My friends, welcome. My name is Hank Smith. I am the host of a podcast called Follow Him,
and I'm here with my co-host, John, by the way. Hello, John.
Hi, Hank.
This is a segment we call Follow Him Favorites. We take the lesson for the week and just highlight
our favorite piece. The lesson this week, John, is on Doctrine and Covenants section 46, 47,
and 48. And what, John, by the way, is your follow him favorite in these sections?
Oh, thank you for asking. 46 probably is the longest of the three and just has some amazing stuff. A list of spiritual gifts. I'm so grateful the Lord just says, hey, let me tell you about all
these spiritual gifts instead of something like, hey, let me tell you all the different ways I can
curse you or something like that. It's here's a list of gifts that are available that I would
love to share with you for the benefit of the church. But there's a line in verse 15 that I'm
so thankful for. It talks about the Lord suiting his mercies according to the conditions of the
children of men, his mercies according to the conditions. i just i love teenagers you do too hank and there
are teens out there who are probably thinking oh i've got this problem i bet my grandpa never had
this problem i bet my dad never had this problem and you know what they had different conditions
heavenly father knows exactly what kind of world he sent you to and it is a rough world they never
had those kind of temptations that you
have to deal with. And the heavenly father and the savior will suit their mercies according to
your conditions. That's incredibly hopeful verse that, Hey, I know what kind of world I sent you
to. I know what you're going through and I have adjusted my mercy just for you. I'm so glad that's in there. That is my favorite
for today, Hank. Section 46, verse 15. That is such a crucial idea. The idea of I judge your
finish line also based on your starting line. Yeah. Right? We're running different races.
We've talked about Steven Robinson before in his book, Believing Christ. And he wrote another one called Following Christ.
And he talked about diving and judges giving different scores based on the degree of difficulty.
It wasn't just the dive.
It was, I'm going to do this dive, but that has a higher degree of difficulty.
We've been sent to a world with a different degree of difficulty.
I like that.
Than a pre-internet world. And the judge judges
accordingly. Thank you for that. That is beautiful. If someone comes in, you know,
with a mental illness, the Lord will adjust his mercies. If someone comes into an abusive home,
the Lord will adjust his mercies. I think that was, that is a crucial, crucial takeaway. My
follow him favor from is also from section 46 and it's verse nine. And since
we're on a theme here, this tells us how merciful the Lord is. He says, I'm giving you these
spiritual gifts to those who love me and keep all my commandments. And at that point I was like,
I don't keep all the commandments. I do love you, but I don't keep all the commandments. And then
this phrase that I think we can highlight and him or her that seeketh so to do, meaning the Lord
says, I'm going to bless all those who keep my commandments and those who really want to keep
my commandments, who are trying to keep my commandments. And I think it does fit what you
just talked about in verse 15 with the Lord suiting his mercies. So the Lord knows
your heart. The Lord knows that you're trying, right? I have a wonderful son who just says,
why do I make bad decisions, right? Why do I continually do this? And I said, well, we're
going to try again. We're going to try again. I know you really want to make good decisions,
and we're going to get to the point where you are going to make better decisions. It's going to take a little bit of practice, a little bit of work, but
cut yourself some slack because the Lord is. The Lord is saying, I'm with you.
Can I add to that, Hank? I'm thinking of the sacrament prayer that our boys say. I don't know
if your son is old enough now for that. Is he a priest yet? But that actually they say that they are willing and there's no period willing to take upon them the name of thy son and willing to always remember him and willing to keep his commandments when she has given it.
It doesn't say that they are able to do this.
Or they will.
Absolutely.
Without, you know, without mistake.
But we're going to just keep trying.
We are good to just keep trying.
And the Lord is so merciful. He says, well, come back next week. We'll do this sacrament again.
Oh, that is good. Love it. That's why repent is the most wonderful word.
Encouraging word in the whole Christian vocabulary. Absolutely. Well, my friends,
John and I hope you'll join us on our podcast. It's called Follow Him and you can find it wherever
