Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, hello, all my people, what's up? It's Questlove. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with the one and only ASAP Rocky. He reflects on his journey from Harlem Roots to global icon status and discovering the hip-hop origin of his name. The ledge was on the TV. Raqim had the bucket hat can go join him on. That's Raqim.
Starting point is 00:00:21 That's who you named after. I just was like, damn, that fucking I swear. But listen to the Questlove show on the Iheart radio app. podcast or wherever you get your podcast. This season on Dear Chelsea with me, Chelsea Handler, we've got some incredible guests like Kumail Nanjiani. Let's start with your cat. How is she?
Starting point is 00:00:43 She is not with us. Great, great, great way to start. Maybe you will cry. Ross Matthews. You know what kids always say to me? Are you a boy or girl? Oh my God. All the time.
Starting point is 00:00:54 That's so funny. I love it. So I try to butcher it up for kids so they're not confused. Yeah, but you're butching it up is basically like. Avery woman. It's like Doris Day. Right? No, I turn it to be Arthur.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Listen to these episodes of Dear Chelsea on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A new year doesn't ask us to become someone new. It invites us back home to ourselves. I'm Mike Delarocha, a host of sacred lessons. A space for men to pause, reflect, and heal. This year, we're talking honestly about mental health,
Starting point is 00:01:24 relationships, and the patterns we're ready to release. If you're looking for clarity, connection and healthier ways to show up in your life. Sacred Lessons is here for you. Listen to Sacred Lessons with Mike Deloach on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. This is Dr. Jesse Mills, host of the Mailroom podcast. Each January, men promise to get stronger, work harder, and fix what's broken?
Starting point is 00:01:48 But what if the real work isn't physical at all? I sat down with psychologist Dr. Steve Poulter to unpack shame, anxiety, and the emotional pain men were never taught how to name. Part of the way through the Valley of Despair is realizing this has happened and you have to make a choice whether you're going to stay in it or move forward. Our two-part conversation is available now. Listen to the mailroom on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, for wherever you get your favorite shows. Welcome to Games with Names. I'm Julian Edelman and we got a brand new compilation highlight reel starting now.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Now Vince Wilfark on why he hated the Jets. Now, how much did we hate the Jets? We hated the Jets. It was like... We hated the Jets. People sleep on that low-key. And the crazy thing is I told Bill one day, I said, coach, you know, you have to let, you got to kind of let us know, like, why?
Starting point is 00:02:42 Like, what's the why? You know, because, I mean, you know, when we know Jets coming up, we're like, uh, if the Jets, but why? Like, why we got to, like, so he kind of explained to us and like, oh, okay, we got you. Like, but we just wanted the way. Like, we're going to ride for you, Bill. But at the same time, and like, you're telling me to do something and then talk trash to somebody.
Starting point is 00:03:02 I don't even know why. Like, what is the why? I know. But, you know, but how you know how it is, you know, everybody has that one team. Division. Boston, New York. It's that one team, you know, so. There's a lot.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Yeah, man. But Bill hated him. Yes, he did, boy. With a passion. Let's get into these Patriots. Let's get in these. Speaking of Bill, these were the New England. led by coach Bill Belichick, 12 and 4, Josh McDaniels running the offense,
Starting point is 00:03:29 Maddie P running the defense, coming off that Super Bowl loss to the Giants, brutal. And then in November, big one acquired a Keeb Thielib. That was huge. Gotta love Keeb. Notable rookies on this team, Chandler Jones, Dante Hightower, Nate Ebner. It's a pretty good draft class. Really good draft. And we talked about this earlier.
Starting point is 00:03:45 This was like an all-star team practically. 557 total points, just whooping up on people, putting up numbers. 10th consecutive 10 plus win season. Yeah, we had a squad, man. Dang, Brandon Lloyd did that. B. Lloyd. B. Lloyd. Deon Branch. West Welker.
Starting point is 00:04:02 B. Lloyd was low-key, one of the best Routrunners I ever played with. Yeah. He was so, you remember, he was like smooth. Yeah. The Pink Panther out there. We had a squad. How about Akeeb to leave?
Starting point is 00:04:14 How fun of a teammate was he? He was great. You know what the crazy thing is? I remember when we played against Tampa and, We gotten fights with them. Yeah, yeah, yeah. People all hated them. And I remember when to tell him leave.
Starting point is 00:04:26 I'm like, hey, I'm from down this way. We don't want to play this game. As soon as he comes to the locker, we traded for him. We looked at each other. We chopped it up. We started laughing. I'm like, man, I'm glad you on our score out, man. Let's go do this.
Starting point is 00:04:38 Hey, you remember the first game he got a pick? Oh, yeah. And I'm like, he was out of shade. Mid-season. Yeah, yeah, mid-season. I had to get him in shape. I was the one who was running one-on-ones with him after practice. Great team, babe.
Starting point is 00:04:49 I love to leave, man. Right. He's funny too. Hey, Big V, fuck you, man. He was funny. It was so fun. Great teammate, though. I mean, I love guys that has a mentality of, hey, whatever it takes to win, that's what we do is. We're going to wear a chip on our shoulder.
Starting point is 00:05:07 I want you to match it. And we had that. That's the thing we had. You know, we had guys that's just like, we're ready to bite a chunk out of your neck. We didn't care. You know what I mean? Without a doubt. No, I just have one, another question,
Starting point is 00:05:21 random. Like, what did you and Randy used to talk about in stretch line? Me and Randi, oh, anything other than football? Anything other than football? You used to play catch. Yeah, I remember. We used to break up offense and defense, and Randy would be over in the defense with Big V. Yeah, we used to talk about nothing. And you remember every, what it was, every Friday, me and him had our one-on-one we did.
Starting point is 00:05:47 We used to do our one-on-one every Friday, but, man, we used to do our one-on-one every Friday, but, man, We said, man, you know, but explain that. What do you mean to one-on-one? So Randy would be a DB. I would be a receiver, and Pett will be the quarterback. Oh, pet. So I would run routes and Randy Garvey, you know. That was our every Friday.
Starting point is 00:06:03 How many, who won them? Me. Every time. I won majority of them. Yeah, he had a couple of them, but I won a majority. About 80% I won. 80%? Yeah, I beat him down.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Did you ever have to cover him? No. That wasn't, that wasn't a rule. I didn't ask him to be an offensive line. So I'm like, you can't play your position. We both out of position. Do you remember Randy getting watching, like,
Starting point is 00:06:25 didn't he watch Dateline every Friday night or something? And he would fucking explain it to the receivers and the receiver meeting. For like, the whole receiver meeting on Saturday would be Randy breaking down what I was on Dateline or 60 minutes. Randy was funny. He loved that. And then this motherfucker tried to cut this dick on. I'm like, I'm like a rookie.
Starting point is 00:06:47 He's just like, oh my God. Oh, now, how is it going against Dante Scarnicchio offense lines? I love Scar. Scar? I love Scar. I love Scar, too. And one of the best teammates I ever have is Logan Mankins. Oh, Meg.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Mac. Let me tell you, that's probably the best teammate I had. Why? I love. Just because of what he stood for. It's just, he's a man's man. Like, he's just tough, lovable. Just a rider.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Like, He fight for you? Yeah, like, I don't care who you are. If you're a patriot and you met, oh, it's going down. Oh, yeah. But it was just his mentality and he was just a great football player. He's just a tough player. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:32 I love players that's doable and just tough. I love tough players. Give me a tough player any day over anybody with talent and that's not tough. Give it to me. Yeah. Simple as that. He was also cattle ranchal strong. Yeah, when a big, him bulker.
Starting point is 00:07:46 His, his, he wears, he would wear the same thing every day. Yeah, he don't care. Car, hard jacket. That's my type of guy. Like, come in from hunting. Remember how him and Matt Lai used to come in from hunting with blood on them? Like, it's the craziest thing ever. Like, I love that, you know?
Starting point is 00:08:01 I love that. They come in, shower up. They got blood. They just killed some turkeys or whatever. Dead turkey in the fridge. You remember when they brought the duck and put it in Donald Thomas's fucking locker? That's what I miss. I don't miss the game itself.
Starting point is 00:08:15 I miss the camarader just hanging out in the locker room two, three hours after we finished and just sitting down and drinking and gatorade and just hanging out in the locker room. Like, it's nothing to be leaving at 7 o'clock, 8 o'clock. No. It's 20 of us, you know, and that's how you build camarader. That's how you build a team full of leaders and understanding what it takes to win. We had that. We did.
Starting point is 00:08:39 We had that. And you could tell the teams now who have that in their locker room, how they play. Yeah. You know, so that's what I'm hoping to see from this new. era in New England is just bring that camaraderie bag. Brain put football first like we used to. Main thing, the main thing. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:08:59 Because a lot of times now is more stuff outside of football people concerned about and football is secondary. It's tougher for these younger kids too, though. They're getting thrown this cheddar in so many different ways. And it's such a pivotal thing to have your social team, your fucking brand. I mean, I'm a product of it. Yeah, right. But I still keep the main.
Starting point is 00:09:20 same thing that you know it's just that's that's the factor you have to and that's how and that's why I retire you because I saw the rookies coming in and I just didn't I don't like what they stood for and I'm like this is not how I I came through and I learned the ball and played football like football is first
Starting point is 00:09:36 well guard is first then football you know what I'm saying but they was coming in football wasn't even on radar we would have guys leave the locker room didn't even shower drop their clothes and head and I'm like what's shower pill like right full shower It is what it is.
Starting point is 00:09:51 The Brady? Let's rip through the... Gotcha. Let's move through the game. All right, leading into this when the paths were right in a little bit of a slow start, started out one and two, lost two of the first three,
Starting point is 00:10:05 but got back on track. They're coming into this thing, seven and three. The Jets, meanwhile, four and six, trying to find some hope and salvage this season, but as we know, that did not happen.
Starting point is 00:10:14 First quarter scoreless. That's a Thanksgiving game. Thanksgiving game, Prime time. Fellas, what's it like playing on Thanksgiving? I like it. It was cool. I mean, it's tough playing on the road on Thanksgiving.
Starting point is 00:10:29 Yeah. Yeah. But you know what? At the end of the day, it's like, you know, business is business. We got to do what we got to do. That's right. But I would rather be home on Thanksgiving than playing the game. I would tell you that.
Starting point is 00:10:39 Me too. But I always also thought of it as like when we were home and kids, right? We would be at home. We were watching football, but we'd all be playing football before the football game. and before the feast. So it was like a privilege that we're playing pro football fucking Thanksgiving. All eyes on you guys.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Yeah. And I always was a big believer like any prime time game, you'd only show on. So you have to show up. You know, so Thanksgiving, that was one of those things like, man,
Starting point is 00:11:05 this is Thanksgiving. Then you know, like turkey lid, who's gonna get the turkey legs? Yeah. So, yeah, it's like,
Starting point is 00:11:11 it's a big deal, especially in the football community. It's like Thanksgiving football games. People look forward to that stuff. 1,000%. Now, Before we get it, in this game. What's what's the Will Fork household
Starting point is 00:11:22 look like during Thanksgiving? What's the lineup of food? Well, the craziest thing is I don't eat the way I used to eat anymore, but I still cook. But it's like I'm smoking, I'm smoking turkey. Smoking turkey. We haven't dressing. We have some mac and cheese. We have some mac and cheese. We have probably some red beans and rice. Dressing for you
Starting point is 00:11:38 white people, that's stuffing. You know, red beans and rice. Red beans and rice. We might have a roast. You never know. A rope roast? A rope roast? Yeah. Beef? Pork. Pork. Pork roast. And then you know you got all the desserts.
Starting point is 00:11:51 What's the thing? You got the apple pies, right? You got the sweet potato pies. You got to go. And you got cakes. So let's rock and like, let's rock and roll. What's the gravy situation? What do you mean with gravy?
Starting point is 00:12:02 Like red beans and rice. They got, they got his own juices. So you put that juice on the turkey gift? Yeah, man, look here. I told you, I'm smoking my turkey. So it's going to be a little. So yeah, the red bean and rice, baby. We don't eat no gravy.
Starting point is 00:12:12 Okay. I see. Uh-huh. Ha, ha. I like this. I like this. I've been to the house. man.
Starting point is 00:12:17 Yes. I had it before. Damn good. What's Lyman Thanksgiving like? Oh, man. You heard of offensive linemen Thanksgiving. Is there a defensive line at the house? Did you ever have defense, defensive guys at the house?
Starting point is 00:12:28 Yeah, it's probably sometimes. But the same thing. Like, back then I cooked a lot more. Yeah. Because I had, you know, had a thing on team to feed, you know. So everybody knew when it was time to eat or a holiday and we had to be in time, they know where to come. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:43 You know, so we would sit out there. We'd eat all day. and share good stories, you know, and just hang out. Like, we always find ways to, and it sounds like offense had they thing, Diva later there, right? But, you know, you did it. We cross over every once in a while. Yeah, every now and then, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:13:01 I went with Randy. Randy used to go to your house a bunch. And so I went with Randy once to Big V's. Yeah, like, it was over to everybody. Like, I care less. Like, you know, my teammates was my teammates. That sounds awesome. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Heck yeah. Should we run through this game real quick? Run through it. All right. We start this thing off in the second with a guy that was Johnny on the spot all night. Steve Gregory picks off San Chito. That sets up our first touchdown in the game, Brady to Welker. Up 7-0.
Starting point is 00:13:28 Sean Green fumbles. Who is it this time again? Johnny on the spot? Steve Gregory. Recovered the Balaugh the Sean Green fumble. Pardon me. Then a little swing pass. Varene goes 83.
Starting point is 00:13:39 Up 14-0. That brings us to the moment we're all here for a moment that still lives in infamy. nine minutes and 11 seconds left in the second quarter. Jets 31-yard line. Mark Sanchez goes back for what looks like a handoff, bit of a broken play, scrambles forward. He meets Brandon Moore's butt.
Starting point is 00:13:59 The ball is out. Who is it again to recover it? Steve Gregory, back to the house. 21-0. We got to dive into this moment, though. And the funny thing is we started this episode by talking about 2GAP. Yes.
Starting point is 00:14:11 And that right there is the definition of 2Gap. is when you blow them up so much that it runs the runner into the blocker. That's like, that's called recreating the line of scrimmage. Oh, yeah. Like, give us beat for beat. Well, it's fight pressure with pressure, right? So it's like, you know.
Starting point is 00:14:30 So pressure with pressure, meaning the offensive line guys pushing pressure at one direction on Big V, trying to probably wall them off in a certain direction. So Big V's got to put that pressure against that because he wants to attack that area. Right, right. You want to always fight pressure with pressure because that kind of tell you where the ball is supposed to go. And like I say, on that play, honestly, you know, Nick didn't come directly at me aggressive.
Starting point is 00:14:57 And Brandon didn't come to me directly, you know, aggressive. So I was stuck like, okay, who to attack? Remember, right? I have two gaps. So who would attack? I can't attack this guy and be out of gap. And I can't attack this guy because so in that millisecond, it's like I had to make a decision. So if you see, I was basically in the middle of that gap.
Starting point is 00:15:15 with both of them and trying to understand. And once Nick, I felt Nick kind of leave, I knew then, I had to fight back. And Brandon, it was on my shoulder. So that's why it's like I kind of trying to get my arms back and press. And once I press, that's why I vote before my happen, because I guess that gap closed fast enough for Sanchez. And he didn't realize how fast it was closing.
Starting point is 00:15:40 So that's what happened on that play, brother. Did you feel Mark Sanchez run into the offense alignment through you or no? No. I just felt once I press Brandon felt and then when I looked up, the ball was gone. I'm like, oh, fumble, you know, but I didn't know he ran into his butt and it fumble like that. You know, I had no idea. Can you imagine being that strong? Listen, listen, 300, and we'll say in conservatively, 45 pounds.
Starting point is 00:16:09 That's perfect. Other side, 300 probably. at most 315. So the pounds of pressure that these two men are literally trying to kill each other for. And Big V is so strong, another 215 pounds
Starting point is 00:16:25 hits that and he doesn't feel it. You gotta be fucking strong for that. And that's what, like, I just remember Big V would, I would see Big V come in the weight room and just put as many plates as you can see on the thing, do his like four sets, and then just dip out.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Like that's how strong that. You've got to be fucking strong to do that. That's a real man right there. That's a man's man's man, baby. And then after this play, we get what caps off 21 points in 52 seconds. Jules takes the ensuing kickoff to the house after he's blown up, catches it off his helmet, runs it back in there.
Starting point is 00:17:04 An RIP McKnight, man. That's sad. My guy's not here, but, you know, that Devin hits him. Godio. Good players got to be in the right area. That's right, baby. They were ready. You were ready.
Starting point is 00:17:18 Come on. Then you added on a 56-yard touchdown from Brady. What a bomb. 35-0-0-pats are up. Jets get on the board to end the half, 35-3. And then, speaking of big hits, Jules gets knocked out to start the third quarter.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Shut out of Ron Landry, sorry. Big-ass motherfucker. You know what? And that's the football gods right there. You know what I mean? Because sometimes when you're You start fueling yourself? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:42 I'm still a young ball player at two touchdowns, doing some shit. Feeling good. Feeling good. I'm going to take this reverse. I'm going to try to cut it back into all the pursuit. Reset button. Complete. I don't even remember the game.
Starting point is 00:17:55 You played really well. I played really well. Man, early Thanksgiving for you there, brother. And then we in this thing, 49, 19. Big V's out there getting the turkey leg. That's right. Everybody. How did it taste?
Starting point is 00:18:08 How does that turkey leg? Is it good? Is it cold? Yeah, it was cold. Yeah, it was cold, yeah. I always thought about that. It was cold, but I'm like, I don't want to be on national TV, just killing this whole thing. Let me just go on.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Just take a bite and go on by my business. Was it seasoned? Yeah, it was seasoned. Yeah, it was like. If it was warm, I would ate off. Yeah. Yeah, it was good. Yeah, it was good.
Starting point is 00:18:26 See, I'm a hot food guy, too. Yeah. I need my food burning hot. Some stuff, some stuff I can eat cold. Like, I'm not a big fan. Like, I don't care. Like, what can you eat cold? Like, I can eat chicken wings cold.
Starting point is 00:18:37 I can eat pizza cold. Yeah, fried chicken. I can eat spaghetti cold. I can eat pizza cold, but it tastes better if you do like... Yeah, it tastes... Of course it's going to taste better if you warm it up. But I'm just telling you what I eat cold. Yeah, I get it.
Starting point is 00:18:52 Hey, what's up, y'all? This is Questlove recently. I had the opportunity to sit down with Aesap Rocky ahead of his album release. Don't be dumb. He reflects on his journey from his Harlem roots to global icon status, discovering the hip-hop origin of his name. The ledge was on the TV. Raqim had the bucket hat can go during the apostles.
Starting point is 00:19:12 That's Raq Kim. That's who you named after. I just was like, damn, that fucking got swag. Rocky offers a window into not only a boundary-breaking artist, but as a man committed to fusing creative ideas, community, and remaining unapologetically himself. Have you ever gotten roasted for any of your outfits? For sure.
Starting point is 00:19:31 Some people don't be getting the vision. Look, they can roast me, they could cook meat, they could deep-fribe meat, they can saute, whatever they want. It's nobody with my fashion sense and my taste is impeccable I'm just like I impress myself a lot
Starting point is 00:19:47 It's an amazing conversation One you definitely don't want to miss So listen to the Questlove show On the Iheart radio app Apple Podcasts or wherever You get your podcast A new year doesn't mean erasing who you were It means honoring what you've survived
Starting point is 00:20:05 And choosing how you want to grow It means giving ourselves permission to feel what we've been holding and knowing that it's okay to ask for help. I'm Mike Dolorotcha, host of Sacred Lessons. This podcast is a space for men to talk openly about mental health, grief, relationships, and the patterns we inherit, but don't have to repeat. Here, we slow down. We listen.
Starting point is 00:20:31 We learn how vulnerability becomes strength and how healing happens in community, not in isolation. If you're ready to let go of what no longer serves you and step into the year with clarity, compassion, and purpose, sacred lessons is your companion on your healing journey. Hey there, this is Dr. Jesse Mills, director of the men's clinic at UCLA Health and host of the Mailroom podcast. Each January guys everywhere make the same resolutions.
Starting point is 00:21:10 Get stronger, work harder, fix, what's broken? But what if the real work isn't physical at all? To kick off the new year, I sat down with Dr. Steve Polter, a psychologist with over 30 years' experience, helping men unpack shame, anxiety, and emotional pain they were never taught to name. In a powerful two-part conversation, we discuss why men aren't emotionally bulletproof,
Starting point is 00:21:31 why shame hides in plain sight, and how real strength comes from listening, to yourself and to others. Guys who are toxic, they're immature, or they've got something they just haven't resolved. Once that gets resolved, then there comes empathy and some compassion. If you want this to be the year, you stop powering through pain and start understanding what's underneath. Listen to the mailroom on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your favorite shows. This season on Dear Chelsea with me, Chelsea Handler, we've got some incredible guests like Kamel Nangiani.
Starting point is 00:22:06 Let's start with your cat. How is she? She is not with us. Okay, great, great, great way to start. So this is a great beginning and hopefully you'll be able to, I don't know, maybe you will cry. Amanda Seifred. Life is so short. If you feel something like that, you have that fire in you for this experience.
Starting point is 00:22:26 It's not for a guy. It's for the experience of being in love and like it's bigger than a guy. Elizabeth Olson. I love swimming naked so much. And I know you love taking pictures of yourself naked. Yes. I love to be naked. I just want to be in my brown underwear all the time.
Starting point is 00:22:40 Ross Matthews. You know what kids always say to me? Are you a boy or girl? Oh, my God. That's so funny. I love it. So I'm always like, hi. I try to butcher it up for kids, you know, so they're not confused.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Yeah, but you're butching it up is basically like Doris Day. Right? No, I turn into Be Arthur. Listen to these episodes of Dear Chelsea on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Next up, Corey Dillon on how he's. he was traded to the New England Patriots. We know you as a Cincinnati Bengal.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Yeah. That's what this game is. But let's talk about your, when you went to New England. Oh, wow. Let's talk. How did that happen? We all, we know, but I want to hear from you. I want to hear from you.
Starting point is 00:23:22 Well, well, here was a situation. Um, I got hurt in 03. So I think I, you know, partially tore my, what was it, MCL, toward my groin. So I missed like eight games, man. I was on the show. And this is back in the day when running backs were getting like 800 carries a year. Yeah, so I was on the shelf.
Starting point is 00:23:45 And RIP to my guy, Rudy Johnson, man. He came in and stepped up and he played very well. So I was thinking like, hmm. And I'm getting up there. This is like my seventh season. And there was rumors of, I'm sitting at home. there was a rumor of the Bengals trying to trade me to Dallas. And I'm like, really?
Starting point is 00:24:13 I said, okay, okay. I said, no problem. I mean, I'm just saying in my mind, I'm like, yeah, just keep that same energy when I get all healed up. And I'm going to finish out the season and we're going to reopen this situation. And, yeah, I went in. I was speaking to Marvin Lewis and I was just like, you know what? it's been nice. I think my time is up here.
Starting point is 00:24:38 I like to move on and go somewhere. And it was just as simple as that. And I'm just looking at it from a standpoint of seven years, man, I was, we didn't win that much. And I'm, and I'm kind of, you know, looking in the mirror and looking at my career. Man, I probably got two to three more left.
Starting point is 00:25:02 Where do you want to go with this? what you want to do. So, and then as you know, like, I heard this. I heard this a lot. It was media play of the Patriot Way. I didn't know what the hell that was. They got a cold over there or is it something militant, some kind of, you know, I didn't. And the media was like, oh, yeah, Corey's not a Patriot Way guy.
Starting point is 00:25:27 That would never work. And I'm just thinking like, shit, maybe I don't want to go there either. I don't know. You know, I just like to play football. And Rodney Harrison, we had the same agent at that time. I give him big props. I think he went in there and spoke on my behalf. You know, and that's where the interests kicked up.
Starting point is 00:25:51 And you know what? I didn't think I was ever going to get traded. To be honest with you, I was just talking shit. Like, yeah. Yeah. You know, get me up out of here, whatever. And it picked up. It picked up.
Starting point is 00:26:04 And next thing I know, I'm actually. chilling at home and I see across the ticker like oh man Bangles trade Corey Judge That's how you find out Bottom ticker? I'm like
Starting point is 00:26:18 I'm sitting there with a piece of chicken like Wait wait a minute Like what? And then you know I get the call I get the call My age he's funny man He's funny and he's like yeah man It's going down
Starting point is 00:26:35 So you're a patriot now. And that's a whole, whole different experience, man. To be honest with you. No, who calls you first from the Patriots? Actually, let me kick back until how really like transpired. I actually went down and seen Scott and Bill first. I didn't, I'm just meeting them and just saying, you know, hello.
Starting point is 00:26:59 And they asked me a couple questions like, you know, you know Bill's straightforward. Yeah, Corey, I know all the shit going on. in Cincinnati. And I just, I told them straight up. I was just like, man, it's all predicated on me just wanting to win, win football games. And he asked me one more question. He said, you know what? You think you could play for us?
Starting point is 00:27:19 I was like, absolutely. We kind of, it was like a two to five minute meeting, got up, left. Never thought about it. Never thought about, you know, they actually trade for me. Kind of left it alone until it came across. crossed the ticket and was like, oh shit, it's going down. So, yeah, it was, it was simple. It was just a simple process of, I don't know if that was tampering.
Starting point is 00:27:44 Pat did it. I don't know. I don't know, but it was Scott Pioly and Bill. And, yeah, two to five minutes, man. We're out of there. Bill just needed to hear you say, I just want to win. That part of it. That's all he.
Starting point is 00:28:01 That part of it, man. And this 1,600 yards, 12 touchdowns, your first season. That's all he wanted to hear. Well, that is well, but he just wanted to see it. If he was about winning, then he believed that his environment, he would adapt to it. There you go. He would see Tom Brady. He would see Rodney and everybody else.
Starting point is 00:28:19 And then you know what? The whole thing about the Patriot way, you know what? I just kind of figured out is just doing your job, which I was pretty damn good. One of the best. Doing my job. been being quiet and, you know, I'm like, yeah, I can do this. Absolutely. So it worked, I think my personality kind of matched like what they, what, what they wanted,
Starting point is 00:28:50 you know, because all I wanted to do just go out there and play football and I didn't really care on how it looked. As long as you were winning, I'm good with it. So you're coming from Cincinnati. Yes. What's the first thing that comes through your head when you enter New England? because they just won the Super Bowl. They just won the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:29:08 Yeah, man. You get into New England, what do you, like, fuck? Pitching yourself? That part of it. I'm like, yo, like, that's what, man, I'm going to tell you, I'm going to be straight up, man. That's a lot of pressure, though, man. It was a lot of pressure because I'm thinking like, damn, they just won the Super Bowl. What in the hell did you need me for?
Starting point is 00:29:32 You know what I mean? Yeah. So that's a lot of pressure. And then it was the whole thing of me leaving Cincinnati going there. So that was a story itself. And then the Patriot way, is he going to fit in or not? But once I got there, man, you know, I don't played against these guys for a long time. I know some of these guys, man.
Starting point is 00:29:53 We're cool. So the thing I loved about it is like from an organization and players perspective, of they welcome me. You know, it was cool. They made me feel at home. And that kind of took some of the pressure off and some of the stuff I was thinking. And then when it comes down to it, man,
Starting point is 00:30:14 to me it was like, man, all I got to do show up and play ball. And that was the only focus on my mind. And if I do that, man, everything's going to work itself out. So, and that's basically what happened in 2004. I just showed up and play ball. What was the first encounter
Starting point is 00:30:31 with Bill like oh man i you know what after you guys signed hey i kind of got the feeling like bill is not the person to be fucked with me i'm dead serious he had this fear factor with the players of like man he is not playing no game so if you ever said in some of them them team meeting rooms with him he is funny is I don't know. I mean, got a funny sense of humor. But he'll tell you like,
Starting point is 00:31:09 hey, man, you don't want to do it my way. I will walk you to the door myself. Yeah. And he's serious. So I took that man very, very serious. And I was like, man,
Starting point is 00:31:20 I do not want to do anything to get on this man bad side. So, yeah, it was a self-checker for me. Like, man, I'm always on top of my game because he will call you out.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Oh, yeah. How was the O line? Like, how was light? Was light like just the funniest human being in the world? Oh, my God. He was, man, always, always pulling some kind of joke or talking shit or something along that line. I mean, he kind of lightened up the, you know, the room.
Starting point is 00:31:50 And, oh, man, it was him and Drew Zie and the rest of the guys, man. It was just funny. Yeah. I think we had a real, that offense was real, real fun. I mean, even though, like, we knew the assignment and at times, things are super serious, and we're all about the execution. But, you know, we had some funny guys on that old where things, I mean, even into, like, situations out there on the field where made things kind of like, and we was like, oh, man,
Starting point is 00:32:21 we got this, you know, so Matt Light is one of those guys. He was always, coach, hey, coach was always on him. like Matt, shut the fuck. He was like, be quiet. He's always cracking some kind of joke. So it was good, man. That whole team, man, that 014. Young Brady-ish.
Starting point is 00:32:45 Kingsbury was in there? King Brady then. Man, I tell you one thing, man. This is when I got there, man. I love the guy because you know what? I'm just getting there. And we'd be in some pressure situations out there. this guy did not flinch one bit.
Starting point is 00:33:02 You ain't never seen that. I have never seen that. And you can identify with this. Like when that guy calls your number in that huddle, man, you run through 10 brick walls for this guy. I mean, there's a situation. He was like, hey, Rock, he used to call me Rock. He's like, Rock, we need this first down to seal this gang.
Starting point is 00:33:24 We're giving it to you like three times in a row if we have to. And I'm like, bad, I got this. You know what I mean? And bro, sure enough, like, man, it was just a little extra pep in my step. Yeah. He called me out like, yeah, we need this. Three times in a row.
Starting point is 00:33:43 Let's get the first and seal the game. So hell of competitor. I just loved his mental aspect about the game. He first went in, first went out, had the whole locker room respect. Good dude, man. Good dude. If he was here,
Starting point is 00:34:02 he'd be hanging out, talking shit too. Yeah. That's the type of person. Maybe one day. Maybe one day. Maybe one day. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:09 Hey, you like the president now. It's hard to catch up with this guy. Maybe one day. Hey, man, can I get a, hey, man, can you, can you friend me on IG?
Starting point is 00:34:17 Something, man. Hey, we got a better luck to get in the Pope in here for him. Man. You're a guy. He's a football guy. Hey, man. Who is the team asshole?
Starting point is 00:34:29 Oh, my God. But that we all loved. Let me see. Oh, my God. There's some guys out there. There's the Braebles. There's the. You hit it.
Starting point is 00:34:45 First try. Oh, man, Braves is something different, man. Always going against the grain. Like, no, this is not. Why are we doing this? you know? Yeah. So,
Starting point is 00:34:58 and him and him and Bill was always into it about something. Braves is a good dude, oh, man. Good. Yeah, that's, Braves, man. Hell of a player, man. Smart, smart, smart, smart, smart player.
Starting point is 00:35:13 And, and, you know, this is, they preach this. This is what Bill wants. Tough, smart football players. Braves is one of those people. Oh, yeah. How do you think he's going to, do you know he's going to be a head coach?
Starting point is 00:35:25 Did you know he's going to be? I never, I never thought about that. I'm like, I used to run his ass over in practice. Now he's the headcoat someone. Look at this guy, man. But no, man, it fits him. Yeah. It fits him, man.
Starting point is 00:35:42 He was one of those brilliant minds out there. Have you watched the Pats at all? Yeah, I catch him. You can't, can't win when it's turn it over five turnovers. You can't do that. Jeez. You can't win like that. So you were a bona fide star.
Starting point is 00:35:55 when you got up brought into New England and they were just coming off of a Super Bowl. Was there any issues with jelling into the roster? You know what? I had, this is my brother too, man. Kevin Falk, bro. Hey, he's a legend. Man, this guy,
Starting point is 00:36:12 his locker was right next to mine. And he used to say, man, bro, you're here for a reason. You know what I mean? That made me feel comfortable. You know, like, you're here for a reason. You know what I mean? And there are some things,
Starting point is 00:36:25 I couldn't do. Kay Falk was a monster. He was the Swiss Army knife. He could do it all. Like, my big ass ain't going out there running no routes like Kevin Falk. Yeah. Now ain't going to work.
Starting point is 00:36:38 So I think me and him just talking and him letting me know like, bro, do your thing. You know, this is a team. Nobody's bigger than another guy. And I really felt that coming in that building like, man, we're going to go out here.
Starting point is 00:36:57 And I never, I never was a stat guy anyway. I never really sat back and like, oh, I need 100 yards this game. I just go out there and play, man. You know what I mean? And whatever happens at the end of the game, that's what it is. But that guy was like, yeah, man, you're here for a reason. Let's go out there and get it. And we compliment each other like good.
Starting point is 00:37:20 Yeah. And it was one hell of a running back as well. He was. I played with him. Yeah. He was older when I got there. Yeah. But he taught me how to catch puns.
Starting point is 00:37:31 He was my punk guy because he was the hands guy. And then on top of that, like, he shared everything. Me and him chopped it up. We talked. Yeah. You know what I mean? Play. Great teammate.
Starting point is 00:37:42 Great, great teammate. He filled me in on things I needed to know. Yeah. So, yeah, that's my bro, man. Shout out, K-Fa-Fol. Now, take us through. when you win a Super Bowl one year in. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:37:56 It's like it worked. Yes. Miscopreet. Patriot what? What? Patriot way, yeah. Yeah. And it was,
Starting point is 00:38:09 listen, I've been chasing that part of football since I was pop warning, man. I always get to the big games. Maybe take a L. Never won one. High school. You know, never getting to the state championship. you know so i've been that's been hunting me for the longest of actually getting into a championship
Starting point is 00:38:30 game and actually winning one i think i think that that super bowl just to me like kind of satisfied that that child football player in me and was like yeah we finally got it heck yeah i mean nothing like it nothing like it there is nothing like winning a chip man i you know what I was like a deer in headlights, man. You sit there and you see that ball being kicked off and all those flashes going off at the same time. You can get overwhelmed. I was like, oh, shit, where am I?
Starting point is 00:39:04 Until I got hit. And then I came back to reality. It was like, yeah, man, we're in a football game. And the Eagles at the time was pretty, they were pretty stout, man. That was a very good team we played. And ended up edging them out by three. So good game. T.O. came out with a broken leg
Starting point is 00:39:22 and got 1.30 on him or so. And we're still bawling. Still balling. I was like, he's not human. Who is this guy? But it's crazy because you were like the first star brought in to the Patriot Way. Yeah, yeah. Do you think that it eventually
Starting point is 00:39:39 yes, it did. It got them to get Randy Moss. Yes. Yeah. So, hey, I never, it was never spoken, you know. And I didn't really, I didn't really think about that until well after I was done. But I truly believe maybe I'm wrong. Bill or call me or shoot me a text if I'm off, if I'm offbeat with this.
Starting point is 00:40:02 But I think the way I conducted myself there kind of opened up the doors for the Randy Mosses and other guys. I do too, for sure. And Bill used to reference you all the time in a great way. I love Bill, man. Bill is, I had a great respect for him, man, because, you know what? I think, I understood him. I got him. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:40:26 Like, either you could do it or you can't. And he's, you know, let me know. Yeah. I think I'm kind of like that in my life too. Like, can you do it or not? So I understood, I understood them. And then also I understood the assignment. Like, I get you.
Starting point is 00:40:45 I'm not, I'm here, I'm here just personally. like, I'm going to give you all I got. You know, I'm going to go out there and play my ass off. Don't worry about that part for me. And I think that just kind of ties into everything he preaches and what he was about. And we had a, we had a real good, good relationship. Yeah. That's good to hear that. Hey, what's up, y'all? This is Questlove recently. I had the opportunity to sit down with Aesap Rocky ahead of his album release. Don't be dumb. He reflects. on his journey from his Harlem roots
Starting point is 00:41:20 to global icon status, discovering the hip-hop origin of his name. The ledge was on the TV. Raq Kim had the bucket hat, Cane Gold join on. My pops was like, that's Raqim. That's who you named after.
Starting point is 00:41:33 I just was like, damn, that fucking got swag. Rocky offers a window into not only a boundary-breaking artist, but as a man committed to fusing creative ideas, community, and remaining unapologetically himself. Have you ever gotten roasted for any of your outfits? For sure. Some people don't be getting a vision.
Starting point is 00:41:51 Look, they can roast me, they could cook me, they could deep fried meat, they can saute, whatever they want. There's nobody who can be with my fashion sense and my taste is impeccable. I'm just like, I impress myself a lot. It's an amazing conversation. One, you definitely don't want to miss. So listen to the Questlove show on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Every January, we're encouraging. to start over. But what if this year is about slowing down and learning how to understand
Starting point is 00:42:26 ourselves more deeply? What if this year is about giving ourselves permission to feel what we've been holding and knowing that it's okay to ask for help? I'm Mike Delarocha, host of Sacred Lessons. This is a podcast for men navigating stress, emotional health, fatherhood, identity, and the unspoken pressures were taught to carry alone. We talk honestly. about mental health, about healing generational wounds, and about learning how to show up with more presence and care. If you want a healthier relationship with yourself and the people you love, then Sacred Lessons is the podcast for you.

Jesse Mills, Director of the Men's Clinic at UCLA Health and host of the Mailroom podcast. Each January guys everywhere make the same resolutions. Get stronger, work harder, fix, what's broken? But what if the real work isn't physical at all?
Starting point is 00:43:34 To kick off the new year, I sat down with Dr. Steve Polter, a psychologist with over 30 years' experience, helping men unpack shame, anxiety, and emotional pain they were never taught to name. In a powerful two-part conversation, we discuss why men aren't emotionally bulletproof, why shame hides in plain sight and how real strength comes from listening to yourself and to others. Guys who are toxic, they're immature, or they've got something they just haven't resolved.
Starting point is 00:44:00 Once that gets resolved, then there comes empathy as in compassion. If you want this to be the year, you stop powering through pain and start understanding what's underneath, listen to the mailroom on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your favorite shows. This season on Dear Chelsea with me,
Starting point is 00:44:21 See, Handler, we've got some incredible guests like Kumail Nanjiani. Let's start with your cat. How is she? She is not with us in. Okay, great, great, great way to start. So this is a great beginning and hopefully you'll be able to, I don't know, maybe you will cry. Amanda Seifred. Life is so short.
Starting point is 00:44:40 If you feel something like that, you have that fire in you for this experience, it's not for a guy. It's for the experience of being in love and like it's bigger than a guy. Elizabeth Olson. I love swimming naked so much. And I know you love taking pictures of yourself naked. I love to be naked. I just want to be in my brown underwear all the time. Ross Matthews.
Starting point is 00:45:00 You know what kids always say to me? Are you a boy or girl? Oh my God. That's so funny. I love it. So I'm always like, hi. I try to butcher it up for kids, you know, so they're not confused. Yeah, but you're butching it up is basically like Doris Day.
Starting point is 00:45:13 Right? No, I turn into Be Arthur. Listen to these episodes of Dear Chelsea on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Next, the play that keeps Julian up at night. Just a quick question for you. Is there a play that keeps you up at night that maybe has lost a game for, you know, the Patriots?
Starting point is 00:45:35 And it still bugs you to this day? I have like three. Two from the Patriots, one from high school. One from the Patriots was against Baltimore, I think, in 2019. Humphreys, I hit a play, or it was 2018 or 2019. I hit a play and then Humphreys, Tom threw me a quick ball, and I, like, bobbled it. I was trying to keep up, and he stripped me and he housed it.
Starting point is 00:46:05 Housed it. Went and freaking housed it. And they took momentum and won that game in Baltimore. That keeps me up. That's when Humphreys was still young. He was like, he was a feisty player, man. He was brand new. I had a lot of respect for him.
Starting point is 00:46:21 And then another one was later in my career. And there's more. Like, actually, I'll go an early one in my career. They're against the Giants. In 2011, I had a punt and I got fumbled. And, like, it was bad. We were, we lost that game in Foxborough. Who is the tight end?
Starting point is 00:46:46 Jake. Bailey? No, the punter. Jake, something. He was on the Giants and then he came to our team the next year. Oh, let me look this one up. And he's a friend of mine, actually, so I should know that. But, you know, I got hitting a head a lot. Next up, Jules and Carissa Thompson tell their favorite Randy Moss stories.
Starting point is 00:47:02 Ever since the Randy Moss story. Oh, my God. So good. I love that. I win. With his mom? Yes. Oh, my God. I love that. So, you know, prior to you coming, I worked with Randy Moss for the first couple years of the kickoff show. And it was before I would do game breaks. so I didn't have to stay all day. So I would leave right after our show.
Starting point is 00:47:21 And me and him and Champ Bailey, we would always go to Rosco's. And I was like, you know, like, I'm with my big brother. So I was okay. Like I would never like go wander around by myself. And just like I was wearing like my full dress, like full makeup. They're being like, what's this chick doing in here? Right.
Starting point is 00:47:39 And they would always protect me. And they were always so great. And that's like one of the many things I love about working at Fox. And you know this now. for just even your small amount of time that you've been there. Like it's a family. Definitely a family. They're the best.
Starting point is 00:47:53 And like Randy, the stories, I could just listen to Randy Moss stories all day. Randy, he's funny. And it's his accent. Yeah. His accent's so funny. I mean, I was just doing a, I went to, I went back to Boston. I went to this academy. So what is it, Thayer?
Starting point is 00:48:09 Thayer. Thayer. We went to Thayer. And I spoke in front of the whole school, you know, the junior high and the high. at high school. The junior high and the high. You know, I went to Kent State. Come on. I'm going to start saying that. Forget the school part. You know what I'm talking about. The junior high and the high. The junior high and after you're taking pictures and all these like little six graders, they're all over here like, Edel Nut, Edel Nut, Edel. That's hysterical. I'm sitting like, you guys should not be listening to my podcast. There's too many. Where are your parents? I need to talk to them. They're listening to New Heights. Come on. It's for all ages. That's not true. We're listening to all the podcasts. I know. And you've done a great job. Now, Brandon Bolden tells the insane story of the Patriots flight home from the White House. Obama was the president. We went to the White House.
Starting point is 00:48:55 You remember the plane broke? Yeah. And you remember what we ended up? The airport bar? You know how we got there? No. Me, Ryan, and Steve and Steve Belichick. Remember they bought them sandwiches in there?
Starting point is 00:49:14 Which one? Those. Those the fucking triangle cut wrapped in foil Like they toasted the bread And Steve Belichick was like Like I'm not eating this shit And he threw it and the motherfucker got stuck in the wall And so we looked at each other
Starting point is 00:49:29 It was like man fuck it We just go walk around go to the bar We bang a corner, it's a bar And there's not a soul in there It's one girl working behind the bar So we just like I'm gonna order food I'm gonna order a drink I'm just hang out
Starting point is 00:49:42 Because why explain what were we doing We were, we just met the president. We were going, we were going back to New England. Now, mind you, when we got there, do you remember that landing? Bad landing. Bad, terrible landing. It was so bad, like I tried to lay down. And it was at one point, I was above everybody's seat.
Starting point is 00:50:04 And I was laying flat. Wow. So we landed. It was like, oh, man, that was crazy. It was a windy day? I don't think it was. That's the crazy part. Wait, no, it wasn't a windy day.
Starting point is 00:50:14 That's when we came back and it was like, hey, y'all need to go in this room because we got to find you another plane or we have to fix this plane. So I was like, okay, the plane was fucked up. That's why the landing was bad. Cool. It's me. Was Chung there? Yeah. Is that when Chung got terrified and flying?
Starting point is 00:50:33 Yes. That's great. So you don't remember this at all? Because I wasn't at, I was chilling doing some other shit stuff. Yeah, you came later. Yeah. You came. By time you got there, half the team was at the.
Starting point is 00:50:44 bar. This is after Bill told us we wasn't supposed to go anywhere. But like I said, the food was terrible. And he had no choice but to let us go. I had to go. So we're eating and as we're eating here come the assistant defensive coaches. So then phone come out, then here come all the
Starting point is 00:51:02 running backs. Then here come the receivers. Here's a D-line. Now here comes Maddie P in that whole crew. Here comes Joe Judge. Bro. Do you and it's so fun. And it's so because I don't think nobody knows the tab we ran up. I know. Because nobody paid for shit.
Starting point is 00:51:20 Well, we end up paying at the end. But like I said, I had food and I had my drinks going. And we were all together. So then I think it was either Maddie P or, what was the D-Line coach? Oh. D.C. for the Raiders? Not D. Nah.
Starting point is 00:51:38 It wasn't Pat. Pat. It wasn't Pat. He was. Brandon Daly? Daly. Daily was like, no, no, no, fuck that. Put everybody on one ticket.
Starting point is 00:51:49 And like I said, it was one girl. Now, the cool thing about this one girl, when they ran out of liquor, she didn't bathe eyes. She didn't say anything. All she said was, I got to run down to the duty-free shop, and I'm going to grab some and I'll come back. Well, they was like, well, grab a bunch. So she came back with like two boxes of liquor.
Starting point is 00:52:10 So boom, she puts that up. We ran through both boxes. So now, oh, y'all playing ready, y'all can head to the gate and this, this, this, and the third. It was like, I'm standing there because I just want to pay for what I had and I can go. Man, that girl pulled that receipt out by this long, and I saw four zeros. I said, who about to pay for all this? Maddie said, I got it. And Dale was like, nah, I got it.
Starting point is 00:52:40 So that whole day was defensive coach staff paid for that. Good. Good. And so we get on the plane, and then that's when all that fun that we just had and all that camaraderie, that's when that shit just went downhill. Because now this coach is throwing up. This person's passing out. We can't find this guy.
Starting point is 00:53:02 And it was just a shit show. But that was by far the best plane trip we've ever taken. Oh, my God. Thanks for listening. Remember to tune in every Tuesday for a. brand new episode and every Sunday for another games with names highlight. Hello, hello, all my people,
Starting point is 00:53:28 what's up? It's Questlove. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with the one and only ASAP Rocky. He reflects on his journey from Harlem Roots to global icon status and discovering the hip-hop origin of his name. The ledge was on the TV. Rakim had the
Starting point is 00:53:44 bucket hat can go join on. My post is like, that's Raqin. That's who you named after. I just damn, that's fucking.
