This week's question of the week, how can I maximize my bookings through the edit?
So Rob writes in with several questions about Chase's The Edit, but before we get to Rob's questions,
let me first just address, well, what is the edit?
Because it's the strangest name, I think, for maybe, maybe it's just because I'm an old dude now.
But the edit doesn't tell me what it's about necessarily the name.
What it is is a luxury hotel booking platform.
So this is essentially if you're familiar with like Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts,
this is Chase's version of that.
It's a luxury hotel booking platform where you book through this platform
and you get a number of benefits added to your stay,
like daily breakfast for two,
usually a $100 property credit,
sometimes perhaps a room upgrade,
maybe late checkout based on availability, things like that when you book through the edit.
So you get a suite of benefits of that sort by booking through Chase as the edit.
And you need the Sapphire Reserve Card or the Safari Reserve for Business Card in order to book
the edit properties.
Which is an important point to make because the first question that Rob has is,
does the person on the card?
So does the Sapphire Reserve card holder have to stay on property?
or can they book for someone else?
I'm a Sapphire Reserve card holder.
Can I book a stay for somebody else?
It seems like you can.
So if you go into book, there's a place where you could put in who the, you know, person staying will be and it doesn't have to be yourself.
And there's a number of data points online showing that people not only did that, but the person who stayed, like, you know, one person's daughter, for example, actually
got the benefits that are, you know, promised for that hotel, you know, the daily breakfast for
two and that sort of thing. So it does appear to work. Yeah. And one thing that I'll point out is I did
read one data point from someone who called, and they were told that it does need to be prepaid
in order to ensure that all the benefits will happen. So I don't know for sure whether that's true,
but it seems reasonable to me that you may have to prepay this day with the Sapphire Reserve card
in order to make sure that they get the benefits.
Yeah, and by the way,
being paid on property.
By the way, the Saffir Reserve card has $250 credits that you get each year
for booking two-night or longer stays through the edit,
and you only get those rebates if you prepay.
So it all works out well.
Absolutely.
Well, that brings us into the second question that Rob had.
So before I read the question, let me mention that, yes,
the Saffire Reserve,
and Sapphire Reserve for business card, both have this twice annual $250 credit for the edit bookings
of two nights or more, just like Greg said a second ago. Those are not tied to particular times of
the year. So you could book both of them right away in January of the year or whenever you're
planning your trip, it's fine to use both of those credits in close proximity to each other in
terms of when you book. But there's an additional credit for 2026 only. There's an additional $250 credit
that only works for select brands. And I don't have all of the brands memorized, but a couple that
come to mind are IHG. I'm pretty sure minor hotels is in there, Virgin hotels. I think Pendree,
you'll have to check the list of places that qualify. But there's another whole section of hotels
that qualify for a $250 credit. And it's possible to stack, though.
So if you book a hotel through the edit, like just recently, I booked a virgin hotels through the
edit. And so I triggered both the $250 edit credit and the $250 Select Hotel Brands credit that's only
valid for 2026 bookings. So Rob wants to know about doing that type of thing. Rob says, can you book
before December 31st to take advantage of the stackable credits for select chains, but use the credits on a
stay that's going to happen the following year if you pay now. So if I want to stay in
2027, maybe I want to go back to that Virgin Hotels Nashville, but I want to go next year and I
have one of those credits to use on select brands. Can I make that booking now, Greg,
and stay next year? Yes, absolutely. So, you know, these are prepaid. They have to be in
order to get these credits. We mentioned that a second ago. So it's the date that you are pre-paying
that matters for the for the credits.
Couple possible gotchas.
One is I wouldn't wait until December 31st to do that
because you just never know with these things
when the transaction will actually post
and maybe they'll treat it like a January 1st booking
and then you'd lose out.
So I would just just to be careful, you know,
do it December 30th or before.
The other thing is if you have to,
cancel next year, it'll be then too late to recoup, like, they'll claw back those credits that
they gave you, as well as refund whatever you paid. But there's no way to then get back the
2026 credits. You'd be then when you rebook, you'd be using 2027 credits at that point.
Yeah. So you're going to get your money back. It's not that you're going to lose something.
What you're going to lose is the ability to use the credit. Now, those who are familiar,
with Amex fine hotels and resorts might be thinking, oh, well, what if I just make two or three
bookings and then I cancel one of them? It's not the same as it is with Amex. With Amex, if you have another
qualifying booking generally, you'll end up keeping the credit. However, with Chase, because of the way
this works, it's a prepaid thing. So you get credited based on prepaying for the first hotel stay
you prepay for. And if you cancel that one, it doesn't matter if you had another one. It's not going to
apply to that other one. It's just, you're going to lose it is what. Yeah, it's a bummer.
They tie that credit to the, to the booking. And so yeah, yeah, you are going to lose it.
Okay. Speaking of losing things, do you lose any benefits if you book back to back stays?
So let's say you're trying to book, you know, the four nights at an edit property and you did
two back to back two nights stays. Are you going to lose any of your edit benefits?
benefits? Short answer, no. That's totally a great way to use up your two, $250, two-night stay or longer credits. The reason that, or a reason that it's a good question to ask is because this is different from how Amex does it. Amex, if you book back-to-back, fine hotel and resort stays, only,
the first night gets the on-property credit. You will get, like, other benefits, even with
Amex every day, like the free breakfast and whatnot, but the property credit is just once for
the length of the stay. Whereas with Chase, at least at the time of recording, we would expect you
would get two property credits. This episode was produced and edited by Carrie Yoder, music by
