Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, 4Play listeners, you can find us every Tuesday and Thursday on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or YouTube. Prime members can listen ad-free on Amazon Music. Oh, Rick! What's up my brother? I got a buddy who struggles with that shot. A lot. His name's Frankie Burrilli. So the guys actually gave him a nickname of Butterknives because he's always knifes that across the green.
Starting point is 00:00:24 Broads 100. Now you've got to break 90. We appreciate what you guys do for golf. It's been really cool. Thank you. You're making it cool. I was like, hey, Phil, you only fucking $29.99. And he grabs 100.
Starting point is 00:00:34 He's like, yeah, I won $90,000 a lease yesterday. He goes, take 100 and go fuck yourself. What? What are you that different? It's ain't a hobby. We're live right now? I think we're live right now. I watch the BJ Championship.
Starting point is 00:00:48 That's great. All right, we're letting people join. We've got Friday, round two recap. Sort of like as the round finishes type recap situation, which I like. We go live. There's golf happening. We can react to it in real time. presented by Fireball, a very good friend's of Fireball.
Starting point is 00:01:02 If you're not aware of Fireball, I don't really know where you've been for the last. However, how old do you think you need to be to be aware of Fireball at this point? I think anyone like, 17. I feel like it's, yeah, I feel like you've heard of it at least. Okay. We'll go 17. For us golf is 21 maybe. Get out, have some fun with our friends.
Starting point is 00:01:21 21's probably not a bad number to go with at this point. It's a safe number. But inevitably, little things have a way of ruining it. If you're really feeling like upping the ante on the course this weekend, Make sure to grab some new fireball, birdie shot club. It's literally a golf club filled with fireball nips. We're going to talk more about fireball throughout this broadcast. But we're watching the PGA Championship.
Starting point is 00:01:39 I've been sitting at the bar here at Bogie Hills Country Club in St. Charles, my hometown, watching golf. It's got some teeth today. It's got some teeth yesterday. It's had the teeth all week. But I will say the rain, for anyone that's from the, or lives in or has lived in the tri-state, Long Island area, has been out to Beth Page Black. We've all done it before. You've gone out there.
Starting point is 00:01:58 You've finally taken your route. out there. There is no golf course that is playing more like when us average Joe's go out and play a golf course than Bethpage Black plays because if you've played the black, you've probably played it in like a misty northeastern day. And when that misty sort of like wet, humidity type day in the grass is 10 times thicker it feels like because of that mist and that wetness, that's what I'm watching these guys do. I'm watching guys that are 170 out in the the rough hitting a shot that comes up short of the green side bunkers because they just can't get a club cleanly through this grass and it's causing fucking havoc out there and I love watching that
Starting point is 00:02:40 as a viewer. The 15th hole at Bethpage Black, I never thought that I'd see anything that even replicates that and almost seems like every hole at Oak Hill is the 15th at Bethpage where like you have to hit the perfect on a string drive absolutely laser beam it from those back tees. And then your second shot is way, way, way, way deeper than your. you thought like they're clubbing up they're always clubbing up maybe maybe sometimes even two clubs up if you're in the rough you never even have a chance to go for the green and i always remember that because it's obviously the course that i've seen the pros at the most right by my house and i always remember that being such a stunning thing to see where it's like even these guys can't hack it out of
Starting point is 00:03:18 that stuff like how hard could that possibly be and that's what all of o'kill is yeah you get a little technical here there's also there's moisture on the face which makes everything that much harder when the club itself is wet the ball like bounces off of it um I'm watching, I was just, I just came in from watching the J.T. Morikawa and Rory Group. And we were talking about this a little bit yesterday, Frankie. The, the fairways are so narrow that and the rough is so thick that those T shots are just like very, very high leverage shots. And at the Masters, you know, the last major, it's pretty wide out there. And if you miss the, if you miss the fairway, you can get in the pine straw, you can still get to the back of the ball.
Starting point is 00:03:56 So it kind of feels like a second shot golf course. It's like as long as you don't put yourself behind a tree, you're going to have a chance. At Oak Hill, it's right from that first T-shot. You better hit the fairway because you can't control spin. And there were some comparisons to Wingfoot coming into the week. But I don't really see it the more I watch the golf course because Wingfoot, you could run it up everywhere. And so if you just could keep it online, you could run it up. There's like six or seven holes at O'Kill where you can run it up.
Starting point is 00:04:22 But most of them, there's bunkers in front. There's long and rough in front. So a lot of guys are playing Army golf, misright, miss left, short, got to get up and down for boge. John Rom is really grinding to make the cut. So is Justin Thomas. So the course is really, like you said, it's flashing its teeth. I think the rain will help the weekend. I think it was getting a little crazy. The rain will soften the greens a little bit. They're already softer. The cut line looked like it was going to move to six, but it's kind of holding steady at five. So I think the rain's actually not the worst thing in the world from the golf course perspective.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Yeah, I think, you know, it's interesting for me watching the, because the softness, I think, will help obviously on the greens it always does but i think it's going to help in the fairways at time i mean there's that clip that's going kind of viral on twitter of justin rose hitting like a high cut into the right side of the fairway and ended up in the left rough which is literally no different result and someone yank pulling one off the tea like 15 yards into the rough as long as you don't have tree trouble you end up in the same spot and just rose hit this beautiful like high cut to the right side of his fairway it rocketed left trickled like a foot into the rough and was buried and that's the same thing as hitting a horrific shot now
Starting point is 00:05:27 That happens at Open Championship golf all the time at the British Open. We see it where someone hits it and it lands on a certain knob. It should end up here. It ends up 55 yards up left in like a pop bunker because you just get a little bit of a bad break. So I think the Justin Rose thing was a little bit of an anomaly. If you've seen that video going out out there, I think people that are hitting good drives or ending up good, people that are not are in the breath. The reason, the main way that it's reminding me of wing foot is that guys are just missing fairways. Like, the guys that are hitting it the best off.
Starting point is 00:05:55 But they are still missing fairways. Like it doesn't really matter whether you're hitting it long, whether you're hitting it short, whether you're Kevin Kisner, whether you're Bryson DeShamba, whether you're roaring. It doesn't really matter. Like you're just missing fairways. Every single time they cut to somebody on this fucking broadcast that I'm watching,
Starting point is 00:06:11 they're in the rough. Like no one, they never cut to someone and they're just in the middle of fairway. Never. It like never happens. The entire broadcasts, they're just hitting out of the rough. And it's very fun to watch. It's a different test. Now, we need a little bit of juice. We need some, we need some star power a little bit. We've got, obviously, Connors, that'd be fun to watch. Cool, if you're
Starting point is 00:06:30 into golf, great. But, like, you got Scotty behind. The biggest knock on Scotty is that he's boring. So of all the main stars, you've got, like, the top one is known as being boring. He's there, Victor Hovlin, Keegan Bradley, who, again, golf nuts love him. Our guy, Calum Taryn is currently the graphic. They've got five human beings on the graphic. One of them is Callum Taryn, who's up there, which I love to see. But in terms of just getting this championship going throughout the weekend, getting it to deliver like we talked about with the Brooks versus Tiger, with Morikawa and 15 guys being tied for the lead in California, and Morikawa make an eagle on 16 and winning with Phil Mickelson winning, like with us getting a PGA championship that delivers
Starting point is 00:07:11 the drama like we've talked about for the last five, we need the juice to pick up a little bit right now. I'm looking at Bryson DeShambo. He shot three over on the front nine. I feel like he's big for the juice quotient. Really, really could use him in the mix just because we were talking about this yesterday on the podcast. His prize conferences are just, you just never know what he's going to say.
Starting point is 00:07:29 You just don't know. He might go on a tangent about, oh, it turns out 5,000 calories a day. It was not good for me. He might talk about how he was really close to quitting golf. It's like, really were you? So I love Bryson being in the mix for this. You know, Rory is still kind of hanging on it too over. Dustin Johnson is at one over.
Starting point is 00:07:43 Patrick Cantley shot 67 today, which must have felt really nice to watch everybody come back to you. You know, it's one of those weeks where it reminds me of last year at Southern Hills where JT was seven back going into Sunday. There's just there's not No one's going to shoot six under for the weekend. So if you can shoot a couple of three under rounds, you're three over par and you're thinking yourself, all right,
Starting point is 00:08:04 I can get this thing to even par by Saturday night. You're in with a chance. So I still think there's time for the cream to rise to the crop. But a lot of guys did eject them. I mean, Sam Byrne shot 14 over, I think for two days. Sung J.M. shot like 11 over guys.
Starting point is 00:08:16 We're playing great golf coming in. So this place is humbling people for sure. For the cut was hot coming into the week. We won last week. And now it looks like we are. on our way and I don't want to jinx anything unless Bryson's like arms fall off. But it looks like Bryson just has to stay within the cut for us to win this. Is that what we're looking at? Yeah. Plus 540 would be a big hit. It would be a big hit. We just need Bryson. He's at one,
Starting point is 00:08:37 what is he's going to be? One under total. Yeah, the cut's going to be plus five, it looks like. So as long as he shoots 41 or better on the back nine, we're looking good for a plus 560 payout, which would be two weeks in a row. We're streaky. This bet is streaky. Two weeks in a row is huge. I mean, and a plus 560 during a major championship we picked a bunch of big names obviously you got guys like brison and you got guys like adam scott that's a great hit that's a great hit fellas Tommy fleetwood it's a really good hit if this thing holds we would need a a catastrophic meltdown from bryson to shambo it's possible say part of me would root for that i don't want any of the people that like that bet on the four the cut bet to lose including myself but part of me would root for bryson to end up with a 42 on the back
Starting point is 00:09:21 You guys remember a couple of years ago at Tori Pines where he was like tired for the leading shot like 50 on the back mind? It's definitely possible. I'll tell you this. Bryson does, somebody mentioned earlier, Bryson does deliver the juice because yesterday being here back in St. Charles, Missouri, you know, it's a suburb of St. Louis, Midwestern, pretty working class area. People are in a golf where at Boge Hills Country Club, they're into golf and a very like normal average fan. you can really get a good gauge off of them. And people were pumped that Bryson was leading after yesterday. And it wasn't that they're the biggest Bryson fans in the world.
Starting point is 00:09:56 It was just people were looking at that leaderboard. They were looking at the other five, six, seven names below that get highlighted. And they were going, Bryson's in the lead. Let's fucking go. And again, it wasn't that they love him. It wasn't that he's their favorite player. It was just the guy spritzes his ball. The guy plays slow.
Starting point is 00:10:13 The guy's hitting other PGA pros with his fucking T shots. Like, he's just Bryson, right? He's just interesting. He's a headline guy. He's been a headline guy for his whole time on tour. He's got the single-length irons. He's the scientist. We laugh a lot about, like,
Starting point is 00:10:28 Matthew Fitzpatrick is actually who Bryson thinks he is, but Bryson is who Bryson tells everyone he is. And that just matters in the marketing game, in the juice game, in the Q score game, Bryson being at the top of the leaderboard yesterday, and then potentially melting down today to ruin the four-the-cut bet, even if it's not great for people's, you know,
Starting point is 00:10:48 gambling portfolios here at Barstle's sports book. He just brings it, dude. Bryson is must watch out there. I think everyone's over the live drama. I just don't think anyone cares. I mean, maybe they didn't care at first, but there was a lot of questions this week to players about what's going to happen in the future, and they're all just like, I don't
Starting point is 00:11:04 really care. I'm just, I'm here to play majors. It's so nice watching Brooks. I love watching Brooks in majors. I love watching him drip in little downhill eight-footers. You know, we think of Brooks is a bomber, but he puts beautifully in majors. I'm happy that Bryson's back. It's just fun to see all the boys back together. And I think that there's like zero animosity between them.
Starting point is 00:11:22 It doesn't feel like there's any animosity with the fans. It's just these four majors. And we've talked about this in the past. What's happened in golf is not bad for them by any stretch. Victor Hovlin, another guy knocking on the door. He's been knocking on that damn door. It's going to fall down at some point. I mean, he's always just in the mix when it comes to the majors. He's a guy that you bet on pre-championship saying it's just got to be his year, Victor Hovlin. How old is Victor Hovlin 25. Wow. Wow. So that's a stunning number. Victor Hovlin being 25 is insane. I would have said that this guy's been knocking on the door for like five years. Maybe he has been. He's right there at the time of recording that of us recording this. He's T2. He's through 12 holes. He's 200 for the day. Only two back of the leader, Connors and tied with Scottie Schaeffler. That guy wearing his ridiculous shirts that Danny asked about in the press conference yesterday. He's just a really fucking solid big time golfer. And that's, some point guys around him maybe he doesn't have what it takes to like go out and get it but at some point maybe this is the this is the event where other guys around him are just going to fall apart
Starting point is 00:12:28 and he's just going to stay calm and he's going to stay to his game he might not go out and light the world on fire but if he can go one under two under each day i'm telling you victor hovelin might win this thing i know it's not going far out saying that because he's fucking tied for second on friday but i'm telling you this might be the one where everyone crumbles around him and he's just stands tall. It's a good shout because I'm looking at the leaderboard. It's a bunch of guys who are not thought of as very good putters. This is a ball striking test. This is a who can hit the fairway and who can hit the green. Corey Connors is not a good putter. Scotty Sheffler, that's been his weakness. Victor Hawland, not a good putter. Keegan Bradley, it's a little better now, but
Starting point is 00:13:04 historically not a very good putter. Scotty Shepard just got it to five under. So he's in solo second now. But I agree with you, Frankie. I think it's going to be a week like this where you don't have to go out there and shoot six under on Sunday. You can just birdie the par fives, maybe drive the par four, four-fourteenth, and play no-nonsense golf and just kind of be the last man standing. Sort of feels a little bit like Brookline last year. And it feels more like a U.S. Open than a usual PJ Championship. But as we talked about before, PJ championships have been hard recently. The last two, Keow on Southern Hills have both been mid-single digits under par, I think winning scores. So I think, I think, I think
Starting point is 00:13:37 six under, probably seven under maybe wins a tournament. I think that's generous. I think it's, I think it's higher than that. Really? Yeah, I think four somewhere around there. I mean, dude, people are getting eaten alive by this place. And these rounds that we're seeing, right? These guys that are leading right now, it's not like the Byron Nelson or something where if somebody's at 12 under at the halfway point that they're going to get to 20.
Starting point is 00:14:00 This is like, if someone's at four or five under after 36 holes, that's like a miracle. Like they've like, it's like unbelievable that they've gotten to that point and they're never really going to come back. I mean, I'm looking at, so I had one of my. bets this week on the Barstle sports book. Shows to the Barcelona sports book was Dustin Johnson to beat Victor Hovlin. In DJ I was looking, I was like, oh my God, he melted down today. I can't believe he blew it.
Starting point is 00:14:21 He shot four over today to get to one over for the tournament. He's tied for 16th. So it's like, guys are just going to come backwards, I feel like. So, I mean, you're right. Obviously, anybody would take seven under right now, but I'm looking at this. And I don't know that I see somebody
Starting point is 00:14:38 finishing seven, eight under par. it feels like three, four under might win this thing. Like five under got into a playoff last year at Southern Hills. Shane Lowry just poured in an absolute bomb. He's birdied four of his last six holes. He's at even par. That's a guy that's just sticking around, making a fight. He's fighting for his life out there.
Starting point is 00:14:57 And he's going to find himself maybe under par going into the weekend. There's going to be a lot of names that are in that one under, two under, even par, that you're going to be like, this guy has a chance to win. And that's what's going to make a great championship. that's what's going to make a great Sunday knowing that no one's really going to pull away. And if they do, it would be stunning. If someone pulls away at this thing and ends up eight, nine under, everyone else is 200 one under, no chance. This is coming down to the wire, maybe four or five names coming down.
Starting point is 00:15:24 The last four holes are all going to be tied. It's going to be a fantastic Sunday. You could just see it already. You just said it's like a foot. Scotty's about to get a six under. So if there's one guy who could run away, it might be him. But I do agree with you. I don't see it happening.
Starting point is 00:15:36 It feels, yeah, the Masters, it was like it was. either going to be Scotty or Brooks. I mean, sorry, it was either going to be Brooks or John Rom. There was no drama on Sunday. It was easy for John Rom. So this is going to be a very different, a very different tournament. How about I just got these first two majors backwards. I had, I, I, I sat here and I said, Scotty Schumper is going to win the Masters in a boring fashion. He's going to be up by two, three holes in the Sunday. He's going to be up by four on the 12th hole. He's going to be up by five putting on the 18th. It's over. That was John Robb. This week, all in John Rom. He's our guy where John Rom
Starting point is 00:16:11 State run media. He shoots up billion on Thursday and he's like barely going to make the cut up we're lucky. So I was just fucking backwards, dude. On these two guys, I was just backwards. It feels like. I mean, Scotty's got to be the guy right now, the favorite, right? Yeah. Definitely. Definitely be a, I mean, he was the favorite coming
Starting point is 00:16:26 into the week. We heaped all that praise on Rom, but the books, I guess they really liked what they saw last week at the Byron Nelson. He hasn't finished worse than 12th since October. So they've liked what they've seen every single week. I think it would be a cool narrative. That's true. That's true yeah he's in finished worse than t12 since october it's like it would be really cool we talked before the week about how crazy it would be if if rom won you know he'd be a halfway
Starting point is 00:16:48 if scotty wins you've got you've got two guys who are just so far ahead of everybody else that they just basically alternate who's going to win the big tournaments i like that i kind of enjoy that i feel like do you do you feel like dan that rory mackroy can handle that like do you think that he's is that going to rattle him is that going to light a fight of fire under his ass. Is that going to, we heard a lot? He's doing lessons with Tiger Woods. He's got his swing goats there.
Starting point is 00:17:15 He's giving one word answers. He's a little bit muted in the presser. He's not doing the lifting anymore. Where do we think that would put Rory McElroy's headspace if we had a very clear John Rob, Scotty Schaeff, or Buno, Dose, most recent major champs, not even close? Yeah. You know, Trevor R. I was in here a couple days ago and he was saying he feels like three guys have separated
Starting point is 00:17:38 from the pack and everyone kind of looked at each other being like three guys. Kind of feels like it's two guys. Maybe it'll take pressure off him. Maybe, you know, maybe the narrative being, he's not playing so well and he's not talking. Maybe people will just kind of stop looking to him for answers all the time. Maybe that's a strategy.
Starting point is 00:17:52 I'm just going to be like a boring guy who gives the same answers as everybody else. But he's hanging on. He's fighting. I thought he was going to eject yesterday, but he's fighting. Rory Cole himself a pussy as we've been recording here. Did he? Yeah, he hit one like short into the rough and just on a hot mic
Starting point is 00:18:06 just goes, you're a pussy. I was on that drivable part four, probably. He was like, yeah, nice bailout. Oh my God, as the ball's in the air, he makes contact, the ball's in the air. And for not even a second, you just hear fucking pussy. That's great. You fucking pussy.
Starting point is 00:18:24 It's a great clip. They caught Tyrell on a hot mic saying fucking shit hole about some hole. And then golf I just made a big tweet about it. It's like, that's why the media gets a bad rap. Let the guy curse on the golf course without making it into a quote graphic. Yeah, you don't need to make it a quote graphic, but I do enjoy that. You know what's not boring boys is Fireball. Fireball is iconic cinnamon flavor.
Starting point is 00:18:45 Taste fire goes down easy, making it the ultimate crowd pleaser. Fireball is the birdie shot of golf. It's number one shot in the United States of America. The fireball 50-millimeter shooters are the perfect shot for the golf course. Throw a bunch of you in your bag. They're ready to go whenever you need them. Plus, no shot glass or chase are needed. Just crack it, knock it back.
Starting point is 00:19:04 You're ready to rock. If you're feeling like upping the ante on the. course this weekend, which you should be, I'm going to be playing golf this weekend. You should be playing golf this weekend. Make sure you grab the new Fireball Birdie Shot Club. It is literally a golf club filled with Fireball Nips. We all like to have fun out there. I'm in St. Louis. Louis, I'm here with my buddies, my brother, my pals. We're going to have a great time. We're going to drink Fireball Whiskey, that iconic scent and flavor, number one birdie shot in the United States of America. So big shout to Fireball Whiskey sponsoring our event Tuesday
Starting point is 00:19:31 in these shows throughout the week. Ram on the Long Part 3, the 240 Part 3, apparently. was just caught on a hot mic also saying nice fucking whole pGA as the ball was flying towards they got to stop with these hot mics man they're too hot they're too hot they're too they're extremely hot this week because you uh on thursday and then earlier today before like the crowds really got crazy or if they showed a guy that was like earlier on the golf course and they're showing something they're showing a t-shot you could hear every single thing in the crowd did you guys noticed that more than like any event that i've ever watched on tv you you you You can hear a guy legitimately crinkling into his bag of chips as the guy was stepping up to the ball.
Starting point is 00:20:12 These mics are hot and they're crispy. You can hear everything. I'm a fan of that, but it's almost like the walk-in talks have just kind of broken the seal. And now they're like, well, I mean, you guys talk to us on the, wow, or Victor Hava just objected left. But it's like, yeah, you talked to us that time. So, I mean, now everything's fair game. I mean, at some point, it should just be fine.
Starting point is 00:20:34 You're right. You're inside of the arena. you're playing, you're getting paid how many millions now, like millions upon millions upon millions now these guys are making to play. Let us hear everything. Right. Like at some point, you're entertainers. You are characters
Starting point is 00:20:48 in this whole play. Let us get the hot mics. I want to hear Diram being like nice whole PJ. And I'll be honestly on that hole. I agree with them. Like I'm watching these guys do. I watch JT hit one in like that creek on the right. I'm watching guys hit it way left. Like nobody's even close to hitting it on that
Starting point is 00:21:04 hole. So I agree it. It's 248. It's cold. It's raining. And there's like a narrow sliver it feels like to get it back to that hole. That helps impossible. It's amazing. It's amazing what's going on out here. I mean, we talked about yesterday. It's like it's there just like us in some weird aspect where it's like if you just shorten up the target, it's impossible to hit it down the middle. But then you go up to the widest fairway of all time and you can hit it legitimately where the fairway splits by the mowers. You're just like I had all that room and I dialed one right down the middle. But then the one time you need to show up, that one time you got to put it in between those two bunkers. Or maybe there's just water on the left. You're like, just don't hit it left. You fucking hit it left. And you hit it way off the spinny face and it's flailing out left for me. It happened to me today.
Starting point is 00:21:50 It's like just all day I've been hitting down the middle. I have one hole. I got to hit it straight and you fucking hit it out of bounds. It's crazy. And that's what these guys are doing right now. The tighter against the more mistakes. We should mention Michael Block, the club pro who's at even par. a really cool, really cool video clip of him.
Starting point is 00:22:08 A friend of mine, Gabby Herzig, basically just told him, Brooks is to even par two, so he's coming, said basically, you know, you're ahead of your six shots ahead of John Rom. How does that make you feel? And he started crying. He said, well, yeah, I just wish you guys could see me on like the back of the range, just, you know,
Starting point is 00:22:25 given lessons. And then he's like, I don't know why this is making me emotional, but it is. So a really, really nice story. Could very well shoot 8077 the weekend. Doesn't mean it's any less. cool of a story because he is wiping the floor with a lot of guys who get
Starting point is 00:22:38 paid a lot of money to do this and he gives lessons on his back porch and he beat Sam Burns by 14 shots through two rounds so golf remains a chaotic mess that's unbelievable that's unbelievable and like I get that any given day any given Sunday the whole deal
Starting point is 00:22:54 at any moment dude to go through this gauntlet for 36 holes and to defeat people and post a score like that and beat these guys like that's enough variance in my opinion that you just, you just out, it wasn't luck. It wasn't like you just caught fire. Like, that's just outperforming people pretty dramatically over the course of 36 holes. That is not easy to do. That's not a six whole stretch. That's not a nine hole stretch. That's not getting lucky for
Starting point is 00:23:20 a day and being hot while the other guy's not. That's not one side of the draw versus the other. It's going out on an insanely difficult golf course that we're comparing a wing foot to Bethpage, maybe a weird mix of the two, and just dominating some of the best. players in the world. That's fucking amazing. It's amazing. He's a guy's a hell of a player. I was doing some research on him. He's been the section, the Southern California section, which is obviously a pretty
Starting point is 00:23:44 big section with L.A. and San Diego. He's been their PGA player of the year, nine out of the last 10 years. So this guy's an absolute unit in those tournaments. This guy can golf is fucking golf. I mean, come on now. Come on. It's a seventh major. It's a seventh major. He's played in five PGAs and he's qualified
Starting point is 00:24:00 for two U.S. Open's first cut that he's made. So just a great sport. I don't know how old he is. He looks like he's around 40 years old. It's just so cool that he's having this moment at this point in his career. And he can cash out, right? Oh, yeah. He's a professional. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:12 100%. He's getting a good paycheck this week. That's awesome. Just love to see that, man. You love to see that. How about I got my, uh, so I, I, you forget, I'll be as a human being. You forget how long golf takes and how much of the day golf actually takes up. And like today this morning, I walk my nephew, Robbie to the bus, to the school bus.
Starting point is 00:24:31 You got five days of school left this year, walked him to the school. to the school bus, gets on the bus, like 8, 15. He's like, all right, Uncle Sam, I'm going to see you afterwards, right? I'm like, yeah, he's like, we're hanging out after school. I'm like, yep. Well, we can play golf at like 10 o'clock. You're not done until like 233. You have a couple beers, like 4 o'clock.
Starting point is 00:24:49 He gets off school at like 2.30. So I guess he called my brother and was pissed and was like, where's Uncle Sam? Like, how come he's not at home right now. And he's like, he better FaceTime me. And my brother's like, text me. He's like, dude, Robbie, he knows you're doing the podcast. but like you need to FaceTime him. He's pissed that you're not at home.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Golf is just a full school day. You just don't like literally. I'm like, dude, I left. Okay, so I left Robbie. We're like holding hands, put him on the school bus. It's great. I went over there,
Starting point is 00:25:16 my sister-in-law, Maggie. It's lovely. He's all kinds of kids. Great. And then I went in like 30 minutes later. I'm having like a screwdriver on the first D with my buddies. And that's like, all we've done is have a couple of beers and screwdriver since.
Starting point is 00:25:27 And he's been at school, developing a brain, becoming a human, gets out and it's like, where are you? And I'm like, yeah, we're like, it honestly felt like it was an hour. And he was just at school. He had a full day at school learning stuff going to the classes,
Starting point is 00:25:41 dealing with his teacher, Mrs. Baker. And now he's just like back home right now. So it really shows you that just the perspectives of life and the fact that he went through an entire school day. And when you golf, you just don't realize that it takes up an entire day. I was a twosome today. And we were buzzing through a busy field of golfers today, a colonial, me and my buddy Andrew. and just I'm talking we were just fairway green two putt like we I mean we were four putt for me a couple
Starting point is 00:26:07 times I mean these these fucking things are slick they just had a US open qualifier there only three guys were under only three or four guys were under par I mean we're talking like four under was in first place and these guys are fucking good golfers this is a really tough track when the wind is up and the greens are running like that but I had four different instances where we went through groups so throughout like a pretty quick day. I had that feeling of like having to run up to the T and hit a shot in front of guys that were absolutely judging the fuck out of you. Usually you get like one scenario of that maybe if you're like with a two-sum and you're like you find a group in front of you and you catch up to them. They're like, come on, come hit the shot and then just go through. We're taking our time.
Starting point is 00:26:47 Do this happen to us four times today? Four different times we were just buzzing through. It's a nerve-wracking shot. You know, your heart's racing. You're running up. You're really not I'm doing you don't want to go for your full routine. Yeah, exactly. You're, you're rushing through it. The putt is a rush. And I'm like, dude, we did this for like half the nine hole. I mean, like we like we bear. Do we played 18 holes today in like two and a half hours? We're like we were never stopping. We're constantly just like, oh, we're going to go up there and just hit the ball. Like don't worry about it. Thanks. It's like we didn't even play golf today. We barely even played. It was a constant like we'll just go through you no problem. Obviously. And then you're like, we'll take your time. I'd I love that more than like playing 11. hour rounds at Bethpage but like fuck man that was a crazy crazy day it was just I never got to relax it was I've never really felt that before on the golf course it was crazy it's not a good feeling we uh like me and passionily used to play at piner's we would get a you know get a beer by the 18th green on piner's number two and we would always bet in the hole or not in the hole we do like a dollar
Starting point is 00:27:45 bet like will this person put the ball into the hole or not on 18 it doesn't matter if they make a four doesn't matter if they make an 11 yeah will they scoop it or will they put it into the hole. What do you think, like, how drastically different is the percentage of people that put the ball in the hole when you play through? Like, I feel like no one actually puts the ball into the hole when you play through. Because, like, everyone hits, you know, you lag it up there to a foot or four feet or whatever it is. And then you do the quick, like one leg thing. No one ever makes that put that putt ever. Ever. And then you just grab it and you do like the wave. Like, thank you guys. I take a four there. And you just like cruise through. I feel like no one ever puts the ball in the hole. Oh, my God. Well, you guys were a put and scoop every time. you guys were enjoying your girlfriend. I had some major car trouble today. And I'm just going to, I'm going to go through this very briefly. My car wouldn't start this morning.
Starting point is 00:28:32 So it called AAA. It was not a Chevy and I will definitely be getting a Chevy after this experience. So a car wouldn't start this morning. The guy comes over the AAA guy. He starts the car. He jumps it and he's like, oh, yeah, you must have left the lights on or the radio on overnight because I tested the battery and the battery's fine.
Starting point is 00:28:48 I'm like, I definitely didn't leave the lights on overnight. He's like, no, you probably left the lights on over there. I'm like, okay, fine. He's like, leave it on for 40 minutes. He'll be fine. I left it on for an hour and 20 minutes. I drove to the media parking lot, parked my car, and I said, you know what? Let's try and restart this again because I have a bad idea.
Starting point is 00:29:04 It doesn't start up. So I call him again. He comes over. He's like, oh, yeah, it turns out it needs a new battery. Buddy, you had one job. Your job was to tell me whether I needed a new battery. And I asked him, I said, do we need a new battery? He said, no, it's fine.
Starting point is 00:29:16 You just left the lights on. So not only did he get it wrong, but he made me feel like an idiot for two hours. And then it was, it's all well, he was a very nice guy, Jesse. There's no way you're listening, but thank you for your help. But you got to, you got to nail the initial assessment. You got to be perfect on that first one. That's always, that's always been one of my great complaints with some of our, some of the producers you've had over time where we'll get when we publish a show,
Starting point is 00:29:42 we'll get an occasional couple DMs or something from people or an email that's like, hey man, like, I'm listening to the show and like it's just repeating after like 35 seconds. or it's this segment's going through or it's really glitchy on this and I'll forward that and we'll get like I guarantee his headphones are just fucked up something like well I mean like let's let's like let's kind of lean on the side of like let's try to help our listener right like let's not call our listener a fucking idiot right and be like your equipment sucks and everything you're doing sucks and we did everything perfectly I'm like what's how about we just be like maybe maybe we try to help the person that would always drive me insane of like lead we would always lead with like I guarantee you something's just messed up on their end. I'd be like, okay, okay. Maybe that's the case, but like, shouldn't we want to help them just be able to listen to the show properly without it sounding horrific or unlistenable or something? Like that would always drive me crazy. And I do feel like the audio people do that, auto people do that in the same way.
Starting point is 00:30:39 Yeah, they default to it's your fault, which it wasn't. Right. Speaking of the listeners are one of the commenters here, Eric said, said speech just hit a ball onto Irondicoit. So I don't know if that's true or not, but that's, yeah. he's on 14. He's on 14, so he's on the right hole to do it. I think, yeah, and it looks like he's taking a drop. So I guess he'd he blade one over the 14th green onto a Ronniquet. It's very possible.
Starting point is 00:30:59 It's incredible. I love Arondicoid. Someone else said, who was this? Who was this? Someone mentioned, I can't find it now, but someone mentioned shout out Mito Pereira for like coming back from the dead. He's T-17. He's won over for the championship. But like, after what happened to him in Tulsa, you would think that it would be a Francesco Molinari situation where you really would just would never
Starting point is 00:31:20 see him again. You just forget he exists. But Mito kind of show him back up. He does play and perform well. PGA's clearly. So shout out to Mito for doing that. I just, just seeing his name just kind of send shivers down my spine after thinking about 18. Yeah, he was back in Tulsa last week at the scene of the crime because the live event was in Tulsa last week. Oh, wow. God. Yeah, he tried to hit a flop shot and just sailed it. He had to just drop in the bunker. It's probably on a Rondicoat's 16th hole. Wow. That's amazing. No way. I will say this is the PGA, I think the PGA is kind of found an identity of you just don't know what you're going to get. Like some years, some weeks with the BJA championship, they let you shoot 18 under and it feels like it's not that much different than the buyer Nelson.
Starting point is 00:32:06 Other weeks like this or what they're doing lately, they hammer you, dude. They hit you with the fucking hammer in the forehead. Like this golf course, I'm watching guys, it just feels like, I don't know, 90% of the shots that they cut to. are horrific results, which I love. Like that's the carnage that we root for. That's what we kind of talk about with the U.S. Open. The fact that we're getting into the PGA Championship right now, I mean, JT's like, he's not out of this thing, and they're cutting into him,
Starting point is 00:32:33 and he's putting into him, and he's putting. He's four over the tournament, and it's Friday. It's amazing. It's one of those weeks. It's fun. It's fun when Berties matter. Berties matter this week. Berties are everything this week, it feels like.
Starting point is 00:32:45 Yeah, birdies are everything. All right. Well, look, I'm excited to keep watching. I'm excited for the cartage. I don't, I feel like when the tournaments like this, like at the Massachusetts tournament, when it came down to two guys, it was pretty clear they weren't going to go backwards
Starting point is 00:32:58 or very far backwards. So if those are the guys, those were the guys. Feels like right now I'm looking at Schaeffler, Connors, Hovlin, Keegan Bradley, column Taryn. I mean, obviously people were putting their money on Scotty. Hovlin's a great ball circuit. But like, I don't know, three of those five names could be completely different
Starting point is 00:33:17 when we do the show tomorrow. I mean, it's, yeah, it's one of those weeks we were talking about Victor Hovlin. I think he's about to make a, like a double or something on 14. It's just disaster lurks around every corner. That guy, Kazuki, he got, who started with like four birdies in a row. Is he even making the cut? You know, it's one of those weeks where the tournament feels so long. It's just, you weren't here yesterday.
Starting point is 00:33:38 It was so funny. Like, Dan's tweet being like, how many, because he started out with four birdies through the first five holes, how many birdies would he need to have to start for you to even think he? He is a threat. We said maybe legitimately all 18 and then start out, then start out Friday with another couple of birdies. And then you'd be like, okay, this guy's officially a threat. Like if he was 20 under right now,
Starting point is 00:34:03 I would say, I'm not kidding. If he started 20 under through 20 holes, I don't think I would believe he's going to win the tournament. It's insane to say, but it's very true. Maybe 25. Like if he's 25 under through 25 holes,
Starting point is 00:34:17 I would probably be like, this guy's a problem. Like he might he's going to be a factor. He's burning 25 holes in a row. That was a great treat because like his name I just scrolled right past his name. I was like what? What is this? That's golf every single week
Starting point is 00:34:32 man like you just your eyes gravitate to the names that you just assume to be up there. It's a very weird sport in that fact where like you just you just ignore the potential good stories until they become good stories. You're always just assuming that the favorites
Starting point is 00:34:48 will go to the top and that they will pull through. And at the very end, you're like, holy shit, who won? But until that final ball goes to the bottom of that hole, you're not, you're, you're doubting them the whole way. Since we've been talking, Shane Lowry to one under par, Brooks Keppka to even par, Colin Morikawa to even par. So they're coming, Rigsie. So you're telling me Shane Lowry has birdied like six of his last like eight holes.
Starting point is 00:35:13 I mean, this guy's on fucking fire right now. Five of his last seven. Yeah. the back nine is the back nine's kind of getable that stretch between 10 and 15 you got 14 which is drivable 13 the par 5 and then 15 is like a wedge and the greens are pretty soft so that's the place where you got to make your hay kegan bradley's still in the mix too fucking love that guy i like that guy i got his podcast i don't know if people like really i thought his podcast with us was awesome like a nine it was really weird comment to me and trom that wasn't weird we were just like what
Starting point is 00:35:43 he came up to us at the p j championship he's like i want to kiss the crowd I was like, we were like, all right, we didn't even know what that meant. He came running over the putting green. He's like, might as well kiss the crown. I was like, all right. Yeah. He said the same thing to me at Quill Hollow. He's like, listen, you guys need anything.
Starting point is 00:35:58 Just, I was like, oh, is there like a guy I should text? He's like, yeah, this is my agent, but just, and then he just gave me some of it. He's like, fucking man. He's like, anything you guys want. I'll do it. Anything you want. So he's a guy. He is a guy.
Starting point is 00:36:09 That podcast was like really taught you how the podcast you do with us. How like humble and a pretext. appreciative he is of everything because of his story once you realize his story and like what it actually took to make it he wasn't a speed he wasn't it was like a miracle that he made it and then he won the pGA watch of those highlights from when he won that pGA were all time this is first major yeah atlanta athletic club yeah absolutely first major brooks kepka is even parties t 10 that guy's fucking making a charge too this is gonna be a fun weekend our boy kazuki higa is now four over for the tournament he's two over for on the day this is this is fucking making a fun weekend this is guy, I'm telling it. It's not bad, but I'm saying, like, he was leading the PGA handedly for a little bit. By like four shots. And it's nothing against him. That's amazing playing.
Starting point is 00:36:58 But like you said, I mean, I guess I think a lot of it is golf has a golf has a way of within each week, variance overcomes like flukes, right? Like in sports, most team sports, any given day or any given series in baseball, right? They play
Starting point is 00:37:17 three game series all time. Any team can kind of get hot and like, but over the course of 162 or 82 games, like variance is going to be overcome by like the teams are just better. Like the better team's going to prevail over 80 games or 160 or whatever it is. In golf, it's like each week at any given moment,
Starting point is 00:37:35 nine whole stretch, variance is most likely going to just overcome and the better play. That's why you can't. That's why when JT comes from seven back, it's like, well, like it doesn't that that pot on 18 was just as important. as the put on Thursday morning at 8 a.m.
Starting point is 00:37:49 Like, it doesn't really matter. It's like the guy's just playing better golf for 72 holes of golf is a lot of holes of golf with different conditions, different emotions, different. Everything's different. And like, if you're just better at, if you're, if you're a tenth of a stroke better than the other player on every hole over 72 holes, like you're just going to defeat them every time. It's like in one tournament, it's super hard to predict.
Starting point is 00:38:10 But you kind of know who's going to be there at Eastlake every year. You know, you kind of have an idea because if there's enough tournament, if you had one tournament that lasted the whole year, you've got a pretty good idea of who's going to be in the top 10. You're right. The differences are really small, and that's why they play 72 holes or 54 some places. Right.
Starting point is 00:38:28 All right, boys, I'm excited to watch this last couple holes today. I'm excited for fireball whiskey. I'm going to go over to my nephew Robbie right now. He's demanding that I facetime him and tell him when I'm going to come home. We've got to wrestle. We've got to talk about dinosaurs and fight and all kinds of good stuff. So I've got a hell of a night ahead of me.
Starting point is 00:38:46 but we got a great weekend. I think this thing, I said at the beginning of the show, I think this thing needs a little bit of juice. The hot mics are adding a lot of juice, which I like. The hot mics are having a great week. And there's a lot of names that are still in this thing, especially if people come back just a little bit.
Starting point is 00:39:00 If we get these leaders looking at, like instead of being six under, that it's three, four, five under leading this event, those guys that are at one, that are at two, that are at even, are very, very in this tournament. So we could have a hell of a weekend. I'm pumped. I'm going to go back out there right now.
Starting point is 00:39:15 All right. Great. Cool. We'll be back. Thank you to Fireball Whiskey. Go get yourself some nips. Enjoy yourself. Send them in number one birdie shot in America. Enjoy the tournament. And we're going to come back on tomorrow. Tomorrow during the late part of the coverage, probably while the final groups are playing, the back nine. We'll go live again. We'll chit-chat and we'll do this all over again. So everybody have a lovely Friday night. Hit it hard. Hit it hard.
