How in the world is it Doc Holliday's business?
In episode 799 of the Meat Eater podcast, host Stephen Rinella talked with author and
Old West historian Mark Lee Gardner.
Whenever there was a posse formed, Doc Holliday was always there to help out.
So he's like, I'm sick, I'm half dead.
I'd love to throw in.
So he just gets excited when there's a posse.
It's like your buddy drew a tag, you know.

I'm dancing with the basketball players
on a ledge at the pool, just absolutely going ham,
Pounding Coors lights left and right
Probably about 25 of these bad boys
I was 21 years old
I was still supposed to be in college

gronk
Jules
dudes on dudes is the best
quick question for you
it's mini camp season right now
you both
you both had different paths
the NFL gronk second round
round jules seventh round
can you explain what your first
off season was like from you know that
April when you get on the team all the way up
to like the first game of the season
like you see all these OTAs and this and this
and rookies and this can you just give some more details
and some explanation on what that whole process
is like thank you
all right
Well, I'll go first here, Jules.
This is a great question because I was kind of in a different situation here.
The lockout occurred after my rookie year.
So I never had an offseason.
And he asked specifically, I'm pretty sure your first offseason was like.
So that's why I'm going into my first off season because I never had a typical NFL off season
because I was off for six months straight because of the lockout.
And I loved every moment of it.
you know I can tell you that and in April I was at the University of Arizona at pool parties
I also you can look at on YouTube I'm dancing with the basketball players on a ledge at the
pool just absolutely going ham pounding cores lights left and right probably about 25 of these
bad boys I was 21 years old I was still supposed to be in college so it was the best time of
my life in the lockout couldn't have happened at a better moment in my life as well because
I didn't have to go and train because I got to train in the morning wherever I was.
And then I would just party all day.
And I was 21 years old, typical college student going here.
I was also visiting my friends.
One of my friends, Tico, he went to the university.
He went to Miami, Ohio.
Great college town.
Great place to party, especially when you're that age as well.
Wait, wait, did you have your signing bonus, though?
Yeah, I had my signing bonus.
Oh, so you had money.
I had money already.
So I had about a million in the bank, rolling around, going to college is still,
getting tables for $400
and I felt like
I was a multi-multi-billionaire
just rolling in with a million dollars
and getting tables for $400 and buying
all these college students
bottles and
how did I train? I would wake up
after a couple nights and
just go run a couple hundreds
you know
catch some footballs from my friends
that drank with me the whole night
before and then
literally showed up and
dominated every single day where coach balochick gave me a parking spot in the front row because
i had the best training camp of all time and that's how it happened because of the lockout
and i had videos of me partying everywhere your rookie year this was after my yeah after my rookie year
yeah it was like a slow key like people knew about my skills like at that time
like those those type of skills vastly different than mine what was your uh vastly different what was
your uh first off season like first off season is still stressed you know it it is we talking
rookie off season or we're going into our rookie year no going into your second year or is it
going into our second year first off season so my first off season was is after your first year of
playing well i'll go my rookie year all right rookie year all right
year off season you get drafted you go to rookie mini camp so it's just the rookies they put you through
these camp installs so they give you kind of the day-to-day life of what it's going to be like
a little taste of it in your rookie camp that's like a three-day camp for me it was like very stressful
and very hard uh you know i'm a seventh round draft pick uh i'm in a part of the country
year I've never been or never even heard of.
I didn't know where New England really was.
I didn't pay attention in my sociology.
Social studies class.
Geography, whatever.
I'm a geography guy.
Like my map skills are like my geography skills.
I didn't know where New England.
I kind of knew where it was.
But it's up here.
You have so many of these things going through your head,
your head as a kid.
Am I going to be around?
How's this going?
I was learning a new position.
You got to learn your formations.
You got to learn.
What was your favorite position you learned?
I like the Z position.
Oh, sorry.
Get back to what you were really talking about.
Oh, the F?
Oh, the F position.
Yeah.
Wow.
So, you know, it's very stressful time for these kids that come into a new area.
They're learning at a very rapid rate, you know,
because you want to learn as much as you can and get all the reps you can.
and before the vets come,
because once the vets come,
you don't get any reps,
and then it becomes super mental.
So then, you know,
the one or two reps that you do have,
you have to not fuck up the formation,
not fuck up the snap count,
nowhere to go, know the personnel group,
know your assignment,
know what the other defense is doing,
know your adjustments,
and do it all properly
so you get another opportunity, you know?
So this is a tough time for a lot of guys,
and it shouldn't be a tough time
because they're digested,
a lot and they're learning a lot, which is completely different than your second season
where you have that all in, you know, your brain already a little bit, so it becomes a little
easier. But your rookie years, it's a tough year if you're trying to go in and learn and make
the team. You know what I mean? So next, that was a great call. That was a great call.
That was. It was a great question. We had different scenarios. Well, you did the second year. I did the
rookie year. It's all the same, but different. I, I did the same thing even, even going into my first
year. Question number one. What's Rob and Jules perfect meal from KDP 64-94? All right, KDP
64-94. Great numbers you got in there. They're just a little off. Oh, I know, 64-9. That's why it's
6494.
6494.
So the 69's for you and the other 6.
And the 69 is back for you.
I see what that person is doing with their numbers.
That is a good one right there.
That's creative KDP 6494.
But my perfect meal to me, it was my mom's chicken souffle,
but now it has been taken over by another meal by my mom.
I love when she cooks on the grill.
And there's this sauce that's only in Buffalo.
It's called Chaveta's.
sauce and it's like a vinaurette sauce and it just has a couple spices in it as well very healthy for you
and you put it on chicken and that's called chavetta's chicken so my mom has the chavetta sauce at her
house and also she gets her unbelievable steaks that she gets from Costco uh she gets these rib eyes
and these tomahawks and stuff from Costco unbelievable steaks they're very um you know kirklin brand
very underrated it's not actually underrated if you know about kirklin brand it's it's it's
the best, one of the best brands out there.
It really is.
And she cooks on the grill and then she has twice baked potatoes and then she also
grills the asparagus.
And that's the perfect meal in my eyes with a side of blue cheese from Buffalo to dip
your chevettes chicken and your steak into.
Wow.
That's a good meal.
I was going to say French dip, but that was really good.
I like a good French dip.
Always a good French tip.
Let's get on to do another one.
favorite dunking on the bills moment for you, Rob, from Pigeon Man.
All right.
My favorite dunking on the bills moment.
I would say, I have like a couple favorite of Rob's dunking on.
Oh, all right.
I remember when he was younger, you just scored touchdowns anytime we play there.
My favorite, yes, but what was my favorite moment?
I think you did like a, you did like a rolling, a running jump spike there.
Yes, yes.
Yeah, where you like double hopped.
I get a little momentum with skipping and then I hop and then I spike it.
And that's how you get the most power behind a gronk spike.
You got to get that momentum built up.
And that's what I was doing in Buffalo because I was playing in my hometown and I was excited.
I wanted the best gron spike that I could possibly do.
But my favorite dunking on the bills moment, man.
Like there's so many great moments that we had going against the bills.
It wasn't like any time we like never really knocked them out of the playoffs or anything.
They just were never, you know, a team to be, you know, almost making the playoffs.
So we never knocked them out.
Never knocked them out.
They weren't like they are now.
So like I would say my one-handed touchdown catch first.
That was a sick one.
That was a sick one.
It was in the corner of the end zone at Gillette Stadium.
I was one-on-one with their all pro safety.
Who was it at the time?
Poirer?
No, not Poirer.
The other one.
Hyde?
Yeah.
Mike Hyde.
one of the, Michael Hyde, one of the best cover
safeties, all pro at the time.
He was covering me, but I'm uncoverable
because of just my size. I'm not saying
because of how great I am, I'm saying because I can
use my size to my advantage.
And then I have the athleticism
at my size to be able to
move around so, and
get the ball over a smaller
defender. So Tom placed it where only
I can make the play. I stuck my hand out,
turned around a little bit, grabbed it one hand,
kept my two feet in bounds, tipy-toed
into the end zone and made a one,
unbelievable one-hand catch at Jolette Stadium.
That was a good one.
It was like an alley-oop, basically.
That was my alley-up dunk on the Buffalo Bills.
I had a couple two touchdown games against the bills on the road there.
That 13 one was kind of cool.
It was like my little breakout, a little two-piece.
That was probably one of my favorite movie.
Also, the one when we clinched before you got there in 2009 or something.
Or were you there in 2010 when we clinched and we got snowed in?
Yes.
Oh, no, I was there.
That was 2010.
That was 2011.
11, 2010.
10.
Yeah, 2010 my rookie year.
Yes.
And then we got snow there.
Right after the game, a snowstorm came so we couldn't fly home.
Dinosaur barbecue.
Yes, you guys went there in Rochester.
I actually stayed back and I called it right up in the morning to meet you guys to fly out
because obviously my family's there in Buffalo.
So I stayed back with my family and I actually missed that trip.
And I heard so much about that trip when you guys went to dinosaur barbecue.
but that was a good game that was now let's get into another one we got a couple more here
all right here we go if both of you are gamers what games are you currently playing from mjc i'm not
really a gamer right now but when i was in college it was halo halo was just to me one of the
best games to ever you know come about my life uh oh another one as well because i gained a little
bit going, you know, that was college life was Halo. Going into the NFL, I played zombies.
Yeah, you played a lot of zombies. Zombies was on call of duty. And I used to run home right after
team meetings, right after, you know, that you practice ends at like 2.30. And then you go in the
meetings at 3.30 to 4.30 to watch film. And then we would be cut from the stadium at 4.30.
I literally used to run home so I can get on the couch with nasty Nate dog. You know who nasty
nice dog is. And we would put on zombies. And we would play zombies.
from 435 the moment I got home because I hustled home here don't tell hopefully Josh
McDaniels isn't listening right now I would run out of our meetings play zombies from
435 to like literally 1030 at night and then go to bed and then do it again the next day
yeah that's that's the NFL life yeah I got to like level 38 that's a I wasn't a zombies guy
I play I like the war zones and stuff and I was in the fortnight for a little
Right now, it's just FC 26, football club 26, the new FIFA.
That's the only one I'm playing.
That's the only one I'm playing.
How does taking a sick day in the NFL work from the kid with like five D's?
The kid, is this kid rid?
This has to be kid Rick, because kid rid always wanted a sick day.
He just wanted to chill at home, get some rest, do his thing on the couch.
I don't think of ever had a sick day.
Yes. So how do sick days work in the NFL? I mean, you really truly have to be sick in order to be sent home. Actually, I got, well, the COVID. I got COVID. Yes. Well, COVID was totally different different. That's called COVID. That's called home for a week. That was a whole different protocol. Sick days, like, you have to hold you in a trainer's room and like, say, here, here's some fluids. And you have to sit there by yourself. Like, that was like, I just remember doing that once when I was really sick.
Yeah, and like, they isolate you.
They would send you home if like you truly have like the sweats.
They would only send you home is like they take your temperature and you truly just show right on the spot that your temperature, you know, you're, you have a fever right.
Yeah, they'd send you home.
They would send you home then.
Hands down.
And then they'd have a trainer come check on you or something like that you're, they take care of you.
But only if you're like truly, truly, truly sick.
Yeah.
Like you can't just have like a little cold.
No.
They're never going to send you home.
You know, it's not just like, I'm going to go in.
No.
Yeah.
I got a running nose out.
Like literally, you got to be dying.
Dying.
Food poisoning.
I got,
I had food poisoning once.
They sent me home.
It was bad.
You know,
I kind of had a,
like,
you had a kind of prove it.
Yeah.
So, like,
I had like food poisoning.
And I would like,
one in and I was like,
yo, Jim,
look at the toilet.
I puked.
I would show him.
I'd be like,
yo,
I'm throwing up while taking a diarrhea.
And I feel like.
So did Jim Whalen come watch?
you shit. I would say, come here, come watch me
just to prove it. And he'd be like, oh, I believe
you. I believe I'm not. I'll be like, no, come
freaking watch me, diarrhea and throw
up at the same time, Jimbo.
Like, I'm sick. Like, that's
the only way you got sick days in the NFL.
That's the only way. Yeah. So to answer
your question, that was it. Yeah, we got
one more. I like this question. This guy's
asking me about my
puzzling skills. Oh. Oh. So
Rob, you recently on your Instagram
story were showing off an elaborate
500 piece puzzle.
that you had completed.
Yes, I did.
Thank you very much.
And by the way,
I only showed off one of the 500-piece puzzles that I completed.
I actually completed two 500-piece puzzles,
and that equals 1,000 pieces.
Whoa, that's a lot of pieces, Jules.
That's a lot of pieces.
I can tell you that.
Have you ever glued together a completed puzzle and then framed it?
I never glued together a completed puzzle,
but there are like these cases now.
Like, it's like, what is it?
Like models?
No.
You, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you,
frame them.
Oh, you, you don't, you, you don't glue it together.
You don't glue it together.
It was just, um, a beach house.
One of the puzzles was, and the other one was, I was an ice cream stand.
And I'm becoming so good at puzzles.
Back in the day, a 500 piece puzzle like this was, would have taken me about, you know, probably 15 to
20 hours to do.
And now I'm knocking out these.
puzzles 500 piece puzzles I sat there I did it for five and a half hours and I woke up and I did it for another hour and a half so I knocked it out in a total of seven hours so once you get on a stroll once you get on a roll I mean you just boom you start knocking it out what are you thinking about when you're doing these puzzles you're just thinking about finding the next piece and getting it done and and fitting them together because every piece you fit together you feel accomplished you feel satisfied and it's rewarding so 500 pieces
you feel satisfied 499 times not 500 times why jules because the first piece isn't done you can't
there's there's always going to be one piece that doesn't connect out of 500 at the very beginning
499 connections you get this is not 500 no there's 500 pieces but you only get 499 matches
like pieces together hey this question this question's for drunk you know i'm in offensive
of coordinator at a high school level
and I'm thinking a lot
recently. I got a big tight end, very athletic
like you.
What does he have to do
for me to get him open as much
as you did in the play action game?
You slip through, he's got a decent
quarterback. I want to know what I can do
to get him open. Well, the biggest
thing, coach,
is to get
him to grind in the blocking
game, to make him a
great blocker.
That's what I'm talking about, Julian.
I love that harmonica.
You got to bring it every single time we podcast.
It just enlightens my mode.
It just brightens my mind when I hear that.
That's music to my ear.
So keep doing that whenever.
Oh, there we go, baby.
I'm just tingling right now from my head to my toes, baby.
And that's what I'm talking about.
I feel like I can dance all night long and just tippy tap all over the place.
Hit it one more time, Jules.
Oh, coach, that's the sound that you want to hear.
when your tight end releases and it's a play action out of the backfield and
the quarterback just dumps it right off to your tight end.
So get him the block, get him to be nasty and the blocking game.
So every single time that it's a play action, the longbackers are scared of them and step up,
you know, to, you know, to stop that run.
And then, boom, he has to have a good feel about where to get open on the play action as well.
It's going to be different every single time in the play action game on where to go to
because it all depends on how hard the linebacker step up to the line of scrimmage
when that play action is going down and make sure your quarterback is selling it too
in the back field with the running back and repetition after repetition.
So he gets the feel of where he should be with the quarterback out there.
So make him a fierce blocker and then have him have that feel of where he should be on the
field with linebackers stepping up to stop the run.
Hey, Mr. Edelman, Mr. Grancowski.
First, I wanted to say that me and Mr.
Ellman, we share the same name.
We're both Julian's.
I think that's super cool.
But the question I wanted to ask was,
Jules, if you woke up and you were in Gronk's body and vice versa,
what would be the first thing y'all would do?
I think something pretty funny would come out of that,
and I can't wait to hear what I'll say.
Thank you very much for your time.
Bye.
first thing i would do i'd go take a piss and be like is this thing mine this thing bolted on
this thing's bolted it no i would i would you'd be looking for it you'd be looking for it buddy
you'd be like what happened wow how do i pee i can't find it i think i would go to a doorway
and i would just like bend down a couple times just i just want to go
feel the anxiety of hitting your head on a door or i would just go do like a 360 windmill dunk
there you go what would you do if you were in my little squirrel body well this is a great chill
question julian because we were just talking about our bodies and how to take care of them and what
hurts us still and how to take care of and all that stuff but if i had your body you know what i would
do every single day that you walk by me in the locker room with your shirt off what would i tell you
that your boxer ripped.
So I would wake up, I was look in the mirror, look down, give myself a nice night,
like, yeah, I'm finally boxer ripped.
And I'd just start throwing some haymakers like I'm fighting someone in the ring.
Oh, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
And then I walk away just like, yeah, boxing, here I come.
Floyd Mayweather got nothing on me, boy.
well that's that's a fun question yeah that is that's a freaky Friday good question

I knew it was a bomb the second that it exploded.
I felt it ripped through me.
In season two of Rip Current, we ask, who tried to kill Judy Berry and why?
They were climbing trees and they were sabotaging logging equipment in the woods.
She received death threats before the bombing.
She received more threats after the bombing.
I think that this is a deliberate attempt to sabotage our movement.
