Starting point is 00:00:28 This is Free With Ads, the podcast that asked the question, why pay a movie theater 15 bucks to see Digger when you could go online for free and watch a big swing box office bomb that at least has a bunch of sexy pig ladies? I should mention that I do not know for sure that Digger doesn't have sexy pig ladies. I have not seen Digger. I'm Jordan Morris. And I'm Emily Fleming. Today's movie is the 1996 adaptation of the island of Dr. Morrow, the mutant animal movie that puts the meow in wow, this movie is bananas. With us, as always is the super producer,
Starting point is 00:01:05 the he freak, Matt Lieb, hitting us with those drops from the very edge of madness. If there's no more pain, then is there no more law? What's up, guys? That is not what I thought you were going to pick. Is there no more law? That's actually where my back tattoo comes from.
Starting point is 00:01:27 It's a lot of words. It's on your back, dude. Yeah, yeah. I have a big back. Yeah, sure do. Baby got back. That song is about me. Hey, this is cool.
Starting point is 00:01:36 We're going to talk about the island of Dr. Moreau. It's week two of Halloween. And we have a very special, very exciting guest here to celebrate with us. He's a writer. He's a director. And the front man of the rock band Power Man 5,000. It's Spider-1. Hi, Spider-1.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Oh, yay. Hell yes. I can't believe I'm here. I can't believe it either. Most people don't answer our emails. No, I know. And I, and I took a long time to schedule this, so I apologize. It's fine.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Well, it's also a long time, like, kind of full circle moment because you have, you have a connection to us through Good Mythical Morning. Yes. And what a serendipitous connection it was because. I never knew if Emily. was actually a fan or just fucking with me. No. We are real fans. No, no, we are real fans, but no, we were.
Starting point is 00:02:36 And I honestly, either way, I'm fine with it. We just say that this all got started because one of Emily's got started because one of Emily's goth characters she does on Good Mythical Morning would often wear a Power Man 5,000 t-shirt. And that kind of like started the connection that culminated in us talking about the island of Dr. Moreau. Yeah, true. Hey. It makes total sense.
Starting point is 00:02:59 We're going to talk about that. But first, we want to get to know our amazing guest that is here in Halloween month. So honestly, the fact that it took a little bit kind of perfect. We want to get to know you in a segment we call Talk to Guest. Talk to Guest. That's a spider one. That's a hook. There's a lot of them in this show.
Starting point is 00:03:20 And they're all very distinct from each other. I like that. It's just all one note. No. Yeah. You're going to be. You're going to be humming it on the way to... It's like my songs.
Starting point is 00:03:29 We're all just one note, doesn't it. You're going to be humming it on the way to Trader Joe's tomorrow, I promise. Speaking of your band, which is awesome. I think Emily and I have both seen Power Man 5,000 live. Oh, thank you. It's pretty thoroughly rocked off. We went for my birthday a couple of years ago. That was pretty awesome.
Starting point is 00:03:50 A connection to this podcast, the band has had music in a lot of movies. We love a movie soundtrack. Is there a particular movie moment that's used your music that you just totally love? I mean, there's honestly been so many and not only movies, but video games. Yeah, we've been. Tony Hawk, pro skater. That's right, which I will circle back to the movie, but Tony Hawk, it's interesting because I was never a gamer.
Starting point is 00:04:16 So I had no idea, like, the cultural impact that game had on so many people and how massive it was until like year after year. And even to this day, people should. show up at our shows with like the the old raggedy cartridge from like whatever year that came 1999. Yeah. But the funny thing is back in when we were assigned to this label called DreamWorks, late 90s. And it was it was not fashionable or cool to say yes to be in movies and video games.
Starting point is 00:04:49 Like it was sort of seen as selling out a bit and you tried to wait for the, you know, just the right thing. and I went to the label and I said anything any movie any I don't care what it is because I figured look if it's a hit
Starting point is 00:05:05 and everyone thinks we're cool and geniuses and if it's not no one knows the difference so it's so like it was just a thing that we really embraced so we were part of the Freddy versus Jason soundtrack
Starting point is 00:05:18 which became my daughter's one of her favorite horror movie she's seven but she discovered Freddy versus Jason when she was about five. And it was so, I was so proud to be part of that. Scream 3,
Starting point is 00:05:32 uh, Little Nikki. Little Nikki. That's the drop that always stuck with me. Because that little Nikki soundtrack had some bangers on it. And, I'm being real with you. That is when I discovered the song when,
Starting point is 00:05:45 when worlds collide. There you go. I was like, that's a good ass soundtrack. Not from the Matrix, but from Little Nikki. No. I don't think we're in the Matrix.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Are you all in the Matrix? Yes. I'm pretty sure. I don't think so. maybe. I mean, it's possible. Yeah, you said yes to everything. We said to everything. So, you know, and then there was one that we did a song for,
Starting point is 00:06:04 it was an animated film called Titan A.E. I don't know. Nerds out there. Remember that movie, which was funny because it was the first time when usually you just do a song, you send it in, or they use an existing song. But this one, they wanted us to write an original song for the movie, which was pretty cool. So we wrote this song and they said, hey,
Starting point is 00:06:25 you can come down and check out like, you know, check out the movie before anyone else sees it. And, you know, my dumb ass starts, like, giving notes on the movie. It's an anime. It's done. Like, it's like, you know, like, maybe the villain could have been a little. Yeah. And I'm like, they probably are just like, get this asshole out of here, you know. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:06:45 But yeah, so I don't know. I don't know if I have a favorite, but they were all, they're all cool. I mean, it was always very exciting to go to a movie theater and hear your song like, you know, Dracula 2000 was another one. Oh, that's awesome. You were in Dracula 2000. I think that could be prime for free with ads episode maybe. Yeah, I bet it's free with ads.
Starting point is 00:07:08 Yeah. Probably is. Well, hey, in addition to making music that goes into horror movies, check out this segue. You also write and direct horror movies, including the new one, Big Baby. Big Baby, yes. I want to know what was some of your, what are some of your early horror memories? What is the first stuff that, that grabbed you? Yeah, I mean, my earliest, earliest horror movie memories were, I grew up in Massachusetts,
Starting point is 00:07:37 and back in the day when there were like three channels. And there was a local channel called Channel 56. And every weekend they would have a thing called Creature Double Feature. And so they would show, you know, just Godzilla movies or I was a teenage wereworn. if anything, like stuff like that. So that was like what I was, you know, first grade. So those were the first things, you know, the 1930s universal stuff or the original King Kong. But it really wasn't until the 80s where VHS culture came into play.
Starting point is 00:08:12 And I would ride by bike to the local video store and go straight to the horror sci-fi section and look for the most depraved, disgusting artwork. And then you get that. So then it became... Those box covers in the movie store, like they board their way into your brain, you know? Yeah, I mean, they were brilliant. And that's how... You know, this was obviously before you saw trailers and YouTube and all, you know.
Starting point is 00:08:37 So the cover art was all you had to suck you in. So when you saw basket cases, you know, or faces of death or, you know, it's Friday the 13th. I mean, these were the things that... Stripped to kill part two. Sure. And pants. Ants.
Starting point is 00:08:53 Yeah. So those were, you know, the formative years for sure. And then just have been, I mean, I've always been a fan of horror and sci-fi and comic books and all that shit. You know, I just grew up sort of Uber nerd. And then music kind of obviously made a lot of, you know, growing up a punk rock kid. Anything that felt like you weren't involved in the mainstream of society or culture always appeal to me. You know, it was like, whatever's happening. let me run as far away from it as I can.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Nice. A big baby, and let me know if I'm messing up the premise of this. It is a slasher movie, but kind of a self-aware slasher movie where a screenwriter's horror movie is kind of coming to life before his eyes. Yes. Where did the premise of this start in your brain? Yeah, a friend of mine said it's like if Charlie Kaufman wrote Friday the 13th, you know, I'll take that as a...
Starting point is 00:09:49 I'll take that as a... I'm right. I'm writing to check now. Yeah. Yes. Can I put that on the Blu-ray cover? Because that is amazing. A couple places.
Starting point is 00:10:01 I mean, one thing, as far as the aesthetic of the big baby character and that adult-sized baby mask, I remember going to a convention called Monster Palooza probably 20 years ago. And it was the first time I had laid eyes on those crying baby masks and, you know, seeing an adult. put them on and I just thought it was the most terrifying thing I'd ever seen so that always stuck with me and then when I went to make my first movie which is which is an anthology called
Starting point is 00:10:31 Allegoria I had had a scene in there where these two girls were watching a horror movie so it was sort of movie within a movie and I was like I have to come up with the dumbest horror movie possible like it was like it's degrade and it was big baby so I was like what it could be the dumbest thing I could do
Starting point is 00:10:48 so like all This is kind of part of a shared spider one of us. Yeah. Like all great ideas or terrible ideas, they take out a life of their own. So after Allegoria came out, the one consistent comment I kept getting was like, when's the big baby movie coming? That's the best part of the movie. And it's like, so the throwaway ridiculousness that I tried to create became what was most
Starting point is 00:11:14 popular about the movie. So just like the character in Big Baby, the screenwriter who thinks it's a terrible idea, I did too, but then I convinced myself it wasn't and ended up taking it seriously and making Big Baby. So here we are. Yeah, sort of long way around to get, yeah. I don't want to like, I don't want to make you drop any, any spoilers or anything that you don't want to. But in your horror movie career, is there a kill you're particularly proud of? Yeah, I mean, there's, Big Baby has the most of them because my film before, that was a film called Little Bites, which was much more of a morose.
Starting point is 00:11:51 sort of dark slow burn and it didn't have like as much gore so big baby the third act is just back to back to back to back kills and um there's some great ones in there i think my favorite in that movie it starts it's a scene with chas bono who chas plays a cat loving jesus freak who is you know it says he has a poster on his wall that said Jesus is my savior. Cats are my therapy. And so this is so the scene, I don't know, I'll give it away.
Starting point is 00:12:29 The movie's already out. Spoilers in case anyone is worried about it. He's praying at his hairless cat has gone missing and he's praying to God before bed to return his cat to him. And also another season of Battlestar Galactica, please, if that's possible. So yeah, for that.
Starting point is 00:12:49 And so, big baby shows up with the cat returns poor Graham's cat and proceeds to impale his head with a crucifix and then cut his head off with an ex and hang it back on the wall with the crucifix sticking out of his head.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Wow. Incredible. It's a family, family film. It's a family film. I told my four-year-old, you know, now that she's four, it's time for us to go see Big Baby. Well, she thought it was a sequel to Boss Baby. Right, right, right.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Which is a bigger boss baby? Yeah. Amazing. And we do need to talk about Island Dr. Moreau, but I do, there is one other thing I want to ask you about. When you watch the trailer for Big Baby, there is a smash cut to executive producer, share. Yeah, that's true. Please tell us more. Yeah, we just made that up.
Starting point is 00:13:42 We just put it on there, figuring it would get us some press. Oh, really? No. Oh, you can't do that? No, you can't do that. Very litigious. Sherr became aware of us. We had made a movie called Barry the Bride, which her son Chaz was in.
Starting point is 00:14:01 And she became sort of intrigued with what us crazy kids were doing over there, you know, making our play or whatever, you know. And she just started asking a lot of questions about it and then decided that she somehow wanted to be involved. So she came on board as an executive producer for Little Bites. She came out to see the world premiere screening at Beyond Fest here in L.A. It was super exciting. And then she said, what's next? And Big Baby was next.
Starting point is 00:14:30 And she just said, just make sure you give me more blood on the next one. And we did. Share gives good notes. Share gives good notes. It was one of those things where, you know, I mean, you know, Chaz had been involved with some of our films. And so he, you know, through that connection, share became aware of us. and but it really it's it's one of those things where you know i've had many of these moments in my life where you just sort of like life is fucking crazy like how did i get this is
Starting point is 00:15:00 one of them for me personally yeah but the share thing had to be the strangest in a way you know because i look i'm old enough to remember sunny and share right i would watch that as a kid and you know my mom would want what chair are going to wear this week you know and And so to, and then, you know, she has been an icon for decades and won an Academy Award and's done everything possible. So for her to even know that I exist is crazy, right? And then also for her to even, you know, when she saw little bites, she came up to me after and gave me a big hug. And she was like, that was great. And I was like, oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:15:43 You know, so. And then when you sit with her, you know, you're talking about your little. Rinky Dink movie and she starts referencing like, you know, you know what Jack said to me once? Jack told him, and I was like, you mean Jack Nicholson, right? Wow.
Starting point is 00:15:55 And then she's like, I think I have a, I think I have an old VHS somewhere of like an early cut of apocalypse now that Francis let me have. And like these are her reference points, right? Like so she's using it to prop up the uneven end of a table or something. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:16:11 right. I'm sure. That kind of aura, just to be around. I think is such a valuable thing, right? You know what I mean? I mean, she wasn't on set giving us no. So I mean, she just kind of said, go have fun.
Starting point is 00:16:25 But like, it still is a powerful thing to have that be in your orbit, you know? So I just tried to like suck in whatever energy I could. Wow. Yeah, it's crazy. Incredible. Well, yes, we are very excited to see. But more importantly, yes. The island of Dr. Monroe.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Yes. On this guy. Before we move on, I will say, so Big Baby is out now. You can stream it on Amazon and Apple and all the, but it will be going to Shutter on October 30th. I don't know if this will be out by October 30th. Oh, it will. Shutter is sort of if people out there don't know.
Starting point is 00:17:03 It's kind of like the Netflix for horror movies. It is all horror movies. They do original stuff. It's really an amazing platform for anyone in horror movies. So October 30th, before you head out for Halloween parties, he can watch Big Baby. Put on Big Baby. Yes, we love a party movie.
Starting point is 00:17:22 We sure do. We're about to talk about the island of Dr. Moreau. But before we do, we should let you know that this movie features suicide. So if that's not something you want to hear us talk about, we're going to play some music and give you a chance to find another episode. Hey, we're back. It's Free With Ads. We are here with Spider-One, the director of Big Baby,
Starting point is 00:17:52 the frontman of Power Man, 5000. And we're going to talk about the island of Dr. Moreau. Okay, before we do, let's go around the horn. Has anyone seen this before? This is the 90s version starring Val, Val Kilmer, and Marlon Brando. Anybody seen it? Nope, never saw it. I've always heard that it's one of the most legendary movie disasters of all time,
Starting point is 00:18:12 and there's a documentary about it, Lost Souls, that is about how horrible it was, which I did watch that right after watching this, and is it crazy? But no, so I was stoked to watch it. I was already expecting it to be bad. So, you know, I don't know. No, we'll see what I think about it. I saw it in theaters. No.
Starting point is 00:18:32 Check it out. It's always wild. The movies Matt has and hasn't seen. And he saw it twice in theater. I believe it was. What did you think you missed the first time, man? The era of me seeing these movies that were in and out of theaters is the era in which the Leeb family did not have television because my dad was convinced it was giving us bad grades.
Starting point is 00:18:57 And to make up for that, he took. took us out to movies at random intervals. And this was the one he decided we were seeing that weekend. And, man, did this ever have an effect on me? It was a pig lady titties, wasn't it? I mean, the big lady titties for me, I think those were my first tits. And I was just like, hell yeah, this rules. I didn't know there was going to be so many.
Starting point is 00:19:22 Yeah, exactly. I like that pig lady because there's more tits than usual. It's full frontal. But, yes, I saw it and I was very stoked to see it again. Yeah. I shockingly had never seen it. Like, I was almost ashamed that I hadn't seen it, but I was very excited that this was the pick. And I was wondering if there is a reason why this was the pick?
Starting point is 00:19:45 You thought that is it just random or you thought I would enjoy it? You were definitely a factor. You were definitely, because we were thinking like this is, this seems like something you either would have seen or maybe would have made in a different, you know, like, I think this feels very spider one to me. Okay. I'm glad I got to see it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:08 Yeah. I have also not seen it, but just knew it through pop culture. It was this huge bomb, you know, one of the great bombs of the 90s with like Battlefield Earth and Waterworld. And like there's so many parodies of this. Like mini me from Austin Powers is like a parody of the little guy. Which I, oh yeah. It took me a second.
Starting point is 00:20:26 And when that was happening, when he's up on the piano, I was like, wait a minute. Is this what mini me came from that immediately went and looked for that clip and was like, why would Canadian Mike Myers want to parody this movie specifically? Yeah, I think it was just so, it was just such a punchline at the time, like how bad this movie was. So, so yeah, I guess I knew it through Paris. It was on South Park and yeah, I knew it through parodies. So kind of fun to actually sit down and watch the thing. By the way, Spider 1, I just want to tell you this.
Starting point is 00:20:56 The reason why I think that when Worlds Collide is in the Matrix is I looked it up. When Napster existed, they would tag it as it was like they would mislabel it as part of the Matrix soundtrack. Okay. There you go. And unfortunately, I consumed your music for free then. Yeah, I was going to say, while you were stealing music, you'd say. Emily, Mail, Spider, a check for $7. Well, listen, I go to the shows.
Starting point is 00:21:26 Yeah, that's right. Well, jokes on you. You downloaded the Matrix soundtrack, and I wasn't. So, yeah, the movie starts out a bunch of creepy eyeballs and amoebas and microscope stuff. It's all very 90s. Our first scene happens. It's a plane crash. We get a little voiceover from David Thuleus.
Starting point is 00:21:47 He is one of three plane crash survivors in a raft. They are fighting kind of like animals. Makes you think, doesn't it? That's like a metaphor. Yeah, and he's kind of the last one alive. It doesn't really say whether or not he killed the other two guys. It's kind of a mystery, but he's the last guy on the raft, and he gets picked up by a boat,
Starting point is 00:22:09 and the guy tending to his wounds is a Val Kilmer vest, no shirt, and now we didn't have a word for it at the time, but what he is wearing, I think, could be described as slutty little glasses. I think that's the term. I think that is the term. for what Valcomer is wearing, yes. Yes, I think I'm wearing a good representation of slutty little glasses, too, but I don't know
Starting point is 00:22:32 if it's... They're not round enough. I think it's when men wear this style specifically. That's right. Yeah, I think it's a, it's like a kind of a nerdy, cute guy. Right. But they're light glasses, like light little ones that you hear them click open
Starting point is 00:22:47 when they whip them onto their face. It's a skanky little Harry Potter glasses. Yeah, skanky little Harry Potter glasses. There you go. So Val Kilmer looking about as valley as it gets. He's tending to David Thuleus. He says he's going to take him to an island where they're going to call for help. He asks him, are you a doctor?
Starting point is 00:23:08 He's like, more like a vet. Yuck, yuck, yuck. There's all these little animal jokes before the animals come. It's like, you know what movie are watching audience, right? Because this is a remake. This is the third version of this movie. Really? I thought there was one in 1977.
Starting point is 00:23:25 Yeah. Is there a newer one too? Or my... Oh, I hope so. They didn't think of Lord of the Flies maybe or something. Well, they definitely made a new Lord of the Flies, but there was a Island of Dr. Morrow movie in 1977. And I believe in the 60s as well. Hold on.
Starting point is 00:23:42 Let me check that out. Oh, no. 1932 was the other one. Yeah. Island of Lost Souls. There's another sexy animal movie. It's called Zootopia. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:52 I was thinking when I was watching this, it's due for another remake, and I might be the guy to do it. Do it, please do it. Oh, please. I don't know what the rights are. Can I be the one with all the tits? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:03 Can I be a tit? You get all be tits. We'll all be tits. Yay. I bring my own horse legs. You got to bring them from home. So they're, they're tending to a little cage of rabbits on the island.
Starting point is 00:24:19 Val is being very tender with the rabbits and he like hands it to David Thuleus to kiss everyone is just so weird to each other in this movie and horny and horny and I think something that's happening you know something I read I had not watched the doc Emily but I have kind of read a little bit about the production and I think people were improvising like crazy
Starting point is 00:24:41 and this is like some shit Val Kilmer thinks is funny like giving it to him to kiss and then Val just breaks its neck so there's a lot of just weirdness Well, it's also very confusing as to why the rabbits are there, because as we learn further on, there's like laws against killing things. Right. So why is he bringing these rabbits that are probably meant to be game, right? Don't they seem like they would be for predators to chase?
Starting point is 00:25:10 Why are he, what he's keeping them out in the wilderness? Good question for experiments or something. Well, it kind of suggested that Val Kilmer was his character, Dr. Montguer. memory was trying to throw a monkey wrench in the whole situation and kind of cause chaos and take over the operation is kind of what I started to get. Oh, clearly. But then he just kind of went. Yeah, of course.
Starting point is 00:25:37 But then he just went nuts. One of those words you don't say for this movie. And he did a couple other things that I'm like, is he trying to sabotage this thing? but then he just kind of goes nuts and dresses up like like Marlon Brand. I'm like, what is fucking happening? But I will tell you this. So when I watched the doc, the director that started did not end up directing the whole movie. There was a lot of drama.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Which is part of the, I mean, I didn't watch the, the, make the documentary either, but I've did it. You got to watch it. Obviously, I want to. And obviously, I watched it on YouTube. So now I'm getting all the, you know, content. And the story of the director is the best. And I'm sure you're going to get to that what he did after he got fired. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:19 Yes. It's unbelievable. Fantastic. But the coolest, my favorite part of it was him talking about what the movie that he wanted to make. Because a lot of it is cool as hell. Like I was like, that would have really been outrageous. And one of them, the things that I think made more sense with that weird animal, like rabbit kissing thing, he wanted to make Dr. Montgomery kind of be bestiality.
Starting point is 00:26:44 Like he's having sex with. Well, there isn't there is. There is another scene where, I know, which I also stuck out as like a weird Val Kilmer trying to be kooky improv when he's like feeding. Is he giving them like medication or something? Yeah, Valcimer. And I think this is. He transfers it from his mouth into the mouth of one of the animal people.
Starting point is 00:27:04 Yeah. That was like he's just trying to like out kooky brando. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Doing stupid shit. But I guess there was stuff in the script that he was like having relations with the, the human animal hybrid people.
Starting point is 00:27:17 He was going to be kind of a more sinister character and then somebody else took over. He was going to do a lot more sinister, fucked up shit. So the, yeah, the original director of this was Richard Stanley who directed Color Out of Space, which we watched. Which we would have picked for you
Starting point is 00:27:31 had we not done it already. Okay. And then, yeah, he was replaced by John Frankenheimer. And I guess one of the wildest stories about what he did was he, when he was fired off the movie, went to live on the island where they were shooting,
Starting point is 00:27:45 much like the characters in the film, and then he dressed up as one of the animals and is an extra in the movie? Yes. So wild. Apparently, yeah, he makes it into a couple scenes, dressed as an animal. He does.
Starting point is 00:27:56 He was helped by some of the P.A. That's amazing. I love that. The P.A.s kind of didn't like, a lot of, the whole production after he left was even more chaotic, I guess. And so the crew was like,
Starting point is 00:28:09 fuck you. We're just going to fuck around. Perusible described his firing as the beginning of the horror show that followed, you know, after at that point, then the entire production just turned into basically hell and chaos for everyone involved. Yeah, because I heard that apparently she tried to leave. They tracked her down.
Starting point is 00:28:29 She tried to leave like it was a freaking prison. It's crazy how no one could escape this production. And how the stuff is happening in the movie. Like all of this is also happening in the movie. That's crazy. They should do like a almost like a movie. A movie about the making of the movie. Yes.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Like the room, right? They do with the room. Yes. Yeah. Oh my God. Spider 1, please make that movie. Let's do it.
Starting point is 00:28:53 That movie would be so cool. That would be amazing. Yeah, she tried to leave and then her reps were like, you're under contract. You're going to be sued to Kingdom Come if you don't get back there. So, you know, that's what happened. So yeah. Speaking of Faruza Balc, 90s Tastic cast here. Fucking great in this movie, by the way.
Starting point is 00:29:12 She is Dr. Marot's daughter and David Thulez sees her. She is doing like this kind of hippie dancing to music. Can we talk about that for a minute? I would love to. She's dancing to what I can only assume is pure moods.
Starting point is 00:29:27 Yep. Pure moods that you bought off late night TV in the 90s. And David Thulis, again, everyone is so creepy and weird in this movie. He watches her, but while he does it, he cops a squat. squats and watches her dance.
Starting point is 00:29:45 It's so creepy. Anyways, yes. Any further thoughts on Feroza Balx dancing? Yeah, I mean, I don't want to, you know, I, far be it for me to make fun of somebody's dancing, but. I don't think it was her. It wasn't great. Like, it was. I felt the opposite.
Starting point is 00:30:03 I thought it was so good. Oh, really? I felt it was a little, like, it was supposed to be sort of like seductive belly dancing. And it felt really like. Really like like sort of stiff and awkward. Too many, too many mushrooms at the music festival.
Starting point is 00:30:18 Yeah. Yeah. I guess I always wish that I could feel that free and move around like that. Give it a shot. We're not, there's no video. There's definitely videos from Whiskey and go go to me dancing at your show.
Starting point is 00:30:30 Matt put on some pure moods. Yeah, I'll just watch Emily. Hello, what is that called? Orcharina vibes or whatever. That's a song rule. Orinoco.
Starting point is 00:30:41 Loat Beas. Ocarina of Time. Yeah, I'm thinking of Ocarina of Time. I get those confused. So he's, so Richard, so David Doolis is squatting and watching her. And then Val is watching him with a flower in his mouth. Again, just the, yeah, that was weird. It's like this movie is insane before the hybrids show up.
Starting point is 00:31:01 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So he's kind of creepily watching. And so, you know, they have some sort of weird three-way relationship that we're setting up. Anyway, so they lock David Thulis... That goes nowhere. That goes nowhere, yeah. They lock David Thulis in a room, but he gets out using the old magazine trick where you jiggle... The key is in the door for some reason and you lands on a magazine and you pull it in, you get out of your thing.
Starting point is 00:31:26 Yeah, he figured that out pretty fast. He sure did. Yeah, I don't know what that trick is. Is that in another movie? I feel like I see it in movies a lot. You like, slip the magazine under a door. And in this, the key has to be in the door still for the magazine trick to work, but it often is in movies. the key falls out, falls onto the magazine
Starting point is 00:31:44 and you slip it under the door anyway. Wait, how do the key... Why would the key still be in there? And how did the magazine... How did the magazine sliding under the door get the key to fall? You're shaking the door so that it falls onto it?
Starting point is 00:31:57 I think you shake the door and it falls onto the magazine. Oh. I'm going to try that. Guys, I've done this millions of times. I've escaped so many rooms. They've got to stop putting magazines in jail cells. What are you going to read?
Starting point is 00:32:08 Everyone can't figure it out. And honestly, like, who delivered that magazine to the island? Yeah, that's right. How are they getting magazines? Yeah, that's right. You've got to get my Cosmo. Ten ways to make your half goat, half fish come. Now my children,
Starting point is 00:32:27 now my children, we will read highlights. And read the tales of goofus and gallant. There aren't enough arms in these landsend pants. I can't afford these for fall 2001. So, you know, so yeah, he gets out. There's a bunch of crazy animal noises out there in the jungle. And wouldn't you know it? He sneaks into a room and they are delivering a baby that is being birthed by a, I think, horsewoman.
Starting point is 00:33:03 Anyway, she's stunning. She's giving birth. She's radiant. and then so they they're now everybody's just out to get through us because he knows that they're doing hybrids one of the animal guys is chasing him is wearing a tuxedo we'll kind of get explained later we'll get into that he and ferruza so faruzza balk wants to help him for some reason I guess she loves him or something and they see a a this will be important later a cat man drinking from a stream so that'll You look cool, man. I thought that that makeup was great in this. Practical effects. This bomb from 1996 looks awesome because the animals are so cool.
Starting point is 00:33:48 So this was 96. Jurassic Park was 93. We kind of talked about when we did Congo that there was this like trying to capture this kind of science fiction hybrid playing God creature thing. Right. And do you think that they were kind of trying to do that with this somehow? I don't know. 100%. Yes.
Starting point is 00:34:08 Yeah. Yeah, I bet that was part of the pitch is like, oh, it's kind of like Jurassic Park. Yeah, for some reason, I put it in the same category. Even when I was a kid, it was like, this is like Jurassic Park, but without dinosaurs. Which one did you like better? I mean, I don't know Dr. Moro. A big Moro head. There is zero titty's in Jurassic Park.
Starting point is 00:34:27 That's right, exactly. None. Not enough fits. But, yeah, it's, I do think that some of the practical effects were very cool, especially this cat person. I wish there was more, like, cat. Was that hyena? Was that, was that,
Starting point is 00:34:39 yeah. No, hyena is Ron Perlman. Oh, so I think the goat priest is Ron Perlman. No, no. Is it a hyena? Hyena is Ron Perlman.
Starting point is 00:34:50 Who plays goat priest? I don't know. But the... Hey, Brock. Who was goat priest? Hold on, Matt. I'm getting more racist. Do you know how I know it was Ron Perlman?
Starting point is 00:35:04 Oh. Yeah, you've read the credits. Well, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, all right. Okay. You want to fight? Let's go. Now, I had a big crush on him in the Beauty and the Beast, a TV series with him and Linda
Starting point is 00:35:18 Hamilton. And there is just a distinctive symmetry to his face and his voice. Interesting. And I was like, that's him. And he's, God, God bless him. He is just stuck in prosthetics, his whole fucking life. Like, so, but he looks good in him. I got to say.
Starting point is 00:35:35 Emily, I will, I am looking on IMDB now. it could be wrong. Apparently Daniel Ridgeway played hyena and Ron Perlman was the sayer of the law. No way. Who was goat priests. That's what I call goat priests because we're buds. There's no way. His voice sounded just like Ron Perlman. I'm so mad. Oh, no, I've gotten horny for the wrong goat fan. I'm cheating. I'm cheating on my lover. How dare you? There's no way. Oh, I'm so mad. No, no, that's okay. Yeah, he'll listen. We all love, we all love goats. priest.
Starting point is 00:36:09 So, okay, so we kind of learning a little bit more about this. We meet goat priest who may or may not be played by Ron Perlman. He is kind of talking about the laws of the land that the father has laid out. I just feel. Look at this photo that I found on Wiki fandom. This is pitiful. See, not all of them looked that great. I'm going to be honest.
Starting point is 00:36:31 That's true. Disagree. Disagree. I think they're all iconic. I got to tell you. Disagree. When you guys talk about the makeup, the practical effects, the biggest mistake that they made in this movie, which I will hot take, I actually think this movie's really good. Because on an entertaining level.
Starting point is 00:36:50 Well, fair enough. We'll get to judgments. Oh, sorry. I'm kind of almost there too. No, no, no, not at all. Sure. Well, what I was going to say, when you do, having made movies and done prosthetics and make monsters and stuff, the mistake that they made was they were always out in bright sunlight. So you're always seeing every floor.
Starting point is 00:37:09 Like I could see that when they'd fall on the ground, you'd see where the glue is coming off. And these are all things you just disguised by making shit happen at night. Right. Because there was one scene at night where they were creeping down a hallway and I was like, that looks good.
Starting point is 00:37:23 Yeah. But then they'd be out in the sun like, you know, a dog boy in a tuxedo. Your face, you would, hello. Yes. Had they just centered this, you know, I think that it would have, the entire movie,
Starting point is 00:37:37 would have been less absurd had it been 90% at night. Yes, agree. Even the wacky brando shit and it would start to be, look, when you look at Apocalypse now and, you know, Colonel Kurtz, always in shadow, you know, that's terrifying. Yes. But him out in the sunlight with, with the world. Yes, you are for kimonos every scene.
Starting point is 00:38:01 This is the most correct take of all time. I just, I was watching this movie, going like the problem with it is whenever it's daylight, it looks indistinguishable from behind the scenes footage of a film set where a bunch of people are in animal costumes. And it's because it's this bright light throughout. And every night scene, I was like, holy shit, the prosthetics in this is really good. Do you think maybe the, so I guess what I heard in the documentary was that Brando the white sunscreen face paint was his idea. Like he wanted to do it.
Starting point is 00:38:41 He had a lot of ideas. Yeah, which honestly, I thought it was pretty creepy and cool. It actually is kind, no, I agree. It's a weird,
Starting point is 00:38:48 it's like, what's his name? But he has to be in the sun. Mark Zuckerberg. He looks like we have Mark Zuckerberg. But no, it's like, do you think that the reason why he did that
Starting point is 00:38:58 because he has to be in the sun because he's allergic to the sun and the heat? So it only makes sense for him to be outside in the bright, And so it's like, well, I guess we have to shoot this all outside in the day because of this sunscreen bit that he's doing. But the other thing is you were talking about Apocalypse now and that he's in the dark. And is he trying to differentiate between those characters? He thought, well, I have to wear white face paint and be in the light or else they'll think they're watching Apocalypse now.
Starting point is 00:39:29 Yeah, I don't know. Not sure if that he considered it that deeply, but maybe. I don't know. Maybe. So this is where we meet Dr. Moreau for the first time. We mentioned it. It's Marlon Brando. He's going around on a chair that the animal slaves are carrying.
Starting point is 00:39:47 He's got white face. He's got a triangular hat with the mosquito net. I think this is the worst hat in the movie. All right. Okay. Here's the thing. I will play the sting, but you're wrong. You disagree.
Starting point is 00:39:58 The worst hat. Yes, I have a worst hat. What's a worst hat than that, Matthew? then a triangle hat with a mosquito net on. The bucket hat that Perusa ball pours ice into for no reason. Dude, I forgot about that. When does that happen? It happens in the same scene.
Starting point is 00:40:19 I put bucket hat amazing. Yeah. I actually considered for this, I'm so glad I didn't because there's no video. I was going to wear a bucket, ice bucket on my head. You should have done it. Even though there's no video would have been even. funnier. Honestly,
Starting point is 00:40:35 that's a pretty brilliant hat. I love that hat and there's lore behind that hat. When we get to that scene, it's the scene where Fruzabalk
Starting point is 00:40:43 is like giving him a massage and he's just like, oh wow, your hands are so strong. I don't know if you remember that scene. Yeah, no, I remember.
Starting point is 00:40:52 But when we get there, I will explain the lore behind the bucket hat. Okay, incredible. So yeah, so hat talk, we're going to circle back to hat talk.
Starting point is 00:41:03 Okay, so yeah, Marlon Brando's there He's got a little guy They play piano together Just weird, weird, weird fucking vibes The whole time Are we gonna just quickly not Ask ourselves What the little guy was supposed to be?
Starting point is 00:41:20 He had a tail Because it was clear like that That's a dog That's a true Haina He looked like a worm His little like a crew of closest to his favorites
Starting point is 00:41:34 or whatever that lived in the house with him. So this is where the tuxedo ones come from. Like the one who was pretty evil just looked burned to me. Yeah, he was supposed to be a dog. Yeah, and then the little guy just looked burned. Was what? That's a burn.
Starting point is 00:41:50 What question? Yeah. Can I give you the real answer? Yeah, I love it. The real answer is I don't know what he was supposed to be, but what I know is that he and Marlon Brando got really close on set during it.
Starting point is 00:42:05 They became friends, and Marlon Brando demanded that he had more screen time, which is why you see him constantly throughout the movie, and it's why you see him playing a tinier piano on top of his grand piano. And wearing matching outfits. Yes, yes. I was just, and apparently he also was sexually harassing the crew through him. his interpreter who was also his sister. So these are fun.
Starting point is 00:42:37 This movie is filled with fun facts. And we are not usually the podcast that has fun facts, but I had to. It's incredible. Yeah. So yeah. So he still didn't tell me what he was. I had no idea. He was, he was.
Starting point is 00:42:51 Oh, I think he was supposed to be some sort of, here's my head came. Right? A monkey. He was the greatest, the greatest thing of all, a friend. That's right. Yes, the friends we made along the way. Here's my head cannon is that he was the failed attempt to do a reptile hybrid. Because we see him naked and he has a little like gecko tail almost.
Starting point is 00:43:16 Anyway, that's my thought. They tried to do a gecko man or something. I was kind of thinking about this because they don't, the science of this is never really like justified. He just says he wants to make a perfect human race. You're like, well, okay, whatever. He found Satan in a pile of genes, and he's eliminated the genes to make these perfect people. But he's basically only doing mammals, right? So it's like you're looking around and you're just like, okay, so he's only done mammals.
Starting point is 00:43:45 I would like for him to talk about why that is, has he tried to splice it with other, like, species or like, you know, reptiles and like fish people or whatever. But it's all just dog people and pig people and horse people. That's like it. So yeah. So we kind of like get a very hand wavy explanation as to why this is all happening. Brando's like I'm splicing jeans and that seems to be enough for David Thulis. He also has a thing that shocks the animals if they get out of control. So he's kind of like a cruel ruler we see.
Starting point is 00:44:21 Which is if that's trying to train these creatures to be the perfect human race, you can put those things in humans too. That's a good point. True. One of my favorite, one of my favorite, technology is what we need to take. One of my favorite scenes is when Brando has a, like,
Starting point is 00:44:35 he's, I think Val Kilmer's with him, and he has like a petri dish in a flashlight. And this is like the scientific moment. He's like, look, it's almost opaque. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:47 But here it's yellow. And this is like, oh, yeah, I'm convinced. A true man of science. Yes. That had to be Brando riffing. That had to be just like,
Starting point is 00:44:58 100%. He's not scared out the science of the gene splicing. Yeah, he's not wearing any gloves, no masks. So they execute the cat man who was drinking out of the stream because that's not what people do. No, no, for killing the rabbits. Oh, okay. I thought it was framed. He was framed by Val Kilmer for killing the rabbit.
Starting point is 00:45:21 Which you're like, why? What was the plan, buddy? Well, now the movie makes perfect sense. Now I get it. Now everything's. So they kill that guy. And then a hyena, dogman hyena is like going through the oven where they cremated him. I just love saying what happens in this movie makes me feel insane.
Starting point is 00:45:42 So the dog man is going through the cremation remains. So he finds out that you can remove the electroshock tracker. And he like removes his own electroshock thing. So now. And that's when he says. He digs into it. Pain no more. I made a pain no more sting.
Starting point is 00:46:05 We need shirts. I'm sure we'll get a lot of use out of that. Yeah. So this is kind of like where the rebellion starts. Why don't we do this? Let's take a break and we'll come back and we'll talk about the thrilling finale. Hi, everybody. We're free with ads, the podcast.

We are here with Spider-1.
Starting point is 00:49:09 He, the director of Big Baby and the front man of Power Man. 5,000. We're talking about the island of Dr. Moreau. So the animals now know how to take their shocker things out. This is when we get the little scene of Faruza Balc, his daughter, who is slowly mutating into a cat person. Which I wish we could have seen. Oh, I know. I would love it if she gone full cat. That was cool. They just made her teeth grow a little, I think, right? Which look pretty tight. I like the double canine thing that was going on. And Thulis loved it when he saw the teeth. You could tell kind of a tooth guy. Yeah, he was into it. There's, you know, there's, there's, I mean, like, who wasn't into Frusa Bulk in the 90s?
Starting point is 00:49:45 I mean, yeah, just make those teeth longer. I know. You know, this was the same year that the craft came out. This is a big year for Frusuf. She was having a little balk asance. Which was first? I'm not sure, but I know they came out in 96, so I don't know. But I miss her a lot.
Starting point is 00:50:04 In the documentary when she was talking, you were like, oh, this chick rules. I want to see her more stuff. I miss her. Same thing with Lewis. I feel like, David? Is it David Thulis? David Thulis? Yeah. Oh, he went on to be in Harry Potter as a werewolf.
Starting point is 00:50:18 It's true. He is, he still worked, but there was a point in the 90s where he was like in stuff. And I always thought he was great. More him, I said. He is pretty great. Okay, so the animals are like starting to, starting to revolt. There's a, there's, this is the most improvised ass scene in the movie of Brando playing piano and then the animals come in and he like plays piano for them. and then they kill him and he's dead. And then he plays Rhapsody in Blue. It was like it's a really beautiful, you know, part of that song too.
Starting point is 00:50:52 And for a moment I was like, oh, they can't kill him. He just played Gershwin. Yeah. We will not kill father. Now play Swanee. I'll say, go ahead. Play the Jackie Sachs. That's my favorite.
Starting point is 00:51:09 Play the song from Looney Tunes when there's a factory scene. Play, I've got rhythm. I've got music. Play, Cotton Eye Joe. All the hits. All the hits. So yeah, they kill him.
Starting point is 00:51:25 And then Val, for some reason, immediately just starts acting like Marlon Brando. He has like a white robe and he paints a cross on his head. He looks fucking awesome. Apparently he's supposed to be a drug addict. Like that was another. Well, he has the sunscreen on as well, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:41 Yeah. But didn't he have like a, sorry to interrupt you, but didn't because we had mentioned hats. Oh, yes. Didn't he, didn't he guy kind of go like 90s hip hop? He had like a sideways baseball hat as his hat. Did he? I feel like he kind of looked like he was in like a house of pain or something. And I will say Val is wearing Birkenstocks throughout this whole movie.
Starting point is 00:52:05 And whenever he's, whenever he runs, I'm like, he's going to twist his ankle. Yeah, he's going to twist his ankle. Or shin splints. Yeah. Well, let me just real quick then say what happened with the speaking of hats. Yeah, let's talk about the bucket hat. Okay, so you see at one point, Faruza Balc pouring ice water into the bucket hat of Dr. Moreau. Which is an ice bucket, not the fine, fine bucket hats that say the worst hat that you could purchase.
Starting point is 00:52:31 No, yes. MaxFundStore.com. That's right. First of all, guys, great segue to a plug for merch. No problem. I've been really trying to find them. You found it and I commend you. So apparently this movie, there was a lot of Marlon Brando trying to create lore as he went on.
Starting point is 00:52:54 And that included what he wanted was a bucket hat reveal where the hat comes off and there's a dorsal fin from a dolphin because he wanted to be part dolphin by the end of it. So he set up the scene in order to like sort of build the story. So by the time maybe he died, the bucket hat would come. I'm not sure how he planned it, but he wanted to be part dolphin. That's what was going on in this movie. I'd also heard that he was because he was so overweight and it was so hot in Australia that he just did that for practical reasons. I could see real reasons too, yes. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:53:36 I mean, you got to give him credit for caring that much. much, right? Because he could have phoned it in. Oh, sure. Well, I did hear that his lines could not be memorized. Yeah, that one, he'd never. You ever see those famous pictures in the Godfather? Yes.
Starting point is 00:53:51 Yes. James Conn and Robert Deval with the lines taped to their jacket. Yeah. I have not seen that. That's hilarious. Yeah, I'm sure there's just like a giraffe man with lines taped to him standing in front of but wait. You were saying.
Starting point is 00:54:07 Yeah, I was just going to say like, you know how. you know, there's such a like a popcorn bucket like trend like with Dune and, you know, you like when you go to AMC, I like think of the possibilities with the ice bucket and the that's right. That would have been so good. The popcorn buckets would have saved this movie. Yeah. Popcorn bucket hats and you would just eat the popcorn from the person in front of you.
Starting point is 00:54:30 Yeah, out of your. Holy shit. You know, we can take this. This only works if everyone gets them. We all have to. money together. We may be able to buy the rights to this film and take you a theatrical run with this thing.
Starting point is 00:54:44 Yes, that's right. We need more subscribers. Maximumfund.org slash join. Maximumfund.org slash join. Help us buy the rights to the island of Dr. Moreau. So the animals are like rising up at this point. They kill Val. They go after
Starting point is 00:55:01 Thulis and Faruza Balk who's like going full cat now. Not full cat rather. She kind of hissed. She had like four, four teeth now, I think. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I was kind of like, so they were giving her medication so that she would not progress into becoming a cat hybrid. And I'm like, is this kind of like, it's turning into one of these like puberty? It's kind of like, well, you know, some girls get their periods and then some turn into cat ladies.
Starting point is 00:55:31 Like, it's just that's what's going to happen. Are you there? God, it's me, Dr. Moreau's daughter. Strange things are happening to my body. Yeah, I'm got a tail now. Yeah, I'm asking for dinner when someone just gave me dinner. And I need them to fill in the hole inside of the bowl. What a specific cat joke. I love it.
Starting point is 00:55:54 Some guys go ball a string, not me. That's right. Anyway, so there's this big shootout. The island is full of the red barrel from doom that it explodes. if you shoot at. He says tons of these red barrels around the island. There's this huge giant shootout
Starting point is 00:56:11 with hyena kind of leading the charge. Everything goes to shit. Hyena walks into the burning house screaming for his father. We get a little post thing of Thuleus. He's built a tiny little, he's built a slutty little boat. And he's going out
Starting point is 00:56:30 and the goat priest says that they don't want any help. They don't want any more scientists. no more labs. They're just going to try and live as animals on the island. And then there's a surprise voiceover. Remember this movie has voiceover? Rathulis talks about how he, he's like,
Starting point is 00:56:47 I don't think of it often, but I think of it sometimes. I would think of this every fucking day if this has happened to me. I love that. He's like, I don't know, I've had more interesting shit happen to me. Like what? I'm doing pretty well in my squash tournament.
Starting point is 00:57:01 Right. My fantasy football league is good. going swimmingly this season. So yeah, and then we get these very heavy-handed, just like clips from the news of humans acting like animals. We know we've watched things before. We understand symbolism. Whatever.
Starting point is 00:57:20 That's the end of the movie. We're going to tell you what we thought about it. But first, oh, you know we got to do the hunk watch. It's hunk watch. So, Spider, for you, every, you go around the horn. and we pick a hunk of the movie. This could be someone you found fetching. This could just be someone you thought
Starting point is 00:57:41 did a particularly good job. We'll go to you last. We'll each pick our hunks. Okay, yeah, let me think about it. Noodle on hunks for a minute. I mean, Val, obviously. Fucking legendary. This is peak Val. But I got a shout out.
Starting point is 00:57:55 Those two pig sisters he was swapping meds with. Yeah. I think they were twins. Pig twins. Big twins. Hey, twins. I didn't notice them.
Starting point is 00:58:09 I thought this whole island was just boy like animals. No, there were some sexy pig ladies. I guess I didn't. It's hard to know. It's hard to tell us. You know, it's hard to know. I guess so. But it seemed like a bunch of dudes,
Starting point is 00:58:22 the pregnant animal woman that we saw in the thing. And yeah, boy, I want to, it's definitely Val Kilmer. And I guess not Ron Perlman. I guess it's whoever. the other guy was that was in the hyena costume. Daniel Rigney. Daniel Rigney, you did things to me and I appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:58:45 Yeah, yeah. He's probably married to a pig lady and I can't compete with that. I can't compete. Yeah. I'm going old school. I'm going with Marlon fucking Brando. Oh, really? Here's why.
Starting point is 00:59:01 Okay. Marlon Brando, a lot of people look at this movie and they take clips of it and they parody it and they go, oh, you know, look at this fool, this clown. And I say to you, he is doing his best. And he is someone who didn't have to do this movie. You know, he's been someone for at least at the point that this movie has made three to four decades of him being the hottest man alive. And he decided, he decided, to come out of semi-forced retirement
Starting point is 00:59:38 to make the world's dumbest animal doctor movie and he did I think a great job at creating a really bonkers ass character and you might say but he's supposed to be hunky that's what the point of the segment
Starting point is 00:59:55 is I say fuck that he's hunky because I think it's sexy when you're dedicated wow okay that's my answer Bravo Bravo Spider 1 I mean, you kind of took the words out of my mouth with that one. I was going to say this.
Starting point is 01:00:11 So I was going to go Brando for similar reasons for what I had mentioned before about his dedication to it. I don't think he was phoning in him. No, I don't think he was phoing in him. No, I don't think. Since you said all that, I'll just go with the little gecko boy. Little gecko boy. Yes.
Starting point is 01:00:27 The little gecko is named Nelson de la Rosa. He was the world's smallest man. Yes. That is, that's, was. Was. Yes. A lot of people in this movie have passed on. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:41 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There's a lot of, a lot of dead people. Val, RIP, Nelson Delaroz, RIP, and of course, Marlon Brando RIP. Yeah. Lizard boy. Lizard boy.
Starting point is 01:00:54 RIP, Lizard boy. Yes. Ron Herman, still going strong. Roman still going strong. Still going. That's right. RIP, Lizard boy. Make God wonder what animal you are.
Starting point is 01:01:05 So that's the hunks of the movie. We're going to tell you what we thought about it overall when we come back. Hey, we're back. It's free with ads. We are here with Spider-1, the director of Big Baby, the frontman of Power Man 5,000. We're going to tell you what we thought of the island of Dr. Moreau. We're going to rank it on a scale of 1 to 10 super loud commercials because that's what you got to pay to watch the movie. Spider-1.
Starting point is 01:01:55 Tell us what you thought of this movie and rank it. on a scale of one to ten super loud commercials. I will tell you also, speaking of commercials, there weren't a lot of commercials when I watched it. Lucky you. Did not feel interrupted whatsoever.
Starting point is 01:02:07 That's good. Good job, YouTube. Yeah. I'm a scale to one to 10, okay, this is tough because what am I judging this on? Purely entertainment value, right? I'm not going to get,
Starting point is 01:02:19 I'm not one of these YouTube critics that want to make the movie what I want. I'm watching the movie for what it is. is. Nice. And for what it is, there wasn't one moment that I was bored. There wasn't one moment that I wasn't entertained, that I wanted to see what was going to happen next.
Starting point is 01:02:39 I, yes, there was some, they could have made some different choices, lighting-wise, to disguise some of the, I'm going to give this a solid, uh, 7.5. 7.5, super loud commercials, yes. Hell. Maybe we'll end on Matt because he's the only one who's actually seen this multiple times in theaters. It gets better every time. Emily, what do you think of? Emily, what do you think of the island of Dr. Morrow?
Starting point is 01:03:06 I agree so much with what you said. I do think that you totally get the whole vibe of this podcast because we think seeing movies for free is the biggest gift that there is on the internet. So if you get to see it and you enjoy it, it isn't about it being good or bad. it's where did you enjoy that you got to see it for free like that's what the thing is but yeah there were things i wish happened to this movie that did not happen i wish that she would have turned into a full-blown cat person that really upset me i was like waiting for that to happen if there's a lot of it was like chikov's cat lady like you know it was like it's got to happen it's got to happen and then it doesn't um the other thing was seeing this i wanted to know about more about
Starting point is 01:03:53 Val Kilmer's character. It just felt like there was so much, like, not there. Like, I couldn't follow why he was turning into this person impersonating him. But I was fascinated by his performance the whole time. I don't know. There was just, there was more I wanted to see. But overall, you're very right. Every moment was entertaining. And it was a lot to look at. So many things to see with your eyes. Yes. But just there's all kinds of things I saw. You can look at stuff in the movie.
Starting point is 01:04:29 And I also wanted to know more about what this science was supposed to actually do. Like what was he? Maybe there's a director's cut out there that will give you those extra. Well, there's a book that this is all based on. So I'm like maybe I should read that and there's an explanation. That's too much. Much work. H.
Starting point is 01:04:48 That's a lot. I'm not doing that. Which is probably... Two other movies. I would say that book is probably public domain by now. So you could probably go ahead and make that movie. I think it's from 1892. Let me let me...
Starting point is 01:05:02 Yeah, hold on. But it might be... Oh, that's public domain. Yeah. Oh, my God, guys. We're going to fire up the final draft tonight to start working on that script. Do it. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:05:12 This could be your winning the poop blood and honey. But instead of it on island in the South Pacific, it takes place in Van Eyes. For the balance of Dr. For budgetary reasons, that's amazing. You want to know something crazy, though, that the Winnie the Pooh, Blood and Honey, there's a Winnie the Pooh, Blood and Honey 3,
Starting point is 01:05:32 which is written by the former director. H.G. Wells. The last thing he wrote before he died. No, Richard Stanley, the guy who was supposed to direct this fucking movie. He wrote, but it was part three, not the original. So you got to know that. But I had so much fun watching it. But yes, I wanted to know more.
Starting point is 01:05:55 What number did you give it? I'm going to give it a seven. Yeah. Seven. Okay. Yeah, I'm not there with y'all. I'm going to give it a seven, too. I think this is a really, like, fun.
Starting point is 01:06:06 I'll say bad movie, but maybe it's more of a fiasco, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, it's, it's, you know, it whiffs so often, but it's full of great actors, some of the greatest actors, doing fun. performances. The makeup looks cool when it's lit correctly. Yeah, and obviously there's this like crazy backstory. So if you're somebody who likes, you know, digging into this stuff, there's like a lot of fun stuff, you know, try and spot the director in the extras. That stuff is so cool. And yeah, it is like, it is like, it is like, you know, you can see why it's a famous disaster. Because
Starting point is 01:06:43 it is. It's really, it's really wild and doesn't make a ton of sense. But if you like this kind of If you like cult movies, if you're looking for a bad movie night, I think this is a great choice. What did you think of your favorite movie as a child? I am giving this a bad movie 10. I love this movie. There's something, here's the thing. When I first saw this movie, I was not a huge fan of it. I remember watching it going, this is one of the weirder ones my dad has taken me.
Starting point is 01:07:13 And he's taking me, like, I saw Cabin Boy in theaters. You know, like if that's a Chris Ellie. vehicle. Wasn't the Geiver one of those that you saw in theaters? I didn't see that in theaters. I saw that on TV multiple times. But this one I saw in theaters. I thought it was kind of weird. It had this lasting effect on me, which I do think about this movie constantly, but I had no interest in rewatching it till this podcast. As I'm watching it, I'm very much expecting to see a train wreck sort of like, you know, a bad movie that just, it's not even fun. It's just kind of a boring thing. This is not that movie. This movie from scene one to scene whatever, 10,000. It is packed with lore that doesn't go, that isn't explained. The ideas surrounding the movie are actually kind of great. It makes me want to read the source material.
Starting point is 01:08:08 And honestly, I think everyone is doing their best. They are. Everyone cares about this movie. This movie is entertaining on multiple levels. It's entertaining, you know, on its face, but it's also entertaining once you find out the backstory. So I love this movie. This is a 10 for me.
Starting point is 01:08:26 Okay. Let me ask you a question. So you saw it as a kid. Yeah. And I find that anything I saw as a kid, I can not see it for 20 years. I see it and I remember everything about it. Yeah. That kid brain, did you have that experience?
Starting point is 01:08:41 100%. Yes. And it was, there was things, of course, I didn't notice. Like, as a kid, I didn't notice the very weird. loose explanation of what the main character is doing there. He goes like, I'm with the UN where he have to do the peace process. And I was like, okay, well, that's never going to be explained. I wonder if there was a draft where he's supposed to like broker the peace between the
Starting point is 01:09:06 animals and humans or something. Yeah, because they do nothing with that. But every, you know, I knew like muscle memory. I knew exactly when we were going to see Brando show up. I knew exactly what he looked like and what he sounded like the scene where he dies in my guts,
Starting point is 01:09:24 I'm like, I think he dies in this scene. I vaguely remember it. But there was like holding out hope that he didn't because he played Gershwin so beautifully. Yeah, you sure did. But yeah, this was a movie I remembered sort of like a bad dream. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:09:40 All right. Yeah, well, that's, there you go. This is maybe the most positive things anyone's ever said about the island of Dr. Moreau. So guys, we did it. Spider-1, thank you so much for joining us. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:09:54 We're going to go around the horn and do some plugs. Tell us again where we can watch Big Baby and about anything else you got going on. Yeah, Big Baby, as I said, is available now, stream on Amazon, Fandango, Apple, whatever Apple is. And all those, any place you can, YouTube, you can watch it on YouTube. Probably not with ads, so I think you have to pay for it.
Starting point is 01:10:16 but um and then if you don't want to do that if you already have shutter which is a horror movie streaming it will be available on shutter october 30th um and you can also watch my first movie allegoria on shutter which has the original big baby in it as well as my movie little bites which is also on hulu so this spider one movies everywhere just out there um and coming next year i want to start uh the island of dr morrow which takes place in van ice How about this? Here's my pitch. The Valley of Dr. Morrell. Yeah, that's what Matt said earlier. I said that. I'm sorry. That's a good joke.
Starting point is 01:10:55 You've got to be a co-writer. It's going to be a whole legal thing. No, no. You just put a special thank you. No, I will not take that. Emily does not speak for me. Okay, well, I want a special thank you for no reason. My people will talk to your people.
Starting point is 01:11:09 And by the way, my people are my four-year-old daughter. She's a tough negotiator. Yeah, she's going to get you. But that's it. Other than that, I'm chilling at home. I've done touring for the year. But I'll probably start working on some new Power Man music over the holidays and hopefully have some new songs out.
Starting point is 01:11:26 And we hit the road again in May, I think next year. We have a nice big spring U.S. tour, which I know you're all going to come out and see me at some point. So, yeah, we'll be back on the road next year. Power Man 5,000 Rocks. See them live. People see them when they come. A great merch. Great merch.
Starting point is 01:11:45 I'd say that y'all's band merch is some of the coolest fucking band merch. Oh, thank you. Emily, got anything? Please continue to subscribe to my YouTube channel.
