When is the best time to apply for hotel cards to leverage free night certificates? Welcome to Frequent Milers Coffee Break, where we focus on a single topic related to miles and points. Each coffee break is limited to 20 minutes or less or your money back. This came up for me personally because I was thinking about applying for the Hilton Aspire card that comes with a free night certificate every year. And I realized, well, wait a minute, if I apply now, I'll get the certificate, assuming I'm approved right away,
Starting point is 00:00:46 I'll get the certificate about eight weeks later. And I don't know if that's good timing. So we're going to talk about the timing issues around free night certificates and why it's so important to carefully think about when you make your application. Yeah, you know, I think that last piece is really important and it might seem somewhat obvious to some folks a part of that, a component of that, lining it up with player two. But we're going to talk about also when your certificate is going to get issued. So talk about that. Let's talk about some example problems when I say mention timing, right? So for instance, you got to consider your timing with when you tend to go on vacation. You know, so for instance, if you have certificates that expire in mid-November and you want
Starting point is 00:01:29 use them over Thanksgiving to go travel and visit family. Maybe your kids are on break that week. That's not going to be terribly useful because your new certificate won't get issued until the middle of November and your expiring certificate will expire in the middle of November rather. So you won't probably be able to use it or at least you'll be booking very last minute for your November travel. And so you've got to kind of consider that whenever it is you travel. If you tend to travel during the summer, maybe you've got kids in school and you travel during July. Well, you don't want to your free night certificate issued every year in July because that means you'll have to wait until July to be able to book your hotel with it. So you really have to consider when you're likely
Starting point is 00:02:09 to be using free night certificates year after year for years to come if you're going to keep this card long term. Right. And another timing issue has to do with getting multiple free night certificates of the same type. Like so multiple Marriott certificates or multiple IHG, whatever, this could happen within an individual. Like you might have a IHG personal card and an IHD business card, both of which come with free night certificates. But if they're very offset in time when they expire, it makes it very hard to use both of them, for example, for a weekend getaway.
Starting point is 00:02:47 And same thing even more with if you have a player two or even player three and player four, where each different people within the household, that travel together, have free night certificates, if you have this situation where they're expiring at different times, it just becomes so difficult to plan a trip where you're using multiple of these certificates because it's like, okay, I'm ready to book now for a trip that's six months from now. But, you know, my certificate will work, but my wife's is going to expire a month before our trip. So do I wait until she gets a new one? And then they're
Starting point is 00:03:27 might not be availability at that point. You know, it's a real pain. Yeah, we ran into into exactly that situation this summer because we wanted a hotel on the Amalfi Coast, and I had a certificate from, I don't know, one of the Hilton cards that I have, and it was going to be fine to use that certificate, and we were going to travel in August,
Starting point is 00:03:47 but my wife, she wasn't going to get her new certificate from her aspire card until May. And so I had to say, well, do I book it now and hope that availability is still there? Do I look for something? else. What do we plan? And so really getting those lined up is super important also. So, all right, but in order to line them up, you have to consider, well, when do you get the free night certificate? Now, obviously, some cards come with a free night certificate as part of the welcome bonus,
Starting point is 00:04:12 and that's just going to depend on when you meet the spending requirements. But we're talking like year after year in the future. If you're going to get this card and have it and hold it, I guess they should back up and say a lot of hotel cards make sense to keep long term because the free night certificate can be more valuable than the cost of the annual fee. And so if you're looking at a hotel card and you're saying, well, yeah, I'll get more value out of that free night certificate every year than what the annual fee is going to cost me. Then you have to know, well, how long is it going to be each year between my renewal date and when the free night certificate posts or just, I guess just really the key thing is to know when it's going to post. Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, that's something that
Starting point is 00:04:50 until I started thinking about this topic for a coffee break, I hadn't really thought about when do these free night certificates post exactly compared to when you apply for a card and are approved. And so I looked back at my own free night certificates and I was able to see that the ones issued by Chase seemed to happen each year on the same day I was approved for whatever card. It is, right? So for my IHG certs seem to come each year on the day that I was approved for those IHG cards, for example. Same with the Chase Marriott cards. Amex cards, though, seem to be like two to three months after approval, as far as I can tell.
Starting point is 00:05:38 And it sounds like you had similar experience, Nick. Yeah, similar, exactly. In fact, I couldn't remember application dates. I know when free night certificates have arrived, but I wasn't sure exactly when we applied. So I had to go back through old emails and find it. But yeah, for instance, my wife's Hilton aspire card. She applied in February of years ago, whenever it was. And her free night certificate comes every year on May 1st. So two and a half months or so from the date that she applied. And that's been consistent. So, so yeah, you know, you have to consider that because that for me makes
Starting point is 00:06:12 a difference. You know, when I look at the Hilton offers right now and say, okay, well, if I'm going to get one of those and try to line up an annual free night certificate, when do I want to apply? so that my certificate can be issued around the same time that her certificate is issued. Yeah, yeah. So that's the easier problem to solve, right? It's like lining up player one and player two's certs by either applying originally on the same date or applying, you know, looking back to when the other person applied for the card they're using and apply around that same time and hopefully you'll get approved with the same.
Starting point is 00:06:48 with a similar amount of lag time, right, to line them up. They don't have to be lined up perfectly, but the closer they're lined up, the easier it makes these kind of problems. All right, so that's sort of, that's a solvable problem. What about this question of like, when is best? So let's make this about me for a second. So I often do like big international travel when these search really come in handy. Like, beginning of, end of December, beginning of January, sometimes do them in the spring, or late winter, let's say.
Starting point is 00:07:33 So like late February or sometime in March, anytime in the summer. And then sometimes around Thanksgiving, right? Like, those are common times. So it's spread all throughout the year. And it's, it kind of feels to me like anytime it's a bad time. Yeah, well, it does. When you said that, as you continued adding more on, I was like, well, that's a lot of travel, Greg. So it's kind of hard to line that up perfectly.
Starting point is 00:08:00 We'll be right back after this with our thoughts and analysis. And we're back. So, you know, if you're going to try to maximize, the way I would look at it is say, okay, well, when out of those times tends to be the most expensive time to travel, when a free night certificate will really come in handy? Or when am I going to stay in a place that's, you know, particularly, really going to be a particularly good use of the free night certificate. So I think of a Hilton certificate that's uncapped that you can use anywhere. Is that one you're going to need to use at
Starting point is 00:08:25 Thanksgiving? I don't know because, you know, Thanksgiving, presumably you're visiting family and maybe you're not seeking out the most aspirational property. You just are seeking out a property that's in the right area for wherever it is your family is. But I would think that maybe when you take those trips, the big international trips in January or in the summer, then those might be the types of things where you'll plan a trip around a great use of the certificate. So I guess you kind of have to prioritize, well, how am I going to use this? Now, conversely, like a Marriott 35K free night certificate, that could be one that I might really want to have around that Thanksgiving trip because that might fit, again,
Starting point is 00:09:00 depending on where your family is located, and if they're in Manhattan, maybe not. But, you know, if they're in a small town somewhere where you might be able to get a residence in for 35,000 points that would otherwise cost a lot because it's Thanksgiving, you know, then they could come in handy. So I think that's a hard thing to answer in a blanket way. I don't know that there is a good solution for you. How have you thought about it? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:22 No, I haven't really figured it out, to be honest. It's a tough, it's a tough situation. I think that I want to optimize for kind of after Christmas as well as like other winter to early spring travel. So if I want to optimize for those, then I think I'm looking at wanting to get the certs maybe early May? Like that way, if I had like last minute summer travel to plan, you know, they'd be available and otherwise they'd be available for all like fall to through till spring, right? Because I'm not usually going to plan those like fall through spring trips until summertime anyway,
Starting point is 00:10:08 I think. Right, right. All right. So, yeah, I mean, I think that you're talking about May. ish being a good time. And, and, you know, I think that for those reasons, that probably does make sense in terms of getting your free night certificates issued around then for your travel. But then that affects when you apply, right? So like the current offers, you know, if it's elevated, how do you think about should I apply for an elevated offer? Should I wait to time this out? What's more
Starting point is 00:10:38 important? And how do you look at that? Yeah. Well, you know, it's kind of funny, especially with Hilton, I think it's extra complicated because there are other cards besides the Aspire where you can earn, well, there's another card. The surpass, we can earn free night certificates with spend. And then there are other cards where when the offer is particularly good, you could get a free night certificate as part of the offer. And that happens to be the case as we're recording this. With the business card and the fee free, no annual fee Hilton card, I'm not sure it matters because you're not going to be getting annual one. So the question with those while the offer is here is like, do you think you'll be able to use those free night certificates effectively once you meet the minimum spend and get these certificates? That's a one-time decision, right?
Starting point is 00:11:34 You don't have to worry about what happens every year. the Hilton's surpass card also you don't have to really worry about when the when your card membership year ends because with that card the way you earn free night certificates is with calendar year spent like spending $15,000 within a calendar year. And I believe whenever you complete that spend, you get the free night certificate within some short amount of time after that. And I believe you get the free night certificate very quickly after that. Yeah, and very quickly after you meet the spending requirement for one of those, in my experience, my past experience, it's been like within a few days of having met the spend required to unlock that free night certificate. Now, the timing here works out really well with what you've already kind of decided for your
Starting point is 00:12:25 own personal situation. You said, ah, if they can get certificates to come out around May and line up around May, that would work out well, this could be perfect for that because, you could easily meet the spending requirement, the $15,000 annual spending requirement on the surpass card, I imagine, with a tax payment in April and get a free night certificate every year. So you could just plan on paying taxes with your surpass card every year in April in order to unlock a free night certificate that'll line up really nicely if you get your others to post around May.
Starting point is 00:12:55 Yeah. Hey, that's a great point. So, you know, I think that'll be a real factor in potentially a lot of households where if you have an aspire card, which has the automatic annual free night, and you have a surpass card that has the, you know, spend $15,000 to get the free night, the question is, will you be able to spend $15,000 in time to have the date of the certificate line up roughly with the aspires date? And so, you know, that's going to really depend on million factors. But that's kind of what you want to do, assuming you want to use those free night certificates on the same,
