We are back this week with another installment of She Harvey Oswald. Buckle up friends, because from here on out our series-within-a-series on the two would-be female assassins who set their sites on President Gerald Ford is going to get increasingly and precipitously weirder. In this episode we start with a little scene setting by covering Project Bluebird—that Cold War era CIA backed mind control program that was the predecessor to Project Artichoke, which then evolved into the infamous Project MKULTRA. Remember, our protagonist, Sara Jane Moore (nee Kahn), presented a highly interesting psychological/neurological profile: she suffered recurrent fainting spells, followed by bouts of amnesia. And given her enlistment in the military-affiliated Civil Air Patrol at the tender age of 15 (not to mention her dad’s employment with weapons manufacturer DuPont Chemical), she was on Uncle Sam’s radar from jump. During the time period covered in this episode, Sara Jane Kahn Anderson divorces her first husband, Wally Anderson, shortly after her White House amnesia episode. At just about the same time, she starts a relationship with a man 17 years her senior, a Captain in the U.S. Air Force with connections to the psy-war of his own… Sydney Lewis Manning. This episode presents probably the single deepest dive on Manning, the father of FOUR of Sara Jane’s forgotten children. We’re connecting dots that others who’ve covered the assassination attempt didn’t even see. And it tells the story of what happened to those kids, and to Sara Jane’s role as mother to them, as she makes her way out to Kkkalifornia.Before signing off on this one we read into the record excerpts from the 1979 prison interview (on file with the hosts), which offer the only record evidence of Sara Jane addressing the issue of her early life and marriages. What happened? How'd I get here? The pain. So unexpected and undeserved had for some reason cleared away the cobwebs. I realized I didn't hate the cabinet door. I hated my life. My family. Are you okay, Daddy? What happened? My backyard. Thing would ever change. Nothing new could ever be expected. Ugly things and surprising things and sometimes little wondrous things. Spill out in me constantly. Or imperialism, as the slave system of the West is called, is not something that's just confined to England or France or the United States. Every nation, in every region, now has a decision to make. So it's one huge complex or combine.

Either you are with us or you are with the terrorists. And this international power structure is used to suppress. the masses of dark-skinned people all over the world and exploit them of their natural resources. We found no evidence of conspiracy, foreign or domestic, the Warren Commission of science. I'll never apologize for the United States of America, ever. I don't care what the facts are. In 1945, we began to require information which showed that there were two wars going to do. There were two wars kind of. His job, he said, was to protect the Western way of life.

The primitive simplicity of their minds renders the more easy victims of a big lie than a small law. For example, we're the CIA. Now he has a mile. He's been so long as to die. Freedom could never be secure. It usually takes a national crisis. Freedom can never be secure. Pearl Harbor.

This week, we are coming back at you, back to our home base, back to our foundational truth of Jerry World and our ongoing series within a series, Shee Harvey Oswald. And maybe we've even ventured at this point into a series within a series territory, because for those of you keep in score, you know that Shee Harvey Oswald, is about two would be assassins. Squeaky From Me and Sarah Jane Moore.

And over the last, I don't know how many episodes, I think two, maybe three. I think it's been two episodes that we've turned away from Squeaky and turned towards Sarah Jane Moore. And we are just so excited to be here. We say it every episode because it's pretty much undeniable at this point that Sarah Jane Moore is true. truly the one would be assassin deserving of the she Harvey Oswald moniker because, I mean, up until now, I think we've sort of proven our point, I think. But now is when things will even get

even we're really going to drive the point home. I think in this episode, as you say, Don, it's going to be chock full of all sorts of exclusive and what we, humbly submit our first time facts being shed to light. The first time reporting that we're going to be doing in this next hour and I think in the next episode and on, I think it's the first time in the history of the world that this stuff has come out and seen the light of day. But before we get into it, right, at least making the connections that we are making between it, right? Like obviously we have sources that we rely. on and all the rest of it. But as far as putting together this information in one place in order

to weave and deepen the narrative of Sarah Jane more, yeah, you won't find it anywhere. Draw the inferences and the conclusions that we draw, or perhaps the case theory that we put together by the end of this one. I think it's, you're going to have a good time, listener. If you like the stuff we put out, I think that this episode, will go down as one of the greats. And before we get into all of that, let's, as we always do, do a brief recap and a roadmap of what we have in store today, as well as what we've gone through up until now.

So we started our last episode on Sarah Jane Moore by covering her early childhood and teenage years during which you'll recall she was a standout student. She excelled in her coursework and in extracurriculars. Remember that she was a gifted linguist and she was a gifted actor. And she was a very much would be considered, could be considered a leader in her cohort. But the problem was she also apparently had trouble with or didn't care about making any friends, right? She wasn't there to make friends. She was there to make a name for herself.

I think I called her a bit of a square peg or an oddball in the last episode, and I think that very much applies. And, you know, even, for example, even as her older sister was involved in the local church, she was not interested. Sarah Jane Moore was not interested in doing any sort of church group or any sort of social activity that her other siblings were very active in. No, Sarah Jane Moore was not interested in socializing, and while she may not have had much love for the boys in the ordinary 1940s teenage girl kind of way, she did have love for a certain uncle. That uncle, of course, was Uncle Sam, because when the country went to war, Sarah Jane joined the Civil Air Patrol cadets. and for those of you who might be thinking, is that the same Civil Air Patrol Cadets, military for teens outfit that Lee Harvey Oswald joined under the tutelage of David Ferry

and that CIA asset Viola June Cobb? Yes, it is. That's right. And we picked up a lot of, of the threads about the CAP because while, you know, it's well known as a part of the Oswald mythos, because of the whole pre-existing relationship between Oswald and his New Orleans handler, David Ferry, right, who was this oddball figure connected to New Orleans mob boss, Carlos Marcello, and who was purporting to be a kid.

cancer researcher, connected with intelligence, all the rest of it. Well, what's less known is the ways in which the CAP, besides being an indoctrination hub for the nation's youth in the time of its heyday during the Cold War, it was also a business opportunity for would-be entrance into the military industrial complex would be entrance like D. Harold Bird, the Texas Oilman, who founded the Texas CAP, and who, of course, owned the Texas School Book Depository from which Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly fired the fatal shots that killed President John F. Kennedy. And so we unpacked quite a bit of that, and we focused on the CAP unit or wing in West Virginia that Sarah Jane Moore

joined up as a 15-year-old. But the real interesting part about Sarah Jane's experience in the CAP was this mysterious incident that happened to her when she was 16 years old during her service in the CAP, she just disappeared from Charleston, West Virginia, from her home, from her school, from her patrol unit, from everything, from her friends, from her family. She was nowhere to be seen for three whole days, which is a pretty long time in a pretty small and tight-knit community there. So after she got back, of course, we recounted how she purported not to remember anything about what had happened to her. And the doctor checked did not find any signs of an assault or of any injury. There was no evidence of any kidnapping. So everybody just chalked it up to

amnesia and moved along with their lives. And that is something that is a big first in the life story of our protagonist. Because it's a first, it's not a last, right, Dick? It's not a last and it's an ongoing thing, right? And so, as you say, they just go back to their lives. Sarah Jane and her family just move on from the incident. And, you know, Sarah Jane goes on through her schooling. and after high school and after a very brief stint in nursing school, Sarah Jane was back in uniform for the old red, white, and blue, and this time joining the WAC in January of 1949. That's the Women's Army Corps for any of those out there who don't remember.

Of course, if you haven't listened to the last episode and to all the preceding ones, you better do that before moving on. But we'll just repeat the basics because, yes, we do believe that repetition breeds retention. That's right. That's right. I know we get a lot of folks out in the comments being like, what's with these recaps and roadmaps? It's because we are trying to, we're trying to build a universe here. We're trying to build a story here.

And this kind of stuff, I got to say, it's dense. And the best way to get it across, I think, is by. doing these recaps and roadmaps. So back to Sarah Jane, back to the story at hand. So now she's joined the WAC and by November 1949 she is married for the first time she gets married to a Marine Staff Sergeant named Wally Anderson. So we can put this down in the column of spouses and put it down as marriage number one to Wally Anderson. And again, this is when her military service is again complicated by these feigning spells. And so she is sent to Washington, D.C. in March 1950 for observation and treatment at none other than Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital.

And she was there for at least six weeks before she made national news for the first time in her life. life. This one's another weird one. So what happens is that Sarah Jane is found. She's fainted on the sidewalk right outside the White House. She's got no idea on her, but she does have a stack of pictures of herself stuffed in her dress. And when she comes to, she's no memory of who she who she is or where she came from and she had no ability to even recognize her own mother. Now, this was in April 1950 right around the time that the military and the CIA were just dipping their talents. Maybe at this point they were ankle deep, but, and maybe even up to their knees or maybe even up to their beaks in the waters of mind control.

And so we ended the episode by relying on that source that we have here on file with your favorite two noided podcaster, the Sarah Jane's 1979 prison interview wherein she discussed the possibility of her having been mind controlled and concluded in that interview that, yes, quote. I definitely was controlled. Definitely. I don't like the word brainwashed, but I was programmed and conditioned. And according to her, the relevant beginnings came in the 1950s. That's right. And that's pretty much where we're going to pick things up this week.

And as previewed, right, like, you better sit down for this one, you know, do your chores. Ors, do your laundry, try not to do anything else that requires a lot of mental attention because you're going to miss some... Don't operate any heavy machinery. No, no, no. Do not, unless it's a vehicle. And in which case, you know, enjoy the drive, but keep your eyes on the road and your ears peeled here because there's some heavy shit coming your way.

Because up until now, as we've been saying, right? books, including, of course, Jerry Spielers, book Housewife Assassin, the purported definitive biography of Sarah Jane Moore, also the movies, the documentary, which certainly adds value. We're not dissing the creators of these sources. And even there's a musical, Assassins by acclaimed playwright Stephen Sondheim that covers Sarah Jane Moore in part. But all of these published sources, they really focus on her relationship with the FBI,

which is something that pops off, of course, close in time, close-ish in time, to her deed in San Francisco, September 75. But what none of these sources dig into at all, and which, you know, your boys are going to guide you Virgil-like through. these dark woods, Nel Mezzo, right? You are Dante, we are Virgil, taking you into the infernal world

of the CIA's potential recruitment and control of Sarah Jane Moore. Now, without any further ado, let's get digging. As this 1952 CIA memo says, the aim is controlling an individual to the point where he will do our bidding against his will, and even against such fundamental laws of nature as self-preservation. A decision was made at the highest levels of the CIA to do testing on unwitting Americans.

As one CIA document says, such testing would be operationally realistic. I think every last one of us felt sorry to attempt this kind of thing. We knew we were crossing the line. Ever since you touched my hand... We're looking for fundamental information on compounds that would be capable of causing changes in behavior, changes in... mental attitude. Did you ever consider what would have happened if any of these substances were given to say unwitting people?

Oh, I don't remember having considered that specifically. I... ...theirmyl from now I'm forever... The CIA was not the only government agency interested in the possibilities LSD and other drugs presented for mind control. The Army Chemical Corps first started working with the CIA and then branched off on its own. It too tested drugs on unwitting victims, and a death would result. Other Army experiments continued on mental patients around the country.

Work done involved several drugs, hallucinogenics, and electrodes implanted in the brain. A report of a woman who had electrodes implanted in the brain and was then given LSD and other drugs. She became agitated, cried, lapsed into a trance-like state, experienced waves of darkness and light, and bizarre sensations in her neck and legs, since somebody was trying to manipulate her body. At this point, Dr. Monroe wrote that the woman was obviously having paranoid ideas. Okay, so Sarah Jane Moore's incident, the fainting spell, where she lands in front of the White House, that happened in April 1950

I should say the incident and the subsequent hospitalization happened in April 1950 it bears reading into the record at this time a memorandum from the CIA's chief of the inspection and security staff

Sheffield Chef Edwards to then CIA director Admiral Roscoe Hill Encoder on April 5, 1950, just two weeks before the incident. Subject, Project Bluebird. There is submitted for your approval and authorization for allocation of funds, Project Bluebird. In view of the extreme sensitivity of this project and its covert nature, it is deemed advisable to submit this project directly to you,

rather than through the channel of the Projects Review Committee. Knowledge of this project should be restricted to the absolute minimum number of persons. This project is now extremely important because of the expressions of interest in this type of a program developing in various areas of the agency. It is most important that these varied interests be brought into a single project where appropriate controls can be exercised. This will avoid compromise of our techniques and interest in this field. It is requested that this project be approved and authorization granted for the necessary funds as set forth in the attachment.

The memorandum then goes on to describe an agreed proposal by several high ups in the agency derived from a March 14 meeting. The purpose of this project is to provide for the immediate establishment of interrogation teams for the operational support of OSO, the Office of Special Operations. operations, and OPC, Office of Policy Coordination. The teams will utilize the polygraph drugs and hypnotism to attain the greatest results in interrogation techniques. It is important that this project be established inasm as much as a considerable public and government interest has recently developed in the use of hypnotism for interrogation and for personality control purposes. This interest stems from the recent spot. trials in Hungary and other satellite countries. Within a number of areas of CIA, there has developed considerable interest in the field of hypnotism,

and one of the basic purposes of this proposal is to bring all such interests within the purview and control of a single project. It is extremely important that any action by CIA in these fields be restricted to the knowledge of a minimum number of persons on a top secret basis to prevent compromise and unfavorable repercussions. Further, activities in this field are so highly specialized that untrained personnel should not experiment or attempt to apply the techniques of hypnotism under any circumstances. This project will provide highly qualified and technical personnel to perform all aspects of interrogation for all areas of the agency. The immediate purpose of the program is to provide interrogation teams

utilizing the cover of polygraph interrogation to determine the bona fides of high potential defectors and agents and also for the collection of incidental intelligence in such projects. A team is to be composed of three persons consisting of a doctor psychiatrist, a polyps, polygraph hypnotist and a technician. It is proposed that two teams be established to meet current anticipated requirements, as it will require approximately five months to adequately train two polygraph hypnotists, I and SS, that is the division of inspection and security staff, right? The one that Chef Edwards is heading up, the one that is taking the lead here,

will make available immediately its hypnotist specialist for field assignments in order that a team will be immediately available for service. To complete the team, a doctor and a technician will also be required for immediate service. In order to provide for two teams, it is proposed that two doctor's psychiatrists, two polygraph hypnotists, and two technicians be authorized under this process. project. In this manner, one team will be available for immediate service, and within six months, two full-time teams will be established. It is further proposed that the doctor, psychiatrists, be set up in an office in Washington, which will serve as a cover for training, experimentation, and indoctrination purposes in the use of drugs and hypnotism. The doctors will be available for field assignments with the interrogation teams. All training of the team personnel will be conducted

by I and SS. The team personnel, when not on field assignments, will be utilized for defensive training of covert personnel, study, and experimentation in the application of these techniques. This project is for the defensive use at this time of drugs and hypnotism. However, positive application of hypnotism will not be used until further experience in this field has been obtained and subject to approval of the DCI. Maybe we should take a minute to unpack that there, Dick. What do you think? That's kind of a lot. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so this is like what, weeks before, just weeks before Sarah Jane has this episode and ends up in Walter Reed and is in Washington, D.C., there is,

is this memo that is basically saying, let's do this top secret thing. Let's do this top secret thing where we are effectively deploying this cutting edge new sort of space. And it's not yet, you know, nowadays people think of hypnotism and all of that as a pseudoscience. But this is cutting edge stuff, albeit kooky. basically the government is saying we are going to explore this idea of mind control, right? Totally. Yeah.

I mean, this is pre-MK. Ultra, right? We're in 1950. And it's another one of these things where the official narratives will direct you to Project MK Ultra was started in 1953, blah, blah, blah. No, this is early. 1950, it refers back to a March 14th, 1950 meeting among the uppermost echelons of the CIA,

and it's memorialized here at the beginning of the month of April, and saying that there is immediately available a hypnotist specialist that is under the employ of inspection and security staff. So all this is like ready to go. It's more of a memorialization of stuff that's already in the world. Right, exactly. And it's involving it only, it's basically on a need to know basis involving just the higher ups, right? These are, this is not a project that is getting broad visibility by any measure.

The other thing that we should talk about very quickly, it's something I think we've talked about before to sort of show the urgency in all this is the, quote, recent spy trials. and Hungary that they're referencing, right? And I believe these are the trials that came out that showed that the Soviets were also perhaps using mind control techniques. Well, this is what the pretext was for the U.S. to launch into this type of research. Now, I've always been dubious myself of the chicken or the egg issue here. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.

Because in any event, right, the Germans during World War II, the Nazis, many of whom had or were in the process of being patriated to the United States under false identities, had already begun studying and developing techniques for mind control for several years at this point. same goes for the Japanese and their torturers. And so the trial that they're referring to, of course, is the trial of Cardinal Minzenti, the Hungarian priest who made a bunch of confessions. But the techniques that were used on him, as far as anybody can tell, I don't know that the historical record on this has ever revealed any particularly special or hypnotic techniques beyond just your run-of-the-mill, isolation, sleep deprivation, you know, your torture, your light torture that might be deployed. Which I think came, yeah, I think it, for me, it does fall into that same category of, like, mind control, if you will. like what we call torture and it certainly is torture but this idea like in this era this this idea of like sleep deprivation and all of that stuff like uh i think it can fall under this broader category of mind control or hypnosis even because it does put you in the state where you're able to receive and sort of respond to all sorts of things um and and let your guard down uh but i think calling it pretext is

actually a really good way to put it. My point is that within this document, they're basically pointing to a recent event and sort of bringing up a sense of urgency that this needs to happen now for the fight between the communists and basically Western freedom-loving Americans. Right.

And a brief word on the audience for documents like this certainly chef edwards was not anticipating when he put pen to paper here that there would be later on a freedom of information act or any other legislative mechanism that would entitle everyday people to access materials like this of a highly classified highly secretive nature. That being said, it would be expected that documents like this could be distributed among other people with the requisite security clearance up to and including the president of the United States. And so, you know, when you, like all this to say, I wouldn't take it face value the fact that it's presented in a defensively.

light to necessarily mean sincerely exactly what it says, right? It's written by an individual with his own agenda and there is a component of cover your ass, right, your old C-Y-A going on if and when the higher-ups all the way up the chain of command get their eyes on this. You can't very well just say that we are going to go ahead and start hypnotizing and drugging Americans for research purposes to develop mind control techniques. You've got to have some pretext to do it. Yeah, right. You know, this is America.

When someone says, I'm going to start drugging and hypnotizing a bunch of Americans, my first question is going to be why? Why are we doing that? Exactly. And I did misspeak. Minzenti was not executed. He was sentenced to life in prison after his trial in 1949. And so, you know, for all that the propaganda, the anti-Soviet propaganda that this was such an affront, you know, at least, at least they did not kill the guy.

even if, you know, he was not guilty of whatever he confessed to. But I really have no opinion on that. I haven't looked into the underlying allegations. But suffice it to say, it's certainly rolled out as a justification for any number of things that the CIA would go on to do under the auspices of this so-called defensive mind control research and operations that were spurred off, you know, beginning with this Project Bluebird. Project Bluebird evolves into Project Artichoke, and Project Artichoke in 1953 evolves into Project MK Ultra, which we all know and love.

And for those interested, we do have an episode that covers a bit at least, of Project Artichoke, does it not, with a fella by the name of, I should say, the great fella by the name Jeffrey Kay? That's right. That's right. Because, of course, with all of these events, the Jeffrey Kay episode was in the context of the tentacles of Project Artichoke that reached their way into the aftermath of the JFK assassination. and here we see Project Bluebird embracing the...

Yeah. A little bit of an origin story. Exactly, exactly. And of course, we're not saying for sure, we'll get into it. We will get into it, listener. Hold on tight. We're not saying that there's like... But before you get your hopes up too high, right?

There's not like a smoking gun that's going to say that Sarah Jane Moore, Sarah Jane Khan was a subject of Project Bluebird. That doesn't exist. And obviously, given the secrecy concerns, we don't expect to find anything like that. But what we are going to do in this episode, in the next episode, and on and on, this is another one of these series that just,

the deeper you dig, the longer it takes to get it all out on the record. but there is certainly a case to be made that there's an intersection. We're building our case theory. We're building our case theory given the time period, the proximity in the time period, the nexus that Sarah Jane Moore is going to these places where these things were happening, given the behaviors, given the event. We're building a case of sorts here to allow you, our dearest listeners out there, to draw your own inferences because we're surely going to draw our own inferences and conclusions

and we invite you to do the same. So let's just button this up here. This is Project Bluebird in April of 1950, referring back to events in March of 1950 and earlier. And they're talking about you know, drugging and hypnotizing Americans for the purpose of the effectively for the benefit of the United States in the fight against communism, or ostensibly for the benefit of the United States and the fight against communism. So that was sort of the spookier side of our tale,

and I think now is a good time to come back to the main character of this story, who at this time is going by Sarah Jane Anderson or Sarah Jane Con Anderson, but not for long. So recall that the episode was in, the incident was in April of 1950 by November of 1950. Just a year after tying the knot with her first husband, Wally, Sarah Jane had not only left him and the whack in the dust. She was remarried to a new guy. So this is now husband number two. Sidney Lewis Manning. Manning at the time was a captain, end quote, career officer, according to Jerry Spuehler, with the U.S. Air Force. Now Jerry Spuehler would have us believe that Sid was just a regular Joe Army type fellow. And she says,

hardly anything about him in her book Housewife Assassin. But you know we're not going to just ride the surface like that. And boy, there is a whole life beneath the surface here on Sid Manning. Don, why don't you fill us in? Sure thing. So Sidney Lewis Manning, and it also bears mentioning that is another guy whose name lends itself to multiple spellings. So in the public reporting about him,

to the extent that there is any, will typically switch back and forth. So you'll find articles that spell Sydney, S-Y-D-N-E-Y, and you'll find other articles that spell it S-I-D-N-E-Y. You'll find articles that spell his middle name, Lewis, L-E-W-I-S, You'll also find articles that spell his middle name, L-O-U-I-S. So not saying that this is necessarily contrived or deliberate, but it is one of these names that just lends itself to games, let's say, in the historical record.

And he was born in California. He enlisted in the Air Force out of high school and moved. down SoCal way to attend the University of California at Los Angeles, UCLA. And it's unknown exactly what year, but he didn't earn his degree there, but jumped over across town to the University of Southern California, and he earned his bachelor's degree in psychology. After college is when he entered the service for the army as a clinical psychologist and a psychometrist. Hey, Don, what's a psychometrist? Good question, Dick. I was hoping you might ask that, because I didn't know myself.

So I looked it up, and a psychometrist is a highly specialized healthcare professional who administers and scores standardized psychological, neurological, neurological, psychological and cognitive tests. And so these are your like personality tests, your evaluation type test, the, what is it, the Minnesota multifacic personality assessment, the big one that is used all over the place. So he was doing that. And part of Sid Manning's job description while he was in the army was, dealing with family members of service members and with teenage children of service members who were

having some trouble making adjustments to military life. And among his critical deployments at this time was a stint at Fort Lee, Virginia. Fort Lee is the home of the Army's mental hygiene clinic. and it was also at the time that he was stationed there, the home of the WAC training facility. So Sarah Jane Moore, after she was stationed at the Carlisle Barracks in Pennsylvania, which we discussed last time, right? That was the place where the Indian school had been. It was the place where the propaganda school, for lack of a better word, was hosted. After that, she went to Fort Lee to undergo some more training there.

And presumably that was where she exhibited her fainting spells. And presumably, again, that is what brought her into contact with this army psychologist, Sidney Manning in the first place. Right, to perform some mental hygiene. Yeah, exactly. So like what became a marriage started out most probably as a doctor-patient, in fact, psychologist-patient relationship. And of course, it was a highly unusual patient because not just everybody is fainting and forgetting who they are every so often, right? This is a very unusual profile.

Yeah, and not just fainting, right? With what she'll call later on in certain interviews, she has these fugue states, right? Where it's like she doesn't know what happened. Okay, so we are now in 1951. And Sid is recalled to active duty in the Army Air Force as a navigator in the Strategic Air Command, and by now has attained a rank of captain. And so in 1951, he was stationed in Arizona, presumably at the Davis-Montan Air Force Base near Tucson,

where the Strategic Air Command was headquartered at the time. And it is in 1951 that the SACC was making plans for the pilots who were raining down death from the skies upon the people of North Korea in that genocidal war. Right. The AllJet B-52 bomber heads the list of America's outstanding aggression deterrence on display at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. Strategic Air Command's leader, General Curtis LeMay, reviews the imposing panorama of air power. Ten years of exercising a potent stabilizing force that has been a major factor in preventing

the outbreak of global war. and has given sustenance to hopes of continued world peace. It should be a great personal satisfaction to every member of the Air Force and to the Strategic Air Command that on this 10th anniversary, the power of this global strike force is recognized by every nation in the world. It should be a matter of personal pride to those who wear the Air Force uniform that the combat capability of the Strategic Air Command, which their technical skills and devotion to duty is built,

has been a most convincing voice for peace during the past decade. There will be no less need for dedicated men in the Air Force during the next decade. SAC's position of strength on this 10th anniversary must be maintained, as it seems to be the free world's best hope of continuing peace. I'm confident the challenges of the future will be met as they have been met in the past, and because of this confidence, I wish to salute all SAC personnel on our 10th anniversary for the past and future contribution to peace through global air power. Armed with the finest weapons in the world,

Strategic Air Command has done its part to ensure a decade of security through global air power. This is where, to Jerry Speeler's telling of it, where Sarah Jane kind of makes her first foray into the housewife lifestyle. Suburban, she's living, you know, on or near the base. She's popping out kids like it's nobody's business. And this is where she kind of falls into the role of the suburban housewife in Jerry's telling. But I think that, well, for reasons we'll discuss in a minute, there's much more to it than that. But to just play along for a minute, I think that it is kind of interesting to

consider some of the parallels for a woman in that position at the time. So recall that we discussed in our Jerry World series when we were in the sort of 40s, 50s era of that time when Jerry Ford and Betty Blumer Warren were falling in love with each other, that this was a time when the ideological shift from wartime mobilization against a global enemy in the form of the Axis powers was giving way to preparedness in the Cold War footing for a much worse world war, a nuclear world war, against the new enemy, our former friends, the Soviet Union. And of course, this is the time when the heroes of World War II are being

lionized as brave warriors for the cause of justice and liberty and equality. And those heroes who espoused those values against fascism, well, the same values were now being deployed against communism, against that red menace. It's very interesting when you think about it from this perspective in hindsight, knowing as we do how the concept of totalitarianism was developed propagandistically precisely to equate fascism and Nazism with communism, even though, of course, the objectives of those two ideologies are polar opposites and the real victors of World War II were the Soviets who gave some 20 million lives

in the service of defeating fascism and who would go on, of course, after, the end of the war to support liberation movements against Western colonialism throughout the so-called third world. And Dick, maybe you want to talk a little bit about how that trickled down into the domestic stage. Sure. And so that is happening in the international stage. And in the US, right, these World War II heroes have come home and they've taken positions, leadership positions in the community, in government, in business, and at home, through the budding, fledgling U.S. intelligence system out in Europe, there is this red scare that's coming back home, and at home it's coming in the form of McCarthyism, where you have Congress in conjunction with the Department of Justice,

basically prosecuting and persecuting people at home for being reds and blacklisting them and holding these hearings and calling folks out for being sympathizers with communism. And you have, of course, plenty of military engagements, most notably at this time was the Korean War, which we mentioned, right, the genocide that occurred there in the name of justice, liberty, equality, at least at the surface, in reality, it was just about power and control of the region. And what all of this did was something that President Eisenhower warned about, which was it created an entire industry, right? this industry of war that really took off in the 40s and 50s, where it was no longer just about men

putting boots on the ground and firing off guns, but now you had machines, massive ships, you had air power, you had rockets, you had all of this science backing these killing machines, and that became big business in the form of military contractors, right? You had folks like companies like Northrop and Lockheed and General Dynamics. And you had this sort of blow up of industry surrounding the sort of focusing on the military. And what this did was it created a boom. A boom of, you know, you can imagine in the 50s and in the, you can imagine in the 1950s, you would have many folks working either at the local base, right?

You would have husbands going off and working in, at a military base or working on some military adjacent, military contractor a site and, and, you know, doing, you know, doing work for the military industrial complex through working in private, in private business. And this is sort of the backdrop that Sarah Jane finds herself in Arizona in the 1950s, right? She is at home in the suburbs, raising her children, playing bridge, all of that, while her husband goes off and works for the military. A couple more things for the listener's radar, just to put a blip on the screen that will be picked up really in the next episode,

but throughout our whole historical narrative here, recall that one of the key targets of McCarthyism, right, was Hollywood, was the culture industry, and any left sympathetic person was purged systematically from the upper echelons of Hollywood. Now, for the first time, the Air Force throws open its guarded gates to reveal the amazing story of America's top secret striking force. It's earth-shaking power ready for defense at a moment in history when the world trembles in the shadow of the H-bomb. Every day in sacks a war, Colonel, pressure's on all the time and General Hawks is breathing down your neck. We never know when the other fellow may start something, so we've got to be combat ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Only VistaVision could encompass the vast range of strategic air command.

High as the stratosphere, wide as the world. world, the great story of our times with the stars to match its stature. Jimmy Stewart and June Allison, the team you loved in the Glenn Miller story and the Stratton story. Are you angry with me because I didn't wait for you to send for me? Well, I wasn't a little upset at first. Now that I see you in that night gone, I kind of change my mind. A stream of giant motors sounding an alert to the world as the SAC fights against time to train its crews to a peak of perfection, no flyers,

have ever reached before, to man the bombers that strike faster than any ever flown before. You'll see it all in strategic air command. A story far-ranging and spectacular, yet as close to you as a kiss. You'll stand beside the women who wait in fear, fly beside men who live with danger, as death reaches for them anywhere in the far-flung skies, from Okinawa to Greenland. Now that's going to become a topic of discussion once we're going to, we get to Sarah Jane's third husband in the spouse list for those keeping score at home, but we're going to just put it off to the side for now.

The other thing about McCarthyism, that while I think certainly to folks who are as whigged out noided as your boy's Dick and Don will be well aware of, maybe it's still not as much a part of the zeitgeist writ large that Joe McCarthy's right hand throughout his crusade against communists was none other than Roy Cohn, the gay Jewish fascist who was always whispering in Joe McCarthy's ear who outlived Joe McCarthy and indeed lived long enough to become the Svangali, the political mentor, to none other than President of the United States Donald John Trump. And so the continuity of all that we are presenting here for those of you who might scratch your head and say,

what's this got to do with today? Well, listener, it's got everything to do with today. It's got everything to do with today. And I don't know, Don, maybe we should just point out just really quickly that Nixon was also very much involved in this movement, this McCarthy rampage that was going on at the time. He sure was. And, I mean, the resuscitation of Nixon today by the likes of J.D. Vance and others talked about it in our July 4th episode. that is part and parcel of a turn to repression against left-leaning Americans that is already begun and certainly will be ramping up on the horizon that will make McCarthyism look quaint.

I think that is a Fourth Reich archaeology prediction. It brings us no joy, let's be clear, to report this fact, but unfortunately, Unfortunately, the way the things are going, they are about to be pulling out the big guns to try and maintain their grip on power as their rule becomes more and more irrational and indefensible from any sort of democratic perspective. Okay. So Sarah Jane is now living in the suburbs. Remember, she, you know, she's still having these strange, recurring, you know, fating sickness, and she's married to this guy who's effectively her, you know, has created this doctor-patient relationship before they ever became romantically involved. And that's just our sort of suspicion, right, our inference that we're drawing here.

But I think it's a safe bet. And now we are in 1951. and Sid Jr., their first born son, is born in 1951, and Sarah Jane is just 21 years old. And when Ruth and Olaf visit, they see that Sarah is in way over her head. Remember, Ruth was this over-demanding, overbearing mother who had very high standards and didn't think that Sarah lived up to her standards. You know, the house was never clean enough. The diapers were never done quickly enough and laundry was piled up and wasn't done, all of that stuff. She was shocked at the state of things when she visited.

Right. And, you know, Jerry Spieler tells the story that around this time, instead of getting Sarah Jane the support she needs, right? And we got to give a little empathy here for Sarah Jane. Jane, too, right? She is 21, 22 years old. Her, you know, due respect, but asshole mother is coming into her space and being so counterproductive with all the criticism, with all the browbeating and demeaning comments that, you know, Sarah Jane is not living up to this gold standard of the perfect mother. And obviously, right, Ruth Khan, she raised Sarah Jane Khan in the first place. So glass houses and throwing stones. Yeah, totally. So, you know, with that little hint of empathy

here, we got to observe too that Sid, apparently, was taking on some overseas assignments, perhaps, you know, getting closer to the action in the Strategic Air Command. And of course, this too, like the, it doesn't sit quite perfectly with me that in some reported accounts, we have Sid Manning being described as a psychologist who's like treating patients. And then he's joining the Strategic Air Command. you know there were certainly psychological operations components of the strategic air command and so it could well be that that was his bailiwick in the service there's really as far as i could tell not a great deal of documentation available on his particular role but it is a little bit of a

strange trajectory in his career. Just put it that way. But needless to say, he's not around the house. He's not chipping in to the child rearing duties. So then by 1952, Sarah and Sid's second child, a daughter, Janet, is born. And apparently this is where things start to fall apart, at least according to Jerry. On top of everything, Sarah Jane has yet another baby, a severely disabled baby girl named Melissa, whom Ruthmore places into an institution, and apparently Sarah Jane never sees this baby ever again.

And the couple with these two little babies, with a very strong-willed and big personality Sarah Jane Conn Anderson Manning, she is getting up to her eyeballs, and so she files for divorce for the first time from Sid Manning in 1953. And she makes this filing, interestingly, in West Virginia. And Jerry Speeler certainly doesn't provide, Sarah Jane Moore certainly doesn't provide, the documentary record doesn't provide a rationale. or a description of this move, but I guess we could assume that she moved back with the kids for a period

to her parents in West Virginia, got the divorce filed and, you know, sat it out for a little bit, getting a little bit of help, but it didn't last very long at all because almost immediately the two Sarah Jane and Sydney got back together. They remarried in the state of Ohio in 1955. So like this is about a year and a half after the divorce. And then together they relocate to California.

And that coincides with Sidney Manning's discharge from the Air Force. Dick, you want to say what old Sid got up to after his discharge? Oh, yeah. And I was just going to say I was thinking about it. it's like maybe the Sid Manning guy, he was out there helping the servicemen who dropped those nasty as hell bombs on people. Maybe he was doing some mental hygiene for them, for those servicemen that were suffering from that. The trauma of doing such despicable acts, but this is just me speculating. Okay, so now it is 1955 and Sid has been discharged from the Air Force,

and he returns to his studies and returns to USC for additional graduate coursework. And after that, he goes on to work for Lockheed and North American Aircraft Corporations, also in Southern California. So here we go. This guy who was in the military is now out of the military working for one of the biggest military contractors. at the same time, Sarah is pregnant again. The couple, they're in L.A., the family is in L.A., and Sarah is with child and with her third son, Christopher. Christopher is born in 1955, but either during the pregnancy or immediately after, the couple divorce. They divorce again and for good in 1956.
