Outside the window, Clem can see it's a crisp autumn day. Brown leaves flutter and dance over
the ground in the muted daylight. He just finished his rising from the cup carries just a hint of cinnamon.
He takes a sip. The tart apple flavour reminds him of last autumn and the one before that.
the one before that. Clem looks outside and feels his eyes relax as they follow the leaves in the trees, blowing
in the wind.
Even though the view is the same as it has always been, the light is bluer and colder than
it is in the summer.
It has that special quality that comes now as the year winds down.
Today is the day he'll dust off his Thanksgiving recipes.
He keeps them in a special red fabric covered recipe book in a cabinet alongside extra crockery and a set of coffee mugs. Opening the cabinet doors,
he sees it straight away. The weight of the little book in his hands is familiar and comforting. It
makes him think of all the other holidays spent with the people he loves.
Clem flips the book open to the right place. Then, he finds a notepad and starts jotting down the ingredients he'll need
for all the food he plans to prepare.
With Thanksgiving just a day away, it will be busy,
but he's confident it will be a success.
But he's confident it will be a success. For Clem, thanksgiving is as much about his friends as it is about family.
A group of his closest friends have been coming to celebrate for the last several years,
along with his cousins and their kids. Everyone brings something to contribute to the
feast. In that way, they all work together to make the day perfect.
The side dishes will depend on which friends plan to come.
Laura always makes macaroni and cheese.
It sits in a hefty glass casserole dish.
Somehow she manages to toast the top to a perfect golden brown every time. When she takes it out of the oven, it fills the room with the
smell of warm nutty cheddar. The macaroni itself is chewy and perfect for carrying gobs
of warm cheese. He's pretty sure she's coming, so that's one dish he can cross off the list.
But he ought to make a cranberry sauce, he thinks. His cousin Marie taught him a delectable
recipe for that. It has a zesty orange flavor that takes the tartness of the
cranberries to another level. If Klem makes the sauce himself, it will save Marie some trouble.
She's got to wrangle two young kids already.
One has been known to do cartwheels in the house before the family sits down at the table.
He smiles to himself, thinking of how much fun he had as a child on Thanksgiving, free
to play while the adults prepared the meal.
Now time has passed and he can enjoy their fun as his aunts and uncles did for him years
ago.
Clem adds cranberries and oranges to his shopping list.
Then he puts down his pen and picks up the phone.
It's time to check in with everyone and confirm who can make it.
And also what they'll bring so he can be sure to have everything else.
By the end of his calls, Clem is filled with joy.
Once again, he remembers just how special this holiday is.
The voices of his family and friends, each with their particular timbres and phrases,
are comforting to him as he replays the conversations in his mind.
He's looking forward to seeing them in person, hugging them as they arrive, and sharing a meal and festive spirit with them.
