Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello and welcome to Girls Gone Canaan reads A Song of Ice and Fire, Episode 269, De Neri's 7 in a Dance with Dragons. I'm one of your hosts, Chloe. And I am another one of your host, Eliana, and it is episode 269. You remove that too, and I do believe a non-zero amount of 69 has happened this episode. And by that, I mean this chapter, not the episode, Jesus Christ. Nice. Nice to the second, to the 200. I can't do math.
Starting point is 00:00:49 It's too late for math. And it's too late for Danny, too. She's about to get married. She really doesn't want to, but she thinks it might fix things. Yeah. You should never just get married because you think it's going to fix things, is maybe a truth to grapple with. I'm just, like, worried of, like, this is the advice I need to tell people right now, but also, funny enough, yeah. No, I agree.
Starting point is 00:01:13 I thought a friend was about to start sending me wedding invites, and I was like, you weren't even dating someone when I saw you, like, a bit ago. I was like, am I going to have to, like, do an intervention? But turns out she was getting ready to send holiday cards. It was holiday cards, which is cute. That's fun. Are the holiday cards joint as the couple? I don't think so. I don't think she's dating anyone, and I was just worried.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Thank God that I wed myself off when I did, because I can't have you worrying about me my whole life, you know? And I was trouble. I used to be trouble. Well, that's why Danny's getting married off today, another, a child bride in our life to Neri. She's having her second marriage. her second marriage and maybe not her last you know they say three rings you must wear or whatever I didn't finish those books is this an ariana grante talk oh my god if you're a patron in our stranger tier and above hey you got an episode every month a bonus episode and this month
Starting point is 00:02:20 it is catching fire the enemy that's act three part one uh it's It is the next installment of our Hunger Games coverage. We will be pausing on Hunger Games next month because we'll be putting out our annual Gossip Girls Gone Canon Thanksgiving episode. Yes, annual. That means it's happening every year. You all asked for this repeatedly. We aren't going to reveal the proof of that, but you did ask for it.
Starting point is 00:02:50 We're telling you that. We felt it. We heard you in our hearts. Ask for it. I'm excited. Season two Thanksgiving. It's going to be good. We're in the juice of things.
Starting point is 00:03:00 We'll talk about everything from season one and two and maybe talk about the ending because if you are listening to this episode, you've probably watched All of Gossip Girl. Or you really like us and that's cool too. That's awesome. I hope we're entertaining. Are you watching Nobody Wants This, Chloe?
Starting point is 00:03:18 I am. It's warmed up after the first few season two episodes. The first couple episodes, I was like, oh, brother. but I'm back in now. I'm getting to mid-season. I'll hopefully have finished it by this weekend and we can discuss. Yeah, not nearly as good, but I just was like, hopefully this isn't too much of a spoiler, but Leighton Meester appears. I was like, huh, how fun. I've heard this. I've heard this. This was apt for us to discuss Gossip Girl. That's about it. Because everybody wants that. Everyone wants.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Late and Meester and more things. I actually legitimately do want Leighton Meester and more things. I do think everybody wants this. I think we talked about this a little bit. in our Thanksgiving episode maybe last year because we love Layton Meester but like she got really fucked because of the whole like pushing the music career during this and that it didn't go off and then yeah I feel for her like girl
Starting point is 00:04:06 Layton if you're out there not listening to us just know I'm thinking of you yeah if I think it's time for her to make her screen come back you know and I see why she tried to do the music career they all thought that's what you were supposed to do back then because some of them yeah that was the method yeah thought that was the method but turns out
Starting point is 00:04:25 it wasn't. Yeah. It didn't work for everyone. It was the formula. Behind you for it to work. And it came with a big price of, I mean, like, they all paid the price of their mental health anyway, but big price. Danny's mental health, also a big price in all this.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Yeah, she's also like a pop star, honestly. Yeah, she actually is. There's a whole other tangent I'm not going into because we're literally not through the intro yet. Yeah, that's true. Just no, there is one that I'm withholding. Uh, November 23rd. Discord brunch slash happy hour.
Starting point is 00:05:01 Probably. What do we call that? Brapy hour. What do we call that in our world? We, we. Again, everyone asked for us to come up with this name. Brapia hour. This is an ass.
Starting point is 00:05:10 I didn't even want this. For. Nobody wants this. The people, they sew banners in secret waiting for Brat Bia hour to be announced as the name. Yeah. Right now, it's looking. like November 23rd Sunday 2 to 4 p.m.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Most likely. E.T. Phone home. Yeah. Most likely. If anything changes, we will let you know through Oh my God. It will be. It really will be. Yeah. Isn't that crazy? Wow. I love when that happens. Love it. Phone home. E.T. Phone home. Yeah. We did get a good
Starting point is 00:05:48 comment on Patreon from our friend. We've actually gotten a lot of really good comments from people. Yeah. And I do want to pull them. I do want to pull them in. This one I just wanted to address from our friend, Tanna, who reminded all of us that, you know, many Targaryians did acquire the Great Spring Sickness in regards to whether or not Targaryens are plagued
Starting point is 00:06:08 by the same pestilences as common men. They did. I do want to flag. I thought about this in the moment. I was like, should I bring it up? And I decided not to. There's also the other Danaries who died of the shivers, which at the time of fire and blood releasing,
Starting point is 00:06:22 many were like, what does this mean? Like, is this foreshadowing for something, George? Like, I see you. But anyways, just didn't bring them up because I feel like I wanted to keep it De Neri's focus because she's like clearly built a little different than some of the other Targaryens. Like, clearly she's different from Viseries, right?
Starting point is 00:06:40 So I kind of wanted to focus it on her own experiences and her illnesses and like, obviously she gets fucking ill because whatever she experiences later in this book is something I too have experienced. Not like dysentery, just, you know, shitting my brains out. Oh my god. We can't we can't go down like the poop. Oh my god. Last episode was really proof heavy. No, we need to save this for Danny 10. I'm sorry. No, that's true. Like I'm, I, when I was listening back to editing it. We were saving this for Danny 10. No poop until Danny 10. We're so
Starting point is 00:07:10 sorry. We're so sorry. Yeah, it was like very heavily. So when I was editing it, I was like, what the fuck was that episode? I do also like, thank you, Tana for saying, saying these beautiful, wonderful things in a comment because I do love thinking about that outer rich history that we get little bits of that's so wonderful I actually was just putting
Starting point is 00:07:34 I was just putting our fire and blood signed copies from when we saw George last on the bookshelf yeah even though I have fire and blood twice you have like a lot of well yeah you have like four copies of fire and blood does anyone need a copy actually if
Starting point is 00:07:52 If you want a copy, let me know. I don't know if I have it twice for no reason. We might have, did we give one away? I don't remember. I think we did. Mine's not twice for no reason. Thank you very much. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:04 We did give one. I think you got rid of the one, the extra one. Yeah, because I had an extra one for some reason. Yeah, because we went to the last event and you had to get a signed book for the last event with him. That's why we have the extras. Because we went to both the first Fire and Blood event where we got our books then. And the second one, where we got our books then. Yeah, I forgot.
Starting point is 00:08:26 They were just giving them out like hotcakes, like hot pies. Yeah, just handing them out. But it's rough because the second ones aren't as not, like, aren't the same as, I like the first edition. I think it's very fun. Yeah, it's like a first edition Charzard. Yeah, and the second one is cool because it's different. It's black instead. So that's kind of fun.
Starting point is 00:08:44 And like, I can't wait to see what happens with blood and fire for that exact reason, because it'll be probably blackfiring. because he didn't know it was blood and fire when we got the first edition. You know what I mean? Yeah. Like, that was a new thing that happened later. We didn't know yet.
Starting point is 00:08:58 He didn't know. No, he literally didn't know. It came to him. Yeah. But my second one is signed and I don't think my first one signed. So I can't get rid of the second one. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:08 You see? Obviously. Yeah. It's rough. It's rough. Unless I take my first one and get that signed. I thought my first one... I thought our first ones were signed.
Starting point is 00:09:18 Are they? I don't think they are. No, I think they are. You better look. I don't know if I have it here. It might be at my mother's. Okay, I have to look for mine. I'll have to figure it out.
Starting point is 00:09:29 I'll have to figure it out. This is so fucked up. Anyways, 80th tangent. Again, we're still in the intro. Yeah. It's such a horrible thing happening to me and Eliana. All these signed copies of fire and blood. It's terrible.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Oh, my gosh. The house is just like burning down with fire and blood. Oh, my God. Uh, shout out to our friend Mary, who sent a wonderful, wonderful video of her 12-year-old lab, whose name is Turtle eating a pancake. That was incredible. I really loved that. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Um, nothing else to really write home about. I just really enjoyed watching that dog eat a pancake and that its name is Turtle. I love that. And we hadn't heard from Mary in a while, so it was nice to hear it from you, Mary. Thanks for writing in. Yeah. I remember that. This was awesome.
Starting point is 00:10:20 What a, I like, that's just a strong name also for a, for a dog. I know, turtle. Yeah, so good. You know what? Shout out our friend, Zach, our friend weed, detective Zach always sends me videos of his turtle eating stuff to speak of turtles, like a real turtle, not a dog named turtle. I love watching turtles eat things. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:40 That maw that opens very slowly. Oh, my God. It's a little beak. Oh. It's incredible. Okay, you guys. All right. Speaking of pets.
Starting point is 00:10:48 My partner has brought me some bourbon that is specifically a special Dodgers makers mark one because you guys, this is how much I care and how dedicated I am to the podcast, the World Series. It's on right now. Yeah, we're recording during the World Series. I do, I have to tell you, we're in a split household because I support you, therefore I support the Dodgers, right? Like support women. And my roommate supports the Blue Jays because he says. as fuck the Dodgers. Oh, I thought it was because of the New York connection, because they're close by.
Starting point is 00:11:24 No, no. The very territorial household right now, I'm only, I would also probably be saying go Blue Jays if I didn't love you. Thank you. Thanks. Because of feminism. Wow. It would be anti-woman of me to not like the Dodgers.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Oh, my God. So, all right. I always thought, and like, this is true. If you know the dynamic, we have not started the episode. If you know the dynamic, Chloe is Egan, Egan the Conquer. And her roommate is Rainey's and I'm Vesnia. Like, that's just how it is. But today, I feel a little like Rainey's in that you chose me.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Ten nights. Oh, my God. She chooses to spend it with me. Baseball season is hell. I don't know what I'm feeling also. Like, the fills are out, obviously, because they did what they do every year, which is they forgot how to. It's okay. And it's not you guys' fault that they're out.
Starting point is 00:12:18 They did what they do every year. They forgot how to hit a ball in October. That happens every year, like without fail. So I'm just, like, used to it, and I just have to get my hopes not up. But I will say, go motherfucking birds. Did you see that shit? Sorry, George. They killed the Giants.
Starting point is 00:12:35 Oh, oh. It was awesome. It was great. So, go birds. Actually, my parents are visiting, and when they visit, I bought some birds gear for them. They don't know yet. I can't wait. I remember, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:12:47 You told me you were going to do this, and I told, yeah, I told people, I was like, oh, what is this cute thing Chloe is doing? It's a cute prank, you know? There's time for, I don't, they're country mice. I don't want them getting hurt in the city. Yeah, Chloe also, they need to wear birds gear. But, like, I, you know, you get to just, like, make your own path as a person in the world, and I've decided that I'm an Eagles fan.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Yeah, you're a bird's fan. Yeah, yeah. So Chloe also bought me an Eagle sweater. E, A, G, L, E, S, Eagle Eliana No, but E, L-I-A-N-A
Starting point is 00:13:25 Eliana What happens in our lightning round every episode Well, we go through the chapters between the previous POV chapter and this one And so we're going to kick it off With the Prince of Winterfell
Starting point is 00:13:43 In which Arias Stark what's Ramsey Bolton Syke Not true I thought we were going for like a psych I mean you could have done it how you could have read it however your heart desired I thought that's so true
Starting point is 00:13:59 The Watcher Baylon Swan brings a piece of mind to Sunspear I was a real laugh on my part I was like I know thank you The next stage of the Dornish plan begins. We get to see some of it here.
Starting point is 00:14:18 Wow. This is a big plan. John 8. I don't know if he really did, but he certainly tried to. John 8. John sends vowed north to bring Tormond and his followers south.
Starting point is 00:14:34 His officers object to his policies regarding the free folk and give more whites cause to rise in the winter wind. Ooh. Tyrion 9. Tyrion and Penny joust on the pretty pig, and later they actually start to hold down a nice conversation
Starting point is 00:14:54 until a storm hits the ship, scattering them until they're picked up by a slaver ship. The turn cloak. In the Winterfell crypts, Barbary tells Rieke where her bloody loyalties lie. Ah, the king's prize. Asha is presented to Stannis, which goes pretty much how you imagine.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Over the course of the chapter, the king becomes more skeleton-like and supplies dwindle. It's a parallel to here, which is Deneres 7. Dorn arrives too late to save the queen from wedding his dar. And Dario can't save her either.
Starting point is 00:15:32 Don't save her. She don't want to be saved. Don't save her. She don't want to be saved. Don't save her. She don't want to be saved. Thank you for understanding. be safe. She don't want to be safe. Thank you. Um, a secret alliance pact is revealed to Denarius between
Starting point is 00:15:48 Dorn and the crown. This crown specifically. Danny marries his star. We open the chapter with The candle was almost gone. Less than an inch remained jutting from a pool of warm, melted wax to cast its light over the queen's bed. The flame had begun to gutter. It will go out before much longer, Danny realized. And when it does, another night will be at its end. Dawn always came too soon. She had not slept, could not sleep, would not sleep. She had not even dared to close her eyes for fear it would be morning when she opened them again. If only she had the power, she would have made their nights go on forever, but the best that she could do was stay away to try and savor every last sweet moment before daybreak turned them into no more than fading memories.
Starting point is 00:16:47 Well, um, bars. Bars, I kind of wondered when you started reading this aloud. I did not ever think about this reading through the chapter. Dario and Denei's likely engage in some wax play. That's it. I really love that that's what my voice made you think about. Thank you. You're welcome.
Starting point is 00:17:09 I mean, you inspire me. I wish I wouldn't. I wish I would expire you less. Other things. So in terms of what the chapter inspired in me, there's this, there's a lot of a discussion here regarding like wanting a night that is kind of like never ending because in it you can be who you are, like your passions as opposed to like in the day, etc. Where you kind of have to like perform, right?
Starting point is 00:17:37 You have to put on that lord's face at queen. face and what the dawn brings in terms of like real life. And I think it's really, there might be some sort of like thematic clue here going on in regards to what sleep affords when it comes to a dream and you living through that dream in the night, which is what's happening with Deniery's as she stays in this fantasy with Dario, this sort of like wishful fulfillment thing. And it makes me think about like what happens in the long night. Like you're going to see a lot more of people's like sort of like id.
Starting point is 00:18:09 come out, the ID, right, id part of their beings. But also, like, what happened here in terms of trying to bring back someone to life, right? Like, what's going on here when it comes to, like, the Knights Queen and Power? Something that, like, I know our friend, Matt, aka Joe Magician, have talked a lot about, is, like, this idea of the second sons and being spurned something, like, the ability to just go for what you want. So, especially things that are, forbidden. So I think that there's something going on here that's being drawn to us between what the long night symbolizes
Starting point is 00:18:45 in terms of that human heart and conflict with itself and emotions and what it means to come back to that like reality with the dawn. First of all, I can't believe you opened this chapter talking
Starting point is 00:19:01 about how the long night could be involved in this passage. Mark it off the bingo card. I did not. I opened it up with Wax play. Sorry, you opened it with Wax Play. Which could be part of... You really changed the game.
Starting point is 00:19:13 That's right. Of what's going on in the long night for all I know. I also was thinking like, when you were speaking, I was thinking night slash night, like a night, like a K'night as well, you know? Like, uh, the night ending. And obviously, Dario's not necessarily a night, but also like the man is ending for her, right? Like, she has to choose. And by the end of the chapter, I mean, first,
Starting point is 00:19:39 First of all, it's one of the most, like the saddest, you know, when you have like a main character who makes the choice, right? Like the thing they desire and want is right in front of them and they're choosing the hard thing that nobody wants to choose because they think it's right. And they're looking at love maybe and turning it away and turning it down to do their duty. Like duty, that is the whole fucking chapter. So yeah, like even though he's not a night, I was like, oh, night slash night, like the man is ending and the sun is setting.
Starting point is 00:20:09 and setting on like a whole section of your life you can't go back to. You know, you're locking the door. You're walking away in a lot of ways. She doesn't necessarily think so in this chapter, but it does happen by the end of the chapter. She realizes that's a whole, a hallway she'll never walk down, a door she'll never unlock and go into. I mean, looking at her plot, like the House of the Undying, right?
Starting point is 00:20:32 The doors, every door she could or could not go into. That's all life is. Regrets. sometimes it's not hopefully not always there are some things like for example Chloe is glad that she got married when she did not a regret
Starting point is 00:20:47 oh my god yeah I don't regret all the fucking dick I'd be slinging everywhere but um I mean that I'm looking in the camera when I say that I mean that what the fuck is going on why is your camera
Starting point is 00:21:04 you said no poop um is it I don't know. Oh, because my, I'm using my phone. Oh, okay. That makes sense. Because I was like, wow, this resolution's incredible. I was like, isn't it better than usual? It really feels like you're like TikTok streaming or like podcast streaming, you know, a lot of, a lot of people do that, you know? It feels like you're doing that.
Starting point is 00:21:22 I will say I've been watching my favorite podcaster recently a lot because I only really listen slash watch one podcast, which is so true with Caleb herein. Oh my God. Caleb Bestie have me on someday. but I've been watching a lot of that. So unfortunately, if it affects our podcast, it affects our podcast. It affects our podcast. Yeah. It's not the worst. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Sad. It's just like such a fucking sad. It is a sad chapter. And it like kind of, there's a lot of really interesting things going on here too around like, you see, I don't know, how a lot of people like, they are chained by the system. And in so many ways, even though she should have like more of that power. But. Powerless.
Starting point is 00:22:07 Even the night before, you know, she fixes the entire problem and there's never any murder and Marine ever again. Ha ha. It's just killing people's futures and dreams. Whatever. Dario sleeps peacefully beside Danny. And he had once told her he never had nightmares. And she thinks he has a cell sword's conscience, no conscience at all.
Starting point is 00:22:31 So she's laying there thinking, Dario doesn't have any thoughts. Yeah. She's like, no, no thoughts head empty, must be nice. Honestly, I don't... Yeah, he's just sitting there sleeping of murder, murder sleep. I don't, yeah, I don't know if it's true or not that he never has nightmares, but honestly, you know, must be nice. Oh my God, yeah. Well, I don't even know, I don't have that many nightmares.
Starting point is 00:22:53 I have, like, stress dreams that I think other people would consider nightmares, but are normal dreams from him. I'm like, oh, that was stressful. Anyways, I think it's important that there's this idea that's put, forth here that cell swords have no conscience because of how these chapters act in dialogue with like the John Connington chapters because I think we can see very clearly, right? John Connington, a cell sword, he's got a conscience, right? Or even like Quentin, arguably a cell sword because that's his current like temp job. That's literally his plot. Yeah. And both of these people definitely have consciences. It's just like they're defined by.
Starting point is 00:23:34 different things, especially for John Connington in terms of living up to the ghost that he carries, and I came up with this little line for all of you. I didn't really come up with it. George Morf came up with most of it. High in the halls of the Kings who are gone, Johnny would dance with his ghost. That's what I have
Starting point is 00:23:50 for all of you about John Connington. I came up with this line. You disgust me. You literally disgust me. You are literally the most annoying person I know, but I love you. Okay, yeah. No, for sure, though. Good quote pull from music, thematically resonant music.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Oh, yeah. I thought you were going to say about the actual real thought regarding, like, John Connington, because, like, we see how much he's, like, trying to do right by Ragar's ghost and, like, even changes whatever, like, the Golden Company is doing in order to adhere to, like, some of those, like, deeper than blood contracts or whatever, or deeper than gold. It's blood. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Yeah, I mean, yes. I knew what you meant. And that, as well as Doran, right? Like as Quintin's arriving, some people are currently reading a Feast for Crows, which feels really wrong. That's the girly book, you know, the girly pop book. That's for the girlies. And we'll never go back there again.
Starting point is 00:24:46 It's so terrible. Every day, it's like, oh, and we're doing this chapter. And I'm like, shut your mouth. Like, that's my book. I feel really, like, mad. I'm like, you can do this if you want. Like, let me come back and do that instead. But it's perfectly placed that you have all of the stuff going on in feast.
Starting point is 00:25:04 Watcher obviously brings it up as well, but everyone is doing things for ghosts, right? Elia's ghost. Elia's ghost is haunting everything. Egan is haunting everything. The ghost of Baby Relagan. Dashed against the ground, you know, head all caved in, rip. But rip. No, truly.
Starting point is 00:25:24 Rip. I've got jokes this chapter. Sorry, everyone. Denarius thinks of Dario's skin. She, like, likens it to silk and satin. And I'm like, hmm, those Targaryens and their love for Satin, am I right? And this is a joke now about a different John, not John Connington, John Snow. You disgust me.
Starting point is 00:25:44 I'm just kidding. John Satin's fine. Cute. I don't know. I do think there's some John seriously in this that we'll talk about. Oh, always. Yeah. Adorable.
Starting point is 00:25:56 John and Satin could just go off into the sunset. We're snowstorm people now, I guess. Yeah, we're snowstormers. I don't know that I'm like, I'm like okay with it. I like see all the signs. It lines up. I mean, yeah, well, more in a minute. But Danny looks at Dario's sexy bod and thinks that she would give up her crown if he asked,
Starting point is 00:26:17 but she knows that he never would. She savors everything about him and thinks, remember, remember how he felt. She kisses his shoulder and he awakens like a cat, asking if it's dawn, it's not. They still have time. She doesn't want this night to end Because then only two nights remain And she must marry And she can't marry Dario
Starting point is 00:26:38 But he asks her all the same And still she must deny him I'm a little confused here As a person who has cats Chloe So she says that Dario awakens all at once Like a cat And I've seen a cat awaken And I don't know that they're like always
Starting point is 00:26:52 All at once They like do a fun stretch And then they like They can be leisurely They can make up all at once But not always I guess sometimes alert Maybe George was trying
Starting point is 00:27:02 Because, like, sometimes if I fuck with Jake, he'll be like, what the fuck? And he'll open his eyes wide, like, what are you doing? But to your point, I imagine him kind of lazily waking because he said, like, a cat. Like, I imagine him doing the arm stretch and the fur shake and the, I don't know. I don't know. We'll let it slide for now. But I think it's, everyone's allowed to have their own perception of Dario. You know, some people have an incorrect one.
Starting point is 00:27:25 Whoa. Whoa. Meow. The claws are out. We have a quote. Caldrago had been her son and stars, but he had been dead so long that Denaries had almost forgotten how it felt to love and be loved. Dario had helped her to remember, I was dead, and he brought me back to life. Oh my God, it's just like Evanescence.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Oh my God, I was actually, I was going to liken it to like, wow, she really discovered, like, her first favorite musicians, her first favorite poets. It's, like, it's hitting deep. I also really appreciate that when I first went through this and was outlining the chapter for us, the only thing I could come up with was, damn, sad as fuck. Like, all I wrote was just, like, ultimately, this is sad as fuck. It's interesting that the commentary throughout here, Danny's become an old, tired woman overnight, right?
Starting point is 00:28:18 This is what the weight of the crown does. The refrain of, remember, remember how he felt is very sad as we've talked about you know that's my my fantasy romantic like book kink is definitely like love
Starting point is 00:28:34 lost love you know oh okay I wasn't sure like he got me I was like had her every single way a man can or like what are we what are we talking about
Starting point is 00:28:44 well it's also to be fair like it's why I like George sex scenes honestly because they are I actually don't dislike them no I think they're real they feel real
Starting point is 00:28:56 they aren't look I've read Fourth Wing, okay? Like, the sex scenes in Fourth Wing, a lot of girlies are like, I love Fourth Wing, and that's why I read them because it's so sexy and hot, and that's fine if that's what you like. But for me, when I read that,
Starting point is 00:29:11 it's eye roll-worthy. I flip the pages and make sure that I don't miss anything about the magic going on. I'm like, all right, what's happening the next day at school? Like, I just skip the sexy sex with the dresser and the lightning and the whatever's going on. Some of it gets very repetitive, but George, every sex scene is different and is from the POV that it's written from and feels real and feels like a real experience. And these all these bittersweet lines she has about trying to remember him and like keep him, right?
Starting point is 00:29:44 Keep this one thing, this one memory just for her. It's so sad, beautiful, bittersweet. She finally has love for the first time it's on her terms. Every single time you mentioned Danny's name before, now it's Danny and Vassaris, Danny and Drogo, Danny and da-da-da. But now it's Danny, and she loves Dario, and that's fine. But they could be separate. They could be separate names. In a way, the power imbalance is also, this is the first time she's ever had more power in a relationship.
Starting point is 00:30:17 So that's kind of interesting. While, yes, he can go out and be Marshall and slice bitches up with his blade because he's mad. she still is the one that would chastise him at the end of the day for that and be able to. She does have control over his body. So interesting, interesting, and it's the first time she's ever felt that. And she has found love on her terms, but she also knows she can't keep it. The beginning of the chapter is telling her that, even though the middle section of this chapter, the second act of this chapter, is her trying to have her cake and eat it too. and I do love for her. Dario is like the concept of,
Starting point is 00:30:59 and I'm not saying that you have to have somebody who teaches you how to love or that you learn how to love through, but I think everyone does have first loves that maybe in retrospect, a billion years down the line, you're like, of course I didn't like marry this guy from when I was 16 or 15, like Danny here.
Starting point is 00:31:19 But you learned how to rest, respect yourself. You learned what you want in a lot of ways and what you don't want in a relationship in a lot of ways from that love. And though it felt like the world was maybe falling apart, it made you the person you are now. So I think there's a lot of that here. And that's what makes me see a lot of what could come for her and John. Spoiler, it's them, in the future, right? like proto john stuff happening here like these are situations that maybe she's not engaging with or making the right quote unquote choice but like what's the right choice in life no one fucking knows it's a shit show life you know like all of it it's a shit show there is no right
Starting point is 00:32:03 choice but maybe she's not making what seems like the right choices but she is learning about herself and what she wants and maybe what she will want someday with john yeah i think so first of all, it helps me to, like, remember that Denarius should basically be 18 years old in this, like, and it makes more sense to me, like, not even, like, on, like, the weird sexual stuff, like, just in terms of life stage, right? And some of those, and, like, I agree with everything that you've said, like... Thanks. Actually, like, I think it...
Starting point is 00:32:33 I want to say it's our friend, like, Rowan, who taught me this or, like, articulated it well when we spoke of just because a relationship doesn't last, forever doesn't mean it was a failure, right? It doesn't mean it wasn't successful. And like, this one's not like, that's something I didn't know until like the last seven years, you know? Like, I really didn't understand that till I got a little older. And now I'm like, oh, those weren't failures. They weren't wastes of time. Yeah. I think it's like hard because like obviously like Dario isn't a waste of time here, right? Like she's so lonely. It's, it's awesome to have someone like there who also it seems like he actually cares for her in some ways, but also like, sometimes like the
Starting point is 00:33:19 timing's not there, right? You know? And it's fine to enjoy a person for the time that you have them and you cherish it for what it is. Exactly. Yeah. That's so, so sad. Remember. Remember. Yeah. Bittersweet. I think it's also just sad because like, you know, her life is probably going to be brief and that's also sad in a different way when it comes to the loves that she has but also you know there's something going on here where like she's worried
Starting point is 00:33:50 that Dario doesn't love her for her and like maybe maybe not right like but I and she's worried that he loves her only for what she represents and it makes me think of like Sanzo thinking that no one will ever love her they will only ever love her claim and like I think
Starting point is 00:34:05 I can see why she feels this way right because Droggo only wanted her initially, because she was the last Targaryen. That's why he wanted her, as you said, he was like collecting memorabilia. Dario, I mean, maybe he only wanted her because she's a queen. I'm not super sure.
Starting point is 00:34:24 And then Zaro obviously only wanted her for her dragons because they play for the same team. His Dar only wants her also because she's a queen. And Jora only wanted her because he has a thing for blondes. That's true.
Starting point is 00:34:39 That's true. I don't know. Maybe he, like, cared about her, but I don't know. If he did, then he would, like, put her needs first, whatever. Yeah. Yeah. It is devastating. Like, I mean, that is the sadder part of this is that in the midsection here,
Starting point is 00:34:53 we're about to see it, like, reasserted, like, oh, yeah. That is why Dario's into her, though. I mean. Her power. Who she is. He likes her, but also there's a desire that comes with it. I'm about to get, like, on a little soapbox here, not regarding my life, but, like, my other friends.
Starting point is 00:35:09 lives and good yeah talk about them it's like it's it's it's hard out there for women okay it's hard that's what i hear we love that like dario likes her because she's powerful you know because yeah no yeah i'm not against it there are men who will like drag you down with them or like who will get super weird about like if a woman is like more successful in the relationship like in terms of profession or like finances or whatever and they will destroy you on the inside for that. And like, we see that with Kristen Cole, actually, honestly. Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:35:47 He definitely, it's very different with him than this relationship. Yeah, in hot D. Yeah. So, like, I think, you know, you can see what that's like and they'll be, like, insecure and they'll put that all on you and, like, you know, make that really heavy for you. And so it is refreshing to see that Dario isn't daunted by that. Yeah. He likes a hot bitch in power.
Starting point is 00:36:08 Yeah. Good for him. gotta embrace it while you got it I also back to like that there are just fucking like planes everywhere today like they're just soaring so much
Starting point is 00:36:21 that I don't know where they stop and I end so crazy that's what Denneres wondered as well when she was having sex with Dario are you having sex with the plane that's a whole genre that actually is a whole genre of porn you guys
Starting point is 00:36:33 my cunt is becoming the world yes episode 269 That said, nice. I do want to call out, too, that that kind of like, remember, remember. There's something sad about, like, the bittersweet about this entire chapter and about her having to give up. That reminds me of the godfather. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:36:55 Don't spoil the whole thing. Don't spoil the whole thing. You fucking bitch, just watch the movie. We watched it. We were going to watch it, but I was jettlagged that day. I even made us homemade spaghetti. We're going to watch it. It's going to happen. Don is talking to Michael about, you know, he's talking about how... Just say whatever you want. Just say whatever you want. I will forget it. I will make myself forget. So Don Corleone is the dad, right? And he's basically the big boss. Okay, good, good. I just want to make sure that you are at least somewhat contextually in. Michael, you know, son is talking to him. And Michael, gotten on the bad side of things he's kind of you know he's a bad egg he's doing some bad
Starting point is 00:37:44 egg things he's making hard choices not on like no bad egg on he's making he is though he's making like some hard choices he's kind of the chosen one and don has this conversation and he's talking about you know like you were the chosen one michael and he says but i never wanted this for you i work my whole life i don't apologize to take care of my family i refuse to be a fool dancing on the strings held by all of those big shots. That's my life. I don't apologize for that. But I always thought that when it was your time, you would be the one to hold the strings. Senator Corleone, Governor Corleone, something. And it's just like this very bittersweet, like, there's never enough time. That's what Dan he's experiencing. She thought she would have
Starting point is 00:38:29 more time. And there's never enough time. You don't have, you don't know how much time you have to love someone. That's true. That's why I love you every day. I love you, too. Oh, so this is something, I should, I probably should save this for just us, but we can do it here in front of everyone, God and everyone about our friendship. I was like, what makes Chloe my friendship work? It's that we never stop trying to make each other laugh, I think. No, it's true, right? It's up there.
Starting point is 00:38:58 No, we like one up each other. Yeah. Like, I'm like, no way, I'm going to make her laugh. No, I'm going to make her laugh. It's great. It's always great. I think it's very doofy. Yeah, maybe.
Starting point is 00:39:07 It makes our episodes. very long. The best relationships are built on that. Like in a way, you're always trying to make the other person smile. Yeah. And like, for me, I'm always on tragically. Like, if I bomb in convo with you, like, I know that I have like 20 more chances to get it 100%. Well, yeah, duh, because like that's the whole point. That's my, that's my philosophy to being funny. I'm like, even if you just have to keep making, you got to keep making opportunities and like people will like think by volume of it, but you're very funny. We're jester-coded, dude.
Starting point is 00:39:41 We're so jester-coded. That's why I'm just like, everyone you need to remember, Chloe and I are just entertainers. We're like literally not scholars on this. I mean, but we could be. Just hopping from foot to foot. Yeah, you can cite us. People do, but also.
Starting point is 00:39:55 But, you know, we're little jesters. We're here for you. Yeah. Not biased. They're quiet. You sent me a mime thing. Yes, I did. That was funny as hell that video.
Starting point is 00:40:05 So lately, Dario has been a little too bold. He's been kissing Danny publicly, like, in front of other counselors. It made Bairston really mad. And Danny reminds Dario, once she's wed, it is high treason for him to desire her. And he's like, bet, pop a boner. He says, then, he must be a traitor. And he grins and he smells his fingers, which smell like her. I don't know if we're supposed to, like, not like that.
Starting point is 00:40:32 I like that scene. I like that. That's hot. But a lot of people, I guess, are committing high treason. But I do think her joking with him that it's high treason to desire the queen, right? Which it's not, but it is really interesting in the context of what Circe is doing across the sea and how she's like how she's making all of her plans happen. Yeah, he's very much like as he's a cell sword, you can see a lot of the similarities with the kettleblacks, right?
Starting point is 00:41:04 and Circe a lot of the dialogue feels lifted from kettle black in a way like because you called that out you can also see like how it's lifted but at the same time you can contrast it with the way that the kettle blacks treat Searcy and wanting to fuck the queen right as opposed to like what we see Dario say to her which is quite different in vibe yeah absolutely he's not exploiting her and blackmailing her for power she actually already gave him a little he he got the power himself and then she said, all right, I'll hire you. There's a little bit of fairness going on. Just a little. Just a little.
Starting point is 00:41:40 And he chafes that when there isn't. Yeah. He takes his leave to get drunk or go fight in the city, joking, well, maybe I should go kill his Dar. And Danny throws a pillow at him for that. She is currently letting his Dar hold court as king. She needed a break. She's like, well, they're his people.
Starting point is 00:41:59 And Dario reminds her, some of them are your people, the ones you freed. Remember? They want their mother. He says, will you hold court? And she's like, no, not till after the wedding, after the peace is there. And Dario's like, you really should hold court. The new Westerosi men want to see you from the wind blown. They tell tales of Targaryans. And there's a dornish boy, Frog, who has a gift for her. Hmm. So, yeah, Frog was like, oh, I have a gift for the queen in jars. I guess I can convey this. And he's like, no, I have to give it directly. And then, like, De Neri's jokes of like, give the gift to me. This is dumb. It makes me think of Tyrion, me like, I'm the gift. But also it makes me think of some of the other language around gifts in the story. Give her the gift.
Starting point is 00:42:45 That's no good. Don't do that. Yeah, I'm like... Not that gift. Not, but in the context of Aria's story, seems bad. Yeah, seems bad, exactly. The gift in the north, maybe. That's fine.
Starting point is 00:42:57 Oh, yeah. That's a happier. Yeah. That could be like a, you know, better-ish. But no, not really. because that's going to be consumed with whites soon enough. Danny does think it would be very nice to hear the common tongue from Westeros, from someone other than Barristan, so finally she gives in.
Starting point is 00:43:14 And she leaves, Dario leaves. No, she stays. This is her fucking room. What am I saying? Dario leaves. Missande comes in with bread, milk, and figs, and she's like, are you unwell? I thought I heard you scream.
Starting point is 00:43:28 269. Danny takes a fig and wonders if his Darb will ever make her scream. She tells Miss Ande it was the wind And she wanders out to the terrace Honestly, if his door is willing to And you're all willing to have an open communication Like maybe A lot of it is just communication
Starting point is 00:43:44 Just ask for what you want Yeah You know what movie I like you guys It's on Hulu Summer of 69 It was cute I got my first real six string You should
Starting point is 00:43:56 I think I told you to watch it You should watch it It's cute So in regards to the screen Obviously, some Liza Aaron parallels here with little finger. No, that's a joke. That's a joke. I mean, kind of, you know, okay.
Starting point is 00:44:10 It's sweet that Nasande checked in on her. It does make me think a little bit about how Brand was like, I don't really know what's going on here when he, like, spots the toys. And, like, kids being like, whoa, you scream. Like, what's up? Are you good? And she's like, I'm good. That and the people at the feast fucking, too.
Starting point is 00:44:28 He's like, what the fuck? Yeah. What is that? the harvest fast or whatever. Aw. Aw. What a boy. There is a line,
Starting point is 00:44:39 internal dialogue from Danny. Her foes were all about her. Okay, Sarsi. Yeah. What book is this now? I was like a Feast for Crows or the first two Sersy chapters. Dude. And dance.
Starting point is 00:44:52 Prophecy, not even once. You know, not even once. Not even once. Don't even do it. Don't even do it. There is a lot of cautionary tale stuff going on with Sersi. and Danny, and there is something great about that contrast, right? That, like, it's a little different.
Starting point is 00:45:08 It's not quite the same. You can see Danny working at real policies instead of using thin tactics. But also, you see her stuff is a little flimsy in other ways, too, where Circe has a little bit of smarts about stuff in some aspects. Like, hey, some of Cersie's plans, a little bat shit, but some of them worked for a bit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:32 You know? Yeah, for a bit, yeah. Same with Danny. Same with Danny. Yeah. Same with Danny. Agreed. You're talking about how what a boy, you know, brand being young. Isaac Hempstead, as many of us have been reminded.
Starting point is 00:45:45 Married. Yeah, married, 26 years old. 26. Yeah. That's. Had to get off the market because didn't need him out there slinging it, you know? Oh my God. Just like you.
Starting point is 00:45:57 He's just like us. And by that, I mean, like, old. We're old. I was like, what the fuck? You're definitely not wrong. One of the moths was like, all like at the seniors meet up, like, we're going to do that or something like that in a few years. See me gumming some mashed potatoes. Right.
Starting point is 00:46:17 So. Jesus. There were always at least a dozen ships, sometimes as many as 100, out in the bay. And behind them, they built scorpions, catapults, trebyshees. Hammers would ring through the air on still nights, but. But no siege towers, no battering rams. They would wait flinging stones at her until famine and disease ruined them. And she was like, His Dar would bring her peace.
Starting point is 00:46:41 He must. Girl, don't want to rely on that. That night, De Neri's can't eat and sleep comes hard. Dario returns so drunk, he can barely stand. And she dreams that His Dar kisses her, but his lips were blue, bruised, and his manhood, cold as ice. Listen, his czar's just in his 2016 makeup era. and like denarius winks disheveled and although dario is there alone and like i can't tell like so around this time in this chapter the cooks give her a meal and it's like roasted kid as in like baby goat but i don't know if this is like a wink wink from george i'm not saying she's eating children right like that's silly oh it feels like it but like it's a reminder of what's weighing on her conscience in terms of like the children and drug gone being out there being like
Starting point is 00:47:32 I love eating kids yeah no absolutely I mean come on George loves little nods he loves a little wink George loves a little wink I think you did it or big wink
Starting point is 00:47:47 I didn't even think about it so that's pretty good good job I'm pretty impressed I'm impressed with you you're pretty good at this never stop never stop trying in your relationship everyone. We're living proof.
Starting point is 00:48:04 269 episodes later. Of course, there's the Uron part of this dream. It does make me wonder if like there's a little interception going on with a glass candle like in there messing with the bunny rabbit ears
Starting point is 00:48:20 on the TV. I don't know. I don't know. Maybe he's up in that bitch casting himself into the dream. I mean, if anyone's... I also would think it's interesting if it like uses this like okay because I'm having a lot of dreams lately because I would never do drugs but if you do a certain drug your brain gets used to not having dreams and I'm having dreams because I haven't been doing as usual I'm not doing drugs or drinking and I'm having
Starting point is 00:48:49 dreams every night and they're insane but they're all based on things that I'm very clearly able to divine from like I'm like oh that's stressful because of work or oh this exact thing was in my dream because yesterday someone at work said X thing or you know there's all these things happening like that where I wonder if the glass candle can only manipulate and not totally create right like it has to have a base matter to manipulate maybe you can like do more but you have to be like really skilled at it right and Uron's just like kind of like mildly yeah he's just just dabling just a thought if anyone's like really winking it's Uron you know because he's got that eye that's covered.
Starting point is 00:49:32 No, I'm not falling for that. I'm not falling for that shit. Anyways, I don't like you right now. That wasn't funny. You got to get back in the game. I take my affirmation words back. See, this is the other part. You got to keep it spicy, give and take.
Starting point is 00:49:49 You got to take it away. You got to be honest with your partner. You know, if she didn't make you laugh come, then she didn't make you laugh come. Don't lie to words. Jesus. Yeah, communication. Danny thinks she wanted to shake him, wake him, make him hold her, fuck her, help her forget.
Starting point is 00:50:08 But she knew that if she did, he would only smile and yawn and say, it was just a dream, my queen, go back to sleep. Actually, sorry, what he would say is, it was just a dream, my queen, go back to sleep. My wife. That's why he's trying to get her to run away with him. My wife. So, this is like not helpful to anyone. I read that line and I was like, it's going to be, she wanted to shake him, wake him, bake him. Unhelpful.
Starting point is 00:50:40 Instead, Denarius. A smile came to my face. I'm glad. A smile. The Neri slips into a robe and stands on her terrace gazing down on the city. And she goes, it will never be my city. It will never be my home. Like, not with that attitude.
Starting point is 00:50:52 Don comes and her handmaids find her asleep on the grass outside. Interesting. feel the rain on your skin. She orders them to bring her crown in court clothes, and an hour later she descends, announced by Monsande. Resnach flatters her beauty, blaming it on her approaching wedding,
Starting point is 00:51:12 and Danny Sise, summoning the first petitioner. And, like, y'all, we know why. We know why she's actually glowing. Resnock noticed that post-orgasm glow. No, he did. Yeah. No, I think you're right. There's a lot of thinly veiled things here.
Starting point is 00:51:29 that and like Galaza Galar who steps forward and she's veiled in green and she's like I would like a private audience with you and Daneris is like no I'm busy I get married tomorrow after that whatever and she's like no it concerns your cell sword captain and Danny is shocked and she's like how dare she say this about Brown Ben Plum in public and she's like the warning is too late and she sends her back to her temple. I think Danny thinks this is about
Starting point is 00:52:04 Brown Ben Plum, but clearly I think this is about her cell sword captain who has been making out with her publicly, her, who's engaged to his Dar. And especially with what we have at this point of the story of like miscommunications,
Starting point is 00:52:21 like looking parallel to John, who's making some of these similar mistakes with people's intentions, right? Like the Carr Starks and Melisandra and all of his fellow captains who he's like, well, whatever, they have to put up with it because I'm the commander and no one's going to harbor any anger about my choices that will get me killed. Obviously, no one's going to do that. Like, clearly Galaza wanted to talk about Dario and probably scold her for her acting inappropriate, not very discreet about her little affair. but also what's worse is that she presumes that Galaza doesn't really see or know because she thinks it's about Ben immediately and I don't know if she if Galaza presumes that Danny who answered and is like I know what you want to talk about and we're not going to
Starting point is 00:53:12 talk about it sister but like Galazza's like well I wanted to talk about Dario and Danny's like she wanted to talk about Brown Ben Plum those are two very distinctly different situations that in the current political climate will not benefit Danny, right? Like, this is not good if she has this miscommunication with her. It's kind of a major insult that maybe in Galazza's eyes
Starting point is 00:53:40 what Danny just said to her was, fuck you, I'm going to fuck my cell sword what I want with my giant fucking dick. So fuck you. Like, that's kind of a huge insult. So that's not going to help the tensions. And it's also really fun because Danny is currently obsessing about the prophecy all the time in the background and how things are one-one, right?
Starting point is 00:54:00 Like the sun's sun, it's lining up, the prophecies here. But there are so many loud things in the Miranese politics that are like in front of her slash happening around her and she's not hearing them. Yeah, I think that's the thing, right? She is kind of like insulting them a little. Like I do think she knows it's about Dario and she redirects it to be about Ben because, of few paragraphs ago it is about Dario and she's like appalled that it was brought up here in front of everyone and she sees it as like private she's like let me have just like this little bit of fucking happiness and like redirect it especially because she explicitly calls it out as brown
Starting point is 00:54:38 benplum as opposed to like kind of hiding it she's trying to make the narrative be about that as opposed to Dario like I do think she knows and just trying to like hide it because also and like Golaza plays along with it to an extent because In front of everyone, she doesn't want to call into question. Like, she doesn't want to make it public that this is happening because then it also would weaken his Dar's own position in front of everyone for the queen to be having dalliances with everyone else. And then, like, you know, Galaza basically, like, ends it with, like,
Starting point is 00:55:10 I will pray for you, which is, you know, essentially, that was a bless your heart. That was a bless your heart, which now that I think about it is even more apt if we're likening this as well to Reconstruction-era stuff. I guess. I guess. Maybe I'm influenced. I don't know, but I just think it's more fun if she didn't. I think you're right, though.
Starting point is 00:55:33 Like, it is, like, insulting, though, for her to be like, shut the fuck up. I'm going to fuck whoever I want. No, yeah, this is totally insulting. No matter what she's saying here, it's not good. I feel like I could teach. I mean, like, I don't know. I guess it would be different if you had eyes on you all the time, right? And, like, everyone's watching you.
Starting point is 00:55:47 But, like, I feel like I could teach her about, here's how you hide, something like, here's how no one knows about your booty call. That's fair. But, that's fair. Maybe, I mean, it's different than your queen and you don't have cell phones. But, I mean, she is being so blasé about it. Like, they kiss in front of Barriston in this very chapter. Like, it is a little blasé. And I think that's also part of what makes it so sexy to her.
Starting point is 00:56:15 But, like, needy. to put it away like keep it secret keep it safe all right I don't want to say this because like I'm not I don't think the Neres is mad and I really I really don't but like when you said it like that about the how she's being Blase it it makes me think of like what Barriston is saying regarding how scandalous it was when Aries was being so open about Joanna you didn't break that up right no but she's well somewhat I mean I'm gonna talk about the parallels in a bit, but, you know, she's acting a little bit more like her father
Starting point is 00:56:52 than her mother. Oh, she already acted like her mother, I guess, for some of that time in a Game of Thrones, which was really sad. And she's sick of it, yeah. Well, and I mean, she is keeping it, like, it is sad, right? Like, in the beginning, she is giving it away as we just, like, we're talking about very sadly 20 minutes ago before we were yelling at Danny. Me, Danny, how could you put your affair in public like this?
Starting point is 00:57:15 but it isn't like it's the world's worst kept secret but you know her mother and Bonifer Hastie which we'll talk about had to you know keep it quiet and then get rid of it because they couldn't keep it so it's like she's battling well there you go she's battling between the dichotomy of both of them right like how to be a ruler how to be the king and how to be the queen
Starting point is 00:57:40 yeah and we'll get to that we'll get to that we got ahead of ourselves Doing something that's never been done, right? Like, she's like, how do I? Oh, I was like, wax-play? Wear this strap every day. This Valerian strap every day. How do I wear it?
Starting point is 00:57:54 Honestly. The Valerian strap that belonged to my great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, reeth. I legitimately think Dario would say yes. Oh, yeah. He would love a finger up, but anyways. Or more. We don't have time for this. Yeah, we don't have time for this.
Starting point is 00:58:08 So the rest of the day drags. Danny sits on her cushions. She's impatient, eating figs, ham and the endless line of petitioners continues, but near sunset Dario enters with the new storm prose. A ragged mix of men, the oldest was 60, the youngest was Danny's age, somewhere plundered finery, others rags. One, pretty Maris, is a tall, scarred woman with no ears and cold eyes. Hugh Hungerford is lean and dark. Weber is short and tattooed with spiders. Orson Stone and Lucifer Long are knights and will of the woods leers.
Starting point is 00:58:44 mumbles through a half-bitten tongue. We've probably talked about this back then. We're not going to dig into it. I'm just going to say, go check out Joe Magician's stuff on Pretty Maris and what might have inspired George to write Pretty Maris and some of those other storylines thrown out by the five-year gap. Absolutely. And I do appreciate, you know, the idea of some sell swords, potentially having been
Starting point is 00:59:10 knights or having been from Westeros and, uh, Weber, who's short and tattooed with spiders. It makes me think maybe he's a House Weber, you know, outer character. But also interesting to wonder, like, what the allegiance is there, right? Like, House Weber, especially with, like, the Duncan Egg stories being so black fire-centric. And fun. They also have that, like, black, white and red sigil, which is kind of fun. But her, like, I think of Rowan Weber and marrying Eustis.
Starting point is 00:59:44 and fighting for the wrong side and also how she lost, like, husbands to the battle and dot, da-da-da. So really interesting, even though Weber was a dragon supporter and not a Blackfire supporter. So, I don't know, just fun because now we're getting the introduction also with the Blackfires, right? And Doran's going to support them because they think he's the real Egan. And Arienne's going to marry Agan because she doesn't want to lose, even though her brother's actually dead and not marrying Danny.
Starting point is 01:00:17 Yeah. And we're going to have amazing scenes between John Connington and Arianne hating each other. It's going to be so good, so good, for no reason, too. For no reason. The Dornishmen, they're different, right? Dario introduces Green Guts, Gerald, and Frog. Green Guts resembles Bellas. Gerald is handsome and sun streaked
Starting point is 01:00:44 And frog is plain and solemn With stubble like a boy's first beard She wonders at his name It's like maybe, I don't know Frog prints or something She thinks kiss him and he explodes Kaboom Wow
Starting point is 01:01:00 Wow Wow Kind of Oh my god I'm thinking about Chloe and I were talking about Shrek again earlier You know about the bird when Fiona sinks too high
Starting point is 01:01:12 just explodes Oh gosh During this introduction Right of everything And when she eventually finds out It's Quentin Deneri says Oh well
Starting point is 01:01:25 Sun spear stayed loyal to my father But as we know I mean like Yeah But also partially Because Aries kept Elyan the Chilitrin hostage Yeah that dichotomy
Starting point is 01:01:40 once more, right? Am I my father? Yeah, and I don't think Quentin knows that. No. But also, there's something great here again, once more, adding to that tension, the presumption that she does often. And in an attempt to be queenly also, like, yes, but. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:03 And what that adds to later. Yeah. Yep. Yep. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Danny, however, does welcome them, again, saying Sunspear's loyalty is remembered and apologizes for their losses. She learns that Green Guts is called that because he gets seasick, and all three are knights, which Dario's pretty irritated about. He's like, oh, I can't believe you lied to me.
Starting point is 01:02:28 You got in my group and lied to me in my boy band. And Barristan also is kind of wary both of them and their lies, but also of the rising tension between everyone. When challenged about their knighthood, Gerald is like, I would defend my claim, but not against Barriston the Bold. And he adds, we traveled under false names and we'd like to reveal ourselves privately to the queen, which is fun since somebody else who traveled under a false name is Barristan. And they just call him out right away, which I think is very smart on their part. Yeah. They mean business, right? It means something to Danny, too.
Starting point is 01:03:07 like, Jora knew and didn't say anything and tried to use it for his advantage for several months, even though he knew. And they're honest. These guys were honest to her right away. They were ready to prove themselves right away. That's, uh, that's refreshing for her considering the vipers she's around right now. Not that viper. Yeah, not that viper.
Starting point is 01:03:28 That viper would have been like, he would already be here. He would have won. We would have fixed it. He would have been dick deep. Yeah. Oh. Dario would have been real big. kind of interesting.
Starting point is 01:03:37 Oh, if O'Brien had shown up. Yeah. Oh, they would have, like, killed each other from a trial by combat within a day. Yeah. Within a day. I do like, it is, it was a pretty smooth line.
Starting point is 01:03:50 I'd be like, I can try to fight Bears in the Bold, and like, honestly, yeah, you shouldn't. You shouldn't. Denaries does clear the court, per their suggestion, and Sir Jerris drink water, and Sir Archibald Ironwood present themselves. Before they speak,
Starting point is 01:04:05 Frog offers a gift, a scrap of writing and Dario grabs it but Bereson orders it given to Danny and you were talking about like this tension that's rising right and I think yeah part of it is because like oh well I guess these guys shut up in secret that's kind of weird and Beresid actually I think recognizes some of these names right he's like oh iron one big name right I mean drink water maybe but like in my opinion eh not that big but like Dario of course obviously hates being deceived here you know he has never deceived anyone in his life he's never beheaded his superiors or whatever in his life and I think that there's like a fear among the
Starting point is 01:04:41 people here part of the tension is like all right so he's upset at these guys he's gotten the scrap of paper please don't please don't tear up the paper please don't tear up the paper Dario please don't tear it up so diana's not a dame and targaryan move I know right dana is like put up at this act of being like you know very very like kind of acquiescing to everything, right? Mm-hmm. Yeah, Barriston is really doing a good job of keeping that balance and keeping him somewhat in check.
Starting point is 01:05:12 And Dario isn't even just mad about the deception. I think also something that he's mad about as we go along is the reminder of his station and who he is. Like, he can't read, first of all, he can't read the writing, but also it's like in a language he can't easily read, right? And so these guys are bringing something to Dan. that Dario cannot give her. That's true. That's true.
Starting point is 01:05:37 In a lot of ways. He can give her his dick over and over and over again, but he can't give her what they're bringing. Yeah. That piece of home, that thing that she's looking at longingly and desiring. Like, this is what she desires more than anything. It's a step towards the throne. Honestly, low-key, what Dario offers, from what I've heard,
Starting point is 01:06:02 other people's lives what Dario offers in terms of like actually bringing that orgasm might be rarer than whatever the fuck these guys are bringing like a lot of people are offering Westrose I literally think this nope I don't know that I think it but I do think it now I've crystallized this thought it's in my heart now
Starting point is 01:06:22 um Danny reads the scroll she recognizes some big names Willem Derry Viseris those are big names in this story. Wow. It's a secret pact. It's promising Viseras and Arien in marriage in exchange for Dorn's aid to take the throne back, reclaim the throne. Barriston thinks Robert would have destroyed Dorn if he'd known about this and Danny understands the secrecy. Immediately she thinks if Veseris knew this existed,
Starting point is 01:06:52 he would have dropped everything and gone to Dorn to claim his throne. And Frog agrees that Robert's wrath would have come down on Dorn if anyone had known about it. Frog then reveals himself as Frog Prince Quentin Martel, the Prince of Dorn, her loyal subject. Danny laughs, she does call him a frog prince, and she asks, have you come to marry me to? The language of a secret pact, though, like, it's giving, it's giving First Men and the Children of the Forest. It's giving pact of ice and fire, right? Like, just a little. Mm-hmm. Even though I guess those weren't, like, introduced yet.
Starting point is 01:07:31 I do think this was a huge misstep on her part to laugh and not explain it in the common tongue. Right? She does explain it, but she only explains it to the people who don't speak, Westerosi. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. And just like how men hate when a woman's more successful than them, and we've examined this through Jarrett's Drinkwater back when we did the Bairson chapters that I don't remember that well and do want to redo
Starting point is 01:08:01 men fucking hate to be laughed at. Oh yeah, that's true. Also, the perception of being laughed at it's like a, they perceive it as emasculating, a loss of power, especially when it comes from like a woman who holds more power than them, which is what's happening with Denaries, right? And like, that's how it's perceived
Starting point is 01:08:23 by these fucking bozos who are with Quentin. I don't think Quentin thought about it that much. But these fucking bozos Just drink water fucking thought about it Because he's a fucking like I'm not gonna go down that I have thoughts Anyways
Starting point is 01:08:38 We also see it in the way that Tywin stresses how much he hated That Titus was laughed at right And he doesn't want his son To be someone who is laughed at So like There's all that And I even think back to like the beginning
Starting point is 01:08:56 of the whole story, right? Like, the way that the others laugh at Weymar Royce, right, in their, like, strange icy tongue. So, I don't know. I, but also, like, I assume she does it in such, like, a good-hearted way. Like, Quentin's, like, I'm not thinking of anything of it, but obviously these guys, other guys suck.
Starting point is 01:09:16 But, um, also, I would have laughed. Not because of the story. Like, if I were into Neri's position, I would have laughed because I was like, oh, that's so weird and awkward. Uh-huh. Why are you here? Why is that what's going on here?
Starting point is 01:09:30 But also, that's why I'm not a queen. In that place. I'm not a political leader because I can't hold that back. I'm like, oh, what do you mean? There are some other reasons, but yeah, that is one of them. Yeah. I would do a bad job. And we're going to get into those.
Starting point is 01:09:48 No, I'm just kidding. He admits, well, my father had kind of hoped we would get married since, you know, Viceris is dead who's on the pact and Dario mocks him Jaris defends him Skahaz and Reznak argue well Dorn's worthless
Starting point is 01:10:05 compared to a Giscari king and Quinton retorts Dorn holds 50,000 spears Danny silences them saying her guest will be treated with courtesy and she explains that unfortunately it is much too late I must marry his dar
Starting point is 01:10:19 but stay for the wedding and she gives them some really nice beds and chambers to be in so that's nice. It's very hospitable of her. Later, when Erie removes her crown, Danny tells Dario and Barristan, despite the appearance of the frog prince, nothing changes. Dario fumes that they deceived him. Embarrassin's like, well, they bought you and fooled you, and he doesn't deny it necessarily.
Starting point is 01:10:44 Danny studies the parchment again, realizing it must have been written in Bravo's in the house with the red door. She recalls her nightmare of blue lips and wonders if Hizdar serves the war if she should marry the Dornish prince instead. When she asks Barristan, what are House Martel's arms again? He tells her a son, pierced by a spear, the sun's son, the pale mare, the lion, the dragon, beware the perfumed seneschal. Can we just say, bravos, can we fucking put it to rest?
Starting point is 01:11:18 It's bravos. Like, put it to rest. Give it a day. That lemon tree is in bravos. It's there. Yeah. Yeah. Like this is the reason it was leading up to was the pact.
Starting point is 01:11:30 The pact is the answer. There's no like big secret beyond this. The pact was the big answer to why there was the lemon tree that she remembers in Bravo. It was at the sea lord's manse. This is it. You guys. I do not believe it matters beyond this. Do not tell me.
Starting point is 01:11:47 Do not tell me it's lemongate. Especially when you have money, like you can make a lemon tree grow. You can buy anything. Yeah. Like, you can make it happen. And by that, I mean, like... Okay, until, like, my other friend, like, fucked up. We were growing a Dwarfmeyer lemon tree.
Starting point is 01:12:08 And there was winter, you know? Like, it's doable. It's fucking doable. I, like, legitimately feel that way. Yeah. I do think so. You can do anything you put your mind, too. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:20 Well, in, like, you know... Which in reason. John's building a fucking greenhouse, okay, like. Yeah, look at Winterfell. Maybe the lemon tree was in Winterfell. Oh, my God. Wait, we should... I'm just kidding.
Starting point is 01:12:34 No, we should make that happen. We should make that happen. Um, anyways. I'm about to. We have a line. Dreams and prophecies. Why must they always be in riddles? I hate this.
Starting point is 01:12:47 Oh, leave me, sir. Tomorrow is my wedding day. And like, she's just saying random things again. And again, like, I don't think Bereson has a context. Bereson is probably like, what? When she says all this, what? Yeah. Yeah, she's a real poetic, weird kid.
Starting point is 01:13:04 That's for sure. He's probably like, damn, I've known some weird Targary and Queens, but this one's kind of a weirdo, too. I get it. That's why Rhaegar, maybe he was having Dragon Dreams. Maybe that's why he was such a good musician. He just took all that shit, put it to music, and was like. Wow. Wow. One of the best lyricists of our time. No, for real. Like, I'm thinking right now of like whatever Tenaries is going through him, like that would fucking bang, like as song lyrics. That's it.
Starting point is 01:13:33 Yeah, they're bars, dude. She's out here writing Lana Del Rey's next fucking album. The Sun, beware the perfumed seneschal, but like, sad girl. Hold on. Give me a jazz beat. Like, beware the perfume, sanisha. Oh, the sun, sun, sun. The Crackin, you know Remember, remember Yeah, like real Lana Bridal Fy
Starting point is 01:14:01 Daughter of Death Oh, that's so Lana Yeah, right, that's really Right, okay Brighter Fires Wait Blue jeans Yeah, wait a second, wait a second
Starting point is 01:14:15 Dragon Scams Yeah Dragon Dreams Duh I'm dragon dreaming That's like the whole episode now, Chloe, not me restiling. You said we couldn't talk about poop. You said we could not talk about poop.
Starting point is 01:14:31 So here I am singing Lana Del Rey songs instead. Nobody asks for us. I'm making them up. Nobody asked for us to not talk about poop. But we heard it in our hearts. So this is what you get instead. We got it through a glass candle. We hear a lot of things there.
Starting point is 01:14:47 That night, she and Dario, fuck. Every which way. The text tells you all ways that you can. 269, nice. But when the sun rises on her wedding day, he leaves. She's like, where are you going? I forbid you from fighting today. And Dario calls her cruel, saying he needs amusement while she's wed.
Starting point is 01:15:08 She says by nightfall she'll have no foes, but he says the days long, and he'll be bringing her back, Brown Ben Plum's head for a gift. She says no heads, except for that one. No heads. that wants Dario used to bring her flowers and he says well his dar can pick you flowers now maybe not himself but he has servants to do it with
Starting point is 01:15:30 Oof Listen there's a Miley Cyrus song about this No I hate that song so much Really? I do not I do actually like that one It came out when I was driving to work all the time So I would hear it on the radio every day And then you would change the channel And it would be on the next channel
Starting point is 01:15:47 And you'd change a channel And then it would be on the next channel Like, insane. So now I'm going to hear it all night. Thanks. I fucking hate your guts. I do think he loves her, right? Because, like, the wedding was one thing.
Starting point is 01:16:03 Like, he was prepared to fuck her even while she was married and deal with the whole, like, she's with someone that she doesn't love. But I think the Quentin thing made it much more of a reality for him that she's a queen. Her duty is always to the crown and not to his sword, either one. her duty will always be marrying for the crown first. Like, she would have married Quinton out of duty before she would have married Dario, right? Like, that's the truth. Like, if his Dar, if something happened to him that evening, she would then begin to explore how to marry Quentin for her duty to the Iron Throne,
Starting point is 01:16:40 to get her family's house back, to take the crown, to get the usurper's dogs out of the throne room, quote unquote, wherever they are. And of course, by the chapter's end, we'll start to mirror this even more closely with her mother and Sir Bonifer Hastie, which we'll get into. But there is such a sad truth emerging for both of them and what she's realizing here. Like his station is reinforcing itself on him, her station reinforcing itself on her. And here, you know, there's that line where she says, you can't leave, like don't leave, don't fight.
Starting point is 01:17:16 And he's like, well, what am I supposed to do? She never really considered. What is he supposed to do? What is he supposed to do? That's not a full life either. Yeah, that's a good point. No one's considering Dario's emotions in this. Except for Chloe.
Starting point is 01:17:35 Except for me. Except for Chloe. Chloe cares. Yeah, I do care. I'm very different. I'm not like other girls. Oh, my God. Not like other girls.
Starting point is 01:17:45 She cares about Dario. Yeah. You guys can't see it, but Chloe is primping. As she said all that, she, like, threw her hair back a little, like, just kind of smoothed it out. And she has it in vertical style, truly video podcast style. I love, I do love what you said here. Like, I didn't really think about it. The Quentin stuff is kind of what's making it all real.
Starting point is 01:18:13 And besides the fact that, like, you know, she's always going to put the duty there. Like, it's making it real that she might not fucking stay here, right? Like, maybe he's like, whatever. Her heart will never truly belong to his dar, and she'll, like, be here. But Quentin can give her something she actually wants. And that's Spears, but that's also home. Her, like, heart's true desire. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:18:42 That is her desire. That's what she wants. Wow. Big sad. But I think you're right. I think he does, like, legitimately care about her. And it is hard to believe. And maybe he would lose interest in her if she gave up the queenship.
Starting point is 01:18:57 I don't know. I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. He asks if he has leave to go, and she says no, thinking that one day he will not return. He will be killed. One day, she would lose him, like she lost Drogo. But not today. That's a line from Game of Thrones.
Starting point is 01:19:17 she commands he come back and kiss her and then commands him to fuck her it was meant playfully she didn't like really she wasn't really commanding him he never really consented to a dom sub relationship um but his eyes hardened at her words and he tells her that fucking queens is king's work and if his dar can't attend to that then he has servants for that too she has a dornish boy now and his pretty friend now so she could call on them instead Ouch Ouch Well And I'm not saying it's a pattern But I would have three nickels If I counted her teasing people With commands on their lives
Starting point is 01:19:57 From last chapter and this check Well, I don't remember the teasing ones But there are like a lot Where you and I discuss like I don't know about that phrasing Which what's the, can you remind us What's the other one from like last chapter? No legitimately, please remind me
Starting point is 01:20:12 No, there were literally two last chapters she said it about what is it Zago or Ogo that comes back and is suddenly sexy Like he's his life is mine Yeah I own his body
Starting point is 01:20:24 Yeah his life is mine Fighting over him Mm-hmm Yeah And then grayworm saying This one's life is yours Yeah yeah agreed Agreed
Starting point is 01:20:33 She's just collecting souls Is all I'm saying Very slowly Soulkeeper the anime Oh That's kind of cool though This is this is boss So boss of her, that's so...
Starting point is 01:20:46 Well, I'm also thinking of, like... Laudeau re-coded. I'm also thinking of, like, in Dark Souls and stuff, your currency is souls. You, like, kill and you collect the souls, and that's what you used to, like, barter and stuff. But if you die, you lose other souls. Yeah. It's very Grey Alice-Ellis. She has a lot of Grey Alice going on.
Starting point is 01:21:03 True. I'm also feeling Ursula. Mm-hmm. The In Little Mermaid. Poor Unfortunate Souls. Yeah, I knew where you're going. Okay, I wasn't sure. Well, we talk about Ursula.
Starting point is 01:21:14 Kayla Gwynne a lot So I need to be like clear Yeah No because you'd be talking about Earthsea Or left hand True True By the way
Starting point is 01:21:26 I watched a really good movie at the film fest called Left Handed Girl Highly recommend it It's very cute Did you relate? Yeah Yes absolutely I actually had a substitute
Starting point is 01:21:37 Tell me that my hand was the devil's hand When I was a kid in school And that I shouldn't be using it And so actually, like, seeing this movie was very, it's a, it's a family that moves to Taipei and a lot of their family members are very traditionally, culturally Chinese. And so, like, the grandpa tells the little girl she has a devil's hand. And then it's very, it's some, it's a very wild generational thing, right? So, but that did happen to me in second grade.
Starting point is 01:22:07 So for what it's worth, I was told that it's the wrong hand and I'm using the wrong hand and why am I writing with the devil's. hand. You should have been like, well, you mess with the wrong bitch. Seven-year-old, you should throw those devil's hands at her. If it comes to a movie near you, the theater near you, go see it. Highly recommend because it's actually like a very like familial dramedy and heartwarming. So very good. I digress.
Starting point is 01:22:31 I digress. We've never done that on this podcast. Digressed. I love this bit of passage right here. He strode from the bedchamber. He's going to make a sortie. Danny realized. and if he takes Ben Plum's head, he'll walk into the wedding feast and throw it at my feet.
Starting point is 01:22:48 Seven save me. Why couldn't he be better born? So funny. Very cute. Very cute. Sad. Funny. It really does remind me of like the little finger stuff, which I'll come back to in a sec. And like when Dario's gone, Mastande brings her goat cheese and olives and raisins, seeing that Dineri surely needs her strike today. She's a small girl She's kind of funny coming from Missing like, okay
Starting point is 01:23:19 Yeah Missonde says it isn't too late for Denarius to change her mind But Denarius, she thinks that it is Missonde argues that, well, Denarius, you don't even love him And would sooner have another She's like, I heard those screams I don't know what they mean, but I heard him But the queen loves where she must,
Starting point is 01:23:39 not where she will, Danny says And commands that the food be taken away. She must bathe. She prepares for the wedding, needing help to wind the to-car and its many pearls around her and thinks of her first wedding beneath the stars with Drogo. Dang, widow vibes. Um, she wonders if it would be the same with His Dar, but she thinks that she is no longer the girl that she was, and his dar is not her son and stars. Resnach and Scahas escort her to the temple of graces with her palanquin. The world. worst father of the bride giving away ever.
Starting point is 01:24:17 The Miranese prefer the palanquins and litters, which are born on the shoulders of their slaves, and the man of Zah. I told her that horses foul the streets while slaves do not. That's why we have them curious around, and Teney's just like, what the fuck? I freed the slaves. Why is this fucking happening?
Starting point is 01:24:34 Because litters choke the streets all the same. She tells her, I would like to saddle my silver, but Masandi says, you can't really ride it into a car. that's like the whole fucking point of why it's like that so Danny's like oh and requests a sedan chair instead and throughout all this right she's wearing her to car her wedding to car
Starting point is 01:24:53 which Chloe and I went into depth about like the other chapter and by it went into depth about we're like yes fashion sleigh but I will say you know regarding this idea of her constantly calling it the floppy ears I'll link this in the comments
Starting point is 01:25:09 I love this analysis, our friend Mighty Isabel had once upon a time written one likening to the way that De Nerees talks about the floppy ears to like the way that it's portrayed
Starting point is 01:25:25 in the Wizard of Oz with Oz, Emerald City. I almost said Alice. That's what the fuck am I thinking? The other Isakai, the other original Isakai. The way that Dorothy thinks about it in regards to like the rabbit people in the Emerald City of Oz so go check that out I'll let her explain it it's good and I also want to
Starting point is 01:25:50 add especially with how you read this it really brought to mine too of how every facet of the city was designed with slavery in mind and the tow cars as well are designed with slavery in mind because the point is that you cannot do physical movement in it you cannot ride a horse you have to be carried around in it and lounge in order to wear it properly and hold it in a certain very difficult way even the clothing is designed for slavery so it's surrounding danny even at her wedding she's being caged into this symbol yeah yeah that's a great point and how it ends up becoming a cage itself even everyone's imprisoned by it yep resnack lavishes compliments on her saying that this match will save the city. He's wearing a maroon samite to-car with golden fringe and tells her,
Starting point is 01:26:43 yeah, basically just is like, oh, happy day, you're getting married, and now the city will be great, and there'll be no more murder. And she's like, I really hope so. I would like to plant my olive trees and see them fruit. But while she's being very political and speaking to Resnack and using all of her social energy on him, sucks. She thinks, does it matter that Hisdar's kisses do not please me? Peace will please me. Am I a queen or just a woman? Hmm Sad It is sad
Starting point is 01:27:11 But also Queen or just a woman Yeah both Horses Mules, donkeys and elephants Are stabled in the western and eastern walls Danny finds Bellwass
Starting point is 01:27:23 Eating grapes Bairston is chatting with the Dornishmen And all break off When she arrives With Quentin kneeling to her There's this line here It does not mean anything
Starting point is 01:27:33 I just thought it was funny That the construction of these sentences were almost exactly the same of it was always dusk in the base of the great pyramid it makes me think of the opening line of the forsaken of it was always midnight in the belly of the beast
Starting point is 01:27:45 that's it sometimes people use the same instruction for things I like that um well struck your grace thank you sometimes there are only so many ways you can write a sentence um
Starting point is 01:27:59 so we then get a discussion with Quentin and Barrison around Prince Doran's strength is failing and once more Quentin brings up the idea of an alliance and she's like oh rise and smile frog and be happy for me on my wedding day
Starting point is 01:28:21 she says that she will look to Doran for help someday you never know Hizdar might die she says which I'm like oh my god Danny that's so wow who's the brazen beast now she will take the nation she says but for now she must wed when the procession turns to the temple of graces she asks barriston who would her mother and father have married if they could have chosen he tells her of her mother who was mindful of her duty but as a girl she loved a young knight of the stormlands and he he even wore her favor once an attorney he named her queen of love and beauty
Starting point is 01:29:00 the day Rayalla wed the knight put his lance away forever becoming pious sad we have a line of his passion was impossible of course a landed knight is no fit consort for a princess of royal blood and she thinks and Dario Naharis is only a cell sword not fit to buckle on the golden spurs of even a landed knight said wamp saddest trombone ever sad as fucking violin but back to the fun part of the puzzle
Starting point is 01:29:38 Bonifer Hastie Bonifor Hastie is the knight who Rayella loved and I really love that in order to solve this puzzle if you don't have the A World of Ice and Fire app where it was revealed
Starting point is 01:29:51 because there are some little secrets that were revealed on that app including this Bonofer Hastie you have to kind of puzzle it out with Jamie 3 in a Feast for Crows. And I think that's really fun because then you have an answer here for Jamie as well in this chapter. So it's like a call and response that George is doing with the puzzle pieces between Jamie 3 and Danny 7. Jamie one time called him a solemn stork of a man with a stern, sad face.
Starting point is 01:30:23 And Jamie doesn't even know the truth. In Jamie 3, he says, hasty hailed from the stormlands so had neither friends nor foes along the trident no blood feuds no debts to pay no cronies to reward he was sober just and dutiful and his holy eighty-six were as well disciplined as any soldiers in the seven kingdom and they made a lovely sight as they wheeled and pranced their tall grey geldings little finger had once quipped that sir bonifer must have gelded the riders too so spotless was their repute All the same, Jamie wondered about any soldiers who were better known for their lovely horses than for the foes they'd slain. They pray well, I suppose, but can they fight? They had not disgraced themselves on the Blackwater, so far as he knew, but they had not distinguished themselves either. Sir Bonifer himself had been a promising knight in his youth, but something had happened to him. A defeat, or a disgrace, or near brush with death, and afterward he had decided, jousting was an empty vanity and put
Starting point is 01:31:25 his lance away for good and all. So sad. That's the sad as shit in the world. And like, okay, Jamie, interesting because something happened to you when you were supposed to have been a promising night in your youth too, huh? And then, of course, this against like the heiress conversation is really great to like compare all with because that's like, you know, Jamie, that's part of your story is also related to this.
Starting point is 01:31:50 It's a piece of this puzzle in some way with Aries and Joanna. Yeah. Um, maybe, maybe a real piece, like a sperm piece, we don't know. But I do really, you feel for Bonifer, when you read that passage and you realize all of his promise, all of his everything, yeah, he did have probably a nearby brush with death, because she had to marry Aries and he wasn't known for being very forgiving. Uh, that's true. A defeat, a disgrace, a disgrace of being rejected by the beautiful,
Starting point is 01:32:23 queen that he loved that he could never have. Yeah. Bummer. I didn't consider the fact that Aries might have like sussed it all out and been like, you got to pack it up, right? Like, we don't want to get into much power. Or that he knew that was next. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:32:39 And so Bonifere was like, I got to go hide. He was like, I've never, I've never been interested in any woman in my life. I only love the gods. I love God. Yeah. The maiden. Praise to the maiden. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:32:55 Poor fucking sad sack. Yeah. That's interesting. I mean, obviously much sadder. Sadder for Rayella, but. I can't believe I'm sad for a man. Not even once, you know? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:33:10 I mentioned this earlier, but the whole discussion about, like, a man who isn't of a station to marry the woman that they want. And that woman being regretful about it, right? I think this is one of those narratives that George is kind of interested in. just because other, like, American canonical writers are, like, it's very great Gatsby-esque, you know, speaking of Lana Del Rey. Uh-huh. And it's also a subtle reminder, in my opinion, of, like, Littlefinger. Like, Littlefinger's narrative is very much inspired by Jay Gatsby. This did happen to your friend Littlefinger.
Starting point is 01:33:48 Uh, yeah. And, like, the circumstances are obviously different in that Cat, like, Cat, was like, bro, what do you mean? Like, don't ruin the friendship. And Liza was all like, I'm going to take advantage of you and all this stuff. But, like, you know, they couldn't even make that marriage happen because he was of too low a station and he chose instead to like, be like, all right, fuck that. I'm going to go rise in station until I'm a great lord, until I'm a param, Lord Paramount, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:34:21 Social Network, Westrose Edition. Yeah, to become good enough of a station to be worth marrying, and yet, and yet, you know. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, he chose to grind, where Bonifer chose never to grind again. Yeah. True lovers only, true lovers only. It might have been, like, better in terms of peace for everyone else, right? Like, that's also, I guess, what's being explored here with Denierrez and his dar and Dario, even though it's not a true piece because of the,
Starting point is 01:34:53 the slavery, but whatever. Yeah. Yeah, because literally everything about it is no longer a true piece. Like, there are still slaves in the streets, carrying people on Palin Keynes. Yeah, I'm like, what was it for?
Starting point is 01:35:11 But I mean, like, obviously, arguably it's better. You know, I can't be like, what is it for? Let's see what happens in 200 years, right? We're shit's still bad, and people just, like, bust down in your door and shoot you for no reason, right? But like strides, and you have to fight for each stride
Starting point is 01:35:28 every day. That's it. What am I talking about? You all know, but also why? So, Aries had wanted more than he loved, Barriston said, and that's kind of how he trails off. He's like, he wanted more than he ever loved. And Danny's like, well, I want to know the good and the rest about him.
Starting point is 01:35:51 Do you? And he, and he, He continues telling her that Aries was taken with Tywin's cousin, but Tywin and her wed. And at the wedding feast, Aries drank too much and made many a drunken jape about taking the Lord's right to the first night with Lady Joanna. And he took liberties during the betting ceremony. And then Barrison's like, I've said too much. I've said too much. And they arrive. Darn, they cut it off right when we're about to get the good stuff.
Starting point is 01:36:20 Meeting his d'ar on his own sedan matching her. She wonders where Dario is, thinking if this were a story, he would gallop up and challenge his d'ar for her hand. But it's not a story. And they move side by side to the temple where her doom awaits her. It is a story. So you don't know that. This is real. This happened to my friend Danny once.
Starting point is 01:36:44 Yeah, totally crazy. This is a documentary. Yeah. It actually might be. So, the other side of the history lesson with her father, we haven't had as much of the rebellion answers in her plot, right? Like, we get a couple teases here and there, but this is kind of a piece of the big rebellion tapestry that we've been weaving throughout all of the books. It's not like Brand 3 and Asos, right? Like, we haven't had a very, like, heavy lore drop chapter in a while, so kind of fun.
Starting point is 01:37:19 in the world of ice and fire there is a similar line it has been reliably reported however that king aries took unwanted liberties with lady joanna's person during her betting ceremony to time's displeasure not long thereafter queen raella dismissed joanna from her service no reason for this was ever given but lady joanna departed at once for castorly rock and seldom visited king's landing thereafter Yeah, it's suspicious. I don't know about there, but I do think, like, the timing lines up for a couple of other characters. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 01:38:01 Mm-hmm. Yeah, that's true. That's true. You never know. We're going to show up here in SOS. Yeah, maybe, maybe. We're painting a story here that Jamie is narrating, right? The Answer 4 and Jamie 3, A Feast for Crows.
Starting point is 01:38:17 but also it's linking to a lot of why Jamie's childhood and coming back to what you were talking about with Tywin and him distrusting and disliking laughter why his adulthood has become what it was and why his childhood was what it was with Tywin at the helm. It kind of does a great little loop back to Jamie and starts to really also kind of remind you of the connection between the plot with Danny and Jamie.
Starting point is 01:38:44 Although it's very distant, there's a lot of familial history. history going on here. Yeah, there is. It's, that is kind of interesting how much of this is intertwined with, like, the way that Jamie reveals it. Like, as you said, the Bonifur Hasty stuff and, huh. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:39:03 Yeah. Kingsguard. Kingsguard. It would be really interesting to see what happens if Jamie and Bairson meet once more. Especially as Barrison has been the one recounting, like, Yeah, so your dad wasn't the best. Anyway. Denarius tries to appreciate the golden domes and the beauty of the temple, but all she can think about is Dario, saving her, taking her at sword point like Rhaegar had with the Northern Girl.
Starting point is 01:39:35 It's very, it's very a free folk tribe mating ritual coded. Um, but that would be folly. The brazen beast would cut him down. Galazagalari and her sister's weight outside, though, fewer than there were prior. And Danny wonders if the flocks had taken Azara as well, because it had been spreading amongst the freedmen, the cell swords, the brazen beast, Dothraki, but so far, not the Insalid, and, you know, not seeing certain members there, it does, like, trigger something, like, oh my God, it's the Redmedic all over again, right?
Starting point is 01:40:11 But in that, like, whole anxiety. But there is a real danger here, and it is the illness. So it could probably just be the illness. but also like the unsullied being it's called out that the unsullied have been untouched and like you know love these hygienic practices for them that they've been like taught that and I kind of wonder like are they consuming water from somewhere else as well like based on wherever their station so yeah their camp is in a different place yeah turns out hygiene's like important good for them yeah and I do think I love your first note because I was thinking of olivar uh and And Azara is from House Paul. So going back to what we talked about a few chapters ago, you know, all the men of House Paul are dead. We had that line, a house of women now, bitter old woman with a taste for blood.
Starting point is 01:41:00 Women do not forget. Women do not forgive. So I do think this adds to kind of like Danny's maybe not necessarily like ignorance, but she is somewhat ignoring politics. I mean, it's a big day, right? Like she's busy today. She, yeah, she's got a lot going on But there is a lot happening in the politics
Starting point is 01:41:19 That maybe for us we're seeing it And Danny isn't necessarily paying attention to it But also isn't necessarily like Giving a shit about it anymore Because she's half heartbroken, half cunt struck Chardario And dealing with Quinton And dealing with thoughts of the Iron Throne and home
Starting point is 01:41:38 And thoughts of her family And thoughts of having to marry his daughter Like there's a lot going on Yeah But also So then we have what's to come here in the ceremony with the ceremony going her way, right, that she, and we'll talk about it, is getting all of the rituals of the ceremony, kind of flipped, kind of reversed.
Starting point is 01:41:58 Like, it's happening to her, not her having to do them to her king. The king's doing them to the queen. So I do feel like there's a definite, like, sense of false security being laid. Obviously, the next two chapters change a lot of things. then chapter 10 just like puts it all on the fucking bloop on its ass but i do feel they were very much trying to lull her into this false sense of security and like maybe they did pull azara maybe azara was pulled because house paul can't afford right now for that to happen maybe house paul is plotting something i don't know yeah i also know that you keep saying it aloud
Starting point is 01:42:39 I'm like, is it like a reference to Paul Atreides? I don't know, somehow. Ah, no, I'm being serious. Maybe, no, I don't think so. Yeah, I like this term you used construct. I haven't heard it really before. It makes me think of another term popularized lately by a person of our times, Taylor Swift,
Starting point is 01:42:58 digmatized, you know, that's where she's at. Certainly a person. Yeah, but as you said, like, you know, she is being lulled into this false sense of security, and thinking like the marriage is enough and like the thing is like it's not you need the force you need force there and like it's in your streets they're just doing it in front of you yeah like on your wedding day yeah true when you literally can't fight back because you're in a sedan having to be beautiful forever to look at you yeah it's not good we have the ending of our chapter of molding her to car dainting so as not to tread upon its fringes, Denarius Targaryen eased herself onto the chair's plush velvet seat,
Starting point is 01:43:46 and his darsolorak went to his knees and unlaced her sandals and washed her feet whilst 50 eunuchs sang and 10,000 eyes looked on. He has gentle hands, she mused, as warm, fragrant oils ran between her toes. If he has a gentle heart as well, I may grow fond of him in time. when her feet were clean Hisdar dried them with a soft towel laced her sandals on again and helped her stand hand in hand they followed the green grace
Starting point is 01:44:17 inside the temple where the air was thick with incense and the gods of geese stood cloaked in shadows in their alcoves four hours later they emerged again as man and wife bound together wrist and ankle with the chains of yellow gold Oh, the symbolism
Starting point is 01:44:36 I do appreciate that at least Hazar understood the memo of the flow of power and was the one who washed her feet but I do think now that I think about it this ending line of Emerges man and wife and was like, why is she just some guy's wife you know, why not the other way around Man and woman or woman and husband
Starting point is 01:44:56 you know, that's someone's husband Herstery Yeah, that's someone's son Someone's father, you know? But I'm just like... Every guy is just someone's like father and son, you know? Like, you got to treat him that way. I mean, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:45:14 I know this is kind of radical, but sometimes I start to think that men might be their own people. That's really interesting. I'm not, like, sure I'm there yet, but like, that's real... Jesus. I'm not allowed to talk about poop, so I guess I'm going to be a misinterest for the rest of my life. This is what...
Starting point is 01:45:32 We heard it in our hearts. No one wanted the poop. We heard your complaints. You didn't send them, but we hurt them. I've been to shorter Catholic weddings. You know what I mean? Like, four hours, damn. Four hours is a lot.
Starting point is 01:45:49 Like, usually I think, like, yeah, three hours. I mean, like, it can be... There are weddings that are, like, multi-day long, but it seems more fun. Yeah. Like, you got to break it up a little as all. Like, four hours. I probably got stuck. stuffy in there with all the incense, um, and it's got to be hot as shit.
Starting point is 01:46:06 Yeah. No AC. What are they even doing, you know? And like, yeah, we don't even cover the ceremonies. Maybe, do you think it took that long to cleaner feet? Were they that dirty? It's possible. Like, so it is kind of interesting, like, initially that she was supposed to do it.
Starting point is 01:46:24 Like, it makes me think of, it was an act of great humility when, when Jesus, a messianic figure. Just like Denaries. He was the one going around washing people's feet, and that was considered, like, very radical because the feet are the dirtiest part of the body during that, in that culture, because, you know, they're wearing sandals. There's shit on the ground. They're still pretty gross, yeah. Like, literally. Even with shoes on, like, good sweat. As you all heard from last episode.
Starting point is 01:46:53 So. No, absolutely. I love the flip. sucks to know that they're just doing it for appeasing her, but like, you just know, like, why else would he be doing this?
Starting point is 01:47:12 He doesn't really care, obviously, in general. He's like, whatever. Everyone's still going to high-five me, you know? Like, they're going to be like, dude, Mother of Dragons, you got her. Well, even besides that, it's like, he's like, I'm not going to get caught up. I'm not going to get caught up
Starting point is 01:47:28 in the image. of it and the language of it, what matters is the policies that get enacted and the actions that happen. And am I like saying something like here? Maybe. Wait, me. Not but I mean, it is true. It's not like incorrect. Like that is what's happening. Like she unfortunately is caught up in all of these trappings of power and how they present. And she has to think about it every step of the way. But for his dar, he's like, nah, I'm business. Yeah, and I mean, he's up in those pyramids. He's telling them, like, listen, when I'm king, you'll get your slave trade back.
Starting point is 01:48:08 Yeah. But what I need from you for 90 days is this. And if you guys can commit for 90 days, then don't worry, I'm going to get you slavery going again. You're going to be even richer than you still are. Don't worry. Yeah. And I mean, like, the trappings matter, right? We've been talking about it.
Starting point is 01:48:25 The trappings matter. But at the end of the day, the material difference, right? Like, the trappings and whatnot, like, the material difference it makes in people's lives is, like, the actual, like, don't lose sight of that, you know, over the performance. And when you start to compromise your campaign to appease those trappings of power, instead of having that be the additional, that is kind of the problem. Yeah. There's no negotiating with these fucking bitches in Marine. That's what we've learned. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:49:04 Not now. This was a thick boy. This wedding chapter was thick. Yeah. We went way over the amount of time that we thought we would. Yeah. But that's okay. That's okay.
Starting point is 01:49:17 I feel like that sometimes, yeah. Thanks for hanging out with us at this wedding. Hopefully it's not her last one. You know, I'm still rooting for. one more for her. I think it could happen. You never know. Um, what? No, I'm just like, deciding with whom? Because I like, I don't think, I think she will have a very true love with John, but I don't think they'll get married. Yeah. I don't think they'll have time. No, you're right. It probably isn't going to be, well, unless they get married, like in an unofficial way, you know,
Starting point is 01:49:48 like in the forest, RLJ, kind of. I do think she can't, she could possibly get married a third time. I just don't know that it's to John. You know? Yeah. I think that Hizdar looks like lucky number ex-husband, number one. Yeah. I mean, we did get that. I do think that there's a little Tyrion Sonsa parallel here too.
Starting point is 01:50:10 Like, I do think that she'll be able to set him aside and the marriage aside because it wasn't done. And especially because of the focus last chapter on if you get married in the Miranese way, if you don't, it's not recognized. I think that's going to spin opposite for her that. But she, like, Rolour might not recognize the Giscari gods. Have you thought about that? Yeah. They might not recognize that the Temple of Graces is where this took place. They might not recognize her marriage at all.
Starting point is 01:50:37 Or if she doesn't take up Rolore, even the seven gods may not recognize this at all. Well, also, especially if she's a god in the Rolore region, like Rolore religion or like an incarnation of one. The thing about being a god is you get to make up your own fucking rules, right? Like, and that's a big part of what the story is exploring. So, like, are you a Targaryen or not, girl? Mm-hmm. Make it up.
Starting point is 01:50:59 Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Amen. Amen. Seven gods. Amen. Amen.
Starting point is 01:51:04 Like, I don't know. Put your dragon's mouths next to them and say, bitch, am I married now? Yeah. But also, I don't know. Is it, like, hotter if she and John never get married? I don't know, you know? But also, like, we had a little house Weber nod here. You know, his art.
Starting point is 01:51:24 He doesn't have. to live he doesn't have to live she said Jesus Danny she's out there just saying that casually to fucking Quentin yeah no with Quentin she was just like
Starting point is 01:51:41 you never know she's like I'm bringing back I'm bringing back polygamy we're doing it my way now yeah that's what waking the dragon's about to be in chapter 10 msandry I'm joking.
Starting point is 01:51:56 Not Ms. Andri, her best and most capable servant. Miss Andry. Wait, that's really good. It's my favorite character. That's my favorite character. She should have a POV. Oh, my God. Thank you for listening today.
