Hey, everyone.
It's Katie Couric.
Well, the election is in the homestretch, right in time for a new season of
my podcast, Next Question. I'm bringing in some FOKs, friends of Katie's, to help me out, like
Ezra Klein, Jen Psaki, Astead Herndon. But we're also going to have some fun, thanks to some of my
friends like Samantha Bee and Charlemagne the God. We're going to take some viewer questions as well.
I mean, isn't that what democracy is all about?

The Jubal Show on demand.
First date follow-up.
Devin is on the phone today for a first date follow-up,
and he's not getting a call back from Wendy's.
Wendy's?
Or Wendy.
I think her name is just Wendy.
I don't think it's all of Wendy's,
but he's not getting a call back from Wendy,
who he went on a date with, and he doesn't know why.
We're going to see if we can help him out right now.
First of all, Devin, before we ask you about your date,
is this the Wendy that is like the face of Wendy's,
or a different person named Wendy that you went
out with? Uh, this is a different person. Yeah. Okay, cool. I wasn't sure. You never know.
All right. So, uh, how long has it been since you talked, since you last talked to Wendy?
Uh, I spoke to her, I'd say like about a week. It's come up on a week now.
A week. Okay. And how many times have you reached out to her in that week i reached out about two times i'm contemplating a third all right i would
say don't do the third yet no we'll be the third we were the third okay so tell us about your date
with wendy yeah so um she seemed really cool over text you know we did the whole app thing and so i was like
great so we she decided we could meet up and i was like awesome i know a great uh hiking trail
that we could go to that's not far from us so i picked her up and we went over to you know the
place to start the hike essentially and when we got there it turned out that the, for whatever reason, the trail was closed that day.
Oh.
Yeah.
Weird.
Yeah.
So, and I talked to, I felt bad because I'm like, I talked this hiking trail up like a
lot.
Like, I'm like, you're going to, you're not going to see better views anywhere.
And then it's like, well, we have a view of a gate essentially.
So what do you do?
I mean, what do you do in that moment though?
That was your whole date, right?
It was to go hiking.
That was what you had planned.
Yeah. I was,, I got really nervous.
I was like, I don't know what to do.
But then we were just talking, and then I'm like, wait a minute.
We could make this into like we just brought food, like sandwiches.
And so we just decided we could just get to know each other in my car,
and we just talked.
We actually had a really good conversation.
When you say get to know each other, oh, you mean just eat the sandwiches and stuff. I was good when you say get to know each other oh you mean just eat the sandwiches and stuff i was like you said get to know each other
in your car i was like whoa that got really intense on a first date yeah the first date so
i tried to yeah i tried to be a gentleman i guess and um and yeah we just talked it was really nice
and we ate and it actually like turned out to be well at least to me i thought it was like a really
good first date well why do you think that you're not getting a call back then see i've just been rattling my
brain about it like what what could i've done but if i were to think of something it's probably
because like i did talk about this hike and then the hike did not happen so i'm right i'm like this
does she think that i'm just really bad at planning or like I just don't know hiking trails from closed hiking trails?
I don't know.
So I'm sure maybe that wasn't the best first impression, I guess.
But aside from that, I'm not really sure.
Well, I guess you could have known it was closed if you like looked up the hike beforehand.
So what hike is closed?
Why didn't you choose another hike?
Like, aren't there like plenty of hikes out there?
There's only one hike in town.
I mean, I think I just, like, I wasn't thinking, honestly.
Like, I was totally gung-ho thinking this hike is going to seal the deal.
That's it.
And then when it didn't, I was like, what do I do?
And going on another hike was not the idea, clearly, I guess.
I probably would have done the same thing.
Producer Bennett brings up a very good point.
You could go, well, let's just see if there's another hike around that is open.
But I would probably panic like you and be like,
well, now all we've got to do is eat in the car.
Yeah, you get it.
Thank you, thank you, you get it.
But I would also, if I wasn't getting a call back, go,
oh, I probably could have looked around for another hike,
and maybe she didn't like that.
I mean, did she seem like she was having fun in the car, though?
Like, you were?
I mean, she seemed, like, very conversational, so I thought so.
Again, I thought we were vibing pretty well.
It felt like good chemistry, given the conversation.
So I thought I would maybe get, like, a text back or something at this point.
Okay, and how did it end?
Did you get a kiss?
So I took her back to her place and then I just felt like, I guess like terrible from
what had happened earlier.
I did a hug.
I didn't go into the kiss.
I wasn't really reading that.
So I was just like, I'll just hug her.
And then I just hugged her and that was it.
Okay.
Well, straight up ghosted.
Yep.
We'll see if we can figure it out for you.
We'll play a song, come back and then call Wendy and see if we can find out why she's
not calling you back and get you another date, okay?
Awesome.
Thank you, guys.
All right.
We'll do it next.
Just joining us, Devin is on the phone and he wants to call Wendy today because Wendy
is ghosting him after they went out on a hiking date, except they didn't hike.
He met her online.
They were supposed to go on this hike.
They got there.
It was closed and so and so he decided so they decided to just eat in his car the stuff
that the food that they brought with them yeah sandwiches that they brought with them in his car
that was pretty much the date he dropped her off he thinks he's not getting a call back because
maybe it was a bad look that the place he took her was closed and then he didn't think of another
option other than eating in the car.
Sandwiches.
But who knows?
It could be something else.
So we're going to call her right now.
Do the sandwiches.
Anything else you want to say before we make our phone call to Wendy, Devin?
No, I think you recapped that pretty well.
All right.
Well, here we go.
We'll see if we can.
We'll see why she's not calling you back
and if we can get another date. hello hi may i speak to wendy please this is she who's this thank you for asking this is jubile
from a radio show called the jubile show and this is alex from a show called the radio show called
the jubile show and this is bennett this is a producer on a radio show called The Jubal Show. And this is Bennett. This is a producer on a radio show called The Jubal Show.
And we're calling you because we do a segment on our show called The First Date Follow-Up.
Do you know what that is?
I mean, I understand what it sounds like.
What does it sound like to you?
A first date follow-up.
It's a segment where if you go out on a first date with someone
and they end up getting ghosted,
they can email us to get you on the phone and ask what happened.
And so that's why we're calling you today
because you recently went out with a dude named Devin
for a hike that never happened.
Uh-huh.
And now you're not calling him back and he wants to know why.
Oh, my God.
He's not on the line, right? You're not calling him back and he wants to know why. Oh my God. Um,
he's not on the line,
right?
Well,
we just want to know.
I mean,
um,
uh, we're just,
we're wondering if you could tell us what,
what happened on our date.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We didn't really do anything on the date.
I,
we do.
We sat in his car and we ate food sandwiches and yeah we had
sandwiches in his car okay um where there was no view he promised me these like amazing views
and we got there and the place was totally closed which could have been avoided with a simple phone
call to like check in and see if the place was open but it's a hike though
you go check in with you don't think that you don't think that it's going to be closed i mean
some do close i mean that's fair i guess like i was a little irritated about it but you know he
kind of pitched this idea of like you know we'll sit in the car and we'll eat these sandwiches and
we can get to know one another and at first when he said that i
was like oh that's kind of cute it kind of i don't know like it reminds me of a 90s movie
kind of romantic thing and then we sat in his car was super hot his interior is black he didn't turn
on the car i mean he turned on the car for like a little bit of music but not dc he opened the
windows and i was roasting in there the food when, when he ate, like, went everywhere.
He's like a really messy eater.
And I'm completely grossed out by stuff like that.
Like, he had food in his teeth.
He had food all around his lap.
The sandwich.
Like, it was the sandwich.
I was blown away at the amount of food on his person instead of his person.
Are you serious?
That is gross.
Okay, I couldn't help it.
Okay, the bread was soft.
Oh, my God.
I'm sorry.
That's all right, Dad.
We're a little too early, but that happens sometimes when it comes to dating.
Wendy, on the phone right there, the person that said something about soft bread,
that is Devin.
He's actually on the phone listening. I don't know if you noticed
how I evaded your question earlier when you asked if he
was on the phone. I didn't answer you because I didn't want to lie to you.
Yes, he is.
Hi, Devin.
Hey, Wendy. Good to hear
from you. I think that's a little
unfair. I mean, because, you know,
the sandwiches have been sitting in like that,
you know, olive oil for a while. The bread
was soft, okay? That's why it was messy, because it was very
soft bread, and it was kind of drenched
in the oil, okay? So that's not really fair.
I don't think. He is online. Tell me
in devil. I mean, if bread is soft like that, it does
get stuck in your teeth. You said it was all in his teeth. Could it
have just been the soft bread?
I was all over him.
Well, I mean, i don't remember that but
like what i mean was that it was it because because of that like i'm sorry devon i i know
it sounds like insane but i just like i can't be around people that eat like that it just really
is a turnoff okay but like it wasn't me though it was the bread was was soft if we had not soft
bread it wouldn't have been a mess.
It wasn't because the bread was soft.
It's just that you're kind of a sloppy eater.
So, like, I went soft because I wasn't really into what you were doing.
Okay, look.
Normally, when you eat sandwiches, the bread doesn't get your teeth because it's not soft.
But in this case, the bread was very soft, and was just getting in my teeth and I normally don't eat.
I'm not a slob when I eat, okay? But I also don't usually eat soft bread, all right? So that's just
the problem here is the bread was soft. Kevin, I know how sandwiches work. I know how sandwiches
work. Okay, but like Wendy, you know how sandwiches can get. Like when the bread is soft,
it can just get in your teeth.
Like, I'm sure that's happened to you before, right?
Like, you get that, right?
That has literally never happened to me.
I've never had a problem eating a sandwich ever.
And I've never had someone not call me because of the way that I eat.
Okay, f*** you.
No, no, no, you're just lying right now, all right?
You have totally had soft bread in your teeth no. You're just lying right now, all right? You have totally had soft bread in your teeth before.
You're just lying right now.
Devin, if you're saying the bread was soft and I ate the same bread and sandwich that you ate
and didn't leave an entire mess all over my mouth and my person.
So clearly there's a disconnect.
It's not about the bread.
It's not about the bread, Devin.
It's not about the bread. It's about you. bread, Devin. It's not about the bread.
It's about you.
And I don't want to go out with you again.
Well, hold on.
Don't go too quick on that.
I want to ask you, Wendy,
would you like to go out with Devin again
on another date?
We'll pay for it.
Yeah, so you go ahead of yourself.
No, I do not.
I do not.
You know what?
You can send me on my own
and I can have a hard sandwich by myself.
That sounds yummy.
Well, I know another really good restaurant, and I will call them to make sure they're open.
I think you'd have a really good time.
Yeah, and how's their bread?
You know, I'm sure it's on the harder side, so that's good news.
It's hard.
Okay, Wendy.
I think I just started switching to salads
actually.
Would you be willing to go on another date
with Devin if we make sure
that there's some hard bread there?
You guys, no.
I'm sorry.
Sorry, Devin.
No, it's fine. I honestly
don't even want to go out with her at this point anyways.
I'm going to find someone who actually appreciates what I did and what I tried to do at least.
So thanks anyways, guys.
Good luck to you.
And I'll find somebody who doesn't eat like a slob.
It was soft bread.
