on the OG show with Mike Miller and Udonis Haslam, two of his former players of Florida, and offered his thoughts on the current state of college basketball.

What are your thoughts on the NIL and what it looks like? I know you're not in it. You guys, while you were in college, should be taken care of with the amount of money that gets generated through athletics. So I know you're not in it. and they're not happy in the situation, not getting ready to play? They can't leave. No doubt. And I think that you've got to be able to work your way through some adversity and difficulty sometimes to find out a little bit more about yourself. And the way it's set up is there's no resiliency of going through anything that's difficult and tough in life.

Because it's like, you know what? I'm making $300,000 here, but I can pick up and go over here and make this. And I can go do that. And I don't know necessarily necessarily that's the best thing. He in the NBA? He was with the Thunder. He was with the Thunder, wasn't he? But now he's with the Bulls.

He's with the Bulls and he's never heard of Kevin Durant, Kyrie, James Harden, right? They signed contracts, they don't like where they are. They asked for a trade. But if you get stuck on that team, he wants everybody to stick it out and not ask out. But he's saying we already started that moment.

And that was my thing with NIL from the beginning. I'm like, okay, you see these kids getting all this money. Now you're going to start treating them like professionals. But they're not professionals. They're amateurs. They're kids. So that's where my, like, he's talking about these kids like they're adults. They're not adults.

They might have not even went to the right school to begin with. Yep. So I think they should be able to leave when they want. Because they're kids. This is their future that they're trying to build. And the coach that you're dealing with can be a toxic fucking coach. Yeah. And as soon as you get to, you're like, he wooed me on the phone.

Threw all this money at me. Told my mama he's going to take care of me and wooed me. It's the first day I get here, I'm ready to go. Yeah. I mean, it's on both sides, right? You know, as an individual, if you keep running, you're going to always run. That's one thing, right?

If you can't just really stick in there. But then, you know, as coaches, you got to be on your P's and Q's now because you can't lie to kids. Right. Just to get the talent on and to build your team, right. You can't do that anymore because now these kids can leave and they do not get penalized like before. Before, if I want to leave, I got to sit out a year. Talk about it.

That doesn't work anymore. Now I can just leave and I can play. Bring that back because for me, being a transfer kid, sitting out that year was very scary for me, but it actually ended up being very beneficial because I got to get my academics in order. I know you don't care about that, but I got my academics in order. I got to get used to the team and acclimate myself without being like a distraction or a nuisance trying to get mine immediately. And then once I was eligible again, like we weren't learning as we were going. Like, we already had a year. So you were cool with sitting out that whole year?

I mean, it wasn't cool, but, like, thinking back, like, yeah, I couldn't imagine just going from Maryland straight to Duke and hopping in on that team and having the career I had at Duke if I had just hopped in and became that player that was there. When I made the decision to stay at Carolina my freshman year, Matt Doherty put us through the ringer one practice, and I remember walking to the curtain, and I was about to leave and transfer.

And I looked up in the rafters and the banners up there, and I was like, I didn't come here for him. I came here for that. So the ultimate deciding factor was, I'm not trying to sit out a year. I lose what I'm chasing, which is draft status and trying to be top five. It's like that whole year, it puts it in your mind. Like, I can't. Nah, I'm not missing no year.

So if you did bring it back, I think it would dilute out the bullshit that he's talking about. So question for you, though, let's go back to that time, right, when you were ready to dip. If you didn't have to sit out that year, you could have been gone. You would have been out. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. But, yeah, I mean, I think these kids are going to have to really sit down with themselves because there are a lot of kids, like, they, yes, you are the problem.

You were on your third school in four years. You are the problem. Yeah. Like, you're not going to keep're on your third school in four years. You are the problem. You're not going to keep bouncing around schools and blaming everybody else. What's going on is these teams or these schools are going after the parent, right? And obviously the parent really don't know shit about what's going on. They don't know the school.

They don't know the division. They don't know the players that's on the team. They don't know the style, how fast they play. They don't know shit about what's going on. They don't know the school. They don't know the division. They don't know the players that's on the team. They don't know the style, how fast they play. They don't know nothing. All they're saying is, hey, are you going to pay my kid? Oh, shit. Are you going to pay my kid? That's it? Yeah, that's it. Are you going to pay my kid? How much are you going to give me? That's the conversation now? Yes.

They give you the money. Everybody thinks they're worth $200,000. You give them the money. Now that kid goes to school. That kid don't know nothing about the school. You got a guard. I'm a guard, and there's five guards here. And then I'm not playing, now I want to transfer. You promised me that I was going to, now that kid's going to transfer. Now, do your research on the school. Make sure the school fits your child, the talent, the way they play.

Do they have room? If you're a freshman coming in, the person that's in front of you, what you are they? If they're a sophomore and they're good, good luck, right? You're going to be transferring, right? If it's a senior and you're coming in,

you have a chance to make that spot. If it's a junior and you're a freshman and that's a senior, you probably get to learn a little bit. You'll have the team for yourself. And so there's more than just looking at a fucking name, looking at a name, and then saying, oh, this is where I'm going to go. Yeah, I'm in the Pac-13, whatever the fuck they want to call it. Right?

Pac-2, Gil. The Pac-2 now? The Pac-2. Yeah, you know what I mean? The Pac. And that's the thing. It's like all these parents are chasing money and they're not really doing their You cooking right now cuz my dad told me the same shit when I chose Carolina. He didn't like Carolina

And I had all of the schools recruiting me. So I jumped at Carolina when they gave me the offer. But they was like the last school to offer me. So it was like, son, the first school to offer me was Clemson. Like my sophomore year. I was ready to take that shit right then and there. He's like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. You're going to get way more than this.

And we ain't going to no goddamn Clemson. We ain't going to no goddamn Clemson So I understand that to a to a to a real high degree When my dad had that conversation with me like so we need to do some research I was like I know I want to go mm-hmm and ended up panning out for the most part Well, I think a lot of people don't remember 2007 after Billy Donovan went back to back championships. He took a job with the Magic, eventually reconsidered, went back to Florida.

But I think NIL now and this transfer portal has created a system of checks and balances. Like you guys are saying, coach can promise you the world. You get on campus, they not fucking with you, whatever it may be. But coaches have been doing this just since the beginning of time. They make a run in the tournament with a smaller school.
