Starting point is 00:02:34 There, we'll wander around and soak up simple, timeless joys, taking in the cheerful sights and sounds of a happy summer evening. So, make yourself as cozy as can be, and if needed, spend a moment going through any familiar rituals or routines that help you. you settle in when you come to bed, invite your breathing to relax to a gentle pace, and with that your nervous system will slow down, and your mind will gradually become calmer and quieter, making space for you to visualize tonight's tale. So, see if you can imagine a happy crowd, milling about in a seaside amusement park.
Starting point is 00:03:49 It's a very cheerful scene. There's a hubbub of activity, but it's a relaxed and pleasant kind. The people are at ease. No one is in a rush. They're all just enjoying their day, out and about. Perhaps you hear a child laughing, old friends greeting each other.
Starting point is 00:04:22 A snatch of music or waves crashing on the shore. Allow yourself to envision the scene for some time. Take another calming breath. Then, when you're ready, we'll travel to this wonderful place. As we begin our story. The sand of palm trees waves softly in the mild breeze coming off the water. The green of the palm fronds stands out against the deep blue sky of the early evening. You are at a waterfront amusement park in late summer.
Starting point is 00:05:46 Crowds of people thread their way between rides and stands. Their laughter and happy voices mingle. in the warm air. Thrill seekers line up by roller coasters and ferris wheels, but you're not here to go on the rides. You're here to soak up the atmosphere, people watch, and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the summer evening. To your right, you look out at a wide beach that slopes gently,
Starting point is 00:06:27 into a calm bay, the sun glints off the moving water. Nearby, a group of young teenagers laugh and jostle each other. They're trying their hands at a ring-toss game. The prize is a giant stuffed panda for a perfect score. Lesser scores earn a choice from a selection of smaller stuffed animals. Up ahead, a small child holds fast to a string. The string is tied to a large yellow balloon, which her father has just bought her from a cart.
Starting point is 00:07:18 The balloon cart placed cheerful tunes from a speaker, and bubbles flow from a bubble machine fixed to its side. Giggling toddlers jump around in the stream of floating bubbles. They clap excitedly, trying to catch the glistening bubbles in their small hands. You stroll on at a leisurely pace, enjoying the sights and sounds, and the warm breeze coming off the salty water of the bay. A colorful airborne gondola glides by overhead. Each carriage painted a different bright,
Starting point is 00:08:07 cheerful shade. A lemon yellow carriage is followed by a teal blue one, a grass green one, and a lollipop red one. The bright carriages of the ride look picturesque against the blue sky, whose color is growing deeper and richer as the afternoon slides into evening. You smell the buttery sense. scent of popcorn now, mixing with a salty smell from the water. You look around for its source and spot a window in a nearby building.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Families are lining up in front of it to buy tubs of popcorn or ice cream cones. You move closer to take a better look. The menu is short and classic at this little. snack stand. Large or small tubs of popcorn are on offer, as well as a choice of vanilla or chocolate soft serve ice cream. The ice cream may be dipped in butterscotch or chocolate sauce for an extra 50 cents. There's a continuity on display here that makes you smile. You doubt that the menu has changed much, if at all, since the amusement park first opened a little more than a hundred years ago. You know how long the park has been in operation, because there's a wall display of
Starting point is 00:10:04 historic photographs from the earlier years of the seaside pleasure center. Your train of thought about the snack menu has piqued your curiosity regarding the history of the area, so you decide to go and take a look at the photo display. You walk over to it and examine the pictures, as well as the explanatory text alongside them. It seems that the first tourist attractions here were built around the 1860s, more than a century and a half ago. That was when local entrepreneurs constructed public bathhouses along the bay here to serve visitors to the beach. Swimming in the sea had become particularly popular at the time, and it was viewed as a kind of natural medicine. The practice was known as taking the waters, and it was widely believed to promote good health.
Starting point is 00:11:21 The bathhouses offered places for visitors to change into their bathing costumes. These bathing suits bore little resemblance to the swimsuits boarded by people on the beach today, judging by the old photos. Americans in the Victorian period, like Europeans, were famous for their extreme modesty. and it certainly looks like they used to put on nearly as many clothes as they took off when preparing to swim. Despite these undoubtedly encumbering outfits, though, visitors apparently flocked to the beach here during the high season, much like they still do. Old photographs from the end of the 1800s show happy crowds on the beach. and in the shallow water.
Starting point is 00:12:27 It's odd, looking at these grainy, black and white photos from so long ago. In one way, they seem a world apart from the present. The clothing and less developed waterfront have changed so much. Yet in other ways, those old scenes feel relatable and familiar. You recognize the same enjoyment and energy on the long-ago faces as you see around you today. You recognize the happiness of the children in the photos, splashing in the black and white waves. The young lovers reclining on blankets on the black and white sand. The people swimming or boating in the blue.
Starting point is 00:13:30 black and white, and then you're pulled back to the present for a moment, as you notice a pair of young adults walk by you, heading for the beach. Watching them, you think that you were right, even though so much has changed outwardly in the intervening years. Underneath, life carries on now much. as it did back in the time of the old photos. You turn back to the display. A historic timeline of the amusement park accompanies the photos.
Starting point is 00:14:23 You read with interest that by the late 1800s, more and more businesses had opened around the bathhouses, catering to the crowds of people. beachgoers. These businesses included restaurants, gift shops, and photo stands, where visitors could commemorate their outings. By the early 1900s, a grand casino and ballroom were built, along with a huge indoor salt water swimming pool. A particularly ambitious entrepreneur then envisioned creating a boardwalk
Starting point is 00:15:16 inspired by Coney Island, New York's legendary waterfront area, known for its rides and attractions of all kinds. And indeed, by about 1910, The first rides were constructed. These were a merry-go-round and an early roller coaster, which was called a scenic railway in the terminology of the time. As you finish reading the historic timeline,
Starting point is 00:16:00 three small children dash past you, giggling. Their hands are clasped tight. You turn to watch them race to line up for a little ride nearby. It's an airplane ride. Airplane-shaped seats are affixed to long spokes that connect, in turn, to a central pole. When the ride starts, the airplanes circle the pole, going up and down somewhat ponderously to the great delight of their small riders.
Starting point is 00:16:51 You watch as the three young children wait patiently. They don't have to be patient long, though. Their turn soon comes, and they climb eagerly into the airplane seat. one child to each plane. When the ride starts up, their airplanes lift off the ground, and the smallest of the three children whoops in excitement.
Starting point is 00:17:33 He spins a little steering wheel industriously, while the plane glides along its preset course around the pool. The boy's face is glowing, with joy. His hair whipping back from his brow with a plane's movement through the air. Smiling at the sight, you wamble on. You can hear splashing and happy cries up ahead. It's a water ride. Passengers sit in boats that follow a river course. They go up and down and all around, with a final splashdown that elicits particular glee from the riders. You're starting to feel a bit tired now.
Starting point is 00:18:41 So you take a seat on a bench to relax and watch the boat ride for a while. Water splashes into the air when the boat slide down. the final descent. Droplets arc through the air, sprinkling the riders who shrink and laugh in delight. It's pleasant just to sit here and rest, taking in the happy activity all around you and feeling the warm breeze on your bare arms.
Starting point is 00:19:31 You breathe in a deep draught of the fresh sea air. After a time, you feel rested, so you stand up and stretch gently. You reach your arms over your head and arch your back luxuriously. Then you stroll on. You're in no rush. Just beyond the boat ride, you come across the beautiful merry-go-round from the old black and white photos you saw in the historic display. It's a joy to see this jewel from the past come to life in full color in front of you.
Starting point is 00:20:44 The carousel sparkles with bright. paint. Its sides bedeked with colorful curle cues and little murals of old-fashioned scenes. Each carousel horse is painted cheerfully with fanciful saddles and bridles. Classic merry-go-round music plays out, as it has done season after season, year after year for over a century now. The horses go up and down, round and round in their stately procession. Carrying happy riders of all ages is the park's oldest ride. generations have ridden it over the years. You watch the current riders and wonder if some of their grandparents,
Starting point is 00:22:11 great-grandparents, or even great-great-grandparents wrote it in years gone by. You imagine a family's history seen through the eyes of one of the wooden, carousel horses. They must have seen generations pass through this park. Young couples falling in love, and followed years later by their children. And then those children's children after them. At last, you turn and walk on a bit dreamily.
Starting point is 00:23:03 of your mind still lost in those fantasies about the past. Even as you soak up the present all around you, you observe the pleasant hub-up with part of your attention, letting it wash over you as your mind wanders. And then a realization begins to do. dawn on you. Yes, you're here to observe and to enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful early evening light. But now you realize you'd like to participate a little too. You don't plan to ride any roller coasters or merry-go-rounds. Not this time.
Starting point is 00:24:16 But the gondolas gliding overhead offer a tempting option and a sweeping view of the park and the bay. Making up your mind, you walk up to a booth and procure a ticket to ride the gondola. Then you mount a low staircase and take your place in the short line,
Starting point is 00:24:52 line to board the carriages. It's your turn almost immediately. A bright green carriage slides up to the boarding platform where you stand waiting. A friendly young man working the ride ushers you into the carriage and he secures the door behind you. The road. The road. The road. The road. The road. The ride begins moving, making its way over the amusement park. You gaze out of the carriage's clear sides. You see the beach below you, just off to your right, running alongside the park. You see the waves lapping the beach. The calm waters. The calm waters. of the bay and the sea beyond. You see the pale blue sky above the water.
Starting point is 00:26:18 It's just beginning to turn pink and gold with a sinking sun. You watch the sunset begin to paint the sky with orange and lavender and more shades of glowing color, the gondola carriage glides along. And then the sun slides down below the horizon and you lean against the back of your seat, taking it all in. You notice the gentle motion of the gondola.
Starting point is 00:27:11 The loveliness of the sky. The peacefulness of riding through the air like this. Quiet and serene. And then the carriage begins to slow down. It glides to a stop back at the boarding platform. You step out. accepting a helping hand from the friendly young man, even though you don't really need it. You descend the stairs once again, carrying the peacefulness of the sky inside you.
Starting point is 00:28:11 As you re-enter the cheerful clamor of the park, you're ready to leave. the park and head back now, you decide to eat a simple dinner before an early night. Your long walk around the amusement park has left you pleasantly tired, and you look forward to settling into your cozy bed. So you cast a last glance around. the merry scene and then you make your way at a comfortable pace towards the exit as you stroll out of the amusement park and on to the sidewalk outside a soft evening breeze comes up and then just as fades away. You hear the distant sounds of laughter and music drifting from the park as you walk away. Behind that, you can just make out the sound of waves on the sand. You walk a few short blocks.
Starting point is 00:29:59 then go inside to enjoy a simple dinner of wholesome food before getting ready for bed. Your meal doesn't take long, and soon you get started on your evening routine, brushing your teeth and preparing for sleep. Then you slip between the covers, grateful for your pleasant day, and equally grateful for the opportunity to rest now. The sheets are cool and smooth, and you exhale peacefully when you feel their touch. The pillow is soft and downy, and it sinks luxuriously as you lay your tired head down on it.
Starting point is 00:31:22 You've left a window open, and the coolness of the evening floats in. The air caresses your brow as you pull the covers, around you. Tomorrow, there will be more to do, to see, and to experience. There will be challenges, no doubt, and gratifications. But for now, you can leave all of that for its own time. For this time, this moment, you have nothing to take care of. Nowhere to go.
Starting point is 00:32:37 Nothing to do. Except feel the soft pillow yielding beneath your weight. The covers hugging you tight. The evening air. blowing over and around you. You give yourself up to these sensations and allow yourself to settle into a welcome rest. Soon, sleep will come.
Starting point is 00:33:34 It will be a while. Whatever happens is your time to let your body relax. your muscles unwind your mind your breathing grow calm and steady time of rest is a gift how yourself to accept it with grace your worries and expectations go and just feel what you feel as the quiet night goes on.
