Starting point is 00:00:28 This is Free With Ads, the podcast that asks the question, why pay Disney plus 12 bucks a month to see movies based on some favorite childhood IP when you can go online for free and watch a movie based on some favorite childhood IP that actually doesn't suck and won't make you so mad you'll feel flames. Flames on the side of your face. I'm Jordan Morris. And I'm Emily Fleming. Today's movie is Clue, the greatest movie ever based on a board game. until next summer when Timothy Shalame and Sondaya gather wheat for three hours in Settlers of Catan origins. With us, as always, is the super producer, the he freak Matt Lieb, hit in us with those drops that are simply a red herring. Flame, flames, flames on the side of my face.
Starting point is 00:01:19 I should have known. Breathing breath. I should have known that, of course, everyone was going to mention flames before I even got to the drop. Listen, in a movie that's basically wall-to-wall catchphrases, there's different catchphrase every two minutes in this fucking thing. I know. I could have, that's the greatest one. I could have chosen so many and I, flames. Flames. I was there. No, I was standing right there. I know because I was there. Yes. That's one of my favorites. There's so many good lines in this. And I, of course, I went with the most basic one. I'm sorry. No, no, no. No, you went with the correct one.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Hell yeah. Yeah, very excited to talk about Clue. I think was this y'all's first time, right? No. No. Not for me. Emily, this is your first time for Clue. Yes, I've seen clips and everything, but it's like I haven't seen the full thing.
Starting point is 00:02:15 I was, yeah, this was a treat. Nice. This is going to be a fun one. Of course, we are, we mentioned the great line from Madeline Khan, but this is intubute to Tim Curry, who we all. love who passed away and this is this is one of his roles boy howdy is it a good one um cannot wait to talk about clue uh but first we should let you know that this movie mentions suicide so if that's not something you want to hear us talk about we're going to play some music
Starting point is 00:02:43 and give you a chance to find another episode hey we're back it's free with ads we're going to talk about clue which is as of this recording streaming free with ads but first we're going to talk about something else we found for free on the internet this week. Other free stuff. So yeah, a lot of great Tim Curry stuff going around in the wake of his passing. So many good moments. So many fucking great catchphrases.
Starting point is 00:03:23 This man could juice a line like no one else. So funny. And yes, we've talked at length about the place you can go to who escaped capitalism. Space. Size. Of course. But I want to. wanted to find a deep cut that maybe we haven't talked about yet. And I found something on
Starting point is 00:03:45 Reddit that totally blew me away that I had never, that I had never seen before. Something wonderful about Tim Curry and Dolly Parton as well is that they would both just do whatever. These very respected people who everyone loved who had a crusty the clown-like need to put their faces on everything. Sure. Take every role. Did they have money problems? I don't know. I hope not. Who knows? I hope they just loved to work. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:04:14 I think that I don't think either of them did because I, have you seen what Tim Curry's house looked like? No. Go online immediately. One of the most beautiful like celebrity estates I've ever seen. So I know that he wanted to make a lot of money because he's like into horticulture. He had like a whole fucking forest. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:34 It was amazing. He needed to afford a giant compound. A jungle. Yeah. And sometimes you've got to take a little command and conquer CD-ROM money if you want a compound. I bet Nick Cage, which is he did that because his house just sank into the ocean. It happens to the best of us. Poor guy.
Starting point is 00:04:55 It belongs on the land. The seas. Not the seas. I got to film ten more movies this month. I can do it. He can do it. So this is something I had kind of. forgotten about. There was a Saturday morning cartoon when we were kids called, I think, called Peter Pan and the Pirates.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Yes, I would wake up early to watch this before school. So Tim Curry was Captain Hook in this. I didn't know that. Yeah, he played Captain Hook. And this is a clip from Reddit of him just being 10 out of 10 great in this cheap ass Saturday morning cartoon. A little context. This is Peter Pan. He has Captain Hook tied up and he's like shooting him. shooting around him, kind of William Tell style with like this big crossbow thing. So it's kind of Captain Hook taunting Peter Pan when Peter Pan is about to kill him. So yeah, let's hear the clip. I have lived a full life, whereas you are a pathetic creature forever locked in the self-serving ego-centricities of childhood. Wow.
Starting point is 00:06:04 You will never be a youth. And you will never be a man. So, finish me now and be done with it. Wow, dude. Fucking devastating read on Peter Pan. Dude, read him to filth. Read him to filth. You will never be a man.
Starting point is 00:06:24 You will never be a man. That's crazy. That is posted on Reddit by Annihilator 1. So thank you to Anniallateer 1 for that clip. Amazing. I love that you're crediting Reditors. I mean, you found a good one. They'll come for us, man.
Starting point is 00:06:41 Thank you annihilate here. Yeah, good. This is, that is wild. Please. Please don't dox us. It is wild to, I mean, that clip alone, you can, you just the amount of giving it his all that Tim Curry does in his roles is like really something to be studied by anyone who wants to be an actor. And nobody can do it the way he does. Like, I think he just found a very signature.
Starting point is 00:07:08 like a gravitas to his voice that nobody can really replicate, although we're trying every single time. We're on this podcast. But it's something to do with England and government money going to the arts. But like just there's something. The national health, I don't know. Not having to worry about health insurance. I'm not sure what it is.
Starting point is 00:07:31 That's probably. But they get to focus on being a good stage actor. And then for some reason to translate. to screen even cartoon so well. Yeah. Well, yeah, let's let's talk about Klu. It starts out. It's a dark and stormy night. Fucking classic. Tim Curry. He's Wadsworth. He's the butler. Or is he question mark depends on which ending you consider to be canon. Well, I had a question for Matt, actually. As someone who I think knows more about butlers than us, of Downton Abbey.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Downton Abbey. I was like, excuse me. Oh, yeah, he's the richest among the three of us. The only one on the podcast with a butler. I thought maybe Emily was getting at you had been a butler at some point. I mean, listen, we all got to have a lot of side hustles these days. The entertainment industry's in the toilet. It is not easy right now.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Everything's being taken. You can't take AI can't take Butler jobs. That's right. Try and have an AI butler can't do it. They will with the robots, I'm sure. They're going to have to have. one on each floor because those legs are not happening so far. But I'm wondering like, are there still butlers around? Like, do people still buttle? Like it's, I was just thinking about it because I'm like,
Starting point is 00:08:50 yeah, other career can I do? Because I feel like there's, uh, I mean, listen, I'm sure there's still butlers around. I'm sure I just don't have enough like rich, like rich, rich, rich friends or any rich rich rich friends, I guess, uh, where I would go to their house and see a butler. But what, you do have is domestics like people you know uh they don't have british butlers they have uh latin american uh workers uh in their houses but like this is this comes from an era where people i mean the butler thing if you watched out in abbey you can literally see the uh traces of feudalism within it like the the entire staff lived in you know this underground part of the house and they just came They came up to bring the food.
Starting point is 00:09:40 So, yeah, I don't know if there's still butlers. Well, I don't know. The but the butler does say that he buttles. He buttles. But it's like he handles. He like organizes the kitchen staff. That's right. And it was like an honorable position.
Starting point is 00:09:53 Like people, you know, it's like when you go to a fancy restaurant and there's a guy who, who's devoted his life to being a matriety or something. Yes. It's just like this was a career and you learned how to do it and it was honorable. Yeah, I think there was a time where, you know, you could get a living way. for things. Although, you know, who knows how much a butler was paid. I mean, certainly the head butler. Oh, yeah. Well, the head butler, sure. But then you have the valet and then you got the, you know, all the other workers. I mean, you really got to watch Downton Abbey to know all about buttling. So there is an international Butler Academy. Wow. And apparently there's a few million butlers still butling around.
Starting point is 00:10:33 A few million butlers? Yeah. And this is according to Butler's school. cool. I mean, it's a website called Butler. I feel like they're trying to sell you on being a butler. I don't know if there's a few million butlers. I'll be real with you. Yeah, that seems to be an exaggeration.
Starting point is 00:10:48 They're like, don't worry. It's a good job. Oh, they're everywhere. Oh, everyone needs a butler. Yeah, but I guess that it's like there's, now people are called like a house manager or a personal assistant. Yeah, that's true.
Starting point is 00:11:02 Butlers are now just personal assistance for, yeah, and it's usually, you know, for the Nepo baby. be of a screenwriter and you just take care of their dog. To be honest, I would love to have a personal assistant. Oh my God, me too. Do my jewelry shit. Oh my God. Come in and do this podcast for me? Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Talk for me. All you have to do is describe the movie. Tell Matt to play a sting. Yeah, it's really simple. We call those interns because we couldn't pay them. Yeah. Hey, if anybody wants college credit to co-host this podcast. College credit.
Starting point is 00:11:34 I'll write you a good letter of recommendation. We'll just hire you to research but, and then you can do that for it. Listen, just practice explaining the plot of Alien versus Predator. It's super easy. Very easy. Yeah, so, okay. So we got our butler.
Starting point is 00:11:51 He's pulling up to a beautiful mansion. It's New England in 1954. The only other person here already is a sexy French maid. French maid, of course, the hottest combination of nationality and job. Yeah, for sure. And the boobs on, the boobs are starting off strong in this movie. They, okay, the boobs on this woman. Let's talk about it.
Starting point is 00:12:18 Well, there's another woman with Great Rack, too. Yeah, I know. Yeah, this is a boop movie. Yeah, it's a boob movie. Yeah, I mean, listen, die hard as a Christmas movie, tired. Clue is a boob movie, Wired. Yes. That's another Drake meme.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Oh, yeah. He has Drake turning a, away from Die Hard as a Christmas movie. Turning toward Clue is a boob movie. That's right. The boops on the maid. I know movies aren't filmed sequentially. Okay, I know this.
Starting point is 00:12:52 They seem to get bigger as it goes. Don't they seem to be bigger in the later scenes? I was wondering whether or not that was an intentional bit that the movie was doing. Yeah, maybe. Maybe they give her a different bra or a lower cut. Sure. Part of me was like, it is also possible that I'm a disgusting hog. Sure. And I was just like, hi, boobs.
Starting point is 00:13:16 You're still mourning dolly part. I know. I know I got tits on the brain. Yeah, sure. Tits on the glass. Listen, it's been a tough couple months for boob guys. Yeah, exactly. Hopefully nothing happens to Adrian Barbo.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Please protect Adrian Barbeau at all costs. I hope she's not actually dead. I will find out. We'll find out. Still alive. Oh, good. Few. 81.
Starting point is 00:13:44 Good for her. I'm sure the rack still looks amazing. Anyways. So yeah, we got the French made there. We have a cook cooking with a comically giant knife. And then the guests start to arrive. Martin Mull. He's Colonel Mustard.
Starting point is 00:14:02 And Khan, of course, she's Mrs. White. These are all aliases. These are all names from the board game. Yes. So no one's using their real name. Did you all play clue? This is our third board game movie. Oh, shit.
Starting point is 00:14:13 We've done Ouija one, Ouija two. Oh no. Didn't we do, did we do Jumanji? We've never done Jumanji. No, but we will. We're going to just collect all of them. Technically a board game movie or is that a book movie? Jumonti.
Starting point is 00:14:24 Oh, yeah, it's a book movie. That was made into a bad. It's not the same. What's a, what's a set or December board game month? I love you're always trying to think of a month. A month is your first. favorite. Hey, listen, like, get on Reddit. Tell us if you like a theme month. Yeah, tell us. I like it. I like a theme month. It's true. It makes a movies a little easier to pick.
Starting point is 00:14:47 That's true. I don't know. Is there a wingspan movie getting developed? Probably. Yeah, maybe. Probably. There's definitely a battleship movie. I guess Dungeons and Dragons kind of a board game movie. Oh, yeah. That is. Yeah, there we go. Look at that. We've done a candy land movie. Can't believe. There's a candy land cartoon. I'm sure Diablo Cody's done five drafts of a Candyland movie. It just hasn't gotten made. It's like Candyland, but there's abortion in it. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 00:15:18 Yes. Who's a better symbol for toxic masculinity than Lord Liquorish? Yes. We can really look at toxic masculinity through the lens of Lord Liquorice. Lord Liquorish. Is that the bad guy from Candyland? I think that you're right. Who's the big goopy guy?
Starting point is 00:15:33 Is that the big goopy guy? No, no, no. Lord Liquorish. It looks like Jafar. but he's made out of licorice. And then the goopy guy's chocolate, but he looks like a shit stain. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:15:44 Guys. What? In 2005, there was Candyland, the great lollipop adventure. Yeah. There is a Candyland movie. Well,
Starting point is 00:15:52 there's definitely a Candyland TV movie from when I was a kid because that big goopy guy was singing about a sweetheart to one of the Candyland people that he was, I think, in a murder.
Starting point is 00:16:05 And it's just like one of those like childhood memory. where you don't know how you still sort of remember the melody of the song you said something about a sweet heart you know what I'm going to look it up anyways look it up yeah so Candidland
Starting point is 00:16:18 Candy Land the great lollipop adventure of course written by Michael Shabon. Put it on the list yes is this on Plex currently probably is okay so Martin Moll
Starting point is 00:16:35 Cardinal Mustard Miss White She knows the maid So people are kind of You know Noticing each other People maybe seem to have a history With certain people in the house
Starting point is 00:16:47 That'll come into play Christopher Lloyd is Professor Plum Okay so this this movie is just like You forget how everyone is fucking awesome in it Because you know Tim Curry and Madeline Khan That's who people think about When they think about this movie They're so fucking good
Starting point is 00:17:01 But you're like oh Christopher Lloyd is in this And he's awesome We have Miss Peacock, the eccentric Miss Peacock. When Miss Peacock showed up, I was like, who are we going to see next? Colonel Hulu? Oh, Lord. Professor HBO Max? Oh, Lord.
Starting point is 00:17:23 My God. Sergeant Ciso? Oh, my God. The podcast is so good. Oh, it's a good show. Anyway Which the lady who plays Mrs. Peacock
Starting point is 00:17:39 She is from the Pippi Longstocking live action movie. Oh, okay. She's like the orphanage Like she owns the orphanage, whatever. I love her voice. She has this kind of, it's impossible to replicate,
Starting point is 00:17:53 but she's so fucking good. She's very funny. Everybody's funny. Like Madeline Khan is making crazy choices that are so funny. Yeah, no kidding. And like you can't really see them coming.
Starting point is 00:18:05 Like she just does stuff that's really interesting. But I think that, you know, Miss Peacock's solid performance, but nobody holds a candle to Miss Scarlet for me. Yeah, she's great. Damn. And she's the live action Cinderella from the Rogers and Hammerstack. Oh, neat. Oh, cool.
Starting point is 00:18:23 1960s, I think. I was obsessed with her as a little girl, so she is a fucking bombshell in this movie. Oh, my God. So hot. And before we move too far away from Miss Peacock, I should say that she's wearing some little veil with a bunch of feathers. I think this is the worst hat.
Starting point is 00:18:40 For sure. There you go. The worst hat. Yes. And Mr. Green, played by young Michael McKeon. I know. He looks good. He looks fucking awesome.
Starting point is 00:18:51 Yeah, he looks great. I think he's the tallest person in the movie. Tallest guy. And that was just like a positive jump scare for me. I'm like, oh yeah, Michael McKeon's. in this. Yeah, it was just just so fun to watch all these great actors arrive and
Starting point is 00:19:07 act greatly at each other. I think it's my first Michael McKeon movie. I think this is, I saw this before spinal tap. I saw this before anything else that he's done. And it really leaves an impression because he gets the giant punchline at the end of the movie. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:26 Yeah, he gets to say so much great clue shit at the end. And yeah, he's he's fantastic in It's fun to know where these quotes come from because I've heard so many quotes from this movie and then I heard it and I'm like, oh, is that from this? Oh, okay. No, yeah, yeah. Just a real brief update. I was thinking of the Raggedy Ann movie and the song Mr. Greedy or The Greedy. So apologies to all the Candy Land heads out there.
Starting point is 00:19:56 That's my bad. Sorry Candy Land. Sorry to get your hopes up about a. They've already flooded. You've added your DMs with angry, doxing. And uncanceled. And you're canceled, yeah. Your candy canceled.
Starting point is 00:20:08 I am banished from Candy Land. Yeah, there's a chocolate horsehead in my bed. Life size? Who made this? I got sprayed in the eyes with peppermint spray. There we go. Ooh, delicious. Yum.
Starting point is 00:20:29 Shot with gun drops. There we go. gun drops. There's something. Yeah, sure. These are all great. So we're at dinner. You know, everybody's kind of dancing around who they are. We kind of slowly learn that everybody kind of is tied to or works in Washington somehow. So everybody here is like a powerful person or adjacent to a powerful person.
Starting point is 00:20:55 So, you know, we're kind of learning a little bit more about them. Also just like a lot of great lines. They're like discussing literature at one. point and somebody asked Ms. Scarlett, do you like Kipling? And she says, sure, I'll eat anything. Yeah. Great line. They serve something that'll kind of become integral to the plot. We'll learn later that it's monkey brains. It just looks like a pile of gravy. It looks like a plate full of like white sausage gravy. And so yeah, they're all, they all, they all got a mysterious letter. They all got a mysterious letter from Mr. Body. And we kind of meet who, who is,
Starting point is 00:21:32 who he think is Mr. Body. And again, depending on the ending is or is not the actual Mr. Body. Right, right. This is kind of fun. This, this guy seems kind of out of place. He's a, he's a weird presence in this movie with a bunch of, like, theatery actors. He seems like a gaffer or something. It's Lee Bing from the punk band Fear.
Starting point is 00:21:53 Oh. The classic, like, 70s-ass punk band. He's still around. This guy still performs. Yes. And he's fucking 80 and still gets. up there and yells. Only like hardcore punk band to ever do a set on Saturday Night Live, I believe.
Starting point is 00:22:08 Yeah, I think they were John Belushi's favorite band or something. John Belushi brought them in and he's in the footage. You see him actually moshing and stuff. That's really interesting because we have someone from the go-goes, which I think people consider the go-goes. They were a punk band and then they kind of went more pop. Sure. So I wonder whoever made this movie must have been like a punk fan or something else.
Starting point is 00:22:30 Yeah, I know that like John Landers. just co-wrote this movie and has some kind of like punk scene ties for sure. So yeah. Oh yeah. Man, this is a fun deep dive. If you can like find, I mean, I think all go-go's music is great, even the pop stuff, but like you can find footage of the go-goes playing like the troubadour in 1975 and are just a hardcore band. They're fucking great. It's really, really fun. Tight. Do it if you get a chance. Okay. So yeah, so Mr. Body is there. All the doors are locked. And we find that everybody is being, everybody's being blackmailed. Everybody has some sort of secret that Mr. Body knows.
Starting point is 00:23:10 Christopher Lloyd slept with one of his patients. Miss Scarlett is a madam. She is a madam who distributes prostitutes prostitutes. Yeah, you're saying that clinically enough. Thank you, yes. She delivers prostitutes. She is a sex work concierge. There you are.
Starting point is 00:23:32 Ooh, a sex work butler. There you go. A butler for sex work. Yes. There you are. And then, so yeah. So, and we learned that Colonel Mustard has been like visiting these prostitutes. We learned that Mrs. White is kind of like a black widow.
Starting point is 00:23:49 She has all these husbands who keep dying. So everybody's got these secrets. And Michael McKeon's the one he says, what he says is his secret. He's actually, he's gay and he's like trying to keep it, you know, kind of trying to stay in the closet so he doesn't lose his job. Lose his job here in, in 1954. So, yeah, so they're all getting blackmail, and they all get a little gift.
Starting point is 00:24:12 They all get a little black wrapped present with one of the classic clue murder weapons in it. So what do we got? We got the pipe, we got the wrench, we got the noose, we got the gun. Candlestick. Candlestick. And the rope.
Starting point is 00:24:28 And the rope. Yeah. Wonderful. Wonderful. one is much more effective than the other ones. Yeah. The gun is like... The gun really is the best of all the weapons.
Starting point is 00:24:40 Like all these other weapons, the trauma involved in just trying to murder someone with a wrench. God, yeah. You know, I'm just like, you really got to already be a psychopath in order to, you know, use the right. A candlestick is kind of elegant. I could do the candlestick for sure. Yeah, I guess if you...
Starting point is 00:24:58 But how many times do you have to hit some? Oh, a lot. This movie, people just get bogged once and they die immediately. No, the soft spot in the back of the head. You can get them. Okay. Unless you're thinking about this. You're ready to murder someone with a candle's thing.
Starting point is 00:25:13 No, no, I think, because, okay, I have weapons in every part of my apartment. Like, I have a tiny apartment. No, yeah, you got it. I have a comb knife in my bathroom. Okay. And it's a, well, it's a comb and you can open it up. Emily, with the comb knife in the bathroom. That's right.
Starting point is 00:25:30 Yeah. I love the idea. of doing clue but in a studio apartment where it's like well it's only about a couple rooms that's going to take in place. You're fighting each other at like arms length just kind of. And it's like yeah, all the lights went off but I could still see because of the glowing Arby's sign next door. So I could kind of see.
Starting point is 00:25:51 I live next to a 24 hour laundromat. There we go. It's always light. Yeah, maybe a little light pollution coming off that thing. for sure anyway so yeah so that that happens all the lights go off we hear the gunshot we hear some screams mr body dead on the ground but no gunshot wound so so what happens uh we learn later that tim curry wadsworth he's in on this too he was trying to get revenge on mr body because he was blackmailing tim curry's wife who ended up killing herself because of the blackmail
Starting point is 00:26:30 Oh, but she was a, she was like, so it's 1954, so she was in line with socialists. So she was like, there's a little red scare thing going on here. So she was getting blackmailed because of her, her being in line with socialists. It's a really, it's a, it's a really funny scene because, you know, everyone has admitted one fault or another, you know, that they're being blackmailed for. And then he, like, takes a breath and he says, she was a socialist. and everyone is silent and you hear, oh, my God. As if that's worse than, you know, flandering or worse than killing all of your husbands. Very funny.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Just knowing socialists. Yes, yes. Friends with socialists. Right. So we learned that someone has called the cops and they have like 30 minutes to solve the crime. Just a great little like, why do they have to solve the crime? they have to, they're like, oh, we have to solve it before the cops get here or else else we'll all get arrested. So just like really fun little screenwriting choices in this and like trying to make it as much like the game as possible.
Starting point is 00:27:39 And I guess they've all just decided that none of them could be the murderer, which is why they all split up going and looking for somebody. Well, they're all afraid. They're all afraid to split up because they don't know if the other one is a murderer. So they take extra, you know, precaution to try and make sure that, you know, they're not getting murdered. Really, it is just a, they use the split up method in order to have separate scenes in which people bumble into each other in a funny way. I guess I was like, what are they looking for? It's one of them. Right. Well, you never know.
Starting point is 00:28:15 But, yeah, I get it. So everybody's split up. There's, yeah, there's just so many good little, like, underplayed physical. comedy moments in this movie, like just people trying to go through a door together and getting stuck. Because they're too afraid to, like, be in front or behind to each other. That was great, yes.
Starting point is 00:28:33 And Madeline Con just kind of like trips on the stairs a little bit and it's hilarious. Yeah, I don't know. And like, you think about like the Adam Sandler version of this movie that they could have made, where it's people getting it in the crotch and going like, do. Oh, no, I stepped in a poop.
Starting point is 00:28:50 Oh, no. Oh, somebody did step in a poop. the beginning of the movie though. Is there a poop? There's a poop thing where Tim Curry has stepped into dog shit before he walks in. There is that thing. And everybody's like smelling it. It's smelling it.
Starting point is 00:29:04 I was waiting for that to mean something because I was just there. Yeah. Yeah, but they'd have done it hamfisted if it was a Sandler comedy. Yeah, they did it elegantly. Yes, that's very true. You know? Yeah, I know. Everything is kind of like underplayed in this movie in a really, really funny way.
Starting point is 00:29:22 And I think something I just kind of noticed about it is just that like everyone's kind of high status in this movie. Like everyone's classy or they're trying to be classy at least. So them falling and kind of bumbling around is, I don't know, has this little extra thing because they have so much dignity. And everyone's like very well dressed. So it's, I don't know. Yeah, it's just a great little, yeah, great little choices in this movie about like, you know, how the comedy comes out. I really like it. And it's still fucking hilarious.
Starting point is 00:29:52 So kind of while the split up is happening, we get all these other like additional murders. Like a guy whose car broke down shows up. They lock him in a room and then lock all the weapons away. And then a cop shows up to check on the guy whose car broke down. They lock him in a different room. And then the singing telegram woman shows up and gets shot. Yeah, she's from the go-goes. And this is that scene.
Starting point is 00:30:22 Just one of the greatest comic Like timing on the gunshot ever It's like that stuck with me since I was a kid Would go on this woman right The same one this one going to play Joan of Arkinville and Ted right Oh yeah Look at that That's amazing
Starting point is 00:30:46 She's I completely forgot about Truly a full career for the go-go's lady Yeah Hell yeah Even if she wasn't in the go-go's Playing the singing telegram woman in this and the Joan of Arc and Bill and Ted
Starting point is 00:30:59 Pretty solid. That's fucking enough. Yeah, she was also in Star Trek 4, The Voyage Home, played Alien Officer Trilia. Look at that. She must be cool to hang out with. That's the reason why you get people into your movies that aren't actors.
Starting point is 00:31:15 Just be like, I want to chill with this show. Yeah, exactly. I know. This had to have been either the most fun set or a fucking nightmare. It's one of the two. This is either the funest things. these people ever did or oh my god get me out of here everybody here is such a weird perfectionist
Starting point is 00:31:32 i don't know it's one of the two you never know um so so we have like we have six people getting murdered oh yes and then the the french maid of that she gets it so she goes into a room and we see these kind of gloved hands like taking the evidence and burning it and then like taking the weapons back out of the closet um if that says in an american accent um oh it's you and then she gets it's noosed to death. Yeah. They don't give us, if you're hoping for a reveal
Starting point is 00:32:02 on why she now speaks with an American accent, there's nothing there. No, in none of the three endings. Yeah. Does it explain that? Yes. Nor the dog shit that, you know,
Starting point is 00:32:13 Tim Curry steps in. It's just a lot of... Just fun little things. Spice. Fun little red, yeah, red herrings. Red herrings. Red herrings.
Starting point is 00:32:21 Yes, there you go. So, yeah. So now we have, so we have six murders and then Tim Curry says, this is getting serious. Great. So, yeah, actually,
Starting point is 00:32:33 we're about to get into the, like, solution part of this movie, which, like, as fun as this movie is, the fucking solution stuff is, it's, it's the great magic trick of this movie. It's so awesome. Let's take a little break,
Starting point is 00:32:47 and then we'll talk about it when we come back. Hi, everybody. It's your friends from Free With Ads. Ooh, it's us. Yeah. We're going to be. We're going to get back to our discussion about the movie, but first, we want to bring you a very special message from one of our listeners.
Starting point is 00:33:16 We're bringing you this message because that listener has purchased a jumbotron. They've gone to maximumfund.org slash jumbotron. Here's what you do. You throw a little bit of money our way, and then we share any message at all with our listenership. We can plug your podcasts. We could plug your band. As long as you don't ask us to plug your book. butt.
Starting point is 00:33:38 Yeah. We won't do that unless you marry us. Unless you marry us. That's for spouses only. That's right. Spousal privilege. To plug your butt, you have to marry us. But we'll plug your Kickstarter, your Etsy store, maximum fun.
Starting point is 00:33:54 dot org slash jumbotron. It's a great way to support the show. But of course, the best way to support the show is by going to maximum fun. org slash join. Hey, we're going to read this listener message. and by we, I mean, Emily's going to read it and one of her patented chameleon-like accents.
Starting point is 00:34:15 So Emily, would you please choose an accent and read this message from Nick? Okay, I'm going to try to do Tim Curry from that CD-ROM game. Oh, sure. So like Russian military commander. I love this.
Starting point is 00:34:34 Great choice. Yep. Well, I've gone great already. Thank you. I fucked up. And on the first of September, I was test now it's French. That was French. Shit.
Starting point is 00:34:50 Okay. Lean in. I'm back on track. Now I'm just going to have to do fucking French. You know, let it, let it breathe. I'm going to let it be what it wants to be. On first of September, I was telling my friends how I was going to Cape and CowellCon. on 30th of August to get Jordan to sign my copy of Bobble for the first time.
Starting point is 00:35:15 I forgot how calendars and linear time work, so I was unable to buy one of everything at Jordan's booth. So I'm spending that money on a jump-o-traw. Sorry. No, it's going great. Okay. I've got spare characters, so here's a question. What teacher did you accidentally call mom one time?
Starting point is 00:35:41 And when did you live down the shame? Do you want to just throw in a space in there? Yeah. A space? Say spice. Spice. There we go. Very good.
Starting point is 00:35:55 Very good. Okay. So this is a nice jumpotron from a listener who wants to support us. That's not necessarily functional. I know Nick. Nick is nice enough to come out to various comics events. I do, and he always brings the same copy of bubble, and I sign it for him every time. Oh, it's his fifth time. This is the fifth, I see. He signed it. Wow. It would be the fifth time that I've signed the same book. Good for him. I love that. That's nice of you. We do. But I guess we should answer this question. Did you guys have a teacher you accidentally called mom? I mean, for sure, for sure it happened. But I, you know, it's like one of those memories you bury. So I don't know which teacher, but actually I think it was Ms. Hunter. I don't mean Ms. Hunter.
Starting point is 00:36:41 Maybe Ms. Christian for me. I had, I didn't call a teacher mom, but I did try to sit in one of my preschool teachers' laps. And she said she didn't have a lap. Oh. I like that's a good, that's a good way to get kids to fuck off. I was so confused by that. So I guess it's intimate for a child to sit in a lap. lap so she didn't want me to sit there so she did not have one didn't have a lap um well thank you to nick
Starting point is 00:37:14 and uh thanks in advance to anybody who goes to maximum fun dot org slash jumbo tron to get a jumbo tron for themselves okay back to the movie hey we're back it's free with ads we're talking about clue um so we've we have we have we have the clues we have the clues the clues the clues the clues Mr. Police, he gave them all to us. Always got to bring up the goddamn snowman. It was a great meme. Mims didn't get any better than that snowman who said Mr. Police. Mr. Police, I gave you all the clues.
Starting point is 00:37:58 We love you, Snowman. Come back to us. Yeah, come back. Give us more clues. Yeah, we need to make another. I never saw that movie. Neither did I. I just know the meme.
Starting point is 00:38:09 Yeah. Anyway, maybe we would be getting more memes if people would have gone to see the movie. I know. It's unfortunately. Well, hindsight's 2020. Whatever. So, okay, so we have all the clues and we're about to start getting the solutions.
Starting point is 00:38:26 So Tim Curry says he has it figured out and kind of runs through the house explaining how everything happened. Will I be able to explain it? No. No. Don't need to. Not the point. Not the point. It's happening.
Starting point is 00:38:42 And he's so everybody is so great in this, but like what a just a virtuoso performance. It's, it's really amazing. And it's also a giant, you know, long conceptual bit in that he's just replaying the movie. And he is, you know, telling everyone what's happening while they all watch in like raptured excitement just going like, yeah. Like it's very funny to spend 15 minutes of your movie having one character explain how everything went. it down and everyone just going, that's awesome. It's really great. In fact, Mrs. Scarlett at one point in the third ending, when he is like pointing out
Starting point is 00:39:22 who killed who and what happened, she is just like, she's just been called out for doing murder. And she's like, yes. She's like, she's happy about it because she's so impressed. She's impressed by it, which is such a funny way of doing it. Is she the one who goes, this is incredible? Like, I'm like,
Starting point is 00:39:41 who are you in Perry Mason? Yeah. I know, as the audience is impressed with Tim Curry, the characters in the movie are also impressed with him. It's such a funny choice.
Starting point is 00:39:53 Yeah. And yeah, and this part is so, so great. So yeah, so we learned that kind of everyone is linked and all the people
Starting point is 00:40:01 who have kind of, all the randos that have come in are kind of like accomplices and their links to the people. The guy with the car who broke down, he was Colonel Muster's driver,
Starting point is 00:40:10 the singing telegram woman was the patient that Professor Plum was sleeping with. So, yeah, and they've all kind of been gathering this blackmail evidence, and they've been in line with Mr. Body. At one point, someone says, there's one thing I don't understand, and then someone else will chime in with one thing. Yeah. And it kind of reminds me of that bit from Death Becomes Her, and now a warning. Now a warning? Yeah. The other recurring bit that happens throughout is, you know, to make a long story short, too late, that just happens throughout the entire time.
Starting point is 00:40:46 Oh, that's so good. I know. That's every time that happens. Yeah. Just great. So yeah. So there's three different solutions. One solution is Miss Scarlet did it.
Starting point is 00:40:59 Yeah. The other solution is Miss Peacock did it. Yeah. And then the last solution. I'm not going to call it the final. solution. That's a Nazi thing. The final solution. The third solution is that they all did it. So everybody is responsible for killing one person. And then in that particular solution, Tim Curry is Mr. Body. He's the mastermind. Right. And Mr. Body was the butler. So Wadsworth was the one you thought was
Starting point is 00:41:32 Mr. Body and Mr. Body is Wadsworth. This would have been very easy for me to look up. I didn't fucking do it. I feel like the urban legend about this was that depending on where you saw the movie in America, you got one of these endings.
Starting point is 00:41:48 And then when they started showing it on TV, you got to see all three. I don't know if that's real. I'd always heard that about the clue. But that was when I told people, we were watching this for the podcast, they were like, is it the one with all the endings? And I'm like, what do you mean? Like, I'd just I figured it was that was part of it.
Starting point is 00:42:04 You just watched all of the endings. But I don't know. I think that is an urban legend that we could look up. There's also, I'm looking it up right now. There's also an unreleased fourth ending. Yeah, I've heard that too. I've heard that it still exists somewhere. And that there's somebody who won't show it for some reason.
Starting point is 00:42:24 Anyway, but yeah. Incredible. Yeah, so very cool. This is why we need an intern. This is exactly. Yes. listen, if you're out there and you need college credit, we will write you a wonderful letter of recommendation.
Starting point is 00:42:37 Just a really great letter. Let us know which movie rumors are true. That's right. Yes, okay. So in the last ending where Tim Curry is the mastermind, Michael McKeon pulls out a gun and shoots him. Turns out he was in the FBI and was kind of like a plant here. the the like if you think too hard about this one your brain totally breaks because it's like
Starting point is 00:43:06 yeah yeah yeah how did he get planted in this did he just masquerade as a closeted gay guy so anyway right yeah there's like and how would he get black he'd have to masquerade as a closeted gay guy for a while in order to get blackmailed it's best not to think about this movie in terms of actual like as a murder mystery and more as just a Just a comedy of people having fun. Yeah, isn't this cool. I know it's like all of these kind of break down if you think about them for more than five minutes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:43:39 Again, not the point. Best not to. Best not to. But yeah. So he shoots, yeah, he shoots Tim Curry and then kind of all the FBI storms in. And then he gets to say the final clue line that you're kind of waiting for. It was Mr. Green in the hall with the revolver. and then he says,
Starting point is 00:43:59 this great punchline, now I'm going to go home and sleep with my wife. Roll credits. Yeah. And then if you watch the credits after the credits, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:44:12 I had never done this before. I watched the credits for the first time. After the credits, you get a little bit of text. Colonel Mustard will return in Avengers Doomsday. I don't know why, I don't know why I believe you
Starting point is 00:44:25 when you start a sentence. Yeah. Every fucking Every sentence I'm just like Oh, I missed something And then you're going to fuck with me A dog is still alive
Starting point is 00:44:36 A dog is still alive Tim Curry is still alive Dog will return In Avengers Doomsday So dumb So we're gonna tell you What we thought about Klu
Starting point is 00:44:49 But first We gotta do the hunk watch It's hunk watch Yeah I mean, I think, you know, an honorary, an honorary hunk watch goes to Tim Curry, of course, for being one of the fucking greatest to ever do it. Sure. Sure, sure. In classic films, but also CD-ROM games, G-Bats, Saturday morning cartoons, whatever he did.
Starting point is 00:45:16 Whatever he did. Muppet Treasure Island. I mean, this dude. Muppet Treasure Island. This guy is a hunk of many talents. Yeah. You know? He will be missed.
Starting point is 00:45:30 Well, he's my hunk, honestly. Of course, yes. He's like boyish in this movie. I know. He's so young. And his hair is like light brown. It's not like, and I just was like, oh, he's so handsome. And I don't know.
Starting point is 00:45:44 He was very dreamy to me in this movie. So he is my hunk. I think this is, I have a huge crush on him in this movie. Of course, Frank Inverter is going to be the sexiest, like. Yeah, sure. One of the sexiest characters. of all time, like for me, but he's so boyish and handsome in this movie. I was very into it. So he's my hunk. Yeah, it's so fun to see him play buttoned up this close to Rocky Horror,
Starting point is 00:46:09 you know, which was so over the top in camping. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But he's just this, yeah, I mean, you know, I think it's easy to talk about him as being one note, you know, of him just kind of doing this thing. But not really. Like, yeah, he did Frankenfur, which was this crazy, like over sex character and then this more like button down kind of uptight guy anyway fucking great at all of it yeah what are y'all's um young michael mckeon yeah god good god he looks he's handsome he's very handsome yeah um i am gonna go with medlin con she is just uh you know she's just amazing and this she has so many uh small not even lines but no that she makes throughout this movie.
Starting point is 00:46:57 At one point she does like a, ah, she like screams. She does a mock scream after, like during one of Tim Curry's explanations. I forget which ending it is. And it's just so funny because you can tell she's just, like I believe the movie is entirely scripted actually,
Starting point is 00:47:17 except for the flames, flames on the side of my face scene. That is the one part of the movie. where Madeline told the director, I just want to improv something here. And he said that he's like, fine, but afterwards you have to do the line as written. And after that, you know, scene in which she did the ad-lib flames
Starting point is 00:47:39 on the side of my face thing, he was like, well, never mind, we got it. So she is the hunk of the movie, in my opinion. For sure. Best of the best. No kidding. All right. When we come back, we're going to tell you what we thought of Clue. Overall, but first, you got to listen to this.
Starting point is 00:48:19 Hey, we're back. It's free with ads. We're going to tell you what we thought about Clue, but first, we want to encourage you to go to maximum fun.org slash join. Starting point is 00:48:45 and picking a show this month. It's my pick. What am I going to pick? Well, you got to go When are you going to tell us? I'm so exciting. I know I haven't figured it out yet. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:49:00 I just remembered. I had to do it. I had forgotten. Yeah, we've been having a lot of fun on this series. The most recent episode, Matt picked the outsider for us to watch, a really creepy Stephen King, HBO show.
Starting point is 00:49:19 Emily picked Yellowstone last month, so we all got to watch the pilot of Yellowstone, tons of fun. Yeah, and we've got a bunch of stuff up there, maximum fun.org slash join, and you get everybody's bonus episode too. So every show on the network, you get to hear that bonus stuff and have yourself a great time. Okay, let's say what we thought about Clue. Emily, you can take it home as the clue first timer. Okay.
Starting point is 00:49:45 I will start it off. Yeah, I'm going to give it an eight. I love this movie. It's so funny. Funny now. It's, yeah, it's so rewatchable. I mean, I think the first time I saw it was at a like drama club cast party in high school. And yeah, I've seen it a million times since.
Starting point is 00:50:00 Always hilarious. And yeah, you find something new in it every time. Just like there's the big quotable lines, but also just like weird little moments. You know, Madeline Khan making noises. is somebody getting stuck in a doorway in the background. It's so good. And yeah, everybody's just like giving such a wonderful comedy performance. And yeah, I think if you love Tim Curry and you haven't seen this, run, don't walk.
Starting point is 00:50:25 It's, yeah, it's comedy classic. Matt, what do you think? I'm going to give it an eight as well. This is one of those movies for me that was sort of formative. So, like, I used to watch this as, like, not just on TV, but like this was a rental, like a blockbuster rental. I've seen it more times than I can count because it was that that age where you just rewatched the same movie over and over again. So, yeah, it's hard to even reexamine the movie for me because I just, every moment is seared into my brain. So I just love it.
Starting point is 00:51:01 The nice, nice heart eight. Emily, we're dying to hear what you thought of clue, your first time seeing it. What do you give in it? I loved this movie. I'm giving it a tippy tin. Nice. Oh, sure. Good call.
Starting point is 00:51:17 What a cozy movie, too. Like, yeah, I think of, you know, some people, I mean, we talked about
Starting point is 00:51:23 die hard as Christmas movie. Fuck that. I think of this movie as a Thanksgiving season, like movie. This is a nice, the rich, like,
Starting point is 00:51:32 wood in the building, the kind of storminess of it and everybody's dressed up for a dinner type thing. Like, I think I'm going to present. present this to the Fleming family as our Thanksgiving movie to watch after we watch the dog show. There's a dog show on Thanksgiving. Oh, yeah. The Westminster Dog Show. I don't know if it's
Starting point is 00:51:53 Westminster or if it's like the Kennel Club or whatever, but it happens on Thanksgiving Day after the parades. So it'll be parades, dog show, clue. I thought you were talking about the Christopher guest movie Bestin Show and I'm like, well, you do a Michael McKeon Thanksgiving. That's very, very, very, Very true, which I think of Best's show as a, that's a Thanksgiving movie too. It just feels right for Thanksgiving. Yeah, I know. Yeah. And yeah, everybody can enjoy Best in Show.
Starting point is 00:52:21 That's right. All right. That is what we thought about Clue. Let's do a little plug-in. Anybody got anything? Emily? Same all, same all. I've got my show coming out soon.
