This is Free With Ads, the podcast that asked the question, why pay Netflix nine bucks a month to watch a bunch of movies where the premise isn't a group of rock and roll martial arts orphans goes up against a group of biker ninjas who have tightened their grip on Florida's cocaine trade when you can go online for free and watch a movie where the premise is a group of rock and roll martial arts orphans goes up against a group of biker ninjas who have tightened their grip on Florida's cocaine trade. I'm Jordan Morris.
And I'm Emily Fleming.
Today's movie is Miami Connection, the previously long-lost cult classic that proves you can solve your problems through friendship, music, and occasionally cutting off someone's head with a samurai sword.
With us as always is the super producer, The He Freak, Matt Leab, hitting us with those anti-Ninja drops.
I'm the leader of group that played out of Park Avenue. We got fired and then the new group beat us up.
I need you to get rid of them. Get my job back. It's just one thing you got to know. They're all black belts in Taekwondo and they're pretty bad.
to get my job back for me.
Any money I make is yours.
It's a damn band again.
What's up?
That's got to be the longest one I've ever done.
For sure.
And it's like all the money I make is yours.
Then why do you want this job back?
He just watched revenge because they took his job playing in front of 10 people a night
at Central Floor in his hottest nightclub.
Yeah.
He doesn't even want the money.
It's about the honor.
I get that.
If you hear Dragon Sounds music,
I would be fucking humiliated too
that I lost the job.
I would, yes.
Listen,
I'll go ahead and disagree with you right there, Emily.
Oh shit.
It's going to be a contentious.
We got some fans and we got some haters.
Yeah.
Listen,
this is going to be a spicy one.
I can tell we are talking about Miami connection,
which is as of this recording,
streaming free with ads.
But first,
we're going to talk about something else
we saw for free on the internet this week.
Other free stuff.
So, we love a song parody on this show.
And obviously, you know, there's a couple names that come up when you think.
Song parody, Weird Al, of course.
Cleetus T. Judd.
Matt Leeb.
Matt Leap.
These are the greats of song parody.
That's right.
They call me regular Al Yankovic.
Sure.
He's a regular man.
I'm just a regular.
He needs a lot of fiber, too.
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Very regular.
very regular in that way.
So, but I think a name that doesn't come up enough
who slays the song parody game pretty regularly
is the folks over there at Sesame Street.
Oh, absolutely.
They have some legendary song parodies,
and they dropped a new one not too long ago
over there on their YouTube page.
I want to listen to a little bit of it.
This is a cookie monster giving a lesson in potty training
to the tune of a modern pop classic.
Matt, can we hear a little bit of this?
Better.
B-O-T-T-Y-Y-N-N- for snack, but me not feeling hungry,
how good that be true when me tummies all grumpy.
There they go again.
Now me legs are grooving.
There might be a mess if me don't get moving.
Why are your legs grooving?
Why are the legs grooving?
That's kind of good, though.
Yeah, it is.
It's fucking great.
Wow.
You know what?
I might have to show this to my daughter.
The problem is we started with regular chapel row.
So she might be like, why is Cookie Monster ruining my song?
That's great.
Matt, if we talked to you about the fact that you went to Daisy Chain?
I thought this was just a long, drawn-out way of asking me about my experience.
That Daisy Chain, is that right, Jordan?
You had some viral stuff.
That was not the idea.
But, I mean, you know, we listen to it.
Cookie Monster talks about shit in his pants.
That's great.
We all love it.
You listened.
You got it.
Yeah, you get it.
Yeah, yeah.
So Daisy Chain, a big music festival here in Southern California.
Yes.
Put on by Olivia Rodriguez.
That's right about that.
A great mix of like pop music, punk music, all female fronted acts.
Yeah, yeah, very cool.
Man, I didn't know you went.
Tell us all about it.
I will.
It was, I don't know if it's, is it the first year they've ever done it?
Yes.
It kind of felt like that.
My wife and I decided to roll the dice because she got like tickets, like she got in line for tickets and she's like, I think I'm going to get them.
And I was like, I don't know what this is.
I don't know what you're talking about.
And then she said, what if we roll the dice?
and bring Karina.
And I was like,
ooh,
that could be
probably one
of the worst ideas
we've ever had.
But you know what?
I'm going to,
I'm basically going to engineer this
so that Karina,
my three-year-old daughter,
has a good time.
So we got a hotel.
Francesca went out
and saw all these other bands
starting at noon
while Karina was asleep
taking a nap.
She saw like,
she saw the breeders,
she saw garbage,
she saw Dochi.
Whereas I was,
I was just with Karina and I was like, okay, we're going to go out 5.30. We went. We played around for a bit. And then we saw Chapel Rhone and saw, you know, this song, of course, the original lyrics, not the potty part. She should just sing it like this from now on, right? Like, I mean, just, honestly, listen, look, I love Chapel Rone, but there are some songs that I was like, oh, I wish I could get a kid's bop of this version where she just talks about, you know, getting eaten out and stuff.
Not that it's like, you know.
In the front seat, which I'm still constantly trying to figure out how you can do that.
It just seems like a bad angle for it.
Yeah.
Again, I'm not as a seat.
It seems like how far the seat slides back is an issue.
Yeah, that's true.
I think you have to have it a SUV.
You can do it in a light.
You could do it in a light SUV, I bet.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Nissan rogue.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I mean, not like a Kia Sportage.
You got to be able to get me deep.
Not a key of sports, but maybe a key of Saran.
Yeah, not a Prius, certainly.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Hyundai Tucson are bigger
Tucson are bigger
Yes yeah yeah yeah yeah
But the coolest thing about this
Is this the videos and the photos
That came out of Karina on your shoulders
With her little head
Sound like headphones
To help her little ears be protected
And everything
She had PPE on she
She was you know
To make sure that her ears
And get blown out
So she has these big pink like ear muffs
Very cute
And she was on my shoulders the whole time
someone from the New York Times
took a picture because she's so fucking cute
and then I took a video of her
singing Pink Pony Club
and
it went viral because
Olivia Rodriguez commented
adorable on it.
Hey!
Yeah.
So at that point I was just
like, well this is social
cachet for my like seven year old nieces
and so I
showed the comment to them and they were like
oh my God!
It was so awesome.
We thought you were lame.
Yeah.
We thought you saw.
Yeah.
It was truly the cutest thing.
I was just like, I know them.
It's really, really cute.
But I also feel like in a sea of girls, there's this tall, like, dad with his daughter.
And it's like, oh, God, it's so cute.
I can't handle it.
Like, it was just, it's adorable.
Yeah.
The response was mostly, you know, because it's just like, you know, not just like female empowerment
on some sort of like brand, you know.
sort of thing, but literally
like it's a
it's like a non-profit
venture. Like they
gave the money to, I forget
which exact causes,
but you know, women's reproductive health
and stuff like that. So it really is like this
really cool thing that Olivia
Rodriguez put on with all
these female fronted bands and
it's just, yeah,
the politics are good. It's the new Lilith Fair
also. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Which I went twice with my dad.
You went to Lilith Fair with your dad?
Twice.
Circle of life.
Look at that.
I know.
That's why it really kind of made me for clipped when I like saw you guys.
When you went to Lilifair, who were like the big headliners?
Well, Sarah McLaughlin, Cheryl Crow.
Nice, nice.
Jewel.
My dad was just, he really wanted to see Chrissy Hines.
So he went to see Chrissy Hines when I was like going to see Ani DeFranco or something.
But I remember all of that.
I don't remember seeing Alanis.
Morissette. But I do remember it was like my dad took me and a friend with me, like one of my best
friends in both years. And it was the best. It was so, so much fun. And I remember they handed out
these little plastic packets of green glitter sunscreen. And I wish I still had one of those
and had never opened it. But so it was just really sweet to see like another, another dad being,
taking his daughter to like a female like fronted.
festival. It made me so happy. And I'm so jealous too. Yeah. No, I did it to make people jealous.
Yeah. I mean, I think what this does is, oh, it opens up the door to Olivia Rodriguez coming on the podcast.
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Olivia, let us know what Alien versus Predator movie you want to watch.
Exactly. I'm sure we'll. Or maybe you have a Miami Ninja Cocaine movie that you really like. That's not this one. Or a Ouichi-Board movie, we do those too.
I mean, this is a music movie.
And it certainly is.
So it's got movie in it and music.
Yeah.
I mean, I would love to hear Olivia Rodriguez cover against the ninja.
Honestly, though.
If she did.
Honestly, though, I would too.
I don't know. Friends for Eternity is the bop for me.
There, listen, it's, it's tough to pick.
Don't make me choose.
Let's, let's do it.
Let's talk about Miami connection.
Had anybody, I have seen this before.
I've never even heard of it.
Never heard of it.
This is a Jordan pick.
Okay.
So this movie, I think the story of the movie gives a little bit of fun context before we talk about the actual plot.
So this movie was, it's kind of the brainchild of Y.K. Kim, who plays Mark in the movie.
He owned a Taekwondo studio in Florida, had never made a movie before and wanted to make a movie featuring all of his students.
So most of the people, except for two of the members of the band, are just guys who are just guys who,
went to his karate studio.
And he, there's a, you know, he got this Korean director to kind of co-direct it with him.
He's the guy who owns the restaurant.
Mm-hmm.
Oh, I like that guy.
That guy's great.
That guy fucking rules.
Yeah.
The only thing I got wrong in my guess was that I thought it was the, the tall guy.
Oh, you mean Beto O'Rourke?
Yeah, yeah.
I thought it was Beto.
He looks exactly like him.
I was like, what the fuck.
I thought he was the, I was, I assumed I was like, his dad is someone.
And he made this movie with his karate friends.
Well, Jordan, I think we could go ahead and do tallest guy on that guy.
Oh, yeah.
Sure.
We have a very tall guy.
That's right.
Super tall.
Tallest guy.
And I do think Y.K. Kim, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the
smallest guy.
Yeah.
Smile.
But he kicks the most fucking ass.
He kicks more ass than anybody.
Yeah, he's the lead.
I mean, he's essentially the lead of the movie.
Yeah.
Next to the tall guy.
So he is a taekwondo master and a motivational speaker.
And he had never made a movie before.
This is he tried.
It basically bankrupted him to make this movie.
It came out in a couple theaters and then just disappeared.
And then in like 2010, someone at the Alamo draft house bought it for 50 bucks on eBay
and started showing it at midnight.
People are going crazy for it.
And then it led to Alamo Draft House, like, re-releasing it.
And that's when I saw it.
I saw it during a little theatrical run they did.
And now it's just, you know, anywhere that has a free with ad site, it's basically
on.
So it's kind of like gotten this cool second life.
I love that.
Yeah.
I love that.
But yeah, so this is a, yeah, it's a really fun story.
And yeah, it's, and I think everybody involved, I've read a couple interviews with people
and they seem to be really, like, enjoying the cult status.
And they, and, you know, and I think people like make fun of this movie.
but like it's fun to watch.
And I think that's the difference between this and like.
Yeah.
The room a little bit is because this is, this is, it's the same kind of thing, but I think infinitely more fun.
It's fun, but the, the fight scenes are forever long.
They're forever.
So it's like, you know, so I'll say that the big difference between this and the room is like, well, the room is, you know, sans good music.
Well, say for the sex scene and maybe the other sex scene.
And also there's,
You are my rose.
You are my rose.
Yeah.
It's a banger.
And there's no karate in it.
There's something about the room where you're really getting deep insight into Tommy Waiso's, you know, psychology.
This movie doesn't have that so much.
But what it does have is a really earnest attempt at making a cool Taekwondo movie with some of the worst actors.
and I assume some of the worst students that this guy has ever had.
And there's just something.
He's like, maybe they will improve if I put them in a movie.
Yeah, and also maybe they will be my friends if I keep having them sing songs about being best friends.
And so there's something about this where I'm watching it and there's a lot of joy in this movie, which I did not expect, especially for a movie with a premise like this, where you're just like, oh, God, this is like one of those cocaine ideas from the 80s or for some reason.
We had so much money in Hollywood that people could make any dog shit thing they wanted.
But then you're watching it and you're like, oh, no, this isn't some soulless direct straight to VHS.
This feels like someone cared about this movie.
And it really changes the feeling of it as you're watching it.
It did feel like a little gem in the holograms to me because of the band.
The band is also like.
Absolutely. Yeah.
Yeah.
So I was, and the music feels very gem in the holograms.
Yeah.
Yeah. Well, yeah, let's talk about what actually happens in Miami connection.
We start with a shot of a shady waterfront with the caption, somewhere in Miami.
You can just put Miami.
Yeah, you don't even need to do that.
You don't need somewhere.
Yeah.
Miami's already aware.
But at some point it says Bayside.
And I was like, wait a minute.
Is this in the same universe as Saved by the Bell?
There is a lot of Saved by the Bell shit going on in this movie.
I assume it's unintentional.
This movie came out, what, 80?
What?
Eighth.
Eighth.
Yeah.
And when did Saved by the Bell start?
Like 88, 89.
So I don't think it's in, I don't think it's, but there's a lot of, listen,
Bayside is the name of the high school in Saved by the Bell.
And they have a band and they sing friends forever.
So I don't know.
I'm just saying there's a lot of connection there.
There's a lot of connections.
You know, I'm just saying you should sue.
He should sue.
He should sue.
I know.
Y.K. Kim deserves all of the saved by the belt money.
That's right.
So eternity, justice and love for YKKM.
Exactly.
Yes.
Thank you.
Of course, the shady waterfront.
So we got a drug deal going on.
A bunch of a bunch of drug deal guys are there.
They got Uzi's.
What happened to the Uzi?
I don't know.
Remember without every bad guy had an Uzi.
Now they don't.
What happened to the UZ?
Everyone's got the, I guess everyone's doing a Mac 10 now.
I don't even know.
Are they even doing a Mac 10s?
I don't know.
What are the submachine guns that the gang?
These also look very fake, but are they firing them?
Because it was a lot of sparks and fire coming out of those guys.
I assume they're not actually firing bullets.
Yeah.
I say that based on what bullets do.
It's just blanks, I guess.
Have you guys ever fired a gun with blanks in it for theater or anything?
I've fired a gun.
I fired a gun.
I fired a gun in a play that had blanks in it and had to like rehearse in Arkansas,
which is like a terrible.
It was college.
Oh my God.
That's the funniest most theater kids I've ever heard.
No, no.
I've fired a gun before in a play.
It gets so much worse.
Oh, yeah?
So it was a play called Death and the Maiden.
And it was about this woman who was tortured for three years during the Pinochet.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So I had to pretend I was this woman who was tortured for three years.
Fun.
And she thinks that she, this guy who had a flat tire comes to her and her husband's
house for help. And she swears it's the guy who tortured her. And so she like ties him up and,
you know, all that kind of stuff. But they, I of course was like 20 when I did this. And had had nothing bad ever
happened to me. And so they, my professor went, we're going to tie you to this chair and blindfold you.
And then we're going to have all of the dudes from the theater department circle around you and say
fucked up shit. But these are all nerds from like Arkansas. And they were like, you're a bitch.
bitch and I'd be like Jason I was like Jason shut the fuck up
you smell
so needless to say
I wasn't good I don't think but I did get to fire
a gun with blanks in it and it was very scary
but I've also fired a shotgun
I went dove hunting
yeah see this is what I was waiting I was you've also
fired guns before because you know you're from Tennessee
you have to well never in Tennessee my family
we are not we are not going to they don't give you your high school
diploma. Yeah. We have BB guns because we have a squirrel problem at my parents' house. They eat all the bird
like seed and everything. My family doesn't, we do not like guns. The Fleming's are not a gun family.
But in Arkansas, it's like you got to do something out there. So we got these bad guys. They got
usies. We got the classic dude dipping the knife into the cocaine and sniffing it so he knows
that it's real. That's right. You know, classic 80s drug guy stuff. But creeping around.
we see the shadowy form of several ninjas all in black,
except for one guy who's all in white,
this defeats maybe this defeats the purpose of being.
A ninja, isn't a whole ninja thing being you can't see me?
I guess it's like, well, they've got to see me.
Maybe he's the distraction guy.
He's like, look at me!
And then all the other guys.
Is that one single ninja?
Just one guy, all in white.
And then, okay.
Maybe it's like how the raptors get you.
It's kind of a clever girl.
You see the one.
style it's a good good strategy um so yeah the ninjas fuck up all the drug dealers uh they take the drugs
back to the hideout but their boss their ninja boss he's mad because they didn't get the money
no more mistakes but then they got the money like it was he didn't get the money doesn't really come
back that's right that's right that's really important to the plot yeah um the ever so important
plot i saw them all lined up like that in the room all of his ninjas are lined up and then
he comes and sits down and I'm like, is this what
UCB class is like?
No, this is what it's like over the lesion when
they're doing clown school.
Where is the money for the clown
classes?
Hi-haw!
And then, okay, so then, you know,
that's kind of the cold open. The movie kicks off
into fucking high gear. We go to the
stage of, that's right, Central
Florida's hottest nightclub
where the band Dragon Sound is playing
their hit song, Friendship.
Mac, can we play a little bit of this song?
Of course.
Friends through eternity, loyalty, honesty.
So yeah, this is, so this is, this is dragon sound.
And, and, and so.
Good sound.
Fucking amazing sound.
Lyrics, just, they're just listing words.
I would just be like, it's just like Captain Planet.
Yes.
Wind, water.
Friendship.
Getting lunch sometimes.
Calling friends and family too.
Everyone is making stew.
It's like, it's just someone who's having a really pleasant time thinking about fun things.
Yeah, just nice things to do with friends.
Send a thank you note to my mom.
So the Dragon, the Dragon Sound songs were written by the woman who plays Jane.
Oh.
And the guy in the band who looks like Hall or Oates.
Oh, yes.
That guy rules.
So they're the only two non-carotty students in the movie.
Got it.
Okay.
And then they wrote all the Dragon Sound songs.
Listen.
And when this is happening the first time you see them, she's just up there dancing.
And I was like, oh, my God, is this a mighty, mighty Boston situation?
Right.
Yes.
We just talked about that.
Yeah.
So she just dances on stage with Dragon Sound.
and it's a fucking scandal, okay?
Her brother is like the main antagonist,
and he's so pissed that his sister
would be dancing on stage with this band,
and everyone talks about it all the time.
It's like, is your sister still dancing with that band?
Now, I love Dragon Sound.
They're in my top five favorite bands of all times.
Jesus.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course, rightfully.
But their music is so wussy.
It's the wussiest music,
And the fact that people would be like, how is she up there with that band singing about friendship and loyalty?
Yeah.
And eternity.
And eternity and honesty.
It is such a strange conceit in this.
Because it's one thing to be like, okay, I get the like, hey, don't date my sister thing.
That's like a natural thing.
But then they add on to it sort of this like irrational hatred for the.
band in ways that have less to do.
I mean, it's explained as my band got fired for your band.
But do we ever see their band?
No.
So there's three sets of antagonists in this movie.
There's the brothers gang.
There's the ninja gang.
And then there's the band of the Dragon Sound replace.
And they all...
And don't forget the bikers.
I think the bikers are the ninjas.
Yeah, they're biker ninjas.
Okay, the bikers are like, I think, are they with her brother?
I think the ninjas go to a separate biker rally.
Which that biker rally looks fun as fun.
Which I read something about how they hired like a real biker kind of like gang or organization.
And it's like hundreds of bikers wanted to be in the movie and he just paid them in beer.
Cool.
Yeah.
I, that totally seems true to me.
Yeah, I think basically everybody in this is just like a guy of someone in Florida who they found.
Yeah.
But yeah, so the brother leads one of the three gangs of this movie.
And yeah, he's so fucking jealous.
He's super jealous.
And so she is dating the tallest guy from Dragon Sound.
And this is like one of the shortest people in the movie.
She's very small.
So their height difference is pretty fun.
I'll never understand that, you guys.
As a super tall woman, like, you know, it's like, why?
Why would you date this super tall guy?
I guess to feel very feminine and ladylike, because I like short guys, but it's like...
Listen, I mean, she might just have wanted to get into Dragon Sound.
I don't know.
And that's the quickest way to get into Dragon Sound.
Which, by the way, I went on eBay.
There's Dragon Sound T-shirts.
Oh, yeah.
A lot of good, a lot of good merch around this movie.
Oh, yeah.
So this is the...
This is the brother who he's established is very jealous.
Again, a link to Clueless because it sounds like he wants to fuck his sister.
Yeah, it does.
And so this is him meeting the tall guy in the parking lot for the first time.
And she introduces him like, this is my friend from college.
Matt, can you play this?
Jeff, this is my friend John.
Well, Jeff, heard a lot of good things about you.
Where'd you find a son of a bitch?
He's a friend of mine from school.
A friend?
Like that.
Shut up.
And then immediately Steyer starts to fight him.
It's so jarring.
A friend, shut up.
It's just so strange because he says it like it's a totally different word.
Like, I don't know what his meaning of friend is.
Yeah.
A friend, you mean for eternity, loyalty, honesty, truth?
Yeah.
A friend, like from one of your disgusting songs that you play in Central Florida,
as hottest nightclub?
Disgusting.
This vile music.
Yeah, maybe, okay, so that's,
there's this, now there's this rift between his gang and Dragon Sound.
Dragon Sound comes in and they all like break it up.
And then we go to the club where the band that Dragon Sound replaced,
it was just these lumbering white guys.
They get mad and they have this big fight with the club owner.
And it's just this,
the funny thing about this movie is like,
one of the many funny things about this movie,
it's like,
because these guys are all karate students,
everyone just knows karate.
So the band and the guy who owned the nightclub
start doing karate on each other,
it's like this guy who owns a nightclub, okay?
Yeah, it's the whole cast.
And it really, it kind of,
for the first time ever,
I realize it's incredibly confusing
if everyone knows karate.
Because then you think any,
because usually in a movie,
you expect if someone knows karate, they're an important character in the movie,
or at least they're a goon.
And in this, I was waiting for the guy who owned the club to come back and have a purpose.
No, that's, that's it.
That was just him.
He wanted to do karate too.
Yeah, there's this.
And yeah, it kind of seems like it has that school play thing of like, well, we need a role for all the kids.
Oh, 100%.
It definitely has that.
And so someone will be a tree and someone will be like the palace guard or something.
Dude, one of my favorite lines in this movie is at the end, at the hospital.
One of the tall guy goes, thanks, nurse.
And then, like, looks at the nurse.
And you can see in his eyes, he's going, fucking Deborah.
I told you I'd let you be in the movie.
Yeah.
You could tell nurse was someone he knew.
And it was kind of incredible.
So, yeah, so they have this big fight.
And then it causes that band to want to get revenge on Dragon Sound.
we go to another Dragon Sound concert.
And so this is where we see Jane finally singing with the band.
In Sunday school clothes.
In Sunday school clothes.
By the way, none of the guys are wearing shirts.
And it is very obvious that most of the people don't know how to play their instruments.
It's crazy.
You're seeing the guy with the mullet and the, you know, the guy who looks like, oh,
holoros.
Hollerals.
He knows how to play.
Although he at one point does a guitar solo.
and a synth is playing
and you're like that's not a guitar sound
that's beside the point.
It's beside the point.
But then there's next to him
is some other karate guy
and that guy just, he's just fucking around.
Some of the guitars don't have straps.
They're just like holding them under their arms.
And even worse is the audience
is clapping and not on beat at all.
And it's like why did you even do the clapping
if no one can stay on beat?
It made me feel insane.
It made me feel insane.
Yes.
And then, and like the,
and you know, just there's this internal
battle of who's going to play at this nightclub.
It's just 10 people.
They never are able to make it look like
more than 10 people are in this place.
Yeah.
Which is too bad because honestly,
I'd love to see Dragon Sound live.
Oh my God. Yeah, if Dragon Sound toured now?
They should have just asked me.
Yeah.
I would have seen them.
They'd be like, friends for eternity.
Exactly.
It's very old now.
So yeah, so this is them playing their blatantly, angrily, anti-Ninja song against the ninja.
Here we go.
We got the offbeat clapping.
The clapping.
The clapping.
Hey, fuck, hey, fuck.
Hey, fuck.
So, yeah.
That's them.
The clapping just sounds like people are trying to catch butterflies.
It's what the clapping sounds like.
It's really wild because I think I assumed that the clap track was live and then they just mixed it in with the song that they had pre-recorded in the studio.
I hate that the claps are in the actual.
It's baked in the goddamn song fight.
They need to redo it without the clap track because it is.
Or it's like, did they not?
line it up right or something? No, because it goes in and out of being, you know, on beat.
On beat. So like, I think it just, I think he was just trying to get this exported as fast as
good. They're like, the movie's out tomorrow. Yeah. But it is, yeah, that's too bad because I really
liked against the ninja. But I do, like, I do love how everyone's yelling, Taekwon, Taekwondo.
Yeah. Did you guys take Taekwondo and stuff? I took a karate class.
In judo.
Oh, judo.
But I think it was traditional karate.
Okay.
Yeah, I don't know the difference between the two, but Taekwondo looks like it's a lot of kicking, I guess.
I think it's a lot of kicking.
Yeah.
Yeah, these guys kick everybody.
Yeah, and they got high kicks for days, man.
Yeah, high kicks.
They got jump kicks.
But also, they've also, our lead dude who created this movie has this move where he takes his toes and pinches someone's nose.
Right.
They do that a couple of times.
And the bottom of his feet are like black with so soot.
And it's so fucking gross.
I'm like, stop putting your feet on their feet.
The men in this movie do not wear shirts or shoes.
And sometimes their pants are just unbuttoned.
Can I just say real quick?
I want to give a shout out to friends by Dragon Sound.
I just looked at the views.
It's got almost a million views on YouTube.
Yeah.
And that makes me feel good because I was listening to that song going,
this is a legit banger.
And when you told me that, you know, this movie nearly bankrupted,
the guy who made it and like, you know, nobody saw it,
but it had a little bit of a, oh, it's, you know,
people are finally, you know, giving it its do or whatever.
I was like, yeah, but that's sad because this song is, you know,
I know good music.
It's like, I know what a hit is.
And now I feel good about myself again because I was right.
And I think that these songs have been put into some movies and video games since then.
So hopefully, you know, people are kind of like, you know.
Yeah, this is very video game kind of music.
I love it.
It's a very video game kind of movie.
It's about the same plot as any arcade game from this time where you put in a quarter
and you were just a guy walking on the street and then you had to fight ninjas for no reason.
They should eat chicken they find on the ground to get their health back.
Exactly.
Exactly.
Just eat a roast chicken that's in an oil drum.
There's a moment earlier, and I want to create a sting, Matt.
There's a moment earlier where a guy pours beer on the dragon sound people's heads to try to
humiliate them.
And that bummed me out just like in steel magnolias where they poured out perfectly good beer.
So I would like there to be a wasting booze.
Because people throw drinks in people's faces, all that kind of stuff.
Waste of booze.
Yeah, you got it.
Wasteing, booze.
There it is.
The hot new sting that everybody's talking about.
So now the
Dragon Sound's enemy band
approaches her brother's gang
to talk about getting revenge.
This is the clip Matt played at the top.
But the leader of that band,
by the way, who never changes his bloody head wound.
He has a head dressing
with the bloody head wound.
He does not change it.
So, and this guy, he's like,
he's like, they stole my job, and I got my ass kicked.
This guy's constantly telling everyone how he got his ass kicked.
I love that.
And how good they are at Taekwondo.
And how good they are at kicking his ass.
Yeah, I fucking suck.
So back at the, so this leads to this big fight where Dragon Sound takes on fucking 50 guys.
Yeah, they pour a beer on them.
And this guy with the head wound, he has like a chain and he,
very gingerly whips the hood of their car with his chain
in a way that suggested he was supposed to break the window,
but someone said,
my dad's letting us borrow this car for the shoot,
and we can't mess it up.
Yeah.
So you have to just gingerly tap the hood with the chain.
Yeah, it's a really cool car too.
I was very worried for the car in that scene.
Me too.
And because it's like a white convertible.
It's really cute.
Yeah, great car.
So Dragon Sound beats up all.
all these random guys.
And then they're back at their house
where I guess they all live in the same house.
Yeah, they're orphans.
They're orphans.
So this is,
which we did not know
until like halfway through the movie.
So this is when we reveal that.
They're walking around the house
with no shirts and unbuttoned pants.
And Jim, the guy who
who plays the keyboards in Dragon Sound,
he gets a letter and everybody's obsessed with this letter.
Jim got a letter.
Joe was that letter.
Jim, what's in this letter?
It goes on for five.
minutes with Jim's letter.
And then we learned, I don't know exactly what's in it, but Jim is expecting a letter from
the state department.
He's trying to find his dad that's been missing.
And they get mad at him initially because they're like, I thought we were all orphans.
You never told us you had a dad, which is a really funny.
We're the orphan band.
It's really funny to hear that line before they tell us their orphans.
Yeah.
It's like, well, you didn't tell us you had a dad.
is not a normal sentence.
So this is Jim's dad plot that will
spool.
This is the best acting
for the dumbest
like writing I've ever heard of.
He like really gets emotional
and cries for real and you're like
wow, he must have gotten this part
because he can do taekwondo
but he can also like cry.
Cry on command. Yeah, Jim is crying
through most of the movie.
Yeah. So we
So this is kind of Jim's plot, and Jim's given it as all. He really is. He has an iconic line reading that we'll get to a little bit later. And then later, the guys in Dragon Sound, they're just having fun. They're in that same convertible. They're cruising along the beach and they're cat-calling women. Yeah, that's what you want the heroes of your movie to do. Harass women on the street.
Well, and you know, we talked about how Clue is a boob movie. This is a butt movie, y'all. Like, it is just they're closing up on butts the whole time.
You do see some biker gang lady boobs at some point.
But I don't think those are boobs to write home about.
Listen, yeah, YK Kim, clearly a butt guy.
We see a lot of butts in high-wasted 80 swimsuits.
In fact, one of the guys that are cat calls are,
they don't make buns like that down at the bakery.
It's pretty good.
I've been down to the bakery and these are different buns, okay?
The ones at the bakery are Chabata.
Yeah.
I have to say for a movie that feels like it was written at an ESL like class,
they don't make buns like that at the bakery.
I was like, damn, that's actually bars.
I don't know who told them that one, but yeah, that was good.
And so Jim, our guy who's missing his dad, has to do some cat calls.
And they, and I think we agree Jim's a pretty good actor.
Sure.
These cat calls are coming out so half-assed.
I'm just, part of me thinks that, hey, I can tell why Jim's heart's not in this.
You know, you can kind of tell that maybe Jim is not interested in, in these particular,
yes, and in these ladies.
I don't think, yes, that's what it feels like, which is a weird thing to notice.
You know, it's like, yeah, that is why.
Yeah, I love their tits and their mouths and their hair.
Give me a nice wet vagina all day.
He loves it.
I like it because it's moist.
Spill with mucus, sign me up.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
And so one of the Dragon Sound guys runs up to these random women and says,
Madam, may I have a little kiss, please?
And then they push him down and he just rolls around like between these two women and they are slapping him.
It's anyway.
They seem like they know them.
You know, it's like, again, it's like I'm not sure the intention with this because we know everyone in this movie knows each other.
We know that they're all friends.
They're all friends.
And they're all like, let's have fun making a movie.
But in the narrative of the movie, I'm not sure if the women are actually mad.
Which I guess it's good that it's ambiguous because you don't want them to actually be mad.
As someone who always has a taser with them, that guy would have gotten tased.
Oh, yeah.
May I have a little kiss, please?
Madam.
Oh, madam.
Bring Jim back here.
At least he's afraid of me.
Yeah.
Let me.
Oh, nice.
I have my taser.
Oh, wow.
That was a good sound.
Nice.
We got some live sound effects.
Live tasing.
Live tasing.
Hot live tasing.
Yeah, I've always got it with me.
I did taste myself by accident once.
Yeah, that sounds right.
Because it was in my purse and I put the purse on my lap in the train and it was like on in there.
It's just a little button and it wasn't great.
I didn't like it.
Yeah.
Well, hey, we're almost at the thrilling finale of the Miami Connection.
Let's take a little break and we'll talk about it when we come back.
We're back.
It's free with ads.
We're talking about Miami Connection.
So we have the ninja gang who we haven't seen in a minute.
They go to a biker rally, which, yeah, as Emily said, it probably was just Florida biker people.
This is a real Florida-ass scene here.
Looks like fucking fun.
It looks like a blast.
A bar I would 100% go hang out of us.
And you know, women are just lifting their shirts.
Guys are mooning in the camera.
Yeah, it's very random.
And then we have a song playing in the background called Tough Guy, which is pretty tough song.
It's cool.
Yeah.
I have a tough.
A little bit of it right here.
Oh, do you have a little tough guy, man?
Yeah, yeah.
Here is a little bit of tough guy by, it says the Lloyd's Richards band.
Hell yeah.
So, yeah, here's some of that.
Anyways, it goes on like that.
See, that should have been the opposing bands, like, songs.
Right.
The German and the holograms need the misfits.
They need the misfits.
There should be a battle of the band scene where they play tough guy.
Yeah, they could have been playing at the biker, like, ball.
That'd have been great.
Yeah, so that seems pretty random, very fun.
Later at the Dragon Sound House, they're all having a good time.
The bros, they're hanging out, having breakfast, and Mark is shoving grapes in everybody's mouth.
You know, Emily, maybe you don't know this because you're a girl, but Matt, isn't it fun when you and your bros just shove grapes at each other's mouth?
Yeah, dude.
And it's, you know what?
I also love being straight.
It's just a straight thing that I do.
You and other heterosexuals love.
Me and my other heterosexual friends.
Pinching noses with pincetoses and shoving grapes in your pants.
That's right.
No shirts, dicks out.
We don't get.
We don't get.
In mouth.
That's right.
Normal guy stuff.
So while they're doing this, they learned that the evil, so Jane's brothers gang has kidnapped Tom,
the Holin-Oats guy.
And this is maybe kind of practical.
is like why we don't see him doing any karate is
because yeah he's like not one of the guys from the karate school
or taekwondo school I guess.
Yeah.
So they go to rescue him.
They kill Jane's brother.
And then that kind of wraps up.
And they go back to the Dragon Sound House.
Which you know that dragon house smells crazy.
Yeah, probably smells awful.
And then who's the guy who's who's, who's,
they all have these generic just man names like Jack, John, Jim.
The guy whose dad ran out.
Jim. There we go. He gets a letter and he is he's ecstatic. Matt, can we play that clip?
My father. My father. I found my father.
Oh my God.
Great. It's great.
An iconic line reading.
I love to my dad to know. I'm not a door for.
Oh, that's so funny.
We have to leave the bed if I'm not an orphan?
He loves his dad.
So they all decide to pool their money to buy Jim a suit so he can meet his dad who is coming to the Orlando airport tomorrow?
I guess that's what the letter said.
And then Jane is there.
She immediately forgives them for killing her brother.
She's like, that's fine.
And they get Jim a suit and on their way to the airport, they get attacked by the ninja gang in.
in what is very clearly a public park.
You can see the like hiking trail markers
and the like plaques that tell you about local plants.
So there's this huge fight in the public park
that is so fucking brutal.
Everyone has swords.
And these guys who just previously had been kicking people away
are just like stabbing people as like blood flies in their face
and yelling.
Definitely like oh, like oh, the budget.
You know what I mean?
Like this was the part where I felt like there was a blood.
blood budget that they were like well we have this blood yeah fake head budget and we're not gonna
we're not gonna not use the blood i already paid for it you know and it is i think the longest
fight in the whole movie and i gotta say filled with long fights yeah the movie's mostly fights yeah
it is and i i just zone out and look at my phone during the fight i'm gonna be real with you
i like got up and i went it's tinkle time and then these guys chop each other's heads off i have to pee
Beep.
Oh my God.
His fighting is very repetitive.
Yes.
So, yeah.
So that happens.
Jim gets more,
gets wounded.
They're able to kill the like final ninja guy,
the guy who's all in white.
They finally like kill him.
And they take Jim to the hospital.
And wouldn't you know it?
Jim's going to survive.
And his dad shows up.
Jim's dad is younger than everyone.
Yes.
who just has the most high school theater ass white spray paint in his hair.
Yeah.
He looks 16.
It really just suggests he's the only other black guy we know.
A hundred percent.
We need a black guy to play Jim's dad.
We're going to make him old.
We found a 16-year-old guy.
It's so unconvincing.
Is the oldest teen?
We don't know if he's a teen.
Oh, yeah.
Maybe he's the oldest teen.
It's kind of a different way at oldest team.
Let's play this thing anyway.
Yeah, we have to.
Oldest young.
Oldest teen.
Yeah.
So yeah.
Teenest old.
Teenest old.
Yeah.
Don't we have that?
I think we have teenest old.
But this is good.
We have teenest old.
And they all agree that everybody is fine now.
Nothing else bad will happen.
They all go home.
And we get a final on-screen message via text.
Only through the elimination of violence, can we achieve world peace?
What?
What?
That features multiple decapitations.
And constant fighting.
Constant fighting.
It is such a wild way to end this movie because you're also like, again, I didn't know that this was just like the brainchild of the guy who's, you know, ran a karate class or whatnot.
But watching that, it felt like it was their way of atoning for making a violent movie.
But it also makes absolutely, it's just one of those.
messages that is just so milk toast that you're like, why even, you don't need this?
What's this for?
You're just going to let us know that, JK, it's beautiful.
It's beautiful.
I love eliminate violence.
Yes, eliminate violence, and then you won't have violence anymore, and then you have peace.
I'm just like, yeah, this is beautiful, dog.
It is not actually, if you stay through the credits, it does say Dragon Sound will return
in Avengers' time.
No, God, damn.
I knew.
I knew it.
I'm kicking myself for not doing that during steel magnolias because steel magnolias will return.
Adventures Dooms Day is maybe the funniest version of that.
Yeah, that's true.
That would have worked.
Anyway, that's Miami connection.
We're going to tell you what we thought of it.
But first, you know, we're going to do the hunk watch.
It's hunk watch.
Any big thoughts on the hunks of this film?
I'm going to go with the evil brother.
on this one.
I thought he was pretty hunky,
but I also like our big tall,
Beto O'Rourke, the guy.
I know he's like super tall
and gangly and stuff,
but he was cute.
I don't know.
I thought he was cute.
Yeah.
I thought the leader of the evil ninjas
was super hot.
Yeah, you're right.
He's always like dressed kind of cool.
Even when he went to the like the biker gang party,
he was wearing like a cravat.
And he had cool sunglasses.
Those sunglasses.
is rocked, yeah.
I'm going to go with
hauler oats.
Hall or Oates. Not sure which one.
I don't even know the name of the character.
Probably Tom.
Yeah.
But watching him play in Dragon Sound,
I was, like, I was mesmerized by it.
I was like, he's got the mallet,
he's got the beautiful mustache, no shirt on,
and the song rules.
my guy. Yep, there we go. All right. And then the shirt off bodies on these guys are the most
okayest, um, in shape. They're in good shape. No one's in bad. They're in okayest shape. Like they're not,
they're in karate shape, I guess, because it's like they're not super jacked. You have to be like,
if you're super jacked, I guess you're just cage fighting. Right. That's what that's for.
All right. Those are the hunks of Miami connection. We're going to tell you what we thought about the movie
right after this.
We're back. It's free with ads. We're going to tell you what we thought of Miami Connection. But first, we want to tell you about our bonus episodes. We like shows. Okay?
We'll send Dragon Sound to chop you.
They'll not be your friend no more. We'll send one of three gangs after you.
You'll be like, which one is this? And we'll be like, I don't know. I don't know.
Whichever one is free that day.
Yeah, exactly. All of them I'm assuming.
Yeah, probably a lot of free time.
Unemployed gangs. Miami connection.
All right. Let's rank the Miami Connection on a scale of 1 to 10 super loud commercials.
I'll go last because this is kind of my baby. Emily, die into here. What did you think of Miami Connection?
I mean, the music is solid. I loved it a lot. It's an A for effort for sure. But those fight scenes are so long. It was tough for me. I think that movie is like, is it an hour?
and a half long or something. It's probably the longest hour and a half of my life.
But the parts that were not fighting were really fun. And I had a great time. I think it's an ultimate
background movie at a party. I'm going to give it a 6.5.
Nice.
Matt, what did you think of Miami Connection? I am going to give it the same. I'm going to give it a 6.5. I was going to give it a 6.5. I was going to give it a 6.5. I was going to give it a 6. But
But then you up the game with point five, and I feel bad not giving it that extra bump.
Yeah, I actually found it surprisingly enjoyable.
It's too long in terms of the karate scenes, the karate scenes.
But at the same time, I'm also not the target audience for pretty much any karate scenes.
So as I'm watching it, I'm thinking, wow, someone who appreciates this kind of filmmaking might think it's good.
so I want to leave room for that.
And the music is great, and the soul of this is really bright and pleasant.
And as the movie went on, it became clear to me that this was not so much just a random, you know, cocaine elevator pitch by some Nepo baby from the 80s.
but instead an independent film from someone who just had a group of friends
and wanted to make a cool karate movie,
it made me really enjoy it.
And I could see the friendship in the movie,
and there wasn't a dark underbelly,
the same way there is for the room,
where you can really see into his psyche,
into Tommy Wazzo's psyche.
And this one,
it's like,
the psyche is clean.
It's actually very pleasant and nice.
And I hope we're nothing but the best for the filmmakers.
So, yeah,
six and five.
Yeah.
I'm going to give this a, like, I think it's a bad movie nine.
Okay.
Yeah.
I think it is like, I think, yeah, if you're just like looking for a movie to watch by yourself, it will be a little plotting.
These fight scenes are so long.
I think if you're just curious about this thing, you can get a sense of it with clips.
There's tons of clips everywhere.
Listen to the music.
But if you're like bad movie night or if you have a little, you know, indie theater in your neighborhood that's showing this at midnight, fucking go.
it's so much fun with an audience.
But yeah, no reason to like sit and watch it by yourself.
But definitely check out the music.
Definitely check out the clips.
Yeah, I think it is like an infinitely more fun version of the room or Burdemic.
And yeah, just a blast every time I watch it.
All right.
That's Miami Connection.
What about plugs?
Anybody got anything going on?
Once again, I'm always going to be plugging the Antecraft.
