First date of follow-up, powered by the Advocates Injury Attorneys, online at Advocateslaw.com.
Molly is on the phone today for a first date follow-up, and she's getting ghosted by a guy named Rafe.
So in a few minutes, we're going to call him and see if they'll tell us why he's ghosting her
and maybe get her another date.
But first, Molly, how long has it been since you heard from Rafe?
It's been like 90s, so not terrible, but like long enough that I'm, you know, kind of wondering where he's at.
Totally.
Yeah.
When was the last time you hit him up?
Two days ago, I, okay, well, I'll tell you, my statement to him will make sense when I tell you what the date was.
Okay.
I asked him if he was feeling like a winner because I thought that was flirty in context.
he hadn't heard anything back
nothing okay
he wasn't feeling like a winner
he probably tells us about it
yeah tell us a little bit about the date
yeah well the date I thought was great
we went to this retro arcade bar
so it was like totally 80 themed
kind of stranger things vibes
but with alcohol
but we were in like full competition
mode and I bodied him
in ski ball
like absolutely
absolutely crushed him
there was maybe some light trash talk
and maybe called him
Grandpa hands when he missed the 100 hole
but I thought it was flirty he laughed at the time
and then we shared a giant pretzel
and he wiped mustard off my face
so I thought he was going to kiss me
I was like okay kiss me now
but he didn't
but we did slow dance next to the DDR machine
so it felt kind of like weirdly romantic
Is that stupid?
Not at all.
I think that sounds fun.
I mean, that feels like he was vibing with you too.
Yeah, somebody else played Celine Dion Machia on DDR, which is a weird pick.
But we slow dance to that.
And he was just really funny.
I thought the mustard thing was cute.
And I thought we were having fun playing the game.
So I don't know.
I thought it went great.
I really had a great time.
So why do you think he's ghosting you then?
Okay.
So I thought about this a lot.
And there was one moment where I kind of tried to do like a sexy lean while I was talking to him.
I was like playing with my hair.
And I leaned against this life-size Sonic the Hedgehog statue.
And I kind of knocked it completely over onto the ground.
Oh.
Okay.
You think that would be why he would ghost you?
It's the only thing I could think of.
It made like a really loud crash.
Like I think like it, a light flickered, a guy,
yelled at me
I was like
I don't know if he works there
he was just nearby
but I'm wondering
if I like embarrassed him or something
I feel like
I feel like we left shortly after that
so it was just like a weird shift in the energy
what was he doing when you did that
was he trying to help you up was he like
are you okay
did he walk away
he didn't walk away but he
was just kind of I think he was
shocked and I would we were just kind of
standing there looking around stupidly and a guy who worked there ended up like coming over
and picking it up but yeah he was i i apologize to him and he was like oh my god it's totally
fine but we left not that long after that so that's like the only thing i can think of right i
really hope it's not that okay yeah we'll check it out for you um we'll play a song come back
and then call him and see if he'll tell us why he's ghosting you and maybe get you a second date
okay that sounds great all right we'll get your first day follow up next

In 1920, a magazine article announced something incredible.
Two young girls had photographed real fairies.
But even more extraordinary than the magazine article's claim
was the identity of the man who wrote the article, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle,
the man who wrote Sherlock Holmes.
Yes, the man who invented.
literature's most brilliant detective was fooled by two girls into thinking fairies were real.
How did they do it?
And why does it seem like so many smart people keep falling for outlandish tricks?
These are the questions we explore in hoax, a new podcast from me, Dana Schwartz, the host of Noble Blood.
And me, Lizzie Logan.
Every episode will explore one of the most audacious and ambitious tricks in history.
from the fake Shakespeare's to balloon boys
and try to answer the question
of why we believe what we believe.

If you're just joining us for today's first date follow-up,
Molly is on the phone,
and she's getting ghosted by a guy named Rafe,
so we're about to call him
and see if he'll tell us why he's ghosting her
and maybe get her a second date,
Before we do that, Molly, refresh our memory on your date real quick.
We went to this, like, 80s-themed retro bar arcade situation, and I played a bunch of games,
and I thought it went really well, but then I knocked over a gigantic Sonic the Hedgehog statue
and made a big noise, and I think that's maybe why he's ghosting me.
It should be so awful.
Yeah, that would be weird to get ghosted for knocking over a Sonic the Hedgehog statue.
I mean, it's embarrassing, but I just feel like you would have been like, oh, it's okay.
All right, are you ready for us to call him?
Yeah, I'm ready.
Okay, here we go.
Hello.
Hi, man, I speak to Rafe, please.
Is he?
Hey, Raph, how are you?
This is a radio show.
It's called The Jubal Show.
Hi, Rave, I'm Nina.
Hi, I'm Victoria.
And my name is Jubel.
What's up?
Hi, how's the calling?
Pretty good.
Is this a prank?
No, it's not.
Have you ever listened to the show before?
Yeah, I've seen the prank phone calls on a TikTok.
So is that what this is?
No, this is not a prank phone call.
We actually do another segment on the show.
It's called the first date follow-up.
That's where if you go on a date with somebody and you ghost them,
that person can have us call you to ask why you're ghosting them.
And we got an email about you.
Is this about Molly?
Yes, it is.
It's about Molly. Molly emailed us.
Told us a little bit about your date.
It said she really liked you, but she's confused because it's been over nine days and you haven't talked to her.
And she's wondering why.
Would you mind telling us?
Okay.
I know this sounds crazy.
I'm ghosting her because she beat me in every single game.
Okay.
But why are you ghosting her, though?
I mean, look, I'm not saying I need to, like, win all the time or something.
something, but I lost
ski ball, air hockey,
Pac-Ban, and somehow
she got the high score
on time crisis
about eating nachos. I mean, it was insane.
Whoa. Well, it sounds
impressive, though, Rafe.
I mean, she annihilated me.
I mean, it was crazy.
Every time I tried to make this
comeback, she'd give me this little
kitty, like, aw-aw,
noise. I mean, I've heard it in my sleep.
She devastated you that much.
that she beat you at all the games that you guys played yeah i mean you know i'm not trying to be
like her ego about it but i mean she was calling me rife the redeemed once after i didn't
get like a single prize from the you know the claw machine thing that's like impossible to
win yeah i don't know like that's the name like mixed with you i've already get made fun of
for my name enough so getting that tagged on to it doesn't help you know so you are hurt by it
yeah i mean it was i am mad about it like she you should it shouldn't a date shouldn't be this
insane competition like you should be you know we're not actually trying to like beat each other
so badly at these games we should let me win a little bit all right well thank you for
telling us why you're ghosting her and raf i'll let you know that she's actually on the phone
and wants to talk to you you really ghosted me because i'm better at ski ball oh my god
you're here
were you
actually scared off by a woman
who can multitask nachos
and a game
I wasn't prepared for your
raw terrifying talent
okay
I mean I thought we were having a good time
you could have just asked me for a rematch
instead of like vanishing
into the arcade mist
like a sore loser ninja
or something
oh she right there
what sore loser
ninja. You're just like full of names for me.
I was just, I thought we were, I thought we were ribbing. I'm sorry. It was supposed to be,
maybe I'm bad at flirting. You thought that was flirting. You thought that humiliated me
in this arcade in front of all these kids was flirting. Not the kids.
I really, I do, I do feel bad that I hurt your feelings. I really do. I didn't mean to
like, roast you hard enough. I didn't think you were going to take it personally. I was just trying
to be like fun and competitive
with it but
I mean I would
I'll keep that in mind
I'll definitely
curved
it was kind of aggressive
I'm just saying
I'm just saying it was a little
I'm usually not
I'm not trying to be like fragile
or whatever but remember that 10 year old was laughing
at me I mean
yeah I didn't remember
you remember that and you remember when you
you turn to him and went
keep practicing so you don't end up like this guy
and that was emaculating
I'm sorry, I have all brothers, so it's just like, I guess I, I think I overcompensated
because I'm used to be the one who's getting teased.
I'm an only child, so.
Right, well, Rafe, would you like another date with Molly?
We'll pay for it.
I don't know.
I mean, why should I give you another chance?
I mean, that was mortifying.
I'm just saying.
It started out fun and frivolous, but then it got, you know, kind of aggressive in a way that it just wasn't fun for me.
So, I don't know.
What do you think, Molly, do you think?
I like to you.
I liked you because you were easy to talk to.
You made me laugh.
It didn't seem like you had to try too hard.
I, like, went on a weird branch about claw machines at one point, and you, like, really listened to me.
and you were even really calm
when I knocked over that Sonic statue
you didn't make it
off too weird
knocked over
you kicked it
you kicked it because you were pissed
because you lost that game
finally
you said finally
you knocked it over Molly
I did kick it
right
come on
but I really do
I like I said
I have all brothers
and I think I just got
way too competitive and aggressive with it, but I really do like you, and I don't have to be
like this all the time. We can do something totally non-competitive and chill if you wanted to
go out on another date. What do you think, Rave? One more try. When we were talking, you were
extremely affable and really cool to talk to before all the video games and me getting poned in front
of children.
Before that, it was really cool.
I really think we were making a connection, sincerely.
So, yeah, yeah, I would go for a second date.
I would.
I know I messed up, but it was maybe being a little too sensitive.
And, you know, I let way too much time go by.
And, you know, I felt dumb about reaching back out.
Like, I was going to be like, hey, remember me?
Remember when I rage quit ski ball?
How could you forget?
That makes me really glad to hear.
I really like you too.
Sweet.
Thanks for being willing to give me a second chance.
Congratulations, Molly.
You got another day.
No games, though.
Maybe this time we can try something more of your speed.
We'll, like, stay home and watch a homework movie or something.
Emotional.
Jubel's first date follow-up.
