Me and the team really appreciate your support. You set out from Atlanta in the late morning. The tall skyscrapers of downtown stand out against the bright blue sky. You can tell by the way the clouds hang over you that it will be warm today. The humidity is already beginning to settle on the city like a blanket.
Starting point is 00:01:09 It will be cooler in the mountains, which is one reason you've decided to head up there this morning. The drive isn't too long. In fact, it takes just the right amount of time to make you feel like you really entered the country, but are too far away to return home the following day. You'll spend the night at a cozy cabin tucked away in the woods. You make your way through the congestion of the city in your car. There is a little bit of traffic because all the folks heading out of town for the weekend.
Starting point is 00:01:55 Like them, you long for fewer people and more nature, and you're eager to lose yourself in the secluded spaces you can find in the countryside. The Blue Ridge Mountains comprise part of the larger range that is the Appalachian Mountains. At over one billion years old, they are among the oldest in the world. The Rockies and the Himalayan are young by comparison. In places, they overlap the great smoking mountains, but their fluid boundaries don't diminish their beauty. Altogether, they offer some of the most exquisite sights in the world. At times, the peaks are shrouded in fog, lending a mysterious air.
Starting point is 00:02:57 In the autumn, their slopes are covered in a breathtaking cloak of red, yellow, orange and gold. Winter brings snow to their hidden hollows, and in summer they offer lush green forests and babbling brooks. One of the most beautiful sections lies were the states of Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee meat. There you can find towns with names like Mineral Bluff and Windy Ridge, Grassy Creek, Fry and Duck down. The Appalachian Trail crosses near here, winding its way over 2,000 miles of American wilderness toward its terminus and main. But you'll leave the trail to the hikers for now, Instead driving your car along the road to Blood Mountain.
Starting point is 00:04:09 It's the direct link connecting the city and the country. One of the few roads that can transport you from the to the rural area of the North Georgia Mountains. As you begin to follow its canoey path into the foothills, you're reminded of the saying that what goes up must come down. About an hour into the drive from Atlanta, the massive and congested interstate highway tapers into a two-lane country road. All traces of city life eventually give way to the inigmatic web of wild roads, lanes, and tracks that crisscross the mountains here. Green trees move in closer to the sides of the road.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Above you, the sky is growing heavy. It looks like a thunderstorm might be on its way. You take the curves gently, feeling the car maneuvering well up and down the ribbon of pavement. A soft rain begins to pat her atop the roof and you turn on the windshield wipers. They swish back and forth rhythmically, keeping time as you continue to climb the mountainside. The road twists and turns through the mysterious various, barcely populated country. On both sides of the road, thickets of deciduous forests occupy most of the space. You pass road signs for places called Wolfpen Gap and Secret Falls, which lend themselves
Starting point is 00:06:23 to the imagination. Here busy streets have given way to densely forested land and lone stretches of road, with a few houses, a handful of barns and not another soul inside. not another soul inside.
