it's Tuesday April 23rd I'm Jeff Schwartz this is Jeff Schwartz of Smart on You it's our favorite
episode of the entire offseason it's our mocked draft spectacular all of us are here Jeff Schwartz
Gabe Goodwin Matt Ford Hank Groberg we're going to go through all 32 picks of the NFL draft here
on Thursday night in the first round and we're going to make all the selections we have not
had trades in the past guys but I think we're going to do it this year but they have to be
good trades we're going to have good trades we're going to do it this year. But it has to be good trades.
We're going to have good trades.
We're going to go through the quarterbacks,
wide receivers, offensive linemen, defensive players.
We've structured this to, I think, pick for our favorite teams,
except Hank did not give Gabe the Jets.
That's disappointing.
So we'll go in the order that is set up for our mock draft here.
And Gabe, who is our known football expert,
we'll start right now, Gabe.
You have the first pick.
It is Chicago picking number one
after the Panthers trade out of last year.
We're going to start with the bank.
Who are you drafting first,
Gabe Goodwin for the Chicago Bears?
I don't like the way that you said
who is our known expert with such sarcasm.
And I'm not drafting for my favorite
team but i am drafting for my favorite college football player of recent memory it's obvious to
everyone who the bears are going to pick so i'll save us time i just want to make a prediction
yes so caleb williams is the pick we all know that i think the floor for caleb is kyler murray
the ceiling for caleb is just a little below
Patrick Mahomes.
The most likely few
first years of his career
are the Josh Allen trajectory.
Great fantasy player.
Not sure what happens
when it matters.
We'll find out.
I'd like you to not do
the Patrick Mahomes comparison.
I'm getting,
it's very frustrating
this time of year,
the last week of the year
when we hear,
I saw one from Malik Neighbors,
like one random scout, I was like,
he's Tyreek Hill and Justin Jefferson all put together.
It's like, oh, take a deep breath.
So I think you're right there.
And look, best situation a rookie has walked into since when?
Forever?
With the offensive line, they've improved.
With the running backs, the wide receivers,
with the potential draft, the wide receiver at nine.
And with the defense, he's walking into a better situation
than the commanders who are picking number two. Now the the defense, he's walking into a better situation than the commanders
who are picking number two.
Now the commanders guys,
that's Matt's team.
That is Hank's team.
Hank is such a fan.
He's wearing the jersey of a commander
who is a kicker, I believe.
I don't think that's a thing
that we talked about on this podcast.
So the punter, we do punters.
Oh, the punter.
Oh, that makes sense.
You guys punt the ball a lot.
He's also our best player.
So I do what I can.
Matt, I don't know how we're doing this here with the commanders, Oh, the punter. Oh, that makes sense. You guys punt the ball a lot. He's also our best player, so I do what I can. You guys can choose.
Matt, I don't know how we're doing this here with the commanders,
but you come with a group decision as the elder of the two of you guys to who you guys are drafting.
Got it.
So we are sort of a house divided, it seems,
between Hank and I, both commanders fans.
I believe the pick will be Jaden Daniels.
That's based on some light sourcing in the business,
just light sourcing in the business just light
sourcing um but i think the case for him is is pretty simple right he had obviously the amazing
year in college last year this these questions about well he wasn't good four years ago like i
don't i don't really think that should matter in the scouting report i thought about it this way
if caleb williams weren't in this draft would there even be a question if jayden daniels would
go first overall like for some reason just removing caleb makes it feel a little bit more
obvious so i to me i think it's jayden but i it's not i think hank has a different opinion
yeah i think part of it is i'm a little more traumatized than rg3 that was like a very
formative period for me and having jayden daniels where the comparison is so easy to make it's a little scary but also with drake may like i pulled up some numbers here his redshirt freshman
season he was incredible he led the league and uh he led his team and like rushing yards and
rushing touchdowns as well as passing and then this year he just had no help at all like they
have um with davantez um the wide receiver coming out he's gonna be drafted this year but he was
still like the drop rate.
He had more drops than any other quarterback in this class.
He was trying to push the ball furthest downfield.
You're explaining you're losing, buddy.
I don't think this is winning anybody over.
I just think he's getting no help.
He's getting no help.
Like, Dan Daniels has two receivers
who are going to be taken in the first half of the first round.
The reason why I think it's Daniels
is there's less to work on right now.
And I think Washington, obviously, is sort of in win-now mode
because of new ownership, just the way it sort of is, right?
I could see them wanting to take Jane Daniels for that reason.
Also, his athleticism.
Drake may can move a little bit,
but being able to run the football is important, I think,
especially for Kingsbury's offense.
So am I breaking the tie here?
Yeah, that's what it was.
I'm going with Jane and Daniels then.
That's who I think they're going to draft.
And I've wagered on it too, by the way.
You can wager on the draft, guys.
And pay attention to the line movement.
I got Jay and Daniels the other day at a much better number.
So I'm very happy with my strategic play there on Daniels.
Okay, Hank, we're going just to you for pick three.
There's the New England Patriots. Talk, by the way, of them trading out,
which I think they would do if someone offered them a lot of draft picks.
They have a lot of holes in their roster.
But just like every team, we're going to go through the next seven or eight picks.
I think they're all willing to trade down.
The question is obviously finding a partner to trade up.
Yeah, and I mean, you know, I don't know how I'm going to find a partner here,
but it's nice because I still get to, oh, wait, what's that?
My phone's ringing.
It's Matthew Ford.
Oh, no, you have the wrong number.
It's Kwesi Adofu Mensah.
I'm the GM of the Minnesota Vikings.
Yeah, that was bold.
I wasn't going to try that one.
Whoever the GM of the Patriots is now, I just forgot.
It's not Bill Belichick anymore.
Here's the offer.
Consider this.
Pick 11 and pick 23 and maybe some other picks that don't apply to the first round of this
mock draft for number three and the chance to draft Drake May.
What do you think?
Well, I mean, I'm actually not the Patriots GM.
I'm Rob Kraft.
And I'm the smartest person in the league, if we've learned anything this offseason.
I get full credit for the Patriots dynasty. And, you know, we took Tom Brady with
the six round pick. We can easily do that again. No big deal at all. So, yeah, yeah, we'll take
this. We don't need a quarterback here. Yeah. Picks are yours. All right. So the Vikings are
up at number three. Good doing business with you, Mr. Kraft. Yes. Yes. Vikings are going to take
Drake May. This is their chance.
They're the logical team.
They have two first round picks this year.
The Patriots have already talked about trading back and that it makes sense
for them.
They are going nowhere fast.
This gives them two shots.
And by the way,
they could still potentially get a quarterback number 11 or 23.
So the Vikings have moved up.
We have replaced Kirk Cousins with a bigger Kirk Cousins.
Let's go.
Are they going to repackage the picks for
trade up later?
We're still working it out.
Gabe, your face didn't like that.
Didn't like that. Why not? All of that wind
up to get us the next
Kirk Cousins in Minnesota.
Here's the thing, man.
Jeff, help me out. You're smarter
than all four of us combined. I've been
on this Drake May thing for a while now.
I watched a tweet the other day
where someone said, I've really been having a hard
time finding why Drake May is so good,
but I did find some good
throws in the second half of the game against
Pitt. That's encouraging.
This person was not being sarcastic.
Are we trying too hard to claim that Drake May is good? No, I think that we do that with every prospect though,
right? I mean, the J.J. McCarthy thing is fascinating to me. And we'll get to him at
some point. I would imagine next couple of picks here, you know, the McCarthy thing is like the
same thing. It's like, well, guys, he didn't make those two third down throws that one time.
You're like, well, yeah, the other guys make those two third down throws that one time. You're like, well, yeah,
the other guys made 70 of those same throws over the last two years.
And this is the time of year when you have to do that.
Look, the truth is,
and we just saw another 2021 first round draft pick traded in Zach Wilson.
That's four of the top five in that class,
the top 15 picks that have been traded or moved on from the team
that drafted them.
And the reality is, in the top 15, even top 20, really, only one of those guys is good.
2020 is an outlier, where it's Burrow and Tua and Herbert.
For the most part, just one guy.
We know Caleb Williams is going to, in my opinion, is that guy, right?
He's in a great situation.
So now we have to convince ourselves that Jay Daniels is the outlier,
Drake May is the outlier, McCarthy's the outlier,
because they all have the hell of warts.
I mean, Caleb Williams' wart is like, I don't know,
he didn't run the offense sometimes.
When you watched the offense last season,
there wasn't an offense to run sometimes at USC.
So I think people are trying to convince themselves that May
or Jay Daniels is that guy,
but the situation in Minnesota is not bad.
You have a good offense.
You have a well-run offense,
you know,
Daniels in Washington.
I don't know,
Dan Quinn and Cliff Kingsbury.
It feels like the worst spot to be in.
If Minnesota trades up a three.
And I think the bears again,
have a great spot for Kayla Williams.
So we're doing this with all these guys.
We're trying to convince ourselves outside of Caleb Williams
that this is the next guy.
All right, I am pick number four here.
So remember, we have Caleb Williams, J. Daniels, Drake May.
That's how the betting market, by the way, is at the moment.
I did make a wager.
Lost 700, guys.
Caleb Williams, J. Daniels, Drake May,
and then J.J. McCarthy will go number four.
I'm going to take the pick for Arizona
and take Marvin Harrison Jr.
If a team trades up, the Raiders, let's say,
the Broncos, let's say,
the Broncos feel like a better team right now to trade up.
They would trade to four or maybe to five.
I think five is an option for someone
if the Cardinals say, look, man,
we're fine with Marvin Harrison.
Your trade package is not good enough.
I'm thinking Marvin Harrison right here, who's the best wide receiver in this draft. I will say, though, quickly, Roman Dune is really good. I feel like he's not getting
the respect he deserves in this whole process. He's incredible. He'll be drafted fairly soon.
I wouldn't show Marvin Harrison Jr. Easy pick for the Cardinals. Gabe, you have the Chargers,
your new adopted team in Los Angeles. Who are you taking?
Okay, I don't want to waste a lot of time with this.
I just want to say that I don't think the conventional wisdom is right.
I don't think a team that got rid of Keenan Allen and Mike Williams and used a first-round pick on a guy who we haven't really figured out
if he has it or not yet is so obviously going for the best available wide receiver.
Every mock draft I've
looked at has either a dunze or neighbors here. And I'm here to tell you, I think that's BS,
especially because the new coach, I don't think they're going wide receiver. I think that their
offensive line is garbage, but could get better quickly. And if they get a guy who can play right
tackle or move some pieces around, Jeff, this is where you have to help me out.
I think they'd prefer that to protect Herbert than to give him another weapon that may or
may not matter.
Every receiver who's played there has put up numbers with Justin Herbert.
I don't think they need a first round pick.
So I'm going to go Joe Alt from Notre Dame.
They'll slide some pieces around.
How would that work, Jeff?
Oh, it's a fantastic football player.
This feels like an obvious fit.
I think if the draft breaks down the way it is,
the Chargers are out of five.
I think someone's training up in front of the Giants
to take McCarthy.
The Broncos kind of sirens go off right now.
Broncos moving to five.
Cheaper than moving to four, obviously.
And Harbaugh says, look, we'll move back to, was it 12?
And there's going to be seven more offense alignment available at 12.
And we'll get another first round pick possibly next year.
But we'll keep Alt here.
I love Alt.
I think this is the Titans will be bummed if Alt gets taken right here at five.
And the Titans will have to kind of change their plans at six,
excuse me, at seven.
Hank, you have the Giants here at six.
Are they going McCarthy?
Are they going neighbors?
Are they going to Doonesay?
What are you doing here with the New York Giants?
Yeah, we're going McCarthy.
Oh, wow.
He's the Eli Manning-ist of the quarterbacks
in this year's draft, which makes it easy.
But also, Daniel Jones, two serious neck injuries in his
career he had one in 2021 another in 2023 tore his ACL last year like Dayball last month said
he wasn't sure Jones was going to be ready for the start of the season so I think the injury
thing's a real concern he's only played 16 games once in his career of course the Giants rewarded
him with like a four-year 160 million contract million contract after that. But they can get out after next season so we can give McCarthy a year
to finally play in some fourth quarters, like see if they can work with it.
And it's not a bad landing spot with Dayball either.
Look, I will say the argument, I understand the argument.
But I don't know what they're going to do.
I mean, they just gave Daniels all that money.
They're so prideful in New York that if they did this and basically admit defeat, right,
they admit defeat on the Daniels deal, their pride is that I think they're going to get
in the way of doing this.
And, look, I'm of the opinion this for years now, just draft a quarterback until you find
a quarterback.
If Daniels is not your guy, just take McCarthy and move it along.
But they're so prideful in New York, man.
I don't think they would do this.
But your reasoning is spot on.
I mean, it makes sense
for them to want to do this because look, after this year, Daniels is not going to be there.
We know that. And most teams don't look ahead to next year. As far as the draft, they might know
the names of the quarterbacks. They've done no scouting for those guys. And they can look and
say, look, man, next year, the name, I don't like the names. McCarthy's the best guy. Let's get him
in our building now. we'll just have Jones play
one more year we know he's walking out and we have McCarthy in 2025 to be our guy so I don't
dislike the pick I don't think they're going to do this but it makes a ton of sense um just if
they did and they look they admit defeat on Jones and move it along all right Matt you're at seven
the uh the Titans would have loved Joe Alt he's not there at seven and um what are the Titans would have loved Joe Alt. He's not there at seven. And what are the Titans doing here
without the big fellow that they want to draft?
There's lots of options.
Ring, ring, ring.
Am I getting a phone?
Oh, hold on.
Oh my God.
We're doing bits about the Titans.
This is the easiest place to save time.
Hello, a brand car-thon here.
How can I help you?
This is Joe Douglas with the New York Jets.
Are you interested in moving down three pieces?
This phone doesn't work.
I can't hear you. No, I think jets the jets would like to move up right here i think we've
seen a slide for a player we've had our eyes on we want to we want to move up and make a move
what's your offer there big guy we're going to give you our pick which is at the the 10th spot
just a few picks later and then uh we're going to fill it in with some other things that that
make it really fair and both fan bases will be happy with the deal got it all right so i will accept
your number 10 pick and uh also allow me to make one of your other picks on this show we can we
can decide what that is so go ahead go ahead and get get aaron rogers a new weapon there uh
mr douglas great talking to you all right uh this one we're going roma dunze for the jets uh
which is i think i what i've seen is a davante adams comp for him and so i pairing rogers with
a new and improved sorry gabe would you like to chime in this is so dumb what are you talking
about all right well i think i think what the question comes down to is do rob sala and do
joe douglas do they care what happens to the Jets after they leave the team? Because if they don't
win this year, they're leaving the team. They're not going to be around that much longer. So I
think as much as having a nice new offensive tackle that could, you know, be a cornerstone
of that O-line for the next five, six years, that would probably be the smartest play for the Jets,
but they want to win now. They've got to get Rodgers some weapons in the offense.
They need to have that explosive offense that was promised when he came to town.
And Odunze, I saw him kill my team in the college football playoff.
He's awesome. He's so good.
You know, you'd sell a ton of jerseys in New York.
So yeah, get Odunze in there.
Go win one playoff game.
Gabe, the non-Jets fan got pretty bummed about that one.
I'm angry because it's a stupid pick.
It's a waste of a pick.
Grom's a nice player, but they got Mike Williams to be the two.
They have Garrett Wilson.
Everyone agrees he's a top-five guy.
Aaron Rodgers is the problem, and keeping Aaron Rodgers healthy is the problem.
The only time in the history of the Jets being relevant was when they had giant fat
guys who knew the game of football and stayed healthy that's it that's the recipe forget Rex
Ryan forget Mark Sanchez forget Rivas it was fat guys smashing people yes but the problem is the
Jets I think are beholden to what Rogers wants and if Rogers wants a Brock Bowers or a wide receiver
they're going to take that.
They have Smith and Moses and their tackles right now,
two guys that are aging out.
So I would understand a tackle pick.
It's still possible that, you know,
if they stayed at 10, they would take a tackle.
But I have Atlanta at eight.
No offense, Falcons fans.
Just kind of a boring pick.
I'm taking Dallas Turner here,
the defensive end for Alabama.
I do think, and I've been told,
there is smoke for
Byron Murphy of Texas to be the first defensive player taken at eight overall here. But I don't
know. So we'll take the simple pick here and Turner gave, I believe you're on the clock here
for the bears at nine. Yeah, I'm up again with the bears. Now I'm not going to do what Hank just did
and add another weapon just for the hell of it,
like it's a fantasy football team.
They're trying to actually win games in the NFL.
So I don't have a lot of smart ideas here.
In a draft with so many good offensive linemen,
with what will presumably be a rookie quarterback starting week one,
we already have some good offensive weapons.
I have to imagine, Jeff, this is offensive line
or the best defensive player available.
So I'm open to suggestions.
I'm not trading the pick.
I'd like your analysis under those conditions, who we take in here.
Give me an offensive lineman.
Well, it's interesting.
I don't think they're going receiver.
For what the Bears would want from offensive linemen,
they're settled at right tackle with right.
I'm fairly certain they're fine with Jones at left tackle for now.
They could go with, and this is a fun draft with names, right?
There's a Olu Fashanu.
There's a Troy Fatanu and a Talis Fuaga.
If I were choosing here,
knowing that the Bears might want a guy
that can play tackle or guard,
I would take Troy Fatanu,
which is probably earlier than a lot of people maybe had him.
But that's what I would take to play a multitude of positions
across that offensive line, anywhere you sort of need him.
I know they're sort of entrenched a little bit at guards as well,
so maybe you're looking center here.
But to me, that's like the best option to just sort of cover your bases
because you can play a bunch of positions.
I am curious at nine, though,
if someone would trade up for Malik Nabors if he was still here.
Yeah, I think it's very likely Chicago is trading out of this pick.
I just didn't think it was worth confusing things.
Go with, who'd you say?
Troy Furtano.
Furtano, give me him.
And just one serious point,
because I watched pretty much every snap of Caleb for the last
two years.
The problem the guy has, and it's his problem, not the guys in front of him, he doesn't always
trust his blind side.
And then he starts running around, and then he starts making weird plays.
And against college athletes early in the season, San Diego State doesn't have an answer
for that.
Right.
But I have a feeling the Packers and the Lions will have an answer for that,
and he needs to be able to trust his blind side.
So I think they've got to build him a line fast.
I agree with you.
Sorry, I was muted there for a second.
I agree with you on Williams.
I mean, look, you've watched every rep of his.
I've watched every rep of his.
That's certainly what happened at the end of last season.
Look, again, I think also, too,
the structure of the offense last year was so bad at USC.
The structure of the Bears' offense with Waldron
is just going to be better, Gabe.
Like, it just is.
It's going to be more structured.
And I don't buy this idea that he can't play within structure.
He certainly can.
I saw Daniel Jeremiah today talk about too,
like how good of a person he is.
You know,
there's some sort of issues with the key,
with the fingernails painted and the crying to the mom.
It's like,
it's not at all a problem.
Like you don't want to USC has any issues with leadership.
He's been a great leader.
Teams rave about him,
which really teams the bear.
So,
all right.
So Troy Fotonu there,
offensive line,
Matt, you have, I believe the next two picks, all right. So, Troy Furtunu there, offensive line.
Matt, you have, I believe, the next two picks,
but you have Tennessee now 10 on the clock here.
What are the Titans doing?
Yes, and part of a complicated maneuvering with the league.
We've negotiated.
I will be drafting for the Patriots at 11 as well.
So, at number 10, I mean, this was an interesting situation for the Titans.
They were really looking for Joe Waltz.
I don't think they want to take the third offensive lineman off the board, and there's Malik Nabors.
And I know that they have Hopkins, and I know that they signed Calvin Ridley,
but I think in this, with Will Levis there, their best options,
they have a decent offensive line.
They invested in Skronsky last year.
I think if Neighbors was sitting here,
I don't think they would be able to pass him up.
I think that would give them a real leg up on offense.
So we're going to go with Malik Neighbors
at number 10 for Tennessee.
What do you think of that?
Traylon Burks, Dynasty owners are crying,
but it's a fun pick.
I think this is probably,
if the board broke out the way it did right now,
I think this is what they would do.
I know they like Olufesanu, the offensive tackle out of Penn State,
but I don't know if the people that like him in the building
are the ones that are the ones making decisions.
So I think you probably just can't pass up neighbors here.
It's important to point out that a lot of this sometimes
just goes off your board, right?
So let's say neighbors is the Titans' third highest rated player.
He's there at 10.
They're taking him.
They just are, right?
That's a process that continues to work year after year.
And so I like that process there.
Matt, you have the Patriots at 11.
They just need football players, good football players.
What are you taking for them?
I'm really thinking here because we basically,
here are our three paths.
First path is we take Fashanu we get our left tackle we make a
pretty sensical pretty patriotsy pick or we go with brock bowers who's probably the best offensive
specialist guy on the board you've got jacoby brissett there like maybe that's just like a
nice little piece you know you start you build a sort of from an unusual position or we do what i think i'm gonna do i think we're
gonna go ahead and make our swing at a franchise quarterback and the new england patriots are going
to take michael pennix at number 11 the oft injured oft maligned but quite good quarterback
who is has a very good chance at being the second best quarterback in this class.
I think if you took the injuries away and reduced a year from his age,
we'd be talking about him in the higher end of the first round.
So I think the Patriots take their swing here.
They were able to move back.
They were able to pick up another pick.
And I think that it makes sense for them to take Pennix here.
What do you guys think?
Wow.
Look, I'll just say this.
I don't think Pennix or Knicks,
those people in Washington,
you're so mean about Washington players.
I just don't see them as being franchise-altering quarterbacks.
And you have to take them.
I have the Broncos next.
I'm just letting you just think about that as I say this.
I think you have, there's such a thirst, again, for quarterback,
and you need to have the idea of drafting one until you find one.
But I'm not sure Penix is the right guy for this.
And I don't know if you can't protect him.
And we saw in games, Oregon game, the Michigan game,
when he's not protected, man, he gets bludgeoned.
And he doesn't move in the pocket terribly well,
even though he's a good athlete.
If you get him off his spot, he's not going to be as accurate.
He had the best offensive line in the country last year,
the best wide receivers in the country last year.
Those things concern me for him in the NFL.
I have Denver next at 12,
and I have to draft Bo Nix here because the Broncos need a quarterback. Guys, think about
this. Their room right now is Jared Stidham and Zach Wilson. If the plan is to suck and draft
quarterback next year, that's fine. To me, that's not what Sean Payne wants to do.
Why would Sean Payne be there to go through a rebuild, right?
They screwed up last year with the Russell Wilson deal.
Like, that happened, I guess, two years ago now, before Sean Payne.
It messed up.
And Payne, to me, is not going to sit through a season going 5-12
just to not, you know, to just do this again next season
and hope they found a quarterback in this draft.
So, I have Bo Nix.
I think he fits what Denver wants to do on offense.
Again, I don't see him as like,
I see him Derek Carr, but maybe more athletic.
And we've talked about Carr for years
in all his pockets and not the most glowing terms.
So I think I'm sort of forced to go Bo Nix here at 12.
Gabe didn't seem to like my pick.
No, I, what the what the hell what you're just
this is funny to say you're getting an older zach wilson no he's much better than zach wilson
okay i don't know man i good luck with that pick uh is it weird that jeff was out on pennix but
in on bo nicks i wonder if there's any reason that that could be.
What do you mean?
Do you guys think of any reasons?
I think both guys are not going to be elite franchise quarterbacks.
How about that?
Jennifer has been consistent about that,
but it is funny that the Oregon guy,
he can see the plus side in.
The Washington guy, he's a little more skeptical of,
as he wears a big O on his chest.
I drafted Troy Fittonu,
where ninth overall
from Washington, by the way. Does it make that point?
Thank you.
Well, I don't technically.
You have the Broncos.
No, I have the Raiders,
who are devastated because
there are the only serious rumors
that I've read about this draft
and all the various teams that want to trade down.
The only team I've seen as a viable trade up team are the Raiders. So let's say that in the real
world, it's very likely the Raiders got their hands on one of these quarterbacks that have been
taken, whether they should or not. That's probably what they would have done. But if they find
themselves in this situation, I think somebody makes a smart call to the people in the war room and says,
guys, I have to just remind you, please, we play Patrick Mahomes twice a year
and he owns us.
We play Justin Herbert twice a year.
We're going to have to play Bo Nix now.
Go find the best defensive player that we can.
Go get someone who's like a blue blood.
Lock him in right now.
Become the smartest pick in the draft.
And to me, that feels like they've already got a good pass rush,
at least some days.
So I'm going to go with Terian Arnold from Alabama.
I like it.
Not sexy, but smart.
I think it's between him and Quinn Mitchell to be the number one corner taken.
I think it sort of depends on what you want.
Corner sort of feels very specific to team need.
Mike McDonough, I don't know what his team,
not Mike McDonough,
I don't know what Antonio Pierce wants from team need.
I still don't know if Seattle already.
We're next pick soon here.
But I like it.
I mean, I think this is exactly what they would do
if it broke out this way.
They would take, they took Arnold here,
get better at cornerback,
which has been a problem for them for many years.
Now that fits really need number two for them outside of a quarterback.
All right,
Hank,
you have the new Orleans saints.
I think I know what direction they're going here.
They've been mocked to one position,
the entire draft process.
Yep.
Quarterback.
So no,
I'm just kidding.
I think so. The the saints it's pretty clearly
offensive line for me um ryan ramzik ian rapport reported earlier this offseason he had
uh surgery and might not play it seems like the team is like preparing for a future without him
and then they traded up a year or two ago for trevor penning in the first round jeff
killed it at the time he was very right it has been a big bust. So I think offensive line is a need for them. I will say, though, they only have
eight million in cap space. So possibly maybe trading down here just so they can add more
players earlier in the draft with smaller salaries that could contribute right away.
I can see the Saints like trading out of the first round entirely.
I can see the Saints trading out of the first round entirely.
But for the sake of this exercise,
I'm really tempted to go Amarius Mims just because he's awesome.
He's like the nearly 6'8 tackle out of Georgia, 340 pounds.
He only played eight games in college, but he's an absolute monster.
And I think that was similar to Penning coming out as well where it's like the really big people mover, freak athlete.
It seems like the Saints have a type there.
Jeff, is there someone on the board you like more than that?
I think with Mims, the Saints need someone sort of ready now,
if that makes sense.
I don't know if it would go Mims here.
I've been told, by the way, that Mims, to take his over prop
for his draft slot, so that would be over 22 and a half.
That would lose that wager if he went right here.
But if you want to take him, I don't see it.
I mean, look, the upside is ginormous here.
I think if it's the way it is right now,
they would take Olufashan or Fawaga.
But if you want to draft Mims or Latham even,
who's a straight right tackle in the NFL,
but Mims is not a bad selection here
if that's the way you want to go.
So what would your final pick be?
I mean, my favorite quote I've read in this draft cycle
is from one of Mims' teammates.
He's talking about how Mims' lack of playing time.
He said, you don't need a thousand reps
when you have his gifts from God.
So I say we go for it.
I say the Saints fall for the physical skills.
All right, and Marius Mims, Georgia.
He is a ginormous human being.
He makes me look small,
which is pretty hard to do.
All right.
There's a lot of tackles
left on this board, man.
A lot of teams are going to be,
I think, quite pleased
with the tackles dropping here.
All right, Gabe, you are next.
You mean Matt's next.
The Indianapolis Colts.
Feels like people have been
penciling a couple picks here.
Where are you going? The Colts, you may have been penciling picks in for the Colts. Feels like people have been penciling a couple picks here. Where are you going?
The Colts, you may have been penciling picks in for the Colts,
but this is not how we expected the draft to shake out here
in the great city of Indianapolis.
We assumed that we'd maybe be thinking about some defense,
maybe another receiver potentially,
depending on how the draft shook out.
But we see that there's one name who's really slid to this point
here at number 15,
somebody who we thought was going to be gone much earlier.
Hey, can any of you guys name the starting tight end
here in Indianapolis?
Dallas Clark.
Yeah.
Mo'Ally Cox.
There's a Woods.
Oh, Jelani Woods.
Oh, Mo'Ally Cox is there. He is the backup. An Opal Tree and a Tomlinson. You, Jelani Woods. Oh, there's a Mo Allicox is there.
He is the backup.
An Obletree and a Tomlinson.
You've named all the backups.
The starting.
Mallory and a Murray.
There's seven of them on the roster, it looks like.
Yeah.
The starter on CBS that I happen to look at is a guy named Kylan Granson.
I've been playing fantasy football for 25 years, and I've never heard of that person.
So we're going to go ahead and take the generational apparently tight end prospect at brock bowers what an addition
for anthony richardson to come back and now uh instead of having to reach for maybe the fourth
receiver on the board or something like that we're going to get the best tight end we feel great
about that here at indy yeah and by the way jeff why wouldn't denver have done that i'm still pissed
at this bow nicks pick what if brock Bowers is available past the third or fourth quarterback,
isn't everyone taking him?
Well, the history of first-round tight ends is not great, by the way.
They mostly are not doing the NFL.
That's their play role in some of this, right?
I think in the last 10, there's been one Pro Bowl guy,
and that was Njoku, right, who was there.
Hawkinson.
They also just extended Troutman.
Denver just, they need a quarterback in the worst way, man.
You can't go into the season with Stidham and Zach Wilson.
How does Bowers help them get any further than where they want to be?
That's my point with Denver.
I mean, I guess I skipped him at 13 also.
Okay.
All right.
I have Seattle now at 16.
Fairly interesting here.
They need Offa to tackle probably.
They have two guys in Cross and Lucas that are good,
but sort of had some injury concerns.
They also need Ed Rusher in sort of the worst way.
I'm going to go Leatu Latu out of UCLA.
I think he is supremely underrated, and mostly because of the injury history.
I think he was medically retired at Washington, then went to UCLA,
and is the best pass rusher on the board.
If he went to Alabama, guys, he'd go in the top 10, like, by far.
Best hands, best get-off, best finishing ability at the quarterback.
Not great against the run, so he needs to get a little stronger.
But, I mean, Holmreich, right away, he comes in, I think, guys,
and becomes an instant impact player in the National Football League.
So I'm giving them Leatu Latu.
I think they'd be pretty happy about that.
Gabe, you're on the board with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Yeah, I'm sure there'd be a lot of temptation to go for some fun weapon
like they've done the last few years to put with Trevor Lawrence.
I think calmer, cooler heads prevail,
and they go ahead and just get a great guy
they can plug in as a starter on defense.
So, you know, I'll admit to what I do
and don't know about these guys.
I don't know much, but it looks to me
like Quinion Mitchell from Toledo is the guy,
and it looks like that's who they would take
if they were in this spot.
I would absolutely love him.
He is long.
He is physical and can run.
Look, again, he's cornerback one or two, 1A, 1B with Arnold,
depending on who you talk to and who you like.
So to me, home run, if they can get him here at 17, makes their team better.
Hank, you have the Bengals here at 18.
Where are you going?
I actually had my eyes on Mitchell as well.
I think that's a good pick, Gabe.
You know, the last two years we've done this,
we've gotten the first pick right,
and then we've gotten one other pick in the draft,
and both times it was Gabe with a random,
like I think last year it was, I don't remember.
Oh, he got Will Anderson.
It was a random defensive player that Gabe somehow sniped.
And then Tyler Linderbaum.
Yeah, the Linderbaum pick goes down in history.
Whoever's paid attention the last few years to this particular episode,
you know that one guy was on Linderbaum early.
I think this could be the pick this year with Quinnian Mitchell.
But with the Bengals, I'm pretty tempted to go o-line especially because of how many of how these guys are kind of
falling but i think uh i might want to go pass rusher here i know hendrickson's been good for
them um on one side of their d-line but Sam Hubbard this year had what's called a complete deltoid reconstruction
and a tightrope procedure, which I don't know what those are,
but they don't sound great at all.
So I think they could get –
That's what they are.
Yeah.
My ankle doesn't come in the camera frame.
That's what it is.
Well, whatever it is, I think –
I'll show you my bum, all my ankle scars. Not all my fans, Jeff. I know what it is. Well, whatever it is. I'll show you my bum, all my ankle scars.
Not all the fans, Jeff.
I know what those are.
So, Jeff, do you think going Sam Hubbard replacement is smart here then?
I think they would take Murphy if in this situation wanted to go defense.
Okay, cool.
So this validates it.
You guys, he said it.
Byron Murphy, hook him.
The guy's awesome.
He's so good.
He was overshadowed playing next to Devondre Sweat,
literally overshadowed by the enormous Devondre Sweat
for a lot of the college year.
But he was kind of like the secret sauce
for Texas's defense last year.
He's so disruptive on the D-line.
He's a little undersized.
He's super aggressive.
And like, there's so many clips of him just getting low
and just pushing two dudes off of him.
He's awesome.
I read that he played middle linebacker in high school,
and they came up with a package that had him creep all the way up
right to the front of the offensive line before the snap every play,
and he was so good at it.
They were like, can you just add a bunch of weight
and become a defensive tackle?
And he said, sure.
And he's been awesome ever since.
So he's a game wrecker.
He'll be a star.
All right. him ever since so he's i mean he's a he's a game breaker he'll be a star all right next up here matt with the rams this is this is this is sean payne's first first round pick is that the story
everyone has on mcveigh's yes this is his first first round pick uh in la uh it's an important
one and uh our our shared friend peter schra, has been pretty adamant on air in columns
that if they are staying at this pick,
they are picking an offensive player,
despite the fact that I think their entire defense
needs a revamp, Aaron Donald is gone.
So I'm going to stick with Schrags,
and I'm going to take Olufesanu here.
I think that that's a pretty surprising fact that he fell,
and the Steelers must be devastated.
I'm picking next for the Steelers.
That's brutal for them.
They would love to have that in.
But yes, Ola Fajranga. Not great.
Caleb Williams, high school teammate at
Gonzaga and DC.
I think probably you could argue
second best tackle on the board, right? I think that'd be
great value for them. They obviously
put a lot of money into that O-line this offseason pretty scary rams offense if you have a dominant
o-line and a healthy stafford so we're happy with that pick here in la hey can anybody name the last
rams first round pick was it jared goff it was jared goff yeah no way yeah wow the trivia i like it um all right i got i got pittsburgh at 20 um
they need center in the worst way they also offer to tackle as well um i think they look at at
fuaga here out of oregon state uh even though they need a left tackle um i don't see him as
left tackle i think he's the best guy sort of on the board here.
You could go
defense and maybe go Wiggins,
the
cornerback out of Clemson.
I don't think they go in that direction.
I think if Fuaga is sitting here,
they would gladly take
him to help their offensive line.
Again, I don't know if I like the
fit per se, but Jones
is moving to left tackle
possibly, most likely.
So, Fuago would play right tackle, and
that's where I'm going with
the Steelers pick here.
I think it makes a lot of sense for what they want to do.
Alright,
Gabe, you are up next.
You have the Miami Dolphins. I don't
know what the Dolphins are going to do,
so good luck with this one.
Yeah, I don't have a lot of insight
into what the Dolphins are going to do.
I would say this.
I think the offense is fine.
I believe they put up 70 last year at one point.
However, I don't believe that the defense is very good.
Therefore, we are going to go with,
at least according to your buddies buddies at pff the best
available defensive player left around here which is either going to be an edge guy or a cornerback
i feel like they get at the quarterback a little so i'm going to go with the back end i'm going to
go with cooper dejan out of iowa why not jean i think it's the gene but well that's you know
i'd say it the french way the The guy from Iowa, Hooper.
I am very happy that he is being drafted.
He helps the team to squad out a lot.
I didn't want to get there.
See, I didn't want to get into certain people's beliefs about that,
but you took it there.
I mean, what are we going to do, cancel the show?
I was going to take him at Jacksonville's pick
because I think that fan base would absolutely love it.
But I wasn't trying to make those generalizations.
See, I didn't take it there.
Oh, I took it there.
You took the Jacksonville joke there.
Okay.
Before we get canceled,
because I know thousands of people are listening right now.
I was hoping he'd fill the Philly for the same reason.
It's really good for it.
All right, 22 is Philly.
It's Hank.
I think the Dolphins, very quickly,
will look to Graham Barton here if they were at 21.
They need offensive line help in the worst way inside.
He kind of picks that all for them.
But Philly here at 22.
You have Philly, Hank.
What do you got?
Yeah, I think you mentioned him earlier, Nate Wiggins.
A lot of people consider him right on the tier with Cooper DeGene.
The only holdup there is that Howie Roseman in Philly,
I don't think he's ever used a first-round pick on a cornerback
or a defensive back.
So I don't think we're going to do it there.
I'm scrambling a bit here, but I think we could go with your guy from Eugene,
Jackson Powers Johnson, to be the Jason Kelsey part two,
the long-term center of the Eagles' future.
My question, Jeff, can JPJ do the tush push, or is that just a Kelsey thing?
I think it's a Kelsey thing only.
I think he can do it.
Oh, wow. This is a curveball.
I didn't think they'd go this direction.
I'm going to have Pittsburgh locked in here with
a center, but
obviously the fit with Kelsey not
being there. They drafted Juergens a couple years ago.
The Philly pick
is interesting because corner feels like
a spot that they would almost have to take if the draft sort of broke down this way.
But look, I like Powers Johnson.
It's not a terrible pick.
Powers Johnson is going to have a first round grade for a lot of teams.
So let's put Powers Johnson in Philly.
Go Ducks.
Hank, you have the next pick too.
You have New England here at 23.
I'm hoping for back-to-back, not a terrible picks from Jeff.
That'd be awesome.
For New England, I mean, I'll make this one quick.
I think this team wants to win in the trenches.
I think Johnny Newton is the best player left on the board,
defensive tackle.
So let's go, Jerson, Johnny Newton out of Illinois.
I don't think you can go wrong drafting good players in the trenches,
and it would make a lot of sense for them to,
to want to do this.
It feels like a boring team now.
It used to be a fun team to cover just because of course,
Tom Brady,
Gabe's favorite person,
the roast,
the Tom Brady,
by the way,
this week,
Gabe,
I expect a full review next week.
Next week.
I expect a full review by the way,
buddy.
So please get on that as soon as possible.
Are you going to watch it? Absolutely not. Why absolutely not why not looks it looks like all the pay all the roasters are there kevin hart's gonna do it and um i think i saw obviously jeff ross is gonna
do it no brief story brief story uh oh boy i was i was given tickets to see it in person by someone I love very much.
And I said my response, which I learned later was not the right one, was, are you kidding me?
Like what?
I thought you would love this.
Like, why would I love a celebration of Tom Brady?
Like, no, they're going to make fun of him.
Like, no, they're not.
It's all a giant way of talking about how great he is by pretending to make fun of him.
It's a love fest for the person.
I cannot stand as a football fan.
Why would I want to do this?
And we are not going because I had such a bad reaction to being invited to go see this.
Is this a worker acquaintance or this is your wife?
A little closer than that.
Your wife got you tickets for this?
You said no?
Yeah.
I turned it down.
Wow.
Wow.
Well, have fun sleeping by yourself.
It turned out to be the wrong choice.
Listen, I have principles.
It's not about Tom Brady, the human being.
I don't want to be at a two-hour celebration of Tom Brady's career.
Here's the best part about this, by the way,
because I guarantee your wife thought to herself,
this is a great gift for Gabe.
I got him tickets for this Tom Brady thing.
Is she a sports fan?
Like, my wife has no idea.
Enough to know that this seemed like the right idea
to her so she's like i i got this great gift for gabe i'm gonna i'm gonna surprise him with these
tickets and he said yeah where's it where's it being at the the video was the form in the back
is it the form it was in l.a i don't remember well the video for the tom bradley was at the forum
the preview video so like she's like so excited you just you just
motivated i didn't handle it well and my wife is a beautiful woman and it was a very generous gesture and i did not handle it correctly my football fandom
and my principles got in the way and i just i can't support something like that so we're not
going oh my god let's hope for the uh 2400 people watching currently that uh george is not one of
them i guaranteed she's not watching this.
My wife also doesn't watch either. So we're
clear here. Hank's
wife doesn't watch either. All right.
I'm next up. I have the Cowboys here.
Hey, hold on. You got a phone
call. It's John Lynch.
Would you be interested in not getting
Brandon Ayuk for this pick?
I'll hang up and listen.
Wait, wait. Do I get that and I get 31?
No.
Straight up.
I still want 31.
I think for the show, let's do it.
I think in real life, there's just no chance the Niners get away with
without giving up 31 for this draft pick.
But for the fun of the show, to make this more interesting,
because the Niners are going to draft J.c latham here is my guess but um niners go to uh how about we let's swap it let's go to 24 because people want to hear you draft more than me so
let's have i'll take i'll move up you can have brandon iuk and uh i'll take the the sporting
niners pick at 24 how's that okay i do want to know, though, before the pick,
what is the price for...
What do you think the Niners could get back
if they're willing to trade him?
Just 24?
I mean, in this year's draft?
I think what's going to happen is teams are going to wait
until after the draft and then give up a pick next year.
And what's it going to rate?
First-round pick?
Second-round pick?
Something like that?
What did Tyreek Hill get?
A couple second-round picks?
I think it was multiple, yeah, I think.
But something along those lines, right?
So Dallas gets, and they get IUK, okay.
So they got a first.
Yeah, wow.
They got a first and a second and a fourth.
Yep.
Wow.
They got a first and a second and a fourth.
Yep.
So Dallas gets doubt and SF gets,
and then Dallas gets a,
are you kind of,
yeah. So I've said goodbye to Brandon.
I,
you guys,
John Lynch,
which means it's time to restart the clock on a wide receiver on a rookie
deal.
And we're very happy to see Brian Thomas jr.
Still on the board.
And we're very happy to see Brian Thomas Jr. still on the board.
We've basically just given away a problem that we had in IUK. We are going to have a lot of cap issues with the Brock Purdy extension that's coming.
So we're going to reset the clock on a counter to Debo Samuel.
And we're very happy to have made this move.
It seems like Jeff finds it a bit curious, but what do you think?
Brian Thomas Jr., and you get to keep your 31st pick?
Yeah, then it's a home run.
I'm willing to part with the 31st pick.
I feel like that's a pretty hardy trade there for the Niners
to be able to do all that.
So for the sake of the show, okay, we'll give you the Niners.
Oh, I'll get 31.
Oh, I'll get 31 now.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Good.
All right.
So you have the pick now, Gabe.
Look, I think that makes sense for the Niners to want to do this.
I think that's a rich trade to give up him and the first.
I don't know if they would do that exactly,
but thank you, dog, for talking to me.
Let's go to the Packers here, Gabe, at 20, 25.
Yeah, I got to admit, your dog there would probably have entered the conversation.
Yeah, I'd take the dog's insight over mine as to what the
hackers are supposed to do late in the first round.
I think in past versions of this, we've thrown some giant grenades into the draft
and take the quarterback just for the amusement.
I'm not going to do that.
They found their guy.
It's possible that Jordan Love has the juice to demand they go find him a playmaker,
in which case
someone like Ladd McConkie or something might come up one of the receivers at Texas comes to mind I
don't think they're going to do that I think we're just going to go best player available at this
spot which Jeff help me out here I mean you can never have enough good pass rushers is the guy
Turner from Alabama the right play here given our our turners or Turner's already gone buddy
where'd you take him?
With the Falcons.
Great.
So I'm that guy in your fantasy draft now.
Yes.
Okay, good to know.
I fell asleep from Denver to Jacksonville in the middle of the first round,
and I just lost track of the best names.
I'll tell you what, Jeff.
People do care more what you think than I do.
I'd like you to make this pick, celebrity pick for me. I think they would go with Graham Barton here at sort of tackle, guard, center.
I don't think he's been drafted yet.
I've been trying to draft him for like four teams now.
You talked about him.
That's why I didn't take him.
I agree.
He's not been drafted yet.
I think they'd go with Barton here
and put him at any position they need
on the offensive line to get better
and help Jordan Love is my guess
if it breaks out in this way.
So give me Barton here.
Hank, you have the 26th pick, and you have Tampa Bay here.
Yeah, and the Bucs are now all sobbing in the war room
because they thought Barton was going to fall to them.
And they were pretty confident that the guys picking for Green Bay weren't going to be able to figure that one out.
But I guess they used their phone to find well. With Tampa, I think the issue is their rushing
offense. They haven't been able to get much going on the ground recently. I like Rashad White. I
don't love Rashad White. And with the Baker Mayfield offense coming in,
we've seen I think he's better when propped up by a strong run game.
So I'm going to try to take an offensive lineman here.
This hurts me a bit,
but I think Tyler Guyton is the name that stands out on the board.
I don't typically like propping up Oklahoma players.
What about Jeff?
Is there anybody besides Guyton
that I could have a case of drafting here
that makes sense?
I mean, I think you might look at,
I don't know how much of a reach it is,
but taking a guy like Zach Frazier
to play center for you,
I don't think it's a reach at this point,
but obviously basically three centers taken
in the first round would be like historic,
but I could see that going up.
I think the best offensive lineman
on the board...
Well, Latham hasn't been picked yet either.
Why don't you just take Latham and put him...
I thought Latham was gone. I thought he was at the
Steelers. No.
He's still alive. You could take Latham here, wouldn't you?
Latham's the pick then, for sure.
Yeah, I was about to say, he's still alive.
He's still up. It was Fulaga to the Steelers?
Yes. Got it. Alright, so yeah. JC Latham is the pick there for Tampa Bay. still alive you still still up i don't it was falaga to the steelers yes got it all right so
yeah jc latham is the big day for tampa day i like i like that better that fits better awesome
um all right i have buffalo i believe next right guys um arizona oh you arizona's you
skipping arizona yeah no it's fine we all forgot arizona and we do that in the real draft can we
just skip their pick? Who cares?
Let's give them an edge rusher.
Let's give them Jared Verse.
I feel like that's a good, that's a solid play here.
Yeah, or should it be Chop Robinson?
Jared Verse is, I'd go Jared Verse probably.
Let's do it.
Good first round for Arizona, huh?
Oh, yeah.
Traded back, right? right no they have marvin
yeah i keep forgetting i keep forgetting how many trades we've made in this in this mock draft
all right jared verse um defensive uh end here um all right i have 28 i have buffalo
all right hank am i taking mitchell am i taking worthy who am i taking um this i guess the question
is do you want do you want to chase the ceiling or do you just want a guy who like after dealing
with digs for the last few years do you just want someone who will just be like chill and fun to talk
to you know not give you a headache which i think which i think is mitchell yeah you're taking
mitchell for sure yeah so mitchell what if you want to draft someone who's chill and good to talk to then
who should you take xavier worthy he just seems cool yeah and he's fast too no mitchell is awesome
he's so so talented i think the problem is like when yours is not as good as maybe his reputation
would imply um surprising that i'm saying that into a live microphone,
but there was definitely plays
where Mitchell knew
he wasn't getting the ball early
and you would see it.
He would slow down,
you know, in his routes,
even if he was open,
you know, he would
he would take plays off for sure.
And I think that was more
of a function of like his mentality
of not wanting to share the ball.
You could say he'll he'll slide
into the Stefan Diggs role
very well with that attitude.
But I mean, he's clearly an incredibly talented player.
I think if he's properly motivated, he'll be an amazing add there.
Okay. I like it.
All right, Gabe, you have the Lions here.
I don't know. Good luck with this pick.
I don't know what they're going to do.
I do.
Oh.
I've studied it closely, and it's like they need defense they need guys who are ready
to play in the nfl today we don't have to wait around for you've heard that a few times for me
but it's the truth most most with the lions so we could try to get cute and go for this guy or that
guy and upside or whatever give me kool-aid mckinstry guy can play he's been taught taught
to play at this level
he's ready to cover wide receivers at the NFL level and uh they need help so maybe they'll
keep people under 30 every now and then this season and they'll actually do more in the post
season okay I like it um Baltimore is uh who's picking Baltimore oh hey back to Hank Baltimore
what do you got uh We're going Chop Robinson.
I think the Ravens have kind of tried to get this guy with recent picks with Ojabo.
I think they took Odafe Owo recently.
But he's got the traits.
He's super explosive.
He didn't really, I think early before the last college season, he was projected to go around the top 10.
I saw him go as high.
I saw one thing where people said their commanders were going to take him in the top five but he didn't really get the production the sacks to
match up with the traits yeah matt that was that was my reaction for those listening matt made a
whole face um but i i like him on the ravens and i like the ravens to kind of maximize the skills
and the ability that it does have all right so So Dallas is my pick at 31.
Dallas was able to trade back after getting Brandon Ayuk.
For a trade we agree probably doesn't happen.
They get Ayuk and another first-round pick
in the same draft.
But nonetheless,
offensive tackle,
or offensive lineman, I should say,
is a big need of theirs.
I don't know where they end up
kind of putting these guys
because of sort of where they're situated, tackle, guard.
I don't know.
I'm going to look at Jordan Morgan from Arizona,
who I think can play inside as well,
depending on what you do with Tyler Smith.
I can also play tackle.
And he's more ready to play now than I think Tyler Guyton would be.
So I will take,
I will take,
who did I say I'm taking?
I totally forgot.
I'm taking the Jordan Morgan at Arizona here for the Cowboys.
You end up with a wide receiver and an offensive lineman.
All right.
Now I have chiefs at,
here's the question guys.
So right now there's one glaring omission from the first round
all right do you know who that would be i think i think one one mission what punter punter yes
the only player that hasn't been drafted that i think has a first round grade from most teams
is going to be nate wiggins the cornerback out of Clemson.
The Chiefs just lost Snead.
But they need a wide receiver in the worst way
because Rasheed Rice is going to be suspended
at some point this season.
They already have Trent McDuffie.
They're going to be fine at corner.
The question is, which wide receiver are they taking now?
Worthy is very fast.
But personally for me, guys, I want them to take a bigger wide receiver.
Like, they need big.
They have little.
They need big.
So I'm going to probably slightly homer this a little bit
and put Troy Franklin from the Ducks for the Chiefs with with the understanding dare you
with the understanding by the way that I think he has to get more physical
to play in the NFL at a high level like the thing he needs to work on but he is a he's a big wide
receiver like he's tall he's big he goes he goes and gets the ball bigger than other guys
in this class at this level.
I have Troy Franklin
here and
our first round is complete.
Anything we got?
Anything we did? Would it change your mind
if I told you that Worthy weighed in
at 165 and Troy Franklin
was only 176?
Troy Franklin weighed 10 pounds heavier at his pro day.
So he weighed in the 185 range at his pro day.
So you have to kind of throw that out a little bit there.
I have an actual football question.
Yes.
If we spent a month in the postseason talking about McDuffie and Snead
and that they were
the reason that the Chiefs ultimately won the
Super Bowl. We know Pat's the goat, but
that made the difference.
Then they let one of them go.
Isn't the only pick
to fix that problem?
Here's why it's not.
One is that they do a really good job of drafting
developing cornerbacks.
They have guys, seventh round picks that are starting for them.
They do a great job there.
Those guys will develop, in my opinion, right?
Also as well, guys, defense typically tends to be a little more up and down by the season.
A lot of teams don't have great defense every year.
There are some teams that obviously do, right?
We can rely on them each season.
But defense is sort of up and down.
If the Chiefs' defense is 10th in the NFL, not 1 or 2, and the offense goes back to what
it can be, they win the Super Bowl anyways, right?
They don't need a locked-down defense to win a Super Bowl.
They do if their offense can't produce.
And you add Troy Franklin here, you get yourself a cornerback maybe later in the draft or a
pass rusher later in the draft.
And I think the Rasheed Rice thing is a real deal.
He will be suspended at some point this season.
There's video evidence of the crime he allegedly committed, right?
Like, I don't know how he gets by this year without being suspended.
And if you're without Rasheed Rice, now you have Hollywood Brown,
you have Sky Moore, Darius T tony justin watson justin ross and and who aging kelsey obviously
like i mean for the postseason he's great to have and the regular season i don't know if you can
rely on him to be number one every week like if rice is not there who do you have you need someone
else that's why i think franklin or a, someone else, has to be where they go in this situation.
That's my take on what the Chiefs are going
to do. However, that being said,
the Chiefs would probably gladly trade out of this if they could
for someone who wants Nate Liggins or someone who wants
someone else who hasn't been drafted yet.
They could
trade down and pick someone else
at another time. That's my
rate on it.
All right. Well, I read on it. All right.
Seems right. I guess the big question
to wrap up on is
we know that
top 10 quarterbacks
over the last 30 or so years
don't hit that often.
When I say hit, I mean
become MVP caliber
players.
Are we in the last 30 plus years?
Yeah.
Quarterbacks taken in the top 10 picks.
Only four of them have become all pros.
Yeah.
It's hard.
Yeah.
Right.
And one of those is Peyton Manning and the other is Patrick Mahomes.
Right.
You know, I think it's Matt Ryan and Cam Newton.
Two quarterbacks would be pretty happy to end up with their careers.
But like all these other guys that we spend every March and April
obsessing over turn into average at best quarterbacks.
Yeah.
Should five or six of these guys be taken in the first 15 picks?
Well, I made this point earlier, right?
They typically get one guy in class.
Yeah.
But Gabe, if you don't have a quarterback,
you don't even have a choice, a chance to be good.
It's the bare minimum you need as a quarterback.
I think teams are going to look at it and say, like, hey, man,
we've got to get this guy because we don't have a choice otherwise.
Like the Broncos, is it better to have Bo Nix or J.J. McCarthy
or roll with Jared Sinema and Zach Wilson and hope next year
you can draft another quarterback?
That's what I think teams – Vegas.
Vegas is in a division with Mahomes and Herbert.
They're just going to be fine with rolling with Aiden O'Connell
and Gardner Minshew as their quarterbacks?
That's the pressure in the building.
And there's also arrogance from front office staff of like,
we're the difference.
It's not going to happen to us.
We're not going to fail on a quarterback.
That is the arrogance of that as well that I think drives teams
to overdraft quarterbacks.
So four and a half, I think, is the number right now.
It's juiced very high.
I would take the over.
I don't even know what it's at now, minus 250 or something.
But I've made a lot of wagers on the draft. I don't even know what it's at now. Minus two 50 or something. But I,
I've made a lot of wagers on the draft.
I think I have like 12 so far.
So it's probably too many.
I might end up with more as we go along.
I don't know.
Take your swings.
You got to see when you take,
well,
for you personally,
but also for,
even if you're drafting a quarterback and you're just not sure if it's
going to be the right one,
like you just got to,
there's,
there's no position where you can have as quick of an impact.
I think,
you know,
was,
were any of us big CJ Stroud fans last year?
Like,
look what happened to that Texans team.
All of a sudden they're just completely in the mix.
And,
you know,
I think the other thing too,
is like Jeff,
you said this earlier,
you just got to keep drafting them.
You just got to keep taking swings.
Like it's obviously pretty random. There's been 75 first round quarterbacks since manning and you know
very few of them have have panned out i i took a look at the whole list and wondered
at what the what the likelihood was that any that any of these quarterbacks would be good and it's
like about a third of them come out actually mattering of those first round quarterbacks but
if there are six picks then like there's two that are going to be awesome so you got to take your swing like it can totally
change everything about your franchise just a graveyard of commanders quarterbacks that's
all you look at it you're just like i just can't believe i wondered what the odds would be like if
caleb is going to be awesome then the odds statistically are that one more will be good
in this class maybe in the whole in the whole class
if six are taken in the first round the odds are that one more will be good if you're out of the
first round you have like a three percent chance of hitting there were there's like hundreds of
quarterbacks and i had like 10 to 15 who actually mattered depending on the thing about it even
now outside the outside the first round the nfl you have jalen Hurts, you have Carr, you have Dak Prescott, Kirk Cousins,
Wilson,
Purdy.
One Super Bowl in that group, and that was Wilson
when he was super young with a great defense.
Purdy got there.
That's an example of a quarterback just landing in the perfect
spot because Russ came out with
good playmakers and then just one of the greatest
defenses ever.
Dak's the same way.
He had the best O-line in the league for his first two, three years.
He needed a landing spot.
I agree.
All right, guys.
I feel pretty good about this one.
There's some curveballs here, but I like where we're at.
If we did this the way it worked out, I would lose a couple wagers, though.
It wouldn't be great. i have mccarthy top five i have uh mims over 22 and a half i have powers johnson to be a basic
second round pick barn under this would not be good for my this would be bad news for my mock
draft for my own wagers but uh nonetheless guys i enjoy any last words anybody
if you lose all those bets and you need to reduce your phone plan i've got you if i guys can i give
you a a non-football gambling thing real quick the best wager in all sports right now is fading
the chicago white socks run line every night I'm 11-3 doing that this season.
I have made a lot of money.
I can send you guys privately how much I've made.
Again, these are like $300 wagers, $200 wagers,
like not a ton of money on these wagers.
Like I'm going to wager more for NFL games and college games.
But like just a little sprinkle every night on the Chicago White Sox run line.
They're like 3-19 right now, and it's a lot of fun let's just take my
advice for that jeff whatever amount of money you've won i would double that amount of money
to never have to watch a single pitch of white socks baseball do you think i've watched any
white socks baseball i'm just saying okay can i give you guys watched any baseball at all this
yeah i watch baseball uh i i'm like keeping it alive by still paying for MLB TV,
even though I'm blacked out.
Four teams are blacked out.
Oh, you're the guy.
Gabe and Matt and Hank, do you ever go to Vegas?
You're probably too young to enjoy Vegas.
Matt and Gabe do.
Do you guys wager in Vegas at the kiosks?
It's like sports wager?
Yes.
Of course.
I'm going to give you one more embarrassing story
before we get out of here.
So the kiosk, when you're in that vibe, I'm going to be one more, one more embarrassing story before we get out of here. So the kiosk, you know, when you're in that, in that vibe was in Vegas the past weekend,
like you want to gamble more than you probably should.
Right.
Like you're at the kiosk, like whatever.
So I wanted a couple extra dollars to wager on crafts before I lost all of it.
Okay.
So I'm at, I'm at the kiosk.
I'm making wagers for the Lakers Denver game one.
Okay.
I see the Phillies are already up three, nothing on the white socks so i go in like
the third inning second third i'm gonna go you know what let's alternate line minus four and a
half live line for the phillies to beat the white socks i just want some extra money at the crowd
so they're up nine nothing okay after eight innings they're at home up nine nothing i i put
the like i look the score okay they're gonna win cool they-0. I looked at the score. Okay, they're going to win.
Cool.
They're going to cover.
Don't check the score again.
Three hours later, I walked to the ticket counter to hand over a wager,
a basketball wager, my new one, and the Phillies wager.
He cashes the basketball wager for me.
He puts the Phillies ticket in, minus 4.5, and goes, this didn't win.
I said, can you check again?
Like, like, like, he doesn't know.
I'm in shock.
Like, my jaw is, like, down.
I'm like, I go to my phone.
The White Sox scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning
to lose nine to five.
I've never been more embarrassed in my life to ask someone,
can you check again?
I don't know.
The sports book,
whether or not I want to,
you check again.
I,
I,
I know concept that they would have lost that way to their up nine,
nothing in the top of the ninth inning to a team that has played 20 games
and they've scored 60 runs.
So that's not someone check my commanders over from last year i'm not
sure if that i don't i don't know what happened to that one i felt pretty good about it all right
guys we've hit it we did it game i think we're 30 minutes over the time you said we had to be done
so um yeah okay and blowing up real meetings to not know the name of players i was picking in an nfl mock draft so
it has been fun and i am looking forward to the draft but a tip for all of you you especially
jeff from about pick i'd say 12 to 18 that's denver vegas new orleans indy seattle jacksonville
probably fit a whole episode of showogun into that time, guys.
That's what I recommend.
Oh, Shogun's incredible.
I'll have to correct the record, by the way.
The White Sox have played 22 games and scored 45 runs.
Oh, thanks for clearing that up.
We were 45 runs in 22 games.
Shogun's incredible.
I can't wait.
I can't wait for you to watch it, Gabe.
Matt, Hank, Gabe, always enjoy this every year.
It's a lot of fun.
Matt somehow has a phone from when his parents were teenagers in his hand.
We'll be back next week, week after.
I don't know.
We'll figure it out.
Back in a couple weeks, guys.
Take care.
Enjoy the draft.
Hope you enjoyed this.
Talk to you guys next time.
Bye, everybody.
Bye, everybody.
Bye, everybody. Outro Music
