How are we doing?
We live?
Barely.
Oh my gosh, dude.
Not a...
Not a sick of the last one, but, uh...
You know that even when you had that, like, an annoying,
kind of slight headache and stuff he knows,
but, uh, can't be a bitch, dude.
Can't be a bitch.
Um, good morning, good afternoon, good evening.
Welcome back to the podcast.
Uh, doesn't seem like it was that long ago when we did a lot solo.
But, yeah, all the stuff we've been talking about.
It's out there.
It's finally out there.
We've got two new songs.
We've got Graceless and Make Yourself personally.
Thank you for checking out the songs.
They seem to be doing well on YouTube.
And joke, but not a joke.
Climbing the charts on our Spotify,
I don't think we had a graceless set number two.
And we haven't done that.
ever so kind of cool to be 40 years old and able to put a cool track that people are jamming so this record comes out November 20th
to be honest what number record is this seven I don't is this seven I don't was this seven
I forgot.
Wow.
So there's this one
and we have,
you know what?
I'm gonna call it right now.
We have one more
bangor in us.
We have one more
because after the next one,
they'll probably be money
and older.
And it's just reality.
You know,
father of time always wins.
We have one more bangor in us.
So enjoy this one.
Enjoy the next one.
And then we're going to go downhill.
Um,
just like everyone you know it's hard to write a fucking banger in your late 40s you know
got money you got your own house um but yeah again just thank you for jamming the songs
it was a nice little uh what do you say like uh some kind of recharge some kind of um
yeah just uh refilling the refilling the soul so um yeah i came
back right in a nick of time.
And also thank you for watching the
Suicide Silence podcast. That's back as well
every two weeks.
That came back swinging.
You seem to be from what YouTube tells me.
You seem to be joining at as well.
So always honored to be a part of your week.
So that's on Thursdays.
So yeah, I came back right in like
again earlier than I wanted to.
Um, I was like, I think it was like seven months long little fucking, it's not even, not even, but vacation. I was still doing this thing. And, uh, came back right in a naked time. There was already, um, a studio time booked. Um, which I wasn't happy about, but that's in the past. And, uh, yeah, I had some, uh, ideas. I had some ideas. I had some ideas.
And so Graceless was before Make Yourself.
Make yourself was, I think we put it out there,
but it's like the, it was the last song we wrote for the record.
We liked to call those rush deliveries on Black Crown.
That's OCD.
Don't Tendombleed.
That's disengage.
Did the cleansing have a rush delivery?
I don't think so.
how much I did it?
Hmm.
I don't remember.
I don't remember that out of rush to leave.
It might have, but it's just not coming to me.
It might be the,
uh,
might be the yogurt land from, uh,
last night.
That's infected my memory.
But, uh,
yeah,
so graceless was like this, um,
let's just freaking hop into it, dude.
Graceless was,
um,
a concept more than like,
of riff
It was just like
I forgot what particular guest it was
But we just did a podcast here
And then like I was just inspired
And I was just like man
It'll be so fucking cool to like
Just have a song that opens up
It's like shun
Shorn
Shorn
Shon Jahn
It's like a blast
Or some kind of weird chaos
It's chaos
And that was like
Now it's more like
I guess you could say a rip
I guess we'll kind of find out
A real time once I play it
But I kind of want to show you something.
I'm not sure this is the original one because I have an older one.
But this is, I have my voice recordings here or voice memos or whatever you want to call it.
But I just realized the date, December 25th, this is Christmas.
So Christmas, I'm chugging.
I've been in this room on Christmas, sleeping on the floor.
Christmas Eve.
So it doesn't surprise me.
Holy Shee, this is Christmas.
December 25th,
2005.
This is going to sound terrible,
but this is,
let's see if you guys could hear this.
I was probably in bed.
Yeah.
I might have been somewhere quiet
and it hit me.
So like, if you have an idea,
he just got to like kick it out.
I was just like,
John,
Vajon,
just like super prime.
just reptilian shit.
And I think I have
this is an other one.
So this is
I think I'm hanging out with the guys at this point.
This is March 16th,
2012,
let's see what this is.
I'm kind of playing with the pedal too.
So it's just kind of messing with like the
super,
I mean, that's distortion, right?
I mean, I don't, it's just over the top, fuzz.
And, yeah, I mean, I would, I guess, thinking about it now, I will call it, you know, I think it's, I mean, I think it's a riff.
I mean, I've learned from this thing that people call riffs different things.
I think if you're playing something, I think, I think it's a riff.
But, yeah, I remember just like fucking around with this.
disgusting tone just like over the top and uh and it's all it's oh again it's always the hardest
thing but how do you make it stupid excuse me how do you like how do you make it as simple as
possible and just get the fucking emotion across um and then i started messing around and made it
as simple as possible so here's a uh here's a uh
example. Yeah, so just kind of mess around with the chugs. Originally, like, kind of like the pattern
evolved from bludgeoned. It was like, it was too much like bludgeon. So it was like, how do we make it more
simple? Like, it's like too bludgeoning. So we kind of took out a couple of chugs and made
even more stupid and simple. Just kind of let like the tone, um, you know, I like to, um,
use like the tone as a tool to actually,
create the riff.
And that's like a pretty good example with like letting let the pedal do like the work.
Um,
to create the sound.
And,
uh,
yeah,
and then just fucking just stay here.
Stay here.
I think Mark came up with the next pattern.
And then it just,
uh,
in suicide sounds fashion,
just kept it.
Which I'm going to go into the subject later because it is actually a,
a question I got.
Excuse me.
Um,
about song.
writing but yeah okay it's like kind of let the song kind of dictate where where your hand
goes and that's this is kind of like a perfect example i'll show you it's like oh then now wait it's the
the fucking so literally like like the hand is staying here because that's what the song wants
i mean my my brain wants it to go somewhere else but just let the fucking riff kind of i can't find the
word just kind of let it just
let the heart just keep your hand where
it should
and then I just let I mean just
and then you make it in suezza sounds fashion
let the fucking pause just stop the riff
and the pause lets it breathe like
I mean I don't know
you can't really get more
I mean can't really get more primal than that
so yeah I hope uh and also
something
that we fought for
is we've been telling Ernie our drummer
for like a fucking over a year, maybe even longer
like
I want like
give me a gravity
give me a gravity blast and he hates him
but man like some
the song calls for it is fucking
how about the two extremes like a stupid chug
with like a crazy drum over here
like that like kind of dimension
is like
kept saying it
you're gonna do gravity here
you're gonna do gravity here
you're gonna do gravity he wouldn't do it
and finally were at the studio
the drums and so where's
so where's the gravity
and uh it fucking fit
dude yeah um again
you know
seems like
um
seems like you're all
digging a song
uh Austin
Coopin Hunter Young
is fucking killed it as far as like the production side
and uh
just embodying
the chug maxing
embodying like the chug maxing life
we need t-shirts but uh
i don't know if you could
perfect chug-maxing
better than that
it's just
that's that's fucking
chug maxing and uh
see that that shit was written
less than a fucking
less than day
those are kind of like
those are
those tend to be the best one
And then
Years ago
When Alpha Wolf dropped that
Fucking
I have right here
The noise pedal
On the Tong was nice enough
And the guys sent me one
And I've been jamming that thing
Constantly
So this kind of like
Reminds me of smoke but I don't need
Which I actually brought him here
I'll show you guys the pedals in a minute
Oh shit
Like
This is like four pedals
and a one where i need like all these pedals to do like this one sound you know it was cool just press like
one button and like there it is it's like this um probably sounds stupid to say but i say a lot of stupid
shit so it's fine honest adds like this it like breeds like i like i like wami parts that breed
it's like this it's not like a flat sound it's just kind of like and that's what i like about
the noise pedal that uh the whammy by itself cannot do you need other
their pedals to kind of give it some life.
And then make your exit.
Again, it was just a fucking, it was a rush delivery.
And I have another voice memo for you is, uh, this was like the early stages of, uh,
because I knew we were going to write a song that day.
So that morning, you know, woke up in my room, got the coffee, hang out my cat outside,
went back, started riffing.
and went back on my line 6 spider and uh so this is may 14th
2006 so what it's probably sound terrible this is freestyle freestyle what do you
what I'm doing so that's kind of like to literally like that's literally like what
you're hearing is nothing's written it's what happens like what happened like what
what's going to happen when like you just plug in you're not thinking of them your hands start moving
and that kind of triplet and double fucking top string bend just kind of flew out and then uh
yeah brought it to and then actually no this is this came first and all right let's fucking
start jamming a riff dude let's just start jamming and uh it's crazy how you could play with a pedal dude
for so long and nothing comes out
and then the moment
you need to write something
fucking flies out and then
I remember being in the
in the rehearsal space
with the guys in this fucking riff
literally just fucking flew out dude it just
like this wasn't like a written riff
like just out of nowhere
I'll play for you guys
and then our urnion just came in
with this fucking blast beat
and well that's it
it's like this stupid riff just fucking flew out
And it's oh shit that kind of goes along with
Oh yeah
I was jamming that triplet top string riff
This morning that might go after
And uh
It was a weird timing
Like uh
Watch I'll show you
It was uh let's see
Like it wasn't like a
It wasn't like you hear it now
So we kept it that way because we couldn't make it more simple
Like it just wasn't hitting us
so we kept like this off-time verse kind of riff going and it wasn't until like hunter and austin helped us
just made it more simple like they made it like dun dun dun bam one two three when we had it like a more
like a musha-a-tig-type and again like just like graceless it's like um since i was a child
kind of keep the hand there and it's classic suicide sounds so it says all right
This is, and that shit just flew out of me.
Like, what, I didn't, I always say, like, I didn't, I didn't write that.
Like, something else fucking, it's so, it's easy.
Literally, I'm not moving.
It's just, it's just there.
Kind of like an unanswerer throwback.
Yeah, then we have like this, and Ernie had the idea.
of like a 20th century fox
breakdown and it's fucking
worked. It just
the fucking, I don't have the
right, the right pedal for it
but it was another like disgusting pedal
we had, me like the swollen pickle or something.
It's such a fucking disgusting riff
like the fucking
like we're bending on the
first fret.
My
gate can't handle the fucking
yeah, it was pretty fucking
And that's it.
And then the song ends, right?
So that's the first two singles that you hear.
Just want to give a little back story on them.
Kind of hearing like the birth of like the starts off a little line six spider riff.
Concept, the voice memos.
And oh yeah, real quick.
So the noise that you hear, I almost forgot like a.
Fucking idiot, dude.
I'm sorry.
That means I need more coffee.
So silence brought you by coffee.
So what you hear,
because I wanted to give it some,
some character and just,
you know, nice little suicide sounds,
no time of bleed throwback.
We use noise pedal,
but also, it's also a blend
with the old school pedal.
So these are the pedals
I use for no ton of bleed smoke.
It's that whammy effect
back in the day because noise didn't exist
I used this fucking
electronic
electrohormonics
electronic mistress
and it's a flanger
and chorus in one pedal
and I really liked, I still liked
the chorus a lot on this for some reason
excuse me, it's one of my favorite
choruses so it's why I got it
I heard Monkey used it and I don't
think he does. I think I's
I got the wrong pedal
so I got this on accident
but I don't know
I kept it I love the course
and yes as you can see it's all beat up
and shit
it's the exact pedal
so used the chorus
was obviously the fucking whammy
the digite whammy
classic two ock is up
um
I mean
a lot of people
a lot of people know
you know this pedal
and a little bit
same delay
electric harmonics
number one echo digital delay
um
it looks like very like minimal
it's like kind of
it's just there it's like kind of a
kind of like a flavor i guess you could say
and this is a secret too
um
this
digitech diggy verb
it's obviously a reverb pedal
um
this thing has a glitch in it
because it has six different settings
that might that might be better
and setting number six is a reverse effect and I remember what was when I was fucking around with the
also these are also the same pedals I use for lifted to get the the octave lower effect actually the complete opposite of what I'm talking about now
um so with with this one when you put it on reverse and the level all the way up there's like a glitch that happened
that's a really cool thing about pedals
where like the thing that fucks up is actually
what you want you know and
yeah that's how
that's how smoke was written
um
these four pedals going
and like it created like this swell
this fucked up
high pitch swell that I loved
like
so uh
I think also
then not all digy verbs do that
I think it's only with the older ones
I think you buy a brand
annual one it doesn't do that
so it is kind of one of those snobby
pedals pedal tricks
you got to get like the right era of it
so the glitch of this
really
fucking cool it has so much shit has a room
plate hall church
gated and spring
that's basically kind of
seven petals and one I mean
that's a lot
so yeah I brought back the pedals
did the same
the same
trick and then we just stacked them
and that's what you hear
so it's extra
extra fucked up for you
so again yeah
thank you for jamming nose tunes
I want to give you guys a little
little backstory

See you there.
I want to see Seven Dust and Riverside
with my lady.
shout out to Kevin and the team the seven dust team
it was at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium
and next door is the mission inn which is where Mitch got married
it's a really historic hotel
they don't let metalheads in there when there's a show next door
but I think because I was with a hot chick they kind of let me in
And there's a really cool bar in there.
It's kind of hidden.
So me and my lady went in there.
It was empty.
It was so nice.
And this is why I'm bringing it up.
Yeah, I sat down.
We got a non-alcoholic hyniken.
And I remember just like, I was sitting there just looking at it.
I'm like, wow.
If this was six months ago, I'll literally be two shots deep.
and the IPA
getting ready for
salmon dust
one of my
top free favorite bands
in the hometown
I'm getting hammered
I remember
just sitting there like
wow how times have changed
and just remember
I look just looking at this fucking beer
like wow
like
you know
I think we talked about it
on like the last one
you know
kind of like
remembering how far you've come
you know
and I was like wow
so
I'm a lady, I'm like, wow, this was six months ago, I'll be hammered right now.
You know, I'll do the embarrassing, hey, can you drive me home?
I drove us here, can you join me home?
I'm about to see Seven Dust.
And I need to consume a large amount of alcohol.
But I remember, yeah, feeling pretty proud.
Like, you ever have that shit?
Like, just kind of look back and like, wow, I'm a fucking different person.
But the show is insane.
It was fucking awesome.
And, uh, seven dust is kill.
as always.
They're having a like a TikTok thing and
seeing that people sing to dial
was like pretty fucking cool.
And I want to give
what other show did I go to?
I saw Danzig at the
at the Honda Center.
I just want to give him a quick shout-up
because dancing was sick.
And I think that's what we all want to see, right?
When we see like a nostalgic
actor, a big, man or a small man,
it doesn't really matter.
We just want to see if they see
if they still have it
and came out,
just like head banging
and like moving around.
I was like,
this is,
this is cool.
This is what,
if you're a fan,
this is what you want to see.
It was awesome.
I just want to give them a quick shout out.
I felt,
um,
I felt inspired when I saw him up there.
I was just,
this is what you want to see.
You want to see like
dressing a certain way
that built the big belt buckle,
the fucking way he holds the mic.
I was that,
that's kind of fine too.
Then,
uh,
Costa Mesa.
I saw a weed eater
I believe the venues called
The Wayfair
It's more like a bar
So I got super doomed
That's also a hint of who's coming up
On the pod
So shout out to wheat eater
And taking care of me
It was a fucking sick out show
I'm sure you've all seen
Me get choked out by my
Matt
Hafe
Everyone gets the name wrong
That's why we made a fucking clip out of it.
Everyone says his name wrong.
Matt Heafy.
Everyone says Matt Heafy, but my brain is programmed to say
Matt Heafy.
But, uh, yeah, so I got choked out by him.
That was cool.
And, uh, yeah, I've been, uh, I've been, uh, boxing the past two months.
Feeling pretty good.
Um, my leg work is pretty fucking up there.
I'm ready to kick some ass.
And then once that's more solid
I'm going straight up like with
Matt really solidified like
I got I got the bug
I want to learn more
I want to learn a
JGIS you for sure
just so you're all aware what you saw
that was my second time ever in my life
doing anything like that
about six months prior
I was on the mat
someone teaching me like basics
and that was like I didn't know
like nothing
this
one hour
just not know what I'm doing
so this what you see is like I don't know what I'm doing
and what better place to do it than on
the internet for everyone to see
but
I just want to say real quick also
Matt's a great teacher
they're very limited time
to explain to someone
like myself that knows nothing
and to guide me through it
on camera was actually pretty impressive on his part
because that could have been pretty bad
but he's a very good teacher
um
so yeah what you see is my second time rolling ever
and uh well yeah what better place than
than YouTube
if I look like a fool I fucking don't
don't really care but uh
okay this is my last update
and then we'll get into some questions
but uh
okay
My 90 day goal is a fucking disaster.
I'm eating like shit, which is hints as why I'm kind of stuffy right now.
But that happens, right?
Like your life, what, you ever look back at your day?
Like, what happened to my day?
It's gone.
What the fuck happened to the day?
It's just, I don't know.
I don't know.
Your day just disappears.
Some of you have families, have kids, so it's even harder for you guys.
We work full time.
and your day just disappears, you're overwhelmed.
And,
uh,
the best,
the best way to comfort that is food.
I get it.
I get it.
Man,
when the day is over,
you're like,
I'm just gonna eat like shit.
I don't care.
So I'm gonna put that goal and hold.
Um,
you're,
I'm gonna learn a real time how to fix it and then I'll share that with,
with all you,
but there's too much shit going on in life.
And,
uh,
yeah,
I'm learning in real time.
And to wrap this up
This happened this week to me
I just want to share it real quick
It's just
Okay so
You ever look in the mirror
And like what the fuck happened
You ever do that
I looked in the mirror
I was like I looked at my chin
Here in a bathroom
For some reason that the bathroom here
That the mirror is very clear
I don't know what it like
It accentuates all your flaws
I don't know what it is
And I was like
What the fuck happened to my chin
like the gray hairs have doubled and I don't remember that from the day before
I was like oh my guys it's happening quick it's happening quick um is that ever ever happen
to you or am I am I tripping but uh that was that was a nice reality check and I'm definitely
not going to be one of those guys that gets the just for men if I turn gray you're all
you're all going to see it and I'm just going to fucking accept it
But man, let's look at my dude
This shit fucking doubled
It doubled
Oh god
I don't know
I don't know what's going on anymore
I don't know
It's kind of tripping me out
I guess in real time
But uh
And also last update is
We're wrapping up our website
You can't really see it right now
But uh behind the scenes
There's a whole website being built
Uh it's very Theovon inspired
Uh, it's going to be
A place where
You can submit
questions audio video calling leave voicemails to answer here in the pod so that's being built
on kind of update today it might actually be done so that's going to come in very soon where
people can kind of a little hub where people can throw in some some voicemails so uh that's kind of cool
so keep out for that and last uh how's uh how's jay doing i'm good man just chilling
just drinking my coffee here
about to edit this bitch
oh yeah
probably go to the
from first to last show later
tonight
oh that's today huh
yeah oh shit that's cool
yeah I'm gonna go on a nostalgia kick
just go fucking sing the songs I
grew up listening to you know
that's gonna me a sick ass fucking show man
it'd be cool
it's right here at House of Blues
hell yeah
Yeah, my wife is debating whether she wants to go or not, so I guess we'll see.
Yeah, you won't know until last minute.
Yeah, see how tired she is after work and stuff.
Yeah, sometimes when you're done working, I don't want to do shit.
Yeah, so she's like either you go by yourself or I'll let you know.
Nice.
So that's that.
Going to shows by yourself is fucking sick.
Yeah, I don't mind it.
I like doing shit by myself.
Yeah.
I like being by myself.
It's nice.
Yeah.
and you can leave when you want.
Yeah.
It kind of forces you to be,
I don't know, talk to people, I guess, maybe.
Yeah.
It's either you're just weird and alone
or you're free.
And you're just like, hey.
Totally.
That'd be cool.
Be a bunch of emoes packed into one spot tonight.
People are going to be crying.
Oh, yeah.
Sick, bad, man.
I'm glad they're still around.
Yeah, they're fucking popping, dude.
It's sick.
Yeah, they came about.
It's pretty sick.
well hell yeah man um ready for some questions our first ones okay so just uh give a little backstory to the first question
this has been so this could be a part two to a question that i answered at this point might have been
over a year ago um and it's been bugging me ever since i'll be driving here i'm like fuck i fucked up um
so just so you know
um
jonesy
97
asked
what is your guitar
mount rushmore
so we had a question like this similar
and I gave a top four
and uh
it wasn't until after it was posted
I was driving I'm like
oh my God I didn't say this person or that person
oh no
and it's been bothering me
ever since so this is my time to
redeem myself.
Because I gave like a,
it's like a Mount Rushmore
of rhythm guitar players.
And
I'm trying to remember what
it might be lower.
No, it's not, it's not that one.
It's the actual Mount Rushmore.
It's literally like
what it's called.
So obviously, it's two years ago.
This is two fucking years ago.
So obviously, pick Monkey.
I think we picked
Johnny Ramon, right?
And then we picked,
uh,
I don't,
did we do these time stamps?
Oh yeah.
And we picked Dick Dale,
huh?
Wow.
Okay,
so we did Johnny Ramon,
Malcolm Young,
Dick Dale and,
uh,
Monkey,
right?
Is that,
is that who I picked?
Okay,
so this is my time to redeem myself.
And a name I didn't say last time.
So I'm going to do another four.
And I'm not going to say the obvious one because I already said a monkey
Yeah, so that's that that that's obvious and the name I didn't say last time that was has them bothering me
Which I thought was last year's two fucking years ago. Oh my goodness dude
I was like. Oh my gosh, you idiot
You didn't say Dino from Fear Factory you piece of shit
So Matt Rushmore a rhythm guitar player's Dino for Fear Factory like 100% dude
it's kind of almost impossible to do a top four
because you're going to leave somebody out
but the top was Dino Gazzar as from Fear Factory
I mean I'll be riding your riffs dude still
and like oh this sounds like
D-Manufacturer
like I'll be I'll listen to that record
and like oh shit he was doing this like way before me
like like the low tuning
seven string kind of
no that sounds like a riff I would write but he already did it
I mean you're talking about one of the best right hands in the game
um I took a lot of tips from him like
he came in the idea of putting weight on your wrist
and on your fingers to get a
to get a better chug
and that's a tip I got from him
but dude he is I mean obsolete is just one of the
it's one of my favorite records.
I mean, it's one of the flags here.
I mean, we'll put a picture of it later.
But a Fear Factory obsolete is one of the flags up in this room.
And I'm like, how can I have that flag hanging?
And say your Mount Rushmore, not say, Dino.
I was like, oh, Garza, you fucking idiot, dude.
I had to say it, dude, it's been bothering me for two years.
Literally, I'd be driving up here.
I'm like, how did you not say, Dino?
The first time I heard shot.
I was like oh that was it dude I heard shock edge crusher and then I went to the warehouse music and bought that record I've been jamming it ever since it's still unconstant I still put it on I'll be at the gym and I get just get taken back it's like it's very rare where you're putting a record and front to back it's just like what the fuck every song every riff you're just like what the fuck dude that's one that's one of those records so
Part 2, Mount Rushbourne.
Dean Gazzar is...
I feel like I have, like, a weight lifted off my chest right now, man.
It doesn't bother me.
How do you fucking idiot?
But, uh...
Right, who would be...
Oh, I got it.
Oh, Jay, I got...
I got the second one.
It's a good one.
And the cops outside, no.
We got...
We got sirens outside.
But, uh...
You know who no one talks about, dude?
And they're my top three favorite band.
We talked about the drummer last solo.
Seven dust.
Dude, Clint is a fucking beast, dude.
Clint and John, like, bro.
And I wonder we could like, we should probably like combine them.
Clint and John, I'm gonna combine them.
Or maybe do a three, two and three.
Like, no one really ever talks about their playing stuff.
But man, everyone rips off seven dust.
It's just like, I remember seeing that years ago.
I'm like, man, every metalcore band is like ripping out seven dust.
So it's kind of cool to see them get like their recognition.
But I've played those songs.
Like you listen to like denial.
There's like these little nuances and like intricacies.
I'm like, oh, I can't even like.
Like, I'm a new metal guy.
I, I, I, I, I, I could barely play him.
Same at home, a waffle.
I still can't play Rumblefish.
And I've been playing it with Alex, our previous drummer.
Since no time of bleed days, we'll like open up.
Well, like, either get ready to write a record or we're getting ready for a tour.
Like, he'll just start playing that beat.
And then I was like, I'll just join him.
I don't I still don't know that fucking pattern.
I'll try.
You know what?
Just because I make a fore on myself.
Let's just.
It's like, what is that pattern, dude?
The fucking.
I don't know that pattern.
Like, what is that fucking pattern?
Real quick, I was trying to do a play-through of that song.
I was going to post it on Instagram.
And I trashed it because it sounded so bad.
I can't get that pattern.
So it sounds easy, but we actually sit down and fucking learn that pattern.
I don't know it.
Yeah, awesome song.
Those, I mean, Clint and John are just goaded.
I wonder if I should combine them as one?
No, you know what?
Let's, let's, I can't even put them at two or three.
They're both like, I mean, they just created the sound.
So they're both tied for two and three.
Clint and John your fucking go to dude.
This is funny how we're just talking about Morgan on the last one, but number four, am I going to fucking ruin my life?
Am I going to say something stupid and regret it for another two years?
Oh, number four.
What?
I'm out Rushmore.
Number four.
Oh my gosh, dude.
I'm sweating.
The AC in here has been fucked up.
I'm not sure what happened.
But, uh, number four.
Oh
Oh, I don't know
It's going to be number four piece of shit
Oh my gosh
I think the last one
The first one was more like
It was well-rounded
Like with monkey
Malcolm Dick Dale
Kind of gave up the full spectrum
Of like rhythm playing
This is more geared towards me
So Dino, John Clint
I've already talked about West
I've already talked about Mike
Belt Rush. What my
good. I know the reason why
I'm not saying a name right now
I just know there's
someone I'm not thinking of and
if I don't say it, it's going to bug this fucking
shit out of me and I don't
want to cheat
and
and go
my phone. I do have a name
in my head. I'm debating on saying it or not.
I'm debating
I should just say it, huh?
I just fucking say it.
Alright, I got it.
I think I got it.
Okay.
I got it.
Okay.
Number four, Darren from System.
I said it.
Dude, toxicity is fucking just insane.
Yeah, I spent a lot of time learning system songs like,
I think my favorite is needle.
I really like that clean verse.
You know, again, like the,
you listen to it.
It's like really,
like really catchy songs and,
you know,
like,
oh,
they do like radio hits and stuff.
And then once you actually sit down,
you know,
like I'm tuning to drop C or,
or,
or,
um,
and I'm learning like needle.
I'm like,
I can,
I'm not playing it right.
I'm just,
I'm like missing something.
It's like,
that's like,
was always fascinating to me about like the
the whole genre
um
but that record is
full of wrists
I'm like
do one fucking person
wrote this shit
one person
wrote this record dude
and uh
a song I learned recently
when I say recently I mean like the past year
like 12 months
is uh
what's that song called
it's not the first record
it's the last track
I want to say it's
pluck
I want to say it's pluck
or it's like a capital words
I think
yeah
but that that bridge is just like
I don't know
it just fucking gets me
and there's a couple of like
leads on that record
I'm like I try to learn
and I just don't have it
it's like it's like a feel
that Darren has
that uh
I guess
it's this fun
it's just fun to try to try to like mimic it
but it's
pretty much impossible
yeah and what's crazy about songs like from system or seven dust is like even more so like
not a lot of good covers on youtube i've debated dude like posting covers on youtube i'm like do
always covers suck like how do you say this like guitar players that are really good
tend not to be learning these kind of songs and post it on youtube like you know someone has to do
it and I might be the guy.
Be out like trying to learn
Sitsam songs or seven dust songs
or like oh no fucking Power Man
5,000 like this is not like
tap root. There's like no like
great covers out there.
Hepp E. It's like all like that whole umbrella
there's just not good covers out there.
But I mean
if you learn those songs
are really fun to play. They're really fucking fun to play.
So
as I'm talking
I mean other names popped up
fuck
alright I'm gonna save it for a part three
I already have names in my head
for the next one fuck
oh
sucks
it sucks when you put it in like a number
but uh
yeah I missed a big one
oh whatever
well
I'll post my
Mount Rushmore part three
next year
after I get really
depressed
okay so
first one dino
check out obsolete
this is one of my favorite records of all time
um
Clint and john from seven dust
home is my top
um
and daren from system
if i was to pick one it'll be toxicity
and uh
but i put on that first record pretty often too
but if I had to choose
with a gun in my head I'll pick that one so there's some shit
for you to check out that's my personal
Mount Rushmore
thank you
Jonesy
97 from YouTube
I really appreciate your question
I'm trying to
fucking condense this shit I'm sorry
so second one
all right
Jay I might need help with this one
Giancarlo
Thank you
I wasn't even fucking close
and I'm gonna put myself in a weird spot again
That's what we do
It's like I don't care of the decor or not
all right
top three
definal bands
number one is easy
skinless
foreshadowing our demise
is my favorite death metal record
and their first
one progression towards evil is not
literally
I heard
I think it's the track two
on the first record
progression
I think it's
extermination of my filthy species
When I heard that
That was the first skinless song I heard
And that it literally changed my fucking life
For sure
It's one of those records
I literally print out the logo that day
And I put it on my fucking
High School folder
Proud
I'm just fucking Noah
Their guitar player says
Groovin dude
Tugging grooving
Um
Really fucking inspiring
Um
So if there's
I'm they're number one like by far
and this is where it gets hard
I'm gonna put myself on a spot again
who if I'm jamming
also like the cover is fucked up
is people hanging
I have that t-shirt's pretty sick
if I'm jamming
death metal
what do I want to hear
I am putting myself in a word spot right now
because I have it in my head
and I'm debating how I'm going to say it
because it's probably going to come out wrong
I want to say
I wish I wasn't sick and my brain was
firing
my brain processing power isn't optimal
my current state
but a definite record I love
is cannibal corpse
the bleeding
I saved my lunch money
for a week and I went to
warehouse music again and I fucking bought that
record. It was fucking I loved it.
Do you strip rip and strangled on my or stripped
grape and strangled?
I'm trying to get to monetize right now. But that shit was
fucking sick, dude.
It's really cool to get that backstory
from
from Chris. That was a really cool moment.
You don't know. I'm talking about
Chris shared. Chris Barnes shared his story. How he wrote
those lyrics?
and so I will put cannibal corpse up there
that's how I'm gonna say it
um
every era of cannibal is sick
and I think that's what makes them
so unique
and still top dogs
they're still the top dogs dude
george that's been
carrying that fucking torch man
and it's fucking sick if you watch cannibal
it's I mean they're the top definitely band still
on a planet fucking awesome
um
they would go on to
release
it was George that's fucking sick too
but
when I bought this record you was like
oh this is
you know sometimes like
it sounds silly but
when you put on a record
you just want it to be
like you know what I'm going to move for death metal
what's a death metal
record and he's like put on the
the classics
and you're like oh okay yeah this is sick
right number three
I have a
one in my head already.
And I'm trying to think in real time
if I'm missing something, which I probably am.
I'm going to say
top three, death money. I have it in my head.
But I'm trying to think about missing
something.
Or might be like last time where
it comes to be as I'm saying
the third one. But on my head
is eternal suffering.
If you're only in tragedies
a fucking phenomenal record.
We talked about it.
with a reverent.
That's why I tuned to drop G.
Literally, I was jamming this shit.
And when we were doing the,
literally the first ever suicide songs demo,
this is pretty much.
This is,
when we had a Lod Juice,
studios in Riverside,
which at the time was like the spot
to record your demo.
I always jamming this record.
I was like, fuck it.
I tuned my Jackson Rhodes to Drop G
the night before.
Because it's felt right.
And, yeah, they were really big on, they were really big for me.
Like, just chugging, death metal, thrash blast, the whole dynamic.
So that is my personal.
They need to release some more, uh, some more merch.
Because I'm not the only one talking about them.
So, uh, you got, you got to capitalize, dude.
You got to capitalize on that shit.
All right.
So skinless, Kenema corpse.
and eternal suffering are my top three.
And I'm sure someone's going to call me a poser, but I don't care.
And cool.
I think we're ready for the next question.
Matthew Sears 4044.
Any methods to take a sick riff and build a song around it?
And as I was saying earlier, this is the question that I prepped up.
So I gave you kind of a taste earlier.
But songwriting is tough and building off a riff is still very surprisingly tough because songwriting to me is a fucking mystery, man.
It's just a mystery.
Like where riffs come from, where songs come from.
and then when you have a sick riff,
what do you do with it?
But some good examples
of what has worked for, I mean,
guess me, because I don't know what the fuck I'm doing,
but an answer will be a good example.
We could hit pretty much
the opposite spectrum of eras.
We could talk about the new record and the first.
So to go back to your question,
let's see, like, you have like a riff,
and I've said this many,
times but man
just getting your brain
out of the way
um
it's still a struggle
dude
I'm gonna be 41 years old
and I'm still struggling
with uh
getting the brain out of the way
something you have a fucking sick riff
and it's like and then
or a riff comes out
or someone tells you to play something
and then you have this riff
this riff is just born
okay now what
um
so for like an answer
you have like the fucking uh
so it's okay
what do you do with that?
I think I have a...
Oh, that's what happened.
I have a double octave on my tone right now.
I was like, what is that?
There it is.
So if my guitar sound like shit, the whole podcast, that's why.
But whatever.
We have this riff.
It's like, oh, shit, now what?
And then, like, the hands kind of will...
It's so weird.
It's like, what happened?
And then I remember, like, just...
I don't know where this other rip came up.
Okay.
And it's kind of like keeping the hands where the riff already is, is a nice challenge.
And then like kind of switching like the pattern.
That kind of let that spark, that spark.
When it's there, it's there.
So then I remember like we'd stop and then we started tugging again.
So as you can see, still in the same kind of area of where that first riff came.
And then okay, we had that riff and then, okay, we need to separate the tremlo to the next chug.
Okay, we'll stay right here.
Like, kind of staying there, you know, just kind of letting like the tremlo, the harmonics kind of choose themselves, if that makes any sense.
And then the song happens.
Okay, what do you do for the outro?
Oh, I don't know.
What was that pattern that we did before?
Add a pause.
Just adding a pause,
change the riff.
It's like, oh shit, what we, I mean,
we need an outro still.
Let's just keep that pattern.
And then stay there.
And instead of, instead of having,
the movement, keep it one, one fucking fret, dude.
So it's kind of stays, a song would kind of stay in a certain area or a certain mood.
And just fucking, just staying there.
Still to this day, it kind of blows me away.
But that's a pretty good example.
A song like a, like a graceless.
the song calls to stay here but my mind wants to come in and change it all up like what is it
oh you got to oh you got to do this sometimes sometimes the heart calls for excuse me it calls for
a key change but sometimes like what's what's best for the song does the i mean the key change
sounds good to your brain but actually this i mean it's keep it here but my mind wants to do this
I just want to keep it
It might call for it if the song calls for it do it
But if it doesn't which it didn't
I want a short fucking banger
Keep it down here
I want to head bang the whole time
And then the next
Rip is still there
It's kind of the state
It's just kind of staying there
And that's kind of some methods
That have worked
For us
For me personally
Just kind of let in like the song
If you have
I guess they call it like
the meat
and potatoes
I mean
if you have that one dude
it's kind of the hardest part man
like if you
if you have that one dude
the rest will kind of follow
then trusting
trusting that something else will come out of
like thin air essentially
you just kind of just trusting
the momentum of the riff
and then scam
whether you're
yourself or you're with a drummer or something just it's usually that first thing that flies out
after the main riff it's kind of what stays like it it's kind of funny like those those initial
sparks dude it's this i still don't know i i don't know where where they come from if that's from
practicing a lot if that's from uh not knowing what you're doing i i don't know it's just you had that riff
start playing more
you start playing off it
and then something else just
fucking flies out
you're like oh shit there it is
but it's usually that first spark
that first
variation
of the main riff
that tends to kind of stick
and then the song
will spill from there
but hopefully that that helps
I was trying to
condense it for you
but I think we're ready for
I think we're going to do
we're gonna skip this one
I'm gonna go
with the yeah
let's do number five
I think I
got this
JDCTX
acoustic I mean that's
probably the best I can do
is it going to be hard not drinking
when you when you tour
definitely not
I've crossed over man
I don't even crave it dude I don't
create alcohol anymore.
I'll tell a little story.
Literally,
it's why I'm sick.
I was at 7-Eleven.
And
the
dude there was very nice.
He offered me a fresh pizza.
He was like, just stay here for three minutes.
I'll make you a fresh one.
I'm like, yeah. I'm not going to say no of that.
And I was this
I was looking at they had
any non-acoholic options
which they do not
and I was just looking at the alcohol
there I'm like damn
my eyes is
look at this shit and pick what I wanted
and drank it
and I was just looking
and it's like at the fucking
fridge
it's like
not one temptation
in a weird way it kind of made me sick
I don't know I've already
fully crossed over
I'm very lucky crossed over
I'm very lucky
And now in that regard
I'm not tempted
Drinking's fun
But I'm looking forward to going on tour
And not drinking
I'm actually not
The problem is going to be
fucking eating like shit
That's what I'm worried about
I know it's not like exciting
To say that
But
Like how am I going to avoid
Those snacks
How am I going to avoid
McDonald's at midnight
that's the that's the main issue
but
not going to be hard at all
it's going to be pretty
pretty easy
really
but I appreciate you
asking that
and we'll do one more question
the very next one
it's the same subject so I thought
I thought it kind of made sense
Jay I'm needing your help with this one for sure
Dikini
Ooh
88
has
has your riff riding
changed at all
since you stopped drinking
oh yeah
oh fuck yeah dude
it's um
man I don't want to say
fuck
saying
that there's clarity
isn't right
um
I guess
not drinking is
gay room for ideas to come out
if that makes sense
I mean
Yeah,
make your exit
wouldn't exist
If I was drinking
Kind of like
Leaving room for
There's just room
For sure to come out
More time in a day
I guess
You're not waking up
Hungover or
Um
So more days
Feeling inspired
I guess
Just had just more room
Um
I found that more riffs
came out
in the morning when I wasn't hungover or something.
So that was interesting.
So make your exit wouldn't exist.
Graceless wouldn't exist.
If I was drinking.
So whatever that sounds like,
you know, I didn't drink in the early days.
So those demos, the EP,
which people tend to gravitate towards right now with the revival,
the cleansing.
I was,
I was sober.
Didn't drink until I was 20.
So I was kind of like returning to what we already did
But uh
It might be just age too like
I don't know you gotta do the things that have more energy really
And uh yeah I can't imagine going back um
I'm already having ideas
For if we do
Another uh batch songs
I'm already inspired I guess I don't know
This is more time than day I guess
So there's more time in the day
more time to be inspired, more time to play.
But it's hard to deny when I'm seeing, like, the numbers.
I'm seeing people jam those two songs,
and those two songs wouldn't exist if I was shrinking.
So that's all I had to go by.
So pretty fucking, pretty fucking sick, man.
I think we're good.
Sorry, I'm a little bit stuffy.
It's what you get when you're at fucking yogurt land.
I just fucking is getting that.
Oh, so good.
They have those little, I don't know what they're called.
They're like these little bubble things, little fruit bubbles.
Like, I'm just into those, man.
And they eat them and they pop.
It's like a fucking, I don't know what they're, it's amazing.
But we'll already be there.
This comes out, but I'll just say it anyway.
but I'm going to Chavelle this Saturday at the Honda Center.
That's September 3rd, so that we passed, but I'll be there with my lady.
I don't take my lady to make any shows, but this one's very called for.
It's chill.
I'll be at the Chad Gray show at the Observatory, September 6th.
I'll be there rocking.
I'm going to try to go to the Soulfly show.
the whiskey and go-go
September 8th.
I'm really doing my damnness
to be there.
And
suicide silence
will be at Furnace Fest
so if you're
going to that
or you're
around the Birmingham,
Alabama area,
that's September 11th.
We're playing with
bringing the horizon.
A lot of cool bands.
So that's going to be
a big show for us.
So if we're going on that,
cool.
Stay what's up.
I'll be around.
Also, that got announced since the last check in solo.
Me and Jerry will be at the Headbanger's boat.
We'll be there October.
It's October 30th and November 3rd.
That's the Lamb and God in flames.
Zach Wild is going to be there.
I'll be doing one live podcast with Osho Parish.
Their guitar player is Chris Dorrie and Ben.
So that'll be fun.
the first ever life podcast
that we'll be doing
and I'll probably do one more.
I'm still thinking.
I think we got it, but
so yeah, I'll be, I'll be,
let's see, that's Miami
and the Bahamas.
We're gonna do a podcast
in the Bahamas.
That's fucking sick.
And, yeah, as I always say,
uh,
suicide sounds going on tour,
a mirror,
angel maker
Sinastia
Full U.S.
November through December
It's a long one
Um
tickets are going
First show is a hometown
Riverside
Where I just saw 7 dust
Starts November 6
Ends December
Uh
I believe 13th it ends
It's 1720
So starts the home
Ends the home
Pretty fucking sick
So I'll leave a link
In the description

Um
So this guest has been requested, oddly enough.
And, uh, it happened.
And, uh, he might have been the most talented musician we've had on the podcast.
So, uh, next week is, it's already done.
Uh, I'll see you for Billy Strings.
We, uh, we jam some acoustic stuff.
We talk about drugs.
Uh,
metal he jammed the seventh string yeah i mean it had everything i i it was it was fucking
i got my own private show just looking at i play acoustic i do it's fucking his playing style
dude it's just i'm trying to understand but i'll talk about out on the next little probably
but his playing style is i mean that's a level of talent that i don't think i ever seen uh in person
before so pretty sick i'll see you next week for billy strings
And yeah, that's it, forever love.
See you.
