Starting point is 00:00:01 This is a HeadGum podcast. Guys, very important episode this week. Very important topic. Talking game collections. Talking game collections. Anthologies, you know, whatever you want to call them. Best of. Best of.
Starting point is 00:00:21 And I think for the show, we should, I've done something, I hope this is an embarrassing, Nick. I've done something to showcase the comedic talents and the wit of one Nicholas Frank Weiger. Wow. And I've compiled a clip compilation. of all of his best jokes from the show. Wow. I am embarrassed, but I'm also touched.
Starting point is 00:00:45 That's so kind. It's some of the funniest shit you've ever heard in your life. It's the best moments from the show. And I just thought that it'd be a fun thing for the listener to get to hear sort of a collection of all these moments back to back to back.
Starting point is 00:00:57 So I say let's not waste any time and get to the best of Nick Weiger. Wow. Guys, that was really nice. We monetize our back catalogs and make old games play on new hardware as we discuss game collections, compilations, anthologies. We discuss that too. This week on Get Played. Welcome to Get Played, your one-stop show for good games, bad games, and every game in between, it's time to get played.
Starting point is 00:02:30 I'm your host, Heather Ann Campbell, along with my fellow host, Nick Tiger Weiger. Oh, that's me, Nick Tiger, Wiger along with our third host, Mr. Games himself, Matt Apodaca. Hello everyone. Hello. Oh. Oh. Oh, everyone. And welcome back to the premier video game podcast where this week we are talking collections.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Yes, I'd say we're all people who have collections in a sense. That's right. We're all collectors. But what if a game itself was a collection? We're talking about anthologies. I just got to stop here. What? Wait, what happened?
Starting point is 00:03:13 I got to stop you, Heather. Why did you like what you said so much? I think because I knew how much it wasted everyone's time. Added absolutely nothing to the show. Yeah, so you see, we are all people that have things in a certain, you know, in a certain niche, and we have a lot of it. But that's different. That's different. That's different.
Starting point is 00:03:38 This is, we're talking about collections. I was actually having a hard time like not doing just like doing like light research and stuff but like figuring out what these things are called because it depends it varies on by the by the item. Yeah if you're doing research for today's episode
Starting point is 00:03:56 and you look up like collection boxes you'll get like display boxes and if you look up like video game anthologies you'll just get like the names of IP so it was a tricky thing to research and again this is This is different than collections that we might have, like, of our grand total of all of our games that we have at home. Yes.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Speaking of which, I saw a heartbreaking, heartbreaking news story this morning about a guy who had the entire NES collection. Every game for the NES. And his house is broken into and the collection was robbed. Oh, no. And he was saving it for his grandkids. He's an older man. and he was going to give it to them so that they could put themselves through college
Starting point is 00:04:43 because he said it was about $50,000 to $100,000 worth of all of the NES games. And the old man was crying on the news and I couldn't handle it. This is going to turn me into the beekeeper. This will not stand and whoever did this, I will find you. The beekeeper's been out long enough
Starting point is 00:05:06 we can loosely spoil the beekeeper. I'm sure. I'm sure I haven't seen it and spoil away. Ranch, we've seen the beekeeper? No. Okay. I got to tell you real quick. You would love the beekeeper.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Okay. I have one note for the beekeeper, which is that one of the boss fights is out of order. I agree. But anyway, but yeah, it's Jason Statham is the beekeeper. And he's a beekeeper. He's a beekeeper. But he also keeps society functioning. Yes.
Starting point is 00:05:32 I mean, he's like, that was his old way of life. Now he's kind of retired, but he has to get back into the game because this, this older woman played by Felicia Rashad who he's friends with he lives with her right he lives on her property he like maintains the bees like on her on her property
Starting point is 00:05:47 she gets she gets scammed she gets fished all her life savings away and then she kills herself oh fuck and so Jason Statham's like I'm going to get revenge on everybody and like literally goes to like an office building and just beats the shit out of everyone
Starting point is 00:06:03 the office building that's so great but the it's like you know these movies have to heighten this movie literally goes to the White House it heightens like a herald they're like literally in the third actor like yeah the fucking president's involved
Starting point is 00:06:19 in the shit now it's crazy it's so funny fucking good yeah it's so fun it's one of those movies I put on you ever put on a movie when you're like sick and you're like I just gotta put something on I'm just relax and I'm sick and then just being like I'm not sick anymore
Starting point is 00:06:35 this movie fucking fixed me I haven't seen the new one yet, but I heard it's just kind of okay. Mutiny. Mutiny, I haven't seen it either. I like that the new one just means another Jason movie. It just another, yeah, these Jason movies, not Vorty's, no.
Starting point is 00:06:53 It's not a sequel to Beekyper. You were like, the new one. No, no, because he's got, he's, he's carved out a lane where you sort of know exactly what you're going to get. And that's all you want. Yeah. That's all you want is to watch. him on a rampage. The janitor.
Starting point is 00:07:09 And it's like, oh, here's a guy who works in a school and one of the kids is killed. And he's got to take up his old ways. I do kind of wish they like, I mean, first of all, I'm seated opening night for the janitor. 100%. Yeah. By the deadline, the janitor just got greenlit. I wish they would, I wish he would take a few more risks. Because like when he does something that's sort of outside of his zone a little bit, I think
Starting point is 00:07:33 he's really good. Like he's so good in the in spy. He's great in spy. He's so funny in spy. I was like, I didn't even know you could be like this. It would be nice to see him doing stuff like that. Like in another world, he was also the Frank Drebin in a naked gun reboot. And he would have been great too.
Starting point is 00:07:54 How about this one? How about this one? It's called toll booth. And it's about a toll booth worker who watches a crime happening in a car as it's driving away. Yeah, I'm in. And so he's got a, he's got a, chase down that person and and they got to pay the toll. Look, that is, that is really good.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Let me just tell you real quick the, the protagonist of the, of mutiny's name. I got it in front of me right here. You got it. Cole Reed. Cole Reed. All his names are like that. Yeah, yeah. And they're just like perfect sort of like action, plain action guide name.
Starting point is 00:08:29 Let me, let me give you the actually have the rundown right here. Sense to Meg 2, The Trench and the Expendables 4 in 20203. The movies he's made sense to enter The Beekeeper, A Working Man, Shelter Mutiny, and The Beekeeper 2 is in production. Fuck yes. His character names in these are in order. Adam Clay, LeVon Cade, Mason, and Cole Reed. Pretty good. He fucking rocked.
Starting point is 00:08:56 He's great. I love Statham. That's great. He's really, really good. movie in 2027 coming out called Jason Jason Statham stole my bike. Oh, yes. I think this is supposed to be like,
Starting point is 00:09:08 like, you know. Oh yeah, this is David Leach. This is the guy who did the, did bullet train, atomic blonde. Yeah, it's going to be fun. Yeah, it's going to be about like a kid who's, a little goofy. Was in crank effectively.
Starting point is 00:09:19 Yes. And Jason Statham had to steal a bike in order to achieve a task. Fun that he seems to be the antagonist of this. That is fun. That'll be fun. We got to talk grilled chicken sandwiches. What?
Starting point is 00:09:31 We have to? Before the podcast started, this got brought up. The thing we always do before we do in our main feed episodes is we decide what we're going to have for dinner and just put that order in. So it'll be, it'll arrive basically, you know, when we take a break between episodes. We time it out. We schedule it. Hope you like the peek behind the curtain because that curtain's going back. If you wanted, you could, so today we're getting cheeseburgers, right?
Starting point is 00:09:59 Yes. Yeah. So if you wanted to simulate what our day was, you could listen to this episode on Wednesday. Yeah? When the DLC comes out. Yeah. So listen to this episode, eat a cheeseburger, and then listen to the second episode, and you will have had like an immersive recording experience.
Starting point is 00:10:18 That's right. And we'll also explain the energy level of the DLC episode. Yeah, yeah, yeah, because we are eating burgers. Yeah. But we were talking about this burger place we order from nearby. Yes. And Matt, you said, I wish they had one more thing in the menu. It's a small little compact menu, just a few items.
Starting point is 00:10:33 Yeah, it's a literal window. Yes. And my addition for the menu would be a grilled chicken sandwich. And like I feel like this is like a staple of some, not every burger place has one, but like I feel like I know burger places like in Southern California that are like smaller chains like like a gyms or something like that or like ricks they have like a uh a you know a grilled chicken sandwich and it's basically just like a piece of grilled like a grilled chicken breast lettuce tomato onion uh bun and like that's it and that to me is like that's like what i ate
Starting point is 00:11:13 like most days after college i loved it and i said and i think maybe this is where nick wants to go with this conversation i said nasty get that shit away from me, put it in the fucking garbage. Yes, and I was just like, one, first of all, I've never been spoken to this way in my life. Second, and I immediately brought up, I went on defense. Defend myself. I think it's a good sandwich. I think it's a viable sandwich.
Starting point is 00:11:43 I haven't gotten Nick's take on this yet. We'll get it in a second. Gross. I immediately brought up like a grilled chicken club. Delicious. Incredible. Heather says that's good. And to me, functionally the same thing with different brands.
Starting point is 00:11:53 No, no, no. The bread's everything, and it's also ratios. Because a grilled chicken sandwich, you've got like just a fucking full breast of chicken. Yeah. And then two pillows of bread. Yeah. Too much fucking shit happening. What you need is thin crunchy toast, crispy lettuce, tomato, a little bit of chicken, bread, little bit of chicken.
Starting point is 00:12:22 tomato, a little bacon, maybe a little cheese, mayonnaise toast. You described, what I can only describe as the biggest sandwich on earth.
Starting point is 00:12:32 That's ridiculous. No, no, no. It's a triangle. You get it cut, because you're talking about like a poolside club. Yeah, yeah, yeah, is what you were specifically talking about.
Starting point is 00:12:41 I was specifically referencing a poolside club I had recently. Thin French fries, a lemonade. It was absolutely heavenly. That's a wonderful day. Yeah, maybe it was on a bun.
Starting point is 00:12:49 I would have also, I would have liked it exactly the same. If you were, were like to promise me that sandwich and then deliver the first one, like a cat on TikTok, I would just hit your head over and over and over again. Here's what sways me to Heather's side. And I'm not trying to yuck my friend Matt's yum. Just in terms of my own personal preferences.
Starting point is 00:13:12 My ears are ringing like a grenade went off. I'm just rarely ordering the grilled chicken sandwich. Sure. I am, if there's a grilled chicken sandwich, there's probably a fried chicken sandwich. and I just will get the fried chicken for the texture. But I think the texture comes across better with the toasted bread that you get with a typical club sandwich. And the other thing I will say is, like, that mitigates the kind of, you know, gooey sort of quality that can sometimes be with the chicken breast. The other thing is club sandwiches are cut into triangles and those are fun.
Starting point is 00:13:45 And that goes a long way for me. Triangles are fun shaped to eat for sure. I can't dispute that at all. I can't. I could try. but I won't and I'll fail if I tried. I just like the crunch to chicken ratio on a toasted club sandwich versus what feels like I'm drowning in a swamp bite of a plain grilled chicken on dough bread.
Starting point is 00:14:08 And I do like a spicy. I like a grilled, like a fried chicken sandwich. I like that. But I'm trying not to have so much fried chicken right now, even though I love it. The health case is in dispute. I get what you're saying. You're saving some calories. I'm this way with fish tacos now, too.
Starting point is 00:14:26 Like, I kind of like a grilled fish taco over a fried taco any day. Love a grilled fish taco if it's a good quality fish. It's huge. And also grilled chicken taco over like a fried chicken taco. Yeah, absolutely. Yes. Here's what I'll say about your request for an addition of a grilled chicken sandwich to this modest menu they have over there. I would rather have like a filet of fish sandwich.
Starting point is 00:14:49 I really have a crispy fist sandwich. I'll allow it. Yeah, that's fine. I don't like that. So I don't want that. But they could have it. They could have it. Just wouldn't order it.
Starting point is 00:15:01 Wait. I'd be where I am right now still without having my fucking way. What? Do you prefer the filet fish or the BK big fish? We don't have time for this. I got a really good fried fish sandwich one time with my old. boss, my old boss, Colin Anderson, he sent me a photo. He's English fellow.
Starting point is 00:15:27 He goes, thinking about getting a cheeky fried fish sandwich for lunch in Knitbrough. His words. Uh-huh. And I was like, all right, I'll go with you too. I felt so bad after I ate the sandwich because it was like, it was delicious. It was so good. But it was like a, it had like a Nashville hot. Fuck.
Starting point is 00:15:45 To the batter too. So it was just like spicy. And it was so, it was a delicious sandwich. but I felt like absolute hell after. Ruined. Onion rings and fried fish both make me feel sick but are great when you're eating them. Oh, I love onion rings too, yeah. The BK Big Fish is strictly better than the filet of fish for McDonald's.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Okay. However, however, the Arby's fish sandwich, when they've had it, I would take over both. The issue is I don't have nostalgia for those sandwiches in the way that I do for the filet of fish. So that's always a factor working in its favor. So it's a difficult question to answer, but I do think. think the BK. Big Fish is superior. All right. What do we got to do to get Arby's back in the, in the lexicon?
Starting point is 00:16:25 How do we fix it? It's up to us. Arbys is still around. This is an L.A. problem. Yeah. This is we pushed, we've pushed it all the way to Englewood out there with SoFi Stadium. And just like it's, we need that, we need that Arby's back in the heart of Hollywood. You couldn't keep a historic Arby's location open with a historic Arby's sign.
Starting point is 00:16:46 Big fucking 40 foot signs. Big as shit. 40 foot hat. Made out of neon, and they couldn't keep that open, because people just don't want to eat that fucking roast beer. I forgot that it's by SoFi, and I don't go there very often, but I feel like next time I'm going to Sofi, I will go to Arby's. Hit up Arby's, hit up Randy's donuts.
Starting point is 00:17:04 They're right next to each other. Oh, fuck. I have the best day of my goddamn life. Because I can almost guarantee that those two options are going to be better than anything inside the stadium. Can you imagine if they, like, bulldoze the Randy's donut, like huge donut, and just put like a fucking sweet green there? They'd be taking me with it because I'd be fucking chained to the donut. They're not doing that to me.
Starting point is 00:17:26 And I did this to myself. Yeah. But I ruined Arby's for myself doing sketch comedy. Of course you did. I didn't know the story. I just know exactly how it went down. Yeah. We got 100 Arby's sandwiches and we took all the beef and put it into a Home Depot buckets.
Starting point is 00:17:47 And the sketch was a commercial where I, Arby's announced meat only. It was me and Jeff Sloniker on stage sitting with our legs wrapped around Home Depot buckets filled to the brim with loose Arby's meat, just eating a handfuls of it while Hal did the spokesman bit. Yeah, yeah. And it ruined my life. I can picture it so vividly.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Like, it's like, I mean, it's, like, I mean, it's a good chance that I saw it. But I just, because I'm just so familiar with everybody involved, I can fully visualize it. It's tough. Hal you mentioned how the great Hal Rudnick. How about that? Oh, nice. That's fun. Hi, Hal Rudnick.
Starting point is 00:18:38 What's up, Hal? Rens you like Arby's? I don't know if I've actually had Arby. Oh, we got to go to Inglewood. We should get it for dinner. Road trip to Inglewood. Oh, yeah, we can just, yeah, we'll order it from the Englewood one. It will come ice cold
Starting point is 00:18:50 A good chance it'd actually never come We can talk about some video games Arb for RC I like that You know Arby's stands for roast beef It does not It does Don't listen to him he's wrong
Starting point is 00:19:06 Arby's it's written as A RBY Aposter v S The popular urban legend Is that it stands for R B R B like roast beef Right. But it does not. It stands for Raffle Brothers, who are the founders.
Starting point is 00:19:20 What? So it does stand for R.B., but it's not R.B.? But it's not roast beef. Two Raffel Brothers, an unrelated RB who just managed to specialize in roast beef. That's so much worse and weirder. I agree, but it's the truth. Heather, you better sit down. We got something to tell you about Wetzel.

The link is in the podcast episode description box. We're talking about some video games. The question for the room that I'm going to ask on this video game podcast is, What are you playing? What are you playing? Hi, it's me the resident evil merchant, and I'm here.
Starting point is 00:25:39 That's your favorite question in a week. Which is what you're playing. Matt al-Badaka. what are you playing? Wow, right into it. Right into it. And also, what a read. That was really good.
Starting point is 00:25:52 Thank you very much. I've been working on my voice. Yeah, I can tell. I don't know if you know if you know this is, if you don't speak with the right part of your throat, you can ruin your vocal cords. I actually do know a lot about this because my wife is a speech pathologist. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:09 I actually know way more about this than you would think. Well, maybe I should see here because... You should probably see here. Actually, stay away from my wife. Don't ever look at her. Well, I did see a doctor, you know, casual checkup, and he went, oh, oh, my God. No bedside manner? That's tough.
Starting point is 00:26:28 Yeah, that's tough. And so I was going in for Lil's Beach pathology, but I didn't get a, I didn't get a fair shake. No, you know what? Then I will, I'll put you in contact with my wife. She can still set you straight. I bet you have, I bet you have nodules. Oh, yeah. Nuddles.
Starting point is 00:26:46 Yeah. What's that? There's like, just like little, little things on your throat. Yeah. Throat ballop? Yeah. I wouldn't be shocked if that's not the only thing in there. What?
Starting point is 00:26:57 What do you think there's like a little guy in there? It's not a little guy. Probably like gunk in detritus of some kind, I would assume. Seweed. Maybe seaweed. Yeah, you don't seem, no offense. You don't seem like necessarily the most hygienic person. I gargle.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Well, that's good. Yeah, you're not supposed to gargle like. concrete. All right, all right. Look, I know that I'm off-putting, but I can go with salt water. And that's actually good for you. That is good for you. Yeah, straight, L.A. River is salt water.
Starting point is 00:27:27 I know, yeah. So that's not salt water. Definitely not. Yeah, it's probably mostly pissed. It is salty. I don't know. I just made an assumption. At least get it from the ocean, not the river.
Starting point is 00:27:40 Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't even do that. The ocean. Yeah, but at least it's salty. At least it's salty. I promise you the L.A. River is salty. I, no, I believe you. That's the problem. Salty and thick like melted velvita?
Starting point is 00:27:56 Oh, God. Put me off Velveeta. Put me onto it, weirdly. I do like that Arby's cheese sauce they put on it. Arby's so fucking good. I had never had it until I was an adult. Yeah, it's so good. I think I was 26 the first time I had Arby's.
Starting point is 00:28:14 In Long Beach, where we're both from, there used to be an Arby's slash Green Burrito, which was, like, such a unique combination of chain restaurants. What's a good one? Green Burrito is now owned by Carl's Jr. Hardee's, and it was, but it used to be its own freestanding, like, a Mexican concept. Kind of like, I'd say like maybe just like a half tier above Taco Bell in terms of quality. Yeah. But none, you could do, you could do pretty good for yourself over at a green burrito, I feel like. Where is I put it above or below Del Taco? Well, it depends on what you think del Taco and Taco Bell are in the same tier.
Starting point is 00:28:48 Yeah, I think they are in the same tier. I prefer Del Taco for years. Del Taco is really declined and inarguably Taco Bell is just better now. You want to know a fun way to eat Taco Bell? Yeah, go for it. Do you get those little tacos or soft taco? Yeah. He grab it by the bottom and squeeze it in your mouth like a toothache.
Starting point is 00:29:10 It's a fun way to eat Taco Bell. straight into your throat that's jammed with salt water. Yeah, I guess if you did it a normal way, I would think that's strange. Right. You know what I mean? Like, so the fact that the way you told me was odd, I shouldn't be so shocked by. I don't have time for tortillas. Man up, but don't know, but don't have time for tortillas.
Starting point is 00:29:33 It's all I got time for, baby. I weirdly understood that completely. I'm still playing Kingdom Hearts 3, and I think I had a bit of a revelation while I was playing it last year. Because I think I'm somewhere about, I'm taking a really long time because I've honestly, I've noticed that I'll like pause the game and like go do other stuff
Starting point is 00:29:55 while it's on. Yeah. And then like come back and be like, oh yeah, I was playing this. Like, and then get back to it. Not to say that I'm finding the gameplay unenjoyable because I do think that that is like the, that's what's propelling me forward is that the gameplay is just like pretty good. Right. It doesn't quite feel like Kingdom Hearts 2
Starting point is 00:30:13 I mean I start thinking about what is it that I like about Kingdom Hearts 2 in the first place and then you know just unpack it a little bit further I'm thinking okay it comes out I'm 15 years old it hits it's hitting me at the exact right time to leave an indelible mark on
Starting point is 00:30:30 my soul anything that I liked when I was 15 years old is like stuff that I'm gonna like maybe like forever like it just it you know here I am sitting you know I have a Pokemon tattoo I still love Weezer and Blinkway too and stuff, and I love Kingdom Hearts too. Yeah, I mean, that's why I have that tattoo of a hoop and a stick and the other one of Scott Joplin.
Starting point is 00:30:55 You're getting that back piece, too, of the train. Yeah. The train coming from your back. Which honestly, would actually be a pretty cool tattoo. Yeah, pretty cool that there. So I'm playing this, and I just. I'm sort of like, what is rubbing me? Like, what is, like, what am I having friction with in this game?
Starting point is 00:31:18 And I put this in the chat, and Weiger points out something that I think I've known to be true for a while. I think I just have to accept. Okay. Because I also, I utter, I uttered this refrain. I think Kingdom Hearts 2 is for cool teenagers. Yeah. And Kingdom Hearts 3 is for babies. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:40 And it feels like in terms of, like, and I'm sure this stuff is in Kingdom Hearts 2 also. And I'm just like kind of maybe, you know, selective memory or whatever of like the, you know, just the dialogue being a little like it's all like very like so like a kid can understand it. King Heart's three feels like it's cocoa melon to me or something. Weiger pointed out maybe I'm just getting a little old. I disagree. I disagree with Wyger's sake. I think Kingdom Hearts 2 has better flow. and I think part of what makes it have better flow
Starting point is 00:32:12 is Final Fantasy characters being in the game. That's interesting, yeah. And I think Kingdom Hearts 3 saying, you know what, there's enough lore here, we can let go of the Final Fantasy characters, meant that you spend an enormous amount of time just with straight Disney guys. And what was compelling about Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2
Starting point is 00:32:34 is you would see cloud or you would see squall or Sephiroth interacting with Donald Duck. Yes. And even if the dialogue was just like, you know, whoa, he looks really bad. You would cut to Sephiroth and it would be like, why are these two characters in the same room? Yes. Whereas with Kingdom Arts 3, they're not reacting to any sort of external stimuli. No. And I also, I think I pointed this out to last week, too, where like, I just didn't really grow up with the Disney worlds that they're covering. Like, I like Monsters Inc. I like Toy Story. I don't care about Frozen or Tangled or, I liked Beard. I watched Big Hero Six like last year. I'd never seen it before. Good movie. It's actually really good. So maybe when I get to that level, I actually be pretty excited about it. But the rest of it, I'm kind of just like, I kind of wish it was spending a little more time with like,
Starting point is 00:33:36 Luxio or whoever the fuck from the Kingdom Hearts characters Right Just to clarify My remark about like You know When you're talking about it being for babies And you're saying maybe you're just getting a little bit older
Starting point is 00:33:47 I don't think you put it as harsh And saying maybe you're getting old No I didn't take it as harsh I took it as You know I took it in stride because look My back hurts All my shit's fucking falling apart
Starting point is 00:33:59 I mean I thought it was mean The way he worded it Yeah he said you're the fucking Oldest piece of shit on earth You're older than me even he said Long pause and then just time to buy a grave. That said, I would strangle a man of the cloth to be your age again. A priest?
Starting point is 00:34:17 That's what it took. Here's the thing. Where I'm at right now, I'm in a good spot. 35 is a good age. It's a good age. That's like where you want to lock in. If I could lock in at 35, I would just coast it. Because like I have like a, like a, and you know, I've had the benefit of seeing people I know become 40.
Starting point is 00:34:35 and up. And so now I sort of like, I know it's ahead of me and I sort of like know what the, like what the trajectory is kind of. Because like you see your parents getting to that age
Starting point is 00:34:44 or whatever. You're kind of just like, I've always thought my parents were old. And my mom is like not old at all. No. But like you get now like I feel like the gap is closing as we as we get older. Like we're sort of like closer in age than we were when I was a little kid.
Starting point is 00:35:03 You know what I mean? But all that to say. Oh, wait, just, it's just my point. Yes. Like, what I was referring to was the Disney biomes. Yes. That's what I meant to. Like, like, like, the quality of Kingdom Arch 3 versus 2 I cannot speak to.
Starting point is 00:35:15 Yeah. Having not played it. I just, this is not a franchise I'm super familiar with. But I do know that the consensus among fans and among critics is that three is not as good as two. And I think that's probably. I don't give a shit about Hercules, but I was happy to see Hercules in two. Yeah. You know, I don't give a shit about Hercules.
Starting point is 00:35:31 He puts the glad and gladiator. I don't, I don't give a shit about. That's pretty good. I don't, I don't, there, I don't give a shit about fucking snow white. Yeah. You know, or Sleeping Beauty or any of the,
Starting point is 00:35:46 like, but I specifically don't like tangled. Yeah, there's something about it doesn't feel. Right. What's wrong with tangled? I haven't seen it. Like I,
Starting point is 00:35:56 I, I will say Mandy Moore does the voice in the game, and she's fucking good in the game. She's really good in the game. Yeah. You know, I'm so excited about Coco World. Coco's gonna be great. Because I do care about Coco.
Starting point is 00:36:10 I like Coco. We care about Coco. I think the problem with three also is that toy story aside, it's like... Even the Toy Story World's kind of like not that good. They spend a little bit of time in Andy's room and then they go to a mall. I know. And I'm just kind of like, this is not even really like... I'd rather go to like Pizza Planet or some shit.
Starting point is 00:36:30 You know, anything like that. Or make it the store from Toy Story 2. You know, it's not even that... Ow's Toy Barn? Yeah, it's not even Al's Toy Barn. No threat of owl looming. Yeah. Or make it the place where the stuffed animal guy.
Starting point is 00:36:45 Lato? Lato. Yeah. I think Toy Story 4 wasn't even out yet when... Oh, well. Kingdom Hearts 3 came out. I think. Jesus Christ.
Starting point is 00:36:52 Really crazy that there's been two toy stories since Kingdom Hearts 3. About to be a third? Yeah, maybe. Wait. No, Toy Story 5 just came out. Oh, okay, yeah. Toy Story 5 was fucking great. Wait.
Starting point is 00:37:03 No, isn't there... three is the one with lotso because four's the one yeah yeah four is the four is forky yeah forky yeah forky is four so I'm sure it was out um I don't know all this all that to say I'm still playing it and um as soon as because I I've been putting I just finished the Monsters Inc level uh and I do think it's funny that they have to transform
Starting point is 00:37:27 that they have to look like the area sometimes it's not a change at all like I don't think they changed really for tangled because they're just kind of like, this is probably fine. Yep. But in, they're like, no one's going to get fucking freaked out. Who's going to see us? But in the Monsters Inc.
Starting point is 00:37:41 World, everyone is monsters. So they have to, like, look like monster. Right. Kind of fun. Yeah. Well, that's specifically a plot point in Monsters Inc is that humans and children are deadly. You can't touch them. Oh, that is true.
Starting point is 00:37:53 So they had to really be like, I don't know what the rule is on ducks and walking and talking dogs. Yeah, because when Boo is loose, they're fucking losing it in the sushi bar. And we do see Boo in the game. Boo is there. And the plight of boo makes me really sad, actually, to think about. She never sees those guys again. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:38:11 It's tough to think about. That's growing up. And that's what I'm doing. And that's what I've been playing. I like it. King of Heart Street. Heather, what are you playing? Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:38:25 I gave myself a bit of a fortnight. What do you call it when you, like, totally commit? A binge? Yeah, I gave myself a Fortnite binge this weekend. A vendor? I think I played upwards of 12 hours, nonstop. Wow. With my friend Miguel, shout out to Miguel.
Starting point is 00:38:50 New season, Twitter, across the board, too fucking hard is what everyone's saying. Whoa. So fucking hard. Everybody is miserable. It's like you roped in people with sprites, all these casual players, and then you drop them into a fucking war. It took us a while to figure out how to play it. And it is a incremental strategy military sim now.
Starting point is 00:39:18 It is not. It is about position. It is about height. It is about distance. It is about callouts. It is not the fortnight of last season where you'd fuck around, drive a car through a gas station, blow shit up. Like, who cares?
Starting point is 00:39:31 This is like inching, inching forward. like you're on the front lines in World War II. It is hard. Wow. And after we had played that way for enough hours, we were like, shit, this is just the way that that we used to play in ranked. Let's just play in ranked. And ranked is identical to casual.
Starting point is 00:39:51 Like in terms of like the actual oppression on the battlefield. Yeah. It is a hard season. Really interesting choice by the devs considering. Well, there's only like five people left at Epic, so who knows. What of a choice it was. But considering that they put in all these video game characters for it to be such an aggressively difficult season is a surprise. Is Sora in it yet?
Starting point is 00:40:17 Not yet. Okay. I'll tell you. Okay. So I play in that. I continue to play near automata. Wow. Game fucking rules.
Starting point is 00:40:25 It is so interesting. I cannot stress enough how ugly it is. It is shockingly ugly. But it feels like there were games in the PS2 like Godhand where the game didn't necessarily look incredible. It felt like you took a building and cookie cuttered it around and that would be your environment because it was so focused on like the actual mechanics of combat. That's what Neer feels like. I'm really enjoying it. Also, the story is enticing. I like robots who beg you not to kill them.
Starting point is 00:40:59 There's a lot of that in Neer. A lot of like little mechanical guys being like, help, please no, don't kill me. Like that, great. But my additional game that I've picked up this week is that the four of us are going to a Krono Trigger concert in October. Yeah. So I have started Krono Trigger again. Hell yeah. Whoa.
Starting point is 00:41:21 It has become my nighttime game, my 30 minutes before bedtime game, starting from the beginning. I haven't ever beaten Chrono Trigger I would really like to be able to beat it before late October or whenever that concert is. Were you playing on DS? I'm playing it on the Einthor. Okay, but are you playing the DS version?
Starting point is 00:41:42 No, I'm not. I'm playing the original Famicom version. Wow, okay. Mostly because I don't like the DS version. We've talked about this. Yeah. I don't like the font. The font bothers me a lot.
Starting point is 00:41:53 That's fair. I wonder if there's a... A mod to find the DS version with the good font. Could be. Could be. Could be. But thoroughly enjoying it. It's nice.
Starting point is 00:42:06 Einthor has got a gorgeous screen. It's really great. Having a good time. Those are my three games. Nick, what do you play? Heather, thank you so much for asking. You're welcome, Nick. So here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:42:18 Last week we had on a new friend, Russ Nickle. A lot of fun. A lot of fun. A blast. Talked about their new game, Ledger Bound. And I did spend some appreciable time with Ledgerbound, which they were kind enough to provide us with culture. Wow, I love it.
Starting point is 00:42:32 But first, I want to talk about another game that Russ mentioned, which is an auto battler called the bazaar. Now, we talked about the bazaar. I looked into the bazaar, and the bazaar seemed extremely like my shit. Kind of like run-based game that, you know, I could just replay endlessly,
Starting point is 00:42:48 and there was a lot of positive buzz about it. However, the more I looked into it, the monetization scared me away. So this game is $20 for the base game. It comes with three characters. Maybe that'll be enough for, you know, my purposes. But each additional character individually is $20. $20 per character.
Starting point is 00:43:09 And apparently to get the whole roster, it's $140 all in. So that's quite a commitment for, you know, I understand that devs are trying to figure out how to stay in, you know, stay afloat financially. And it's, I get that everyone's attempting different systems of monetization. But I don't know. I was just like so I saw the future of me getting into this game and then me being frustrated that I'm spending $20 a pop on each character. And I just bounced off of it in advance. Wow. I did find a review on the Steam store that I think kind of like typifies a lot of the fan response to this game.
Starting point is 00:43:51 This is not recommended. I'll read the review in its entirety. While this game is fun, I'm done with $20 updates. with $20 updates. I'm already $100 into this game and no end in sight. What do you think the number of hours this person has into this game was without going over? Prices or right rules. They've spent $100?
Starting point is 00:44:12 $100. Less than two hours. Less than two hours. I'm thinking differently on this. Okay. There's no way to me it's sub a hundred hours. Okay. So I'm going to say, gosh, maybe I'm going to go.
Starting point is 00:44:30 I'm going to go crazy. I'm going to say 200 hours. Okay. Rochelle, how many hours do you think this negative reviewer has put into the bizarre? 90. Matt is going to take it. 959 hours on record. Jesus Christ.
Starting point is 00:44:49 I think at that point, 900 hours into something and you spent kind of only $100, I think you're getting out pretty good. You maybe got in your money's worth. So maybe this one, Ush, honestly, might be perceived. persuading me back towards it. But no, I get too much other shit to play it. It kind of sounds like this person, I see a thumbs down, not recommended. Kind of sounds like you recommend it.
Starting point is 00:45:10 900 hours. Good Lord. That person, I think, just really did not want to crest 1,000 hours with this game they were mad at. And they were just like, fuck it, I just need to cut it off at this point. Yeah, maybe they are just like, it's, that's the limit. Yeah, I have to move on sort of mentality. God bless.
Starting point is 00:45:27 How much of a life is that? 960 hours Out of your life? In days. Please don't calculate this because I know how many hours I've played a fortnight. I don't want to know. Okay, I want to do. What is it?
Starting point is 00:45:38 Tell us. It's 40 days. Huh. Well, wow. Huh. I don't think I could do that. Like, if you were to take that amount of time and say every day for 40 days, you're going to play this one thing for 40 days, I don't think I could do it.
Starting point is 00:45:57 And really when you consider that. that you're not awake for eight hours in the day. No. So your reality, let's say that you play 12 hours a day, which is aggressive, that's 80 days. Yeah, 100%. Yeah. That's an aggressive.
Starting point is 00:46:13 I wouldn't be able to do it. You can go around the world. I was actually talking about this very thing the other day. I was like, I don't think 80 days is enough to see the whole thing. I think you need a little bit more time. They were doing it a little too fast. Well, they're trying to race, right? They're racing.
Starting point is 00:46:27 The whole thing. It's too much. I think you could, I think, take your time, see some sights, you know. I'm realizing I've never, I messed around with the game a little bit, but I've never seen any adaptation or read the source for around the world in 80 days. I've seen the, is it Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan? Okay, yeah, that sounds right. I've seen that. And I, is that what it is?
Starting point is 00:46:56 Is Jackie Chan not in it? Jackie Chan's... That sounds right. In... In Shanghai noon and Shanghai Nights. I've seen both those movies. There was a time where Jackie Chan was untouchable. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:08 Where he just... Pair him with a different comedy-adjacent guy. You got a hit. But I played the... I played the... One of my very first games that I remember playing was around the world in eight days, actually.
Starting point is 00:47:22 Wow. Wait, which version? I'm not 100% sure, but this was a head to... have been like the early 90s probably like 1995 or something. So whatever version was either contemporary or probably a little bit older at that point. But I remember that playing a round the world any day's game and I liked it a lot. It's a Jules Verne novel that was originally serialized.
Starting point is 00:47:47 Heather, I know you like first editions. Look at the first edition this motherfucker. Oh, so beautiful. That is a beautiful award cover. Yeah. But yes, the premise of it is, I guess, it's like a wager to see if you can get around. the world in 80 days for I guess whatever the
Starting point is 00:48:01 fucking currency is, 20,000 of those. I don't remember what the name of the movie is, but there's a movie that stars... Tron. That's Tron. It's Tron. It's Tron. I was going to say it stars Tron. He's in it. There's a movie that stars
Starting point is 00:48:17 Jennifer Lopez, and she's gifted a first edition copy of The Odyssey. Oh, yes, yeah, yeah. She's like, oh my God, it's a first edition. And it's like, that book would be thousands of years old. And not in English. Also, they weren't publishing books back then. They weren't making books.
Starting point is 00:48:34 Very funny. I'm really enjoying ledger bound. It's the writing is high quality, as you might expect. And the narrative is compelling with a lot of forward momentum. Like, it's not like marking time. It's just like it's moving. The art direction is really appealing to me. It is quite horny.
Starting point is 00:48:53 Like, it's not date everything horny, but still. Horny horny. Like you're like it's it's it. You definitely see it with both the character designs and the dialogue. Yeah. And obviously and there's a dating sim quality to it. So yeah, basically with the, with the game, actually, I probably recap for people who maybe didn't hear last week's
Starting point is 00:49:08 episode. You are a, you're, you work for an insurance company. Your job is to, you're basically tasked with denying as many insurance claims as possible. And the way that is accomplished gameplay mechanics wise is through tactical RPG, combat and then social and dating Sims and time management. The insurance adjuster framing for the tactical gameplay is cleverly implemented because it will be things like, hey, these heroes got killed and their grieving family wants the
Starting point is 00:49:41 payout for their hero insurance, but your job is to show how it was a skill issue on their part and they had a way to survive that combat. So this isn't actually a thing that we're on the hook for. Basically, you're proving that they're at fault for their own deaths, which is really grim and grisly, but that's what insurance adjusting is. And, you know, as a comment on capitalism, it's effective. But it also, like, basically what you're doing is then you're playing through combats trying to prove that. And then as it progresses, things change up a little bit. But I also really like that this is a thing that's retained from, you know, that's an Atlas RPGs as well.
Starting point is 00:50:20 And it's very common in dating sims. But I love time management stuff. I love when I have this budget of time and I can spend it with this individual, this individual or whatever, or my hat rack or whatever. And, you know, because I like making those choices and I like focusing on what relationships you're going to advance. Anyway, there's also like a just tonally, I think it's really on point. There's a good Yula joke up top for a game that's so much about bureaucracy, just like an endlessly scrolling. Yula that's got like just packed with a bunch of jokes and fake shit. I think it's I think it's really well done.
Starting point is 00:50:58 And I think if you like this sort of game and you haven't checked it out already based off of last week's episode, yeah, worth a, worth a gander. Hell yeah, I've downloaded it. I can't wait to get in there. So what's going on. Yeah, get in there. Love to hear it. Oh, and this game is very not forever.
Starting point is 00:51:14 I can say that much. Okay, great. But I think you'd like it. Ranch, you've been playing cyberpunk 2077. I have. What was the impetus for this? I bought it a long time ago when I first started working on the podcast. You guys were talking about it?
Starting point is 00:51:30 Yeah. And there was a conversation recently that made me want to pick it up. Okay. It was you guys, obviously. So you remember something, but it was not memorable. It sounds exactly like us. It's probably like this. Cyberpunk 2077.
Starting point is 00:51:55 Baby back ribs. How are you enjoying it so far? I like it so far. I was extremely overwhelmed with like the scanning. Like there are a lot of components to this game that I haven't really seen in other games that I've played. So I was extremely overwhelmed by also the open world aspect of it. When you say scanning, do you mean like the kind of detective aspect? of working through a brain dance when you're in that virtual reality thing?
Starting point is 00:52:22 Yeah, the brain dance, like, really confused me. And then there was, like, a camera. Or you can, like, hack the camera and stuff like that, yeah, yeah, yeah. And I would just, like, this is too much. I, like, can't even handle the people who are shooting me right now. But I ended up changing the difficulty to, like, the easiest mode. So now I could just stand in front of someone, and they'll be shooting me, and basically nothing happened.
Starting point is 00:52:49 But I'm really enjoying the story. And I finally got to the Keanu Roos part yesterday. Hell yes. Are you playing a Corpo, a street kid, a nomad? What's your, do you remember? Street kid. Street kid. Okay.
Starting point is 00:53:02 Nice. And what kind of build are you going towards? Are you using guns? Are you doing more of a hacker thing? That's a thing where I feel like I need some advice. Because anything that's in the inventory or in any of the menu stuff, I don't really look at. Okay, okay. It's going to be an almost like a Luddite build.
Starting point is 00:53:25 I'm not doing any of that stuff. Yeah, just a person with a gun in cyberpunk. This is going around shoot regular. I'm not doing it. It's whatever's in my hand. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, Heather played a kind of a genocidal hacker build, which I think you would be attracted to, right? And like, do you want to talk through what that character was at all?
Starting point is 00:53:48 My favorite thing to do was there's a hack pretty late in the game where you can hack somebody's brain and force them to kill themselves. And it was so funny to me to go like to jump as high as I could because I added jumping. So I jump like double jump into the air and then go into like hacker mode. So everything slows down. And I would just ping as many people as I could see do the hack. and then I would land and everybody would pull out a gun and shoot themselves. It was so, so fun. I think they've nerfed that move, though, in the subsequent like revamps of the game.
Starting point is 00:54:31 So I don't know if that you can do that sort of thing as aggressively because I think people were exploiting it like I was. I have a more important question, which is, did you go with a male or female V? and if you went male, is it large, small, or off? I went with female. And I made it look like myself. Hell yeah. It's a game that, like, I'm sitting here and I'm thinking about it. It's a game that I think about wanting to play again a lot.
Starting point is 00:55:04 I did buy it for the Switch 2 at launch because I thought it was funny that the full thing was on the cartridge. Yep. And I think if I was like, if I was to re-revised my top 10, it might be in there. It's a good game. I fucking, I love it. It's a good game. I really loved it.
Starting point is 00:55:22 I mean, especially love the Phantom Liberty and the, you know, rebalancing the skill tree and everything, complete revamping of the skill tree that came around then. Yeah. It's still a little, there's still a little bit of jank in things like the driving, but the vehicle physics. but it's it's so much more of a complete package than it was at launch, which was when it was such a total mess. The story's been great the whole time. The build, I will say Rancho, the first time I played through it,
Starting point is 00:55:50 I did more of like a straight ahead kind of kind of just guns combat build, and that was pretty brainless, but totally satisfying. And again, that wasn't the only focus of it. The second time I played through it, I did a katana build, and I had more fun with that because it's just sort of like, you know, it's just fun to do. charge up and fuck people up with a sword. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:10 It's also very cyberpunk. But I would say, wait, did you watch Edge Runners, cyberpunk Edge Runners? I'd be curious your thoughts on that. That might be fun actually to watch as you're playing the game. So good. Because it's a parallel story.
Starting point is 00:56:21 Edge Runners too coming to whatever release, Amazon. I don't know where those things are released. Netflix. I think in just a couple months, maybe only one month. And Cyberpunk Edge Runners are coming to Fortnite. Wow.
Starting point is 00:56:35 So you can play as Lucy or, David. Wow. Hell yeah. Can't wait. I love CyberPuck. I'm really happy you're playing it, Rand. Yeah, me too, Ranch.
Starting point is 00:56:44 We like that game. Are you playing it on, you're playing it on PC? PC. Okay, great. Yeah, yeah. It's fantastic. It is a shame that you're not playing it at launch and are not driving down the street when cars spawn in the air and fall to the ground.
Starting point is 00:56:58 And cause you damage. Yeah. Hi, I'm Beck Bennett. I thought I was Beck Bennett. No, no, no, no. I'm Kyle Mooney. Sorry about that. No, all good.

Starting point is 00:58:26 Anyway, so check out Squarespace.com slash headgum for a free trial. And when you're ready to launch, use offer code headgum to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain. Hell, sounds easy. Anybody could do it. Like I said earlier, we're all collected. He loves it. We have our own collections.
Starting point is 00:58:50 Why is he doing it again? He loves this stuff. But some games are themselves collections. So that's what we're talking about. With the newspeg of Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, Volume 2 out now. This is the one that has Metal Gear Solid 4 guns of the Patriots. The first time off of the PS4 is my understanding. Yes, which feels extremely important to me for some reason.
Starting point is 00:59:12 I mean, because here's the deal. I own a copy of this game for the PlayStation 3 in a collection. I own the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection for the PlayStation 3. I do too. Have I ever once put in? I did play... I said PlayStation 4. I meant PlayStation 3.
Starting point is 00:59:35 I played the second one. Metal Gear Solid 2? Yes. I can't remember. What's the fucking subtitle? It's killing me. Sons of Liberty? Sons of Liberty.
Starting point is 00:59:49 I played that version of it for the show when we did it. I played the on the disc. I played that. But I have not ever put in the Guns of the Patriots disc ever in my PlayStation 3. My PlayStation 3 currently not hooked up. So this new package of it being available elsewhere. Yes. An instant buy for me.
Starting point is 01:00:13 I'm so excited to get it. I got the first collection on Switch. Right. And so I'm thinking about... Being the second collection on Switch? On Switch 2, yeah. Being able to play Metal Gear Solid 4 on a Switch feels very novel to me.
Starting point is 01:00:28 Yeah. So I think that's the choice that I've made. It was such a hefty release. It shouldered so much burden on the PS3. Yeah. It was really an incredible tech demo. And then also had the, like, he smokes for a long time while the game is loading
Starting point is 01:00:47 or installing. And that was like, hey, we're in a new generation. Games did not have to install like this on the PS2. And you're going to have to spend some time with old snake while he smokes a cigarette. Yeah. I don't know if I'm ready to dip in because I'm trying so hard to stay focused on near.
Starting point is 01:01:11 but it has held up a big beacon for me. I mean, I'm not going to play it right now. I am getting. There's a difference between getting and playing. Okay. I'm going to get it. Getting is part of being a collector. Yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 01:01:25 You add to your collection. That's something, I'm a bit of a collector myself. The question I have for the group is, what is the first game that you remember an awareness of a collection? The first thing that's coming to mind to me. is Final Fantasy 1 and 2 Don of Souls for the Game Boy Advance. Wow.
Starting point is 01:01:45 So I have that on my list as well, but my answer is earlier. Yeah. Which is, I think the first one where I remember consciously clocking, like this is a collection because it's so forefronted,
Starting point is 01:01:57 is Super Mario All-Stars. Same. Same. For Super Nintendo, which was not just a, not just a compilation of Super Mario Brothers 1, 2, and 3, and then the Lost Levels,
Starting point is 01:02:07 aka Japanese Super Mario Bros. too, released in the U.S. for the first time. But they also had a, they also had an S-N-E-S aesthetic. Yeah. And an S-N-E-S sound font setting for all the music, which broke my heart. Yeah. So I love those original chip tunes. Me too.
Starting point is 01:02:29 Yeah. But it is kind of cool to see everything remastered because there was such an appreciable escalation and, you know, in horsepower going from 8-bit to 16-bit. Yeah. That was the first one I remember. But I also, for me, a lot of them were, I think there's so much of being a PC thing. Because in the 90s, they had all these big box PC collections. And so one that I had pretty early on was LucasArts Classic Adventures, which is a five-game LucasArts compilation of a maniac mansion, which we covered on the old format, Zach McCrack and Alien Mindbenders, Indiana Jones in the Last Crusade.
Starting point is 01:03:08 and Loom and then The Secret of Monkey Island, one of my favorite games all the time. So, and they did a bunch of those LucasArts collections. I feel like they did like four of them, four or five of them. And they were, they all just like, in addition to being cool packages, they were in cool packages because we talked about physical media recently.
Starting point is 01:03:29 Ranch, I don't know if we can bring up some of these, some of this box art I compiled. But like the LucasArts Archives, for instance, which came a little bit later, and that one included Star Wars Rebel Assault, Day of the Tenicle, which was a Manchin too, Indiana Jones of the fate of Atlantis, which is its own standalone story. Also, the fate of Atlantis is like a better story than like dial of destiny. It's like, I know that's a low bar, but it's like San Max hit the road.
Starting point is 01:03:52 I just kind of don't see how that's fully possible. It doesn't, that one doesn't sound like it has Indiana Jones going to the past and wanting to stay there to die with Socrates. It was Archimedes. Archimedes. My wife and I were, because I was an Indiana Jones fan when I was a kid. And our very, our second date was she brought me to see Indiana Jones in a theater. Wow.
Starting point is 01:04:20 But when Dial of Destiny came out, I was like, we got to go, we got to go. And she's like, okay. And so we got to the theater. And she got sick. And we had to leave. Yeah. So we were only about five, ten minutes into the screening. I've still never seen Dial of Destiny
Starting point is 01:04:39 She can skip that one She did you a massive favor Okay okay It is not good Okay So here so there's the There's one of the Lucas Arts archives I was just was talking about
Starting point is 01:04:48 Ranch had it just just up the This one like look at how cool that is And then and all these things They would fold the fuck open So you had like a really Kind of cool folder of a bunch of games Wait what am I looking at So I'm looking at a box that looks like it's
Starting point is 01:05:00 An Archaeological site Yes it's where you're digging through sand to reveal Shown discs underneath the sand. Right, correct. Yeah, and that was the presentation of it. It looks nasty to me. It looks nasty?
Starting point is 01:05:14 It looks like it's like a bunch of games stuck in melted cheese. I really can't take Heather's word for what's nasty anymore because she said that, and I quote, grilled chicken sandwich is nasty. Throw it away. I hate Matt. I didn't say I hate Matt. She said that. I stand by everything else. She said that.
Starting point is 01:05:31 I stand by everything else on the side. Do not hate Matt. But this box looks like it looks like. It looks like melted goop. And also kind of a face. It gives me weird vibe. All right. Well, that wasn't the point of me showing the box.
Starting point is 01:05:44 Why don't you show this guy? Again, I don't want to yuck your yom. I'm just giving my opinion on it, which is you should be ashamed. I think it looks cool. Thanks, Matt. Oh, look at that. So we have this interplay. If we go back to the other direction, with this interplay 10-year anthology, this is
Starting point is 01:06:00 kind of one of the totemic ones. Look at that. And look at these fucking games you're getting in here. I mean, it's just like you got a nice. another world in there. You got wasteland. I think there was, I think, yeah, battle chess is in there. So it's like, you're, you know, getting 10 games, the barge tale, which I think was the first PC RPG ever played with my brother. And then we keep going through these, some of these other ones. I'm going to point out also on the front of that box. There's a sticker, you know, one of those
Starting point is 01:06:25 fake stickers that were put on old boxes like, oh, we got this information last minute. So we have to like put it on the box. And it says, worth buying a CD-ROM drive for. CD-ROM today. June 1994. How's CD-ROM today doing in 2026? They still kicking around? I get a print edition of it. Let's keep going. We can look at a few more of these ones.
Starting point is 01:06:47 Look, I just always love these gold boxed dragons, Dungeons and Dragons box art. Look at this high fantasy art here. This is the one that I have beholder. This is the one I was most familiar with because of the I have the Beholder series. But like, look at that. Look at these fucking skeletons. Yeah. That's really fucking good.
Starting point is 01:07:02 So what is, are these collections? a way to drain just a little bit more money from people because you're offering three games for the price of one. Or is this a way to introduce people to a series that they otherwise may not have access to? Or is a little bit of both? A little from column A, a little from column B. But I think fundamentally it's in the publisher's interest
Starting point is 01:07:28 to monetize their back catalog. And one way you can do it is by having these attractive packages of game compilations. We can just scroll through these real quick. There's a collection two. Look how many fucking games you're getting in that one. That one's crazy. And then...
Starting point is 01:07:42 Good Lord. This is the corny edition. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight games? Yeah. Those are all the forgotten realms ones. Wow. And then we have collection three. I never actually had this one,
Starting point is 01:07:54 Dungeon Hack and Menzo Baranzen. But we can keep going and see a few more. The ultimate collection, this is ten games. And this is a really cool-looking box. Yeah, very classy looking. Yeah. Back when Origin was a publisher before they were absorbed and then eliminated by EA, Taylor's oldest time.
Starting point is 01:08:12 Great. We have a, oh yeah, this one, the Wing Commander Kilrathy saga. So this one was actually kind of a, this was kind of a Super Mario All-Stars in a sense because they did upgrade some of these games as like at least Wing Commander 1 and Wing Commander 2. Wing Commander 3 is, have we ever talked about Wing Commander 3 on here? No. But just looking at this box art, I was just about to ask, what is Wing Commander about,
Starting point is 01:08:38 actually? Because I had no idea that it got into outer space and with like creatures. Wing Commander was kind of crazy in that it was, or it was a pretty seismic at the time, because it had, it was space combat, but interspersed with like really like dramatic cinematics. And they started, they came out with voice packs for them because they didn't have voices initially. And then they later, when they're on CD-ROM, they, they were fully voice. Wing Commander 3 in particular. Oh, yeah. So the bad guys are the kill Rathie who are like basically a Japanese catman, I guess, for like a better description. But they are, they're like an evil force. It's a very clear good and evil thing. There's no like
Starting point is 01:09:18 moral ambiguity in it whatsoever. But like there can be perma death. You can fail missions. Wow. You can go down a bad path. You can like bad path where you fucking lose the war and you're gradually seeing the ways in which you're, you know, your own personal failure is starting to erode the mission at large, the war at large. Anyway, Wing Commander 3, those cinematics went from being animated to being live action, and it stars Mark Hamill. It's really, it's really a fucking crazy time capsule of 90s PC gaming. Correct my memory, because I think I might have this a little bit off.
Starting point is 01:09:54 Was there not a Wing Commander movie? There was a Wing Commander movie, and it's one of the worst movies I've ever seen in theater. With Freddie Prince Jr. and Matthew Lillard, right? so fucking bad. Does it not adapt? Because like to me that movie was like we have Top Gun at home. Like that or that's like sort of like what the vibe of that movie was in my mind. But I didn't know, do they do do they go to space in that one? Do they go to space? Do they do they go to space? I mean like like you. You can just look at it and like this this. It just look at actually the game Wing Commander 3 looks better than the movie. But I think we have to watch the movie for the show. Chris Roberts. No, thank you. Who was the creator of Wing Commander ends up directing the movie. I think we've talked about this in in in. In. In. In. I think we have to watch. In. In. In. In. In. In. Oh, ends up directing the movie. I think we've talked about this in the context of the Super Mario Brothers movie of the 90s, where they got like these two, you know,
Starting point is 01:10:39 a tour directors who'd made Max Headroom and who knew nothing about Mario to make this really singular, really fucking weird, like, you know, city of lost children, the thing with incredible production design, but it bears no resemblance to the Mario IP. Yeah. a direction, we're like, well, let's just get the director of the games to direct the
Starting point is 01:11:02 movie. And it turned out he did not know how to direct a movie. Because it is just ineptly made. Of course, Chris Roberts landed on his feet and now has a star citizen. So, like, literally like the fucking billion dollar fucking Kickstarter or whatever the fuck. Crazy. Anyway, but all this
Starting point is 01:11:18 was said, we talked about physical media on a recent episode, and for me, a big part of the collection appeal was, like, they were just really cool, like, physical compilations. Yeah. With just a whole bunch stuff in the box, oftentimes a lot of physical bonuses, and then just really appealing box art on its own. That's the thing about these collections that I actually do really like.
Starting point is 01:11:39 Because to Heather's point, it is a way for them to get a little bit more money, but it's a great, it's an incredible value proposition for the consumer. Because you're getting sometimes minimum two games for the price of one, that's already a pretty good deal. You start getting any more than that. You're like, are you sure? This is so many. This is great.
Starting point is 01:12:04 I'm thinking of one in particular. I feel like the PlayStation 3 was like the era for this for console gaming. There were a lot of these like from PlayStation 2 or bringing the PlayStation 2 games to the PlayStation 3. Well, also that was the era of the Orange Box. Yes. Which was like one of the big showcasing people would be like, oh, I'm going to get the orange box and really you were getting it for portal right yeah the orange box an interesting case so probably the best value in gaming of all time i mean but but it was like those games were
Starting point is 01:12:39 arriving on on consoles for the first time via the orange box so it's like yeah it's i guess that i guess that does fit the criteria it was just like a little different because those games were basically contemporaneous like they're basically just just out at the same time i the thing that i think is just crazy is that like I mean there's just so many of them and I had quite a few of these because like I didn't have the backwards
Starting point is 01:13:04 compatible PS3 so all my favorite games on PS2 were stuck there and I was like well there's a there's a Jack and Daxter trilogy collection and it's all of these ones have been
Starting point is 01:13:18 like remastered or you know remastered for HD at least which is like they could have just put them on like they didn't have to actually do anything actually. But they often have at least some form of remastering, which is really cool. The Ratchet and clank one, the
Starting point is 01:13:34 Jack and Daxter, Prince of Persia, the Sly Cooper trilogy. The one that I think is actually the craziest is the god of war saga, because they have a few different god of war ones, but the god of war saga is five games. Wow. And it's all of them. It's
Starting point is 01:13:50 God of War one, two and three, and the two PSP games. And the first two are on one disc, And then the third one is its own disc because it's huge. But then the PSP games download code, which is tough. That's a bummer. So, like, if you bought that now, you can't do anything. You actually couldn't redeem that code.
Starting point is 01:14:09 Yeah. I don't think the storefront is available. I want to talk to you guys about a very strange compilation, which was maybe this won't follow your rules, Nick. We're making the rules. We're just talking. Yeah, Mr. Rules. Well, there is the only place that you can play, the sequel to Out of This World, which was called Heart of the Alien, is on Sega CD.
Starting point is 01:14:36 And it came as a box set, compilation disc with the original Out of This World. So it was Out of This World Parts 1 and 2, released as a compilation, as like an anthology. Wild and, like, because Out of this World has come out so many more times. as, you know, remastered, high-deaf graphics, anniversary editions, et cetera. It is insane to me that still the only place that has ever had an official release of the sequel is Sega CD. That is wild. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:15:10 I'm surprised that no, that they have not found another way to get that under a different platform. Yeah. Going back to Orange Box real quick, just because I was trying to remember it. So Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 were already out. So it's basically like those two are like kind of a compilation, but kind of like in the anthology package. But it also included new games in Half Life Episode 2 was coming out. Half Life 2 episode 2 rather was coming out for the first time. Portal was coming out for the first time.
Starting point is 01:15:39 You're correct. And then Team Fortress 2, which I had forgotten about, which was a huge multiplayer game. And so, yeah, you're essentially getting three brand new games and then two like absolute bangers of very recent games. Like it was that he come out a couple of years ago in one package for the price of a retail game. They don't make them like they used to. Becoming that guy. You're wearing like a construction helmet? I saw the, I saw a rep screening of the apartment.
Starting point is 01:16:10 A guy did, you know, fantastic film Jack Lemon, an all-timer. But I saw that in a theater. And when the credits hit, a guy, there literally was an old guy going, they don't make them like that anymore. I was like, man, I can't wait to age into that. You could have heard me say that after the end of my screening
Starting point is 01:16:30 of the 25th anniversary of the Fast in the Fury. I literally said to my wife, see now that's a fucking movie. You contrast that pretty directly with what must be the most viral clip of watching a movie, of Star Wars watching a movie,
Starting point is 01:16:47 and it's a rise of the Skywalker, a rise of Skywalker clip. and it's the end of the movie. It's Ray saying, you know, what's your name? And she goes, Ray. And then she sees Luke and Leah in the distance. Audibly in the theater, you hear somebody go, no. No.
Starting point is 01:17:08 And then she says, Skywalker. And people go, no, boo! And somebody screams at the top of their lungs. I hate Star Wars as another person visibly gets us. and starts leaving the theater. It's incredible. So, such an unearned moment in a fucking, just a wretched film. I also think somebody shouts solo.
Starting point is 01:17:32 Like it should be, it should be Ray Solo. Yeah. That'd be a little more interesting. I'd still be confused. Yeah. But I'd be intrigued. Yeah. At the very least.
Starting point is 01:17:43 But also, you know, we don't have to get into it. I actually am pretty surprised. It hasn't come up on the show in a while. It's been a while. We did Star Wars Month on the page. and I think it got us out of it on our system for a little bit. Yeah. Just who was building the Star Destroyers and Exigal?
Starting point is 01:18:00 You can't just like hand wave that away. There was a massive shipbuilding apparatus. I could sort of buy. Sith cultists. Sith cultists slash failed Palpatine Snoke clone. Right? A army of Snokes just like building stuff. It is an enormous military operation in a series that in a previous movie had also pointed out, hey, this is a military industrial complex problem.
Starting point is 01:18:33 Right. Yeah. Where you have these manufacturers working for both sides of the war. Yeah, Benito del Toro. Yeah, kidding out, kidding out the good guys and the bad guys. And Rogue One, which also kind of like draws some broad strokes. about the military apparatus of these things, to suddenly have a fleet of Star Destroyers is pretty incredible.
Starting point is 01:18:57 Do you know how long it takes the U.S. Navy to build an aircraft carrier? I would assume like years. 12 years. Insane. And they just have like a thousand Star Destroyers out of nowhere. More Star Destroyers they've ever seen on screen it at once in any of the movies. We're not making one at a time. Make them all simultaneously.
Starting point is 01:19:16 We've got a couple different things going on. There's a couple of irons in the fire. I was just about to say real quick while we're on it. Kind of a little disappointed that Benicio is like one and done. I would like to have seen his character a little bit more, I think. Well, let me point out the comic book series. Oh, okay. You can follow Benicio del Toro's character for, I think, a three-issue limited series.
Starting point is 01:19:34 That's cool. Look, where's his Andor? I'd watch his Andor. We're going to give somebody a Disney course series. Let's go! I mean, I just, look, more stuff you put Benicio in, the happier I am. I love this guy. I had memory-hold some of this, and I'm just remembering it now as I'm, as I'm
Starting point is 01:19:49 looking through the Wing Commander 3, Heart of the Tiger, like that. Hey, that's good. That's right up your rally, dog. But Mark Hamill is the star as a hero. Malcolm McDowell is in it as well. And then John Rees Davies of Lord of the Rings and Indiana Jones. And then Tom Wilson, who is Biff from Back to the Future. Wow.
Starting point is 01:20:11 Is a Todd Maniac Marshall. Wow. He's good. I love him. He's great. I always love seeing him. We could maybe just watch a. string out of all the Wing Commander three
Starting point is 01:20:22 cutscenes for DLC. That might be fun. Hey, that's a new format. You just created something. Cutscene theater. Wow, I like it. We could watch all the cutscenes from a game
Starting point is 01:20:33 and do it. That's good stuff. Feels like I'm just eating straight cilantro. You have the cilantro gene? No, I don't. You just don't like it. I just can't imagine just eating handfuls of cilantro. But do you care about it on food either way?
Starting point is 01:20:49 No, I don't know. Yeah. Kind of tastes like shit no matter what. You don't want to spend two hours of your life living in this aesthetic. Oh, God. Jesus Christ. I was convinced one of those was like a tur. Nick just showed us, I think, still from a cutscene of Wing Commander.
Starting point is 01:21:05 Yes. And it does look like everybody's made out of paste. Yeah. But if we're going to say yes to this format, I'm going to bring in a Sega CD cutscene compilation. Yeah. You guys are going to have to sit through that shit. Yeah, that's fine. I love it.
Starting point is 01:21:19 Look. Jesus. I'm all in. Okay. Please, sir, can I have another? Give me a lot. I'll take a lot of you got. All right.
Starting point is 01:21:24 Great. Can I talk about a failed anthology? Please. Final Fantasy anthology for the PlayStation 1. Oh, God, yes. Combined Final Fantasy 5 and 6 and maybe one, two. I don't know, actually. They did a couple of them, and I'll just look it up, but keep talking.
Starting point is 01:21:44 Well, the problem with this release was that even though they added, to the game, like, you know, brand new, fully rendered, like, cutscenes and released Final Fantasy 3 U.S. as six proper, which was nice. There were loading times built into what used to be a seamless 16-bit experience. Oh. Every time you went to battle, it would be like, you know, the screen would go, and then you'd hear, zz, no, no, no. No, yeah.
Starting point is 01:22:16 As it would load the battle, which was devastating. for the pace of the game. And widely, even though, you know, you have these brand new gorgeous cutscenes, it was like derided in the industry because it was like, you've made these games worse by updating them. Yes. The same thing. I mean, there was also a chrono trigger port to the PlayStation 1 and it had the same
Starting point is 01:22:41 sort of issue with just like that game does not have random combats in the same sense of, you know, you see enemies on screen, but it's still just like added load times to something that not previously have load times, but added some animated cinematics as well. The Final Fantasy Anthology I looked up, there were two different versions of it. One was four and five and five, and six. That's weird. Yeah, it is all weird. Do you want four? Or do you want six? You're getting five, no matter what you want. Why don't they give you all three? Give me four, five and six. No, couldn't fit it on one day. You're getting five? You could have four or six, That's final.
Starting point is 01:23:18 Or you could have five twice. Did any of you guys play, let's see, Uncharted the Nathan Drake collection? So I have this. And like I... The answer wasn't, yes, I haven't played it. It's just I have it. I think I've played the first like three or four hours
Starting point is 01:23:38 of the first Uncharted like a dozen times. And it's like a game that I know that if I just like got past, nothing is even rubbing me the wrong way. I, on paper, should love these games. And I do enjoy those opening hours of those games quite a bit, but I for some reason cannot ever bring myself to finish the first uncharted. I can't do it. That was actually a thing I talked about in the podcast,
Starting point is 01:24:05 is I was playing through them in the pandemic and played through three for the first time. But, I mean, two is fucking great. Two is an absolute banger. One, I had fun seeing it all the way to the end, but, you know, yeah, it does lose momentum a little bit. Maybe that's a, maybe I just watch the cutscenes and then, then jump into two, because everyone says two is incredible. But everybody says four is great, too, and I'd love to play four.
Starting point is 01:24:33 But the, oh, I wanted to say this about these, about collections. Because I feel like there's a lot of them popping up right now. We've talked about some on the show, the Mortal Kombat one, the Atari 50. Those types of collections. There's a lot of these ones. I got the, there's the Marvel versus Capcom
Starting point is 01:24:53 fighting champions or whatever it's called collection and it has like all the Marvel Capcom games and Marvel versus Capcom 2 in particular. I think the best thing about these types of collections is that one,
Starting point is 01:25:06 they're preserving, they're actively preserving the games. You can play them on modern hardware and making them available to new audiences, and people who miss the games. And then two, there's like, they're including stuff. I bought that collection because I wanted it's,
Starting point is 01:25:21 I wanted to play Marvel versus Capcom two on my Switch. Yeah. That's why I got it. Yeah. But it's interesting that I could boot up a game I had never played or heard of, the Super Nintendo of the Punisher. And it's interesting that that stuff's there. No, 100%.
Starting point is 01:25:35 Just from an archival standpoint. It's great that it's available. Matt, I want to return to something that you mentioned earlier that I didn't really get a chance to touch on, but Final Fantasy, one and two Dawn of Souls, which came out for the Game Boy Advance. Now, I played the shit, the, the shit out of Final Fantasy One on the NES when I was a kid. This was your introduction to Final Fantasy One. Yeah, I had never played him before. My true introduction to Final Fantasy,
Starting point is 01:26:00 of course, was Kingdom Hearts. Right. But when they, I remember never seeing the, and then my uncle playing. Who are these guys? I think the first Final Fantasy I remember seeing is Final Fantasy Eight. Okay. Because I have vivid memories of my uncle playing, like, with Squall. Nice. I remember, I know, so, like, when I saw Squall in Kingdom Hearts, I was, I knew who Squall was.
Starting point is 01:26:25 Oh, it's that guy. But I didn't know, and I was like, why are they, they're calling him Lehan? But they, I didn't know, I didn't know Cloud and I didn't know Sephora or any of the other characters. But Dawn of Souls, I remember getting because I think of, uh, electronic gaming monthly's influence. and then I was just interested in it. And I was like, I've never really played a game like this before.
Starting point is 01:26:49 I want to see what's going on here. And I became obsessed with both of those games and played them both like back to back like a lot. Like I would just like run through one, go straight into two, go back into one and just played them nonstop. I loved them. That's a good, two like two pretty meaty JRPs
Starting point is 01:27:09 on the Game Boy Advance. That's a good value. You're getting a lot of game. out of that. And these were remade, remastered, like they were, you know, they had upgraded visuals and sound. I mean, and also they significantly nerfed the difficulty of Final Fantasy 1, which was a big thing. A game that was, it could be punishingly hard at times, you know, in the OG version now was kind of a breeze to get through. But still, I was like, when I, when I replayed them on Game Boy Advance, I was like, well, replayed Final Fantasy 1, Final
Starting point is 01:27:40 Fantasy 2 as my introduction to because that one was never localized. I think that may have been the first time it was available in English officially. I was like, this is, this is, this holds up. Like this plays pretty well. They're really, really fun. Yeah, there's a lot of random combat, obviously. That's the big thing that makes it chug. But still, it's, it's, and also unique among the Final Fantasies, or I shouldn't say
Starting point is 01:28:06 unique among the Final Fantasies, but this was in the era when it was not, like they are now where like, hey, we have a, we have a bunch of, you know, a named protagonist and a bunch of player characters that are like, you know, connected by a linear narrative. There you were just like creating, you know, fighter, uh, black mage, you know, red mage or whatever the fuck. I would just name them after like my friends. It'd be like me and like my brother and then my other brother and then like maybe a friend. That's cute.
Starting point is 01:28:35 Or my mom or something. You only got four characters. Yeah, you only got four. Four characters in a party, but also four characters. for a name. Yeah, so it'd be like Matt,
Starting point is 01:28:43 Joe, Dave, Mom. Mom was your healer? Yeah, she would heal her? I guess that's fitting. Yeah,
Starting point is 01:28:53 well, or the Black Mage other way, works for her. But I had never played, but also, so I got,
Starting point is 01:29:03 I had that, but then I also dipped into the most recent collection of these same games, the Final Fantasy pixel remaster, which tough,
Starting point is 01:29:15 tough stuff because it's one, I'm sort of really, honestly, I'm willing to forgive certain things for convenience, I think, for the sake of, like the idea of preservation, they're preserving the wrong thing, though.
Starting point is 01:29:30 It's like when that person did the, the touch-ups on that one painting of Jesus and it made it look bad. I don't understand how a company known as like the showcase, of aesthetics in gaming. Yeah. Like if you want to see something pretty,
Starting point is 01:29:44 you look at a Final Fantasy game, right? Like, they're gorgeous games. They have such high fidelity. The rebirth and re- remake and rebirth. Are staggeringly gorgeous games with great costume design. Yeah, Final Fantasy 16 is so good.
Starting point is 01:30:02 Evocative character art. The same company would be like, you know what, this looks good when it comes to the pixel remaster. I think it's an overcorrection. It's like a, it's sort of like, you know how people were mad that the Star Fox characters looked too real? Yeah. But like, I think the original intent was for them to like look like that.
Starting point is 01:30:26 And it's just like it's, the visuals have caught up with modern fidelity. So I think that the, the, what they've done to the fonts in these games and just a lot of the art in general in these pixel remasters, they're making. They're sort of like, this is what we wanted it to look like. This is how it's supposed to look. And it's like actually, it looked better when it was a little bit bad, kind of. It looks shitty though. Like, none of those characters look good. No.
Starting point is 01:30:51 And their fonts are atrocious. I think the only one of those I played through in that collection was three because I only played three on the DS in, you know, in 3D graphics. I never played it. Original style? Never played it flat. You know, it's a fun party to roll through Final Fantasy one? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:31:09 Four fighters. Four fighters, you can get a lot done. Yeah. You can make short work of some of those guys with four fighters. I want to talk about... Nick? Rand. Penn.
Starting point is 01:31:23 I want to talk about street fighter compilations. Okay. Which have a long history of enormous box set releases. The first was in 1997, the original Street Fighter collection was released for both Sega Saturn and PlayStation with Saturn. and of course being a Sprite powerhouse. And so it was very welcome. Sounds like my fridge on the weekends. Got to suck that bad boy up.
Starting point is 01:31:52 It's hard to work on a gaming podcast where the name and word Sprite has to come up. You mentioned it earlier and we didn't even do anything. I know you didn't. And I was like thinking, man, maybe I'll do something, but you can't just toss out Sprite powerhouse. Sounds like my house in the weekends.
Starting point is 01:32:07 So it's featured Super Street Fighter 2, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and Alpha 2 gold. So three fighting games for one disc back in the Sega Saturn PlayStation era. But that doesn't hold a candle to, I think compilation all three of us have, which is the Street Fighter 30th anniversary collection. This is an incredible collection. This is 12 games. Now, a lot of them are iterations, but those iterations are specific enough that they feel like different games or have different characters in them. You got Street Fighter, Street Fighter 2, the World Warrior, Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition,
Starting point is 01:32:44 hyperfighting, new challengers, and the tournament battle, as well as Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Then you got Street Fighter Alpha, Alpha 2, Alpha 3, Street Fighter 3, the new generation, second impact, and third strike, all in one box. That's, I mean, yeah, to your point, they're all kind of, you know, the same to some degree. But that's what I liked about the Mortal Kombat one is that like all the ports were available, even though if they were the same, even if they were the same game. I just think it's good. That's good for everybody that all versions of the thing are available. No, it's fun.
Starting point is 01:33:24 It's good preservation. I mean, that makes feelings that package as a whole, especially at that price point. But I did love how comprehensive it was. Heather, I don't know if you ever messed with Sonic Jam, but that was one I saw in my research. This was a Saturn. Yeah, the Saturn compilation of... I still own my copy of Sonic Jam. Wow.
Starting point is 01:33:41 How was that? Not good. What I remember was Blizzard classic arcade. Matt, I don't know, as a Game Boy Advance, I don't remember we ever messed around with this. It sounds familiar to me. But this was Blizzard before, you know, basically before Warcraft changed the fate of the company. They had these games of Blackthorn, which was like a platformer with a guy with a gun. Lost Vikings was kind of a puzzle game and then rock and roll racing, which I never messed around with.
Starting point is 01:34:06 but I know it's reputation. Lost Vikings, there are three different Vikings that each with their own ability and you'd use them to maneuver through platform puzzles. I'm mistaken. Sonic Jam is not the title
Starting point is 01:34:15 I was thinking of. Sonic Jam for the Sega Saturn fucking ruled. Okay, great. It was really good. It wasn't, each of those games was rebuilt so that it was running natively on Saturn.
Starting point is 01:34:27 Yeah. So it wasn't a like emulated title. It was like a Sonic 2 running on Saturn. It was good. Got it. Yeah. My bad. They also updated Blizzard Arcade.
Starting point is 01:34:38 Blizzard Classic Arcade is Blizzard Arcade Collection, which added RPM racing, the ancestor to rock and roll racing and lost Vikings too. So I don't know. That was like, I think, I think, very often these are just available for free, which I kind of like that they're just like, yeah, this is how the company started. Look, we used to make like little smaller games like this, and now we have this empire.
Starting point is 01:35:00 What the fuck? This game is $300 now? I'm sorry. I looked up Sonic Jam. God damn it. fucking retro games. What a nightmare. Speaking of expensive collections, and this one will not exceed the price point you just stated, but Metroid Prime trilogy for the Wii, which became a very scarce game.
Starting point is 01:35:19 And it was the first three Prime games, and then they updated there with Wii controls. It consistently goes around $125 on eBay open and $250 sealed. So it was, it's such an Nintendo thing to just like, we're just not going to make enough of these, and we're not going to make it digitally available and good luck. Yeah, and we're going to remaster the first one, put out a fourth one, and then just never talk about two and three ever again.
Starting point is 01:35:47 I don't want to emulate these Nintendo. Do not force my hand. I want to give you money. I want to shout out the Metal Gear Solid Master Collections, the ones that are coming out, and then the one, you know, volume one. Because I think the things that you get in these collections are interesting. Just from a, from a preservation standpoint.
Starting point is 01:36:13 Because you get, of course, Metal Gear Solid 1, the VR mission, special missions, and integral versions. You get Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3. But you also get Metal Gear, the MSX2 version. You get Metal Gear 2, Solid Snake. and you get the NES version of Metal Gear. You get Snakes Revenge as well. And you get like a digital comic of one and two screenplay and like just digital books and stuff.
Starting point is 01:36:44 And that's like that's a lot of I think important value for just like historical record. I love it when these compilations have commercials on them. I love it when they've got like archival like when it feels like walking into the Nintendo Museum as much as it does that you get to play the games. Yeah. But that's my favorite kind of compilation. And so there's like stuff like that in this new one too. And of course we are either getting Metal Gear Solid 4, Guns of the Patriots,
Starting point is 01:37:14 finally off of PlayStation 3. But we're also getting Peace Walker, which was for the PSP originally. And Metal Gear Ghost Babel. Ghost Babel? Ghost Babel. Metal Gear Ghost Babel. I believe it's Ghost Babel. Babel?
Starting point is 01:37:30 Yeah. Babel? Bay Bell. I don't know. Like the cheese? Babel like the Tower of. Oh, Babel. Yeah, this was a Game Boy Color game.
Starting point is 01:37:38 Yeah, for the Game Boy Color. Yeah, kind of cool. I just think it's good that they, I only thought it was Peace Walker and Guns of the Patriots until I was looking into it today. I was like, hey, there's a third game in there. Yeah. Yeah, no, it's kind of nice to toss that one in there.
Starting point is 01:37:52 Yeah, why not? Do you want to guess what IGN gave Metal Gear, the Ghost Babel, upon release? Is their score of 10? Yes. Hmm. 10 out of 10. 10 out of 10.
Starting point is 01:38:06 Really? 100%. That's crazy. Wow. I got to play this thing. Yeah, it played on the compilation. Because they give, well, they give good game sevens. They must have really liked this one.
Starting point is 01:38:18 And you also love complicated timelines, I know from your fandom of Kingdom Hearts. It's my number one favorite thing. This one takes place three years after the event of Metal Gear Two Solid Snake, not Metal Gear Solid. That actually just fucked me. Two recent collections, I want to shout out was the Castlevania Anniversary Collection of 2019 and the Castlevania Advance Collection of 2021. Oh, yes. Because those Game Boy Advance, Castlevania games in particular, were just such great, you know, Metro, I mean, Metroidvania is.
Starting point is 01:38:51 That's where half of the fucking Portmanteau. And it also included Dracula X. I'd be so curious to know what the sales are. on things like this because to me, every company should be doing this. Yeah. It would just make so much sense for like Pokemon to be like, here's the original, here's even like the Canto collection. And then here's the Joto collection.
Starting point is 01:39:17 And they could sell every version in two. It's almost like what you want is each of these publishers to put out a year disc. Yes. So it's like Nintendo 1985. and it's like all the stuff that Nintendo is a first party made in 1985. Like Atari, 1980. Like, if your shelf could just be, you know what, I'm going to play 1999 today. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:39:45 And you pull out, like, that publisher's disc. That would be awesome. That's what I love about. I mean, I don't have any of these, but, like, when you see, like, a collection of marble comics and, like, a big omnibus. Yeah. Like, that to me is, like, so, like, that's also a similar thing to me. I'm like, it's good that they're putting these out there for enthusiasts, but also maybe people discovering it, you know, for the first time.
Starting point is 01:40:05 I think it's a net benefit to society. I like a box set of Star Wars movies. Yeah, why not? Yeah. I also think as a tour theory is increasingly embraced in video games, we're going to see more things like this. From 1986, they had a Sierra released the Roberta Williams anthology, which was like every Roberta Williams game. And it's like 15 fucking games, including every single King's Quest. and it's yeah
Starting point is 01:40:28 I think or is Fentasmagoria Oh Fendizmigoria is not included So that one's missing But it is just like that that sort of comprehensive Like treating a You know treating Kojima like Stanley Kubrick Would be cool if someone
Starting point is 01:40:42 When Because right now like There's such obvious Unknown bad blood between Konami and Kojima Right Yes The moment that He's trying to tell us about it in his games
Starting point is 01:40:54 Yeah The moment that that man passes away. They are going to, Konami's going to milk his legacy so much. There's going to be Hideo Kojima collections that Konami puts out. It's going to be crazy. Yeah,
Starting point is 01:41:07 I mean, Mark my words. That's assuming that Konami, you know, isn't acquired by a larger studio some kind and then shuttered within a year after purchase. Fair. This is also assuming that a Kojima dies.
Starting point is 01:41:20 Yeah, that he's capable of death, which I'm not convinced of. His 63rd birthday was this week in, Happy Birthday King. Happy Birthday King. And he talks a lot recently about like the things that he wants to do versus the time he has to do it. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:41:33 And like how that streamlines and changes his endpoints. I'd say let me get a crack at a couple of these ideas. I think give me just one and then I'll see what I can do with it. Boktai 2. Give me Boktai 2. Sorry, Boktai 3. Yeah, give me Boktai 3. There you go.
Starting point is 01:41:51 I'll do, man, I would actually do a pretty good job with Boktai 3. More like Matt App, Bach, Tyga. Barely. Barely worth saying. I wish that burger made you sleepier. Well, now you spoiled that we already eat dinner. It's plain that coy. Yeah, we took a break mid-episode to eat burgers.
Starting point is 01:42:15 When we said earlier, we're going to have the burgers after the episode. The burgers came early. It came too early. Listen, it came too early. What, did you want us to eat cold burgers, you sick fucks? No, we had to eat them when they were hot. You have to eat. You want us to force-feed ourselves ice-cold burgers.
Starting point is 01:42:28 You make me sick that you want us to do that. Ranch is upset. I did send you guys, and I'm just going to shout it out, I did send you guys a good TikTok about burgers. That was a good burger shit-tick-tac-ta-da. Yeah, yeah, it was, so it was a burger. It was like a, what I could describe as like a sort of squish toy of a burger. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:42:50 And then one-to-one, basically, another burger. Right, with real bread. With real bread, the bread is open to reveal something that you would never guess in a million years would be enclosed the burger bun. It was the tail of a seal. And then the seal is all the way out. And then the seal then goes, A real seal. I didn't know what was going to happen at the beginning of that.
Starting point is 01:43:15 I was just like, I was like, what is this double burger video I'm being algorithmed? I'm watching it. I'm like, where this is going so far. And the reveal of the seal was so funny that I laughed out loud at my phone, which I rarely do. How is dugong not your favorite Pokemon? I don't need a seal Pokemon. I need Trubbish the Pokemon.
Starting point is 01:43:35 Doong is quite beautiful. Here's the thing is real seals are so good that no, you don't need a dugong. Yeah, but doong is, I feel like, no offense. Some seals ugly. Dugong only beautiful I know we're doing a question block episode later I hope all the questions are what the fuck is wrong with you Seals are never ugly
Starting point is 01:44:03 I'm looking at Dugong Water Ice Type Pokemon Oh a Gen 1 guy Yeah Okay so he's an OG I think Dugong is my guy You like Dugong? Yeah it looks good All right
Starting point is 01:44:14 Good looking guy There you go But anyway I do gong Gong Hell yeah There you go
Starting point is 01:44:26 I don't remember what I was saying before I said the thing about What did you said Then my name You really just
Starting point is 01:44:34 threw me for a loop Actually You fucked me up Matt at Bokdaika Oh yeah I said I could do Good with Boktai Yeah you could
Starting point is 01:44:40 And that was worth Getting back to it Yeah there we go I'm glad we did it I do like the idea of Auteur collections but I could see a lot of those things like, yeah, even like the Sam Lake collection, you know, he, I don't think Remedy owns Max Payne 1 and 2.
Starting point is 01:45:00 Well, I mean, as I mentioned, this will be a thing, and maybe Atari is trying to kind of turn itself into the criterion of games. I think there'll need to be some sort of, you know, artisan label that focuses on that sort of curation of the classics and is able to secure the rights to some of these sorts of things. Because there's a, I want to read the list on this one. There's a collection that I'm not particularly interested in, apart from the amount of games in it in the value. It's the Disney Afternoon Collection, which features Ducktails. Good game.
Starting point is 01:45:33 Duck Tales 2. Chippendale Rescue Rangers 1 and 2, Tailspin, Darkwing Duck, and then on the Switch versions, you also get bonkers and goof troop. That's fun. And I'm just like, it's cool that there's a Marvel one that has all these Marvel games here
Starting point is 01:45:49 that just came out. I think this should be the path. If there's not going to be physical additions for things, there should be at least a digital archive of these types of games where you can just buy a collection and have everything. That to me is a good, is good for preservation,
Starting point is 01:46:10 but a physical disc would be way better to me or a cartridge of some kind. What about the Mega Man Ann Anniversary Collection? Absolutely. Sure. released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2 GameCub and Xbox to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Mega Man. It included Mega Man's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 plus Mega Man the Power Battle, Mega Man 2, the Power Fighters, plus if you got the PlayStation version, an entire episode of the 1994 Mega Man cartoon,
Starting point is 01:46:42 or on GameCub and Xbox, it had interviews with the series Creators. creator KG Inafune. And the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions also included high-quality remixed soundtracks for the games that were toggleable. So you could hear the original music or a new remixed version. Yeah, that's a cool feature. That's really, really great. And I do think that's a good point, too, is that I want them to be as original as they can. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:47:11 But go ahead and do remixes that I can toggle on and off. Go ahead and include quality of life stuff if you want. Yep. Let me remap buttons. Let me remap buttons. Let me make the game easier if I want. Or, hey, maybe make it even harder. Who knows?
Starting point is 01:47:27 Yeah. But include options if you got it. Or leave it as is. That's fine, too. Both are fine. I love toggling between music and art styles in real time. Oh, yeah. That's just good clean fun.
Starting point is 01:47:42 That's one of the cool things about, we talked about it a couple weeks ago with Zig, but in the Halo Master Chief Collection, you can just press a button while you're playing it, and it'll toggle between like the updated, like, remaster graphics and the original, which is incredible. Yeah. In conclusion, compilations,
Starting point is 01:48:03 unreal, anthologies. What is he doing? Whatever you want to call them. They have a place in our hearts because what are we but collectors? At the end of the day, we're collectors. And we have collections. I've come on board. I've sort of, I've seen the light and I have to be on this side of it.
Starting point is 01:48:21 But some games are collections in and of themselves. And you can kind of collect those collections too. Kind of a Russian nesting doll of collecting. Maybe Nick shouldn't eat at all during record days. The end. The end. Shall we do a segment? Let's do a segment.
Starting point is 01:48:46 All right. This is a new segment. Oh, I'll read you a title. You tell me if it's the subtitle of a real video game or the title of a real Dom De Louise movie. This is subtitle or Dom DeLuze. Rance, you know who Dom Deloese is? Oh, no. Dom DeLuiz character actor who passed away in the early 2000s.
Starting point is 01:49:07 Yes. An array of credits, primarily comedy, but was a versatile actor who was known as kind of like a fat guy. And you look at him, he's like, this guy wasn't that fat. That's like my favorite thing. I mean, I feel like this point's been beating the death. but like they make so much fun of Vincent Dinoffreo and full metal jackets. They're like, this guy is fucking fat. He's like, like thinner than me.
Starting point is 01:49:29 It's like crazy. World was different before high fructose corn syrup. All right, so everyone can guess subtitle or dom title. So I'll read it and you both get a chance to guess. Ranch, can you keep score? Thank you. All right. First up, is this a subtitle or a dom title?
Starting point is 01:49:45 The Phantom Pain. Matt, that's a subtitle. Subtitle. It's for Metal Gear Solid Five, the Phantom Pain. You are, you are correct. That is a subtitle. You both get a point.
Starting point is 01:49:55 Yeah, you don't have to buzz in. You can both guess. Great. To get an extra point if we get the... Yeah, you get an extra point if you name what the... If you name the full title, you can get extra point. Starting now. Okay, great.
Starting point is 01:50:07 Next up, the cannonball run. That is a DOM title. I mean, I think... I think either is one or the other. So I feel like I can't say I can't say the same thing as you. You can do whatever you want. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:50:23 Okay. Because I do think it is, I think he's in it. Yeah. It is a Dom title. It is a 1981 Dom Deloese movie about a cross-country road race starring Bert Reynolds, Roger Moore,
Starting point is 01:50:33 and Farrah Fawcett. I wouldn't have thought of it necessarily as a Dom Deloese movie. Right. Because I think of it as a Bert Reynolds movie. Yeah, yeah. It's Cannibal Run. But he's in it.
Starting point is 01:50:43 All right. It's two two. Next up. Is this a subtitle or a title, Hot Pursuit. That is a subtitle, and I know the name of the game in its entirety, but I want to wait until after Matt thinks I'm right or wrong. So I guess I should have said.
Starting point is 01:51:00 I know that you're right. All of that. I know that you're right, and I know the full title as well. Okay. Well, then we're right. All right. So here's what we're going to do. We're going to change how this works.
Starting point is 01:51:10 We're going to buzz in. You get sub-title or Dom title. because it seems like we maybe don't have audio poker faces here and then you can add and we're telling each other that we know that the other one so we're starting from scratch it's zero zero those three that was a tutorial level oh we learned we learn that was a tutorial level all right next up
Starting point is 01:51:32 buzz in with your name it was need for speed hopper yeah it was that yeah it was need for speed hopper sure is this a subtitle or a dom title future soldier oh fuck it got so hard on all of a sudden. Matt. I think I'm going to go Dom title. No, it's a subtitle.
Starting point is 01:51:54 Sorry. Heather, do you want to guess what the subtitle is? Future Soldier? It'd be crazy if he was in a movie called Future Soldier. I don't know this one. This is Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
Starting point is 01:52:05 Future Soldier. Oh, interesting. Okay. Next up. Fail safe. Oh, Matt, that could really go either way. Yeah, and also it's funny that we got cut off out of the tutorial at such hard titles. Yes.
Starting point is 01:52:24 Fail save. Fail save. I'll go ahead and say, I think this is a Dom title. Matt is correct. That is a Dom title. This is a 1964 Dom Deloese political thriller directed by Sidney Lumet starring Henry Fonda as the president. Great movie. What a career this guy's had.
Starting point is 01:52:41 Yeah. Yeah. This is one of his early roles. He plays a, he plays a, he plays a, general or something. Incredible. That movie, that movie fucks. Next up, honor among thieves. Heather, that is a
Starting point is 01:52:54 subtitle for Uncharted. You get one point, but that is the wrong game. Fuck. But it is a subtitle to Sly Cooper 2. Fuck! Wait, no, it's Sly Cooper 3. Oh. You corrected yourself. It is Sly 3

It is an 1989 Dom Deloese movie that was never released based on a fairy tale written by Oscar Wild. Do you have any information of why it wasn't released?
Starting point is 01:55:28 I think they didn't finish it. Did he pass away? No, no, he was still alive. Visible uncircumcised. Here's something from the IMDB review of the Princess and the Dwarf. Title, I was one of the actors on this film. I was one of the actors who never got paid. The best part for me was playing the king's advisor to Dom Deloese, the king.
Starting point is 01:55:52 Before the director would say action, I would lean over Dom's shoulder and say things like Orange Flash in the 5th at Belmont. The first time I did it, he turned and said, What the hell are you talking about? I said, I'm advising the king. Dom broke up and after that we exchanged Italian recipes. On my 65th birthday, he sent me a lovely drawing of his. The world will miss his wit and charm.
