Hello and welcome to Girls Gone Canon reads, A Song of Ice and Fire,
Episode 263, Dineris 1 in A Dance with Dragons.
I'm one of your hosts, Chloe.
And I am another one of your hosts, Eliana.
Whoever thought we would get here, not me.
This is so fucking weird.
Isn't that crazy?
Isn't it weird?
We're almost done with this.
And then we'll be at our last POV.
And as I was explaining to my partner, what you and I say, that George has the opportunity.
Did he's so funny.
He's the craziest thing right now.
He could be really cute about it.
He could just drop it real subtly for us.
George, please.
He comes and he drops it here on the podcast.
He comes on and he's like,
everyone, guess what?
That's not even how he sounds.
I don't think I can...
It was kind of cute, though.
Cute.
I also love the idea of him dropping something,
like a mixtape or like his new hit album.
He's dropping it.
Like, I'm George R. Martin and I'm here to drop T.
That's better because I was looking at a strong ballwass.
like Bellwasa mindset of what, what do we mean? What is he dropping? Like, strong Bellwast in front of
very serious. No, I was like, what are we talking about? Um, yes. No, T-wow, baby, T-wow. Well,
that is a dream for spring, everyone, a dream. It could be for this coming winter or fall.
Could be any time. Either way, it would be a time for wolves. Oh. They say, oh. Someone let us out.
we've been locked up here for too long.
Free them.
This month, housekeeping,
let's go.
Catching Fire Part 2B
V.
Well, I'm not doing the full name.
You literally legally cannot make me.
It's like our 80-something Patreon episode.
We do a lot of these.
But heck, this is coming out.
We're getting to the end of the second act of catching fire.
We will get to the first part.
of the third act of catching fire next month.
This is getting confusing.
But in November, we will, of course, be taking a break from the Hunger Games to celebrate Thanksgiving with you all.
The only way that we know how, which is season two's Thanksgiving episode of Gossip Girl.
That's right.
We are on a nine-year-long tribute to Gossip Girl every November.
We have a new family tradition that we only started last.
year um you could start a new tradition with your family today yeah it's us your family of gossip
girls gone can't honestly that shows up for us every now and then if you uh search up for us i think
it gets a non zero amount of attention gossip girls gone can't you know someday when we're
dried up and we finish this series in full beat uh we will just be a gossip girl podcast once a year
It's like...
Just kidding. We'll also be a Robin Hobb podcast.
Yeah. Well, I was going to say, like, it doesn't have to be once here.
I guess we could just, like, it'd be hard. That's its own journey.
We could cover, like, Gossip Girl, but I...
In full. I've thought about it.
It's also definitely an endeavor.
Yeah, it's definitely also an endeavor.
That's a commitment for sure.
So, something to think about one day that we don't have to think about soon.
but
Yeah
But catching fire this month
Hunger Games
And the fun is happening
We're ready
The fun being murder
Oh
Yeah that's true
That's true
Well
Other fun
Where people get together
Would be on September 21st
Where
There will be no murder
There will be no murder
True
I probably should have led with that
I probably should have led
and reassured the people that no one will die
unless it's of fun.
And that is our Discord, Patreon,
brunch slash happy hour,
September 21st.
Where Chloe has named it, but like, you know,
it was chosen A because it's the first day of fall,
but B, so that we could go
Bapap, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.
It's not actually this year, by the way.
What, why?
What does that mean?
922 is this year.
The Equinox falls on the Monday this year.
I hate this year.
This year's the worst year.
This is...
2025 is full of shit.
Like, I simply am done with it.
In the words of a poet, John Darnell, I'm going to make it through this year.
I'm not sure I will, you know?
I love the mountains.
But I'm not sure I fucking will.
Okay.
I made it through the other years that we sang that song and maybe we used it all up.
Yeah, maybe we used it all up.
We used up all the magic.
I don't know. It's pretty bad still.
Like, everything is kind of terrible.
Yeah.
All the time.
But yes, fall into fall with us at Brappy Hour, where things will be better than terrible.
That I can promise you.
Oh, yeah.
For our thunder tier and above patrons at patreon.com slash girls gone canon.
That's C-A-N-O-N.
We did get some fun emails and tweets of note.
And also Spotify comments
Oh my God, we did
I did check the spotters
Yeah, but we need to come back to those
But some of them are good
I'm excited
Don't worry, we will come back
This is a fat chapter
Like it's thick
It is
This chapter's got booty
This got those really sexy
Like stomach curves going on
Those chapter's got it all
For this chapter
And it's good
It's good good
and I will preface our lightning round with generally when we do a lightning round I really commit
and if it's the end of the book I will do the end of the book as a lightning round and I will do
the chapters leading up to the chapter we're in today I am not doing that I am not being reasonable
you all know what happens in the end of storm of swords death murder a lot of fuckery
which will not happen at brunch you guys also know no no murder and you
You also know what happens in a Feast for Crows, which is also beat, death, murder, a lot of fuckery, a lot of scheming, a lot of setup, a lot of this, a lot of that.
Instead, today, we want to dive right in, because Eliana said this wasn't an 11-year wait for some folks.
Not us.
Thank God, I'm not a sucker.
I wasn't even alive, you know.
Yeah.
When this book came out.
I'm going to throw myself down the stairs.
again
again
that said
today's lightning round
will be very brief
only on a dance
with dragons
which by the way
has more murders
so
kicking us off
is the prolog
where Veramir
seeks another body
Tyrion 1
Tyrion flees
across the narrow
sea
where a dragon
with three heads
seeks his support
Who could it be?
Oh
The coin is flipping
Well, one of those dragons has no heads.
Interesting.
So, that tosses us into Denaries 1 in a dance with dragons,
where shadows and bones haunt DeNaris' every move in Marine.
Was this just a shadow and bone reference?
I guess, kind of.
I didn't really think about it when I wrote it, but yeah, maybe.
Interesting, interesting.
Oh, I guess Dario is kind of.
of Barry Ben. Anyways, she could hear the dead man coming up the steps. The slow, measured sound
of footsteps went before him, echoing amongst the purple pillars of her hall. Denary's Targaryen
awaited him upon the ebon bench that she had made her throne. Her eyes were soft with sleep,
her silver gold hair all tousled. Your grace, said Sir Bereson Selmy, the Lord Commander of
her queen's guard.
There is no need for you to see this.
He died for me.
Danny clutched her lion pelt to her chest.
Underneath, a sheer white linen tunic covered her to mid-thigh.
She had been dreaming of a house with a red door when Missande woke her.
There had been no time to dress.
I would like to take this moment because I only just now remembered that it existed
after saying that word to shamelessly plug
our Queen's Guard
Patreon episode
We did do that once
We did do that actually we covered all the Kingsguard right
Yeah
goddamn right
And the Queen's Guard
George give us blood and fire
And cover some more
Yeah true true true
Part 2
Could be fun actually would be fun
There's actually a lot of juicy things in there
For the Kings Guard
It makes you think of people like
that didn't get to be queen,
which we've talked about quite a bit, like,
Elora, right?
I wonder if we'd get anything on Elora, for example,
or other people that were supposed to be queen.
Yeah.
Growing that Queen's guard.
And then by sheer will of killing off the women in the story, they die.
Oh, yeah, I was thinking of, like, Dana as well.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yes.
I love that.
And also, real sad, big sad that she was dreaming of the house with the red door.
Oh, true. Yes. That was sad. That was sad.
Erie and Ziqui tell her not to touch the dead people herself because it's bad luck.
Unless she killed them herself, then it's okay.
She thinks that, oh, they're just girls with their superstitions.
Ah, yes. I love how this connects towards the end of the chapter, too, right?
like she after this we're gonna see but she closes the eyes of the of the guy and you know because he's dead and he should have some sort of peace and respect to his body uh and when she does that it's crazy because then at the very end of the episode you have the girl's bones so i'm sure erie and jiki are all like oh that's very bad luck see what you've wrought see what you've done but yeah very
interesting to like parallel that at the beginning she brings and reaps and touches the dead
against superstition at the end more bones more death in retrospect now that i think about it
unless you know maybe like for sure how someone died you know how some superstitions are like
born out of like an actual practical reason it does make sense it does make a little sense if you
don't know how they died don't just go around touching dead bodies because if it is some sort of like
infection or illness, you could maybe get it, which is kind of...
I also feel like, yeah, the dysentery, the pale mare, yeah, that goes around in this book,
but you know.
Interesting.
There's a lot in this chapter that I feel like is setting up the entire story of her arc in
this book, right?
Of her fighting and resisting and trying and trying to find the peace and then embracing
the dragon at the end and what that means for her, but then also these bits throughout
that are also scattered, like the flux.
like the politic breakdown that's going to happen.
Very interesting.
And then also, something you just said,
also maybe don't touch bodies and treat them.
Like I wouldn't treat a dead body any differently
than the way I would a physical live body.
So like if I would have maybe done this for you in your real life,
like if I would have touched your cheek in the real life,
in the real world,
then maybe I would do that to you while dead.
But like also, I don't know.
respect
Corposes, man
Yeah, I think it
like really depends
But she did his feet
Well, she did his sweet
It's sweet
But like they're right
A little
Like if you killed someone
Then you know how they died
But if you don't know
Like I understand why they
Why they have that practice
It is sweet of her to do
But I'm just like well
In retrospect
I get it
With all the illness
Going around
Denari's anti-vaxxer Targaryen
Oh my God
Why is she so anti-vaxer?
Call her a Kennedy.
No, the other Kennedys have denounced him.
Yeah.
They're like, we don't claim him.
You got to be careful with that.
They don't have a good track record with life either.
Historically, everyone dies.
True, true, true.
If my corpse is very fresh and, like, you know how I died,
I think it could be okay for you to touch my cheek.
That's all.
I would touch your cheek in the living world and the dead world.
Okay, yeah, beautiful.
Also, like, you know it would be me and,
one of your best friends over your body, like, making sure, like, we would stand vigil and also
be like, that's not what she looked like. She needs to look more like herself. You guys need
to do a better job. She's not going anywhere for anyone to see her like this. The dead people
makeup is weird. I was like, they don't do. She doesn't do her makeup like that. Yeah, it was
strange. It's like stage makeup for your death. It's very sad.
Make sure I look snatched. When I'm dead. Yeah, I would never.
Make sure that like, you know. When I fucking lose my mind someday, you're going to make sure that my hair
has died before I die.
You know what I mean?
I'm not going out there looking like that.
Okay, good to know.
I'll make sure.
I'll make sure.
I'm going to be you for a second, by the way.
And I love the very, the language
of the open.
She could hear the dead man coming up the steps.
That could be a chapter in a dream of spring.
No, I agree.
It's very cold ones, bro.
I mean, you read me for filth.
That's exactly what I thought.
When I was rereading this,
when I was like, eh, that's film.
When I saw it, I was like, Eliana's gonna say it's like
the others.
It's so it's good.
Yeah, see, but it would be fine.
Like, imagine if we were, like, whites and zombies,
it wouldn't be weird if you touched me.
I could do my own makeup.
Oh, my God.
If you think about it.
I think my body would retain that memory.
I don't think that you need to worry about makeup at that point.
How to shape my eyebrows.
You would just be preparing for John Snow's sword.
To be snatched.
To slay.
To slay queen.
Get out of here.
Oh, my gosh.
So, some of the language actually there of the opening like that even reminds me of like the
Mercy chapter and be like, oh, she's a dead girl.
She's about to be murdered later and things like that.
So, I don't know.
It makes sense had Mercy also been in this book, which it almost was, but then it wasn't.
But, yeah, it turns out we find out what we mean is that there's a lot of people carrying
this dead man up.
And, yeah.
There's something I love here as well
I mean, where she's thinking about her handmaids
And she's like, oh, they're just girls
She doesn't dwell too much on this thought a little
But it parallels even Sansa
Feeling that she too has lived through so much
As she thinks of like the Tyrell's party
Yes, I love the line
That's exactly, okay
So you can read me for filth this time
Because the first thing I thought was
Sanza pitied them
Sonsa envied them
Like, that's the biggest reason I kept it in about the superstitions.
I mean...
Because that is how Danny feels in some ways, right?
Like, she's like, oh, you guys are so young, but are they?
They're not.
We're told that they're of an age.
And it's supposed to tell us, you know, that De Neri's...
Excuse me.
That Deneeris feels like she's lived through so much as a queen.
And, like, she's had to shoulder so many things, which is, like, true.
But with Sonsa, I am.
I am kind of like, yeah, the other high-born ladies probably have not experienced what she has
experienced.
But when it comes to Denaries and her handmaids, like, I'm going to throw this out there.
I kind of think that they might have been through worse than her.
Like, one of them was like a sex slave, and they also were torn from their families a little,
and then also lived through the starving as we went through the red waste.
And, like, sure, they didn't go through a miscarriage and stuff.
But I don't think that, you know, their lives have been the best.
either. That's all. It hasn't been what they would have chosen. It's not what they would have chosen for
themselves. Yeah. I mean, like, they seem content enough with their station being handmaids to a queen,
but also I'm just like, I don't know. Like, maybe, maybe it's not, like, all peachy for them.
Yeah. They all almost died. There's almost an echo of that throughout this chapter, right? As we start to
see some of the governance going on between the freed men and the nobles and Danny.
There may even be some of that running through the veins of it.
I don't know.
Yeah.
I see what you mean.
There's a lot of other things.
I still need to like, I've gone on this rant with some of the mods from our asswoff
and I need to put my thoughts together more.
Maybe we'll get to it in a different chapter.
But about like qualms with the way Marine is written, we'll get to it one day.
Yeah.
So when Danny thinks of her hand.
maids she thinks of Drogo because he, quote unquote, gave them to her. No comment.
Drogo had also given her the pelt that she wore, too. She thinks about that.
Greyworm leads atop the steps with four of his unsullied, burying the dead man on their
shoulders. Greyworm has three spikes on his shoulder armor while his men only have one.
The man had been handsome, though he was slashed open from ear to ear, from Lees or old Valentus,
maybe. He had been snatched off of a ship and sold into bondage when he was an
Astipore. There are more wounds than she can count in his body, and Barriston says they found
him in a drawing of a harpy in blood. The sons of the harpy did their butchery by night,
and over each kill, they left their mark. Yeah. So, I don't know if this is true or not,
but, like, the slashing of the mouth-to-mouth does kind of feel like an homage to Batman.
and The Joker, and this is one that, like, I didn't just, like, make up, I think, unlike the other
things that I say are inspired, like, because the Dark Night came out in 2008, and, I don't
know, George loves his comic book and superhero homagees.
It's really funny you say that, because actually, you keep doing this every week where you say,
like, oh, I think this was inspired by this comic, and I'm just like, I have never thought that,
and I read the comics that you're talking about.
I'm like, I never thought that, ever.
But I was going to actually say with this one,
the comedian from Watchmen,
I think that's probably maybe closer.
I haven't like read Watchmen since also probably 2008.
What?
What happened with the comedian again?
So.
Actually, literally, probably not.
He gets his face slashed out with a broken bottle, basically.
And he gets slashed open from ear to ear.
I mean, he kind of deserves it, but he basically, the North Vietnamese surrender because of Dr. Manhattan's powers.
And he gets confronted by his lover who's a pregnant Vietnamese woman that he impregnated while, yes, the eye role that Eliana just did.
I hope you all heard it because I think I could hear it all the way across the country.
But yeah, the comedian's a fucking piece of shit.
I mean, that's real.
So anyways, he's like, I'm going to plan to leave the country and get out of here.
and you're not coming with me
and she's in a rage
and she slashes his face
open with a broken bottle
and as you could imagine
yes it was good for her
as her last act
oh no I hate that for her
he's the worst
but basically his face is disfigured
he has a scar from like his right eye
down to the corner of his mouth
and that's why he wears
like the leather gimp mask
oh okay
all right yeah I don't like remember him that much
I mostly remember being upset
about the differences between
the movie and the film because I was like bring back the alien invasion I should get you the
really beautiful like official graphic novel the whole one I'm I don't know if I make do I have one
I don't know and I was like bring back though what is that name the like the the boat man
remember how there's like an ongoing like boatman side plot and it's thematic yes I was about that I love
that um i love that i also love the like the flashback stuff of like the old days um what was it the young
mariner right he's like marooned marooned is that the side story from that series oh yeah that might
have been what it was yeah no that's what i was talking about the lone mariner yeah i loved that
yeah yeah yeah and also i was like okay me she should appreciate it the dr manhattan weird
like orgy thing more, you know?
I was like, honestly,
Slay.
Yeah, that's true.
Manhattan rocks.
I think about Manhattan all the time.
Yeah, for real.
Yeah, I don't know, but I think he might have been thinking about the Watchmen maybe.
Okay.
Yeah, it's possible.
That feels maybe indicative of his upbringing more.
The Joker, like, yeah, but it's not, he's very comics.
Yeah, I was just thinking like because this is like the victim, right?
The guy who died.
And, like, that's kind of what I...
The Joker was doing that in that movie, right?
I don't remember. I don't know anything.
I don't remember anything from that time.
I wasn't even born yet.
De Neri's asked why this guy was alone,
and Greyworm tells her that Stalwart Shield was off duty
and had attended a pleasure house to drink and find companionship.
And we have a line that explains that the brothels had sprouted up like mushrooms all over Marine.
Lots to comment here.
I will say,
I did a little Tyrion 1 reading today
You know when one does
You know you just sit around you're like
What if I read Tyrion 1 as a lark
And I did
Around the corner
It's coming
She's coming for us
I did think that
Of the the mushrooms when I read this
In general from Tyrion's last chapter
Right the mushrooms that he
Forges because he's really into cottage core now
But also the mushrooms that Illyrio tries to feed to him
And then also we have that running line of brothels and sex work and where do whores go going on in his first chapter.
So I thought that was kind of fun because if brothels are sprouting up like mushrooms over here and wherever Danny kind of goes,
Tyrion is following that trail right now.
Ironically, it leads him to her.
Literally, that's where he and Jora end up, right, in a brothel.
Yeah, that's a good thematic tie between what's going on in their respective stories.
He's following Tysha's trail to find Danny, but he's not actually following him.
her tail. There's also something here where it has this language about how the price of flesh
has been getting cheaper while the price of food has been getting higher. And it just kind of
feels cannibalistic, like adjacent. And like, I don't know that it's intentional or not, but like
considering how many thematic ties there are going on, it does feel that way, especially because
people might have to start turning to cannibalism at some point in the story. But I mean,
I mean, Alirio says it in the last chapter, to Tyrion, that starvation is coming for everyone.
But also, it's kind of just, like, in a way, they were kind of feasting off the flesh of things, right?
Like a feast for crows.
They're eating the people.
The crows are, I mean.
Yum.
But also, like, both.
Very recession core of them, you know, the cannibalism.
JK., JK.
I am kind of like, what is.
I mean, it is, though.
Yeah, what if we, like, taught them how to re-skill?
What if we gave everyone, like, trades?
I mean, clearly the economy is suffering right now.
What if we train the people in other jobs?
Not just that.
Like, this is fine.
But, like, literally, there's so many people out there right now in Marine.
And they're like, what do we do?
I was thinking about that.
Yeah.
It's not one-one, but you think about Agan and Rainey's and Vesnia
and why they worked so well as a trio, which is that each of them covered a principle
that keeps the nation sewed together, right?
Vesnia covers the Marshall.
Agan covers diplomacy.
see Rainey's covers skills and arts and trade and different things that also keep people
alive in their souls, in their spirits, as well as in their hands and as well as in their lives.
So I think there was just like certain parts like economics for Rainies and Vesnia for
armies and diplomacy for Egan.
You have all these very base traits that blend together.
And while reading this chapter, it really struck me of how alone DeNeres is.
She doesn't have the width and depth in all of these.
there's something interesting about, like, she just doesn't have, like, a way to implement all this stuff.
I mean, it's coming up in just a moment, right, that we'll learn about that she doesn't have the right people, the right place, the right stuff going on, that she can even rebuild any infrastructure.
She really does, like, she has no idea about any kind of infrastructure.
And, like, again, in her defense, they've taught her everything but that.
They've taught her how to be a conqueror, but not a ruler, which is why she's, like, here, but she doesn't really see that gap and understand it, especially because, like, what she's trying to rule over.
is a city that had like a fucking broken-ass infrastructure, right?
Like, this is not a good system.
And trying to transition from that makes it difficult.
But also, like, you're so right about the originally conquering trio.
Vesnia is Gannon.
Egan is Link.
And Radies is Zelda.
I'm not falling for that.
That's bait.
I mean, I'm not wrong.
Let's be real.
I'm not wrong.
I mean, no one's written in to agree with you.
So, God, now that I fucking said it, though, Jesus fucking crazy.
Yeah, actually, no, you're right.
They haven't.
They had, like, two weeks to do it.
No one backed me up.
Anyways.
Oh, wait.
It's for the better this way.
I think it's better.
That's because it was, like, buried in there in the patronage.
So, anyways, listen, you guys, we're talking about the Triforce and how different characters can embody that part of the Triforce.
All right.
Like, in one of my trios, I'm Gannon, and I will be taking no arguments.
Wait, what am I?
In which trio with me and you?
With you, it would be you, Emmett, and I don't know, you might be Gannon.
Fuck, I wanted to be Gannon.
He's the sexiest one.
Yeah, I'm just like...
And my forceful nature?
Yeah, I guess, I think, I think Emmett, sorry, I think your roommate would be Zelda.
I guess I'd be link
I don't know
What do you think?
Much to think about this?
Yeah, maybe.
No, absolutely.
I also love casting my roommate
as like the beautiful one
every time.
But at the same time
He plays them well.
You, when we do think about
the Concord, original Concord Trio,
you are Agin, and I'm Visenya
and your roommate is Rainey's.
Like that, we know.
We've established that already.
And agreed upon it, all three of us.
So there must be a canon.
I don't know.
Anyways, I'm going to come back to this language about the price of flesh getting cheaper and the food costs and this idea of consumption as these brothels keep coming up.
And there's obviously like kind of an escapist aspect here as well, arguably because shit is bad in Marine.
Yeah.
And the language reminds me actually of Meathouse, man.
Oh, yeah.
Especially because like there's an equation there again, like not just like the literal cannibalism, but like an equation of the meat and the flesh and the food together.
And it's like you're saying too, right?
Like the price is getting very close to being similar, if not cheaper, to just eat people.
It might, but I think they will not do that.
For the same reason, maybe you just shouldn't touch random dead people, which again, dysentery.
I mean, I don't know, they have a giant grill.
I mean, that's not nice.
I should just call them drogan, but they have a giant slow cooking or fast cooking.
That's why they release the other two just to increase protection.
ready to eat food
oh god
alright so danny back in the tragedy
of stalwart shield
Danny asks what could a eunuch find in a brothel
why would he have gone to a brothel and greyworm
gives her a little education and reminds her
that like one without a man's parts
still has a man's heart
Stellert shield would go and give coin
to the women to lie with him and hold him
and there's some of the thesis right everyone needs love
That's also Meathouse Man Coded, which is all the thesis of which is also that everyone needs love.
Yeah, which I think you are onto something, Eliana, well-straught.
That is what the last POV.
And I mean, I think that's what DeNaris' POV is about.
You and I have been saying this for a long time.
What would happen if His Dar, if Dario, if Drogo, if all these men had turned to her and just offered her, like, intimate communication, commitment, you know,
Love, what would have happened?
She could have just abandoned it all.
What if, like, till Dario, I mean, it's too late by the time he comes.
But what if, what if they had just said, here's our beautiful home, we can stay here, we can be content, you'll be safe.
Arguably, what could that life have been?
She'll never know.
Arguably, Dario, I mean, like, he offers her a little, like, in terms of love, but, you know, she, she didn't necessarily, I guess, she wanted the promise of home.
Home was supposed to have love.
and we have a line here
goes along with it a little of
the blood of the dragon does not weep
just like back in the beginning of a game of thrones
right when they're raping and killing
the Lazarine women
killing the Lazarine people
and she looks around right
and we'll come back to this line but this is it
this is the price of the iron throne
a dragon does not weep I cannot cry
I must not be seen crying for this
and here she is again
the blood of the dragon does not weep
she convinces herself that she cannot cry.
And she asks, was Stelbert Shield his name?
And then she says it was a fine name.
That's nice.
Right?
That was the name that he chose to keep.
And I do love how much this goes on.
We see that there's a regimen name to Stelbert Shields, right, in order to honor him.
So you see this name, this chosen name goes on.
And it is a very strong name.
I mean, Alicent Hightower's brother called her son Darren,
Stellwart and House of the Dragon.
I'm just kidding. I'm sorry.
She did.
I mean, he did.
But yeah.
Makes me big sad, bro.
That scene was so sad.
That, like, made me cry.
And I don't even, like, care what happens to any of these people, but it made me cry.
It was just beautiful.
Like, she's such a compelling, compelling character with what they've done with.
Yeah.
So compelling.
She's in something soon.
I forgot what.
I saw, like a...
Trouble chains in Renera's dungeon is what I'm hearing.
No, I mean, like, a...
Olivia Cook. My bad. Oh, I'm sorry. I thought we were talking about Renira and her strap and Alice in High Tower.
Oh, yeah. But we're not. We're talking about De Neri's and Stalwart Shields death. I've seen she's in a couple things, actually. She's in NYC a lot. She's always walking around. I always hope when I'm there, I'm going to see her and I never do.
She's coming out in something soon. Maybe it's called, maybe it's the girlfriend. I don't know. It's a psychological thriller. Congratulations.
With Robin Wright. Good for me. She is coming out as my girlfriend. Thank you.
Yeah. Oh, you're going to have to fight Greenera for her.
Oh, God. She has a dragon or seven. Dude, what the fuck.
It makes me want to understand if Stalwart chose this name as his own, right?
Or if it was the previous name he had or if this is what he chose.
It seems, especially from the conversation bag of board, it's not like clear, clear, but it's like, this is the name he chose.
Like, he wanted to be this.
I think he chose it because, like, the names that they were given and would draw from the thing were, like, very demeaning names.
Like, poopy butthole.
Yeah, pretty much.
Terrible.
Literally, it was like that.
It's fucking horrible.
So I do think he chose this one, and it's beautiful.
It's nice that this is what he wanted to be.
He wasn't a weapon.
He was a protector.
We're talking about the everyone needs love thing.
This is the loneliness, right, that we've been talking about of what it needs to keep
rule.
Denarius can't show vulnerability.
She cannot show that she's crying.
She has to convey strength.
This is a similar thing that Rob Stark wrestled with.
John Snow wrestles with it too, but he's also very big sad and in his feelings, so he's struggling to show those emotions anyway.
But Deniery's cannot cry in this moment, and it's difficult, right?
Because she has to project strength by not doing that, which is kind of a more masculine thing.
But there is, like, again, the dissolving of human connection by not having that reaction.
She has to turn down these human parts of her.
But it is a double-edged sword for women.
when it comes to, do you cry or do you not cry as a leader?
And if you want to see what this looks like when we're talking about it,
there's an episode of Veep that is literally about this,
but is actually inspired by a real thing that happened to Hillary Clinton,
where she was seen as very cold and like unrelatable to people,
and then she was like talking about something I forgot what was,
and she starts crying, and then suddenly her approval rating goes up, right?
This is also what happens in Veep.
And that is good as a woman leader because they want to see you cry.
They want to see you, like, have that softness.
But you can't cry too much or else you're going to look crazy, right?
Which is also what happens in Veep.
So it's a difficult balance and she opts to not cry.
I wouldn't be able to fix that, you know?
I'd just cry and cry and cry.
I cry a lot.
Yeah.
That's it.
That's the, that's the, that's the sight.
I cry a lot.
Sometimes I get like a ravaging soft.
in my chest out of nowhere and I have to get it out for a minute and then I'm like oh all right
back to doing nothing because I'm exhausted all the time from everything going out of the world
yeah yeah you got them you know like every day it releases different kinds of chemicals depending on
what you're feeling which is good for metering you know your emotions or whatever's oh I'd be
releasing chemicals my friend I'd be releasing them six or more men had fallen on
stalwart shield he was found with an empty scabbard no sword when Danny
asks, why was his face slashed open?
Greyworm tells her, well, to make room for the genitals of a goat.
That is why his face was slashed open, because they could not feed him his own genitals.
Which tells you something of the practice of this kind of lynching, right, that usually they would
then also castrate the victim and then, you know, demean you further by forcing your own genitals
into your throne and mouth.
And it's about the sexual assault, right?
The assertion of like one type of masculinity and the dehumanization, the feminization,
therefore dehumanization of someone else.
But they already, as we know, don't see the unsullied as human.
They see the slaves as beneath them.
And so, I don't know, there's something like complex here.
I mean, we talk about this sort of thing all the time, whatever.
You've probably heard, like, make the same point five other times or more over the years.
But they're controlling, they've already controlled his body once,
but that this is part of the practice to castrate them anyway,
reminds me of like, where was it?
Was it Tuskegee?
I don't remember in the United States where they were sterilizing men
and like sterilizing black men specifically and giving them syphilis under the guise
of, oh, we're helping your health and we're like doing some sort of health tests.
The idea of sexual reproduction and frivolity as a way to A, control your masculinity and
be your humanity.
There's something about that going on here with the need to stuff genitals in someone's
throat, so. And, like, I'm not against genitals in the throat. It just needs to not be this
situation. It needs to be attached to a person. And consensual. Consensual. And hot. Definitely
hot. If it's not hot, it's like, is it? The consent makes it hot. And when it's attached to a
person, I mean, unless, like, everyone's consented to it. I don't know. Anyways. On my deathbed,
if I tell you to do some weird shit, I guess you're going to do some weird shit, I guess so. If
that's what you want, like put it in your will, though.
know on paper got it yeah you got it i i'm a person who processes verbal information read
yes understood i'm very similar um ironically as we host our podcast
glossing over all this oh yeah that casualness that danny then says she's like oh this is the
first of our soldiers that they've slain like they're getting very comfortable with this whole
game they're playing, this whole serial
killing Zodiac-ass game that they're playing
and Barristan's like, yeah, and they're
not the last soldiers of yours, they will
kill. Great. And it's interesting,
right? This is like a giant war
that's happening quietly. It's
terrible. It is terrible. We have
this line of, I am still
at war, Danny realized, only
now I am fighting shadows.
She had hoped for a respite from the
killing for some time to build and heal.
We've heard her repeat this pretty
often, right, that she had just won.
her people, her children to grow.
She had wanted them to be able to have time to live,
have the time she's never had to live in a way, right?
She wants to afford them a life,
which is very, very admirable, very honorable.
And we start this book with her fighting shadows and enemies
all around her in this chapter,
and then it ends with one great shadow that she can't fight.
Drogon, herself, right?
Embracing herself.
We start to see this outline form
between the two routes Danny has to take,
choosing to govern, choosing to conquer,
the fallout and mess that comes from both.
At the front of the book, she's thinking,
I wanted time to build and heal,
and at the end of the book,
she's speaking to ghost astroplane, fake in her head.
She's dehydrated, and her tummy really hurts, Jora.
And he's saying, I told you, I told you.
Your wars in Westeros not here, I told you.
And she says, I was young.
I had wanted my people to live.
I had wanted them.
to build and heal again, Jora.
She says it again, right?
We've returned full circle.
When you look at this chapter versus Circe one in a dance with dragons,
it's interesting because it's actually kind of similar in a few ways.
You have prophecy, dreams, betrayals, enemies everywhere.
But Danny isn't really immediately assigning the enemies, the betrayals.
She's more ponderous.
She's like, could it be this person?
Could it be this person?
They're all around.
Not that much of a difference.
Circe is out there just assigning shooters.
She's like, and then Kevin looked at me wrong, and I knew.
he was plotting my death.
But you know what?
Like, not that different in the long run.
Was he not?
Two things can be true.
Sorcey's doing it in a wacky and zany way.
Danny's doing it in a tragic and eloquent way.
Just kidding.
They're both a little desperate in the POV thoughts.
That's it.
There's a lot of desperation of being alone, having no one.
Life's hard.
It's hard being a girl boss, in my opinion.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I wouldn't know.
It's also really fun to ice.
late Barriston Quentin and Danny chapters in this book and treat them as their own royal
like court like you're doing with Circe or like you've done with everyone in Kings Landing each
book each time so now you have your own royal court beginning to found in this and you can start
to kind of play with the real players and I think there's a lot of it could be really difficult
to keep track of like Danny's players in her court right they we don't have three books to
understand varies with this right her varies
We don't have, we have Barrison as the Queen's hand.
We have Scahas, leading the shave paints and the brazen beast.
Tilly's fired.
Get a job.
Marcellin, the mother's men.
Simon is leading the Free Brothers.
Taltrak, the Stalbert Shields.
Greyworm, the Unsullied, later Jokin and Widower lead the Storm Crows when Dario is
unavailable due to hostagesry.
There's Ron Moe, who's leading the Calisar, while the Calisar is also unavailable.
And then there's Bellas, who's just Bellas, right?
He's leading everyone.
His web connects us all, honestly.
He's leading the podcast.
That would be incredible merch, a, like, artwork of Bellas, and it just says his web connects us all.
No other info.
And then you have, like, a web, like, carved into his stomach and all the sashes.
Sick.
Write it down.
Write it down right now.
That's incredible.
Okay, hold on.
That's, like, incredible.
Bellwoss, web, scars, connects us all.
They do.
All right.
There are a lot of dynamics, though, here that, like, you know, you start to understand, like, this person would be, like, the city watch.
This person would be this thing.
You start to kind of be able to picture, and it's a very different court than Westrose, but you start to picture the similarities in court.
So Diniere's kneels beside the corpse, and despite the warnings, her maids gave her, and that we realized might have had some logic to it of touching the dead.
She closes his eyes and commands him washed and dressed for battle, buried with his cap and shield and spears.
She commands, they ask the temple of the graces if anyone has come around with a sword wound
and tells them to spread word that they'll pay good gold for stalwart shield's short sword.
And she also asked them to inquire at the butcher's and herdsmen, find out if there's anyone around who gelds goats.
And finally, she says that no man will walk alone after dark anymore.
And to be honest, I'm a little impressed with Danny's ideas of how to find a murder.
I think some of these were pretty good investigative ideas as someone who's an expert and has been watching the hit show.
It was a hit show, psych.
And I know that people...
There's a psych panel at Dragon Con.
Really?
Is it having a renaissance?
Yeah, it's still huge.
That's crazy.
No, I think it just still has fans, yeah.
It was a fun show.
It could have been new.
It could have been new.
I will say someone in the past, I forgot who, maybe it was Brendan B. Fish, who talked about
how a lot of De Nere's Miranese plot line, it might not have been him, parallels Ned's plotline
in terms of the sort of different players that are here at court and investigations going on.
Honestly, it might have been Feldman, I'm sorry, if I got it already been mixed up, my bad.
I don't remember, but anyways, a thought.
this line then of
find these cowards for me, find them
so that I might teach the harpy's sons
what it means to wake the dragon.
Oh, don't wake the dragon.
Don't wake the dragon.
Wake the dragon. Wake the dragon.
There's a lot of that in this chapter, right?
Yeah.
Interesting.
A lot of adopting of the language,
which is interesting because then at the end
of the book when she's, you know,
being astral plane,
subconscious, shitting herself,
dehydrated, etc.
Like I said earlier, like when he comes back
and he's scolding her basically
and she's arguing with him
and I think that's interesting
because she is again fighting
between who she should be here.
Yeah.
I love what you're calling out
about her instincts, right?
She tells them after that
when she tells them
they'll find out what it means
but like it is
some of her smarter moves
of the chapter.
She found the middle of the road solution
she found a way to do it
without doing too much disruption
of the people and without being like
how could you do this one thing
and now everyone shall
suffer like Joffrey or Taiwan or someone else would have done right I mean I think like the tickler
I think of that as a that's a local system of justice the tickler you know she's not necessarily
doing that however she's finding the way through using means that even her counselors here in
private and this is also a big difference this is like a private session yeah some of the
counselors are emergency here for where later they can't be present they can't they can't
They can be there, but they need to agree with what she says in order for her to maintain control.
So here, she's able to actually think out loud a little bit with them.
Well, you also don't like want too many people, I guess, knowing about these things because it also
weakens your rule a little if too many people are getting away with it, you know?
So yeah, you can't be like, oh, everyone's going to be punished because you don't want them
knowing that people are standing up against you.
Yeah, absolutely.
Bariston lingers after the unsullied leave, warning denieries that they are ill-suited
for these tasks.
The unsullied are obedient soldiers, he says, not investigators.
And I'm like, you don't know that.
Don't project.
Anyways.
I mean, we literally just learned that they all are their own people.
Yeah, exactly.
Some of them, like, have...
It was just shown to us, Barry.
They've observed very...
I've seen some very good thinking from the Insullied.
So I'm just saying, you don't know that.
Barretted.
Just because, like, thinking...
I mean, Greyworm is intelligent as shit, and he's always up on Danny and be like, actually,
your grave's...
This, this, this.
So, Barryson's settled down.
don't know everything. I know, right? He's impatient. I get it. There's something interesting here
regarding the description of his physical, I don't know, his physical abilities right now, his back
is described as unbent, which I think, that word just stands out to me. It's not like a typical
word that people use, I think, especially in the context of Dorn and then how that plot line's
coming up. But also, I'm just like, maybe his back's unbent, but like, his knees sure did
bend. I mean, I think, I think that's literally part of a storyline. Interesting.
Interesting.
I would argue...
From Harry's to Robert than to Danny.
Interesting.
I would also argue against your context of Dorn saying, you know, like it's not often said
and less about Dorn in that in universe, we should assume it's said a lot in order to signify
how Dorn would be acting.
As in Dorn would be unbent.
Yeah, I mean, I'm just Doylest-Watsoning you right now.
I mean, like, I think, yeah, they are probably saying it a lot regarding Dorn for sure.
I just like...
Otherwise, would it be a saying?
No, no, I agree. They're saying it a lot in Dorn. I'm just saying in everyday life, in my life. No one's going around being like, oh, it's unbent, you know? So that's why it stands out when it happens in the text. I'm like, it's about that. It's about Dorn. It's about the needs. I retract my statement. No, we're on the same page. No, the court has retracted. Bang, bang, her statement. I'm going to start saying that things are unbent every day in my life. I'm going to start saying of like straight people, they're unbent.
Girl, that's so unbent
That's a little unbent of you
They were so unbent forward
In saying that
I'm like taking my sweater off
And these titties are about to be unbent
That's so unbent
Danny asks if her nights
That Barrison is training would fare better
And he's like well the boys I'm training
Won't be ready for years
So jot that down
Her girl rackie would be
Yeah like maybe
Maybe ask me again in five years
in a gap. Her Dothraki would be worse at this, she thinks.
She thinks they're better suited to open terrain.
They're busy securing the hinterlands, though, while Brown Ben and the second sons are guarding
against yunkish attacks and threats.
Hmm, put a pin in that. We'll come back to that.
Dario's been tasked with reopening the Lazarine grain trade, but the lamb men distrust
Marine, probably for good reason.
She concludes that until the storm crow's return, only the unsullied are available for
the city's needs, so they will.
have to do. Then we have this little quote of Danny Rose. You must excuse me, sir. The petitioners
will soon be at my gates. I must don my floppy ears and become their queen again. Some in Resnick
and the shave paint. I'll see them when I'm dressed. Okay, you know what? I retract some of my
statements as well. Daneris is doing exactly what I think she should be doing and trying to reopen
this grain trade. Like, that's literally what I've been harping about, like for, I don't know, a week. It wasn't that
long. It was only a week where I was like, maybe, maybe she should trade for food. Shit's just
hard, I guess. She's kind of doing what she can. Yeah. I mean, it's hard to be 14 and in charge
of a city state. I could not do it. Same. I get it. That's why I didn't do that. I was a 14 year old
with a lot of power. I don't. When I was 14, I was just like, I don't know, making my MySpace and
Neopats pages and my Gaia online shop. Like, what do people want from me? Anyways, the floppy
ears become a recurring motif and obviously it's very much about like this performance of power
I'm sure you all know this like I feel like I don't have to explain this to all of you like I think
our listeners are very smart we talk about it every week also I think our listeners are very smart you know
so I'm just like whatever you've read these books yeah anyways like there's very much a performance
of power which we see even earlier in this chapter where you know deniers is like I can't cry
And that's, I think, the difficulty with it, with her being the sole ruler and no one being her equal.
She has to perform always.
And she has even had to perform in earlier books, right?
She had to perform to keep her brother happy.
She had to perform to keep her husband happy.
She had to perform to get all these goddamn people through the ways.
Like, always, always.
There is no...
You get lost.
Who are you?
When does it end?
Yeah.
Exactly.
That was what I was going to add.
I was kind of like, well, how would she know who she is or how to rule.
Yo, I fucking wouldn't know.
And she's 14.
That's the time when you're supposed to be like, who am I?
And then you like go sing her I want songs.
Yeah.
Well, I have a bad news for you about the who am I and I want song because that is the question right now.
Yeah.
And at the end of the book, there's an answer.
I mean, who is she?
With the great stone dragon.
When Mufasa is in the sky amongst the stars and he looks down and says, remember who you are, Simba.
She's singing right now, though, or she was singing a few.
I just can't wait to be king.
Oh, my God, wait.
Or Timon and Pumba, I guess, from her.
Also us?
Oh, you mean in the book.
For her.
Me, us.
Wait, are you Poonba or Tammone?
What are we?
That's more important.
I don't care about them.
I think I'm the bird.
He's got anxiety.
Lovely.
and very wonderful is what I was going to finish that time's with.
And I would say Skahaz and Resnick are probably Timoan and Pumba.
Oh, interesting.
I thought, I was thinking amongst her homies.
Oh, like the homies, homies.
Yeah, the actual real homies.
I guess like Belwas and like.
Embarrassed.
I don't know.
It doesn't work as well.
I think Rezanak and Shaped.
Of us, though, back to us, who's Timon and who's Pumba?
I think you're talking about.
to moan because you like, I think you kind of keep us together
a little more, and I'm Pumba, because
I'm just like... Are you make the puns any fart?
I do. That is
chronicled on the podcast. I don't remember
what episode, and you're insistent that
it didn't happen, but I'm pretty sure
it did. I don't think it happened. I think it happened.
There's an episode. When you were
a young, that was when you were a young
warthog. Anyways, the Great
Pyramid is housing Denaries,
right? It's 800 feet in the sky.
There are beautiful gardens and terraces,
and she overlooks the city
In the West, you can see the Temple of Graces.
Behind that, the Great Pyraments of the Mighty,
maybe that's where the Sons of the Harpy themselves are,
plotting murders against her and her people.
And she thinks, which she constantly is thinking,
and I am powerless to stop them.
Poor Dineries, that is another great song of it all, right?
Powerless, she feels powerless.
oftentimes that powerlessness is something driving her.
Today, too, as we're about to come to with the petitioners,
Viserian can sense her disquiet.
He's coiled around a pear tree.
He opens his beautiful molten gold eyes to blink at her.
He reminds me of Jakey, of my kill of Jehara's.
She scratches him under his chin and she calls him lazy,
feeling his scales.
They're hot to the touch.
She says he should be out-hunting.
with his brothers, and it's like,
are you fighting with Drogon again?
They were growing wild lately, she thinks.
Regal had snapped at Erie Vissarian,
had set Resnach's Tocar ablaze
the last time he came calling.
I mean, it's like that.
They're like chihuahuas, I guess, but big.
So,
Danny has been reading the books.
She was gifted by Jora,
which is how she knows and, like, thinks about
how dragons are fire made flesh.
And that alongside her wondering,
oh, Vasyrian, are you fighting with your brothers again?
Like, you can kind of see, this is still
the sort of emotional and mental stage
she's in, you know, being at odds with
loved ones, even though Jor is not fucking worthy of that,
but whatever. This is, this is
where she's at still. She's doing a lot
of Googling about her cat's behavior
and a lot of living and learning. And yeah,
projecting a little on them about a
her and her friend who's like
40 and I guess isn't her and she's
14.
Yeah. It is kind of
funny, but she's like reading all
his books now that he's gone. She's like, finally, I had some time for some peace and
fucking quiet. Just kidding. But really. She has this thought, I have left them too much
to themselves, but where am I to find the time for them? And this is literally me working
from home with my cats. They like plop toys at my feet. And I'm like, okay, I guess it's
time to leave my computer. I'm going to throw you toys. Also, do you think that the reason
Vissarion lit Reznoch on fire is because he was annoying the shit out of Binary?
Absolutely.
Because I do.
Yeah.
I think so, because she, like, feels so annoyed about him throughout this entire chapter.
We're going to talk about it more.
But she's so annoyed with Resnack, my Resnack.
Oh, my God.
Have you tried Resnack less Resnack?
My gosh.
But, yeah, like, she's always annoyed at his presence, so I'm like, girl, it's because Viserian feels what you feel.
Yeah, I mean, like, not even dragons, right?
Animals can sense that shit, too.
Yeah, they really can.
Dogs especially, cats can too, though.
Like, it's actually really funny.
My roommate, when his brother is here,
his brother was here last week,
and my scaredy cat,
Geriz, he, like, gets really freaked out by people.
He was coming out.
Allie, my beautiful, perfect, good little queen,
she was in his lap within 20 minutes.
Yeah, she's the extrovert.
She loves doing that.
There's a couple other words I'd use to describe it,
but yeah, extrovert is a good one.
So,
The Syrian launches himself into the sky, and De Neres watches him,
thinking that they are growing, and soon they will bear her weight,
and she'll fly far away, where Marine will simply be a blip on the ground,
which again is almost what this chapter was about,
and also the dragons could have borne her weight had there been a five-year gap, just saying.
Yep, I love that line, too.
Then she would fly as Egan the conqueror had flown,
up and up until Marine was so small
she could blot it out with her thumb
as Eliana just did to the webcam
Thank you Eliana
And of course this is great
Because it sets you up for the end of the book
Right? When she does
When she flies far away
And Marine is a blot
Oh
A Marinese blot
Oh my God
Which
Did I read a little Feldy Feld today?
Yeah I got a little Afeldman
Oh, yeah.
I can't do Danny a da-da without reading Feldman.
That would be illegal, bro.
I need to revisit those.
We're going to touch on them actually a little bit here.
Yeah, we're going to talk about them a little here.
We're going to talk about them every fucking day for the rest of this book.
Let's be real.
They're foundational in some ways.
Yeah.
They've just got a lot of stuff in them that's like, yeah.
Damn.
There's some things, yeah, I've evolved on.
And then, like, some things I'm like, I mean, honestly, like, Adam Feldman knows how I feel.
Time of a Good Essay Series, you know what I mean?
Yeah.
Like, it makes you think even today, and you read it, what, a decade ago?
That's incredible.
Sorry.
Sorry to everyone.
Sorry, we're really old, but that's incredible.
We let the veneer drop.
Oh, God.
No, no, we're 12.
And veneers.
Shut the fuck up.
I'm 11.
Shut the fuck off.
Danny watches Viserian disappear behind the waters of this Cahazadan, and then she goes in the pyramid
where Iry and Zikwe help her prepare.
to become the Queen of Marine.
Time to cosplay.
So then we get a closer look at the to-car.
Yes.
You can really tell that Chloe and I haven't talked for two weeks.
We've got too many jokes this episode.
So it is a cumbersome, shapeless garment,
requiring precise wrapping and constant adjustment.
If not worn correctly, it can fall off,
trip the wearer, or restrict their movement.
It demands tiny, careful steps, and balance
due to its heavy trailing fringes.
The Tokar symbolizes wealth, power, and status, unsuitable for laborers.
Tenneres initially wanted to ban it after taking Marine, but advised her as
such as Galizza Galare.
Galare, oh, insisted she wear it to be accepted as queen.
Galare warned her that without it, she'd be seen as a foreign barbarian, not a legitimate ruler.
And Brown Van Palms simplified the idea to rule
one must fit the role
and wear the floppy ears.
Yeah, rulership
cosplay. We've seen it
throughout all the book, as Aliana said
earlier. Trapping's a power, bro.
Y'all know that theme.
But there's a great line somewhere in this chapter.
I can't be asked to go find it.
And someone's talking about how they won't
accept her as a ruler wearing mirrorish
lace and blah, blah, blah, blah.
Which I think is kind of funny
because here in Marine,
A lot of this chapter is Danny thinking, how do I help these people come together, rule these people, even though I kind of hate these people?
Like, she straight up says, like, oh, I think I despise some of these people.
Why are they terrible?
How do you rule that?
And bad news, she's going to get to Westeros, and it's not going to be different, whether you're wearing a tookar or mirish lace.
They're not going to kneel for you immediately.
It's going to be difficult.
It'll be, yeah, unbent.
You're going to come to Westros, and guess what?
You're probably going to hate these people, too, because they're not that different.
They just call it capitalism.
Oh, that's the USA.
Never mind.
They just call it futilism.
And it kind of makes me think about the future of her coming to Westeros and her coming to
Dragonstone, and maybe she does find Valerian garb in the fucking closets.
And maybe she will have her outfits.
reflect what the Valerians wore because she won't give a fuck anymore, right, about the
Westerosy cosplay. She's already done it. She's done it in Marine in a harder place. She's worn
their costumery. I think this chapter is really laying the ground also for her no longer
following the rules or the trappings eventually. When she gets to Westeros, she'll have played
these games already. She'll have done these marriages for love and da-da-da-da. She'll have
ruled in something that feels like an impossible situation. It'll be a little
make her probably head farther in the opposite direction of I won't play your games because
I have giant dragons now, quote unquote, asterisk, maybe, we'll see what size they are, but
we'll see how big they get.
But, you know, I have dragons and you don't, fuck you.
I like that idea, and I do think that's the case, but also, like, I don't know,
Valerian fashion sounds dope and also, like, yeah, she's going to hate these people
partially because she's kind of been building them up as the usurper's dogs in her mind
for a while, but also, like, Kyrion's going to come, and he's going to be like, listen,
I hate this person, I hate this person, I hate this person, I hate this person.
You should too.
He's going to, like, do the whole mean girls thing, right?
Of, like, the, you're all the different lunch tables, and he's going to do that with her,
and she's going to be like, I see, I understand it.
You really need to watch the musical.
I watch the musical.
I watched the movie version.
No, the real one, not the movie version.
They caught 70% of the soundtrack.
You need to watch the slime, too.
tutorial. This is fucked up
what you just said to me. That's the equation
of being like, Game of Thrones.
I like to watch, beep,
beep, YouTube videos.
Okay.
Disgusting. Sorry, continue.
There's a lot to unpack here.
But I do think you're right.
She's going to get to point. She's like, I'm going to wear whatever the fuck I
wanted. Honestly, I mean, maybe wearing a dragon is all you fucking need.
Let's be real.
And, like, it's interesting because also when it comes to Marine, the goalposts of, like, this is what it means to respect the culture and garner respect, the goalposts keep getting moved.
Like, sure, I'll believe you that your clothing and the Takar are part of your culture.
Yeah, sure.
Yes, I get it, because you associate that with, like, wealth and stuff.
But then the green grace keeps pushing things that, like, you know, she dangles the illusion of peace to Denaries, right?
because the lynchings, the lynchings are heartbreaking, right?
And then they have to convince her, they're like, hmm, but the slavery.
The slavery is part of Marinese culture?
And I'm like, I mean, but is it?
I mean, like, really is it?
And what right do they have to be like, it's our culture at the expense of the culture
of the people that they enslave?
And yet, I will say fascinating.
Like, how many slaves are there versus how many masters?
Do you want to go back to that?
number? I don't remember Marine, but we know in Valantis it's three to one, you know? Like, we know
in a bunch of the other free cities, like, the ratio is at least that. So I'm like, is it? And I mean,
yet fascinatingly, it is an argument that works on many in the fandom until recently. I've actually
seen the tides turning on this and like the dominant opinion now, is that it is not, this
argument rings false. Yeah. It wasn't very much.
millennial accent of me.
Yeah, I don't know what was going on there, but I respect it.
She's definitely like, it's like plea bargaining every week.
Yeah.
She's like, oh, the slavery, it's our culture.
I'm like, girl, please.
It's not culture, girl.
Also, it's really funny that you say Galare.
I'm a Galar girl.
Oh.
I say Galar.
I say the thing you don't say every time.
Well, it's just kind of like, Galore.
I don't know.
It just has a galare.
I do.
You, that's fun.
That's fun.
When you say it like that.
Brisketa.
What else do we got?
Shutta.
You gotta go.
Biscetti?
Wait.
No, there's another one that I'm thinking of where there's the E at the end.
Then I'm like, what?
But yeah, sure.
Of course.
Spaghetti sounds good.
Danny chooses a sheer white linen to-car today with golden tassel fringe
topped with her three-headed dragon crown,
thinking that her neck and head will be sore and stiff by the end of the day.
we have this passage
A crown should not sit easy on the head
One of her royal forebears had said that
Once
Some Egan, but which one
Five Eagens had ruled the seven kingdoms of West Rose
There would have been a sixth
But the usurper's dogs had murdered her brother's son
When he was still a babe at the breast
If he had lived I might have married him
Egan would have been closer to my age than Viseries
but what if there was another
there must be another
she thinks of her
another husband
she thinks of her family dead
murdered her father
her brother
and then her other brother
series
she thinks
they will kill me too if I allow it
hmm
I saw your note
you know
her father yes
like Aries
Jamie killed him
that's true
Ragar, Robert bashed his chest in, that's true too.
The series, interesting to add him to this list.
The they did kill him in some metaphorical ways, right?
The mania, the insanity of, like, chasing a dream that you can't have and have no support for,
and you had to, like, be a prentified child and you lost your shit at the age of six, basically.
But, like, yes.
I'm all for killing this.
somehow.
Also, I'm like, let me just start the sentence.
Look, I'm all for killing Viseries.
Beat, comma, space, pregnant paws.
I'm all for murdering the shit.
Out of the series, you won't find me arguing with that.
And I wouldn't necessarily say she's who killed him, right?
Because, like, he was going to kill her.
It was kind of self-defense.
And in fact, he kind of killed himself because he sold her to Drogo.
Like, that was on you.
You looked at your foot and you're like,
if I put a bullet in his foot
and then never tended
the wound and then I got like gangrene and I died.
But she was definitely
like an accomplice in that murder
in a couple ways.
Which implies to me
this might be some of her way of thinking
around that, right?
Of coming to terms and dealing with that guilt.
And that guilt does come back
later, right? Danny Ten
out in the planes when she sees him and he's like,
you killed me, girl.
I don't know why, but I just heard him with like Zeeck
voice from Bob's Berger's. You killed me, girl.
Oh my gosh.
But I love this against
Tyrion, who's also
dealing with a little weird
emotion right now, because he killed his
daddy recently
in the story. And
he's proud and angsty
from killing his dad, and he's fast
to admit he did it, but he's like,
I hate my dad. Oh, maybe I love
him. I'll tell it to my therapist.
Real Kendall Roy ours. And he says,
his father never had any use
for drunkards, but what did that matter?
His father was dead. He'd killed him.
A bolt in the belly, my lord, and all for you, if only I was better with a crossbow.
I would have put it through that cock you made me with, you bloody bastard.
And then he thinks later, such are the wages of the kinslayer as the wind howled outside.
And I feel like that's very, especially with him like on the trail for the other Agin right now.
it feels very appropriate for this passage.
Well, I love what you've called out here because I hadn't really thought about it in this context before.
Like, I know the areas is thinking about, like, everybody here is going to, like, kill her if they could.
But, like, she is like, yeah, I've got it a little end in the hysteria.
But, like, you're right.
Like, there is an aspect of it.
She definitely has, she definitely has some culpability in that.
And, like, does she have justification for doing so?
Yes.
Does she feel complex about it?
Because, yeah, this person, she realizes this was a broken man who was trying to raise me and also hurt me.
And as you said, same with Tyrion.
And I'm, like, thinking about it in terms of, like, I don't know that De Neri's is going to be the one necessarily responsible for the death of Randall Tarley in the same way as in the show.
But so many people were like, I don't understand why Sam, like, got so in his feelings about Randalli dying.
Oh, that's so fucking dumb.
even wrote a Tumblr blog post about it when people were saying that shit. That's how
dumb it was. It made me mad enough to write a tumbler post, Eliana. I was, I was mad about it.
And also, like, it's kind of exactly a similar emotion to what we're trying to examine here, right?
Like, sometimes our abusers, unfortunately, are people that we love. And you mourn them. You're relieved.
You mourn them. But also, like, it's also complex. And, like, that would be really interesting for her to go through this journey.
At the end of a do-a-da, and also, like, for that to be something that is instilled upon Sam, you know?
Yeah.
I mean, it's very clear why Sam has fucked up complicated feelings or would in a fantasy fanfic setting.
Sorry.
Because of the show that these books were based on.
And so, you know, like, you're hung up naked in shackles by a man, but also it's the man you were told you need to seek validation from your whole life.
Exactly.
And you see that with Tyrion, you see that from Danny.
Like, of course you're going to be, yeah, it's like, of course there's complexity when
your abuser dies.
It's the thing you, I mean, and again, I love media.
I love media where you kill your abuser.
Andor this year, that was a treat for me.
Andor this year was a treat for me with killing your abuser content.
Like, give me a show, a book, or whatever, where a woman gets to.
killer abuser. I do love that shit.
I do. But there is
complexity behind it. There's guilt. There's
weird feelings behind it.
Yeah. I don't know.
And that's allowed. And that's what, I don't know,
life is messy.
Yeah. So something
else that I think is interesting about this quote
because I was double-checking
with Shakespeare references, right?
Because of course, you know,
very obviously it's a reference to
Shakespeare's Henry IV, part two,
the line uneasy. Wait, do you like
Shakespeare? I don't know. Maybe.
I don't know is actually like a really good
answer for that question. No, I love Shakespeare. Sorry, everyone.
I know you do. I kind of like the I don't know
answer. It was convincing for a second, wasn't it? The line
uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.
But interestingly, a lot of people
actually bring up this line, this quote, this paragraph
in the context of John Janaris
with the whole like, you know, if he had lived, I might have married him.
and like about Egan being closer to your age.
Yeah, I see that.
So I do think that's there.
That's funny.
I think there's a lot of that fun playfulness that George is doing and a lot of shit.
Yeah.
In the front of this book especially.
But like in the beginning, he's making all these comments.
Like there's something we'll come back to him in Tyrion one next year that or like the year after.
Who the fuck knows?
That is like interesting to me where Illyrio said something about the king fucked the bed servant that he sends to fuck Tyrion.
But he doesn't say which king.
And I'm like, oh, Vesaris, clearly, because we know it was Vesaris,
because we just watched him fuck that girl at Alirio's Mance.
But kind of fun because he's saying the king fucked her, or the king fucked her when he was here.
And Tyrion's like, okay, what king?
Like, he has no fucking clue and he doesn't fucking care because he's despairing right now.
Because there's like five kings.
He's probably thinking Robert.
Yeah, there's like 80 kings right now.
I'm sure.
But it was Viceris.
And that also, then there's a line about nieces and nephews, he says.
and I'm like, okay, Illyrio, Blackfire Mopad is.
Also, I'm sure that, like, Terry and Robert have actually fucked the same woman at some point.
I think there's been over a lot.
Oh, at least like ten times.
They live in the same city and they fuck a lot.
Yeah.
I think they, like, you know, they patron the same places, so.
Mm-hmm.
I think it's happening.
Danny thinks of the slave children that the masters nailed along the road from young Kai
and how it was a child for every mile
and then her response,
163 masters for every mile in return
and how long it had lasted
and the flies and the stench
and she thinks
some days she feared
she had not gone far enough
regrets, no regrets
or full regrets.
Only regrets about not going far enough
I guess, I don't know.
Right, go farther.
The Miranese had freed their slaves
but rehired them for basically starvation wages, abandoning the vulnerable.
The great masters scorned Denaries from their pyramids,
blaming her for the city's beggars to rule she must win over people that she very much dislikes.
So we're probably going to bring this up a lot throughout these chapters,
but I'm going to say it first, and then we'll come back to it later,
but this is, it's referenced to sharecropping in the aftermath of,
the American Civil War.
And I will say, like, you know, the great masters were like,
oh, a city's full of beggars, thieves and sex workers.
I'm like, maybe if you didn't set up such a shitty system,
your cities would be full of people with jobs and food and farms
that could provide for everyone so they wouldn't have to be beggars.
But, like, I don't know.
What do I know?
I'm just a girl.
I'm just a 14-year-old girl.
Oh, my God, who knows little of the ways of war.
real it is interesting because unfortunately she's stepping into a place where there is no infrastructure for that it was only built to slave and enslave what if it was a bad system everyone that's all resnack i mean but we know that
yeah we know it is and that only gets us far enough knowing that look at the world we're in right now we know that it's not a good system what's going on right now and that's only gotten us so far
It's because everyone is trying to be like, what if we went back to that?
We're like, but guys, that sucked.
I just don't know.
Resnack Mo Resnack flatters Danny.
He shows up.
He's clad in marooned silk and perfume.
Skahasmo Kandak, now he's bald.
He's called the Shave Pate.
This is his transformation, his superhero story, if you will, Eliana.
He urges action against the Sons of the Harpy, and he tells her that more will die like
stalwart until the old slaving family,
Zach, Ascar, Gazine, Merak, Lorak, even the now woman-led Paul house are held accountable.
He says, women do not forget.
Women do not forgive.
And we have the line from Danny.
No, Danny thought.
And the usurper's dogs will learn that when I return to Westeros.
A lot going on here.
The shave paint naming all these houses, I was like, oh, is this a threat itself?
When you talked about Galazagalar, I think the shave paint also has a lot.
of this, right? Where he's urging action saying, if you don't do it, this will happen. In some ways,
you start to realize, but the council room's not a very open forum for all of them, right? I do also
like the callout of House Paul, now being women led, and we start soon to understand what
happened to them in the future. But it's interesting, not 1-1, not likening it 1-1, but it reminds
you a bit of like after the dance, all of the widows that are left after the wars and after the
different battles, you start to kind of see and mimic the Westeros set up too of what happens
with war and what happens in the country when you kill off a generation and how that behaves
in response, not unlike the Starks, right, with the entire rebellion and how that rose.
Something really interesting here is happening with the whole looks being deceiving thing.
We have this whole passage about how Resnach is being called out as like a simp flatterer to
Denaries and how she doesn't trust him. And she's like, oh, he's too fucking much. He's over-eager.
He's perfumed. He's kind of gross. And he didn't shave his head. He's just bald. Like, he's just
bald as fuck where shave-pate and his men shave their heads and they're acting super eager about
the new world and fitting into it and being like, yes, we very much support your new world
Denaries and we're shaving our head to prove it. No more of our wings, our winged hair, as most
these men have. So there's this comparison of like the natural baldness of Resnack
to Scaha's shaving his head. And there's something interesting going on and like later when
the shave paint is fired and how there's a lot of reactions. You know, there's the famed
Adam Feldman theorizing of shave paint with the honeyed locusts. Could be. I don't know that I have
like a real opinion. I might by the time we get there, but I don't know that I have a real
opinion on that yet. But it's interesting that Danny feels very against Reznak and like she's more
likened to Scahas because I kind of think he seems over-eager in his way. And you see his reaction when he's
fired. I kind of think it's a bait and switch that George likes to pull because we've got a few
of these throughout the chapter where things aren't as they seem that I kind of wonder if
Reznak is actually the somewhat loyal one. Right? That's your big red hair.
of like, it's not Resnack, he's just like this little dude.
He's just a guy.
He's just a guy.
I don't know.
Something feels really off there and, like, maybe we're misjudging Resnack.
You know, maybe we should be supporting the natural bald man.
I don't know.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Like, there's something about Scahas.
Like, so, like, Scahas could, like, secretly be part of the whole thing, you know, with the Sons of the Harpy and stuff.
I know some people also say it could be Gala Zagalare, because she's a woman and the Harvey's woman.
I'm like, that's an interesting idea too, right?
But I am kind of like, yeah, maybe Skahas was like secretly not pro freedom.
Because like, yeah, like Feldman talks about maybe the piece is real, though.
I think in later years, and this kind of framing makes sense to me.
People have said the peace is not real.
It's not a true piece because it's built on acquiescing to slavery, which is true, which is true.
Thank you to people who've pointed that out.
But, like, you know, the idea of, like, they're not being the active violence in the streets.
And Denarius just wants people to stop killing the freedmen.
Yeah.
That is a real want of a kind of what she perceives as peace.
But I am looking back on it as, like, because George is drawing so much from, like, reconstruction,
era. He's also drawing from other things, which again, we'll come into my criticism
later, but looking back on it, should I've just known that Scott Hawes was actually aligned
with, like, the harpies, because he's shaving his head, and I'm like, so he's a fucking
skinhead, and they're all wearing masks and, like, hiding their identity, the Brazen Beast,
like the KKK, and I'm like, was it just staring me in the face the whole time?
even though technically, according to some, being a skinhead was actually appropriated
by the white supremacist because it used to be a statement made by alternative subcultures
and not alt-right, just like, you know, normal alternative subcultures, like the punks
and ska, and actually Jamaican immigrant youth specifically, who are not all white.
So I'm just saying, like, you know, I'm just like, should it have been, was it in my face
that they were skinheads the whole time?
I don't know.
Am I thinking too deeply?
Am I crazy?
I really don't think I've ever thought of it.
I don't think you're crazy.
I think that's a very interesting choice,
especially because like he's choosing to do it intentionally.
Yeah, I don't know.
There's something there,
especially the idea of like them putting on masks,
them putting on robes,
them going out and like obscuring their identity.
Yeah, there's something going on there.
Even if it's not a like one one exact comparison,
there's definitely something going on.
That's, like, an idea.
There's, I don't know.
And then, like, it's such, like, smoke and mirrors.
Everything he's doing, it feels very smoke and mirrors.
Like, he's there to advise.
He's there to give context, but, like, the context he's giving.
I don't know.
It's interesting.
I'm not sure yet.
And we're going to really navel gaze about this together as we go forward, I'm sure, in the next weeks.
Yeah, it's fascinating because, like, you know, the KKK, they obviously, like, hide, right?
That's why they're hiding their identities.
But at the same time, are they as crafty as that?
Like, sometimes it's like, you just fucking know.
You're like, that guy's a white supremacist.
They're not very good at hiding it, you know?
Yeah, usually they have tattoos up and down their fucking body with dog whistles.
Every time I see one, I'm like, oh, you're terrible.
Got it.
There's nothing like a culture that comes together against Nazis, though.
Love that.
We need more of that.
I should really learn, like, more about what those look like for my personal safety.
Yeah.
And a lot of the times you can kind of, like, call it out of tattoos easily when you see it, though.
Like, there is something about, I don't know.
Yeah.
I digress.
It's a vibe.
Okay.
Also, a question.
What happens when there are no usurper's dogs when she gets to Westeros?
Has anyone thought about that?
Because, by the way, there are no usurper's dogs anymore.
Westeros has gone dog-free.
even Sandor he's gone
It's a good question
It's a good question
An important one
Arguably Jamie would be
Maybe one of them
But otherwise, you know
It's an important question
Well I don't care what happens to him
But just kidding
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha I'm kidding
It's a question
We're laughing
Like the only other one that you could argue
And he obviously was part of it
Because he was actually a baby
even though you and I joke about being a baby during all this.
Like, Tyrion was actually like a baby during all this.
Just not fair.
Not a baby.
He was just a kid.
Anyway, the line about how women do not forget nor forgive.
It's fun with the context of Lady Stoneheart.
Like, she don't speak, but she remember.
But also, we see the way that other storylines kind of unravel around this idea throughout this, like, Sansa.
Sansa has an aspect of, like, that remembrance.
right, especially because like House Royce is probably going to be coming into her storyline
and this idea of preserving memory.
Aria, of course, very much, she's a little like her mom slash dead mom and the whole
we do not forgive and we do not forget idea.
And like the way that Ceres has been going about things as well, right?
She does not forget.
She does not forgive whether or not you actually fucking did it.
She does not forget and she does not forgive.
And she's definitely not going to forget and forgive after her walk.
of shame.
So I'm not including Arianne because she's being silly.
And I'm also not including Riann because she's got other things she's dealing with.
But, you know, Arianne.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Even though in that one T.
Wow chapter, she's like, how could Danny have killed her brother?
Ha ha.
I'm just asking for a friend who might want to kill her brother.
Oh, wait.
He's already dead thanks to Danny.
Shwoop.
And she's like, I did not forget and forgive that because I wanted to do it.
How could you take that?
No, she does sit up.
It's not fair.
She's just being silly, you know, girlhood is hard.
Oh, my God.
She's, like, older than we are.
Okay, she's, like, 23.
So true, she is.
She would be, like, buying underage meat drinks somewhere.
Okay.
Glossing over that.
Let's talk about House Paul and why they fucking hate Danny.
House Paul.
House of Paul.
hates denaries house
Osnack of Gucci
yeah the house of Osnack
the house of Paul
Osnack Paul was slain by
Balwafs his father
died at the gates during the battle for the city
and three uncles were hanged among
the 163 masters
interesting you have three of them
in your family
Resnach
and Skahas have different messages
Scahas is like vengeance
kill one man from each family if the
Killings continue, kill two men from each family, except for House Paul, who no longer has man to kill.
Resnack is like, this brutality invites divine wrath.
I will find the culprits for you, Danaries.
I don't believe that either.
I'm sure he'll try his best.
Oh, Reznak.
Despite his usefulness, Danny distrusts him.
And she's like, all she can think about is the undying prophecy.
She thinks that Miri was the first betrayal, Jora was the second.
Could Reznak, Scahas, Dario, or what about Barris and her Missande be the third betrayal?
She thinks Scahas and she instructs Reznak to try bribing people instead, and she ascends her marble steps as Misande gives her big announcement.
And again, was Mary the first betrayal?
Was Jura a betrayal?
No one knows, that's prophecy, baby.
we get the announcement of Danny
All kneel for Denary's Stormborn
The Unburnt
The Queen of Marine
Queen of the Andles and the Roynar
And the First Men Calisi
Of the Great Grass Sea
Breaker of Shackles and Mother of Dragons
Yeah
So many titles
The Insullied paved the broom
Holding shields and spears
And the Miranese gather beneath the windows
Her freedmen stand far apart
from their former masters.
And there's a line here of until they stand together,
Marine will know no peace.
She commands the hall, rises, sitting on her bench.
Custom demands that she begin with the Ostapori envoy, Lord Gale.
Lord of what, no one knows?
And Lord Gail brings a gift of slippers from Cleon to Great
that, like, De Neri's, I guess, out of politeness,
just wears the whole time.
She's like, I hate these shoes are so small.
These are terrible.
But she wears them the whole time
She thanks King Cleon for his lovely gift
Though they're so tiny
They could be made for a child
I mean she is a child
And Lord Gail says Cleon is ready to defend
The mother of dragons from her foes
All right
We have a line of
If he proposes again that I wed King Cleon
I'll throw a slipper at his head
Danny thought
But for once the Ostapori Envoy made no mention
of a royal marriage
I do love that
I know there have been some comparisons
to be aughts in politics before in this story
but I don't agree
but one thing I agree at is
she wants to hit Bush with a fucking shoot
that's what George is saying here
and by the way
they hit him with both shoes
motherfucker the worst kind of disrespect
oh man
sorry Bush hating I got really excited
Not that bush.
I love that kind of bush, but that bush, no way.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, man, you're right.
I do think this is kind of like that.
I do think that has to be like a hit him in the fucking head.
Lord Gale says the time has come to end the reign of the wise masters of Yonkeh.
Sworn foes to those living in freedom.
Cleon says he and his new one, Solid, will soon march.
She says Cleon would be wise to tend to his own girls.
garden and let the young kai tend to their own.
While the masters of young kai, of course, returned to slaving pretty much immediately.
Like, she got like a mile out and they were like, all right, as we were.
Cleon was no better, though.
He restored slavery to Astopor in the opposite direction.
The slaves were now masters and the masters were now slaves.
So President coined of him.
It's a very slippery slope.
Yeah, actually.
It's a slippery slope as Danny is about to govern for the end of the chapter, right?
It's very easy to accidentally,
now you're the masters and they're the slaves.
We have this line.
I am only a young girl and no little of the ways of war,
she told Lord Gale.
But we have heard that Astapur is starving.
Let King Cleon feed his people before he leads them out to battle.
She makes a gesture of dismissal and Gail withdraws.
Up next, the noble Hizdar Zolorak.
once more wishes to speak to Danny
he's been attending her many times
in the last few weeks
he enters and he bows at the same spot
where stalwart shield
had lain dead the previous evening
love that very metaphorical
real poetical
right like clearly
clearly it means something
a k a.k.a.
this is what you're trading
for your peace
his star is a wealthy merchant
he has many friends
not just here but across
the seas in Marine. And did she mention he's like really rich and would almost be hot if he'd just
shave his head? Worse, it turns out he could get richer if only she would grant his petition
and open up the fighting pits. By the way, he owns most of them. Insider trading. Insider trading.
The noble man had wings of wiry red black hair sprouting from his temples. They made him look as
of his head were about to take flight.
His long face was made even
longer by a beard bound with rings
of gold. His purple
tocar was fringed with amethysts and pearls.
I'm serious, I love, like, the beard
rings. I think that's so fun. Good job, George.
I love the idea of it. Like, I think that, like,
in general, we could bring back beard rings.
I think beard decor is so exciting.
I do. I love it. I'm going to run fair
this weekend, and I can't wait to see some fucking
beard decor I love when people put shit
their beards. I legit think like that should be a thing. Yeah, why not? You should fancy
it up. I think we're like hopefully moving or deciding that direction. You know, people talk about
like beard oil and things like that. And I think that beard rings are just the next step. I bought so
many men beard oil. Oh really? So exhausting. Interesting. So many of them. Yeah. I have blow dried out.
I've blown out many men's beards in my life. Interesting. Interesting.
Yeah, rings into it.
A little roundbrush action, guys, a little decor.
Denieres refuses his Dar's request to reopen the fighting pits for the sixth time.
Rejecting his repeated arguments.
He's all like, they're an ancient Miranese tradition, religious sacrifice, a show of strength,
a way to judge criminals, and good for trade and revenue.
His door flatters her, but she remains unmoved.
Resnach whispers,
The city would take 10% of profits, and she can,
counters, it'll be before taxes, not after.
And she's like, still no.
And I'm like, Denaries, I watched Gladiator 2 and you're right.
Let's not do it.
I know Pedro Pascal's in it, but not worth it.
In retrospect, as I reread this chapter, am I supposed...
The worst fact you can be in.
I know, right?
Am I supposed to be seeing this as analogous to the attorneys?
I don't actually think it's like a good analogy.
and they're like not the same because slavery, but I'm like, am I supposed to be reading it that way?
Yeah, I do think so in some aspects.
It's not unlike Ternies.
A few more people might die, but like...
A fun?
No, not a fun, honey.
There's no fun.
It's not brunch.
I mean, there's no murder at brunch, but...
Oh, my God.
Asterisk, and I do think you're correct there.
It reminds me of that, and like, they're heroes, right, that we need at the beginning.
They're supposed to be heroes.
They're supposed to be the heroes with the swords, the knights in shining armor, the very
silliness of throwing someone out.
It actually reminds me, not Hot D again.
When Rainies tells Corleys in Hot D at the tourney, she's like, oh, they're summer nights.
They're, this is, they've never seen war, a very Catalan line that was given, but they've
never seen war.
This is them playing at war to entertain, playing at war to keep the war from.
within their walls
and
there is something interesting there too of
like
Danny is like
well I would be doing this
instead of this with it by the way
if we did it if we did it
as a risk
she's already half folded
and she doesn't know it yet
yeah
yeah
she is
there's a line way later
I think in like
in like Danny 9
or Danny Ten, there's a line where she's talking to Barcina and she's like, they're talking
about the ways that this is like fine, this is whatever.
And Barcina and her discuss like, it's better this than war, right?
Like, isn't it better to kill a couple people at dinner?
I'm just kidding.
Instead of, you know, thousands of men at war.
I feel like it sucks because people are actually dying, but was it supposed to be about
sports?
I don't know.
I've got all sorts of analogies today.
Well, I also was thinking that, like, because.
as I'm an Eagles and Lions fan.
And we're a sports podcast now.
I think about those guys and like, yeah, the X that I dated that played football in high school.
And it turns out he was an abusive idiot asshole because he had anger management issues.
But also like, he had been hit in the head a lot.
So like, I'm not saying I excused all of his issues, but like, you know, they get hit in the head a lot.
And I'm not saying it to be funny for once.
I'm always being a jester on this podcast with y'all.
But like, I'm being serious.
Like, he would get concussed all the time.
Like, yeah.
Yeah.
That doesn't mean it's okay that he was like emotionally abusive, but I do get it.
Like, why do you think they pay them so much money and let them retire at age 34?
It's not because they've had a hell of a good time for 12 years.
Yeah, it's because the body can't really take it.
Yeah.
They gave their bodies.
Like, and it's similar to labor, right?
Like, it's labor.
They're sold between teams, you know?
Yeah.
And people watch it
For a lark
Yeah
Like us
Yeah
You also said something about
Summer nights
And I don't know
I went on a whole fucking
Like other rabbit hole
For two seconds
But
Uh oh
So summer nights
I'm like
Completely wrong on the timing
Wella
Tell you more
Tell me more
Like this you have a car
Tell me more
Tell me more
Did you get very far
Ah
Ha
Davos fingers did this.
Oh, yeah.
Remember?
They did.
Yeah.
God.
A moment of silence for our boys.
Or was it only that?
I was going to say in blue, but I'm like, that's inappropriate.
Either way.
Oh, no.
Not appropriate.
So, yeah, De Neri's also, as you said, she thinks about his dar and how he would be handsome, if not for, like, his terrible hair.
Which I think it's hilarious that he kind of styles it, like, Drogon wing style.
but I'm pretty sure
like
is the way that she thinks
of how his czar would be
attractive without the hair
how people think of
Dario
just a thought
and they're wrong
they are wrong
so there's that
there's that
and there's also
Resnock and the green
grace pushing Denarius to marry a noble
she briefly considers his dar
again for the reason stated
and thinks I guess he's better than the
shave paint who had once offered to
discard his wife for her.
What a nice guy.
Grosdan Zogalari.
Cousin to the peace
preaching priestess, the green
grace, asks for
gold. Like other great masters,
he wants compensation for the lost
slaves. He wants
owned an old weaver who
train girls and now that they're freed
they've opened a shop and he claims a share
of their profits. And when Danny's
like, all right, what's the weaver's name?
He can barely recall
It's just one of the many that he owned
Now
Yeah
I don't care what happens here
And what we're about to read to you
I don't care about the morality of any of it
Or who's right or who's wrong
All I'm going to say is yeah boy
Yeah
This is like it gets me so excited
It's not good for the whole scenario it seems
But
But yeah boy
Danny says
Let us say Elsa
Here is our
ruling. From the girls, you shall have nothing. It was Elsa who taught them weaving, not you.
From you, the girls shall have a new loom. The finest coin can buy. That is for forgetting the name of the old
woman. Teach your slaver's manners. Good job, Dan. Yeah. Yeah, okay. It's not like, in the long
run, I'm like, hmm, but in the short run, I'm like, yeah, get his ass. It's like so fun. It's so fun
on a first read because like yeah it feels good it feels fucking good and like I don't think she's
wrong for telling them this yeah I just don't think you can make someone buy a loom for forgetting
someone's name I think she's just don't she's justified in doing this but she should have said
something in exchange for all the profit that you got from their labor in the past I just I think
that would have like stood better but it feels good it feels good um also yeah
but because she didn't do that
I'm like is this why they don't take her seriously
but also she's a 14 year old girl
and like as someone who is a 14 year old girl
would I take me seriously?
I don't know
I respect the hell out of Danny
she would be 19 with a five year gap
I respect 19 year old woman more
no offense
and that's the thing like it all is coming off
is very arbitrary
right all of this is very arbitrary
her rulings are not balanced.
They're not consistent as we go through each of these.
And it's not a very easy situation to judge, right?
Like, it's a complex situation.
Everyone's somewhat different.
But they're all kind of the same in the end that they are looking for, well, the masters
are looking mostly for reparations for getting their slaves stolen from them,
which is backwards.
Yeah, I'm like, masters don't deserve reparations.
And slaves are looking, are freedmen.
are looking for reparations as well, right, from their time being enslaved.
So it's a very hard balance to strike.
And then, like, it really sucks that she told everyone not to ever question her in public,
Beau, too, because, like, yes, she can't be seen as weak.
But also, where are advising?
Where advise?
Who advise?
Where advise?
None of this is, it's arbitrary.
It's inconsistent.
It's not a good front because each of these ends up a little different.
Yeah, she also doesn't have any people who would be very good at advising her in some of this anyway, but also like...
Yeah, she has no one.
It's difficult because also, like, I'm sorry, this is just, like, not a sustainable legal system, and it's not like, she didn't come up with it, right?
This is just the way that she sold the legal system is supposed to work, but I'm like, to rule individually on each one of these without, like, any sort of set guidelines on what...
the laws are like arguably this is what standard operating too like with the other like the end
the bones they're like everyone with bone problems will go to the temple and that's the first time
they standard operating procedures that's true but she needs some SOPs she needs some governance
like to guide here like what is the rule the rules seem arbitrary we gotta like sit down
write down like you know I don't know some 10 commandments or some shit right like it's a starting point
And like...
A declaration, if you will.
Yeah, make some amendments.
But like...
Ha!
Girls be amending.
That's what they say.
Oh, she's 14 years old in the 14th Amendment.
Interesting.
Or is she 15?
No, she's like 15 now.
I don't know.
Whatever.
No, I'm 11, so she's like that.
So, yeah, I don't know.
Like, they needed to set something...
And sure, sometimes it is like,
that, right? Like, you go through the other legal systems that exist nowadays, and the judge
kind of has to, like, rule how they decide on some things based on what's there. But they do
have, like, there's a set of laws that they all studied and are trying to abide by, but she's just
kind of, it's vibes. It is led a little bit by her emotions. As a very emotional 14-year-old
girl, I get it. Yeah. And other people were bad also. You know, it's just like not
Yeah. It's not a good system. And also it would make her probably feel a lot better if we just made a better. I mean, this is what Egan the second was doing, right? He was also going by vibes. And she didn't come up with the system. She insists on alternating the petitioners, the former slaves and the masters. That's actually a pretty good system. I like that idea. Most are seeking redress, as you pointed out. The city's poorer districts face chaos. There's looting, murder, and hunger. Her unsulling.
have restored some order, but clearly problems still remain.
A noble woman returns after fleeing in the battle to find her home now a brothel.
It's workers wearing her gowns and jewels.
Again, slay.
Danny orders the jewels return to the owner, but the woman had abandoned the house, so she's just got to get over it.
I don't know.
I like the idea that the former sex slaves now have their own business and took her gowns and jewels.
Maybe I shouldn't.
Like, oh, God, I also would rule on vibes.
Let's be real.
A freedman accuses a noble of House Jacques,
Zocke, of impregnating his wife when she was his bed slave,
when she was that nobles bed slave.
The freedman demands a gelding and gold of the nobleman,
and Danny grants the gold,
but she doesn't agree for the gelding because by old law, it wasn't rape.
Another scenario.
These are all, like, difficult scenarios.
A scarred boy.
easy. Yeah, tells about how his father's slaves killed his family during the sack,
and one of them now lives in his house, and another has joined the mother's men, and he wants
both of those people hanged. And we have this line here of I'm Queen over a city built on dust
and death. Danny had no choice but to deny him. Yeah, she had declared a blanket pardon
during the sack for any crimes committed.
Oh, the purge.
Which I think kind of, yeah, I mean, a law, right?
But I think that kind of has fucked her at the same time with all of this.
So she decided she wouldn't punish slaves for rising against their masters.
And I do think that you kind of are seeing something, a disparity, right, between the freedmen and nobles.
And by handing out arbitrarily these kind of like, okay, you get this, you get this.
You don't get this.
You don't get this.
It's not building relations, right?
Because here we see the boy rush at her and his feet get tangled in the tocar, which absolutely has to be a metaphor.
And he goes sprawling and strong bellwoss is on him at once restraining him and maybe beating him.
And Danny calls for him to be released and she's like, you should treasure that tokar for it saved your life.
Again, metaphorical, it probably has many times, but maybe not anymore.
And they'll forget what happened here.
And we have this line, this poignant line.
This is like a haunting line, truly.
But as he left, the boy looked back over his shoulder.
And when she saw his eyes, Danny thought the harpy has another son.
That Tokar like saving his life, but also being what condemned his family in some aspects, right?
As a class signifier.
Yeah, there's something really real there.
Yeah, I don't know, this is very difficult.
There's a lot to govern here.
And how do you do it non-arbitrarily?
That's the big question.
It's, yeah, it's a very difficult situation, and it's exactly, I think, I'm happy for you, George.
You know, I think a five-year gap would have been really interesting, but clearly this is kind of the questions that you wanted to explore when you talk about Aragon's tax policy.
Like, this is literally that.
And obviously, you know, George has some interesting ideas, but also, George is not a policymaker, as we can see from some of these.
And I actually, yeah, I do think this is a great mind.
of all the different kinds of complex decisions.
Denaries has to weigh, and, again, maybe monarchy, like, it's not the best governing system.
Because, you know, besides the blanket pardon on acts that were committed during, you know, the sack,
how it, when we're talking about the consistency, right, of this legal system, she would have to tell the boy,
not only does the house no longer belong to him, but to the former slaves,
but she has to do so in order to keep precedent
with telling that other Miranese noble woman earlier
that her home turned brothel is no longer her home.
That would be the consistency, the precedent that is set
by that earlier ruling for this, right?
And I'm sorry, like, I'm not a lawyer, so
I could be very wrong about all these, but I'm just saying, I'm just saying.
And, yeah, Denarius, she's thinking of herself as a queen over a city of dust and death.
And I do find that language a little interesting because that's, it reminds me of what
Erie said when he's like, I don't know, let him be the king of ashes when it comes to
king's landing. And ashes are kind of a dust, maybe even death.
It brings me back to that line that she had that she doesn't want to rule over a kingdom
that's ash and bones and dust and pain, right?
She doesn't want that, yet here she is, ruling over a city of dust and death, ruling over exactly what she didn't want.
She wants happy people, right?
She says she wants happy families, happy people, happy ladies, happy nights.
And this is not that.
This is not that.
And the people are alive, right?
They are not bones.
They are not dead.
It's just difficult.
and when we taught when I likeed it to the phrase that Eerie says like I hope no one takes that out of context
I'm not saying that they're the same I'm like literally not saying that they're the same I'm just saying
it's interesting because as you said right like DeNeres doesn't want that and she's really sad that
the city is like this but she has no idea how to make it not like this because no one taught her
agriculture and again
cutting her some slack
because turns out she is trying to
restart the grain trade which is correct
but like they only taught her
war right like no one taught
her as you said earlier
infrastructure like
do they not have agriculture
and marine I know that we like got rid of
and burned all the olive trees but like what if
we I don't know
restarted something
what if we like farmed something
I'm very much
oversimplifying it. I'm not a fucking farmer. I don't know how things work. I mean, it's
three to seven years for a new olive tree, Eliana. You know what? We could have had a new
olive tree in five years. Get away from me. Is what it sounds like to me.
George. George. Take this going away from me. You're trying to say, George, take this
woman away from me. No, I'm over here saying he should have planted the fucking trees.
Oh.
God.
Wow.
I'm on your side.
I'll always be on your side.
Wow.
When will George be on my side?
He has the chance.
When Hoshara is canon.
Oh, my God.
And then I ditch your bitch ass.
Bye.
The day Hoshara is canon.
It's over for you, bitches.
Do you all know that?
The day.
Thank you.
Agree.
Bye, Miss Chloe Pie.
Powell and Oshara.
Oh, what kind of pie would I be?
I don't know.
I don't know what kind of pie you like.
My favorite kinds of pie are lemon meringue and key lime pies.
So maybe you'd be one of those.
That's so you.
That's so you.
Holy shit.
I was thinking you were a meringue because you're a freak like that.
Oh.
You're such a freak.
I love you.
So by midday, Denarius feels the crown's weight on her head and she skips lunch.
She nibbles at flatbread, olives, figs, and cheese, and mediocre wine,
because, as Eliana mentioned, there's been a bit of a fire sale on the orchards.
And by fire sale, I mean, the masters burnt the orchards, the better vineyards, at least, were burnt.
So no good wine. The wine's not great.
DeNaris is like, well, we're not trading that shit, apparently.
Petitioners continue through the day.
We have a sculptor who wants to replace the harpy's head with Danny's likeness, and she politely declines.
A fisherman gifts her a massive pike.
She rewards him with silver and sends the fish to the kitchens.
And a copper smith presents a very beautiful decorative but absolutely useless battle suit to her.
A beautiful burnished copper that would give you a way on any battlefield.
Not that it would matter because she'd be roasting them, hopefully, from above.
She jokes with Barriston and she's like, I think I know the quality a king needs the most barristen.
And he's like, what?
And she's like, an iron butt, motherfucker, because this bench sucks.
This bench hurts so bad
My butt cheeks are numb
It's hard
You know, I'm like
She's like me
We got flat butts
It hurts
And next come
23 claims of livestock
That have allegedly
Allegedly been eaten by her dragons
And Reznak
Suggests turning them away
But De Neri says no
They should all be heard
And though some claims seem like
They could be false
She compensates them
acknowledging her dragons have growing appetites, but going forward she commands such claims
be sworn before the gods at the Temple of Graces, and one man lingers, a squat, wind-burnt figure,
clutching a sad cloth sack, staring at the floor lost. No, like that's real. I've heard that
from people. Having an ass helps. Yeah, I didn't want to ruin this moment, but I did want to comment
to your earlier comments.
I don't have your problems
because I have a fat ass.
It's the real solution.
So benches are great.
I love a bench.
Just be kicked up.
Yeah, just get kicked up, Elia.
Tea, I guess.
Yeah, and she's only eating
like figs and cheese, so.
True.
I wonder what the poops are like, man.
Anyway, we have
the saddest end passage.
Holy shit, watery.
Literally.
And what does this one want?
Danny wondered.
All kneel for Denarius Stormborn, the Unburnt, Queen of Marine, Queen of the Andles and the Roynar, and the First Man, Calisi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Shackles, Mother of Dragons, cried Missande in her high, sweet voice.
That was a high sweet voice.
Thank you.
It's my, like, Chibuya Yussa voice.
As Danny stood, her to car began to slip. She caught it and tugged it.
and tugged it back in place.
You, with the sack.
Did you wish to speak with us?
You may approach.
When he raised his head,
his eyes were red and raw as open sores.
Danny glimpsed Sir Barriston sliding closer,
a white shadow, at her side.
The man approached in a stumbling shuffle,
one step and then another,
clutching his sack.
Is he drunk or ill, she wondered?
There was dirt beneath his cracked.
yellow fingernails.
What is it?
Do you have some grievance to lay before us?
Some petition?
What would you have of us?
His tongue flickered nervously over chapped, cracked lips.
I...
I brought...
Bones?
Burnt bones?
He lifted the sack and spilled its contents on the marble.
Bones they were.
Broken bones and blackened.
The longer ones had been cracked open for their marrow.
It were the blackened.
one. The man said in a Giskarri growl. The winged shadow. He come down from the sky and
and...
No. Danny shivered. No. No. Oh, no. Are you deaf fool? Reznakma Reznak demanded of the
man. Did you not hear my pronouncement? See my factors on the morrow and you shall
be paid for your sheep. Reznak, Sir Barristan said quietly.
hold your tongue and open your eyes those are no sheep bones no danny thought those are the bones of a child
what a way to fucking end the first chapter dude that's like george did that he did that okay george i'm sorry for
everything i said this chapter i mean not last week we wouldn't have had this we wouldn't have had this without a five-year gap
She would have just fucking flown away this chapter.
You know, brings me back to that quote.
We wouldn't have had it with a fun-year gap, is what I meant.
There we go.
I knew where you were somewhat going.
I kind of know where the GPS is set most of the time, okay?
It'll get her there, one way or another.
Brings you back to a game of Thrones.
This is war.
This is what it looks like.
This is the price of the Iron Throne, or at least that's what she thinks, right?
Is it?
Is it?
It's a good callback, especially, like, because, you know, we're thinking about
the food scarcity and, like, all these sheep's being eaten and people.
Oh, they're the same.
We talked about that at the beginning of this chapter.
It is the same.
It is the same.
How long are you and I going to milk that fucking joke?
You'll find, ask me again in 10 years.
Oh, my God.
I think I say that sometimes actually in my everyday life and no one knows.
Oh, I do.
I say a lot of things, unfortunately, from this podcast every day and no one gets it.
I'm like, it is the same.
Speaking of things that may or may not be the same, I feel, I feel like there's something
happening here in the equation, like, or the equivalency that they're drawing between the
sheep and the children.
Obviously, like, children are not sheep, but it comes to mind when I think of other things
that happen in, like, fire and blood, right?
around like the shepherd and the shepherd proselytizing against like the Targaryen reign or whatever.
So something, I feel like something's happening here.
And it really stands out to me that what we see in this chapter is like, this man has no ask.
He's not asking for payment or anything.
He only says what he has brought.
He doesn't ask for justice.
And like what can he even ask for, right?
Like what could be worth the same as the life of his child and what does
justice even look like in this situation when the state's carelessness has led to your child
being burned and eaten? Like, he doesn't have anything to say. It's just grief.
And Danny of all people should understand that, right? Look at a Game of Thrones, Danny.
7, 8, 9, 10.
True.
7, 8, 9. Why did it eat 9? It brings me back to that. What is that quote? Hold on.
What is the life of one bastard boy worth
I was thinking that originally
but then I was like what's the next quote
also related which is Logan Roy
where he says what could you possibly kill
that you love so much it would make the sun rise again
which is Danny 7 8 910
with Drogo in a Game of Thrones right
where she was willing to kill anything to bring him back
and here you have Reznak who jumps to the first
the first thing is like, didn't you hear?
We said, take it to the temple, freak.
And Danny's like, oh no, embarrassing's like, oh no.
And guess what?
You can't take that anywhere.
There's nowhere that will go.
That grief, that pain.
Yeah.
That haunts you.
Danny knows because she's sitting here right now.
Shadows all around her.
White ones, gray ones, black ones, brown ones, any shadow haunting her.
Well, something you said about, like, the taking it of the temple made me realize, you know.
We talk about De Neri's and the loneliness of gods, but that is kind of something that we're seeing there too.
Right, right, because people would sacrifice their sheep to the gods.
You just let it go and you're like, the God has taken it and it's going to that and I don't get to eat it.
But the sacrifice of children, which I don't know, allegedly happened in some or like God asked for it and I was like,
well, sorry, that was just a test.
I was just testing you.
No, no, don't kill Isaac.
He's so cute.
Or Ishmael, depending.
Oh, my God.
Look at his cute pink little skin.
Um, yeah.
So, yeah.
Honestly, one of my family members just named their newborn baby Isaac.
And I'm like, oh, interesting.
Are we binding him?
Are we, just kidding.
Are we going to, are we going to traumatize him?
Just a little.
Just like we're traumatized?
Just, no, we're not okay.
Yeah.
I like the biblical aspect.
the idea of like a shepherd like Danny is a shepherd this is her flock right and her
flock is very pissed at each other yeah she just very much have a flock she's very yeah I think
like there's something here that's kind of exploring her a little as like an old testament
god kind of thing despite the messianic stuff about her being you know as you said and as lord
said a prettier Jesus oh yeah sorry Lord did say that can't wait till Lord 20 at the end
of the month oh my gosh um I'm gonna be floating you guys I can't wait I'm
seeing her again. Yeah, she is the Jesus. She, the Jesus. What is that from? What is that from?
You, you're the one who knows. I'm quoting you quoting the Lord. The Jesus. There's a mother that calls
Jesus the Jesus sometimes, but Danny is the Jesus here, dude. She is, they're praying to her,
for her, from her. I mean, they're looking for anything. Their city is torn up. Like,
the bigger picture is that someday it could be better. Yeah. But it's,
definitely going to have to get worse before better. And that's this chapter. Yeah. It's a difficult
transitionary period. Yeah. I mean, my friend Leslie once said or once learned that it takes like
10 years for a merger of cities. Yeah. No. Leslie, no. That's real. Yeah. No. Every time I think
about that, like literally the moment when that happened and the show is like that's real. That is Danny
right now. Danny, Leslie, nope. Merger, Eagleton merger. Like that's like what's like happening here of like
she got too much on her plate
to actually succeed with it
very ambitious with what she's
accomplishing and she doesn't even realize she's being
ambitious because she thinks
this is just survival.
Yeah. Well, you can all
keep up with us as we
survive. Yeah, as we survive
and watch Danny
struggling
with Pawnee.
Oh, my God.
