it's wednesday september 7th i'm jeff schwartz alongside
gabe gill and this jeff schwartz is smart you're powered by the varsity
podcast network and we have a weekend of college football in the books five
straight days we will talk about the wins and losses of the weekend as we
look forward to the nfl season starting tomorrow
and gabe we have made it we are here football back. And I am very happy about most of football,
most of football, not all football, but most of football being back.
Yeah. Football is back in general, across the country.
The memo I don't think arrived in Eugene, Oregon, that football is back.
Your ducks flew to Atlanta to play at a quote-unquote neutral site in front of the Georgia
Dogs fan base and got absolutely blasted. And that'll get us right into this first take, which
is I know you've watched and re-watched this game. I know you have a lot invested in Oregon and
figuring out what went wrong there. I want to ask about the Pac-12. I want to ask about Georgia and
another season where we already know who's going to win.
But start with why people shouldn't freak out about Oregon, because I think most people did.
I mean, if only we could open up with Rice and have three tip-pass interceptions for touchdowns.
I mean, if we had that option, maybe we would be ready to go.
You have every option available to you.
You guys tried to be big shots and go to georgia to
play georgia week one i'm fine i'm fine with uh organ playing that game um i was in atlanta this
weekend it was a lot of fun it's funny man i took my kids you know looking forward for two years
they had the best time i mean and it's like 35 to 3 and my eight-year-old son turns to me and goes, Daddy, I don't think Oregon's going to win this one.
And he did it in the most, like, sweet, like, innocent kid voice possible.
Like, not even angry, just like, Dad, I don't think Oregon's going to win this one.
I'm like, you know what, buddy? You're very perceptive.
So Oregon out there has this kick 49-3.
I've watched this game. I've talked about it.
You know, the overriding thing that for me as an Oregon fan is, you know,
we went to the title game in 2010 and 2014.
My 07 team was maybe one of the best ones we've ever had in history,
and Dennis Dixon got hurt and would have played a not-so-good LSU
or Ohio State team in the championship game that season.
We were second in the country when Dennis got hurt. 2012,
that might have been Chip Kelly's best team he actually had. One block away
in the Stanford game from going to another BCS championship game against Notre Dame
did not happen. And I want us to win a championship. But Gabe,
it's never going to happen right now. We're not even close to winning a championship.
Take out some of the bad play that we had
that I would imagine we would not see next time in this game.
We're not close.
Not even remotely close.
And Oregon's recruited well according to the recruiting services.
Like, it's not like we, our blue chip ratio is above 60%.
Georgia's is like 80%.
Alabama's is 89%.
Like, we're supposed to have players.
We're supposed to have players on defense.
They're supposed to be first round draft picks.
It didn't look like it.
And we got physically dominated by Georgia,
especially Georgia's offense against our defense,
like manhandled.
And people said to me, oh, make adjustments.
What adjustments do you have to get your ass kicked?
The answer is none of them.
There are no judge adjustments.
And I give Georgia credit.
They did have the schematic advantage because, you know,
Dan Lanning came over from Georgia, a head coach,
and he knows what they're going to do.
He doesn't know the adjustments, right?
Because if you read some of the beat writers that cover Georgia,
they said this offense looked different than they've ever seen
under Kirby Smart.
So the offense came prepared to handle Oregon's defense,
which they did.
That does not excuse how many open guys there were.
It doesn't use getting run over on the edge, not tackling Washington,
all the terrible things we saw in defense.
It was atrocious.
I was shocked, man.
Again, we have a cornerback that the night before game,
I was reading a mock draft from Jordan Reed, I believe it was.
12th overall, Christian Gonzalez, Noah Sewell, 27th overall,
our middle linebacker.
We have two defensive linemen that are supposed to be picks in the second round and another linebacker who might be a high track.
We have all these things where we're supposed to be better on defense.
Offensively, it actually wasn't that bad.
I know the three points seem like that's an odd thing to say,
but I watched it.
So the first three drives game, 22 plays with six first downs.
So we're moving the ball down the field.
The first drive ended with a drop pass.
Third and three, like we got the ball at 25.
Actually, it was like the 12-yard line.
We got all the way almost to midfield, dropped the ball in third and three.
Second drive, again, moving the ball down the field,
Bo Nix throws a 50-50 pass to a 5'8 wide receiver who was not open,
and the corner made a great play.
He made a great catch.
I would not have thrown the ball.
Great catch.
And the third drive of the game, we're inside the Georgia 30,
29-yard line, and Bo Nix throws an atrocious interception on a pump and go.
The safety was not fooled at all.
We moved the ball fine.
We had two running backs average over seven yards of carry.
I know that face you're giving me.
Go watch, man.
It's our quarterback killed us, which is what I said previewing this game.
It's like Bo Nix, it's not good.
I just don't expect a guy who's been okay for three years to automatically be good all of a sudden.
Like, I just, and it just was bad.
I mean, again, the offense did not,
where we scored three points, I get it.
But there's a lot more positive takeaway.
Guys were open.
There was a play later in the game, too.
We had a guy wide open,
and Bo Nix had the whole entire side of the field
to throw the ball to.
It threw right to the safety.
I'm like, what are we?
Oh, what are we doing?
So we'll be fine offensively, but defensively, man, it was a shock.
And again, I go back to this idea that like, I don't think we're a championship worthy
team this year.
I didn't think that.
But buddy, I mean, like that doesn't that means USC is not close.
That means Utah is not going to be right close out west to winning a championship anytime soon.
The boys at Georgia are just different, man.
They just physically took it to Oregon.
And again, Oregon's going to win nine games this year, Gabe.
They're not a bad team.
Yeah, okay.
So you just opened up a couple more interesting topics then.
One take that everyone had, including me, was,
oh God, the Pac-12 is completely doomed because utah also lost uh utah starts the season with the rank that everyone always would say
well yeah the problem was they started a pre-season and we weren't getting any respect
and then we could never catch up to the big program well utah started as seventh ranked
team in the country and a lot of people were picking them and they lose to seventh-ranked team in the country, and a lot of people were picking them. And they lose to an unranked team.
Oregon gets blasted.
SC did look pretty good, but as you point out, against Rice, who cares?
I mean, the Pac-12 is ending one day soon.
We know that, but it feels like it's over already.
Well, look, the Utah thing is more frustrating, I think,
from the standpoint they should have won that game.
They had a postgame win expectancy of 66%.
They had two drives in the fourth quarter,
excuse me, the second half, first and goal,
and scored zero points.
And I still think Cam Rising was in on third down.
I mean, that's getting the weeds of the game.
But Utah was right there.
Anthony Richardson, though, whoo, legit, buddy.
He is good.
He will be drafted in the top 10.
I mean, his size and his strength and his ability to throw the ball in the run.
I mean, these are things, again, you don't have to be great in college to go in the top 10.
We've seen that now year after year.
Do you have the physical skill set?
Do you have the coachability to get to the NFL and have a coach coach you up?
Right?
Like, that's what it comes down to.
Anthony Richardson has that skill set.
He looked incredible.
But again, even as we said, Utah should have won the game.
And the hard part about the Pac-12 is, you know,
you don't get the fortune of losing many games and be considered a top dog.
So for example, Georgia loses one game.
They're in the playoffs still, no matter what.
They're in the playoff this season. They're in the playoffs this season.
They're in.
Alabama's in.
Those are the two best teams in the country.
Maybe Ohio State's three.
Clemson did not look terribly great last night.
This is a big drop-off from Alabama and Georgia.
And so, if you're Utah,
and there was talk about Utah being a playoff team,
you know, they lose one Pac-12 game,
they're not in now.
Because you're not getting a two-loss Pac-12 team.
And they had to win this game to be in the playoff.
And I think USC is not going to run the table either.
So they're not going to be in a spot to be a playoff team either.
So, I mean, after week one, you're kind of eliminated.
But then again, I mean, Clemson's not going to be in the playoff,
I don't think, either, if they play that way,
at least offensively, the rest of the season.
So you're looking, again, at the same, like, four teams in the playoff.
Alabama, Georgia, you know ohio
state and you know you'll get like uh maybe a baylor or you get i think even there's a possibility
that you know a notre dame can can win out i don't i just it's not it's not great i'm gonna put i'm
gonna put a team in front of you yeah because i i watched the quarterback play so the richardson at florida
was impressive but uh this kid kj jefferson at arkansas feels like arkansas might yeah might be
the team that we're still talking about and yeah but they i think they're in the division with like
alabama like they're just not they're just in a and that's it comes that hurts it just comes down
to again like the talent accumulation of georgia and alabama i mean think about this the week we we
considered the weak point of georgia to be their quarterback who threw for 300 yards and was eight
for eight on third down against oregon like that's their weak point of their team they had that freak
show at tight end six seven 240 like they just have the o Dude, we had Oregon players getting juked out by little white Georgia wide
receivers.
Okay.
Like these dudes are just everywhere in this team,
man.
And so,
you know,
yeah,
Arkansas,
I like Sam Pittman.
I like what he's building there.
The good one against Cincinnati,
Katie Jeffries.
He's I picked them to win this game for this reason.
The way he was able to return off a good year last year.
I like what they're doing in Arkansas,
but they're just not going to be good enough to play a schedule,
a week in and week out, that involves in that division.
I'm going to find the exact who they're playing in their division.
But, yeah, so they have Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, A a&m lsu msb state is not half bad like
they're not going to run through that division so um to me it's alabama georgia and and the rest
all right well then you mentioned one of the teams that's definitely not
uh in the good corner right now which is lsu so brian kelly shows up shows up. Hard to know what accent he'll be speaking in these days, but
they lose. People are not happy. A lot of jokes at Brian Kelly's expense. I'm in Notre Dame
country right now. They couldn't be happier with seeing him fail. I guess the question is like,
how long does this guy get to try to figure things out at LSU?
Or is he under more pressure than another big name coach would be just because of the way this all rolled out?
Are you still not home yet?
I'm never going to be home, Jeff.
I'm never home.
I haven't been home in like two months.
I feel, I feel your pain, buddy.
Yeah.
He'll figure it out.
I think he's a good coach.
He was good at Notre Dame.
You know, his, just the way he talks about his players it's just kind of
rude i i feel like you know this old school mentality of tearing down players publicly
is not really endearing anymore i'm not sure it ever was but the players never had a recourse
right like you could your coach could tear you down all that you wanted you couldn't transfer
you to sit out of here now and i'm not saying this is a good or bad thing,
but this is what the sport is now, where, like, Gabe,
if I come out and say, you know what?
I think Gabe Goodwin is a shitty-ass player who can't catch the ball.
You're like, all right, deuces.
I'm out of here.
Peace.
And you just go find another school.
And so him talking like that, and he might want this kid to transfer.
The point of it, too, is sometimes these coaches want these guys to leave.
But that being said, it's still not a good look and not endearing to your team
when you're calling out players after a tough week one.
Well, okay, so then they do have some great players, some guys who perform well.
The quarterback, though, I watched him at Arizona State.
I'm just not like – I'm not sawing Jane Daniels, though.
So what about this kid?
I hope I'm saying his name right.
Kayshaun Booty, Boutte.
He's the wide receiver.
He's the one that he was –
Yeah, exactly.
So he's the one who did your favorite thing.
He took all LSU stuff out of his Instagram profile.
So obviously that means something, right?
Yeah, it means that
he's obviously leaving. There was a fake
Brett McMurphy tweet yesterday about him transferring
out. This is so juvenile, dude.
So juvenile.
Do you think...
Let's just wait and see
on these players who transfers
where. I thought it was interesting. I hope I get this stat
right. While I was watching the SC game,
they were talking about Caleb Williams, obviously,
and they said that there were expected to be 44%
of starting quarterbacks across the competition
were transfers.
Like, every school has a new quarterback, basically,
because of all this porting.
I think it ended up being like 46%.
Yeah, so what is that? That's weird, right? a new quarterback basically because of all this I think it ended up being like 46 percent yeah so
what is that that's weird right it's just it's not in my opinion it's not sustainable for success
like I think that ideally I mean Caleb Williams is kind of the outlier to this right Gabe but I
think ideally you want a guy who you bring in and he's there for three years right um and you know
Caleb but Caleb is so interesting because he goes from oklahoma and
lincoln rally to usc and lincoln rally like that doesn't feel like even a transfer really right
like you're just and you bring you bring mario williams over yeah jordan addison like you're
the same team just out west um i just think ideally like for oregon's a good example okay
oregon now has had two straight years of playing transfer quarterbacks. Anthony Brown, so Justin Herbert was there,
then Anthony Brown, then Bo Nix.
And I'd rather have a young kid that's good,
and we don't have one right now.
But, like, we can't wait to have this five-star Dante Moore.
Like, I can't wait for him to play next year.
He'll be a true freshman.
I think you would rather build from within.
Of course, there are instances where the transfer does help
and does work, and we've seen it.
Again, Lincoln Riley is a good example where it has worked many times.
But he's a special coach.
I just think ideally you want guys that you bring in.
But I get why first-year coaches go get transfers that are veterans,
like go get guys that you trust and know you've seen play before.
I get that part of it as well.
So it is a different game now. And yeah, not surprising that
we're seeing I mean, you know, talk about, you know, out west, man, like, we have transfer
quarterback starting this year at Oregon, at USC, at Cal, at Arizona, Arizona, no, Arizona State, Washington, Washington State.
I think that's it.
Colorado, I think this week was going to start a new kid.
Utah, Cam Rising was a transfer.
Not transferring this year.
So you have eight guys this year, eight Pac-12 schools,
starting a transfer they got this season.
This season, again, Cam rising was a transfer two,
three years ago to Utah.
You know,
again,
Stanford doesn't have one and UCLA doesn't have one.
I think I'm missing an Oregon state.
Doesn't have one.
So yeah.
So eight of the teams have a transfer this season.
One has a transfer from two years ago.
That's the game now.
It's not good.
I think,
I think it's not great.
USC is a different situation.
You also can't just, you can't play rice every week., I think. I think it's not great. USC is a different situation. You also can't play Rice every week.
So I think that that is – I am a big fan of Colin Coward.
You know this, and I know you are as well.
It's got to stop a little bit.
It's a little – can you send a message to me like,
you got to slow the USC thing down just a little bit.
It's a little much.
It's a little much.
I will not.
If anything, I would say turn it up a little bit more, Colin. It's just a little bit. It's a little much. It's a little much. I will not. If anything, I would say turn it up a little bit more.
It's just a little much.
It's a little obnoxious.
When they lose to Stanford this weekend,
are you going to be the same boastful USC fan?
They're not going to lose to Stanford this weekend.
They will lose to Oregon State in Corvallis in three weeks.
I'm telling you right now.
That is always some dumb Thursday night in Corvallis.
It's actually on Saturday now,
but they're still going to lose that game in Corvallis.
Half a stadium, too.
They only have half a stadium right now.
They're going to lose to the Beavers.
All right, fair enough.
A couple other quarterbacks to talk about.
So to your point, having the guy who comes back
and you can build around,
even when you lose other skilled players,
that's what Ohio State has.
So C.J. Stroud's there again.
They lose a whole bunch of first-round guys, but he's throwing to new guys and it all seems pretty good they beat notre dame
so that's an example of what you're saying and then another guy who you know look they're building
something i don't know quite what it is but shadura sanders deon's kid who's the quarterback
at jackson state i mean they're fun and his stats were crazy. I get it. Different level of competition.
Apart from just being great on Instagram, are these guys for real?
Is Deion building something real?
Yeah, they didn't win 10 games last year?
No, I know, but you often would maybe tell me that they're not playing tough enough teams or something.
I don't know.
Sure, but they're not playing SEC schedule,
but they're winning the games on their schedule,
and they're doing it at a high level. mean i don't i guess i don't know like what for real is
like they're in their in their level of play they're one of the better teams sure but can
dion but through through success and by being beyond can he keep stealing talented players
yes who are willing to play for him instead of the georgias Alabamas. Is this possible? I guess it depends on how good those players end up being at Jackson State
and whether or not they get drafted as high as they would if they played
somewhere else.
We don't know that right now, right?
Like, that's his son, obviously, is playing for him.
But Travis Henry, some other players that have gone there,
we won't know for three years, Gabe,
if players will continue to go there
knowing that you might not get drafted as high,
which again, I don't know the answer to that right now,
but that would change people's minds.
All right, well, let's talk about changing
some people's minds in the NFL.
For some reason,
it seems like everyone's just trying
to talk themselves out of the Rams.
These are the defending champs who seem like they, if anything, got better in the offseason.
And we're opening the season in a couple days with the Bills as favorites in L.A.
I know everyone's super hot on the Bills because they almost won a game.
I don't understand why people are not just assuming the Rams are the best team in football.
Like, why are we sleeping on the Rams?
Well, we'll get to our picks with Matt later this week.
I mean, the Rams plus three at home on Thursday night sound kind of juicy, right?
I mean, the defending champ wins these Thursday games opening weekend quite often.
You know, I think it's a Los Angeles thing, Gabe.
You know, you're out West.
You know this. I'm from Los Angeles. No one. You know, you're out west. You know this.
I'm from Los Angeles.
No one gives a shit about them in their own city.
Why would people care about them nationally, right?
That's why, you know, USC is the talk of the town.
That's always been the way, right?
It's been a USC, Lakers, Dodgers town.
And the Lakers and Dodgers have to be really good for people to care.
I mean, the Dodgers have 92 wins this season.
People sort of care about them.
But nationally, do people talk about the Dodgers
like they should? They have 92 wins.
They're going to win 110 games this
season, and they're not talked about the same
way the Yankees are and the Yankees collapse. It's happening
right now, right? Baseball-wise.
And that's part of it. It's just
like in Los Angeles, and there's
not this
rabid fan base of Rams
fans that want attention want attention that networks you
know I work for Fox Sports game I get once a week a list of like the top teams that hit on the app
right and the top teams that they cover never the Rams Packers Cowboys Niners I mean all the
NFC teams obviously Ohio State Michigan the Big Ten teams who they cover.
It's rarely the Rams.
And they're just not, I think that's part of it.
They're just not a lot of, like, juice in their own city for their team.
I think people look at the Rams and think that, like, last year, you know,
they played a Bengals team that I think we agree is not the best team in the NFC Conference.
And I think that people look at that win as maybe not as the same
as if they beat, you know, Tom Brady, New England team, for example.
Again, I mean, just kind of throwing things out there with the Tom Brady team.
But I just think there's just no juice, man.
I'm with you.
They're going to win the AFC West again if Stafford's elbow holds out.
But I think that's all the reasons why.
Do you buy any of those?
Yeah, I mean, that's certainly why, but just looking football, I mean,
they, it was all off season. We were like, how does the salary cap work?
The same for them? Like, well, so, so they added players,
they got healthier, like, well, you know, and then their division,
their division got worse.
So here's the thing is that I think that a lot of us look at them and say and I I don't have a lot but I do
this right like they're like one or two injuries away from just having no one left to play because
of of of all the um again it's not it's not their fault everyone has that issue as well but you know
they just they're just there's not a lot of depth there i think people just assume that if you have a little bit of a fall off that um you're just
not going to be as good um i think then that's why otherwise i don't really have a good reason
why people are not as high on them yeah i i think i would make all the bets on the rams for a season
and i mean every team is susceptible to injuries.
They have more depth than a lot of teams I can think of.
You know, I don't know how much Bobby Wagner has left in the tank,
but, like, adding another known playmaker on defense seems like a good thing.
I didn't even think down the – in the playoffs,
I didn't even think Jalen Ramsey played that well.
You know, he got smoked by the Bucs, and they still won.
I feel like they could get better
defensively. Jamar Chase played pretty well
against him. Yeah.
So they're not, I mean, they could all
get better defensively.
We know their offense works. Allen Robinson's
better than OBJ at this point.
Running
backs who look healthy? I don't know, man.
It just seems like it's so sexy to be on the bills that nobody wants to talk
about the Rams and all the other reasons you said.
I really think it's a lot of the end.
We're just going to see two LA teams near the top of each conference.
I really think that it's a lot to do with just Los Angeles and they're just
not a lot of juice in Los Angeles for, for this team.
I think people look at that as, again,
if you're not going to be juiced for your own team and your own city,
why am I going to spend a lot of time talking about you guys?
And they're relatively boring.
They don't have a big personality.
Aaron Donald, maybe, but Cooper Cupp's boring.
Stafford's kind of boring.
The McVay thing, people are still enamored by his ability to recall plays.
They just don't have a lot of personality.
I just think this all plays a role into all of it.
No, we can't all be fountains of personality like the Bucs quarterback.
Not everyone is just a barrel of glass.
We'll get to the Bucs quarterback in a few minutes, buddy.
Your best friend.
All right, let's take a quick break.
We'll come back.
We'll hit a few more topics by moving the line
yeah we're back it's time to move the line or over under game uh over under 17 and a half percent
chance lamar jackson has a new contract by the time people hear this podcast under it's not
going to happen right now you don't think so so how worried should
we be about no i think that it would have happened already i think he's i think he's fine um he wants
a certain number and he'll get the number or he'll walk in my opinion maybe franchise tag probably
but i just think that um he's not he at least right now Gabe, he does not seem like he is very upset about this.
He might be at some point, but right now it does not seem to be a problem.
Yeah, I don't see a lot of evidence of him.
He's not whining.
And he's liking funny tweets and stuff, too.
It just seems like it's just not bothering him.
No, he's doing the opposite of what, you know, he didn't strip the Ravens of his social media profiles like many his age do.
All right, so we're going to say this will resolve itself, and we like the Ravens this year.
Quinn Ewers, the Texas quarterback, had his car towed during his first start for Texas this year.
I saw this.
So over under 5% chance the school just wanted to make room for
bijan robinson to park his lambo i don't even know what i just asked you hank put that in it's uh
dude it's it i'm shocked this happened um but even sark was like yeah you need to like you need to
like you figure this out uh hank has h Hank got the B. John Robinson mustard yet?
He probably has ordered it.
Do you know what B. John Robinson has in mustard?
I like that.
B. John D. John mustard or something?
Yeah.
Texas get their asses kicked this week, by the way.
Sorry, Hank.
You're going to get your asses kicked.
Bama favored by 21.
You're taking Bama laying 21.
Yeah, Bama.
Eat it, Hank.
Yes.
In real life, probably not, but on the show, yes.
All right, here's Iowa's points by quarter
from their week one game against San Diego State.
I see 3-0, 2-2 to win 7-3 on a field goal and two safeties.
So how many Iowa games are you going to watch this year over under
one and a half it was uh the score was three to three then five to three then seven to three
incredible absolutely incredible i will i will watch uh let's see if i gotta bet any of these
games it comes down to it right like if wherever they play ohio state like i'll probably if it's at home maybe i'll bet ohio state if it's i so probably zero one or zero games that's i mean that's that's atrocious
dude that's wild come on it's very bad um but their their stadium i don't know man i remember
last year when they were playing pretty well and we were falling in love with their defense and
then we saw them play at home and that stadium was going absolutely nuts.
I feel like if they're comfortable winning ugly,
like I wouldn't want to have to go there and play them.
If you know,
my season was on the line,
that doesn't feel like a good team to go up against.
Yeah.
But the, the,
the winning ugly stuff,
like only works until it doesn't like you need to just,
you need to have options,
dude.
Like you need to have like different ways to win.
And Iowa does not.
And that continues to be a problem for them.
Field goals or safeties.
I got two ways.
Touche.
Touche.
Away from football for a second,
but probably the biggest sports story going in the last few days.
So Serena Williams played what we assume will be her last tennis match at the
U.S. Open.
Pretty incredible final match.
I was watching.
I assume you were watching.
I was.
Is Serena, I want over under one and a half,
her ranking of greatest athlete of all time.
Is she number one or somewhere lower?
Individual athlete, right?
Not qualifying it, period, athlete. all time is she number one or somewhere lower individual even individual athlete right i'm not
qualifying it period athlete um she's the i would say she's the best individual athlete of all time
i mean i you know what jordan was able to do in the nba um i she's up there dude she's so good
for so long i was watching the final match friday i was in
atlanta with my wife and we were watching it and my wife is not a sports fan just the questions
she asked were just like like like why did you just let her win like because they're the u.s
open like i'm not gonna let serena win just like the stuff about like just the stuff she was asking was just so
funny, dude, from a non-sports fan.
And I'm not, I am not
a sentimental person
really ever, especially in sports. Like I
most of my career just wasn't sentimental
like breaking my leg every other year
and having surgeries not, doesn't make my
life sentimental, I think, in the NFL.
But I think it was, but I
really enjoyed
when they spoke to Serena
after the match
she was so genuine in that moment
she thanked her family, her sister
it obviously wasn't set up
they wanted to talk to her of course
you could watch that happen
but I just thought it was so genuine
it was genuinely who she is
you could tell she felt the gratitude
it wasn't one of these speeches where your boy Tom is going's gonna give one day where he just is like a robot at the press
conference she just felt like it felt very authentic and i think they really i think it
was i mean i'm not saying it wasn't but i just i liked i liked her after the match talking about
and she's obviously giving it all so um it was uh it was great to to see her at the end obviously i wish she would have won
um but uh nonetheless i was glad i was able to see that moment yeah and and i think the thing
that's cool about serena that differentiates her from some of the other people in the
sort of goat you know you brought up uh jordan brady's name comes up tiger obviously i mean
it's like j, Tiger, right?
Like Jordan, Tiger, Serena.
Who else you put on the national? But so the difference.
Brady.
I mean, Michael Phelps, I guess.
Usain Bolt.
Yeah, Phelps.
LeBron, obviously, is in the conversation.
So I think what's different to me about Serena,
as opposed to most of those other guys is they've all invented chips on their shoulder they've all told themselves that people are
counting them out or or conspiring against them they've they've made out these narratives that
like somebody was trying to hold them back and they overcame it. And it's mostly BS. It's just a way to get themselves psyched up.
We've talked about it on this show in Serena's case,
she doesn't act that way. And yet that's actually how it has been for her.
Like the tennis world did not want to see her and her sister take over.
She's had all kinds of criticism. Most of it, totally unfair for her whole career.
Everything she does is scrutinized there's people
constantly badgering her and yet she has a really good attitude and doesn't like create some fake
narrative about herself the way the others do and i think that just makes her different than
some of these others i had not thought i had not thought about that i know again i don't i don't
i don't listen to her talk as often as maybe you have. It's a good point. She never really had done that, and we know her background and upbringing.
And it's a good point.
She's just an easier person to root for.
I've not thought about that.
She doesn't seem –
Again, I think she seems very genuine, right?
And yet has had more success than almost anyone in any sport ever.
Yeah.
The craziest thing, too, is her only actual rival at any point in her
whole career was her own sister like that it's just such dominance it's crazy it is it is crazy
and and what's what's also crazy for the last over under today um tom brady announced that
he's going to pick one person to narrate a letter that he wrote and over under one million dollars for gabe goodwin to narrate the
letter for another goat of his profession tom brady you're asking if i would be willing to do
it for a million dollars yes for a million dollars i would read the words tom brady asked me to write
or to say about him but but like not much less than what's the lowest amount of
money you're not getting me to do that for 100 grand i'm like i wouldn't tell my wife i turned
down 100 grand to read some stupid crap about tom brady i wouldn't want her to know that but i would
turn it down for 100 grand does your wife find does your wife like oh tom's kind of attractive
she doesn't talk about tom brady she understands that it's, it's actually a sore subject for me. She could,
we could like go out and like, she could be like, Oh,
your friend is really cute. And it wouldn't bother me at all.
If she was like, you know, Tom Brady, not bad. I'd be like,
you stop that right now.
It'd be like, what was it?
Hon Tom Brady's had a lot of work done. I think you should go his route.
You think she'd bring that up to me?
Maybe try to look more like Tom Brady?
I don't think that's going to be achievable.
There's not enough plastic surgeons in LA
to make me look like Tom Brady.
So you're out.
So a million dollars is where you're...
I'd do it for a million, but no less.
I would do it just
to troll you for free tom you want to you know i'll do it just just just to troll gabe who was
that person in the video was it richard attenborough was that him in the video yeah there's some old
guy oh who knows um okay gabe you are someone who has grown quite a little empire in the podcasting world when tom's career is done
and there's a couple connections made and they say hey tom this guy over here at blue duck
it's got a lot it's got a lot of sets of podcasts going this you know this podcast
shows smarter than you millions of views a month um would you be interested in talking to Gabe about starting a podcast with Gabe and Blue Duck?
Are you taking that call?
Yeah, but I would lay out for Tom Brady that I think the most interesting show we could make
is me, just some guy, like a whole show of me criticizing him
and then him rebutting all my
criticisms.
It's you just berating Tom Brady.
Yeah. I berate Tom Brady on Tom Brady's own show.
He pays me to do it.
And then everyone's happy because they they're ultimately, they hate me.
They love him and they hate me, but it's a good, it's a good.
Everyone. I pay Gabe nothing to be on the show so um tom he paid tom pain gave to be on this show um
tom is also tom is also we're employees i mean we're like work we're work employees so
so allegedly you are allegedly i am and um we're gonna be best friends i'm gonna get a picture
with him at some point, just to troll
you. I don't even know when that's going to be.
It's going to be Super Bowl week.
I'm certain you're going to spend time around
him at Super Bowl week, and
I'll probably be... I told my wife
that she's going to be best friends with Gisele
because we're going to be at some random Super Bowl party
together. Maybe. I don't think I'm going to...
To be fair, though, I'm not
invited to those Super Bowl parties that Tom's going to be going to. I'm too low at the
rung of Fox to be invited to those. If you read the New York Post, I don't know if she'll be
invited either. So. Oh, well, we've been right. We've been right
about that for weeks. So we were right about that.
I mean, obviously, I don't like talking about relationships of other individuals and I
wish them the best. but we nailed that story.
That was pretty obvious.
It was fair to say that this was not a football issue and that family life was clearly the reason he had to be away.
Who the heck knows what's really going on between them?
Yeah, another thing was unfair to speculate on that.
I mean, again, they said that no one was sick.
I think his mom is sick, right?
So the report was it had nothing to do with his parents.
No one's sick in the family. I've been enough training camps. I know what this was about. I think his mom is sick, right? The report was it had nothing to do with his parents. No one's sick in the family.
I've been enough training camps. I know what this
was about. We were right. I get it.
We don't need to delve into that, but
it was a family issue.
He did kind of look
worn out, I think, at some
of those press conferences when he came back.
They're still going to beat Dallas in week one
and move on from there.
All right, Jeff. You told us all season to talk you off of any,
if you ever start to lean Cowboys, you said talk you out of it.
So I'm glad week one, glad week one you're fading them.
Oh, yeah, I'm going Tampa on the road,
covering like the two or whatever it is.
100%, yeah.
Oh, by the way, last over and under very quickly,
Eastbound and Down put out a tweet two hours ago
that appears they're back in 2024 over under hell yes fuck yeah i don't think they're trolling us i
think it says they're back in 2024 i don't i think they're being telling the truth i cannot
was it one of these like it's today like a weird troll day it's like it's not april 1st that feels
real to me that feels very real i love it
dude when he came the first time i saw him come out to i'm a real american in the mexican league
i was crying i was in tears laughing it was so incredibly funny just like the american arrogance coming out the bitch with the american flag and the
suck it's everywhere like just it's the best thing i've ever seen the first time i saw that scene
isn't he isn't he shooting it's like shooting fireworks off and everything it's incredible
it's unbelievable and then my wife and i like the scene when they're doing the time with the
potato card how about the fixes and stuff.
It's just an incredible show.
It's in North Carolina.
It's Shelby, North Carolina.
They have a whole season in Myrtle Beach, which all that stuff about the bike weeks and stuff is absolutely true in Myrtle Beach.
Oh, I love it.
It's back.
It's back, everyone.
Just like we're back to football season.
Curb's also coming back, Jeff.
We're going to be loaded up. Oh, Curb is? So Curb was much better last year than two years ago. Curb's also coming back, Jeff. We're going to be loaded up.
Oh, Curb is?
So Curb was much better last year than two years ago.
Curb was great last year.
Larry's got more to say.
Oh, God.
That show's...
It's back?
When's it back?
I don't know.
Season 12's coming.
I don't know when.
Have you watched the Dragon show yet on HBO, the new one?
Yeah.
Is it good?
It is pretty good.
I like it.
It's cool.
My problem is I don't know the...
Too many names i have to learn
again i know i i got one my daughter's name is ray and the the main girl in the show is
reynaris or reynis and i like that because it's another strong girl named ray i think in the in
the show she's supposed to be like 8 or 10, but
in real life, she's obviously in her 20s, the actress.
Yeah, I think she's supposed to be really
young on the show. I think she's supposed to be
15 on the show, but
the actress is obviously older. I don't think
Danny, you know Danny was like 12
in the first, I mean, in the actual
first season of Game of Thrones.
I think she's like 12, or in the book, she's like
12 when she,
when her first.
So yeah,
they started him young and then,
but I got to watch that.
Okay.
Enough pop culture stuff.
