Starting point is 00:00:28 This is free with ads, the podcast that asked the question, why pay Disney Plus 12 bucks a month for a bunch of nostalgic favorites when you can go online for free and watch a nostalgic favorite that will make you constantly say, oh, wow, that person. Oh, wait, they're MAGA now, aren't they? Oh, man. Oh, dang it. I'm Jordan Morris.
Starting point is 00:00:50 And I'm Emily Fleming. Today's movie is Clueless, the 90s comedy classic. That's probably the reason our generation watches so much steps sibling porn. With us as always is the super producer, the he freak Matt Lieb, hitting us with those drops in America. It's like a totally important designer.
Starting point is 00:01:09 And I will totally shoot you in the head. What's all right? You're ready to get shot in the head. Oh yeah. So that designer is Eliya and I immediately went on eBay to look up Eliya dresses because I was like, it's an important designer. I must have one.
Starting point is 00:01:26 It's a very important designer. What's an Eliah? what's an Eliya going for on eBay these days? Like $1,700. Okay. Jesus Christ, still very important. Maximumfund.org slash join, everybody. Help us afford a dress from the 90s.
Starting point is 00:01:41 We all want to wear a liar. We must. Well, yes, very excited to talk about Clueless with y'all. I think this one's been on the two watch list for a while. But first, we're going to talk about something else we saw for free on the internet. week. Other free stuff? Today's free thing.
Starting point is 00:02:03 It's from the LA Times. It is an article by Maddie Connors. The headline of the article is, one of LA's hottest creative writing scenes is unfolding at Jumbo's Clown Room, question mark. No. So this is about, okay. So maybe before we talk about the article,
Starting point is 00:02:25 we'll have Emily explained, Jumbo's clown room to the audience who might not be L.A. locals. Okay. Well, it's in my neighborhood. I love Jumbo so much. It is like a, it's kind of poised like a strip club, but they don't get nude. It's more of erotic dancing with a pole, but it's more like go-go dancing kind of thing. And it's very like rock, goth metal kind of themed and punk kind of theme. So the girls are like really cool. and they have fun outfits and tattoos. And a lot of celebrities go there. I see like famous people in the front row all the time. It's a tiny little bar too, but I fucking love it there. And I end up spending at least $200 every time I go.
Starting point is 00:03:12 God damn. I know. I can't help it. When it's ones, it feels like it doesn't count. It's like diet money. Maximumfund.org. Help us. The Eliadress.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Help more jumbos. Listen, we're tipping hardworking sex workers. Always. Did I explain that well enough? No, you did. That's a great explanation. It's such a fun, wild, only in L.A. kind of spot. You've got to take people who, like when people visit, that's usually I will take them there.
Starting point is 00:03:44 And then there's a really good little Thai restaurant right next door that I love. Oh, which one? It's called Crank Ted's. Oh, I don't know that one. They have really good chicken wings. There's things can't confirm. There is one. nearby, it starts with a J.
Starting point is 00:04:01 It's like the famous Jitlada. Jitlada. Yeah. I went there. Wait, wait, wait. It's nearby you? No, it's nearby in that neck of the woods. It's nearby you. Yeah. Yeah. It's very nearby me. And that place will make you shitlotta your pants.
Starting point is 00:04:15 Yeah, yeah, yeah. It'll make you shitlotta. It's so spicy. You can't tell you cannot tell them medium at Jitlada. It just has to be like, what's the lowest? I'm white. the lowest. Yes. I did the medium because I thought I do spicy food all the time. No big deal. Same here. Different. Different. Different ballgame. My mouth felt insane on fire for hours afterwards. It's a special place. I went there and I saw um, what's his, Oliver Stone. No. Surrounded by a bunch of young women and he was just talking at them about politics. And I was like, what a life. What a life this guy gets to lead. He's interviewing Putin one day.
Starting point is 00:05:01 He's eating jitlotta with a bunch of 18-year-olds the next. I don't want to know anyone in Hollywood. And it's in just like a shitty little strip mall next to like a smoke shop. That's right. And, God, my neighborhood is crazy. I love my neighborhood so much. It's great. But yeah, I love Jumbo's.
Starting point is 00:05:17 I am so confused. People have been sending me this article all day, Jordan. Oh, funny. That's great. I love that. I've been trying to pitch something to the owner of Jumbos for quite some time. And I'm hoping that this is an event that I could go to and maybe finally get in there. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:05:38 What the article is about is about like kind of the writing history of Jumbo. So I guess like they say that David Lynch wrote there. Like he went there to write and there's like a scene in blue velvet that like he got. got the idea from at Jumbos. What? Yeah. And so kind of it's really interesting. So I guess a lot of the dancers also have writing projects.
Starting point is 00:06:04 Some of them are like playwrights. I guess the guy, according to this article, the guy who works the door is an award-winning playwright and is like the head of a theater festival in L.A. And I'm like, that is so cool. Also, God, how bad is the entertainment economy? I was just going to say, I was like, this is not a happy story. This is a story about how you cannot make a living in Hollywood. it anymore.
Starting point is 00:06:25 No, you can't. You can be an award-winning playwright, but you also have to work the door at the strip. That sucks, dude. At a strip club where people don't even strip. Yeah, you don't even get to see tities. You only get to see, you know, clowns. Most of a, most of a butt. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:40 The best you can do is get real close to think you're going to see tities, but then the flower squirts at you. Yeah. I don't think I've ever seen a clown-themed stripper there, though. Me neither. I think it's just called that. No, it's too bad. It is too bad.
Starting point is 00:06:56 There's usually, there's some theme dancers, though. There was a magician one time. Okay. That's close. She had somebody pick a card, and then she did a card trick, and then they pulled the card out of her bra. And it was the right card. And I was like, wow, that was pretty cool. Yeah, that's cool.
Starting point is 00:07:14 And I have a boner. Yes, exactly. Best of all worlds. The prestige. Yeah, yeah. But I guess. I guess, you know, for as long as this place has existed, like screenwriters have been coming in and like saying to the dancers, like, oh, I'm writing something about, you know, a dancer or a sex worker. Can I, like, interview you? And now their attitude is like, bitch, I'll write it, you know. So, which is kind of cool. But also I just, I just wanted to circle back to the thing of like, could you write in there? The level of concentration you would have to have to. The folk? I know. Thank you. Enjoy the tints.
Starting point is 00:07:57 You have to be tipping. Like you're supposed to be, if you're in a strip club or an erotic, like exotic dancer establishment, you are supposed to be paying attention and being respectful to the dancers. It's not a regular bar. It is kind of strange to write in there. Especially since you can't even explain that to your spouse. Like how am I supposed to explain to myself? No, it's actually I get a lot of good writing done at the strip club for clown. Listen, I don't get anything done at the we work. Yeah, exactly. We work isn't we working out for me. And you can't have your phone out, like really. I mean, you can, but if you film anything, they will, they're going to fuck you up. How am I supposed to pretend to be writing if I can't look at my phone instead?
Starting point is 00:08:39 I mean, it could have been just like David Lynch had an old-timey typewriter. Yeah, 100% thing. Right now, ladies, I'm trying to finish this third act. He had a notebook and he was the only guy allowed to smoke in there, but I bet that they allowed people to smoke in there back when he was like writing stuff. I bet it was a smoking bar back. Oh, sure. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:57 Those are the days. You know, when Hollywood was cool, when you could OD in the Viper room and everyone liked. Oh, fuck off. Oh, man. Those were the days. Can I tell you guys what I was, I'm going to pitch them? Oh, yeah, sure. Now that they've got this article out, they probably have tons of people and I'm not going to get to do it.
Starting point is 00:09:15 I've always kind of thought there was a lull and it's kind of like, I don't like that they have to crawl around for their singles after they dance. Okay. And like pick them up. I've always found that to be like awkward. They're kind of like looking at you and like, and it just feels like they shouldn't have to do that. So I was like,
Starting point is 00:09:35 what if I had this character that had like a Zamboni power wheels type thing? Great idea. This is such a good idea. And I could be a host that introduces the next dancer and like says give it up for whatever. And so I found a power wheels. on Facebook Marcus likes.
Starting point is 00:09:53 You started with the power wheels. I like this. I have to get the wig. That's going to be their first question is can you provide your own power wheels? Yeah, exactly. Yes, and I'm going to get a... We're not going to buy one for you.
Starting point is 00:10:03 We're not going to give you a company car. And I kind of want to attach, I'll attach a broom to the front of it, like one of those big long brooms. And then I'd paint the power wheels so it says jumbos and everything. But I have this character that I want to be this undead
Starting point is 00:10:20 actress that has lived here since the golden age of Hollywood and she won't die until she gets her big break. Okay. And she also has a power wheels. Well, yeah, I'm gonna paint it so it looks kind of like a Rolls-Roycey type thing.
Starting point is 00:10:33 It'll be a black car. But I have this like mossy kind of dusty green wig that looks like it's, you know, it's been rotting and stuff. So she's gonna look like she's kind of been rotting for a while. But, and have a transatlantic accent, you know?
Starting point is 00:10:50 I love it. I don't have a name for her yet, but I just feel like, wouldn't that be nice to, they don't have to crawl around? And I'll be real with you. Like, character aside, inventing something to help strippers to pick up the money so they don't have to like debase themselves by picking it up. Because I agree with you completely. There's something like the act of having to pick up all of the dollars that's just like they already did all this work. Why do you make it? And they turn the music off too.
Starting point is 00:11:18 So it's like quiet. It's the most awkward part. And it feels like also wouldn't you like to have... So you're right here from out of town? Exactly. But then I can like get up there and kind of go, I noticed you over there, you're really like stiff and I'm out there. You're only put one dollar a bit like bully people into like throwing more dollars out the next time and then doing kind of old Hollywood like stories and stuff. And then introduce the next dancer.
Starting point is 00:11:45 This is a good pitch. Thank you. Jumbos doesn't go for it. Hopefully they're... Cheetahs. Does anyone know anyone at cheetahs? If anyone knows anyone at either of those establishments Get me in, let me know,
Starting point is 00:11:59 because they are a cool, cool place. It feels like it might be tough to get an idea like that in there. All right. That was the thing where we talk about something else we saw on the internet. Now let's talk about the movie we watched on the internet. It's clueless. We've all seen it, right? Yeah, definitely.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Of course. In theaters? Formative movie. Saw it in theaters. I was not allowed to. Oh. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I saw it both in theaters and then we got the VHS of it and watched it over and over and over again. This was very formative for.
Starting point is 00:12:35 Yeah, what year was this? 95, I believe. Am I wrong? I think you're right. Clueless? I was nine. They weren't letting me. I was 10.
Starting point is 00:12:46 So they let me. And you're a boy. I feel like parents don't. kind of shield. Like, I think when you're a girl and there's something about, oh, these girls might be having sex or kissing. It's like, I mean, Jordan's mom wouldn't let him watch Peewee's Playhouse, which still stumps me to this day.
Starting point is 00:13:02 No, I get that. Yeah. I think she told us it was because he was too weird, but I think she was just annoyed by him. I mean, maybe there are some things that our parents banned that they just were fucking sick of. Oh, that actually is very plausible. I say that as someone who had to tell my daughter that cocoa melon died.
Starting point is 00:13:25 Right. It's the only way to get her to stop fucking watch. Oh, damn. I wish we could, but Coco Melons did. I would love to watch Coco Melon. Unfortunately, died in a plane crash. But unfortunately, all done. Sorry.
Starting point is 00:13:40 Yeah. Yeah, I think anything that had teens in it, my mom was like, you're not a teen, so you can't watch something with teens. This one is definitely pretty raunchy for like a nine-year-old. So did you see it as a VHS? What age did you actually get to see it? I think it was college. Wow, really?
Starting point is 00:14:03 That long. You know, you kind of miss the boat on things. Totally. And then it's like, well, everybody. So it really wasn't a big movie for people my age. Oh, okay. I don't know. I think that I guess the people I grew up with were kind of just Jim
Starting point is 00:14:19 and dorks. I think we were all just like, let's watch Labyrinth again. Like it wasn't really, there wasn't any clue. I think that's also very sexual. The craft. The craft is probably the sexiest movie that I watched as a kid. Jordan, did you see this movie? Yep, saw it in theaters and then, yeah, several times on VHS and DVD afterwards. And yeah, I, yeah, I really love it. For Southern California people, this movie, I mean, especially Los Angeles people, but for Southern, California people in general, this movie is like incredibly
Starting point is 00:14:53 of the era. It is formative in this way that I think maybe the way people reacted to Valley Girl was very similar. But this movie created an entire didn't create, but it showcased an entire lingo that people used
Starting point is 00:15:09 for a full on decade after its release. That's true. Whatever. Is this where as as if? I mean, is this where we got as if? Yes. I mean, it's, I think it's where I first heard it. I don't think I'd ever heard anyone say as if before until this movie came out. And I of course
Starting point is 00:15:25 I did make a sting out of that. Ew! Get off of me! As if! It works pretty good. It works pretty good. I didn't even have to move that around. Yeah. It's crazy. I have so many questions for you guys about this movie because I'm the only one in this trio not from
Starting point is 00:15:41 Southern California. So it feels like there's a lot of inside jokes about what it's like to grow up there. And I can't tell if they are like made up stylized choices or if they're true. Do people get nose jobs in high school? Nose jobs was a big meme in Los Angeles around this time. This was like there was a huge plastic surgery boom and straight up though rich kids were known to get nose jobs. We're known to get jaw jobs. There was like people were getting plastic surgery at a young age, but it was usually
Starting point is 00:16:19 always played off like a deviated septum or something. Yeah, there was a medical necessity for it, like a deviated septum or there was like a jaw issue and whatnot. But for the most part, it was straight up cosmetic and it was only... My boobs are so small I might die. I might die from too small of boobs. Yeah, it's possible. I have a fatal case of being in the itty-bitty-titty committee.
Starting point is 00:16:46 But when people like walk around with those bandages on their face and stuff? I mean, it was rare. I went to public school, so it wasn't maybe as much. But there was definitely, I knew a couple of girls who got nose jobs. And it wasn't, you know, it wasn't a total rarity. And they definitely showcased that in this movie. Yeah, I didn't know anyone who had a nose job until I, like, moved to Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Yeah. Like 10 years ago. Oh, it was a thing. It was a thing, dude. Yeah. Well, yeah, let's, uh, start. talking about it. We get, I mean,
Starting point is 00:17:22 fucking needle drops of plenty. I think the opening, the opening montage has like three separate songs in it. And they're all great. It starts out with the cover of Kids in America by the Muffs.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Kim Shattuck sending in this song, she died recently. The Muffs were great. She was great. She was in the Pixies for a minute. Yeah, fucking go listen to some old Muffs albums. They're so fucking good.
Starting point is 00:17:47 And yes, we get, was she replacing, Kim Deal? She did replace Kim Deal for a minute, yeah. Okay. So, and yeah. And so yeah, we have a voiceover from Leisure Stone, Share. She's saying that she knows her life
Starting point is 00:18:00 probably looks a lot like a Nogzima commercial. It does? Yeah, I know. Remember Nogzima? I was a Strydex man. What did you guys use to get rid of Zitz? That is horrible for your skin. No, not me. I mean, clearly it wasn't. Have you seen this shit? Have you seen this epidermis?
Starting point is 00:18:20 Yeah, yeah. I had eczema. Oh. So eczema is the opposite problem. I have no oil in my skin, so I had rashes. Whereas like everyone who had all the like, you know, the pimples and stuff, they were just very oily. And I was like, oh, it must be nice to have a little bit of moisture in your skin. I feel like all of the skin products from when we were kids,
Starting point is 00:18:47 about hurting yourself. Like I use that St. Ives, like face scrub, apricot face scrub. Yes. Which is like, I think that they like had to like outlaw the original format because it was basically shrapnel like scraping your face.
Starting point is 00:19:03 And then it's like it's worth it ugly. Yeah, but then we'd follow it up with the stridex. Like we'd rip our skin off and then put alcohol over our face. And then that that fucking neutragina that would suck you dry. Like horrible. Anyway, Noxema, though, smelled amazing. So yeah, we got Cher.
Starting point is 00:19:23 She lives an amazing life. Liz in Beverly Hills. She chooses her clothes with a computer. Amazing. Fucking cutting edge. Isn't that the future? I think we all thought we were going to get cool stuff like this. And then just didn't happen.
Starting point is 00:19:38 Yeah, I mean, the internet just, it made a lot of other things possible, but none of them were as good as choosing what you get to wear. Yeah, that's true. So yeah, she has a wonderful house. Her dad is Dan Hadea. He's very gruff, very sweet. And she has a stepbrother named Josh, who's always coming over. This is Paul Rudd looking about exactly.
Starting point is 00:20:04 Almost the same. The same. Yeah, I know. A cold take about Paul Rudd, but boy, howdy, this is just basically how he looks in friendship. It's not fair, and I don't appreciate it. No. Also, I just want to point out one interesting thing about this particular era was that her name is Claire Horowitz. And so she- Oh, sorry, excuse me, Cher Horowitz. And Horowitz is a Jewish last name, but they just don't talk about that. It's just, she is just like a rich blonde Jewish girl, but they don't. It's not a movie that's like what it's like to be. It's just like, no, she's just like some white girl. And that's true. That is what it is. And I just, growing up, I always thought it was funny that, you know, she was just Jewish, but no one, it didn't talk about it at all.
Starting point is 00:20:55 And I, yeah, I don't know. Well, it makes me wonder, some of, if any of these names are in references to Emma, which is the story it's based off of. Certainly not Horowitz. I don't think Jane Austen wrote about Jews. That would be great, though. That would be great. But I did watch the Emma, the newest Emma movie not too long ago. And it was fun to actually see the parallels between the movies, like the stories or whatever.
Starting point is 00:21:23 I was like, oh, this is referencing that. I don't know. I have not read Emma or seen in the movies. Oh, they're great. Are the mighty, mighty boss tones in it? Oh, we'll get to it. Anyway, so yeah, she picks up her best friend, Dion, who is one of those people I mentioned in the intro. where you're like, oh, hey.
Starting point is 00:21:43 Oh, Maga. Oh, that's what I didn't actually realize that's who you were talking about. Stacey Dash, yeah. Yeah, Stacey Dash. It's too bad. She's so good. Yeah, she's great in this. So great in this movie.
Starting point is 00:21:54 And I think her clothes are the best clothes in the whole fucking movie. So, um, a wonderful segue, Emily. She is wearing a white top hat with a bunch of clothes on it. Hold, Matt. Hold.
Starting point is 00:22:06 I'm waiting. I'm waiting. Now, this. People might say this is the worst hat in the movie. I think there's a worse hat. I think there's a worse hat. So maybe Matt, hold that sting.
Starting point is 00:22:22 I'll hold that sting. I'll wait for that one. So they're going to school. Their debate teacher, Wallace Sean, that's a great, great, oh my God. I forgot he was in this guy. And looking kind of swaggery. Looking good. He's a professor.
Starting point is 00:22:37 Yes. Wallace Sean definitely has a, I don't give a fuck. And he's like so good, you know. Yeah, he's very good. Don't they describe his age as 43 in this? 47. 47.
Starting point is 00:22:48 I clocked that as well and I was like, are you fucking kidding? You old people. That was like a gut punch. I was like, listen, I'm only 41, but come on. That's insane. That is so insane. That is inconceivable. So yeah, so she's
Starting point is 00:23:08 Sharers is doing a debate about immigration. and she likens it to planning a party for her dad where people showed up who didn't RSVP, but it made the party better. And she says it does not say RSVP on the Statue of Liberty. Which I don't hate it. Or which good takes.
Starting point is 00:23:23 Honestly, that was a great take. And not only that, but like the way that her teacher I don't know, reacts to it. I was like, you got to give her more credit for that because that was actually really good. I know, yeah. Part of this is her getting a C in debate. That's like part of what kicks off the plot.
Starting point is 00:23:40 And I'm like, she's great. She's better than all these other kids. Well, the other one, the Redhead bitch, didn't even try. Yeah, exactly. She just, yeah, fucking Amber. So, yeah. So she goes, hilarious. She goes home, tells her dad, you got to see in debate, but she says she's like, like,
Starting point is 00:23:56 she's learned from him and she's going to try and argue up all of her grades. And he loves this. And then someone in the other fucking room is listening to a Mopey college radio station. And the song, the song they pick to. to let you know that some fucking brainiac sad boys in the other room is fake plastic trees by radiohead. Emily, I was wondering if you clocked that. Oh, yeah, it's the first note on my pad of paper. Make fun of Matt about Radiohead.
Starting point is 00:24:27 Go ahead. I was like, I mean, of all the hot takes, the good takes that Cher Horowitz has, I'd say this one's right up there at the top. Big plastic trees is a great song. I mean, I just don't know. It's really, it's just, it's back when they were trying to be U-2, but, you know, I think they did it better than you two. Yeah, this was, this was their U-2 era. This is when Tom York thought he was Bono. How?
Starting point is 00:24:57 Oh, my God, that poor thing. A lot of belting, yeah, he was just a weird-looking Bono. Oh, I just love that she was like, absolutely not, because I. It's nuts to me that this was like what they considered to be like the, like, the, like, deep moody music of college radio because I was like weren't they a big band? They're already a big band. They had creep Yeah, I think this is a thing where like obviously the soundtrack had to be big
Starting point is 00:25:23 and full, because this is so the era of like you have to sell the soundtrack too. And like it's all songs from the same record label. So yeah, I'm sure there was an actual indie band that they could have chosen for this. Totally. They could have played pavement. They could have played fucking neutral milk hotel. There's a bunch of bands that could have played. Neutral Milk Hotel was around in 1995. I believe so. Isn't that the year their big album came out?
Starting point is 00:25:49 I only heard about them in college and boy, I'm going to put them in the same like classes radio head because no thank you. Oh, you're just wrong, dude. You're just wrong. The Decemberists. 98. Okay, it was 98 when the aeroplane over the sea came out. But still, in the same era. Yeah, same arrow.
Starting point is 00:26:10 But the point is, is this song plays twice in this movie. Fake plastic trees plays twice. You hear them later in the car listening to it. And another radiohead song plays my iron lung in one of the scenes. I forget what happens. So, yeah, so this sad boy indie rock that's not actually indie rock is playing. It's being listened to by Josh, played by Paul Rudd. So, you know, let's say it now
Starting point is 00:26:40 so we don't have to say it later. In hindsight, this was pretty icky. He's in college. She's 15. They shouldn't have done this. Yeah, that was, that was she 15. She's 16. She turned, anyway.
Starting point is 00:26:53 Yeah, I mean, whatever. Still, still, you know, one of these things. Listen, we can all agree that it's hot that they're step sibling. No, that's fine. That's allowed. In fact, I don't even know why they had to add step. They should have been related. They should have.
Starting point is 00:27:07 I just realized cruel intentions, which we've did that not too long ago. That's another one. How many movies had this in there? Yeah, the teens, the teen movies of our youth had fucked up sexual politics. Oh, for sure. Yeah. But yeah, I mean, obviously, like this movie has aged remarkably well in most other ways. But yeah, this is one where you're like, I mean, we've all had crushes on our cousins, right?
Starting point is 00:27:36 Oh, yeah. Sure. Not mine. No. I wish all my cousins were like 20 years older than me and men. So, you know, I didn't really get to know them. Okay. Oh, all right.
Starting point is 00:27:51 No, but yes, Emily, it's totally okay. And I respect your culture and you respect ours. You California culture thing. You have your own thing. Us Tennesseans, we have ours. Right. That's right. Matt has radio head.
Starting point is 00:28:03 Uh-huh. Radiohead and O.D. And the viper with the second cousin. So yeah, and Josh, not only does he listen to Radiohead be watching CNN. Wow, he loves the news. He loves news. So he's kind of always giving her shit for being shallow
Starting point is 00:28:21 and she's always giving him, you know, shit for being boring. Blah, blah, blah. That'll come to a head later. So she thinks that if she starts to get Wallace Sean laid, then he will raise her grade. and so she sets him up with Miss Geist who is the kind of like I don't know what subject she teaches
Starting point is 00:28:40 but she's kind of like a bleeding heart liberal and wants them to like clean up the ocean poetry? Hey, hey maybe Matt what? You want to get that sting ready of who we'd play? Who we'd play?
Starting point is 00:28:51 I would be love to be Mrs. Geis. I think she's so fucking adorable. She's awesome. I wish she said more stuff because she's absolutely charming but she's also stunningly beautiful like. Yeah, they tried her best,
Starting point is 00:29:05 They try their best to, she's all that. Her hair is curly and her lipstick's bad. And it's just like, no, she's a hot lady. No, that's a stunningly beautiful 10 out of 10 women. Yes, exactly. We just put some glasses on. I love her, but I'd also want to play the PE teacher played by Julie Brown. That's right.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Who is also in Earth Girls Are Easy and she's like was a VJ for MTV back in the day. Yeah, she's awesome. Love her. Yeah, she's great. So there's this kind of little, like, let's hook these teachers up, plot going on. But then also we get a new kid moved to school. This is Ty. This is played by Britney Murphy.
Starting point is 00:29:46 She's so fucking great in this. Amazing. Break through role. This is the beginning of her career. She's singing sometimes, like just casually in this movie. And I'm like, holy shit, her voice is beautiful. Yeah, she sings the Mentos commercial. Yeah, that's great.
Starting point is 00:30:00 Yeah, I don't know if she ever had albums or anything. or did any musicals, but yeah, she's got a great voice. Super good. When she's singing Rolling with the Homies, that's when I was like, oh, she's handsome. She's got a pretty voice. Yeah. I think that is kind of the definitive needle drop of this movie, too, is with the homies. I don't know what that song is.
Starting point is 00:30:19 Well, it's interesting because that song is brought up and they sing it together. But then it's also playing in the background and you're like, they're actually not singing the melody whatsoever. Oh, okay. It's rolling with the home. Homies. That's how it goes. And they're going, rolling with the homies. I'm like, that's not, man. That sounds like a fucking jingle.
Starting point is 00:30:40 What are we doing? That might have been a thing where they weren't listening to the song on set. And then they're just like, ah, sing, roll. Anyway. The only thing I thought it was was the rolling down the street smoking. Ficking in dough, sipping on gin juice. Which I only know that song because of that country version. Sippin on geni.
Starting point is 00:30:59 Oh, I don't know. There's like a, there's like a, there's like a bluegrass version. And I can't remember what band does him. That sounds bad. I heard that first. And then I heard the other one. And I was like, oh, they're covering that country song. My mind on my money.
Starting point is 00:31:14 I was not allowed to listen to hip-hop. Oh, I'm sorry. So, yeah. So Ty, new kid in town. She's kind of like a stoner. She asks for some herbal refreshment. They think she's talking about tea. That's very good.
Starting point is 00:31:27 And she's from New Jersey or New York or something? You know, I didn't clock where she was from. She's got an East Coast accent. So she's like, she's not used to how they do it in the West Coast. In the West Coast, they somehow don't smoke weed. I'm like, all right. She's like, you can spark a duby at a party, but. Yeah, don't do it at school.
Starting point is 00:31:45 She has a lot of rules. I think that she's got a good set of rules there. Yeah. She got a nice head of, you know, head on her shoulders. Did you guys smoke weed in high school? Yeah. I didn't till college. Me too.
Starting point is 00:31:57 Yeah. Well, that's good, too. I was quite the rule follower. I was too. And then I went to college and I've been partying ever since. Ain't no rules. So, yeah. But Ty has a crush on this kind of stony skateboard guy.
Starting point is 00:32:15 He's one of the Lodies. They call them the Lodies. And shares like, we don't date those guys. She wants to set him up with Elton, who's like one of the popular guys. Elton is absolutely the oldest teen in this movie. Jesus Christ. Oldest teen. very old looking man here
Starting point is 00:32:34 but they want to go to set them up at a party in the valley and this is definitely one of those like you know Southern California movies were always making fun of the valley wherever we're not going to the valley why because it's hot like temperature wise
Starting point is 00:32:51 far yeah that was like the thing with the valley at least class so the Beverly Hills people probably wouldn't like that too it was like you had to go over the hill for something than you were dealing with more working class people. That's how... I see. At least that's how it's framed in this movie.
Starting point is 00:33:09 Yeah. This would be like if this was set in Nashville, it would be like rich Brentwood people not wanting to go to like Gallatin. That's where the Nashville heads out there. Is there a Brentwood in Nashville? Oh, yeah. There's a Brentwood here too, and it's also rich.
Starting point is 00:33:26 Did I make a poor Brentwood? I don't know. And what's the poorest Brentwood? Yeah, yeah. They have a poor Britwood? Go on Reddit. Tell us the poorest Brentwood. And if you're from there.
Starting point is 00:33:37 So yeah, they go to the valley. A bunch of Christmas stuff up that no one ever really acknowledges. So clueless is a Christmas movie. No. I guess it is. Anyway, so we see a guy dancing at this party and he is wearing a cat in the hat hat. Hold! Hold!
Starting point is 00:33:59 I don't think this is the worst. hat. I have a hat that I am very confident is the worst hat in the movie. I hope I know what it is. I don't think it's this one. I don't think it's this one. But anyway, so they're at the party. Sorry, Ty gets hit in the head with a shoe. That was hilarious. Very funny. She gets hurt a lot in this movie. She does. I know, yeah. She's physical comedy. She can take a fall. She really was incredibly talented. She's very funny in this movie. So that's when they sing, rolling with the homies, not to the tune of the actual song. And they try and get Elton to take Ty home, but he takes Cher home because he's in love with her. He gets kind of handsy with her out in front of circus liquor. They say it's in Sun Valley. That is in North Hollywood. That is North Hollywood. It's a no-ho spot.
Starting point is 00:34:46 But I like that they went to Sun Valley because it's such a random valley spot to be in. I didn't even know Sun Valley was there until I was an adult. I just never heard of it. What is the valley? Like what places are in the valley? because I'm always confused about what people mean by that. The valley is anywhere north of the canyons. I'm not a Boy Scout.
Starting point is 00:35:07 I don't know what North is. I need to tell me the places. I don't have my compass handy. Wait, you don't know what North is. Okay, that's on you, Emily. You should know what North is. I don't know what North is. All right.
Starting point is 00:35:20 You know, San Francisco is North, right? In English, please? Sure, but tell me like the neighborhoods. Just name some fucking neighborhoods. I'll name the neighborhoods for you. So if you're going, it's Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys, okay, North Hollywood Studio City, Sun Valley, Encino, Chatsworth, you know, those. That's a lot of places.
Starting point is 00:35:42 Oh, it's a bunch of places. Valley's big. So after she gets dumped at Circus Liquor, which is in North Hollywood, that's when she gets robbed and has to have Paul Rudd come pick her up. So yeah, they're all kind of talking about this later at lunch And we learned that Cher is a virgin And she says you see how picky I am about my shoes And those only go on my feet Fucking great line
Starting point is 00:36:08 A lot of great lines in this movie And then she kind of does this little monologue about How bad guys of the time dressed And this is so spot on Yeah and we see a bunch of you know Kind of like white guys in sagging pants And like sagging layers ass dudes.
Starting point is 00:36:26 Yeah. And it's crazy. And chain wallets. This was the style at the time. This is not an exaggeration. Yeah. I mean, I don't know if this look will ever come back.
Starting point is 00:36:38 Oh, no, it's back. I was going to say these guys. Are people sagging? These guys kind of look like Gen Z guys. Maybe not the sagging, but the pants are definitely giant now. They look a little Timothy Shalame. Yes, they are back.
Starting point is 00:36:53 They are. But they're not sagging. No, I don't think so. People don't understand how wild the sagging got. I don't, I've never understood. Showing your underwear was part of it. It was crazy. Your silk tweety bird boxers.
Starting point is 00:37:08 And then we weren't allowed to have a whale tail. We got called a slut. Right, exactly. I think whale tails are back though, I think. Oh, that's fun. I know. I don't think that I can get a thong on anymore, but I will try. I will.
Starting point is 00:37:24 And I needed to have like a little. Well, I did wear a thong and show my bare ass on Good Mythical Evening. Yeah. Exactly. So I can wear a thong. You can wear a thong. It's totally possible. But yeah, no, man, this was like the style was so just putrid.
Starting point is 00:37:40 And I was one of those people. I had big old pants. Big old pants. I was sagging. Wallet chain? Oh, of course. I had a wallet chain. You got to protect your wallet.
Starting point is 00:37:51 You got to protect your wallet. You got to protect your seven, 13-year-old. That's right. Your wallet filled with pictures of Britney Spears and whatever other. How am I going to go to Del Taco later if someone steals this? How am I going to get a free ice cream after 12 ice creams? Well, what's interesting to me is like this look in Nashville would just mean you were a bad kid. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:38:16 That's like a juggalo look. Well, no, it was just considered to be like, oh, these kids are probably doing drugs or they, you know. Those kids were more likely to be in trouble or like teachers were paying attention to them more. And I dress like this. Yeah. So for them like, Dirk and Patty, our characters, Matt and I have these new metal mall goth kind of characters. And but those were the kids that were always in trouble. I was always in trouble and all I was was just failing school.
Starting point is 00:38:49 Right, right. I wasn't misbehaving or anything. It wasn't even that I was in trouble. And it was just the popular thing, especially with white kids. White kids would always try to do whatever the big black artists at the time we're doing, whatever the style was. There was always black style that white. And it's still the same these days. People are, it's still white kids wanting to be cool.
Starting point is 00:39:11 Yeah. But it was just so, so funny to see it in this school in this movie. Because I'm like, yeah, dude, this is such of its era that I just don't know if anyone knows how fucking ridiculous. it got. There were people who's straight up, it was their pants had fallen down. It looked like a joke. You could see the outline of their, it was just their underwear was on and the pants were, it was like they were about to take a piss but forgot. But then it's like, and their asses were nothing to write home about. No, they didn't even have nice asses. I'm looking at this tiny little butt. Yeah. It's like 15 year old, like, cool, I guess. Yeah. So yeah. So, uh, share, not a fan of these guys, but she is a fan of another new kid, Christian. He walks in, he's well-dressed. And you know he is because he's wearing
Starting point is 00:40:02 polited slacks, fucking giant pleated slacks on this high school kid. And he is cool, I guess. I don't know. And he's also, I got to say, I'm doing one. He is, in my opinion, the smallest guy. Yes. He is a small little guy.
Starting point is 00:40:20 Like, I don't know if he's smaller than Wallace Sean, but I think he is. I think he's I think he's itty. So he's the new guy and he, Sierra starts flirting with him. So they make a date. He goes to pick her up. He's wearing, you know, his pleaded slacks. And he's carrying a fedora, which I think is the worst hat in this movie full of pretty bad hats.
Starting point is 00:40:43 It's always the fedora. I agree. I agree. And he's, and you know, Dan Hadea makes fun of him for like wanting to be in the rat pack. And this is a representative of that swing. dance culture that very weirdly came back in the 90s. So he's, I think, one of those kids. It's crazy
Starting point is 00:40:59 because it's about a year away from really breaking through to the mainstream at this point. But yeah, it is and it's so funny because he's using like this like 50s lingo and shit. The character is so weird.
Starting point is 00:41:15 I remember even at the time watching this movie going like, what kind of guy is this? Is this a kind of guy? And then later when you find out he's gay, you're like, oh, I guess gay guys are really into sounding like 1950s beatniks. Yeah. No, he just was gay and also one of these guys. So, yeah, so they go to what is, it's supposed to be one of Josh's college parties.
Starting point is 00:41:43 And that's, and now we'll go to our segment that we don't do that much. What do we call this thing? Oh, yes, a scavenger hunt or a message to you movie where I point out Scobbins who are in the movies. This was kind of obvious. The Mighty Mighty Bostodes are in here. I loved them.
Starting point is 00:42:05 This was like, peak them for me. They were my favorite band at this point. That's knock on wood, right? Is that them? Yeah, that's their album that comes up maybe two years after this. That's when they really blew up. That's when they really blew up.
Starting point is 00:42:17 I know to listen to them. I've never really listened to them. Both of the songs in this movie are bangers. Like they are legitimately good. Yeah, really cool songs. The lead singer, unfortunately, became an RFK guy recently. No, God damn it. And, you know, a lot of good guys in that band.
Starting point is 00:42:34 He didn't write all the songs. But, yeah, he became an RFK guy. I thought he was a Jimmy Kim. I thought he was the musical director at Jimmy Kimmel. So, you know how he's not anymore? Oh. So he wouldn't get, so he, Dickie Barrett, would not get vaccinated. and then the Bostones broke up
Starting point is 00:42:53 because they couldn't play anywhere because their guy was yelling about how he wasn't vaccinated and then, you know, Kimmel threw him off and yeah listen, I could talk for two hours about this. That's crazy. I love that you know all of this lore
Starting point is 00:43:08 about the mighty, mighty boss talks. I think you should do a documentary about what ska bands are good people and bad people. Just do that. Tell me about the specials. Are they cool? These guys are pretty cool. Those of them are dead.
Starting point is 00:43:23 Oh, that's good. Thank God. I think they were all good guys. They actually got canceled. Yeah? The big, the big. By God. By God.
Starting point is 00:43:31 By life. Yes. The big problematic in the sky. Yeah. Sorry. You canceled. Says God. But yeah, I do love both the songs in this movie.
Starting point is 00:43:45 It's where did you go? And someday, I suppose, both two. two great songs. And yeah, I watched this with the captions on. And when they show a close-up of the singer, the caption just says, singing ska song. Yeah, that's true. He is. And he's doing this gritted teeth thing that stuck with me forever. I don't know why, but every time they like would pan to him or they would, you know, show him on screen, he would just, he had, his, his teeth were just out and he was doing this grimace. And I was just like, what a cool guy. Yeah. He'll be cool forever
Starting point is 00:44:21 Okay, and Jordan, I want to ask you about this Yeah, thank you. There's one guy, Dickie, who is singing. Yes. And then there's another guy who, as far as I can tell, is just dancing. Matt, they had a guy that just danced. Okay. I just wanted to be short. And, you know, I think a lot of us.
Starting point is 00:44:37 So it's like, Scott had the moment when it was popular, right? And there was the, you know, summer or the year and a half when, like, it was everywhere. Yes. And then just such a steep drop when it became. became a joke, right? Like, people are like, get me the fuck away from this. This is so corny. And then I think about all those bands who are like,
Starting point is 00:44:56 fuck, we have nine guys in this band. Like, this is not sustainable. And now we have also a guy that just dances. That's how you know a band is doing well is when they can afford just a dancing guy. Yeah, that's when there's just like the real, this is going to be popular forever. That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:45:15 Everyone will love ska forever. We can have a guy. guy that just dances. That was the sign of like a good economy and SCA, a good SCA economy. Yeah. Yeah. Scottconomy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:26 I mean, new metal came back. In this SCOconomy? Yeah, in this SCOcone. Another saxophone player in this SCOcone. Thanks, thanks, Obama. Yeah. Oh, God. Anyway.
Starting point is 00:45:45 So, yeah, anyway, that guy, you know, know, doesn't like vaccines or whatever. So anyway, Paul Rudd drives them home. You know, we're kind of about at the, we're about at the finale of the movie. Why don't we do this? Let's take a break. And then we'll come back for some more. Hey, we're back.
Starting point is 00:46:24 It's free with ads. We're talking about clueless. So, Cher is kind of constantly trying to seduce Christian. And we, the audience, are slowly coming around to the fact that he's gay, rents a bunch of Tony Curtis movies, calls him videos. tapes. He's going to bring over some videotapes to her house. It's all Tony Curtis movies. And yeah, like, our, you know. Sparticus and some like it hot. And some like it hot. Those for, you know, as a 10-year-old kid, for me, neither of those
Starting point is 00:46:52 rangabella's, oh, gay movies. But I guess that's what it was implying. Sure. I think his whole personality just made him seem like an eccentric guy who liked the past. Right. Yeah, exactly. There wasn't anything about it that seemed very gay. I think that he was, he was both, you know. He was a gay guy and also one of those I was born in the wrong time. But it kind of made it seem like they were trying to make it stereotypes that would hint everybody along and I was like, no, I would have never ever guessed this. Right. Like you wonder how it's even possible that Donald Faison's character guessed it. But we haven't got there. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:47:31 Yeah, yeah. Yeah, we're kind of there. Yeah. Dion's boyfriend played by Donald Faison. I don't think we've mention him yet. He, yeah, he kind of lets them know, oh, by the way, this guy's gay. And, you know, it's, by today's standards, not, this stuff isn't like great. But I think for the time, this was like, yeah, and then they're nice to him and like him and he's their friend, you know, and no one's grossed out by it. I think this is like, oh, yeah, totally. It's not about making fun at him.
Starting point is 00:47:59 Like, like, Donald Faison. Yeah, it's, Donald Faison is laughing at her for not knowing that he's, gay and you're barking up the wrong tree as opposed to it like they're calling him you know like a cake baker which I remember at the time being like is that a specifically gay job? I don't know
Starting point is 00:48:18 but you know it might be somewhat problematic but really the movie I think was actually kind of breaking a pretty big boundary where the joke wasn't that he was gay it was that chair doesn't have any gaitar sure yeah so that's I think that's a
Starting point is 00:48:34 big difference Boy, if I was nine and watched this movie, I wonder if I would have been like, huh, I got questions. Actually, wait a minute. I knew what gay people were when I was seven. Nice. Because my dad played for a closeted lesbian country singer. He was on the road, and all the women in the band were also gay.
Starting point is 00:48:56 And there were a lot of men in the band, but my dad would be on tour all the time. And people would ask my mom, God, what's it like? Your husband's like in a tour bus for months with these beautiful. women. My mom goes, I just really trust him. Like, we're very in love and it's fine. But she, the artist, she, well, she's passed away. So it's Holly Dunn was her name. But she gave me a teddy bear and stuff. And I was like, I love Holly and all this stuff. And he goes, oh, my dad used that as an opportunity to tell me about homosexuality. Gay people. I love that. And so I guess I wouldn't have been, like, I would have known what was going on if I was watching this as a nine year old.
Starting point is 00:49:34 Possibly. Maybe. No big deal. Oh, look at that. So, yeah. So they just kind of absorb Christian into the friend group. But while this is happening, Ty is getting more popular than Cher around school.
Starting point is 00:49:48 And she talks about wanting to date Josh. And that kind of like causes them to have this big fight. Or Ty lets her have one of the most devastating fucking burns of all time. You're just a virgin who can't drive. That was way hard That was a fucking savage But those two things were true That's why they heard so bad
Starting point is 00:50:11 That's why I heard so much Yeah That's the yeah There's the I love how no one can drive in this movie Like Dion sucks at driving And I'm like I think everyone just sucks at driving in L.A
Starting point is 00:50:22 It's just kind of the thing right? Yeah They like get on the freeway and scream It's really funny That is exactly how I feel When I'm on free That is how I learned to drive as well Except instead of it being with like hot friends
Starting point is 00:50:33 It was with my brother who tricked me. And he tricked me by having me go on the freeway without me knowing. And then I had to get off the freeway. And then I stopped being afraid of the freeway. Trial by fire. Yeah. That's good.
Starting point is 00:50:47 But then this causes Cher to realize that she's in love with Josh because he's, as she says, kind of a Baldwin. Which is slang for hot guy back then. You know how those hot Baldwin, Stephen, Billy, Alligot. It's the 90s. He's not a murderer. Yeah. Now it's slang for murderer.
Starting point is 00:51:09 Yeah, it's like for murderer or maga guy. Maga guy. Christian nationalist. I think there's one good Baldwin. Who's the good Baldwin? One of them. How many are there? Like five.
Starting point is 00:51:21 There's too many. But anyway. Danny, Billy, Alex, Stephen. Donner Dasher, dancer, prancer. I feel like this is like good will hunt. Leonardo. Donatello. Goodwill hunting
Starting point is 00:51:37 and he's just making up all of his fake brothers Billy Bobby Ricky Danny Danny Danny Danny A lot of bold ones So Cher decides she's going to like turn her life around and like become You know the woman that Josh wants And she just does all this charity stuff
Starting point is 00:51:55 Watching the news Watching the news and not Renan Stimpy They're hearing about Bosnia And she goes I thought they declared peace in the middle Elise and I'm like ah this is great that's fun yeah it's good stuff
Starting point is 00:52:08 but then she kind of encourages Ty to get with the stony skateboard guy Travis they go to his skateboard contest played by Brick and Meyer yeah he's so funny everything he says is funny in this
Starting point is 00:52:20 like they write him so good yeah he's great yeah it's the same writer as fast times you know it's Amy Heckerling oh I didn't know she wrote fast times yeah and so it's like
Starting point is 00:52:33 you know this is she's used to writing this kind of character and makes him like very sweet and cool and you know clearly perfect for Ty but you know it's the way the society works she would have been the person I had a crush on like out of everybody for sure
Starting point is 00:52:49 especially when he spit something out and then he put it back in his mouth oh yeah that was cool yeah sometimes I had a crush on the guy who turned his eyelids inside out it happens that's a cool guy listen a lot of cool guys out there but yeah then it kind of ends with them
Starting point is 00:53:03 going to the wedding of while Sean and Miss Geis and chair catches the bouquet and that's the end and that's clueless. Yeah. Beautiful. Beautiful ending. So we're going to tell you what we thought about the movie, but first we got to do the hunk watch.
Starting point is 00:53:22 It's hunk watch. So any big thoughts on the hunks of this film? It's kind of a tough one. It is a tough one. It's just it's hunks on hunks. Yeah, I don't even know how. I mean. Travis? is definitely the one I'd want to bang.
Starting point is 00:53:39 But Wallace Sean kind of, it was giving me something in this movie. I don't know. And he was walking in the courtyard or whatever. I was like, look at that gate. I don't know. There's something about him. Yeah, no, there's something about his walking like a duck
Starting point is 00:53:55 that makes you want to go, let me see that corkscrew dick. Oh, yeah. Quark. You know what I'm going to make him. Whack, quack, quack. Yeah, Matt, any thoughts on the hunks of this movie? You know what? I'm going to go with Jeremy Sisto playing Elton.
Starting point is 00:54:17 Okay. Gorgeous. Elton is gorgeous in this movie. Character is an asshole. Yes, his character is an asshole, but he is adorable. He's gorgeous. I think he's, you know, clearly the hunk of the movie. he is just maybe not as hunky as Paul Rudd but you know to each other yeah definitely not but he also he has that AJ from Empire Records like sexy vibe like that's and of course that's I like that's I like he's hot I know he's in other stuff but I can't remember what he's in yeah neither can I I had to like look up his name to be like who is this guy and then I saw what he looks like now and I'm like yeah I don't I don't know if I know him from anything else
Starting point is 00:55:02 He was apparently on a show called FBI. Is that show still around? Don't know. We should ask our parents as probably something our parents watch every Thursday night on CBS. Nine seasons it is still going. He must be rich as fuck.
Starting point is 00:55:20 He's probably richer than Alicia Silverstone now. And I'm going to give my hunk watch to the guy who just dances in the Mighty Mighty Boston. Because who suffers more? When your singer goes maga and your band dissolves. Like the other guys, they can become studio musicians. Right, exactly. Well, maybe he can open for Ed Sheeran or something.
Starting point is 00:55:43 Yeah, someone's got open there. It's just Ed Sheard Ocapela with that guy dancing. I don't know. I don't know. It sounds better than Radiohead. Oh, boy. Okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:55:58 Those are the hunks of the film. We're going to tell you what we thought about it right after this. Hey, we're back. It's free with ads. We're going to tell you what we thought about clueless. But first, we want to tell you about our bonus episodes. It's we like shows. We like shows. There it is. It's beautiful.
Starting point is 00:56:38 Every month we pick a different TV pilot that we love, and we talk about it with you, the audience. We each get to pick. This month it's my pick, and I am announcing now that my pick will be the pilot of Star Trek Strange New Worlds Nice The first track we've ever covered on the podcast Yeah
Starting point is 00:57:00 To show that I really Have you guys seen it? Have you guys seen Star Trek Strange New Worlds? I have not I have not I'm surprised we haven't done a Star Trek movie yet Oh yeah we should we should We're leaving nerd money on the table But yeah so this will be our first Star Trek thing
Starting point is 00:57:14 Kind of fun I really like this show And I'm excited to share it with Matt and Emily If you want to hear the bonus episodes go to maximum fun.org slash join. It's quick, it's easy, supports the show, you get some bonus stuff. We love it when you do that. Okay, let's go around the horn and talk about clueless. Emily, we'll start with you on a scale of one to ten, super loud commercials.
Starting point is 00:57:42 What do you think of clueless? Dang, I mean, this is going to be crazy, but I've got three tippy tens in a row right now. It's just like, I don't know. It makes you feel good when it's on. It's like having a best friend with you hanging out. I love all the clothes. I love all the jokes. I love everything about it.
Starting point is 00:58:02 And there's a lot of hunks in there. And yeah. Yeah. I was going to try to say, and I too am a virgin who doesn't drive, but the doesn't drive thing is the only true thing about that. It's true. I'm a slut who doesn't drive. Matt, what you think of Clueless?
Starting point is 00:58:22 I am also going to give it a tippy 10. Upon rewatch, it's even better than last time. It is truly one of those movies, like you said, feels like an old friend. It's like Shawshank Redemption. If it's on, I'll watch it. It's just a perfect comfort movie. It's also very of the era. And as I'm getting older, I'm realizing, I'm now interfacing with a lot of younger kids now,
Starting point is 00:58:48 because I have kids and, you know, my family has kids. And I'm realizing that the 90s are like how the 60s were for us growing up. Oh, God. Yes. Yeah, that sucks. Yes. No, we're old now, guys. We're going to die.
Starting point is 00:59:03 Yeah. So, like, growing up how we all, like, love the Beatles and whatnot, all these kids love Nirvana. And I, like, I guarantee you they're going to get into the Bostones, Jordan. I guarantee you, they're going to get into. real big fish, all of your faves. They'll probably like swing again. But I was talking to like a young kid. Wouldn't be wild if that just randomly came back again?
Starting point is 00:59:28 It will. I guarantee you it will. I mean, new metal came back for a little bit. Exactly. It'll all come back. TikTok will make it a thing. But so yeah, as like an actual 90s kid, which is not just an annoying BuzzFeed quiz,
Starting point is 00:59:43 but an actual thing I am, watching this movie is like, wow, this is like a time capsule. Even including when she talks about I need some place to go and, you know, and clear my mind, they cut to the West Side Pavilion. Guys, this is my local mall growing up. This was the mall that I went to. Little Matt went to Orange Julius. This is where Little Matt got arrested for stealing clothes that are Robinson's May.
Starting point is 01:00:09 Wait a minute. Yes. I need to hear more stories of you being a bad kid, Matt. Yes. I was a little thief. Me and my brother. We were just these little latchkey kids who would like go to that mall, the West Side Pavilion, and start stealing sunglasses from Pacific Sunware. Or we would just, you know, go to fucking KB toys and have them wrap up gifts in gift wrap because it was Christmas time and not pay for them.
Starting point is 01:00:35 And they would just assume, you guys. We were bad little boys. And then one day we got caught. But the point is, is this movie is, it's like a warm blanket for me. and I really enjoy it. So if I could give it an 11, I would. Oh, wow. You can give it, you know, there's a floating 11.
Starting point is 01:00:53 There's a big 11. There you go. Only one a year. One 11 a year. Yes. Yes, I also loved re-watching this. I'm going to give it an eight. Fantastic.
Starting point is 01:01:04 Yeah, it doesn't only, you know, it like, yes, there's all that great nostalgia. You know, needle drops for days. Look at the clothes. But yeah, I think underneath all that is like an actually, like a really well-done comedy. And, yeah, I don't know. Something I noticed about it this. time is that it, the main character is wrong at the beginning and learns,
Starting point is 01:01:23 like learns that she's wrong at the end. Anyway, it's kind of, I feel like in these teen movies, usually the kind of like, you know, main character is this kind of like virtuous person who everyone craps on. And then the kind of world learns to love them.
Starting point is 01:01:38 Yeah, but it's kind of interesting to have a character kind of like confronting their prejudices. Anyway, I thought that's a really cool thing about it. It's also cool. in the in terms of like the Jane Austen stories that are just like oh this virtuous you know poor family and she falls in love with a rich you know she's like a rich person who is capable of admitting when she's wrong yeah and then growing from it and it's like oh it's okay to
Starting point is 01:02:07 fuck up and embarrass yourself and then you can come back from it I don't think I don't know anything that I mean that's what I do every fucking day I apologize for something that's true That's true. You're always doing something wrong. I'm always doing something wrong. And yeah, and you could really tell that, you know, the writer kind of loves the characters. And even though they're funny, sometimes and they're dumb, sometimes she still loves them. And, you know, gives them all the benefit of the doubt.
Starting point is 01:02:32 So, yeah, I think this is just a really terrific movie. Okay. That's clueless. Let's do a little plug in. Anybody got anything? As always, go into the show notes. Please subscribe to the YouTube channel. The Anticraft.
