Fore Play - Sony Open Winner Patton Kizzire Week

Episode Date: January 16, 2018

Patton Kizzire joins the show just a day removed from his second PGA Tour win at the Sony Open. He details surviving Hawaii's nuclear missile scare (including how other players like Dustin Johnson han...dled the incident), prevailing in a 6-hole playoff, his life after winning 2 PGA Tour events in his last 4 starts, how he celebrated after, and MUCH more. In Headlines and From The Gallery, Riggs, Trent and Frankie breakdown the ridiculous "limited" Sunday coverage, if it's better to watch an event live or on TV, and if it's a hardo move to still use persimmon woods. Note: we're just a week away from Tiger's 2018 debut! You can find every episode of this show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube. Prime Members can listen ad-free on Amazon Music. Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, 4Play listeners, you can find us every Tuesday and Thursday on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or YouTube. Prime members can listen ad-free on Amazon Music. Getting into week three now of 2018 golf season, Tigers and be back in less than two weeks. We had some drama in Hawaii. We're going to get to all of that. First of all, this episode of 4Play is brought to you by our friends at Dollar Shave Club. By now, everybody knows Dollar Shave Club ships phenomenal raisers for just a few bucks. I've been a member for a long time.
Starting point is 00:00:29 Trent's been a member for a long time. We shave all the time. Our faces look nice and smooth. Thanks to our friends at Dollar Shave Club. Well, you might not know. I didn't know. Trent didn't know. Frankie didn't know. Dower Shave Club also has products for pretty much everything else you could possibly imagine.
Starting point is 00:00:43 Body Wash, shampoo, hair gel, lip balm, everything you could need. As soon as I heard, Dowrashave Club has the stuff other than Razors, I was sold. Obviously, you're going to go to the store. There are going to be too many options. I hate that. I hate options. I'm terrible at making decisions. I'm terrible in stores in general, which we've talked about before.
Starting point is 00:00:57 You're a man. Of course you have trouble with that type of stuff. Horrific in stores. I'm the least efficient person in a store. Like especially, I go to grocery shopping. I'll go to, like, one aisle on the far right side of the store. I'll be like, oh, I need, like, peanut butter. That's on the far left. And then the next thing I know is on the far right, happens a whole time. You got to do it systematically. I just go up and down every single aisle and pick out the stuff that I, that looks like I need.
Starting point is 00:01:14 See, I go in itemized and then go like in that order. Okay, yeah. No, you can't do that. Unless you know the grocery store and you know the order that's going to go in. Which I never do. Right. Anyways, we're bad in stores. you don't have to go to stores with Dower Shave Club.
Starting point is 00:01:28 You got any questions? The clerk obviously never knows the answer. Another reason I don't like stores. Dollar Shave Club makes it easy. They make it convenient for you to upgrade your shave and your bathroom. You don't have to step foot in a single store to get your high-quality shave and grooming products. Dollar Shave Club will deliver them right to your door. Just like the Razors, everything else that we talked about is super high quality.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Left me looking, feeling amazing. Premium ingredients and sophisticated sense, Dollar Shave Club is changing the game. you're like me, you're sick of the nonsense, it is time to try out to our shave club for a limited time. They're giving away their shit shower shave starter kit. For new members, for only five bucks, this set features exclusive razor and three trial-sized versions of their most popular products that help you stay fresh and clean. In your first box, you will receive shave butter, body wash, and one wipe Charlie's butt wipes. Keep that butt nice and fresh. You will also receive their executive razor, which includes their premium weighty handle and full cassette of cartridges.
Starting point is 00:02:28 After the first box, replacement cartridges are sent for only a few bucks a month. This offer is exclusively available at dollar shaveclub.com slash four. That is dollar shave club. Dot com slash four, F-O-R-E. Dollar Shave Club's high-quality products will have you covered from face to cheeks, from face cheeks to butt cheeks. Love it. That's my favorite tag. No better time to try the club.
Starting point is 00:02:51 How about that butter? That shave butter. Colin shaving cream butter is, whoever came up with that is a marketing genius. That was like the biggest moment in Dollar Shave Club's career. Their trajectory. Yeah. Their history, trajectory from there,
Starting point is 00:03:04 just skyrocketing when they changed it to butter. Between butter and then face cheeks to butt cheeks. That's. Just grabs you. It does. Oh, yeah. It really does. It's different.
Starting point is 00:03:13 This episode of Four Play is also brought to you by E-Harmony, which I have signed up for recently. We are on it. Trenton. I'm on e-harmony. We're using it. We're single guys in New York. Right. That's buzzing. That's the thing. I moved to New York. You moved to New York.
Starting point is 00:03:30 We're new men in a new city. Going out to bars can be kind of a drag meeting people. You don't want to meet. You don't meet the people. You don't meet the people. E-Harmony, you meet the right people. You know what else, too, Trent? There's a bunch of hook-up apps out there. Don't be shallow. Don't just be looking for hook-up apps.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Go meet some real people. So compatible people for you. Yeah. People go on Tinder and stuff. That's for the shallow people. E-Harmony. What are you in college? Like, come on.
Starting point is 00:03:52 Yeah. Find a real person. They are built to help you find lasting, meaningful relationships. It brings compatible people together. Starting point is 00:04:16 But when you're ready to fall in love, who's ready to fall in love? I am. That's why I'm buzzing. Frankie's got a girlfriend, so. Frankie's in love. What's it like to be in love, Frankie? Oh, boy. I'm looking forward to seeing you guys feel the same way.
Starting point is 00:04:29 It's bubbly. It's happy. You look like a happy guy. You get to go to Italian restaurants where they wave flags in the air? I went to an Italian restaurant where every single five seconds they sang a happy birthday Italian song, and everyone in the entire restaurant waves a towel above their head. Come on. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:45 I mean, it sounds happy. I don't know. I mean, it started to get to a point where I, actually wanted to jump out of my seat and run through the window and run away and never come back. Maybe it's not good for this advertising. But, because every time you're having a conversation, you're like, hey, did you see? And all of a sudden you hear, bum, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb.
Starting point is 00:05:03 And then you're like, you're waving the towels. And then you're like, all right, that was fun. And then two seconds later, you're like, all right, let's get back to the story. So I was doing, boom, bomb. I'm like, no fucking way. So then you're done. You're like, they won't do it three times. There's not three people in this building that have a birthday.
Starting point is 00:05:18 Yeah. They did it 21 times. 21. Hey, let me say this, though. If you are going to get out, if you are going to get up and run away, you want to run away with somebody, you don't want to run away alone.
Starting point is 00:05:28 True. Yes, so when you are ready to have a meaningful relationship, there's one app that's built to bring you real love, and that's E-R-Mony. Come see how E-R-Harmony can change your life. Go to E-Harmony. Go to E-Harmony. Go to E-Harmony.
Starting point is 00:05:41 All one word at checkout. And just go fall in love. Foreplay for E-Hominy. I love that kind of. Any ladies out there that are, or listen to this show. If you're a New Yorker, you might find Dretton I. We're buzzing on E-Harmine.
Starting point is 00:05:54 We're out there. We're out there. So if you want to find us, it's the perfect. Imagine typing in four play into your E-Harmony account. You're ready to go. You're in good shape. You're like, yeah, you're from beginning. Just from the start, you're already ahead.
Starting point is 00:06:10 All right. We got a big week this week. We have joining the show later, Pat and Keziar, who just won for the second time in four starts. We've got in less. in less than two weeks Tiger Woods makes his 2018 debut at Torrey Pines where he's won eight professional tournaments
Starting point is 00:06:26 we got a bunch of headlines we had the coverage on Golf Channel last night of the Sony Open we're going to get into in pretty good detail it was incredible it was must watch stuff we got a bunch of stuff in from the gallery
Starting point is 00:06:42 including does Caitlin Jenner play from the men's T's or from the women's teas and is it fair if she does play from women's T's. We got a lot of good stuff. Let's start with the Sony Open. So Pat and Gizier wins on the sixth playoff hole over James Hahn.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Look, the playoff was great. It was heavily, heavily overshadowed the entire thing by the coverage. The coverage was the storyline. Well, I was going to say, yeah, we can sit here and talk about Pat and Gizier and James Hahn, but all anybody wants to hear about
Starting point is 00:07:11 is the dog shit coverage that we got. And we're going to get into it with Pat and Gzier. We have them on the show, so we don't have to spend too much time on it here. like I said he won two times and four starts he's on a heater he was out celebrating he experienced the hawaiian missile thing which we're going to get into as well so we talked to about that we're going to get to do it pat and desire however this coverage the whole so it was a weird day in that this broke kind of midday while everybody's watching football like one or two o'clock it broke that golf channel is in a labor dispute with their cameramen and audio folks the crew walked out on the coverage. Did we ever get details on what the labor dispute is exactly about? You know, I saw a couple of them responding to some tweets.
Starting point is 00:07:56 It sounded like, it looked like these were folks that work in the camera crew. And it was about, you know, certain health insurance and things of that nature. I guess they're represented by some union is what I kept seeing in all of the different articles about it. And so none of us are knowledgeable enough to really, we're not picking sides or anything like that. Bottom line is they decided to take their stand. They've been negotiating, it sounds like, for about nine months, decide to take their stand, walk out. I love that they decided to take their stand in Hawaii.
Starting point is 00:08:27 In Hawaii. It was great. It was great. In the other tournament, you're just like, should we walk out today? And like, no, we got Sony open coming up. Let's do it then and go chill at the beach. Let's all go to Hawaii on a company trip.
Starting point is 00:08:39 Yep. And then playoff football is going to be on all day Sunday. So we are going to walk out of the job and basically just chill at this. swim up pool and drink some my pies and hang out all day and make like this big public statement. I love the visual of like these big rig camera men like that are like just grizzled veterans of just holding these massive, massive pieces of equipment just sitting at the pool with like Hawaiian shirts on sipping on pinocaladas with the little the little umbrellas in the drink and just have they have no care in the world.
Starting point is 00:09:10 I envision them too. Like I envision them like grabbing the bartender being like, hey, can you toss on golf channel for a minute? And they flip over and they're just dog shit coverage and they're like shit face. They've been drinking to the pool all day. They're like, look at this. They're not even close. And hopefully, yeah, and hopefully you'd have people like over here and being like, why is this golf coverage so bad?
Starting point is 00:09:29 And they're like, because we're not there, motherfuckers. Oh, yeah. They're soaking it up. Like every little, every new notch that it took towards being worse and worse, these guys are like high five and each other. They're fistpup. And I'm sure they were, they were probably spinning all day. searching on Twitter tweets that were sent at Golf Channel about their coverage and all that.
Starting point is 00:09:51 I don't know how labor disputes work, but if they're trying to prove their value to the company, I'm sure there's a lot more that goes into it. You watch yesterdays, and they're like, you guys can be able to get paid whatever you want. Because when you don't have the normal guys, the coverage is horrendous. Yeah, it was really interesting. It really highlighted how important those guys are, what all goes into covering something like a golf tournament. I mean, something as simple as when guys hit approach shots and they didn't have microphones and audio set up on the crowd. So a guy would hit an approach shot in there to like six feet and you didn't hear anything.
Starting point is 00:10:26 And usually they like pipe up the crowd noise and that's how you learn that like, oh, it's this exciting event. He had a great show. Everybody's jacked up. Not a fucking peep. Couldn't hear anything. And then you've got the playoff holes in their teeing off. You're just, we had talked about this a little earlier off camera where you become accustomed to watching a golf tournament or you know. A guy's going to tee off, so you're going to be behind them, and you watch the tracker,
Starting point is 00:10:47 so you kind of know where the ball's going. They didn't do any of that. They just did aerial shots with a T-shots. It looked like we were spying, like... It was like someone that was on the moon watching the Gulf Star. Or when you used to watch Channel 1 and the bombers would go over, like, Afghanistan, and that's what it looked like. You were, like, looking through this lens where you could barely see anything.
Starting point is 00:11:06 And you're trying to track the ball. They couldn't find it. It was unbelievable. Yeah, I looked at it in my brain. Like, there was, like, an alien on the moon with, like, a telescope watching the playoff. Couldn't hear anything. Like when the guy would hit his T shot, usually they have, again, the microphones all up on the T. And when they hit it like it, like emphasizes the sound.
Starting point is 00:11:23 It makes it sound like they hit the loudest golf shot ever. You couldn't hear a peep. You just like you had the blimp view and you just saw the ball go and then the blimp like half the time could follow it half the time. It couldn't. You had no reference points. The ball's in the air and you're like, this is out of bounds left or it might be right down the middle of the fair way. I have no idea. Well, and who that really fucks over other than the audience is the guy is announcing it because you depend on that,
Starting point is 00:11:44 the crowd noise kind of filling up and so you don't have to talk. This time it was just dead air and they had to fill it in with like, oh, great shot. And it was very odd. So it was interesting in that they, it was, I'd be really curious
Starting point is 00:11:59 how the ratings were because it was kind of had a train wreck thing where you can't look away and all that, all those types of cliches. Well, that's, yeah, that's been our argument whenever like a Lexi Thompson thing happens. Like it's horrible and it's like not enjoyable, but it's also really fun to watch. Yeah, and so it was also a byproduct of this that they could only film a couple holes or a handful holes or whatever was that they would just stick with a group a lot of the time.
Starting point is 00:12:24 So it was sort of interesting actually to watch guys go through their whole pre-shot routines and stuff. It made it way harder on the guys. So it was George Sabaricus and Billy Kratzer, who were amazingly in studio in Orlando covering the tournament in Hawaii. they were the ones commentating and covering the live coverage. I was thinking about that. I don't know why that makes it
Starting point is 00:12:49 sounds so hard to do, but there just has to be like some, a big difference between you're not sitting on the course as opposed to you're sitting thousands of miles away. I don't know what the huge difference is, but there's got to be a massive difference. Yes, and they didn't have any of the on-course reporters, right? So usually you've got Farity or you've got Rolfing
Starting point is 00:13:07 or somebody running up to the ball in the playoff and being like his lie looks like, this in the rough. I'm showing you the view while the guys are walking up because they got dog shit else to cover. None of that. So it's just these two poor guys who, you know, I saw him kind of responding a little bit on Twitter. We are, we are trying to get George Chavarikas on the show who I've mixed it up with a little bit. Really good guy was talking with him a little bit and saw him doing some some tweeting basically that when they woke up yesterday, he was planning on going in, you know, he sort of does a lot of the hosting of Golf Central and things like that. And all of a
Starting point is 00:13:39 and he's got to cover live golf from Orlando that's going on in Hawaii. So those guys had a wild day and they did the best they possibly could. Well, then it's one thing to just cover the tournament. You just, you do whatever you can to get the hell out of there. And then it goes to six playoffs. Six holes of playoff, which not only were they struggling to find shit to cover because they could only cover so much for the first whatever four hours of coverage, then it was just two guys on the whole golf course.
Starting point is 00:14:03 It was almost, I couldn't wait for it to end, but I also was sad afterwards because of how much action there was. I mean, there was a lot of traction on Twitter, on tweets and stuff like that, so I assume a lot of people were paying attention. But, man, it was wild. It really, it made you really appreciate all that goes into actually making golf coverage interesting. Like, when they panned like the whales out in the ocean and shit and they've got music. That stuff makes, I guess, makes the coverage awesome.
Starting point is 00:14:30 I'm a huge pre-roll guy. They weren't doing any of that, and the coverage was just horrific. I love when, like, at any event, they show, like, the city. Like, sometimes they just show things that aren't even close to the event. And it's just like, wow, like, it makes you think, like, they're, like, playing in the middle of Manhattan. Meanwhile, they're at, like, Trump. Yeah. Very point.
Starting point is 00:14:47 Right. Or, yeah, like, when they do that during football games, when they do the flyover of the city. Oh, my God. I always hate because I'm trying to pick out certain buildings, and then they cut away too quick. And I'm like, no. My favorite one ever was when the islanders used to play, obviously the islanders used to play at the Coliseum, they'd, like pan to, like, a spot of the New York City. Like, we're playing in East Meadow, Long Island. I live down the block from this place.
Starting point is 00:15:09 There's not a building. for miles and you're going to tell me that you're making these innocent people watching in the Midwest like for a national game that this is a New York City game. I'm not kidding you, Frankie, as a kid from the Midwest, I had no idea that the Rangers and Islanders like both didn't both play in Manhattan. No idea. Like to me, those teams literally were like in the heart of New York City. I'm not kidding. Little did you know that I was like walking to games and they're in the middle of a town. And like a couple of years, like when I moved to you, I was like, all right, that's where the Rangers play, where are the Islanders play. You're like way the
Starting point is 00:15:39 fuck out there. I was like, what is that? What are you talking about? At any point when you were watching this coverage did you think, boy, does this look like a barstool production? Yes, definitely. Like, because I've been a part and so of you, Trent, of some production
Starting point is 00:15:55 lapses. Lapses? Lapses. Yeah, we did an entire tailgate show with no sound. We did an entire goddamn show with no sound. I fed a man corn. I forced fed a man corn and no one, no one heard any of the munching. No one saw anything that you were saying.
Starting point is 00:16:13 You, you, I mean, you got a chant for your name, Trent. People were chanting Trent's name from the top of buildings. And no one has that audio. No one heard it. Nope. In the moment it was great, and then it was very disheartening to learn afterwards. So, I mean, when did you guys learn that you did the whole thing in silence? After when we got into the car, Dave, myself and Pat were all heading to...
Starting point is 00:16:35 You were taking a private jet to Indy. Taking a private jet to Indy And we get in the car And I look at my phone And I go Um Holy shit I said people are saying
Starting point is 00:16:45 That they couldn't hear the show And they're like What does that even mean So they just couldn't hear the show I have 10,000 emails Saying we couldn't hear the show I got a text from Marina halfway through the show But I obviously didn't text
Starting point is 00:16:57 Or look at my phone So I didn't know And then I was I've never been happier To not be in a car Than those guys on the way To a private jet Finding out that the show
Starting point is 00:17:05 didn't have any sound I was like, I'm just by myself, I'm so happy. So the vibe from that was that no one was really that angry because it wasn't our fault. It was a production company. So I kind of feel like, like, that's almost like the feeling that these cameramen,
Starting point is 00:17:18 like these cameramen have no remorse for this at all because they're like, fuck. Like, this doesn't go on my record. Like, I'm just... They're just like guns for hire. They're like, they got thrown into an impossible situation. Yeah, the guys that, like, filled in, it's like, you know what?
Starting point is 00:17:32 We put like a dog shit production on, but, like, we had no other option. Like, I'm sure those guys are. pretty happy. With what they have to work with, I bet that was like a miracle that they put that on. What do you think that room was doing
Starting point is 00:17:41 like that production room? Like think about like all business Pete or something. Like everyone's like running around. Like we have no fucking camera man. We have no audio. Like what do we about to do? Are we gonna do?
Starting point is 00:17:48 Like it's literally Sunday and like we're gonna fill four hours of a golf tournament and we have no camera man and no audio. One person just raised their hand like let's go to the sky cam. It's like the sky can. They can't even see anything. It's like we have the option is. Dude I love to the blimp.
Starting point is 00:18:02 Like oh my God. The fucking blimp was hovering and there were times where it would just enter. window where the trees were in the way of the golfer and you just you're like I can't see the golfer like I can't see the glompe I cannot see the golf I can just picture a producer just put in his head and just like oh my fucking guy I have never rooted for someone harder than I was rooting for the blimp guy to find the balls on t-shod. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:22 Find it. Dude got you man just find it and then he finally did but he would usually have hit the ground by that. And there were there were a couple holes where before they got to the playoff there were a couple holes where they were doing the normal like approach shot camera view where the guy follows it in the air and it was 50-fif. It was like, he would like kind of like, he would really shakey and then the ball would enter the frame for a second. Then he'd lose it.
Starting point is 00:18:43 And then he'd do like the really wide pan out when the ball will land on the green and just like hope it hits the green. And then it would. And then he would zoom towards that section of the green. It was great. I'm telling you, if I'm these golf channel camera operators, I'm asking for like a 500% race. Yeah. Just like, look at what happened yesterday. Unless you want that to keep happening, you know, give me a huge race.
Starting point is 00:19:03 I saw a couple people tweet at me being like, if they really want. wanted to make an impact, a huge impact, and get all the leverage in the world. Why didn't they do this in two weeks, like, during Tiger's return? And I was like... Maybe they're not even that, like, means to do it. That's what I thought. They must, in their heart of hearts, care about, like, the product and golf, and be like, we can't do that to people.
Starting point is 00:19:23 That would be vicious. So I hadn't thought about going back to you guys talking about when you see, like, the ocean views and stuff like that. It was this tournament last year where Smiley and Spieth were out in a kayak, like, in the water. Can you imagine if that had happened yesterday? and they're like we have we have smiley and spieth in a kayak out there and we just can't show it we can't show anything they wouldn't even be close to being able to put that out it's like that would be such a missed opportunity so what a what a shit show that was yesterday it was great it was very interesting um moving on we got
Starting point is 00:19:52 some more headlines to cover however we have to remind you that this show is also brought to you by our friends at tommy john so look Tommy job they sent us I have an announcement to make by the way about Tommy John well so do I okay I'm I'm going to go first. I throw out all my underwear over the weekend. Yep. And I'm strictly a Tommy John's boxer brief guy now. Exclusively.
Starting point is 00:20:12 Exclusively. I did. I throw out all my underwear. So am I. I didn't throw mine out because I'm not a crazy person because I'm probably going to need them. But I threw it out. I committed. I will wear these as long as possible until I get more. Like right now I only have three pairs.
Starting point is 00:20:27 I will wear these as long as possible stretch them. I mean, I will wear these every chance I get. So we are all on the Tommy John train now. They are. Their stuff is so unbelievably comfortable. It's so much better than anything else that it's really, it's ridiculous. It's almost, if you only have X amount of pairs, it's almost a massive motivational thing to do your laundry because you don't want to have to delve into any other. Right.
Starting point is 00:20:53 And all you need to do, I wish, everybody needs to get is get one, like, if you wear them one time, you're going to change over to just these. And that's not even a bit. I literally threw out all of my boxers because I was like, I cannot wear anything. but these Tommy Johns. That's what I did. Even producer Brendan here, who he got involved with the perks, Tommy John sent him some gear.
Starting point is 00:21:14 Brendan, what are your thoughts on the Tommy John stuff? I was so excited when I put them on, and then I realized that they are also innovators. They have the horizontal piece flap. You just find it, and it's like right there to go. They do. They got a little flap. It's a amazing.
Starting point is 00:21:29 It's a pouch. It's a pouch, right? Yeah. Like you're a kangaroo with a little pouch. I couldn't believe it. I was like, I thought it was. Somebody made a mistake when I got my pair. I was like, I'm not worthy of these.
Starting point is 00:21:39 Like, these were definitely meant for somebody else. Like, all right, Tommy John guys, they like me. I will rock the hell out of their product. The other phenomenal thing about Tommy John is I traditionally wear, like, athletic spandex when I play golf. Okay. These Tommy John underwear that I have are phenomenal. When you golf, when you walk, if you're going to walk 18 holes, walk 36 holes, the Tommy John underwear and their socks are phenomenal for that. I can't imagine what their socks feel like.
Starting point is 00:22:04 I got the socks. I haven't opened them yet. They're sitting on my dresser. I'm going to wear them tomorrow. They're so good. Everything about Tommy John is phenomenal. If you don't know, they're re-engineered underwear, so you never have to adjust. No more distractions, picking wedgies, re-enraging the goods.
Starting point is 00:22:17 They stay completely nestled at all times. We've tried all kinds of different stuff, as we just talked about trying to get the perfect fit. Tommy John, they're simply the best. There is. That's why we're all endorsing them. That's why we're all jacked up about them. That's why Trent has thrown away everything else he owns, basically. I threw it out.
Starting point is 00:22:32 They got an entire line of comfort clothing. In the garbage. Includes. that stay tucked, socks that never fall down, and just wait until you check out their t-shirts. I even, not even as an undershirt, I just wear the shirt sometimes, and everyone's always like, oh, Riggs, that shirt looks really sexy. Every time Riggs wears that shirt, I tell him it looks nice, and he goes, I'm stunting today. I do say that, stunting.
Starting point is 00:22:52 Yeah, you do. I really enunciate the I-N-G, stunting. So here's what you do. Hurry to Tommyjohn.com. That's T-O-M-M-Y-J-O-H-N.com slash 4-F-R-E. You're going to get yourself 20% off of your first. first order. That's Tommyjohn.com slash four for 20% off Tommyjohn.com slash four. Okay.
Starting point is 00:23:14 So we got to talk a little bit about this nuclear scare, nuclear missile scare. Trent, you blog this. This dad that was just playing golf right through the whole thing was the biggest, it was the most perfect golf guy moment I've ever seen. I was thinking about it and I even put it in the blog like, what are really your options at that point? You're in the middle of a golf course, and you love playing golf. You just find out that you're probably going to die along with everyone else.
Starting point is 00:23:41 So you might as well just stay out there. He parted the last hole. He's buzzing. Keep it going, man. I love that he threw that in the video. Okay, by the way, I can just parred the last hole. I'm blank. He said he hit the shit out of the ball too.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Yeah, he said, like, hit the shizzle out of it or something, didn't he? Shizn it? Shizn it. Okay. This guy was a legend. It's a good point that you just made. I mean, I got one of my really good buddies from college lives out there, and he was, you know, he lives out there with his girl, and he was.
Starting point is 00:24:04 was saying that she was basically, she had called her family crying and said her goodbyes to her family. That's so scary. In New York and stuff like that. What would you do? And he said that she was then, like, panicking and was like, he was a sniper in the Marines. Yeah. And she was like, call your connections.
Starting point is 00:24:23 What do you think I'm going to do? Like, just call the military hotline and they're just going to bring a helicopter in here and save it. It's like, what do you think I'm going to do? And he was like, his final point was like. Yeah, I mean, once they say an incoming news coming, like, what are you going to do? Like, you're either getting hit or you're not. That's pretty much it. There's part of me that if that's happening where I am, I don't even want to know.
Starting point is 00:24:46 Like, setting out that warning is almost like mean. Yeah. When you're like, all right, there's nothing you can do, but take cover, I guess. Yeah, you don't want to like do anything in those like 20 or 30 minutes that you're going to be like, oh, there's no reason to regret anything. Like, I'm going to die and then you survive. There's got to be people out there who, like, tried to rob a bank in Hawaii and then 38 minutes. minutes later they're like shit what if that holds up in court yeah well i mean i thought it was over like what do you want me to do i would say it probably doesn't but you never know not a lawyer
Starting point is 00:25:11 me either it's so terrifying it's very scary it's incredibly scary that that happened someone brought up a good point to me today that i did not even think of about that video the dad walking on the golf course where he was like it's kind of like a scary video of that old guy walking because it's i picture that in a horror movie because he's just like all right well i now know i'm i'm gonna die so I'm just going to keep playing golf. It's only funny after the fact when it's like, all right, he's fine. Everybody's fine. He accepted death.
Starting point is 00:25:39 Yes. That is insane. Very calmly. Very calmly, too, because there are videos if you go back and look at people sprinting in the streets and crying. And this guy's just like, all right, I'm just going to die then. If you saw this. If you see this, like, I'm already gone. Like, holy shit.
Starting point is 00:25:56 Yeah, that was a wild way to start a video. Like, if you're seeing this, I'm gone. Like, oh, Jesus. And you just played golf right through it. It's pretty heavy. That's great. It's great. He's got that.
Starting point is 00:26:07 It's great seeing how all these people reacted that thought they were gone. It's very interesting. Yeah, people react in different ways, for sure. A lot of people running down the street. Just panicking. That's all people jumping into sewers. Sewers. Oh, I don't hate that.
Starting point is 00:26:19 I don't hate that at all. Yeah. That's a good move. Yeah. Just try to get real low. I guess. Yeah, right. Sewer diving.
Starting point is 00:26:25 How mad would you be if you jumped into a sewer? True. True. It's for nothing. It's really tough. It's like I had this sweet, reaction. There's going to be like a people versus Hawaii court.
Starting point is 00:26:36 I'm sure. Like that's emotional distress now. Yeah. Oh yeah. Emotional distress? There has to be people, I'm thinking, in like, doctors offices and hospitals that, like, people just freaked out. Like, what if there's probably more things that happen that we don't know about?
Starting point is 00:26:52 Do you imagine, like a surgeon seeing that or someone being like, yo, like, well, I just got this notification that we're all about. I got to be going to go. Like, we're all about to be just lit up in 25 minutes. Yeah. what could you be doing that would be super time sensitive that like you'd be, you know, I'm trying to think. What would be like the worst thing you could be doing? I would, I would assume Braden surgery. Like, hey, you have to fix this person, but it doesn't matter because in 25 minutes, we're all going to be blown up anyway.
Starting point is 00:27:20 All right. Let's get back to some ball. That's still. That's heavy. Yeah, it is. So, Roy McElroy. He's playing this week, Abu Dhabi H.SBC Championship. Pretty good field out there, actually.
Starting point is 00:27:30 We got Rory, Henrik Stenson, DJ, Kooch. our buddy Ian Poulter, just to name a few. So Rory had a couple interesting comments. He said this could be his busiest year yet. And he said depending on how far he goes in the race to Dubai, he could play as many as 30 events this year. That would be great. That would be ideal.
Starting point is 00:27:50 The game needs Rory. It's always better with him. It does. And, you know, there's long been this narrative about Rory that he gets a little complacent. And so him being like, you know, this is going to be my busiest year at. he's a year yet. He's coming back from an injury plagued 2017, going to play potentially
Starting point is 00:28:08 30 events. It's very, very exciting. And it's all, you know, it's all doing, Trent. It's all adding to this belief that we've all had coming to 2018 that this year is just set up to be the most epic year for professional golf that maybe we've ever seen in our lifetime. Yeah, I mean, all the big names are lining up thus far. Everything's going pretty well. You got Tiger coming back. Rory saying he's finally healthy. It's looking very, very good. So we've also got the Career Builder Challenge going on over in Cali. We got John Rom, Brian Harmon, Phil's playing. Pat and Keziar, our guy is playing Kevin Kisner, also our guy, Duff Daddy, ZJ.
Starting point is 00:28:43 Bottom line is the reason I brought all this up. A lot of good places to watch some golf. It's always nice with the Aby-Dobby stuff because that stuff's on like crazy, crazy early hours in the morning. I even remember when we launched this podcast around this time last year was when Tiger was playing in Dubai, and I had mentioned that I'd come home drunk one night and gotten McDonald's at like 2 a.m. And turned on and there was Tiger just playing golf live on TV.
Starting point is 00:29:07 Yep. So you could catch some of those windows if you have a chance. I've also been to Abu Dhabi, I would like to say. Oh, you told that story once on the podcast, I think. Yeah, I've been to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It's very interesting place. Yeah? In terms of what?
Starting point is 00:29:22 Well, Abu Dhabi is significantly more conservative than Dubai, even though they're only like an hour apart from each other. Okay. So Abu Dhabi kind of feels like, it's one of those things where like when you're, when you're an American in a foreign country, they say that like you could dress and act however you want. Everyone just knows that you're American. Right. And that was like times a billion when I was in, you know, Abu Dhabi, like all part of the UAE. I can't get over the name of that place.
Starting point is 00:29:50 It sounds like the most far place on earth. Abu Dhabi sounds like it's not even on earth. Don't you have to take a 16 hour flight? It was. It was like. It was, I believe it was like, it was like 17 one way and like 15 or 14 and a half the other day. Nope. But their plane was awesome.
Starting point is 00:30:09 They give you like almost like your own little. Like a pod? It's not like a full pod, but it's in terms of all the amenities that it has. It's like a full entertainment system. The other thing I didn't realize that it's full open bar on these planes. So basically I went through like, I went through like I had three different days of experiences because I would like get a couple drinks. watch a movie, pass out, like get up, get a couple new, like be a little bit hungover, have a couple more drinks, watch another movie, pass out, right?
Starting point is 00:30:38 Then you're only like eight hours into the trip. You still have like seven to go. Holy shit. Then I would do the whole thing over again. I went through like three or four different days of experiences. But they've got like this whole entertainment system with every movie you can imagine. Then they got all these different outlets and like really good internet and all that. So it's basically like you're at home for the whole day except it's just like a little less comfortable and not private.
Starting point is 00:30:57 Hmm. That doesn't sound so bad. I, going into that, I hate long flights. I hate like four-hour flights. I couldn't even imagine. It was, yeah, I mean, you know, I fly well. I'm a big sleeper on flights. You fall asleep even before you take off. Yeah, so I slept a lot of time and all that, and I was really excited. And the whole trip was free.
Starting point is 00:31:14 So I was like dating this chick that worked for this, that's consulting firm and part of the deal was they would fly like a significant other. So we convinced them that I was a significant other. Flew out there for free. So I was there for like four or five days. just living it up basically just like Riggs and Abu Dhabi and Dubai living it up so it was a great time but anyways we also have to mention that this podcast is brought to you by four hymns now this is a improve your health improve your men's
Starting point is 00:31:44 health improve your whole life type situation it's 2018 our guy Trent Daddy is on a big mission we're trying I'm trying to improve myself in every single aspect of my life you know one thing this isn't about for him's but I'm returning to text more. Anybody need help on their hair? I think they're all pretty good. No, we're doing okay, but I mean, I could, I've been, I would say I started losing my hair to a certain degree, like in my early 20s. Yeah, I guess I could use some help on the hair. I need some help on the hair line. That's really what I need.

Okay. So For Hymns, they have a lot of different stuff, all this sexual wellness, skin care, all this great stuff.
Starting point is 00:33:21 Do you think they're kind of sending a message at us that they really really? had us highlight the hair loss thing? Yes. I think so. Unfortunately, yes. I think that was a real shot. We've, from our friends at Four Him at the Foreplay Boys.
Starting point is 00:33:35 I mean, we've done, we've had four hymns and E-Harmony. So what do you think they're saying about this podcast? It's just really interesting. I'm looking at all this stuff that they offer, and they list it, and then the rest of it is like, but really focus on the hair loss stuff.
Starting point is 00:33:50 What? That's just a straight shot. It hurts. Wow. All right. It's a reality check. That's how, I mean, we're really going to improve our hair situation, I guess, this year. I like to think that these things came into a system before I started becoming.
Starting point is 00:34:06 Yeah, well, you're young. You're the young. You're the young. I don't want to take that. No. Yeah. No, you got the whole young and situation going on. You're doing fine, Frankie.
Starting point is 00:34:13 Although the office does buzz every time you don't wear a hat. They're like. I know. And I also can't do these shaving things because I just don't grow facial hair. So it would be, just wouldn't make sense. Yeah. I go a little bit. But if I grow up for like two weeks,
Starting point is 00:34:25 you can call me Francisco. I would say... It's, like, bad. I could see how it could get bad. I would say the foreplay advertisements were kind of curtailed to us pre-Frank. Yeah. It'll be interesting to see if anything comes in
Starting point is 00:34:39 for, like, a baby face. It would be, yeah. Like a moisturizer? Yeah, right, exactly. Or maybe, like, how to, like, how to, like, densify your facial hair. Right. Imagine they're just, like, grow a beard for men.
Starting point is 00:34:52 It's broken for your face How to grow a beard for boys Did I tell you? Yeah, this was Pizza Boy Yeah, I got called Pizza Boy at a concert Did you smack that person? I think that was the most degrading thing That's ever been said to it.
Starting point is 00:35:09 Didn't he say it too? Like, oh, what's up, pizza boy? He's like, yo, it's up, Smitty. What's up pizza boy? Nope. You just got a fight. I know you're probably not a fire. I'm a mer man.
Starting point is 00:35:17 No, I think you should slap that person. I'm a mer man. That's exactly how I felt. That's how you should slap that. person. That's like the one time a man should slap another. Yeah, we don't have... Just like... Yeah, we don't have... Like, not hard and like... Yeah, right. Not hard and like malicious,
Starting point is 00:35:30 like, really like, like a masculating slap. Like degraded him. Yes. Uh, what's his name got slapped like that? Yeah. Uh, Weinstein. Right, that's the exact move. A little two slap. It's like, just a slap. Right. Like, you'll remember this one. That's like a fucking hurt, but you'll remember this one. Right. That's a fuck you slap. Fucker. Did it. Right. That's what that is. All right. Pizza boy. On from the gallery, which is brought to you by our friends at four hymns who are sending Trent and I messages, apparently.
Starting point is 00:35:52 First question, this is from Nick. Really simple one. Does Caitlin Jenner play from the men's teas or the women's teas? I just don't know how to answer this. I don't either. I really, I don't know how to answer this either. Is this the one that you said I need to do preparation for because I just don't know how to answer this one? So what I would say is it gets really tricky.
Starting point is 00:36:13 It gets hairy. Because, nice. It gets hairy because If she's like It's so uncomfortable in this room right now Are you Are you like a bigot If she says I'm gonna play from the women's tees
Starting point is 00:36:27 And you're like I mean You're a man Like I just don't know I don't know what to say You know what She has to play from the man's teas
Starting point is 00:36:38 I think she has to I don't know how else you can say She's a male Olympic athlete Olympic athlete There's no way She can play from the women's teeth. There's highly competitive. I used to watch the Kardashians all the time.
Starting point is 00:36:54 Oh, me too, yeah. And Bruce was a very competitive golfer. Right. He was, yeah. Let me say this. So Saturday, Bruce is out there mixing it up with the boys playing for the men's teas. Tuesday has the surgery becomes Caitlin. Next Saturday, she's just playing from the women's tees?
Starting point is 00:37:11 No. No. That's not fair. Get the fuck out of here. No chance. she wouldn't want it that way either no I don't know I mean you know I can't speak for her
Starting point is 00:37:20 I don't know I have no idea the next question becomes are you rude if you're like she says yeah I'm gonna play for the winst season you're like I mean Caitlin come on all right so you're in L.A what are you doing you're in L.A
Starting point is 00:37:35 and you get invited to a real nice country club Beverly Hills Country Club and you're with a guest and you're paired up with Caitlin right You guys are playing a match. Right. I mean, what do you say?
Starting point is 00:37:49 Yeah. I say, like, hey, like, buddy. I mean, like, that's what I wouldn't say. Trent under the table. Trent is physically under the table right now. Listen, my buddy. I just think that's how it. Listen, bro.
Starting point is 00:38:17 I don't know what else you say to her, this point. You can't. You just can't let that happen. I don't think. You're going to get crushed. Listen, bro, you got to just, you just got to, you just got to, these are real life questions. I'm not, I mean, listen, it's a tough situation.
Starting point is 00:38:35 I don't know. I guess, I don't know. All right. And people have been in this situation, I guarantee. That's what I think. Oh, yeah. I don't think it's, yeah, Caitlin still plays a lot of golf, I think. A lot of golf, right?
Starting point is 00:38:46 Right. I don't think it's, it's, it's an outrageous question, but it's, it's a, it's an outrageous question, but one that people have had to face. It's a tough one. All right. Next one, Robert. This one, this one sort of, well, he says, what's better watching a tour event live? Or is it better to watch a tour event on TV?
Starting point is 00:39:07 Now, the reason I thought this is a good one to bring up is because we get asked all time, why aren't we at this tournament, why aren't we at that tournament? And the answer to that question is generally very simple, which is that we don't get much added value out of being at tournaments because you can pretty much only follow two people at the same time, especially during weekend coverage. And it's a lot of it's luck-based. I mean, if you just happen to follow the right group the right day and that person goes low and ends up winning the tournament or taking the lead, sure, but if you're following any
Starting point is 00:39:35 other group on the property, what you're tweeting about, what you're talking about, what you're covering, blah, blah, blah, isn't going to be the most pertinent news. So for us, based off what we do, it generally doesn't make a ton of sense for us to be in events. a couple of things for people that aren't us. It depends on the event, obviously, and it depends if you've gone to an event or the event before. Because I think going one time is really fun,
Starting point is 00:39:59 seeing the players up close. And picking a group is kind of like a thing, like, we're going to follow these guys because I think they're going to have a good day. But if you've been to the event or you've been to an event and been like, that was fine, I think watching it on TV is better for even the people who don't have our jobs for the same reason as our job.
Starting point is 00:40:15 Because you get to watch everything, as opposed to just having to sit there and watch one group you hear roars from across the course and you're like shit i wish i knew what was going on i wish i was over there with the tv you obviously don't have to worry about that minus you know the coverage of the sony open you just get to watch everything yeah the other thing is if you haven't if it if you haven't seen the course before it's really cool to go see the course yes you know like when the u.s opened to chinococ this summer that's going to be awesome for a lot of people to go and see that course see it up close, be standing on a lot of those teas and be able to kind of see the shots and see
Starting point is 00:40:48 the views that those guys have, et cetera, et cetera, seeing the greens. That's what made going to the masters. So unbelievable was actually seeing the golf course. I mean, even if we went four hours before play started and just walked the course and then left, it would have been incredibly worth it just to go there and actually see the golf course. See, that goes back. Actually, I was going to bring this up.
Starting point is 00:41:05 That goes back to last week's from the gallery when you were saying, would you play, yeah. Would you buy your plane ticket, fly down there, play opposite hand and fly back? I asked all my buddies is this, and they're like, that's the dumbest question ever. They'd absolutely go, they'd absolutely go get a chance to just walk the course and like putt and like see the course. I was like, fuck. I mean, for us, it was different because we've been there. So it's like, do you want to waste the whole weekend and the money on something that you've already done and also have a horrible experience playing?
Starting point is 00:41:33 Yeah. I think the main, the best thing to do, the most optimal way to watch golf tournament is to go for maybe Friday and Saturday. and see it up close check it out be part of the scene on Saturday get there early have some drinks on that and then go home Saturday night or Sunday morning back to your residence and then just watch it conclude
Starting point is 00:41:55 on Sunday on TV and now many people have the Sunday experience that I had you had an unbelievably I got lucky which for anybody hasn't caught that there's an entire podcast on it from the Masters that last April I've often said I can go to a tournament for the rest of my life and never see
Starting point is 00:42:10 what I saw no be able to see all the big moments like that. And not at the Masters. Right. That's incredible. And the fact that you were alone at a tournament, like how nimble you were able to be and how flexible and you can just buzz around. Like, you know, usually you'll have like a girlfriend with you or some buddies and it's like getting everybody to move to one place. That was amazing.
Starting point is 00:42:30 Another thing in the column of actually going to a tournament and this could sound childish for me. But it's cool how close you can actually get to the players. Yeah, it is. Like getting that close to Dustin Johnson and like seeing. Because you talk about you hear he's like, oh, he's athletic, he's tall, he's this, he's that. When you see these guys, it's very cool because Dustin Johnson is like a specimen in person.
Starting point is 00:42:48 And we have that experience with Rory at the Masters where if you find yourself the right place at the right time, you can, you almost feel like you are part of the action because the golfers are so close. Yes, 100%. And it's one thing, if there's anybody out there listening that's thinking about going to an event that's never been before,
Starting point is 00:43:04 one thing I highly recommend is even going to the range for a little bit and watching guys hit balls on the range and watching them on the putting green, which is usually right next to the range, kind of interacting, going through their routine. You can get really close to them. If you stand behind some of these guys on the driving range and actually see the way that they hit the ball,
Starting point is 00:43:22 how consistently they hit it, going through their bag, hitting different shots is maybe the coolest thing in the world. Like, you know, you might grind all day to get really close to Phil Mickelson to see him hit one shot, or you can go stand behind, you know, Adam Scott in the driving range for 20 minutes and see them hit, you know, whatever, 30 or 40 shots and just be like, holy shit. I remember when we were at the Masters, we watched Ricky Putt for a solid half hour, and we're like, oh, he finished off making 12 in a row.
Starting point is 00:43:48 We're like going to bet on him today. So you can kind of get a look into what you're going to see the rest of the day, too. Yeah, another piece of advice is, you know, pick somebody who's maybe not a giant name and just foul them for a whole nine holes and actually, you know, observe up close what it's like to watch one of the, you know, some of the best players on planet Earth just play a round of golf and, like, go through their whole routine. You know, they're going to play some bad holes. They're going to play some really good holes.
Starting point is 00:44:11 They're going to hit some shitty shots, see how they react, blah, blah, blah. So it's, you know, if you do it right, it's definitely worth it. Like I said, to see the course, see guys up close, et cetera, et cetera. It's also, if you do it wrong, it can suck. I mean, you can have a shitty day trying to watch golf live, I think. You could have, like, a really shitty time. Be like, I didn't see anything, basically. Yeah, you could do the complete opposite of what happened to me and just be on the wrong end of every single big moment.
Starting point is 00:44:36 Yeah. It's big, ah, fuck, there's another, like, we miss that one. Then you hear a roar. It's like, God, like, we, we, like, we, Just can't attention. Yeah, even that's Sunday. Had people, like, all the people that shows, like, all right, we're going to follow, it was Spieth and Ricky that were together.
Starting point is 00:44:48 Right. Right. And, like, those people got screwed because those guys weren't even factor in the back nine. Right. So it's like, those guys saw, like, no big moments from that whole day. Exactly. So a lot of it's a luck as well. Next one, Mike says, his friend exclusively plays old equipment, like, we're talking, like,
Starting point is 00:45:04 Persimmon Woods, because he thinks it makes him a better player because he's forced to have a better swing in order to make better contact with the ball. He also owns fully modern, up-to-date equipment, but refuses to use it because he thinks it's much better to use the old stuff. Is this a psycho mover? Is he a genius? Psycho move. I mean, he's a crazy person.
Starting point is 00:45:26 Well, you don't show to a golf course with persimmin golf clubs. It's kind of fire move, though. It's not a fire idiot, but it's like kind of sick. To me, this guy dresses like in full Payne Stewart type outfit. Because here's a thing. And if you're doing that, that's awesome. But here's the thing, though, if he sucks. All right, all right, there's two options that happen when he brings these golf clubs to the golf course.
Starting point is 00:45:46 It's either everyone's going to be like, look at this fucking guy that grabbed grandpa's golf clubs that's never swung in their entire life. Fuck him for even coming out here and wasting my day. I got to match up with this guy, right? That's what you're thinking on the T-box. This is going to be a disaster. Or if he's good, you're like, look at this hardo using these fucking wooden golf clubs. Are you kidding me? I don't think it's hard.
Starting point is 00:46:05 I just think it would come off as like, if this guy comes out of there, he's, He's got like this beautiful fluid, like 1950s golf suites. He's an asshole. And he's hitting persimmon woods and like old hickory shaft irs. I've ever seen him. I'm looking at these clubs right now and I'm like, I'm nauseous. This is a guy who also definitely likes craft beers and like whiskey, like fine whiskeys. This guy sucks.
Starting point is 00:46:26 I didn't think you guys were going to just describe this guy as like a hipster loser. If he's a good... It kind of is that, though. If he's a good golfer, he is. It also has to do with the age. Like, a guy our age doing this looks like a fucking asshole. If an old guy comes out there with all this, it's like, all right, that guy's cool. He's like hearkening it back to the old days.
Starting point is 00:46:44 He likes those clubs. But a guy, our age. If this guy pulled up to me on the driveway range, sits right next to me. You would hate him. No, if he sits right next to me, he does a quick little stretch, pulls out his three wood. And it's an old, like, tiny little person. It's got screws in it. And he starts striping shots with that, I would be like, this guy is fucking awesome.
Starting point is 00:47:06 A lot of it does hinge on if he's good or not. He's a douchebag. I would be like this guy is awesome. What does this part two mean? He says he uses the persimmon woods because he thinks it will make him a better player. I don't even know what that means. Well, that's the theory that you're required, like, you know, your body will learn, since the sweet spot is so much smaller on these older clubs, that your body will learn how to hit
Starting point is 00:47:26 them and you will develop a better switch. Right. Versus like if you have a massive, like room for air. When I hear that, it's almost like the donut on the end of a baseball bat. Yeah. Kind of swinging that. But then it's since he owns this fully. modern equipment, but never uses it.
Starting point is 00:47:40 Look, I think it's a little psycho, but I don't, I wouldn't be like, fuck, this guy's a heart, I think, like, that's pretty sick if you're striping, like, Persement Woods on the driving range. I'd be like, wow, that's pretty sick. But he's bringing them, if he's that good, he's bringing them to show off that he can, do you understand what I'm saying? He's bringing those golf clubs to look like a douchebag, like, oh, I can hit this, I can stripe this thing.
Starting point is 00:48:02 It's, like, sick, bro. Maybe he's an old school purist. Maybe he's an asshole. I tend to agree with Frankie This seems like a very strange thing to do Very strange All right, it's two to one You guys think he's an asshole
Starting point is 00:48:15 Next one really quickly This guy John just asked about my three glove rotation He said where do you store the gloves in between rounds Do you put them back in their package Or do you just hang them on your bag I wanted to answer this because a lot of people ask me this They think I put them back in the package I don't throw the package away
Starting point is 00:48:32 And I either hang them on the I just hang them on my bag outside of my golf bag where they generally go or if it's going to be like rainy or something I'll put them in my bag because I don't want them to get rained on because then they're wet and that's what's the whole point to having three gloves?
Starting point is 00:48:46 Yeah I throw, I mean I'm really bad with my golf gloves I just throw I just crumble them into my bag it's really bad. See I'm like pretty conscious of them all the time yeah I mean actually ever since I saw speed through that thing where he smacks the glove I said that I want to make a conscious effort
Starting point is 00:49:05 to put them, I want to keep the packaging so I can do what he did on every T, on the first T, where he takes, so Speed takes the glove out of the package, and he smacks it against his leg, and he stretches out the fingers. And it's like the coolest little, like, getting ready for a round thing I've ever seen in my entire life. So I want to start doing that. So maybe I'll start keeping the packaging, because I think that is a cool thing to do in the first T.
Starting point is 00:49:25 But as of right now, I kind of just crumble them in a ball and just put him in any, I, I am so into getting things out of my pocket. I don't know why. It's like a, I don't know if it's like a, I don't know if it's like a, fucking thing that I have to do. But on the 18th hole, I have to get everything out of my pocket before I pull up to wherever they're taking the card away from me. I don't know what.
Starting point is 00:49:44 Yeah, I'm that way too. Like, dude, I'll be on the fair way and I'll start taking, like, of the 18th hole and I'll start thinking what I need to finish a hole and anything I don't need, it's already getting put away. I want my exit to be as fast as possible. I don't know what. Like, I'm not one of those guys that, like, public golf courses. you pull it in, you go to the back of your bag,
Starting point is 00:50:07 and then you start taking everything out, you start talking to the cart guy. It's like, I don't want any of it. Well, what I get really, what I can't stand is like if we're going to go do the 19th hole and do like a restaurant and beer afterwards, and then I've still got teas and like a ballmarker. There's no worse feeling. That drives me crazy.
Starting point is 00:50:21 There's no worst feeling in your car and like feeling like a tea in your pocket. And it's like, ah, it's like this is it supposed to be in here. I'll like, I'll pull over to the side of the road, get out, open the trunk and put my shit in my golf. Oh my gosh. it's like my dad comes home from golf he comes home from work sometimes at the restaurant and he'll pull stuff out of his pocket
Starting point is 00:50:40 he has a golf ball in his pocket I'm like how did that happen he's like it's like I went golfing last week I'm like you've been walking around a week with a golf ball in your fucking pocket like he has teas people I don't know how people do it I need my pockets to be my pockets right now are clean
Starting point is 00:50:57 I've gone to the bar before with a golf glove in my back left pocket see now that's we said that's a great move That's a statement. I want that to start being my new fashion. But I'm talking like I've done it from like a couple days later because you take the pants off with your glove in your back left pocket and you don't like think about it. It's big in the summer because you got the shorts. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:14 And I just throw the shorts on the ground or something. And then like I'll rush home after whatever God knows what a couple days later, quick shower, throw on the shorts that I see and my glove is still in the back left pocket. People be like, what are you doing? The glove air pocket. I don't know. It's a conversation starter if nothing else. All right. Next up we got Pat and Kazair.
Starting point is 00:51:29 This interview with Pat and Gzair is brought to you by our friends at Bet DSA. the playoffs are finally here. Heartbreaker for your boy last night. Heartbreaker for the Saints. Go Saints. You didn't have the Saints Money Line or anything, did you? No, which, it's funny because I was going to put a bet in on Saints Money Line, and I decided at the very last second since we have our good friend Kyle Rudolph,
Starting point is 00:51:50 who plays for the Minnesota Vikings and has been on this year program, that I wasn't going to do it, and I didn't. And I will say the heartbreak, it doesn't matter. The money wouldn't matter because I'm a lifelong. Saints fan since about a year and a half ago. Die hard. And I was just, I can't believe. I honestly, I can't even, how do you, how does that happen?
Starting point is 00:52:11 The Marcus Williams play will forever be analyzed as like, what the hell's going on? My dad played safety in high school and he texted me and said that that is the worst play by any safety at any level in the history of football. Well, not to harken back to my old high school football days, but a big thing with tackling is you keep your eyes up. You got to like look at what you're going to tackle. My dad said, he goes, you never put your head down, head up, always eyes up. They used to say eyes to the sky because you just keep looking.
Starting point is 00:52:35 Just keep looking. Never lose the guy. Because it looks like Marcus Williams was going for the big hit or he was trying not to get past interference and he just whiffed completely on the guy. I think in his brain really quickly he said, oh, I'm going to do the old like hit him low and from the side that's going to knock his legs out and then he's going to fall in bounds. Which maybe seemed like a good theory in his brain at the time but turned out to be the worst play I've literally ever seen. He will now, he goes down in history as just the guy who missed.
Starting point is 00:53:01 I mean, if you look at the still shot, they weren't even close to out of bounds. You just wrap them up inbound. Games over. Games over, because, yeah, Minnesota didn't have any timeouts. You can get in each game with betdyesi.edu. That's right. You might notice a little difference there. Bettsi.

Starting point is 00:54:41 where you are we don't ever get up at 7 a.m. so we're very impressed it is a little early long flight and a little bit of sleep but I'm ready roll yeah we're just saying and we're going to wake you up with this convoy. We're going to get you going to get you perky. So you won, it's been about a day and a half since you won. Obviously the last 12 hours or so, you're in California now, I've been traveling. What are maybe the first, I don't know, six, 12 hours look like after, you know, you win the Sony Open? Well, after signing a bunch of autographs and shaking a bunch of hands,
Starting point is 00:55:22 you're trying to get a cocktail in you, you know, a cocktail in you. get some beers, get some food, and, you know, just kind of let it all soak in. So I saw a couple limo shots on the Instagram story. Was that always part of the plan, or are you like, you know, all right, we just, we won some cash, we won a tournament. Let's get wild tonight. Yeah, that was a nice little surprise. I said we have a limo waiting for you. I don't know if that always happens, but, you know, that was a nice perk.
Starting point is 00:55:53 we literally got in the limo and rode maybe 300 yards to the hotel and they dropped us off. Totally worth it. Yeah. That's money well spent right there. Yeah, of course. Yeah, I like that. Tor really bringing it for that 300-yard drive. That's nice.
Starting point is 00:56:17 So we're going to get into the tournament, the playoff, the fact that you've won, I believe two of your last four starts and all that. But I want to back up a little bit. You graduated Auburn in 2008. It's now been almost 10 years. You know, you're just breaking through a lot of guys, a lot of people, a lot of golf fans are sort of hearing about you for the first time in the last couple of months. Walk us through a little bit about, you know, kind of your journey from, you know, an amateur college golfer to now your two-time winner on tour. Well, it has been a journey. That's pretty much.
Starting point is 00:56:54 You know, the only way to describe it, it's been a nice little run. It's been a projection, a grind. I started out pretty slow as a professional. And I was living in Auburn, kind of dipping around a little bit too much and decided to make a move to see Island. and, you know, that's been a big step for me, and that was a big part of my career moving to Seattle and kind of taking a little bit more seriously.
Starting point is 00:57:34 And I was able to start playing a little better. And I was working with Randy Miles and Todd Anderson and, you know, button heads with Lass Love and Rag Johnson. And, you know, it won't so much competition in Seattle. island that you can't have to get better. Yeah, I know. I've then jumped to the web and had some success there. And, you know, I found a cell phone tour and all of a sudden a two-time winner just
Starting point is 00:58:05 every the last month. So it's been a pretty awesome whirlwind. Yeah, I know, you know, you and I got a mutual friend, our boy, Shane, who I met about six months ago. He was telling me a little bit about your relationship with Davis Love. just talk a little bit about, you know, kind of how, I guess, the impact he's had on, you know, your career, your life sort of as a golf professional and kind of taking it to that next level as you talked about a little bit. Yeah, well, Davis is, Davis kind of, he and Mack Barnhart and Bill Jones and David ever kind of, they started Sea Island, basically. are.
Starting point is 00:58:44 They built Sea Island. Without Sea Island, we wouldn't have all the instruction and competition down there. So it's, he's, some people refer to him as the godfather of Sea Island. I don't really, I don't really give him that name. But he's been huge, huge for everybody. just kind of getting it started and setting a precedent and he's he's always willing to help his his focus has kind of gone from golf to to you know family and barbecue he's he found him in a smoker at southern soul more often than the driving lanes so obviously you talked a little
Starting point is 00:59:37 bit about, you know, moving to Sea Island, DL3, the impact he had, just kind of looking back over the last, you know, nine, ten years, are there any moments that you look at as like, man, if that hadn't freaking happened, you know, this would have never worked out, or moments where maybe you were, you know, you were thinking, do I really, do I really have this? Is this really my future? And then something happened or something clicked. Or, you know, you, you had a certain moment, an event where you look back and think, like, man, if that didn't go, the way it went, there's no way I'd be a two-time winner on tour right now. There's a lot of those.
Starting point is 01:00:15 You know, the first time I played with Davis, I was so worried about what he was thinking. I was just standing over the ball just nervous as well and thinking, man, what does he think about me? And then so I was hitting some, I'm pretty sure I shanked one. We're playing Brunswick Country Club. I'm pretty sure I shanked one. one, which is pretty, you know, that makes you feel really good when you're playing with an all-time great player like David Slov,
Starting point is 01:00:48 and you're hitting shanks, and that really boost your confidence. You know, I was able to kind of let that nervousness and uncomfortableness, you know, way away and more I play with them. And that really, you know, just getting more comfortable playing with those guys, I think that was a big step for me. I mean, I don't know if you should be too intimidated with Davis because, I mean, you're pretty fucking tall. You're like, you're way bigger than he was.
Starting point is 01:01:17 Yeah, I am about his size. You guys are both. You know, just if you look up somebody for so long, you just kind of, you know, all he's done. So I was certainly not as comfortable around him as own now. Yeah, it's funny. I've heard, you know, we've had a handful of different guys say, you know, I get more nervous, you know, playing alongside certain guys that I looked up to than I do down the stretch of a tournament or those types of situations. Yeah, you try not to care what other people think, but yes, it's human nature to have that in the back of your minds. I was
Starting point is 01:02:02 sitting with a fellow PGA tour player yesterday on the plane to L.A. And he said, man, there's just two guys that really, I just want to play well so bad in front of
Starting point is 01:02:20 that it just hurts me. And Duffner was one of them. So I think I think Duff has that that judgmental attitude and playful you know he likes to rid you pretty good so you know you always like to play well in front of him so you can do too much shit that's really funny it's uh it's amazing i have i've told this story on the show before but i have a buddy and you know his dad they live down in the orlando area i go down once or twice a year and play golf with him and man i always play
Starting point is 01:02:56 like complete dog shit whenever i play in front of my buddy's dad and he thinks i'm I'm just the worst golfer in the world. Yeah. If you try too hard playing you off, that normally ends up a rough day. So a couple months ago, the OHL Classic, Myacoba, you know, you break through, you get your first win.
Starting point is 01:03:19 Everybody always talks about, you know, what that first win really means to somebody. You, as we kind of talked about, a journeyman, you've been through it all. You know, it was a long, hard road to get here. what does it really, you know, mean to you when you get that win, even maybe a couple days afterwards when it really settles in, you know, career-wise, personal, maybe even competition, you know, with yourself in terms of like, yeah, hell yeah, I knew I could do this. You know, what all does that really, what all comes with it to you when you sit down and think a couple days later, man, I just won on tour? Yeah, it's a nice feeling.
Starting point is 01:03:57 And, you know, there's validation. You know, it gives you some hardware to look at, you know, to validate that. You know, all the work you put in is going towards something, you know, is doing something. It's a huge hurdle. I mean, I think getting that win under your belt, the first win is a huge hurdle, just to give yourself the confidence to look back and say, may have done it before let's do it again uh those those two things have been big uh you know the trophy and the and the check that's that's not too bad either yeah i bet the check's real
Starting point is 01:04:39 nice check's real good do you just walk into the bank with like a giant check that's what i would do when i start doing that i've chose to do direct deposit a while ago but i kind of see the teller's face when i walked up with a big old check i would definitely do that i would do that every time we'd be like happy gilmore where he puts them all in his car I haven't hung on the window. How much, you know, is part of it when you first win a little bit of relief in the sense that, you know, hey, I've got somewhere, you know, the top level where I want to be playing, I'm locked in for a while now, I'm into the main events, you know, how much of it is kind of relief
Starting point is 01:05:22 and you can kind of settle in knowing, you know, this is going to be my schedule for the near future here? Yeah, so scheduling purposes is huge. There is a lot of relief there, being able to kind of pick and choose which turns you want to play in. And to play in the big ones, you know, I've always wanted to play in the Masters. And you have always wanted to win the Masters. So that's a huge opportunity. And, you know, there's just so much that comes along with it. Some big terms I've never played in.
Starting point is 01:05:55 You know, some of the WDCs are going to be pretty awesome. and it's just it's nice you know as you finally start playing some of those big tournaments that you've always always dreamed of playing in and compete in so i can't wait for for april really yeah i was going to ask you know now that you're you're into everything you've you've got a couple wins under your belt so you've you've checked that off the list what do you look in most forward to in 2018 you know there's the u.s. open at schenicock where karnusti for the british there's obviously the masters what do you what one thing stands out is like oh yeah that week is going to be fucking awesome yeah that second week in april i think it isn't it in second week in april i believe so it's uh it's a little earlier this year it might be maybe the second weekend or even kind of that first week mostly it's a little
Starting point is 01:06:53 earlier but well we'll just we'll just clarify by saying the master i think we knew what you're talking about yeah yeah that's uh shoot i've been going to i guess uh since i was a kid my home been in a while but as a kid and that that place is just like heaven you know you walk out there and there's not a piece of grass out of place and people are running around and you know it's just kind of like it's just a surreal place and to finally be a competitively and you know have a chance to win
Starting point is 01:07:33 like I saw guys do it's just a dream country the Masters has always been right to top of the list and the Ryder Cup is something that I've dreamed of as well man that's awesome I'm getting chills just thinking about the Masters right now.
Starting point is 01:07:52 Trent and I went, you know, we saw Augusta. We were at the Masters this past year for the first time, and we always tell people, you know, we walked down to Amen Corner and stood down there, you know, right behind the 12th T, and we didn't even talk to each other for like 15 minutes. We just stood there like, oh, my God, look at this place. Yeah, that's pretty cool. So this past week, let's get into it.
Starting point is 01:08:17 Obviously, Thursday, Friday, you play well, you're position yourself going into the weekend, And, you know, a pretty good, pretty good spot to make a run to contend Saturday morning in Hawaii. There's this scare, this alert that a ballistic missile is incoming from Pat and Keziers vantage point. You know, what the hell happened in your world for those 45 minutes? My phone, my phone's buzzing kind of weird. It's not an an android alert, but it's not a, not a alarm. So I was kind of weirded out already, and I look at it, and this ballistic missile threat.
Starting point is 01:09:02 This is not a drill. That's insane. That's never how you want to wake up, especially. You feel, you know, you feel a little bit of comfort over in Hawaii. It's kind of like I can explain that you just feel, it just feel like a nice, everybody's chival. and slow pace and everybody's good, and then all of a sudden there's a ballistic missile threat. So that, you know, I started kind of panicking,
Starting point is 01:09:28 but I was like, man, I don't think there's anything we can do. If it hits us, we're close. Right. So I tried to calm down, and I try to get my wife out of bed as soon as I could. Well, I said, you know, let's go downstairs, see what's going on. You know, I'm touching dust. And he's like, what are you talking about?
Starting point is 01:09:52 He says, you know, he said, I'm staying in bed. I'm so, all right. He said, if I go down, I'm going to be in bed. He said, hopefully Trump will save him. He'll have a healing room where he's right. And, you know, we go downstairs and there's people just kind of, you know, just the look on people's faces is just like concern. So, well, it's kind of a scary deal.
Starting point is 01:10:27 And to find out that it was, it was a mistake was pretty easy for everybody. Yeah, what was that? I mean, I had to feel like, oh, we got a second chance at life or something here. Like, what was that like when you guys realized it was just a false alarm? Yeah, you know, we were talking about, like, you know, we're near Pearl Harbor, you know, hopefully, you know, shoot it down. starting play out all these scenarios on our head. But yeah, whenever they said it was all over, you know, everybody was like, shoof, I kind of thought
Starting point is 01:11:03 we were all here done. You know, you don't really almost die often. And Saturday was pretty fucking scary. Man, that's just, that's absolutely insane. I can't even imagine. So you guys survive, you regroup, you play really well Saturday, you get into a playoff Sunday, six-hole playoff. You know, had you ever been through anything like that where, you know, it's kind of a weird vibe, I would assume, you know, first of all, playing the same hole over and over again. I think you played the 18th, eight times over the course of the week, four times on Sunday.
Starting point is 01:11:47 Just talk a little bit about, you know, the playoff vibe. You'd be feeling a ton of nerves, or you're feeling pretty confident knowing you're playing well? Or kind of what were you going through there? Well, I always nervous. But I've been in a situation similar to that before, so I knew what to expect. We'll go back to the Saturday morning weirdness real quick. Along, you know, with all that going on, I'm sitting there thinking out, I just kind of feel weird. my head, you know, my mind feels weird.
Starting point is 01:12:21 My body kind of feels weird. And I blast one OB on the first hole. And I'm like, oh, shit. This is, yeah, this is, this is a weird, this is officially a weird Saturday. Damn missile. I came back with eight birdies, so that was nice. That is nice. The playoffs, man, I did, I did feel some nerves, but, you know, it's one-on-one.
Starting point is 01:12:48 you know, that kind of calms you down a little bit when it's just a one-on-one. You know, you can kind of see what your competitor's doing and just kind of, you know, oh, yeah, they've beat one guy, so that's a good feeling. On the 18th, I just want to talk about the T-shot a little bit. I mean, were you kind of changing, you know, maybe the second or third time you played it? Were you changing your line off the T a little bit? Because it felt like, you know, originally you were kind of hitting one down the right side and it were laying in the fairway dribble into the right rough.
Starting point is 01:13:17 you kind of adjust it on the fly or, you know, how are you kind of approach in that 18th T shot? I played there one time two years ago and I probably don't think it's a fair way once. You stand back there and you got a bit like a really high
Starting point is 01:13:35 like 30-yard hook. So that's not really my go-to shot. So the first fly-out hole, my catty said, you know, let's do a three wood. That way you don't have to hook as much. hit the fairway. I'm like, oh,
Starting point is 01:13:50 I just don't know. And I said, yeah, you're probably right. I hadn't hit the railway yet with a driver. You know, the 30 would.
Starting point is 01:13:59 And of course, I'd hit it off the heel and it runs through the ferry into the rough. You know, all of a sudden, it's my caddy's fault. My cat is
Starting point is 01:14:08 Joe, he's huge this week. But, yeah, yeah, it's just a really hard T-shot. But now I did adjust.
Starting point is 01:14:17 And I started, I was just like, man, I'm going to sling the shit out of it. I'm just going to try to hit a huge hook, you know, as high as they can and just really hooked it and commit to it. Because I've just been leaving it out to the right and hitting it too straight. I had a couple really good ones there. You know, I guess it's maybe the fourth and fifth playoff hole. Yep. Yeah, it was, yeah, it was just, it was interesting to kind of watch it. And I think even the thing it was Billy Cratsard who was saying,
Starting point is 01:14:47 you know, I think maybe these guys should go to a three-wood, so he was kind of along the lines with the caddy, so maybe we'll have to chirp him too. Yeah. Yeah. How about that coverage? Oh, man. Did you guys have any idea?
Starting point is 01:15:01 I saw a feature highlights, and it looked a little rough. Do you guys notice that at all when you're out there, or is it just pretty much business as usual? Yeah, it was different. Normally you have a guy with a camera and a microphone, and extra battery and they're running around and, you know, running up behind you right before you hit. You know, it's kind of a, it's a, it's like a coordinated chaos type of deal. But this time there's, you know, very few cameras out there and nobody, you know, running around behind you.
Starting point is 01:15:39 One of that is you could, you could tell something a little different, but we, you know, we won't really pay attention to too much. Yeah, it was really interesting because, you know, You know, we're really curious what the crowds were like because they didn't have the microphones like they usually do on the crowds. So when you, you know, hit a nice approach shot or into the greens, you know, usually they funnel in all this noise and you can tell and there was just nothing. It was just dead silent. Yeah. Yeah, it had to be odd from the view of standpoint. Yeah, it was definitely a little weird.
Starting point is 01:16:11 So another thing I want to ask you is, shame is telling me you have a big preference for, I believe, Bermuda grass, you don't like Poa, and you build your schedule around the grass a little bit. Is this true? Yeah, I like greens that in the world. Bermuda grass is when I grew up on. I grew up on bent grass and Bermuda grass growing up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. So we got a little bit of both, which was nice. It didn't really get locked into just one style or one strain.
Starting point is 01:16:49 But yeah, Pauono, it gets a little. a little dicey so I'm not I'm not real fond of it um you know early in the morning or you know early in the morning they're better than late even uh west coast is not as good as the east coast so you know some of them are okay but i that's used not to uh not to play point good career builder challenge this week it's uh it's you know Tuesday morning as we're recording this You know, what are the next couple days look like? How much prep work are you going to do today, tomorrow, going into the week? Do you kind of feel like you're playing with a little bit of house money coming off, you know,
Starting point is 01:17:31 two wins in the last four starts? How are we feeling this week? Yeah, I'm feeling good. I told Joe, my daddy, I said, we're not going to rush into anything next week, but we're all going to try to get win number three. So that's kind of my attitude this week. I played the courses before. I'll probably, you know, the practice rounds are in carts this week, so that's nice.
Starting point is 01:18:01 I'll probably go play nine holes this afternoon and, you know, you get a quick 18 in tomorrow morning. We'll probably play the stadium course this afternoon, nine holes, and then play 18 at Lakeith Country Club and, you know, the turn to be here before I know it. I kind of like the quick turn around. It almost feels like practice rounds should always be in carts. If they're that much quicker, you guys can be a lot more efficient. I don't know why they wouldn't. Yeah, you could tee off at 7.30 and be done at 10. I like that.
Starting point is 01:18:36 All right, Pat and Keziar, man, we were impressed. We're pumped. I think you get another, you know, you keep playing like this. We'll see you on that Ryder Cup team come this fall, which would be real nice. Yeah, that's a big goal, man. And he survived a ballistic missile. He can do anything now. Survived in one.
Starting point is 01:18:54 And one. That's mental toughness. Yeah, I can't imagine, you know, I'm glad it didn't happen for many reasons. Absolutely. Well, hey, man, keep it up. We really appreciate you taking the time. We know it's early and keep playing well. We're pulling for you out there.
Starting point is 01:19:13 All right. I appreciate it, fellas. All right, folks, that wraps up. What is now week three? Week three. week three of 2018. Next time we are here, we will be talking all about Tiger Woods. It'll be Tori Pines week.
Starting point is 01:19:26 He will be back. It's exciting. It's exciting. I'm nervous. I'm a very, very nervous person. It's been a long time since he made it past this next coming month or so. Yeah, this is a big one. It's been a long time.
Starting point is 01:19:38 You know, the Bahamas open. B.S. He always makes it through that. That's never a problem. Yeah, we always build it up like it's the biggest thing in the world. Because in the moment it is, but in the grand scheme of an entire season, We are now headed towards a stretch where it's very, very important. It's very important.
Starting point is 01:19:51 He's already announced a couple events. He's going to be playing here. He's going to take a couple weeks off and play Riviera. And we all imagine he will start to dip his toes a little bit in the floor to swing. So this is where we get the test. We see can his body hold up for two, three, four tournaments over the course of a couple months? We're going to get all those answers next week. We're going to be here to talk about it.
Starting point is 01:20:10 We're going to have a big, big show with a guest or two lined up that are experts on the issue. So get excited. Tiger's almost back. We got two big tournaments this week as we laid out. We just talked to this past week's winner. A lot of good stuff going on. Big year for golf.
