Starting point is 00:00:00 What is really going on in Endocopia? This Twisted Games lore has been baffling players since its release with its abstract storytelling and absurd visuals. But if we make like The Surgeon and stitch the pieces together, the answer becomes clear. And the real villain of it all isn't even one of the characters inside the game. Hello, internet. Welcome to Game Theory, the show that plunges into the depths of a game to find the deep lore at its heart. And I have not been able to help but dive incredibly deep into the law of the latest indie horror title to take the internet by Storm Endocopia.
Starting point is 00:00:37 It's a point-and-click adventure game created by indie animator Andy Land in the style of classic 90s titles like Pajama Sam and Pupp, but with a dark and surreal twist, of course. The game stars Mello, a nine-year-old boy with amnesia trapped in the home of the monstrous Henry. On the computer in Mello's room, we find key hints to his backstory, an image of him falling off a truck, of Henry taking him home and of Mello with a squished head unable to draw straight. The implication is clear. Mello was separated from his family by accident.
Starting point is 00:01:06 Henry took him in and hit him on the head so many times he got amnesia. Mello now wants to escape and we the player are his guardian angel helping him to navigate the world. But other than that, the story is left in obscurity. Even when the credits roll after three endings, the game leaves a lot of unanswered questions. The first question is, WTF did I just play? But there's also more sensible questions. like what's actually happening beneath Henry's house? Who is this surgeon guy and what's his deal?
Starting point is 00:01:31 And have we been misreading Mello all along? Well, loyal theorists, if you change your scroll wheel to touch and follow me, I will guide you through this insane labyrinth of illogical plot lines. By analyzing the key themes and symbolism throughout the game, we can discover the true story behind this fantastic game. Mello starts off in Henry's house, which is host to a lot of secrets. Like how in the wall there is a strange cyborg man
Starting point is 00:01:56 named The Surgeon. Totally normal way to start a game. He sings a song about being in love with two women and then stitching them together into one person to be his bride. So someone has clearly been reading too much Frankenstein, combining two or more things into one, like stitching together a body from different parts. Although, I guess it's actually more of a reference to the 1931 Universal Frankenstein movie and its sequel The Bride of Frankenstein, as opposed to the original book, which doesn't have a bride at all. But regardless, the reference is clear. Surgeon himself is also a stitched together character. combining two classical characters, Frankenstein's monster and Dr. Frankenstein himself.
Starting point is 00:02:31 He's a doctor resurrecting a bride like Frankenstein, but the bride is for himself, and he is also made of replacement parts like the monster. The doctor in the movie is also named Henry Frankenstein, and our captor is called Henry. He's also got the signature hunchback of Igor-type characters, often taking on the role of Dr. Frankenstein's lab assistants. Henry is also a reference to Clungo from Banjo Cazooie, a lizard thing with large tusks, who is an eagle-type character as well. Once again, two Frankenstein characters stitched together.
Starting point is 00:03:01 My favorite example of this Everything is Frankenstein motif actually comes from the first screen in the game. In Mello's room, you can find a reference to Freddy Fish on the wall. Freddy Fish is a point-and-click series developed by Humongous Entertainment. But when you click this fish, she makes a honk noise. This is a reference to Humongous Entertainment to other popular franchise, Puppa. It's a Frankenstein reference to two different things combined into one. One of the main messages in Frankenstein is the,
Starting point is 00:03:26 irony that the monster, Adam, while looking like and being treated like a monster, it was actually Frankenstein who was the monster. He played God and refused to take accountability. In this story, our surgeon is literally both. He looks like and is a monster, combining his two loves into the bride for his own twisted game. But that also gives us a new way to look at the world we're experiencing. When we encounter frightening and disturbing characters and visuals, we are meant to ask ourselves, is this really a monster? Or is this something that just needs to be further understood? And this isn't the only insight we get from our dear old monster surgeon. We escape Henry's house by killing a clock and giving the password Cheshire to a parasite, following it down a toilet
Starting point is 00:04:07 into a world of misery, murder and office work. A not so subtle reference to the twisted and distorted world of Alice in Wonderland. A heads up of what else we can expect going forward. However, upon landing, Mello loses his hands, eyes and mouth, which he must now find from the three new lands available to us. Misery Town hosts a carnival, which should be all fun and games, but it's instead the exact opposite. We are required to learn about the brutal deaths of clowns in order to beat a game of whack-a-mole. And this carnival's version of the game operation has us actually cutting into a living man to get a prize out of his guts. And it's here that our buddy surgeon gives us
Starting point is 00:04:42 another insight. Replace the boards, replace the sails. Replace the crew, replace the nails. This beast, oh, nothing could kill. But what happens if the captain is ill? This sort of song is about the classic thought experiment, the ship of Theseus. The idea is, if you were to replace a single board from a ship, would it be the same ship? If yes, what if, over time, you replaced every board? Is it still the same ship? Our boy surgeon's answer is yes. But he then asks, what would happen if you replace the captain? To answer this question, let's look at the story of misery town itself. The town is financially dependent on the carnival, so the town's people attend it often. This made them tired of the same act over.
Starting point is 00:05:22 and over, so clowns, the boards, and the nails of the carnival were replaced often. But it's still the same carnival. The head of the carnival is a tyrannical trapezeist who mellow defeat, freeing the townspeople and the performers. With the trapezeist gone, people leave the carnival. This means it is not the same ship once it has a new captain. The next area is The Office. Now, the office is a sitcom about a paper company with a useless boss where nobody does any work.
Starting point is 00:05:49 My bad. The office in Endocopia is a corporation. about what used to be a paper company and now has a useless boss and nobody does any work. See, totally different. Everyone working here is unhappy. So Mello has to make them happy. He gives the workers a red ball, a vacation voucher, and also a stressful, which is a reference to the cursor icon in Sam and Max hit the road.
Starting point is 00:06:08 And then he is able to meet the boss. Seems like he's not doing a very good job at running this place. This boss is known as the AI. He is a combination of brain cells and memories from the company's founder and a supercomputer meant to help run the business. That makes him our frank. Frankenstein motif for this area. And he's replaced the founder and changed the company,
Starting point is 00:06:27 like getting a new captain on the ship of Theseus. But we're also introduced to the game's third major motif, copies. The AI shows us some AI art that he made. Yuck, you. And admits, so while his copy of the Mona Lisa isn't perfect, soon his method will be perfect. And he'll make art and life indistinguishable from one another. AI art is an example of a copy of a copy degrading over time.
Starting point is 00:06:50 And the AI is a distorted copy of the founder. Fitting for a company that used to make things like printers and photocopiers. Then, Bello kills it. Too right. And all of these things come together in our final area, Timesville. It's based on Animal Crossing. The cute animal villagers speak like Animal Crossing characters. The passage of time is an important mechanic. There is an aquarium to fill up, but it is anything other than a peaceful game. The town's story is all about death. Watching Arthur the Bear die, entering a haunted grave, finding the security guard brutally murdered when all he wanted to do was play space.
Starting point is 00:07:22 cadet pinball and minesweeper. We find references here to horror movies like The Shining, Silence of the Lambs, the Ring, and the scariest thing of all, having to be on slack while working from home. The village is stalked by a serial killer who uses the cute villagers' corpses in grotesque ways to put on puppet shows. The villagers are stitched together and puppeted to appear like they're alive. Corpses stitched together, you even need to say it, the right Honourable Fellow Surgeon also makes a return digging up bodies. And he tells Mello, he's using the spare parts for his patients. We also get a monstrous version of our friend Kathu.
Starting point is 00:07:54 And in the police station, there's a wanted poster for villagers with anomalies, tying together all of our motifs, Frankenstein stitching different things together, the ship of Theseus, and copies of copies degrading. And at this point, it became clear to me. The real story and the theme behind endocopia is that of replacement. Replacing one thing with another similar thing that carries on aspects of its identity.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Visiting each location for the first time gives mellow his body parts back. He finds his hands lying around, a skeleton gives him back his eyes, And the supercomputer that speaks in biblical references gives him a new mouth, like a reverse am from I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. But if one part of Mello has been replaced, is he the same Mello? The game would tell us that, yes, he is. The new mouth doesn't change him.
Starting point is 00:08:37 However, he is not the same person he was before he developed amnesia. We know this because when we run into a character who knows Mello from before his amnesia, he tells us that Mello used to play with him, but now they don't play together. Mello's name used to be Roger. Henry killed him with a blow to the head. Surgeon resurrected him, and he forgot his past and gave himself the name Mello. So his body parts are the boards from the ship of Theseus, but his mind is the captain. The character who tells us all of this is actually another Roger. This one is a copy of Mello that Surgeon made, and he's not exactly an accurate copy. It's another ship of Theseus situation. But there's actually a second part of the ship of Theseus thought
Starting point is 00:09:17 experiments that most people don't really talk about. Let's say you have the ship of Theseus and replace planks of wood one by one until every plank is replaced. But during that time, it's still sailing around as the ship of Theseus. Then we take all of those removed boards and build a brand new ship with all the pieces in their original places. Which one should then be called the ship of Theseus? In the real world, an insurance company would say that it's the one that's still sailing. This new ship, even though it's made of old parts, needs to be called something else. Big Roger retaining the name, But Mello keeping the actual body of Roger fits this hypothetical perfectly.
Starting point is 00:09:52 This is some pretty metaphysical stuff, and maybe you'll think about yourself and your life a little bit differently from now on. But the story is far from over. There's a lot more this game wants to teach us. You see, in Henry's house, Mello finds a drawing and a passage from a holy text about a sleeping god. His head is framed against the sun like a halo, and interestingly, the drawing shows that he has a lot of limbs, four arms, and at least three, three, legs, which appear like the two stitched together bodies of the bride and her many limbs. Now, it turns out, the world of this game exists inside this god's body. Henry's house is the throat and the worlds below are his insights.
Starting point is 00:10:32 This raises a lot of questions, especially about how and why this relates to our themes of being replaced. But they aren't answered until the very end of the game. There are two normal endings of endocopia. In one, Mello follows the parasite out of the sleeping god into the world. wasteland. The parasite moves into an abandoned house and says that he had to leave because the sleeping god is a sinking ship, a sinking ship of Theseus, where Surgeon has been repairing and replacing body parts. That's right, surgeon is Frankenstining their own gods. But in this ending,
Starting point is 00:11:04 the task is never complete. Mello walks until he finds his own home and his family waiting inside. They are neglectful, abusive, and ground Mello for going missing. In his room, he then finds his sister and tells her the story of endocopia. The end. With this information, we can deduce the meaning of the game's title. Endocopia sounds a lot like Endoscope, a camera that's inserted down a patient's throat by a doctor to examine their insides. Believe me, I am way too familiar with this procedure given all my weird voice issues. Mello has been going down the Sleeping God's throat to explore and heal it by restarting its organs. It's an ongoing joke that Mello can't read, and so he's calling it endocopia instead of endoscopia.
Starting point is 00:11:46 But an endoscopy isn't the only procedure being referenced here. There's a throat procedure called an esophagram, which is an alternative throat examination to an endoscopy. It involves coating the throat with barium sulfate and looking at it through an X-row. The barium sulfate is usually delivered to the patient's throat by having them swallow a marshmallow. Characters call mellow marshmallow throughout the game. And while it's presented like a joke about them mishearing him,
Starting point is 00:12:09 it's actually the same joke about how mellow can't read. He is the one who names himself, not Mallow, but Mello. Surgeon says at one point that he doesn't know why Mello gave himself that name. But he does tell Mello the meaning of endoscopia, saying it's Latin for to look inside. Except it's not actually Latin, it's Greek. Surgeon is remembering endoscopia wrong and Mello is reading endoscopia wrong. It's like the truth degrading over time in a game of telephone or a photocopy of a photocopy,
Starting point is 00:12:40 which is appropriate because the suffix copia actually refers to copies. And now Mello is retelling the event. of this story to his sister. It's something for all of us to bear in mind. Stories are often clouded by the tellers own perception of reality. And the more a story is retold, the more it distorts and becomes a copy of a copy. Maybe it gets Frankenstein with other stories.
Starting point is 00:12:59 I mean, mythology is literally that, with different writers combining characters to tell a more cohesive story, but it's not true to the original intent. So when we hear someone recount an event or tell us a fact, it's important for us to bear in mind what biases they may have, how they might have perceived the event
Starting point is 00:13:16 differently to what was intended by the original action. Two sides to every story and all that. Who would have thought a little marshmallow not being able to read would be so profound? But we're not done. In the next ending, the parasite doesn't go to the surface, so Mello goes alone and has to fight Henry. Henry accidentally punches the sleeping gods uvular. This causes it to vomit up bile as well as almost every character you've met.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Mello's friends then carry him to the abandoned house and they make it a home together. Mello invites everyone to roast marshmallows on the fire. Since Mello is a marshmallow, this is symbolic of him sharing himself with his friends, and healing them instead of this giant weird god. He's not going to sacrifice them and use parts of them for his own gain, or for the chance for some great being who would maybe fix everything. Instead, he gives out part of himself to everyone. This is actually a philosophy known as secular humanism.
Starting point is 00:14:05 The idea that we are the ones in control. Trusting our own resilience builds up self-confidence, and it makes us realize that we are both the problem, but also the solution. It's encouraging us to take ownership of our lives and focus more on the people around us and how we can help each other, rather than looking for some godlike being
Starting point is 00:14:23 to solve our problems. This is the happy ending, and it does give you a nice, warm feeling on both her story and a deeper meaning level, but it's not the most satisfying one. Sure, we have two interesting interpretations and philosophies to carry forward, but neither Mello or us the player,
Starting point is 00:14:37 learn the truth about this game's law. And let's be honest, that's why we're all here, but fear not, because that info comes from the third ending. Mello meets Sgtin in the sleeping god's heart, and we learn that Surgian was planning to revive the sleeping god so that this world doesn't fall apart. He's been repairing the body physically,
Starting point is 00:14:56 replacing body parts board by board, but his final step is to have the bride ascend to take over its mind, to be its new captain. The game ends with Sgton reading from a book, The Bride ascending, and Mello and Surgent being crushed to death. And I don't know. How I feel about this, this certainly isn't a happy ending. So I dug a bit deeper and theorists, this is where things get weird. There are secret mini games you can play to unlock quick snippets of law.
Starting point is 00:15:24 That sounds familiar. We see one of a woman dead on a hospital gurney. The surgeon approaches the bride, an angel speaks to the bride telling them to enter. Then a body in the hospital room sits up. So it seems that resurrection in this world is a lot more spiritual than scientific. Surgeon says that the spiritual realm is beyond his understanding. so he doesn't know why it works, but he does know that he needs spiritual help. In the surgeon's book, we then find the seal of the demon Citri, from the Ars Gauisha,
Starting point is 00:15:52 a section of a book containing the names, ranks and seals of 72 demons. This symbol is covered in drops of blood, a common technique used in summoning said demons. In order to resurrect his love, the bride, the surgeon needs to summon Citri, the demon of love and desire. So that wasn't an angel that brought her back,
Starting point is 00:16:10 it was a demon. We can find the bride. ride under the floor of Henry's house. She is in incredible pain. Held up like she's tied to a stake in a distorted crucifixion. If you click her, she rides in pain and screams. And after four clicks, the game crashes with the error code in binary that reads, Oh Lord, we love how you suffer. When the bride ascends, she's symbolically rising from hell to earth, as opposed to Jesus's ascension from earth to heaven. And the god she becomes after this ascension is a being who created a world of flesh and suffering.
Starting point is 00:16:42 This is a distortion, a degraded copy of the Christian story of Jesus' death and resurrection. The holy text we found earlier says, If dust breathes, shall it not dream? We are that dream. Dust is another way of saying dead in the Bible. For example, in Genesis 3, verse 19, it says, By the sweat of your brow, you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken.
Starting point is 00:17:05 For dust you are, and to dust you will return. The sleeping God has returned to the ground. Literally, it's been buried underground. And now it is dust. It is dead. But this holy text tells us that dust breathes and that if it breathes, apparently it can dream. Us being that dream is a connection back to Alice in Wonderland, which ends with Alice waking up and Wonderland all being a dream. Don't worry, this isn't going to be a it was all a dream theory. And the reason for that is because we know that the people in the body was swallowed by the sleeping god. He didn't literally create them in a dream. He took stuff that was
Starting point is 00:17:38 already there and made this world for those people. So, This is a demonic flesh god who doesn't create things, only puts them together and is resurrected with inverse Christ-like rituals. This is all a reference to the Gnostic belief of the demiurge. Gnosticism was a controversial, well, actually heretical branch of Christianity, that believed the God mentioned in the Old Testament was actually evil. He did not create the universe. He merely crafted our bodies out of what already existed. The dust.
Starting point is 00:18:08 He is the god of the material world, which is why we suffer and sin. trapped our souls in our bodies. Our souls were actually created by the true God, the good God from the New Testament that Jesus preached about. Some Gnostics even believed the serpent in the Garden of Eden was actually Jesus freeing humans from the direct control of the Demiurge. This is referenced in Endocopia by the Genesis 01 computer. It gives Mello the instruction to literally ascend the corporate hierarchy akin to a serpent in order to confront and dismantle the authority at its peak. So the serpent is dismantling the highest authority from Genesis. That authority in Endocopia is the AI that runs the office, who refers to himself using the phrase, I am, which is a quote from the God of the Old Testament, I am that I am. So Mello is the serpent confronting the Old Testament God.
Starting point is 00:19:00 Ipsophato, Mello is Jesus. And that is a Latin phrase, surgeon. Not only did he come back to life, but he was also able to do things as surgeon, someone who is only playing God, could not. He's able to put his own body back together and remain Mello, unlike Sgtin who's replaced himself with robot parts and is losing his memory and comprehension. Mello finds a mannequin that he brings to life by copying drawing of her face onto her. Her name is Scribly and she's adorable. Surgeon is only capable of making a mere copy of a person, Big Roger, who isn't very well put together. Surgeon says that in another life, he might be Mello's father, but not in this one. Because Jesus's
Starting point is 00:19:38 father isn't the demiurge, it's the spiritual god. But in other brain, branches of Christianity, the Old Testament God and the New Testament God are one in the same. Most directly, in the good ending, Mello shares marshmallows with his friends, symbolic of Jesus sharing bread at the Last Supper, which he referred to as his body. Jesus had 12 disciples at that last supper, one of which was his betrayer, Judas. However, I only count 11 at Mello's marshmallow party. So who's the 12th? Who is the one that betrays him?
Starting point is 00:20:06 The only other person that can interact with him, the one that can decide whether he gets his happy ending or is crushed by the god. Us. Mello refers to us as his guardian angel, but remember, this game has been a story about distorted copies and corruptions. The only other time we saw an angel in this game, they were actually the opposites, a demon. And throughout this story, we led Mello to the Demiages heart just so he could die, allowing the ritual to be completed.
Starting point is 00:20:35 A ritual that has been set up by the surgeon, someone whose memory is failing them. He doesn't know who Mello's guardian angel is, or what his notes even say anymore. But in those notes, we found the seal of Citri, covered in blood. This is his ritual. He summoned Citri, summoned us to bring Mello here back to the room where it all began, and bringing this evil fake God back to life. We were the villain the entire time. We used the themes of replacement to manipulate Mello into doing our bidding
Starting point is 00:21:06 and robbing him of his happy ending. But hey, that's just a theory. A game theory. Thanks for watching.
