You know, never having the ability to finish my high school career of playing like my senior year.
I have dreams all the time about playing football.
And it's like it's crazy because I actually never run on the field in my dreams.
It's Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th.
Tom Brady is not great at golf.
Cam Newton and Dak Prescott are still seeking new deals
and we'll tell you the reason why LeBron James
would not be good at football.
I'm Jeff Schwartz alongside Gabe Goodwin
and this is Jeff Schwartz of SmartU.
The guy you hear snickering in the background
is Gabe Goodwin.
I'm telling you guys right now,
Gabe is bringing the venom today.
If you guys think that some of Gabe's takes at times are a little bit tailored to pissing me off,
today is real.
Today is going to be Gabe 100% because we actually differ.
We've been talking about these topics off air, obviously.
We differ on a lot of these, and so you're going to see a full, passionate debate back and forth.
Gabe, we had some live sports this weekend.
We had the match.
We had NASCAR, which I don't think either of us really watched.
And we're getting towards sports, it feels like.
How is your weekend going?
I know it's a long, extended weekend.
How are you doing, buddy?
I'm doing great.
And yes, it is nice to have some sports.
Mainly, though, just for the fact that Twitter is a little livelier.
And I got to tell you, Jeff, the memes have no off season.
Okay.
Tom Brady got the regular season heat yesterday when he picked up some golf clubs and went
out with some of the greatest in the world.
By the way, Peyton Manning, no slouch on a golf course.
So it was Tom Brady and Phil Mickelson versus Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning in the world. By the way, Peyton Manning, no slouch on a golf course. So it was Tom Brady
and Phil Mickelson versus Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning in a match. They were raising money for
COVID, which is great, which means, you know, no matter all the jokes that come up, this was a good
thing. But all anyone wanted to do was tool on Tom Brady, probably because we've had no chances in
our lives to ever make fun of the dude. He never failed in front of us ever and here he was
hacking it up like every old duffer everyone from every stripe was tooling on him i'm gonna give you
the best line i saw because i know it'll put a little extra in you this is from my guy skip
bayless he says so far tom brady is playing golf the way i figured Jarrett Stidham will play quarterback next year, trying to replace Tom Brady.
Jeff, this was glorious.
To see Tom Brady brought down to earth was a dream come true.
What fun that was.
It was a lot of fun yesterday.
It was five and a half hours.
It was super long, right?
It was long.
It was drawn out.
I get it.
It was for, you know, the production value.
Of course, it was very 2020, right, for it
to downpour in the start of this match when yesterday, or I guess on Saturday now, the weather
was fantastic, right? It looked like a great day. But nonetheless, I absolutely love it. So here's
the things that I love kind of not really in order. But one, you mentioned Tom Brady. Look,
Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in their careers have never had moments, and some never too strong, because Peyton Manning did throw a pick six to lose the Super Bowl.
But they haven't rarely had moments where they looked even human at all, right?
They've always been the best at their sport, the best at their position.
They are cemented top 10 football players of all time. Yesterday, at least through the first nine holes, especially on hole one and two, Manning and Brady looked like normal Joes trying to golf,
looked like weekend wars, looked like me and you trying to get out there
and hit a goal.
Tom Brady one time hit a chip one foot.
He did one foot.
It literally just scraped off the ground and landed a foot in front of him,
and then he hit it again.
The first hole, you saw Tom Brady counting the strokes that he had,
just like me and you would do if we went golfing.
Think about this.
They have played in, I think, combined what?
They've played in 12 Super Bowls combined now?
Maybe 14 or 13.
Three for Peyton and nine for Tom?
I think Peyton played in four, I believe.
Two at Denver, two at the Colts.
Oh, you're right.
You're right.
He's two for two.
He's two for two.
And Brady's played nine, right?
So that's 13 Super Bowls.
And they came out on the first tee and looked as nervous as they've ever been in life.
And that's exactly how I mean you.
I look nervous when I'm going the first tee at the local Muni course with no one surrounding me.
I'm like, okay, please hit a good shot.
Please hit a good shot.
Please hit a good shot.
And they both just completely shamed it.
So that part was great.
And, of course, Brady makes his comeback on hole 9 or 10.
He hits it in from about 200 yards.
And then the Atlanta Falcon jokes come pouring in, which I was part of.
28-3, now it's 28-10, now it's 28-17.
And they're rolling along.
What I also liked, which was really cool,
and I wonder if this is going to be a part of the broadcast going forward.
I doubt it is.
But the way Phil Mickelson discussed hitting a golf ball throughout the entire day was fabulous.
I mean, he said, like, I'm going to hit the ball in this exact part where the grass gets darker because that's on the downslope, but it's wet.
So if I hit it there, it'll kind of slow it down a little bit, but it'll also skid off onto the green.
Boom, he does it right away.
Talking about putting, talking about his angle of his drive. Now wasn't as talkative and brady wasn't as talkative
of course his microphone went out the entire time because it's tom brady as usual um yeah so i like
that phil you know the phil part of him just explaining golf to me pain manning being funny
i knew he was funny i didn't know he was this funny like genuinely a funny guy taking shots
at brady and those guys i just thought it was really good justin thomas was good he was funny. I didn't know he was this funny. Like genuinely a funny guy taking shots at Brady
and those guys. I just thought it was really good. Justin Thomas was good. Barkley took him a little
bit of time to get in the flow, I think. He made it work. Brooks Koepka calling in. Russell Wilson
calling in. Like it just was a great event in my opinion. And I don't know if this is something we
can do in the future. It feels like there's not a lot of superstars in my opinion that I think
would garner the attention of Brady and Manning.
But just to have live sports for five hours on a Sunday where I didn't see a tweet about COVID.
I didn't see a tweet about politics.
All I saw was a community once again embracing sports.
Absolutely loved it.
It was long.
I get it.
But for all those reasons, I thought it was perfect to have on this weekend.
Yeah.
No, I mean, it's a lot of fun.
I will say it was the most pleasurable part of it for me was watching all of you football media guys who I think swore some oath somewhere.
Never to say a crossword about Tom Brady.
Have to admit that maybe a tiny modicum of good natured ribbing was in order.
That yet the guy's
just a dude.
Like,
look,
not everything he does,
not everything about his life is perfect.
I will also say though,
slow the hell down with everyone saying like,
look,
he's just like us.
No,
he isn't.
Go on a golf course.
He's a lot better than you.
All of you at golf.
And I'm not the guy who wants to say this.
Believe me, I'm no Brady fan.
He'd kick the crap out of everyone in golf.
Well, for the first nine holes game, he was on par to get over 100.
Dude, he had like seven shots a hole.
And then, of course, he rips that ball in on nine or ten.
I forget what hole it was.
And then, obviously, him and Phil were great.
But you could tell.
I love a couple other things, too, though.
Like his wife tweeting out when he
was doing terribly, like, go
Lovey. It's something that my wife would do, right? Like sort of
like not really paying attention to the
game and like I'm not, you know, I
allow a sack and she tweets out like
go Jeffrey. It'd be like, it's just like
a very loving moment that
I can relate to.
And I know the pants ripping
I mean, Under Armour, come on guys yeah you you put
them with some uh some some ripping pants how about tiger bringing back the chin strap i mean
it was just it was just a good wholesome event i liked it it was it was image repair for a lot of
guys um these are four of the biggest superstars of our lifetime. But none, frankly, is without a few dents in the armor in the last few years.
And, you know, I'm not getting into all of it, but people can Google.
Each of them have had some things.
Some obviously more serious than others.
And to just see them be good guys, be approachable guys, be fun guys, talk some trash.
I mean, there were several good lines.
People were quoting Peyton Manning all afternoon.
Yeah, it was cool. I guess not to make it serious in any way. Cause I mean, we're going to go to much more ridiculous places on the show today, but is there anything about
sort of the competitive spirit? Charles Barkley spent a lot of time talking about how Tom Brady
was out there running wind sprints and he had played 18 in the morning to get ready. Is there
anything real we can learn about Tom Brady, the football player, about what he's still got left in the
tank? Well, I will say
the one thing that came out on Saturday
was he was wearing a knee sleeve.
And then he came out Sunday and wore the long
pants. Well, the other three were wearing
shorts, I believe.
And I tweeted out Saturday
when I saw the picture of them playing like,
oh, the knee sleeve, it's going to be topic all
week on first take
and speak for yourself that there is a knee sleeve being worn by Tom Brady.
The guy's like 43 years old playing golf.
He's got a little front leg there.
He's got a little rotation issue maybe.
Who knows?
But no, nothing can be taken away in my opinion.
All right.
I mean, clearly there has to be some work done up here right
i mean his face is immaculate no lines just like perfectly tucked back like it's just like again we
don't need this he just looks so good gabe i'm just today is the day we talk about how he's not
perfect we're not sneaking in how handsome he is none of that okay he had a crap day we can enjoy
that i was pissed, though.
Not pissed is the wrong word, but the Belichick jokes on Twitter got a little much.
I was like, okay, that's like too obvious.
Can we not get to the – we understand the whole Belichick thing and he's not with Belichick.
It's the first, quote, unquote, event he's done without Belichick.
Like the jokes on that end were too much.
But the other stuff, like the system golfer jokes that I joked about. He was a driver.
System golfer.
Didn't dunk down.
He won the long drive, which is hilarious.
Are you a golfer, by the way?
Yeah.
I'm not bad.
I mean, now I'm starting to think I might be better than Tom Brady.
What's an iron driver?
They use the word.
Yeah, like a hybrid iron.
Yeah, it's basically like a fairway metal type thing.
It's a cheap club.
They didn't have it growing up.
This is like a club that's been invented.
It's basically like a thick iron.
I have a hybrid like that.
What is your handicap?
I don't know.
I mean, now with a million kids in my house, I probably only play a few times a year.
I'd say at my absolute best, I was like a 10 or a 12.
Really?
Yeah, probably.
I've never broken 100.
I don't know.
You know, when I was good at golf, I would always shoot in the 80s.
I've never broken 80.
Wow.
Look at you.
I can just see you on the golf course with the TV executives just doing some shop talk just with a cigar just hidden away in the golf.
I am terrible at golf.
I don't have the patience for it.
I don't have the back right now for it.
I love to play more, but I just –
I don't have six hours in my day to drive to the course, warm up, play golf.
Who has six hours to do that?
No.
Unless your wife just like lets you leave the house for six hours,
which I know mine doesn't.
Well, no.
Of course she doesn't.
Even if she did, I wouldn't use those six hours walking around the golf course. No, I'd go like watch a movie or something. You would have been pissed with me, no. Of course she doesn't. And even if she did, I wouldn't use those six hours walking around the golf course.
No, I'd go watch a movie or something. You would have been pissed with me, Gabe, today because I did a radio show this morning.
And we went over the top 50 grossing movies on Memorial Day weekend. And I'd only seen like 16 and a half out of 50. You would have been pissed with me.
I would have taken the under. I wouldn't have guessed you'd even seen 16 and a half.
You would have been pissed at me.
I would have taken the under.
I wouldn't have guessed you'd even seen 16 and a half.
I didn't see any of the Indiana Jones movies.
Haven't seen any Back to Future movies.
You would have been, yeah, I know.
You would have been pissed at me.
I was thinking about that this morning. Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.
Before we move on, hold on.
Like no Indiana Jones movies, no Raiders, no Temple of Doom?
It's on Netflix.
I'm going to watch it.
But I had no, I don't think I've seen,
I've been on the ride at Disneyland more often
than I've seen the movies.
What are we doing here? Let's just Zuri hit stop.
We're done recording today. What Jeff does go watch Raiders of the Lost Ark. What the hell are we talking about? I just thought you'd enjoy that because you despise my, my pop culture,
lack of knowledge. That's insane though. You're the perfect age group and you will love it.
Raiders of the Lost Ark is a misfit. I got it when you hadn't seen Wayne's World, whatever.
But Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I've never seen it, buddy. I'll go do it after this. I'll give you a book report by next week.
Thank you. All right. Well, here's another thing that confuses the crap out of me, Jeff,
besides just the various blind spots you have culturally.
the crap out of me, Jeff, besides just the various blind spots you have culturally.
Cam Newton still isn't signed. And I honestly, like for the first couple of weeks of this,
I was like, oh, well, you know, it's one of those things and it's COVID and it's this.
I could rationalize a lot of excuses. I have lost all the excuses. It makes zero sense. He is the only guy who started a game last year who isn't signed right now.
Flacco has a job.
Andy Dalton.
Not only does Andy Dalton have a job, Andy Dalton could be a starter soon.
We'll get to that briefly.
Every guy who's ever thrown a football is throwing footballs for someone right now except Cam Newton.
So I come to one of a few conclusions.
Either, unfortunately, the dude might still be hurt and teams know it.
That's one real possibility
two he's demanding too much money that doesn't seem likely anymore or c and god help me if this
is true he's going to new england and they're just waiting they're just waiting us out it can
be only one of those three things why isn't cam newton signed well there's a lot of things to
discuss here first i want to I want to hit one thing.
This is important, okay?
So Deadspin had a terrible tweet this weekend.
Oh, really?
First time.
Yeah, I know.
They've never done it before.
Where they were comparing, you know, they said, well, Tyler Bray, who's kind of a journeyman,
never really played in a game.
I don't think he started a game.
Signed with the Bears for a one-year deal for like $900,000, which is the minimum deal, right?
So we do this thing, and I want to make sure this is very clear, because I think this is
very important in this discussion.
We do this thing when any quarterback signs, we talk about Colin Kaepernick and Cam Newton
in this case, he's been lumped into this.
And they say, well, look, Tyler Bray signed.
Look, Cam Newton's not signed.
Cap's not signed.
Guys, they're not up for the same job.
Cam Newton's not up for third-string quarterback on the Bears.
He's not up for that job.
So can we please not?
Because there's a real discussion to have.
We're going to have it about Cam Newton right now.
There's a real discussion to have.
It's not like, hey, why did he not get a third-string quarterback job?
Just like when I, in our business, I see someone get a job.
I'm not up for that job.
How can I be upset that I didn't get Monday Night Football?
I'm not up for that job.
So please, when we talk about these subjects,
please actually know what to discuss, okay?
So here's the thing with Cam Newton.
There's many things here I think are all kind of plausible.
One, I do think that the health is a concern,
but not that big anymore. I mean, it's very clear that I think he all kind of plausible. One, I do think that the health is a concern, but not that big anymore.
I mean, it's very clear that I think he's healthy.
Now, whether or not you believe that he's healthy enough
to be your franchise quarterback
or not get hurt in the future,
that is the question, right?
I mean, I think that there are teams that think,
look, if we sign him to a long-term contract,
will he remain healthy on our team?
But I think it's very clear now
that he is healthy at the moment.
Secondly, it's who wants him to be a starter?
Because number one, he wants to start, obviously.
And look, if he's healthy, he's better than half the NFL starters, okay?
He's better than half the guys that are starting now.
He's better than half the Pro Bowl starters.
I mean, he's healthy.
He's the best guy out there.
And that's the thing about the if healthy part, right?
And I think he is. I think he is. So
you look around the NFL and you say, just
as we speak right now, how many
places can he go
in realistically? Like, you know, not like
Buffalo where he's better than Josh Allen, but they're not
going to give him the job. Realistically,
where can he go and start
now? And there's two places really come
to mind. Jacksonville, right?
Gardner Minshew.
I just, this doesn't feel like the guy who's going to lead him to the promised land, but
they feel like they want to suck this season or New England.
I just don't think his personality meshes with Belichick, but I'll tell you what, players
have come into New England who don't mesh with Belichick and kind of abide by Bill Belichick,
right?
I mean, we've seen it now, I think, a little bit even with the sneak peek with Tom Brady,
kind of being more personality after he left, right?
We've seen that.
And I know how happy you are for the new nine-part Brady doc that will be out before we know it.
Oh, God, stop.
And so I think Cam would, I think conform is the wrong word,
but he would be able to kind of be a patriot. So those
are the two teams. Otherwise, there's not many teams right now, I think, that are looking for
starting quarterbacks. The third part of this is, does he want a backup deal? So obviously,
if he wants to play in the NFL, he can take a Jameis Winston deal or one year for $1 million.
But that's ridiculous. Why would he do that? So at this point of free agency,
there really is no point for him to sign any deals, not a starting deal. Those backup deals
will still be here in August. They'll still be here in September. So there's no rush for him to
sign a contract right now. And that might be the thing. It's like, look, I'm going to wait. Maybe
someone gets hurt while they're training right now. Maybe facilities open up and a guy, unfortunately, has an elbow issue.
Or Big Ben comes back in the facility and Steelers are like, I don't know, I'll go sign
Cam Newton.
So there's actual benefit now to him waiting it out if someone's going to sign him to be
a backup.
Obviously, the Jaguars call and say, hey, man, we'll give you two years, $22 million,
come be our starter.
Go ahead. Go be the starter. But right now, Gabe, there is we'll give you two years, 22 million, come be our starter. Go ahead.
Go be the starter.
But right now, Gabe, there is no point in him signing a backup deal.
He has time on his hand.
He doesn't have to tie himself to any organization.
Yeah, I mean, that makes sense.
And you can't even be in a facility and you wouldn't be at training camp till the middle
of July, which might be the end of July, which might be August.
Preseason is going to be shortened.
There's a lot of reasons why it doesn't make sense for him
to rush to being signed.
I guess I'm wondering, though, and I can't believe I'm talking about this
because it makes me sick, but I'm wondering if maybe Belichick
and the Patriots are sort of trying to create a little bit of leverage
themselves for the point that you just raised,
which is they actually want Cam.
They would like him to be their starting quarterback
because they're not insane.
They don't think that Jared Stidham is better than him.
I mean, Belichick said a few weeks ago something like,
we like the four guys we have on the team.
Like, stop.
You can't even name three of the four.
I think Hoyer would start anyways over Stidham if it came down to who was playing.
Right, okay.
So either of those two
random jabronis who used to you know deflate balls for Tom Brady are now going to be the
starting quarterback over Cam F and Newton stop that's insane which means that I think what maybe
Belichick is trying to do is basically say like we don't need you but if if you want to play by
our rules if you want to come in here and do it the Patriot way in quotes,
whatever the hell that means,
you could be the starting quarterback here.
If you'll be one of those guys,
if you want to come in here and be Cam Newton and what we all know,
Cam Newton to be a superstar.
Nah,
no thanks.
We got Stidham,
but maybe that's Belichick sending a message.
It could be.
I mean,
that's like,
you know,
three-dimensional chess, obviously. Right. Just kind of waiting. That's what he message. It could be. I mean, that's like, you know, three-dimensional chess, obviously, right?
Just kind of waiting it out.
Oh, I thought that's what he plays.
Oh, I thought that's his specialty.
And it was.
I mean, yesterday he got Tom Brady to play poorly in golf for nine holes.
It was obviously Belichick's doing.
It's possible.
I just had this mental picture in my head of, like, Belichick on his phone, right?
He's definitely a one-finger texter.
He's texting on his phone.
Yeah. Text Cam Noon,
and Cam sends back that text
in his text, right?
Like his characters.
Like that to me doesn't feel
like a Belichick thing.
But look, we've seen it though
where players have conformed
to the Patriot way.
And it drove Gronkowski out of New England.
It eventually drove Brady out of New England.
It drives guys out of New England.
But the tradeoff, obviously, is that you win a Super Bowl.
So if you conform to the idea, then you win a Super Bowl.
The question I have that people seem very sure of, and I don't,
is the idea that Belichick kind of wants more of the spread offense-ish type things.
Now, Cam Noon in 2018, when he was healthy in the first eight games,
he stood in the pocket.
He was in Norv Turner's old school offense.
They had some elements of the zone read and the QB power, things like that.
But that was the first year where Cam really was in a, quote-unquote,
pro-style offense.
And I've seen no evidence that Bill Belichick wants to change.
People keep thinking that Belichick, you know,
sees what the Ravers are doing and just, like, wants to change. People keep thinking that Belichick, you know, sees what the Ravers are doing and just like wants to change his offense. But there's no evidence of
that. There's zero. They've drafted the same style of quarterback every single year. Look at him now,
Jairus Zimmerman, Brian Hoyer, the same quarterback, right? Dropback passer in a pro-style
offense. Even I want to make this last point about the Patriots because I think it's important and
people don't seem to understand that this works.
I made this point many times, by the way.
You can see what they fear in the NFL.
They fear a passing attack, right?
Look at their defense.
Their defense is geared to stop the Chiefs, not the Ravens, okay?
Belichick's not afraid of the Ravens.
He's afraid of a passing game, which is what he's had for so many years with Tom Brady.
So if Cam Newton can come in and be a pocket passer,
which again, he was completing 67, 68% of passes
through eight weeks in 2018.
He was fabulous, far better than I expected.
So I hear props on that.
I've kind of softened my stance on Cam
as far as kind of the traditional pocket passer
after those eight games.
That's a large enough sample size, I think,
to where it's like, look, he could do this.
So I think he can fit into what they want to do.
But again, the personality, which is a little overblown,
does that fit what Belichick wants in his quarterback?
I don't know.
All right.
Well, I mean, I hope not,
because we could use at least one or two years off from their dominance up there.
It's for the first time in my life, honestly,
that I can remember looking at a Jets schedule
and trying to find the wins.
And two of the four that I could find are the Patriots.
Honestly, right now I have the Patriots losing to the Jets
on a Monday night.
That's only because they don't have a quarterback currently.
So if God help us, if Cam Newton ends up there,
I see them in the AFC championship
game again. Joe Flacco, congratulations. Come on. Hopefully that turns Darnold into a real player.
Finally, we can't go down to Jets warm. Well, nobody wants to hear me rant about the Jets right
now. They're completely irrelevant. You mentioned briefly, and then we'll move on to Dak Prescott.
You mentioned briefly the Steelers and the fact that maybe Ben doesn't come back totally healthy.
Kind of hard to imagine Ben. I don't want to throw any shade at him, but kind of hard for me to picture Ben Roethlisberger right now doing the extra work by himself without supervision to get
ready for this season. Not exactly the hardest working dude that I've ever seen play the game.
Are we sure that he's going to be ready? And Cam, similar body type. Why couldn't it be Cam?
Hey, Ma.
You're on a podcast.
Oh, there she goes.
And she's gone.
Oh, that was like some elite quickness right there.
That was really good.
She got out of it fast.
The audio listeners will never even know.
She couldn't have hurt her.
Grandma's here taking care of the kids.
I'm jealous.
Fantastic.
So, you know, the Steelers are a very interesting team, Gabe,
because they were third in defense last year.
And a big man can just be like average, a little above average.
They have a chance to win the division.
I mean, I know Baltimore's really good.
I think Baltimore will win 13 games again.
Pittsburgh's going to be no slouch.
And, yeah, it depends on big Ben.
He looks in shape.
He shaved the beard. He looks like a new man.
But, yeah, I mean, when you get older, you don't maybe put in the work quite the same um this is a team i think if big ben comes back in the summer and they're like you know what we're
just not quite sure if he's ready to go see those are a good option for cam i don't know jeff that
wasn't a convincing case i think you've really let it go to shit when the best someone can say about you is,
I don't know, he shaved.
He's looking pretty good.
That is not an endorsement.
All right, let's talk about another quarterback who's got a place to play.
He's got that franchise tag, but he does not have the long-term deal he's looking for.
Dak Prescott, I'm just going to say it.
Dude's lost his mind.
He's just delusional.
This is all that you will find from any of the takemakers out there.
So I am not on an island.
Nobody can understand what this dude is doing.
He reportedly turned down a five-year, $175 million deal.
Like all QBs ever, that would have made him the highest paid quarterback in QB history.
That's the most tired comment of all time.
But it would have done it.
He said, nah. He was looking for a four-year deal and he wanted to be
paid about 45 million in that final year of the deal. Okay. There's a whole lot of reasoning to
that. We will get to it. I'm just going to say this dude is trying to play his way to Jacksonville
with all this nonsense. He is going to screw up a good thing. This is hopeless,
hopeless for Dak and Dallas.
Yeah. And I've been on record saying, I don't think Dallas values him. And it's interesting how we talk about value because I said that I don't think they value him like other teams have
valued their franchise guys. And the reason I say that is because if they did, they just kind of
pay him, right? I mean, everyone else seems to work it out. The Eagles worked out Wentz,
Rams worked out Goff. I promise you the Chiefs will work out a way to pay Pat Mahomes.
Russell Wilson said, hey, I want a new contract by April 15th. And then one week later, guess what?
He got a new contract.
That was a couple years ago now.
Teams make it work.
And the Cowboys, for whatever reason, haven't made it work.
Even though this report about the deal is – there's some skepticism about whether
or not this deal was given to him.
But nonetheless, the sticking point remains, Gabe, is the number of years on the deal. Cowboys want five. Dak's management wants four. And I get it, right? They want to
be able to hit franchisees sooner. And there doesn't need to be any meaning in the middle.
And to your point about Dak believing what his value is, right? What is your value? And there's
something to consider here. So as a former player, I am rooting for Dak Prescott to get all the money
he can get. Of course. Of course I am.
But I get it as like a football fan and as someone who looks at how teams are being built,
you cannot pay Dak Prescott that amount of money and probably win.
You just can't.
He's not the guy, at least we've seen yet, that can just take over multiple weeks and
get you to the Super Bowl.
He's not that guy yet.
He might be.
He could be.
multiple weeks and get you to Super Bowl.
He's not that guy yet.
He might be.
He could be.
But so far, when everything breaks down, he has not been the guy to lead the Cowboys to something special yet.
When things are going well, the defense is playing well, the running game, the O-line,
Dak's great.
Now, look, you put him with all the weapons.
He's a brand new coach.
He's more offensive-minded.
And it should be a place for him to succeed.
But again, I just don't know how much Dallas would regret not signing him to a long-term
contract because they haven't made it work yet.
And I know you guys think I'm crazy that, you know, July 15th is deadline.
I get it.
But quarterbacks typically don't go this long, especially ones that teams believe in 100%
and deep in their soul can lead into a Super Bowl.
They get those guys signed man yeah I mean this dude is not we've talked about this he is not understanding the fact
that the position of Dallas Cowboys quarterback is what made him worth arguably 175 million he
wants more than that but or a better version of that but I mean come on man they found
Tony Romo they found Dak Prescott these guys weren't guaranteed you know superstars in this
league and maybe wouldn't or couldn't be superstars anywhere else but behind that line with those
coaches so to me it's just totally insane this reminds me of remember this here we go with the
pop culture you're just gonna be a whiff on your part but remember when joey uh was the spinoff from friends and they tried to turn
joey into a star by himself okay well that happened you were probably still a teenager
that happened it was a bomb you couldn't make a whole thing out of joey because he was just part
of a team and he wasn't even the best part of the team he was just a pretty good part of the team
and when he tried to prove he could do it on his own, it failed.
That's what would happen here.
Like Dak Prescott can't win playoff games in Dallas.
So what?
He's going to go build a franchise in Jacksonville and win?
Come on.
Jennifer Aniston has not failed as a solo.
I'll tell you that.
No, because she's the superstar.
I know.
She'd be the offensive lineman.
She's one of your guys.
She's to Ron Smith and Zach Martin.
And he plays,
he played with,
with at least two Hall of Famers and potentially a third.
I mean,
you know,
Frederick left now he retired,
but he's played three Hall of Famers potentially for his entire career now.
So far,
I will say though,
Gabe,
it's not really Dak Prescott's prerogative to make sure the Cowboys, quote, quote, save money with him.
Like, I understand you can factor in the endorsements and the value of being the Cowboys quarterback, but he shouldn't take like $28 million when he can get $33 because of those reasons.
Teams, in my opinion, when they say they're going to invest the money back in the team, don't do it.
Keep the money to themselves.
The problem for the Cowboys cap-wise is they paid a running back,
they paid an off-the-ball linebacker a ton of money before securing their quarterback.
Dak should not have to fix the Cowboys cap issues.
So I say Dak should get all he wants.
I understand the team saying, look, we're not going to pay him as much as he wants,
and the years is a problem. But Dak should in no way wants. I understand the team saying, look, we're not going to pay him as much as he wants. And the years is a problem.
But Dak should in no way take less to help the team out.
No, I agree with that always for the same reasons you just laid out.
I want to just two points of business before we move on to something too stupid to imagine.
The reason, as I understand it, the reason that he wants a four-year deal instead of a five-year deal has to do with the league sort of
renegotiating its rights deals so more money being available the cap changing but also he would then
be a free agent at 30 you know in 2024 if he got this four-year extension is that that makes sense
to you i mean like is that good agent thing i i think the reason think the reason why is most teams extend their rookie quarterbacks
a year before they're up for contract.
So that five-year deal is really four years of new money.
So the Cowboys are approaching this and saying,
look, we're doing the same thing everyone else is doing.
And Dak's people are saying, no, you're not,
because we didn't get a deal done before his last season.
So you're adding on five new years where Carson Wentz gets four, Jared Goff gets four,
Pat Mahomes might get 17 years. I don't know. But that's why there's this holdup. And Todd
France's agent, I believe that's his agent, is really tough negotiator. And he's the sticking
point. So look, I said this months ago. This feels like a Cousins-Redskins situation where no one's going to budge.
They'll play another franchise tag, which isn't really helpful for anybody
because the Cowboys can't plan out their cap for the future.
What if Dak doesn't play as well?
Where does he have a home next year?
The new CBA looming, the new salary cap, I should say, that the CBA has done,
is really interesting here because a lot of people have said,
hey, look, hold out until next year.
The money should skyrocket up.
But because of coronavirus, I don't know if the cap's going to go up as much.
It might be prudent to sign a deal now because maybe the cap goes down.
I think that's a very slight chance because if the games still get played,
remember, the NFL's revenue is based a lot on
the tv deals college football is the opposite college football is based a lot on in-person
suites and tickets and booster club fees nfl so the nfl plays which i expect they do the cap should
probably still continue to rise or at least stay flat so that's something to consider for dac too
is like hey man you might as well sign a deal now.
The cap might take a hit for a couple of years, like we're seeing in baseball and in basketball.
I don't think that's much consideration for him,
but something else to think about when we discuss what Dak should or shouldn't do.
Yeah, I mean, I just think he should be considering the fact that
he'll never have a better situation than the one he's in.
Probably not, no.
Every guy thinks that they're the secret sauce
um somebody should whisper in his ear that maybe he's not and he's the benefactor of a pretty good
situation and he should take 175 million be happy and go try to win a super bowl but you know i
don't touch that man's money dac and new england next year well see belichick i bet you wouldn't
touch him i i bet he would just be like, oh, you're not any good, dude.
Well, not for that salary.
No.
No, he was Stidham.
Why does he need Dak Prescott?
He's got Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer.
All right, Jeff, I'm going to sort of loosely stay in Dallas here
because part of this story involves Jerry Jones.
By the way, you may be hearing my kids in the background every now and then. Corona. That's how life works now. Grandma's here taking
care of them. Best we could do. No nanny today. All right. Listen, Adam Schefter posted something
he's been posting a lot lately. More provocative stuff from the ESPN's news guy. He posted a
picture of LeBron James next to Gronk and Travis Kelsey and posed the question,
could he make the leap to the NFL?
Okay, that obviously blew up.
Everyone was talking about it.
I, of course, loved this, and we'll get to that why.
But it got LeBron to bring up the fact that in 2011, apparently Jerry Jones actually offered
him a contract.
We have no idea how serious that was, what it was for, what he would have done.
But it was while the NBA was dealing with a lockout. Apparently the Cowboys considered
signing LeBron. So that's serious enough stuff for me to say to you, Jeff. Not even a question,
just a statement. LeBron James could absolutely 100% make plays in the NFL right now today if
someone signed him. I'm not trolling you this is truly how i feel and anyone
who feels otherwise is some sort of football purist geek who's trying to argue something
they can't possibly believe the greatest athlete alive could play in the nfl period so i guess the
question is what does make plays mean like is he a guy just throw the ball up in the red zone too
is he at every down tight end is he playing tight is he playing defensive end like what's he what's
i'm not gonna put him on travis kelsey's level but he's better than some of the tight ends who
play for some teams in the nfl he's like a very capable nfl tight end oh boy i don't even know
where to begin on this begin with why is that so crazy to hear i
think well he's like 38 years old i mean he's 35 and he's the best athlete on the planet he'll be
he'll be just beat to shit when he gets the nfl field i i think people always point to the
flopping stuff in the nba i don't care that that's that's part of the game now like doesn't make he
means not tough i think there's a different physicality in the the NFL game that he is not used to in the NBA.
And that's something he's going to have to deal with and get used to.
Like, you get used to it.
Even us, when we go back to training camp, we get used to hitting again.
Like, there's a part of that process that LeBron hasn't done since he was in high school as a junior playing against little 5'9 cornerbacks like he's going to play against actual big defensive
linemen and defensive ends and and and linebackers and safeties it's not going to be easy now the
idea is can you put him at like you put him out by himself on the left put three receivers on the
right and line up on the corner and say hey go catch the ball sure you can but there's going to
be a part of that which is the physicality from the corner trying to jam LeBron
James to get the ball out of the scrimmage. I mean, there's things
to discuss here. Can he make plays
or could he have? Yes. I think if he was 21,
22, sure. At 35,
Gabe, I don't
know, but I will say the discussion about
Doc Rivers said he could
be the greatest of all time. Doc,
get the hell out of here. Come on, man.
The idea that because
he was All-State
as a sophomore
then determines
he's going to be
an NFL All-Pro
and a legend forever
is ridiculous.
Stop using that argument,
everyone.
We don't,
there's plenty of guys
that were great in high school
that never panned out
to be great in the NFL,
never even made the NFL.
Like,
let's calm down
with that whole crazy topic.
But Gabe,
can he,
if you were to put the pads on
for this training camp,
could he make plays? I mean, theoretically, yeah, I don't think, I think he just would get beat up.
Okay. I'll be more specific. Tom, excuse me, LeBron James. I almost said Tom Brady because
I was thinking greatest of all time. And that's what you guys like to call him. LeBron James,
the greatest of all time playing football. What you just described is completely unstoppable.
I just would like to, this is part of the Schefter post.
He's six foot nine.
So he's taller than Gronkowski or Kelsey.
He's weighs 250.
So he walks around a little lighter than both those guys.
I'm sure if LeBron James wanted to, he could pack on 10 pounds of muscle easily or just
pad.
He could just get some pudding if he stopped eating like a perfect machine.
He ran a 4'6", 40, which is faster than either of those two guys. And he has a 40 inch vertical,
which is four inches bigger than in either of those guys. So he's taller. He has more reach.
He's faster. He jumps higher. He could weigh the same amount if he wanted to. I mean, nobody like
runs offenses the way they used to anyway. If you go four wide, why,
who's covering LeBron James? Which guy on the field is going to stop him from catching the ball?
It's obviously tough, but I mean, I think that, you know, that's the thing about, about
route running is that, you know, a defensive back can touch you and they can move you off your spot.
And LeBron is so big, A, he won't get away with pushing off anyone
because they'll see him do it.
But I think, Gabe, we generally underestimate the physicalness of playing football.
And I'm not saying that it's some game that's magically physical
and LeBron can never handle it.
I'm saying that route running, precision of that type,
he's going to be thrown off his game getting hit off the line of scrimmage.
Okay, fine.
And so that'll happen a few times.
And then he'll be LeBron James,
the greatest athlete alive,
and he'll learn how to adjust to that.
He takes contact nonstop on the basketball.
I mean, yeah, I mean, look,
look, can you line him up
and go on a situation and throw the ball up to him?
Sure.
That's football.
You just described offense.
I'm fine with the idea that he can do that.
But is he going to be this superstar?
No.
I didn't claim he was going to be Randy Moss.
But can't you say this about seven NBA players?
Yeah.
All the tall, physical guys, you say, yeah, put pads on them,
and they can go make a play at tight end.
You can say that about a bunch of guys. That's why I think it's my thing it's like i love for them to try to be really fun if there was
some crossover thing where like lebron after the season just put on some pads for the rams and saw
if he could get after a little bit but wait yes for the record i think lebron would be better than
those other guys but if you pick a few other guys who are built sort of like him and there aren't
many guys on earth who are built like lebron james but if you find a few of the other guys who are built sort of like him and there aren't many guys on earth who are built like lebron james but if you find a few of the other guys and you find out at one time they were pretty
good at football and they would want to play football and they don't mind contact yeah i think
they probably could make plays i think they could get in the league i mean it's not an insult to
football to say this no this is just the most like coronavirus 2020 conversation because there is no really winner or loser in this
discussion like i think i'm right you think you're right people are gonna listen to this they're
gonna pick a side no one's gonna be convinced i'm like i'm not you i'm you haven't convinced me
one way i haven't convinced you one way it feels like just the most but non-sports i'm not even
making the argument that i see a lot of people making on Twitter, which is like, he played high school football.
I don't care.
Everyone who played professional sports was the best player at two or three sports in their school.
All these people on Twitter from Ohio are like, did you watch him play high school football?
Who cares?
I don't care.
I watch his – my favorite example of that, there's a guy named Jeff Byers.
Jeff was offensive lineman out of Colorado.
He was my year, 2004.
Dude, he won National Gatorade Player of the Year as an offensive lineman.
He pancaked three dudes every play.
Every play.
He played a little bit of pro ball.
That was it.
There's no guarantee that your high school film will make you be an NFL superstar.
Now, obviously, LeBron is probably the most physically gifted basketball player ever.
So there's a little bit of a comparison you can make there that isn't really Jeff Beyers.
But there's just this idea that he's going to go out and play.
I don't think he can just go out there and play.
I think, take this a little too seriously for a second here.
can just go out there and play i think to take this a little too seriously for a second here so we agree physically he has sort of size speed and strength that is almost unrivaled on planet
earth we know that he's freakishly competitive and hard working like that's unquestioned we also
know that he is has a photographic memory he is a he is a freakishly smart human
when it comes to memorizing plays
and situational sports, right?
So he can tell you exactly
where everyone was on the court
at any given play
at any point in his career.
He's unbelievably esoteric
with this stuff.
So the complexity of the game
would be nothing for him.
He would memorize a playbook like that.
So all we're talking about is whether the most... I'm not worried about him physically i'm not worried about him if he memorized a playbook he can line up a wide receiver go run a go route but so what are
you saying what's the obstacle what would keep him from being a pretty good player the physicality of
the game and just be like doing the practices getting hit like if you just literally if you
literally gave if you literally gave,
if your literal definition of him playing in the NFL is like,
hey, buddy, stand on the sidelines.
We'll put you in two plays a game and you just go catch the ball.
Can he do that?
I will concede he can attempt to do it and it may or may not work.
But the idea that he can just be like an every down player and go through training camp at his age, not going to happen.
Okay.
Chad Otocinco, he could do it,
but not LeBron James.
There's just so many guys who took hits
and are total knuckleheads.
There's also just a different footwork in football
than there is in the NBA.
I just don't think it's as simple as you think it is.
I'm not saying it's simple.
I'm saying the greatest athlete on the planet is good enough to do it at an average NFL level.
I'm not claiming it's simple.
I'm claiming he is exceptional.
Average is pretty good.
Average is pretty good.
And not 35.
At 23, like Zuri just asked?
Sure.
23, I give you more runaway.
I think he could have done it at 23.
Oh, this isn't a debate.
If LeBron James had chosen at 23 to play in the NFL,
he's better than Antonio Gates
and Tony Gonzalez. I mean,
why would we even be talking about this if he'd started
this at 22, 23?
Any single person who's going to argue
that is insane.
Obviously, he would have been the greatest tight end ever
if he'd played tight end the whole time.
That's
fair
possibly.
I'm not going to concede that point to you.
Well, I'm going to leave it there,
and I'm going to move the line instead.
Our little over-under game
where we make up silly things to bet on.
You did get a little bit of real betting in,
I assume, during the match.
No, I didn't.
No, I didn't.
I should have.
No? No bets?
No, I just didn't. No, I didn't. I should have. No, no bets. No, I just did.
I just didn't.
You should have faded Brady.
I would have.
You would have made some money.
I guess I would have.
Yeah.
No, I didn't.
I didn't bet at all.
I didn't bet all this weekend.
I should have.
All right.
I'm sad.
Well, let's let's talk about betting a little bit in the context of football.
When the game comes back, there's a new rule or there's discussion of a new rule that you're
going to have to clarify for me. But I want to know weekly bad bets caused by this new 4th and 15 rule per week over under 1.5.
I see a lot of guys getting burned by this on their bets.
Yeah, so the conversion rate on 4th and 15 is about the same as onside kick.
So it kind of is kind of negligible about doing, you know, it's safer to do the fourth and 15 thing.
Well, oh, there's going to be, oh, way over, man.
I mean, fourth and 15, there's going to be some times, you know,
if you get an onside kick, you then have to obviously get in your formation
and go, like if you get a fourth and 15, like that's soul crushing
to the defense to be able to get that.
And maybe you break a tackle and get even longer, right?
I mean, you know, an onside kick is the ball's caught.
Typically, you're down right there.
You can break a tackle and score a touchdown, get a field goal range.
You can allow yourself to get a field goal range,
kick a field goal, and then the other team gets the ball back
and scores a touchdown, and the overhits, right?
So I'd say bad bets of the season over one and a half bad bets
because of that. Did you see, by the way, speaking and a half uh bad bets because of that did you see by the way speaking
of all-time bad bets the race the horse race from this weekend where the jockey fell off the horse
is about to cross the finish line and lost the race i did not see that uh it doesn't count if
you don't make it across the finish correct our old our old company tweeted that out that was very
funny that does sound nice.
You know, obviously the horses would do better without a guy on their back.
So it's kind of an unfair advantage to not have a guy on your back.
The horse just stopped.
Oh, he stopped doing his thing?
Yeah, he just was like, screw this, I'm out.
I don't have anyone on me anymore.
Yeah, I guess.
Guy stops whipping you.
You aren't going to run as fast.
Okay, so you're saying that you agree the 4th and 15 rule is going to screw up a lot of bets this season.
Oh, 100%.
Did we clarify?
I don't know who's listening to this show and doesn't understand that this rule is proposed.
But instead of onside kicks, you would get a 4th and 15 from your own what yard line?
The 25.
Yeah.
If you convert, you just get the ball where you convert at and you just continue on.
Yeah, and if you don't, then the other team takes over at your 25,
which means that immediately they're in field goal range
and immediately any kind of broken play could turn into a touchdown,
which means your spreads and your over-unders are going to be a nightmare.
Correct.
Fair enough.
Here's what I want to know because he jumped on Twitter this weekend.
It seemed like the most orchestrated PR move of all time.
It was coinciding with his brother playing this golf thing with Tom Brady.
I want to know times Eli Manning has met the person tweeting for him over under 0.5.
Oh, zero times.
I tweeted this out yesterday and people kind of got upset because it was very clear that
Eli had most of his tweets were sponsored and tweeted out by a PR guy.
There were some funny ones out by a PR guy.
There were some funny ones that fit Eli's personality.
Eli is funny, but your first day on Twitter,
you don't hit a home run your first day on Twitter.
You bunt, you strike out. Everything he tweeted out was perfect, on time, on rhythm.
100%, in my opinion, all tweeted out by, I think it was Frank Redhot,
all tweeted out by whoever runs their PR department.
Yeah, he's got someone writing jokes.
They're pre-approved. There's some sort
of a system where he's reading them and saying
yeah, yeah, yeah, that one's good. Go for that.
100%. Okay.
So then I'm going to get a little more controversial.
Tom Brady. No chance
in hell he's writing his tweets.
I don't look at his tweets very often
I need to take a look at this
I'm not surprised that you
There's
Zero percent chance
That's Tom Brady
Tom Brady does Instagram I think
I follow him on Instagram
He might write the caption from time to time
When it's important
He is not writing tweets
Yeah like
He's not writing in like
Pants 1 and that social distancing Like, like he's not writing in like pants one and I'm supposed to just say, I guess
like that's not happening.
He's not writing any of it.
No, there's not.
Yeah.
There's, he's not.
For anyone out there who's like, I used to hate this guy, but it's good to see he has
a sense of humor.
There's no way that he's doing a, a tongue out winking emoji to Eli Manning.
No, there's no way he's writing hilarious,
self-deprecating jokes about Eli Manning in responses. There's no way that all those back
and forths are authentic. Guys, social media, I've been at this a long time. I was on Twitter,
you know, when it was me and Ashton Kutcher and Shaq. That was it. I promise you, it is not the guys doing it in a lot of these cases.
There's just too much at stake now.
They aren't screwing around.
They aren't being funny on their own time.
They have got a team of people doing this.
Lesser stars, of course that's them.
That's why it's so cool.
But there's like this elite group.
Yeah, that's Jeff.
Jeff's the one tweeting those funny Rex Chapman videos
and TikToks with his wife and kids.
That's Jeff.
But if Jeff had already made $450 million playing football,
he wouldn't be tweeting.
I've wanted to hire someone to help me with social media.
I just, I'm not paying for that.
I'm not doing it.
Okay, quickly here.
References toordan love as the
new tasem hill on this very podcast next season 1.5 over under i just don't you know what we're
gonna have a new rule now for the rest of the year me you zuri and matt we're just not gonna
mention tasem hill's name anymore i like we're gonna come up with and we're gonna come up with
some sort of um some sort of something to replace him.
Some new name.
We don't have to say his name anymore.
I've never seen more vigor and excitement for a utility player in my life of any sport whatsoever.
Any sport whatsoever.
The amount of times the Saints talk about a guy who's a third-string quarterback,
who played 22% of their snaps last year,
who when Teddy Bridgewater went out through the ball one time,
he's 13 passes in his career.
13 in his career, okay?
I guess the camera should be, there we go.
13 passes in his career, okay?
Like, I don't understand the fervor
with which people talk about Taysom Hill.
It is nothing to do with football.
People just seem to like the guy.
They like the idea of the guy.
They like the human.
And for some reason, they're not rooting against him
like they used to root against my boy Tim Tebow.
I don't get it either, but Jordan Love,
apparently the reason we're talking about this is getting compared to him
because I guess...
We're not mentioning Taysom Hill's name anymore.
Well, he who shall not be mentioned is being compared to jordan love the
packers rookie because apparently the packers have not ruled out the possibility of using their
first round quarterback pick the guy who's meant to replace iron rogers they might use him as a
swiss army knife like they do with he who shall not be made's just like, it's like a double Jeff Schwartz troll.
This is like,
just the,
just shoot me in the face.
We've discussed Taysom Hill and Jordan Love in the same topic this year.
I'm just going to retire from this podcast.
All right.
Well,
if you retire from this podcast, I've got a possible extra job for you.
All right.
It turns out Mike Singletary.
Yes.
That Mike Singletary, that mike singletary legendary
player former coach pretty successful coach at times in his nfl career um began taking over uh
coaching high school football and apparently and i'm really not trying to poop on him but this is
just reading you facts here apparently he went 1 and 21 as the coach of Trinity Christian Academy, Addison.
That is the name of the school.
I don't know anything more about this story.
I want to be careful because maybe there's something about this school
that makes it hard for them to win.
Maybe there's something up with the – I don't know.
How is it possible that a guy who coached in the NFL
went one in 21 coaching high school football?
You mean the coach who wasn't good in the NFL?
Oh, come on. Couldn't coach high school football. You mean the coach who wasn't good in the NFL? Oh, come on.
Couldn't coach high school.
I read about it.
I guess they were good for a little bit, then went poor,
and he did not make them obviously better.
Oh, I would definitely be better than him.
I would hire the right people.
I'm a great motivator.
We run the ball very well.
We play some solid defense.
We throw some trick plays in there.
Palisades Dolphins would be in great, great shape if Jeff Schwartz led them.
So 2-20 over the course of a couple seasons?
What are we looking at?
What's our record in Palisades?
I'd be, I mean, conservatively like 21-1.
You think you flip the whole thing, 21-2?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I'd be the best.
I'd be a – I actually would be a great – I coach.
I coach high school baseball in South Carolina.
We were upper state champions.
Okay.
I was a pitching coach.
We sent three pitchers to college that year.
I mean, Jeff Schwartz, it's what I do.
I coach.
I taught my wife how to throw a spotter yesterday.
I'm a good coach, man.
What can I say?
I have the face for coaching.
Did you just say that you were the northern part of southern – you were northern South Carolinas? What the hell did you just say that you were the northern part of southern you were northern upper
south carolinas what the hell did you just say yeah with this so it's like there's like so they
split south i was in south carolina they split south carolina like they have an upper and a
lower region so we won the upper we played the team in the lower i was actually in minnesota
when we had that that weekend and we lost i think think we won one of two games, but one of three games we lost.
But yeah, so we didn't win the overall state championship.
We were upper state champions.
But is that upper, like not northern, just?
Well, like northern South Carolina.
Yeah, you're the north South Carolina champions.
Yeah, upper.
Yeah, I'm only just upper.
So you are, just to make sure we have all the accolades you are in the jewish athlete hall of fame southern california jewish athlete hall of
fame you are the northern southern i can't even say it the northern south carolina high school
baseball champions upper south carolina region. Uh-huh. Yeah.
I'm trying to look at like, I'm trying to find the actual, but yeah, we were upper state
champs.
All right.
Well.
Whatever that means.
I suggest that you think about coaching.
I think if the bar is set at one and 21, you can exceed that to make it official.
So Zuri can do that little
sound, you're saying you would go over under 15.5 wins
in two seasons as a head coach.
You'd go over.
Yes.
Yes.
I just learned that there is now going to be a realignment
in South Carolina.
So my upper state championship thing might be thrown out
a little bit.
Oh, I'm worried.
But you live in north carolina maybe
you should go for southern north carolina champions the lower north carolina champions
i'll get on that um yeah i probably should i'm looking to find like an actual map of like of
where the delineation is i'm very curious curious. Now, I never really have thought about this
until you brought it up.
Well, you know, no place better to think about it
than the 55th minute of this show.
I'll just end on, from my perspective,
on a, I guess, a semi-serious like question to you
because it'd be silly not to ask.
As of today, Memorial Day, May 25 25th with over a month until training camp would
even open several more weeks until the season what what do you think are we starting on time or not
NFL will start on time yeah um one of the things I'm seeing now with the NBA trying to get back
and the NBA is gonna it's taking forever they have 60 more days from today. They want to get back end of July.
The NBA is dealing with, in my opinion, they're battling with the PR of this return, right?
Figuring out how to manage the idea that players might get sick, staff might get sick, and how do they manage the PR hit from that?
The NFL doesn't care about that, in my opinion.
They just don't.
And if there was one league that I could say, hey, I'll put my money on them getting back on the field, it would be the NFL. The NFL doesn't care about that, in my opinion. They just don't. And if there was one league that I could say,
hey, I'll put my money on them getting back on the field,
it would be the NFL.
The NFL doesn't care.
The NFL's going to play.
If guys get sick, they'll just quarantine them.
If coaches get sick, they'll quarantine them.
They'll just keep playing.
It's a machine. The NBA is too worried about what social media says,
and the players have a very strong union.
The NFL players, they're going to play.
They need the money.
So the NFL is coming back on time, in my opinion.
Look, we've seen now in two states that have restrictive,
kind of restrictive in nature of social movement right now,
California and New York, have both said, we're open for sports.
Come back.
The governor Cuomo said, hey, Bills, training camp on time.
Los Angeles, Newsom, hey, we're open for sports.
So I think sports are going to come back.
There's so much money involved.
Do the college side, man.
How much money is involved if these schools can't play this year?
So I think they're going to at least start maybe Thanksgiving, December.
There's a little reconsideration.
But I think once the ship sets sail, Gabe, it ain't turning around.
All right.
Well, I hope everyone is safe, but I really, really hope you're right
because I want football.
I can't live without a fantasy season.
I need that job.
I need my job to continue.
So I'm selfishly rooting for football to be back.
All right.
Well, you did a good job today.
I had fun listening to you. So I'm selfishly rooting for football to be back. All right. Well, you did a good job today. I had fun listening to you.
Thank you.
I hope we can get over
the fact that we just
agree to disagree
on LeBron James
and his NFL success.
But, you know,
he made us smarter
on some other things.
I have to say, man,
last time I went with this,
Tom Brady looked so good
yesterday.
He just looked chiseled.
Just his clothes fit well.
What a great man. All right, guys. Thank you for joining clothes fit well. What a great man.
All right, guys.
Thank you for joining us.
Hope you have a great week.
If you have questions, comments, concerns,
you know where to find me,
at Jeff Schwartz on Twitter.
I have a website, by the way,
schwartzNFL.com.
You can go there as well.
We'll be back next week.
Look, we still have football topics.
The football's rolling along.
I hope you guys have a great week
getting back to kind of a normal society.
Gabe, last thing, by the way. I know we're going long here. Can we just eliminate the term new normal? Going along, I hope you guys have a great week getting back to kind of a normal society.
Last thing, by the way, I know we're going along here.
Can we just eliminate the term new normal?
I can't stand that term.
My wife said it to me last night and I was like, babe, this is not the new normal.
A new normal would signify that we're never going back to something else.
It's just like we're doing, this will be over hopefully in a year or two.
Let's not say this new normal.
Hope everyone stays safe out there, enjoys themselves.
Talk to you guys next week.
