it's monday october 23rd i'm jeff schwartz and this is jeff schwartz of smart and you were live

players i do three each week if they'll go more or less than their price per projection,
you can win up to 25 times your money on any entry.
We'll be making my selections for a football game tonight between the
Vikings and the 49ers at the end of the episode.
So stick around.
Matthew, we are 23-10-2.
That's our official record.
However, on the show, we are 23-7, Patriots 1 and Broncos.
Because the Patriots, we're 0-3 wagering on the Patriots games.
And we bet the Broncos plus 3 or minus 3 on the road against the Bears.
More importantly, though, it's now seven weeks.
We're good this year.
It has not always been the case.
Again, we strive at the end of the year to get back to 500.
That has been the case each and every year.
We're doing a good job.
We're reading the room because this week teams that had 70% of tickets or more,
one in seven against the spread.
Like, we're kind of reading the room, right?
We're taking the ugly ones.
But, you know, the contest that I am in, that we are in –
I should say that we are in together – is not the one in Vegas.
I might – what's funny is that I've always said, I did it one time.
Spent $1,000 to finish 500.
I'm like, you know what?
I'm not going to do it this time because we're not going to get that good.
And I didn't do it.
I'm on a contest with an offshore.
I paid money for it, not $1,000.
We're tied for 64th right now.
There are about 30 entries tied with 24 points.
So the two ties
do you have a point for the ties and matt we're we're kicking ass so far man i like i like it
it's unreal man and it's funny the one i felt best about was the the chargers uh who we'll get
to in a second they did not cover it never even felt like it was close like the first half i was
like we're good and then even in the third quarter i think you were like yep the chiefs are going to win by a field goal uh but justin empty calories
herbert once again couldn't couldn't do anything in the second half um so we'll get to him but
a great week great call by you on seattle that was one that i was as the game was sort of going on
the seahawks still haven't looked right um that was a great call by you that i was really nervous about uh and indy we got that one was that i when we were i mean we text the whole
day sunday it's the best but in when when the uh so for those who weren't betting on that disgusting
game uh the browns were up by one right with like i don, I don't know, the game was over, but they were going for the two
so they could get up to three.
And Jeff and I were having a conversation of like,
wait, did we get three or three and a half?
Because Watson hadn't been ruled in the game yet.
So we were just sort of like, whatever,
we'll take the three.
And as we were texting about that,
the Browns went for two and didn't get it.
And we were like, we're good.
It doesn't matter.
It didn't matter.
It did not matter.
One and a half. We covered.
So that was, that was one that never happens.
You're always on the wrong side of the exchange. We were on the right side.
Matt, I will have to say, buddy,
you're going to have to be here every Friday from now moving forward. I,
the baby, I don't care. So whatever I I'll talk to Ivy if I need to,
but you cannot just miss Fridays anymore.
Like, I know that's coming soon.
We talked about this on Friday.
But it feels like at this point, if you were to leave me, we're going to lose. And I don't think you want to be responsible for the losing that happens when you're gone.
So, you know, I think.
We've got a field experiment.
Your Pac- 12 picks have sucked
the thing about gambling and we'll get to the recap of this past weekend i promise
is um it just can the the process right like it you have to have a process and to it. And I know that we've talked about this before in our show,
and there's been years when we've started really bad,
almost the opposite.
I think last year,
two years ago,
we started like 10 and 23,
the opposite,
right?
Of this is like,
you have to do with your process,
even though you might not win the wager.
If you're,
do you think your process is good?
Obviously there are times when your process just stinks and we've admitted
that,
but like when I have a UCLA running back to get over 104 yards,
and he has 78 halftime, Matt,
and then gets two more carries the rest of the game,
I sort of feel like the process was right.
You know what I mean?
Like, he was on track for over 100 yards,
and he just didn't play in the second half.
I mean, previously, previous game, he had 20 carries.
He had 30 carries the game before that.
You know, Oregon, I took Oregon, which I rarely do,
and they allowed two touchdowns, had over 10 yards to play on offense
and didn't cover them.
It's like, what do you do, man?
Like, that's just – it's gambling, and it sucks.
But in the NFL, though, we're doing really well.
I'll be back with – how about this one?
I'll tell you right now.
I'll give you a preview.
I'm going to go with – you're going to hate this.
Washington, who just barely beat Arizona State, won a game without scoring off you a preview. I'm going to go with – you're going to hate this. Washington, who just barely beat Arizona State,
won a game without scoring off at a touchdown.
They're on the road at Stanford.
They're laying 26 right now.
I'm betting Washington this weekend.
I'm telling you right now.
I think a good number is back.
Hey, when I conference, I actually – I got this number to make sure we know.
Road favorites of 24 points or more in conference play.
The Pac-12 has begun, right, since 2011.
9-3 against the spread for the team who's favored.
If you're bad, you're bad.
Man.
But let's talk about the good NFL teams because there's some good in the NFL.
There's a lot of mid, but there are some good in the NFL.
Let's talk about in the NFL. There's a lot of mid, but there are some good in the NFL. Let's talk about it.
Yeah, well, I think we've reached the point of the season
where we realize, people like me realize,
we make shows like this and this show,
and we all come up with all these things to talk about,
and we talk about all these exciting, oh, Tua, oh, you know,
like what about the Bills?
What about the Lions?
What about, at the end of the day, it's week,
it's almost halfway through the season here,
going into week eight,
and the Chiefs and the Eagles are better than everyone.
And I feel kind of dumb.
Like, I honestly do.
I feel like we've talked,
I've talked myself into a lot of different things.
We were right about the Lions this week.
But, you know, I I was I don't know I
just kind of this doesn't usually happen especially with the Eagles the Chiefs make a bit more sense
to me obviously because not too much has changed but I guess like what's going on here like how is
it so I mean we the Eagles the Eagles success is a little bit different but for the Chiefs like
it's just like is is this the new is this where we
are now with the chiefs is that every year we just have to assume they're just going to
be the best team in the afc and win the super bowl like are we at that level with this team
like we were with the patriots a few years ago i think we are because this is the best team they've
had right like this is the best overall team their defense has yet to allow over 20 points in a game their defense they allowed a pick six they lost 21 to whatever it
was into lions but that was a pick six they had 14 points their defense is the best it's been under
patrick mahomes and you're asking the chiefs to just be a little bit better on offense a little
bit better on sunday right now of course the chargers don't ever cover travis kelsey which
is mind-blowing to me but we saw an mvs sighting where Shee Rice had a touchdown McCall Hardman gets traded back has a
long punt return to basically ice the game and then also first down I believe on that same drive
so we're starting to see the offense start to click in and if you're asking me well
what you know what do the Chiefs need to do to get better was their offense, which again was always going to get better, right, Matt?
And on the Eagles side, you know, their offense, again, hurts.
The turnover thing is a little bit alarming.
Like there's just weird turnovers happening,
every little bad turnover luck.
And I think some offense line injuries are kind of slowing things down a
little bit.
But the Eagles and Chiefs are built from the middle out, right?
Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, Joe Tooney, right?
Jason Kelsey, Landon Dickerson, and Jerkins is out right now.
Even if you would put Lane in there and Malata,
and you put Donovan Smith and Jawan Taylor.
And then on defense, right, it's Jalen Carter.
It's Jordan Davis.
It's Flexer Cox.
It's Sweat.
It's Redick.
It's Chris Jones, right?
It's all the young guys that they have.
The Charles, who they just got back from the Niners this week, played well.
They're built from the inside out, man.
And when you're built from the inside out, you get a chance each week.
And then you add in the quarterback play, the play calling,
the playmakers around the field, and they're going to be in every game.
And now that they've won a lot, which the Chiefs have won more than the Eagles,
but the Eagles understand now sort of the rhythm of the season, right?
They understand that, you know, things might not always be great,
but you know if we get back to what we do, we're going to win a lot of football games.
And so I think that right now, look, the favorites, I think,
to be back in the Super Bowl are these two teams.
I think there's no question about it.
Obviously, things change and whatnot.
And the NFC doesn't feel very wide open.
The AFC, I think, depending on how the Bengals play against the Niners
on this Sunday, I'm kind of curious about that.
We might see – I might feel a little bit better about the Bengals
being in this spot.
But they're the best, man.
And there's no, I think, other way to put it right now.
I will say, though, the Ravens are, I think,
are like on the heels of the Chiefs.
Huh.
I need to see a little bit of consistency.
Like, that was great.
That was great.
That was the best they looked all season.
But I think when they are playing the best, which is, again,
they look the best this season, they're they're a good a good football team man
i mean lamar looked like more comfortable the offense the play calling looked looked better
the play action pass stuff looked better it was an impressive performance by the ravens but kansas
city again the eagles again um they're the favorites right now for good reason i think
they know what to do they went from the inside out they're physical they're the favorites right now for good reason i think they know what to do
they went from the inside out they're physical they're well coached uh you know the everyone's
all angry about the uh the the tush push today the eagles are the best at it why would you ban
to me only one team is really good at like no one else is good at it just the eagles like they have
a cheat code on that play you don't want how to stop that play be better on third down don't allow fourth and one right
basically you know i mean like so the eagles i think are less um less perfect than the chiefs
right now like there's some issues i think they're still lingering there but kansas city look good
man i mean the chargers are again as you mentioned it would you call herbert empty calorie
calories yeah yeah it uh the chargers always play them tough as i mentioned we mentioned on the show
friday i mean in the five previous games that um herbert and homes have played you know none had
been more than six points and the chargers had you know the two overtime games and i think you
said the most right zero of the games were more than three points in either direction at the end of regulation.
And this game was a 14-point win for the Chiefs.
Yeah.
So much to react to there.
I want to go back to the tush-push thing because you're right.
I had the same exact thought watching that game where it's like, if everyone could do this,
everyone would do it.
But the Eagles specifically have cracked it.
The giants famously injured themselves doing that play.
The rest of the league,
you look around and fourth and one is an automatic.
It's close.
The,
the bills had,
had,
had one sort of tush push ish play.
There were a few other teams that did it.
I mean,
the Steelers,
the Steelers tried it.
The Steelers tried to do it and didn't get it i mean the refs gave it to them they did it
yeah right we'll get to that um i don't think uh you know not every team can do it but can you
explain why they're able to do it like is it hurts and his like the announcer's always like
hurts can squat 650 pounds like cool but is it it – can you explain why it works just with this personnel?
Well, a couple things.
One is I think it's – a lot of it is Jason Kelsey, right?
Like, we've seen the way to stop this play is your defensive linemen
have to cut out the legs of the offensive linemen,
and then you basically jump over the top, right?
So you go low because if you cut out the legs of the offensive lineman,
they can't push forward, right?
They just fall down.
And then you jump over the top and you grab the quarterback
and you pull him back.
Boy, no one's getting lower than Jason Kelsey.
Sorry, you're not, right?
So from that basic premise is Kelsey's going to be lower than you.
So he's able to kind of root you out of there.
And then they kind of just like rugby scrub it, right?
Those guards are really big. They're really strong. They just out of there. And then they kind of just like rugby scrub it, right? Those guards are really big.
They're really strong.
They just get in there.
I think one thing that goes unnoticed at times is the patience of Jalen Hurts.
If you notice, he doesn't get the ball and go right away.
He gets the ball and he sort of waits that split second to let his offensive lineman
clear a little bit before he dives over.
And he basically rides the back of the offensive lineman clear a little bit before he dives over and he basically rides the back of
the offensive lineman right where a lot of guys at times snap it and then just try to jump over top
he just he sort of glides on top of the offensive line and so and then obviously the then because
he's on top of the offensive line he's more easily pushed forward right because if you try to dive
forward then you lose your feet and you just you can't really get pushed forward hurt is on his feet the whole time wall on top of the offensive line and he's getting pushed from
behind so to me it's not the squat thing i mean i i don't think it's the squat thing um you know i
think it's just they they have mastered this specific play and it's good for them man i mean
the chiefs don't run any quarterback.
I would love for the Chiefs to run quarterback sneak, right?
Like I, I, I think that more teams should do this,
but it's not working quite the same.
So I hope they don't ban it.
I've seen people say, well,
they should ban the ability to push your teammate.
Well, do you want that?
When your team has the ball in the three yard line and your
offensive line can't push the wide receiver into the end zone?
Like, banning it just in this instance,
you shouldn't change the play because one team is good at it, in my opinion.
Yeah.
I had a different opinion until this week,
and I thought the same thing, where it was just that drive
where the Eagles were – were they tied or up seven i don't remember but they they did
two tush pushes where aj brown got stopped it was like the dolphins d like got there yeah they made
the stop on third down that great tackle each time on aj brown was not easy to tackle and then it's
like oh wait that didn't matter like they needed to like sack the quarterback yes or get a turnover
and it's
really disheartening and i think that's it reminds me a little bit of like of of sort of when michael
vick kind of like broke defenses and no one really knew like there was this transition that he really
led in the early 2000s of like oh well he's gonna have to learn to be a pocket passer like everyone
else and it was like no no like he can just do this other thing. And the running obviously still works
for quarterbacks, but you know, defense is caught up and the other counters. And now it's like
version 10 of that. It feels like that now where it's just sort of like, you have to treat this
team a little bit differently. And you know, the Kelsey part of it like i'm curious like do you think this would work with
i don't know cory lindsley or is it kelsey specifically like is he when you say like no
one's getting lower than him is that his ability or his body like what what do you exactly mean by
that that kelsey his ability to to do that yeah to be lower you said you're like you're not getting
lower he's six two 285 he's just
like he's a low he's built low to the ground right he's not a big center like like i thought
about this before like what like why don't the chiefs just do this right well creed humphrey is
six five like he's not built like kelsey to get that low and get that push. Like, they obviously practiced it a lot.
They're big-bodied.
Not Kelsey, but the rest of, you know, the guards are.
Malata's huge.
If you notice, he goes over the left side more than the right side,
especially like Lane yesterday.
If you notice, like, he's injured right now.
He didn't really participate much in the push.
He was always like – he always – he got kind of like hit
and then sort of like stood up and cheered the photo it's a fun watch he he just his ankles messed up
like doing the tush push for him is a tough job he kind of got in the way hurts went over to the left
rode the left guard and center and got a first down and and uh lane was the one always uh always
uh you know always kind of cheering there at the end.
And they did this with a backup right guard in the game too.
They're continuing to do it with different pieces.
Yeah.
Your take on this changed my mind.
So I'm glad we talked about it. This is the right show to talk about offensive line trenches.
So we talked Eagles.
We talked Chiefs. Let's talk about sort of the next
tier uh you think the Ravens might belong in that in in that group I think we won't find out for a
while one of the reasons that uh the Ravens have gotten off to such a hot hot start is uh just a
reminder they beat the Texans they beat the Bengals before Burrow was really healthy. Lost to the Colts, spanked the Browns, lost to the Steelers, beat the Titans, and now beat the Lions. So they go Cardinals,
Seahawks, Browns, Bengals, Chargers, Rams, Jags. They don't have a tough game for a while.
So they should be able to run away with this AFC North, which I don't think any of us really
predicted. So Baltimore's in the mix.
Let's talk about this sort of second class of the Dolphins, the Lions,
the Bills, I guess of that group.
Do you feel like any of them can sort of rebound into that top sort of tier?
We still haven't watched San Francisco play yet tonight.
They play the Vikings, so let's ignore them for now.
Do you think any of these other teams that are coming off of a loss
belong in sort of this conversation?
So I just saw this tweet from our friends at the Action Network.
The Dolphins haven't been a team with a winning record since they beat the
Bills in week three of last season.
Wow.
In September of 2025, 2022.
That's a really wild stat.
I'm not sure I can trust them right now.
Right?
Like, you've played two games against really good teams
and haven't looked as competitive, right?
You lost by 28 to Buffalo and 14 last night.
It was 14 last night, right, I believe?
Yeah.
And when you play the bad teams, like this weekend,
they're favored by 10 over someone of the Patriots.
Like I'd be fine taking Dolphins minus 10 this weekend at home.
Like they have murdered bad teams.
But against the better teams, like the next step, obviously,
is being the better teams.
Like I've got to see you do that, Matt.
Like you want to be the next step? You've got to do this and and they haven't done it so for me they're
not in the discussion of like afc favorite buffalo yeah what the hell buffalo like buffalo to me
and we'll get to college football is the usc trojans because like what is their identity
right now this is is USC's problem.
If you were to say, what do they do good?
What does Buffalo do?
Now, their DVOA is great, Matt,
but they lost to the Jets with a second half and fourth quarter lead.
They lost to Patriots with a second half and fourth quarter lead.
What do they do well?
Oh, they sacked a quarterback.
Okay, but where were those sacks at the end of the game yesterday, okay but where were those sacks the end of the
game yesterday right what are those sacks against jacksonville where are those sacks in week one
against the jets like what is their identity right now and for me cross them off the list for for now
the lions i think are what i thought they would be they're going to win the north they're probably
going to win a playoff game maybe and they're going to get blown up by the niners or eagles
in the next round like that's what they are which is not it's not a bad place
to be in considering what they've had the last 20 years but that's what they that's what they are
to me the ravens feel like the next team up in the afc but i will say again the bangles get
the niners after their bye next week, they go Niners in San Francisco,
Buffalo home feisty Texans at the Ravens and the zombie Steelers who are
four and two somehow.
Like,
I don't know how they're four and two.
We're going to cash that over eight and a half wager,
Matt,
like the easiest money each season of all time.
I don't know.
I didn't want to second that game.
I don't know.
I don't even want to know how they did it.
I did. Sorry. Take it back. i did see one touchdown run by warren i did see the last part of the game um but like it's this the bangles right now by the way i i think i'm right on this
have the worst odds to win the afc north right now which well i wouldn't be mad putting money
on that quite honestly um it's not the worst wager, right?
I don't trust the Browns.
What if Lamar gets hurt?
I mean, it feels like not the worst wager in the world to put down here.
But this year, I wrote about this for Fox Sports Day,
there's a lot of middle.
There's not a lot of elite.
I don't know if there is every season by week seven.
Anyways,
there's a couple bad,
but the bad played well this week,
the bears one,
the Patriots one,
the Broncos one,
the giants one,
the giants are by the way,
one half games out of the wild card,
which is unbelievable.
It's insane.
And there's just a lot of like,
okay. A lot of like, okay.
A lot of not trustworthy.
The Bengals are the team I have my eye on because the Bengals each year
starts slow and finish fast, Matt.
And so that the team I have my eye on as a team, I think that I really do think
there's, I don't know if we're going to do this for an R and our little, you
know, our, our, our wagers, but I think myself, when I get to New York on
Wednesday, I'm going to open the apps up and put a little money on
uh on bangles to the afc north and then it's not it's not a bad wager i think i think i heard plus
600 today um it's not a bad wager tough schedule i'm gonna i'm gonna find it right now yeah look
it up um i think yeah the bangles are looming. They're always looming.
And I think,
you know,
to go back to what we were just talking about.
Plus 470.
They're behind the Steelers.
Well,
yeah,
the Steelers are four and two.
And they are pretty,
if I remember,
if I remember,
it's basically about who you play too.
Like,
I don't think,
like,
let's,
let's look at the Steelers next couple of games.
Come on, Google, let's look at the Steelers next couple games. Come on, Google.
Help me out.
Jags, Titans, Packers, Browns, Bengals, Cardinals.
By Friday, buddy, they're going to be a three-point dog at home against Jacksonville.
So mark that one down.
I hope so.
That would be nice.
Oh, yeah.
Doug Peterson with extra rest.
It's an interesting spot, actually.
That's going to be a good game.
We're going to learn something.
I actually think the Lions are –
I think the Lions' way to actually mattering in the playoffs,
they are the team that needs to be worried about seeding
because if they could somehow avoid playing both the 49ers
and the Eagles in the playoffs, like if they could somehow get them both the 49ers and the eagles in the playoffs like if they could
somehow get them on the same side like if detroit were to be the one seed or the two seed they're
next to you listen to this schedule jeff raiders at chargers bears packers at saints at bears
broncos at vikings at cowboys at lions or i'm sorry at vikings at home like they're better than every
single team they face remaining you could maybe argue dallas could should is better than them
like if they were to just finish this season with some crazy regular season record and dodged
one of those titans in the uh in the nf, they could end up making some crazy run because like golf indoors,
they wouldn't have to go to Philly or something, right?
Like they wouldn't have to even go to some dumb wild card team that,
you know, might have an outdoor game.
I just think that they,
they have a stronger path because of the weirdness of the NFC and this
very light schedule.
I also think like they're the most like the, the two awesome teams.
Like they have a good pass rush. They have good line play.
They have a lot of ways they could beat you on offense.
And I think they,
they could be a good buyer at the deadline and get something, you know,
they could find a second or third big time receiver.
They could add to their secondary. Like I have have i have some faith in them um but yeah i
agree buffalo is a team that i think we can essentially write off their stefan diggs and
and that's kind of it like i just i don't see i don't see a way that they could like vastly
improve quickly um and the dolphins i think are a fun team that you know they, they will eventually beat a winning team, but I'm not, you know,
I don't think they belong in the Super Bowl contender conversation
by any means.
Quickly, well, maybe not quickly.
Maybe I want to spend time on this.
I know we have another topic coming up, but we have college football as well,
but quickly, because this isn't broke right now.
It's fun to talk about because we've talked about NFL.
It has some NFL ties to it because it might affect coaches next year and moving forward so
did you did you hear last week about the michigan issue the michigan thing where they were allegedly
spying stealing signs did you hear that story last week well give me the long version for those who
missed that one well it's spy gate They had a staffer go to games
and they just reported that he was taping signals
of opposing teams at their games.
And he bought tickets in his own name
and they have like a paper trail of them doing this.
This is Spygate, which is what the Patriots did
all the way back in 2007-ish, right around then,
where they were recording team centers on the sidelines.
Dude, this is a huge problem, man.
This is a huge problem.
Like, this is like a big, big no-no.
It's illegal, first of all.
And it's like a breach of conduct between coaches.
Like, that's why the Patriots got in trouble.
It wasn't that they were the only ones
doing it and they probably might have only been but the fact is like they want staffer left and
said do not record my signals and they did and they got like in trouble like it's it's a breach
of like it's a breach of coaching contract and so like harbaugh will not survive this and he will be in the nfl next season
so i don't know what that means for i don't know what that means for um
nfl teams but he'll be in the nfl next year so that's uh that's just breaking right now we'll
get back to college football in a little bit let's uh let's hit topic three here very quickly yeah let's do that uh
there's yeah so this is sort of a little bit of a grab bag and i have a few extras i wanted to
show you so okay uh we talked about justin herbert and empty calories so justin herbert
lost another game everyone you watch him play and you think to yourself like man this guy's
unbelievable nothing seems to work around him the defense is bad the coaching is bad
you know he's got receivers but it just never feels like it works i'm just i think it's time
to stop making excuses for this guy like i just i feel like he's in sort of the range that the
bills are where it's like how many times do we have to see with our own eyes that this guy is just not
what everyone thinks he can be.
And I think it's just time to have a little bit of a reckoning.
And one of the things about him that I've seen a lot this season that I
couldn't really understand until now is when you look at his second half
splits, he sucks at covering second half bets.
He's great at covering first half bets.
You saw in the Chiefs game yesterday.
There is something to be said for being the guy
who can make those big throws in the fourth quarter.
Jalen Hurts, that huge play to A.J. Brown,
that last drive, those last couple drives
where they can ice the game,
where you feel the difference between Jalen Hurts and Tua. It's small, and over a full season, they might
have the same exact stats, but you can tell the difference. And I just don't think Herbert is that
dude. And I think everybody's made excuses for him, but at the end of the day, it's Eckler,
it's Keenan Allen, a good offensive line, a defense with a lot of good players, a bad coach.
But, like, look what some of these guys can overcome.
Look what we expect Joe Burrow to be able to overcome.
I just don't think that Herbert belongs in that conversation anymore,
and I think we can officially call him empty calories.
What do you think?
Okay.
So the thing about Herbert is, like,
I don't know what he's doing wrong per se,
right?
Like that's why it's,
it's so odd because when you watch him play,
there's not noticeable misses.
You're not like,
I missed that guy.
That's not,
that's not,
that's not your takeaway very often.
Right.
It's not ever like,
oh man,
he didn't read the defense correctly.
There's a guy free runner that's hitting him.
It just doesn't happen the second half of games.
I don't know.
I don't have a reason for it.
I do not know why.
But I think it is time to have the conversation of like supremely talented
but hasn't got over the hurdle yet.
I will reserve judgment until they fire Brandon Staley though.
The team is never going to reach its potential
with the guy as their head coach.
It's very simple.
If you are a defensive coach or an offensive coach
and your team is not good,
but you're at least good at the thing that you do well,
I can live with that.
His team is not good, and his defense sucks, right?
You can't have that.
He's not a good football coach.
At least not a head coach.
And so I'm with you on the empty calories part of it, sucks right you can't have that he's not a good football coach at least not a head coach and so
i will i'm with you on the empty calories part of it but let me see him with just a better coach
next season um better head coach it might be kellen moore i don't know it might be someone else
but here's the thing about this on that is that we say empty calories if that job opens up
every coach wants that job right
like they're going to want to work with just oh yeah oh dude if sean payne could yeah
if sean payden could trade himself to the the chargers he would
yeah so but they'll never have that. But I certainly think it's fair.
No, you're fine.
This is basically a radio.
You interrupt me all you want.
We're basically at the point now where, you know, like, sorry,
the Eagles, by the way, just traded Terrell Edmonds,
who got burned last night by a three-kill for Kevin Byer.
Wow. Man, Harry Roseman is just traded Terrell Edmonds, who got burned last night by a three-kill for Kevin Byer. Wow.
Man, Howie Roseman is just like, he is be dealing.
But I think it's fair to certainly question Herbert
because you should see some of those special wins.
You should see a playoff win.
We don't see that yet.
And we're just as critical on Kirk Cousins for the same things.
And we're not that way with Justin Herbert yet.
I love Herbert. He's my guy. Of course. And we're not that way with Justin Herbert yet. I love Herbert.
He's my guy.
Of course.
And you were right about him coming out.
Like, he's already exceeded every expectation.
Like, let's get that out of the way.
His career record through 55 games, 27 and 28.
That's pretty crazy.
Like, for a guy that good.
He's, honestly, the quarterback who he reminds me of
is another charger.
It's Philip Rivers.
It's like every year all the dorks are like, Philip Rivers, man, you don't get it.
Like this guy, he's got it.
And then it's like, cool.
So it's fourth and three in December.
Where is he?
And he wasn't there.
And it's the same exact thing.
And the thing about, oh, they could get any coach, like any coach would want that.
It's still the Chargers.
Like the Chargers haven't fired Brandon Staley
because they're too cheap,
because they don't have fans.
And it's a huge problem.
And that's another thing that Herbert,
if you look at some of these quarterbacks,
like Joe Burrow,
look what he was able to do with an organization
that never paid anyone.
It's like, there is a difference between, and it's splitting hairs. I'm asking him to be a top five
player, but that's what everyone says he is. He isn't. He just is not a top five quarterback yet.
And if he was, all these other problems would go away. Like they would be in the Jim Harbaugh
conversation, a hundred percent, but they're not because he's not good enough to attract the top,
you know, to transcend all the limitations their organization has.
You know, Patrick Mahomes,
was Kansas City a top tier organization until he got there?
Like they were pretty good.
And you read it was the one who kind of got it there.
Yeah.
And he was the one who got it there.
Yeah.
But maybe Burrow's a better example,
but I just think that it's time to have a more realistic conversation about him.
And I wanted to run that one by you.
Oh, I think that's totally fair.
I have a few other quick ones.
These are just like mini takes.
Let's first talk about the Patriots.
So there was this new story that came out yesterday that Bill Belichick had secretly signed this extension that made everyone just go like, huh?
Like, what's going on here?
And then they end up beating the Bills as massive underdogs and knocking everyone out of their survivor pools.
Not us, though.
What do you think?
I had Seattle.
I had Seattle survivor.
Me too.
I did because I did also.
Do you think that that was a real like, hey, Belichick's back.
Like maybe we should have seen this one coming.
No?
No.
Just the Bills suck?
The Bills just shit the bed at the end, like usual.
Excuse my language to our kids that are listening.
My son asked me, by the way, the other day, like, why do you not cuss when you do radio and stuff?
I'm like, well, kids are listening.
Like, you know,
it's not the most professional sounding thing to do.
And you want to,
don't want to,
and I just cuss my own podcast.
So sorry,
Alex,
if you're listening,
he's not.
Cause my wife,
my wife doesn't even know what I'm doing right now.
I don't think she has no idea.
I'm just up in my office screaming,
screaming into my computer,
but she knows who you are and your wife and she likes you guys.
So I get it.
I get away with it.
She's the best
yeah uh so um yeah i i uh i i don't i don't have any faith in the patriots they they're who they
have this weekend are they they're uh miami oh yeah we're betting right now yeah we're gonna
bet the dolphins minus 10 i don't care. Yeah. I actually love that.
I love it too.
Okay.
Lots of talks about the refs this week.
We alluded to it with the craziness in the Ram Steelers game
where it was a bad spot.
They were out of challenges.
I think speaking of Alex, he's on the podcast right now.
My daughter just came in my office and said,
can we go to Sephora tonight?
You have gymnastics in 30 minutes.
All right.
I'm actually doing a podcast, love.
Okay, sorry.
I'm going to keep going on the refs.
The Rams-Steelers game had some controversy.
The Eagles-Dolphins game, the Dolphins were called for like 12 penalties.
The Eagles were called for zero.
They may have gotten one at the end.
I don't think so.
And then in the Browns game,
there was like a sack
on the third and long
that was a questionable
illegal contact.
There was a pass interference
with a ball thrown in the stands.
Does it feel like something's
going on with the refs right now
or do we do this every year?
We do this every year.
We do this every year.
Here's my referee.
This is what I say about the officials.
I saw Nate Tice put out a tweet with a procedural error they made in the Falcons game
where they basically didn't – they started the clock too soon,
and the Falcons had to call a timeout.
To me – and I've dealt with this.
I'm a Pac-12 guy.
I've seen the Pac-12 refs.
This is my response all the time, is that judgment calls get missed.
It's part of the job.
Procedural calls can't have errors.
You can't spot Kenny Pickett incorrectly when you have a sky judge
and you have cameras on the field.
You can't host a foul without 15 seconds on the play clock
because you had a bad procedure with spawn the ball and giving them a first down.
Can't have those errors.
Can't enforce penalties incorrectly, which NFL doesn't have a problem doing.
That's a cultural ball thing mostly.
But look, if you miss a pass interference, you miss a pass interference.
If you miss a hold in, you miss a holding.
But the procedural errors, in my opinion, cannot happen, especially when we know there's
someone, there's a sky judge, right?
Like they're watching the games and so you can't you cannot
spot can he pick it incorrectly now again if there's no view to change your opinion on on that
that i get it everyone says well well there's a chip in the ball we've had this discussion before
with with sam schwartz team before okay the chip by the way is in the middle of the ball so you
have to calculate the distance from the chip to the middle of the ball so you have to calculate the distance from
the chip to the front of the ball but you also have to have a board that runs on one side of
the field to basically bounce data onto to see where the ball's at like and you can't do that
with with people lining the sidelines so like it doesn't work it's not going to work people keep
saying that matt that we don't have the technology for that yet. Maybe one day we do, but not right now.
But again, that doesn't happen actually very often.
The officials get it right more.
I was talking to a reporter this morning who was asking me about a legal man downfield.
And we were talking about it.
And then like after a couple minutes, he realized, oh, yeah, the refs are right.
That's a tough call they made.
But they were correct.
I'm like, yeah, they're correct more often than we think.
We just noticed the bad ones, right? And so it's a tough call they made, but they were correct. I'm like, yeah, they're correct more often than we think. We just noticed the bad ones, right?
And so it's a tough job.
The Dolphins last night just got – they had no breaks in that manner.
But we say this every year.
It's, you know, it's – you know.
It's tough.
And your team, you end up on the wrong side of half of them
and on the right side of half of them and on the right side of half of them. But I will say it does feel like it,
it does feel like there's the refs have taken some big moments and I,
I I'm not, I'm not accusing anyone of anything.
I don't want to open this can of worms, but someone's going to.
So at minute 45 of our podcast, I'll say it to us.
There's going to be some questions, right?
Every time you watch a game now, there's DraftKings ads.
There's all these ads.
There's so much stuff out there that could be happening that now the conspiracy theories are starting to sort of spin.
And I saw a tweet this morning.
And I'm not saying it's the right, but I saw a tweet this morning that the,
one of the refs last night from the dolphins game,
like lives in Pennsylvania.
And everyone was like,
see,
it's a,
it's a,
this guy is like an Eagles fan.
He's been on the,
it's like,
that's coming.
And I hope that the NFL has a plan for it.
I don't personally think that that's happening,
but when you see the players are betting on games,
you know, that there's going to be you see the players are betting on games you know
that there's going to be a question it's a massive catastrophe if this is even talked about so i'm
not rooting for it but i did want to throw that out there and see how you reacted well we know
that the nfl loves their midwestern kansas city and that's definitely the team that they're going
to have you know they're going to fix everything for us the the the missouri kansas chiefs yeah um well everyone's saying oh they're
fixing games for the browns like they want the browns to win games like now and then ron rivera
yesterday was yelling at the refs because they're the same crew that hosed washington last year at
the giants and it's just like guys like they don't care they know like your your team is not the center of the NFL universe to anyone but you.
So let's put a pin in that.
I have three other quick ones.
One sentence, yes or no.
Deshaun Watson is the biggest trade disaster of all time.
Yes.
I think so, right?
I think that when he got benched yesterday, it became obvious.
It's the guaranteed money part of it.
Yeah. More than Russell Wilson part of it. Yeah.
More than Russell Wilson, I think.
Yeah.
Yes.
Russell Wilson, can he get out of the trade?
I think so.
After this year.
They can move on.
I think another two years.
Okay, next one.
After Patrick Mahomes, Miles Garrett is the best player in the NFL.
Oh, man. I think right now you have to say yes.
I mean, the game yesterday he had, buddy, where he blocked a field goal,
had a strip sack for a touchdown, had another strip sack for a fumble.
He's the most impactful right now.
We did not put money in him for defensive player of the year.
We probably made a mistake on that.
He's been incredible.
Yes, right now I'd say yes.
I think he's having a genuine Hall of Fame career that is unbelievable to watch. He's on the path to be one of
the great defensive players of our lifetime. I would agree with that one.
Here's the last one. Eric Biennemi
will not be a head coach next year
or let's say he will be a head coach
next year so you don't have to answer in a negative
I don't think so no
yeah I don't think so either
you want to do more
on that
no I just think that
we've talked about EB for four years now
he should have been a head coach before this.
We know that.
But Washington being terrible is not going to help him be a head coach.
Like, it just not.
So they leave the league and Saks giving up too.
Sam Howell's getting murdered back there.
It's not going to happen.
And it's unfair.
Something, I've mentioned this before, something behind the scenes had to happen. It's unfair. Something I've mentioned this before,
something behind the scenes had to happen, right?
Because there's just no way that he had this many interviews
and not get a job.
There's something else happening there.
I don't know what it is.
Maybe we'll find out one day.
But something else is behind the scenes
why he doesn't have a job yet.
Or it's a head coach, I should say.
I love to see Magic Johnson subtweeting Ron Rivera.
Oh, my God.
Seven weeks into the season.
I'm so excited.
Magic Johnson was like the most Magic Johnson tweet of all time.
It was so funny.
Holy shit.
Dude, having Magic Johnson tweet about my team is my favorite thing
I've ever had happen to me as a sports fan.
All right, enough.
Nick, we're not talking about Tyson Badgett in the Pro Bowl.
Congrats, Tyson Badgett, on beating the Raiders.
The Raiders are worse than the Colorado School of Mines.
There, we can say it.
All right, should we move on to college football, or do you want to hit Tyson Badgett?
Well, I'll just say this about college football very quickly.
Well, I'll just say this about college football very quickly.
You know, I watch USC today on film.
I watch Utah's offensive line.
Oregon plays Utah this week.
And, like, dude, it's embarrassing.
USC's defense is embarrassing.
They're small.
They're not physical. It's just a soft a soft program man i tweeted about this earlier it's just it's just soft right now and i i'm shocked that usc has gotten this but i mean
they feel like one of the bigger stories right now because we know george is good and the michigan
thing as i mentioned i mean it's not gonna be good i don't i don't look at me on forfeit games
but it's i think it's quite likely that they have information that they were doing this they're
gonna forfeit the rest of their game.
Not the rest of their games, but the previous games
and not be a playoff team.
Wow.
Could be.
I think that's what's going to happen.
I don't know.
And I don't know if it will be wrapped up before the end of the season
to even do this.
Florida State's good, but I think there's some warts there.
Oregon-Was washing are good
i mean yeah but the story to me is like usc is going backwards and they're going backwards
because they're soft they're soft it's that simple they're soft can't hit anyone can't punch
you in the mouth um small in defense the scheme is terrible um you know they they they they slant
out of gaps too much it's just bad it was embarrassing
it's usc man i played those pete carroll teams i played those teams with 11 guys on that defense
and went to the nfl it was more actually more than that in 2007 it was like 14 15 guys went
to the nfl off that defense it's just soft man it really bothered me and i and i dude i despise usc
i don't want them to be good and i looked looked at that film and was like, this is unacceptable.
Like, I just can't put my film hat on there.
So, all right.
We're going long.
We're going to take a break.
We'll come back.
We'll do my PrizePix projection for tonight.
It'll cover kind of what I think about the game.
We'll do that next.
I'll be right back.

Go download Vaulted, spelled V-L-T-E-D,
and remember to use the code Jeff.
That's G-E-O-F-F, so you can see my predictions and play along.
All right, Matt.
It's time for Prize Picks.
I did not hit last week.
I've hit plenty of other weeks, so I'll take the good and the bad, right?
It happens.
But here's what we're doing for tonight, okay?
That's right.
I'm doing a three-score entry tonight on PrizePix.
Use the promo code GSSY to get $100 match deposit.
It's a lot of fun to do.
You take a player more or less than their projection.
You could do it for fantasy points.
You could do it for receiving yards, sacks, kicks, punts,
whatever you want to do.
Here's my three.
Ready?
It's Niners and Vikings tonight I have TJ Hawkinson under Jimmy TJ Hawkinson less than 51 and a half receiving yards the reason I have him less is because they are
targeting him a lot because Jefferson is out guess what the Niners are going to do Matt they're
going to say no no we're not letting you do that we have fast linebackers you're not going to do, Matt? They're going to say, no, no. We're not letting you do that. We have fast linebackers. You're not going to make your offense
about throwing the ball to the tight end.
Christian McCaffrey,
less than 65 and a half
rushing yards. Dude's playing with
an injury, buddy. I couldn't find
Elijah Mitchell. He wasn't on the PrizePix app.
Otherwise, I would have taken him over. But to me, this is a
play on the injury, right? Like, he's injured.
He's beat up. He takes one shot to the oblique man.
He might be out the rest of the game.
So under there, they're going to have Cousins
more than 36.5 pass attempts because they're
going to be behind, and he's going to have to be throwing the
ball, Matt. And I think
I'm just kind of betting
on there being
a lot of pass attempts for him because
of
them not playing good football tonight. So that's what I
have. I have TJ Hawkinson less than 51.5 receiving yards,
McCaffrey less than 65.5 rushing yards,
and Cousins more than 36.5 pass attempts.
You win up to 25 times your money.
It's a lot of fun to do.
It's a lot of fun to follow along.
Matthew, any final words?
I mean, I was three and a half yards away
from a four-squ square flex play hitting.
Raheem Mostert went under.
Sam Howell went over.
Derek Carr went over his rushing total.
But I was three yards short on Sam Howell.
So I'm bummed about Raheem Mostert.
I'm bummed about that.
But maybe I'll trail you tonight and try to even it up here.
I did use the – I'm usually on the Friday show,
so I haven't played around as much. But I did use the, I'm usually on the Friday show, so I haven't played around as much,
but I did use the deposit.
It works.
I've got my nice sort of nice little balance and I'm ready.
I'm ready to play this game tonight.
It should be fun.
I think I signed up.
I think I already had an account.
I didn't even get my own deposit.
I don't think I did.
Should hit our friend Jordan and ask him about that.
She could actually get another deposit.
It's okay, though.
All right, guys.
We'll talk to you guys on Friday.
Enjoy the games tonight.
This Michigan story is going to be fun to watch.
I don't know how many of you guys are college football people,
but fun to watch this one.
Just keep refreshing tweets and see what we have.
It's a lot of fun to follow along here.
All right, everyone.
Have a great couple of days.
Talk to you guys Friday.
Bye-bye.
Bye-bye.
