Starting point is 00:00:52 You're richer than you think. Live from New York, it's a show that needs to focus on straightforward analysis. Not a lot of hijinks. not a lot of musical bits. We're not here to do a comedy show. We're here to do sports. Comedy is... Today's show up the dial.
Starting point is 00:01:10 No teasing. I just don't think it's good for the show for our careers. Well, disagree. Listen, we tried and failed to win an Emmy. Today's show, I think we're trying maybe just as lack of successfully
Starting point is 00:01:24 to win a Grammy. Today's show is going to be very musical. I have a feeling. I have no idea. I think we're going to have it. I'm here. All different. You have no.
Starting point is 00:01:33 I assume some of the music's yours, bro. Maybe I remember. No. We'll see. First hour, first things first. Today, a seven second comeback in Rio, how the Cowboys blew the game in Brazil. Meanwhile, Josh Allen says, you know, the bills didn't deserve to win. They did.
Starting point is 00:01:51 And in the process, did they end the Chargers season? And finally, oh, boy. It's a time to panic about Drake May. There are some numbers that say yes. Oh, wow. Travis Hunter, power of the bud list. That was great, true. I kind of took credit for that.
Starting point is 00:02:12 You put him more, yeah. You win against your guys. Almost like a win for me there. How did the ball just fall out of his hand? Well, he's playing with a bloody ball. Well, he's squeezing it too tight. That's true. He wants to, you know, like when you're on the golf course.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Exactly. And it's also covered with blood. You squeeze it so hard. Did you hear Grable say that? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Okay, okay, I was going to say it. I was like, you and Brable are like mine.
Starting point is 00:02:36 That's the exact analogy Brable. I was playing off of that. And it was covered in blood. Also, maybe not that good. The ball? The ball was covered in blood. No, it wasn't covered. The ball is a blood and the sinner's hand was bleeding.
Starting point is 00:02:50 And Drake in his. It was like a massacre. It was just, it was like Friday to 13th. That might be an explanation. That's what Drake said. Okay. Drake said there was a little blood on the problem. Not a little blood.
Starting point is 00:03:01 He says pouring blood. There was some blood. maybe some tears. It had to be a lot. It better have been a lot. It was a tremendous amount of blood. Okay. First of all right, we're starting.
Starting point is 00:03:12 In Rio, Lamar gets the ball with seven seconds left and with one pass, sets up a game winning field goal from Tyler Loop. It's the fastest game winning drive ever from a kickoff. And just the final note after a great game from Lamar. Here he is after the game. Last week, we didn't, you know, finish the game how we wanted to. You know, we had a lot of self-deflict and wounds. But today we had the same thing.
Starting point is 00:03:38 But today we conquer. Shout out to loop, man. With that field, real talk, real talk. Shout out to loop, man, because I know you've been going through a lot of adversity as well, you know, but we all won. You know, it's one of court. We're moving on one accord, bro. Shout out to you. Shout out the special team, defense, offense.
Starting point is 00:03:51 We batted. We had the center go down. We had all this, all this adversity going on, y'all, boys. And we conquer. This is the start of the season right here. It came down to the last second. So did you like what you saw from the Ravens? I mean, I should, right?
Starting point is 00:04:10 But am I wearing a robe? Not yet, no. No. Am I wearing sunglasses? No. No, you are wearing a purple tie. Oh, that's just Christine threw this together. Are my Jordan-clad feet laid up on the table while I eat a sandwich,
Starting point is 00:04:29 chips and a soda. No, I noticed your Jordan-clad feet weren't on the table. No, they are not because I didn't like what I saw. Because what I saw, Nick, I mean, y'all, y'all laughing. I agree. I agree. This is my take. Last second.
Starting point is 00:04:47 Really, the Cowboys blew it. Yeah. Well, I'm not saying all that, but what I saw was a team that squeaked. Yes. By the one and two Dallas Cowboys. by the hair on their chin. They're one and one at the third. Yeah, one and two now.
Starting point is 00:05:03 All right. What I saw was a team that needed the Cowboys to mismanage the last 40 seconds or so, like a Pop Warner team. Yes. What I saw was a team that needed Dak Prescott to throw the ball away prematurely and also had a open man. Fired it to George Pickens in the corner of the end zone. All right?
Starting point is 00:05:29 So that's what I saw. So, no, I'm not happy about that. I'm excited. Jumping for joy. Why? Why? Tell me. For all the reasons.
Starting point is 00:05:52 I am jumping for, in fact, you know what? The box. Oh, the box. And a shovel. What's the shovel? I'll get to the shuffle. What? The shovel is very important.
Starting point is 00:06:05 But let me see what's in the, yeah, okay. Yeah. That's right. That's right. And the robe, of course. Yes. Oh, yeah. I'm just going fling it on.
Starting point is 00:06:17 I'm, you know, no problem. And the shovel, you guys are wondering what the shovel is for. Well, you need a shovel when you bury things. And what the Ravens did in the span of seven seconds. Seven seconds. Yeah. Yeah. They buried some narratives, Nick, right?
Starting point is 00:06:42 They exercised some demons. First, Tyler Loop, as Lamar said, this kid missed a 44-yard field goal last year that would have put them in the playoffs. A gimmie by today's standards. And he had to live with that all summer. And yesterday, he showed some mental toughness by burying that narrative with that 56-yarder. Lamar Jackson, 13 seconds, that's old news.
Starting point is 00:07:14 That's paste. The new standard is seven seconds. That's what you need. Now, if there's seven seconds left, it ain't over. And Lamar's not supposed to be clutch and all that. This was actually his first game-winning drive of his career that started with a minute or less left on the clock.
Starting point is 00:07:34 Oh, I didn't know that. So he exercised some demons. He buried some narratives, and of course, the Ravens overall. You can't hold a fourth quarter league. And many of them, include Lamar, commented on that. So it was on their minds. And they were, looked like they were going to blow it again. And they go ahead and win.
Starting point is 00:07:54 And that is why they are celebrating. I mean, they are celebrating. Because demons have been exercised. Narratives have been buried. So they had to give some praise. They had to dance. And so like Lamar said, Nick, the narratives have been buried. The season starts now.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Wow. And I'm also kicking up the feet. Jordan clad. Jordan clad feet. All right. So can I listen. Great performance as always. From Brew or the Ravens?
Starting point is 00:08:28 From Brew. Gotcha. More than the Ravens. Because, again, not to be in reruns, but to remind the audience, I really believe in I picked the Ravens be the number one seed. I was debating to the last, to the final day of predictions week, whether I was going to go with Patrick or Lamar for League MVP, liked the Jesse Minter hire.
Starting point is 00:08:49 I was very optimistic about the Ravens for this year's regular season at the very least. Yes. But everything you said in the beginning as you're set up for your Oscar-worthy misdirection is how I actually feel. That was just. I know, but it's how I actually feel. that if not for some, and we're going to get to it, truly inept Cowboys' mismanagement, this would have been consecutive blown late second half, 11-point leads for Baltimore
Starting point is 00:09:25 when that has been the bugaboo, playoff disappointment, and losing games they had no business losing are the negative keystones of the Lamar era. There's a bunch of positive keystones, obviously, of it, but those two things. And I didn't, I think the Ravens deserve massive credit for, well, Lamar
Starting point is 00:09:48 and Zayflowers and Tyler Loop deserve massive credit for that final seven seconds. But everything that led up to it in the final 90 seconds, I felt was more about cowboys mismanagement than Ravens forcing them into it. Now, maybe it's possible
Starting point is 00:10:04 they did just need to exercise those demons now that they've done it we don't know what road they would have traveled down now they're going to travel down a different one but a lot of the reasons they lost the Saints game showed up here a lot of the concerns about the Ravens' ability
Starting point is 00:10:22 to close games when they are the better team when they are outplaying the opponent showed up here and so I you should feel great you got the win didn't fall to one and two, but I am not as convinced as brew, KW,
Starting point is 00:10:39 that this is buried, that now they won't be a team that just gives up big leads because it felt like they were dying to do it yesterday and Dallas wouldn't let them. One thing you didn't mention that I did really like, Lamar was using his legs
Starting point is 00:10:54 more. I feel like I've seen him use in a couple years. They probably don't win that game. No, because prior to that past his eight flowers, he had thrown for like 150 yards. Like he wasn't, he was having an efficient game, but not a prolific game. They weren't throwing a lot. They weren't throwing a lot, but Lamar was very dangerous with his legs.
Starting point is 00:11:11 I hope he keeps it up because you see he doesn't run like he used to, meaning he's not running to break it. Like he's not running to score. No. He's just running to get his yardage and, you know. So 50 yards for Lamar on the ground. Here says he, look, he had 15 completions for 186 yards, but did give him a passer reading of almost. almost 137, Brew. Look at this stat.
Starting point is 00:11:37 Again, this is a passer rating that you're always on about how good of a passer he is. Again, not, it's not throwing the ball 50 times. Low volume, high efficiency. 20. Those guys combined. Alan Mahomes and Burrow combined have 21 games of a passer rating at 135 or more. And Lamar has 22, six most of all time. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:57 It's pretty good. I mean, he's the leader right now all time. In career passer rating. Pretty will pass over takes. Yeah. But yeah, I mean, they don't throw it a lot. What do you throw? How many times?
Starting point is 00:12:07 20 times. Yeah. So, but he is efficient. Ravens host the Titans next week, so that's nice. Maybe Cam Ward bounced back, but nope. I don't know. Nope. On the cowboy side of things, we can focus on the last drive.
Starting point is 00:12:19 Dack throws away a chance to win. The Cowboys ignore the clock, settle for a field goal and set themselves up for a quick defeat. Here's Dak. Remember, Gotti was a big thing, the greatest offense ever. And Coach Schoenheimer taking a page. taking a page out of Professor Brassard's book. A lot of work for you here, Brew. Big listen.
Starting point is 00:12:38 Frustrated as hell, excuse me. Embarrassed, we call ourselves the best offense, you know, Gotti, and we get down in the one-yard line and don't put it in. Yeah, it just sucks. Hell was you great here, Blake all it. We lost. Give it an F. Wow.
Starting point is 00:12:55 Okay. Wow. Drew, Coach Sean Hammer gave it an F. What are you giving the Cowboys performance? Well, look, maybe I'm overestimating the Ravens, but the Cowboys weren't supposed to win this game. We know they weren't favored. And them being in the hunt, having a chance to win it,
Starting point is 00:13:17 I know that, I'm glad Dak and Schottenheimer are not satisfied and don't want a moral victory. But they obviously made some mistakes that we talked about earlier. Okay, they blew some things. But overall, I did see improvement. The offense we know is good. The offense does score, again, 31 points. You should be able to win with that.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Yeah. All right. They did go up against a great offense. With, it's only two games. But when the Ravens are whole with Zay Flowers, they're averaging 37. Yeah. You know, so it's a high-powered offense. And I thought, I saw defensive improvement.
Starting point is 00:13:58 They held Derek Henry to 89 yards when I think 26 carries. It was less than four yards a carry. They held him on fourth and one in the first quarter, stuffed him, and then, of course, in the fourth quarter, stuffed him at the goal line. You know, I mean, their defense, and that was the rookie of Barham linebacker. I thought he played really. Yeah, I mean, it's almost like they discovered him. So I just, I know they made a ton of mistakes at the end of the game.
Starting point is 00:14:26 But I thought defensively there were some signs that, okay, they're not there for sure and even that last seven seconds, the way they covered that was kind of a mess. It doesn't hurt you if they make a 20-yard completion. So why are you worried about that? You just had to stop them from getting in field goal range. And so they made some mistakes,
Starting point is 00:14:47 but I'm just saying when I look at the defense, I saw Quinn and Williams in the front four, I thought was much better. So I just think that they showed some signs. So what I gave them, was a G for growing pains. Oh, growing pains. We want for some growing pains.
Starting point is 00:15:09 G game. G game. G game. The cowboys went down to Rio. The game was so close. G game. G game. The defense improved their tune better than buzz.
Starting point is 00:15:22 A G game. Shine and giving an effort for me. I'm going to give it a G. G game. A G game. was a win, a moral victory. G game. It wasn't just a good game.
Starting point is 00:15:39 It was a great game, even though the growing pains, I give it a G game. A G game, a G game, a G game, a G game, a G game, a G game, G game, G game, G game, G game. G game, G game. G game. That, wow. G game. G game. G game.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Wow. He just I like that. He just gave me the gold. Yeah. I mean, that was amazing. That,
Starting point is 00:16:15 that performance by them Wow. Salvaged what I say, and I say this with love and respect. Man. Might be who. Brew's cowboy analysis
Starting point is 00:16:27 that I disagree the most with in our entire time working together. I think that was such a catastrophic failure by Schottenheimer and Dack in the final 70 seconds of this game that any other moral victory, good feelings, positive vibes
Starting point is 00:16:47 get eliminated. The way they lost simply can't happen and is unacceptable. So you think they, you sound like you think this is going to linger. No, I think it is, I now, I have very few scarlet letters that I will assign to people.
Starting point is 00:17:10 Read a book about it once. It doesn't seem like good. What book? Great question. I can't remember. Atlas Shrug. And I now, Brian Schottinheimer now has bad game manager assigned to him. And Dak Prescott's in-game IQ as far as.
Starting point is 00:17:35 situational football took a huge hit. They say, you know, pictures. And that's been kind of on his shoulder. Correct. And usually we show video. It's TV show. I want to show pictures. Oh.
Starting point is 00:17:50 So here is a moment in time for the Dallas Cowboys. Take everything in on the screen. There is a minute nine left. They have one timeout. They are in, I know Aubrey had missed a kick. They are in chip. for him field goal range. It's the 29-yard line.
Starting point is 00:18:11 After this play, Dax scrambles on this play. Show me the next moment right before the Ravens called timeout. There's 28 seconds left. They allowed 41, Dack, and this was Dack. They were at the line at 50. And Dax seemed convinced he needed to audible into the perfect play and then seem to, when the Ravens called time out, be clapping saying, yeah, you need to call time out.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Yeah, I didn't understand his thrill of that. My read of it was he was diagnosing that he could get the Cowboys into a play. The Ravens couldn't defend. And that's what he was trying to do. What he wasn't diagnosing in real time was the clock stops being our friend. And the Ravens, if we get him in that spot, can't just call time. time out. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:05 So that screenshot one to screenshot two can't happen. And now screenshot three. If I tell you the Dallas Cowboys did not turn the ball over and lost this game in regulation, you have to say impossible. Yeah, so it's first and goal with 23 seconds. First and goal, 23 seconds left. They still have a time out. They're on the two.
Starting point is 00:19:29 They lost in regulation. They didn't turn it over. That's wholly unacceptable. And they had the false start, which moved them back five yards. They had the false start after this play. Right, right, right, right. Right, right. After that.
Starting point is 00:19:43 But what I'm saying, see, they should not have been at the goal. Don't you, that was a horrific call. I agree that was a horrific call. Should have been offensive passing. Sure. But given the situation that they found themselves in. And then a little more nuanced, but not nuanced. You're one of the highest paid players in the history of the NFL.
Starting point is 00:20:04 You've got to get this right. First of all, DAC snap-calling time-out at 14 seconds left. At that point, when it's going to be fourth down, or when it's going to be third down, you don't have to snap-call timeout. So that's first issue. Second issue, Brandon Aubrey, who's supposed to be one of the best kickers in the league, and historically is either he wasn't coached up not to kick it through the best. back of the end zone or he failed on that.
Starting point is 00:20:34 But him kicking it through the back of the end zone, Brew, you mentioned 13 seconds. 13 seconds at least occurred when you got the ball in the 20. Right. This is on the 35. Can I read you something? Yeah. I think that's fascinating. It's unacceptable.
Starting point is 00:20:49 So you think he should just kicked it in a place. He kicks it in bounds. The only way you lose is you allow a cap or time. Let me read this to you, Brue, because this is from the athletic, from it like an anonymous coach. Right. The interesting thing is who pushed for the touchback, the coach said. Sometimes the special teams coach doesn't want to be on the hook for giving up a long
Starting point is 00:21:06 return. You touch it back. You have to play the correct defense. You don't touch it back. What would Baltimore do? Hope for a hell, Mary. So I wonder if there is some dysfunction in who's making the call. Well, I think, remember, Aubrey kicked it out of bounds twice. So I think he was nervous. Well, I think they might have been, they might have been worried. We give them, now granted, they got it at the 35. You would have got it at the 40 if he kicked it out of bounds again. But I think they were concerned about him kicking it out of bounds. Or maybe he was. Because here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:21:35 It was a great play by, and I'm mentioning that Dak had pickings open. Yeah. For the game winner, if we show that. Yeah, let's show that. And then Jack's like, you know, I'm supposed to throw it away. Yeah. With 14 seconds left. He was already like determined.
Starting point is 00:21:51 Not even if you were going to throw it away. Yeah, he threw it too. They ran this entire sequence from the moment Dak scrambled and they let 30 seconds roll roll off like they were down two. They were in the entire sequence, like, who cares about a touchdown, a field goal is good enough. That's right. And kicking it through the end zone like they did,
Starting point is 00:22:08 I'm not taking anything away from Lamar and say. But at the 35 with one time out, it doesn't take the greatest play of the week and to get the field goal range. It was just, what, 27 yards? Right. It just takes a good chunk play and you're in field goal range. It's just an unacceptable way to use. But here's the thing, and I will say,
Starting point is 00:22:28 if they had kicked it to the deep man on the kickoff and you don't see many runbacks anymore but if he runs it back then now today everybody's saying man just kick it out of the end zone maybe but there's how many kick return touchdowns have there
Starting point is 00:22:45 been literally this season one I think there's been one don't see me as many he can't but you don't have time you would have had time yeah it would have been 15 seconds left everything's different Seven seconds, you would have to score a touchdown. I think they also thought, I think they felt like overtime was inevitable. Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:05 Like the way they, I actually thought I was surprised when Lamar dropped back to throw. I thought Lamar was going to take it. Oh, he's not going to risk. No, they have a time out. They can. I thought it was terrible. Cowboys at Texans next week, head to Denver. Rams up three with a minute left.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Bo Nix out of the pocket, throws up a prayer, which is answered when the official calls pass interference on Josh Wallace. Broncos go on to win. Here's Sean McVeigh on what he thought of the call. Yeah, you know what? I'll look at it. It looked like it was a good competitive play from my vantage point, but we'll go back and look at it and we'll see what they say.
Starting point is 00:23:42 Diplomatic answer. Did the Rams get robbed, bro? Well, I do think that was an interception. Now, the defender did, there was contact, but, you know, the rule is if you hinder the receiver from catching the ball. And the receiver grabbed him. Yeah, yeah. I do think it was a bad call, which would have made it an interception,
Starting point is 00:24:02 and probably the Rams going to win the game. But I don't really want to hear that from the Rams because you gave up 30. 30 second half points to a team whose offense is not that great. We know they rally and this is what they've done under Bo Nix. But they had scored 30 points in their two previous games combined. And you gave up 30 and a half with Aaron Donald, Trent McDuffie, and the rest of these guys on the field. So I get this was a bad call.
Starting point is 00:24:35 But the way they collapsed and gave up the points on defense, and then Stafford, of course, through the pick six, I just don't think they play like they deserved to win. Listen, we don't blame the refs on this show, and I'm not going to break from that. I will say as a football fan, I hate two things very specifically about. One is one guy's trying to make a play and the other guy's acting and flopping.
Starting point is 00:25:00 And we're rewarding the acting and flopping. Correct. The other one is the referee that can see it all doesn't throw a flag and then didn't have the gumption to tell the guy who threw the flag, you're wrong, pick it up. That's true. Which he had the right here. They had a little conference. So I, so both of those things, I just viscerally hated.
Starting point is 00:25:20 But more than anything, gives me an opportunity to hop on one of my big. favorite hobby horses, which is America. And you saw it a little bit this week as well. And it's like, oh, my God, the penalty that we all hate, but that's been called for five years of the guy falling on the quarterback. It helped the Chiefs, and it's the Chiefs derangement stuff. Over the last three years, when folks have been convinced that there is some grand conspiracy to help my team with the officiating,
Starting point is 00:25:53 that focus should have been on we need to get better at officiating because as I was saying all along if you have a stand-alone primetime game that is close you are a coin flip whether or not a topic like this is going to be an RA block every close primetime game every other one there is a what about this disastrously blown call at the end or questionable or missed call and people assign malice when it's incompetence. And I do think they need to take a hard look at how you can better officiate the highest leverage spots because if you are the Rams, yes, you did all those things wrong,
Starting point is 00:26:40 but your guy made a great play at the end that won you the game. The game is over your two and one, the Broncos are one and two, and one ref saw that the guy made a great play, kept his flag in his pocket, and the other ref got tricked by acting, which we don't like in the other. But you're also no fan of replay, so what do you want to do? I think asking the officials to be better at their job is an okay thing to do.
Starting point is 00:27:09 KW? Hey, please be better at your job. No, I think there's a, look, it's a tough job. They're going to make mistakes. I understand it's a, I mean, I don't mean to annoy you. No, but I mean, I don't. I don't think that's an actual solution asking people to be better at their job. No, I, so I disagree.
Starting point is 00:27:24 I think that, I think the athletes over my lifetime have gotten better. I think that, I think that if you incentivize and prioritize and compensate officials in a way different than our pro sports leagues do, and where the cream rises to the top rather than seniority and longevity and things like that, I think you would have better results. I think we see that with. Respectfully, that's a different. That's like an institutional thing. Yeah, well, I know we're late.
Starting point is 00:27:53 I was just trying to give the short-hand version of it. And you still would have human errors. Of course you would have human errors. We'd be talking more about the Ravens, that situation in the Ravens game had they lost. Correct. You know, that's kind of my point. Like if there's a lot of eyes on a game and it's a close game, there's going to be an officiating day. Mike Vrable trying to pep Drake May up.
Starting point is 00:28:12 Is he crying? He's not crying. Are we sure? It's, look at the sun is it. Is he crying? The sun is in his eyes. That's next one. We're shocked sports channel on SiriusXM.

Drake May played the worst game of his life. How bad, Wilds? Well, thanks for asking. I don't know it was the worst game this year. It was.
Starting point is 00:29:18 He dropped the ball because it had blood on it, covered in blood. Then he threw a fadeaway pick to Travis Hunter, who's not on his team. He almost took a safety no one's talking about. Then he threw another pick before being pulled and Tommy DeVito came in. Here's Mike Vrable on what's leading to Drake's wacky decisions. When Greg and I go golfing, we really want to make a good score, right? Sometimes we're so focused on it that we try to choke the life out of the golf club. and we're squeezing it so damn tight
Starting point is 00:29:49 that the ball has no choice but to go sideways. And we need to stop trying to choke the life out of every single play. That ball that he's trying to throw to Chisholm in the end zone. He just believes, he believes that he's going to be able to... I don't know. You'd have to ask him what he believes. I'm saying, like, you guys ask me a question about what he believes. I know.
Starting point is 00:30:08 Okay, so... Well, then ask me what my assessment is. What's your assessment of it? That it's a terrible decision. I kind of like it. All right. Doug Claussen writing on Twitter. one metric. This is the biggest 180 by any quarterback this century. Drake May ranks 29th in EPA
Starting point is 00:30:25 per dropback after leading the NFL last season. No quarterback on record has ever gone from one to 29. Data exists since 2000. Greg Jennings is here. Nick Wright is wearing a Jags outfit. We understand. We get it, but we'll start with Drew. Brew's been the man of the hour. Brew, can you give me your assessment on what's wrong with Drake May? Well, Every week. Every week. Yes, we get it.
Starting point is 00:31:16 You can cut it. Chris, it's enough. All right, we got it. I'm not long for this bit. I did bring some reading material. Okay, look. What is this? This is a menu of explanations slash excuses.
Starting point is 00:31:38 for Drake May. It's like an a la carte menu, okay? You can choose one from every category. Greg, I have one for you. Situational, mental, and physical. So I can run through a few of them, and you guys can just choose to save you a lot of time and effort on what's wrong.
Starting point is 00:32:00 Situational, okay? Harder schedule. Okay, it's not... Well, just say if we agree, just keep going. You played the JV schedule last. The defense has figured Drake May out. Yes. Romeo Dobbs and A.J. Brown is not playing our downgrade from K. Sean Booty and stuff on digs.
Starting point is 00:32:17 Greg, are you participating? Yeah. All right. Lackluster play calls. Nah, same play calls. Is Josh. Greg, lackluster play calls? No.
Starting point is 00:32:26 Oh, come on. Offseason distractions. Let's table that one. O-line pressure, anybody? I think the O-line's better. Yeah, but he's clearly feeling something. Okay. Mental.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Now, do you choose one from mental. clock sped up. Yes. Yeah. This is an odd one. Not enough confidence. Absolutely. I don't know if he has any.
Starting point is 00:32:47 All right. Also, too much confidence. No, that's not it at all. I know you wish it was good. Just bad decisions? Yes. That too. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:55 Super Bowl hangover. No. No. Okay, physical. Blood on the football. No. Dead blood on. Greg, Greg. It was like Friday the 13th.
Starting point is 00:33:04 Yeah, I hope it never rained. Yeah. Right. Hey, his shoulder, you see, I don't know if you guys caught the press. His shoulder is more hurt than he lets on. I know. I got my eyes on it. Yeah, no, we're not buying it.
Starting point is 00:33:15 Bonus. Last year was like that lady on the plane. That wasn't real. Yeah, maybe. That's a maybe. I'm not ready to say yes. And finally, this is just for dessert. Nobody cares about it.
Starting point is 00:33:26 And Michael May's chocolate chip cookies. Bake miss is in jeopardy. So there you go. There are all the excuses. I haven't seen any other ones. You can choose which. So. Can I go here?
Starting point is 00:33:38 Because here's the thing. It's not a stretch to say he's been the worst quarterback in the NFL this year. Now, Cam Ward's like, hey, guys. No, he's been the worst. I want him to be the worst. I ever had a 25 passer rating yesterday. But here's his ranks. And it's, you know, so again, the completion percentage is still okay, KDA.
Starting point is 00:34:02 That counts only to Patriots? The touchdown and turnover and passer rating. great. The, you know, wow, does skip the Super Bowl losers one. It's a graphic with him at Rex Grossman. It doesn't matter. Your guy's offense is the most inept offense in the league.
Starting point is 00:34:21 Yeah, that looks about right. And Greg, here's where, if I were KW, I'd get a little concern. You got to score two offensive touchdowns this year. Dolphin scored three. They scored two yesterday on the Chiefs. Wait, not the Chiefs yet. The couple blind reveals for you. Oh, we get it.
Starting point is 00:34:39 Some awful. Can I get some awful quarterback? Someone terrible. How about that? So here's the worst. It's going to be like my flag football, Cuba. Here's actually quite good. Here's the concern.
Starting point is 00:34:51 This is the first three games of someone else their first year after being appointed. Ooh, this looks good to me. His numbers are better, too. His numbers are better. Another blind reveal as well. these are the last three games of someone after being anointed. I only put that up here to say this. You think it can't get worse.
Starting point is 00:35:19 It can. And I'm stunned. I will say on the front end, I'm not stunned. The Patriots are struggling. I'm not stunned. Drake is not as good as last year. I'm stunned.
Starting point is 00:35:31 He looks totally and completely. lost. I'm stunned by that. That part right there. And that's where for me, the middle part, the mental part is the most important part. Because when we were playing the B-roll and we're watching as viewers, a head coach put his arms on his quarterback. And he's talking to him, trying to let him know, I understand. It's going to be okay. That is concerning because what is on full display is the fact that he's not seeing the field. He's not great with his decision making right now. And when he's trotting off to the field after he has made a bad decision, that's on full display as well, his body language. And so as a player who has been in a huddle,
Starting point is 00:36:24 if I come into a huddle and I look at my quarterback, I see that wild. So the fact that he, He is operating. We see it at the at the at the podium. Yeah. You see it in his. And so this is the individual who feels like it's almost like he's lost belief in his own self. And once that happens, Wilds, it is all it is impossible for me.
Starting point is 00:36:50 We, we joke about what Harbaugh, John does for Justin. Jim, I'm sorry, Jim does for gassing up for for Herbert in terms of gassing him. But we understand the importance of it. This is why it's important to do that because sometimes you lose confidence. But the last thing I'll say is the ball, the excuse of the blood. Yeah, it's covered in blood. That was probably the most disturbing thing. Yuck, it's gross.
Starting point is 00:37:15 Because the mentality of that is like, look, I'm looking for anything to get it off me. It's like, that's like a loser's type of a mindset. Like what the- I mean, the ball's covered in-in-in-clement weather is going to happen. You're in. It wasn't any. You're playing in Foxborough, so you're going to have to deal with snow. You're going to have to deal with elements.
Starting point is 00:37:35 Well, unless it starts raining blood from the sky, Greg. Yeah, unless, and so, look, to Nick's last point that he made, it is so odd to have watched what we saw last season to now see no resemblance, no resemblance of what we saw last season on display. All right, I'm going to give some facts followed by some feelings. Okay. The facts are this. And we said it when A.J. Brown went down. We were like, not only are they losing A.J. Brown, this receiving core right now is not as good as last year's.
Starting point is 00:38:13 Because at least you ask Define Diggs. And Booty is probably better than anybody they have right now. And so the receiving core is bad. I don't want to. Last year was a mirage because you play. Was it the worst schedule of the century? This century. Okay?
Starting point is 00:38:35 Y'all didn't play any winning teams. You're one and two against teams with winning records. And since the quality of competition has improved, meaning you're playing winning teams. Let's see the graphic. These are Drake May's numbers in his last seven games, which have been against good teams. They're just, I mean, that,
Starting point is 00:38:56 there's no ifs, ands, or buts about it. You played a soft sketch. schedule. He shined. Now you've stepped up in competition and it's gotten really bad. The feelings part. It's certainly too early to write him off this season, but also for his career. Yes. Because we have seen, and he has the same physical tools, Sam Darnold, who saw a ghost, who lost confidence, who was a mess. And now, I'm just saying down the road, you never know. The one difference, though, is Donald was in bad situations. He got Josh McDaniels as the O-C., so that's what makes me wonder.
Starting point is 00:39:36 Josh McDaniels and Brable, all these folks have to wear some of that themselves. Like, nobody is helping him, but he has to wear the most of it. But can we also, can we give some credit as well? To who? Rather than just some. Well, I don't know. Somebody's at your door. Come in, fellas.
Starting point is 00:39:55 I can't believe they snuck out. That's right. There were two teams that played. I tried to tell you guys. He took mercy on you guys. He's taking knees with eight minutes left for that. It's not nice. I mean, we just credit words do, KW.
Starting point is 00:40:42 Trevor Lawrence, as I told you upstairs, If Drake May, if Drake May played excellently, which I need to see, the Patriots would have won. If Drake May played pretty good. Hold on. Wow. What is this? I'm going to end with some good news. Trevor would have won.
Starting point is 00:40:59 Trevor played great. He was balling. You lost the game. Now what is this? But it was not all a loss. Guys, we're wanting to. You guys are this week. Break dancers of the league.
Starting point is 00:41:11 Wow. The New England Patriots. Take over as this week's breakdancers. You know what? I think we need all the music at once. A confopony of sounds, fellas, to the breakdancers. Go back to cogent analysis. There was some debate about whether Drake May was crying.
Starting point is 00:42:09 I am crying. Gosh, darn. Now we're going to the cheat. You've got to go to break out to that, fellas. That's some real football talk. Oh, gosh, darn. I have a clever script for the... Oh, here we go.
Starting point is 00:42:22 Oh, gosh, Jordan. If you've ever seen a dolphin in this... see, your first thought is, oh, is that a shark fin? Are we in danger? Nope, the exact opposite. Just a friendly dolphin. Nothing to worry about. That's how the Chiefs Dolphin game felt, even though Mahomes is only up four in the third. Ended up being a 14-point win. Were you impressed? Not really. And we spent too much time there and probably should have broke there, so I'll just do this quickly. I want to give credit to Patrick, then I want to give my thoughts on the game, because this was all over yesterday, 150 career games. I always talk about
Starting point is 00:42:55 you know, his pace on trying to run down Tom Brady. Just throw them both up. 150 is a nice roundish number. Yeah. Identical records. Wow. That's interesting. That's incredible. Patrick's got him ticked in playoff wins.
Starting point is 00:43:09 Well, he had a lot of appearances. Chiefs have had buys, too, but that's fine. Super Bowl appearances, Patrick hasn't ticked. Super Bowl wins obviously tied. The, again, passing number's different, but the fewer interceptions to me is noteworthy with how much more he passes. just tracking well. So credit to Patrick 150 games in.
Starting point is 00:43:27 He's at least on pace to make it a discussion. And the fact that the records are identical is stunning. But as far as the game, I mean, I do this. Whatever. Back to boring domination. They weren't that good. It wasn't that exciting of a game. They just go on the road and win by either.
Starting point is 00:43:47 14 games played yesterday. 12 or 1 score. This was one of the two. The two games this block were the two non-weigh. one score games. That's a fitting. That's a fitting. It's just boring dominant.
Starting point is 00:43:57 I never, ever, ever worried they were going to lose. No, neither did it. I didn't think they played great. I didn't think they played great. But credit them. Look, Seattle lost to Washington with a backup quarterback.
Starting point is 00:44:06 So we saw teams have bad performances. They were, they were figured out the way to win. I heard there was humidity on the ball. Patrick never had it fall over. Was there blood all over the ball? What? Was there blood all over the ball?
Starting point is 00:44:17 Maybe. I'm not sure. It doesn't look scary yet, but it definitely feels scary with the Chiefs. Oh, yeah, buddy. You think it looks scary too? No, I'm saying it.
Starting point is 00:44:26 You can feel it coming. It's like the beginning of the horror movie. It doesn't settle down. I spent a lot of money on my skin and hair, folks. Unbelievable. I didn't realize. I think that's the problem. New from Nespresso.

That was my big analysis and they over did it. Five turnovers on the day. and they still escaped with the win.
Starting point is 00:45:24 Here's Josh Allen. Thank our defense, five turnovers. We don't deserve to win that one. But our job is to score one more point than they did. And we scored a few more, but our defense played lights out. We put our defense in some bad situations tonight. We won. That's all that matters.
Starting point is 00:45:45 Winning a game with five or more turnovers and 10 or more penalties has only happened twice in the last 30 years. And one of them was yesterday, Josh Yon, against the Chargers. More or less optimistic about the bills after win. Poor Chargers, didn't even make the topic more? I'm less optimistic. Now, look, there's still a contender. They still got to, you know, I'm not writing them off as a team that could get to the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:46:09 But this just showed me, and obviously he's phenomenal. But it's the same old Josh. Like, I was wondering, I know he had the first two games, there were opportunities where he could have turned the ball over and, you know, passes, interceptions were dropped against Houston. But I was wondering if, okay, they're putting the ball back in his hands. Is he not going to be quite as reckless? Has he matured a little bit?
Starting point is 00:46:39 And no. Now, he's awesome and he's going to be great most of the time. But he's also going to put the ball in harm's way. And when they lost last year, which was their best chance, to win the Super Bowl because my homes and the Chiefs were out. What was it? It was the turnovers. Two interceptions, two fumbles lost against Denver,
Starting point is 00:47:00 and that's why they were out. And that's what this reminded me of like, man, he is just putting the ball all into harm's way. So look, the defense played better, but I don't know if that's the good defense or the chargers are that bad. But offensive, I'm a little less optimistic. Again, it's still an elite team,
Starting point is 00:47:19 but I'm a little less optimistic. I'm actually more optimistic because, and I've heard you say this, and I agree with you, this is who Josh has to be. Yeah. Like this is just simply who he has to be. You're going to have great cape moments, superhero moments, and then you're going to have moments like this. But the fact that their defense was able to hold up and they still found a way to win. And we have kind of run with this narrative as it pertains to the Buffalo Bills that they can only win if Josh is a superhero. But they have had one constant, and that's the run game.
Starting point is 00:47:53 And James Cook, like, they can run the ball. He's a one-man show. And that's exactly the narrative. James Cook ran for 154 yards. Exactly. Had one touchdown. And it's like he couldn't have scored those other yards. We make it seem like it just has to be Josh.
Starting point is 00:48:07 This is actually going to benefit them if they can learn to win. It's like basketball. You got a great guy. You got a great. The main guy. Win when he's all. You got to be able to win without them. And produce when he's not on the floor.
Starting point is 00:48:21 That's the bills in this game against the Chargers, a team that we're identifying now that may not be great at all. You got to win those type of games, regardless if your guy has it going or not. So in one way this made me somewhat from slightly to significantly more optimistic. And then there is one caveat I'm going to add to that. The more optimistic is they proved, because I agree with what Greg said,
Starting point is 00:48:48 which is what I've been saying, is you got to let Josh be Josh and hope you get hot dice in January. But this is a little proof of concept. If we don't get hot dice in one of these games in January, maybe we can win anyway. You know, maybe we can have the, and by the way, as much as we, you know, excoriate them correctly for that Broncos loss, they didn't have hot dice that game, and they easily could have won that game. You know what I mean? The game ends up in overtime.
Starting point is 00:49:14 Like they had opportunities to win even when Josh had three turnovers, just not after the fourth. I also do think that, I just hope I hope you will remember this game the next time you see your television producers pitching. Has any man carried a load heavier than Josh Allen? Is he the latest Paul Bunyan of the NFL that there was a game where he objectively was not very good? His defense was very good. James Cook was excellent. I think their past defense is going to be a problem all year. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:48 But I do think the D-line is better than I expected. The second-year D-Tackle, Dion, is it Buchanan? I got his name wrong. But the second-year detackle, Dion, has been excellent. You see them getting pressure. Greg Rousseau is a lot of resources there. Greg Rousseau is having one of the best years of any defensive player. Dionne Walker, thank you, Dust.
Starting point is 00:50:10 So all that is reason for optimism. The caveat is this. Josh Allen took a wicked shot on a. his knee late in this game. He stopped running after that and I don't know what the result like I'm sure they're going to do some testing.
Starting point is 00:50:28 I'm sure like there is going to be looking at that. We said last week we were worried he was, I don't mind the reckless throws as much as them. So many quarterback driven runs yesterday was the least effective he's been with his
Starting point is 00:50:44 legs. If he's banged up already, that puts a hard ceiling on who they can be. But winning a game where your best player plays poorly is a huge plus unless you think he's going to play like that all the time. I don't even play like that all the time. I think like one in five games, though. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:51:04 Him playing like this is not shocking, but it's not the norm. I've got the Patriots next in the Buffalo. You've got Chargers, Patriots, Back to Back Weeks? Who set back together? Very interesting. A couple layoffs. Very interesting game. Very interesting game. We think all of you think all the cats were just right last year.

Live from New York, the show that is the home of cogent analysis, the second hour of first things first. No hijinks anymore, okay? No, the second hour of first things first is the cogent analysis. That's right. First hour's hijacked. Today, we're starting to worry about the one-win Rams. I got to ask Greg about this play. It felt like Devante could have just scored.
Starting point is 00:52:21 Like did Devante, I don't know. We'll talk about it in a minute. Meanwhile, is anyone playing better than Brock Purdy? Another great game from Brock. And the leader. What a job by Mike Evan. The Purdy's been unbelievable. Mike Evans just like not making it clear the ball's coming.
Starting point is 00:52:38 Wow. Who could have seen that coming? Mike Evans being awesome. And then sadly, he got, you know, left the field McCart. I'd have seen that coming. Mark, well, three guys. Losses all around. And Bakeshow?
Starting point is 00:52:48 We didn't talk to bake show yet later on in the show. Back to Rio. Cowboys butcher the end of the game, fall to one and two. Lamar leads a six-second game-winning drive before a quick timeout call. Here's Lamar on the final completion to Zay Flowers. Take a listen. It was a get-down timeout situation. It's something we've been practicing since camp. They ran a great route, and I just had to deliver the baby.
Starting point is 00:53:14 He caught it, and I would just, as soon as he get down, I'll just. Please see me, ref. Did the Cowboys blow it in your mind, Greg? Yeah, the Cowboys blew this one. I mean, there's no reason. There's no reason why you lose a game like this. You have the ball in your control. The clock is on your side.
Starting point is 00:53:33 You can go through the last sequence of plays. I'll just kind of talk about the final play on offense, which was the third down. You don't have any timeouts. Three-step game. or route and DAC has to get rid of the ball and a lot of us we see it and it's like man
Starting point is 00:53:52 he's throwing it away he didn't want to wait and when you when you don't have again he didn't identify they dropped the two guys there's only three guys coming in pressure but you're on a three step you're on three step you're on a time clock so the one thing
Starting point is 00:54:08 he cannot do is take a sack so and I get it he threw it away a little too quick because we're looking at it but for Dak on his timing I got to let that ball go on that third step but what about
Starting point is 00:54:22 I get the throwing it he definitely threw it away too quick if you're going to throw it away but why not just hit pickings right there in the corner of the end zone so you mean throw it to the front line he didn't have to throw it away so watch the DB look at the DB right the DB is playing with vision to Dak so Dak you don't think it would
Starting point is 00:54:40 so Dak is looking like man the DB he's looking right at me I can't throw it on the road Because he can potentially pick it because my receiver's not even looking back yet. So you think he was right to throw it away. Absolutely. Absolutely. He's right to throw it away in this situation. Don't mind it.
Starting point is 00:54:57 Where it gets dicey, you can't kick the ball. Just kick it in bounds on the kickoff. Take a couple seconds off the clock. If you take one or two. What if he runs it back? I'm just saying if he ran it back, people would be sitting here today talking about kick it out of the end zone. What do you do? No, I don't think of bitch.
Starting point is 00:55:17 I get that. But the probability of them running. It's rare. But the probability of them marching down the field in seven seconds is also real. I think the probability of Lamar completing a 25-yard pass with them having a timeout left is exponentially greater. Yes. Than them running. Yes.
Starting point is 00:55:34 But did. Okay. When they got the ball at the 35. I thought they could win. Really? I thought there was. Because this was shocking. that that happened.
Starting point is 00:55:45 I was watching the game with my nephew. I think I said to him, I was like, I think they got like a 20% chance they're going to kick it here. Like get a kick. Now, 20% chance to get a kick. And it still was a 56 yard.
Starting point is 00:55:58 It's still a 56 yard. So whatever it is. You know, so. But if don't you, but if Dallas plays better defense. Yeah. So, so, which they should have.
Starting point is 00:56:06 No, they did. They didn't have. I'm going to tell you, they did everything right except the tackle. Like the tackle. This is, This is things that sometimes don't tackle them. Or hold him up.
Starting point is 00:56:19 Do not take him to the ground. And the ball is in the air. If you grab them, hold him. Games over. Or it goes overtime. Yeah. You can't. But I don't,
Starting point is 00:56:29 I think they should have built somewhat of a wall at field goal position. Don't let them get in field. I mean, there's just no reason. If they complete a shorter pass, it's not a big deal. This is where I totally agree with through. If we keep running it,
Starting point is 00:56:43 if you look at the far. side of the field, there's a cowboy defender right, right there. That guy's got no use. The guy on the far side of the field, I should have looked. No reason to be down. No reason right there. Covering the back coming out of the back. That's totally useless.
Starting point is 00:56:58 Like, because if he complete, yeah, if he completes it, so what cares? Yeah. Then they're in Hail Mary. But the Cowboys group botched all of it. All of it in the final minute. Dak, Dak wasting 40 seconds after the scramble. trying to call the perfect play
Starting point is 00:57:16 is an abomination for a tenure veteran. It can't happen. There's no reason for it to happen. Then the Cowboys, here's the other thing where I not take issue with you, but take issue with them. If Dak and Schottenheimer, no, on this third down, we are going to be Uber conservative.
Starting point is 00:57:38 We are coached. Throw it away. Then Dak called the time out, way too early. Because he called it with 14 seconds. If he knows, listen, we're going to go for it on third down, but not really at this point. If it's not an easy touchdown, we're kicking a field goal, then you let that clock ticked down, and that forces one of two things.
Starting point is 00:57:59 Either the Ravens used their last time out, and then that play doesn't happen, or the clock ticks down to eight seconds so you can run your third down play and then kick your field goal, and then there's no. It was, I think Brian Schott and I remember who's done a good job in his year and a quarter coaching the Cowboys. This was, but he hasn't had a lot of these like high leverage, close game. Like, this was, I, listen, as someone who grew up rooting for the 90s Kansas City Chiefs, with Marty Schottnheimer as the head coach, his late, excellent coach father,
Starting point is 00:58:33 who had a lot of clock management, game management issues. It reminded me of that, except I wasn't rooting for the Cowboys. But it just, I thought the Cowboys absolutely blew the ending. It's not that the Ravens didn't deserve, but the Cowboys had the opportunity to be themselves in such a better position. Yeah, because, I mean, the notion that your first and goal at the two, you should win, I mean, then you can look at the Ravens had it right there at the goal line and got stuffed. So things happened, but it looked like the Cowboys, it looks like they've looked under different regimes. Like under McCarthy when they had clock management, mainly in the playoffs, where you'd see them manage the clock. poorly at the end of the games.
Starting point is 00:59:15 The one constant is kind of DAC. And so you have to look at that. But yeah, I mean, there's no doubt in that last minute they made several mistakes that helped lead to them losing. They had the ball with a minute nine left and one time out at the 29-yard line. The next time they ran a play,
Starting point is 00:59:35 they were at the 22-yard line with 28 seconds left. That just can't, that can't happen. Meanwhile, in Denver, what's now a familiar script for one, Bo Nix. Broncos down, he doesn't look great. Then he rallies, and the team leaves with a win. Some help from a fortuitous DPI and a Stafford pick six. Record down 14 or more since the start of 2025.
Starting point is 01:00:04 The Broncos and Bo Nix are three and two. They're the only team above 500. The rest of the NFL has won 12 games. They're 12 and 160. Are we viewing this as a Broncos comeback or a Rams collapse? Look, it's what the Broncos do, so I do want to give them great credit for this comeback. But I think it was more of a collapse because like I said earlier, the Rams Greg gave up 30 second half points, 30 to a team that had scored a combined 30 points in their first two games previously. So it's not a great offense.
Starting point is 01:00:39 It certainly gets better, you know, late in games. with Bo Nicks, so I'll give them that credit. But you got the pick six from Stafford. You know, there were mistakes, and obviously the bad call hurt the Rams. But with that defense, with Aaron Donald out there, with Trent McDuffie and these guys out there, you should not be giving up that many points in the second half. So I don't know if they relaxed at halftime. We're up 16.
Starting point is 01:01:03 It looks like it's going to be an easy night. And next thing they know they're in a football game. But I think it was more of a collapse. It was a collapse, but the Broncos took advantage of it. You're absolutely right. When you watch that game, up 16 zip, they were like, this offense can't move the ball. They can't score on us. We're not going to have to do too much more than what we've already done.
Starting point is 01:01:26 And then you start to see the adjustments being made on the Broncos side, the errors being made on the ram side. The pick six was absolutely on Stafford, and it was just, it was bad. So Collinsworth killed him for it in a way. Collinsworth almost never kills star quarterbacks. I don't know. Sometimes I know you don't even always watch with the sound. Yeah. So what Collinsworth said was that it was so clear pre-snap that Hufanga was playing
Starting point is 01:01:54 zone. Right. And because of that, he can't throw it there. I'm asking if you. It's two receivers and you got a safety. He's not in man to man. He's definitely not in man to man. So I was shocked.
Starting point is 01:02:06 I mean, that's what I thought too. He's definitely not at that. I was shocked he threw it. I was like, obviously so. Free snap. I was like, it was just shocking that he would literally just drop back, look at it, and not even try to move Fonga. Like, it was weird.
Starting point is 01:02:24 But for me, watching this game unfold, the Rams just had opportunities that they didn't take advantage of. Now, they played decent defense because the penalty, which I feel the type of way on that, because we can, we can, we can. replay and we can challenge certain things. When there's a bad call, there has to be like an immediate review. Okay, let's pick that flag up. It's actually not a flag.
Starting point is 01:02:52 Because that right there, heck of a play by Wallace. Heck of a play. You worked so hard, and I can only imagine, as a defender, to cover a receiver running away across the field and to then get an interception, get your feet down. and then you call for a defensive pass interference and you didn't grab that was a bad call that you know it's hard to overcome those types of things as defense as a bit of a basketball player too
Starting point is 01:03:19 Greg my view on this this was at I don't know 10 p.m.ish and then the Cowboys game with CD did a hook I'm going to use your arm CD did hook and I was like oh flopping has come to the NFL foul baiting. And it used to be like the underthrown ball. I can't get to it.
Starting point is 01:03:42 But this seems like a true basketball style. Head back. I'm grabbing you a little bit. Do you think that this is going to be something that we see the whole year or what? I really hope not. Because if that's the case, you can nip it. You can nip it. You can just revisit the call because everybody sees that they all have replay.
Starting point is 01:04:05 Like this was so bad. This was so bad. What's so bad is 44, the refs, he's watching the whole thing, doesn't call it. And then when the rep behind him does, he doesn't stop, he doesn't say, hey, man. They don't have a conversation or anything. It seemed like they did have a conversation, but then it held up. That, by the way, I think that's home field advantage, for the record. I think that that's where it shows up.
Starting point is 01:04:27 I think that when the flag, not the flag being thrown. I think that there is a pressure on the officials. The flag's been thrown. own. It could decide the game. I think if this game's in SoFi, it's more likely that the ref that didn't throw the flag tells him, you're wrong, man. Pick it up.
Starting point is 01:04:47 That's my, I told you, the rest to wear ear plugs. Well, yeah. I mean, so I think, I think that's a piece of it. I, you guys keep talking about this Rams defense. I mean, I don't know. Jalen Watson went out in this game. Miles Garrett. That guy was a backup.
Starting point is 01:05:03 No, that guy was a backup, and he had some good and bad games. Which you're going to have with the backup. It's fine. But Miles Garrett's not on the team right now. He's not playing for him. Puka, where's coach when I need him? It seemed to me like they missed Puka yesterday. We talked all year, all offseason,
Starting point is 01:05:21 a little bit about how Rams look great, but they're thin. Don't have a lot of depth behind them. So, like, that is something to watch. Stafford's pick six was awful. And it was, there was seven minutes left in the game. They were ahead. Like, you're seven minutes left. You're on the plus side of the 50.
Starting point is 01:05:39 You're ahead. You just can't, like, you can't make that type of mistake as a veteran quarterback. But I thought, I thought Sean McVeigh has to wear some of this as well. I agree with everything you guys are saying about the call. It was a missed call. It should have been a pick in game over Rams. I don't understand why Kyron Williams wasn't more involved in a game. You're up 16-0 and halftime.
Starting point is 01:06:00 Kyron Williams had 15 carries for 88 yards. That's six yards per carry. The first drive of the second half, Kiron Williams has zero touches, they go three and out. The second drive of the second half, when it ends, they have a 40-yard special teams penalty, which now all of a sudden Denver is in good field position, they tie the game up.
Starting point is 01:06:23 The third drive of the game, they again go away from Kiron Williams, and they are, they didn't, to me, that was a game that demanded game manager. that we didn't get from Sean McVeigh. That part was surprising. Stafford making that mistake was surprising. The one thing, and I hate to say that, hates too strong. As a Chiefs fan, I don't like to say this.
Starting point is 01:06:49 The one thing that was not surprising was that Bo Nix went from looking like a bottom five quarterback to dealing. Now, I say dealing, he did. We are saying he threw a pick to lose the game, but it got overturned. It was also a great play by the guy. But this is a level of, I've never seen a player in league history with this stat line over two years. When the game is neutral or where he's at an advantage, he's bad. Is this a play calling thing?
Starting point is 01:07:23 It's too weird to just be a mental, like, I'm going to take it up. So I do wonder, you and I's head went to a similar place. I do wonder if there is still, despite all of Sean Payton's, you know, kind of bluster, that if he has some trepidation about Bo Nix, loves the roster, loves the defense, loves his own play calling. It's like, just don't screw it up, Bo. And so he calls a conservative type of game that does not serve Bo Nix. And then once they get down big, they have no choice but to be like, shoot,
Starting point is 01:07:59 Bo let it fly And that's actually the Like does Bo Nix want Is he best served to play More of a boom or bust style? So I've seen it's only allowed I view it completely different Oh I view it completely different
Starting point is 01:08:14 I think this is more on Bo Nix Because the the game Being called is very similar Throughout the course of it It's just the mentality and the approach That Bo Nix takes When it's like okay I don't want to lose the game but then in the fourth quarter, when it's almost like, I need all or nothing, he goes all or nothing.
Starting point is 01:08:35 He's free. He doesn't put that barrier on himself of, oh, I can mess this up. It's like, nope, I'm going on. I'm actually going to take that shot. I'm actually going to make that throw. I'm actually going to run. I'm actually going to do those things that I ordinarily wouldn't do in the first half, first couple games. It's the oddest thing.
Starting point is 01:08:55 I felt that way about Caleb, but now Caleb has taken the, he's taking the, he's taking. taking the next step, but I think he's been challenged to take the next step. I'm not so certain that Bo has been challenged in that manner to where it's like, Bo, we need that all the time. And I don't know if he has a mode of turning it down, because he is turnover prone. And Caleb isn't turnover prone. And so you're dealing with that. And so it's a battle.
Starting point is 01:09:22 I think the Rams are on more than slight concern alert. The Rams? Yeah. have a win or it's like there's the signature win. Yeah. We've only got one win. Pretty best player in the league. New from Nespresso.

Starting point is 01:10:09 No huddle time. We're not talking about Drake, so stop making fun of me in the commercial breaks. First up, Joe Burrow threw three touchdowns. Aaron Rogers through three touchdowns. And almost 300 yards. Both teams are now two and one. Get this, Rogers deep passes. Yesterday he had two.
Starting point is 01:10:28 The previous 12 games he had two. He was 0 for 9 on deep passes in the first two weeks of the season. Greg, we'll start with you since it's your old quarterback and longtime friend. Did you learn more about the Steelers or the Bengals? I learned more about the Steelers. The Bengals, I kind of know who they are. It is what it is. Defensively, they didn't really show up the way that they had the first couple weeks.
Starting point is 01:10:54 But the Steelers, they did something that. that we, you put it up there. We hadn't seen them do. Number one, they won in a shootout. Yep. Which is, no one had that on their bingo card. Number two, they're pushing the ball down the field. But when I watched them play,
Starting point is 01:11:10 they had some creative play calls that were like, oh, I haven't seen that in Mike McCarthy's on his play sheet before. And so it was a little excitement there. Aaron can make these throws. He's going to be protected, it to a degree in terms of getting the ball out of his hands. If he has time and they start pushing the ball down the field to get defenses to back up,
Starting point is 01:11:36 this can look like something for real. And I know I say that because I have not believed in this team. No. If they start to look like this and they can push the ball down the field, it's going to open everything up underneath. They got a good running game to their credit. It's going to open everything up underneath. They have a good enough defense.
Starting point is 01:11:56 This team could then start to be really a team we look at that can make some noise within that division and definitely in the AFC. I learn more about the Bengals because I think that was an aberration for the Steelers. And I think it was related to the Bengals defense. Like I agreed it. They looked a little different. Remember, Rogers did say everybody mocked him, including us. You know, I got to talk to Mike about the play calls or whatever. But maybe they did sit down and say, look, this is working less.
Starting point is 01:12:21 You know, it doesn't have to be adversarial when he talks with Mike about it. So it looked good. I just, there's no way I see them continuing offensively to play like that. I think it was the Bengals defense. And I feel like, I still think the Bengals will make the playoffs, think they'll be
Starting point is 01:12:39 them and the Ravens in this division. So I think they'll be ahead of Pittsburgh at the end of the day. But I was giving the Bengals credit, I think, more for better defense than they really probably deserve. They gave up 27 to what looks like a bad Tampa Bay team. They
Starting point is 01:12:56 held a Houston team that just can't score you know and you can't score you know the ball but they just yeah they just couldn't put it in his own no Nico Collins yes that's true right but I'm just saying but that's that's their reality in Houston for a while and and they got
Starting point is 01:13:12 you know the Steelers who scored three points last week against the Patriots put up 30 on them so I think that defense is not as as good as I was suspecting Listen, I want to, what the Steelers did was really impressive. I mean, Jalen Warren had 17 for a buck 30, and that was with an 80-yard run being taken away from him.
Starting point is 01:13:35 You know what I mean? He almost had an insane day. Rogers played the best game he's played in two and a half years. So, like, credit to them, I agree with Brew in that it did yesterday. Last week, I was like, hey, I've got to be open to the possibility I was wrong about the Bengals' investment on defense, you know, not paying off. Everyone also has to now be open to the possibility that the Bengals' investment on defense is not going to pay off the way they had hoped. But I do want to say one thing that I think we all may be learned
Starting point is 01:14:06 thanks to, if you're on Twitter, Scott Kasmar, who's been hammering this stat and we triple-checked it. It is accurate. One thing evidently we should have known is if the Bengals are losing in the fourth quarter, they're going to lose. This is shocking. Joe Burrow in his career, Brew. has trailed 35 times by any margin with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. Any margin.
Starting point is 01:14:32 Okay. He's one in 34. Wow. And for all, one. It almost feels and seems like one and 34. And I mean, in context, Patrick has six career wins when trailing in the final 13 seconds. However, he also has 17 wins when trailing in the final eight minutes. Lamar has 10.
Starting point is 01:14:52 Josh has 13. One in the final seven. But there is, the Bengals are built in theory to win shootouts, but they don't. Joe Burrow in his career, when the Bengals allow 30 points, has two wins. He's won two shootouts ever. Again, context, Patrick's at 11, Lamar's at 7, Josh is at 8. When the Bengals allow 25 points, 25, Joe Burroughs 6 and 24. So again, I'm not, Burroughs a great player.
Starting point is 01:15:23 What I am saying is, and these are all via Scott Casimir and we checked them, they kind of come and go as the defense does. Now, it's not that those games, they don't put up a bunch of points themselves, but the fact that he is one win when trailing with eight minutes left in the game and two wins when the team allows 30 points. Building a team to win shootouts when you don't win shootouts is a tough way to go out life. Head to San Francisco. Brock Purdy, undefeated, Brew.
Starting point is 01:15:51 He's throwing nine touchdowns tied for the lead league. He's yet to be sacked, which is wild. He's in first place in the NFC West all by himself. Purdy this season is ranks. Records first. Points second, third. Completion percentage. Total TD is second with 10, pass rating.
Starting point is 01:16:09 133's first. Is Purdy playing, Brew, like the best player in the league. Although you did cool on him a little bit this off season. Not really. A little bit. We just didn't talk much for Brock Purdy. I won't. he would be the, if the vote was today, and I don't think just Bruce Ballet,
Starting point is 01:16:28 he would win the MVP. Like, if the vote was now, he'd be the MVP. I think that after the way Josh played yesterday, I don't know. You can see those one-yard touchdowns, one-gosh? Without him. Nobody else could have scored, though. But he, and look, he's surgical moving the ball down the field. And the one thing that, and he's always been that way,
Starting point is 01:16:51 but he also put the ball in harm's way. a lot. You know, and the last few years, as coach pointed out last week, he's had to double figure interceptions, even though he didn't play the whole season last year. But this year, he has not been turning the ball over. He's got one turnover, one interception. His nine touchdowns is highest in the league for passing touchdowns with Kirk Cousins, with Couss, but Couss has got three interceptions.
Starting point is 01:17:17 And he's using his legs, as we saw yesterday, the couple of plays that didn't count. because of penalty. But in addition to the sack, you got to give the line some credit. But he's, he's athletic. Yeah. And so,
Starting point is 01:17:32 honestly, it seems crazy. I don't think he's the best player in the league. But right now at this point, he's been the best quarterback. Yeah. He would be the, I don't,
Starting point is 01:17:42 is there any, any disagreement that he would be MVP right now? Yeah, I don't see who you could put in front of him. Right. Like, look, he's playing,
Starting point is 01:17:51 he's playing with a, swag and a belief that he's the best player on the field. Yeah. And his coach is leaning into that. Like he fits. I don't care how you view, how we all view this offense, him being a game manager, him being a play. What doesn't matter.
Starting point is 01:18:11 He makes this offense go. And I would, I believe we all were questioning the skill guys around him. Aside from. CMC. That's why, yeah, that's why I give him a ton of questions. And it's like, we can't, we can't not put this on Purdy. No. Because he's been absolutely fantastic.
Starting point is 01:18:32 He's been the best offensive player. He's the engines. And so for me, when, when you look at what he's doing, when does it stop? Because their defense, their defense has been, they didn't play great. Yes, me. Go ahead. Sorry. But offensively, what he's been able to do.
Starting point is 01:18:53 And I think one of the points that you made with his legs, and I don't want to compare him to Patrick Mahomes, but there are certain guys that run when it matters and it's backbreaking. That's Patrick Mahomes all day long. Can he run more? Of course. But he does it in the moments where it just breaks your back. Purdy does that too.
Starting point is 01:19:16 He doesn't always run, but when he does it's like the right time. It's the important run and he gets what he needs. to really just solidify, we're going to win this game because of this. He's been outstanding. Like, he would be unanimously in the top three of everyone's MVP ballot. And I think he probably, again, very early. Baker at this point last year would have won it.
Starting point is 01:19:39 So, like, we'll see how things change. And we'll see if there have been times in Shanahan's career where the Niners have been the ultimate front runner team. And by which I mean, when you're playing a team that does, doesn't have the personnel to match up with you, you look like the greatest team ever. And then if you play in a fair fight, some of your personnel weaknesses can be exposed. But this isn't an Avengers situation. He has been, to your point, the best player.
Starting point is 01:20:06 With that said, I'm me, so I'd be a little annoying on something. So can we, I think this play is brilliant. I think it's going to become more a bigger factor in NFL games, particularly on third and longs. The hook and lateral. Okay. So that's, so that's an awesome play. And 80 of Purdy's passing yards of that play.
Starting point is 01:20:27 82 or 80 is what it went in the book. Can we show Debo Samuel stat line? Because I think this is proof that we need to fix how we classify these. That's how it goes down in the books. Debo Samuel, zero catches. How many yards do you have 80? How many receiving touchdowns? One guys.
Starting point is 01:20:44 Again, I'd be saying this for anyone. We need that stat line can't exist. Well, you didn't catch. I hear you, but what would you call? Russian yards. Or it's rushing yards. It's just rushing. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:56 It's rushing yards. It's rushing yards and a rushing touchdown is all it is. Again, so he wouldn't go to Purdy. No, he threw to someone else and then someone else. So it should be, he'd get the seven yards. He'd get the, yeah, you got the two yards that he got. Yeah. I mean, that's obviously what it should be.
Starting point is 01:21:10 If that guy fumbled and Debo picked it up and ran, that's, you know what I mean? So again, that's not a party thing. I think Bernie with the butt that statistically you should not be able to have zero catches for 80 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown. Not bad. Thank you. Some of the best quarterbacks in the lead have really come out. We're really, because his plays bottom of the barrel now. Play going up.
Starting point is 01:21:30 Now do I want to see him play someone on the Cargill's dolphins and jet lagged Rams? I do. But still, in the meantime, they look great. Coming up next, five winless teams. Does anyone still have a heartbeat? That's next on first things first. Whoa and three.
Starting point is 01:21:45 That's good. I like that. Well, not quite enough for a spot bonus, but I like it. Hear that? It's your money calling. It wants a promotion. Elevate your savings with the Scotia high-interest savings account. Always earn high regular interest rates that grow the more you save and invest.
Starting point is 01:22:05 Conditions apply. Visit scotiabank.com slash h-I-SA to learn more. Scotia Bank. You're richer than you think. A big noon Saturday, the Wolverines taking on the Golden Gophers, live from Minnesota at 10 o'clock. Part of Fox Tober Fest. Yeah, that's a lot.
Starting point is 01:22:27 Fox overfest is awesome. Was not awesome is the way Michigan ended that game against I was terrible. I think Greg liked it. But it does serve. A little Western Michigan. Oh, come on, Greg. It was terrible. It does serve them right though.
Starting point is 01:22:41 It was terrible. It does serve them right though. Well, it's not their fault. Sorry. Kind of. Yeah, they should. Five winless teams, the Titans, they don't look that good. The Dolphins.
Starting point is 01:22:53 Yeah, injuries too. That's not good either. Baker and the Bucks also injured. Chargers and the Texans who have made the playoffs at 0-1-3. Twice. They did an 18 as well. So can any team salvage their season? Or are we just talking about five teams for the last time this calendar year?
Starting point is 01:23:13 Well, listen, I'm going to turn this segment in a slight different direction just for a moment because no one here is going to say the Titans or the Dolphins, and we're not going to mention the Titans or the Dolphins really all year. But I have to ask Greg Jennings about a play. I don't think the Titans can salvage their season. I have to ask him about this Cam Ward play. Can we roll it, Dust? My question is very simple.
Starting point is 01:23:37 Is this acceptable? He was doing that in Miami. Okay. He likes it. Is that acceptable? So, no. And my reason why it's not, you're not that type of player to be able to do that yet, man.
Starting point is 01:23:54 Don't, don't. I've never seen it. anything like it, bro. I was, I had this game on, but it didn't have the sound on. And I assumed the play was whistled dead. I, I didn't. Okay. You don't, you don't, your play doesn't warrant. Okay. That you get to do that. I like it. Um, I like these relaxing. That's how we played to my head. You'd like, you know what you know what you get? You know when you would like it more if Mahomes did it. That's probably. Yeah, um, but he would never. Um, to answer the question, I think the bucks can't be. The
Starting point is 01:24:26 They're all in three. They're a game out of first place. And Baker will be back in three weeks. I mean, you're saying like I'm crazy. To me, there's only two viable options here. The Bucks and the Texans are the only, the Dolphins, Titans, Chargers are the worst teams in football. The Bucs have, they are 0.3.
Starting point is 01:24:52 They have been, had a chance to win all three games. and if they can tread water without Baker, I think that they can salvage their season. They're my answer here. Correct. I want to say the Texans because they were my pick to get to the AFC championship game, not the Super Bowl, but the championship game.
Starting point is 01:25:15 But, and they did it last year, obviously, but I just think I'm sticking with that pick. That's not, I don't see anything to lead me to believe that they're going to turn it around. I agree with Nick because, in part, a large part, because of the division. It's just very forgiving. Like, 8 and 9 won it last year. They're not playing well.
Starting point is 01:25:37 And Baker being out three weeks does hurt big time. But you're going, unless you just completely fall off, you're going to have a chance in that division. So I think they got the most life of any of these teams, secondly, Houston. I need to see who the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have coming up on their schedule. I don't think it's the Texans for me. It's the Texans for me. They got a pretty good, tough schedule.
Starting point is 01:26:03 They do, but when you have... Well, the Texans, I think, have a pretty forgiving next few weeks. Like, the Texans can get climbed back. Show either one. When you look at the Texans and you understand who they are, like, this is the Texans. The Dallas won't be easy. And obviously the Jags are rolling, but that's a division game. Then you got the Giants.
Starting point is 01:26:24 the chargers, the, like, it's the Texans for me. And, again, they can definitely be four and six. The bucks, you got your starting quarterback who's going to be out and missing time. Nico Collins comes back. If this defense, which this defense hasn't been. It hasn't been as good. They haven't been as good. Will Anderson's great, but the defense as a whole has not been that.
Starting point is 01:26:47 And it's primarily up front where they just haven't been able to generate as much pressure to eliminate the big plays. But on the back end, them giving up the big plays, this is just not what we've seen with the Texans. They are giving up explosive to you, to you, to you, to everybody. But offensively, they've been okay. They've been nothing to. No, but you would have thought we would have accepted this offensive production before the year.
Starting point is 01:27:15 Absolutely. They still can't run the ball. They've been able to run the ball in years. I just don't think, I don't think the Texans have a clear path. because I think the Jacks are legitimately very good. And then I don't think, and the cults just beat them. Yeah. Yeah, the culture, like, listen, we lost to the Chiefs and the Ravens,
Starting point is 01:27:37 and then we just beat the, so the culture, you know, potentially there. And I think the AFC is just much more crowded. And I think it's going to take 10 wins to get the nine spot or the seven spot in the AFC. I don't think he'll take that in the NFC. and I also think we almost should metaphorically pour one out for the fact that no one's even going to make the Chargers case. Like nobody like that... Early in that game yesterday, I was like, okay, maybe they're going to do something
Starting point is 01:28:07 and it was there for the taking. If Danny gives up on the Chargers, I'll pick up the Chargers. Well, Danny's not allowed to because Danny last week said that he still thought they were going to win 10 games despite the fact that he thought they were going to lose to the bills. So if that's how he felt last week, they're right on track. But if he changed his mind, I will grab the charges from the bargain bin. Really? You shouldn't do that.
Starting point is 01:28:27 Yeah, I like it. Buy low. I like it. He's up for a new team. I like bad mo. Oh, yeah, you're right. We do need K. W.
Starting point is 01:28:34 All one and twos are exactly, Patriots one and two and the Rams one and two is exactly the same. Hit the break it to everybody. It wasn't a good game. Rough for Drake May. Do I still believe in Drake May? Yes. Well, yeah. Go ahead, Parkins.
Starting point is 01:29:11 You still believe in Drake May? Well, you guys have had a great show today. Thanks, thank you. There's been a lot of music in the show. Yes, keep going. Trumpets, the bagpipes, the break dancers. And we loved your song, Wilds. Yes, thank you.
Starting point is 01:29:26 But we thought the lyrics were a little off. So at the OT, we rewrote the lyrics. Oh, that's pretty great. Should you believe in Drake May? Oh, please, Parkins. No. That's it. That's it.
Starting point is 01:29:42 Hold on. No. We got it. We are the most musical show on sports TV. You know what? Let me hear it one more time. Hold on. Yeah, tune it.
Starting point is 01:29:56 No. Two touchdowns on 30 drives. It's not good. No. Live from New York, first thing's first overtime today. Too soon to worry about the Rams. They're one and two just like the Patriots.
Starting point is 01:30:12 Meanwhile, MVP watch is Brock Purdy in the driver's seat? I could watch this play all day. Just right in the bucket. And finally. He had several plays like that. You could watch all there. Is Danny officially writing off the Chargers and or Justin? Oh, how could you?
Starting point is 01:30:31 Did you not see that meaningless Quentin Johnston drop? Alongside Chris Brassard. I'm Kevin Wildless. Nick Wright and Danny Parkins, who to your credit said the Chargers weren't going to win? It's one of my... This is when it starts. Now the rallies coming, right? Can I ask you a question?
Starting point is 01:30:48 It's happened before. When the Chargers jumped out, started looking good, Josh starting to put the ball on the ground. Yeah. Did you feel in your heart I never should have left Justin Herbert in the Chargers? There were moments of regret, but that's what the Chargers do to it. They tease you. They twist the knife. That's what Herbert does.
Starting point is 01:31:06 Well, mostly the Chargers. First thing first overtime. We're going back to Rio, actually. Cowboys mismanaged the clock, lose the game. Lamar shouts out Tyler Loop after the game. Bruce said it made Tyler Loop very happy. Yeah. He probably was just glad to
Starting point is 01:31:26 mentioned by Herm Lamar knows his name. Lamar, let me get your number out. Lamar, you want to hang out? There's Lamar and dad. We all won. You know, one of the court. We're moving on one of court, bro.
Starting point is 01:31:43 Shout out to you. Shout out the specialty, defense, offense. We batted at the center go down. We had all this, all this adversity going on, y'all, boys, and we conquer. This is the start of the season right here. This one hurts. This one, I mean, it's just getting back to work. Being candid, it was just getting back to work, but it sucks.
Starting point is 01:32:01 It sucks. He's, to this game say more about the Ravens or the Cowboys to you, Danny. I thought about this for probably too long because it was a great game. It was such an ex. When they meeting the Super Bowl, it's going to be exciting. It was a great Super Bowl called by you, Drew. It was so exciting. I was thinking to the old, like, I just hope that both teams have fun.
Starting point is 01:32:23 Like, I really had a lot of fun watching the game. But where I came out was Dallas, because I know that Dallas is good enough to play in big games, but I don't know if I know that Brian Schottenheimer is good enough to. coach in big games. That was where I came out. Like, you guys did a really good job and the pictures you showed at the end of the game and there were so many things at the end of the game.
Starting point is 01:32:48 But if I'm a Cowboys fan and I watch that game, just the number of points that they left on the board. And it was a high scoring game. But just we'll throw up some of the miskews and the chances throughout a field goal from second and goal from the one yard line in the first quarter.
Starting point is 01:33:03 Javante Williams had 44 rushing yards on that drive. And they passed on second and third down. Like, that would just, that would just drive me crazy. The fumble on the Baltimore 23 was on that weird shovel pass to Ferguson. I thought they got a little hosed on that call, but yeah. Yeah, it was a tough moment in the game. I thought that was a fumble, but I mean, the reps agree.
Starting point is 01:33:24 The, the players at the end of the game, which are just, there's so many that you could, like, you do one back, and this is that fumble call there. But, like, if you go to the end of the game, Call the time out later. It never happens. Complete the pass to pickings. It never happens. Execute at all, and you're walking out of there with a win.
Starting point is 01:33:50 But I don't understand. The one that is the most egregious is still kicking the ball out of the back of the end zone. There's just no defense for it at all. And you can say, well, it's the special teams guy or Aubrey kicked it out of bounce twice earlier. Whatever. It just can't happen because any play here that results. in even two seconds running off the clock. The game is open.
Starting point is 01:34:12 Except him running some. Now, again, it's incredibly rare today. Yes. But don't you think if they ran back a touchdown, everybody would be saying, why'd you kick it to him? That's the only way you lose. Honestly, Brew, I think then it probably,
Starting point is 01:34:29 why did you call the timeout so quick beforehand? Why did you call the time out with 14 seconds left? Yeah, did you left time on the clock? But it was just a series of events. and any one of them, you make a different decision. That game goes to overtime at worse, and instead you lose in regulation. So I thought Dallas can come out of that game saying,
Starting point is 01:34:47 we had a stop on fourth down. We had all of our secondary players injured. We got a few. There were some moments for Dallas to feel good. Dak was excellent. The offense was good. The only person who really lost the game was Brian Schottenheimer. The only where I disagree with you, though,
Starting point is 01:35:02 is I felt like, I feel like we've seen this late game, poor execution, poor clock management, before Schottnheimer was coaching the Cowboys. We saw it with McCarthy. I remember back if we saw it with Garrett. But we've seen, like, this is, this predates Schottenheimer. And so, Dak, I'm not putting it all on Dak, but he is the one constant throughout bad management, you know,
Starting point is 01:35:28 playoff games, you know, he was Ezekiel Elliott snapping the ball? Well, that wasn't him, but the play game where he did the course, quarterbacks draw and they ran out of time against the Niners. This is kind of been part for the courts with the Cowboys. But I do agree that I learn more about them. But I'm looking at it positively because as bad as that defense is, I thought that defense showed some things yesterday. Again, you're playing an offense with two of the best,
Starting point is 01:35:58 you know, one of the best running backs, one of the best quarterbacks of all time, actually, both of them. and they're averaging 37 points a game when Zay Flowers is there. You stopped them on fourth. Your run defense has been horrendous. And you kept Derek Henry under four yards of carry. You shut them down on fourth and one in the fourth, first quarter. You shut them down at the goal line.
Starting point is 01:36:21 So your list, I could point to things with the Ravens, too, you know, that are very similar. And so I just think maybe you found something with the rookie bar ham. I just, and I get, I agree that the defense still needs a ton of work. But to your point, they lost a lot of their secondary. They're playing with backups. And they, they showed like, if I'm in that, on that team now, I'm saying the pieces are here to be good defensively. Now maybe Christian Parker has to improve dramatically. Yes.
Starting point is 01:36:54 All right. We thought he was going to be a great D.C. maybe we'll in the future. He's got to show something now. But I think they showed that they do have the defensive capacity to actually be a decent defense. Maybe. I think that is maybe correctly assigning a lot of credit to how dominant this Ravens offense is going to be every week. Zay Flowers is there because they did allow even prior to the final field goal 31 points despite getting some big stops. You know, stop them on the goal on to your point.
Starting point is 01:37:25 The Cowboys thing, and this is where I, this isn't my fake news hat, this is my, what are those hats like they used to wear in the 80s movies, a little propeller on them? A little propeller hats. Little propeller hats. But they weren't the 80s. This is my analytical nerd hat I will put on for a moment. There are certain things a coach can do where it is so seared into my memory. It is no different than if when I'm in Vegas at a blackjack table, I see someone. stand on a 16 because they have a funny feeling.
Starting point is 01:37:59 I'm like, okay, I judge you. I judge you. I, not only I judge you, but I now know something about you as a human being. And it's going to take a lot for me to unknow that. And I now feel very anxious about Schottenheimer's ability to manage end-of-game scenarios. I feel, and it's top-down because Dak carries some of it, Christian Parker. The defense at the end was, was, was, as bad as kicking it out of the back of the end zone is from a strategic standpoint,
Starting point is 01:38:30 that the defense's not understanding, hey, guys, we do not care anything they do the first 15 yards. You know what I mean? There is nothing they can do in the first 15 yards that hurt us. So go ahead. All of that, to me, are real game management disaster class things. With that said, and I'm very curious when we look back on this, if we say if this was a turning point for the Ravens, or more canaries in the coal mines, it took all of those cowboys disasters
Starting point is 01:39:01 for us not to be talking about. Second straight week, the Ravens blew a double-digit lead. And John Harbaugh is not there to blame. Now, maybe had they blown it, it would have become a self-fulfilling prophecy, and they'd blow more. And now because they pulled this one out of the fire, that psychological part,
Starting point is 01:39:17 because I think there's a big psychological piece of that with this Ravens team. Clearly. They cleared that hurdle, and they will be a different team now moving. forward. But a lot of the issues we've talked about them that we were talking about with them one week ago. If the Cowboys managed that last minute better, we were talking about, oh my God, are the Ravens just last year they missed the playoffs? This year they've blown two double-digit
Starting point is 01:39:41 leads. Like the, you know, are they in real trouble? And I don't, while they deserve credit for what they did after the Cowboys kicked it out of the end zone, the fact that they even got there was they were kind of passengers in the cowboy's own demise. So that's something, it's just to me, Brew, I'm going to be watching for Baltimore because I'm not certain if they're over that yet. Well, look, they just quickly, they would tell you the last few weeks they're not thinking about that, right? But they clearly were. Lamar in the locker room told us.
Starting point is 01:40:11 A lot of people mentioned it. So it was clearly on their mind. So we'll see how they respond. Head to Denver where the Rams fell to one and two. A few weeks ago, we were talking about this super team. Going 17 and 0. Here's Sean McVeigh. Take a listen.
Starting point is 01:40:30 Yeah, it's tough. You know what? But this is sports. You sign up for all of it. And love our group. Just came up short. You give the Broncos credit. They found a way to get it done.
Starting point is 01:40:38 We'll look at ourselves and figure out how we can improve. Okay. Is it too early to worry about the Rams, Danny? Not at all. Because this is the ultimate S-Bob team. Like, for legacy, the Bills and the Ravens are S-Bob. Because it's the last thing that Lamar and Josh need. you build this team, you bring back Stafford, you trade for Miles Garrett,
Starting point is 01:41:00 Aaron Donald's comes out of retirement. The only way this season is defined as a success is if you win the Super Bowl. And I still think the Rams are going to be relevant in December and probably make the playoffs in January. And we'll see if this ends up being true. But as we sit here today, I would guess that the first three weeks of the season cost them home field advantage. Yes. And I would guess that it, not just home field advantage. that it not just home field advantage through the playoffs,
Starting point is 01:41:26 potentially cost them any home games at all. Correct. If you don't win the division, you probably don't get a home game. Correct. So they've already lost to the Niners who are undefeated. So there are two games back in the lost column of the Niners with a loss heads up. They're because of the Seattle loss to Washington, only a game back of them. But still, they're in third place in their own division, which is the toughest division in football with a loss of the first place team.
Starting point is 01:41:49 And you can say that two of the three losses are mostly on the coach. Like, if you think they lost that game in Australia because of their strategy of when they flew out, and you blew a 16-point second-half lead to Bo Nix, and you settled for all of those short field goals, and there were special teams gaffs again when you fired your special teams coach last year. It's like every time the Rams lose, something comes up in special teams. This one, it's a 40 yards of field position wiped out by a penalty. They settled for all of those short field goals in the game. They're still going to be very good, and the glass half full case is,
Starting point is 01:42:24 they were in this game without Puka and Miles Garrett, but that's not what they're playing for. They're playing to different standards. And also, this is an absurd thing we have on the screen right there. Rams led 16-0 at halftime. Matt Stafford threw the ball 55 times. Pook and Naku is not playing. Right.
Starting point is 01:42:45 Kyron Williams was six yards of carry all night. And so on only 15 parries, so to speak. Like that, so that speaks to your point on the coaching. I said over the summer that the biggest thing that I think could stop the Rams would be having to play outdoor playoff games. To Danny's point, that's now more likely. They are a thin team. I don't, like, Jalen Watson got hurt in this game.
Starting point is 01:43:14 You know, he's a champion with the Chiefs. I like him. I hope he comes back healthy. With him out, and the kid who came in for him got the pick, and it should have been a pick. I do think they, everything I'm saying, I also think they got screwed by the rest. Well, they shouldn't have been in that position.
Starting point is 01:43:30 Miles Garrett, we don't know when he's coming back. Aaron Donald has been there. He's been a good player. He's been a good player. They are better off with him than without him. And we'll see how far he ramps it up. Up to this point, he has not been game wrecking Aaron Donald.
Starting point is 01:43:50 And Pooka's out and McVeigh seems annoyed might be too strong, confused about what Puka's status is. Certainly we haven't heard any positive news. Yes, and so, Brew, they were already going to be a thin team. We thought it was going to be a tough division when none of us, I don't think, thought the Niners were going to be as good as they are right now.
Starting point is 01:44:12 And it turns out the Cardinals even aren't a walkover, like the Cardinals are going to make you fight. So worry about them missing the playoffs. I'm not worried about that, barring a Stafford injury. at all. But them making the playoffs at 11 and 6 and getting, you know, winning one wild card round game and losing
Starting point is 01:44:31 in round two is a catastrophe for what the expectations and were going into the year. Yeah, I'm with you guys. I think they'll make the playoffs, but you are right. They are S. Bob, and it's this year. Like, this is the year you have to.
Starting point is 01:44:47 It's like the Lakers when they win got Gary Peyton and Carl Malone. This year, we got to do it. It's not The Ravens, the bills, they have time. They don't, and they don't look anything like a Super Bowl team right now. So I think if they get in the playoffs as a wild card, I don't think they would win the NFC. So would you be, if they lose to Philadelphia and Jalen Hertz is 4-0 against Matthew Stafford in his career, would you start to have real worries? Well, their next two games are Philly and Buffalo.
Starting point is 01:45:17 So like, and we know Miles Garrett's not going to be there for those. He's not allowed to come back for those. We don't know if Pooka's going to be there. Their past defense right now, as Trent McDuffie's been awesome. He has been worth the trade. He's been great in every game they've played. But with no Miles Garrett and with Jalen Watson not there, the past defense is not better than last year,
Starting point is 01:45:39 even without, because last year they didn't have Miles Gareth, but they had Jaredverse. I mean, one in four, you worry. Any team that falls to one and four can miss the playoffs. All right. Head to Buffalo, Danny's Chargers. Wow. Got five turnovers and still lost. They are still looking for their first win, Parkins.
Starting point is 01:46:01 Derwin James, however, still believes. We're going to see if you do. Take a listen. Yeah, yeah, I mean, 14 and 3, man. I feel like we still can go, man. And we're getting better every game. I know it ain't about a getting better league. It's about wins and losses.
Starting point is 01:46:15 But I feel like, bro, we're getting better. So got to keep attacking it. But that's all we can do. Parkins. Yeah, I still believe. Now, for it, brew, I see those eyebrows. These topics have not gone well for me. The Internet's like you guys are so mean to me during them.
Starting point is 01:46:35 I feel like a little bit of a punching bag during them. Just have better opinion. Okay, well, I'm trying. But here's, it's really hard to defend. Can we just play what Tom Brady said about my guy, Justin Herbert, please? Let's just play this, please. Herbert trying to throw down the middle of the field. the baldess can'tling but there's a safety in the middle of the field poor awareness poor decision
Starting point is 01:46:58 throws them a meatball sub so i decided because we have a great budget and i learned from the best in brew anytime for free food if you guys could bring out the meatball subs please wow we haven't done food in a while yeah let's throw in meatball subs thank you troy did we order those or make those oh we ordered them those look fantastic yeah you can have one anybody pass the long on the air. They taught us sadly. Everybody wants a meat pulse up. Because after the show, I'm all up in there. That's my comfort food.
Starting point is 01:47:29 But you know what else is comforting? Oh. That it's not Justin Herbert's fault. It's just, he just threw a meatball. Are you kidding me? You're not serious. The best quarterback in history just, you're not serious. Let's just look at some things that are happening to Justin Herbert.
Starting point is 01:47:42 Let's be honest. No one has lost more yards to drops in the NFL this year than Justin Herbert. The guy is getting sacked. Some of that's on him. Sure, some of it is on him. His offensive line has the most penalties of any team in the NFL this year. You're going to like this one. They are dead last in rushing yards before contact.
Starting point is 01:48:02 They are initiating contact within 0.4 yards every time they get the ball. Over for four on 4th downs is happening to him. They take them off the field on 4th down. Some of that is just whatever. You're coping here, Wilde. It's the comfort food. I want to just show you some plays. Can I show you some plays?
Starting point is 01:48:18 No. Not if they are. I want to show you somebody. Hold on. You asked a question. I'm going to answer. I'm not allowing it to be rhetorical. Here is my problem, and then I'll let you show the plays.
Starting point is 01:48:31 I love you. My problem, and this was what I argued with Ruiz about, what I argued with you about. Yeah. You guys love showing these plays where other guys make mistakes, as if the game isn't right with plays where Herbert fails to take advantage. of the mistakes the other team makes. They got five turnovers. Five.
Starting point is 01:48:56 Yeah. This is, by the way, the second time in Herbert's career. The other teams turned the ball over five times, and they've lost. The first time was a playoff game, which amazingly is the best playoff game he's ever played in. They blew that lead. But only guy, so he's just the unluckiest guy.
Starting point is 01:49:15 So show me how he's the only guy who has an overrated former first round pick, drop a pass. I'm going to get to the Quentin Johnson play. And the first play I'm going to actually show you is a touchdown. This is a sideways run that they have to make, like the amount of horizontal running that they are doing here. Mike McDaniel just might not be a fit, Nick. Oh, I'm going to punch you.
Starting point is 01:49:37 Listen, the next drive after the Josh Allen Turner. What's wrong with that? He has to break a tackle. It's not normal south. Third and five, we're running, we're running sideways. We're running sideways. We're running sideways. We're running sideways.
Starting point is 01:49:48 We're running sideways. stop the run because they're not afraid of the quarterback. Help the guy out a little bit. And then, yeah, the Quentin Johnston drop is a bad one. God forbid. A guy drops a pass. Okay, it's a four-point game in the fourth quarter. Danny, Danny, why are they trailing?
Starting point is 01:50:03 It's a right between the night. I'm not saying Herbert has been good or good enough. No. I am saying that it is a totality of errors. Yes, I agree. It's a totality of errors. I'm not running on if they can get to 10 wins. That part, okay, so that, so two things, quick.
Starting point is 01:50:18 Who they beat? I mean, they got to go five and one in the division. They went five and one in the division last year, so that can happen again. Because it happened last year, it could happen again? Based on what? How much are the analysis of this thing happened to the chiefs in the past, so they can do it again? Again, people have to stop comparing one of the worst franchises this century to one of the top two defining franchises of the century. But that's not the point.
Starting point is 01:50:42 Here is my frustration. Give us an extra 30 seconds, Christina. you give a whole list of reasons the team stinks and then explains why the team can go 10 and 4 in the next 14. That's not a team that stinks. You give a whole list of things wrong with the team that then you men and black flashy thing yourself into convincing isn't wrong with the team
Starting point is 01:51:05 as to why they can still win. And you somehow have decided that one of the three most inept offenses in the entire sport is not in large, part because of the quarterback. So I know you keep saying Justin Herbert has not been good. Can you can you manage to say Justin Herbert thus far this year not only has not been good has been bad and is one of the primary reasons the Chargers are 0 and 3? Can you pass the meatballs? Yeah, he's been bad and he's one of the primary reasons.
Starting point is 01:51:35 Okay, good. And they're cooked. Yeah. And they're done. And they're season's over. They're not cooked. And we're never going to talk about him again. Oh, wait till they beat Seattle. Oh, I love it. Let's just, I mean, we just saw what happening in Washington. Their defense just held them to 24. Justin Herbert and Marcus Marriota, buddy. Okay. Needball sometime.
Starting point is 01:51:54 Those do smell delicious. They're fantastic. I do, like Greg. Hanging out with Greg Jennings here at the OT. Let's go to Jacksonville where the Jags just shut down Drake May and the Patriots. Two interceptions, a fumble loss for the Pats QB, trying to avoid that dreaded Super Bowl hangover. Not going well so far. This is Mike Vrable.
Starting point is 01:52:15 on his one and two Patriots. Take a listen. Well, my concern level is very high for this football team. I just want to coach and improve. So I think that's the biggest thing is when you come off a game like that, you just want to get back and work. There's nothing you can do about it. But we have to take care of football.
Starting point is 01:52:38 I mean, we can't force things. We can't do things in all three phases that, you know, end up getting you beat. So certainly we have to, you know, fix a lot of things. His concern level is very high. Very high, as it should be. So is it time to hit the panic button for the Pats? So initially I was like, no.
Starting point is 01:53:00 And now I'm like personally, from what I see, I want to hit the panic button, but I know they're not going to. Sure, and the team never will. But just through the prism of how we talk about it, Fans analysis. Yeah, the reason why I say yes right now is because when I look at Drake May, I don't see any resemblance of the guy that we saw last year, which is very concerning. And I'll give you kind of this thought process behind it.
Starting point is 01:53:30 When you go into the huddle, like, you're a bear's fan. You know what Caleb's been able to do. He plays with a level of confidence, especially when the game's on the line. You've seen it. You don't even have to be in the huddle. You see it. Yeah. Everybody feels it.
Starting point is 01:53:45 when you watch Drake May, what do you think they're getting in that huddle? Because you're watching it, you're seeing it too. The body language is not great. It doesn't match something of what we saw last year. That's what's most concerning. That's why I would say I'm smashing that panic button because I don't believe I'm in the huddle. If I'm in that huddle with the guy that actually, that is damning. That's a tough look.
Starting point is 01:54:10 And the postgame press conference is not exactly emanating confidence. Everything. It's on full display in every bit of the word. all the time. And when you're in a huddle with a quarterback that you've seen have success and he walks into that huddle and you're starting, you see that he's questioning himself or he just has, he doesn't come in that huddle with the presence, with a belief. I don't, I don't, I then too now don't begin to believe in that play, in the execution of that play. And so for that reason, I say yes. And then I'll show you the graphics of the numbers that they put up.
Starting point is 01:54:44 it is just based on. And again, I know everybody's going to say, well, their schedule last year was, it was light. Yeah. But his confidence and his ability to be explosive offensively, still, he was professional about his play. And it was awesome. This right here, last in offensive touchdowns, like, we don't see any type of productivity offensively. And third down, they can't sustain any drives. Red zone. It just all is bad and it all trickles down to one thing. Can my quarterback overcome what we're, what the issues that we possibly have? Well, what issues are they? Great. Well, our receiver went down. Okay, can I, my quarterback overcome that? Well, he hasn't.
Starting point is 01:55:34 Well, can we run the ball when the running back isn't available? You know what? We're going to shoulder with our quarterback's arm. He hasn't been able to do that. Can we sustain drives? can we protect the ball? You know what? Our quarterback hasn't been able to do that either. So yes, there is reasons of panic. Listen, if you think that your quarterback
Starting point is 01:55:52 is having a crisis of confidence that has carried over from last season when he didn't finish last season well and he's starting off this season like it's been a disaster, then yes, I would hit it too. And I think that that is totally fair because Patriots fans wanted to go back to the Super Bowl and now you're wondering if you have a franchise quarterback.
Starting point is 01:56:08 Like that is a dramatic drop in three regular season games. but the start that Drake May is off to this year is historically bad. It is historically bad, and we can put up the context to it, because you just did the team stats, and the team stats are overwhelming. But you have one or fewer touchdown in five or more turnovers in the first three games of a year. We're talking him and Cooper Rush this year, Luke McCown and Brady Quinn.
Starting point is 01:56:32 Those are the last four times that's happened, and you've got to go back over 15 years to find those guys. So this is a historically bad start to a season, and I can tell you this about Cooper Rush, Luke McCown, and Brady Quinn. None of them were MVP runner-up the year before they did it. So that's why this is so jarring and so disarming. They've had 30 offensive drives. They've had two touchdowns.
Starting point is 01:56:54 They've had 10 punts and eight turnovers and seven field goal attempts and three, end of half, end of game, just, you know, end of the time situations. It is a broken offense. And then the Jaguars just dominated them. Like shout out to Trevor Lawrence and Liam Cohn and their defense. I mean, New England has said we've played Seattle's D that's good, we've played Pittsburgh's D that's good,
Starting point is 01:57:16 and we played Jacksonville's D that's good. So that's the silver lining for New England, but they did not look like a team that deserved to be on the field with the Jaguar. The Jaguars dominated. And what's probably most alarming, again, and I'm going to go back to Drake is in those games, if we were to lay out their schedule, you would argue, okay, they got the better quarterback in all three of those games.
Starting point is 01:57:42 Or you would have thought going into the season based on what last year provided us. Oh, yeah, Drake Mays the better quarterback going into Sam Donald, just head to head. Yeah, of course. And all these games. And yet he's playing like one of the worst, if not the worst quarterback in all the football. Well, he played Aaron Rogers in week two. Let's head to Pittsburgh here as we talk about that Steelers and Bengals game. Big game in the AFC North, given the Bengals their first loss of the year.
Starting point is 01:58:09 Joe Burrow, Aaron Rogers, nearly identical stat lines. Steelers prevailed after that fumble lost on a sack on the Bengals' last drive. Shockingly, or not, Jamar Chase, not too worried. Take a listen. I feel good. I'm honestly, I'm all feel good. I feel good. It's not, don't feel good to lose, but I still feel good. I'll come. I just know what we got in his locker rooms. A lot of talented guys. A lot of talented group. So it's a long way to go. Can't let one game discourage us.
Starting point is 01:58:36 So there were a ton of ways that we could go here, Greg. But if the question is just the biggest takeaway, I will start here. The guy who you caught passes from looked pretty good. Man. Well, he, he looked pretty good. The efficiency I know is not where he would want to be. Like, he's never going to love 19 of 34. And you can speak to that better than I can.
Starting point is 01:58:56 Correct. Listen to enough of his interviews. But, like, last week against New England, I felt like he was not great, but he was let down. Like, D.K. had some bad drops or whatever. This game, Mike McCarthy was scheming guys open. I'm like, is this 2011 all over again? Like, guys were just running wide open. He's spreading the ball to all these different dudes.
Starting point is 01:59:17 The touchdowns were easy. Like, look at this. That is just why every play I'm watching, the Steelers have guys that are just wide open. I'm like, well, Aaron Rogers can complete passes to wide open players. Of course. So that was my biggest takeaway. And then I got plenty on CINC too, but just like, biggest thing, Aaron Rogers can complete passes to wide open guys. If Mike McCarthy can scheme guys wide open, they can still be kind of dangerous.
Starting point is 01:59:42 Yeah, you talk about the scheme. I thought that was refreshing to see that guys were running wide open. That's an indicator that you have something at advantage over the defense. You've done your job as an offense coordinator, a play caller, the scheme these guys open. That was great. What stood out even more than that was the willingness of Aaron to push the ball downfield. It's something that we've just come to know that he's not going to push the ball down the field anymore. Unless he has a jump ball situation or whatever.
Starting point is 02:00:11 but the impact that that has, with them pushing the ball downfield and actually having success, it then opens up everything. It gets the defense to soften up. Now everything that is on your play call and your play sheet as a play caller is available. Yeah. And I think because they run the ball well. Obviously, we know what their defense is. But if you are unwilling to press the ball down the field, you're only allowing a defense to. cover you and guard only so much of your offense.
Starting point is 02:00:44 So I thought that was the biggest takeaway. And they wanted in a shootout fashion and I don't think anybody had that on their bingo card. Every game is a new data point and why the NFL is great is every data point matters so much because it's just one of 17. But the first week for CINCESDefense, they get the four fumble recoveries.
Starting point is 02:01:00 And it was like, were those more giveaways or takeaways on Tampa? I thought they were more giveaways. Then the next game, Houston, it was nice to win a game where you only score 20 points and win by double digits. that happens very rarely for Joe Burrow in his history.
Starting point is 02:01:13 But a very nice defensive performance, but C.J. Stroud takes bad sacks. No Nico Collins. And no Nico Collins. This game, I was expecting Steelers' offense against Bengals' defense. I was expecting Bengals' defense to win, and they got shredded. So just like in my head, I'm filing that away as like, okay, I wonder if those first two games for CINC's defense were more circumstantial.
Starting point is 02:01:39 like Baker mistakes and no Nico Collins. So I wouldn't be too thrilled in Cincinnati about the state of their defense. Yeah, I wouldn't be too thrilled, but to touch on that really quickly, like it's not going to always look good. You're going to have moments where your defense doesn't look good or they don't perform well, and the other side of the ball has to help out. And in this moment, you have the ball in your possession, turnovers happen, and I know Joe Burrell's not trying to give the ball up,
Starting point is 02:02:05 but you've got to protect the ball and you've got to give yourself a chance. He would think so. Two-minute drill coming up. Brock Purdy should he be the favorite for MVP right now? This is next on the OT. All right, welcome back to the OT. Let's get to the two-minute drill. We begin with Brock Purdy and the Niners.
Starting point is 02:02:21 They're three and O, it was nearly 300 yards, four touchdowns from Brock. Greg, we will put two minutes on the clock. You go first. At this point, are you shocked by Brock Purdy's performance? I'm not necessarily shocked. I've just been overly impressed. Like, we've seen him play at a high level in this career,
Starting point is 02:02:39 but with a lot of help around him. I think why I'm most impressed, what's been most impressive to me is going into the season, there wasn't a lot of skill guys around him in that building that I felt like, oh yeah, they're going to be an awesome offense. But because of his play, because of him using his legs, because of his understanding of what they're trying to get done within that offense, he's made it work with whoever he has on the field.
Starting point is 02:03:05 That's interesting because, I mean, at the beginning of the year, I thought that he had it. I was just questioning whether or not it would be there from it at the end of you. It's like Kyle Shanahan's system with Christian McCaffrey, Mike Evans, and George Kittle. I just didn't know if they were going to be like the... Sure. Themselves. I mean, yeah.
Starting point is 02:03:20 George Kittle coming off the injury. Yeah, CMC coming off over 400 touches. Why I am still shocked by it, and I know Niners fans will see this and then they will get mad. That's fine. He is still so dominant that I don't know that anybody, including Brock Purdy, saw this coming. Three and no start to the year. 10 or more touchdowns, one or fewer turnovers. The last five times it's happened over the last 10 years.
Starting point is 02:03:45 It's Mahomes three times Russell Wilson and Brock Purdy. Mahomes is maybe the most talented player in the history of the sport. This is just a, it's not just a level of efficiency. It is a, he converts for touchdowns. Like, you know what I mean? Just down in the red zone, crazy efficient. Deep ball, crazy efficient. Throw another run, crazy accurate.
Starting point is 02:04:07 I am very impressed, and yes, do I think a lot of it is Kyle Shanahan? Of course, but at this point, that's not a knock, man, if you keep putting the ball in the back of the end zone. Yeah, it's funny you have him up there with Patrick Mahomes. It's just saying some. The numbers do. He makes those Patrick Mahomes type plays, not to compare them, but when he decides to run, it's very intentional and is very backbreaking to defenses. Only Mahomes does things like that. Yeah, and Brock Purdy.
Starting point is 02:04:34 Meanwhile, in Seattle. Sam Donald returned and the Seahawks lost their first game of the season to Marcus Marriota. I did not have that one. 379 yards and four touchdowns were good. The two interceptions, not so much. So the question is, is this loss in Donald's return a bad game or a bad sign? And I would say bad game. At some point they were going to lose.
Starting point is 02:04:59 I thought they were going to make a run at 21 straight, the Patriots record. They obviously didn't. Kudos to Washington, man. Marriota scored. The Seahawks turned the ball over way too much. Marriota did not settle for field goals. He also scored touchdowns. I thought this was the first game where they really felt the Kenneth Walker departure
Starting point is 02:05:18 and the fact that Charbonnet is still hurt. Judarian Price, their first round pick, gets a carry in the first quarter and has that terrible fumble. They don't give him another touch until the third quarter. So they were trailing. Some of that was game script, and I think some of it was punishment for the fumble. But they just, they didn't have a running. game at all. They're playing catch up the whole time. I don't think that's going to be the
Starting point is 02:05:40 norm for Seattle. Yeah, you don't want Sam Donald throwing the ball 45 times not to say that he can't do that. But I'm with you. I thought this was a bad game. Look, they're the Super Bowl champs. They're going to get everyone's best shot. You're talking about a commander's team that was 0 and 2 going into this matchup. Desperate. They were desperate. Playing at home in front of their fans with Marcus Marietta, like they felt good about what they wanted to put out there. And And they executed a game plan and they took advantage of some opportunities. So I thought this was just a bad game and I don't see them having these types of games. But it happens throughout the course of the season.
Starting point is 02:06:16 And I would just say on Washington's side, decent news, right? Like Jaden, whether you agree with it or not, some people think you should have the surgery. They're saying no surgery made me back sooner than expected. Sunny Stiles, I don't know how closely you watch this game. He looked unbelievable. He's going to be a problem. He looked like a future first team all pro. And so I thought that there was just enough there that was like, man, if they play that game 10 times,
Starting point is 02:06:40 I think Seattle wins eight or nine of them. And this was kind of an any given Sunday snowball effect situation. And Seattle will still be fine. But hey, we were just talking about the Niners at NFC West is going to be very, very tough. Let's go now to Kansas City as we continue on the two-minute drill here, where the Chiefs, well, they're the Chiefs. Just a ho-hum, 14-point victory over Miami. It was a fine game from Patrick Mahomes with the help of Kenneth Walker. Greg, two minutes on the clock here.
Starting point is 02:07:08 What did you make of Mahomes and the Chiefs' Day? It just feels scary. It doesn't look scary yet, Danny, but it's starting to feel scary because this is the team that with a running game, it just changes the game plan. It changes the playing field. That man right there, Travis Kelsey, looks like the old version of himself.
Starting point is 02:07:30 We don't even mention Xavier Worthy, why? They don't really need them. I mean, and I'm sure they would like him. They would like them. Yeah. They would like them. I'm sure they're like, okay, well, this is something that we could get going, but they don't have to. And that's why I say it feels scary because Patrick Mahomes, early in his career, big plays all the time.
Starting point is 02:07:51 Then after losing Tyreek, has to be methodical. Now you got the version of him that's doing both with being mindful of being in the pocket because of the injury. It just feels scary. It doesn't look scary yet, but it feels scary. Yeah, just chalk it up, right? They, like, it was just, you were a 10-point favorite. You won by 14, and you came out of that game not feeling like you played particularly well. I've had so many players tell me, like, the best thing is a win where we don't play well.
Starting point is 02:08:19 And the coaches will be like, because then we still get the win, but then we can coach the guys hard. Miami had a 17-play touchdown drive. 17-play touchdown drive against the Chiefs. Well, that was weird. You know, like, that's going to be good tape for Spag. to coach off of. They got stopped when they were in short and they were going to have to settle for a field goal,
Starting point is 02:08:40 but then there was the penalty on Miami that gave them the extra set of downs. That game felt close. It was close. But it felt like a few things were going the Chief's way and it could have gotten really dicey and it didn't. So they get Vegas.
Starting point is 02:08:55 We'll actually, me and Nick Wright and I are going to that game against the Raiders in Vegas. And then they get the buy week. So it's like for how weird their start of their season is, they're 3-0 in covering spreads and feeling pretty good about themselves. Yeah, as they should. And they're just getting started. They're just getting started.
Starting point is 02:09:10 And I believe you had them making the playoffs? I had them missing the playoffs. Thanks, Greg. Let's go to Buffalo here. Josh Allen. He didn't really put on the cape, didn't need to. The stat line from Josh shocked him at the podium afterwards. They don't normally only have 200 and four yards here.
Starting point is 02:09:26 You surprised, Greg, that the bills were able to win despite Josh's quiet game. Look, I thought it was impressive. I this is a team that we, the narrative surrounding this team is often, it's all about Josh Allen. If Josh Allen is great, this team is going to win. They're a hard team to beat. But I thought it showed if Josh Allen isn't on his best game and they can still have their constant, which is their running game and it remains to be their constant and find ways to win against a team that, you know, a lot of preseason talk was this team was going to be one of the better teams in all the football against a really good defense.
Starting point is 02:10:01 this was a notch in the cap. It was very impressive. I don't normally do a lot of analysis based on team of destiny, like tropes and narratives and stuff like that. But week one, week one, they beat Houston in that shootout, but the Texans just dropped the interception.
Starting point is 02:10:23 Yeah. It's right in their hand, just one of the best quarterbacks in football just drops the interception. Escape with a win. Week three. You get five turnovers. You get five turnovers and win to remain undefeated.
Starting point is 02:10:39 Like you won your game when your quarterback, who's arguably the best player in football, didn't play well. And you're 3-0. And the Patriots don't look like the Patriots, so looks like you're going to walk to an AFC East division title. Just the opening of the stadium. There's a lot of like, oh,
Starting point is 02:11:01 it's this is their year inevitability feel. Just getting that feeling. Now I picked them doing the Super Bowl before the year, so maybe I'm just trying to talk that take into existence. But a lot of this is their year feels for the Buffalo Bills. It's aligning right now with three weeks into. It's been a very nice start for the bills. Coming up, all good.
Starting point is 02:11:20 The Bears showed up at the stadium tonight. Case Keenom. We'll see what happens. Just over two hours from kickoff, Case Keenham gets the start. Tyson Bayesian. is active. You're seeing that the players are, in fact, going to attend tonight's game, which is a good sign. Any chance the Bears steal a win? I will say yes,
Starting point is 02:11:40 because Ben Johnson can get in his bag, Greg. Do not forget Black Friday Bears Eagles last year, over 280 yards rushing for the Bears. Now, did they run the ball last week against Minnesota? They did not. That's concerning, but any game with Ben Johnson, I give him a shot. Yeah, for me, it's about the running game. They're able to run the ball, and when you watch the Eagles, they've been giving up a lot in the run game in terms of their defense. But they find ways to win ugly. So I know it's going to be a close game, no matter who's playing quarterback.
Starting point is 02:12:13 It's at home. Case Keenham has played in enough games in his career, meaningful games. 66 starts. To where he can get some things done. Ben Johnson has never coached a game with a quarterback that's not the number one pick. Never with Becca. Tonight's the night to get a win. We'll see tomorrow.
