How many times a day do you see or read or hear the phrase get in the bunker? Not very much anymore, honestly. It's probably the only time I really hear it or read it anymore is just a joke with my friends or my friends will say to me like if we're out playing every once in a while. I mean, I probably not even remotely close as many times as you guys think. Yeah, because I remember you kind of

you kind of squashed it a little bit. I think you jumped on like the, but one of the bars still counts and kind of made a little quip at yourself. So I think they kind of squashed it a little bit. Yeah, yeah, it was like, obviously it was it was something I realized

when it happened. And I mean, every time I hear, like see the video, not that I've watched it very often, but I've seen it enough to know that I sounded like a total idiot. I mean,

I didn't even like, throw that guy out like in a cool way. I just sounded like such a loser. Just like, come on. If you're going to throw the guy out, at least put the nervous and make yourself sound cool. But now I, yeah, it just was something that tournament gets pretty

rowdy and man, those last couple holes are tough and trying to win a golf tournament and it just was a couple I'd heard that dude a couple times and it just was, I guess it finally just got to me. And yeah, I thought it after the false dog that never reacted.

You know, at the end of the day, at least I won the golf tournament. So that made it feel a little bit better. Yeah, it's a weird thing because, you know, obviously you won the tournament. And when you win a golf tournament, you know as much as anybody how hard it is to win on tour. You win something like the Honda Classic, which is a pretty big event. And all anybody wanted to talk about afterwards was that whole event. We were part of that crowd. We came in.

I mean, that was first, just to be very open and transparent. I mean, that was when we first started hammering you. Pretty good was from that event was the whole, the guy on 16 went to get. the bunker. I guess from our vantage point, all that was picked up on that was the guy saying get in the bunker, you saying who was that, and then the famous line, enjoy your day, buddy, you're gone, which is a hilarious line. Yeah, I think he's underselling. I thought you threw the guy out pretty well. That's not bad. That's pretty good. Yeah, I mean, calling him buddy, like, who do I think I am? Like, do I run the world or something? Like, he calls, he's a little man of guy buddy after you just

throw him out of the tournament. So it's just a guy. It literally just makes my skin crawl. every time I said. I'm like, you're such a loser, man. That's so brutal. Yeah, so, you know, you kind of came out. You apologized the next day, and we don't want to hammer on it too much. But like I said, we came out pretty hard on you. Looking back on that, I mean, was the guy, was there more to it?

Because if there was, part of me thinks, like, why the fuck is J.T. apologizing? If the guy was an asshole and deserves to be kicked out, there is a threshold where if you're going above and beyond, I think it was Rory, who at the, at, Bay Hill had somebody hackling about his wife or fiance. That's totally fair. Get that guy out of here. Screw that guy.

Whereas yours, like I said, with the apology and that, I just, I think it's important people to understand that there is a threshold of the guy deserved it fine. If not, no. Where a lot of us had the issue was like, is JT just apologizing because he wants people, he cares and is looking at the reaction? Or is he actually like, man, that was a bad move. I am soft as shit. Like, I guess that's kind of where part of the confusion was.

Yeah, and that's another part that, I mean, I guess you can look at it as a positive or negative however you want, but like that's just how things are nowadays. Like, you could get, you could be the most perfect person in the world and people are going to find shit and not like you. It's just the way that it is. You know what I mean? And it was like, and that was another thing. Everybody thought, oh, look, the media team is making them do this, this and that. And I mean, my age literally told me to do nothing to that. It was just like, I woke up the next day and I was like, I just wanted.

a massive golf tournament. Probably one of the biggest wins, obviously the PGA was the PGA, but in terms of dealing with adversity and, like, I mean, a really hard golf course and burning the last hole to get into a playoff and then burning the first playoff. Like, that was a really hard win, and I'm like, I woke up the next morning and I'm like, all I can think about is just a stupid thing I did. And, like, it's all I keep hearing about when, like you said, that's all people could talk about.

It bothered me. It really did. And I was just, you know, I just wanted to say, I apologize. for the fact of, look, that's not what I want people to know me as. I mean, that's just ridiculous. And I, again, like I said, I overreacted, and I shouldn't have done that. It was just kind of like a heat of the moment thing. But obviously, in the heat of the moment when you're in 25th,

and every shot that you hit is on camera, nobody knows. But when you're top of the lead in three holes, I go into the Honda Classic, and every shot you hit is on TV, then you look like an idiot, and people are going to call you out on it. So, I mean, you know, I guess I could say I deserve it, or it is what it is. You know, at the end of the day, if that's the worst thing that I do or people are just liking for that, then it is what it is.

But, you know, it shit happens. And I definitely have reacted. But hopefully it's all past. So the other thing in the Honda Classic, which I feel like you just couldn't get away from this turn, you drop a big old fuck yeah after winning the Honda. It gets picked up on the mics, which in reality is just not that big of a deal at all. Obviously, you're going to be excited. You just won a huge tournament.

You already talked about how important that was. Golf.com recently published these complaints from people that they filed to the FCC. Oh, my God. These are outrageous. And three of the nine complaints filed are over your F bomb. One viewer wrote, I'm hoping that CBS will be disciplined for airing professional golfers yelling FUCK during live coverage in front of young sports fans. Huge fines should be enforced. Do you feel ashamed, J.T?

No, not at all. I mean, if I'm going to say it, it's one thing if I'm saying it in frustration. I mean, look, like I'm the first person that's going to get on board with being a role model to kids, players, whatever you want to be. I mean, I do take that very, very seriously. And, you know, I want to grow the game in any way I can. But it's like I told the tour, it's like I told people. I'm like, look, I just won a huge tournament. You know, look at other athletes.

I'm not going to name names because I already screwed up and trying to compare it. myself and athlete. Look at other athletes that do something major in their sport, whether it's a Super Bowl or a big game or whatever it is. And I mean, the camera's right on them. You can read their lips. It's just the fact of the matter is we literally have mics on the edge of the greens, which if you ask me, I don't think it's a very smart idea for that reason.

But it's like, look, I just want a big tournament. And the fact that they replayed it four or five times, that's not on me. That's on them. I only said it once. I didn't say it four or five times. So the fact that I got replayed that many times, yeah, that didn't exactly have the best look. But I don't know. In terms of showing excitement and emotion for something good that happened, I mean, I'm not going to apologize for that.

But, yeah, I guess in retrospect, financially, I probably could have chose a different one. You can't apologize. I remember that being a tough one for me because I'll be the first to admit. I've given you most of the heat on Twitter and all this stuff on social media. So I'm glad that you said you don't really read it because I actually. I'm starting to feel bad at some of this stuff I'm writing on the internet. Frank you earlier was like, man, I've spent some shit to that guy. Fuck.

But, you know, it all stem from with the fan thing. I'm like, you know, this guy's 25 years old. He's my age. Like, like, what Riggs just said, like, he should be one of the guys that, like, I should want to be like your best friend. I shouldn't want to be like, fuck. What is Justin Thomas doing out there? Why is he being such, like, a dick on the golf course?

And then I saw you do the fuck yeah. And I was like, well, fuck, I love that. Like, that's what I do with my friends when I'm playing at, like, the local golf course. I'm like, fuck, yeah. That's what you should be doing. Right. So to me, Hold on.

But that implies that you're making puss to win tournament. That's tough that doesn't happen with you. Right. That's true. That's very true. Yeah, I'm not winning anything, literally. Every time Frankie...

Every time Frankie says something, he's going to get potty. I mean, yeah. I'm just like, I like everyone that comes on the show, just Barry's Frankie. That's like the new... That's just the M.O.

It's a fact that I'm not putting to win tournaments. Let's just put that out there. Like, Justin Thomas is not LeBron James. I'm not winning, you know, the Honda class. That's a fact. What was that first tea shot like at the Rider Cup this year? Nothing compares to that.

Nothing at all. I just tell everyone, so when I hit my five-load off the T, or off of the T-box, I don't use a T, I just kind of put a little dent in the ground, and I put it on the grass just because I'm able to put it lower and flight it better. And I just tell everybody that if I had to use the T, I probably wouldn't have been able to get the ball in the T. I mean

Kind of an unreal flex So you're just like I go five wood off the deck on the tee Yeah you know that thing that like everyone does They put a tee down in the grass I just like don't do that I just don't need And I'm like the most nerve record shot in my career

I just do it So it's that intense It's that different Because we hear it all time And it really is especially I mean I was out there And it was I've never seen anything like that before I know it was your first writer cup

but the nerve levels were really that different, huh? It is. It's just, man, I mean, I'm getting goosebumps talking about it. It's the coolest thing ever. Just the fact that you know you're playing for your country and everybody at home is watching you. Because, you know, they show every single shot. It's not like some tournaments where it will show the good ones.

It's like, no, they're going to show all of them. The bad ones, anytime you screw up, you screwed up for your country, basically. And it's like, that's not me. You know, I love team golf and playing for America more than anything. And I'm like, man, this is just, it's a lot of pressure, but at the same time, I kind of get it as a chance to, you know, show the world what I can do. And it's just, it's so fun. It's kind of, it's obviously, I'm having a hard time putting it into words, but it's, uh, the only thing that could have made it better is if we wouldn't want. How were you able to deliver when the rest of the team basically, you know, sucked?

I mean, they struggle. You know, the thing is, you just got to go out and you've got to do your job. You've got to go out and get points that you can. Although you're worried and looking at your team, you're out there just trying to take care of your match and take care of your shot, take care of whatever you can do because you can't do anything about those other matches. So, yeah, we got off to a hot start,

and then after that, obviously, didn't do the best, but it is, what it is. We'll get them in two years. I like that. How memorable was your win in the singles against Rory? It was great. It was actually funny. I was him and I. I belong to two clubs down here in Florida, and Bears Club. It was one of them that he belongs to as well. And we were both out hitting balls the other day, and I was hitting drivers.

And he just was kind of standing there and watched he hit a couple. And he was just like, how good is that drive you hit down 18 against me on Sunday? And I was like, yeah, I mean, I don't really know what to say. because you kind of plugged it in the bunker, but I guess it was pretty good. It was because Rory is, I mean, for anybody that knows him, he's truly one of the nicest guys, and he's always been someone that as soon as I turned pro,

as soon as I moved down here to Florida, he treated me like I'd been out on tour for 10 years. So I told him that when I shook his hand after the match was over. I'm like, dude, like, you've been so great to me. I've looked out to you for a long time. Like, getting thrown out in the first. match of the Ryder Cup on Sunday is a huge deal. And for me to get down against him and to somehow get through to beat him was, it's crazy

that sounds as well, it was one of my best accomplishments. So it was pretty cool. So earlier this fall in Korea, you're 353-yard par four. You hit a three-wood off the tee at nine bridges and said, go in right away. Did you really think that was going in? So it's funny to bring that up. Brooks and I have a little kind of an ongoing bet over the course of the year. And a double eagle is something that is on that list.

And I was playing with Brooks. And it was such a long wait. And like the whole time, like Brooks, dude, I'm going to make this. I'm like, I'm going to make this shot. He's like, okay. And we're just kind of messing around. I wasn't playing that great. And I hit it.

And, I mean, I absolutely flagged it. Like I was talking the shout out to Jimmy. I was being such a douche. I'm like, I'm going to hit like this little low cut. It's going to hit that down slope, just short, and it's going to run up, and it's going to go in. And as soon as I hit it, it comes out like that, Brooks was like, oh, my gosh. And I'm just like, go in, go in, please go in.

So everybody that obviously saw it is like, this guy is such a pool, and he's telling us where you're going from 350 yards, but Brooks got a pretty good laugh out of it. Every guest that comes on here that I have, like, that I, like, tweet at, always eight miles himself. And they always just tell me, word for word, that's what I was going to say. Like, you came off like such a, oh, go in from 350 yards away. Okay, JT. Then there's a good story behind it.

There's an amazing story behind it. For real. Before we came on here, Frank was like, I got the sledgehammer. I'm going to give him this one. And then you just did it. I just in my seat. I'm like, oh, I'm just a nobody now. Suck it's crazy.

I just can't say anything. This is insane. That's an amazing story. That is a really good story. That is so who, nobody got one? Or did, no, Brooks didn't get one last year? No. No. Well, it's through this year, so we have the entire year.

So from now on, if you guys hear me yelling, I'll have to have my ball, or if you see me telling my ball to go in from 250 yards plus, you don't have to think I'm as big of a douche. Well, JT, I know we kept you a little while, but like I said at the beginning, man, we've given you a really hard time. So for you to take your time a couple days before Christmas and come in here into the Lions Den a little bit and chat with us. us. It means a lot. It's very cool. We appreciate it. This guy, actually, he's legitimately worth looking up on Twitter because if you want to look at a, a crazy Alabama fan. This guy, Hunter L. Johnson, Hunter Johnson is his name, and he's a buddy of mine, a buddy of a bunch of ours. And he is, like I said, a crazy Alabama athletic fan. And we just have a name, and he always tweeted like that.

He would say, you know, like, it didn't matter what he said. He would say something that would just put comment you guys. And I'll, we just thought it was the funniest thing ever because, like you said, it's like, why is he doing this? Yeah. So every single Alabama football. game, I put happy game day you guys. Oh man, see

all these stories got the story to back it up. You know, the Brooke story, this story now. I know, you know, it's tough to come on here, especially when we give you a lot of shit. I mean, we gave you a lot of shit, you can look it up on bars, so like we've written your name a million times. But to come on here and actually talk to us, it's a huge step to like, I still, I still just like respect you now, you know what I mean? Like, after talking on, I can respect Justin Thomas. And that's like really all you can ask for out of like, you know, fans, really. Yeah.

I appreciate that. I'll take the respect. Yeah, and our guy, Jake, who's our producer, who's an Alabama guy, he was over there, nodding his head and screaming behind the head, like he knows what the you guys thing is, so that story checks out. We've had him on before, actually, Ryder, or President's Cup a couple years ago with a couple other guys. Now we get him alone, basically because he's bored from injury and has nothing else to do. So, Chappie, what's up? and you stole my material already Yeah We had kind of a trend of we eight There's a lot of eight-miling that goes on here

People steal each other's material and all that kind of The first time we met Kevin We went to the stage of S&L And took a picture in front of it It was like what a strange first time to meet him Forgot about that Yeah we kind of have a sick picture together Yeah I mean you guys seem more into it than I was

Not really a S&L history bus But you know it's always good to experience a bucket list item with other people. You're like, yeah, what is this? You want me to go over here? Yeah, sure, I'll take a picture here. That's fine. Wait, this show airs at what time?

I'm usually not sober then, so I don't remember that. But it's nice to have you back on. So you had, I think it's like a little over a month ago, you had your micro dissectomy surgery, which I shout out to me for saying that, I think correctly. Are you kidding me? That was insane. You should not even reading anything. He goes, hold on.

What are you going to chime in? there? No, you did it right. I asked for the fusion. They wouldn't give me a fusion. So now you're stealing our material. We're going to chirp you hard, be like, what are you wasting everybody's time for years? That was like the one thing I was going to contribute to the podcast. I was like, hey man, like, I'm kind of a fan. I don't really know much about you, but why the fuck didn't you get a fusion? Like, what's going on? And then you just say it. Let's just redo that. I mean, as you know that Tiger Woods is next level. I mean, that surgery is next level. I'm not quite there yet.

True. Do you have to have a certain pedigree to get the fusion surgery? Interesting. Do you have to be a certain type of? You have to be that fucked up to get the fusion surgery. Let's go back to the surgery. Describe the decision to have the surgery, what led up to it, what it was like all year long, and then ultimately you'd be like, okay, I need to do this surgery that's going to make me essentially paralyzed for a couple weeks.

So I've had back issues for like five years that, and the issues have consisted of like I'll have a flare. what I call a flare-up, and my sciatic nerve will be real painful. I won't be able to bend or twist. My spine will go out of alignment. And they typically only lasted, you know, three to ten days. And I, you know, get some PT done, see your chiropractic, see a massage therapist, and it would all kind of fix itself. Well, starting in about April of this year, I withdrew from the match play after one

and a half matches. And just because I didn't want it to be all messed up for the Masters, and I just really never got healthy. I had this lingering sciatic nerve pain discomfort. And so this offseason, I had a plan to try and fix that. I was going to go get stem cell done in my bag to help regenerate that area, try and get it healthier. And so I had my team on my daily updates.

You know, I'd tell them how I slept, what the plan was for the day, how I was feeling. And, you know, I get responses from them, you know, hey, try this, do this. You know, don't work out today. It sounds like you slept terrible, whatever. And so one day I send my audio message. And, you know, I'm very condescending and sending these auto messages because they're having me do just some of the craziest stuff, you know, take this supplement, do this

at this time, do this. And I'm like, all right, guys, I'm all in. I'm going to get better. So I'm going to do it. But I would always talk to them very condescendingly. So I send this message, I get a call immediately for my doctor. And he's like, okay, you have no feeling in your foot or your leg today. Basically, the next thing that could happen is you can lose control your bowel movements.

You in for that? And I'm like, no, that's kind of where I draw the line. And so he's like, I think we've got to get surgery. And so it was, you know, at that point, it was about quality of life and being able to live, you know, play with my kids why I want to. and be as active as I want to. So I just got to work on researching doctors that did the surgery that I needed, the microdicectomy. I actually reached out to Tiger.

He gave me the name of the guy that did his, and he's been really supportive of it. And ultimately, I ended up finding a guy in Scottsdale that has kind of revamped the microdicectomy surgery. And a typical doctor has an 80% success rate on the surgery, and this guy has 100% success rate due to some like alterations in the surgery so I went with him and um so far so good 100% that's pretty high yeah I'm gonna go with that one yeah I'm gonna go with the hundred did tiger respond just like fusion is that what he said no he was he was great it was actually interesting he didn't give me the name of his doctors that did his microdicectomy um he gave me

the name of the doctor that ultimately did his last surgery um and uh you know I I reached out um to that surgery center and had a consult with them but ended up, you know, staying more local. How many times when I was inside the ropes in the practice round with you and kids at Shinnock, would you guess I was just generally in the way? Austin. It really made me question your golfing ability because, you know, you would be throwing balls for kids or someone like, hey, go hit this shot. And then you'd be recording and then you'd be like, oh, the flags are. over here and be on a 10 degree left to right slope and you'd be standing where we had to land it.

I'm like, well, I wonder how he would play this shot. There was one point on the eighth green, I think, where Kevin's in the bunker. And I'm like, stand in the middle of green, my phone out, like video and something. He's just like, hey, Reg's like, is it cool if I just hit a bunker shot here? You're just not in the way. I was like, oh, yeah, that's probably a good point. So it was a little bit of a couple mistakes. Well, eye opening for you like, oh, maybe I don't know this course.

Well, at the very beginning, I was very cautious. Like, what am I doing here? And then I started to take a couple more liberties. And like I said, like, by the seventh, eighth hole, I'm just walking in the middle of the green while these guys are trying to get ready for the U.S. open. I think you were holding kids as potter and one-handed pots and stuff, weren't you? Oh, yeah. So I told the U.S.GA guys that afterwards, and they were like, don't ever do that ever again. Does kids always chirp you as much as he was then during every practice round?

Yeah, kids and I are really good for each other socially and probably bad for each other on the golf course. Just because you got to outchirp the other guy and then you forget what you're doing. But we are very like-minded and our wives are like-minded so we spend a lot of time together. Yeah, is kids kind of your number one practice round partner? Yeah, he's a good one. Me, kids and Charlie, we play a lot of practice rounds together. and we find it for us. And, you know, some order of that will be teams.

And I don't know. I can't tell if it's better to have kids on your team or not on your team so you can chirp at him. Yeah, he, he too, he was telling me, he was like yesterday, Riggs, I think I, he's like, I think I've hit, I think I lost the ball in the first, like, seven holes. And then today, the day that I was inside the ropes, he was lights out. Yeah. So you never know.

That's a game of golf, man. So, President's Cup, like I mentioned, 2017, how different was that from anything else you'd ever experienced? Yeah, I mean, the atmosphere is phenomenal. And to be on that team, you know, for me was awesome, you know, and to earn it the way I did, you know, having to basically not peek on myself coming down the stretch in Boston. And, you know, I still managed to spit up a little bit. But I was able to win or get that last spot was, you know, to do. to earn it was great because that team, as you guys know, would be like playing on the Golden State Warriors.

I was just trying to find my playing time. And, you know, it was fun to Charlie and I played that second day and to get to not have to experience the nerves. You know, the first day was a bummer, but also probably a blessing in disguise because, you know, we get to watch guys, you know, have a successful first day. And then, you know, Charlie and I kind of just fell into the mix and we're able to get a pretty dominant win,

I guess on Friday and then Saturday afternoon was a bummer to not clinch the final point but you know just the whole experience was phenomenal yeah what was the what was the scene like on Sunday night with that crew would get a little get a little wild did you guys watch the press conference

I did press conference was a shit show I mean that that was just the intro to the night but yeah that was fun The fight the next day was not that fun. I'll tell you that. That's kind of how it goes.

Kevin Chappell, recovering about a month into his microdicectomy, surgery, recovery. You got a couple more months to go. You should have seen the look. Like, we didn't even talk to each other when we came in. We just, like, slugged our way in, sat down at the desk, and we're like fucking Kisner. So I assume you're really fired up for the U.S. Open at Pebble this year.

Yeah, I heard they made number nine, 310 to the top of the hill. Can't wait for that. 3.10? Yeah, there is. So whenever I've played there, we try to play, we play like the blues. which is as far back as they'll allow you to play then.

And there's a good T-box, like, 70 yards behind that, I feel like. Yeah, the guy I played with in one of my days at the program last weekend, Palm Springs, lives there. Said it's the new T-L-9 is 3-10 to the top of the hill. So that means you're going to have 220 in to a green that's built for a sandwich. So you're fired up for it. You can't wait. That's the only if you can hit it 3-10. I can't hit it 3-10.

So I'm going to have $2.50. No, it's always a comical week to see how bad they can screw it up. I love to get it. It's very funny because I'm pretty close to a lot of the USDA guys, so I get their side of it. And then when they get the players, we get their side. And then you get kids who just clearly, it was great because we played when we were in the practice round last year on Wednesday.

Inside the Ropes Rigs. That was me, inside the Ropes Rigs with Kevin Chappell. We had a couple weeks ago. and kids just jumping in the bunkers and just before he even hits it, just starts chirping the sand before he even hits him on. Being like, the sand's just a crap shoot out here. I hate the sand. Who else do we play with?

It was Luke List. Striper. Oh, he was miles past you. Dude, how far does he hit it? You know, he just moved to Augusta. I play with him all the time now. Really? He's a good, he was a good, too.

He was a little quiet. Yeah, he's quiet. I also, my biggest takeaway from that round was that Kiz just ruthlessly chirped Chapel for his, like, analytical guru guy that he had with him. Yeah. You still got that guy? Yeah. Everybody does.

He makes big, bold statements like, you have to birdie the par fives on this golf course. No shit, artsy. The par threes are really hard here. $1 are a good score. Thank you. This is this guy who chap, and I guess a bunch of other guys employed, who brings this, like, statistical, analytical approach to their strategy

and helps them kind of plan out where they're, you know, where they should be focusing on missing and which sides of greens to air on this and that. In the entire nine holes that we played in the Bradshaw, kids just chirp this guy to his face. Yeah, I always say kids feels more like a feel guy, not a numbers guy. It was unbelievable. Well, they act like golfs of fucking video game. I mean, if I knew where I was going to hit it every time,

the last thing I need to know is something from you. It was great. It was like that for basically two and a half hours straight. It was awesome. Oh, yeah. He was out last week and the week before. He got like seven or eight players. He's building up a little stable there.

Yeah, he's rich. So now let's get to the PGA. Another great showing. leading through the first half of the tourney. At first I want to hear you talk about how awesome these St. Louis fans were. I'm a St. Louis guy. St. Louis is sweet. Although it's hot as hell, wasn't it?

Oh, it is hot. Our summers suck, but we're not talking about that. But it was packed out there, man. There was a ton of people, and Saturday was getting rowdy. I think I was in the last group on Saturday. It was wild out there. A lot of rigs, brethren, just wasted walking around. Oh, yeah.

That's pretty accurate, my brethren. You didn't know I had that big of vocabulary, did you? No, I don't. Did you Google that before we came on? But then, how I was, you know, getting called to the freaking podium for one fucking person. And who was that? Fugging ring. Well, I mean.

And you believe that, Trent? I'm like, media. No, I'm not doing media. He's like, yeah, one request. I'm like, who is it? He goes, I don't know. Some clown from. bar stool.

I mean, kids, you're leading the golf tournament and nobody wanted to talk at a major championship. Nobody wanted to talk to you, but me, I mean, you're welcome. That's a man who's been smart about his media over his career. People are like, this guy's leading the tournament, they still don't want to talk to him. Exactly. They know they're getting nothing from me. I mean, again, you're leading the major championship.

But anyways. What day was it that guy was just killing you? Oh, my God. That was, so I think it was. Thursday that I did that I did the one-on-one with you and nobody really cared and then Friday you continued to play well the whole world was just stunned and you're like leading the golf

tournament and so it's packed all of a sudden and I kept trying to get questions in and this fucking clown over to my right every time I because you know I mean there's 20 media people around and I you got to like really jump in there I'm like kids and then I would start my question and the guy just dominated me and just asked his question

just owned it and I wouldn't even answer his question I just look at rigs and start dying He just laughed. It looked at me and laughed, and then just was like, what'd you ask again to the other guy? So I did get dominated in the media. I got to get better at that. A lot of the course architecture geeks kids were chirping on Bel-Reeve or Bel-Lu, as Frankie calls it.

Correct. What did you think of the golf course? You know, I didn't think it was that bad. I thought unfortunate the conditions we had to play it in because it was so hot that it was soft and wet. Was it major championship worthy? Not sure that it was close. white on that level, but overall, I thought the place played well for what they were handed, you know, 100-degree weather and bent grass did not connect very well.

Yeah, it didn't, it didn't. It was a bummer because, like you said, I think the course can present even better than it did, but it provided a good golf tournament, so I don't think that it's getting, I don't know that it deserves a lot of the negativity that it's received. But anyways, thinking of golf courses, how do you feel about the major championship? championship venues this year, Augusta, Beth, Page, Pabell, and Royal Port Rush. Everybody's going to be brutal for me with how long they've made the golf course. I played it a few weeks ago, and they've changed number five to $4.95, so that adds another bogey for me.

But, you know, if we could ever get perfect conditions at Augusta where the fairways were running like they used to, and you remember watching like Greg Norman days, he would pound driver and run 40 yards in the fairways. Now they mow the fairways back into you. The ball doesn't chase as far. So they're handing it more to the bombers, but it's all good. If you get hot with the putter and hit it really good, you can still compete as a younger, I mean, as a shorter hitter. TGA, Beth Page, got no chance there.

Hebel, I could play decent if the USDA wasn't running it, and I got no idea about Ireland. Love it. Sounds like we're ready to rock. How do you like my honesty? That was great. That's what we want. That's honestly, that's exactly what I was looking for. Just 0 for 4, probably.

It's incredible. And then I'll probably be in the last group on one of those, and you'll be texting me like, what the fuck, kids? I didn't have a chance. I will. I'm trying to figure out where to put my money, and you're like, I got no chance at any of these golf courses, basically. So when we talk to Justin Thomas, he's like, you know what?

Best page in May, are you kidding me? It could be 47 degrees in the golf. course is 8,000 yards long, and I got to listen to Yankee assholes scream at me the whole time. That's Frankie, literally Frankie. You're going to come to that one, Frankie? I'll be in your ear. You're kidding me? I'm going to be like, I'm going to be talking about Gabagoole and Bakeman of gut right in your ear.

You're not going to be able to hear anything but the Long Island accent. That's all you're going to hear. My catty's from fucking East Hampton, bro. That's all I listened to for nine years. Okay, there you go. So funny, though, I was just saying, we talked to Justin Thomas. We're like, what are your goals? He's like, I don't want to say them.

He was so tight to himself. All of a sudden, kids is like, yeah, I got no chance at Bethpage. It's like one of the most, that's just like the common man answer right there. It's perfect. Like, Beth Page is 8,000 yards long. Do you think I have any chance? I mean, top 40 player in the world. That's amazing.

Yeah, but you can... World Fuzball champion, the Teddy Scott. So the two of you, you guys have been a team for a long time now. There's been a long, for a while now, several years now, there's been a little corner of the internet, the RIP or the pray for Ted Scott thing. What's your guys relationship like in real life versus the internet's.

Well, first of all, I think it's awesome because I think we should all pray for everybody, right? We all need help. We're all nuts. Yeah. Let's be honest. If you're around golf, you're nuts. Right. So we should pray for everybody.

I wish they'd start praying for me because I would like to make some more putts. But no, it's funny. I mean, that's the thing, right? Right? The Internet now is, in social media now, we can do things like that. Our friendship is so tight. Our family's love is so tight that those silly things aren't going to affect us. Well, not me anyway.

I still write checks, and he still catches them. It works out good. Exactly. Which is nice. Yeah, I mean, we talk. Friends with benefits, you know. What? So, now you take your take on it.

Yeah, well, you know, I think that, that's right. Definitely involved. No, give your take, but, hold up. Let me, let me, let's see. It says, look up and smile. I love him. He's great. Get my notes together. No, I mean, we have a great relationship.

Bubba and I get along really well. And, you know, there's moments of tension under pressure. Right. And you can look at that and say it's this or you can look at that and say that. But the bottom line is it doesn't really matter what everybody else thinks. It only matters what we say and our close friends. You know, we always talk about if you don't know someone and they criticize you, they really don't know you. So is it really something to listen to?

But when you actually have someone in your corner who knows, you and criticize you, then you might want to listen. So we try to listen to that small chatter out there and just try to listen to our close family and friends and our team because they really know our true flaws and know what we really need to work on, and that's how we try to keep it and get better at our relationship and golf and all that. So, yeah, so, I mean, for a guy like me, like, I've been critical at times and I just come from it from a vantage point of an average fan.

I'm watching the golf, and sometimes it looks like, wow, Bubba's being hard on Ted Scott. Wow, he must like, he looks disrespectful. is he berating his caddy? Like, where do we get it wrong in that, in that regard? I'll speak up on this. I got it. I got, oh, you know, I can talk for days. For what I learned today. You go first. You go first. You're a very animated, right? Right. So he's a very animated person.

Oh, yeah. Right. He's a very animated person. And you go play with him for fun. You see it, like, you know, all the fun. Absolutely. Woo. Every shot's got a little common or a little something or a little, you know. And so what happens under pressure? He's out there and the spotlight's on him and he misses a put. It's like, oh, that ball broke left or did this. And people are taking. And people are taking, can you believe that, Teddy, him talking to me and maybe taking his mannerisms, not knowing what he's saying, not knowing what the context is. And then you can write whatever story you want to write. And as we know in the media, the small little story sometimes can get blown up because everybody loves a villain, everybody loves a negative story.

What? They do. Believe it or not, they do. Positive doesn't sell anymore? Right. So I think that's the real problem with it is that we look at it and say, oh, he's doing this, he's doing that, we assume. But nobody really goes and hangs out and says, well, and most of the time when they do, they find it. out, wow, that Bubba Watson's a really good guy, you know.

Yeah. And I've had to know now. Right. And we just played eight two holes together. Right. No, he was telling me. He's got a little pressure on you. Yeah, they all do. So wait, my take on it, though. Yeah, let's go. So my take, when I say Teddy, like after a shot or after a putt, I'm just making sure he knows I'm talking to him. Like Teddy, I can't believe it broke that way or I can't believe it did this. And like today, we hit a couple extra puts because one putt on number nine, your putt went. this way. Mine went this way at the hole. So it's like, Teddy, why did it do that? So I just say, if there's a group with three pros and three caddies, hey, Teddy, so everybody knows I'm talking

to him, not them, right? So they don't stop, because I'm not going to want to interrupt them while they're trying to make a living as well. You know, I win a trophy. Right. And so for me, it's just, I say, hey, Teddy. It's not like, hey, Teddy, which I am sometimes. Well, a lot, whatever. Well, two times. Right, two times. Once, when I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken. Well, whoa, whoa, what were these two times? Weird, huh? But at the same time, your question, though, was funny to me because the way I, your question, I mean, there's only a handful of times. When I say a handful of times, I bet you came a count of three times in the 13 years we've been together. You asked the question about, right?

Right. But we always take the negative, and when there's a thousand great post about me on social media, I remember the bad one, right? Right. So the thousand great comments, I still focus on the negative one, you know. Yeah, and it's hard on. Right. Yeah, and it was interesting for me today because even, you know, we're playing golf and when a putt would just break and peel off and just miss the hole, you would do the same exact thing I watch on TV, which you kind of look at Teddy. But I could tell very clearly in that sense it was much more of like, Teddy, could you believe that rather than Teddy, you made that miss or something like that.

Right. I didn't know your name. So on nine, I just knew that you putted it to the left and my image was right. I said, hey, you, hey, you, that putt went that way. My name's Riggs. Right, perfect. There you go. Okay, everybody is Riggs? Yeah. I'm Riggs, Barcelona Sports. Nice to be here. Brinkled shirt. Bubba did shirt my shirt.

But we came to an agreement that this is a single guy's shirt and you guys all have nice iron shirts. Right, exactly. I get paid to iron it. So 2012 Masters, was there any point early on in the week before Sunday where you thought this might be a different week? No, I was playing well, right? Obviously I was playing well going up into it.

I think I just came off of fourth at Bay Hill, I think a second or somewhere, around third or Dural. And then we adopt our son, Caleb. And so really getting there was, golf was in the back of my mind, but it was more like us playing today. It was just free, who cares, way, you know, great job. And so I was never focused, and the media wasn't focused on me, right? Focused on it leading up, but I, you know, talking about my. my child talking about Caleb and about how great it is to be a dad and I can't wait to get home. So it was never about golf. It wasn't about, oh, man, you three putter. You made a bogey. Or you made a

birdie. Wow, you're top ten. I was, I was never focused on that. And Phil was in the final group, so you know the story was on him, right? Yep. Right. So it's good. The other lefty. Right. Oh, yeah. Bill Mickelson. Yeah, Phil Anderson. I don't know if you knew who that Phil was. Do you feel like that helps a lot when the, when the... Oh, for sure. I want them all up there, and then I want to just sneak past. But, I mean, you know, it was one of those things. It was just a... I made a bogey early on Sunday.

I wasn't even... I was like, you know what? I kept telling him. And then I guess Louis made the two. Yep, on two. On two. He goes four up on me right after that two. I even buried the hole and lost by two, right?

And so... It's crazy. It was insane. It was one of those things where, like, I was like, you know what? We got a few more holes. to go. Let's just get a top 10. A top 10 in a major is amazing. We have a chance for a top five. Let's just keep battling. And then four birdies in a row after bogey and 12. Now we're tied for the lead. So I never even focused on winning or having a chance to win until I got to 17.

And I sliced that T shot so bad. Because I was like, we're walking 17. I said, we're tired for the league. We can win this. And he goes, yeah. And that's when I was like, oh gosh. Hold on. I was like, oh gosh, I'm not supposed to be here right now. You know, in my mind, I'm like, I've never had a lesson. I've never done this. Like, what are we doing here right now? We're at the Masters. Oh, my gosh, you're swinging.

Don't swing? Oh, gosh. There's it. Save it. Oh, my gosh. That's all in the back. How different was that feeling? You know, like, was it very clear, like, oh, my, I've never felt this before.

Right. So what happened is, you know, you hit nine iron into the par five, 13. You just three putt. Well, from just off the French, so it's a two put, but three putt, I consider it. And you two put for, for birdie. You get this beautiful wedge shot that spun back. You make another seven footer, six footer. Then you hit center of the green par five, about 20, 25 feet for eagle.

Two putt. You hit this beautiful cut-eight iron. And now you make this 15-footer because I'm staring at the leaderboard going, wait a second. I make this. And as soon as I putted it, about halfway to the hole, my putter goes up like this. It just goes right in the heart. And then walking in the tea, that's when it clicked. I was like, we're Bubba from Baghdad, Florida, having a chance to win.

the match. We got two holes to go. And then I was like, oh my gosh, breathe, breathe. And then I sliced it. But again, like Teddy was saying earlier, it's, I got in the woods. It was muddy. It's where people walk and stuff. And I had one 50. Not that I remember it, but I had 152 hole, but I picked a 52 degree as well at that moment. And you're talking about having to pick it almost like, it's muddy, compacted dirt. And I hit this 52 over there. That was probably the best shot. There was another shot earlier in the week on Friday. It's probably better, but that shot was better than the hook. Nobody talks about because it didn't mean anything at that time.

And so that shot, but I got to my area. There was only one shot I could do. If I'm going to win this golf from it, I had to pull this shot off. So I got so focused, I was like, this is what I'm doing. Tell me was like, you're going to do that. Yeah, that is a hard shot. Because that's what he said. Because the trees are close and you got a bad lie, you know, muddy, soft kind of a lie

where everybody's been walking. But for some reason, I picked a 502. You're just looking like he's got to get this up quick, you know? Yeah. It was hard. But that was really the only option to get it on the green. So it was one of those things where once I hit the shot, I refocused. And I just, when I got up there, I was like, this is what I got to do.

And then I was done. He's actually better, though, when he has one option sometimes. You know, like you give him a way harder chip where he can't hit it low, high, medium, run it, chip it. It's like the only shot is this. Right. His focus becomes, that's the only option. He's almost. Why do you think that is?

Well, I think it's just because my, growing up as a kid, don't worry about it, it's just their guest leaving, I guess. T4, yay. It's our boy lost. He just had enough. He's just had enough of us. He heard the liquor calling from there. So I think what it is, is that day that in 12, if I would hit the fairway off the tea, right,

there are so many options. Then I would have thought about he's short of the green. He's probably not going to get that up. Now you might get up and down. He might not get up and down. Okay, well, now I'm going to chip this. I'm a chip hold, cut it. Now I'm going to draw it.

Now I'm hit it straight. So I think it's just, there's so many shots rolling through my head. Right. But then when I hit it in the pine straw, it's only one option to rope hook it. So it gave me, it calmed me down or maybe focus more on that one thing instead of focusing on, oh, this, this, this, this, this, this. So I think it's just the way my mind works. I think the high-hand cabber can relate to that, though. Not the high-end cabber, let's say a medium guy, you know, they go play golf.

and when they get in the trees, the only option is to hit it low. You get more focus, right? Right. And a lot of times you hit a shot, you're like, man, that was pretty good. But you get in the middle of fairway, and you have no idea what you're doing because there's no real plan. It's just kind of like you stand to the ball and make a swing. Yeah, there's no clear path. Right.

That's how I feel half the time. If you only have that option, then it's like, man, I better commit to this. This is the only thing I can do. Right. Did you just call me a high handicapped? Yes. Just like a high handicapped. Perfect.

That's kind of a backhand. He's a slicer. He's a slicer. Let's be honest. Most people sliceable are high handicappers. Anyway. Now you do with the draw. My handicap just got worse.

I mean, not from what I saw. Although your new cut is changing everything. I've got to aim the barrel differently. It was like Bubba became the caddy out there. It was like, no, no, you got to aim a little left. It was changing everything. He didn't trust me. It's scary.

It's scary when you miss it left and aim left. The best part is he didn't yell at me. So that's good. So obviously the tent hole, the playoff, you've touched on it, bunch already and talked about the shot, but walk us through how that whole played out in your mind from T all the way through finishing out. So if you go back and look at the YouTube clip or have it recorded like most people do. Yeah, who doesn't? I have mine on my phone. So anyway, there was hydration again. Cut him off. Is it the barclothes?

His hand to him. He's just... So, um, he's always trying to get his logo in there. So anyway, I accidentally spilled that glass really loudly while you guys were recorded. Look at my sleeve here. So where are we at? We're at the tith hole. Here we go. Tempty. Okay.

So if you watch this clip again that you've recorded on your phone, you can see that as soon as I hit it, I know I don't cut it. I pull it. And so my shoulders just go down. And when my shoulders went down, all I could think about was two years later, or two years earlier, sorry. In 2010, I had a playoff with Martin Kimer at the Whistling Straits. to win a major. And when that, you know, I missed the putt in regulation. I missed the put

in the first playoff hole. And so then when that happened, all I thought about was my second chance to win a major, which never in my wildest dreams I actually thought I could win a major. You know, you dream it, but you don't really believe it, you know? And where I come from, my background, my history, I just, I thought this was it. My second chance, done. Like, am I ever going get another chance. And then when I get down there, I see he kind of flares his three wood off the tee into the first cut. First cut lies in most golf courses. It's harder to get good contact. And I knew he's going to have at least a four-iron in there. I mean, he's a long way back. And so I saw he come short. So now I'm walking in my ball. And when I go, I see the path of where the spectators have now

made a path because this is the gap of the trees, so the spectators and everything kind of make a path for you. So I started, as I'm walking, I'm always visualizing my shots. So I'm about 50, 50 yards away, but I can already see the path. I'm like, I'm doing this. My eyes are just walking like this. Oh gosh, we got a shot here. We got a shot. And then I walk down the fairway, he goes, and he goes, yeah, the lie's clean. Because I always walk down the fairway, he can get down there first. And so now he sees the lie, it's clean. Oh, now I perk back up. I'm like, this is my shot again. And so I get there, and that's when, you know, we both black out, and he backs out, and I hammer this 52-degree.

I mean, you know, sports science on ESPN says it's 55 yards. I've always said 40 because I was trying to be nice. But, I mean, I rope hooked it as much as I could. And then as you can see the spin on the green when it hit the green, even on the slope, I mean, it went sideways. I think that's when the average person looked at that was like, whoa, that must have been crazy. Because when it landed on the green, you never see a ball do that. Right, exactly. So it was one of those things where the adrenaline made the ball go with, I mean, you know, like I said, it's 164.

I mean, it went forever. But off the T, I thought we were done. I think second place ain't bad. Two seconds at majors is not bad. And then just things that happen leading up to me get in there. You know, my attitude changed a bit. I perked up. Got energy again.

I felt like we had a chance, especially when he said it was clean. That means no trees. I got a shot. I got a swing. Because I've always told him, if I got a swing, I got a shot. I'll figure something out. And when I saw him flare it to the first cut, come up short.

And you know that chip is really hard because it's so fast. The green looks like it's uphill, but for some reason that chip plays so fast. Right. You're going back towards 11. It doesn't make sense in your mind. You're looking at it like, I've got to hit this. The one that Louis had. Yeah, it's just lightning.

So I knew how difficult it was because he's going up over that little, I would say a little crest of heel and then back away, right? And so I knew that chip was going to be difficult. But I told myself, par, we go to the next hole. And I've got to, this is just a hook. This is just me. playing around the golf with you guys, right? This is easy. And so I can par, and then when I hit it, the crowd rushed in so much. And the funniest thing, I think this is where you should pray for Ted, but the crowd rushed

in. And this guy, obviously, he had a lot of hydration. And so he... Just like Moss. Yes. He might have been Moss. So he... Were you there? No, 12. He slapped me across the back. First of all, I have a phobia. I don't like people touching me. Right. I heard that. And so, no, that's just. real. And so I don't like people touching me, especially people I don't know, right? Like, just because I play golf and have a pink driver and all that stuff, like, don't touch me, right? And so I love everybody, but don't touch me. I love you a lot more if you don't touch me. So he slaps me. I'm talking about hard. And I, luckily for me, I think it's CBS, right? And they cut. But I did like this

so fast. I have no idea where the ball is. Yeah. And I'm beating him. Yeah, I walked out past. He stepped over here when I hit, so right when I hit, he picks the bag of search wall. People just come in and dude slashed me. I said, what are you doing? And then I just... I saw it land. And Teddy, so I finally, now I get past... I'm waiting for him like, you're not going to believe what he's going to do.

So I get past world. I said, Teddy, that you just slapped me across the bat. Yeah, you actually said, these people? These people are touching me. That was his first thing he said. First thing I'm thinking... You are touching me. I can't wait to see what he's going to say.

I can't wait to see what he's going to say. I said, these people are touching me. I said, that dude slapped me across my back. So what's wrong? And I said, where's my ball at? And he goes, it's on the green, man, look. Is that it? Is that it? That's what I said. That's literally what happened. And that's it. Then you won the Masters. Yeah, and then two pites later, here we are. What's your relationship with the Radical now? Because obviously, you're a vice captain in 2016. You were very emotional with the win. You made some comments recently about how you wouldn't mind just being a vice captain for Tiger Woods because you like maybe serving more than playing. What's your current relationship with team golf? Anybody in their right mind wants to play. If you're a competitive person, you want to play. But for me, if we go out there, right, and me and Teddy,

let's say I just cheer him on, I don't help him, I just cheer him on, and he makes 12 birdies. We won one point. Well, as long as the other team doesn't get 13 birdies. So we went one point, and we can lose every other match, right? So we are still losing. But for some reason in my head, I just, for me, that year, talking to the guys, being a part of the team, being asked.

I mean, I was seventh in the world when I didn't get asked. I didn't get a pick. Right. So it's one of those freak things that happened where Ryan Moore, top 10 to every four weeks in a row, you know, four playoff events in a row. And I told captain, I said, you pick them. This is what the rule is for. He's playing unbelievable.

And he said, well, I got a cart for you. So for me, it was a dream. I was like, you know what? I get to interact with everybody, and I get to help them. Whatever that means, I don't care if it's making you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, which I had to do. I had to get some teas. You make a good peanut butter dough sandwich. Yeah, I'm phenomenal at it.

I grew up poor, man. I'm good at peanut butter jelly. TV and Js are good. It's phenomenal at it. Really good. But I had to get some teas. How does a professional golfer that's made the writer cup don't have a few? in their back, okay? You just played Atlanta, and the day later, you're in, where were we at, Minnesota.

And I'm like, really? No T's. Who didn't have T? It's not about who. It is. Bubba gave him three in his pocket. I had three. Just in case somebody got hurt, I was ready to play, you know? So, but not, I mean, it's one of those things where, yeah, I've always dreamed, the Ryder Cup to me and the Hall of Fame are the same level. Until this task force, until the people started voting who should be captain, it used to be an honored position. where you've had a great career. How about you be captain? Right. You're not, I'm not going to teach,

if they let me be captain, I'm not going to teach Tiger Woods how to play. Right. I'm going to teach Tiger Woods, hey, you want this sandwich or you want this sandwich? You want me to iron your shirt for you? Which I could use. Yeah.

So, but it's like, hey. I guess that's a big thing for you like ironed shirts. Right. Hey, guys, on Thursday, this is the outfit we're wearing, you know? So that, that's what I would do. But I believe those two were honored positions. as the same to me in my own views writer cup Hall of Fame was the same that given you that used to be about you had to win a major where they would pick you all these things so I

view that as the same to me and then representing your country these brave men and women that I'm not brave enough to do been able to do to let me play golf for a living and getting that United States flag on your shoulder right I mean what a what an honor and dream my dad was a special forces green beret captain got to watch me into that That's why Rider Cup means so much to me. My dad's last event was the Rider Cup. He passed away nine days after the Rider Cup in Wales. And my dad was on IVs and stuff, staying alive to watch his son with the United States flag on the shoulder.

So for me, the Ryder Cup is a lot more. Like this year, my mom went, and I hugged her. And I was crying after Henrik Stinson beat me. Not that he beat me. I mean, I've been beat so many times in my day. It's fine. But it was about this could be my last one. If they don't let me be vice captain, if I don't make, if I don't make,

make it playing, it's giving me my last Ryder Cup ever, and my mom was there. And it was the last event. My family, my dad had to watch me play. So for me, Ryder Cup is by far. It's Hall of Fame. It's my family legacy that we got to watch, got to be a part of. So it means so much more to me than the game of golf. Yeah, because I remember in 2010 when you lost in the playoff at the PGA and you were emotional

and they asked you why. And you weren't like, you said, well, it's not because I lost because I know I'm in the Ryder Well, actually, my first question was, am I in the writer cup? I went from 18th on points all the way to third because of double points. I finished second. But, yeah, so that's my first question. It was Michael Collins. I said, I'm not doing an interview until you tell me if I made the writer cup.

And then my phone was ringing. It happened to be Corey. So he's like, you made it. That's great. But then I did the interview. But yeah, it was all because of my family, my dad's history, you know, what the military has done for us and what it means to me, you know. So having that United States flag around you.

you. It's just, and in the Olympics. I mean, you know, do that. Well, love a look. It was a ton of fun. You got some great golf course jams that you've put out over the years. So I'm a big fan of that. You're a big golf guy. Welcome, first of all, first impressions, kind of being in barsoil sports. Dude, I mean, I walked in with my twin brother. And he goes, is this a fucking job for these people? And I said, I was like, yeah, dude, this is martial sports. You know, like, my twin brother's now working with me.

Like, he's lived in my hometown in Bar Beach, Florida for, like, the last, like, 35 years, never, and it hasn't left. And I was like, you need to come see the world, man. You need to get out of that little fishbowl down there and come out. And so this is, like, his first experience in New York City going around with me and stuff. So when he walked in, he was like, Jesus, there's a bar, too? He's like, Jerry goes, what have I been doing with my life for the last? So that was my first impression of walking in here. Yeah, it's a good time to be here, too.

We've got baseball going on. We've had March Madness going on. So it is, like, of all the times, we try to claim. We always try to claim to people. You're like, no, no, we do a lot of work. And they come in there, like, too, like, what the hell are you guys doing? It's a joke. So it's a good time.

I did give Phil Mickelson a lot of shit, though, at Jordan's spee's wedding. Jordan got married in November, and Phil was there. and it was the day after he played Tiger. And I walked up to him, and I was like, this is a funny story. I said, hey, he didn't really know me other than he and I won the Arnold Palmer Award together, the Arnie Award, which they give to, like, golfers who give back, Golf Digest does. And we won it together at Pebble Beach. Other than that, I don't think you really, like, knew me or anything.

But I just, I had a few cocktails, and I saw him across the room, and I was like, I got to go tell this guy what I think. So I walked over to him, I was like, hey, Phil, you owe me fucking 20? And he's like, what? He's like, he's like, what? He's kind of, he's in the middle of a conversation. I was like, basically kind of looked at me like, who is this guy? I'm like, dude, seriously, yummy 2999.

I was like, for wasting four hours of my life with the shittiest golf I've ever seen. Like, you guys are like the best golf, you guys hype this whole thing up about this big match. You guys couldn't even make three birdies between the two of you. I'm like, I want my 2999 back and fuck, apologize to me for some shitty golf. Oh, my God. And he pulls out a wad out of his, out of his thing, and he grabs a hundred, like, a hundred dollar bill. He's like, he's like, yeah, I won 90,000 of these yesterday. Oh, my God.

He goes, take 100 and go, fuck yourself. What? Yeah, right to my face. This can't be real. I swear. Oh, my God. And then, so I was like, so I got real wasted, man, like real hammered at his wedding. Yeah.

And the next morning, my girlfriend was like, hey, I don't know if you, like, if you have Phil Mickelson's number or not. But the best part was, like, he was a boy. waiting me all night because I was so hammering just ripping on him. And then at the end of the night, I was going back to like the trolley that gets us back to the, or shuttle that gets us back to the hotel. And I'm stumbling to this trolley, man. Like, that's what you do at wedding. Yeah.

Good time. Oh, yeah. And I'm stumbling to this trolley because my girlfriend's had enough. She's pregnant, you know, she's totally sober. She's like, let's get you out of here. It's terrible. And we get to the trolley, we're waiting. And as we walk up, I'm like halfway and I look up.

And the other two people waiting for the trolley was Phil and Amy. Oh, no. Come on. Yeah. He's looking at, he's like, oh, my God. He's, like, so pissed. Like, he's going to have to ride next. So the next morning, my girlfriend tells me, she's like, you were, like, a big dick.

Like, you were a total dick. And I was sitting there thinking, like, well, whatever. You know what I mean? I was just having fun, fun, good time. So fast forward to this year at the Phoenix Open, now it's been since November that I hadn't seen or talked to. And I was worried. Like, I was worried he was going to be pissed. And I find out the first day of Phoenix Open of the Phoenix Open proam.

The reason is I bring this up, you're talking about Kutcher. I got paired with Phil Mickelson And the pro-in Yeah, yeah And I walked up to the T-box thinking like, dude, I got to apologize or whatever And as I'm walking up to the T-box, Phil looks at me and he's like,

Jakey! He's like, oh, this is gonna be fun today. And he was so, I was like, listen, man, I'm so sorry. He's like, Jake, seriously? And this is what I like about Phil even more now is Phil can be that guy too that you see on TV and think that he's too serious or he gets a bad rap sometimes on that.

People think he's phony. He's not. He's the funniest, coolest dude in the world. And we played that, I never played with them, and played nine holes that day. And then I switched and played with Coutre after. But he told him, he's like, I loved that you did that.

You weren't even, you weren't out of place at all. He's like, it was really funny. And he said, I wish more people like give me. He's like, because everyone, like, everyone kind of kisses his ass. Right. I thought it was hilarious. My wife, maybe not so much.

Right, right. I thought it was funny. That's crazy, man. What a roller coaster. That was a roller coaster. In the beginning of it, wanted to, like, crawl out of the studio because I was so, like, I can't believe someone would approach someone

like that. But like you said, like, you just told him how it was. It was shitty golf. Everyone fell out. Anybody that bought that thing and watched, it was like, really? I just spent four hours of my life. I can't believe you had the balls to say that to Phil Mickelson. That's insane.

I mean... That's amazing. Him going, I got 90,000 of these. Go fucking. Yeah, he did, dude. He did. That's such a good life. All right, man.

Maybe, but after, I don't know. He may have passed me. Well, that's possible. So you guys are obviously pretty tight. I heard a little rumor that there was a bet about John making it to 50. He had no chance. I still don't think he's over 50 yet, but I paid the debt.

I didn't pay him $150,000. He thought I bet him. We did. I gave him a nice. If I had died, I did. I gave him a nice huge bottle of vodka on his birthday. Now,

what more do you want on him? And guess what? It was gone that night. Yeah, he's calling me. He said, can I get a refill? I said, don't know, John, you don't understand.

Those things are expensive. I did. I even put a happy birthday on it. He did. That's a nice thing to do. That was good. No, it's always nice to. Of course, I am.

tired and it's always nice to come at her and see him once or twice a year like I do. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's fun. We've had a lot of good time. We've had a lot. We've had a lot of good times. From the PGA Tour now and the Champions Tour, or whatever tour they call it now, it's been good. Yeah, I got caught up earlier.

I said senior tour. I was my only slip. One slip thus far as I'm going to. It's what it is, though. Yeah. But senior guys playing golf. It's the tour that the Golf Channel needs to post more. Most majors won by any tour, and they never do that.

They need to start doing that. That'd be a better rebrand. Even with Tiger 1 in 15 already. We're still, we still got more major winners on this tour than any other tours. So it'd be just a good plot, you know, just something to make us feel a little better about ourselves as we get older, right? Hell, I'm just looking forward to a nap. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, but it is amazing the talent that these guys still have, even being over 50.

Yep. So even 60. I guess 60 would be the new 50 now. Especially longer. Even though I'm 67 feeling like 90. But, yeah, it's Bernie, yeah, the mad German, I don't know what the hell's wrong with him. He's playing better golf probably the last six or seven years than he did when he was playing the tour. Probably his whole career.

Yeah. But I think the long putter was a great advantage for him. Yeah. I mean, that saved him because he was, he had the yIPIOs from very short range. And that long putter, he perfected it. I mean, he totally perfected it. And more part touring for doing it. How different is Champions Tour Life than your PGA Tour Lives were?

Oh, it's the same game. Same game. More late back in a way, though. I mean, of course, we don't play for the money that the Tour plays for, but it's more of a, to me, what he taught me. He says, hey, if you can get a cart, ride, save your legs, which I do. And, you know, have fun, enjoy it. When you get in the hot, it's all the same as any tour.

You want to win. The excitement. It gets a little more serious. It's all down to the excitement and beating the best at what. they do. Right. And they definitely have the best of the senior tours around the world. This is the best tour to play. So, John, you've obviously been a fan favorite for a long time. You're one of our, you know, favorite players. Did you always kind of feel when you played that you were, you know, one of the fan favorites that you had kind of a huge following out there? No, I still don't know why people come watch me play

golf. I think it might be because they don't know what the hell I'm going to do next. I don't know. I think that's definitely a big part of it. It could be a set of clubs and a pond. He didn't like to. He's telling you. No, I am. Yeah. That's true. Yeah, that's true. It's true. It's true. Yeah. Nah, but it's been great. I mean, you know, just he's my guy that in 89 when I met him and Hubert, you know, they took me under their wing and we had a lot of fun together. But Fuzzy told me a lot of things, you know, as some of the other guys did too. You know, when I screwed up, hey, at least admit you screw up and move on. There's one thing in this fat body right here, there ain't no skeletons in my closet. It's all out. So if you're going to, if anybody wants to

dig, just go to the archives and read up on it because I never lied to anybody about anything. I'll give you one of story. We were in Columbus, Ohio, playing up at Mearfield, and he was down in a damn dumps. He was going to another divorce. Well, we're blaming on a divorce.

and there was a graveyard. I drove them into the graveyard. I parked in the middle of it and I said, now, you know, your life's pretty damn good. Now, these people here who in this home here, they're not doing real well right now. Now, you can feel sorry for yourself and get your head out of your ass and start playing golf because that's what he needed.

And he'll tell you, by golly. I'm not sure anybody's ever done it for him to him, but it worked. Yeah, it did work. He perked right out of it. whatever defunct mode he was in, he parked out and started playing better at all. It's amazing. Sounds like a scene from moving.

What are friends for? Yeah, exactly. If you two would communicate a little bit more, maybe he might have a better relationship. We got a gray relationship. You got to drive me to a fucking graveyard. Yeah, I know. I'll look it up. I'll look up the nearest graveyard.

We'll go have a little bit of a talk. Hey, that's what true friends do. I mean, that's what they do for you. You know, they got to tell you when you're not doing something right, and that's what a true friend does. he can't always pat him on the back and say it's okay and that's what i've always admired about him and even hubert back in the day too i mean you know and the kids now they don't they don't really mentor anybody it seems like you know and and i grew up mentoring of course arnold jack him uh i love him because he played fast and um you know just a chance to be able to not even not only just

get my tour car but a chance to meet all these wonderful guys and and their talents and stuff but to say that i'm one of fuzzies best friends and and he's one of mine is something that, you know, is pretty damn cool. Yeah, I think what Tiger did this year at a master's. It was great. Tiger did not feed himself. Everybody else lost it. Yep.

Right. I mean, think about it. He did everything proper at 12. He hits it left. He didn't go to the pin. He went to the left. 15. He hit toward the pines in the back of the green, the middle pine, right in the middle of the green.

And, of course, he had a great shot at 16. But he really didn't do anything to lose it. it? The other guys did. Yeah, I think it was huge that he ended up being in the final group because he was able to watch everything unfold and then sort of changed. Now, Grant, he was lucky on a couple, you know, a couple of T-shots. The one he had, well, it was 11.

Yeah, it was 40. That's 45. It looked like an old cart path. Yeah, it's like 45 yards right of the fairway. Right. Just a little bit outside. You know what I'm saying? But he had a wide open. I mean, it was wide open to the green.

So, you know, it takes a little bit of luck to win, to beat the best. But damn, what a great feeling. And you know that. Well, it's just awesome that he won. It's good for golf. And the greatest thing about that was is that night when they put all the people who said he'd never win again. Yep.

I loved it because I believe in him. I always said, no, he'll be back, and he will break Nicholas's records. Yeah, you've been saying that forever. Yeah. You know, through all the down times for him, you've been like, no, no, that's Tiger Woods. He'll be there. He's too good. He's just too good with his irons and his putter.

I mean, it's probably the greatest iron player in putter that ever lived. And he's up there definitely with Nicholas on pressure putts. And Crenshaw was probably the best putter in the world. I always said if Crenshaw hit it 30 yards further, he probably would have won about 20 majors because nobody could put it like Crenshaw. That's amazing. Yeah, this is a very pro-Tiger podcast.

There's nothing like that Sunday night. We work with a couple people who were saying he's done, he's never going to win again. Nothing better than digging up old footage. We shoved there. All the fucking throats for. You guys are idiots. A couple weeks old.

And poor guy like Tiger that's not one. He's probably not a top 50. and driving accuracy, you know, to win. You know, how many times have we seen it when he was going up against Bob May in Valerama in Louisville the first year we played there? He hit it 50 yards right of the water on 18 and it hit a fan or whatever. He had a perfect lie. I mean, just think if he ever got his driver straightened out, he might win 40, 50 majors.

It feels like that's kind of something that's given me a lot of confidence going forward in him is how well he's been driving it since he kind of, I think he decided to change chaffs a little bit, take maybe 15 or 20 yards off, and just hit fairways and going into these courses like Beth Page and Pebble. It feels like if that guy can hit fairways, it's like nobody could really stop him. You know, I mean, I made the statement that the only place it could happen would be at Augusta, because he knows how to play the golf course so well. And that's true.

And that's where it happened. That's where he hit. Boom. So, well, gentlemen, we really appreciate the time. It's been a lot of fun. Guy, I mean, we don't get gifts or anything for all this. No, we either did two. We either did two things.

I'll put that on a quote card. Yeah. It's like major championship, I'll be fine. What's with that? You got five BJ Tour wins, three of her major. You're just like a big game player? Well, aren't you remembered by your majors? Yes.

Yeah. How many you take guys, that's what, when you're done with your career, that's what you're remembered by. Majors, that's it. You can't tell me a lot of guys that have won majors, how many PGA tour events they've won. I mean, yeah, like the whole year, you're focused on, you know, every event you play, but your whole year is geared around those four events.

So, might as well play a lot. What is it about the majors that just makes you just win? I actually think they're easier to win. How's that? They're easier to win. You literally. I mean, come on. You got a lot of it.

You got elaborate on that. You break it down, so you've got, what, 144 guys in the field. You know at least 70, 80 of them just don't have a chance. The rest of them might not play well, so you're down to about 20. Shout out of Kevin. I mean, I had to say that. Kisner never has a chance. Kids already booked his flight home Friday night.

You already told me. I just changed my flight. I saw that. We asked him how he was going to do the majors this year. He was basically like 0 for 4. I should even go. Oh, Beth Page got no chance. I can't believe he's even coming.

What are you doing, Kis? He's crazy to hear him. Yeah, he is. Kiz is awesome. He's our boy. So, I mean, majors, like, do you just, do you find yourself just, like,

significantly more focused than you do in other tour events? Yeah, I mean, I would say so. I'm trying to bring it to the regular tour events. It's just a little different, different attitude, different feeling. We've got, I don't know, five or six of us at staying a house,

same five, six people. No distractions. It's pretty late back. pretty mellow. It is. I mean, it feels very refreshing to hear you kind of talk about, like the majors versus the regular tour events like that,

because we think about all the time. I mean, now, like, Tigers basically just only play majors, and we've always thought, like, once you get to that level, where you're winning major championships, how are you supposed to get up for, like, the fucking, sorry, Trent,

like the John Deere Classic. Shot at Iowa. I know. Well, you guys always do that. We got any Zach Johnson Shurps you want to get out right now? He's in Iowa. I'm in Iowa.

That's my tournament. They're always making fun of it. But it's, I mean, it's the fifth major. You know that, but. So play that one. You get up for that when you win it. He's been crying. But it is.

I mean, I feel like it would be really hard to get up for an average event when you're out here, like winning U.S. opens all the time. Yeah. I mean, it's different. It's definitely different. The atmosphere you can tell is different. You know there's a lot of importance on the majors. And then when you go to another week, it's especially you go like this week, you know, all your thought process, your prep is for here at Beth page. Like, that's what you're trying to do.

You know, you're not taking the week off, but a lot of your thought process, shots, whatever it might be are geared for that. Right. So it's a little different. So you and Tiger have kind of finished one, two, last two major championships. You both kind of write down the stretch. Have been the last two guys on the course to have a chance to win. What's, I mean, is a guy who obviously grew up, like a lot of the younger guys now,

like watch a tiger and all that. What's that like being in the mix with him? I mean, it's fun. It's exciting. I'd say Augusta's back nine. was probably one of the wildest back nines. I think I've been a part of. It was good for the game.

Good that he won. I think everybody wanted to see him win. They wanted to see him win in St. Louis. I mean, I'm not dumb. I know the whole crowd was here for him. If I wasn't playing, I'd have been rooting for him. I put some mean tweets out about you. I did apologize right after him.

No, I saw him. I'll be honest, my boys, my boys back home, they're not afraid to send it to me. So whatever y'all say, whatever you all have said, I've seen it. Right at the end, I did. I tweeted out, like, I just want to take a. everything back I said about Brooks Skefka, I was really emotional in the moment. I told him, actually, I was texting with him while we were down there. I told him I was coming on, so they were laughing.

But it's, I mean, you got the better of them that, the first, you know, at Bel Reve and St. Louis, like, how much does that mean? Is it, like, a little bit extra to be? Like, I took down fucking Tiger Woods in the back nine of a major championship? Yeah. It's a nice feeling. I mean, that's what you wanted, like, when you, seven-year-old kid or when you're thinking about it, like, you wanted to go down to the wire with Tiger and beat him.

And then when you do it, it's, man, it's pretty good. cool crazy like this it's like creating a player in a video game she's doing it and then and then at augusta it's probably the worst feeling you know you get beat by him but hey he played good he made it he made it seem closer than it was yeah i think you know you see oh he lost by a shot but literally you know he booed the last hole coming up you had a two-shot lead he's playing for it what were you thinking down the back how much are you paying attention because that leaderboard they're like seven eight guys it felt like that were in the mix was it like hard to figure out for the people that were doing the leaderboards there was a lot of shuffling going on like a little

last five, six holes. Everybody hitting the water on 12. Eagle 13 to come back from it. And then all of a sudden, you know, you're out of it and then make Eagle, you're back in it. Holy cow. Like, what the hell's going on? Yeah. But it was fun. It's wild.

There were so many guys that had a chance to win that one. It was definitely interesting. What happened on? What was going on on 12? Because a bunch of you guys that were right in the mix, all kind of came up short. What was going on in 12? The wind. I wish I knew.

I actually backed off it the first time. The wind should have been off the right a little bit, and then I went down off the left. So I backed off it, and then all of a sudden, when I hit it, aiming right for the center of the green, and you just see the ball starting to climb, and then it went into off the left, and you see it drift into the right,

and once you see it climbing, you're like, oh, it's got no shot. No shot. I hope we got the wrong yardage here. So it carries. You're just hoping for it. I mean, four out of six guys hit in the water. Right.

So that's not very good. You know something's up when that happens. Right. And that's kind of, this is a viewer. And everybody's talked about that a million times on that hole. Like you can't, you know, you can't come up short. It's just a guess. Right.

That's all it is. I mean, it's just a real lucky guess. I mean, seeing guys hit it short of the water. And then you see Henrik in the last few years hit it 30, 40 yards over the green into, like, the other course back there. So, I mean, we're not that bad. Right. Well, that's why it's just so surprising. And in order to be on the mix, I mean, you've got to be hitting the ball well.

You've got to be playing really well. So it was just kind of surprising. It was interesting to hear Tiger talked about when he said he was coming down 11. He watched you hit and saw you hit. And he was like, well, I know Brooks flights the ball better than I do. And he was like, I'm pretty sure he hit a nine iron. So he was like calculating all that in. You hit a nine iron there?

I did. And it sucks to go first on that tee. Yeah. It's the worst. You have no idea what's about to happen. It's really bad. But yeah, I mean, he got the advantage of seeing, you know, the three of us go and two of us hit in the water so you knew you knew what was that be smart to go back to belrieva a little bit i'm a

st louis guy uh how awesome were the fans how loud were the fans out there that's awesome i love that place um the fans are cool man it's a good sporting town that's what you want when you go to play um you know we don't get uh we don't get fans like that every week so when you do it's it's quite fun yeah it was rowdy i mean that was about as rowdy a crowd as i've ever heard oh yeah i think coming down my 16th hole we looked over to the left and you got 18 right there right by the grandstand i think tiger was coming up 18, right, we were going down 17. It was unbelievable how many people were there. I've never seen that many people at a golf tournament. It's pretty cool. That's awesome. What's the most nervous

you ever been on a golf course? Probably the rider cup. My first rider cup. I think I went to teeed the ball in in the ground and I literally teed it too high. And I literally, you know how like most guys will take the driver and kind of like tap it down? You go fix it with your hand and like kind of just push it down a little bit more, but I was so worried my hand was shaking that the ball was going to fall off the tee and I wasn't going to be able to put it back on. I was like, oh, no, this is going to be really embarrassing. I can't get the ball on the tea. I was like, I'll just leave it. Oh, that's amazing. Just swing hard and hope it finds a fair way. What's the U.S. got to do to win the Riding Cup next year?

I don't know, man. You know, it's one of those things where somebody's got to win, somebody's got to lose. it's all about time. You get guys that are playing well. You know, it's definitely difficult flying overseas. A quick turnaround trying to get adjusted. There's a lot of obligations we got during the week. It makes it, it's a fun week to play golf, but you also got to remember it starts on Friday,

so we've got like four practice rounds. You're like leading up to it, you're getting anxious. You're like, can we just get this thing going already? But it's fun. I enjoy it, but we just got outplay. played, man. We just sucked. And is it that simple, right? Because everybody always comes out with like, oh, there's in strife, the teams of mess, there's all this other bullshit going on.

Like, is it as simple as like, no, we should have to play better than they do. Yeah, it's pretty simple. We just didn't play good. And if you're not going to play good, it's really hard to win. And they played much better than we did. They put it way better than we did. There's nothing to do with what goes on behind closed doors. Everything that goes on behind closed doors is fine. Everybody's thinking, you know, all this shit happened and it didn't. Right.

I can promise you. Everybody that was in that team room knew, hey, we just didn't play good enough. What's the chatter like among the crew leading up to that? Is it like a big group text? You guys are like kind of buzz in there? Yeah, it's a group text. It pops up every once in a while. It hasn't popped up in a while.

But when things start getting a lot closer, I'm sure, like with the President's Cup coming up, once the team is kind of finalized or about to be finalized, you'll see a lot of the group text are going on guys that have already made it. And then the guys that kind of might be coming on the team that are pretty close with a captain's pick or something like that will be be on there but it's quite fun we get to a couple dinners which is nice throughout the year kind of right right before the playoff start it'll be a couple dinners we all go too we're big fans we appreciate you doing this this is awesome good luck going forward we'll be out there rooting for you at betpitch thanks boys thanks we made it I didn't

throw up yeah good way to go to it actually feels great you still got another five minutes for your off his boat but true thanks for thanks for doing it all right folks we're joined by an incredible special guest, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, Mr. Gary Wooden, I'm sure that does not get old here in that. No, that sounds really, really good. Say it again if you want. So we're here in New York City. You obviously, I mean, it's Tuesday afternoon. You finished up on Sunday evening. I feel like the last day and a half have probably been a whirlwind for you. To say the least, it was, we had a good time Sunday night. It was fun. There was some Justin Thomas, Jordan Speed, some guys hung around, which was pretty cool to celebrate with him. I had a lot of friends and family

there. So that was a good night. long travel day here yesterday, and it's done a lot of media, which is cool. You know, a lot of good things come with winning, so that's pretty cool. Yeah, it's probably cool when people are like, oh, Gary Woodland? I mean, they walked up here off the elevator into the Barstall H.Q. Just holding the trophy. That's a hell of a way to walk into places. Arguably the best entrance in Barstle history.

I mean, I can't even see Trent Frankie right now because this trophy is between us, which is spectacular. It's beautiful. So you win, you put out, you know, you see family, and again, there's probably a little bit of a whirlwind. Once you finish those media commitments, I saw you walk in like the tap room. How nice is that moment we were able to be like, all right, boy. That was cool. It was nice to be done. You know, we got in there. It was cool.

There were a lot of people there too, which was, you know, it was the first time I've kind of been congratulated, I would say, you know, outside the media. And then you have friends and family there. And then, you know, the fun stuff started. It was nice to celebrate. It was nice to kind of relax a little bit, open up the cup and get some liquid going in there. What did you put in that thing? We got some vodka in there. I've said before we, Jordan Speath was with me, so I'll blame him.

We didn't know how to get the top off. I've seen people drink out of it before, so we actually drink out of the bottom of the cup upside down until the U.SGA came up. And they told us we were doing it wrong and they showed us how to get the top off. So we finally did get the top off and drink the right way. That's incredible. I will say that we saw the trophy on, what was that, Friday? I think it was Friday. So they brought it over to our radio station, and I just touched it with my bare hands.

And I think the U.S.GA all, everyone like got into motion. There was people talking on walkie-talkies. He's like, Frankie touched it with the band. But I did some movement up there, and I thought I could have cranked that thing open. So maybe I loosened it up for you a little bit. I need some tips. I feel like a lot goes like, that's a big container. It's a huge container.

We had a bottle of vodka in there, you know. Just no problem. It fit very nicely. Like it was supposed to be in that. It was perfect. So let's talk a little golf. Any signs early in the week? Anything leading up to it with your game, with a vibe, a pebble vibe, anything like that?

that kind of made you think earlier in the week, like, all right, this might be, whenever you're going on something special here. I've played well this year, which helps, obviously, you know, with momentum, but I've played well in the last couple of majors. It was nice. I was leading last year after 36 holes in Belle Reeve, and that was the closest term I'll ever played a home in Kansas, which was cool. I played with Tiger on Sunday there, and I learned so much from that deal.

There was so much energy and atmosphere. Something like I'd never seen on the golf course, and I learned a lot. I let the outside kind of bother me a little bit, got out of my element early that round. So the goal going to this way, especially once I got the lead, was to block everything out, try to take in the beauty of Pebble Beach, block out all the noise, and stay within myself. And I did that probably better than I ever have anything in my life. How hard does that do? I mean, you're going into the final round. Obviously, you played really well to get there. 65 Friday. You backed that up with a 69, like two really good rounds in a row. You're going into Sunday. I mean, you've got rows right

there. You've got Brooks right there. You've got Rory's not far away. How hard is it for you to block those things out. It was tough and you know I go do media after Saturday's round and all I hear is my record you know over seven with 54 whole leads in my career you know pounded I mean I think every question was almost almost negative in that stem point but for me I try to turn that into a positive try to say hey records are meant to be broken and I think I said it so many times Saturday night I woke up Sunday morning and I believed it and I went out and it was nice for me to get off to a good start because Kepka came out firing right out of the gates you knew he would what he's done lately is tremendous so it was nice for me to make Bertie on two and three and kind of slow his momentum down a little bit.

That 0 for seven thing is kind of bullshit too because if you remember in Hawaii, I mean, you shot 567 with a lead and lost. Yeah, I mean, come on, Zander. I mean, what's that? What are you doing out there, man? And I think, you know, I learned from that too because when I made Bertie on 11 there, I think Maui, I had a three shot lead and I'm like, I was playing so good. I'm like, I got this.

I mean, these things. And then Zander holds out on 12 right in front of me and I'm just saying like just the sales, just, you know, the wind came out of the same. so I didn't let myself get ahead at all last Sunday, and that was really cool. Were you doing any, like, leaderboard watching when you were up there? Like, when we were out there, I'm like, is he on five right now or six and, like, looking what Brooks was doing? Yeah, I didn't have to do too much because it was kind of a three-horse race.

I mean, it was just really Justin and Brooks, and I was seeing Justin in my group, and Brooks was right in front of me. Right. So I could see and you could hear what Brooks was doing. The crowd was, there was a lot of pro-Broks guys out there on Sunday, which was cool, but that kind of fired me up, too. You know, they felt like you had people rooting against you a little bit, which was awesome. But, you know, him getting off that hot start definitely added to it.

Rosie, you know, birdied the first hole right out of the gate, took the lead away. So it was the scoreboards were definitely there. The biggest one was on 17. When I had that tight ship off the green, I look up, and Brooks was putting on the green. I didn't know if it was for Eagle or for Bertie, but I saw him miss it. And that at least gave me a little bit of breath that no matter what I knew if I made bogey, I'd have a one-shot lead still going into the last hole. I mean, let's talk about that.

I know. You said that. You just said like that the last chip. Right. Because it's basic. So you come to 17 and things are tightening. I mean, we're all kind of, everybody's trying to do the map if he makes this. Brooks is hitting it.

You might have an eagle pole. All kinds of stuff going on. That chip, you got to hit it over the knob. And we've seen people do that. I mean, even just watching the AT&T forever. Like you see people kind of get into that spot. First of all, I guess just start. I'd rather have you just walk us through the entire hole.

Yeah. I knew all I was trying to do was giddy left of. There's a clock in the middle of green where that. ridges. I was just trying to find a way to get it left of that clock. And right when it came out, it was dead right. It wasn't even close to that clock. So I knew it right when I hit it. My caddy actually said he's like, at least you've hit this shot before. Because I actually had it on Thursday or Friday. I had the same chip shot to a tighter pin. So I chipped it off the green on the same hole twice last week. So he told me right on the T-box, hey, at least you've hit this

shot this week. So I was a little bit prepared for it. But it was one of those, I was just trying to get over the ridge, get it past the hole so I could put up hill and, you know, try to take five out. The worst thing I could have done with two things, I could have laid the sod over. It took a huge divot, which would have been embarrassing. And then you'd heard the crowd, ooh, and then I could have bladed it in the water over the green, which would have been. I know a little stuff about that. Frankie knows all about bled. I'm notoriously the worst chipper in the history of the world. So when I saw you pull that wedge out, I start, I like ducked underneath the table. I'm like, how's he going to do this? The 64, I have 64 degrees, which

helps because I can kind of close it down a little bit and I can make sure I get solid contact. If I had 60 and maybe had to open it up a little bit would have been a little tougher. But the 64 allowed me to turn it down and make sure. You picked that thing so clean, man. When they showed the slow motion of your follow-through and the ball just misses, the club just misses the ball. I was like, that is the perfectly placed chip. Under that pressure, it's just unbelievable to pull that off. So did you land, you hit that thing exactly where you're trying to?

I thought I made it. I mean, I went 10 feet up. I might have jumped in the water if it went in. I was so pumped that it came off perfectly. And then I didn't think it was going to miss. be honest with you. And luckily it was a tap-in, though, which was nice. I love that. He's thinking, like, oh, yeah, that's going on it. I saw Rosie give you a little fist pump there. That was cool. He did. And, you know, his caddy, Lorty, who's an awesome guy, caddied for Henrik Sensen for a long time.

And Henrik and I have the same coach, Pete Cowan. And he even walked up and said, Uncle Pete taught you that one, didn't he? And it was just cool to have them in the moment, you know, give me props. Obviously, it was a special shot in my career. But to be, you know, congratulated by one of the best players in the world is pretty cool. So we're not great. We're kind of weekend golfers. I fight the hook all the time. When you're standing on 18, how much in your head is just, don't go left, don't go left, don't go left.

That was the big deal about having a couple of shot lead. I could hit an iron way out to the right. And I wanted, you know, look at my head, I was like, if I can hit just a little four iron out there, hit a five iron and have a wedge in, it's perfect. I pushed the four iron farther right because I didn't want to go left. I get into first cut, and it wasn't a great lie because I slid right underneath. I chunk the five iron, to be honest with you. I came up, and I had eight iron into the whole. And I'm like, I told my caddy, I'm like, all we need to do is get a wedge for the third shot, and I know I can get a wedge on the green.

Eight iron was a little nerve-wracking, to be honest. When I hit it, I was saying, please go. We couldn't see where it landed because it was a little blind over the bunker. We thought it was actually a little short. We got up there, it was in the middle of the grain. And I took a little bit deep breath knowing that I had three putts to win. Were you a little surprised that your birdie puck went in? Well, yeah.

I mean, I was trying to get it close. But I did know. I mean, I knew Tiger shot 12 under there. You know, in 2000, that's the first thing I said after my caddy, once I made, I got the ball out, and my caddy walked over, and he's like, I'm so proud of you. I'm like, you know, that was 13 under, right? He's like, no, he's like, I'm like, Tiger Shot 12. He's like, he did he?

He was so focused on winning. I'm like, come on, trying to set records out here. I was actually going to ask you. I was like, is that in your head at all that? I knew it. I knew. I would have took 11 under, you know, because I still would have won, so, but that's pretty cool.

How well did they do with Pebble Beach this year? The golf course was perfect. I mean, it was everything you expected. It got tough late in the days. It was firm. The greens were the best poena greens I've ever seen. Pebble, you know, I haven't played Pebble sometimes in the past just because they can get bumpy, especially during the AT&T.

They were absolutely perfect. The golf course setup was what it should be. It was you hit good shots. You got rewarded. You hit bad shots. You got penalized. You had to drive the golf ball and play. You had to keep it below the hole.

if you kept it blow the hole, which fortunately I did all week because I drove it in play, you could be aggressive making pots, and that's what you had to do. Another shot we got to talk about that we kind of skipped over 14, your second shot on 14. I mean, that hole is giving people fits forever. It's just kind of an awkward, like tough par five, the uphill second shot. I think you were what, 264? I mean, you probably remember better than I do. Walk us through the second shot on 14.

263, up 10, 273. All week I'd tell my caddy, let's play aggressive. Let's play aggressive. You know, I'm playing good. Let's play to win, play to win. And I knew I had a one-shot lead. I saw Justin Rose from a very similar situation lay up. I know left.

I hit the chip shot left of that hole in the practice round, and it's just not great. Right. Right's out of bounds. And so it was the first time probably all week. I was in my head going to play conservative. I was going to lay up. And my caddies said, hey, let's hit it.

Let's go. Let's take this three wood. It's a perfect number. Hit it over the green and we'll get it up and down. And that's what, that only gave me confidence in that shot, which it came out perfectly. But it gave me confidence the last four holes. This guy believes in me.

You know, under, I hit this ball out of bounds. This golf tournament's over with. And with five holes left, we could have played conservatively made par and, you know, bought it a little closer. But that gave me a two-shot cushion, which really gave me confidence and kind of sealed the deal.
