Starting point is 00:00:28 This is free with ads, the podcast that asked a question, why pay Netflix nine bucks a month for a bunch of shark movies when you can go online for free and watch the greatest shark movie ever that's not called Jaws and doesn't involve any kind of NATO? I'm Jordan Morris. And I'm Emily Fleming. Today's movie is Deep Blue Sea, the shark horror movie that's also a beautiful love story between a man and a talking bird who's obsessed with butts. With us as always is the super producer, the he, The man whose hat is like a shark's fin, Matt Lieb, hitting this with those genetically enhanced drops. Enough is enough. I have had it with these motherfucking...
Starting point is 00:01:11 Super intelligent sharks. On this motherfucking... Underwater scientific research facilities. Everybody's strapped in. Hell yeah. What's up? I remember that old meme. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Remember the internet back then? When it was fun. It was ruled. Well, we're making it fun again, y'all. Hell yeah. Right. Make the internet fun again. Hey, this is a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:01:34 We're going to talk about Deep Blue Sea. And to do that with us, we have the two hosts of the amazing podcast, Black People, Love Paramore, Sequoia Holmes and Ryan Graham. Hi, guys. Hello. Yes, thank you. Having us. Finally. We're very excited to talk about Deep Blue Sea with y'all.
Starting point is 00:01:55 But first, we're going to get to know you in a segment. call Talk to Guest. Okay. Talk to guest. Okay. So y'all have a podcast that's about a broad variety of pop culture, talking movies, TV, music, as opposed to our very specific podcasts, which basically talks about movies that have Ouija boards in them.
Starting point is 00:02:18 But y'all kind of do it all. I'll ask this to each of you. Do you have a pop culture take that either your co-host is baffled? by or that your audience has been baffled by. Is there anything that you, is there any opinion you hold dear that you find particularly spicy? Hmm. It is spicy between me and Sequoia.
Starting point is 00:02:40 There's a take that I specifically have that we, it comes up on black people up here more all the time. I think I'm correct in saying that high school musical is a much better movie musical teen drama type of movie than Cheetah Girls could ever be. Oh shit. And Sequoia continuously argues with me about that. But I'm just saying, we know which franchise is bigger. That's all.
Starting point is 00:03:05 That's all. We also know that Taylor Swift is bigger than Beyonce. That's true. Well, in ticket sales for a tour that doesn't have anything to do with the imprint on pop culture, which the Cheetah Girls, I think, has a bigger imprint. Come on, Emily. In my opinion. Say it louder, Emily.
Starting point is 00:03:22 Say it louder. Yeah, I mean, one of them got stilted by a Kardashian, and it is. had an effect on the whole ripple of the Kardashian Empire, as we know it. We will never have designer socks from Rob anymore. That is true. I would argue that we would also never have Coachella the way it is today if it was not for one Vanessa Hudgens, Queen of Coachella. She invented Coachella style, that all of that.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Like that whole aesthetic in terms of like peak Unz-UChicella aesthetic is Vanessa Hudgens. Okay. Do you see how the world was saved from Rob, having designer socks and the world has been made worse by Feneza Hedgens, Coachella experience. Hey, I'm just saying, impact, impact. Boy, now I'm, I'm completely invested in this argument and will be hunting for it in your episodes. I can't wait. I can't wait.
Starting point is 00:04:13 I want to talk about speaking of your episodes, if people aren't already subscribed to the pod, they really should be. It's a delight. I want to recommend people start with the Shrek episode. Do you want to share some opinions on Shrek, just some things people might hear if they tune into the Shrek episode? I saw Shrek for the first time when I was in second grade and I did not like it.
Starting point is 00:04:40 I thought it was too boy. I thought it was, you know, lame overall. And I watched it again for the first time as an adult just maybe two weeks ago. It was fantastic. It like, my God, my little child brain could not comprehend what I was watching. That is an adult's,
Starting point is 00:04:57 film. It is magnificent. Shrek is an adult film. It is. Well, a lot of people think of it. I've seen. I, as like someone of my age, a little bit older, I kind of missed Shrek
Starting point is 00:05:17 entirely and only know it as the source of the world's most baffling memes. Like the craziest memes, at least for a while, involved Shrek. and I'm like, I miss this totally. I'm just like a little too old for this anyway. Did you ever go back and watch it?
Starting point is 00:05:33 No, I never have. I know, I have like, I have nephews now. So I need to be, I need to use them as the reason to watch Shrek because I just know it as the meme where he fires a gun at Harambe and then weed sunglasses come down and it says like, what's all this then? I'm just like, what's any of this? I've never seen that meme. I don't know. I'm trying to think of the context. Sounds like you made that one up while you went along.
Starting point is 00:06:00 That was just a, you know, jigsaw puzzle of memes I've seen. Stream of consciousness. The real ones are not less, are not more coherent. Well, all I know is about the like snatchifying of the lady ogre in the new movies. Yeah, exactly. Fiona is like about to have, they released images of how she's going to look in the new one. And they've like slimmed her down. And like the best thing about it was that she was like, fuck it.
Starting point is 00:06:29 I'm an ogre. I don't care about being like traditionally beautiful. That's like the whole moral of it is like love yourself for who you are. And yes, in the new installment, they all have like bucophat removal. Like they all got nose jobs. Everyone looks very different. So there was an outrage about the new. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Oh no. Do they have Mar-a-Lago face? They do. Yeah. They do. Oh, they do. Shrek on fucking Ozempic. That's fucking.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Yeah. Yes, that's what people are saying. I will say we covered Shrek 1 mostly because it was the anniversary of it. You can jump straight to Shrek 2. It is the best in all of them. It is a fantastic sequel. I love, love, love Shrek 2. So yes, if you haven't seen them all, you should go straight to Shrek 2 if you're asking me.
Starting point is 00:07:16 How many Shreks are there exactly? Do you know? Four in total and there's a fifth one coming out. And then there's like a couple of spinoffs. I did not know that there was four. I know Puss and Boots has a thing. I haven't seen that. I've heard it's really good.
Starting point is 00:07:30 But it's fantastic. For fucking Shrek movies, I had no idea. Yeah. That's wild. The well runs deep. And they're all tear jerkers. Like the spinoffs, I haven't seen Shrek too, but yeah, it's a tear jerker. And is Shrek kind of.
Starting point is 00:07:43 I know what you mean. I cannot hear Smashmouth without cheering. I'm telling you. I mean, truly. The world is going to roll you. I got to say, I saw a video today on Instagram of somebody at Cario. they, I guess, put creep by Radiohead in and then had that music going and then... Saying All-Star?
Starting point is 00:08:03 All-Star lines up perfectly to it if you do it within that. So does imagine with All-Star. And people were all like singing the lines and I was like, I appreciate this a lot. I do. But yeah, that's crazy. I guess, is that part of the Universal Studios world where they could have a Shrek world if they wanted to. Ooh, good question.
Starting point is 00:08:27 I think it is Universal, and I'm surprised they don't. Yeah, it's a DreamWorks movie, but they do have some DreamWorks stuff at Universal Studio. It feels like... With the licensing deal, they could probably get Shrek in there.
Starting point is 00:08:38 I've been yelled at Buy Donkey at Universal. So they have a donkey that's mean to you. Oh, my God. I love that. Isn't it weird? You'd think they'd have like, you know, a sprinkler thing or something because it's like we got Mario World
Starting point is 00:08:52 and then everything feels kind of like it's not cohesive. I feel like Shrek and the swamp of it all would really bring things together with the water world experience, which we do not want to leave Universal Studios. We need the water world experience to stay. And I think Shrek would really keep it there. I love Universal and I would love a Shrek. Or maybe it should become the Shrek experience and it's a swamp. Sequoia, you responded there. Do you have a favorite Universal Studios thing? Ooh, my favorite Universal Studios thing. You know what?
Starting point is 00:09:25 I like horror nights when it, during the holidays. I love, that's my, that's my preference. I'm hoping this year that they have a sinners. They do. They said they would. And I hope it includes a smoking stack maybe doing things to me. Doesn't sound, doesn't sound horrible. Like a adult film.
Starting point is 00:09:45 I mean, it both be Michael B. Jordan. It'll be a guy from an improv class. Jordan, no, no, no, no, no, no, Jordan. Do not wish that. Okay. It's going to be. That's fine. Maybe that's fine.
Starting point is 00:09:55 That's the one time he'll ever be sexy. So that's great. I feel like it's important for me to play the Imagine the All-Star song. Just because it feels like you guys didn't know they mesh together. Oh, yeah. Please, Matt. Please prove this. Just so you know that they work perfectly together.
Starting point is 00:10:22 It'll like, if you listen to this for too long, you will start crying. Yeah, I don't like it as good as creep. Oh, yeah, you do. Just wait until the drums come in, Emily. There's drums? They mix the drum? Of course, there's drums. Oh, shit.
Starting point is 00:10:47 Holy shit. That's better than in the air tonight. Yeah. That's nice. Oh, that is pretty good. And I do want to clarify. I'm saying the first time someone's ever going to be sexy is an improv, like, actor pretending to be. Michael B.
Starting point is 00:11:05 Emily doesn't have the world hottest take that Michael B. Jordan is unattractive. I don't almost respect it. I'd almost be like, okay. Oh, my God. I do appreciate the clarification. Me and Ryan do argue about that. I saw your face, acquitted. I was like, oh, we got to, we got to clarify.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Right, Ryan, you don't think Michael B. Jordan was sexy? So we talk about this, I think what's it today, or sometimes recently, where I understand how people arrive at Michael B. Jordan being sexy. I do not arrive there. I get it. It is objective. I like my men. He's symmetrically perfect. But that's the problem.
Starting point is 00:11:37 I like medium ugly, and he is too pretty. He is much too pretty for me. So, yeah, I can't wait until we get to hunk of the week, because I might have a hot take. I really do. Oh, I can't wait. I was saving it for the pot because I almost text Sequoia about it today because I was I'm not going to lie, I was embarrassed about it But it's okay, we'll get there
Starting point is 00:11:57 This seems like a nice time to transition into talking about today's film deep blue sea Now when I was emailing y'all about the movie And I said this is the one we would like to do There was palpable excitement on the email thread Do you guys want to tell me about your experience with this film? which it seems like you've seen. I love this movie. Like, it was one of those things.
Starting point is 00:12:26 I don't, like, anything that involved a L.O. Cool J. Or, like, a Morris Chestnut, anyone, any, like, early 2000s Black Hottie, my mom was obsessed with him, and so I watched all of those movies. So I grew up watching this movie, and I was so happy to rewatch it as an adult. And rewatching movies as an adult
Starting point is 00:12:43 to make me realize, I don't know what I watched. I did not know the plot of this movie. When I watched this as a kid, I just taught sharks. Samuel L. Jackson. and L. Cool J was hot. You could have written the movie with what you know.
Starting point is 00:12:54 100. And honestly, yeah, there's not much else going on. But I was so excited because I love like a, I don't even know how to describe it like a, it's not horror. It is built as a horror, but it's like a monster film that's like kind of like it's a little bit of Jaws. It's a little bit of Jurassic Park. It's a little bit of alien. Like I love this genre of like action thriller movie. They're like the good kind of bad. I'm so happy.
Starting point is 00:13:17 This is, this is a great way to put this because this. This movie is a part of a theme month that we have called Animal Attack August, which is all of those things. Animal Attack August. They're all here. They are all here. That's what it is. Sequoia, it seems like you have also seen this film and also have feelings.
Starting point is 00:13:44 So I did see it for this podcast. I had never seen the film. I had never heard of the film. I was wholly unfamiliar. familiar with Deep Lucy. I go to Tooby, I turn it on, I must say I absolutely hated it. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
Starting point is 00:13:59 You gotta hold it to the end. Hold it to the end. This is why we do the pod. That's right. When Ryan says when he was a kid, he didn't know what the movie was about. I still don't know what the movie was about. I have no idea.
Starting point is 00:14:14 About what is shark smart? Shark is usually dumb. Shark is usually dumb. I'm usually dumb. Big smart char. Okay, I can't. So let's do this. We're gonna,
Starting point is 00:14:24 we're gonna take folks through the plot and then at the end, we will all give it a ranking. And Sequoia, you can, you know, hold court there for as long as you'd like. Maybe after the explanation of the plot, you'll really,
Starting point is 00:14:35 really like the movie now. I don't really like it. Yeah. Listen, it happens sometimes. Like, it has. In general, do you, do y'all like an animal attack movie? Is this a genre that you're into?
Starting point is 00:14:47 Nope. You're shaking your head, no, Sequoia. Ryan does. I love. Well, yeah, let's start talking about it. The movie opens with two couples on some kind of boat, not really a yacht. I don't know what this is. I'm not a boat guy, but they're on it and they're making out near each other.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Yeah, I love to go on a double date and make out. Boombachs. Love a boombox. It's a catamaran. That's what they're called. I'm pretty sure it's a catamaran. It might be, maybe more of a, I don't know. Again, not a boat guy over here.
Starting point is 00:15:16 Catamaran, that sounds right to me. That sounds right. Okay, Orange County. You don't know what boats are like? No, I don't. I was excluded from all Orange County boat culture. Too into SCA. I was too busy getting into SCA.
Starting point is 00:15:30 I don't have time for boats. Me too. I get it. I feel like SCA and like MTV, spring break and boats would go together, but they don't. You would think. Yeah, you'd sink to the bottom in those like soaked vans. Yeah. Pick it up, pick it up, pick it up.
Starting point is 00:15:47 Not good. Yeah. If you fall off a boat in your suspenders and pork pie hat, you're sinking right to the bottom. So, yeah, this couple is making out, and they have just the barest replacement level. We'll think of something better later dialogue. One guy, I just wrote this down, and this guy's delivery was just so blazze. He just goes, we're having a party, man. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:14 You're supposed to be on this decadent, maybe. group sex is about to happen. Party, man. It's very cool. What you say when, like, you bring home little Caesars. That is so true. You're having a party, man.
Starting point is 00:16:30 Yeah. So anyway, and also there's a... Okay, so their stuff starts falling in the water. Like, wine falls in the water. Kind of looks like blood. A teddy bear falls in. There doesn't seem to be kids on the boat. Why did they have a teddy bear?
Starting point is 00:16:44 I don't know. And we lingered on the teddy bear for much too long. I was like, what is the significance of this teddy bear? We never saw who had it. It just is lingering in the water. Is there a cut thing where their kids were like below deck or something? They were all like young adults. They didn't give children.
Starting point is 00:16:59 They seemed like they were like 20s. It was supposed to signify that this shark has no sentimentality for like youthful human things. I don't know. Because most sharks do, but this one is not. Yeah, but it's like if there's a baby in the water, then I think the shark, would be like, noam-nom. It's like, what's that, what's that like pocket B.B. and J thing? It's an uncrustable.
Starting point is 00:17:27 That's a, that's a baby for a shark. A baby to a shark. Yeah. So, wow. That's a smuckers, uncrustable. That's funny. You know what? No crust on a baby.
Starting point is 00:17:38 You're right. Especially if the dipy is clean. Yeah, none. So the, yes, shark attacks this, whatever kind of both this is. Everybody falls in the water. You think they're going to get chomped. But then Shark gets fucking ravaged by harpoons, shot by
Starting point is 00:17:55 yeah, Thomas Jane. That's right. Thomas, three punishers ago, Jane, is there shooting everybody with harpoons. He's the tough guy of the movie. Jordan? Yeah. Okay. Yes, we've seen this guy in a lot of stuff. He was in the mist.
Starting point is 00:18:12 He's in a lot of stuff. Does anyone else get him confused with the actor who played Raiden in Mortal Kombat. I do not. Christopher Lambert. Yeah. You know, I think Christopher Lambert, you know, a little more of an 80s guy.
Starting point is 00:18:28 He's the Highlander. They look like the same guy to me. They're a similar man with similar vibes. I see how he arrived. Uncle. It's like his uncle. It could be, they could be like related. I see that.
Starting point is 00:18:38 I thought they were the same guy. I thought they both were Highlander. I thought all this stuff. And then I'm like. But there can only be one. There can only be one. You're right. Also.
Starting point is 00:18:47 there should be a different Raiden. That's true. That's an interesting choice. But I thought that he was him. He was the star power of that movie. Thomas Jane was? Of what? Mortal Kombat. Oh, of Mortal Kombat.
Starting point is 00:19:00 I mean, at the time, I think it was a big get to get him. That's true. I think the animatronic Goro was the star of that movie. That's the one who we actually like from the movie. Exactly. As far as somebody to put over the title. I forget the actor's name. Side note.
Starting point is 00:19:16 I forget the actor's name who plays Shang Sung in that movie. The first, we're talking about the 90s, Mortal Kombat. So he died last year. No. In his Oscars in Memorium, they showed him in Mortal Kombat. I fucking loved it. I was like, yes, this guy's greatest role is Shang Sung. That movie rules, and we still haven't done it for free with ads because it is,
Starting point is 00:19:38 it's free with ads for a moment and then it's gone. They give it to you just a little bit and they take it away. of course so yeah so this uh so thomas jane fucks up this shark and we go to a big money office where dr susan mccalister played by saffron you don't like her not a fan of dr susan mccalister what what are your thoughts on dr susan mcgson you know what i'll save it to the end but she gets what's coming to her she's true wow god forbid a girl have some heart have some some some what's a cure have a cure she'll have a cure don't have It was me involved.
Starting point is 00:20:17 God forbid. Let's talk about those lips in that bone structure because that face is... Yeah, face was, yeah, ate down. Okay, the chins in this movie. Yeah. The strong, clefty butt chins
Starting point is 00:20:30 on basically fucking everybody in this movie. Where is Bruce Campbell? I know. Yeah. He would have been too goofy looking. That's true. Like somehow LLO Cool J is kind of a goofy guy,
Starting point is 00:20:44 but he managed to like give some finesse and some charm to the character where you, like, you didn't think he was too goofy. Like, but Bruce Campbell, he's a little goofy. Like, I think that he's in. I've never seen him do a dramatic role. As Bruce Campbell ever done a dramatic role? McHale's Navy. McHale's Navy, probably, yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:06 Oh, I have to go see that then. I'm just kidding. I'm just joking. I think it's a dumb comedy starring Tom Arnold, I believe. Oh, woof. But here's the thing that's tough about. Susan, which I don't know anybody named Susan anymore at all. Bring it back.
Starting point is 00:21:22 I do know somebody. Okay, when I went to college, I was in Arkansas, and there was somebody who had a black lab that they named Susan, and they would just go, Susan! Oh, my gosh. Like, they would yell at it because it was like in trash or something. And that's how I know the name. Susan loves trash.
Starting point is 00:21:41 Susan loves to eat out of the trash. Naturally. You can't have chocolate. Susan. It was that all the time. Not good for you. But yet, no, but the thing is, if you hate her, you don't care about Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's. Yep, there's that.
Starting point is 00:21:56 Wow. So, so this, so this, the shark escape that almost killed the sexy couples. This has made the front page of USA Today. The USA Today that is being held by her boss, played by Samuel L. Jackson, test shark escapes? What kind of a fucking. Headline is that. Test shark escapes. What does that mean? It's so dumb. It's just so the first thing they thought of.
Starting point is 00:22:23 Anyway, so Samuel Jackson, he is the head money guy, this big old company, and Dr. Susan, she is trying to use shark brain goo to cure Alzheimer's. She has a kind of a personal story about her dad getting it. And like this goofy shark movie has this one scene where she explains Alzheimer's. that's like genuinely touching. And I do feel like it helps her motivation through the movie. I think about it a lot. I'm saying that's what I meant like when I was a kid and I watched it. That all, none of that sank in. And I was like, oh, there's so much more heart to this movie than I thought.
Starting point is 00:22:59 I thought they were literally just fighting sharks. And I was like, oh, she has a real purpose. And they're doing like science. But it also seems like she's only doing it for selfish reason. So it's like if it didn't happen to her, then it wouldn't. But I think it would be interesting if she added the element of I will get it. Like I have the. I have the gene.
Starting point is 00:23:16 I have the gene that will get it. And that would make you feel better about hating her. Like it, I think. Yeah, it would have made you. But also, this movie is just chockful of would you rather death, like, scenarios. So it's like, yeah, would you Alzheimer's or Shark Attack? Or would you rather drown or burn in an oven?
Starting point is 00:23:40 Or would you, like, rather botched amputation rescue? Or hang out with Michael Rappaport. For five minutes. Always the other one. Always the other one. Whatever else. Thank you for the punchline, Matt. It was perfect.
Starting point is 00:23:56 One other random aside, who is the man in the chair? Samuel Jackson is like the character that we follow for the rest. And they have that old man sitting in the chair and we never see or hear from him again. And I was confused by that. Oh, he's the man in charge who never has to suffer any consequences. Awesome. Cool. I was just like, who is he?
Starting point is 00:24:12 Okay, random aside. Yeah. So, yeah, so they basically, shit's getting out of control at the shark research facility. So they fly out there. Samuel L. Jackson drops a little bit of his lore that something happened in the Alps. This will come back in a very big way later. But yeah, Samuel L. Jackson was like famously part of a group that got lost in the Alps. We'll learn more later.
Starting point is 00:24:37 So, yeah, Thomas Jane, he's the shark wrangler on this secret lab. He's just a fucking tough guy. and like suits, fuck suits, says Thomas Jane. He hates them. That happy trail and those abs was, it was wild. He looks good. Thomas Shane looks good. Looks very good.
Starting point is 00:24:55 The highlights, the 2000s highlights. Bring them back. I don't know. Bring him back. Some good tips on Jane. Oh, just a tip, Jordan. Sure. As long as they're frosty.
Starting point is 00:25:08 Just the frosted tip. Yes, that's when you're having sex with Mark McGrath. but don't want to get pregnant. Just the frosted tip. Which is every time. Yeah. I do not want to have McGraths baby. I mean, not enough royalties in the world.
Starting point is 00:25:24 Right. Anyway, so yeah, this underground or secret above-bub water research facility full of character actors that you like, well, and also Michael Rappaport's there too. Okay. Did anybody watch him on The Traders? Yes. Yes. He was such a fucking dick, but also there's that shot of him eating pasta.
Starting point is 00:25:51 The plate is in his mouth. It's like insane. So he, there's just a brief B-roll shot of him eating pasta and he has the plate. It's like it's in his teeth and he's dumping it into his mouth but also shoveling with a fork. Yeah. It's like how a monkey would eat it. I did not see that. It's pretty insane.
Starting point is 00:26:10 It's a latchkey kid like macaroni like situation. Like it's just nobody ever raised me like kind of thing. But anyway, but I did watch the traitors and boy, he, but I'm like, how did he become an actor? I didn't really look into how he became an actor or how did he. He was also like a standup, no? From what I remember like he was like black fans up a little bit later. Oh, okay. I remember my parents knew like he is, I don't know why, but he is like an actor that my parents know well.
Starting point is 00:26:42 I know a lot of older black people like know him from movies and things like that. I again, I don't know where he came from, but growing up, I was aware of who Michael Rappaport was. What is his relationship to the black community where they like him? He has been in a lot of black movies. But again, I don't know why.
Starting point is 00:27:00 He's like the go-to-white guy. Where Ryan and I... Yeah, he's perfect type of white guy to have as a foil in a movie because he's like ambiguously ethnic white. You're like, is he a racist Bostonian or is he a racist Jewish guy? Or racist Italian guy.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Like, what is this? Yeah, that's it. I don't know. Ryan and I were talking about Michael Rappaport on our other podcast, freshly popped. It's a daily pop culture show. We were watching traitors. And we were just talking mad shit about him, big shit about him. Because we naturally were very irritated by him.
Starting point is 00:27:35 Yes. We clip it. We put it on TikTok. He sees it. No way. Yes, he does. Yes. Always.
Starting point is 00:27:41 First, before he sees it though, my mother sees it. And as Ryan just said, he's big with the black community. My mom's mad at me for disliking Michael Rappaport. She comments on my TikTok. And she's like, well, if you didn't know, Michael Rappapur is important to us because blah, blah, blah, blah. She's doing this explainer. I'm like, what the fuck?
Starting point is 00:28:00 People are liking it because they don't realize this is my mom that's talking to me in the comments. They think this random person is dragging me. I'm like, by the way, this is my mom. So I comment that. By the way, this is my mom. Michael Rappaport sees that response to the video of a drag him overall, response to my mom's comments, like, tell your mom I said hi.
Starting point is 00:28:17 Yeah. Wow. Insane. Funny guy. Kind of earned a little bit of respect. Oh, I hope he listens to this episode. Hi, Michael. Why do you eat pasta like that?
Starting point is 00:28:29 We have to know. I mean, let's be fair, though. I don't think he was terrible in this movie. No. And also he doesn't seem like a guy who would know all the things he knows, though. When he was like doing the length of the fences and things like that, I'm like, I don't believe you're going to know the math or the pressure. How high do you think those are?
Starting point is 00:28:49 He goes centimeters, meters, or feet? We're talking in. He's the voice of a guy who installed car stereo. He's kind of a guy that like he double cross Al Capone or something. Like he's just like, I don't know, centimeters, meters, meters, your wife, my wife. Yeah. I don't know. Like the penguin.
Starting point is 00:29:10 We get a little explainer about this secret floating lab that they're on. There's like three security levels. Like they're underwater. Level three is, of course, called Wet Entry. That's the level I meet your mom at. And then so Stellan Scarsgaard. Thank you. I know you're right, Eddie Redmayne.
Starting point is 00:29:34 You're right. So Stellan Scarsguard is there. He is playing his character from the Marvel movies, apparently, which is scientists who always seems kind of drunk. And they've been illegally, they've been illegally enhancing the shark's brain so they can get more shark brain matter, which is apparently what you use to cure Alzheimer's. Also, this is where we meet. We've talked about him. He's here, not only the most memorable part of the movie, but the singer of perhaps the best movie tie-in song of all time, L.O. Cool J. He is their chef and he has a talking bird who hates him and he hates the bird and they hate each other.
Starting point is 00:30:15 But they don't though. You're right. You're right. It is an Alan Peg Bundy, I think. Yeah. I love that the bird is presented with no explanation. Like where do the bird learn these things? What is the bird?
Starting point is 00:30:27 And also what's wrong with the fat butt? Like I'm like, he's complimenting you, L.L. And say, yeah, you're right. This bird is obsessed with fat's butts. I've heard of sir, mix a lot, but bird mix a lot. Wow. Here's the other thing that I find confusing. It felt like maybe the ship came with the bird, or did he come with the bird to the ship?
Starting point is 00:30:49 Which one was it? It kind of felt like he was working there and he had to deal with the bird because it was already there. No one else mentions the bird. The canary in the coal mine kind of thing. It's like a canary in the coal. Oh, my God. The bird's not real. The bird's not real.
Starting point is 00:31:06 The bird's in his head. The bird's Tyler Dirt. Birds are real guy. No, I do not accept this reality. I like that real. That makes it make a lot more sense, actually. Because the thing about it, the other thing, I mean, we'll get there, but he in the movie by himself, as I was watching it, I was like, oh, does he like have a shorter schedule and he couldn't film with people? Because the first hour and a half of the movie, he is alone.
Starting point is 00:31:29 He is literally only filming with him in the bird. And so I'm like, did Ella, Cool J not get along with anyone? Or did he just, like, not have the schedule to do it? Probably didn't have a scandal. Maybe, maybe he was going crazy because no one worked with him in the kitchen and he needed a bird friend. He made it up. It is very Downton Abbey in a way where it's like he's below deck dealing with the shark thing by him fucking self. And he's like, he killed more sharks than I think anyone else did.
Starting point is 00:31:56 I think he has a higher kill count. Oh, absolutely. But yeah, his scenes were the best scenes. So they're trying to extract shark brain matter. from one of these super intelligent sharks and it bites off Stellan Skard's Gar's arm and so they have to like helicopter
Starting point is 00:32:14 lift him, you know, to a hospital but there's a storm so what happens is his, his hospital gurney that they're winching him up on, dips in the water, a shark gets it and because he's wearing an oxygen mask,
Starting point is 00:32:30 he's not drowning, so he's alive. So the shark uses Stellan Scarscar with the mask on which is preventing him from dying to just smash into the glass of the lab and this is kind of like what kicks off
Starting point is 00:32:43 like the big action of the movie so yeah they still they use Stalin Scarsgarde's body or I guess a live battering ram which I guess Swedish or bones are like made of like titanium
Starting point is 00:32:56 you smash a Scarsgarde into something it breaks they call that shit Norwegian wood that's what it as Lennedin and McCartney once sung a And it was at this point in the movie where I had to pause it, turn to my fiance
Starting point is 00:33:10 and ask what genre is this movie? Is this supposed to be is it comedy? Like I was like is this a comedy or is this supposed to be like something else? And he's like this is not a comedy. The genre is called good. Yes. Okay. Because I'm telling you, I had the exact opposite
Starting point is 00:33:26 reaction. I saw it and was like, well, I'm in. That is the exact moment where I was like, I remember why I love this movie. Because it's the good kind of bad. I love it. I love it. They took way too long to run. Like, I don't know what they were waiting for. But as the glass is cracking, they're like,
Starting point is 00:33:40 oh, we should get out of here. And they're like slowly backing up. I'm like, run. I think there's the reason they take a long time to run is because they're saying to each other, what genre of movie is this? That's exactly. I swear they are. Everybody's wondering.
Starting point is 00:33:54 So, yeah, so, like, shit hits the fan. They're all, like, swimming away from the water. They don't know where the sharks are. Everybody kind of convenes in this area with a little pool. And this is when Samuel L. Jackson explains what went on in the Alps. And this is the scene that this movie is known for. This is like this movie's legacy.
Starting point is 00:34:15 Other than, of course, L.O. Cool J's rap, where the chorus is deepest bluest, my hat is like a shark's fin. Jordan, would you say this is like the speech kind of in Jaws where the one character describes a horrible experience where he gathered a shark? And it's like, I feel like they kind of did a, a one like jump scare version of this
Starting point is 00:34:38 yeah it's like a joke homage to that thing yeah that's a that's a great that's a great point Emily I did not think that but yeah this is kind of like rubber forster and jaws going it's black eyes like a doll's eyes but the funniest part is that the story itself is about like skiing is this okay so the story is like out of a different movie It's a different movie.
Starting point is 00:35:05 He's describing a different movie. It's an unrelated, awful thing that happened to him where he got caught in the Alps. And because he is this ruthless business guy, he implies that he convinced his whole party to start eating people so that they could survive. So he's like, seven of us crashed and five of us came back. So we know that Samuel L. Jackson is capable of murder. And then the shark just eats him out of nowhere. He's the most famous person in this. movie at the time by a long shot.
Starting point is 00:35:37 Yeah. And, and obviously it's so crazy, but the thing I was thinking about while I was watching this is, you know, they really tease a better movie. They do. I want to see that movie. Well, they're running from the sharks and Samuel Jackson. And I'm like, great, we have this ruthless murderer cannibal guy on the loose. And it's like, who's, you know, and then they're like, nah, never mind.
Starting point is 00:36:01 Just forget about that movie. We're just going to have Thomas Jane run around. Anyway. Every time they kill someone in this movie, it's that quick. And like inconsequential, they just go, time to die immediately. Like, you're done. I liked that. I did too.
Starting point is 00:36:15 I did. I was like, oh, anybody can get it. Like, it doesn't really matter. Everybody can go. Everybody, absolutely. I mean, everybody can get it, but also everybody in this movie can get it. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:28 You can get it with these chins on everybody. I want to suck that shark's dick. Whoa. That's what I was talking about. Wow. Yes. You ever see what they look like? Shark dick?
Starting point is 00:36:42 I was asking because I haven't looked it up by the show. I'm scared. Well, I know that my hat looks like a shark fin. That's right. Matt's hat does look at the sharks fan. Shout out L.O. Pool J. I'm going to have to play that song for everyone so they know what you're talking about. It's something.
Starting point is 00:36:57 It is the, yeah, it's one of those 90s hip-hop tie-ins to, where they explain the plot of the movie, but I do not understand this chorus whatsoever. Oh my God, I'm being assaulted again. I'm, Deepest blue is my hat is like a shark spin. Deepest, blue is my hat is like a shark spin. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:20 Blue is my hat is my hat is back. No, yeah. That's all right. Nobody's saying the song is bad. The song's great. No, no. I am saying the song is bad. Oh, okay, you're saying the song is bad.
Starting point is 00:37:34 Bad. This is my song. me that because L.O. Cool J. Yeah, it was a bad song. I love L.O. Cool J. Ladies love him. And that's why. Ladies, you love it. That's what it did. Him deciding to name himself Ladies Love. Yeah. Is that
Starting point is 00:37:48 with the L.S. Stanford? Yeah. Ladies. Love James. The same thing with Ladies Love Bean, the type of clothes I wear. Oh, LLB. Yes. Matt, we love your LLB. So, Matt, I'll issue a little bit of a correction. You said that this is
Starting point is 00:38:04 one of those kind of 90s tie-ins. where someone wraps the plot of the movie. L.L. Cool J is wrapping a different plot where he is a half man, half shark. Oh. I'm reading here from Genius.com. Looking for human flesh to rip my teeth through. Other fish in the sea, but barracudas ain't equal
Starting point is 00:38:22 to a half human predator created by a needle. And that's why in the video of this song, he turns into a shark and eats his dancers. Oh, I've never seen the video. Oh, you must. Oh, you must. Oh, my God. Wow.
Starting point is 00:38:37 That, I will look this up. That's funny. I want him to do more, like, more animal-related raps like this. Yeah, about different movies. Yeah. I feel like there was this whole era in the 90s in early 2000s where, like, rapper-turned actors. Because remember, like, Buster Rhymes was like a security guard in H-2-O, Anaconda, which I don't know if you guys are doing that. Also another great-mont.
Starting point is 00:38:59 We did it last year. So good. Yeah, Ice Cube Anaconda, although he's also an actor, like an actual actor. But yeah, I feel like there was this whole thing and they would all rap. with the soundtrack to these movies. It was a very strange synergy time. Like I know somebody somewhere, some corporation was like,
Starting point is 00:39:13 we can make money this way. I'm sure they made like literally billions of dollars like tying in Adams family with MC Hammer rapping about the Adams family or whatnot. The Ninja Turtles and Vanilla Ice. Yeah. Go Ninja Go Ninja Go. Which is a good talk.
Starting point is 00:39:30 That one does hit. What year did this come out? 99. 99. This was peak like MTV synergy kind of thing with movies, music. It was right before the internet. Celebrity culture. So like we did, you know, Godzilla 98 or 99, which MTV did all these music videos, like two for the soundtrack.
Starting point is 00:39:53 This is probably, you know. Peak that. It was peak that for sure. Well, yeah, let's see. We're about to get to the thrilling finale of Deep Blue Sea. Why don't we take a little break and we'll come back for some more. We're back. It's free with ads. We're here with Black People Love Paramore. We're talking about deep blue sea. So yeah, lots of just, just very random scenes of the shark attacking people. L.L. Cool.J does get trapped in his own oven at one point and the shark turns it on with his nose. Crazy.
Starting point is 00:40:45 It's crazy. He has to like break out of his oven. The shark like, you know, takes Alzheimer's medicine and all of a sudden knows what video cameras are and knows how to work. an electric oven and I'm like, I don't know if that makes actual sense. And someone posits that the sharks are so smart, they're using the people to get out because they know that if the people go up, the water will rise and they'll be able to get out. That is insane. Yeah. It's a big leap.
Starting point is 00:41:16 I mean, they can talk before they do that. Like there's a lot of shit these sharks should be able to do before like this graduated cylinder science experiment. But whatever. The sharks are smart. They're fucking shit up. They could just be following them. They were going up.
Starting point is 00:41:34 So it's like, let's just follow the meat. Follow the meat. Let's just follow where the meat is going. Like, I don't know. Just follow the meat, everybody. Arby's. Follow the meat. Follow the meat.
Starting point is 00:41:49 We follow the meats. Hello, cool. should rap about Arby's. I like that. My meat is like a shark's fan. Speaking of sharks have two dicks. You said the sharks dig earlier, I did Google it and they do have two dicks. I sorry, I had
Starting point is 00:42:06 to throw that in. I don't believe it. I don't believe it. Is it a girl who can do both? Yes. Exactly. So yeah, we're kind of at the finale here. The sharks are about to like break out of the lab thing
Starting point is 00:42:20 and they decide they can't let that happen. So Dr. Susan makes a noble sacrifice. She, like, cuts her hand so that there's, like, blood in the water, and she, like, jumps in the water and kind of swims around and tries to get away from him, but she gets chomp by the shark. Gets cut in half. That's basically however he dies. He just gets chomping half.
Starting point is 00:42:39 But Thomas Jane has rigged up this harpoon to, like, a car battery to, like, blow up the final shark. Oh, and actually, between then, L.O. Cool, Jay, not only talks to a bird, but he's a deeply religious man. He's always talking about God. He has a man with two things, a talking bird, and he's deeply religious. And he uses his crucifix to stab the shark in the eye. Hell, yes. But also, he is a high-key YouTuber because the moment where he's like, he thinks he's going to die. He's like, everybody else is stressing out trying to like solve the problem.
Starting point is 00:43:17 And he's like, I'm just deciding that I'm probably going to die. So I'm going to film a little video with a camera and be like, The perfect omelet includes like this, this and this. Two eggs, not three. I love how unsurious this character is at all times. I think we also in that moment find out that he is a husband and father. Like it's very much through our lines. He goes, yeah, I try to be a good father and a good husband.
Starting point is 00:43:41 And I'm like, oh, wait, where is this family that she was abandoned? But it doesn't matter. Maybe he and the bird are married. Oh, shit. Maybe. Well, he said, like, I came here wanting so that he, like, he, like, he, like, like came here like, you know, looking for success. Like it was risky.
Starting point is 00:43:57 He did this thing. So he has to like send a video that hopefully his family will see. Like I was trying to do the right thing. But for now, I'll just tell you how to do the best omelet. It was kind of touching too because I was like, damn. He's trying to pass down. To my kids. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:14 His legacy is like, and that's like a good. I watched that video. I was kind of writing down the recipe because he was like, people will say to add milk, but that's bullshit. And I went, oh, it is. Yeah. Like, oh. Made me want to cook an omelet.
Starting point is 00:44:26 And see that movie. I'd rather see the movie about the chef who survives or, you know, doesn't survive the shark attack. Or his whole cooking episode within the shark attack that he probably did about 30 minutes of. He probably did a 30 minute video. I love that there's a lot of better movies out of this shitty movie. So, yeah, L.L. Cool, Jay, takes one out with the crucifix to the eye. Dr. Susan gets chomped. and Thomas Jane is able to,
Starting point is 00:44:53 so we see him in the beginning of the movie like riding a shark via the fin so he knows how to like ride the sharks and as he's riding the shark around, L.O. Cool J. shoots him with the harpoon first but then actually gets it and does a thing where he attaches it to a car battery and the shark blows up
Starting point is 00:45:10 at some point L.O. Cool J says, bring me some sushi. I've heard of LL Cool J but LOL Cool J. Kill miss Anyway Yeah So the show's good Does any red mane have anything to say about that man
Starting point is 00:45:27 Oh yeah yeah I mean sure He has He could say Oh dare you Okay so yeah And then the ship comes and gets them And they're buddies
Starting point is 00:45:39 And they don't seem to care That Dr. Susan just died Or that anybody just died They're just fine with it Or that anyone has Alzheimer's Yeah Yeah Did we skip over the part
Starting point is 00:45:50 Where we find out that Dr. Susan has Taken a liberty with these sharks In order to Make Alzheimer's I think they They've been doing There's some sort of like Geneva Convention like thing
Starting point is 00:46:03 That don't make sharks too smarter You're gonna go to jail Yeah it did They lied about it It's called like the Kansas protocol Yeah I think it's literally Yeah like the Harvard something I think they said Harvard to make it sound smarter
Starting point is 00:46:14 It was something yeah But yeah and they just kind of like mess with the sharks and that's why they wanted freedom because they were like she makes their brains too too smart yeah she's like oh there's brains are double the size you violated the harvard shark rules that's why you're trying to kill us yeah i thought that that bird whose name was bird um when it ran away from hearing the like rickety rackety like uh water thing before l l l cool j did i went oh this bird is the smartest character in the whole fucking movie before it got eaten or whatever and then i went Let's get that brain juice, get that big syringe, put it in that parrot.
Starting point is 00:46:50 Maybe the parrot was dosing. Like maybe the parrot was sneaking around and taking a little bit of the serum or whatever. Just licking the eyeballs of the sharks. And now it's also too smart. And that's why it had to go. Yeah. That's why they had to get eaten. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:06 I was so sad with that bird. I was like, this bird is so cool. If anything happens to this bird. It's the most innocent character in the whole movie. It shouldn't be. inside. It's not innocent. It's been the whole movie
Starting point is 00:47:19 It's an outside animal. It was calling L.L. Cool J a dickhead, the whole movie. Hilarious. But like sharks are in the water, right? Like we left it in the water, but it wasn't a ship. But the bird should be in the open. Like, all the time. That's why the bird was so mad.
Starting point is 00:47:35 Because they wouldn't let him on the top deck. He was trapped below. Which another thing I'll say is I could not describe to you what the fuck this structure. sure looks like. Yeah. Like this whole like ship situation,
Starting point is 00:47:50 it was like the movie Cube and Event Horizon and like a bunch of things all combined together and I went, I guess. Yeah, there's never really a wide shot. It's just like there's a window. But like the interior of how everything works, you're like, I guess. I don't know. Tough with these suspense movies when you don't like know the space. So yeah, uh, that's what happens in deep blue.
Starting point is 00:48:14 See, we're going to tell you what we thought of. the movie, but first, you know we got to do the hunk watch. It's hunk watch. Let's go around the horn and talk about any noteworthy hunks of the film. Sequoia, you want to go first? None for me.
Starting point is 00:48:27 None hunts. Oh, zero hunts. Zero for me. That's not feel any tingle for any person. Okay. This is up at first. I like that. You're just abstaining from this second. You know what? I think the acting,
Starting point is 00:48:40 because acting has shifted so much since what it was in 1999, the acting was really, blowing me and making everybody deeply unattractive. Interesting. I get that. El-Cool-J did seem less attractive in this movie than he did when I was a child. I remember being like, ooh, ha.
Starting point is 00:48:55 And in this movie, I was like, oh, I don't know. I have an unpopular opinion. Yes, right. That's, that's time. Michael Rapopor, the moment he popped, because I knew, I saw he was in it, but the moment he popped on screen, I thought, oh. And I hate it. I did.
Starting point is 00:49:09 Something about that gouty, I'm only used to seeing him with white hair. something with that darker hair and that like that like energy. I was like, you know what? I unfortunately would. I wouldn't tell anyone about it. I would ask him to shut up the entire time. You are now. You sold that really.
Starting point is 00:49:24 We listen. We know that many people listen to the podcast. You're okay. There was a time when Michael Rappaport. You know that you. There was a time when Michael Rappaport was cool and and not that unattractive. So it is totally fair for you to look back at someone who is now a broken man and see someone. who was so filled with potential.
Starting point is 00:49:45 I get it. Or just like the internet got to know him. He's probably always this man. It's just we know him now. Matt, any thoughts on the hunks of the film? I'm going Rappaport. Wow. You see it.
Starting point is 00:50:00 You see it. You see the potential there. Two for Rappaport. I'm not a big Rappaport fan, but I will admit, same feeling when I saw him. I was just like, you know what? God, he used to be great.
Starting point is 00:50:12 What happened? What happened to? Because he's also the one guy in this movie who I feel like, I don't know, he's trying. You know what I mean? He's like, like, kind of trying to act. He's just very likable and innocent and you're rooting for him. Right. You know, and I think it's a fun character.
Starting point is 00:50:29 It's like, what if a guy who sounded kind of like a dumbass went to Caltech? You know, that's fun. But if not that, then the bird, bird was pretty hot. The bird. Bird, good. Emily, what do you think? it's going to be the guy who's like his name's Carter in the movie but he is Diet Raiden Thomas Jane Thomas Jay.
Starting point is 00:50:52 Yes Diet Raiden. That the shot where he's first coming out of the water, oh God, I think that I'm going to, I screenshot it and then it was black. They won't let you do that on YouTube. So I'm going to have to replay it and get my phone out at the right time. and then shoot the, but that's how bad I wanted to get the photo of it. So yeah,
Starting point is 00:51:16 it's got to be him, but L.O. Cool J is up there as well because that character, he's by himself with a fake bird, and his sequences were the most suspenseful, interesting action shots. Like, of the entire movie. Whenever you saw him, you went,
Starting point is 00:51:35 this movie is now interesting. Like, so it's, It's the happy trail of Diet Raiden and L.L. Cool J. Yeah, I'm going to join you. I kind of assumed we were going LL Cool J across the board. So I'll just throw in one more for LL. I don't know that he's a great actor, but he's very fun to watch. Charming.
Starting point is 00:51:58 Yeah, and yeah, definitely one of the more memorable parts of this movie. All right, that's the Hunk Watch. We're going to tell you what we thought of the movie right after this. Hey, it's free with ads. We're here with Black People Love Paramore. We're talking about Deep Blue Sea. We're going to tell you what we thought, but first we want to let you know to go to maximum fun.org slash join. That's how you support our show.
Starting point is 00:52:44 That's how you support Black People Love Paramore. And that's how you hear all our bonus episodes. Our bonus episodes are called We Like Shows. We Like Shows. And that's where we watch a bunch of TV pilots we like. We review them. We talk about them. Black people love Paramore.
Starting point is 00:53:00 What is your bonus content? If people join Max Fun, what can they hear? So our bonus content is unnamed, but it is us saying things that we're not willing to say in public. So if you can imagine all the things that we are willing to say in public, imagine what we say when we're not in public. Where Michael Rapaport cannot hear. She subscribes to Max Fun. Wow. I mean, that's a fucking great pitch, by the way.
Starting point is 00:53:33 Thank you. A wonderful pitch. Yeah, and that's kind of something cool about maximum fun is like you're not just supporting one show. You're supporting all the shows on the network and you're getting all of the bonus content. So a wonderful value if you like things to listen to. Okay. Let's go around the horn and rank deep blue sea on a scale of one to ten super loud commercials. because that's what you're paying to watch,
Starting point is 00:53:58 super loud commercials. Sequoia, maybe let's start with you. I feel like you might have the most interesting take on this. One to ten, super loud commercials. I'm going to give it a two. A two commercials. For the parrot. Okay.
Starting point is 00:54:17 That's better than I thought you were going to give it. The parrot gave it a little something, something. Yep. Mm-hmm. That's, that's... Wow. That's fair. That's fair.
Starting point is 00:54:29 I did not enjoy this movie whatsoever. I actively hated it. I could barely follow... I was so sorry we did this to you. I was not really follow what was going on. I was staring at the screen and I was just like... Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Sequoia, can I ask like, what setting, what time of day, what snacks, what drink, what was going on?
Starting point is 00:54:52 You know what? It is 6 p.m. I have hair full of braids that I have to take out. For those of you don't know, braids take multiple hours to take out. So I've decided to sit with this film so I can fully focus,
Starting point is 00:55:05 just have my hands and my hair taking out the braids. My fiance comes and joins me, sits next to me, we have dinner, we have pasta with Italian sausage in it. How do you guys eat this pasta? Do you tip the bowl? Is it tough?
Starting point is 00:55:16 It's just like Michael Rappelport because naturally I'm watching him. We turn it on the film. And I just know it's not for me immediately, but it gets worse and progressively worse and progressively. It was, yeah. That's fair. You gave it every
Starting point is 00:55:31 single effort. I respect that. I respect that a lot. And I might have missed that lady's heartfelt moment. I really might have missed it because I don't remember it. All I remember is her saying that she had given them damn sharks some human growth hormone in their brain.
Starting point is 00:55:47 And that's why they acted like that. I didn't like that. That's why they acted like that. Ryan, let's get some thoughts from you. One to ten, super loud commercials. I would give it 6.5 super loud commercials. I really, I actively enjoy a bad movie, like a good kind of bad. I think we need more movies like this. The plot is easy enough to follow.
Starting point is 00:56:13 It's enough action going on. And I appreciate the practical set and props. Obviously, there was a, like there is CGI. It's early 2000 CGI. But I feel like the sharks were practical and I appreciate that. So I appreciate the campiness and silliness of a bad horror movie and they will always have a special place in my heart. So 6.5, yeah. Matt, you want to sound off?
Starting point is 00:56:34 One of ten super loud commercials? Yeah, I'm going to give this a four. It is, it's very bad. It's almost not fun to watch. But then it always manages to like regain. my interest at some point. And I think that is just, that's just like bad luck or good luck.
Starting point is 00:56:57 It depends because I'd rather it had lost my interest entirely so that I could, I could stop watching it. But instead, I was just like, I kept giving it another chance. So yeah, I'm going to give it a four, you know? A four. Emily, what did you think? One to ten, super loud commercials. Okay, I'm going to need to reference last week's Animal Attack August episode, which is our
Starting point is 00:57:20 first, which was Congo. I found Congo to be incredibly lazy, and I found that the effects were lackluster. This movie had bad special effects that took big, bad swings. And I appreciated it. They went, fuck it if it looks shitty. I don't care. We're going to kill people smashing them into glass, where glass doesn't work that way. Like it doesn't even know how glass works
Starting point is 00:57:51 Or how ovens work And they just went Get all of the practical Like nonsense out of the way Let's just make suspense and action And stupid shit happen I appreciate that about this movie It is full of nonsense
Starting point is 00:58:09 And full of great actors And I don't know I had a blast watching this movie Thank you Thank you I had a blast watching this fucking movie. It was so suspenseful, too. Like, I haven't seen a movie underwater with, like,
Starting point is 00:58:27 there's other movies that are really great with, I mean, Jaws is amazing or whatever. I felt my butthole clinch up more in this movie than I did in Jaws. There. All right. Jaws is amazing. So I'm giving this a seven.
Starting point is 00:58:42 Yes. Um, yeah, I, you know, I, this movie has, I think this movie has a reputation. of being better than it is. I think a lot of people love this movie. And I had a lot of fun watching it in a theater in 1999. Theater is probably better.
Starting point is 00:58:59 And yet, it was nice to revisit it. I don't think it's as good as its reputation. I think it has a couple of crazy things that happen that people remember. Stell and Scars Guard getting smashed against the window. Samuel L. Jackson just getting eaten randomly when he reveals himself to be the most interesting character in the movie. So yeah, I think those parts are cool and fun But maybe the rest of the movie Ain't giving you too much
Starting point is 00:59:24 It's you know, it's a B horror movie But yeah, but I think it's pretty fun And I think I kind of enjoyed it the same as Congo Which I think I'm giving this a bad movie six I think these are both pretty good bad movie night Let's Smoke a J order a pizza and just goof on something So yeah, I think they're both kind of comparable choices again with some good actors and a lot of fun to be had.

I know we're doing Legally Blonde coming up. And I'm trying to remember the last movie we did. It's not as, Shrek is that's on my mind right now.
Starting point is 01:00:28 I know we do a lot of albums. But I know Legally Blonde is coming up and then I remember a goofy movie, which was really fun. Surprisingly, we argued about if goofy is black. And yes, he is. If you were wondering. Oh, she figured it up. We did.
Starting point is 01:00:40 Nobody's arguing about it. And in fact, he is. Goofy movie was. also very fun. And then we also host a daily pop culture podcast. You can join us Monday through Friday. It's called Freshly Popped, where we're talking about all of the hot goss
