Starting point is 00:00:28 This is Free With Ads, the podcast that asked the question, why pay Peacock eight bucks a month to watch a bunch of Jurassic Park movies when you can go online for free and watch an adaptation of a Michael Crichton classic that may not have dinosaurs, but it does have an adorable talking gorilla who taught me how to speak from the heart. Listen to this. Jordan. Jordan.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Good. Jordan. Pretty. Jordan, pretty, podcast, man. I'm Jordan Morris. And I'm Emily Fleming. Today's movie is Congo, the cult classic jungle adventure with a practical character so cute. She makes Baby Yoda look like a little pile of rancid shit.
Starting point is 00:01:08 With us as always is the super producer, the he freak Matt Lieb, hitting us with those drops from the deepest heart of the jungle. Ugly, woman. Yes, very, very ugly woman. Now let's get your seatbelt on. Got her ass. Amy was the original Donald Trump in many ways. Hell yes. Hell yes.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Yeah, for sure. Ugly, Rosie O'Donnell. Ugly. Lock her up. Sorry. This is cool. It's the first movie of our beloved theme month. Animals Attack August.
Starting point is 00:01:47 I don't know why the Automotive Club Triple A. Oh, there's a stature. so sorry. I'll do this thing. I'll do my little thing about AAA afterwards. All right, here we go. Animal attack August.
Starting point is 00:02:02 Hell yeah. So many animals. Like I was saying, why doesn't AAA sponsor this? We can talk about all the wonderful discounts you get with your Auto Club membership. Anyway, just putting it out there. Also, can I say that I love the Animal Attack August
Starting point is 00:02:22 like sound, You know, the staying and everything. But I do think it should be, you know, the Game of Thrones, like, intros that they add a new little element to it. Sure. I'm just coming up with new more work for you to do that. Yeah, no, no. I'll add new animal sounds every time. But yeah, add a little sound every episode.
Starting point is 00:02:40 I mean, again, again, I don't want to just create more work for Matt, but can you add a little Amy into the next one? Of course I can. Of course I can. Amy, mother, stuffy. Well, yes. It's Animal's Attack August. I'll add that to it. Yeah, beautiful.
Starting point is 00:02:59 It sounds like Haley Joel Osmond. That's me to everybody in my DMs. Yeah, yeah. That was great. I'm just kidding. Nobody's in my DMs. Anyway, yeah, it's Animals Attack August. All month we're going to be talking about movies where animals fuck people up.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Hell yeah. We're starting with Congo. The animal in question. is the noble gorilla. That's right. Before we talk about this movie, which is, as of this recording, streaming free with ads,
Starting point is 00:03:29 we're going to get to know one of our hosts in a segment we call Talk to Host. Talk to host. Okay, so we are following up on a thrilling tale that Emily shared with us last week. Yes. In case you didn't hear the episode,
Starting point is 00:03:45 Emily thinks or thought she had bedbugs. Yes. And her landlords wouldn't do shit about it, So she went into her own pocket and hired a bedbug sniffing dog to find out if she had bedbugs. Emily, what happened? According to Beatle, the Spaniel, I do not have bedbugs. Hey!
Starting point is 00:04:08 Oh, that's great news. You do not have bedbugs. Bug free since 93. Look at you. Well, I mean, so I was like, oh, God, this was so stressful. I shrink wrapped all of my clothing, washed everything, hot dryer. Like I had the full two-week panic attack. But, and I was like, this is 500 bucks.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Thank you to the, to our Max Fund members. You're the reason why I got this dog to sniff out my apartment. That's right. And it was the cutest fucking dog. I was like, $500, this dog better be fucking cute. I was expecting a German Shepherd, like kind of, you know, army police looking dog. It was the floppiest. cutest little chocolate brown like a springer spaniel looking thing it's a spaniel the owner told me but and the dog's name was beetle it's such a cute dog you sent us all a picture of beetle in the group chat yeah everyone needs to see it I was like hot beetle picks on our free with ads Instagram follow us over there
Starting point is 00:05:13 and the sweetest dog too so like when they walk in you have to like first you have to um hide away or wrap in plastic all of your cleaning supplies, anything that could, like, injure the dog. And then you have to stand outside because you don't want to distract the dog. And that was the most painful experience of my life. Because I went and he's like, they're at the door. And I was like, okay, don't even pay attention to the dog. Don't look at it. And I went and opened it.
Starting point is 00:05:40 It was the cutest fucking dog I'd ever seen. And I was like, God damn it. And then when he was done, I was like, can I say hello to Beetle now? And he goes, oh, yeah. After he's done working. Every's done working. And then, like, as soon. as
Starting point is 00:05:51 Beatle was done work and immediately wanted to be all over me. Like I walked in the door and Beatle was just
Starting point is 00:05:55 like, uh, and then I got treats and I got cuddles and I love this fucking dog. Is it possible Beatle thought
Starting point is 00:06:03 you were a bed bug? Yeah. She's like, I all hail the leader of the bedbugs. The queen. The queen, red-headed bedbug.
Starting point is 00:06:13 You were wearing your dealie bobbers on your head, right? Your antenna from your from your bug's life Halloween costume.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Yeah. But, oh boy, I'm just, I'm a new woman this week. I feel like such a level of relief. And then, boy, that dog. I don't know what the name of the service was, but the guy, he said he had beagles and German shepherds and B. Spaniel. So those are the types of dogs. Magic dogs.
Starting point is 00:06:39 Wow. But I got the cutest one. That really is amazing. I actually just got a text from the company. You don't have bedbugs. You do have scorpions. No. Sorry. Maximum fun.org slash join.
Starting point is 00:06:52 That's really metal though. Yeah. To have a house full of scorpions? Have you guys? I've never even seen a scorpion in the wild and now I will. I think I have it. It was awful, awful to see. It's the scariest looking.
Starting point is 00:07:04 It's the scariest animal. Where did you see the scorpion? Like in the high desert like Palm Springs area. I don't like that. I don't like that crawling around out there. How big was it? It was, I would say it's like three spiders big. No, that's too big.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Yeah. That's too big. I mean, there is a scorpion. Daddy long legs? Just like your standard toilet spider. Oh, God. Now, there is a scorpion, like, little moment in this movie where they're setting stuff up on a rock, and there's just a scorpion there and nobody's giving a shit.
Starting point is 00:07:38 Oh, maybe I missed the scorpion. I was like, did that they put a fake scorpion there for good luck? What was that? It made no sense. I guess we'll never know. I mean, a lot of this movie is. I guess we'll never know. Sure.
Starting point is 00:07:52 That's fair. Yeah, this movie has a lot of stuff in it. Sure does. Sense is not one of the things. Making sense. Yeah, or plot. Or plot.
Starting point is 00:08:01 I mean, though, what are I? Or good accents of any kind. It does have a lot of accents. A lot of accents. It has a lot of accents. It's an extravaganza of accents. It's everything must go, door-busters sale accents.
Starting point is 00:08:15 I love it. I love it. It's like a high school play set in England. You know, it's really... Everybody's doing something different. Yeah, one guy's Cockney, the other guy's from London. There's a guy doing a Fosse in the background for some reason. I really love, especially nowadays.
Starting point is 00:08:33 Nowadays, you know, I really love that in this movie, they give... What's his name? Ernie Hudson. They give Ernie Hudson the part of a Black British man, which I love because nowadays it's really unfair. how many black British people play Americans. Oh, I mean, Idriselba. Idriselba has a whole fucking career of being compelling despite not being great at having an American accent. Right.
Starting point is 00:09:00 And this is true of like tons of a lot of black actors in Hollywood are British. And, you know, there's some friction there. But it's nice to see that in the 90s they were giving black British guy roles to the dude from Ghostbusters. That makes me happy. And he's his voice. He's really doing a voice. I feel like Matt Barry watched this movie and it's like, this is what I'll do for an entire career.
Starting point is 00:09:31 I feel like Ernie just watched the Grey Poupon commercial and went, I got it. Yeah, I got it. I've never been. But I get it. Well, yeah, let's check in about this. I have a couple of big memories involving this movie. Did you all see this in theaters? Is this something you were familiar with?
Starting point is 00:09:49 Not in theaters. Okay. You've seen it before. Rental. Like, I think we rented it when I was a kid and I watched it with friends and it scared the fucking shit out of me. Yeah. Yeah. I saw this in theaters.
Starting point is 00:10:02 I believe it came out after Jurassic Park. Am I right about that? So I think what this was, this was very, I think this was very hastily shot to capitalize off Jurassic Parks. Because it was also Michael Crichton. Yes. Michael Crichton, the author of Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park also wrote this. And I think a lot of his movies, they're just like, go, go, go, go, make it, make it, make it.
Starting point is 00:10:22 It's not dinosaurs. People care about. It's not the dinosaurs. It's not dinosaurs. There's a crossover with Jurassic Park in Congo? No, I don't know. I don't think so. I remember I've read both of these books as a kid.
Starting point is 00:10:35 I read all the Crichtons. I did. Atrometer strain. The sphere. Yeah, sphere is great. Well, what I was noticing about, okay, so Congo, not to jump ahead too much, but that, you know, Jurassic Park is about like, man. kind of, you know, playing God or...
Starting point is 00:10:50 And this is more like man trying to play God with mentally like, I don't know, manipulating animals to their whims and it going wrong. So I'm like, this feels like it's connected. I don't know. It feels like it could be. Thematically, there's a lot of similar themes to Jurassic Park. And I realize this, we... Maybe this is on purpose, but every single animals attack August movie that we do,
Starting point is 00:11:17 do, I've now realized the real monster is the humans every single time. What? What? We say it as a joke. But I'm starting to think that this is always going to be the case. There's never going to be an animal attack movie where the real monster is the animal who's attacking. I'd like to see that movie.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Yeah, I want to see that movie too. I wonder, like, give us some suggestions. I'm interesting. Yeah. Give me a like a... Where man is good and it's just an animal fucking everybody up. Right. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:11:52 The gray was kind of like, fuck these wolves. Yeah, but there was something. I think with that one, the real monster was God, I believe. That's actually the truth. If you haven't listed to our episode about The Grey, it was we really had a time with that movie. We were going through it talking about that movie. That movie was, I never want to watch it again. Neither do I want to watch this again, by the way.
Starting point is 00:12:16 For different reasons. For different reasons. Very different reasons. Both of them about how I feel about God, though. Right. I feel a different way about God after watching this. Well, when I first saw this one, I remember being a bit confused. And not a lot has changed since I've rewatched it.
Starting point is 00:12:34 I'll say that much. What about you, Jordan? I have a very special memory involving this movie. You know, going to see it again. Huge, huge little Crichton guy. So I'm like, get me to the theater. but also it had a piece of merch. I am putting it in the chat right now.
Starting point is 00:12:49 Oh my God, merch. It is the Congo watch from Taco Bell. What? And it works? It worked. I wore it to school. This was my watch for several years. Wow.
Starting point is 00:13:01 A digital watch. All I can see is the box, though. You can get a set of seven of them on eBay for $75, apparently. It's not terrible. It's not terrible. The box is. are really cool. The boxes are very cool, very collectible. Yeah, this is when you could get Taco Bell collectible watches. And there was also a demolition man one. Yeah. Oh, shit. I bet there's a
Starting point is 00:13:26 demolition man one. For sure. There was a Taco Bell rapper in this movie at some point. I saw the old Taco Bell logo and it literally made my mouth start watering because I just remember. The old Taco Bell logo is cool. I don't know what it was, but it was just like, it reminded me of and the turquoise kind of thing. Yeah, but also the font. It just reminded me how much I used to love Taco Bell. How much you used to live moss. Oh, but now I don't live any moss.
Starting point is 00:13:53 No, me neither. Ever since, you know, the lettuce started giving people the explosive diarrhea. Oh, that's right. As of this recording, the Hot News story is Taco Bell Diarrhea lettuce. Yeah. But it wasn't them. It's the, well, and who knows who it is because now they're lying about it. Amy squirts.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Amy squirts. That's what Amy does when she is. The funny thing I was thinking about is like, so the farm, Taylor Farms that this is allegedly like caused by, you know, they give their, their produce to a lot of different major chains. It's just Taco Bell was the one that got caught for all of it. And I'm like, were they always the ones with the produce? And is that what was giving us all diarrhea for the past 30 years? Yeah, I know. Was it just them the whole time?
Starting point is 00:14:39 I do love that people are all of a sudden being like, oh no, no. Now you can get diarrhea from Taco Bell. And I was like, diarrhea has always been on the menu. And I think it's because of Taylor Farms. Right. It just wasn't the lettuce before doing it. It wasn't the lettuce before it was the other ingredients. Or the like 20 fire sauces I put on a single chalupa.
Starting point is 00:15:00 And how you're drunk when you're eating it. Not you, Matt. Not me, but you know, I'm drunk on power. I don't know. I've actually never had diarrhea from Taco Bell, but I have had it for many other fast food experiences. Okay. But not Taco Bell. Case and point.
Starting point is 00:15:15 I don't really get diarrhea. Case O point. Case O point, yes. Oh, very good. Congo time. Congo, let's talk about it. It starts out in, yeah, you guessed it, the jungle. We got a bunch of guys hiking up to somewhere,
Starting point is 00:15:32 and they're sending transmissions back to a headquarters, but their transmissions are being intercepted by chief communication scientist, Laura Lennie. Again, this movie just, they wanted to be as much like Jurassic Park as possible. They're like, just get us a Laura who looks good and khaki.
Starting point is 00:15:50 They sure did. Is there a blonde Laura who looks great and khaki and you know what she fucking does? She's fucking great. Anytime I see Laura Lenny and stuffing, something I go, this is going to be some quality acting, even if it's a piece of shit dog shit movie.
Starting point is 00:16:04 And so Laura Linney, she is doing some very sophisticated satellite transmissions with Bruce Campbell, who's some sort of volcano adventure guy. I think he's the tallest person in the movie, famously tall Bruce Campbell. Oh, he is? Tallest guy.
Starting point is 00:16:21 Hell yeah. And so he is, he's on some sort of quest to get a, by the way, how have we been doing this fucking podcast for 110 episodes or whatever? And this is the first time Bruce Campbell has showed up in something. Yeah, that is weird. What's that movie? where he's supposed to be Elvis in a nursing home? Babah Hotep.
Starting point is 00:16:44 We got to, I've never watched that, and everybody talked about it all the fucking time of college, so I got to watch that. It's a big dorm movie, Boba Hopap. Yeah, maybe we'll do, you know, Elvis, Elvis September. Sure. All Elvis movies. Oh, man, I wish there was a month that started with B.
Starting point is 00:17:03 We could do a Bruce kind of thing. That's too bad. There's just not a month. I'm sorry. But yeah, Bruce Campbell. Brew Library month. Brew Library. Yeah, there you go.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Fred Bruce Larry. Fred Bruce Larry, yes. We'll understand what that is. It'll track for everybody. All that. Bruce Campbell, he's looking for diamonds for a laser. And not only, so he's looking for diamonds and they give him, they give him the laser to take with him. So he can test the diamonds to make sure they're the right diamonds that power the laser.
Starting point is 00:17:38 Yeah. So he did it. He found the diamonds. Are we supposed to believe that the laser, that the diamond is responsible for the power of the laser? I think so. Is this not unlike the Khyber crystal in Star Wars? I think similar principle, yes.
Starting point is 00:17:54 Cool. We do have a sting for like movie tech, don't we? That we haven't used to. Oh, are you talking about fake film tech? There you go. I think this laser thing is some of the best fake movie. I love it. So he's got a little weiner assistant guy
Starting point is 00:18:12 who asks him to go swimming with him in an underground cave. He just fucking does it without taking off any clothes or asking the guy where the cave goes. But they'll pop up in a beautiful underground temple. Bruce Campbell sits down to eat a very product-placed Hershey bar. And then he thinks his assistant's throwing stuff at him. But it's an eyeball.
Starting point is 00:18:34 Something's ripped out this guy's eye. Pretty gory for a PG-13 movie. This scared the shit out of me. Very scary. So yeah, he gets hit with an eyeball. And then, you know, something bad happens, but we don't know what became of Bruce Campbell. Because Laura Linney's surveillance stuff gets knocked over by something. Something knocked it over.
Starting point is 00:18:56 What is it? Ooh, will we find out. Yes, we will later in the movie. We will. And you'll guess correctly what it is. Yeah, it's grilless. It's grillis. It's grillist because it's a grill movie.
Starting point is 00:19:06 So the Laura Lennie. calls in the boss of the boss of the company, the big money fucking fat cat. Joe Don Baker, everybody in this is someone you like. Joe Don Baker rolls up and you know he's a big money asshole because
Starting point is 00:19:21 he pulls up to the office with his golf club. He was golfing and he just brought the club with him because he's that much of a fucking fat cat asshole. It's crazy. It's a crazy move. Like are we supposed to believe that that he
Starting point is 00:19:37 forgot he was holding it because I've done that with like Chalula like one time I was just I walked into my room with a bottle of Chalula and my wife was like why and I said I forgot I had it and so maybe that's what was going on
Starting point is 00:19:54 that's just yeah that's Joe Don Baker with the golf club probably I think that people like us all three of us who have well Chilula is the poor man's golf club you can't remember stuff good and you can't focus very good Yeah, we've all got that.
Starting point is 00:20:08 But we shouldn't be hired to do any laser diamonding. Don't have me put a laser in a diamond. We're right where we should be. God, no. So, yeah, so they're wondering what happened to Bruce Campbell. Jodon Baker, they, so someone suggests that it was guerrillas. And Jodon Baker says something that people say throughout this movie constantly, and I don't think this is true, is that guerrillas don't attack people.
Starting point is 00:20:35 I think they do. That's a big, I don't, am I, listen, I'm no jungle scientist, but I think that guerrillas will, they are, they are a threat. Well, here's the thing. They prove that they do because our main, like, you know, gorilla scientists is getting charged upon by a gorilla and they go, don't run. They will chase you. Yeah. And so he knew, he read a book saying they will come kill you. So he completely contradicted the whole fucking thing.
Starting point is 00:21:04 I could see people saying, like, it's really. rare that they attack or they only attack when they're provoked. But people in this movie are constantly saying that gorillas don't attack and like why they don't believe it's guerrillas. It's rare that they attack in this way where they remove eyes. So many ways around this other than saying gorilla anyway. Yeah. This like absolute like gorillas never do that.
Starting point is 00:21:26 They're physically incapable of her. It's not even we know gorilla anyway. It's not even that it's lazy. It's just that it's careless. Like there's so many things in this movie. where they're having fun, you know. And there's things like that that are so easy to correct. We also were about to watch a movie where the trailer points out that it's going to be
Starting point is 00:21:47 guerrillas attacking humans. So we're kind of just like, okay. Like, what is this for? Who, who in, like, there was part of me that was like, oh, okay, so what they're doing is they're fighting against what they call the King Kong stereotype of guerrillas as like brutes or whatever. But I'm like, yeah, but, yeah. you know, who needs this?
Starting point is 00:22:09 No one needs this. I don't know. It's so, makes you think they shouldn't have killed Harambe if this is like, if this was the truth. Like somebody watched Congo and then they were working at the zoo and that was the problem. I blame you, Congo, you are the reason for Harambe's death. While we're talking about the writing in this movie,
Starting point is 00:22:27 writing by John Patrick Shanley, who wrote Moonstruck, also wrote this movie. Okay, okay. Well, see, I was right about Moonstruck then. that movie also wrong about gorillas that's right that's right I had some bad ideas about gorillas are you kidding?
Starting point is 00:22:42 No yeah it's a real thing I'm not caught My heart is broken She's crying She is crying It's okay Nick Cage should have been in this It would have fixed everything
Starting point is 00:22:53 Oh my God absolutely His acting would have looked normal Like it was just like Oh everyone will just act like Everyone's acting is so big in this That's kind of something I liked about it Except for The people in the gorilla suits
Starting point is 00:23:05 That's true. They really just like our little gorilla Amy, who we follow around, who Kentucky just like moves around like a tween girl who's bummed her mom didn't let her get her belly button pierced. I love it though. Amy. Amy is so cute.
Starting point is 00:23:21 But yeah. It's gorilla. Yeah, not a lot of mobility in the suits, maybe. These are all practical girls. There's certainly no Andy Circus. No Andy circus.
Starting point is 00:23:30 No, there isn't. So yes, we cut to a dorm room in Berkeley. Yeah, Taco Bell scattered around. You got that great old Taco Bell logo. Somebody's playing Doom on a PC. Oh, we love it.
Starting point is 00:23:43 That was cutting edge at the time. I can't believe they showed Doom. And in this dorm room is a scientist guy and his dumb buddy, and they are teaching Amy the gorilla to paint. She's doing a bunch of painting. Those will come back later. They bring in Amy to talk to a class. Who doesn't know a gorilla's coming in.
Starting point is 00:24:04 and they just bring her in and they've hooked her up to and she gives them flowers anyway the professor goes look to your left look to your right one of these people
Starting point is 00:24:16 is a gorilla and Amy has been rigged up to a Nintendo power glove that reads her sign language in a little speak and spell voice it's very cute and she just says Amy pretty Amy gorilla
Starting point is 00:24:31 doesn't say it's just seems like technology that people who use sign language should have. Like all people. Why are we hooking it up to just a gorilla? I don't know. Yeah. That is kind of weird to have fake film tech only for gorillas to talk to people. Right.
Starting point is 00:24:47 I know their first thing is like, oh, let's not like help people who have speech problems communicate. It's all it's like, we have to give it to the guerrillas. Yeah. We have to know what they're thinking about. Laser diamonds. Which I'm like he's already talking to you in sign language. Like he's already doing it. Right.
Starting point is 00:25:02 So this like speaker box thing is. is so amazing. Meanwhile, we got, like, diamond laser, like machines, which are way more
Starting point is 00:25:08 impressive. Let's be cool. Yeah, that's true. Uh, so watching this presentation, Tim fucking Curry, again,
Starting point is 00:25:14 how have we not had Tim Curry appear until now in one of our movies? I feel like he was in something. You know, we watched Fern Gully for the live stream. Okay, okay,
Starting point is 00:25:24 that's something. That's something. That's right. Tim Curry. This is the only movie where I'm like, oh, no, Tim Curry.
Starting point is 00:25:30 And he, okay, so he's, he's fiddling with a little, little ancient book and a little ancient trinket bobble and
Starting point is 00:25:39 we see him a little bit later he comes up to our main guy in the quad and he is doing a Romanes. He's from Romania and I am like I don't remember this movie this has to be a fake accent the character is putting on because it's
Starting point is 00:25:56 so crazy but it's not that is him being deadly serious. That is what this guy talks like It sounds like it hurts how hard he's trying with this accent. I know. It's like a 70s SNL sketch. But it's not working.
Starting point is 00:26:11 At one point, I wrote down... He's doing the... I wrote down a time code where I died laughing because he just went, this must lead to the minds. Yeah. Fuck is that Christopher Walkins? Maybe Tim Curry thought it wasn't being filmed and it was a cartoon. And he was doing...
Starting point is 00:26:27 He's like, well, you have to do cartoon voice little bigger. Cartoon voice very big, very... expressive carton. He's like, no, no, we're filming you. It's like live action. It's like he got, I'm like fairly certain that he later booked being a character in command and conquer Red Alert 3 because of this role. Have you guys ever heard his?
Starting point is 00:26:52 No. It's amazing, dude. Here is, here's just one clip of Tim Curry doing his Russian accent. So maybe I'll set this up. This is a CD-ROM video game. And it was huge at the time. the time because it had actual actors in it, which was not something that happened a lot. They, like, had actual film of big time actors, including Tim Curry.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Go ahead. Okay. Here it is. I'm escaping to the one place that hasn't been corrupted by capitalism. Wow. And if you see the actual video, he's like, he almost breaks. It's so funny. What am I doing?
Starting point is 00:27:37 So yeah, he commits to a like, he committed to this, but I think, you know, we talk a lot about people who know what movie they're in. I'd say Laura Linney knows what she's trying to do, what the movie's trying to do, but not what the movie is. And then Tim Curry is often another stratosphere. It's like, I don't know, makes no damn sense. Yeah. So Tim Curry offers them money for the expedition. And then Laura Linney offers them more money to buy the gas that Tim Curry can't buy for some reason. It's very unclear why all these people are going on this expedition together.
Starting point is 00:28:09 Why is he with them? I'm like, I don't get it. Yeah, I guess, like, Laura Liddy had to find the diamonds in Bruce Campbell, who's like, we learn as like her ex-fiance, which doesn't matter or go anywhere. Yeah, just make it your fiance. I know. It's weird how it's, anyway. I think it's to keep it her sexually available for our protagonist.
Starting point is 00:28:32 You're okay. Absolutely fucking right. And that doesn't go anywhere. It goes nowhere. so it was useless. It does make her a cool girl, though, somehow. It does make her. She's like knows how to do everything.
Starting point is 00:28:43 She knows how to be in the jungle. She's not afraid of shit. She's super smart. And she don't need no man. She doesn't need no man to kill gorillas with lasers. That's right. That's right. She can have it all.
Starting point is 00:28:57 That's right. The job. The car. The laser. The lair. Good hair. Good head of hair. She's great in this.
Starting point is 00:29:06 So yeah, so they get on the plane. Amy is immediately aggressive toward Laura Linney, calls her ugly woman. There's an egg at her. That's pretty funny. And then the guy also hates Laura Linney for basically no reason. She's like, she's like, I'm in communication. She's like, oh, so you're just a geek with a cell phone. Fucking huge burn back in 1995 or whenever.
Starting point is 00:29:26 You're a geek with a gorilla who has a fucking glove on it. Yeah, you have a robot gorilla who's talking. Yeah, what do you do? Who's the big geek? If Amy gets a martini on the plane, that's really cute. She burps. That's funny. Like, Amy is, they're basically Judy Garlanding, this monkey for the whole movie.
Starting point is 00:29:45 They give it, like, sedatives in a banana, a cigar. Yeah, alcohol. Fucking cocktail. Yeah, doesn't Amy drink a martini at some point? Yeah. Yeah. It just happened on the plane. Yeah, she does a big burp.
Starting point is 00:29:58 But then the cigar and stuff happens. And then, like, getting high with the banana. And you're just like, God, this, is this supposed to be cute that this? We're creating a, I don't know, a drug addict gorilla. Yes. I watched the, like, trailer for this. Just, you know, the trailers on YouTube. And, like, they really try and sell it as a horror movie.
Starting point is 00:30:20 Yeah. And just have all the, like, guerrilla stuff. And the poster is just these, like, eyes kind of coming out of the jungle. But, like, the first part is kind of a kid's movie. It's a really, like, wacky. They didn't know what they're doing. Yeah. You know, some people thought it was a kid's movie and some people thought it was a
Starting point is 00:30:36 Was it PG-13? It was PG-13, despite the eyeball and couple of coming out. Good, because it was scary. Yeah, like the first 10 minutes is like something scary happens. And then you get about 45 minutes to an hour of that Ronald Reagan monkey movie. Yes. And, you know, you get a little bit of like action going on. They, you know, get to where they're going.
Starting point is 00:30:58 They're trying to get to or they're flying to Zaire. And there's a revolution that breaks out. and whatnot. But it's like even beyond the, you know, gunfire, it's still like a cute monkey movie. Yeah. It's fine. I liked it. In fact, I was like, can we keep this vibe gone? I like, I just want to see Amy talk. I don't want to look at that monkey ever again. You didn't like the monkey. I love the monkey. It doesn't look practical. It looks like a person in a suit. I'm not fucking falling for it. An adorable person in a suit. No. And it doesn't somehow the, the, I don't, I don't. I don't. No, the physicality of it. I was like, that's a monkey. That's a real gorilla.
Starting point is 00:31:39 You kind of see that whoever's in it is on stilts because her like arms bend in weird ways. Yeah, that's true. Her elbows kind of jet out. It just looks like my friend Katie got a mask at the Halloween town and is like sitting there going, what's up. It didn't look very. I thought she had gorgeous soulful eyes.
Starting point is 00:31:56 Well, that's the thing. Beautiful eyes. It was a little bit I'm the baby, not the mama like kind of vibes to it. That's true, a little bit. So it didn't. These are all pros, by the way. that's the issue with for me sometimes with both practical effects and CGI is if it is something that we see in normal life often it's harder to make it
Starting point is 00:32:15 look real like a dinosaur none of us have seen a dinosaur in real life so when you see it you go wow that must be a dinosaur or if it's an alien or a monster but when it's a real thing that you've seen in real life it doesn't work the uncanny value just doesn't I don't yeah yeah yeah yeah I need a fucking monkey give me a monkey in a movie Should have trained a monkey, put a little robot glove on it. Yeah, let it talk. You know, they're physically- It's physically impossible for a gorilla to hurt a human, so.
Starting point is 00:32:42 That's true. As we've learned from this movie, guerrillas never hurt anyone, and it has to be something else doing this. Anyway, yeah, there's a bunch of, the middle of this movie is just random stuff happening. Yeah, they pick up Ernie Hudson, who is like their guide. He's doing the, like, crazy British guy voice.
Starting point is 00:33:01 And I think his fucking. great. Like he, like Ernie Hudson works. Like we all, this guy pops up and stuff. I'm like, oh, wow. I wonder if this movie hadn't sucked if he would have been like a bigger leading man than he was. Anyway. I don't know. I think he kept working, didn't he? Oh, yeah. Sure. Ernie Hudson. Nobody's worried about him. He's out there. But it's like he wasn't a, you know, he wasn't a star. It wasn't above the, you know, above the title. I mean, could we throw in his name for the next James Bond? I mean, he's British now. He is British as we, according to this movie. That's right.
Starting point is 00:33:33 A flawless British accent. No one will be bad if Ernie Hudson is the next James Bond. No one will be angry about that. So yeah, Del Rey Lindo has a little scene. He's pretty funny. He's doing a big crazy voice too. He's like telling people not to eat his cake. It's a pretty good scene.
Starting point is 00:33:49 Also Joey Potts is in this. Which one is he? I guess I don't know who that is. Joe Pantalonis. What's his name? Isn't he the one from the Matrix? From the matrix. He's at the very beginning and then you don't see him again.
Starting point is 00:34:01 Pantoliano. He's, yeah, he's the one who's driving them. He plays the driver at the airport. Oh, he's got a little accent. He's like a sleazy guy. He's like a sleazy New York guy. He's like, oh, here's some line where it's like, when he's talking about how much he could sell Amy for.
Starting point is 00:34:16 He's like, you could get $20 million for that gorilla. He's like, oh, the woo-woo hairs are standing up on my neck. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was great. I was like. Oh, no. Okay. He's like, the money hairs on my neck are going woo, woo, woo, woo.
Starting point is 00:34:28 But he said 25,000. And I was like, bra. Not enough. I mean, maybe that was probably a lot of money in the 90s, though. That's true. I mean, not enough to. And again, just like it being a weird kids movie, that his, that guy is from home alone. Right.
Starting point is 00:34:45 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, you can't be home alone, Kevin. I'm going woo, woo, woo, because you're home alone too much. Yeah. Maybe that's what the plan was, like this movie is going to be scary, but we want all age groups to come. So we'll get some of the most caricature. Over the top, like, accents going and Tim Curry to make kids go see it like they did Jurassic Park. Because I saw, I think Jurassic Park was my first PG-13 movie and I was like seven.
Starting point is 00:35:13 Dude, is Jurassic Park PG-13? Yeah. Yo. That's crazy. And that opening scene in that movie. Lock that. Still haunts me to this day. I still think about that.
Starting point is 00:35:24 And this one, the eyeball did stick with me a little bit, but nowhere near as scary. But it was like, I don't know. I was still very scared of this movie because of how ugly the mean guerrillas are. They're pretty, yeah, the mean gorillas are pretty striking. Terrify. So, yeah, so they're going through the jungle, just doing a bunch of random stuff that really doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:35:45 They're in a plane that's somebody shooting missiles at the plane. And then Laura Linnie is shooting the missiles out of the sky with flares. Again, she's hyper-competent. She can do it all. She's Tomb Raider, baby. Yeah, I know. Yeah, she was Tomb Raider before Tomb Raider. That's right.
Starting point is 00:36:02 So, yeah. So then they just go on a little, they go on a jungle adventure. They finally find, so Tim Curry, we learn, has been like in the jungle for a long time looking for this lost city. He's looking for a lost city, Solomon's Minds that, you know, everybody says is a myth, but he says it's real. And he thinks he has jumped to the insane conclusion that turns out to be real because it's a movie. but his conclusion is that the paintings Amy does are of an eye that is above the temple. So he deduces that Amy has been to the temple
Starting point is 00:36:38 and they just need to follow her because no other art is of the human eye. Yeah, it's really. No sculpture has ever depicted the human eye in this history. It's the first thing like a goth middle school girl learns how to draw. And I know that because I was that. That's right.
Starting point is 00:36:56 That's you. It's the first thing I learned to draw. Anybody can draw a fucking eye. I like that in your mind, Emily. It's possible that Amy the gorilla is a gophe. Oh, yes. I told you her movements are just like a tween who is from making it get their belly button pierce. And she gets jealous of Laura Linney for being blonde.
Starting point is 00:37:17 She's like, ugly woman. Ugly woman. Clove, cigarette. Amy, clove, cigarette. She did basically smoke a little like blunt at one point. On nightmare before Christmas. for Amy. Amy love Coralide.
Starting point is 00:37:32 Put Amy in Tim Burton movie. Shut up, Amy. Amy, love Helena, Bonham, Carter. So, yeah, but because it's a movie, that thing is just totally true. Amy has been to the temple. That's why she was drawing an eye. Oh, the eye was also one of the designs
Starting point is 00:37:55 on the Taco Bell watches. you could get an eye. All that rules. So there were multiple designs? There were. There's two of them, I believe. So wait. So that package that we can get for $75 for five different ones, we don't know which ones we're getting.
Starting point is 00:38:08 We do not. No. It could be a blind box. Should we pull our money and buy that? At the very least, I should get Taco Bell today. That's true. Why don't we all see how much Taco Bell we can get for $75. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:20 Oh, not that much. I'll tell you right now, not that much. It is crazy how expensive Taco Bell. is. Thanks Biden. Well, that's only if you get the can'tina menu or whatever, which is the best stuff. That's if you get any of the, like, you know, any where you go, I like a number, whatever, it's going to be
Starting point is 00:38:36 very little food and, and what you got to do is you got to get a $5 box and then you got to go to the dollar menu and really load up there. That's just a little Taco Bell tip for you. But if I only want the canteena, casea dia. Well, then you're fucked. $40.
Starting point is 00:38:52 $40. It's the best, though. Have you been to the cantinas that are in L.A? There's one in Hollywood that is very sad. These are the Taco Bells that have like bars. It's like a full bar. Yeah. And they have like a slightly different menu. I don't know if all Taco Bells have the canteena menu.
Starting point is 00:39:08 No, not all of them have the full canteena menu. The can't even though. It's pretty lit. It's pretty good. In Vegas, you can get married at one of those. I know. I go there all the time hoping that I will see someone getting married. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:22 And instead, I've just gotten really sick. And just pelt them with hot sauce packets as they're coming out. I've just gotten really sick with one of those giant Because you can in Vegas you can walk around with alcohol And they have that huge like Baja blast plastic Oh yeah sure Like tube thing you can carry around And you get a bunch of shots of stuff in it
Starting point is 00:39:40 And yes I have puked blue green Okay So you've never gotten sick from Taco Bell food But you have gotten sick from the canteen drinks Just wanted to make sure Yes that is 100% true It came out the other end Not the back end
Starting point is 00:39:55 Nice So, yeah, so they finally, you know, Amy's going to the temple. They find the temple. It's where Bruce Campbell died. There's this, say they set up camp. They don't go inside it immediately for, I don't know, who cares. They just do stuff. They set up camp and they set up these like turret guns, these like remote control turret guns.
Starting point is 00:40:19 And Ernie Hudson doesn't seem to tell anyone about it. They're surprised when the machine guns start going off. Maybe tell people. maybe tell everybody there's, you know, trip wire machine guns that can shoot anything that moves, I don't know. You'd figure. Yeah, there's that.
Starting point is 00:40:33 And then should we mention there's like a volcano thing happening to? There's also a volcano, yeah. Yeah. They're just like, we need a ticking clock. Yeah. They really packed it full of bullshit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:44 And there's a, and just while the machine gun scene is happening, they have all these like ways of tracking the bad guerrillas. So they're getting attacked by something. It's a bad gorilla. But they have like all these, like lights and lasers that go off
Starting point is 00:40:57 looks fucking cool. It looks like a little rave in their camp while their machine gunning down all these bad guerrillas. That was kind of cool. It looked great. But they finally go in. They learn via hieroglyphics that are very clear
Starting point is 00:41:12 that the people who used to keep this diamond mind kind of trained these evil guerrillas to be aggressive because that's the only way a gorilla would be aggressive. Right, exactly. Is there generations of selective breeding. Yes, it was a human interference that did it, not actual guerrillas who would never, ever harm a little hair on a human's head.
Starting point is 00:41:39 Never. I looked it up, by the way. And maybe we'll take a break and I'll give you the answer to whether or not guerrillas can hurt humans. Oh, yeah, let's do this. Yeah, let's take a break because I got to refill my water bottle. I'm getting too excited about the gorilla. And then we'll learn whether or not gorillas can hurt humans if they're not albino mutants right after this. We're back.
Starting point is 00:42:24 It's free with ads. We're talking about Congo. Matt Lieb has gotten the information we all crave. Can gorillas hurt humans if they're not mutants? We're all going to kind of look like idiots here because according to a new experience. Hooray. Google's. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:42:42 Shocking new experience for all of us. According to Google using AI and burning a bunch of water down for no reason, the AI overview says, Gorillers are mostly peaceful. They are shy herbivores that don't hurt humans, period. And I say period. They put down a period there. It's a punctuation. It's an important to note that they were pretty emphatic about.
Starting point is 00:43:14 about, they don't hurt, oh, they don't hunt humans, excuse me. However, attacks can happen. They will aggressively charge or bite to defend their territory or families if threatened, surprised, or provoked by sudden movements, eye contact, or loud noises. Now, I just want to say, like, provoke. That seems like things humans do. I don't know. And the things people are doing in this movie.
Starting point is 00:43:41 Provoked by eye contact is a little weird to me because I'm just like. They ripped out the guy's eye. That's true. Oh, very good. They're like, no, these guys are very peaceful. Just don't look at them in the eye. Or make noise. Or be near where they live.
Starting point is 00:43:54 How do I know where they live? I'm just walking around this jungle that I conquered. And then they gave, this is just a little bit of like what to do if you encounter a gorilla. Oh, sure, yeah. Three bullet points. Back down. Don't run. If a silver back charges, crouch submissively, look down.
Starting point is 00:44:14 down and remain still. Running away often triggers their chase instinct. Uh, bullet point number two, avoid eye contact and pointing. Direct stairs and pointing gestures are interpreted as aggressive challenges. Look at that. A gorilla. Stay, that way. Stay quiet and low. Never scream, imitate chest beating or show your teeth. I love that there was someone out there who tried the imitation chest beating. I'll show this. guy who can beat his chest. Yeah. I was like,
Starting point is 00:44:46 what if I do it too? My hand would beat into space. Yeah. Too bouncy on my chest. That's great. Anyways. So, just before we get to the finale,
Starting point is 00:44:57 just a stray thing that I ran past. At some point, hippos attack them. Oh, yeah. There's a scary scene. Pretty scary. That was really scary. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:05 And I was watching this with the subtitles. And you know, the subtitles will often just tell you what someone is yelling, like what the extras are yelling. Sure. And subtitles told me someone in the background yelled, I knew this would happen.
Starting point is 00:45:20 I knew it. I knew it would be attacked by hippos. This always happens to me. I knew it. Not again. They don't think maybe the people they're looking for got attacked by this fucking hippo. Maybe it was that if guerrillas never attacked. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:45:33 No one ever says hippos until. My other favorite thing is they do, Amy the gorilla does encounter other gorillas like her. like her. And then she's wearing a backpack as if to go, I'm going to guerrilla school, Papa. And, like, then Terns uses the words on the thing to talk to them. And they just turn around and walk away. I know. I felt awful for her.
Starting point is 00:45:57 I didn't because it doesn't look like a gorilla. And I think it sucks. No, when that happened, I was like, that's me when I make a joke in the group chat. That's right. Oh, God. That's so much. Your little backpack. My little backpacks.
Starting point is 00:46:11 And a little power glove that I wear everywhere. Jordan funny. Make joke. Post meme in text. Thumbs up, meme, please. Thumbs up, meme. Heart meme. So, okay, they find the mine.
Starting point is 00:46:27 It's guarded by all these like, you know, kind of albino zombie mutant gorillas who look pretty cool, look pretty fucked up. They're pretty scary. They are really scary. Like, there's, are they albinos? Is that confirmed? Or are they just old? Like old?
Starting point is 00:46:43 It's hard thing. Yeah, great question. Yeah, they look as the kids would say, chopped. Chopped? Chopped unks. There's a lot of chopped unks in gorillas. I thought as a kid when I saw it, because I guess the images of them with like kind of syphiletic sores like around their nose and stuff. And the fur is gray.
Starting point is 00:47:02 It's like a gray, but they almost look like they're emaciated into skeleton form. So it looks like there's a supernatural kind of element to them. being at this ancient site where ancient people trained them to guard their diamonds and I'm like, you don't see any young ones but it's like all dusty old gorillas. Yeah, dusty old gorillas. Yes.
Starting point is 00:47:27 It's like I want to see Rush at the Hollywood Bowl. Guys with facial sores. I'm happy. That's gorillas. Oh, that's gorillas. I know, but I'm saying, dusty old gorillas. You know what?
Starting point is 00:47:42 You're right. Yeah. It'll be the last concert we see. Flimsy Steve. Yeah. So the dusty old guerrillas start fucking everybody up. And then Amy runs in. She was like hanging out with the real gorillas.
Starting point is 00:47:58 And she like, she goes to like hug her dad. And the other, that for some reason stops the bad guerrillas. And Ernie Hudson's like, oh yeah, maternal instincts are a bitch or something. something like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we learned, like, the power of love. I thought it was the talky thing that was throwing him off. Oh, maybe, yeah, but she like hugs him.
Starting point is 00:48:20 She hugs him. And then I thought we were supposed to, yeah, think that it was because they were like, all right, well, don't beat him. It's her kid. Yeah, she's like, mom, mother, Amy, mother. And then, so we have this little lesson about love being more powerful than violence. Yeah. Interrupted by Laura Liddy, taking the diamond label.
Starting point is 00:48:40 Is there, just fucking mowing them all down. Just laser slicing them in half. This was amazing. Yeah, that was pretty sick. This was the best part. And then the volcano erupts. Good. And then, so they're all, all the bad guerrillas are, I think what it's supposed to look like is them jumping away from explosions.
Starting point is 00:49:02 But it just looks like they're diving in the lava voluntarily. Yes. Yes, it does. You know, when I was watching this, because it's, it's like, you know, rough CGI. kind of thing going on. It kind of reminded me of the screensaver of the like toasters with the wings. Oh yeah. And I was like, I want monkeys jumping into fire.
Starting point is 00:49:20 Like that's my screensaver. So relaxing. Yeah, please. Somebody makes this scene into a screen saver. Can anyone out there make screen savers? Yeah. How do people make screen savers? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:49:30 So, you know, they're basically done. They go outside. Laura Linney decides that Jonon Baker is NASA. So she uses the laser to blow up his satellite. I don't know how that. do. Right, but I also... She shoots it into space. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:44 She finds the coordinates. Right. Yeah. She shoots it into space. That does it. But of course, the diamonds are still there. Yeah. So he could at any point go there and take the diamonds. But the volcano sucked it all down, don't you think? I don't know. I felt like she did like an act of vandalism against him, but I was like, well, he's still got lots of money. He's probably going to kill you. I was also kind of interested when you go.
Starting point is 00:50:13 Also, Tim Curry's death in this is pretty brutal. That was the one that scared the shit out of me. I like that he just tries to walk away. With all these diamonds. Yeah, and he's just like, hello monkeys. Oh, no, to beat me to death. The weird thing is the diamonds are just huge diamonds resting gingerly in the sand. I know.
Starting point is 00:50:35 Diamonds are just sitting there. No one has to dig for them. I looked this up because I went, you know, As someone who loves jewelry, I don't know shit about diamonds. Diamonds really aren't my bag. But yes, diamonds are naturally found loose on the ground sometimes. This occurs when weathering and erosion released from their host rocks like volcanic dikes. So in volcano, I guess, vicinity, that does happen.
Starting point is 00:51:04 And I was like, is that the only scientific? So wait, this movie is good? No, I don't think so. Everything in the movie makes it. movie makes sense. It turns out they were right about everything. It's very rare. It's very rare.
Starting point is 00:51:14 But the thing is they say it's very rare unless in like volcanic, I get settings or whatever. But I just went, oh, well, that's kind of cool. I don't know. Well, there you go. You know, we goof on this movie, but it got some things right. It's basically over. Amy goes to live with the good guerrillas. They all go up in a hot air balloon that I guess they had the whole time.
Starting point is 00:51:37 She has like every single. She is go-go gadget. bond woman. Like, it's amazing. And then, uh, they do a fucking titanic ass move where she throws away the last diamond that she probably could have just used to sell and take down Joe. You think it was good.
Starting point is 00:51:53 Yeah, I think that the heart of the ocean, that was fucking insane. Okay. But this could be used to make lasers, I guess. Yeah, but they'll fuck those lasers then. Like, they were probably going to be used for bad things. They probably were. You're right. You're right.
Starting point is 00:52:06 They probably were. Um, all right. That's the movie of Congo that we watched. We're going to tell you what we thought about it, but first we got to do the Hunk Watch. It's Hunk Watch. Any big thoughts on the hunks of this film? For me, it was Ernie Hudson.
Starting point is 00:52:26 Yeah, he was hot. His acting is crazy, but it's really fun. I liked his bad British accent. And yeah, I thought he did a good job of being the leading man. He was hunky. It made me want to see him. him in that capacity as opposed to like the side character which he usually is. So yeah, Ernie Hudson, I thought it was great in this. Yeah, I think I'm going to go with Tim Curry because
Starting point is 00:52:48 I have to. Like I love Tim Curry so much and we haven't had him in something in his physical form on camera. And I just love seeing him doing his thing, even if it ain't quite right. Yeah. Even if it's not quite right. It's like, yeah, even in his bad movies, he's fun to watch. He's the most watchable human being on camera ever, like almost. I mean, I haven't done a complete ranking, but as of right now, that's what I believe. Okay. I'm going to give it to the lead guy. Okay.
Starting point is 00:53:21 What's his name? Niptuck. I was not familiar with this man. Neither was I. I was like, who's this guy? I'm sorry to this man, as the name would say. Yeah. He was in Nip Tuck.
Starting point is 00:53:30 That's the only thing I remember. Yeah, I mean, I've never seen Nip Tuck. It's skippable I truly I like don't know who he is And it was surprising to me Because I was like he's kind of hot I kind of like him
Starting point is 00:53:46 He's very handsome He's the lead in this fucking You know Huge big budget movie No idea who he is But I was like I like him What is he Dylan Walsh Is that him?
Starting point is 00:53:57 I don't know his name All I know is I've seen him in Niptuck And that's oh he's also the dad In heated rivalry Oh, I like that show. Yeah, he's the American dad of the, or the Canadian hockey player's dad. And yeah, so he's in that, oh yeah, he did rivalry, y'all, ooh.
Starting point is 00:54:16 I said that, that movie, that show's crazy. There's a lot of fucking in that. Oh, yeah, tons of it. And he's in it, and he's very good looking, and I want to change my answer. Okay. It's fucking Laura Linney. Lori Linney, yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:29 In some khaki, in some khaki. Like, she's a badass. a gadget for fucking everything. You know what? I want to change my answer. Okay. Amy the gorilla. Gross.
Starting point is 00:54:40 I love her. Yeah. Amy love Matt. That's right. Amy love tall man. Speak up Amy like baby. What would her wig like her glove sound like if she was jerking you off? It would sound awesome.
Starting point is 00:54:55 Whatever is sign language for that. Just rip my dick off. Not again. I knew this would happen. Amy Rip, face and genitals. Amy Love, rip off,
Starting point is 00:55:10 face and genitals. Yeah, that's my kink, luckily. Well, well, there you go. A match.
Starting point is 00:55:16 Can only have it once. You can only do it once. Well, that is the hunk watch portion of the show. We're going to tell you what we thought of the movie overall when we come back. We're back.
Starting point is 00:55:49 It's free with ads. We're talking about Congo. We're going to say what we thought about it on a scale of 1 to 10, but first we want to let you know you can listen to our bonus episodes entitled, We Like Shows. We like shows. This month, you can listen right now in your feed. Emily picked the pilot we were watching for this month. Emily, what did you pick?
Starting point is 00:56:14 I picked Yellowstone because people want to fight. And let's fight. You want to make sure my stepdad subscribes to the bonus episodes. That's right. I want everyone's opinion. I want everybody's opinion. Okay, so we're recording this in advance. We have not watched Yellowstone yet.
Starting point is 00:56:30 Emily, it was, sounds like it was kind of an aggressive pick on your part, a challenging pick. Okay. People give it a lot of shit. They do. And some people imply I'm a bad person for watching it and liking it. That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:56:42 That's crazy. It's a TV show. And you know what? Let's fucking rumble. Let's rumble. All right. So later this week, we're going to watch Yellowstone. We're going to record an episode about it.
Starting point is 00:56:53 We don't know what we thought. Emily knows what she thinks. Matt and I don't know. So if you want to hear the conversation about Yellowstone and all our bonus episodes, go to Maximumfun.org slash join. Regardless of what happens, it sounds like it's going to be spicy. We might not be friends after this. This might be the end of the podcast. This might be it.
Starting point is 00:57:14 The exciting series finale. I will just like Yellowstone so much. I bet it's good. I like Kevin Costner. Yeah. And I love Yellowstone. That is not anyone's complaint. Okay. All right. Coming, coming soon to a bonus feed near you. Right now, in fact, you can listen to it right now.
Starting point is 00:57:31 Listen to it right now.org slash join. All right. Let's go ahead and rank Congo on a scale of one to ten super loud commercials. I will go first. I think this is, as our buddies at the Flop House would say, I think this is a good, bad movie. It is a bad movie. I think it's pretty fun to watch. It's not like, you know, it ain't the room. It ain't Burdell. but it's kind of a hoot. It's got a bunch of actors you love. They're all doing something weird. It is a bad movie, but if you're looking for like a get stone and let's goof on something movie, I think it's a pretty good choice.
Starting point is 00:58:06 I'm going to give it a bad movie six. Wow. Okay. Anybody else want to go next? I'll go next. So this movie is something that I'd seen before, and I remember as a kid,
Starting point is 00:58:18 being severely disappointed because I was just so high on Jurassic Park. I thought, well, certainly this will be good as well. I mean, it's a gorilla.
Starting point is 00:58:30 Yeah. Seeing it now... Never been a bad guerrilla movie. It's never been a bad gorilla movie. Seeing it now, again, as an adult, for the second time ever,
Starting point is 00:58:38 I think I was right. It was a bad movie, but I was fairly entertained throughout. So I'm going to give it a five. I didn't hate it. I didn't find it unwatchable. It was a competently
Starting point is 00:58:52 made shitty movie that doesn't make sense. Emily, we'll let you take it home. I hated this movie more than a lot of movies we've watched. Wow, okay.
Starting point is 00:59:04 Fair, fair. Because here's a thing. It's bad. I mean, it's bad. It is bad, but I found it to be just so generically bad. Like, it treated, I feel like it treated the audience like they were stupid.
Starting point is 00:59:17 Like, oh, you know Michael Crichton, right? So you'll have to watch this. Right. And then there were just, The amount of, I don't know, lazy, plot-hull-y, weird things that were going on and the suit with the person in it trying to be a gorilla. All of them looked horrible. Like, one of those good gorillas that, Amy, I just got really Southern. This is how angry I am.
Starting point is 00:59:39 One of them good gorillas, you know. Good gorillas was up here. And it had a, it's like the mask was kind of wopper-jawed. Like, it was crooked on the person's face. And I was like, are you fucking kidding me? Man, he was more crooked than a fake gorilla mask. You might be in Congo. If your gorilla mask is crooked, you might be in Congo.
Starting point is 01:00:06 You might be a fake gorilla. If you're paying greenbacks for silverbacks, you might be in Congo. You might be in Congo. Stop. Here's your side. If you fuck up your point about the beauty of motherhood with a diamond-powered laser, he might be a gongo. That's right.
Starting point is 01:00:36 If you can't decide where your character is from. I'm sweating so much. Might be a gongo. Well, now I love it. I like it. I don't know. It's a good movie. I'm giving it a 3.5.
Starting point is 01:00:52 It's just, I don't want to watch it again. It's just bad. It's bad. Because to me, you know, okay, so I talk about the movie that's on in the background of a party a lot. Like, you know, movies that even if they suck, at least someone will go, oh, that's fun that it's on in the background of a party. It starts a conversation.
Starting point is 01:01:07 When you have to sit down and watch it for a podcast for work, it makes me want to die. Like I, on in the background, whatever, I wouldn't even pay attention to it then. I don't want a party to be cursed by this movie. Honestly, I'm giving it a 1.5. Sorry. Wow. Okay, you talk yourself down. Yeah. It's a bad movie. You don't have to like it. You guys made me laugh very hard though. And I have under tit sweat. Okay. All good. I'm glad. Thank you. You're welcome. Well, that wasn't the last time that animals would attack people because it's going to happen all month long here on free with ads. Keep it locked.
