Are you desperately hoping for change in 2026, but feeling stuck? I'm Dr. Lari Santos, and in a new year series of my show, The Happiness Lab,
Starting point is 00:02:20 I'm going to look at the science of getting, well, unstuck at work, unstuck in your relationships, and even unstuck inside your mind. I am the absolute worst call for it when it comes to getting into these ruminative loops and just driving myself crazy. Starting point is 00:02:48 Maya is on the phone today for a first-date follow-up, and she's getting ghosted by a guy named Trevor, so in a few minutes we'll call him and see if he'll tell us why. he's ghosting her and maybe get her another date. But first, Maya, how long has it been since you heard from Trevor? Okay, that's quite a while. Yeah, well, so I tried reaching out, you know, a little. I texted once to make, oh, I had fun, because it was fun. And then I texted again and be like, how was your week?
Starting point is 00:03:16 And then I just on TikTok, that one that I thought he would like, because we already connected on there. But then I stopped because I didn't want to be that girl, you know. Okay, so three attempts. And no, nothing. Yeah, I don't know. After one day, that feels like a lot. But that's okay.
Starting point is 00:03:32 I don't think that's why you're getting ghosted, though. Because if he really liked you, it wouldn't matter. Right. That's why I'm so confused because it really was a great date. Tell us about it. What did you guys do? Well, they just, you know, did something low-key. We were like, let's, you know, go to a coffee, you know, a trendy coffee shop, I guess.
Starting point is 00:03:49 It ended up being, you know, one of those ones where it's like plants and coffee, but then there's just, like, one plant, and it's behind the counter, so you can't tell if it's fake, you know. whatever everything costs nine dollars but it's pretty good and they like lavender anyway um okay we yeah so we like you know got our drinks and ended up talking for a long time and um let's see he he got a cold brew i remember because he made this like little speech about how he drinks coffee for the vibes not the caffeine i was like i mean that's funny like okay sir i'm serious but But, you drink coffee for the vibes. So.
Starting point is 00:04:23 Yeah. What are coffee's vibes? Like, I mean, we were, we were just vibing. But anyway, so that's just an example, like, okay, it was fun. And then we walked around. I was a nearby, like, outdoor market, you know, like, sometimes it's a, what do you call it on weekends? Like a farmer's market, but there's just like little stuff.
Starting point is 00:04:40 Had some samples. I bought this really good honey for just to take home. Anyways, um, I love local honey. Anyways, yeah. We talk about travel and people watched and we just, we're clicking. You know, just like teasing me like in a flirty way, kind of felt like sarcastic. It just felt like rom-com meet cute. It was just one of those like perfect days, you know.
Starting point is 00:04:59 Okay. Like it was just great. And then we, you know, sat down on the bench towards the end of the day to finish our coffee and he put his arm around me. And it wasn't awkward. It was felt natural. And yeah, we did kiss on the bench. Aw, okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:05:13 You kissed on a bench and everything. You're still getting ghosted, huh? Yeah. What do you think went wrong? this sounds dumb so I'm like I feel dumb for even thinking that this is why he could be ghosting but I can't think of anything else I did spill spill my drink on him while I was laughing when we were sitting on the bench and it kind of went everywhere you know like there's just a little bit left but man that liquid just goes you know like on him on the ground on the bench so but he joked about it and stuff I thought that was fine but I was like well maybe he thinks I'm too much of a mess because of that I don't know no I don't know I don't know I don't I hope that's not why he ghosted you. How did he act after he spilled? So you said he was kind of joking about it, but like, did you kiss again after the bench?
Starting point is 00:05:56 Yeah, I think actually, I meant I still not before I kissed him. But, yeah, no, it didn't seem to, like, change anything. Okay. I also, like, talk about my mom a lot. I just remember that, like, bringing it up more than once. Not like a trauma way, but I was like, yeah, it depends how you talk about your mom, right? Like, you know. I mean, you're not supposed to bring up exes, but, like, it was just my mom.
Starting point is 00:06:17 That can't be weird. I talk about my mom all the time. I think that's probably fine. Like you said, though, just depends on how you're bringing it up. Maya is on the phone, and she's getting ghosted by a guy named Trevor for three weeks now. So we're about to get him on the phone and see if he'll tell us why he's ghosting her and maybe get her a second date. But before we call him, Maya, why don't you break down your date with Trevor again real quick? So it was great.
Starting point is 00:06:40 It really was a coffee date, day-time date. Low-key, we kissed. I spilled coffee. I was her back. Okay, well, are you ready for us to call him up? Yeah. Okay, here we go. I'm going to dial this phone over right now.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Hi, man, I speak to Trevor, please. Hey, Trevor, how are you? This is a radio show. It's called The Jubal Show. Hi, Trevor. I'm Nina. Hi, I'm Victoria. And my name's Jubal.
Starting point is 00:07:20 What's up? Okay. Is this real right now? Okay. Is anything really real, Trevor, if you think about it? I don't know. We can be philosophical, but anyway. I feel like he could have that conversation right now.
Starting point is 00:07:36 Have you ever listened to the Jeeble show before? Yeah, yeah, I have. Okay. Thank you. All right. Well, you might know or not know, I don't know, but we do a segment called the first date follow-up. That's where if you go on a date with somebody and you end up ghosting them,
Starting point is 00:07:52 they can email us to get you on the phone and ask why. So we got an email about you from somebody. Oh. Okay. Is it that? This is about my. It's probably about Maya, isn't it? It is about Maya.
Starting point is 00:08:08 You're correct, Trevor. Yeah, she emailed us and we talked to her a little bit about your date. It sounded fun. She sounded like she really liked you. Yeah. And she's confused. Do you mind telling us why you're ghosting her? Oh, well, I look.
Starting point is 00:08:24 First of all, like, I didn't hate the date. She was great. She's fun. She's cute. She just... honestly did like one little thing that kind of freaked me out what did she do well she she ordered the same drink as me like right after I ordered it and that freaked you out what's your drink again Trevor I like cold brew we went to a coffee shop
Starting point is 00:08:55 and I got a cold brew so you got just a straight up cold brew you're ghosting her because she got the same drink as you yeah but it's not just like that she ordered it like she said that sounds good i'll have that too like that's just intense to me um wait is this a joke is wait that i can't believe it that's why you go to me because i because i said that sounds good i'll have that too hey trevor that's my uh she's on the phone and she wants to talk to you obviously i didn't know she can hear me all right um uh yeah i needed to know and i just are you serious is that a joke that you're ghosting me over Why I ordered at a coffee shop?
Starting point is 00:09:36 Number A, I didn't. Number eight. Yeah, well, I also didn't know you were going to order the same exact drink as me. I mean. Well, why is that a thing? Wait, because I ordered a cold brew. Are you freaking kidding me? It's just in the past, like, I've dated girls that, like, I mean, one thing, like,
Starting point is 00:10:02 one minute you're ordering the same drink as me. like, if I ride motorcycles, you're riding motorcycles. If I do this thing, like, I've been through that. So you think it starts with the drink, ordering the same drink as you, and then they're wanting to do everything the same as you? Look, man, I've just, that's in my past. That's what I've experienced. It is one coffee, not a whole lifestyle change.
Starting point is 00:10:28 It's a principle. Okay, look, you put your arm around me, you kiss me, and then you disappeared over a drink order from the beginning of the date? When we say it like that, it sounds bad. Oh, thank you. I mean, I still stand by it. I really don't want somebody like copy my personality is what it is. Psychotic, right?
Starting point is 00:10:56 But I'm the psycho. You're the one who's trying to morph into me. Next thing I know you're going to be ordering the same thing at dinner or saying, like you're not hungry and eating all my food and absolutely not for that. I've had enough shape shippers in my life. I do not want another shapeshifter. Are you serious? Have you ever met a woman before?
Starting point is 00:11:18 Like you just... Yeah, I've met at least three of them. And then all of a sudden they were dudes and they were me. What? Start riding a motorcycle, you crazy person. You kiss me. Yeah, I did, but you know, you ordered the same drink as me. It's only a matter of time before.
Starting point is 00:11:41 I feel like I'm kissing myself. What? Are you okay? Okay, we'll have fun with that. Trevor, would you like another day with Maya? We'll pay for it. Honestly, I don't think so. I can go take myself out to dinner.
Starting point is 00:11:57 Oh, how nice. Well, that's good because if I did morph into you, I would become incredibly uninteresting, I wouldn't want that to happen to me. You know, don't hate the player, hate the game. If you really want to be mad at someone, be mad at Maddie. Maddie? What?
Starting point is 00:12:15 Maddie. Maddie. The last girl copied my drink order. He made great for her. Yeah, I'm wise to that now. He's shapeshifter. Okay. Jubel's first date follow-up.
