This is a head gum podcast.
What's up fuckers? Just kidding.
Fuck? What?
I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. I have a new attitude.
Notice anything different about me?
I mean, part of it is your attitude itself.
I know. I'm Matt 2 now.
What?
Wow, Matt 2?
I'm Matt 2, I'm bigger.
Yeah, as you notice, you seem a little bit bigger, like in a good way.
I'm like a bigger, I'm bigger now.
Yeah, just scaled up, proportionally.
And based on the way you walked in the room, a little bit more confident.
A new, bigger attitude, baby.
I mean, okay, so you're slightly bigger.
Yeah.
But that's it, that's what makes you Matt too
Yeah, Matt, too
You know, I'm I gotta I gotta be honest says like you said Matt too is a little skeptical
But I think I'm starting to like Matt too because I'm realizing all that I liked about the Matt one is available
You're backwards compatible with Matt. Oh, yeah, it's all the same Matt experience, but just just a little bit bigger
Just a little bit more Wow Matt too, baby
Okay, I'm magnetic also the what?
Wait, what your magnetic? Yeah. Yeah, I got magnets in me now. You've got magnets in you and you're slightly bigger
You're mad too
Bigger let me test this out. I'm gonna toss my lucky silver dollar in the air. Whoa, it calmed right to him
What why do you need magnets? What do you do? What are the magnets do?
Okay
Why do I need magnets kind of a exactly the type of question? I don't know what I don't want to like in in
You know I don't I'm this has made me so anxious. They keep stuff on
What are your clothes magnetic?
Heather I You made me so anxious. They keep stuff on. What? Are your clothes magnetic? Heather, I hate to be rude.
Don't be stupid.
I feel stupid.
The clothes are bigger.
They're just bigger clothes.
Yeah, your clothes fit.
You're just like, up a size.
Yeah.
I guess that's kind of probably an annoying thing
about Matt 2.
You gotta buy all new accessories for Matt 2.
You gotta buy a whole new wardrobe.
You'd think that, right? Yeah. You don't have to. Really, all the Matt 1 stuff works about Matt 2, you gotta buy all new accessories for Matt 2, you gotta buy a whole new wardrobe. You'd think that, right?
Yeah.
You don't have to.
Really? All the Matt 1 stuff works with the Matt 2?
I guess not all the Matt stuff 1 works.
Matt 1 stuff doesn't work for all of it.
What are we talking about?
He's Matt 2 now.
What does this mean?
He's magnetic.
I'm magnetic and I'm bigger.
The fuck are you talking about?
I was one size before.
For a long time.
I was that size. Now I'm bigger. What's... Look, I I was one size before. For a long time, I was that size.
Now I'm bigger.
What's, look, I obviously am just bigger now.
And magnetic.
What?
Now you're getting it, yes.
Magnetic too.
What do you need the magnets for?
Tell me what you need the magnets for.
Did you put them, did you eat them?
Cause if so, I think you need to go to the doctor.
I didn't eat, if you're asking me if I ate
Like a handful of magnets like they were chocolate chips or something. Yes. I did do that. That's you
Immediately need to go to the hospital. No
What I don't have to they work for me now. What do you mean they work try it look pull my arm. What do you mean?
Okay, don't put it back put it back
See only some blood came out
Fine but it did it hatch pretty seamlessly
Look, it's like it's that was pretty well. It's like it's back. It's all the way back on
It's okay, I'm just man. I gotta get it cuz I still got the old arms that have the manual clips
Anyway, so yeah, but I'm just a little bit bigger than before. I like that too.
We make our previous version obsolete, and remember Ring Fit Adventure?
Oh yeah, Ring Fit!
As the Nintendo Switch is dead, long live the Switch 2!
This week on Get Played, your one-stop show for good games, bad games, and every game
in between.
It's time to get played. I'm your host, Heather Ann Campbell, along with my fellow host, Nick Weiger.
That's me, Tiger Weiger, along with our third host, Matt Appadaca.
Hello, everyone.
Hello, everyone, and welcome back to the premiere video game podcast for this week. It's Switch 2 Launch Week.
We're recording this on Switch 2 launch day.
The day of.
Wow.
The first day.
The first day.
What a day.
What a day.
What a nice time.
It's always fun when there's a new console,
it's always fun, right?
But when there's a new Nintendo console,
that feels different to me for some reason.
I posted a take on Blue Sky though.
Yeah, yes, I saw this and I liked it.
Which is that this is only, to my knowledge,
the second Nintendo system that is launched
without a major gimmick.
You've got the NES, which is the light gun,
the robot, all that shit's packed in.
The game pad.
I mean, that's like the thing, you look back,
I like that, that was the real revelation of the NES,
is that we went from joysticks to game pads.
We established controllers as the, you know, methodology
for all future generations.
Then you got the Super Nintendo.
Sure, there's a slight modification to the game pad itself,
but generally, the Super Nintendo is sold on,
now you're playing with power, super power. It's a more powerful console.
After that, you've got the N64,
which is weird across the board.
Very, very gimmicky controller.
3D Mario is also, at that time, a gimmick, right?
It's like, oh, Mario is 3D now.
You got the GameCube,
which comes with weird discs, handle, weird controller. The Wii is allD now. You got the GameCube which comes with weird discs, handle, weird controller,
the Wii is all gimmicks, the Wii U has a screen game pad, the Switch is your first portable
and home docked system, but the Switch 2 is just like Super Nintendo, it's just a more
powerful version of the thing that came before. It's a... That's right, Tim.
I don't think so, Tim.
That's what he said.
I think so.
Do you think they...
I mean, I don't think I've seen every episode.
He had to hit him with one of those one time.
And I think so?
Yeah, maybe.
Just to subvert expectations.
Why not?
Yeah, probably.
There probably was a joke at one point where he said, I think so.
And he's like, oh, I think I might be sick or something.
If you were born in the last 25 years,
like say if you're a 25-year-old person,
what the boys were discussing is an ABC sitcom
from the 1990s called Home Improvement
that featured Tim Allen.
He's now the star of some other show
where he plays kind of a racist, I think?
He's had three different sitcoms since then, I think.
Maybe four, actually. And he did the I think. He's had three different sitcoms since then, I think.
Maybe four, actually.
And he did the Santa Claus.
That's right.
And he's the voice of Buzz Lightyear, perhaps
his most famous credit of all.
I don't want to say, look, I don't want
to get too far into this.
OK.
When I used to work at the Improv,
he did a night at the Improv.
And it was like, everyone was like, oh my god, wow,
Tim Allen.
Buzz Lightyear, he's Santa Claus.
He opens his show talking about how he hates kids.
I was really, I was very upset.
I don't know, I feel like that kind of like,
counterbooking is probably really good for like,
his own, like his diversity.
Yeah, maybe, and then like, maybe it gives,
cause like, he's not ever like, super fond of the children
he's playing against anyway.
So maybe he doesn't have to do that much
Acting it's kind of also like the Bob Saget factor like yeah
RAP but like yeah his whole like it just was in the most family friendly stuff possible
America's whole funny's home videos and
You know what the hell was that show full house full house. Yeah, I want to call it family something, but it's not that Yeah, I was called a family house. Yeah
Full house, yeah, I want to call it family something, but it's not that, it's not family ties or family matters.
Yeah, I almost called it family house.
Yeah, family house is a good idea for a show.
It's not that.
Family living in a house.
A multi-generational family in one single home,
actually, you know what?
Pretty good. That's ours.
That's a pretty good sitcom.
That's pretty good.
But Bob Saget was like an extremely filthy stand-up comic.
Yes.
My parents watched the Tim Allen stand-up special
every time we had any kind of reunion
with any family member.
Oh, wow. So like, if the aunt came over, we were watching the Tim Allen fucking stand-up special every time we had any kind of reunion with any family member. So like if the aunt came over,
we were watching the Tim Allen fucking stand-up special.
Not my aunt, the aunt.
We watched it so much that if,
like I was a child, but I know portions of his routine
from just over exposure to them.
And there was a run he went on in his big stand up special
about sucking other guys' dicks.
And how men know men better than women do.
And who's better at giving a blow job than a man.
We should all be sucking each other's dicks.
And I think about that sometimes in the context
of how much society has shifted,
that that was a joyful, like it pop.
You know, the audience laughed and cheered.
And now if he said that he'd have to kill himself
immediately afterwards.
I didn't mean that.
There should be like a, you know how like people dig up
like old clips that have not aged well
and like use it as a way to be like,
this person's like bad now or whatever
They should do that for that. It's just like it's never the other way
It's never a take that's aged good that gets somebody brought down
Yeah, I was using the largest air quotes like possibly could because there are no consequences for anything
The Gameboy which is a gimmick because it's a portable video
game system.
You've got the Game Boy Advance, which is like a Super Nintendo in your hands.
It's not just color screen, but it's like a full gimmick.
It's also the Game Boy Player is part of it.
So you know, that's a, I guess.
You've got the Virtual Boy, which is insane across the board.
You've got the DS, which comes with two screens,
3DS, which comes with 3D without glasses.
They made the DS, they retained the dual screens of the DS,
but they made it like crazier and weirder needlessly.
Yes.
So like all of these systems have launched
with major gimmicks except the Switch 2,
unless you count the mouses as a controller,
the controller mice. And I don't think that that counts. That's like mouses as a controller, the controller mice.
And I don't think that that counts.
That's like the touchscreen on the back of the Vita.
Nobody gives a shit.
It's the closest Nintendo has ever come
to just a straight upgrade.
And even what you're talking about with the Super Nintendo,
it's like four face buttons, shoulder buttons.
Those were again, things that informed how input devices would
be for consoles from that point on.
So like they had some major innovations on the hardware side, as well as just like such
a seismic gulf in technology between 16 bit hardware and 8 bit hardware.
So yeah, that is, I like that observation. It's strange. It's the first Nintendo system that I can remember
in my life where I'm not like,
I can't wait to try the blank.
Yeah, let's see what the fuck weird shit
they've cooked up this time.
No, it just feels like the next generation Xbox
for the first time.
Yeah, very weird.
Yeah.
We'll get into it.
We'll talk all about that.
And we'll also look back on the Switch One.
But right now we have a question more generally
about this medium we discuss.
The question is, what are you playing?
What are you playing?
Hi, it's me, the Resident Evil Merchant
and I'm here to announce my segment.
What are you playing?
For those of you catching in with us for the first time,
I'm the guy who sells you weapons
in the original Resident Evil 4.
Since I fell on hard times and lost my source of employment,
the boys and lady and ranch of all,
they've offered me a job. And so I come in and I announce this segment.
Some people on Reddit hate me. Some people on Reddit like me. I fall somewhere in the
middle in terms of my personal self-evaluation. Anyway, I'm here to ask, what are you playing? And
I want to start with Mad Uppet Dogg.
I gotta say, yeah, that was like the most competent you've ever
been at doing this really hosted an episode. We remember I'll say
it again.
I prepared. I prepared so much on that episode.
Good table setting for people who might be joining us
for the first time.
Nice honor wrap.
Yes, sometimes you have to remember
it's everybody's first day alive.
That's true.
And I hope they're just blasting this
in the NICU somewhere for the babies, for the new babies.
I subscribe to the idea that we die every time we go to sleep and we wake up as a new
person.
Oh, interesting.
So we're all a copy of a copy of the-
The continuity of our consciousness is extinguished and we wake up with yesterday's person's
memories but our own new experience of life.
Man, so, okay.
Interesting.
We have a ship of Theseus sort of theory.
34 years of life, 365 days, whatever that math is,
I'm the Mickey 17, but that number and my name.
You're Matt 17.005.
Yeah, I don't know how many days it is,
I couldn't tell you now.
What's the way, you know,
because we've never solved the hard problem
of consciousness, who knows if it'll be figured out
in our lifetimes, but it's like,
why does being alive feel like something?
Yeah, I think too, just to-
And it's like, if we're saying this, this, this, but like to me, I feel like if your
theory is true, I feel like the same person I was yesterday.
So does that mean that consciousness, when it's reborn, transfers over?
Does that suggest some sort of spirituality?
When you experiment with anesthesia,
you can knock yourself out of consciousness
even though the body is alive.
Oh, what is that movie called?
Flatliners?
Yeah, Flatliners, you flatline yourself?
I never saw the remake, but I saw the original.
No, you can do it with an IV.
You don't have to die.
So you can knock yourself out.
And they think that the microtubules in your brain
discontinue their ability
to quantumly connect to consciousness.
Wow. Wow.
So by that measure, anybody who's ever had surgery
is not the same person they were before.
Well, I'm sure that based on the way things are trending
with science, I'm sure we'll have an answer any day now about what consciousness actually is then we can find out other mysteries
Like do we all see blue the same way right?
I heard the taste are different for people. Why am I always wet?
That's up there with some of the light with the great mysteries of the world
I think yeah, we'll get to the bottom of that for sure. Anyway, you guys should probably talk about video games before people shut the podcast
up.
Probably.

Look a couple big things happened.
Last week we couldn't really talk about Night Rain.
It didn't really mean Night Rain.
It had come out.
It had come out, it hadn't come out by the time we recorded.
It came out later that night.
I started playing this game.
And let me just say, I don't, look games playing like I'll play for tonight for tonight or like something like that a little bit
Not really my jam. Uh-huh. Not really getting online. I'm not squatting up. Hey, I'm a single player as they get
Yeah, I'm not really I'm not doing all that. I'm a campaign mode guy
I have transitioned from solo playing to almost exclusively squad playmant. Yeah. Playmant?
Playmant.
Playmant.
I like it.
I like playmant.
Yeah.
Squad playmant.
I typically am a solo guy, campaign guy, not hopping online.
In Elden Ring, you can summon people into your game. Or invade.
Or invade.
But I sort of still feel like that's a...
Fundamentally different experience.
It's a single-player game where you can interact with other players.
It's a stranding.
It's a stranding.
It's a stranding game.
We're all stranding these days.
This game, this version of this game,
is my fucking jam. Wow! Wow!
I'm loving this game.
I was kinda surprised, well I'm not surprised by this,
it's extremely fucking difficult.
Yeah, sure. It's very hard.
I think it's been balance patched since then,
since release.
I don't know how much easier it is to do solo,
but it seems like it is designed
to be a communal experience,
to play with three people,
or to play with two people as a party of three,
a trio, to take down these bosses.
I've done one.
I've done one with random people.
And everyone is, I've been reading a lot about people
saying, oh, you have to have friends.
You have to have people that you know,
so you can have like an, there's not chat in the game.
You have to have a way of chatting with the people
to actually succeed at this game.
Let me tell you something.
If you're just passive like me,
and you're not trying to ruffle any feathers
or make any strong choices,
and you just decide to follow one of the people,
you can get shit done in this game.
You can do quite well for yourself.
I'm just sticking close with whoever I happen
to be near with in the group,
because sometimes you'll either all be doing
that same thing, or sometimes you might either all be doing that same thing,
or sometimes you might be running off
doing your own thing, which I do think
there probably is a benefit to,
because the game ultimately does funnel you
to one place at a certain point.
There's like a ring of fire that encroaches on you
as time goes on.
But I'm just kind of like following people
and just doing stuff with them as a team.
And it rules, it's so fun.
I'm really, really enjoying myself with this game.
My experience, Matt, with it is very similar.
I've only squatted up with strangers.
My first run at a boss, we all got wiped.
My second run at a boss, we all won.
I was with two people who clearly knew each other
because I think their names were Guzzlord and Gaylord
and...
Be hell of a coincidence
But the way that they communicated with me is one of them was an archer and he would fire arrows at the thing he wanted me to do
Oh nice
Which I thought was a nice additional
Like I know that there are
beacons and pointers that you can lay over the map so that you can kind of guide like the structure
of your play, but there are little,
there are little toots.
You know, you don't quite know what it is
that somebody wants you to do,
but he had like an arrow and would like fire at a weapon
until I picked it up and I'd be like, and would like fire at a weapon until I picked it up
and I'd be like, okay, this must be a weapon
that I'm supposed to use.
I loved that there's no voice chat.
Oh my God, I loved that there's no voice chat.
I never wanna hear a random person
playing Elden Ring's voice.
No.
I don't need slurs introduced into already
a difficult experience.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. The things that I love about it, I don't need slurs introduced into already a difficult experience.
Yeah, yeah.
The things that I love about it, which will come as no surprise, is your movement speed
and no fall damage.
I was trying so hard to find my way down cliffs because you're trained by Elden Ring, that
anytime you fall, you die.
And the moment that people ran past me and leapt and I was
like oh are they just gonna kill themselves yeah and then land and keep
running I was like oh oh boy it's a sonic sonic experience but inside of
Elden Ring. Because then you also you can book it in this game. You can haul ass. Yeah.
It is it is so pleasurable to move in Night Rain. Yes, and I also like jumping and climbing stuff.
Yeah.
That's really fun.
I've been using the Wilder class,
which is your just classic strength build sword
and shield type of guy.
But I did find a too big of a hammer.
You know how the hammers are really big in those games?
And big hammer is really, really good.
I'm not usually a strength guy.
I usually go for like the magic builds
and there is a magic user that you can select from
but I've just been drawn to just getting in there close
and having a nice time.
But like the hammers do a lot,
like they can be, they look really big
but you can kind of swing them really fast, too.
They're really, really fun.
I really appreciate that the game,
even though you're funneled into these eight things,
you can pick up anything.
I mean, once in a while I would come up with a weapon
and I would be like, you can't use this
until you're level 10.
But generally speaking, if you're just running as fast as you can,
you can pick up anything, you pick up fire pots,
you just collect, collect, collect,
which is a very different experience than this sort of like,
at least in the initial night boss
or whatever the fuck they're called.
Night Lord.
The Night Lord.
That like the initial run
didn't have to be meticulous and careful,
it was just kind of like blazing forward
which was really exciting.
I played as the werewolf dude.
Oh nice, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I don't know what that class is called but yeah.
And each of these, if you haven't played Night Reign,
each of these classes has like a special move.
And the special move you get to use like once
and then charges up very slowly.
Every time you defeat something, you get a use like once and then charges up very slowly every time you defeat something you get a
Random selection of bonuses some of those are weapons some of them are like during your run permanent upgrades
Very much like 80s or whatever. Yes
Yeah, I enjoyed it what I did write to you guys is when I dropped in I was a little bum. Mm-hmm
cuz I I
you know my multiplayer experience
is absurdist bullshit.
Like it is just comedy constantly.
And finding myself back in the lands between
and being like, you know, the opening cinematic
is some sad person saying some sad, awful shit to you.
I was a little bit like, I don't really have
the emotional bandwidth for this,
in the same way that I did when Elden Ring came out.
Because it had been long enough since the previous
Souls game that I was like, okay, I'll dip in.
But it feels like Elden Ring has been kind of
semi-present in our lives, especially through DLC,
that I was like, it's fucking place again.
Kind of bummed me out.
I get that.
It is very hostile and unpleasant.
But what I like about it is that, I don't know,
I think I like that there's no talking.
And I do like that,
because I'm already familiar with the game,
so I already know how to play.
So the game is not going to be, and also that's not player
versus player, right? So that like I'm not gonna get taken out by
somebody who has all the time in the world to like be good at this game and
then I'm coming in like you know having played like only a couple of hours or
something and just get smoked immediately or whatever. The idea that we're working together
feels better than us working against each other.
And I also like,
I just like,
to me it is dark and scary,
but I just love the way that that game feels
and I've missed playing it.
So instead of replaying it,
it's fun to be doing a sort of different activity.
And the way leveling works is really interesting to me
is that in the base game,
I think I got to probably level 200-something plus.
No, it was level 800 or something.
You can get really, really high level.
I think the highest level I've gotten to this is like seven,
but it does make a big difference.
Seven, from level seven to level one, it's a valley.
It's like, you can become so much stronger
and so much more stamina or, you know, whatever.
And I'm just, I'm looking forward to getting back in there
and playing more of it if I have the time to do so.
I really like, just one last thought.
I like that the way you revive other people
is by hitting them.
Oh yes, that is very, very good.
It's pretty good.
It's extremely Heather-coated.
Yeah.
Get up, get up, get up.
Swam, wham with a big hammer.
But you know, if I have time to get back to it,
I'll have time to get back to it,
but my plate's a little full right now, guys. Right? But you know if I have time to get back to it, I'll have time to get back to it, but I'm
The plates a little full right now guys right I did I did get the old switch to and I got it right here in my hand
Look at that son of a bitch. This is the first time I physically saw the switch to
Since it's now yeah, I want to tell you something about this thing real quick. It's pretty good
It's dinner plate size. It's about to suck. Yeah, I'll probably eat my dinner on this. Yeah.
And you held that up like a fish you'd caught.
She's a beaut.
She's a real beaut.
And I will say she is pretty gorgeous, actually.
It's, like you said, it's exactly the Switch.
Yeah.
It's obviously a bit bigger.
It feels a little heftier.
I really like the, the screen is actually
a lot nicer than I thought.
It's not an OLED screen.
So fucking weird.
Very weird, very weird, but.
It's not weird, they're just gonna sell you another one.
I know.
They're not gonna fucking buy one.
Yeah, and I'll do it again, I'll buy it again.
I know, but it's just,
there's other ways to upgrade.
They could've sold OLED to open.
Yeah.
And then they could've sold color ways.
They could've sold us with like,
Yeah.
Like, there's so many other upgrades they could do.
Just start us with the fucking OLED screen.
But like, I had them on next to each other,
and like, man, like maybe the OLED's like a little bit
brighter, but this isn't, this is no slouch.
This is like a very nice looking screen.
Sure.
I've so far have downloaded Mario Kart World,
which was the pack-in with the bundle that I got.
I got, so I did a, I completed one cup in that.
And that is extremely fun.
Great. Mario Kart's just good.
Like it's like, it's exactly what you want.
Who did you main?
I picked Mario first.
Oh yeah.
Okay.
Game's named after him.
I picked him.
You know who I was almost gonna pick though?
Pauline.
Oh.
Okay. All right.
Oh no.
Calm down.
She's, she's.
Haroo.
Is she the yellow one or she she the mayor of Donk City?
She's the mayor of New Donk City. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Um...
Donkey Kong kidnapped her back in the day.
That's right. But now she's...
It seems fine.
I guess they get along now.
They get along now. Um...
Do you think that in the story of Mario Kart
that all these characters put aside their, like,
narratively consistent canonical rivalries
and they get together to race?
Or do you think that this is a separate reality
where none of these people, are they actors
or are they characters and this is a different instance?
It's like Earth Prime to me.
It's like a different reality.
You think so?
Yeah, I think so.
Because I know that in Smash Brothers,
they're not the characters.
They're not the characters. They're not the characters.
They're like dolls that come to life.
Yes.
Except for Sephiroth who's real.
Yes.
Besides he's gonna kill a bunch of toys.
But so far I've just had the initial setup stuff.
You can do a system transfer,
which then has transferred everything
from my Switch OLED onto here.
And I've done the upgrades for...
Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild, because I have Nintendo Switch Online,
so those are available to me for free.
And I have the GameCube Nintendo Classics emulator thing,
and I'm very excited.
I'm pretty sure that my first game that I'm going to complete on this is Wind Waker,
which is very funny to me
And then I also got the Street Fighter 6 port
Okay, because I'd be wanting to play it more and I feel like for some reason I'll play it more if it's on my switch
That's great. I'm um you know my main squad game is on
Switch to and apparently runs pretty well and comes with a brand new emote all you have to do is log in oh interesting
Get like a switch specific emote cool. What's the emote you catch a falling star?
Okay, and you you're happy with it, and you kind of
Hmm. I have that downloaded as well, so hopefully
I'll see you on there. Yep, then when you get your hand on yours. Yep
Should I do the magnetic?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, let's see it.
I'll do it into the microphone.
I don't know if it doesn't make that much noise.
Pretty cool, pretty cool.
Right.
Oh, it's pretty good.
Pretty good.
Matt just detached the Joy-Con and reattached it
for people who are listening.
That exposed pin, like that place where it connects
is so nerve wracking to me.
It's very scary to me as well.
But it seems like it's not really gonna be a problem.
I also have the pro controller coming,
so these will probably not get detached too too much.
Sure. Yeah.
But the point of connection on there,
the magnet seems so strong. It doesn't, they like, you know how like on the base one, the point of connection on there,
the magnet seems so strong. It doesn't, they like, you know how like on the base one,
like they're kind of, they're on rails,
so like they can get a little wiggly?
That doesn't, this feels like one solid piece,
which is very interesting to me.
Wow.
And yeah, I'm just happy to have it.
Have you tried the mouse?
I've not tried the mouse yet.
I'm not, I'm not tried the mouse yet. Okay. I'm not
I'm not gonna fucking do that. I'm not very interested in the mouse to be honest I'm really maybe for Metroid Prime, but I don't I'm not I was never a mouse
Controls guy to begin with I gotta try it. Yeah, so I'll give it a shot, but
I
Yeah, I'm not I'm'm not too interested in it.
I wonder if the Mario Galaxy Switch version
will implement that,
because there was more of a motion thing with that
that I haven't messed around with.
I think I might want wanna play through Mario Galaxy
since there's not a Mario for this just now.
You won't be disappointed, it's a great game.
Yeah, wait.
Are you gonna be able to use like mouse look on Fortnite?
You know, with the Switch 2?
I mean, in theory.
You could? I think so, yeah.
Inceivably to aim? Yeah.
Interesting.
So who knows, maybe, I mean,
hey, maybe I will have to do it,
but then I just play on the couch. So mean hey, maybe I will have to do it, but then I
Just play on the couch so like what am I gonna have to have a fucking mouse pad or something They're gonna somebody like Horry is going to release like a lap pad
Mm-hmm where you just have like a plate that goes on your lap and locks on your leg
Yeah, and then you can like move your mouse around on the leg put my dinner on that too
No, I can't be putting my dinner on all this stuff. You put your dinner on the switch too.
And you put the mouse on the lap pad.
I also got the camera.
I thought the camera, for some reason, I thought it was bigger.
It's like...
I know what everyone's gonna say.
This is actually pretty big. This is big!
It's this little, it's nothing.
What size would you say you were gesturing to there?
Like a stack of flapjacks?
Maybe the length of a number two.
What is that measurement?
What is that?
I don't know, a few pancakes?
That's a lot of pancakes, Nick.
I am, I'm pretty hungry.
Got on a hard day's work.
I've been on a pancake kick recently though,
let me tell you something.
I think I might have to change my order.
Why is that? From what to what? Well maybe pancakes is always number one? We've done this too. We've done this too many times
Pancakes are so fucking good. We've done what so many?
Do French toast waffles pancakes everyone yells at me. Yeah, well you're a fucking idiot
Yeah, that's my order that's actually you, you know what, that's pretty good.
I still like pancakes.
Yeah, they're all good.
They're getting the bronze medal.
It's not like one of them's like shit or something.
Rachelle, what's your ranking?
Waffles, pancakes, French toast.
I think that's fine.
That's valid.
I think Ranch is right, actually.
Mine's pancakes, waffles, French toast.
Just real quick.
Waffle first.
And then just by, it's not because I don't like french toast, it's that I don't normally
trust a store french toast.
Yeah.
So if I'm not making the french toast, I'm not gonna order it because it's usually too
eggy for me.
Well, yeah.
So I usually have waffle, pancake, french toast.
Yours probably has none in it because you can't get the damn egg open.
Get it open.
Yep. I it open.
I hear you.
I don't even remember what I was...
Bullshit.
Heather's eating shell crusted bread.
All of Heather's
Easter eggs are full.
I'd say that the camera is
about the length of a number two pencil. Okay the length
What the hell it's as tall as a number two pencil as long as I think so okay huge
But it's also like as thin as a number two pencil and then the oh, so it's skinny
it's skinny and then the the camera is about the size of
mmm It's a little bit bigger than a Reese's Mini.
I don't know what I'm.
It's about the size of the cap from a Sobe.
What the fuck is a Sobe?
Is that a drink?
I think it's a discontinued a so be life water
Okay, I got the camera then it's dumb and I got it I don't have any games that can utilize it currently I think
World oh yeah, oh yeah
I was course I'm gonna be chatting with my friends and in looking at each other while we're playing Mario Kart world certainly
But I'm just excited to have it,
and I'm excited that the Switch 2 is finally out.
I'm glad you got one.
We should, you should tell a story a bit
about you getting, you scoring one today.
Okay, so yes, this was,
this is a, this is what happened.
So I have a pre-order,
but I still actively do have a pre-order.
As do I, I have not received mine yet.
For a retailer that has not really been updating the way I would like, and now it's now coming
on Sunday.
Okay.
And for me, the host of a video game podcast, I felt like I had a responsibility.
Wow.
I felt like I had to come in here and be like, I got my hands on the Switch 2.
I got to give the listeners what they want. They want to hear I got my hands on the Switch 2. I gotta give the listeners what they want.
They wanna hear what we're saying about the Switch 2.
It's true.
Last night, Wednesday night,
I'm thinking maybe I stopped by Best Buy.
And I'm hearing it's a debacle.
It's crazy over at the Best Buy close to me.
Okay.
It's also close.
Well, I won't say who's close to it.
It's close to me.
And that's all you need to know about the Best Buy.
And so I'm like, ah, maybe I'll just have to wait.
I wake up this morning, my Switch 2 says it's coming on Sunday now.
It's not gonna work for me, cha-cha.
No fucking way.
Are you fucking kidding me?
I get a text, I wake up, it's like 7.30.
Kind of late for me.
You're an early riser?
I've been getting up earlier. Yeah.
Seven's like the, about the right time.
6.30, seven o'clock is the zone.
Are we all early risers?
Yeah, we are.
I get up in the six to seven range.
Yeah.
5.30 to 6.30 for me.
Rochelle, when do you wake up?
7.30.
Okay, all right.
Look at us.
Morning crew.
Morning crew.
We should record in the morning
Be great we we had done in the past the thing about it is it is good
You did it in the morning when I was in Amsterdam oh, that's right. We loved that. I loved it
Yeah, we hated that you were far away, but like if we showed up with coffees and did the record
Pretty good. I do it happen. Hmm. Give me the rest of my life
Do two records get big breakfast in between instead of the lunch or dinner
Ordering in pancakes what a nightmare
I'm gonna miss my arm. Ordering in pancakes, what a nightmare.
And so I wake up, it's like 7.30,
I already have a bunch of texts from my friend Jeremy,
who's already in line at another retailer next to us,
who he's like, I've been here since 5.30,
there's 11 people here,
it seems like everybody that's in line is gonna get one
and it seems like there's plenty to go around.
I got a free morning.
Yeah.
I'm like, I'm on my way.
I get there, not five minutes before they're about to open.
And I'm like, how's it looking still?
And he's like, seems like there's still plenty.
I get there, I'm the 19th person in line.
Wow. Wow.
They hand me a ticket, I go in,
I'm in the store for like five minutes. I get my to I get a nice little tote bag a sticker sheet a keychain
I get out of there and I get a switch to I didn't even I barely I
Rolled out of bed and went straight to the store. I didn't wow no delay at all. I got one
and then friend of the show
Zig Cody Ziegler is gonna be the recipient of my delayed pre-order.
That is so nice.
So there you go.
Yeah, there we go.
Everybody gets a Switch 2 here, folks.
We love it.
That's great.
Ranch, you gonna get a Switch 2
or you sitting pretty with a Steam Deck still?
Yeah, I don't need it.
Yeah.
I like the Steam Deck.
Ranch hates baby games. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Rattic. Rattic. Rattic. Rattic. Rattic. Rattic. Nick, you haven't said what you've been playing. Heather, thank you so much for asking.
I want to first shout out a game that I picked up on Steam that I have not gotten a chance
to put any time into yet, but I like that this game exists and I like this developer,
Strange Scaffold, also made click holding and I Am Your Beast.
There's a nice, Matty Myers, speaking of friends of the show, Matty Myers, the Great Triple
Click Podcast, is a polygon piece when making lots of small games is more sustainable than making
a big one.
And it's a discussion with the studio, Strange Scaffold's creative director, Zalavier Nelson
Jr., I think that's how you say his name, about how they keep budgets manageable by
limiting the scope of their games.
So this is like a six-hour game and it's like, I don't know, I just I kind of like that. Obviously, you'd want to hear from
developers who work in and, you know, the the stable as far as their experiences, not just the
ownership, but but like, it sounds like a good governing philosophy for an indie studio, just
like we're going to make a bunch of smaller games instead of trying to make these, these sprawling,
you know, more lengthier games
that are just tougher to develop
and tougher to make profitable.
But yeah, I mean, I'm gonna get,
I more just wanted to shout this game out for existing.
I like that they made a tactics game
with the Ninja Turtles, because why not?
Yeah, that's pretty cool.
Yeah.
I'm done with that.
Yeah, but I'll have some ants on impressions next week.
Part of the reason I didn't put any time into this
is because I am battling a full blown
Bellatro addiction once again.
I uninstalled this game like a year ago,
because I was like, I just can't have this on any devices
anymore.
And now I got it on
both game pass on PC and Apple Arcade Plus, and I'm just ripping through achievements I
Didn't have a lot of time this past week, and I put another 30 hours into game pass
I
Was like you had some
You had a little bit of time it sounds like
You know of gamer math though. Yeah, cuz like oh, I don't have a ton of time
What I mean played 30 hours. That's what I mean What I mean is that like every free moment I had I was spending with Bellacro and you know hours a day for six days
Is that partly why I maybe don't feel like I had a lot of time
Part of the issue here
The thing about the game is that it's you kind of feel like you're not spending that much time with it even when you are
Yeah, well, it's also
So many games now are not drop-in like Bellatro is a drop-in game, but there's still a pretty significant
Footprint to each of those rounds. It's true time to game though is very fast like Blotcher's a drop-in game, but there's still a pretty significant footprint
to each of those rounds.
It's true.
Time to game though is very fast.
You can start, you're in a game immediately.
Yeah, you're in a game,
it's pretty easy to pick up on a run
and reorient yourself on where you're going.
There's a lot of like UX elements that will tell you like,
oh, okay, oh, right, these are my jokers.
These are all my most frequently played hands.
I was doing this flush build or whatever the fuck.
But again, part of what's getting what got me,
and I mentioned this last week back on this,
is that because it's on Game Pass,
I was like, well, I have another place
I can get the achievements on.
And I love getting the achievements.
I talked about the impeccable vibes.
This game actually does help me get ready to go to sleep,
which is one good thing.
I'm not staying up late.
I'm getting sleepy while I'm playing this game at night, so that's helpful.
But part of why it's just such a joy to play is it's from a design standpoint,
it's so delightful the way the jokers synergize with each other.
People know Bellatro, I guess just real quick in case anyone has never played it and isn't super
familiar with it.
It's basically like you're playing – it's a roguelike where you're playing Hands of
Poker and you get some jokers that are sticky on your screen and each of those jokers does
some sort of modification to either give you a bonus or alter the rules of your particular
run. Here was a run where I recently had these two jokers that synergized well together that
it was not anticipating having as a duo and it was one of those things where it's like,
oh, I see how this is supposed to work as soon as it happened.
Trading card, this is one.
If the first discard only has one card to destroy it and gain three dollars and then the burnt joker
Upload upgrade the level of the first discarded poker hand
So I was just endlessly discarding low-rank cards
They'd get destroyed thinning out my deck tilting it more towards high value cards and then I get money as a result and simultaneously
by discarding a single card or by deciding discarding a hand
that had just no, didn't have anything more complicated than that, I was upgrading high
card every time.
So high card is just like, the level of that is just skyrocketing.
By the end of this run, I had like a 30 card deck that was mostly tens and face cards,
and I beat the final boss blind
with a single high card hand
because high card was like level 27.
It was just like, it was sort of the moments
where the game just feels like it's happening automatically
or so satisfying.
And that's what's so great about putting you,
this game just putting you in that flow state.
I also never really did the challenge runs previously.
I can't even remember if they were even
in the launch version or if that was later added,
but I've gotten deep into those.
They're very, very fun.
These are basically like, it'll be like a gimmick run where you'll have like five copies
of the egg joker, which gains value with each hand, but no other way to grind money but
to sell one of those egg jokers.
So it's just a matter of like, how deep, how much do I want to risk in order to get some?
Some payout and then that's just the amount of money I have. So how do I do I allocate those funds anyway?
Again, there's there's a reason I deleted this game
And it now basically occupies all of my thoughts
It's really a destructive force in my life and I regret getting back into it.
It's so bleak.
But it's fucking great.
It's a great game.
Yeah, it's just such a well-designed game.
It's just, I don't know, I think I said this before,
I think it's like a nearly just perfect design.
Yeah, it's an incredible design.
And it's also just aesthetically so pleasing.
Just those two, hey, speaking of synergies,
that really synergizes well,
where it just makes you feel good to play it
and feel very bad about your life.
All right, let's talk about the Switch and the Switch 2,
or I guess just the Switch, what are we doing exactly?
We're talking about the Switch and we're saying goodbye.
We're saying RIP Nintendo Switch, hello Switch 2.
That's right.
I was looking through the timeline for the Nintendo Switch
and it has been close to 10 years since it was announced.
October of 2016 was the first Nintendo Switch teaser.
I will cop to being completely wrong about the Switch
because it was coming off of the Wii U,
which I owned and enjoyed some games for,
but was a complete debacle.
And I thought like Nintendo has lost it.
And I see there basically,
it felt like they were doubling down on the Wii U
and this is being announced
and when the details are coming out.
And I'm also like, no one wants that.
It's just like, it's just a phone with like extra shit on it,
like with extra handles.
And then also like,
I can just have a more powerful console
that's just hooked up to my TV. This feels like this is satisfying neither
of those things. I was extremely wrong, could not have been more wrong. But I
really thought this was going to be the Switch was going to be their last console
hurrah. It was going to flop, they were gonna finish third place and
Nintendo was going to become a company that was centered around not hardware
but its IP. This is a huge shock to me, Nick,
because I was going into the Switch
more hyped about the Switch
than I had been for a Nintendo console
in a very, very long time.
I was like, oh, this is everything.
This is everything.
I remember doing an improv show,
like the night or two after the Switch was announced,
where the scene initiation was us just throwing chairs
around and screaming, the Nintendo Switch is so cool.
And like, everybody in the audience knew
what we were talking about.
And it was just like an infectious,
I don't remember obviously what the suggestion was,
but it was such an infectious scene.
Could it have been the Nintendo Switch is cool?
Huh? Could they have somebody been Nintendo Switch is cool? Huh?
Could they have somebody been like the suggestion?
The suggestion.
But it was like, there was from, at least in my experience,
my personal little world bubble, the hype was through the roof.
It certainly, by the time it came out, it had be like,
that had, we'd gone a little bit more towards that direction.
I guess I'm more talking about like in the run up
to its eventual release.
Like once we have like,
hey, Breath of the Wild is coming on this sum, bitch.
There's gonna be new Mario out this year.
I do remember trying to seek out a friend
helping me find a Switch.
I think actually at Target,
cause it was like, you know,
a bit of a tricky thing to find at first.
But yeah, and I don't know, in the run-up,
I was just like, I was skeptical
because it felt like, well, like,
what is Nintendo doing in their last two hardware,
you know, like items were the 3DS and the,
which did pretty well, not as well as the DS,
it wasn't the world beater that the DS was,
and the Wii U, which both felt like kind of,
just kind of janky, even though I liked games
on both of them, I don't know.
Anyway, I'm just admitting to being a dipshit,
admitting to being completely fucking wrong.
But I mean like-
Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.
But it just kind of speaks to,
I think even people who thought this was going to succeed
did not think it was going to succeed to the point
where it is currently the second biggest selling console of all time
and probably will be number one when all is said and done.
I'll say for me, I had never owned a Nintendo console before.
Whoa!
So this was my first one.
Obviously I had a Game Boy Color, a Game Boy Advance, a DS, and I was like hesitant to get a 3DS even because I liked I liked
my DS quite a bit but I was like 3D I don't know and then it took me seeing it
in person with somebody playing it to be like I gotta get one of these and I
didn't get one right away I got one I got the Ocarina of Time edition one so
that one's what that wasn at launch, I believe and
So then with the switch I was kind of like, oh, yeah, I guess I've never owned a
Nintendo console before
I wasn't like a hundred percent that interested in it. And then my friend Connor
Was like Matt. I got the Switch.
You gotta come over.
On launch day, he invited me over to his place.
He had invited a bunch of buds over.
He's like, we gotta see what the Switch is.
The Switch is gonna be crazy.
We played one, two Switch.
It was like, this is unbelievable.
This is so crazy.
We had a lot of fun playing the, what is that called?
Oh, like the cowboy dueling? Like gaming that that was fun
And I wasn't that even interested in Breath of the Wild which was dumb. I didn't know
I was like not really ever played a Zelda at that point. So I was like, oh, I don't know and then I didn't get one until
I think the holiday season
After launch the launch was March 3rd, 2017.
That was when it wouldn't launch worldwide.
And yes, as you mentioned,
Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, a launch title.
Yes, because I got mine when, yeah, it was around Christmas.
I got it.
And then I also got Super Mario Odyssey.
And that was the only game I had for a little while.
Yeah, and as far you know as far as
As far as its first year goes
Yes, Splatoon 2 I think the other big game because that was just like I mean that that's a franchise that is
You know a recent Nintendo franchise. That's that's really popular really there. They're they're big multiplayer franchise
but Mario Odyssey came out on October 27 and
I multiplayer franchise. But Mario Odyssey came out on October 27. And I don't know, it was by then it was pretty much evident that this thing was working. Like I like like everyone
who got their hands on it was like, Oh, I see, I understand the appeal that I can play
a again, the novelty of like I can play effectively a current generation console game in handheld mode.
Like that felt like something new.
It felt like too that like the,
just to go back to like the gimmick of it,
like was, I think,
like more present in the early goings of Switch,
where like, you know, you're flinging your wrist to be cappy or whatever,
and throw that around.
Arms was a big one.
Yes.
Arms, I remember buying Arms and being like,
oh hey, how about this?
And then I'm just like, I don't give a shit about this.
I mean, it's like, yeah, I think the motion controls element,
which again, are still gonna persist with the Switch 2,
but it's ultimately been de-emphasized.
It's mostly a console that people control,
like a conventional console.
Yeah, I don't know that there's a game
that people are still going crazy with,
really, these days anymore.
Maybe the WarioWare games,
and then maybe the Mario Party ones, but nothing else.
There was also a lot of front loading of like,
Splatoon and ARMS were like new IP, right?
And so-
There was already, I think there was Splatoon 2
that came out, so I think there was a-
Oh, the Splatoon on Wii U?
I think so.
Wait, hold on, let me look this up.
Splatoon eludes me.
I don't understand it,
and I don't think I care to investigate.
And I'm happy for the people that have it,
and I know that people love it.
I know that people love it very much.
I don't like the character design.
They're a little yucky to me.
That is a shitty barrier of entry for me,
but it's the same with World of Warcraft.
I was like, I don't like the aesthetic here.
I don't want to be making a mess.
But I feel like there was early on an emphasis
on trying new things with the Switch 2, or with the Switch.
And like, ARMS, I think, whatever the Splatoon title was.
Yeah, it was too.
The original Splatoon was a Wii U game
that came out in 2015.
Wow!
But it was like, hey, we're going to try new stuff.
Like, our experiences are going to be strange.
The Nintendo Labo was like a really wild product.
I bought the piano Labo and built the little piano
and was like using it to make
the Wii console operating system music.
Like, it was, I don't know,
there was kind of a joyousness to all of it.
Yeah, they were just trying stuff.
I mean, the Labo was the most classic Nintendo move,
I feel like of the whole Switch era,
of just like we're gonna have this weird
fucking cardboard peripheral.
Yeah.
That you're just looking at it like,
this isn't gonna work.
Like I know they're putting it out, this isn't gonna work like I know they're putting out
This isn't gonna work. I'm gonna get it. I never I never I never got it
There's like always a little bit like there's always extra things that they have yeah like amiibos even like I know people that have like a vast
Collection of amiibos you're looking at one. I well. Yeah, you got you have a lot of them I
kind of like with stuff like that I wasn't able to really like participate right away.
And that type of thing to me,
I would like to have been on the ground floor on
and got every single one.
Cause like the amount that I have, not great.
You're in the mushy middle.
Yeah, exactly.
I have quite a few of them,
but not enough where I could be like, check this shit out.
I wish I had every single one.
The display that they have at the store in New York
when I went, I was like, this is, I love looking at this.
I like seeing all of them.
It's cool.
They're very well done.
Yes.
Like they're not like, like because they're not articulate
in any, articulated in any way, they're little statues
and the statues are all on model.
None of the eyes are painted in the wrong places.
None of the detail, if you zoom in really tightly
on an action figure, sometimes you'll have,
yeah, the eye will be, they'll be wall-eyed,
and their mouth will be painted on their cheek.
And it's like, oh, what a bummer.
Every one of the amiibos is like, wow,
this is like what would be the prototype inside of Nintendo
where they're like, we want them to look like this,
except the whole line looks like this.
This is what they would put on the box
to show you what it could look like.
I think to return to something you said earlier, Heather,
I think, yes, Felt New, certainly
Breath of the Wild is such a different take on Zelda.
I think it's kind of like we live in now the world where that's just what the Zelda language
is, what the Zelda canon is, but it was such a departure from kind of how those games play.
And Splatoon 2, I think because the Wii U had basically no impact
Splatoon 2 felt new I feel like that was kind of like the introduction to the game Republic at large
and so yeah that first year is like there was a lot happening and a
Lot of consoles have like pretty bare-bones launches and pretty bad first years
It just takes a while for things to get going in And PlayStation 5 even, like it felt like they're mostly like,
okay, we're just getting the games that are also coming out
on PlayStation 4.
There's no reason to actually have one of these.
I mean, the Switch 2 launched with just Mario Kart.
I think Mario Kart's a great launch title.
It's the biggest game on the base Switch,
but there's not like, there's not three launch titles, right?
There's not like three major,
or even a second major Nintendo game at launch.
Obviously we have Bonanza coming out next month,
but there's not a,
the benefit of the Switch 2 is that
you can also just play all of your Switch games.
You have the Switch 1 library.
You have the complete library.
That I mean, like it makes a drop comparison
to the PlayStation 2, which is the other you know like it's like
the the next
Generation of the same thing with full backwards
Compatibility and part of the novelty is someone who got a PlayStation 2 at launch and there was fucking nothing to play
That was like a horrible launch. Yeah
Absolutely sucked and and it was was just a bunch of mediocre games,
but it kind of didn't matter
because it was just like the novelty of like,
oh wait, I can play my PlayStation One games
and they load faster and they look better.
I can watch Austin Powers on this.
Matt, absolutely, yes.
I can fire up this Matrix DVD.
And it's the kind of thing,
like you compare that with the Dreamcast launch
which was so great.
Just like three or four just banger launch titles.
Just like, maybe launches just don't matter.
Maybe, maybe just like, it's like the lifespan
of the hardware is, it's more important what happens
over the years as opposed to what happens in the launch
window because early adopters are gonna get it anyway.
I also think that to some degree,
these generations are starting to be defined
by like three games over the lifetime of the console.
And if you have those three massive games,
like your Grand Theft Auto 3,
like your Last of Us on the PlayStation 3,
like if you have like the big flagship title.
Hey, the halos on the Xbox. Yeah, the Halos. Then the rest of the...
They have one, too.
They also have... They have their good games, too.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Then the console is sort of under the umbrella
of that title, which has always been weird with PlayStation,
because it never seems like you know what that one's going to be.
Like, they're always, for example, trying to push Horizon as, like, the title one's going to be. Like, they're always, for example, trying to push
Horizon as, like, the title that's going to happen.
And it comes and goes without any sort of cultural footprint.
But, like, there's always some title on the PlayStation,
and it's like, oh, shit, did you play this?
Everybody's playing this.
I feel like for the last, like, few years,
it's been Elden Ring.
Like that was the cultural moment
where everybody was playing the same game.
Yeah, and obviously this is a larger thing
about just gaming in the, really the 21st century,
but specifically the 2010s on when basically everything
becomes, except for first party games,
become on every platform.
Yeah.
It's like, I mean, like, one of the launch tiles
you picked up, Matt, is Cyberpunk 2077.
Complete edition.
Which it's so strange for that to be on Nintendo Switch.
I mean, I guess Witcher 3 got a Switch port, I believe.
Yeah.
But it just feels weird for that to be on Switch 2,
but now just everything is on everything.
That's just the, so.
And it's a game that if I wanted portability,
I could have bought on Steam,
and didn't buy on Steam, on my Steam deck.
You could play it on your portal.
I could play it on my portal, but to me.
It has a slightly larger screen than Switch 2.
To me, it was very funny that the entirety of the game
is on a tiny little car.
I think there's also the tremendous novelty
of just being able to see a hog on a Nintendo console.
Yeah, that's gonna be interesting.
You get to hop into that character creation screen
and toggle between Penis One, Penis Two, Vulva, and off.
I think I might do an off play.
Yeah, I'll probably just give you a way to go.
I might just do my off play through for this one.
Also in 2018, we had the launch of Nintendo Switch Online,
which is like, I was like, oh, I forgot that that wasn't a part of the Switch from the get-go.
Interesting, yeah.
That came a little bit later, but yeah,
cloud saves, classic NES games, later like other classic,
and it's just like, it's like Nintendo's so annoying,
like you wanna, like, hey, it's cool that we have access
to these games, it's cool that there's actually a pretty
decent shell for playing these, you know,
that you can pause and rewind,
all these quality of life things that are in there.
But it's also just like, the game curation is weird.
Like there's certain like gaps that exist.
Like I don't know why certain things in their library
and certain things aren't, you know.
Yeah, like Mother 3, still not available.
Right.
But also, did you guys see that there's a CRT filter
for the new Nintendo Switch Online stuff?
Oh, for, oh, interesting.
I didn't know that.
Yeah, so that you can like,
fuzz it out a little bit so it looks
a little bit more authentically,
like the experience was designed to look.
Nice.
I'm not a fan of that particular CRT filter,
but I really, really, really applaud
the inclusion of it.
Yeah, yeah.
That feels like a non-Nintendo move,
kind of acknowledging, like,
oh, people like the retro aesthetic, you know?
Yeah, it feels like they're oftentimes
seeming to run away from that.
2019, we had the Switch Lite,
and I got a Switch Lite. I actually really liked my Switch Lite. I love the Switch Lite, and I got a Switch Lite,
I actually really liked my Switch Lite.
I love the Switch Lite.
The Switch Lite, I think is-
Just the unibody construction's so great.
Is the Switch, I think.
Now, if they did a Switch Lite OLED,
that would have been it.
That's what I really want.
And honestly, if they did that now,
I'd probably buy one.
I kind of think I would too,
which is kind of crazy in the aftermath of,
I now own a Switch too of crazy in the aftermath of I now only switch to yeah
I own the second one
But like because I know that they're not gonna do it
I don't know how impossible it would be for them to do a switch to light
I hope they do a switch to I hope here's their their three their three pathways. Yeah on the switch
I hope they do a switch to light a switch to OLED and a switch to XL
Look up even bigger one. Yeah
Give me a big give me a big one. I'll have the big one. Well, but I say that because
The tablet technology like the new iPads way the same as a yeah
Yeah
Like they're they're so thin and they are so light that it's like, I don't even feel like
I'm holding a device anymore.
So you could maximize the real estate on that screen
and have it be a big, big screen.
It would be a big boy.
And it wouldn't, like that's kind of what,
that's kind of what the portal did.
It's like the screen is a huge screen.
But then they have to make the Joy-Cons bigger
or do the same size Joy-Cons just snap into the screen?
I think the same size joy cons snap into the screen
I think the same size joy cons with a big screen. Hmm call it the XL look. I like it
I think I think I think they should go the other way actually and make a small one make that make a very small one
That you could put in your pocket actually switch mini. Yeah, switch to mini. I want the commercial to be like you're a big dog
This one's for the big boys
They get Sam Elliott to do it
I'll watch this like yeah, all right
Switch for me. He's talking to me. I'm a big dog. I
Want to as long as we're being nostalgic about the switch. I want to take a moment to talk about how?
Breath of the Wild was everywhere.
Like when I was talking about like,
you just need the three or four games that define a console
and it doesn't matter how strong your launch is.
That being said, the Switch launching
with Breath of the Wild was crazy.
Like people who weren't gamers were like,
hey, do you have Breath of the Wild?
Yes.
Like it was, and this was also like peak Twitter era.
So like there were constantly people talking about it
on online, like it felt very significant.
And it's very lucky that that game,
which was developed for the Wii U
and incorporated the concept of the Wii U controller
into the gameplay was so easily shifted into the Switch.
Right, yes.
Because like the Sheikah Slate is supposed to be
the Wii U controller.
Yes.
I don't know, I don't think often about Breath of the Wild
as like one of my favorite games or anything,
but at the time I was like, this is a really, really, really, really great experience.
And the truth is, I think that was diluted a little bit
by Tears of the Kingdom.
I didn't like Tears of the Kingdom as much.
I love Breath of the Wild.
I played the shit out of Breath of the Wild.
You're right, Heather, that I do know a number of people
who are casual gamers or even would even call themselves
non-gamers that A, own a Nintendo Switch and B be a put hundreds of hours into Breath of the open world formula that we're all kind of exhausted
by now, but it's kind of just like the best version of that.
Yeah, it was interesting that it took me so many times.
I think it took Tears of the Kingdom getting announced for me to actually give Breath of
the Wild a fair shake again.
I'd probably started it and bounced off of it a few times.
Then once I got into it, I was like, Oh, I don't know what I was.
I don't know what the fuck was wrong with me.
It's so good.
But I think I'm one of the maybe rare people that was that liked tears more
than Breath of the Wild because I liked building stuff.
I enjoyed building stuff.
But at a certain point I was just like, this just feels like a game about crafting.
And I just got like, I just got less invested and I got kind of burned out.
I think also just because I put so much time
into Breath of the Wild and it's just like,
in a way it's kind of like more Breath of the Wild.
I kind of want to play through them both again,
but with the new Switch 2 version.
Maybe that'll get me playing through
all of Tears of the King
because there was stuff in that game I really liked.
It's weird that Breath of the Wild
is now a three generation game.
It's very Last of Us.
It's very Grand Theft Auto V.
Very Witcher 3.
I mean, I feel like these games just have long shelf lives now.
People keep playing them.
Matt, so as far as games for you,
there was in 2019 Pokemon Sword and Shield Shield comes out in November of that year.
Now, I could be wrong.
This is the first proper Pokemon game
for a home console, right?
They were almost, they were all on handhelds previously.
I mean, there were obviously things like Pokemon Snap,
but as far as like here's how-
Yeah, Pokemon Stadium and stuff like that.
Pokemon Stadium, yeah.
This is the mainline because Nintendo had now merged
its handheld and console lines into the Nintendo Switch,
we finally had a Pokemon that you could play on your TV.
Yes, and this was very exciting to me
because I had never seen that before.
And I remember when I booted it up,
I had like a tear in my eye
because I was playing Pokemon on my TV.
And I was like, look how far we've come.
And then it was like, this game's okay. Yeah, it was, I put some significant time
in a Pokemon on the Switch.
And I was also like, kind of just, it felt beige.
It was like kind of boring.
And like, it was still pretty like ugly.
I don't know if that was ever remedied,
but it was like kind of an ugly game.
Doesn't seem like something they'd fix.
I know that Scarlet Violet has received
a enhancement as well, and I'm interested
in getting back in there and looking at
an unpolished turd run at 60 frames per second.
I do like the game fine, but there's like,
look, I'm gonna need to be playing stuff on my Switch too.
There's like, I can get back in there, why not?
Why don't they just make it a fucking classic?
Like, who wouldn't buy classic Pokemon
except when you're in the battle screen, it's 3D?
I look, I would take HD 2D even.
Yeah.
I don't need it to be 3D. We know better than this multi-billion dollar company. I look I would take HD 2d even like I
Don't need it to be we know better than this multi-billion dollar company. Well. Here's the thing. I think I fucking do
They do a bad job
They do a strange job. Yes. Yeah, not a bad job. Everybody loves it. Everybody bought the switch. It's just weird I don't know, I mean, like, I did, and Pokemon is not my franchise,
but you can speak to this more,
but I feel like these games could be as polished
and as aesthetically pleasing
as, like, other flagship Nintendo first-party efforts.
It feels like these games are,
they have a bit of jank to them,
and it's just like, you want them to,
can they at least look and sound awesome consistently?
You know, I did like the soundtrack of Scarlet
and Violet quite a bit actually.
But I think the thing that,
and this is not a good enough of a reason,
these games are primarily for children.
They're not designed for people who are like
Pixel hunting and like frame, you know concerned about frame rate and things like that
They're just like they are there for children
and so I think there's just like less of an emphasis on making them look good and like
interesting to the people who would find that interesting like us or you know
Whoever any adult that's been playing the games for a long time versus a kid who watched just to see
like their favorite little guys which is also me so I'm a man with no country
here I don't know what what side of it I'm supposed to be on but side note
man yeah I am so broken-hearted that Trubbish and Garbodor, or how do you say it? Is it Garbodor? I don't know, Garbodor?
Garbodor?
Garbodor?
Garbodor.
Yeah.
What about them?
Are both basically unplayable cards
in Pokemon the Card Game Pocket.
Look, I don't know who to talk to about it.
It's frustrating.
I tried just because I wanted to see my boys.
I'm hopeful that the next one,
I mean, so far from what I've seen,
it doesn't look that nice.
Oh, well.
But I'm hoping that it's good.
I did pre-order it today, straight from the Pokemon Center,
because it comes with a free mystery plush.
Hey there.
I'm thinking about maybe whatever plush I get
will be the starter that I pick.
That might be kind of fun.
That's cute.
2020, obviously we have the COVID-19 pandemic,
which corresponds really closely
with the launch of Animal Crossing New Horizons.
And I mean, you're talking about the game of the moment.
I mean, that was like really, I feel like what everyone,
everyone, like first off, there was a rush
on switch hardware
Yeah, like like people were trying to get their hands on switches because everyone was so stir crazy and just wanted something to do
And it felt like the world was ending but also animal crossing
As has been talked about to death
It gave people a sense of community and it was like a game about like being outside with your friends
Yeah, you can get on,
you can visit each other's islands
and see people you haven't been able to see safely
and then you can download Nintendo's bad app
and then talk with people in the bad app.
What a weird, weird, like Mary is, you know,
kind of a dip in,
dip out gamer, my wife Mary.
And she went, she was fully committed to Animal Crossing
for those few months before,
like from March until July of that year,
that was like hours and hours of her day
when she wasn't working remotely.
It was wild to see.
I've talked about this before, wasn't working remotely. It was wild to see.
I've talked about this before,
but our friend Alexis Quasarano had a, just a, like I thought it was like,
hey, I built a little tiki bar on my island,
my island's doing pretty good,
and then I visited her island and I was just like,
I don't know what the fuck I'm doing.
It was like the most gorgeous art installation
I'd ever seen.
That's the thing, visiting people's islands
was such a bummer to me because.
Like fuck, this is so much better than mine.
I have such poor planning skills in that department.
So trying to make it nice,
there would always be some other problem.
It'd be like plugging a hole in a boat
that has a hole in it, and then another one would pop up
and be like, well, this is just,
all of this is now just kind of like wrong.
And so I'd see people on there
and see what their islands did, and I liked theirs,
but mine was always just a fucking mess and a disaster.
One of my favorite memories was Nick visiting my island
and I dug a hole in front of him
and typed in the chat, get in.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I had forgotten about my island until I saw screenshots
or something recently.
Yeah.
And I had, at my island, I had, I had,
I don't know the word that's the least bad. Half of the island was my house
with a huge barrier of trees all the way around it.
And it was immaculately landscaped and felt like Versailles
with like a single entry point
and an extremely long walkway half,
like halfway up the island to get to the house.
And the rest I had like crammed everybody together
and didn't do anything.
So it looked like I was like a king with,
and I raised that part of the island
so it was much higher than everybody else too.
That's so funny.
You're a feudal lord,
and these are the peasants toiling on your land.
Yeah, I was a feudal lord,
and when I would like,
also because the pathway to get into the gardens
of my house was so like far removed from everything.
I almost never had people wandering around in the gardens.
It was pretty, it was pretty fun.
I really, this is the, the Animal Crossing
I finally got super into.
I played some previously.
We talked about this when we did our episode on it,
but it's just like, yeah, it's just the perfect game
for that nightmarish time.
And it also, you know, like I, it weirdly,
games for, games in that era in general
kind of weirdly gave me a sense of purpose
just because I had tasks, you know what I mean?
And this one in particular, I think just because
you were building something and it was about community.
And also it's like light and wholesome
and kind of low stakes, you know?
It's a, and hey, it doesn't hurt that Isabelle's in it.
That's my wife.
I remember that, you know, every app started doing
that thing where they're like, they calculate your time and how much time you
spent in something, and at the end of the year tell you, you did this on this day or
whatever.
I remember when Nintendo did it, I was excited to see it.
It pinpointed that the day that Animal Crossing came out, I played it for 14 hours straight. My most standout game of the Switch era though, the game that stayed with me the most and
also as of our last ranking of all of our favorite games of all time is my number one
was Disco Elysium.
Oh yes.
Which I played, I know it's available on everything, but being able to play a game that moving and deep
and I don't know, like it was such a lush,
righteous experience of a video game
and being able to walk around my house
and like change where I was playing it.
Like the disco Elysium time is like a golden moment
in my memory.
Well, I think that that speaks to something
that I was going to touch on it.
And I think this is a good time to get into it.
The Switch, a big part of its success
and maybe partly also because of its success,
because of its omnipresence,
it became like the ultimate like indie gaming console.
And again, you can play these games on anything, and like, you know, a lot of game passes kind
of maybe change that up a little bit.
And also, you know, but the thing is still probably Steam is like the default indie gaming
platform.
But still, as far as consoles go, a lot of, like a huge swath of gamers are having access
to games that they wouldn't otherwise play because there's such a large indie library.
One of my favorite games of all time, I obviously is on everything and playing it on other platforms
ultimately, but I first played Hades on Switch and I absolutely loved Hades on Switch.
I think it identified it to me as a Switch game first.
Another of my favorite games, Celeste,
I also like played via, I played on Switch.
And again, you know, there are people who like,
it's their one console.
It's the only thing they have
and that you could play games like this.
Into the Breach was another one,
another multi-platform indie game that is a tactical game
and was my favorite game the year it came out.
It's like that was another one I played originally
on Switch and was perfect for Switch
because of the way the four by four tactical grid
was set up.
So many of our early, how did this get played titles
were also on Switch because it was a dumping ground
for some of the weirdest fucking shit.
There was a lot of weird shit on there
and also when we had guests more often,
guests were, you ask guests what platforms they have
and they're like, I got a Switch.
Okay, we can find something on Switch.
And you play this like panties game.
Exactly.
And you play this bicycle through the sky game.
Both games we played with Ify.
Yeah, that's what I'm gonna say.
I think these are games Ify, you don't we played with Ify. Yeah, that's what I was gonna say.
If you want to play a pitch.
I want to do panty party.
Wait, let me look it up.
Now, I...
Someone else talk.
What are you looking up?
I said four by four grid. It's not a four by four grid into the bridge.
He's got to correct himself. He's got to fix his own mistake.
We didn't know. I've not played it.
I know, but someone's gonna.... Honestly, it's totally fine.
It's weird that he always knows
that people are talking about him online,
but doesn't have an online presence.
So he's conjured this group of people that he never reads,
who are always correcting and chastising him.
Am I wrong?
No, you're 100% correct.
It's an 8x8.
I've never said anything incorrect, so it's impossible for me to even understand what the feeling is.
As long as we're talking about what people are talking about online,
I've got a lot of messages over the last week because Final Fantasy Tactics was announced as a reboot or remake or whatever,
like a highly upgraded video game release.
And I wanna clarify for the listener,
the game that has ruined my life
because I've put so many hours into it and not beaten
is not Final Fantasy Tactics,
but a very different game,
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the Game Boy Advance.
It is a much smaller in scope,
yet for whatever reason,
unfinished game for me.
Tactics is the one with the great story,
the legendary-like writing,
the fantastic score.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is a game
about Final Fantasy XII being a game that exists
and kids get sucked into it.
Is that true?
Yes.
You gotta let this go.
I can't.
I mean.
I mean.
By the end of 2020, the Switch is the best selling
Nintendo console in Japan, which is really saying something
because, you know, as far as the Japanese console market goes,
that's pretty big.
2021 OLED Switch comes out, Metroid Dread,
but here's the thing,
by 2021 it kind of is starting to feel like the Switch
is even waning a little bit, doesn't it?
I mean, obviously it keeps selling like hotcakes.
I buy an OLED Switch.
There are games that come out in subsequent years
that I play and enjoy.
But I felt like I was playing fewer and fewer Switch games.
Maybe this speaks to kind of what you're saying
of just like some people are just playing the same games
over and over again.
Well, also, but like what, after 2021,
which is four fucking years ago,
what are the major Nintendo releases
other than Tears of the Kingdom on the Switch?
Like, what are, like, your showcase titles that everybody's like, oh, I've got to get
my Switch out and start playing again?
Metroid Prime Remastered?
No, I mean, I basically have the list here.
Metroid Dread, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which was great, and Xenoblade Chronicles
3, which I have not played, but people who are fans of those games.
Oh yeah, I played Xenoblade Chronicles. Love Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which I have not played, but people who are fans of those games. Oh yeah, I played Xenoblade Chronicles.
Love Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
Isn't that a remake?
Wasn't that a Wii U game?
I don't remember which Xenoblades came out for what.
Yeah, it's kind of tough.
There's so many of them and it's a hard word to say.
And so many of them were like a re-release.
That's right.
So maybe it was original, maybe it was, it was not.
I loved it and for whatever reason bounced off it
And I can't remember why
Switch is also the persona system for me. Oh, yes Wow, maybe I'll finally finish persona 5 on
On the switch to oh man. It's a
Look, I have finished persona 5. I played it on PC
persona 5, I played it on PC, Persona 5 Royal, I think it's worth finishing.
But I think both those big honking atlas games
in recent years, Metaphori, Fantasia,
and Persona 5 Royal.
Hey, if they were even supportive of Metaphori, Fantasia,
I'll get it for the Switch too.
It's on Game Pass now, I just saw.
That's the thing about the Switch live area
is that there's not every case,
but there's some great ports on the Switch live area is that like there's not not every case But there's some great ports on the on the switch
And that's that's always so fun to have a game that you have at home that you can take somewhere else is very nice
I still haven't fucking played Final Fantasy
Like this Final Fantasy 7 rebirth. I still haven't fucking played rebirth. Rebirth? There's too many fucking games. There's well
God, I was I wasbirth, and then I started playing
Player Obscura.
Player Obscura, Expedition 33,
and then I started playing Blatro.
You gotta get back to, I think this is a nice moment,
because I think, the thing about Mario Kart World,
I have to get too into Switch 2,
that's not gonna take too much of your time.
You're gonna play a little bit,
you're gonna chip at that over time.
No, I'm a dick around with it. I don't even love the Mario Karts or's not gonna take too much of your time. You're gonna play a little bit, you're gonna chip at that over time. I'm gonna dick around with it.
I don't even love the Mario Karts or Kart Racing games
all that much to begin with.
I'll have it, because that's the version I ordered,
but I'm not gonna get too addicted to it.
It's a nice time for you to get back to Rebirth, I think.
I should, wait, you're saying Rebirth,
not Clare Obscure Expedition 33.
I'd say go back to Rebirth.
I think I could do Clare Obscure first,
because that one I was playing more recently,
and that's a much more manageable campaign. I don't know if I could jump right back to Rebirth. I think I could do Claire Obscure first, because that one I was playing more recently, and that's a much more manageable campaign.
I don't know if I could jump right back
into the 120 hour game.
Yeah, but then you'll finish it.
I will finish it, eventually.
I'm redesigning my office,
and I think it's going to be a transformative moment
for gaming for me.
I love this. Wow.
So I think that there's a good chance
that I'm gonna have more solo player experiences
once my office is full time.
You know what I'm realizing was also like
just a huge chunk of my gaming time
in addition to me being out of town
which disrupted things, but it's just like,
oh yeah, we just did an episode of Mother 3.
It's a big Hawken game.
Yeah, we all finished a 30 plus hour JRPG.
Which he could have done in a week
if he hadn't been playing board travel.
That's the thing, yeah.
Let's see, so yeah, we had the 2022
and also the Switch becomes a third bestselling console
of all time.
It's sold more than the Game Boy at this point,
which can crazy to think about
that with how ubiquitous the Game Boy was.
That is, cause I I mean look at the
Like the Gameboy before it it was in the hands of non non gamers. Yeah casual gamers got very into
Yeah, Mary is a switch. Yeah, hey you tied the Gameboy in the hands of non gamers
There's a there's a famous photo of Hillary Clinton playing Tetris. Yes on their plane
Tetris is a good game. Whose plane was it?
Who's plane was it? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha start to hear rumors of the switch to in development, which eventually comes about.
When do we actually get the announcement?
Was it 2024?
It must have been.
I feel like the turnaround from the announcement
to the release was very, very short.
I was just like, was it actually this year?
Which is why me winning the vet was insane.
Yes.
Because usually there's like a long lead,
but it was just like, I think it was January of this year.
I think it was.
And I was like, it's gonna come out in the summer.
And that felt optimistic on my part, but.
Yeah, no, you were right.
January 16th, 2025 was when it was like,
hey, we're actually confirming it.
And then the full specs came out on April 2nd.
Cause yeah, prior to this.
So it was a very quick turnaround,
and things kept surprisingly under wraps.
Yeah, well, surprisingly under wraps.
A lot of it leaked right before.
Like, a lot of the details of what it was,
the magnetic rails, the mouse thing.
None of it was confirmed, of course,
but it was like people had documents documents for some reason and there was a
Third party manufacturer that had a mock-up one to showcase
Like cases and stuff like that and that was a whole thing. Yep
Do you remember we did a do you remember we did an episode of Ring Fit Adventure? Yeah, that's right
Yeah, not compatible with the switch to that's really funny
Yeah, cuz it's you snap a Joy-Con onto it.
You can't do it.
I guess maybe if you pair, I think
you compare Joy-Con 1s to the Switch 2.
So maybe there's a roundabout way to do it.
But so far, yeah, no.
Oh, man, that made me realize that I'm
going to have to keep a Switch, because I can't have
a dead accessory in my collection.
I'm keeping my Switch.
I'm trying to convince my wife that she wants to play
Hello Kitty Island Adventure so I could buy it
and then when she gets tired of it, I could play it.
We didn't really dig in too deep on Mario Odyssey
or Mario Wonder.
Both, and I guess also we could shout out Mario 3D World,
which had a switch, plus Bowser's Fury,
which had a big switch overhaul,
and made that game accessible to a lot of people
for the first time, because people didn't know it was you.
Odyssey was incredible.
Loved Odyssey.
It's an insanely wonderful game.
Odyssey is so good, and it's just like that core gimmick
of throwing the hat on things, of a capy on guys sustains itself and also
plays out so magnificently in the end game one of my favorite final levels ever
one of the most satisfying like like bits of power fantasy you get at the
the back of the game reminds me that the very end of Half-Life 2. I haven't played
Odyssey in like eight years.
Like since I got it basically.
And I've been thinking now is a good time
to get back into it.
I might replay the entirety of Odyssey again
just to experience it again.
Odyssey is phenomenal.
I loved Mario Wonder, you know, not as much
but it is just like, it is such a triumphant game.
It's such a refined design.
Heather didn't like it.
I didn't like Wonder.
Oh, I really liked it.
Heather loves Sonic Frontiers, but doesn't like Wonder.
I liked the Sonic game that came out
the week that Wonder came out.
Oh yes, that's right.
Yeah, you did.
Fuckin' I love Sonic.
Yeah, what was it called?
Interesting.
I also like Sonic for dares.
I also like Sonic Mania, which was a game that I played on Switch.
Sonic Mania is very nice.
I strongly associate it with Switch.
Sonic Generations.
Sonic... what was that one called?
There's no way to know.
There's no way to know.
My phone is charging across the room.
I'll never remember the name of the Sonic game that came out during the week of wonder.
It wasn't Colors. It was... Alright, I'll look remember the name of the Sonic game that came out during the week it wasn't colors it was I'll look it up Sonic captain
Sonic Captain Sonic would be pretty cool yeah pretty good ocean levels yep in the
end he flies a airplane yeah full of actors yeah one thing I do I also want
to remember I want to want to mention just while we're going on memory lane is
for me I think I really strongly associate with the Switch
is the Super Smash Brothers Ultimate announcement.
Oh yes.
Where Sakurai revealed,
everyone is here,
which is one of my favorite announcements in gaming ever.
Yeah, that really did something to your brain, I think.
Everyone is here.
What a great way to announce that the roster includes
every playable character in the franchise's history.
What an awesome way.
Like first off, what a crazy design choice.
It's like, hey, you know what?
Every single character we've ever had,
we're just gonna put them all in this one game,
and it really will be the ultimate experience.
But then they've announced it by saying everyone is here
It's that alongside new funky mode or to like new
So so wonderful because they can't go back from that they can't know
Yeah, they have to now include every single character they've ever had in the games
Maybe some DLC characters won't get the same. Yeah treatment like Sora is probably one and done
Yeah, right, but I really like I mean gosh Maybe some DLC characters won't get the same treatment. Like Sora's probably won and done.
Yeah.
But I really like, I mean, gosh,
I wish I liked Smash Brothers more, if I'm being honest.
Me too.
I like it for like a few minutes and then I'm like,
well, I'm not as good as my friends are at this game,
so I don't like it.
Yeah.
I loved the original Smash Brothers on Nintendo 64.
I loved Melee.
And from that point on,
I never really had as much of a connection
with the franchise, but I still get every entry
and mess around with them.
But for me, just like a lot of the appeal of those games
was just couch multiplayer.
Back when I like lived in an apartment with a,
and had a bunch of like friends my age
who would like want
to come over and play.
I do have to say just back to the the Mario games for a second.
Yeah.
Odyssey, Wonder and 3D World plus Bowser's Fury.
Yes.
3D World is maybe my favorite Mario game.
Just full stop.
Okay.
3D World plus Bowser's Fury
is my favorite Mario game on the Switch.
I think that package is an absolute home run.
Cause what they did with Bowser's Fury,
did anybody else play Bowser's Fury?
No. I want that to be the next direction for the next whatever 3d Mario game is.
Okay.
Cause I loved Odyssey.
I think Bowser's Fury is a step in the right direction.
What made it special?
It felt so big.
It felt like, even though it's like not a big game
I think you can finish in like four five hours or something, but like it just like it's it's it's I
Don't know it's it's it's open world. It's big. It's ambitious. Yeah, it feels like it's trying something kind of novel
And it feels how you like it's how you like Sonic frontiers actually okay?
It's like it's just all of its there. It's all out and so you just run to the next area, actually. Oh, okay. It's like, it's just all of it's there.
It's all out.
And so you just run to the next area.
Yep.
Oh, it's interesting.
Yeah, I like it a lot.
Because if I was gonna pitch what Mario should do next,
it would be Tears of the Kingdom.
It would be like, oh, it's just one big place.
It's kind of like that, where like all the places,
all the levels are just out and about,
and you just go to the levels.
Interesting.
It's very cool, I like it a lot.
Wonder came out the same time as the Sonic game,
Sonic Superstars, of course.
There it is, Sonic Superstars.
That's why it can't be remembered,
because what, why would you name it that?
Every other Sonic game has a kind of a nice catch,
a catchy name.
I wish there was more representation for some of the other Mario franchises.
Like there's a couple of great Donkey Kong games on there, of course.
Tropical Freeze, which has the aforementioned funky mode.
Man, I love Tropical Freeze.
And then the HD remake of the the 3DS Donkey Kong Country Returns
just came out
You know a couple months ago or whatever And then Metroid I mentioned retro at primary mastered in Metroid dread Metroid dread probably one of the better one of my favorite games on
The switch actually a game that I got all the way to the final boss and did not finish
And I you know there's other ones that they like they just cut like they haven't made a decent
Starfox in quite a while, but that Kirby game. It was great. We game
Forgotten in the forgotten world mouthful mode. Oh, man
Yeah, no shit. This guy loves it all right, but the great thing about that one
Is that it's getting a switch to enhancement and additional content which I'm very very excited
I'll 100% mess around with that.
I have the list of the best-selling
Nintendo Switch games worldwide.
What's crazy about it is the top 20,
I mean, I guess this is not that crazy about it,
it's what you'd expect with a Nintendo console,
the entire top 20 is games published by Nintendo
and or the Pokemon Company.
Yes.
The highest rated third-party game on the list or highest highest rated third party game on the list
or highest ranked third party game on the list
in terms of sales is number 24, Monster Hunter Rise.
So-
A game I bought and played for an hour.
So then the Switch is just the play,
you have to have a Switch so you can play those 20 games.
So you can play Nintendo first party games.
But the thing is like, again, from what I've heard
from indie developers, indie publishers,
the Switch was a boon to the indies
because it was such a, even if those games weren't showing up,
the only indie game, I think, that's in the top anyway,
in the top 30, top 50 is Stardew Valley.
Even though those games weren't showing up on these sales
charts, they were still moving a bunch of units on Switch, just again,
because it was everywhere.
Is Mario Kart, it's gotta be number one.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, do you wanna try to guess?
Wait, that's number one, that's my guess.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is number one, yes.
Yeah, I was like, the reason that Mario Kart World
is the launch title has to be that Mario Kart
was the best selling game on the Switch.
Yes, yeah.
No, by a bit of a margin.
I mean, like, number two is Animal Crossing New Horizons,
and it sold like 15 million more units than it did.
So it's 62 million copies of Mario Kart, age-illuxe worldwide.
Jesus Christ, that's a lot of games.
Juggernaut.
62 million?
How many Switches worldwide?
Ah, shit, I don't have that number in front of me. Let me be interesting because it's obviously it's not one-to-one
Yeah, like it's it's probably closer than we think I bet it's I bet it's no I bet it's
50% of switch owners have Mario Kart have Mario yeah
Cuz it's like it's there's so many of them because it isn't the isn't wasn't it 150 million
Consoles was PlayStation 2?
Yeah, that sounds about right.
So if it's 140, it's almost half of Switch owners
have Mario Kart.
As of December, 2024,
yeah, 150 million units of the Switch.
This also, this secondary source says
that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 68 million units as of March. This also, this secondary source says that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
has sold 68 million units as of March 31, 2025.
So maybe that's more current data.
Wow.
That's a lot of games.
But yeah, that's basically one out of every two Switches
has a copy of Mario Kart.
Incredible.
Yep.
I didn't get it because I had it for the Wii U.
Oh.
And I was like, well, I've already played this. So you don't have it on your Switch at all? I don't have it because I had it for the Wii U. Oh. And I was like, well, I've already played this.
So you don't have it on your Switch at all?
I don't have it on my Switch.
Fascinating.
As far as other games that it's kind of like surprised
to see so high in here,
I guess maybe just because of when it came out.
And I think it was also like not priced
as a full price game,
but New Super Mario Brothers U Deluxe,
number 10 selling game on there.
And Luigi's Mansion 3, which I memory hold.
I'd already forgotten about Luigi's Mansion 3,
but that's in the top 15.
A game I didn't finish either.
But then I think the Wii U ports must have done well
because, I mean, Wii U sold poorly.
Yeah.
So people didn't have it, so they missed it.
So then they got a second chance
to play those games on the Switch.
Yeah, as the only person other than Nick
who I knew that had a Wii U,
I was kind of bummed that so many of the titles
were things that I'd already played.
Yeah.
So I was like,
I don't know, I don't know, I don't know.
Oh, the Link's Awakening remake is on here too,
which I had fun with, I don't know, didn't really stick with.
That was my first time playing through League of Awakening
and I really, really enjoyed it.
Yeah.
I liked that art style.
It's a cute, cute game.
Cute.
There was a game that I have to shout out.
Okay.
Because for some reason it's a Switch exclusive,
and I just liked these games growing up.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, The Black Order.
Oh, sure. Just like a team, the Black Order. Oh, sure.
Just like a team, sort of like action RPG type thing
where you can kind of increase the stats of your characters
and you can build a roster of the various Marvel characters.
This is at the height of the MCU,
so it kind of has a lot of characters
from those movies
that are like in the main part of the story of this game.
And I just really, I really enjoyed it.
I got all the DLC for that.
I was very into that game, very, very fun.
Any other thoughts on the Nintendo Switch?
May it rest, you know, may it rest in peace. We hardly knew E of course,
too gone too soon. But honestly, not not gone. Like a decade of any console is a I mean,
it's nine years, but like a nine year time leap between generations is a very significant
amount of time that I hung on. Yeah. Good job, Switch. And because of the hardware refresh of the OLED model,
mine is still in pretty good working condition.
That might be the travel Switch for a while,
because the Switch 2 obviously can travel.
But if I'm not trying to take my brand new thing out in about.
Take the big boy. I'll take it. I'll take it. Well, great my brand new thing out in about take the big boy
I'll take it. I'll take it. Well. I could great now. I gotta get a new big backpack because here's the thing
I have a bunch of bags that fit the regular switch, but this fucking honker is massive
Yes, it is way Matt just handed it to me in the case, and it's heavy in the case
Oh, yeah, and like and for, just to give a size reference for people,
this is like the size of like a half,
like a vertically cut in half Boy's Life magazine.
I didn't think it was that crazy.
And I said it was the length of a pencil.
Pencil, everybody knows,
everybody can visualize a pencil.
Everybody knows what a pencil is.
Yeah.
I wasn't weird at all.
I was being normal actually
Everybody got it you were you were weird
It didn't even occur to me that it was strange until just now
Any anything else I mean I did they had a great time with the Nintendo Switch over the years. I think for me, three consoles stand out to me as like my favorite consoles.
Oh wow. Here we go.
The Game Boy Advance, the PlayStation 2, and the Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch is just an absolute banger, And for something that seemed like it wouldn't work,
people are on rooftops playing it on a table.
They're at a basketball game playing it
while other people are playing basketball.
Didn't seem like that was gonna be enough of a gimmick
to make it a success, but look at us now.
Switch two, baby.
And we get things like the Steam Deck
and the rumored Sony and Microsoft competitors
that seem long overdue.
Please, Sony, give us a fuckin',
like, as if you have designed a compact disc player
in the year 2025, give us a handheld console
that is fragile but well-built,
that has an unnecessary hinge,
that has a light that you're like,
ah, this light is weird.
But give it, here's what I want, Sony.
I want a logo that's incomprehensible
and a light that pulses that they call the heartbeat.
And it should be called the PSP Vita 2.
Yeah.
This reminds me of one of my favorite onion headlines ever.
Sony releases new stupid piece of shit that doesn't fucking work.
Should we do a segment?
Let's do a segment and guys, $15 for you Heather, $15 for you Nick, $15 for you Ranj, $15 for
myself.
It's time for the bargain bin.
Oh wow, I love a bargain bin.
This is the game that Matt invented where he invented
I didn't invent it. He didn't invent it. I saw it from a meme. He seems like fair game
Anybody can do this. Yeah, it's fair. Anyone can do this. He clutched the meme by the throat and dragged it into our show
We each get a certain amount of money and we get a certain
$15. $15. A menu of games. Yeah, and we have we have to spend that amount of money on
On these games and the fun twist of this is
It's the top 20
Nintendo switch games
The highest selling top. Oh wow so in terms of sales here in terms of sales. Yeah, so I'll just go
From five to one in the five dollar tier we have Mario Kart 8 deluxe
From five to one, in the $5 tier, we have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing New Horizons, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild.
In the $4 tier, Super Mario Odyssey.
So this, okay, I just want to get ahead of this.
People who complain about where they are, they think that the quality is supposed to
be where the dollars are.
Mario Odyssey should be in the $5 tier.
Yeah, I'm going by the sales figures.
If you wanted it in the $5 tier00 Yeah, I'm going by the sales figures if you wanted it in the $5.00
You should have bought more copies of it the Metacritic at Mario Odyssey says that it should probably be in the $5.00
Here tell that to the sales where is house of fate of Morgana?
That's actually one of the highest rated games on the switch a game that I just have no I'll never investigate
Yeah, it probably I bet if I played it would be my favorite game
Universally acclaimed I've never even thought about buying it in the in the floor it would be my favorite game. Yeah, absolutely. Universally acclaimed.
I've never even thought about buying it.
In the four, it'd be kind of funny to buy it.
It would be.
In the $4 tier, Super Mario Odyssey,
Pokemon Scarlet Violet, Pokemon Sword and Shield,
and Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom,
in a $3 tier.
You put a lot of W on the sword.
Is that how you say it?
Sword? Sword?
Did I say it that way?
Sword. You know, I just got Invisalign a couple weeks ago a lot of W on the sword. Is that how you say it? Sword? Sword? Did I say it that way? Sword.
You know, I have, I just got Invisalign
a couple weeks ago. Oh, okay.
And my mouth has been moving, like it's been working.
So I do feel like I, I do feel like as a human being,
my mouth moves a little bit differently right now.
Maybe you're over articulating compensate.
Yeah, yeah.
Cause I don't have them in right now.
I know some people do say the W in sword.
Yeah.
I'm drinking, I've been drinking Coke Zero that says partner on it. Love that. So I don't have them in currently
Super Mario Party
Super Mario Brothers you deluxe Nintendo switch sports
Interesting that it's there. That's another game
I forgot yeah, and then Super Mario Brothers wonder in the three dollar tier in the two dollar tier ring fit adventure
This was hard to get we did this episode when we do so it was a while after it had been out
Pokemon let's go
Pikachu and Eevee Pokemon
I think shining pearl and brilliant diamond insane
Insanely titled and in Pokemon Legends Arceus and and in the $1 tier, Luigi's Mansion 3,
Mario Party Superstars,
Splatoon 2, and
Super Mario 3D World and Bowser's Fury.
Guys, can I say something about the box design that I'm noticing? This shit's too busy.
There's a lot of stuff going on. All of these boxes, they got like 100 people on it
and they're all exploding.
Like every one of them, it's like somebody's like racing
or jumping at the camera, throwing some shit
and like, and everything's like,
there's like a firework behind you.
Very few of those games, like look,
Mario Party Superstars is the same design
as Mario 3D World is the same design as Splatoon 2.
Those are all, it's all like a building has collapsed
and these guys are falling towards the earth.
Yeah, they're also maximalists,
so busy with visual information.
It's like, something that's why the Zelda ones
seem to pop a little bit more
because they're just more of a landscape.
I'm gonna say not a take,
but maybe a controversial opinion here.
I did not connect with,
only one of these games gave me
a truly emotional experience.
And as such, most of these games are kind of forgettable for me.
They're dessert to you, kind of.
They're not really the main course.
Yeah.
So if you want, I can go first, because I don't have a lot of like,
there's not a lot of gravity here for me.
Go for it.
From the $5 tier, I'm going to choose Breath of the Wild.
Wow.
From the $4 tier, I'm gonna choose Breath of the Wild. From the $4 tier, I'm gonna choose Mario Odyssey.
From the $3 tier, I'm going to choose a game
I haven't ever played, Nintendo Switch Sports.
Wow.
From the $2 tier, I'm gonna choose Ring Fit Adventure,
and from the $1 tier, I'm gonna choose Mario 3D World.
Matt, as far as allocating our funds here,
are we taking one from each tier,
or can we kind of riff it?
You can riff it if you want.
You don't have to do it one from each tier.
I tend to do that, but if you like to spend your money
however you like, feel free.
Yeah, get three games in that top row
and be done with it, boy.
HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH.
Well, I was thinking about that.
But the thing is, like, even though I enjoyed my time
with Ultimate, it's not something that stuck with me.
I didn't end up playing it.
You know, the Nintendo Online isn't great in their infrastructure,
and it never really stuck with me,
and I think I'm just kind of over the Smash Bros. series at this point.
Animal Crossing, I feel like I have enjoyed my time with,
but I don't necessarily need to return to,
and I'm just not as much of a Mario Kart guy.
So I think of the $5 tier, it's gotta be Breath of the Wild.
I mean, that's just like, you know, and I think I gotta have Mario Odyssey as well, which
is the is $9 and those are both two obvious picks,
both two launch window games that are still maybe the two best games on the system.
And what do I do with my remaining $6?
I think what I do is I get Tears of the Kingdom, the other Zelda game, really sink my teeth
into it.
And then I take my remaining $2, I go down to the one dollar tier, I pick up Luigi Mansion 3 and Mario 3D World
plus Bowser's Fury.
That's pretty good.
It's a pretty good bargain bid.
That's not too bad.
Now look, I'm going Animal Crossing.
I think Animal Crossing to me is the game of the Switch.
Wow, I mean I won't argue with it.
Yeah, I think it's just like, it's the game.
That's just what it is.
Totally fair.
And then, so in the $5 tier, Animal Crossing New Horizons, in the $4 tier, this one's tough,
because it's a choice between two of the great games for this console, and then two sort of mid-Pokemon games.
And I'm going Tears of the Kingdom over Mario
Odyssey which does hurt. It hurts but I need it I need that game in there.
In the three dollar tier I'm going with Super Mario Brothers Wonder. Okay. And in
the two dollar tier, look I have my pick of Pokemon games to choose from or Ring
Fit Adventure. You know I I'm not picking that I
Know you like dark yes
I loved Arceus and I'm so I'm picking Legends Arceus and in the $1 tier my favorite Mario game of all time
Maybe it's in the top maybe five games for me of all time
Holy shit Super Mario 3d world
We should go back and re-rank all our games again. We really should
Yeah, I love to do that Matt
This is kind of, just in this maybe
won't mean anything to people who aren't looking at this,
but you went right down the far right column.
Those are all your picks.
I guess we'll animal, with animal crossing.
Animal crossing's up at the top.
Yeah, different.
Oh, never fucking mind, Jesus Christ.
Edit that out.
No, it was very important to point out even,
if it was true, it would've been very important for the people to hear. I thought I was looking at it, I was like important to point out even if it was true it would have been very important
I thought I was looking at it, I was like this is amazing you went down the one could the
Fucking yeah, I'm just thinking about Bellatro
Man ranch, what would you choose? I would pick Animal Crossing and
then Breath of the Wild
Nintendo Switch Sports Luigi's, and then Mario Party.
Wow.
Wow.
Pretty good.
We all did pretty good here.
I guess so.
Yeah, we sure did.
