Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, 4Play listeners, you can find us every Tuesday and Thursday on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube. Prime members can listen ad-free on Amazon Music. Hello. And Riggs, we're back. We are back, fall season, autumn, quarter-zip season. I'm back from Pebble Beach, which we're going to talk about. Yep. I was there about a week ago for the first time.
Starting point is 00:00:22 Kind of happened really quickly. You're going to get all of the details. People love it. People want to hear about Rigsie playing. So you're going to get a lot of that. It turns out that our. St. Andrew's episode was one of our most listened to that we've ever done.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Turns out people do like to hear about places that you can yourself just go play golf. Yep, people want to hear about it? People want to hear about it. Riggs has got more. So I've got more. It was a crazy little invite. It happened really quickly.
Starting point is 00:00:42 We're going to talk all about it. We've also got on this week's show Matt Parsiali, who is a Brockton, Massachusetts firefighter who just won the U.S. Midameter. You might have heard about him. His story kind of went viral over the weekend. Honestly, like, you know, sometimes you don't see about it, but we heard all about this one.
Starting point is 00:00:59 and he was nice enough. You had some mutual friends of Parziali, so we hot on the podcast with us. It was great. He's into the 2018 Masters, the U.S. Open at Shinnock, the U.S. Am at Pebble Beach, and he'll also be playing in the Crump Cup at Pine Valley. So he talks about it, but he's got on the Skedge next year, four out of the top five courses in America professional golf tournament, or I'm sorry, competitive golf tournaments that he's playing in.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Pretty good. And he's very, very excited about it. You'll hear it in his voice. He was a great guest. Great dude. He plays out of Thorny League golf club. Brockton Guy. Total Beauty.
Starting point is 00:01:33 Firefighter working crazy hours, but then also grinding out a side golf gig. It's pretty great. It's awesome. He is the man. A bunch of his good buddies and himself are obviously Stoey's four-play fans. So we kind of followed the whole thing. Won the final eight and six. You're going to get all the details from Matt himself a little bit later in the show.
Starting point is 00:01:53 We're also coming off of Mr. Gary Player on last week's show. We interviewed him so long. that you kind of, I kind of forgot, I didn't forget because it was Gary Player, but it's been so long now, it feels good to maybe talk about it a little bit, just a little, a little recap. I can't believe we had Gary Player on this fucking podcast, this stupid golf podcast. It's so, it's so strange how things like that happen. It's like you blogged him dancing at a benefit, just, you know, it was a funny video. And then next thing you know, you reach out to him, he follows you, you, DM him like, hey,
Starting point is 00:02:23 you want to come on our little weird golf podcast? He says, sure, and then we talked to him for almost an hour. We are not a little podcast. I like to be modest around here. Modest, humble. Humble. Hustangle. We had a very funny moment at the beginning of the interview where, so we're obviously a rag tag operation around here.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Shit goes wrong all the time, way more often than I would like, as I like to be a little bit of a control freak. But we had this scary player's interview all lined up. He calls in. We do a quick little pre-chat. You know, hi, Mr. Player. He called me Sam, which is actually my first name. Very cool. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:02:59 And then Trent. You called you Riggs on Twitter, Sam on the podcast. Yes. Interesting. Which is funny. So we start chatting and we're like, you know, we're going to do this quick intro. He's like, great, no problem. You know, Mr. Professional, Mr. Gary Player.
Starting point is 00:03:11 So we start and we get, I don't know, 30 seconds into it. And our tech guys start freaking out. But it's really weird because when you're live on an interview, you can't really talk with other people because everyone can't just fucking hear you because there's a mic. So you don't want it to come through. And you can't really hear the tech guys because, we have headphones on and we're listening to Gary Player talk to us. We're trying to start to interview him. And you can just see the tech guys.
Starting point is 00:03:34 They kind of start fidgeting. People start doing handwaves and movements. And we're like, what is going on here? They come in. They try to communicate with you. They're giving me like the throat sign. Like cut slash slash. Slash.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Throat slash. Like what the fuck does that mean? We're talking to Gary Player. Turns out his mic wasn't being picked up by the recording. So if they had let us keep going, the interview you would have heard is Riggs and I asking questions and no one answering anything. Very long pauses, especially with Gary Player because he's a talker. And then it would be like, you hear me and me and Rick go, oh, oh, interesting.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Yeah, and then like respond. You would have been like, it just wouldn't have been a thing. So we end up having to restart, which I think this might be one of the greatest coincidences in the history of the world. But he also on his end, I think he thought he fucked up. Yeah, because if you listen to the false start, he starts saying, let's start over, let's start over, before we say. Right when we were like, we need to start over. Right. So everybody started over.
Starting point is 00:04:30 We did a false start, restart, and the most professional thing I've ever heard is, you know, we did a re-introdu to him. And then he delivered the exact same professional response. Just he cleaned up the one thing that he wasn't happy with his own first start. Yeah. And you and I talked a little bit afterwards where, because in the moment we are freaking out. We're like, Gary Player is going to hang up on us. Riggs is going to ring the neck of the tech guy. I'm like to freak out.
Starting point is 00:04:56 I'm like slapping people in the podcast. But then we were talking afterwards where Gary Player, he's 82 years old. He's been a professional golfer. He's one of the most accomplished golfers of all time. He's done a million interviews where things have probably gone wrong. Right. And he is such a pro that he just starts right over again. It was the least problematic thing ever.
Starting point is 00:05:12 Yeah, we're just going to start right over. We started right over, jumped right into it. He was unbelievable. That man is, he's hysterical. He's very inspiring. He's very smart. He's very well-spoken. He's just, he's Gary fucking player.
Starting point is 00:05:25 We've had a lot of feedback from him. And it's all been positive. And it is, he is an inspiring person. He is changing people's lives. He's like, get out there. You know, what is it? Eat breakfast like a king. Eat lunch like a prince.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Don't, he said, eat small dinners. Don't eat dinner. He said, eat dinner like a poor person. That's right. He's saying, take the stairs, walk everywhere, which I'm a full-time stair guy now. It's been. Big-time stair guy. We're on the third floor here in New York.
Starting point is 00:05:49 And it stinks every morning when I get here because I'm like, I got to take the stairs. But, you know, these small, small steps and you get there. So Gary Player, changing people. lives. You should see the disapproving look I give of the people waiting for the elevator. The way our stairs are going on us, you've got to like squeeze by the elevator entrance to get into the stairwell. And so
Starting point is 00:06:07 you just like, mozy past him like, oh, okay, you con-like, you just look at him in a condescending way. Like, okay, you lazy losers, then I take the stairs. Lazy Lazy pigs. Like Gary Plier would not like you guys at all. You would not. And I tweeted a Gary today. I was like, I took the stairs today and he was like, good job mate. I'm proud of you. He's like
Starting point is 00:06:23 a father figure of this podcast. I love me. He's like a foreplay guy's buddy now. Mr. Gary great player. So that was awesome. If you haven't listened to it, go back and listen. Or have you got any buddies that haven't. Make sure you tell him about it. It's a must listen.
Starting point is 00:06:34 It's a must listen. I also want to say I got chirped by Portnoy last week because I think it was the Michigan club golf team. Send him a polo. I think he got it when he was out there for the, they did the tailgate show, and they gave a bunch of shit. Look, we're all in on reppping your club golf team, your college golf team, any golf team you're on.
Starting point is 00:06:56 send us fucking polos. Amaside large. What, an X-L? Yep, XL. Send us polos. We cannot have Portnoy's strutting around the office, stunting, like, oh, the golf community likes me more than you guys, and they send me shit, and they give me shit. Fuck that.
Starting point is 00:07:10 We want golf gear from your teams. You want to rep your teams. Send us stuff. And Dave acting like this is such a huge deal. He went to Michigan. Of course they're going to give him stuff. He's not special. We want to be special.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Still just grind my gear. I know. I can tell. That's why he did it. That's exactly why I did it. also we're going to talk about quarter zips we are keep your eyes peeled in the store I'm going to be rocking a quarter zip barstool quarter zip that it's been a long process let's just say that it has been a long process very long process very frustrating process I get a lot
Starting point is 00:07:40 of tweets I get a lot of emails I get a lot of DMs on the Instagram situation hey rigs you're always talking about quarter zip season but you guys don't sell fucking quarter zip I agree I've been on people I've been feisty rigs at people that are in charge of this very feisty they're out there. I have one now in my hands. I will be wearing it and you will be able to purchase it very soon. We also be looking really good and you know what else can help you look good? What's that? Our friends at Dollar Shave Club. Oh, you know what? That's very true. And I am very smooth right now. You're clean shaving right now. I'm smooth rigs. Thanks to our friends at the Dollar Shave Club. Yep. And I am also, I'm not a smooth trend, but I am cleaned up because I had a
Starting point is 00:08:18 wedding this weekend. So I had to, and I get like a neck beard going. Yeah. So I had to clean that up before I got there. I've got a little bit of a weird, some sort of facial hair that I can grow, but my neck is all good because of our friends, a Dollar Shave Club. By now, everyone knows the Dollar Shave Club ships amazing razors for a few bucks. I've been a member for a while now, and I love my shave, like I told you. Same. But what you might not know, because I didn't either, is that Dollar Shave Club also has products for pretty much everything else you need in the bathroom. We're talking body wash. We're talking shampoo. We're talking hair gel, lip balm, everything. As soon as I heard Dollar Shave Club had other things other than razors, I was sold. At the store,
Starting point is 00:08:52 There are way too many options and you can't tell the difference between any of them. Then if you have any questions, the clerk, who is an idiot usually doesn't know what the difference is. And you can't really help you since they're not experts on the products. Dollar Shave Club makes it easy and convenient for you to upgrade your shave and your entire bathroom. Now you don't have to step in a store to get high quality shave and grooming products. Dollar Shave Club will deliver them right to your door. Just like the razors, everything is super high quality. It has left me looking and feeling amazing.
Starting point is 00:09:18 As if you've ever seen pictures of me, I always look amazing. from premium ingredients to sophisticated sense Dollar Shave Club is changing the game if you're like me and are sick of the nonsense of the store now it's time to try out Dollar Shave Club for a limited time. Dollar Shave Club is basically giving away their shit shower and shave. It actually
Starting point is 00:09:35 says shit. In the copy? It does. I was going to, I was like, Trent got really aggressive with his spontaneous additions to the adrift. It has the asterisk, but I went just shit full on because they put it in there. Gotcha. Oh, it was S-H-Asterisk? It's, yeah,
Starting point is 00:09:51 S-H-a-T, shit, shower, shave starter set to new members for only $5. This starter set features their executive razor and three trial-sized versions of their most popular products that help you stay fresh and clean. In your first box, you'll receive the shave butter, body wash, one-wipe Charlie's butt wipes. Wow. How about that? That's really nice. Clean yourself right up. Clean yourself right up.
Starting point is 00:10:12 I have another question for you. Would you say now that Dollar Shave Club is edgy? They're edgy. Ooh. You see what I did there? I did it because razor. They have like a sharp edge. Look at that.
Starting point is 00:10:23 And they're edgy with the shit asterisk. Good stuff. That's why we have a podcast. Yep. You also receive their executive razor, which includes their premium weighty handle and full cassette of cartridges. After the first box, replacement cartridges are sent for only a few bucks a month. Starting point is 00:10:42 Dot com slash four. Dollar Shave Club's high-quality products will have you covered from face cheeks to butt cheeks. There's no better time to. You guys should see Trent giggling as he reads. I really like. Well, you made the joke about Dollar Shave Club being edgy, and this is nothing like the things they usually have. Is this somebody, they hire a new copy editor?
Starting point is 00:11:05 I like it. From face cheeks to butt cheeks, there is no better time to try the club. Go to Dollar Shave Club. Again, use the promo code for F-O-R-E. Go get pretty much everything under the sun because they sell it. I love it. Dollar Shave Club are guys.
Starting point is 00:11:19 From face cheeks to butt cheeks Face cheeks to butt cheeks That kind of could be like the foreplay motto Face cheeks to butt cheeks I really like that So we also want to talk about Potential upcoming guests If anybody has any recommendations
Starting point is 00:11:33 Any connections Anything like that please reach out to us A little known story that we actually got Our good friend Kevin Kisner Who rose to be on Instagram recently And we're going to talk about Boom roasted We recently got and became buddies with Kevin Kisner
Starting point is 00:11:47 because a couple of his friends relentlessly reached out to us. We're like, Kiz is the man. I know he seems like a boring loser on the course and comes off like a boring loser all the time. Loser, loser, loser. Nope. Turns out Kiz was a beauty, a great dude. And that's because his friends constantly told us to have him on the show. So if you've got any recommendations, shoot them our way, put us in touch, connect us.
Starting point is 00:12:10 We have, we're really looking to get into, we're going to have a couple of course architects on. We want to have a couple course superintendents on. have one from each of those categories on the very near horizon. Yep. And I think that'll be, it'll be interesting really to talk to a superintendent about getting a course ready for a major championship, which is what we're, a little hint there, which is what we've got on the horizon, things like that. So basically anything around the world of golf that you would like us to kind of delve into
Starting point is 00:12:40 with a guest, let us know. So this podcast, our guests have been predominantly PJ tour players, but we've also had analysts. We've had guys like David Farity, Brandel Chambly. We're kind of, I'm open to doing just about anything in terms of interviewing on this podcast because we can, now that there's not as much golf going on, we can go deep with some guests. We went real deep with Gary Player. It took it for almost an hour. It took him for almost an hour. So yeah, course architect, superintendents, anybody interesting in the world of golf, we want to talk to them. We want to get connected with them. We want to have them on this podcast and pick their brain. I think it can be
Starting point is 00:13:10 a very, very interesting thing if we have a whole array of different types of guests on this podcast. Shoot us an email for Play at barstoolsports.com. So last week, a week ago, I was out in the Monterey Peninsula. I was in California, bra. Bras, dude. First time in California. I've never been in California.
Starting point is 00:13:29 I've never been to California. And I got, so it's kind of a crazy story. I got the greatest email anyone's ever gotten, probably. About maybe two weeks before I went to Pebble Beach. I got an email from a buddy of mine. guy met at a member guest my buddy Josh shout to my guy Josh who also
Starting point is 00:13:50 is a Harvard guy we got a bunch of mutual friends but again we kind of met at this member guest became buddies and played some golf together got an email from him about three weeks ago that was like hey man I've got this that I won this trip to Pebble Beach to play Spyglass Spanish Bay and Pebble Beach
Starting point is 00:14:06 our fourth just dropped out would love to have you if there's any way you can make it I'm a dumbass and missed the original email. Oh, you didn't tell me that. Missed the original email, this heroic figure that he is, set a follow-up a week later. You are so lucky. You didn't tell me. He should have definitely. Isn't that insane? He 100%. I'm a little mad at Josh. And I never miss emails. You don't. You are. I'm like Mr. On It guy. Riggs is very prompt out emails. He sends very official emails. He always responds. He's very, very good at it.
Starting point is 00:14:36 The fact that you missed an email and the fact that Josh reached back out to you, I wish he hadn't done that. I wish he would have been like, this dude's blowing me off. Insane. That is insane. I don't know if I read it when I was drunk or something, I accidentally clicked on it. I don't know what happened. Okay, so it was red. You had clicked it like it was... I'm pretty sure. Well, it's tough because when the new one comes in, it becomes a thread with one of them unread, so I don't know if I...
Starting point is 00:14:56 I don't really recall knowing if one of them was unred or not. Okay. But he sends a follow-up, and I read it, and I just start hitting my keyboard. Yes, as fast as he can. Send, send. How much time was there elapsed between the first email and the second? A week. One week, exactly.
Starting point is 00:15:13 And his follow-up says, he says, he says, as fast as he said. like, hey man, just touching base back again. I think I got it probably here by tomorrow. Let me know. And I was like, yes, yes, yes, yes. I can not believe that. Pure insanity. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:15:24 I never miss email. So that would have been just a life-changing fuck-up for me. This story would have been better if it had ended like, I found this email two weeks ago. Strong disagree. Strong disagree. So I said yes. Got flights about a week and a half later. My ass is on my way to California.
Starting point is 00:15:43 We played Spanish Bay on Friday. We played it again on Saturday, and then we would go on to play spyglass and pebble over the next couple days. We stayed at the inn at Spanish Bay. Now, what a year for your boy, Riggs. I'm going to write a blog about the, I have a theory that no one in the history of the world has made less money than I make and played the course list that I played this year. It has to be true. Like, not even close, really. It has to be true.
Starting point is 00:16:11 That's what you get. You start a golf podcast. It's you start a fun golf podcast You just be nice to people Yeah You'd be fun And you just say yes to shit And that's all it takes
Starting point is 00:16:19 And make sure you check your emails And check your emails, And check your emails folks That would have been catastrophic So we get there Friday I mean Another classic A little rigsy luck
Starting point is 00:16:31 I bring the weather They're talking in pebble It's been this misty foggy rainy winter Or I'm sorry summer They get the marine layer They call it out there I'm an expert now
Starting point is 00:16:41 because I've been out there. Basically, they've had all these spectacular views. You're on the Pacific. There's clips and all that. But people have been talking like all summer you can't see shit because it's so foggy. It's so rainy. Blah, blah, blah. I get there.
Starting point is 00:16:54 71 degrees. Not a cloud in the sky. Not a breath of wind for four straight days. Perfect. Four straight days. I mean, the caddies were like, we've been catty out of like 10 years. Never seen anything like this. It's unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:17:04 Perfect weather. Perfect. I couldn't even bring that many quarterships. It's too warm. Oh, wow. Pity party for rigs here, guys. Same deal I have. Everybody get your tissues and tiny violins for rigs.
Starting point is 00:17:15 You got Josh, he's a big, big time pebble guy, lives in Phoenix and just loves going to pebble. It's his favorite place on planet Earth. He's got this deal. Whenever he goes, he gets the same caddies, the caddy each round. And then the last night there, he has the caddies bring their girlfriends, and they do a big dinner together. Okay. So it's a whole scene, awesome, awesome scene. A lot of camaraderie, a lot of competitive golf.
Starting point is 00:17:40 We throw balls on the first tee at Spanish Bay To determine teams for the week My dear Josh and I got her asses. Oh, yeah? Oh, man. So we were both the two low handicaps And the other guys were like around One was playing as like a 13
Starting point is 00:17:54 Which is a complete dogship I got Anthony who's a great guy But he's definitely not 13 handicapped Shots fired at Anthony Motherfucker And so he shot like a 79 That's like a 13 at I think like SpyGlass Okay Anthony
Starting point is 00:18:07 Yeah, okay Anthony Okay buddy So we did a 54 whole match was what we were doing. Going into Sunday, we were, I think we were 11 down. Yikes. Going into Sunday. Yikes. And we weren't even playing that badly.
Starting point is 00:18:21 Yeah. But first round we played was Friday, Spanish Bay, played a little twilight round. Spanish Bay. So there's always this kind of conundrum when I go play like an awesome new course where when you, before you go play it, do you want to do a ton of research because you get really excited about it? you a ton of research, but then you kind of like wipe out that seeing it for the first time. Certainly. Feeling where you kind of walk up, you go, I've seen these holes.
Starting point is 00:18:47 I know what this hole is as opposed to me. You walk up, you're like, holy fuck, this is unbelievable. So Spanish Bay was the one I knew the least about. Spanish Bay is awesome. And it's tough. But it is the ocean views. It's right on 17-mile drive where there's like at the end of every hole, basically, there's like a line of cars on because the area is so awesome that people park all
Starting point is 00:19:09 long 17-mile drive. Sure. So you've got those views the entire round. I don't know if I mentioned, but the weather was perfect. You once or twice. Spanish Bay was very tricky in that it's tough enough Tita Green. You can lose some golf balls, which you really can't at much at Spyglass or Pebble, unless you hit it into either the Pacific or there's a couple holes of water at Spyglass.
Starting point is 00:19:31 But Spanish, there's a lot of trouble out there. Then you get on the greens and they're kind of like Circus Greens a little bit. So Spanish Bay was sneaky tough. but an incredible track and again the one that I knew the least about so I was really pumped to play it spyglass and pebble I had probably played pebble no joke probably 300 times in the video game I was going to say that I've played I have played pebble more than probably any other course on that game you just play it and play it and play it so I know every hole in that course exactly and so so what we did was we played in the morning Saturday at Spanish Bay as well and then we talked about playing 36
Starting point is 00:20:09 but we decided not to. We went over. We got lunch at Pebble Beach. Saw it for the first time. It's like a 10-minute drive or whatever from where we were staying in Spanish Bay. Drove over. Saw it the first time. Had lunch right there.
Starting point is 00:20:20 Went to the shops. Bought some stuff. Bought a quarter zip for my nephew. Oh, look at you. First birthday is this Friday, I believe. Oh, oh. Happy birthday, little guy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Little Rob. And so I'm going home for the first time. I haven't seen my parents since Christmas. So that's kind of tough. So I'm going home. Oh, wow. That is a long time. Yeah, going home.
Starting point is 00:20:39 And if anyone's around St. Louis, and ones take me out to a sweet club, by the way, I'm going to be home. Oh, boy, here we go. But anyways, got some, did some shopping, got a bunch of cool stuff, hung out of pebble salt for the first time, was like, holy shit, did that whole deal, had a big dinner, played Spyglass Sunday morning. Spyglass is really interesting. It's unlike any other course they ever played in that the first five holes are all in the water. Spectacular views.
Starting point is 00:21:04 It's got the fourth hole, fifth hole, fourth hole, one, two. three, fourth hole is kind of the famous short part four with the wasteland on the left and then the skinniest, longest green in the world that kind of angles away from you. So playing some of those holes, again, on the water, the views are unbelievable. And then the rest of the course, the last, you know, 13, 14 holes are all inland. And in these tall pines that look like Augusta. So it's this crazy mix of kind of, you know, coastal lynxie type golf. and then you're just in the woods the rest of the time
Starting point is 00:21:39 and it's kind of this peaceful quietness. Spyglass is tough, very, very difficult. I also had to miss, I missed a hole and a half because I had to blog the Mike Pence walking out of the game situation. Hero, you're a hero. Kind of a heroic. Wait, what did you have to block? That was when Mike Pence walked, left the game with their little stunt that they did.
Starting point is 00:21:57 Oh, that's right. Yep, I do remember that. So I'm walking down, pull my phone out. I'm like, Jesus Christ, to see you guys in a couple holes. Blog don't sleep, folks. Blog don't sleep. But Spyglass, Spyglass is spectacular. and like I said, it's unbelievable unique in that Spanish Bay, everything's on the water,
Starting point is 00:22:11 and then you get to spyglass, and after the first maybe hour and a half, hour of the round, you're just in the trees the rest of time. You might as well be in Georgia or something like that. Oh, yeah, that's awesome. So it's kind of a crazy vibe, but it's unbelievably spectacular. Our caddies, that's actually their favorite course out there. A lot of people, it's their favorite course, just because you get a little bit of both worlds, the design aspect.
Starting point is 00:22:31 A lot of people call it, I think, the greatest course to never have hosted like a main or major tournament. But spy glass is spectacular. You have a note here that says deer everywhere. There are a ton of deer. You're right. I put that note in. I forgot about that. I put that on Instagram. The fucking deer out there are fearless. There was a picture. I don't know if there's a picture of video where you're about to tee off and you're just chilling. They're like, let's hurry it up here, Rigsie Pound.
Starting point is 00:22:55 They're fucking everywhere. They were. They were like looking at me like, they were looking at me like I was a pedestrian and get ready to cross the street and they were a car being like, let's go, get across the crosswalk here. I mean, the way you describe it, you're in their home so you're just like they're probably like let's true let's go so it's like where they live they get it they're very used to humans walking around because it gets a lot of play that's the thing they have to be very used to them because you were very close to a deer
Starting point is 00:23:16 in that picture and like they weren't just these little like pussy ass dough they were like huge huge bucks like 10 point bucks running around that would just bury you I was like what is going on here I'm trying to tee off I saw two big fat naked bikers in the woods off 17 having sex how I'm supposed to chip
Starting point is 00:23:32 with that going on Doug so a ton of deer and smite glass and I'm glad Trent reminded me of that. Then we decided this was not planned, but Pebble, since Spyglass, Spanish, and Pebble Beach are all owned by the Pebble Beach Golf Resorts, you can do a replay rate of any of the courses. So we actually played Spyglass in the morning and then looked into it, and we were able to book a 250 twilight replay rate for half the rate that Pebble Beach costs and play Pebble Beach in the afternoon, even though we had a T-Glass. tea time in the morning the next day so we were like fuck it let's just do it so it was really interesting because and it's like it's a not it's a you're not guaranteed to finish tea time sure because it's whatever late in the day that's why they charge a half and all that so we teed off at
Starting point is 00:24:19 250 just two of us half our crew was like i'm just going to save it for tomorrow two of us went back out me and josh and we played a twilight round at pebble beach which was one of the coolest and kind of insane things that i've ever done yeah and it was really a cool way to to play the course for the first time because obviously you're nervous you know you're jittery or like holy shit pebble beach you know all the holes and the holes are way more distinct than they are at the old course with the exception of you know maybe three or four holes at the old course um so playing each one of them is kind of kind of that same vibe almost that i got on kind of the first t a little bit at the old course or the 17th or 18th of the old course yeah where you know like
Starting point is 00:24:59 every nook and cranny of the hole and you remember all of it because you've you've seen it so many times whether watching or whether playing it on a video game or whatever. But Pebble Beach was, in my opinion, I think it's legitimately two or three times better than any other course I've played. Yeah? It is spectacular. I mean, it's, and yes, the views skew it. The views are basically the reason.
Starting point is 00:25:22 I mean, it's just. But even how much I knew about the course, how many times I had seen it, my expectations were unbelievably high, and I actually expected to be disappointed. that course is unbelievable. You actually cannot believe it when you're playing it. How the fuck is this a golf course? The height and the severity of the cliffs on six and on eight,
Starting point is 00:25:49 after you hit your approach on eight, I posted on my Instagram as well, kind of when you approach the cliff on eight, is it's like an acute angle on eight. You fell off. You're a dead person. You wouldn't touch anything until just the ground. and you would just be like so it is insane and you're just playing golf on top of it you're like walking around like what the and it's like what the and it's like that for you know so it's you play one two three really not in the water kind of the approach you can see the water a little bit on three everybody kind of knows the first hole is that dinky little dog lake right which is actually a tougher hole than I thought it was you know there's it's it's but it is a it's in an incredibly unspectacular first hole for like for so
Starting point is 00:26:32 an iconic course it's maybe the worst first hole in the world uh second hole's fine you know it's part five uh you just kind of blast one it's a decent enough par five it's kind of got a field goal of trees maybe a hundred yards out or so in that huge cross bunker so it's got some cool characteristics third hole is that severe dog leg left yep where in the video game you try to hit like a massive hook you try to like kind of drive it on the green uh perfect for me because i play a hook so i ripped a three wood out there had like 80 yards in no big deal um and then you play you hit your first T shot on the fourth hole and you walk out, you get into the fairway on the fourth, you look to your right,
Starting point is 00:27:06 and you're just like, holy shit. You're like, you can see sailboats, you can see back across. There's a handful of views, too, that you realize when you play the course that you don't see, you know, just from the camera angles and from the video game, how kind of all the pieces come together. That was, in my opinion, one of the coolest things about seeing Augusta for the first time. That's what I was going to say.
Starting point is 00:27:28 Very similar. Is all of those views that you don't get, where you realize, how the course fits together. It has kind of a rhythm to it and how you can kind of see what's coming up and all that. And at Pebble, it was insane how from the fourth fairway you could see all the way over
Starting point is 00:27:44 to the 17th green. You could see that peninsula, that 6, 7, and 8 sit on just like right in front of you as you're hitting your approach. You get up to the green and it's even higher than the fairway view and then you can see the fifth hole, which is that par 5 Nicholas designed hole, which might be the most underrated par 3.
Starting point is 00:28:02 in the world, I think. A bit a little backstory. I didn't know the full backstory. I knew a little bit about it. The fifth hole that part three is relatively new, I think, like the late 90s. Because where the green sits now used to be a property and a house and they had to wait for the people to die. No.
Starting point is 00:28:19 And then they moved the green from behind the house, which didn't have great views, to where the house is and made it this spectacular part three right on the cliff that Jack Nicholas designed. And it's fucking awesome. Thanks. Thanks, dead people. So shout out to those people for dying, giving up that property. It's great because it is just an awesome, awesome hole.
Starting point is 00:28:38 I think that's just such an incredible part three helps that I played it really well both days. But it's long. So we played the furthest back tease that we could. They have the U.S. Open T's or maybe half the holes are further back than we played it. But those are basically roped off and you can't play from back there. So we played the blues, which again are the tips for anybody visiting and playing. Right around 7,000, maybe 6,900 yards. Nice.
Starting point is 00:29:02 And it's very, I mean, when the rough's down, yeah, very nice. When the rough's down and the fairways are a little wider, it really plays pretty fucking wide open and pretty relatively easy, especially when there's no wind. So I was able, I played well, which always adds to it. And then, I mean, all the stuff I just described, you're not even to the sixth hole yet, which is where things get just so unbelievably iconic. The sixth hole that, like, uphill par five that's legitimately up a goddamn cliff. it's a little bit easier of a T-shot Again, well, a lot easier of a T-shot When they're not hosting U.S. Open
Starting point is 00:29:35 Because they cut all of the fescue down on the left That's up on top of those bunkers So the play actually is just blast it left Which I never did because I want to try to rip one down the fairway Yep Hooked one to the bunkers No, and then I think I Oh, I hit a lip of a bunker, which is also on my Instagram
Starting point is 00:29:51 And then I hit a three iron up just short of the green Got up and down for par Then you play the seventh, which is maybe the most iconic And famous par three in the world I think it's like a hundred and six yards or something. We played it. No win. Just a little 56 degree wedge.
Starting point is 00:30:04 The first time I played it, Gap Wedge the second time. Unbelievable whole eighth year aim over the little rock. Hit one up there. And then you have the coolest approach maybe in all of golf, which in my opinion, it gets even cooler when you walk around because the cliff is so unbelievably severe that you can't even really tell it's a cliff until you're past it. I mean, you're just up there. You can just see, you know, you hit over this little inlet. that's a cliff
Starting point is 00:30:30 and all you can kind of see in the distance is the green you're hitting to it and you know it's a cliff but in your brain you don't really see it and then when you walk around you got to walk all the way around the inlet then you kind of look back and you're like holy fuck it's a cliff like I just hit a shot from up there and then at this point I mean you've still got nine which is one of the hardest part fours
Starting point is 00:30:51 and one of the most awesome par fours I've ever played I hit a good drive my thought was a good drive on nine and there's a T-box that was another 40 yards behind us, and I had 2.35 in on the Pire 4. With the Pacific Ocean on your right, tiny little green, sloped away. It's like, what the fuck is going on here? I would have hooked a three-air into the rough, chunk of wedge made double.
Starting point is 00:31:14 Nice. Then the 10th is awesome. 10th is such a good par 4. Again, with the cliff on your right, fairway all sloping left to right towards the cliff. The bunkers, very well placed on the left, kind of angle you a little bit. with the green that sits back in. There's like this mansion right behind the green.
Starting point is 00:31:32 It's somebody famous's house. That's what I was going to ask. It's somebody famous's house who got recently, relatively recently. It was divorced and lost it in the divorce. Ooh, whatever that would be. Real tough. That is tough. That's a tough one to lose.
Starting point is 00:31:47 It's like Hugh Jackman or somebody like that. It's like somebody insane. You keep talking. I'm going to look it up. And then you get to, I mean, at this point, you get to 11. And a lot of people don't realize, too, is that even 11. you know 12 t 13 and 14 even though like they don't get the love for the views you're just one fair way over basically and you're more high like slightly more elevated than you are when you're playing you know nine and 10 and all
Starting point is 00:32:13 that so you still have basically the same view you're just not you're just like a hundred yards away from the cliff instead of right on the cliff so you've still got the views 15 and 16 even though they're not on the water are still good holes especially 16 I really like the 6th team and then you play 1718 which you're incredibly iconic jean hackman jean hackman that's right who did i say huge jackman you're close i was pretty fucking close that's actually that's way close somebody studied the human brain there's something there i was really unbelievably close jean hackman okay still alive jesus um and then we had also the warriors owner and like the rockets or somebody like that they have these giant like mansions right
Starting point is 00:32:53 above the 14th fairway and the Warriors owner was just out there hanging out and having a cocktail. That would be Joe La Cobb. He was out there having a cocktail. No way. As we were playing 14 during the Twilight round. So the first time I played Pabble, we played 17 and 18 in the dark. And what happened was they were like, they're like, yeah, you know, you guys are not,
Starting point is 00:33:12 you have the not guaranteed to finish time. You'll probably get to 15 or so. And then the lady, there was a lady starter. And the lady starter said, just so you know. no one's going to pull you off the course. So you can take it as like deep into the night out there as you're willing to do. Interesting. So we were like, interesting.
Starting point is 00:33:32 So we get to the 15th T. When we realized on the 15th T that the guys in front of us had bailed. Oh. And it was getting dark, but it wasn't dark yet. And they were like, let's fucking go. That's when he just, yeah, head pedal to the metal. We played 15 and 16 speed golf and then got to the 17th T and it was legitimately dark at this point. But we're standing on the 17th T at fucking penalty.
Starting point is 00:33:53 double beach right like holy shit the guys and there's twosom on the tea are these guys from i think seattle they're like wash an area and they're like you guys want to join us real quick heroic move we're like yes absolutely so we played 17 and 18 in the dark hustling with these two guys that we met really nice guys um and then on the 18th green they have like a spotlight on that tree that sits just short right of the green that kind of points towards the uh the green so it's actually a little spotlight on 18 as you're finishing so it was a really really cool really interesting way to play Pebble for the first time and kind of got some of those nerves out for the second time that I played it. Yeah, I like that.
Starting point is 00:34:28 Low stakes. Yes, big time. And it was really cool because, you know, we're, pebble's kind of famous for having like five and a half hour rounds or something just because everyone's taking pictures and all that, which is totally fine. Because when you're out there, you're like, I'm not in a hurry to fucking get out of here at all. And so we actually, as we were waiting because we were just playing as a twosom on like the sixth, seventh and eighth greens, which are, you know, some of the most iconic locations in golf. We just stood in the green for like 10 or 15 minutes after we finish and just put it around. That's unbelievable. There's nobody behind us.
Starting point is 00:34:55 That's ridiculous. We were like, what is going on here? Like, what world is this? And then got up Monday, I got up at about 4.30 and wrote blogs for three hours and then played Pebble Beach. Hero. So it was a really cool Monday and then traveled home, played really well, shot 78 from the back tees. A couple sloppy doubles. I actually thought I was going to take it way lower.
Starting point is 00:35:16 But again, it's the easiest condition you could have possibly played it in. Sure. So it was awesome. Pebble is, again, no joke, in my opinion, two times better than any other course I've ever played. It is just spectacular. And that's even, I still think that even when it has probably like three or four holes that most people consider shitty holes. Yeah. And it's still that fucking good.
Starting point is 00:35:38 It's just like surreal when you're out there playing. And I do have to comment as well that I forgot to mention this, that Kisner did roast me on my Instagram. That's right. I'm out at Spanish Bay having a lovely day. Hit one pretty tight in a part three, maybe the most picture asked part three at Spanish Bay. Put up the Instagram video of the shot and Kiz comments right away.
Starting point is 00:35:59 It says, I like the down the line view. This was not a down the line view. I like the down the line view so I can see that nasty shut club face at the top and then like the wide-eyed face. Yeah, emoji, yeah. Like shocked and like, ew. Boom roasted.
Starting point is 00:36:12 Kisner. He got like more, he got like more likes on that than my fucking Instagram. Of course he did. There's dog shit. He doesn't even have any followers on Instagram. Oh, does he do that? He's got like 800 followers on Instagram.
Starting point is 00:36:21 How bored are you, Kisner, that you're sitting around roasting podcaster swings? Get a life, Kiz. I know it's the offseason. Get a life. He's out there chirping me, roasting my swing. I'm out, trying to have a good time, you know, struggle, and it's not even quarters of weather. Fuck off. You're still mad.
Starting point is 00:36:39 Anyways, moving on, I highly recommend you go to Pebble Beach, folks. There you go. There you go. That's where we're at. Breaking news. Really would just like to say, I know. I didn't think this, but you should go play Pebble Beach. It is fucking awesome.
Starting point is 00:36:53 It would have been something if you would just come on here and shit all over Pebble Beach. Like, this place. What a dump. Basically a dump next to an ocean. I can't even fathom how there's a better place on Earth than Pebble Beach. Maybe I'll find one. If I do, I'll tell everyone about it on the podcast. There you go.
Starting point is 00:37:08 Check your email out there, folks. You might have an email inviting you to Pebble. You might have the greatest email of all time. You don't know. Moving on, we got headlines, Trent Daddy. Let's do it. We got a lot of stuff to talk about. about Tiger Woods. We're going to start with Tiger.
Starting point is 00:37:22 You know what? We're going to start with Tiger, and I got some breaking news. Come on. I got some breaking news. Come on. That story is about 10 minutes old. Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent said Monday that the 14-time major champion met with doctor who performed the fusion surgery, which he had back in April for a check-up late last week, and he has been clear to resume full golf activities with no restrictions. Boners. Huge. Huge. Huge boners.
Starting point is 00:37:44 As big as my boner can get, which isn't huge, but it's something. We are right on track with the true. Traditional tiger gets geared up for the season. Yep. Late, you know, kind of fall, late part of the year, recovers from his previous spring surgery that he always has, whatever it is, back. Usually back.
Starting point is 00:38:00 Knee, you know, neck, vertebrae. Anything. Whatever the fuck it is. Start swinging, gets us all juiced up, starts to ease into it with a couple small tournaments. He might be a little bit behind that window. He's probably going to miss his own tournament. Right, which usually plays in the Bahamas.
Starting point is 00:38:14 Then he starts to gear up beginning of the year. Right to come master's time, he's going to get hurt again, So we got a small window to sell t-shirts, basically. That's what we look at it now. Unfortunately, that's where we're at with it. Let's see, I got a Steinberg quote here. If we'll just go a little bit deeper into this.
Starting point is 00:38:27 Hit me with Steinberg. He says he got a nice report and is allowed to proceed. He can do as much as he needs to do. Tiger is going to take this very, very slowly. This is good, but he plans to do it the right way. Again, that's meaningless. It means nothing. We hear that every year.
Starting point is 00:38:42 Steinberg is, again, he's going to take these bullets. He's going to get out there. He's going to wave the flag for his buddy. It's great. It's great news. I guess. We're going to try and sell shirts. I got to say,
Starting point is 00:38:51 Tiger's really been doing a, the one thing that's different is his teaser strategy. Yeah. He's been dropping these little videos. I mean, he dropped, he's wearing fucking Sunday red in his black pants on Sunday
Starting point is 00:39:02 and posting a swing of his driver. And if they asked, if somebody asked him like, why are you doing these videos? It causes a real shitstorm on the weekends because he did it Saturday, the middle of a college football day. And then he did it yesterday,
Starting point is 00:39:12 Sunday red in the middle of an NFL Sunday. He would be like, oh, no, I just want people to be able to get a look into what I'm doing. He just wants to cause a shitstorm and, like, give people to look at him and be like, hey, I might actually come back and do this. It's a very interesting look into his brain and to his mind. Do you think because maybe the DUI thing that he's, like, trying to, like, build up more?
Starting point is 00:39:28 Like, do you think he's got kind of a big chip on his shoulder? I said this in the blog that I wrote, the quick blog that I wrote about it, where it's, you know how when you tweet something stupid or you tweet something with a typo? So you start tweeting a lot to push it down in everybody's timeline? I think he's trying to push the mugshot down. Just like, get, I want headlines for anything else. I want to push. I think you hired a big SEO guy? Right, I want to get, yeah, he's probably like, is that still Numerato Uno?
Starting point is 00:39:52 Let's see. I imagine Google image. Oh, it has to be. Tiger Woods is going to be, it's going to be number one. It's going to be mugshots, right? Yeah. What about the nude leaks? No, I don't think that's going to be.
Starting point is 00:40:05 Yeah, you can't get out on Google because most people have a safe search on. Not even close. It's all mugshots. If you Google Tiger Woods image. He's one, two, three, four, five. Number six now is the mugshot. So I'm honestly thinking he is trying to. You push it down on everyone's mind, on their timelines, and the Google searches.
Starting point is 00:40:25 Wow. I want something different instead of the mugshot. That could be it. Or he just wants, you know, people to take a look at his swing. Yeah, I mean, I'm not even seeing him on the first page here. That's crazy. He's the last one on the first page is something that says what happened, the most vexing question in sports. Once brilliant, earth-shattering greatest remains.
Starting point is 00:40:43 And then that's, oh, boy. So you're right. He's got a little more work to do to get that out of there. Yeah. But you're right. I think he's on to something here. Interesting. Wow.
Starting point is 00:40:52 Okay. I did not think we would get that news of him being completely cleared, whether that you think that means something or not. But it's like, because there have been reports and he has said it himself, there is a situation in a scenario where he doesn't come back at all, where he just doesn't play professional golf ever again. This is very contrary to all those reports. What a quick turnaround from him at the President's Cup buzzing around.
Starting point is 00:41:12 Yeah. With the headset on saying he might not play. We're an all white. So I got a comment too. He obviously posted the full driver's swing. Hank Haney, today's Monday. Hank Haney had a response on Twitter. He said, and I quote, that's a swing he could win with.
Starting point is 00:41:27 It's not across the line and stuck inside coming down. A little stiff looking, but it's good enough. Which I don't know if you follow Hank Haney, but he doesn't give out compliments all that often? No, especially not for Tiger. Not a big compliment guy. So for him to even say, for him to say that it's a swing he could win with is a huge praise, obviously from a guy who knows Tiger quite well. Yeah, and it's fun if you go down and you look at Tiger's swing,
Starting point is 00:41:48 you'll see all the replies of all the Twitter swing experts. Unbelievable. They're really good. Those guys know their stuff. You ever want any advice? You know what we should have done? I would go on there. What we should have done.
Starting point is 00:41:59 Next time you'll tell your post a video because apparently these are just going to keep coming. We're going to pull a bunch of those quotes and we're going to read them on the podcast. Yeah, you're right. We'll do that next week. Because there's no better summation of, yeah, it'll be next week. No better summation of Twitter than the greatest golfer potentially ever putting his swing on Twitter. And there being people under being like, I know how to do that better. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:18 And the people that give him, like, actual advice like he's reading it. You fucking idiot. So next week when Tiger's going to put out another video next weekend, whatever it is, we will pull a few those. We're going to pull the ones where we realize the person is not joking. So I do want to say that this marks the official start of this next Tiger comeback. This is official start of it. Certainly. Some of the videos you would think, but now that he's cleared, we are now there.
Starting point is 00:42:44 Folks, there is a great shirt out there on barstoolsports.com slash four. is the quick way to get to our store. Barshalsports.com slash F-O-R-E. We have our Make-Sundays Great Again shirt out there, which this thing was on the greatest trajectory of all time when we made it. It might have put the rest of the merch world out of business. Yes. And then he got hurt and just people stopped buying it.
Starting point is 00:43:07 This is time, folks. Get yourself a Make Sunday's Great Again's shirt. We might jack up the price when he's actually back. Right. So if you want to get yourself a Make Sunday's Great Again's shirt, Marshallsports.com slash 4. It's the hottest shirt in the streets. You can get the, there's two of them.
Starting point is 00:43:22 There's the red shirt with the black writing, or there's the red shirt with the white. Get them both. They're both real sharp. You get a lot of comments on them. People love them. I might go by a handful more and just start. That might be the only thing I wear is make Sunday's great. During this next comeback?
Starting point is 00:43:36 Until he wins the Masters. You know what's funny is we've been selling that shirt for a long time now. I can't even remember which comeback it was that we started selling those. I have no idea. Honest to God, I have no idea. I really don't. But I do know as soon as we started selling them, and our T-shirt guy was like, these are going nuts. Like, people love these.
Starting point is 00:43:53 And then he, Tiger basically died. Then he died. He died. Sad. That was a sad little break there. Yeah. And then he was like, you guys are going to have the Tiger shirts that they send to, like, the people in Africa who lose the Super Bowl. Right.
Starting point is 00:44:05 When you lose a championship, they're going to be wearing him. But now he's, hey, he's coming back. Make Sunday's great again. He's already wearing the red. He's going to start playing again, hopefully. I can't believe he posted a video of him wearing his legitimate. tournament Sunday outfit on Sunday. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:20 And he would tell you, like I said, he'd be like, no, I just want people to see. That's just what I was wearing. I want people to, yeah, I woke up and I put that on. I don't know. It's just the first thing in my closet on Sunday. It would not be in a golf shot. That's the first time we've ever, I think, broken news on this podcast that people are going to know about when they listen to it tomorrow, but it was new to us.
Starting point is 00:44:37 That's so exciting. I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight. Also, another golf headline, Pat Perez, C-I-M-B classic takes it down. Some great quotes to come out of this trend. Yes, he did. He said, this is funny. I thought it was funny coming off of our Gary Player interview, where Gary's all about moving, moving, moving, you got to keep working out, you got to eat right. Pat Perez says, and I quote, I'm still not going to work out. I'm still going to have a bad diet. I'm not going to change anything. I'm just going to enjoy this. Well said, Pat. And it's not, that's not rocket science. That's genius. Yeah. Pat Perez, okay, he, because he just won this tournament, he finished last year, 11th on the 2017 PGA Tour money list. He won $4.3 million, made it to the Tour championship where he finished 16th. So we got a huge payday out of that. And clearly was one of the most consistent best players on planet Earth last year throughout the entire year. You can't do the Duffner, which is you're the chubby, sick golfer. And then you decide, oh, I'm going to be better and get all in great shape and all that. And then you stink. Right.
Starting point is 00:45:41 That's what happened to Duff. That's exactly what happened. And even, like I said, our guy Gary Player, he tweeted out today, Pat Perez, many congratulations on your CIMB Classic Victory in Malaysia. Don't ever change your winning formula, my very best GP. Even Mr. Player gets it. It's right. This is your formula, man.
Starting point is 00:45:57 Don't change your diet. Do you do what you're fucking doing? He did say, like, I'm going to work hard. So, yeah, go grind out a couple things with the swing and all that. But if Pat Perez won and was like, you know, I really like this winning, I want more of it. I'm going to really commit. he would stink in a year he'd be terrible exactly you don't want to change it at all you don't want to and it's like you said guys who win when they're in great shape and they're doing all the right things
Starting point is 00:46:17 are hitting the gym five times a day good for them but if you can just eat like garbage and you know not work out then do that and that's there's been plenty of case studies duff is obviously the golf example who's the uh the actor there that was in oh god who am i thinking of i'm terrible you know i'm illiterate with celebrities yeah you are who's the actor that was in wolf of Wall Street. Jonah Hill? Yes. Where he was really funny, fat guy, gets jacked and is like, I'm going to, not funny anymore.
Starting point is 00:46:46 No. Goes back to being a fat fuck. Really funny. Fat is always funny. So, again, there's plenty of case studies. Good for Pat Perez. I liked to hear this. I didn't think it was surprising because you'd actually be crazy to change your winning
Starting point is 00:46:59 formula. People's golfer 2.0. Kegan Bradley, solo second. Finish 20 under par. Shout out to him. That was his highest finish, like in forever. Yeah, shout out to Keehan. I can't remember the exact, but he's had a hell of a year.
Starting point is 00:47:11 Kig's, since really kind of early summer has been absolutely buzzing. We had him on the podcast. Was that a month and a half ago? Something like that? I might have been longer than that even. A couple months ago. Yeah. Met him at the first time up at TBC River Highlands this year when he came barreling through the crowd,
Starting point is 00:47:25 throwing people out of the way just to make sure he could say hi and shake everybody's hand. How tall is he like six four, six five? He's just kind of a big lurch walking around up there. And like he's Keegan Bradley. He's a recognizable guy plowing through crowds to take a picture with a bunch of people wearing a Keegan, what did, Keegan versus the world? Keegan versus everybody. Everybody.
Starting point is 00:47:40 Yeah, Keegan's great. So, yeah, shout out to Keeggs. Hope he keeps playing well. We got the C.J. Cup at Nine Bridges. Folks, this is the first official PGA tour event in Korea ever. Ever. Ever. Ever.
Starting point is 00:47:54 It's a limited field, 78 players. I actually saw they were able to draw some good fucking names. J.T. is playing. J.D.A. is playing. Adam Scott. Daniel Berger, Patrick Reed, Ernie L. Ernie L's, R. Guy, Keigs. I think they said there's 10 major.
Starting point is 00:48:08 champions in the field, including Kigs. So that'll be kind of interesting to tune into. I think check it out. It's in Korea. Obviously, that's a hotbed in the women's game right now. I imagine it's only going to increase in the men's game and all that. So kind of a predictable move for the tour to get something going there. I got to tell you, I'm a little worried about JT.
Starting point is 00:48:28 He's kind of doing the thing. Remember when Spief had, what, the big 2015? Then he played every single overseas tournament and completely burned himself out. I'm following these JT snaps chats. And he is, he's going everywhere. He's doing everything. So I want J.T. to burn himself out. You do.
Starting point is 00:48:41 Here's why. Okay. I placed a wager in Pebble Beach that Jordan Speeth would win more majors next year than Justin Thomas. Okay. Yeah. Then you want him to play every single tournament that they put on. Wear yourself out, baby. Get out there, hack it up, go everywhere, travel over the world.
Starting point is 00:49:02 And hopefully, Spieth wins more majors. Right now I would say that's a very good bet. You think so? You like that one? I do. Yeah, I do. I think you're going to be just fine on that one. All right, next up, we got Matt Parziali, the U.S. Midam champ.

Starting point is 00:49:31 I'm a big drinker, so yeah. Did you think a bar down the street took out an ad on the four play golf podcast? I did. I would have been kind of pumped about it. that too. To really lure people in after work to crank a couple. Nope. Wrong.

Starting point is 00:50:18 No joke. Wow. Not a single joke. No sarcasm. I was like, where'd you guys get those ties? One of them had, it was a blue with some roses on it. I was like, that's a sharp-looking tie. He was getting a lot of compliments.
Starting point is 00:50:29 Tie bar. So you asked him where he got it? He said tie bar. And then did you say, oh, is that a bar down the street? I did not say that. I did not say that. I said, they're on our podcast, and I'm glad to do that. And I'm going to tell everybody about it now.

All right, we are now joined by, we're going to get into the bio, but a 30-year-old firefighter from Brockton, Mass, 2017 mid-am champ.
Starting point is 00:52:13 Matt Parsiali, what's up, man? Hey, hey, guys, how's it going? We just did a little chat on our own, so it's a little weird to say what's up twice. But life's good for you. Let's talk a little bit. I was just thinking about this right before we came on the show. I would imagine we have a good mix of our listeners. Some people probably know everything about what the U.S. Midam is.
Starting point is 00:52:35 Some people have heard of it, and other people probably have no fucking clue. So let's start. Why don't you just dial people in on kind of a quick, tell it to me like I'm five, what exactly the U.S. midam is? So, yeah, the midam is guys over 25. So we get rid of the college kids there. And it's a national tiering trip. You got to play a local qualifier.
Starting point is 00:53:00 thankfully I don't have to qualify this year because you ever know what can happen in 18 holes and then after your local qualifier you go to the you go to the championship proper where you start with 264 two days of stroke play you go to 64 for match play
Starting point is 00:53:16 then you play match play until there's one left so fortunate enough for me that was I was able to get that done this year yeah I kind of I wrote it my blog but I kind of described the midam is basically you just get rid of all like the stud up and coming college kids and it's kind of the best of.
Starting point is 00:53:32 Exactly, dude. I mean, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, those guys, I mean, they're locked in. The USAM is, I mean, that tournament's, I mean, I'm going to be able to play it next year for the second time, but that's, those kids are locked. I mean, they're, they're ready to go. They're ready to go for the next year.
Starting point is 00:53:49 So, this is the working guys. Perfect. That's why we got you. So let's do, let's talk a little bit about your background. We're obviously going to get into, you know, everybody. He loves to cling to your firefighter, Brockton, Mastkeye. Obviously, Barstool is big in mass, so our readers love it. We love it.
Starting point is 00:54:07 But you don't just fucking wake up, get out of bed, and win the midam. So what's your background, golf-wise, college golf? I know you played a little bit of mini-tourges. Just tell us a little bit more about, you know, your golf background. Yeah, so started a young age, just playing the Muni here in Brockton. And then high school, I went to the private club, Thorny Lee. It's the best place in the state. I mean, we got the best players.
Starting point is 00:54:28 to learn pretty much how to compete. Those guys are tough. And it's the best club. I mean, great mix of guys. Always have a good match. But, dude, I suck in high school. I couldn't break 80. I went to a small school in Florida just so I could play every day.
Starting point is 00:54:48 And I couldn't get a look anywhere. It was either D3, NAA. I was no good. But, dude, college, I got it. I was able to play every event. got the competitive juices flowing and really improved and I was around a great coach great group of guys had a bunch of fun and then yeah had some success tried the mini tours three years retired early from that figured uh wasn't for me even though I've loved to
Starting point is 00:55:16 compete just wasn't uh wasn't the lifestyle I was looking for and then my dad's a firefighter as well grew up watching him love his career so hey why not try it and walking off to gone and with the schedule we have I'm able to play a bunch of competitive golf and um yeah dude it's uh it's a fun ride i mean i'm playing the national mid-am like invitationals at pine valley sonnual dude you can't make it up it's living a dream you know that's absolutely phenomenal so so this was what was this your third time in the mid-am uh fourth yeah so you hadn't won in the last time i missed one yeah okay so you hadn't won a match before and then you go out and i mean You know, you had some tight battles.
Starting point is 00:56:01 You ended up in the final. You just roasted the guy, eight and six. What, you know, what kind of, what clicked? I mean, did you, could you tell in the last year? Like, I'm just fucking way better than I was, or what's different? So, you know, dude, I didn't hit a driver until this year. Last four years, I didn't have a driver in the back. That's insane, right?
Starting point is 00:56:21 Yeah, I wouldn't need you. I don't know why did that. It took me four years to figure it out. So, no, my guy, Sean Hester, up here. He's the best teacher around. I worked with him when I was a pro on and off for the last four years. But this year, I was like, you know what? Like, now's the time.
Starting point is 00:56:37 Dude, I saw him early. Went in like February. Worked my ass off for getting ready for the start of the year. Got the driver back in the bag, smashing that. And I can only say, I mean, it was huge how, dude, picked up like 35 yards a hole. I mean, you can't. That'd be nice. You know?
Starting point is 00:56:55 Yeah, it's huge. And, I mean, when I went to him, this was the goal. I mean, him and I have had the conversation. Like, dude, this is it. Like, this is what we're doing. I've had success at the local level. And now it was time to see how good I could get and bring it to the national level. And, dude, it happened a lot faster than I expected, you know.
Starting point is 00:57:15 Yeah, man. So talk a little bit about the match play. Was it the quarters where you kind of, you were several down and you kind of rallied to come back? Yeah. That's actually not even the craziest one, but I'll tell you that one first. The craziest one was 32. But in the quarters, I'm playing Brad Fratilly. I mean, he was the first 10 holes.
Starting point is 00:57:37 I don't think he hit it outside 10 feet. I'm like, wow, you know. I tried forcing a couple after he stuffed it and made a mess. Had a couple pots I thought I made, didn't go in. So, yeah, I'm four down at the turn. I said to myself, you know, let's just play the best nine holes. And in my head, I didn't realize I probably didn't have nine holes left. was four down.
Starting point is 00:57:57 So it was going to be able to pretty quick. Right. And then he gets up there and stuff it on 10 to 2 feet. I'm like, well, all right. Well, there goes that plan, you know. So they got the standard barriers out there for the first time, like, what the match stands at. I look, I'm like five down.
Starting point is 00:58:12 And he says, till he's five up, I'm like, geez. All right. So let's just get that to four. So on 12, I look at that four. Then it's at three. Then it's at that two. And then all of a sudden, I had a put on 17, got it to all square. and yeah man
Starting point is 00:58:28 I like I made four birdies on those holes and he he made a bogey on probably the toughest hole out there and yeah like he I don't know it was just I got the momentum and that's what matchplay is dude like I've played bad in one
Starting point is 00:58:43 and I've played good loss it's just the way this tournament is yeah and I will say just to flip it from his other side there's no worse feeling than when you're fucking leaking holes out there oh dude and I've been there it's just like you can't do anything it's just like oh my, and it's the worst feeling in the world, you know?
Starting point is 00:58:59 Yeah, it's just, that's the, that's the beauty of match play, you know. Yeah, and it's crazy too, because it's not like, you know, it's not like you're out there playing against a bunch of schmucks. I mean, everybody you're playing can absolutely play. Yeah, so like in the state am, our mass am, like, you can go out and shoot three over and win five and four, right? So you do that, the USM you lose in seven, I mean, the USMium, you lose in seven, six, you know.
Starting point is 00:59:21 Right. Yeah, it's a different level, but it's, uh, it's, it's, uh, it's a, you know, it's, It's awesome to compete with these guys. You know, a lot of these guys call it the cocktail tour, and that's the best part about it. We're all friends. We have a blast. I mean, it's great.
Starting point is 00:59:35 Yeah, I know I had a bunch of guys from Thorny Lee hit me up being like, you know, Matt, he's the man, he's the best. So we were obviously, we're, especially Friday, got into the office, I was a little hungover. I was like, I got something to root for today. Let's go. I was hung over Friday, too. Perfect.
Starting point is 00:59:50 This guy's perfect. So what happened around at 32 was even crazier? Yeah, so you wouldn't let know up by looking at the scorecard, but I'm playing Jared Barley from Michigan. The dude can just play. I mean, gets it in the hole, like just has all the shots. And we're going back and forth, making pars, and then I hit it in the only place you can't hit it on 16,
Starting point is 01:00:13 off the club. I'm like, Jesus. Like, what are you doing? You know? And I have no idea how I got the ship to six feet. I made it to stay even. I make a mess of 17. I hit a chip to a foot that I have no business hitting to a foot, stayed even.
Starting point is 01:00:29 In an 18, he pumps it down the middle. I whip hook it into the bunker, left, blocked out by a tree, and then he gets up there, 200 yards, hits it to 15 feet. I'm sitting in the bus, and I look at my dad. I'm like, what do I do? Like, he's 15 feet. I just had no idea. Like, I had no shot at the green.
Starting point is 01:00:46 So I decided to chip it out. I make a mess with the chip out, hit it into the right rough. And now I'm like, all right, this is great. So chunk it up there at about 20 feet and just make it. No, and off the potter, I was like, I knew it was going in. And fortunate for me, he missed the burgy pot, and we went to extra holes, and I got him there. But those three up and downs, I mean, they had to be the best three up and downs in my life in a row.
Starting point is 01:01:12 That poor guy, he's sitting around somewhere right now going, how the fuck did I lose that match? You know what, dude, he sent me a message. She's a great guy. I mean, but that's just what the mid-am is all about. like, do great guys, and he'll be a friend forever now. You know what I mean? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:26 It's really, you can't make it up. That's awesome. I mean, that's what it takes. So now you're at the point. I mean, we're in the Masters next year. The U.S. Open at Shinney, the U.S. AM at Pebble. Let's talk a little bit about the Masters. That's obviously the one everybody focuses on.
Starting point is 01:01:42 You know, nobody can get into the fucking Masters and Matt Parziali's in the Masters. I know. That doesn't even make sense. Yeah. Yeah. Has it sunk in yet? Does that even make sense? Dude.
Starting point is 01:01:51 No, so, I mean, someone's, I went like a bunch of group tax, you know, I did these days, and I'm flipping through, I got a million tax, and I'm all, like, my best friends in one, and they're talking about what, this one kid, everyone rags on for, like, he's a club pro, and he stinks, you know what I mean? So, so, yeah, Chuck, what do you shoot? You're like, 84, and they're all rag on them, and then I, then I, I chime in, like, fuck, like, I got to think about shooting a score at Augusta. You know what I mean? I didn't think about that. I only thought about playing. I got to go off the score. So that just hit me out of nowhere, you know? That's awesome. So when, I mean, when can you like start playing practice rounds? Can you show up early and be like I need a practice round with the Masters? How does that shit work? So, dude, I'm not going to ask. I'm going to let them tell me. The word on the street is once that you can go down as much. But it's only a like ring invite. That's what they call it.
Starting point is 01:02:48 So I'm trying to lay low until I get the invite. You know what I mean? Yeah. But I think you can use as much as you want is what I've heard once you get that invite, which that's, it's fake life to me. I can't even imagine. Oh, I like that a lot. So, I mean, I feel like if I were you, I'd be digging up, like, Tiger Woods Golf 2012 and playing the course like 200 times to get ready.
Starting point is 01:03:10 Dude, I already did it. No, I didn't. Yes. I need to, though. You do? I mean, I'd be, like, popping beers pretty much every night with the boys. be like, no, we got to train for Augusta night. Yeah, yeah, we're not doing anything else.
Starting point is 01:03:23 Yeah, we're not doing anything else. We're just going to play video games. So who's on your list for trying to play a practice round with? Dude, you only want is like, if Tiger's the dream. I play golf because of Tiger, you know. So, I mean, I was a perfect age. Hopefully he's playing. Dude, the swings, the videos, I was watching those night before the finals.
Starting point is 01:03:44 It got me going. It got me all fired up watching him hit balls again. So that's a lot. number one. I know it's crazy, but Phil's probably the number two, you know. Okay. I feel like you could swing that. I feel like, you know, Phil's got that... Yeah, buddies with Keegan, so we grew up
Starting point is 01:04:00 together, so maybe Keegan could get me in there with Phil. There you go. I like that. I'd like to see that a lot. So, U.S. Open then at Shini, I feel like, you know, last time it was there it was kind of a bloodbath. Are you going in? Do you think you got a better shot if it's a bloodbath or if it's
Starting point is 01:04:17 playing relatively easy? I think the harder the better for me. I mean, if it's easy, those guys just go nuts. I don't know if I can go nuts. You know, maybe I can hang if it's hard, right? Get lucky. That's kind of what I was thinking, too. Right.
Starting point is 01:04:31 It's like you can grind out some bars. Yeah, exactly. If they're just making birdie after birdie, unless it's like the finals the other day, which was crazy in itself, I mean, but that was like, you know, can't expect that every day. No, that's not going to be all the time.
Starting point is 01:04:46 But, yeah, I feel like if it's a tough track and those guys are out putting up, you know, if they're grinding out pares and something around even par, I feel like you can really come in with their number and have a shot. Yeah, I love that. Yeah. Have you ever played Jenny? I haven't, no, but I've got some offers, so I'm going to try and get down as much as they can. Dude, I'm trying to make the most of this.
Starting point is 01:05:07 And that's what, like, right now, like, trying to make these plans, like, work and all this stuff. Like, it's going to be, it's exciting, but it's going to be a lot of work to figure out. So talk a little bit about work. You know, you work for the fire department. How does, first of all, just how does all that play in with, you know, trying to play elite level golf, practice schedule, all that shit? So I got a bunch of days off where I'm able to work on my game.
Starting point is 01:05:37 I can have a club in my hand six days a week, a lot of eight days. We work two out of eight days, two 24s is our schedule. But tournament-wise, I get some swaps. I get used the vacation days and make it work. But it's really good because for me, staying sharp as playing competitive golf, and I'm able to do a lot of that with my schedule. Yeah, I mean, I love my career. It's great.
Starting point is 01:06:00 I work with a great group of guys. It's fun. It's a blessed. Yeah, your old man's a firefighter, and he doubles as your caddy, too, right? Yeah, yeah. I think caddine's more of his primary job now. He's got to be jacked up. Are we going to see him out of Augusta?
Starting point is 01:06:16 So the first thing he says, he goes, I don't know if I can do Augusta. So this is a funny thing. He goes, yeah, I don't know how to read the greens out there. I look at him, I go, you haven't read a green in 10 years from me. Why are you worried about reading them now? And I'll tell you why. I'm at the U.S.A.M. at Hazeltine in 06. I asked him for a read.
Starting point is 01:06:34 He says, two cups out the left. And it was two cups out to the right, and I made it. And I said, you're never reading another pot again. He hasn't read a text. Put him through a little test, then you just know forever. You're like, all right, you can't read green. Yeah, exactly. So, USAM at Pebble as well, another one on your list for next year.
Starting point is 01:06:51 You're going to have a pretty fucking good year next year, by the way. Dude, I had someone texting me this morning at Zamb Group, and it was the top five courses in the country, and it was Pine Valley, Shini, Augusta, and Pebble, and then the one Cyprus, and they said, Paz is going to play for the five top in the country next year, because we have the Crump Cup, and that's in September. But so got a pretty sweet schedule coming out, man.
Starting point is 01:07:18 So Pebble, you know, that's U.S.A.M. is at Pebble. You know, you'll be the mid-am defending champ at that point. I feel like you've got to go in there thinking you're going to have a shot. Yeah, you know, and that's supposed to get married one of those days. So we're in the process of changing that date right now. Oh, wow. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:07:39 And you know what? She came down. She came down for the final. and she I mean she obviously knows like I'm like a pet of golf but she didn't understand it so did you try to tell a girl to change
Starting point is 01:07:51 the wedding date? I mean imagine that right yeah how did that conversation you go to play golf I got to play golf that day right so I told her this like months ago like there's a chance if I qualify and I career that week I might not be at the wedding
Starting point is 01:08:05 and so she's like yeah yeah yeah whatever as soon as the final is over she goes okay we can change a date like she was down there she saw how huge it was. She saw how much it meant. She's awesome, man. I mean, I couldn't ask for anything else, you know? Very smart of you to preface that a couple months in advance. Be like, this is a real thing. Yeah, exactly. Right. But now she understands it's a real thing. So now we're working on the changes. So do you have
Starting point is 01:08:29 you have a little bit of a squad down there, cheer and yawn? Yeah, I do. That was pretty special. So I knew my best friend Greg Chalice was driving down from Indie. He moved out to India a few years ago, and I knew Allie was coming down. And I told him, Greg, I said, dude, just take care of her and just get her to the course because I was just trying to get a good night's sleep, which obviously I didn't. I could have picked her up and did the same as me, laying, toss and turn in the hotel. You know what I mean? Right. So he was great. He picked her up from the airport. They came with the course. But then we get out there, and then one guy shows up, and then another two. And before you know it, there's like 10 or 15
Starting point is 01:09:04 guys from up here, whether from Thorny Lee or guys that play state stuff with. And, dude, that was like, that meant a lot. And to have them, there made it that much more special. It was awesome. So was there, have we, have we done a little bit of a celebration at Thorny Lee yet? Yeah. So, uh, dude, I got home 2.30, missed my flight, first one out of Atlanta Friday. Got home at 2.30, worked the next morning at 7, right at the fire station. That was pretty sweet. That was fun. Yeah. I got out at 5, went straight to Thorny Lee, got real fucked up. Everyone was there. It was awesome. And then went straight back to work. yesterday morning and got out this morning.
Starting point is 01:09:44 So it's been a rough couple, 48, but it's all worth it. Just running on adrenaline, baby. Yeah, man. Yeah, it's not going to run out any time soon. I don't think either. All right, man, Matt Parsiali, going to the Masters, going to the U.S. Open, going to play the U.S. at Pable, also playing at Pine Valley. So you got a pretty good year next year.
Starting point is 01:10:08 We'll be talking to you plenty, I'm sure. So yeah, man, we really appreciate it. Congrats again, and hopefully we'll talk to you soon. Absolutely. Thanks for having me on, guys. That was our first, was that our first amateur golfer that we had on the show? I think so, yeah. Good get.
Starting point is 01:10:23 What a guy. What a guy. Love that he's like, yeah, I was kind of cranking a couple beers the night before the final of the U.S. Midam to go to the Masters, the U.S. Open. It's very on brand for us to have a guy like that, a firefighter, a cool dude, a guy who can sit down and shoot the shit, and all, by the way, he's going to play in the Masters. Love seeing one of our guys out there getting life wins. Very cool. Very, very cool.
Starting point is 01:10:42 What a 2018, Maddie Parsiali is going to have. We are going to do our best to bring it to you as best we can. We're going to talk to Matt. We're going to try to do some behind-the-scenes stuff, especially building up to the Masters, and we'll obviously be covering it on the blog, on Twitter, and all of that. But Matt's obviously an awesome dude. A lot of his good buddies that he plays golf with are as stooly as they come.
Starting point is 01:11:09 Yep. He texted me and was like, I've been a stoolie since I've like 07. That's so cool. So that's one of our guys. He's the man. We really appreciate him hopping on. That was a really cool, interesting insight that's different from the pro golfer, I feel. Yeah, that's like what we said when we put out feelers for guests.
Starting point is 01:11:23 We want interesting people like Matt Parziali. People like that are very cool and it'll bring something different to the show. And a lot of you out there that are members at clubs, just kind of your local club or whatever, you know, you kind of got, basically imagine that, you know, that guy that you know at your club. It's like, yeah, he's sick. He plays in a lot of amateur tournaments and stuff. That guy just qualifies for the Masters. So cool.
Starting point is 01:11:42 basically what happened. Very cool. Matt Parsiali, the man, hopefully we'll get more from him going forward.
