Welcome back to Gills Arena, presented by Polymarketing Powered by Playmaker.
Whoa, whoa!
Glorious Tuesday here in Gills Arena.
A lot of things to discuss, gentlemen, just make sure we got hot mics.
Our mics are on right now.
Be careful what you said.
Let's go, writers.
Shout out to the light-skinned it.
Thrive or getting you 2026.
This is Gilles Arena presented by Polymarking and Powered by Playmaker.
Whipo.
I'm merely a host, Josiah Johnson, here with NBA legend.
2K Unk with badges, Gilbert Arenas.
So, exciting.
You're the hardest working man on YouTube.
You got Gills Arena.
You got, We Said What We Said.
I saw what we said.
I saw a lot of Mellie and Swaggy.
First episode.
Talking about things that are a little bit different than what we talk about Ernie
Arena.
I get to attack culture.
Uh-oh.
Joining us in the arena day, one of the greatest hoopers to come out of LA,
former third overall pick out of the UCLA,
who went on to play 13th season in the league where it was a two-time all-star,
and now you can see him starring in the new film Last Shot,
premiering the theater's October 2nd, Baron Davis.
Welcome back to Gil's Arena.
Go see that movie, let's go.
And we got another legend in the building,
former Sacramento King, which is very pertinent for our conversations today.
Four-time All-Star, two-time All-NBA selection.
DeMarcus cousins is back at Gills Arena.
That's Sacramento.
It's different, don't it?
Seven Chili's isn't the only thing they have going on in Sacramento.
But we got a lot of things to discuss.
Here's what's cracking in the arena today.
So Wimby says he's lost sleep thinking about the Spurs.
finals lost, will the alien in his squad use last year's disappointment to fuel them to a championship
run this season?
Tyrese Halliburton makes his return after missing last season with an Achilles injury.
Will the haliband terrorize the east or has the Pacers window been shut?
And Ben Simmons back in the league after taking a year off from basketball, has some strong
words for his haters with a realistic expectations for the former number one pick this
season.
And as a reminder, ladies and gentlemen, mostly fans is back.
exclusively for our super chat.
Throw some in the offering plate.
Drop your questions.
We'll make sure we try to get to all of them
at the end of the show.
We appreciate y'all,
supporting everything we do.
But I need to tell you all about this new sports
trading app I discovered
is called Polymarket.
It's the most exciting way to trade in sports
and it's a nationwide federally regulated
prediction market.
Polymarket is the best prediction market
better than Kalshi, Draft Kings,
and Fandul in the past.
If you wanted a position on a game,
you'd put your money in and get locked in
until the very end, but Polymarket lets you trade games like you would have stock, buying
in and selling out entirely on your terms.
When your team drops to 20 cents, you buy the dip, and when they jump to 40 cents, you
sell, locking your gains, and double your money without waiting for the final whistle,
and it isn't just sports.
You can trade on culture, news, and current events.
Plus, they have a squads feature where you can talk and trade with your friends.
Any trade of member places drops right into the chat as a card, and anyone can hit by to
take that same pick in one tap.
This is the old limitations and trade on your terms.
Download the Polymarket app and use Code Arena.
And when you deposit just $10, you'll unlock $50 in bonus funds.
That's Code Arena to get $50 in bonus funds when you deposit just $10 on Polymarket.
And of course, Gills Arena everywhere you want to be.
So shout out to everybody watching the show on Twitch.
I heard we've been improving our numbers running them things over on Twitch.
Make sure you subscribe to our Twitch channel, Gills Arena Show.
And we appreciate y'all for all the subs.
So we're going to start this show.
Sacramento.
After sitting out last season to focus on his fin.
We're not going all the way there yet.
Let's let's.
We got to warm up first.
We got to warm up first.
He thought the king sat out off.
After sitting out last season to focus on his physical and mental health,
former number one pick,
Ben Simmons is back in the league after signing a one year,
$3.5 million vet minimum deal with the Kings.
Simmons spent the last year rehabbing back and leg injuries
while spending some time away from the game.
So during King's Media Day,
he had a strong message for the critics who questioned his love for the game.
Yeah, and I think that was more so just my body.
It wasn't about if I wanted to play.
And all these people talk about I don't love the game.
That's bullshit.
I love this game.
If I didn't, I wouldn't have taken that year to focus on myself and get back to where I'm at.
That's just people talking.
You hear stuff all the time.
It's just people talking.
People want clicks.
People want to get their podcast off.
Take a toll on you, though?
It does at a point, but I think, you know, at this stage of my career and life, like, I'm not worried about it.
So, Manzim is tired of people questioning his love for the game.
Sivin missed significant time in the previous years, including the entire 21-22 season while dealing with a holdout and back injury,
has underwent multiple back surgeries, including a March of 24 when he was with the Nets,
played 51 games in the 24-25 season with the Nets and Clippers.
He average 5.6 assists, five rebounds, 22 minutes per game.
but the three-time all-star, two-time all-defensive selection
appears to be in great shape and fully moisturized.
Simmons expected to be both a versatile part of the King's rotation
and mentor to first-round pick Darius A-Cup Jr.
It says the makings of a comeback story.
No one saw coming, so let's start.
King's legend, buggy back in the building.
Ben Simmons, former number one overall pick,
what should we expect from Ben Simmons as he fights
to resume his career with the Kings?
I'm hoping to bounce back here, you know?
You know, throughout my career, in my experiences, I've kind of grown a soft spot for just the mental part of, you know, dealing with this, you know, this sport, everything that comes with it.
So, no, respect to him to even be brave enough to, you know, come out and say I needed that.
I needed that year off.
I needed to clear my mind.
I needed to heal my body and all those things.
So credit to him for even being brave enough to say it.
But, you know, I'm hoping for the best for the kid.
I can't sit here and be like I think he's going to come out on the average 20 and 10.
He didn't do that before he, you know, before he went out.
But I do expect to bounce back gear for him.
Hopefully he's 100% healthy, not only physically, but, you know, mentally as well.
And, you know, I expect a big year.
He's a veteran in his league.
I think he can be a huge help for a kid like, you know, Darius A Cuff,
kind of show him the ups and downs.
I mean, he was at the mountain top.
at one point in this career,
now he's, you know, I guess you can say
at the bottom. So that's
a load of experience, in my opinion.
So he could be really helpful
to those young guys in the locker room.
But him individually,
I just hope to see him happy and enjoying the game
that he claims he loves.
And I think if that's the case,
then that year off was a success
and it worked for him.
So, you know, we'll see.
The game he claims to love.
I mean, he said he love it.
Okay.
Do you feel like that was?
I mean, I don't know.
I mean, it's hard to see.
The fact that he's still doing it, the fact that he's, you know,
he stepped back into this light,
considering everything that he went through before that point,
I think that shows a commitment.
I think that shows a love for the game,
even through all the scrutiny that, you know, he received before
and that he's going to continue to receive because, you know,
even though he took that ear off,
it's still going to be ups and downs.
It's still going to be bad games.
That's just a part of this sport.
Like, all of those are natural things.
So I'm expecting more scrutiny, you know, throughout the process.
So the fact that he's willing to step back out in the field and get active, it shows that
he loves this game he's committed.
How much?
I don't know.
You know what I'm saying?
It may be a bad year to where he wants to take another year off.
I don't know.
But like I said, from what he's saying, you know, he loves the game.
So.

Here's what you missed.
And the argument is, do you want to win?
If you don't win, you have no power.
It's real.
Those are the very people who I always say vote against their own economic interests and they complain about the very thing they're receiving.
It's raw.
I knew that the issue of transgender athletes was not going well with a lot of black men.

Hey everybody, it's me, W. Kamau Bell.
This season of my podcast who's with me,
I speak with two-time Emmy winner
and weirdly one of my best friends, Kevin Avery.
Everything up to that point,
build you as a comic, us going on the road,
doing Battle Mountain and Ely.
Yeah, you took me, you were one of the first people who took me on the road,
which is funny because at the time I was like,
I don't know if I like this guy.
With rapper, actor, David Diggs.
The jump off for me was Hamilton,
and it was the most popular thing in a very long time.
But it was still, for me, it was me and my friends making something dumb.
Bruce Lee's daughter and Brandon Lee's sister, Shannon Lee.
Back to your initial point of stewarding my father's legacy
and giving my energy to that.
You're lending your life to stewarding somebody,
else's life.
Listen to Who's With Me with
with W. Kumabelle on the IHeart Radio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
So like you said, never been to 20 and 10.
Guy has averaged 16, 8 and 8 at points into here.
17, 9 and 8, I believe one season.
16, 8 and 8 year he made an all-N-B8 third team,
all-de-defensive team.
That was back in 2019, 2020,
but Bidi will shift over to you.
Ben Simmons back in the league,
Sacramento Kings, his destination.
I think, according to reports,
the Kings went out to Australia,
Watched him work out with one of the pro teams out there back in August.
Thought he looked great.
Decided to take a, you know, a small vet minimum risk on him.
But what are your expectations for Ben Simmons as he returns to the league?
I think, one, he's in the perfect situation to go to the second.
No offense, but no offense taken.
You know what I mean?
But you know what I mean?
Like, they have a young squad.
They're trying to figure it out.
There are no expectations for.
or Ben Simmons.
I think in that interview, the hardest thing to really come to grips with is your injuries.
You know, when you're 100 percent, remember we talked about this the other day, you never really
plan at 100 percent once you get injured.
You're fighting for 85 at least, and you back at 75, right?
And so for somebody like that, to take a year off, it shows maturity.
Now, if he can come into that space,
As a mature number one pick, I think we know what his ceiling is, it's 16, 8, and 8.
You know, his floor is 5, 5, 5, or whatever.
Five, 5, and 5.
Right.
So I do think that he has an opportunity to reestablish his value in a different way.
And especially being with the Kings where he's not going to be, you know, he's not going to be under the microscope for if he's shooting open threes or things like that.
he can assume a better role
because you got guards that can
let it go.
So, you know, defensively,
he is a mismatch problem.
He can be versatile.
We'll see what it is.
Like, I'm excited for him
because he is in a good situation
to go get 10, 7,
you know, 3, 4 assists, something like that.
36 career three-point attempts
for Ben Simmons.
I mean, I don't even think that matter.
They don't even think that matter.
Like, don't shoot them.
Like, you know, if they leave you open, drive, like, you know,
they just call smart.
Like, I mean, that's a, that's called a high IQ.
If you can't shoot threes and they leave you open and you shoot them,
you's a dummy.
Right.
That's a dummy right there.
Like, I mean, when Rondo first came in and we'll sag off,
he just eats that space up.
Yeah.
We're going to sit at the free of the line.
He's going to go to the free throw line.
Back up again.
Back up again.
We back up a little floater, right?
So you have to be a dummy basketball player.
If you know you can't shoot and they sag off you
and you do exactly what the defense wants to do.
Right?
So the fact that he never failed forward,
let you know he does have a very high IQ.
We're talking about a guy who is a pure point guard.
But because his dominant body,
what he can do on a fast break.
You're talking about looking like Janus,
looking like LeBron James.
When people see when he moves,
they turn him into a score mentally.
But he's a pure point guard.
So if you think of him like every other point guard
that's past first,
you wouldn't think about him shooting.
But because he can get to the lane
and dunk and do all that,
you automatically say he needs the average 30,
which he should because he can.
And he's one of those guys that
with your skill set,
I would rather you try to score every single time
and when you get stopped past
versus going into the game
automatically thinking passing.
Right? So you're talking about a guy
if he's healthy
he is the mismatch.
Right? You're talking about a 610, 611 point guard,
right? Who's faster than you
who can jump, who has vision,
agile. I mean, he has everything.
I mean, the guy was in his first four years
three-time All-Star, two-time first-team all-defense, right?
All-NBA players, steals champ.
This is what he did in the first four years of his career,
rookie at a year, right?
He has better stats in his first four years than people have for the careers.
Right.
So, I mean, you are talking about a guy who can change your franchise.
Like, if you have Aikoff at the 1 and him at the point forward,
forward. Right? That's a good, that's going to be very dangerous.
I agree. You're going to have to deal with Aikov coming off screens and like you,
you got somebody who's willing to pass to a guard like that. So I just think he got a bad
rap, you know, in that playoff series against Atlanta where he just wasn't shooting.
Yeah, yeah. It was just one of those games where Tobias Harrison, once the name was,
you know, they were taking a shot. Yeah, dude, you got to put the right people around somebody
like that, when you know that
you got a 16 guy that loves
to get downhill, love to set people
up, you're getting mad at him
for diamond.
Go put some people around
that compliment him. You know, like, go put
some shooters around him.
Go put some more athletic people around
him. And he should have been
encouraged to play downhill.
Right? And as
we all get better, as we get older,
we become better shooters anymore.
I think that's the point right there, though.
So I do look at it like that.
I agree with everything you just said as far as putting the right pieces around him.
But at what point do we pay attention to the development of the individual?
When he was drafted, we put him in the same breath as a LeBron James,
all these greats, the magics, all these greats that played the game.
And like you said, in the first three years, he did what he did.
He dominated.
But after those three years, four years, we're starting to see some of the same things over and over.
it's not really a jump in his game, going to the next level.
Then you're in a situation with another number one pick with Embed and all these other.
So now this is a team, and I'm just speaking on the past as far as to why he got so much scrutiny.
But now you team these two guys up that, you know, they're doing their thing in the east.
And, you know, now the team is thinking championship.
So with that being said, how do we think championship when our main ball handle, our main playmaker isn't divisive?
developing as an individual.
We can only surround you with so much talent before we got to look at you and say,
we need you to get better as an individual.
And I more so think that was the issue.
And, you know, us as players, we all, we're all sensitive about our craft.
Like Eric Bada Ducey, I'm sensitive about my shit.
We're sensitive about our art, which is understandable.
But I think we're getting, I think it's a huge gray area when it comes to the Ben Simmons situation as far as,
Was he more offended by being scrutinized for development or was he actually being scrutinized for his way of play?
And that's the part where I'm not really sure what it was that put him in that space in the first place.
Maybe injuries, I mean, I thought it was injuries because we talked about going into a season already.
You're coming out of a season injured and you got to do rehab in the summer.
So that puts you behind for the next season.
And so, I mean, I could raise my hand and said, damn, if I would have took a year off, like, I would have been that much better to train the whole year.
And now I could have played three, four more years.
Exactly.
I think him taking that year off, he was saying, like, I am who I am.
Right.
I am who I am.
But I can't be what I need to be when I'm injured and I'm only playing 51 games.
So every time he has come back, he get injured.
Or every time he tried to get, like, it's hard to get going,
knowing that you got to come back from rehab
and everybody else is fresh, healthy, you know,
playing at a high level.
You're trying to get to that level.
And then every time you start to fall off,
like, what do you say, two back surgeries?
Yeah, back surgery.
I mean, even his rookie season, I think he had the foot injury,
had to miss the whole season.
So I think that playing to your psyche too.
Absolutely.
I may not, I don't need to be, you know,
at some point he may have said,
like, I don't need to be a superstar.
I just want to hoop.
And I think that's what I'm getting from him, you know, on the video is like, man, I'm here to hoop.
I'm more mature now.
I feel good.
And like, let him say what they're going to say.
Like, he has something to prove.
I mean, he's dealt with this since he came into the league.
But I don't think he's going to be 2010.
I mean, if he does, that's, he could do it.
No one stops him.
He can do it.
There's nobody who is going to stop him from 20 and 10 in his position.
Like, so if he wanted to just go.
go down here and score two weeks.
Well, he's technically at his, he's not at his natural position anymore.
But as I was saying, no one is stopping him, even at the power four position or three.
Who is fast enough to keep up with him?
Nobody.
Right?
So it's not like he stops himself because how he sees the game.
Yeah.
Right?
He's not in attack.
Like, he's not trying to score.
Was always in attack mode.
Rondo would score if you gave it to him.
If he has something else, he'd know what he changed.
trying to do. So he would go
as far as you let him go
to get to the bucket. Oh, you don't want to
guard me? I'll lay it up. But
Ben Simmons is not in attack
mode. He's in the
passing kick mode. When
he get the ball, he don't know what to do
with it because he's automatically
looking out. He's never looking
at the rim. If he put that attack,
you know, if he get in the
attack mode, then he's going to find itself
at the rim and then that's just, that's a development.
Right. Right.
learning out of just mental just switching it off like i remember i was told i was like yeah i need to
average like eight nine assists jim's like what does that mean i was like yeah i'm coming out you know
it's like no no no no that's not what you're gonna do you're gonna go score right and when the
defense collapse you make an easy pass exactly but if you're gonna if you're gonna think about
giving someone the ball without any action what the fuck are they gonna do with the ball right right
so ben simmons you're coming here and you you think they're gonna set them
bells up, no. You coming down here at 610, Dunkin, Dunkin, Duncan,
eventually they got to stop you. Now that guy is wide open for three.
But if you think you're going to give that guy a ball and then he's going to create another shot,
that's not his game either. So you have to understand your teammates.
So if you're sitting there attack, like a Westbrook, attacking, attacking, attacking,
then they try to block you, dump off, dump off.
He averaged 10 assists. Who do you get better? We don't know.
We don't know. But we know he had 20 some of the points worth of assists.
that has to be Ben Simmons, right?
And, you know, it's, if he's fully healthy,
I've seen him in the summer,
we all probably see him in the summer,
and he is scary, just like he was the first four years.
When it comes to shooting,
he's a better shooter in small gyms.
It just seems like that open space fucks him up.
Maybe he needs contacts.
Maybe.
Maybe he need contacts.
That's a thing.
Like, you know what I mean?
You see the room?
Maybe he needs glasses.
Yeah, yeah.
That depth.
That debt.
That's the real thing.
I can shoot it.
I can shoot this.
You put me in open space and when I see the backboard, I see like.
Depend percent.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know, and that ends up happening to some people.
And I think he has it because I've seen him in the summer.
I've watched him from the foot to the thing and I'm like, what's the problem?
Like he has perfect, like you have perfect form.
Shit looks great.
And then when that game comes, you don't even look at the rim.
So it must be the space.
for it.
You have three.
I think he's right-handed.
I think he's too focused on the three.
I think he's right-handed.
I think for him, if he
made this for it before.
If he takes kind of a Sean
Levison type of an approach
to his game offensively, I think
that betters him as an individual.
Like, even with Rondo,
and you brought him up
because a lot of teams did play him the same way
earlier on, but Rondo
eventually did become a better shooter
overall. But even
in between that, he started taking advantage.
It was still stages too. He started taking advantage
of the mid-range a little more.
He learned how to finish around the rim a little
better. Then eventually it got to
the three-point, which I considered, you know, development
over the years. But when it comes to being, like,
obviously he's so physically gifted as far as the speed,
attacking the rim, jumping high
as shit, but it's all the things in
between as far as
getting a simple go-to move on the close. You're a mismatched.
matter. Who's guarding it? So if you get a mismatch on, if you get a go-to move on both blocks,
that eliminates the three ball, in my opinion. You get a go-to move from the mid-range that eliminates
the three ball, in my opinion, and it makes you a better player as an individual. So I just think
it's too much focus on him just shooting the three when it's other areas of his game that he
could work on that would improve him as an individual.
Man, man, you back up right there, man. Can you imagine a, you back-up? I'm going to run,
Euro?
Yeah, he should be having all kind of floaters.
He should have a nice bank shot, some type of bank shot.
You got a wing bar on him on the block.
Like, what are we talking about?
Not making threes, to your point.
He has regressed, right?
Is that injury or him?
I think because of him, I think it's both.
The injury doesn't fuck them up so much.
I think it's both.
These last four years, we're judging the last four years, not realizing he's actually been hurt to the last four years.
Right.
Right.
But when you, like, think about it, when you injured and you don't feel like you can beat people and you don't feel like you can finish and you don't have, like, the things that you naturally do, you can't do, those are all layups and ducks.
You never develop a hook, a floater, no type of layup package, no elbow shot.
So now everything you're doing is like, well, I don't want to hurt the team.
So if they say I can't shoot, then I ain't going to shoot.
I'm just going to be out here passing, which is not helpful.
How about that's been to the league.
I've been to the league for 10 years now, 30 years old.
You know, like you mentioned, we've seen the summer workout videos.
It looks like a completely different player.
So I got a two-fold question where you got,
obviously you guys all hooped at a high level.
What was that transition like with the depth perception shooting in big arenas
versus high school to college to the pros?
Well, I would say this.
That dude, rich is shit.
That's practice.
Go practice at Jim, you struggle at.
Stop practicing at them little-ass gym.
And everything Gil said about the perception is a real thing.
I can think of a school like in college, we played at Syracuse.
We played in the football don't.
It's a totally different setup compared to a regular arena.
So I totally get it.
But if I know this is something I'm sure, and maybe he don't know, maybe that's the excuse.
He maybe don't know.
Maybe he don't know the reason.
But if I do know this is the reason I'm struggling,
then I'm going to go train in an environment that I'm not good at right now
to better myself in that environment.
To be shooting in these little ass gyms and thinking it's going to carry over,
obviously it's not working.
So you've got enough money to do it.
You got the resources.
He's had plenty of time to do it.
Get a routine, man.
Get a routine.
Yeah.
Like every time you see, you know, Ben Simmons working out,
it don't look like he do the same shit every time.
That way you don't have a game.
You don't have a go-to move.
He need to get a routine.
And if you have depth perception,
like the hardest thing they accept is somebody like,
man, you can't shoot because you need contact lenses.
You're like, man, fuck you.
Like half the time you're going to push back, right?
If some doctor come up and be like,
yo, you ever had your eyes check?
You ain't trying to hear none of that shit.
But like, if he had a better routine,
Then all he had to do is show up to the arena,
establish that routine of how he's shooting the ball,
where he's getting his shots.
I think for me coming in the, you know, from college to the pros,
that was the one thing every vet taught you.
Like, yo, man, like, get you a routine.
I used to be two hours before and be hooping all the way to game time.
Knowing I was only going to play 19 minutes.
And Eddie Jones was like, man, you don't even know how to warm up
before the game. I was like, what you mean? He was like, man, here, let me show you how to get
150 shots. You know, this is how I shoot my shots. So I will follow Eddie Jones all the time.
And then that, now I know what I need to work on because he's getting these shots in the game.
Ben Simmons, it don't seem like he got a routine because you should be working on these floaters,
these hooks, these elbow shots. And if you have a problem with your depth perception,
spend the money and make yourself better.
And that's why I say stars, elite players need to be hired on these teams.
Because one thing people, when you're getting drafted to a team, you don't know shit.
Right.
Nothing.
You know college workout from your college team.
You're in the pros, meaning there's no school.
Right?
This is all individual training for yourself.
So if you're coming in and you don't know none of this,
you're just coming to practice.
Whatever you see, that's what you do.
Right?
You don't know the elite comes in two hours, three hours before.
They have a routine.
They sit there taking three, four hundred shots.
You don't know that because you're coming in.
They're done already.
Then you practice a couple people stay after.
Y'all play some ones and stuff like that.
You really think you're getting better.
No.
No, that's just being an NBA player.
Elites are very different.
And if you can find an elite player
that has this routine,
you will scale up so fast.
Like going to the gym.
Mentally.
Fuck that first bus.
Because the first bus,
all y'all coming together,
y'all shooting shots,
unsurious.
Unsurious, you might get 10, 15 looks in
two hours before.
Take the cab,
the gyms by you,
you by yourself.
You get to get real shots in
You get to get, there's no interruption, nothing's messing with your mental.
I know there's plenty of times where you're working out and then someone coming there
start shooting.
Oh, man.
They fuck you up.
They get your missing.
Right.
Yeah.
Start throwing it.
Like, yeah, they're late.
They ain't got no routine, no time.
Just coming in and fucking take your ball in.
Like, so little things like that can fuck you up in the game.
So it's like the first thing you need in the NBA is a routine.
Like I used to come the night before the game.
7.30. I'll tell the staff, hey, can you please have one hoop up with the lights? I need
full lights so I can see it. Right. I need to see what the arena looks like. Full lights,
one half so I can get my shots on the arena floor. Right? We always get on practice, but on
arena floor the night before you had to do it. Oh, yeah. I'll be mad if there was a hockey game. I'll
wait to the bitch's overweight. Shoot on the eyes. I'm getting these goddamn shots.
You know, I'm getting these goddamn shots. Good job, God. Good job.
I got to wait the whole time.
It's got to get the
boss.
The coach is out of everything.
I got to get the feel of it.
So you understand what you're saying,
but how much of that is on the player?
How much is that on the team?
This is the number one overall pick.
I'm saying,
but you're bringing the number one overall pick in.
This is what I,
you need to learn.
I'm going to teach you all this shit.
Did any of them people,
what I'm saying,
is any of them people were they greets themselves?
Who told Kobe to do what Kobe was doing?
Nobody in the organization,
because they wasn't.
doing it.
Learn from Mike.
Right?
Who taught Mike?
No,
no, these guys,
these guys' greatness did it.
Fear.
And that's why I say,
being around greatness don't make you great.
Because obviously nobody mimicked
Jordan who played with Jordan,
not a fucking fade away, not of nothing, right?
Everybody who played with Hakeem,
they didn't have a dream shake,
nothing.
Right?
They didn't have nothing out of nothing.
Like, all the people may not play.
Hey, Doc, it's hard to be a one-on-one.
You know what I mean?
Like, you would think that a little bit of this room,
I'm like, somebody come in and do one of these, nothing, right?
Kobe, nothing.
Like, so what happens, and you're playing and practicing against these guys.
But if you don't have the hunger to get better, you're not.
Right.
Most people are really, they're afraid of tapping into something like that.
Because we get our routine, we like what we're doing.
We see this mother here three times.
Sometimes they're like, man, I got these holes coming over a little bit later.
I don't know if I could be at the gym like this.
Right.
Sometimes you don't know.
Workout when they come over.
Sometimes you don't know.
A lot of guys, like, they're so blindsided, they're like, yo, I'm good at this and they're
just going to get better just being a shooter.
You know, a part of like people who are one-on-ones and greats and like in that elite is like,
it's the imagination.
You can never stop.
Like, you always challenge.
You're always building, you know, you're always moving the goalpost so you can find different goals to achieve.
And so that's the difference.
So when you own the Lakers, you're like, man, this dude is, like, why is he out here?
You're shooting left-end shots, right?
It's like, not like he's going to do that in the game, and then he'll do it in the game, and you're like, you may have a better left-end, but you don't work on.
So we heard Ben Simmons say, all the people that say, question is love for the game, that that's bullshit.
he loves a game that's why he took the year off to get his mental back right
we've seen what he's capable of in his career but struggled obviously with the physical
and mental side of the game but you guys feel like this is his last chance to prove that he
belongs in the league hell yeah i mean he took a year off
nice chance i think so 28 he on a minimum he's on the minimum deal he on the minimum
deal he on a minimum and he average five five five and five five that's cool
that's what i'm saying he's on his back he's on his way up that's cool that's cool
Like, if he has another bad year, I don't see a team taking it.
What's a bad year for him?
Five, five.
Five.
But like you guys, I don't even think it's so much on the scoring side.
If you can get the rebound and assist up in defensively.
Hold on.
I know, I know.
It's got to be scored.
This ain't a situation.
At least 100.
We know at least 120 people that 5,5 is great for.
Without that year.
Not the number one pick.
Fuck the number one pick for three million.
That matters, though.
Before a bit minimum.
It matters, don't.
It matter, don't.
That's the number one thing.
But I pay on him $3 million.
We're looking at him as Ben Simmons.
We're not looking at him as a wrong.
I'm looking at $3 million.
At this point, let's say he don't hit the mark that we think he going to hit.
If I'm a team, if he just have a good year, he healthy.
But what's a good year?
Five, five, five.
Man, he doesn't show you what the floor is.
Yeah, he doesn't show you what the floor is.
So anything above that, six, six and six.
You know what I'm saying?
Five, five and five, of five.
Of course, 10 guys.
8, 6.
I like to have him.
Like, it's all to be in the coach.
That's the best thing I'm going to have on my bed.
So we're saying 8-8, 5-5-and-5.
In 22 minutes.
On the last team in the West.
Because this isn't a team that's going to have a lot of success this year.
Right.
So we're judging Ben Simmons on having a good year.
On a bad team.
That's going to get you a contender.
8-8-5-and-5 is.
Yeah, yeah.
But you look at the Kings last year.
They were asked.
But minimum.
Like the young kids would say.
but Sabonis only played 19 games.
He may be on his way on a sign and trade,
but if he actually is healthy and does play,
you got a lineup that includes Darius A-Cuff,
Zach Levine, DeAndre Hunter, King and Murray,
DeMontas Sabona.
I hate it.
I hate it.
Can they at least win 22 games?
What are you saying?
No.
I don't think Sabonis.
Dallas will win more games than them.
I don't think Sabonis fits with a A-Cuff.
He may not, obviously, may not be there for long, but we'll see.
Based off that alone, I don't think it works.
Yeah, I just...
Okay, so like, okay, so like,
Like, that don't scare, like, you know what I mean?
I thought about being scared.
That don't scare me.
I'm not saying, hey, they're going to be in the playoffs.
Like, it's going to be a lot of pressure on Aikov and Levine.
I don't think he's a lot of pressure.
If Aikov developed.
I mean, you know, he's going to have to be, he going to have to carry a lot of the scoring low,
which will be good for him in his rookie year, knowing that you're not a playoff team.
It's going to let you work out a lot of your mistakes.
So they're going to have to live with his mistakes, which should help him grow as a league guard.
You got, I mean, A-Cuff, Need Clifford, who had a good rookie season.
You got some good young guys there.
Yeah, you got a good young talent.
I don't think it fits, though.
I don't think it mesh.
Even with Keegan Murray, like, you know, he's on a, he's on a max contract.
He still hasn't made that jump as far as being that guy for the team.
And then you sign Ben Simmons, who basically plays the same position.
So that alone doesn't make sense.
Dirt cheap.
The dirt cheap.
That's a three million.
Like, there's good.
going to be teams next year contending
that are going to look and say,
man, I could use
5, 5 and 5
to get us
at least to push us to the top.
If he's starting, if he's
starting, if he's starting,
14, 6 and 5, 146.
Yeah, if he's starting. I don't think he's
starting though. He'll get an opportunity.
If he come off the bench,
you said DeAndre Hunter too, right?
I forgot he was there.
If he's 100% healthy,
like he is a health.
healthy player, meaning there's no back issues, there's no nothing, he's starting.
On a minimum.
On Sacramento.
On Sacramento.
There's nobody on that team.
Not on a good team.
If he's 100% healthy.
But that ain't all about being better.
If this guy, like I said, Keegan Murray is on a max contract.
You got your rookie.
You got DeAndre Hunter who you traded for.
You have Sabonis who.
Value is wishy-wise.
Yeah.
We have to play him to be able to get off of him.
You got to get some of his value.
And you also have Zach Levine that's in the same situation.
Final year.
So where is he playing?
Yeah, man, that's true.
That's true.
That's true.
All I'm saying.
Where is he playing?
All I'm saying.
I'm not going to play.
I'm not going to play $3 million.
I'm not playing $3 million.
Training camp looks like if he's, if he's dominating in training camp,
they would have signed him for more than $3 million.
Man, look.
He said he looked great in Australia.
Even coming off the bench.
Because he's going to take $3 million.
Yeah, even coming off the bench.
He's going to take $3 million.
Why can't he come off the bitch?
He can't come off the bitch.
Because like think about if he came off the bench for any other team that had a chance to contend, he would be a valuable asset.
Yeah.
So any team that's contending for a playoff.
Coming off the bench, you got this dude.
You could use him.
Any team.
See, I'm thinking healthy.
So I'm going to give him the benefit of doubt
He missed the whole year
The back is cool
The legs are fine
So now I got to think about
Who he is
Pass first juggernaut
That is a defensive stopper
Meaning he's going to guard
One through fucking five
I don't understand
I'm off the bitch
Y'all like when people talk about
When people was booing him
Coming off the bitch
When people was booing him in that series
They didn't realize
He was shutting Trey Young down
He was guarding Trey Young
He had to go stop Trey Young
So that means I'm guarding one through five.
That's the potential I have on I have with this guy.
You know what I mean?
For the Kings, though, but for the King.
I don't give him for what team is for.
He's not.
That matters.
First team all defense matters.
First team all defense.
You don't lose first team all defense.
The worst you can be is just a regular ass defender.
Think about it.
The worst he can be is he got he got Brooks.
He got a lot of elements to him that I don't think have been.
All the way completely tapped.
I agree.
And I think that if he was on a contender going into the year,
if he was on Toronto, if he was on New York coming off the bench,
you'd be like, damn, dude, if we can tap into anything above his floor,
we good.
Because a lot of teams don't, like the Knicks, they can use eight and six and three.
That'd have been a great one.
You know what I mean?
That have been a bad.
And they all have opportunity to sign them.
They did not.
I don't understand this.
The Lakers, they could have used them.
What?
I don't understand the sign.
Now that I really, really think about it, I don't understand the sign it.
For that team.
For the Kings to sign Ben Simmons, I don't understand it.
It's good for him, though.
You got the young rook that needs the whole year to play through his mistakes.
You got Keegan Murray who's still learning how to be that franchise guy for them.
So if you, if those two are on the floor together, then eventually Ben Simmons takes away from his development.
King and Murray is a franchise dude?
They signed them for that.
He's getting big bread.
He's making a lot of money.
I don't understand the truth.
Yeah, I don't understand it.
I don't understand what Sacramento is doing.
Yeah.
If they were contending or if they were a playoff team,
the signing would make sense.
Technically, him and Sabonis are the tallest niggas on the team.
So that's a very short game.
The tallest nigga on the 10th.
Yeah.
Along with Ben Simmons.
Okay.
Articulate.
He was born in Portland, so it's.
But he, yeah.
Who's born in Portland?
We got to talk about another situation going on with the Kings.
The biggest news to come out of King's Media Day,
wasn't from a player or a coach,
came from a group of reporters who got caught on a hot mic,
both hating and thirsting over Ben Simmons and Zach Levine.
Let's take a listen.
For Hodges.
That's how you know you made it when you could say that about yourself.
I said that's what happens when, you know,
That's being Sarah Hodges.
Oh, no, because I'm trying to transcribe it.
No, like Ben Simmons.
When Ben Simmons is, that's what comes with being Ben Simmons.
Oh, yeah.
I'm like, cringe.
Cringe.
He's like a looking dude.
I don't know.
I didn't notice, like, his skin's, like, so smooth.
I was like, damn, no tattoos.
Hold on.
I thought Jordan Poole was your type.
Leggely, I like light skins, I guess.
Jordan Poole.
What about Zach Levine then?
I look fine.
Oh.
I think his personality annoys this shit out of me, so that's what makes him not like.
He's a, right, I don't look like an eye.
I don't look like, you're getting there.
I remember when you came in, they look open.
Yeah, exactly.
You got back in his eyes.
Listen.
I'm not trying to.
His personality, fucking annoys me.
He just seems like he's hell of like a prick.
He's a fucking you typical E-C-I guy.
Yeah, I know.
He's an awful.
They're good.
He's beautiful
He's fine too
I don't know
He doesn't know
He doesn't bother me the most of him
I think I actually
I actually I think I put Ben above
Is that?
Probably because Ben over Zach
Yeah
Yeah
Because I don't like that
They're just the same age
But Ben looks away again
That's on my
Soft like he's very smooth
I was like
Dang
What's your lotion
And the skincare routine
Right the skincare regime
Ben wasn't a king
For it last year and a half
That's true.
He's not, yeah.
We should put a photo of Zai, like side by side to and like the year one day or two and see like
it's like the White House.
It doesn't age you.
Ben's been out.
Ben's been fishing.
That is not them so.
A few things first.
What's wrong with UCLA like skinned this?
Yalla boozy.
No, we're not.
We are very, very, very down to earth.
Yeah, that's good dude.
The school that produced Jackie Robertson.
Devinere.
Devin there.
Good do's.
Family guys
They're like to get a temper
to the white side.
So they're a little ophemy.
Yeah, they're a little ophemy.
We are stonestone from Bel Air Guild.
We're the fresh prince's living.
We can handle all conditions and situations.
Look how you sound.
You know the L.A. light skin guys.
That's my reporter voice.
But, yeah, a lot of things said in there.
Everybody in that.
Hating while objectifying,
sexualizing Ben Simmons,
Zach Levine said Ben takes the nod over
Zach Levine because he hasn't been with the Kings yet
in the Waring Ter that comes with that.
So one of the reporters been identified.
as Sarah Hodges, a sports anchor and reporter with CBS affiliate in Sacktown.
Zach Levine's wife, Hunter, commented on an Instagram post of the video and wrote
a great start to the season.
So, again, let's start.
He's a prick.
He's married.
A lot of hell is using the video, too, that really authenticated that it came from the Bay Area adjacent part of California.
But, Billy, we'll start with you, because you had situations during your time in Sacramento
with the media and then being out of podcast.
maybe overstepping.
A lot.
A lot.
So what's your reaction to the King's reporting crew getting caught on the hot mic, hating and thirsting
for Ben Simmons and Zach Levine?
I'm not surprised.
I've been one of the main people in the past to talk about how corrupt I felt the media
in Sacramento was, how bias, how they do a lot of shit behind the scenes that it's easy to cover
up because it's a smaller town.
It's not as much attention.
on the situation.
So this type of corrupt shit, I've seen it time and time again.
And I'm not surprised.
And hopefully, and I'll go out on the limit and say this.
If this was a male in this situation, it's a really ugly.
Way different.
And I think it should be handled accordingly as if it was a male.
Whatever the situation would have been if it was a male talking this way, however you would have handled him,
handle these females the same exact way.
But I'm not surprised.
I've had my own, you know,
personal experience as far as dealing with the, you know,
SAG media and feeling violated at the same time.
Lady by the name of Aileen Boyzin,
she was a big reporter when I played there at the time.
In my rookie season,
she just had this infatuation about my body,
even before I stepped foot in Sacramento.
She only reported about my body.
She compared me to Oliver Miller and all these overweight-type players.
So it's pretty sick.
But it was one specific day where she decided to walk up to me and lift my shirt up because
she wanted to see what my body looked like underneath my shirt.
Then she went on the right article about it.
So I remember in that moment just kind of feeling like uneasy about it, but not, I was
19-20 at the time, so I didn't necessarily know.
how to handle it or even, I'm thinking like, well, shit, maybe this is normal shit for the
NBA, you know what I'm saying?
So I remember speaking about it to the front office at the time and, you know, I got the
same answer.
I got a lot of times as far as dealing with shit and sat, ignore it.
So just to see this type of situation still happening till this day, like I said, it's
been a lot of corruption within the media, it's a lot of unprofessionalism, it's a lot
of bias, it's a lot of vendettists.
And I'm just glad that it's some light finally.
being shined on the situation and hopefully the people up top handle it accordingly and professionally.
That's all I ask. So most media days, they'll live stream. Media days, different news outlets,
reporters, whatever it may be. I think this was in between press conferences. So the live stream
still on, the mic still hot. Yeah. And you kind of get to see what the media is like.
You know, when they don't think the cameras are rolling, they don't think that they're being
recorded. But BD, listen to that situation involving some of those.
King Sports reporters.
Man, it just took me to Bart O'Neill,
Shang Mason and Devi featuring Bart O'Donel,
you out of pocket.
You got to listen to that song.
They way out of pocket, way out of pocket.
How can you be sitting that close?
Sarah, whatever your name is, Sarah, you out of pocket, baby.
Like rabbit ears.
You know what I mean?
You got out of pocket.
But Sacramento is out of pocket, right?
You know what I mean?
Sacramento been out of pocket.
The entire city.
Yeah, it's like they haven't done with the, like the Warriors used to be out of pocket
as an organization.
Like, damn, like we got to go here.
It was like one of them teams, one of them cities where you was like, man, I don't want
to even want to go up there.
Like, why do they have a team?
You know what I mean?
It's like they don't, they don't appreciate and they have no kind of control.
It's kind of like a wild, wild west.
There's always some weird shit coming out of Sacramento.
You know what I mean?
Or some type of gimmick.
Like they had the beam.
And it was like, man, we beaming up to the, like, man, everything is.
You don't like the beam being lit.
Like the beam.
It's just everything is like a come and go kind of situation.
And there's no kind of stabilization at the organization.
So when somebody like, when things like this happen,
and you got players who are coming,
into the season with one-year deals.
It's like, man, this shit is a circus.
Like, I'm cool.
He had to go through a circus.
You got coaches, changes.
You got the owner lying to you.
You know what I mean?
Because he's going to lie to you.
He's going to lie.
Bro.
He's going to lie.
You know what I mean?
Owners be lying.
He'd be lying to the media all the time.
Like, every time we think something about to crack off in
Sacramento or they're about to
ask somebody or somebody about to stay.
It's like, man, you know, it's like Sacramento going to be an NBA 2.0.
Like, man, I like to see it.
Like, where the damn pyrotechnics and, you know, where the face ID scan?
They ain't had none of that.
They have them a beam.
Man, they got a beam.
She was a purple light into the sky.
And they got a beam.
And my kids can do that.
You know what I mean?
They like, they can do that off the top.
They light, okay.
From the crib, I'd be telling them, don't do it.
You know what I'm saying?
So you, man, go on, Kings, man.
Not, for real.
But they do got new people, but you got to clean all that up.
You got to have a certain class and a certain standard.
Now, you got the right coaches, you got the right people there.
You got to let them rock.
You got to let them rock.
I'm glad you said that.
And to piggyback off of that, I do think they have started to put the right
people in place.
Yeah.
Shout out to Scott,
Scott Perry.
I think this is a guy that's shown in his,
throughout his career that he can write the ship.
He knows how to put things in place to become successful.
You got Christy, you got Woody.
On the outside looking in,
I think they are now,
obviously it's a long path,
but I do believe they're now walking on the right path.
Starting with Scott Perry.
Yeah, but it starts above Scott Perry.
It does.
You know what I mean?
But hopefully.
We got to have,
We got to have some type of order.
We got to have some type of order.
I agree.
It always sounds.
With a vision.
You know what I mean?
So it's like, okay, are we going to let Scott rock?
Because if Scott can do what he's supposed to, there's freedom with the coaching staff,
you let that unit exist.
Now, if you come in and say, all right, the Sacramento King is going to be, you know,
we're challenging for a playoff.
And, you know, it's like you're putting a lot of unnecessary pressure.
on players, on coaches, on GMs, and that's why you got a lot of turnover, but it starts with the laws.
You know what I mean?
And it's a lot of, you know, just, they just be saying shit.
You know what I mean?
It's like, hey, man, we're going to challenge Florida playoffs.
And it's like, man, you don't even have a right makeup.
But now they do.
You got Scott Perry, you got a good unit.
Let them rock out.
You let Mike Brown go.
For whatever reason you weren't rocking with Mike Brown and you couldn't.
figure all how to piece all this shit together is what I'm saying.
And so now you got the right ecosystem.
The executives, man, y'all go handle the hot mic.
Y'all make sure, you know, Sarah get checked from CBS and clean all this shit up so our team can feel safe and they can feel like, man, we support all of our players in this community.
It sounds like she wants to support the players to me.
We've been to college and we know what recruiting sounds like.
That's what it sounds.
If I'm light skin in the NBA.
Sarah don't like you, dog.
You're too dark.
I know.
I'm saying, if I'm light skinned in the NBA, I want to go to Sacramento right now.
Because this is, this is, she's letting it be known.
The dude next year said, I thought you liked light skin.
I do.
He didn't want to bother me the most.
Yeah, yeah.
He's too invested.
Oh, this nigger with the, he got smooth skin.
That's work.
That's road work.
Like butter.
That's road work.
In-house.
Don't even got to pay for it.
In-house road work.
Being Simps has got three million and potential work.
Cool.
You know,
you know, I don't know what y'all talking about.
She didn't say nothing I didn't like.
Oh, shit.
He looks smooth, looking in shape.
You're doubling back and cracking that.
We need to have a sit-out.
You need to explain to me.
You need to explain to me.
You need to apologize.
in my face? Is that one of those?
Over coffee?
Yeah. Hey, Zach Levine, I get
I get his wife. That's a threat.
That's an immediate threat. What is she a
bugger wolf done?
We don't know what she looks like.
There's some lonely cities out there.
Okay. She got friends.
There's some lonely cities out there.
You know, you might have to take one.
Everybody.
It sounds like,
listen, if you're hitting them right spots,
she's deprived.
She might write some good shit about you.
You got me sweating, dude.
We might be, hey, you never know.
You never know.
You never know that.
But like, hey, man, reporters are human too.
You know what I mean?
People are human.
That's the other side of it.
Yeah, it's like, if there was a hot mic on the bus convoy or the locker room,
obviously, whatever you guys are talking about.
I mean, it shouldn't nothing happen to her.
I don't think nothing should happen to her.
I just think that.
It's Sacramento.
I don't agree with that part.
Something should happen.
Suspended or.
If it's a male speaking that way about a female athlete,
whatever.
She what?
I'm trying to think like, okay, so.
Our research team apparently is,
Sarah, we will accept the apology.
Come on Gills Arena.
If we were in a day, okay, so we wanted to be WMBA.
I'll coffee and apologize to Ben said it again.
I said, if we were in a safe space because we are reporters.
They called us on the mic talking about one of these ladies' looks and their body and their skin and all that.
How was it being received?
Okay, say first, they will be offended.
They will be offended first.
I'm offended.
And then I'm pretty sure Ben Simmons not offended.
I am.
I'm afraid of, I'm going to be offended.
I would not like to be sexualized on media day.
I mean, she called him a, what did she say?
He was a, no.
It was some dis-in-ins.
But also said of cringe and Zachman.
That's Zach Levine.
He's married.
But said Ben Simmons was cringe.
I think one of the times.
Yeah.
So what all compliment?
Gene was cringe.
Gil.
It's like, you don't know me.
How are you going to question me?
She said,
You don't even know me.
You just want off of what you get.
Says Zach Levine was cute, but it was a prick and was annoying.
And these were different voices, too.
That was the cringe of Zach.
No, so I think one of the best seven came out of crin.
She does not put Sacramento in a safe space.
If Jordan Poole is single, he can't wait to get to Sacramento.
He can't wait to get anywhere right now.
But shout out to the light skated community.
Oh, man.
See, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's, you didn't, you didn't, you didn't, you didn't, you didn't work the way you were supposed to work the media.
Yeah, I ain't never been no ass kiss.
All right, now, soon as she lift your shirt up, soon as she lived your shirt up, you're a stole on.
You should have, you should have, you know, you know what you should have, you should have, you know what she looked like, you would have stolen her too.
But she was writing articles, so she wrote a lot.
You should have took all hippies.
You should have took all your sweat and rubbed in on her face.
You want to see what that looked like this.
All my money's worth.
She's got my money's worth.
I don't like with this conversation.
No, I'm just saying.
It happens, man.
I played the media game, so.
But I agree, darling.
But you're inside the King's facility.
This is media day.
So I understand both sides of it.
Get rid of the circle.
Bro, if I came in there looking fine, my fucking, that ain't my problem.
I came in there.
What kind of lotion you wear?
This is a good one.
Like, like, if the ladies want to talk about me because I'm looking fine, why should I be offended?
It wasn't just that, you?
Huh?
You shouldn't.
I'm new here.
I'm new here.
If you heard that.
She said, I look younger than the last life, kid, man.
This is a positive place for me.
I get it.
I get it.
I was getting booed.
Right here, right here, I'm a sex symbol.
This is like a great-ass play.
She's going to always smile what you said about it.
I got one on my son.
That's all I saw.
You know, I always smile when she say my name, I get it.
It's marketing.
Let's, give.
That's why you was the Abachi, dude.
Abotchi commercial marketing.
You know what I mean?
It's marketing.
But back to you, Boogie.
Like we talked about during your time with the Kings dealt with certain situations with the media,
obviously not a lot of, you know, some positive, but also ones that, like you said, hit pieces, negative stuff.
Does this situation expose a larger issue?
issue with the sports media and their inability to be unbiased?
A hundred percent.
And it's the fact that this guy hasn't played, and I'm specifically speaking on
Ben Simmons.
He hasn't played one game.
It's his first day in the city.
And we already have a reporter pre-judging a guy.
She's already determined what her feelings are towards a guy.
Obviously, she thinks he looks good and he's an asshole at the same time.
So when you think about it like that, this is exactly how they go into writing these
articles however they feel about you personally
and they may not even have a real experience
with you. It's just something that they feel
from afar. They can now go write
whatever article they want and this
is now the public perception of you
because this one individual or this
group of individuals or the whole
feels this way. And it could
be 100% false or it could be
100% true. But the whole issue
is if you're going to
be a professional in your field
it has to be done without bias
and that's more so I believe
what athletes are looking for
from these reports. And I think that's why
it's also such a burn bridge
between athletes and reporters because
of situations like this. They're able
to do their job based off personal feelings
but we as
athletes are supposed to be professional
and no matter how much shit they talk
about us, no matter how much they bash
us, dog our families out.
We're supposed to show up smiling and happy
and respect these people. Keep answering their
questions. And keep asking, and put money
in their pocket. Why they take money out of
It's a crazy, it's a, it's crazy, yeah, it's crazy, it's crazy.
Yeah, they got too much power.
Yeah, but we get paid to be more professional than them.
They get paid to be professional.
Yeah, but we can't pay more.
It's two different jobs.
That's not my fault.
I know, I know that, but.
Gil, they can't average 20 and 10 in the league.
The media used, there used to be like,
a certain type of level of class you would carry yourself,
even if you were good or not.
good or not even if you had a difference of a pen like you if there was a certain type of like
class right not saying that it was biased or unbiased but at least it was like a prestige of being
a like reporter or being now anybody can do that shit all you know anybody with a camera that's why you got
that's why you got to be more professional than before because now you know everything
is clickbait that you you know everybody's
writing from feelings.
What if I don't want to play your game, though?
Then you're doing the same thing as they're doing.
It's feelings, right?
Like, you write something about me?
I don't like you no more.
Right?
I don't like you no more,
so I don't want to do an interview with you.
It's no difference to them.
You don't want to do an interview with me,
so I'm going to always write negative.
So it's the same game that both teams are playing.
But they got the pen.
But the difference is they have the power
because, like, Boogie said,
they can cost you millions of dollars.
You can still do the right thing
and they still write a hit piece about you.
Yeah.
So why should I play that game if I'm getting negative results anyway?
Because it's like this.
All they want is the story, right?
They want to stand out.
They want to interview.
They want this.
They want the athlete to like them or dislike them.
Either way, give me the energy, right?
Because I'm competing here.
So I don't need you on the negative side of me.
So then I need to go out my way to make you like me, right, to give you an exclusive,
give you some bullshit, like give you some funny takes, right?
Because I have to deal with, one, the world in their opinions.
I don't want the people in-house doing it, right?
So I have to protect the in-house, so I have to be nicer to these people because I got to see them every day.
So these are last people I want as enemies because now what they're doing?
searching, asking, what is he like outside?
That's what the inside do.
So I need to be more professional than them
and then treat them, treat them like a real,
so I got to keep them closer to them.
You got to use the media as an athlete,
to your advantage and control your own narrative,
whether you like it or not, right?
So you've got to play this diplomatic, you know,
you got to be a representative of yourself every time you show up.
Right.
So don't send, don't send BD in there.
I'm going to press everybody out.
Send Baron Davis in there because he's filtered.
Right.
And then whether they like me, whether they don't, you're going to do when I asked you to do for me.
Because I gave you that.
I gave you the favor you needed.
I gave you the opportunity now when I want to circle back.
and say, yo, I'm doing something in the community,
y'all got to now flip that and do something positive for me.
So the problem is they'll go,
and anybody can influence anybody now.
So now when the media do have them feelings and be set,
it's almost like you're getting set up
because what if the team want to,
what if the team want to add to, you know,
like that's what's happening.
Now you ain't bawling.
oh, the team want to say something
or somebody closer to the team.
Now your value
decreased because it's personal, right?
And that person is easy
kind of coerced into making sure
like you don't make it.
Right?
And I think that that's the most unfair point
because there is no hierarchy
and media.
Like anybody can do this shit.
So it's not like somebody,
it's not like any, you know,
it's like who do we trust?
They don't answer it anymore.
Like the biggest names in sports is like, we don't even trust them anymore.
Right?
The biggest pens in sports, like we barely trust them because they got to get down to your point in competition on a, you know, a dog-e-dog world.
And you've got to be fishing for bullshit.
Yep.
And you got to put that out faster than the next person.
Well, yeah, yeah.
Sufficient discourse on that particular topic remains a scene what punishment will be handed down as a result of it.
but BD you talked about players leveraging the media, using the meter to their advantage.
Bring us to our next topic. Spurs reached the finals.
Sooner than expected in year three of the Wimby era.
As a former number one pick, put the league on notice.
He'll be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
Wimby, unanimous defensive player of the year finished top three in MVP voting,
making his first all-NBA team.
He averaged 25 points, 12 rebounds, three assists,
league leading 3.1 blocks in the regular season.
Also impressive in his first postseason, average in 30 years.
23 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, four blocks per game.
His 524 total points, second most for a player in their NBA playoff debut.
First player with 50 plus blocks, 25 plus May threes, and one playoff run.
Set an NBA playoff record with 12 blocks against the Wolves for his first postseason triple double.
Dethrown the thunder and route to winning the Western Conference Finals, MVP.
But him and his squad, like we know, tricked off NBA finals.
They led by double digits in each of those five games still found themselves on the wrong side of a gentleman's sweep.
So, Aileen reflected on the finals loss and how him and his squad are using that as motivation heading into this season.
I've had a few sleepless nights, of course, no, maybe not sleepless nights, but hard to find sleep sometimes or hard emotions, you know, hunting sometimes.
But there's just a point where you accept that you have to go through it and you have to feel,
feel all of it.
And we don't want, we don't want to hide from anything.
So, you know, we're going to face these emotions, face, you know, the reality that we have
100 games to play.
And 100 plus, you know.
And this is the reality of it.
We're in a great spot.
We're very hopeful, very ambitious, and we're ready.
Does that loss in the finals last year?
Is that the ultimate motivation for this season for you?
I couldn't imagine a better motivation.
Can't imagine a better motivation.
Spurs Corps spent some of their offseason together, training with Deeran Fox in Houston.
Wimby had several of his teammates pull up to France this summer as well for workouts in his homeland.
Their entire core returns for the season along with new addition Tobias Harris.
Now they look to build on their breakout season.
Prove they're the new sheriffs in the town that is the Wild Wild West.
So Gil, we will start with you.
expect from a motivated wimby and spurs team this season?
Just like that next jump, which is the mental part of it, because the way they lost,
when you think about winning a chip and you was up every single game by double digits
and you lost those and that cost you the championship, that has to hurt really bad.
So when you're thinking about coming to this next season, you should be on kill mode, right?
This should be, this should really start off, they should start off the season on kill mode.
All of them.
The way, the way they ended that season, they should come into the beginning of the season,
trying to tear everybody's head off.
If they're not into that, if they're not on that level, they're not making it.
Because there's no way you lose like that and you do feel comfortable.
Right.
Right.
Like, when you left every game and y'all standing like, hey, man, if we were just closed out, if we would have just take a little bit better shots, we wouldn't have, you know, got walked down every fourth quarter.
Right.
You know, it's like every game, they can taste, they can taste the victory every single game into losing.
Those are heartbreaking moments.
And this, last year should have.
been the motivation to Wimby to just
dominate this year.
When we're talking about the score, I think before
last season, Wembe said if they finished top six in the
West, he would consider that a success. They finished
second in the West, 62 and 20,
got to the finals first time, I think so
2014 or whatever it may be.
But now the goal's changed, right?
The goal's changed. Our goal was here.
You went to the championship and you lost
the way you did. Right? That
right there has, that should have
put, you know,
the speed in your back, right?
I mean, he has, his ceiling is so high, man,
where he can just improve in all aspects of the game.
So I'm really intrigued and see what he worked on this summer.
Right, I want to see what he worked on this summer that he's going to bring into this year.
Right.
But those are one of those games where, you know, the great players,
they would have watched, they would have watched that last series to just say,
all right, this is how they played me.
This is, you know, these are the champs.
If I can mentally get over this, no one can stop me.
Yeah.
I mean, you look at Winby in the Spurs squad.
Winby, year four, obviously very articulate,
has a great relationship with the media,
just by some questionable plays throughout last season,
elbows, some road stuff,
but still media darling.
I think it wants to be the villain,
but the media's not allowing that.
Obviously, everybody pushed for him to be the face of the law.
I'm trying to be the French villain,
but they're not rolling.
But you look at him saying he had a lot of sleepless nights
after that finals lost, but couldn't think of a better motivation
than losing in those finals to not elevate them season.
What do you expect from Wimby in the Spurs now in year four of the Wimby era?
I expect him to have an MVP season.
He knows what it feels like.
He's been to the top of the mountain.
He didn't get all the way to the peak.
You're sitting at home and he's falling asleep
and it's like, damn if I would have.
to make that layup,
if I would have stole that pass,
if I wouldn't have turned the ball over.
Like that was the margin of error
in that series.
So like him being haunted by it,
saying he'd been haunted by it,
you only hear that from the greats.
And there's a pattern,
you know, there has been a pattern
over the history of the league
where, you know, in order to be great,
sometimes you have to be beat to the top.
And I think he has this motivation of I know what this means.
I know what home court advantage means.
Everything is valuable to him.
And similar to what Gil said, I want to see what he developed this something.
Right.
Right.
I would love to be like, yo, he has a go-to move.
He got a go-to spot.
He got a counteroff the go-to move.
Right.
But his go-to move should be so incredible.
It should be automatic.
He should figure out, I have to learn how to close these games out on the offensive end.
And so it would be great to see, like, what his maturation is, you know, learning from a situation where, you know, you got so close, right?
You got so close, and it was really, you lost because you, it was, I felt like it was an immaturity.
It was like an immature game.
And they never...
It's just like practice playing against the second team.
You know what I mean?
It's like, they're kicking your ass.
They kicking your ass.
And then all of a sudden, come, it's like, play another quarter.
And you're like, yeah, we got you.
And like, get up out of here.
And so, like, when you're young, like,
you're always going to get off to a good start.
You've got the fight.
Now figure out how to have that alpha mentality
that we were talking about.
Right.
How am I going to put myself in a position to make everybody better and to be able to close?
Because they had it, right?
It was just the Knicks had a better understanding of how to catch them and close out the game.
And that energy moved towards the Knicks.
They got to garner, like kind of garner momentum.
Right?
They let momentum like get out of hand.
Everyone's immaturity.
Even the coaches.
Like I've seen greatness from me.
where there would be something that happened with Kat and Wembe,
and Kat got the foul on Wembe,
and then the team was smart enough to hurry up and look and challenge it.
Every challenge they did with the Wembe and Kat reversed every single time,
Wemby got to keep his foul, Kat got the foul,
Kat had to sit.
And if they didn't challenge it, Kat stayed, Wimby had to sit.
So it seemed like they were.
very smart there.
The inexperience to me is
not understanding
the killer you're facing.
You played
three quarters
looking at him.
Think in the fourth quarter
he was the same person.
Not understanding, hey,
in the fourth quarter,
the Popeye takes the spinach.
Yeah.
Right?
Yeah, he takes a spittance.
You know what I mean?
Like, this is a whole different beast.
So unless you played this game at a very high level, you wouldn't know what type of man he was about to turn into to understand what type of game playing you needed this stop.
Yep.
Right?
There was no way that you go after you lost the first one that way, there was no way you go into it saying, we're going to play him straight up.
He's the only super villain on the court.
Double him, triple him.
Make Josh Hart do it.
He's trained.
They're all trained to give him the ball at the end of the game.
You're not trained to take over at the end.
Let them second guess the game.
Let them get it and then look and then see where the fuck is Brunson at
because that's what they're known to do.
They're known to play the game first three quarters without them.
And then in the fourth quarter, Brunson.
Everything goes to Brunson.
Brunson.
I would have been trapping them.
You know, it was the same thing that I was telling Dame
when they was playing Blazers.
I said, hey, listen, every time you go up like 18, 15, 20,
double clay.
I said, Clay is the only person that when the game
when the game is
unreachable, he's the only
one that has no thought process
of a score. Right. Right? So
he's not going to have no conscience. He's going to
shoot, shoot, shoot, and he's going to be the one
that brings him back because he doesn't have the concept
of we're down, or, like so that's the guy
you want to attack. You don't have to worry about
Steph. Steph, you have to worry about
when the game starts getting to like four or three
because it's the hero time. That's when his name
gets called. We're down three. I'm hitting
three to tie it up and then I'm going to come down and he's going to shoot the next one,
weaned up three, you called the timeout, that step.
So you have to understand the two people.
And that's when they was playing them in every game.
Every game, Clay.
It was up by 18.
Clay comes back, just firing.
So you guys talking about Wemby, lack of experience.
So before game, one of the NBA finals last season did an interview with Malika Andrews from ESPN.
He said the lack of experience is the strength of us because we could do impossible stuff
because we don't know it's impossible.
but now he knows what's possible
unless it wasn't impossible.
But obviously I'm saying all the right things
and had never been through those experiences before
is my point.
Now you've had that experience,
been within a couple of games away,
a win in the championship.
So how is that now help him reassess
and now come back this season
ready to actually get that trophy?
I think he's,
I think this season he's moving
with a lot more purpose
and I'm basing that off,
you know, the press conference.
You know, as a team,
You will accomplish what you accomplished last year basically no expectations.
So you're going to win 62 games, no expectations.
So now everybody's expecting you to be at worst, a top two team,
and at worst, conference finals.
So I like his message.
And one thing I've learned about this kid is usually when he says things,
he's not bullshit.
Facts, facts.
He's French, boogie.
Facts, facts.
I had the luxury of, you know, visiting the same temple that he trained at last year.
I was there a couple of weeks ago.
Oh, really?
You was out there with the monks?
I was out there with the monks, too.
I didn't go through what he went through, but, you know, a little bit.
Okay.
So, you know, and I started asking questions.
I'm like, so exactly, you know, what all was Wendy doing?
And they showed me this one specific path.
And this was more impressive than me than any of the other shit.
Like, don't get me wrong, that shit was hard.
But this part was impressive.
and it was this path through, like, this forest
that led all the way up to the mountains.
It was probably four-mile height,
and there's nothing before us.
So I'm a type of dude,
whenever I go somewhere, first thing I'm asking,
what's the dangerous animals I need to work?
We out here in this forest, like, y'all got cobras.
Come in the woods.
They're like, yeah, we got cobras and wooed-de-woo,
and I'm like, oh, shit.
So I'm all, you know, I'm...
Anacondas and all that, you know, all that type of shit.
So I'm asking questions.
I'm like, what all did exactly do?
I'm like, was he doing the same things I was doing?
He was like, oh, yeah, he was doing that.
But before he ever got started in his day, he would wake up four in the morning,
and it's pitch black.
There's no flashlights, none of that shit.
He's walking this path all the way up to the top of the mound.
So I'm, to me, that, and it would take you guys to see the pattern.
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
So for me, I'm like, this is,
This is every day before he starts training.
So for me, it kind of put things in the perspective as far as how serious this dude is about his career, his craft, getting better, not only physically but mentally as well.
So like I said, I see this interview and I'm thinking when it comes to the team, you have no choice but to follow, obviously, your leader.
And now what I hear now is somebody talking with expectations now follow.
So I expect a big leap this year.
It does go back to what these two guys said as far as his individual development.
And I think that's more so about obviously getting a go-to move.
I would like to actually see him simplify his game a little more.
I don't need you doing tween, twine crosses, maybe just a tween to the shot.
You know what I mean?
But also what I mean by simplifying the game is, well, not only simplifying the game,
I want him to embrace the big man part of his game.
Yes.
Because sometimes I feel like he's on the floor and he forgets he's the biggest dude on the floor.
You know what I mean?
So what I mean by simplifying is if you catch it on the block, sometimes you can just turn around and shoot it.
No jab step, no queen, queen, no step back, literally turn around.
Hook shot.
Shoot it.
Nobody can contest it.
Nobody can match up with him height-wise.
You can't contest it.
They have a hard time contesting Kevin Durant.
We're talking about 7-5 on top of being 7-5.
You're jumping on the, nobody's contesting it.
So you got that.
And then also, as a go-to move, just getting a little simple half-hook.
You don't have to go be Corrine, skyhooks and all that.
Bump, bump, bump, half-hook.
I think it's unstoppable.
Like I said, there's nobody that can match up with that.
So, I agree, dude.
Based on, you know, them having expectations now,
I do hope and wish that, you know, he's developed on his own as an individual.
Obviously, this team means business.
You got guys training all offseason.
They're going to France.
They're going to Houston.
It's really cool to hear Dearen Fox is holding training camp.
Obviously, he wants to get better.
So this is just showing me a team with expectations now.
So I expect them to take that leap.
And like I said, at worst, they're second in the west.

So a little bit more on Wimby, eligible for that 30% Supermax worth $303 million over five years.
Chose the 25% max at 252 million.
So voluntary leaving 50 million on the table about 10 million per year over the next five years.
Give that San Antonio roster flexibility.
So after getting the deal done, he tweeted,
First family, I'm here to stay, whatever it takes.
Obviously, like you mentioned, this is a man who knows whatever it takes.
Doing those hikes, I think he did a hike, like four and a half mile hike,
dribbling a basketball.
It was supposed to take eight hours he did into four hours.
In addition to the other hikes, he was done out there with the monks.
But just things like that.
When you look at Wimby overall, what's Wimby's next step in controlling the game with his gravity?
Simplifying the game.
There's little things where, you know, in the playoffs and I go.
but it's just more new school than old school,
where they put a small on you
because you play a small ball game, right?
Where there's no way in no game
that you can put a small on a big
that actually understands the game.
You couldn't say, all right, Gil, go guard Tim Duncan.
Tim Duncan's smart enough to know,
well, if they put him on me,
well, he's going on. If I try to bump,
he's going to take a charge.
So let me turn him face.
All right, little guy.
I'm just going to shoot over you.
Right?
So Wimby needs to understand you need two, two different games.
Game versus smalls, game versus your bigs.
Right?
When they're putting the small on you, get to the mid, that mid free throw line like you do.
Get it.
Turn and face.
Turn in face first.
Like stop trying to come and play this.
Turn in face, sit here like this.
Right?
Sit here.
Right.
What they're going to do?
You can pass them here.
Right.
You can shoot from here.
You can just sit here like this at the 7th.
And boom.
Now you get the big on you.
Take him off the dribble because he can't guard you like that.
Like you just have two simple,
two simple regimens of games.
And he doesn't have it.
Like if he put a small on you,
he's going to move before anything.
He's going to get it behind here.
Try to already turn him go and slip and fall and be small.
Then he got to come out of the height.
When you can just stay,
just stay big.
So basically what you're saying,
he's so skilled and has,
so many things he can do on the floor.
Depending on his matchup, his skill set should change by game.
By game.
If I got a super athletic big that can run up and down with me,
I might take him to the block and slow my game.
I got a slower, bulkier big.
I may take them out on the floor.
I got a small guard of me from a free throw line extended.
I may take them to the elbow, just shoot over the top.
So everything he said as far as him picking his spots,
picking this matchups, I think it all goes into
individual development.
And not saying he has to
add more, but actually
simplified. Yeah, I say
like when I think of Wemby, I think of
like the attack of a 70-foot woman.
Right? Like at one point
we was all the same height hanging out at the
burger joint. Now you're 70 feet.
You're still trying to hang out and sit on
one of the burger joints. You know what I mean?
And for Wimby, it's almost like
you are
guard, you hang out with guards, you can do things that guards do, but you got to realize that
you got to go get in a bigger barn house where you can sleep and not be sleeping in somebody,
you know, somebody backyard trying to squeeze, squeeze in as a seven-sit. Like, you're bigger
than everybody. Get comfortable being bigger than everybody. Go to where big people
hang out and be comfortable. You can do all of guard stuff. You can go to the party, dance,
with him, all that, but you need, to your point, you need to know when to do it.
Get comfortable being big.
You seven, six.
And then San Antonio, the coaching staff, y'all got to make the movie.
Y'all got to speed the movie up.
Because no way this 70-foot person should be hanging out at a burger joint trying to put
on roller skates.
Like, it don't fit.
Right.
Go put Wimby closer to the basket, run actions closer to the basket.
run actions closer to, run actions from the elbow with him.
Right.
And so he's one dribble away.
Right.
He's one dribble away from the basket.
I remember playing with Golden State.
Nelly was like, man, my goal is to get you underneath the free throw line.
Because I know, like, you don't understand, but like, you're way better with, you know, having a live dribble.
And one dribble is harder for guards to stop you.
It's harder.
But a double team to get there.
you can actually make plays, you know, from this elbow.
So it started to become like a place that I would run to.
Right?
Because now it's like, okay, I got the elbow.
I got a corner shot.
I got a face up from the wing.
I got action.
And now I'm comfortable.
So I can go right where I'm comfortable.
And now everybody else got to adjust to me.
And I think for him, he's trying to showcase all the shit he can do.
And then when you get the ball and it's like, all right, go get some.
something, it's like, man, I got, like the damn slot machine is just, all right, what combination,
and you don't have a, you don't have a it.
And on top of that, thinking about the playoffs last year, it was conversations about, what is
Wendy, 23, 24.
We were having conversations about him being tired in the playoffs.
And I think part of that fatigue was doing so much just to get to a time shot or a dunk
or, like, that's why it goes back to simplifying the game.
And you made a point earlier where these organizations need to bring in these superstar players, former superstar players.
And I'm thinking about him simplifying this game.
And I'm like, Lamarcus Aldrich played in San Antonio.
Why isn't he working with this guy every single day about turning around and shooting?
Or bump fade, bump turnaround.
They don't go for it.
You're able to go middle, go to jump.
You got Tim Duncan over there.
You got Tim Duncan.
You got Powell Gassar.
You had all the skills that played for San Antonio.
You have all of their skills.
Yeah.
And he's like a combination of all of them.
And I might be wrong because I don't know what's happening behind the scenes,
but as much as they show all that,
they show him working with Jamal Crawford.
So I should see.
That makes sense.
Right.
We see that shit.
I should see him working with Lamarckis.
We want to see less of that.
Hakeem, I mean, he's worked with him too good.
You know what I mean?
You want to see less of that.
Crosby working with Akeem?
I was fine with him Wimby working with him.
No, that's fine.
The game is great.
With Wimby?
With Wimby?
Wimby working with a Kemp is great.
You got footage of it?
No, they do not have the footage of me saying anything bad about him working because he has the footwork.
I said, Yon is working with Akeem.
Because Yonis don't have footwork, so that's a wasted $50,000.
If you have footwork, if you have footwork, if you have footwork,
working, you understand your feet.
You need to go see that. Working with someone who can elevate the skill is great.
But if you don't have the basics, you're just throwing $50,000 away because you're not
going to use it. I do it for 25. I got, I got, I got, I got, I got, I got, I got one of the sickest
post-game footwork. Am I wrong? I do it for 25. Now, time is past. I get you right for a
king. Come on over. Hold on, yeah. The BD. has been over. Has time, time is past. Was I
right about Janus wasting 50,000?
Yonis, I get you right for.
He doesn't have none of the moves.
They didn't stick because he doesn't have the basic knowledge of feet.
He doesn't have the patience either.
To do what Akeem does, you have to have patience and you can't.
Like Yannis game is more of like an anxious game.
So he plays with a lot of force.
So like, you know, anxiety, like striking fear.
Akeem was more like tactical.
Tactical.
Let me get the ball.
Let me slow that.
If you slow Yonis down, you don't have.
have a go-to move, right?
If you put him with his back to the basket, he know he can back you down and bully you.
So it's like, Janice wasn't, maybe now, he should see a team or something, but you got to
be patient to understand that footwork is your ultimate, you know, advantage.
And then you also got to be kind of disadvantaged, you know, as an athlete, right, to be able
to go and work on your footwork.
Like you're a combination of, like, great footwork,
power, and skill, like the same type of, like the same type of...
An anomaly, if you were.
Yeah, the same type of thing that Wemby, like, Wembe needs to go.
That's why I made the point about picking...
Each game is a different matcher because early in my career,
I ran into a lot of those same problems.
I'm like, man, I'm about to get him everything the night.
Yeah.
And it was sometimes harm me because the guy matching up with me,
me playing a certain type of way
would play to his advantage.
So over time I would learn
I'm paying attention in film,
I'm paying attention to the scatrimport,
all right, who I got tonight,
all right, I'm working for the mid-posts
and I'm giving them all blockwork tonight.
Oh, I got such a set,
I got Bigfeller tonight, I'm taking them out on the wing,
I'm a dancing.
It's psychological, right?
It's psychological, and that's what I'm saying.
Like that, when the jackpot thing,
the casino slot machine hit,
Like, he, it's too many things that's going on in his brain.
And the light, and he's a showman.
So it's like, man, slow your brain down.
Figure out, like, all right, here's my one move.
Here's move two.
This is what I do over here.
This is what I do over there.
And work on that.
So when the game starts to slow down and you needed to slow down
when you up 18 playing against the Knicks,
it's like, hold on, man.
I know how to slow this one.
Man, they should have been in the post.
They should have been in the whole time.
They should have been in the bone.
Yeah, you got guards like that that can attack.
Now you're starting to say, okay, I'm good if they don't double teaming.
I'm good if they double team.
But now the value of Basel, Champini, Harper, right?
Now you can really start to elevate their value because, you know, like,
I don't necessarily need to take the shot.
I just need to be in this spot.
If I get the ball in this spot, everything is going to, like, so I think his, he has to become a closer, and a closer has to think about all of that, right?
But you got to establish where are you going to view the last four minutes of the game, right?
What's the spot that, like, here's my view.
Here's my point of view.
Yeah, I got to guard me from this point of view.
And all the great scores have it, you know, mellows.
Everybody got a spot.
Thank you.
