It's Tuesday, June 30th.
Superman has landed in New England.
Tom Brady continues to send a big F you to social distancing.
And like it or not, Adam Silver has laid out the model for how the NFL can return to play.
I'm Jeff Schwartz alongside Gabe Gowen.
This is Jeff Schwartz is Smart with You.
And guys, part of the show, for those who haven't caught on yet, this is like episode 70, is that Gabe tries to rile me up by pretending to take, to be like Twitter person, right?
Like pretending to be, and he does believe some of the takes that he says.
But today, guys, today's a special day because this is not Twitter reaction, Gabe.
Twitter reaction, Gabe. This is Gabe, the Jets fan, the lifelong Tom Brady hater,
who is going to fire off takes today that are true and dear to his heart.
Gabe, first of all, how was your weekend?
Shut up. Who gives a shit about small talk? Let's get into this. Look, man, I always say what I believe,
but sometimes, yeah, I have to present the,
you know, what the internet thinks.
That's the point of the show.
I got to get into your mentions.
I got to see what other takes are out there.
This first one's going to be easy.
I'm the hottest take there is right now.
Look, my blood take level was at 17% this weekend with the cam stuff.
I was hammered on cam takes.
Everything I was saying and doing
was crazy i look back at it now i kind of blacked it all out everyone knows by now what happened cam
signed a one-year deal incentive laden deal he gets basically backup money to play for one year
in new england if he meets all the incentives he gets about seven and a half million bucks so great
deal for the patriots good for cam twitter did what it always does. Of course, no one's allowed to have any other take, but this
Belichick's a genius. Belichick's playing checkers. We're all playing chess. Why? He did
the most obvious frigging thing in sports history and signed Cam Newton to no dollars. Oh, and by
the way, he did it a few hours after getting slammed by the league for cheating for like the
millionth time. Okay. He covered up Spygate 2.0 by signing a future hall of famer and we're all calling him
genius like no one else could have thought of this this is nuts for now though i'm just gonna
shut up and let you address that unanimous and idiotic take which is that he's the genius he's
playing checkers we're playing chess because he somehow figured out how to sign cam newton when he didn't have a freaking quarterback on his roster
well the checkers and chess thing is all about how he announced this 10 minutes before the sanctions
came down for the filming of the bangles which we talked about extensively is not really that big of
a deal but they got hit pretty hard but you But it was very clear that the timing of this signing
was solely based on the bad news that was coming out.
He's only the team to talk to Cam Newton extensively,
really, at all.
The framework of the deal isn't something
that takes a lot to work on.
I mean, it's just one phone call between him and his agent
to figure it out.
And yes, this was the move that we've talked about now
as being the only move for Cam.
There's so many things to actually talk about
besides Gabe's anger about Bill Belichick
being called a genius.
Look, Cam Noon wanted to be a starter.
We talked about this a lot the last couple of weeks
with Colin Kaepernick
and kind of where his contract is slotted in.
Like, what does it mean to have a certain type of contract?
And Cam has always wanted to be a starter. And I would argue that he deserves to be a starter. I know he's? Like, what does it mean to have a certain type of contract? And Cam has always wanted to be
a starter. And I would argue that he deserves to be a starter. I know he's been hurt. And that is
a legit part of the discussion. But he is a starting quarterback in National Football League.
And there were not many opportunities to go start once Franchise played out, right? Ryan Tannehill
stayed in Tennessee. Tom Brady went to Tampa Bay. The Chargers, Bengals, Dolphins all drafted quarterbacks in the future.
There weren't many opportunities for him.
So I see people saying, well, the Bears traded for Nick Foles.
That was a stupid trade.
But it really had nothing to do with Cam because if Cam wanted to be the backup somewhere,
he could easily be the backup anywhere he wanted to.
But he never wanted to be.
He wanted to be the starter.
So New England always made sense from the fact that he wanted to start,
and they had a starting job available.
I never bought the Stidham hype.
Now, there's a lot of other things to consider with personality fit.
But the minimum, Gabe, this is why this happened,
was that Cam wanted to start, Patriots needed a starter,
and they got a great deal.
There's no doubt about it.
They got the bare minimum deal for a guy like cam noon and they do
get credit for getting this done look if cam is healthy he's easily top 15 quarterback you got
him for for 7.5 million probably has super bowl and samson i mean you know six million dollars
five million dollars you pay him for getting you 10 or 11 12 wins it's incredible value yeah no
kidding it's great value and but this is why i don't
understand like they got lucky i'm we don't need to call belichick a genius every time you know
crap falls in his lap like what what was the move here this is the only thing anyone in his position
would have done it was ridiculous to pretend otherwise like why why do we have to pretend
that they're they're doing
something special when they make the most obvious move in history and by the way all you salary cap
nerds on twitter get out of everyone's mentions shut up you don't know how this works either
it's nonsense let jeff explain that you know okay here's the reason why the patriots get credit for
a lot of these things because other teams don't do the obvious right other teams just don't do the obvious that that's why they get credit because
they tend to do the thing that makes the most sense all the time other teams routinely fail
at this we talk about the Bears the Bears trade it for Mr. Biskey and then they trade it for Nick
Foles and they got him on a terrible contract Ryan T Tannehill, the Titans, they signed him to a three-year deal for $90 million.
$90 million off of a 10-game sample size
in the regular season where he played out of his mind.
Like, teams routinely make bad contracts for their players.
But the Patriots, in this instance, did a great job.
And that's why they get the credit,
whether you like it or not.
I don't.
Because they ended up doing the easy thing to do and there's many reasons i think
why this took so long one definitely think that covid was part of it i mean i think that it just
took teams a while to see if cam was healthy or not um i do think the patriots might have had
different options in the draft and they didn't break off their draft board to figure out um you
know where they would end up getting quarterback.
And Cam just obviously ended up happening.
But I think the number one reason why this marriage makes sense,
and people say, well, how's this going to work?
How's this going to work?
Here's why it's going to work, Gabe.
They both have a shared goal.
They both have a shared goal.
They both have a shared goal to give middle fingers to everyone in the NFL, okay?
Cam Noon wants to play great in this one season
to rehabilitate his image
and then get a monster contract elsewhere.
We've seen players come to New England,
specifically quarterback position.
Well, they were drafted, but Castle and Garoppolo
and go off and get massive contracts, right?
We've seen Darrell Rivas come for a year.
We've seen Randy Moss rehabilitate himself,
who was already obviously a Hall of Famer by then.
But we see players go to New England often
to rehabilitate themselves.
I mean, Antonio Brown, for two weeks,
was a model player in New England, right?
So we've seen this happen a lot.
And Kansas has to really rehabilitate himself.
He just has to be healthy.
And that's where he's coming from.
He needs this year to go
well. And Bill Belichick wants this year to go well because he wants to give a middle finger
to Tom Brady and everyone else who says he can't win without Tom Brady. So they have a mutual
interest in making sure this goes very well. So whatever personality differences they have,
and there are very different personalities, they can come together for one year and make it work.
If this is a five-year deal game
i'd be like i i don't know if that's really gonna work for five years but for one season especially
they don't even get together till july 28th like i think that this is going to be a great marriage
for one year and he might be the quarterback of the future or he might go somewhere else next year
and get a gazillion dollars well the way my way my life works, at least my life and
football fandom, they're going to win this year. They're going to fall in love. Cam's going to
sign for 10 more years. He's going to play into his forties. He's going to get six rings. The
only positive that will come out of it is that people will say maybe Brady wasn't the goat after
all, but I'm going to have to live into my fifties without ever seeing anyone, but the frigging
Patriots win everything. That's just how it's going to be. Yeah. And he's going to have to live into my 50s without ever seeing anyone but the frigging Patriots win everything.
That's just how it's going to be.
Yeah. And he's going to play well, by the way.
Of course he is. So talk about how he'll play. Make us a little smarter here.
Because on paper, to dummies like me, you couldn't come up with two more opposite guys than Cam and Tom Brady.
So how does this work?
So I have been critical of Cam Noon's accuracy in his career.
He has not been a highly accurate passer.
Even the MVP season, he was completing about, I think, 60% of passes.
It wasn't a very high number.
But obviously his legs and his ability to make plays outside of the first, second, third read was obviously special.
He was deserving of the MVP.
So I've always been a little harsher on him than most.
And if you guys listen to this podcast enough, you follow me on Twitter,
you know that I think accuracy is probably the number one indicator of like,
if your quarterback is just kind of competent, right?
Like, is he good?
Like, can he do the job at the minimum level?
Checking right now to make sure I'm right on this.
Yeah, his MVP year, he completed 59.8% of passes.
So like, it wasn't a great year of passing wise,
but obviously he did everything else.
2018 was the first year, Gabe, in his career
where he had a pro-style offensive coordinator,
North Turner.
North Turner, fantastic OC everywhere.
He was the OC of the Cowboys in the 90s,
became a head coach.
He was a successful head coach, great OC.
He came in that year.
He was healthy the first eight weeks of the season.
Panthers were 6-2. Cam was completing almost 68% of passes. His touchdown reception
ratio was three to one. He was just getting the ball out in rhythm. He wasn't throwing the ball
as deep as he was with Mike Shula or Mike Shula's offense. It was a lot of shots. This offense was
more controlled and kind of just like streamlined.
And Cam did it.
Cam was fantastic.
So I saw enough.
I know it was only eight games to say, hey, look, if we get that Cam in New England, then they're going to be really good.
And again, we have to preface all this whole conversation again by saying if Cam is healthy, right?
Because all this can go to naught if Cam is not going to be healthy.
But let's assume he is.
The Patriots offense for years, you've seen it.
Dink and dunk, right?
Running back, wide receiver, a slant.
Oh, boom, play action pass.
Like, that's exactly what Cam's going to do.
It's exactly what he's going to do.
Now, the question becomes, how much are they going to use his legs in the offense?
And I think they're going to use it sporadically, like situationally.
The Patriots are great in situational football. I don't think it's going to use it sporadically like situationally the patriots are great in situational football i don't think it's gonna be a big part of their offense but third and
one third and two first and ten they want to take a play action shot with some weird backfield action
they're gonna do that cam probably doesn't want to run as much as he has in the past considering
that his body's been breaking down but i'll tell you this is that i was a big proponent of
like about 2016-17 say hey look cam you look, Cam, you got to stop running, man.
And Jordan Gross, the Panthers' offensive tackle for a long time, we had him on a radio show I was doing.
He goes, look, that's just who Cam is, right?
Like, Cam has got to do that.
And I started watching him more closely.
And whenever he would get a big run in the first quarter, he's just a better quarterback.
Like, that makes him a better player.
So you really can't take the run out of his game.
I don't think he can just be a guy who sits back there all day,
though, 35 times from the pocket.
He needs some sort of physical activity down the field with his legs.
And so that does fire him up.
And I think that's what we're going to get from him.
I do not think they're going to – I see people saying, like,
hey, they're going to run Baltimore's offense.
Like, they're not running Baltimore's offense.
Like, the one thing I've not really understood about the way we talk about Belichick is that he's so enamored with Baltimore.
Like, they're always like, well, he wants to beat Lamar Jack.
He wants to run that offense.
He wants to beat the Chiefs.
He's designed his team to beat the Chiefs.
That's why they have 25 defensive backs.
Like, and a pass rush.
They're not designed to beat the Ravens.
I don't know why people keep saying this.
Like, that's never been his thing. I don't know why people keep saying this.
Like, that's never been his thing.
I don't get that.
It's such an odd thing.
Like, we're so fascinated by Baltimore.
Everyone says, I saw,
the people I respect are saying,
oh, they're going to be more like Baltimore.
Really?
Like, because why?
They haven't won a playoff game in two years with Lamar.
Why does he want to beat Baltimore?
I don't really,
I never understood that game.
Why is that?
Why do people say that?
I have no idea.
Maybe just because Baltimore is the only team in the last 18-year run
that's had more than like one time of success.
I mean, I guess the Giants and the Super Bowl.
But Ravens are the only team that you could even say, quote unquote,
has ever had their number.
Chiefs have beaten them, but the Ravens have been a pain in Tom Brady's side.
I mean, Alex Smith went into New England and put up 42 points.
Andy Reid has been the person that's tortured them more than anyone else.
Okay, see, well, so there he goes.
I wasn't making the argument.
I was just guessing that people referenced a couple games with Baltimore
that made them think Belichick had something against Baltimore.
I don't think he cares either.
I agree with you.
He's focused on the Chiefs.
So let's talk about that real quick, and we'll move to the next topic.
The odds went from 25-1 to 20 to 1 for the Patriots at betting
odds to win the Super Bowl. They're still probably not anyone's favorite in the AFC because of those
Chiefs. And then they're right there with the Ravens. So, I mean, please, like, I don't want
to have to think about this, but do you now suddenly like the Patriots as a real Super Bowl contender because
they got Cam? Yeah. Yeah, right. Now, I'll tell you what, though. Their schedule, and I was on
with Colin Coward yesterday. He brought it up. Their schedule is brutal. They're at the Chiefs.
They're at the Seahawks. They're at the Rams. They're at the Texans. Niners, Ravens at home.
It's the toughest schedule they've had in all of Belichick's career. Yeah. It's a tough schedule.
You know, the Bills are better.
I think the Jets will be better.
Who knows?
So, they're going to have a tough schedule.
So, it might not be easy.
But look, Cam has done it before.
He's won a lot of playoff games.
Like, you get them in the dance, man.
And they have a chance.
Now, I think the Ravens and Chiefs are just better roster-wise.
And I think those are the favorites.
I mean, Baltimore's schedule is a cakewalk.
I mean, Baltimore's probably going to end up as a one-seat again if everyone stays healthy.
So, yeah, but I think the Patriots should be up there, yes.
All right.
Well, that doesn't make me happy.
I will say this, though.
The top four teams in the AFC, if you look at who's likely to win each division, we got some fun quarterbacks in the postseason if that happens.
We'd have Mahomes, Deshaun, Lamar, Cam Newton.
That'd be a fun bunch of guys to watch in the playoffs if it happened, even though I don't want to see the Patriots there.
Well, listen, I know a lot of people were losing their minds yesterday.
I saw you got some weird text messages with some real psychopaths in your uh context so maybe i'm gonna block a few people from texting in the
future jeff um let's move it along we can't talk about the patriots for this long without
mentioning uh his highness of course the great tom brady sorry i should be referring to him by
his new name tampa brady a few days ago got got told to chill. The NFLPA doctors basically was telling Tom and his Bucs teammates,
guys, stop working out in groups.
Spread out.
Don't get sick.
Follow the rules.
Well, I guess Tompa thought he was above the rules
and kind of flipped the bird to the NFLPA.
And the millennial who normally posts hilarious hit memes
that all of you love so much,
posted a picture of him on an Instagram story with the FDR quote, there's nothing to fear but fear itself.
Well, that did not go very well because besides it being wildly stupid and insensitive, he plays in Florida now where there's a lot to be afraid of.
Sorry, Tom, I hate to break it to you. People are worried about unemployment and sickness and death, honestly.
So it was a pretty ill-advised post.
This, by the way, is from a guy who's afraid to drink coffee and eat tomatoes.
So I don't know why COVID doesn't scare him.
Why is he so cavalier?
And why is he shoving it in the face of the NFLPA, who's just there to protect him?
What is going on?
Well, I don't know why he's shoving it in the face of the PA, but it's very clear that players aren't going to listen to the PA. They're
going to do what they want to get ready. And here's why. The NFL announced that training camp's
starting on time. July 28th, they're starting on time. So today is June 30th, right? So we have,
what, 31 days or some 30 days, right, until training camp starts.
They expect you to be ready to play when you show up.
You can't say, well, the PA told me, guys, I can't be working out with my friends.
I can't see my trainer.
I'm not ready to play.
You can't do that.
You have to be ready to play.
And players know.
Their bodies crave working out right now because they know the season's coming up.
If you're a season's veteran, Tom Brady has a routine through all his career.
Like, hey, man, this is my time.
I got to get my arm right.
I got to get my timing right.
I got to get a lot of things right.
And we heard from Ryan Jensen on Friday's episode that that's a big part of what Tom's doing right now.
He's getting everything right with his wide receivers.
He's not going to stop now.
Should you, you know, should you taunt the PA?
No.
Should you post quotes about how you don't fear anything?
No.
But I'll tell you what, I tweeted this out when I saw Tom Brady post this.
I think 99% of players feel that way.
I think 99% of them feel that they're invincible at all times.
I know I felt when I was playing.
I don't fear Gabe personally getting sick from COVID.
The numbers show that I'm probably okay.
But I would fear my parents getting it, like me giving it to my parents, I should say,
or me giving it to someone else.
So if you're Tom, he probably just doesn't even fear getting it himself.
I don't know if he's thought about everything else around him.
But I would understand if a player says, look, I'm not going to get sick.
Or if I do, I won't have symptoms.
And that's why they're out practicing getting ready
to play even though we know again i think a lot of them do feel though that you know they don't
want their family to get sick or someone close to them or obviously they don't want to pass on to
someone else i think there is that compassion involved here but i think then personally i
think like i'm good man i'm gonna keep working out but okay but isn't there something to be said for
leading by example and if tamar smith is
desperately trying to get the word out to his players to the agents of the players he's obviously
doing that for a reason i i assume that he is worried about what happens if too many guys get
sick and owners start asking some questions or start digging into some contracts like this can
lead to an ugly situation for the players at large. And Tom Brady
is the most powerful, famous player of all of them. So why not just be a good guy and go along
with the head of the PA and make life easier for all the players? Like why not just keep it to
yourself? Go work out and shut up. Yeah, I don't have a great answer for that. I mean, I think that
I think Tom just wants to flaunt that he's his
tb12 method is where this seems to always be an alternative motive right that tom like is trying
to sell tb12 but when did this happen this guy never cared about this kind of stuff and now
i think that's why he went to tampa to make memes on instagram, no. But just just the idea that he wants to be more free.
Oh, God.
Well, listen,
the only thing people liked about him
was that he was solely focused on football
and he was a football machine
and it worked.
I don't know that anyone's looking
for Tom Brady,
you know, the standup comic.
I'm not sure that's going to be
a winning formula for him.
He doesn't seem like
he's much of an entertainer.
Probably not.
But OK, so let me ask you seriously. serious question, serious question. I mean, obviously,
I'm not a huge Brady fan, but is it even fair to the guys on his team? You spoke to Ryan Jensen.
He's a veteran guy. I feel like Ryan was pretty honest with you about everything you discussed.
He maybe would speak up. But other guys, do they feel like does Chris Godwin feel like he can tell
Tom Brady, hey, man, I don't know about that. I don't know if I want to meet you in the park and throw the ball with you. I'm worried about COVID. Can he say that to Tom Brady? Isn't he putting guys in a very weird situation?
I think they want to do it.
I think they want to go work out.
I'm telling you, if I was in the NFL right now,
would I be going to like the local 24-hour fitness that's not even open and working out?
No, but would I trust that if I went to a training facility
that was still open or I went to work out with some friends?
Yeah, I would do it.
Because look, you have to weigh the risk here.
The risk is that obviously you get sick, which is not good,
and you pass it on to someone else.
Or you just get ready for the season and don't get sick.
Like, that's kind of the weight you're on right now.
And I'll tell you what, I think that I'm curious to see
how the NFL just generally treats guys that have had COVID.
Because obviously they could use it against you
in a contract situation, in my opinion.
And so they also use it against you if you're unhealthy.
So there's like this different, I mean, not healthy,
like not ready to play football when camp starts.
So there's many things to think about it.
And that's why I think again,
players just want to get ready for the season.
And I think they're invincible.
I don't think Tom should be like going out of his way to mock the PA,
especially when they backed him pretty hard to flake it.
Yeah.
The whole system has been backing this guy for 20 years.
You know,
he's been caught in multiple cheating scandals and we keep on backing this guy for 20 years. You know, he's been caught in multiple cheating scandals
and we keep on backing this guy, but whatever.
Let's move to this next topic because it ties in nicely, I think,
to the fact that the season starting on time is a worry, right?
And so the players testing positive,
maybe making it hard for the teams to open camps, maybe pushing back, you know, the whole schedule like all of this is a domino.
Right. So Tom Brady not getting sick is what gives us the opportunity to play football in September, which is what we all want.
So so let me bring it to you. You know, I got to ask this probably every week until we actually see some football on the field.
every week until we actually see some football on the field.
Are we sure the season's going to happen?
And I'm going to bring up Adam Silver, head of the NBA,
who had some pretty extensive thoughts about how they're moving forward.
On Friday, he spoke to a bunch of reporters and he said, quote,
we believe we've developed a safe and responsible way to restart the season.
We are left with no choice but to learn to live with this virus.
No options are risk-free right now. We can't sit on the sidelines indefinitely. We must adapt. So pretty strong statement from Silver.
Not something everyone loved to hear.
But if I'm Roger Goodell, I am copy pasting and making that my statement.
It's my turn.
That's the only way to play it, right?
I am surprised that Adam Silver said this.
Like I truly am because when I think of Adam Silver,
I don't think, you know, kind of strong take like this, right?
I mean, I feel like there's something that Goodell would have said.
You'd be like, yep, this was something that Goodell would say.
This is what I've said for a long time, Gabe.
I've said this since March that I think we'll get football back because of the reasons he said.
Like, life kind of has to continue.
And I'm hoping that football comes back because that means that life is sort of continuing on.
And Adam Silver's right.
The money has got to be made for the league.
And they have to go about doing it in the safest way possible.
The NFL's in the same boat.
The NFL wants to play.
The players want to play.
They're going to find a way to get it done. They like i said they said july 28th man we're starting on
time so um they're they're gonna try to do the best they can to make sure that this happens on
time and the same way possible i'm glad silver said this i'm gonna have to say it for once
you know my whole thing has been like what is is, and I tweet this out and, you know, everyone
gave different responses and I showed you guys the tweets on Friday.
You know, what is the appropriate time to come back to sports?
What's appropriate time?
And there is no great answer.
Like you can't wait for a vaccine, right?
Because that might take forever.
And then it's not always effective.
People might not take the vaccine.
Like what is the time to come back?
There's not a great time.
Because, look, guys, we have not flattened the curve and it's not going to be flattened.
It's not happening in this country.
Do you agree, Gabe?
Well, I mean, it might flatten just naturally over time.
But right now, it's not going to flatten for the next two or three months.
We as a country are not showing a lot of ability to flatten the curve.
I'll just leave it at that.
Right.
Okay.
Well, I mean, you can look at it.
I know, but I mean, I think that there's some things within our control and some things
that are not.
And in some areas.
Well, there are things within our, right, but sure.
But it's just people don't do what they have to do.
Collectively, we're doing masks on our faces.
That's right.
Right.
Right.
Wear your mask, everybody.
So, like, there's no, like, you can't say, like, well, wait till we flatten the curve.
I mean, I guess theoretically you can, but when is that going to be?
We're getting to flu season soon.
Like, when is flattening the curve?
We're supposed to have a second spike.
We're not even out of the first spike yet.
So, like, when is flattening the curve going to happen?
So, I think these terms, they're great to say.
It's great if you want to wait until the vaccine. It's great if you want is fighting the curve going to happen so i think these these terms that do great to say it's great if you want to wait to a vaccine it's great you want to find the curve but we in my
opinion we've lost that ability to say that because we didn't do it as a country so you got to start
doing something at some time and they're doing the bubble they're going to test they're going to make
it work best as possible nfl will do sort of a bubble each team will have their little bubble
during training camp if they come up with a test game that you can get back like quickly,
like a saliva test,
which we're talking about trying to do.
I mean, you can test everyone
when they show up in the morning.
If they test negative,
you let them in the building.
And if they test positive,
they're on COVID-R for two weeks.
Like, I don't think it's that tough
to manage that part of it.
Well, no, maybe not.
But you're talking about adding some serious testing steps that don't exist yet.
I think the problem, Adam Silver was surprisingly blunt, right?
Like you said, he almost sounded like Roger Goodell with the matter of fact way in which he sort of just laid it out for people.
Like, hey, it ain't perfect, but this is the plan we're going with.
But to their credit, I feel like they've come up with a very robust plan
this bubble notion is is like futuristic and it may or may not work he's acknowledging by the way
i mean i should mention a few other things that he said um he admitted the plan could get derailed
and the season could get canceled or suspended midway through like that's a reality he knows that
um he but they designed their their whole campus and their whole testing program around trying to keep things going as long as possible.
Do we feel like at this point, with every few days of updates, the NFL has put in place enough plans to at least try to match the NBA's level of intensity if it wants to just say, hey, we got to go for it?
I mean, I think they've done the most realistic they can do. And again, I've talked about this a lot.
I'm not sure that the stuff they've outlined is even actually plausible.
Like the social distancing stuff, they call it physical distancing.
In the facilities, there's no room, Gabe.
There's no place to actually do it.
So my point about, I'm hoping in a month, and I know people are working on like a saliva test to try to get this back faster,
people are working on like a saliva test to try to get this back faster is that you know you're basically in the facility itself you wear your mask but you don't really actually physically
distance very much i mean ryan talked about on friday like there's you know the locker room
let's say has 65 stalls right because you have the active roster you have the practice squad you have
injured guys i'd say 70 70 stalls well look for 70 guys you don't need
70 shower heads you got 20 shower heads like you don't need a you don't need a ton so what
where are you gonna put those more other showers where are you gonna put the other guys like there's
just no room for this so that's why i think that i hope that there's a test available quickly that
you can get guys back and if they're negative then you go there can i ask you something did
you in any of your contracts that you signed did you ever have one of those things like,
oh, you can't ride a jet ski or you can't go hunting or whatever?
I don't have one on my desk.
Because some guys are known to have pretty dangerous hobbies.
I don't think there's an actual language in the contract
that states out each individual thing you can do that can get you injured.
I think it's much more of a general clause about getting hurt outside the facility.
Okay. But so let's just say that I'm a NFL player and it's provable that I went to Cabo and was partying and I got COVID because I was in a place I shouldn't have been. And I got sick doing
something that was inadvisable by everyone involved. And then I shouldn't have been, and I got sick doing something that was inadvisable
by everyone involved.
And then I not only got sick, but I got my teammates sick.
If that were to happen, would owners look into trying to void a contract?
I think they would.
Well, I really hope that doesn't happen.
I think they would find guys or look to void a contract.
They could.
I mean, they could make it a team rule like, hey, you can't go to the club this year.
I mean, it's possible they could do that.
How are team rules enforceable?
Fines?
Teams have snitches everywhere.
Yeah, you fine people, yeah.
So that's allowed within the CBA?
I don't know about if it's allowed.
I'm just saying that's something they could think about doing.
Teams have snitches?
What does that mean?
Oh, the teams know when you're going out and stuff yeah yeah
but like what do you mean like there's like foreman like no like like if you weren't allowed
to go to the bar they would probably know if you went to the bar that's something that just there's
and don't talk to me drinking a usc mug in my in my presence i went it's a free USC mug why what's wrong with that
been had this for a few seasons burnt it on my stovetop actually
this is not a USC free podcast you know what I think Jeff you've given me a very natural
segue to our moving the line segment which uh centers this week around around the team across town, the UCLA Bruins,
who have a little bit of a problem right now.
And maybe their problem, maybe Under Armour's problem.
I want to know odds we see Under Armour logos on UCLA jerseys this year,
over under 50%.
Oh, I think under.
They're getting out of this.
They're trying to get out of Cal's deal as well.
But to your point, they've re-upped with teams recently,
and they're continuing deals with other brands.
Their stock price is not good, so there is a chance that they are going under.
The only thing I'm worried about Under Armour, I never really understood this,
is they went like super hard into the apparel college sports side.
And they went hard with Steph and Jordan Spieth and Harper and I think Tom Brady and Cam Newton.
They went hard.
They gave out a lot of money.
And they never had like the market share of what the Nike had.
Look, I think Under Armour's apparel is fine.
Actually, I like their apparel.
But Nike's shoes are far and above better than Under Armour.
It's not even close.
I mean, hold on.
You're an Oregon guy, so qualify this a little bit.
I think you have to say that.
No, Under Armour shoes are not very good.
Do you wear Under Armour shoes?
No.
I mean, I wear Under Armour.
No.
No, of course not.
But I wear Under Armour clothes.
No, their apparel is fine.
It's the shoes.
Right.
I don't think UCLA wears them.
I think Under Armour is in trouble.
I think that they should go with
either Rydell, New Balance.
I saw something
today of LA Gear that should
sponsor them. Oh, I like that.
Something like maybe
Lululemon. Something very West Coast.
Oh, that's interesting. As an
SC guy in town here, you're
more of a ucla
leaning guy i think lulu lemon is very appropriate i think that'd be a good match for the team up at
westwood there uh the gutty little bruins wearing lulu lemon it'd fit pretty well wouldn't it yeah
i sort of skipped over the facts of this which are that under armor is pulling their deal it's a 280
million dollar 15 year deal to sponsor all of UCLA athletics.
They are claiming, people don't really think there's much to this claim, but they are claiming
that UCLA is not living up to their end of the deal. Seems a little hard.
Well, okay. I'll tell you why they're not, in my opinion, because they suck at football.
And I bet Under Armour thought they'd be better and they would be getting more Bruin fans to buy their gear.
More Bruin fans to be excited about buying UCLA stuff.
Now, their basketball program is moving up.
Mick Cronin did a good job this year, but Chip hasn't done a good job yet.
And I think that, I don't know what the contract details are, but I could see Under Armour saying like,
hey man, yeah, they're really not doing a good job of selling the gear we thought they would. Again, I don't know how they're able to avoid the contract, but that's for them to figure out.
Well, so do you think the fact that people are hearing that maybe teams out West might not play this year
could explain why you sort of mentioned it?
Under Armour seems to be staying in their deals with teams across the South and Midwest.
And you mentioned a few of them, Texas Tech, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Auburn.
the South and Midwest. And you mentioned a few of them, Texas Tech, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Auburn.
They want to get out of the two deals in California, but they're willing to stay in the deals in other places. Could it just be that they think they aren't going to get any bang for their
buck? They're going to miss a whole football season. And could this be an indication that
people who know, know football isn't happening in California? A lot of the spikes right now
in our country are happening all over the
place. They're happening in the South. They're happening in California. As we're recording this,
Arizona just closed bars, nightclubs, and gyms again, and they pushed back to start a public
school. So everyone's kind of, I'm just like so, just, this up bothers me.
Like we just totally blew this, America.
It's so sad, right?
Like we just totally – We can do a whole other show on how bummed we are about it.
We just totally blew this.
We just totally did.
I think we're going to see football out west.
I think if the SEC is going to play the Big Ten –
and we've seen very few tests
by the Pac-12 schools that are already back. Colorado
had four. Oregon State has had two.
To my knowledge, Oregon has had zero.
The Washington schools have not had any.
Those are places that
have stressed wearing a mask, keeping
apart from each other. They haven't opened everything up yet.
Arizona, to my knowledge, none of the kids
there have tested positive yet. I'm not
sure everyone's reporting all this.
Look, they're doing a good job out west.
I think they're going to play.
I think Under Armour just didn't get the bang for the buck with UCLA not being good at football.
Okay.
Well, you kind of got it.
What I really wanted to get at was whether or not we were going to play some football in California.
So good luck to Under Armour and all the people they do business with.
That sounds messy.
I'll move to the next topic.
Take a deep breath here, buddy.
Snaps Jordan Love takes with Aaron Rodgers on the field together with him this year.
Over under.5 snaps.
I think we will see.
I'll go over.
I think one time this year.
We'll see at least one time.
It's going to happen.
You think we'll see it happen?
Okay, because Brett Fav yeah totally packers legend says he thinks that the packers should use uh jordan love their rookie first round quarterback pick uh in a tasem hill
role tasem hill of course your favorite player in the nfl uh the guns tasem hill you love tasem hill
uh the gunslinger said quote use him as a halfback a halfback pass but
occasionally let him run it just to show that you'll i can't even read brett farr what the hell
is brett farve talking about here's how here's what brett farve had to say use him as a halfback
a halfback pass but occasionally let him run it just to show what he can do something like that
that's the gunslinger for you that's how complicated football is in Brett Favre's mind. Brett Favre's saying they should do it. Why shouldn't they do it?
You're over under is half a play. They will do it one time this year. Yes.
Jeff, this is for you and your buddy Colin Cowherd. My buddy too.
Percent of football fans who misuse the term arm talent over under 75%.
All of them misuse the word arm talent now to be fair
to colin he his graphic department kind of screwed him he said it was like top five you'll play to
know the best catchable ball but even then pat mahomes wasn't on his list if you don't put pat
mahomes on any top five list top five best things about a quarterback. The list is not right.
Pat does everything well.
But everyone uses arm talent wrong.
And people are like, oh, Josh Allen, arm talent.
Yeah, sure, he can throw a freaking missile,
but he can't hit anyone with that missile.
Bill's fans, by the way, are starting to piss me off.
Why, Gabe, are they so excited about a guy who can't complete the ball?
Like, they're so excited they're so far behind.
His job is to take a football, I don't have a football with me right now,
right there above my head.
Why don't you throw that pen?
Throw that pen somewhere.
Yeah, so I stop cooking it.
Take that football
and throw it to someone else.
He can't even do that in a high rate.
Why are they so excited about him?
So you're saying that's not good arm talent?
No.
Tim, can you,
I'm being serious now.
I'm not trying to troll you.
Define arm talent, please.
Because I don't know what the hell
people are talking about either.
I don't know why people use that term.
I think there's like the ability
to just obviously throw the ball long and far.
I mean, people use that for arm talent,
but I just think it's the ability
to throw a catchable pass,
like throw the ball where it's supposed to be.
Where it's supposed to be every time
from different angles.
So be a quarterback. Just be a quarterback. That's what we're saying when we say no no but there's okay when you see like pat mahomes throw a ball versus jared goff it's very clear that pat
mahomes has more zip on the ball it's crisper it's more consistent like that's easy to tell
in my opinion who's got them other than pat mahomes just so i can start to understand this
definition who's got the second most armed talent Mahomes, just so I can start to understand this definition,
who's got the second most arm talent around?
I hate saying like Aaron Rodgers, but I kind of- Ah, it's Aaron Rodgers.
That's what I was going to say.
I kind of think it's Aaron Rodgers.
It is Aaron Rodgers.
Some of the throws-
By what you're telling me.
If you go back and look at his Super Bowl season,
some of the throws he made were just out of this world.
World-class arm talent.
I agree.
Yeah.
All right. last couple here these ones are uh no longer making us any smarter i would like to know the second jeff
schwartz beats our buddy pft from pardon my take fame in a 20 mile bike race over under 59 second
win for jeff so okay set the parameters first. I saw this earlier. I was wondering, is it on the
Peloton? Is it on the open? No.
You're out on a real bike. None of this bullshit
Peloton nonsense. Am I riding a
mountain bike or am I riding like a Lance Armstrong?
You're riding the same
bike. It fits you both, but it's the same type
of bike. I don't know what you're more comfortable
with. I would assume you want
to be on a road bike. The reason why
I beat him in pelotons because
i can ride higher resistance for longer i feel like this obviously you're a big boy i feel like
the street bike would eliminate that so i have a feeling that's right so i think i would be under
59 seconds i think he might beat me so if i if i say no more inside crap where you he's you're
both going 30 miles an hour but you're pushing like, I don't know how much power with so much resistance.
And he's a small guy.
He can't push much power at all.
So you end up winning by Peloton standard.
Yes.
If you were out on the road, he would have smoked you.
Probably, yes.
Because what does he weigh?
180 pounds or something?
Whatever.
He drinks a beer afterwards.
I don't know how he does it.
I have no idea how he does it.
Yeah, I did see him chugging he goes he goes in celebration in his
bathtub he chugs a beer after every after every race yeah that's the opposite thing i would want
to do after a workout i just drink i i just i'll go right to the water buddy yeah hey by any update
on your uh kegerator you got a kegerator no we want two fridges two fridges two fridges but it's
been great there's some beers back there if I come over.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
What beer?
Oh, you want Bud Light, right?
Bud Light.
Bud Light?
Bud Light.
Bud Light, please.
Oh, yeah.
Or Bud Light Seltzers would be great.
That's been my new kick.
It's very California of you.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Do you have White Claws too?
You just like...
Yeah, sure.
Yeah.
I'll have a White Claw.
No problem.
Black Cherry is my favorite flavor for both of those. I't don't much like the lime it's not so coming from you
it's not very surprising you're very california now thank you thank you um all right last one
and be honest okay i don't know if you saw this question coming i want you to be as honest as you
can possibly be your wife doesn't listen so don't. You're not going to get in trouble. Correct. Times Jeff peed in his own pool this weekend.
Over, under four and a half times.
I did not pee in the pool this weekend.
Come on.
Seriously?
The reason why, I almost thought about peeing in the pool, but the reason why I haven't
peed in the pool yet is it's not totally cured yet.
And I was worried that the pee would like discolor the pool.
Infect your whole family.
Yeah.
So I haven't done it.
I thought about doing it. I'll tell you what. Oh, discolor the pool. Infect your whole family. Yeah. So I haven't done it. I thought about doing it.
I'll tell you what.
Oh, discolor the pool.
Yeah.
Like the tiles?
No, like just like the coloring of the water.
Like it's easy to see if I pissed.
The purple circle.
You didn't want that.
The purple circle, yeah.
The one that they put grownups.
It's like I've never seen any other movie.
First time Jeff got a movie reference was from the movie Grownups, which I don't even think I have seen, but I know the purple circle.
Yeah, I got one finally.
No, I'll tell you what, my son's favorite thing to do in the absolute entire world is pee outside.
Like he loves, so whenever he has to pee, it's like he wants to go, like just go in the dirt, like whatever, man.
He absolutely loves peeing outside.
Now, once the pool is treated properly and you have all the right chlorination and everything, then it's your pool.
You just pee freely?
I probably will, yeah.
Yeah.
The question is, like, have my kids peed in the pool yet?
I'm not sure they realize they can do that yet.
That they can do it or that they can stop from doing it?
Because I'm positive your kids have peed in your pool. I don't think they have because they always do it or that they can stop from doing it because I'm positive
your kids have peed
in your pool.
I don't think they have
because they always ask
to get,
they pee a ton.
They ask to get out
all the time to go pee.
Maybe they're asking
to get out
to go number two.
I think they're going
number one in your pool.
I don't think they,
I don't think they realize
that that's sort of allowed yet.
I'm,
I don't feel like that's,
I think you've been told
when it's not allowed.
I think until that moment, you just let it rip.
It's funny you mentioned the pool.
So, you know, I have an Instagram account.
It's at Jeff Schwartz.
And, you know, I post football stuff on there and, you know, put some cooking stuff on there.
I mean, most times, like, I do this pancake of the day thing, right, where I post, like, a cool offensive line block.
You know, I'm getting, like, you know, 3 know 3 000 views here's one that has 4 800 views it's got 160 shares you know like when
you send it to someone else and it's a good thing i just posted a video of my wife in her bathing
suit flipping it's gotten more views than anything that i've done with football wise it's weird how
that instagram works uh it's not weird it's exactly what it would
have predicted and uh the only thing you could do to get more likes and shares would be to just
focus in on your wife's feet because people on the internet are gross so wait feet's a thing
oh yeah man i think i've told you this before feet are definitely a thing you have a you have
a lovely wife uh obviously you know you guys are playing around in the pool. You know, people want to watch that twice, I guess.
Fine.
But if you made it a focus on feet, it could be even.
So mid-flip, I stopped her and just zoomed in on the feet.
I mean, I would get Rex Ryan to look.
For sure you could.
He's not alone.
Trust me.
Feet.
Feet are a thing.
Jeez.
I got my first pedicure this week.
You could be in for some extra views. Just show your feet off. Speaking about feet. Speaking about feet. It was an interesting experience. I kind my first pedicure this week. You could be in for some extra views.
Just show your feet off.
Speaking about feet.
Speaking about feet.
It was an interesting experience.
I kind of liked it.
I might go again.
It's weird that now of all times is when you chose to get a pedicure.
I feel like even if I liked pedicures, I would be sitting that out right now.
My wife's birthday, we went.
We were six feet apart.
We were two separate, you know, chair, open chair, chair.
There were like dividers.
Everyone was wearing a mask.
Okay.
How long did it take?
Am I picturing like Dumb and Dumber, like when they chisel your toes down?
They did bring out like a Dremel type saw.
Like, I mean, a Dremel type grinder, like to do my toenails.
Which one?
Your big toes?
Yeah.
Like fungacy? Yeah. Yep. I bet. Do you have do my toenails. Which one? Your big toe is like fungus-y?
Yeah.
Yeah, I bet.
Do you have all your toenails?
I would have felt like you lost a few of those years ago.
I have them.
They grow back gross, but most of them have fallen off now.
Yeah, because I mean, I was never an offensive lineman in the NFL, clearly.
I run a lot and my feet are pretty disgusting.
So I can't even imagine what yours must look like.
They're terrible.
I mean, I could send you a picture if you'd like.
I think I would.
Now I know you like feet.
Not just me, Jeff.
Oh, man.
All right.
Well, this is going to definitely be cut out.
So I think we've run our course today on the podcast.
Gabe, Zuri.
Everyone enjoyed it as usual.
Thank you guys for listening, for watching.
And football's back.
It's happening July 28th.
We're going to training camp.
And the Patriots game are winning the Super Bowl.
Sorry, sorry.
Sucks to be you.
All right, everyone.
Have a great week.
