert sometimes and he was just like
Starting point is 00:04:33 took charge, got the brownies it was like amazing I'm attracted to that you know sure and then we we like had such a good time at dinner that we extended the date which was unexpected we decided to get a nightcap so we like walked to a cute rooftop bar and then we get in there and we're going to sit at the bar and
Starting point is 00:05:02 this is so embarrassing I like misjudged the height of the stool because it was one of those tall bar stools I fell which is embarrassing enough but I didn't just fall when I fell I reached instinctively to grab for something to hold on to, and I fully grabbed his jewels. Oh. Like, fully grab. Yikes. That's something to hold
Starting point is 00:05:29 on to, I guess. Ow. Wait, he passed. He's passed in the first date. What did he do? Well, he, like, he took it like a man. He didn't, like, make a big deal or cry or whatever, but I, you guys, like, I didn't just grab and let go.
Starting point is 00:05:46 I was holding as I was falling, so I was yanked. No, like not in a good way. How did he react? Well, at first he, like I said, he was just, like, kind of like, like, sucking it in or whatever, like not. But he couldn't help it when I actually pulled, he yelped because he can't help it. Like, I don't blame him. But then everybody noticed, obviously. So then it was like dramatic and what's going on.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Like, you know, it was a rooftop bar. So it's like you could actually hear him scream. It's not like we're in a small dive bar. Like everyone was looking. Not cute. And it just felt like the whole vibe shifted after that, obviously. Like I had trouble recovering. I was like apologizing a lot and trying to keep conversation going, but it was so uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:06:41 And I just felt really bad. But everything before that was so good. Right. So I'm like, you know, we probably sent another 20 minutes there and then just kind of like awkwardly wrapped it up. And he did, he did walk me to my Uber and make sure like I got home safe and everything. But then I never heard from him again. Oh, no. And it was an accident.
Starting point is 00:07:06 I don't know. We'll see if that is it. We'll play a song, come back and then call him and see if he'll tell us why he's ghosting you and maybe get you a second date, okay? Thank you. Yep. We'll get your first day follow up. next right in the middle of your first date follow up and if you're just joining us
Starting point is 00:07:20 Jewel is on the phone and she's getting ghosted by a guy named Patrick so we're about to call him and see if he'll tell us why he's ghosting her and maybe get her another date but first Jewel why don't you recap your date with Patrick real quick. Grabindoll so we had an amazing first date
Starting point is 00:07:37 Italian spot all the way through dessert, great time decided to extend the date, went for a nightcap on a rooftop bar and I misjudged the height of the bar fell and on the way down really firmly grabbed his junk
Starting point is 00:07:52 it shifted the vibe and then spent about 20 more minutes together and then never heard from him again so really really hoping we could salvage it right right yeah all right well we'll see if that is the reason or if it's something else are you ready for us to call him yes we're okay here we go Hello?
Starting point is 00:08:23 Hi, man, I speak to Patrick, please. Speaking. Hey, Patrick, how are you? This is a radio show. It's called The Jubal Show. Hi, Patrick. I'm Nina. Hi, I'm Victoria.
Starting point is 00:08:31 And I'm Freeze. And my name is Jubal. How are you? Whole party's here. Good. How are y'all doing? What's this? Not bad.
Starting point is 00:08:39 Thanks for asking. Have you ever listened to the show before? No, I can't say that I have. Okay. So we do a segment on the show called the First Day Follow-up. where if you go out on a date with somebody and you end up ghosting them, that person can email us to call you
Starting point is 00:08:53 and find out why you're ghosting them, and we got an email about you from somebody. Oh, okay, whoa. Any idea who would email us? Yeah, no, it's kind of a surprise I wasn't expecting. I was hoping I went a car or something. Yeah, me too. Maybe better.
Starting point is 00:09:08 Any idea who it would be? Nah, I can't say that I can think of it right now. It's kind of, I feel bad. It's a little awkward. It was a date I think you would remember because you ended up getting grabbed in the junk on accident. You yell. Okay, yeah. You're talking about Jewel, right?
Starting point is 00:09:28 Yes. Is that the person? Yep. Jewel emailed us. She said that she thought you were awesome, but you've been ghosting her and she doesn't know why. Would you mind telling us? Yeah. I mean, this is really weird.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Yeah, so Jewel told me when we were on the date that she doesn't. trust people who walk fast. I don't know. I mean, if he said that if someone walks with urgency, they're hiding something, and I don't know. I couldn't unhear it. I mean, like, I walk fast and kind of felt like a personal attack. I mean, like, I hate slow walkers, you know? Like, walk with some intention, with some urgency. You just, you're milling around on your phone. I'm trying to get somewhere. And, you know, I just, I don't know, I just felt like a personal attack. I just couldn't unhear it. So you thought she was like being passive-aggressive with you
Starting point is 00:10:16 and like, you know, I don't trust you because you walk fast? Yeah, yeah, I just, I don't know, like I'm just walking and like everyone has their own pace. I mean, I would appreciate it if we're walking all together in a public space. You'd walk with some intention and not like we're in a park on it. But he's dragging her up the street. I'm not going to judge you for walking slow. I'm just saying, you know, I'm not going to sit here and be like, oh, well, slow walkers are terrible people or trying to hide something. Sure.
Starting point is 00:10:41 It doesn't go as much. Okay. A huge jump, I didn't. So you weren't hiding anything. No, no I probably said to be somewhere Yeah, so that's why She doesn't trust people that walk fast
Starting point is 00:10:54 And that was really weird to me, so I didn't call her back All right, well, thank you for telling us, man, I appreciate it I'll also let you know right now that Jewel is on the phone And has been listening and wants to talk to you You know they're here right now? Yeah Hi, hi Patrick
Starting point is 00:11:10 Hey, Jewel what's up well I feel like this is kind of ridiculous I wasn't attacking you I was just stating my opinion like it was not a personal attack on you I mean you said people who walk fast are either running from guilt or running from taxes you said you said this while I was walking next to you on our way to grab a nightcap it just it's all okay first of all you were walking like somebody owed you money like I just thought you were cold or really excited about getting the drink like that's my normal pace that's how my legs work that's my natural speed one foot in front of the other pace well your natural speed
Starting point is 00:11:52 made me feel like I was reenacting a chase scene from a crime documentary like I had to take five steps for every one of your steps you called me specifically athletic in public like what does that even mean
Starting point is 00:12:03 it wasn't an insult it was an observation like you moved like you train for mall walking championship I'm trying to get it to the recess before the bar got crowded. Well, I've never seen anybody walk that fast,
Starting point is 00:12:19 and I think you're being dramatic. Like, nobody was looking. The bartender literally asked if you're good because you whispered, why did you speedwalk? Is he hiding something? So she really leaned into this theory. Like, lean into it hard. Patrick, to be honest, one lady looked at you
Starting point is 00:12:36 like you were about to steal a purse. Like, she was clutching her bag like it was a newborn. Were you being placed? Or, like, were you being kind of like playfully passive aggressive? I felt like I was like flirting and trying to make it sort of more normal feeling by just calling it out because it was so weird. But I wouldn't have, I would have still done enough. I would have before this till done another second date. Like, it's not like it stuck with me or bothered me that much.
Starting point is 00:13:08 But I guess it bothered you. I don't see what you're asking me right now. like you went around the whole bar, damn they're asking them if I was walking fast. I feel like that's enough for a person to say no. You did that, Jewel? We're just meeting. So what if I'm walking fast? That's just who I am as a person.
Starting point is 00:13:27 If that's not something that you can accept, why would I want to keep talking to the person? Well, just in my own defense, I did feel like I had to make a joke of it and tell people because they were looking and it was so weird. So I was kind of like cleaning up after you. I don't know. no one was looking at us no one cared about what we were doing we walked into the bar we got there before it got busy that's why i was walking like that's the way i walk and like that's probably at help us we would have not gotten there would have been busy we wouldn't even
Starting point is 00:13:57 gotten a seat no one cared about no one cared about me walking in the bar trust me i can tell people were talking about it and it was awkward oh so now you're a reminder now you read everyone's mind in the bar and you knew that everyone had a problem with me walking fast well then I guess you can read my mind right now well Patrick would you like another date with Jewel we'll pay for it no I think I can say that I don't want to date anyone who thinks
Starting point is 00:14:21 my walking pace is a moral flaw yeah and I don't even know why I wanted a second date because you're walking as psycho and so was this interaction psycho and this interaction
Starting point is 00:14:35 psycho okay yeah psycho okay Joel you know I'll be the cycle who walks with purpose while you lollygagging your way through life. Oh. You bought a lollygag. Oh, yes. It's 1900 and I'm a lollygagger.
Starting point is 00:14:51 I cannot believe I wanted another date with you. Jubil's first date follow-up.
