Yeah, we're talking 300 different games for our 300th episode. I think we may want to just like suss out how long this is gonna take us

by just simply without any content, counting from one to 300 as fast as possible so that we can get like just like even like a frame of reference of the fastest possible version of this show that we could do. Yes. Okay, so are we collectively doing it? Are we doing it one at a time, like alternating or all doing it together?

I'll sit on the side, you guys can do the rambling I'll explain for me, I had some of these little snacks here that are a courtesy of head gum. These are Drizzlicious Rice Cakes. God damn it. Many rice cakes reimagined. So the concept of the rice cake before was impossible to comprehend.

This is a reimagining of the rice cake. These are small rice cake bites. And these are covered in sort of a s'more drizzle. Yeah. Only 90 calories and there's 21, only 90 calories per 21 pieces. And I had to say these were fine. How many pieces we got in there?

You know, I ate the whole bag. I can't speak to how many there were. Is it 90, is it per package or is it per serving? It says per serving. Okay. So hopefully it's the- How many servings per package? Cause that's where they get you. One serving per container.

Oh, okay, okay. So that is a holistic 90 calorie indulgence. That's one of those ones where I'll have a thing like a Drizzle-ish, I've never had the actual Drizzle-ish, but I have those sorts of things before and I'm like, this is the snack I have when I'm not having the snack I really want. Yeah, I wanted something good.

You want like cookies or something. I was thinking of banana. Yeah, and you're having rice cakes with some fucking cacao drizzled all over the top. I understand the complications with having bananas sort of in an office setting. Everybody's here all the time, and God knows. Right.

Basically, it goes down any anytime we're around here. And let alone what if an ape gets on the loose? Well, if an ape gets on the loose, you might be able to placate this angry ape with a nanner. That's true, actually might be helpful for subduing them. Yeah, sort of like Chris Pratt, blue style in the Jurassic World movies. We'll talk to Anya,

cause we should have some bananas just for that contingency. Yeah. We don't know, we never know what an ape might attack. I can't believe that snack is legal. It kind of, you know what, it's made with, they're made with chia, quinoa, and flax. And jizz apparently. Yeah, well yeah, that's the thing that they really got. Yeah, it looks like that the s'more stuff was sort of cummed on it. Yeah Yes, yeah, and that's almost what the word is actually yeah, just a licious is real I mean, it's just a couple of that's like right on the line. A little punchy. Well, I'm feeling a little punchy. But that's good energy that we could, I think we're gonna, we have a fun topic today that we are going to get into, we're gonna spend some time on, and hopefully it won't create this unwieldy, over-long episode.

We're just gonna have to kind of, we'll get to it right now. Let's start with what we always begin with, which is what the Resident Evil Merchant was about to queue up a little bit earlier. Let's talk about some video games we're playing now. It's What Are You Playing? One, two, three. What are you playing?

It's me, the Resident Evil Merchant. I'm here to answer the question I always ask. I used to ask, what are you buying? And now I ask, what are you playing? Mad Abadaka, what are you playing? Thank you, Resident Evil Merchant. It's nothing. Thank you. I fell off of a vowed not for any particular reason. I am planning to get back to it.

It's just been a little busy, Okay. I am still trucking along in Pokemon Unbound and really enjoying that. And just sort of like, it's just so interesting. I've talked about how nice it is that some developers got together, you know, some hobbyist developers got together and made this. And so it's just so even more visually engaging than

some of the other games I've played in the Pokemon series as of late like They could I almost like wish that they would just like go back to this aesthetic instead the 2d sprites right sure Cuz it is like the 3d stuff is just not it doesn't look as good. It just doesn't look good. It's a real shame. And also it seems like they don't give a shit about it. They true, yeah, that's the issue. It's a real issue. They don't care to make it look good

because it could look great, but it's just a real shame. I gosh, I think maybe the best looking 3D Pokemon game in the last five years was that that new Pokemon snap and that game Doesn't even look good It is crazy in a company known for such tight Control over its major IP. Yeah, like when they were like frame fucking the Super Mario Brothers movie that

Illumination made yeah Like the Pokemon franchise doesn't look like the most expensive game on Earth. That it isn't flawless and lush. That it doesn't even have the sort of consistent design, like intensity of like Wind Waker. Yeah, it's also because Nintendo, and obviously they don't have full control over it, like the Pokemon IP is not a thing

that they oversee internally, or that they develop internally rather, they obviously are overseeing it. But you know, the Pokemon company, Game Freak, is developing it. They are usually so protective of their own IP. Like even Donkey Kong, they're like, they keep, you know, really under a

pretty tight control. And it's, you know, even something they outsource like Metroid, again, they're like, I feel like they're really, there was like, Other M was like a one kind of huge misfire. But other than that, I feel like they're pretty dialed in in terms of like we wanna make sure that these franchises are well represented, let alone of course your Mario's and Zelda's. Yeah.

So, they don't have to try with any of these, but they choose not to try with Pokemon. It's just disappointing because the thing, I mean I'm a sucker. I'm gonna buy every single one that comes out until you're fucking dead Well, yeah, that's that's you're also part of the problem. Just the whole thing It's also crazy that they wouldn't make a regular Pokemon movie because they were so protective of the IP that it could only be a Detective Pikachu movie yeah, but then simultaneously the actual games look like dog shit. Yeah, it's really, really crazy.

And I understand that, yeah, I'm part of it, but I'm just one man. What are you supposed to do? What am I supposed to do? It's a thing you want, it's a franchise you've loved since you were a kid. Of course you have some allegiance to it. You're gonna try it every, it's like,

it's like rooting for a sports team, which is a thing I can, you know, I certainly have plenty of friends who rooting for a sports team which is a thing I can you know I certainly have a Plenty of friends who root for a sports team and then every year like the fucking New York Jets are disappointing them They're so pissed off, but it's just like they've been rooting for them forever, so what are they gonna? Do so I I'm gonna keep trucking along with this it I like that it there's just like plenty of things to do in it Yeah

Like you go to a new town and there's just like plenty of things to do in it Yeah, like you go to a new town and there's just like new NPCs that have like little side quests for you But the thing that I do want to highlight is this other game that I'm playing First time ever playing a game like that a game like this, but I'm first time playing this game, okay? I'm playing the first sweet good in Wow Wow on the Remaster I can't remember the full title of the remaster package is too long. Yeah, very too long sweet code in one and two It's like the golden rune or something. Yeah something like uh But I gotta tell you something about this. Yeah, good in

Extremely my shit. Yeah, very good. Very pleasant. very pleasant so far. Not very far into it. I'm truly in the first town you go to outside of the town you starred in. And I love it. Also you have a party of five? That's a big party. I thought that standard was four. The standard max was four. I'm rocking around five dudes.

How many of you five? Is Scott Wolf going gonna show up? Matthew Fox is just right out of the corner. Don't get me started on the rest. You know what I'm talking about. Were Scott Wolf and Matthew Fox actually in the same show? Yeah, and- What's next, Greg Dog?

Henceforth I'd like to Get into it a little more. I didn't spend that much time with it Let me tell you something how it looks on that switch OLED the Italians might say molto bene They might say it Wow, yeah, it's gorgeous it is I'm also playing it Matt Yeah, it's really really great and you experienced it before yeah, and so as a fan of The original yeah, would you say that the remake is a loving tribute because I know that there are some differences I don't they like sort of rewrote the script. Well, it's been I haven't played it Yeah, I mean like anytime I get an emulator

It's one of the games that I'll throw on my my PlayStation 1 emulator, but I don't Um I haven't played played it enough to be like oh wow this script is so much better that being said It's a good script. It feels like it's it's like old medieval Language you know like fantasy novel stuff, and I'm pretty sure the original was just like go to that town And now it's like it's like, oh, forsooth. We must journey forth to the nearest village, lest the dragons kill us. I named my character Matt, and then I got called Handsome,

and I loved it. I was gonna talk, I'll say my piece when you're done, so why don't you keep want you to keep jet uh? It's really good. Yeah But I would like to get more into it because I I find it to be very relaxing though to very very Just that that aesthetic is very soothing to me now that I have such fondness a fondness for it with like the early Final Fantasy games and more in particular Chrono Trigger is sort of a more visual comp for it. It's probably it's similar era of course which then just makes me think why aren't

they doing this with Chrono Trigger? They should just do it. Yeah they're you know just celebrated 30 years recently. We should do a Suikoden episode at some point. Yeah. figure out exactly how to cover. But I know that it is a series that's very important to Heather and that this new remaster has been pretty well received, at least from a standpoint of its new localization. Which also is funny because when Suikoden came out

the first time, people just dunked on it because they were like, but it looks like sprites still. Like I think it was like concurrent with the release information for Final Fantasy VII. In fact, it came out I think after Final Fantasy VII. It did, Suikoden 1 came out in 1995 and Suikoden 2 was 1998. So yeah, it was the sort of thing

where it did feel a little dated and people would even say at the time kitty That a game was still sprite based but it also was Doing shit that Final Fantasy 7 wasn't doing the the remaster Look I Don't like the look of the backgrounds in the remaster because they feel a little phone game-y to me. They feel like mobile game. They're a little too slick and a little too,

like it's weird when the water, when your main character has not been redesigned. He is still just like the ugly 32-bit sprite, but then the water is- By ugly, you know, we know what you mean by ugly. Yeah, yeah, yeah, like I mean gorgeous, but ugly, like, rudimentary. Grotesque, sickening.

But the water is like a totally different fidelity and also has like real-time reflections, and it's kind of weird. It's not the same aesthetic as, what was that, Octopath Traveler, where it's like, it has shine, but still all feels cohesive. Like these feel like two totally different worlds

that have been married together. But, boy, does this game sledgehammer me with nostalgia. The first time I played this game and beat the game, my television was on an egg crate. Like I was, I had a, my PlayStation was on the floor and I couldn't believe how good the music was. Because also the music in Final Fantasy VII felt like MIDI sounds, whereas the music in Final Fantasy VII felt like midi sounds,

whereas the music in Suikoden had like the squeak of guitar frets when they're playing that main guitar theme in your first village. And I was like, holy shit, this is incredible. And that song from that first town is still on my like relaxing mix of video game music, because it became so, it was so woven into my experience of early gaming.

So I fucking love it, I love Suikoden. It's really, really, I'm really digging it. Yeah, I really dig it too. As a side note, I am still playing Kingdom Come 2. I did beat a few missions. I think I wrote you guys about it. I had a choice where a woman had been cast out as a witch and she was like, her daughter had been kidnapped

and it turned out that it was these farmhand sons who had kidnapped the daughter and I found one, confronted him, got him arrested, but the other one was holding her hostage. I finally talked him down, which was terrifying for me because I failed every check except one. Because my guy is still so stupid. And then he's like, okay, okay, maybe I'll go to to town he walks away from the girl and as soon as he does she fucking backstabs him and kills him

And I was like oh no So then I bring her back to her mom and her mom's like ha fuck They're gonna come for us because she killed and she's like how could I not they they kidnapped me they killed me my boyfriend And so the old woman is like well well, it's up to you. You can either let me stay out here and know that they are going to come and hunt me down because of what my daughter has done, or you can choose to go to the town

and you can kill the farmhand for what he's done to our family, or the farmer. And that's your choice. He's mad at her because she was a midwife and you can kill the farmhand for what he's done to our family, or the farmer. And that's your choice. He's mad at her because she was a midwife and his wife died during childbirth, so he blames her. She's mad at him for being ostracized. I go to the town, he's kneeling in front of his baby's grave

who wasn't baptized, who couldn't go to heaven because he wasn't baptized babies in hell And I was like right up a storm Jesus. I could help you the ice I I'm two missions into this game And I had promised myself I was gonna play a noble person and my first choice is between two ignoble choices So I murdered the man on his His son's grave. Forgive me Lord, it's time to go back to the old me.

And then carried his body out of town, threw it in a river, and took all the shit off of his body. I went to the old lady and I'm like, it's done. And she's like, oh thank you, thank you so much. She's so emotional. And I'm like, this sucks. Like I've murdered somebody now and all I was trying to do was play like clean. But that's Kingdom Come for you, I love it. Yeah, that sounds like awesome narrative design. I really, that makes me wanna play. Every other thing you say about it

either makes me never wanna like experience it or like give it a shot And it's like it's a very it sounds like a very compelling. I love it Do you how does the like is there is there a character creation process where you allocate? Stats or anything or is that do you just develop because you're talking about your character being so stupid like do develop just develop these skill Like charisma through interacting or something. I think your initial conversations with people are secretly designing your character. Oh, got it, yeah, right. And then it's also, there's a lot of passive stat building.

So if you just carry too much bullshit, like I did because I was like, I have to make money somehow, so I'm gonna carry everything from these bandits to town. But apparently, if you're over encumbered, encumbered, you, and you're walking with all that shit, you're building up your muscles, so you build up strength.

Oh, interesting, okay, so. It's not, there's tons and tons of passive, I love taking shortcuts, like I don't like walking on the roads, so I'm also getting like passive survival boosts and perks that are like you're starting to learn what certain Shrubs look like right and I'm like, that's fucking awesome design. I will have updates on that in future weeks, but I wanna discuss a new release, which I was really excited about, and I got to spend some time with Wanderstop. Oh. Wanderstop came out March 11th. It is developed by Ivy Road, which is a development team, chiefly the director, Davey Reedon, or Redden,

who did the Stanley Parable, which we've- Hey! I think we talked about it on the podcast. Yeah. And then also, it was co-written with Carla Zimonga, who did, worked on Gone Home, and Music by C418, who I'll come back to. I've been playing on PC.

I put a few hours in, and it's definitely got its hooks in me. So this is a cozy game that is a pretty clear, clean-cut allegory for dealing with professional burnout The play and a lot of these games are that I mean Stardew Valley is like hey this sort of Escape to this you know to the country escape to this rural landscape You know, but but this one is like Liz like pretty explicitly through the beats of the story talking about that Uh, you know that phenomenon the player character is alta who is a fighter in the fantasy role-playing sense

brew tea, maintain the shop, and more importantly, learning work-life balance. In short, it's one of those games that I love and Heather would hate. It is a delight. The writing is really, really charming. Boro, who is this big gregarious dude, he's got this super easygoing, unflappable attitude.

He's a stoic with a smile on his face, very zen. He basically, anything that happens or that your character chooses to do, he's just kind of like, oh, that's okay, because that's kind of what should happen. It's just like a very tranquil sort of approach to life. Here's Redden, the director on Boro, talking about this character in a polygon piece

through direct knowledge. He's just sort of like leading by example and just sort of like letting you be you, which is great. You can really just kind of play it at your own pace. It's trying to encourage you to slow down, enjoy the moment and also just about living for now, not for some future goal, even if that's a concrete goal,

like being the best fighter. I will say, I did read some Steam reviews of people with anxiety, and some people are like, oh, I found this game helpful, it gives me a nice perspective, and other people are just like, this game is giving me a panic attack. Oh my God, wow. Because there's still constant tasks

like any of these sorts of games that are, you know, analogous to farming Sims or survival games. You still have to like sweep up leaf piles or whatever the fuck. So they're the wash dishes. So there's still that stuff is constantly happening. You've still got to manage those spinning plates. So, you know, your mileage may vary. But part of what makes this game so cozy in this moment of cozy games is the aesthetics. And it is an Unreal Engine game. It's kind of awesome now, I will say,

that tools have reached the point where an indie team, small indie team can make a 3D game like this that almost looks like a Sony first party PS4 platformer. It's got really nice art direction, vivid palette, the sort of general softness, this pastoral feel. It's kind of like a very Disney dream light valley if anyone listening has messed around with that. And the music by C418 is great. C418, most known for composing the Minecraft soundtrack when he was like 20, which is great. But yeah, I think is pretty

intricately involved in this or intimately involved in this studio and the creation of this studio beyond just composing the music. This is a track called Reinvigorating that I think just kind of gives a taste of the feel of the soundtrack. So, I mean, it is very Minecraft, but it also kind of got some, you know, Joe Izaishi Studio Ghibli sort of feel to it, you know, it also kind of reminds me of the Fed score by disaster piece. But it's a really great accompaniment to the visuals and just the overall character really good to the of the game. So yeah, I really like it. I feel like there's been maybe some I feel like there's there's been some sort of mixed reactions to this game but it's it's for sure working for me

Thank you. Thank you, Resident Evil. I would say if anyone out there has never experienced Resident Evil 4, there's a remaster now which you can play. No! It's probably the easiest way to get into it is by playing the remaster on Modern Art War.

I will say the original version is on Switch, and I think it might still be listed on other Online stores, yeah, yeah, and it's like it's still very playable. Yeah, it's a great game It's a great game, but the the remake is really really good. No, no, I Finished that game here. We fucking go. But also though, I will say that those two games spoke to such intense technological leaps at the time that they were tens compared to everything else that had come out at that point. You can't really finish as more of an online experience I think one of the most amazing value probably that's ever been released like made like four full games. Yeah one box I've not played this I've played portal but not the orange box as it were I I have not played it on the 360 does that is that a problem? Oh I have not played it on the 360. Is that a problem? Oh, because it's an Xbox 360 version. Yeah, like I've played this game on PS3, I think. I think, or maybe not. You know what? I have played Portal. I have played it on the 360, so I probably played Orange Box.

Yeah, I finished Tekken 3 on the PlayStation 1 I've been I finished a single player campaign with my have to say that I've played it I don't know that I have but I think I must have at some point. Mass Effect 2, I finished. And again, again, the game I finished pretty recently. I've played Mass Effect 2. I don't think I've played Mass Effect 2. I played it on PlayStation 3, and I did the thing that you can skip the part of Mass Effect 1, because that one wasn't ported to PlayStation 3.

The Mass Effect's rip. I finally got into them with the legendary edition, the collection that came out and they're there. I certainly bought that a couple of times Okay, here's one where I'm like, I think this might be a We might all have errors on this one or we might get an air because I don't know if any of us have played This is the visual novel the house in Fataata Morgana, Dreams of the Revenants, for Nintendo Switch. That's the edition listed at number 25 overall. Incredible critical score here.

Although based on only 10 critic reviews. I've never, this is my first time hearing these words in this order. I think I mentioned this on the show before, because I looked at like the top 25 games ever rated, and I was like, what the fuck is the house in Fata Morgana? I have not played this. I do think I did buy it from my Switch

while we were podcasting. Oh, wow. But I have not played it. I think I would love it. I'm sure you would. Ranch finished this one. It has a lady on the front who's lying in roses but also looks sexy.

I think I've started Skyrim like five times and I but that's about it. I have finished Skyrim and I did so under in the middle of the night when I was trying to change my internal clock to Japan,

so I had work lights beaming at me. So people outside of my apartment heard the sounds of Skyrim and absolute daylight was blasting out of the windows. I've had, I've certainly had moments where, in the past, where I've, where I've reinstalled Skyrim and Steam and been like, I'm gonna finally finish this thing and then I just like bounce off of it again.

But all right, let's move on. Half-Life, yes, I finished the original Half-Life for PC. Wow, it came way back in 1998. A fantastic game. I've played like 20 minutes of it, so I'll say I played it. I have never played the original Half-Life. What a disaster.

I met a longtime friend because I was playing Half-Life 1 in my dorm room and he just heard the sound of the machine gun and said, hey, what's that game you're playing? Well, we were like friends all through college and afterward. Isn't that crazy? That is crazy. Those are me cute. All right, next up, Legend of Zelda, Tears of the Kingdom. I played this game, I did not feel enough momentum to finish this, to see this through the end. I finished this game, and I like it more than Breath of the Wild. This is what I've heard from people, from Zelda fans.

They like it more than Breath of the Wild. For me, I just got kind of exhausted by it. Same, I played it, I did not finish Tears of the Kingdom. All right, number 30. despite putting hundreds of hours into it over multiple playthroughs? No, I did not. But, a great game. I love that Nick is like, go, go, go. The moment he sees something that triggers a memory, he's like, wow, this was a great game. You know, the cloth map on this game was so beautiful.
