Starting point is 00:00:17 Hello and welcome to Girls Gone Canon reads A Song of Ice and Fire episode 282, Tyrion 1 in a clash of kings. I'm one of your hosts, Chloe. And I am another one of your hosts, Eliana. Yes, we are here. We are continuing our journey to finish our final. P.O. Fee. There will be probably a few more breaks because of the holidays and the Night of the Seven Kingdoms. because I remember that was coming out.
Starting point is 00:00:48 And welcome back for those of you that are longtime listeners. Welcome if you're new. Hello. Welcome. Welcome. Welcome, East Siders. Welcome. Welcome.
Starting point is 00:00:59 Everyone say hi to all the new folks in the chat. Oh, my God. Yeah. I am really glad to be back. We had a really fun hot D season three. But I was telling you earlier, it did feel even just like putting some notes down for Tyrion felt right. It felt normal. It felt like putting on your favorite pair of sweatpants, you know?
Starting point is 00:01:21 It did. Though I did like have a blast during hot day season. I mean, like, it's just kind of fun to be like, wow, I don't know what's going to happen. And like to an extent, I love that I know what's going to happen in a lot of ways with Tyrion. But every single time we do a new POV and we enfold them, we do learn new things, I think, in the storyline. I do think using the muscles in that opposite way also has helped us, right? Like we've been far away from Tyrion, but also not that far. There are a lot of themes in House the Dragon that I feel like really will refocus what we focus on probably in Tyrion.
Starting point is 00:02:01 But I think you all will benefit from it, whatever your feelings on House the Dragon is, because we will be waxing. You know, we'll be waxing poetically, some would say. Indeed. We'll probably ease into it because I feel like this first chapter is a welcome back everyone from the gap between the only like one to two year gap between book one and book two, whatever. But it's also welcome back for us. So it really just works. And just like, I don't know, like just like in real life, I'm not really concerned about the timeline, baby.
Starting point is 00:02:37 You know, I'm just here to experience the story however it happens whenever it happens. Which you have the funniest opportunity right now, George. So that said, we've got a little housekeeping up top, starting off with our friend who is coming on next week. If you're listening to us right now live for the historians, next week our friend Akash will be on. He's a filmmaker and critic, and he's been on a few other podcasts that you may love and know like our friends over at the Silent Sisters. So very excited that he's coming. on next week with us and he's going to bring some really great lens to Tyrion too. And I was really hyped because he loves Tyrion and Clash that got me excited. Yeah. I love Tyrion clash. I think that
Starting point is 00:03:24 Akash will bring a really good perspective to Tyrion and like, I'm glad that Akash wanted to come on for Tyrion because I think like Tyrion, Tyrion's a good one to choose. Like I think, oh yeah, Tyrion's for the brave ones. That is how I feel about it. No, no, no. I literally feel that way. like I almost do feel like folks are afraid to come on for Tyrion. That were, they kind of like forgot about us. I don't know. That's okay. The real ones didn't like Akash.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Akash was ready. They're sad and also like there are some people, you know, they didn't forget about us, but they did forget about the story. No, that's true. We've been talking a lot about our friends that aren't maybe, aren't maybe living it every week like you and I still are. We still get together
Starting point is 00:04:14 tell our war stories. They're living life. They're just living. I love that for them. Happy, they got out alive, you know. But us, we have to keep telling this story over and over again. Here I stand, you know.
Starting point is 00:04:26 I don't know. I do not know. Why are you standing there? No, no Jora Mormont moments. No. We are going to get those. I forgot. While you're standing there, Eliana, if you're here you stand, could you regale us with what the Patreon episode will be this month, this September?
Starting point is 00:04:48 Bonus app. Who it's for? Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was. Our Patreon episode this month will be a mockingjay episode. It will be continuing our coverage of the Hunger Game series. But actually, it is very special because it is our last one. It is our last one of the Hunger Games trilogy. Yes, we are going to cover the prequels, but we're figuring out what our schedule is going to look like for that. But this is going to be the ultimate, the last. Mocking Jay slash Hunger Games trilogy episode last month. We did the first part of Act 3. This will be the second part of Act 3. And, like, honestly, it's going to be emotional. I'm sorry, it's going to be emotional.
Starting point is 00:05:32 You should be there. It's available for patrons in the Stranger Tier and Above. That's $5 and up. and we have other bonus episodes too. Yeah, we have tons of bonus episodes, not just Hunger Games, there are other stories. If you want Maury George R. Martin, we also do a ton of his novelettes and novellas,
Starting point is 00:05:51 as well as short stories. We also, we do his dark materials. For those of you that haven't traipsed into those lands, we highly suggest it. We've covered almost all of the stories in his dark materials, except for the last two. two books of the prequel series. TBA.
Starting point is 00:06:12 TBA. TBA. TBA. But also, yeah, I forgot. I actually am excited to cover and return at some point
Starting point is 00:06:20 to some of George's short stories. Absolutely. I was just telling someone get dream songs. They're interested, but they're not ready for Ace Woff. Oh, interesting. And I'm like, well, read dream songs.
Starting point is 00:06:32 If you're into short stories with a bad attention span, because that's what the person told me. read Dream Songs. Tell them to read Sam Kings. Sam Kings is a perfect story. It was my first George short story, apparently, and maybe I think it should be everyone.
Starting point is 00:06:48 I don't know. That's not true. Yeah. Get dreams songs. You'll enjoy it. What's great is you can open it and just, like, point and land on a story, and you'll enjoy it. I think what would be actually someone's best,
Starting point is 00:06:59 like, first George short story. My, I'm going to, like, give a take. Yeah. Melody. I think that should be someone's first story. short short story. I likee. Me like me like that. I like that.
Starting point is 00:07:11 I think, I think Lostlands is another really good one. That's true. Especially because it did become a movie. You know they're making a new Resident Evil movie? It's coming out this month. Hey, we also covered into the Lost Lands of the movie, so check that out,
Starting point is 00:07:27 too. And the story, and the novella. Yeah. Yeah. Lots on our Patreon. That's Patreon. That's patreon.com slash Girls Gone Canon, C-A-N-O-N, and patrons in the Thunder Tier and above also get Brappie Hour access every month. What's Brappie Hour, Eliana? Brappy Hour is where once a month, you all, and we convene via a video call on the Discord,
Starting point is 00:07:54 and sometimes there are fun in games to be had. Sometimes we play jackbox games. Sometimes we just talk about life. Sometimes we talk about, I mean, obviously, we do. talk a little bit about House of the Dragon. There was talk about Tyrion most recently, and there's much to be discussed. A lot of people showed their animals, though, and that's pretty exciting. Oh my gosh, I was just trying to think about what last month, what August was, and it was full of animals. It was full of like animal cam, because I was streaming
Starting point is 00:08:25 animal at one point. Our friend C.T. was streaming animal. I mean, Steve was there, streaming animal. We had a lot of animal going on. Lots of cats. There was some dog. there was a riveting discussion about cats versus dogs. I do feel that there were some louder voices in the chat that were on Team Cat. That doesn't necessarily mean it was an equal footing for all. I just think that more of the aggressive signs were on Team Cat. So I don't know. Anyways, that's, you know what, if you want to be involved in these debates,
Starting point is 00:08:57 you want to be involved in talking about whatever movies. We talked a lot about movies, actually. come to Brappy Hour, be a Thunder Tier patron. Our next brunch slash happy hour is September 20th. It's going to be 1 p.m. E.T. And, Eliana, what's three hours before that, your time? 10 a.m. P.T. 10 a.m. P.T. So a little early.
Starting point is 00:09:20 But it's going to be fun. Really fun time. Come hang out. Yeah. It is a fun time. Actually, yeah, I had a really good time this weekend. It was very fun. I left going, all right, I got to go do shit. I just got hungry. Good to see you guys. Yeah, it's mostly it. I was like, I'm hungry.
Starting point is 00:09:34 That is what happens. That does happen to me sometimes at Brappie Hour, and it's a good time to remind everyone you can bring a snack. It was true. Snacken. Sometimes I'll make bread. Should have been snacking. I think I've told you all this before.
Starting point is 00:09:47 But yeah. Yeah, Eliana loves doing chores or, like, domestic things. Really Rachel ringing it. Yeah. She's really Rachel rang it. What is it? Something beerfoot contessa. There's something, there's a joke there and I just don't know what it is yet.
Starting point is 00:10:06 I don't either. I'll come up with it. We're workshopping it. We did get some emails and tweets of note that we wanted to address here. We'll bring them up at some point, but mostly I want to acknowledge that our friend Tanna is concerned about Chloe and myself talk about aging. And we're fine. We're good. I'm pleased.
Starting point is 00:10:28 I am pleased. I'm pleased with myself as I age, but I am displeased with the world. Does that make sense? It does make sense. And like for me, it's like if this is what you're worried about with me, this is like the eighth warning sign. No, I'm just kidding. I'm fine. Things are fine.
Starting point is 00:10:47 Things. I mean, no, like Aliana said, things are terrible. So it's just, you know, we have to exist. And sometimes the existing sounds whineer than it is. Yeah. Yeah. I enjoy the march through time and leveling up in terms of wisdom, etc. I dislike that you lose people more as you get older and I think that only kind of ramps up. Yeah, it is pretty terrible.
Starting point is 00:11:15 Yeah. The state of the world is in shambles, but, you know, theoretically it could turn around. No, I'm being serious. I'm being such an optimist. That's crazy. That's crazy. Let's talk more about a bunch of people who aren't optimists, right? Well, some are optimists, some are not, but Tyrion, not an optimist, I think. So we can go into that. Yeah, I think first let's jump into our lightning round of what we missed between our last Tyrion chapter in a Game of Thrones. And our next one, which is the one we're going to start, Tyrion 1, Acock. We're going to start off with a lightning round.
Starting point is 00:11:54 This is crazy. This is the last time I get to do this. Whoa, wait, no, you're right. I mean, unless... This is the last time. Well, no, actually, it is the last time because even if, like, winds came out... For EGat. Like, we wouldn't be, like, reading the lightning round from EGon. I mean, maybe. Maybe in the future there's a will, there's a way. I have, like, these high hopes that, yes, I will come back to doing a lightning round in some way, shape, or form in whatever bullshitry we persist on after this. And, of course, when T. come out and then of course the book after that he has to put out so the one that doesn't have a name yet um let's cherish this right the last time we're going to do an o g lightning round i wonder if you guys will be able to hear this storm it's like crazy you guys it's storming so hard right now um oh my god not yet the last a game of thrones what we missed between books lightning round
Starting point is 00:12:50 starting with John 9. In the night, John abandons the watch to join his brother's cause, but his brothers bring him back. Catalin 11 with the dragon's long dead, why shouldn't the North rules
Starting point is 00:13:06 themselves once more? It's giving Bilbo. Why not? It is. Exactly. Why not, we ask. Well, Deney's 10. The dragons return.
Starting point is 00:13:22 Surely this won't cause any conflict to the previous statement. Whoa. Why shouldn't the North rule themselves? The dragons are reborn. Yeah. Yeah. Danny was like, nice try, North.
Starting point is 00:13:36 He's like, why shouldn't I step into the fire? Why not? Great, great tie into, of course, Tyrion's future storyline. Dun-da-da-done. Inching our way there as we enter the Clash of Kings. prolog. On Dragonstone, Crescent gives his life in an attempt to protect his son, Stanis Barathean. Wow, that actually hits so hard when you write it like that. You know what? I rewrote that one like three times too.
Starting point is 00:14:04 And that's where I landed, so I'm glad to hear. Thank you. Wow, thank you. Aria won. Aria has a John Snow-A-Gat arc and then learns from Yorin that her father was not supposed to die, frowny face. Sonsa 1. On Joffrey's name day, Santa gives her favor to Dantos Hollard. Tyrion arrives to King's Landing. That brings us to Tyrion 1 in a clash of Kings, where there's a new sheriff in town, and he's going to have all sorts of ideas of the people that previously were in his role obviously never had, could never dream of. He's going to meet none of the same roadblocks that the other hands of the Kings before him met. Right? Right. Question one. Right? Right? Right?
Starting point is 00:14:50 Is he stupid? Tyrion? No. No. No, it's worse than that, unfortunately. He's just a little booty blind right now. Happens to the best of us. Well, I just want to say, like, I know that it's truly Tyrion season, and we're so back, because last week, I was at bar trivia, and the last question was, like, which actor won the Emmy four times for Outstanding Supporting Actor and it during the 2010s.
Starting point is 00:15:24 And I was like, this is Peter Dinklage, right? And it was. And that really like, we bet 20 points on it. We were quite far behind. We like bet it. We were like, if we lose, we lose. But we were like, fuck it, let's go. And.
Starting point is 00:15:36 But first we'll win. Yeah. And this chapter's got a little bit of fuck it, let's go. That really skyrocketed my trivia team standings. We did not win because. There were a lot of other things that turns out I didn't know. Like, embarrassingly, I don't know all the names of the NSYNC members, and I failed our team as, like, the millennial woman. See, it's so hard because, like, I probably could if I sat there and dug it out.
Starting point is 00:16:02 But I'm just not really a trivia person necessarily. However, I will say that at, I did a trivia with my roommate and then one of our friends, Madeline, and us three had a little bit of all the right info that just like, she's a teacher, my roommate's a librarian and a medical librarian, and I am, you know, myself. So like, all of us put all this shit together and, like, nailed it. It was crazy. So I think I get the rush now, but I've never been a trivia person. And I would have sat there and been like, not Lena Heady. Yeah. Well, I also, I was like, I didn't realize that Peter Dinklage was, technically a supporting
Starting point is 00:16:48 actor right? Because he feels like he is one of the main roles I don't like know how they fucking decide that stuff for the Emmys and then another one that I...
Starting point is 00:16:59 That is the magic of Game of Thrones you know when you think about it where the supporting characters were more interesting than the main characters some of the time. Yeah, but I do think he is a main character and George has written as such in the 93 letter and then I also
Starting point is 00:17:12 got another one of the questions like mostly right, most of the points. Thanks to what we do here, they were asking James Cameron's last five movies that he directed. Oh my God. It's Avatar, Fire and Ash, which I know because it's like Fire and Blood. And Avatar T.W. The Way of Water. I'm so sick of it.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Oh, my God. Yes. That was good, though. I'm really happy for you. I'm glad that you got T. Wow. They all looked under their chair. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:47 Well, I guess we could start this chapter now. Sorry, all, that was like a long preamble. We had a lot to say. We're here. We're so back. In the chilly white raiment of the Kingsguard, Sir Mandan and Moore looked like a corpse in a shroud. Her grace left orders. The council in session is not to be disturbed.
Starting point is 00:18:08 I would only be a small disturbance, sir. Tyrion slid the parchment from his sleeve. I bear a letter from my father, Lord Tywin Lannister, the hand of the king. There is his seal. Her grace does not wish to be disturbed. Sir Manden repeated slowly, as if Tyrion were adullered who had not heard him the first time. Jamie had once told him that Moore was the most dangerous of the king's guard, accepting himself always, because his face gave no hint as to what he might do next. Tyrion would have welcomed a hint. I'm sorry, this like, I bear a letter from my father. It's giving like my father the invention.
Starting point is 00:18:48 of what is it, Toaster Strudel or whatever. Yeah, literally. That's literally what's happening here. There's a lot of that. Get ready for Nepo Baby chapters. True. All book. All book.
Starting point is 00:19:03 Something that really hit me in this opening paragraph was, of course, the foreshadowing for Mandon Moore's role in this book. From the very first chapter for Tyrion, you're literally introduced. I mean, the whole chapter, you're being introduced. to his ops in Kings Landing, right? And like, Manden Moore, kind of a big op, as we learn. Yeah, true. Manden Moore, looking like a corpse in a shroud,
Starting point is 00:19:30 and then dying, of course, at the end of Tyrion 15, later in this story. Even that last paragraph, Jamie had once told him Moore was the most dangerous of the Kingsguard. Seems like some important warning for what's going to happen at the end of Tyrion's chapters in this book. And I also love how prominent the language of using the shroud is in Circe and Tyrion chapters specifically, right? Lanister chapters, not so much in Jamie. There's a little in Danny, but really otherwise, like, especially the specific noun usage of shroud, of a shroud. Even, you know, Circe's prophecy, obviously, the drop of red blood hissing in a candle flame, a croaking voice that spoke of crowns and shrouds. And then, of course, the shrouded lord.
Starting point is 00:20:21 And Tyrion's connection with the shrouded lord. I kind of thought about that. I don't know. It really stood out to me here. Yeah. And maybe I'm just, like, reading these lines and these margins and these singular words and just reading them like the gospel or some shit because I've missed it. But stood out to me. I mean, it makes sense, right?
Starting point is 00:20:40 Like, the specter of death, that's redundant. Like, it definitely hangs over, like, the Lannister's story, right? like Tywood's going to die Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds And I didn't think about the shrouded lord That's true because like I don't think of him I mean obviously he's a little associated with death
Starting point is 00:20:59 But I haven't really thought of how It acts in that context But yeah Yeah and then also I mean like there's the marriage shrouds too right That kind of happen with Tyrion's storyline Later on So really really telling you Really a lot of foreshadowing here with Mandan
Starting point is 00:21:17 which makes sense, right? These were all contained in the same book. Do you feel like Manden is also like kettle black, proto kettle black here? Like is he, do you think he was doing Circe's bidding, right? This has been kind of the question. I do think so to an extent. Like I don't know that she was like doing all that stuff with him in the same way. Like I think Manden is very much into like the institutional power of it all. right and he has he's he's a little just like kind of ingrained in the system
Starting point is 00:21:54 or is it Joffrey I mean interesting I don't know I think honestly it would be funer I do serious analysis it would be much more funner if it was Joffrey right because then it correlates with the cat spa yeah
Starting point is 00:22:13 and also like I think what's important to know is that, you know, popular, like, late 90s, like, Otts singer slash actor Mandy Moore was named after this character. Come to me like, I should have been, I guess it could have been Little Finger. Well, I'll always remember. Which is not what's going to happen to anyone in this storyline. What a good fucking movie, though. Highly recommend. Highly recommend saved.
Starting point is 00:22:47 It could be Littlefinger. I guess I didn't think about Littlefinger much, especially considering him in this chapter. Hmm. Hmm. He's got plots. Well, I will say, I will say, like, I write from the get-go, and it's going to, it's a very well, like, formulated chapter with the way that it ends. We'll come back to that and varies his riddle. But, like, you're already seeing here the power dynamic, right?
Starting point is 00:23:12 Like, Tyrion's saying, well, you should let me in, because I have a letter from the hand, right? right and Manden's, there's kind of a conflict of whose orders take precedence. Is it the queens or the hands? Is it Tyrion standing in for the hand? Is it all these other people on the council? Like, where does power really lie in all of this? And we'll discuss. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:36 And again, that's kind of what points me to her grace does not wish to be disturbed. Who is funding Manden Moore? Who does the Kingsguard stand for? Mm-hmm. Much to think about, much to ponder we will discuss, like you said. Tyrion thinks that Braun and Timet could probably take care of Manton more, but probably shouldn't start the new job by killing a Kingsguard. But still, anyway, he introduces Timet and Braun to Manden,
Starting point is 00:24:04 introducing Braun as the man who bested Sir Vardis Egan to death, and he pushes his way through with his little paper shield letter to his sister, but Braun and Timet aren't invited in. Fun. Introducing Braun that way is a great shield, right? Like, he's introducing like, hey, this is the guy who bested Vardis Egan. So Manden Moore can think, ah, right, he killed Vardis Egan. This is a threat. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:31 Also, like, this is a threat. So it's fun because later Turing gets worked up over the veiled threats from Veras. When it's like, were you not also making these same threats? But also he's telling him, this is what happens to veil men that go against me, right? he was a veil man. So that's also where that little finger connection could come through, I guess. Turing can dish it, but he can't take it. I mean, in his defense, he's like had to take a lot of shit.
Starting point is 00:24:58 So I guess there's that. Yeah, that's true. Tyrion Lannister shouldered through the door, feeling almost tall. It's kind of fun rereading these and seeing some of his biggest errors in his way. Because so much of Tyrion and King's Landing is that, he's allowed at the table with the people who mocked him for being small for so long, and he, like, relishes that and having that position of power above them. And then maybe he lets it guide his actions,
Starting point is 00:25:27 and then slowly that pettiness, when his power is gone, it turns out it's just evil and nasty and a scourge, and he, like, cradles that hurt, and, like, he lets that become who he is. Oops. He really does nurse it, and it colors how he perceives everyone's interactions and like especially because you know as you were pointing out right he felt like almost tall entering and it's interesting because in a lot of ways like we know having reread all these chapters and also looking at how things go at book five tyrian like i mean tyrian you are in these circles right like by virtue of your name and your class i know like you don't always feel beloved but like i don't know that anyone really like feels like really liked everyone just seems like like they're barely tolerating each other in every single like one of these chapters,
Starting point is 00:26:21 not just Tyrion's throughout all these books for the most part. But because our introduction to Tyrion comes so much through that lens of John, he gets to take on this role of an outsider, despite very much also kind of being an outsider, right? And there's the whole intersectionality of that, which gets explored more in his storyline with Penny. but the way that that's framed even early on in the books by putting him out as an outsider gives you sort of like catharsis
Starting point is 00:26:52 every time he gets past all of these gatekeepers quote-unquote gatekeepers I think George likes doing that he really enjoys playing with that that perspective being where you're standing right from one place where you're standing Tyrion's shadow looms above you on a wall from the other you're looking
Starting point is 00:27:13 down at him and quite literally, but also in a very meta way in the story and how he plays with the role and something of what you said, you know, like how we're introduced to him as an outsider. So we do feel that, but, you know, he really is in these circles. I will say not to defend men on Maine. Whoa. You know, I don't like to defend men. Men gone canon.
Starting point is 00:27:34 It's happening. But like, it's not the same. We saw him literally walk into a room with his dad's, like, trusted advisors, some that are family to him. And they like sniggered and laughed at him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. In front of like his father. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:27:50 Like that's still pretty, you know, he's not on their level and he never will be. And that shows that that grievance he has. But I agree also simultaneously after defending the man that like, yeah, none of these people are happy. None of them feel like they're on the level. Like if you smile too hard in Taiwan's direction, he's going to be like you're on duty with the mountain. Good luck. he's a great conversationalist. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:28:14 Yeah. There's no winning. There really isn't. Like, I'm just like, do any of you enjoy each other? Like, honestly, this is why the monarchy in Westeros will never work. And the United States, USA, USA. No, I'm just kidding. I do think, I do not believe that.
Starting point is 00:28:32 Maybe some people in some of the other places, the other regions, enjoy each other. Maybe. Yeah. Like, I mean, obviously, like, Robert and Ned actually enjoyed each other. Oh, they enjoyed. enjoyed each other, yeah, their bodies. Yeah, I mean, yeah, muscled like a maiden's fantasy, you know? So, Circe is in disbelief at Tyrion's entrance, and Tyrion pauses to admire the pair of Valerian
Starting point is 00:28:58 sphinxes that guard the door. Circe asks why he's here, and he completes his quest, delivering his father's message. Various takes a letter looking at the seal and determining if it's genuine, and Cercy snatches it from him, and he's like, of course it's real and reads it. Fun little... I just love every bit... We could dissect this till like... The cows come home.
Starting point is 00:29:20 I love the Valerian Sphinxes. That felt fun. The pair of them, so, like, they're twins, like Jamie and Sertie. Like, this is Jamie and Sertie's King's Landing in some aspects now. It's not, but you know what I mean. And, of course, there's a lot of great Greek sphinx symbolism going on, right? The Greeks, they love their sphinx statues and worshipping. them and the Greeks also made all these statues and thought themselves gods, not unlike the
Starting point is 00:29:46 Valerians. And when you look at some of the old beautiful carvings, you can see of these sphinxes. Usually they have like the head of a human, the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle. And then we have different sphinxes in universe in Westeros. So the Westeros Citadel Sphinxes have the bodies of lions, the wings of eagles, and the tails of serpents. So they still have a little dragon representation there. But when Tyrion goes through the velvet at hills, he sees a Valerian sphinx with a dragon's body and a woman's face later on in the books. So I love that.
Starting point is 00:30:20 There's some symbolism of Tyrion stopping to hold the head of one of the sphinxes. I would guess that these sphinxes outside of the door might have more dragon parts of them and maybe more serpent parts. We don't really get a full, full description, but we do get to see their eyes, which are red garnet against the black. So I love that. I love the whole Valerians thinking themselves gods and some of the little bits of Valerian decorating
Starting point is 00:30:50 we still get to see around the castle. Just bits and pieces. Yeah, a great reminder of like, hey, that's where this castle came from, that's who built it. Right, that world building as well is kind of, I think, almost arguably a foreshadowing maybe for where Tyrion will find himself allied, you know, women with dragons. Yes, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:31:15 Well, Tyrion notes that Circe has taken the king's seat herself. That's so Jamie of her. And that Joffrey isn't really one for an office job. I mean, he's a child. Like, don't fucking child labor him, right? I mean, I started at age 13 or 12. I was working. Well, you would have probably also done a better job than Joffrey.
Starting point is 00:31:36 Probably, I'm definitely a better job than Searcy. I don't know. But with Joffrey, it's not unlike his father's quote unquote father's behavior, right? Not showing up to the meeting. Which is ironic because his actual father is, some would say, has a great work ethic. Like when his other fellow employees were having a really bad time, he rose up and killed their boss. You know, he's a labor king. Honestly, yeah, I mean, kind of.
Starting point is 00:32:02 I guess Jamie does arguably work pretty hard. Circe taking the king's seat herself. and I like what you kind of inferred here of her, you know, doing it. But does she really want it? I don't know. Yes, Circe has ambitions, but also being driven to do this because it's the only way that she can protect her family. And also because she realized she's surrounded by people scheming against her. So kind of fun to see her take it like out of necessity, right?
Starting point is 00:32:32 Out of total necessity because otherwise she gets sidelined and hammered. But also her ambitions, like, does she have ambitions? It really just leads to why a Feast for Crows is an amazing unraveling of her. Yeah. So good. I think, obviously, you can hear us talk more about that in the CERC chapters, which, like, you absolutely should. If you, for some reason, have not listened to us covered the CERC chapters, you should. They are great.
Starting point is 00:32:58 Yeah, my faves. Honestly, I wish we were doing them again. But I will say we kind of are. I mean, like, I mean, like, every Tyrion chapter. chapter in Kings Landing can be a Circee chapter if you're Chloe, is what I'm trying to tell you. If you try hard enough and also, I mean, like, the world's our oyster after this. We can do anything,
Starting point is 00:33:14 I guess. Um, we're free. Searcy deems the message absurd. It announces, Tyrion is to sit the small council as Hand of the King until Taiwan can arrive. And then we have this line here of Jowley balding Janoslint looked rather like a frog, a smug frog who had gotten rather above himself.
Starting point is 00:33:34 And like, I mean, I understand that's how he character I just think it's unfair to frogs. Also, I'm like, here's something for our friends about aging. I'm like, everyone gets javils. That's true. Some people are just like predisposed genetically. Also, if you think about it, do frogs like even have jowls? They like go have a wide face, right?
Starting point is 00:33:55 They're very smooth. Their skin's so smooth. Yeah, it's kind of cruel. I don't really like what George is implying about frogs. Janos clearly didn't ingratiate himself or do any favors with tier. seeing how much Tyrion hates Janos is incredible. But you know what's crazy is the seed was planted literally just a couple chapters ago with his dad. His dad hates him.
Starting point is 00:34:20 So I was like, I was really trying to understand. I'm like, why does he hate Janos slint so much? And literally it all boils down to his dad hates him and he disrespected Circe by complying with killing Ned. So you have that line from Tywin of the man's father was a butcher and they grant him Heron Hall, Haranhall, the seat of kings. And then, of course, from Searcy, Janoslint and Sir Elyn went ahead Blythly and shortened the man without a word from me later in this chapter.
Starting point is 00:34:48 Without a word from me. Oh, Circe, you're everything to me. So it's crazy to see, like, that's his family loyalty. That's how he is loyal to his family by immediately, like, forming a grudge against this man, which I'm not saying Janoslint is good. He's not good. He's a little shithead, too. But, however, I just find it very interesting why Tyrion hates him.
Starting point is 00:35:12 And he hates him because he's poor and his dad hates him. Yeah. That's literally it. But also. It needs like a shen-y-d-down. Yeah, I was like, we also hate him for a bunch of things. Yeah. I mean. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:35:24 I'm not saying give him the POV, but I'm just saying, like, does Tyrion even really know him? Maybe he's like one of those people who's like very easy to like, you know, there's some people like you get bad vibes from them immediately, which is. like not really fair to say. Like, that's kind of fucked up to say, but sometimes they exist. You know? No, I know what you're saying.
Starting point is 00:35:45 It's like when I met you. I know. That's why I'm saying it's not fair to say. Because, like, you can't just like judge someone by first impressions. But I mean, like, Janos is like a good mirror, though, in a lot of ways to people like Little Finger, to John, right? Which is, we see him being a shithead at the wall. And, yeah. Because John also someone who rose up.
Starting point is 00:36:06 is not, you know, he has a code that he lives by. He breaks a lot of the other parts of different codes, but he does have, like, his own internal, like, idea of honor and Janos does not. And I guess that's ultimately what it is, right? You can come from no money, but have some honor or, like, be up front about it, right? Because, like, Braun, no money has some sort of code, I guess. Yeah, he won't kill kids unless it's a lot of money. I mean
Starting point is 00:36:37 That's what code It is It is No for sure No for sure they would As we see amongst the other members of the Kings Guard Right Yeah
Starting point is 00:36:45 Like Janoslint is Very reminiscent of another man Who murdered a bunch of children In the rebellion And got away with it Because Tybin was like Yeah Yeah
Starting point is 00:36:56 And the other one It's interesting because like Tywin uses people like that But he doesn't seem to respect them Right They have utility to him, but he's like, ah. Wipe my hands clean, absolutely. No, well, that's like what a mob boss does.
Starting point is 00:37:14 You use the lower scum guys to do the harder shit. The ones that have nothing anyways, so they throw it away because they're like, this is my big shot to live finally. And then they die. Yeah, which Janos does eventually, but for now he's going to comment that they have need of Tyrion to calm the rebellions and rioting in the streets
Starting point is 00:37:33 beneath the omen in the sky and Sircy snarks back that Janos's gold cloaks are failing to keep order. Well, that's the real reason why we hate him, right? He's a cop. And of course, they just, they have need of Tyrion's warfare experience. Tyrion says he's done with the fields of battle. He sits a chair better than a horse, and he goes on sharing that he prefers war to the hospitality of the veil. And Littlefinger laughs at that. And I think the entire spiel that Tyrion gives here, especially because we are coming off like him, meeting Bran again, etc. Like, it's very much, I think, in dialogue
Starting point is 00:38:09 with the themes of Brand's storyline regarding the Knights of the Mind. Yeah, I do love that. I think, um, the Knights of the Mind. I do love that. And I think there's something really interesting at the end where he's kind of joking with them all. You know, we're starting to see Tyrion feel out the council
Starting point is 00:38:31 and feel out how they feel about things a little bit. So him saying, oh, I prefer war to the hospitality of the veil is interesting to hear Little Finger laugh at, right? To see how he responds and to see the mind game begin. And this is Tyrion's battle right here. His battle is right here in this room. It's somehow getting these people,
Starting point is 00:38:53 A, on his side, or B, to stop trying to kill him. They're here. Just in time to make anything happen. Maybe he should have tried harder to fight, every battle in his mind. In his mind all at once. So, Comet, we're on Comet Watch, right, again. We don't get to do this often.
Starting point is 00:39:16 And, oh, my God, the last time we'll talk about the comet right here. It's technically still there, I guess, right? Like, arguably. Yeah, I guess. In the books. We will probably still talk about it. You know, we'll probably, we still talk about you, mean. about the comet.
Starting point is 00:39:32 Yes. Yes. So we've talked about this comment like a billion times. And I don't think, did we ever bring up Caesar's comet while talking about it? Well, if we did,
Starting point is 00:39:42 I don't remember it because we've been doing this for eight years. And I am quite sure we did not during the Danny chapters. Stop me if you guys have heard this one before from me. But I think this is a common one though. This is an easy one.
Starting point is 00:39:56 Like, I just felt like, I don't think we've talked about it. And it does feel like a beautiful parallel of sorts or a thing that George is riffing on. Caesar's comet when Caesar was assassinated
Starting point is 00:40:10 about a week long comet appeared in the sky. It actually showed up during sporting games that were being held in his name for his death. The comment was bright as fuck. It was seen even during daylight, which is unusual and this became politically advantageous, I would say,
Starting point is 00:40:26 for Caesar's adopted heir Octavian. The future Augustus. going so far as becoming propaganda for Caesar having become a god after his death and therefore allowing Octavian to promote himself as the son of a god. Weirdly enough, Octavian associated himself with a Capricorn symbol, even like going as far to mint coins and shit with it in his name. But if we looked at today's judgment, he was a Libra. So I don't know, maybe it was his moon sign, but ironically, he's very Capricorn-like.
Starting point is 00:40:57 He's like very strategic and patient, controlled, status-conscious. Anyways, so fun to kind of look at Octavian as a draw-free-esque character here, right? Because his dad was a god, and now that his dad's dad, oh, now he's the son of God. Anyways, felt important, felt fun, thought you all may like it. Look it up. It's definitely a hell of a way to write propaganda about a future reign is to have a comet appear and be able to use it for like anyone. Honestly, like, pretty, it's pretty good. If I would use the fucking comment as a sign too, I use a fucking text message that comes
Starting point is 00:41:30 at just the right time as a sign. I'm like, that's a sign. You know, I'm like, you don't need more signs. You literally have enough signs. I'm just like, that's a sign. No, I'm not actually like a big signs person, but I would like, I would absolutely be like, I don't know, do you guys think the comments for me? Probably. And all I can think of is like the, again, in medieval and fun time world, he was a Capricorn. So like, is it related? Maybe. Octavius, yeah. Well, Bissary is saying about. He was a Capricorn. He was. about Octavius and therefore also makes sense with Danny's storyline. It's really all coming together.
Starting point is 00:42:08 That's so Dune Messiah. He was Paul Atradi as a Capricorn. The questions to consider. Actually, I feel like we know this. Do we? Hold on. I feel like... Fascinating. Oh, Dune Prophecy is coming back again, y'all while Chloe looks this up. When that happens, as many of you may or may not remember,
Starting point is 00:42:30 did do a Patreon episode on the first season of Dune Prophecy, which honestly eight, and we are going to probably cover it again when the second season comes out. If I were like better, a better person, I would know when it is, but I feel like it's soon because it keeps showing up in HBO's like little teaser tricklers. I think it's like either Q3, Q4 here, like October, November, December, some shit. 26 Q3 or Q4. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:43:01 I hope so. I'm dying for it. You know what? It wasn't like paralyzingly good. Like where you're like sitting in the couch and you're like, I have to keep going. That's true. But I was intrigued. There's like one or two characters that I'm like, I live for them.
Starting point is 00:43:17 Into. You know? And like that's all either of us need. It's a sign. We don't know. Paula Trades is a sign. So I'm sorry for that. That's okay.
Starting point is 00:43:25 Chloe just lied to all of us Sersie Speaking of someone who lies Sersi asks how many men they've brought back and he says a few hundred of his own men because father decided not to send any of his he is fighting a war
Starting point is 00:43:43 you know of course Sersie asks What am I supposed to do with a dwarf and his veil men against Stannis or Renly And then she complains Joffrey didn't consent To Tyrion's hand Tyrion's like all right we need to take this offline Can you guys go away so that me and my sister can talk?
Starting point is 00:43:59 And Little Finger's like, should we prepare your quarters? And Magor's hold fast. And Tyrion's like, no, I'll be living in the Tower of the Hand, where the Hand of the King lives. And Little Finger's like, wow, braver than I am, the last two hands met terrible fates. And Tyrion's like, why don't you just say the last four, if you mean to frighten me? And we get a little exposition on Aries' last hands, a Tyrion history session. Yeah, so this is absolutely, like, framed this way just for the exposition, because, like, I just disbelieve that Little Finger would not know this because he's kind of the sort of insufferable person who would know this, I think. And also, he's like, I'm just too young, I think, to know about what happened.
Starting point is 00:44:49 I'm like, isn't Little Finger, like, 29? And then Tyrion's, like, 27. Like us? Yeah, well, and he's like, I'm just too, he is like us being like, oh, I'm just too young to know this. And I'm like, I don't think that's true. If Tyrion is younger than you and knows, you should know. He clearly knows it. He clearly knows it. I think he's trolling Tyrion because I think he's trying to figure out how best to deal with Tyrion. Like, he's understood the last hands and how to outplay them. He figured that out pretty quickly. I mean, he's fucking one of their wives, right? Yeah, that's true. He's like, I want to fuck the other hand's wife. Other one, yeah, he's like all about fucking hands wives. And now Tyrion's going to get married and he's like, I want to fuck your wife too.
Starting point is 00:45:39 Oh my God. I'm just saying he's really into those wives, but like literally of course he knows those hands. Rossart's the one who killed Catalan's betrothed. Brandon, who he hates. Crayons. Oh my God. Yeah, I love him. Speaking to Tyrion's love of history, and I like to think that maybe here Littlefinger is trying to, you know, get Tyrion to go on about some of the history and let him get into it to see if that's what he's into or what kind of guy is, right?
Starting point is 00:46:08 Because, like, I think of this, like, Tyrion's big first day at work. And when you hire a very high up position for your first bit of work, people really want to know what the fuck you're going to do and what kind of person you are. And who you are the first couple weeks at a job, like, that dictates how people see you. that haven't met you before or haven't been around you before, right? So, like, this is a big time for Tyrion. And if Littlefinger sees that he can just derail all that, that he could just topple Tyrion that easily, like, this is a hard time.
Starting point is 00:46:37 Tyrion really needs to come masked. He needs to be prepared. He needs to have the best defense because these guys, I mean, they're doing it for sport now. It's like having a substitute teacher, right? At school. Sink the sub, baby. Yeah, I mean, that is what they're trying to do, right?
Starting point is 00:46:53 They're all, that's exactly what happens in this chapter. A lot of people, like, just kind of gauging, except for Paisal, who's like, I don't know, Taiwan's said easier. And Paisal's, I love Tewan. So, hell yeah, Tiran, what's up? We love Paiwin. Tyrion, Trian would absolutely know the names of the members of NSYNC. That's it. I think Tyrion could have.
Starting point is 00:47:17 Trian could have done it. Could have done what I could not. So, yeah, as you said, Aries' last hand was killed in the sack, but he was only hand for like a fortnight. It was Wisdom Rossart. And before him was the hand was burned to death. That was Carlton Chalsted. Unless you want to say Charlton. There's a cue there.
Starting point is 00:47:47 Every time. Who the last hand helped to burn to death. And before them, two more who died. Landless and Pennyless and Exile, quote-unquote, died. Maryweather and John Con. So... The quote-unquote is only about John Con, y'all. I think you also all know that.
Starting point is 00:48:11 Yeah. Mary Wether does have some nods, though, so we won't write it off yet. Oh, true, too. Yeah. Important for this story, too, I might have. Yeah. And Taiwan, he's the last. last hand to leave Kingslanding with everything intact. Hmm. I mean, kind of, right?
Starting point is 00:48:31 Like, what does vengeance and murdering children and, you know, blazing down the countryside with your troops? For people that have been fighting for a very long time, just killing them, you know, tired soldiers. They don't even know who they're fighting for anymore. What does that do, right? Like, did you leave with everything intact, Tywin, of your cold? empty heart, did you? He only did that after he was hand.
Starting point is 00:49:04 No, yeah, I think that's true. It did, like, it did really very much rob him, right? Like, and he ends up soon after, like, it seems to take a toll, perhaps, on his relationship with Joanna. And, I mean, it missed him the first time, but don't worry, we're going to get him in the second time. time around being hand.
Starting point is 00:49:28 And by we, we mean Tyrion. But because... Nothing better than getting done in by the sun. They're like, hmm-hmm. That was a mistake. That was a mistake that you got out. Tyrion. Tyrion's got you.
Starting point is 00:49:41 This is a good reminder, though, that, like, Tywin has held this position before, right? The whole exposition going on here. And also kind of, I think, plays back in, if you're thinking about it, right? With what Aria saw in the dungeon. about the whispering people being like, well, if one hand can disappear, so can another, and what that could have meant for Ned. Yeah, and I do, like, I am a slut for this kind of structure,
Starting point is 00:50:08 like where you have a repeating structure. Like, this is just like our hero's chapters, Ned Stark, right? Oh, yeah. You have the guy who's a little misunderstood, showing back up. First day of work fucking sucks. He wants to make a difference. They're not going to let him. They're all poking at his ribs.
Starting point is 00:50:25 So now you have that situation set up once more with your next lovable, beloved character. What are you going to do with that character? Well, the way it goes is a lot different than Ned. I love that. I love that comparison because it is different, right? Because Tyrion's coming in with a different set of like expertise, circumstances. And he's much more like jaded, right? He's much more cynical than Ned in his approach.
Starting point is 00:50:52 So that's great. Littlefinger says that he would sooner bet in the dungeon than the tower of the hand, which like real, there's some ghosts up there. But while Tyrion says he wants, he thinks he wants to make that happen, instead he says, courage and folly are cousins, but hopefully I'll beat the curse because I'm small. Curse can't get someone as small as I am. Very clever, very funny. Once the council leaves, Circe and him reunite. It's amazing. She chides him for being a big fucking nerd or a small fucking nerd and then they begin to squabble like they often do i i just think circe's a hypocrite here she loves history i know we read her chapters and i was like wait i'm sorry
Starting point is 00:51:31 sircy why do you know so much history you're the nerd this is this is a pot calling the kettle black if you will a little early i love the back and forth they have it cracks me up he goes how I have yearned for the sound of your sweet voice Tyrion sighed to her How I have yearned to have that eunuch's tongue pulled out with hot pincers Circe replied Killer, just fucking killer, Sertie I want to pull that eunuch's tongue out with pincers
Starting point is 00:52:07 Like that's a thing to me when reading this Like Tyrion shows up I get it but she's been like operating Firefighting doing this you know for weeks Like what I see, like I get, you know, obviously what she's really chiding him for, not just being a nerd, but like, let's just fucking get it over with. Why do we have to do the pomp and the whole entire charade over and over again? And she accuses him of forging the letter and she crushes it in her hand declaring she had sent a royal command for her father to come to King's landing. And Tyrion's like, yeah, and our father ignored you.
Starting point is 00:52:43 Which, again, comes back to the riddle that will be posed later on, and the question that happens, even like at the beginning of this chapter, right? Who truly holds power here? Is it the Queen Regent, Circe? Right? Especially after we saw that magnificent display of, like, power and whatnot, politicking she did in the Game of Thrones. Or is it the hand, right? Like, they, even when she and Ned were, you know, going head to head, there was a, there was a, there was a, an, interplay of who has power in this situation.
Starting point is 00:53:17 And it's a question that even goes back to the last time that Tywin was hand, right, for Aries. Yeah. Because Tywin, as many people pointed out, they were like, he's the one truly ruling, not Aries. And I mean, it makes sense that given all this, Taiwan doesn't think he has to abide by royal commands, right? Some of it is, of course, due to gender and Circe's gender, but also, like, come on,
Starting point is 00:53:39 like, let's be real. Like if you, any of you who are parents, I'm not a parent, like, would you like be like, yeah, I'm going to answer my fucking kids royal command. And like, let's also be real, each of us as people who have had, who are a child. Like, how many of us have 100% hit rate of, like, getting your parents to do what you want? Like, none, none, right? And I mean, of course, again, gender does play a role in it as we see what the dynamic is like between Taiwan and Circee.
Starting point is 00:54:10 But, you know, Tyrion points out that, like, Taiwan, Taiwan is not the first one to ignore her command. So that really is part of the whole, the whole picture. Yeah, and I think back to, like, the last queens, right? And, like, Taiwan didn't respect Ralella or Elia. That's true. Right? So he's not going to respect Circe either.
Starting point is 00:54:37 Yeah. I mean, for all we know, he didn't even really respect Joanna that much. We don't really know. Yeah. Inconclusive. Inclusive. Court order. Gavle.
Starting point is 00:54:49 Gabble. She threatens now, after already crushing up the letter, to call this letter a forgery very publicly and throw Tyrion in the dungeons. And he knows she could. He mentions their father's army in passing as a shield. And she says, well, I don't need his help. And he knows. because it's Jamie that she really wants.
Starting point is 00:55:12 His sister fancied herself subtle, but he had grown up with her. How he could read her face like one of his favorite books and what he read now was rage and fear and despair. Hmm. This is... Poor Sarsi. I know.
Starting point is 00:55:30 And Amy, as you pointed out earlier, right, like, it was not a great moment when Tyrion entered the room amongst like his own father's counselors and lords when in a Game of Thrones, right? So this is the second time that we're seeing Tyrion meet a family member. And it is during, I guess, kind of a meeting as well. And like neither of these welcomes are very warm, right? This is just what the Lannisters are like. And reading, reading faces, I did want to call it like, Tyrion.
Starting point is 00:56:07 eh, he's kind of good at, he's not like the best at it, right? But in particular, is he good at learning Circe's face and her expressions and moods out of trauma? She just like slap him a fuck time in this chapter. And, I mean, growing up in the family they grew up in, right, he would be very learned about her emotions and what sends her and also again very sad right like to see where she is like again just to bring it back to surce for a minute because i feel like we're not really talking enough about her like rage fear despair she's cornered she's a lioness in a cage surrounded by these guys right like what she's wanting is she wants jamie to come save her where her daddy never would right she's replaced that with jamie's
Starting point is 00:57:04 love instead, but also like Jamie saving her is also a little off too. So it's like twisted fairy tales. All she has is twisted fairy tales. Yeah. Yeah. No one's, I mean, she's like,
Starting point is 00:57:19 I must be my own knight. Mm-hmm. Well, Tyrion tells Circe, if she supports him, he can work to free Jamie. They have Eddard's daughters, right? Well, half right, half wrong. Right?
Starting point is 00:57:34 Aria has disappeared, likely dead, but Sonsa remains. Tyrion asks for the update on the council politics, and she's like, well, I don't trust anyone, but I need pretty much all of them. He says, Tywin thinks they're false, that Joffrey's reign has already been a parade of follies and disaster, and that someone must be giving Joffrey very bad counsel. Of course, Circe doesn't really love that implication, and she argues, well, he's had no lack of good counsel. he's strong-willed. Yeah, he's a little fucking crazy. And also, Circe, it seems out to me, right,
Starting point is 00:58:11 that she, from the get, go trust no one. She's always done so, right? Like, this isn't new to her character when we meet her in a Feast for Crows. But that's also how their whole family was raised. Trust no one but each other. And even that, they don't fucking trust each other either. Yeah, not one bit.
Starting point is 00:58:25 Yeah. I mean, it's not really a very functional family. No, but I guess some of them are really close, right, like Circy and Jamie. Crowns do queer things to the heads beneath them, we get from Tyrion. He asks Circe was Ned's beheading owed to Jough too in Circey grimaces. Joff was supposed to pardon Eddard, but instead gave the mob a show. The high septing claims they profaned Baylor's sept with their lies in bloodshed. Ooh, tension with the faith.
Starting point is 00:59:02 Yeah, yeah. Already. What could it mean? Already getting set up. And like, so as we've discussed, seriously doesn't have a POV yet. So. Boo. Bo.
Starting point is 00:59:17 Asking Tyrion what she was to do, right? When Joff, like, declared the execution so publicly, like, we get her perspective. She can't go against him and make him look weak as a king in front of everyone. And so through Tyrion's storyline, you're seeing that characterization of Circe. You're seeing this parallel to Catlin Stark's arc as well, right, as she tries to navigate that balance of like, well, I can't really like, you know, tell him to do X thing in front of all of his men. I can't undermine his kingship and having to navigate all that. I also just want to give, like, props. I do think a lot of Tyrion's, like, own dialogue that comes from him.
Starting point is 00:59:57 it's written very fun, very well, like, of how he wins the reader over, because George does a good job of, like, using understatement and sarcasm, because, like, we clearly know what happened, right? And you can read the sarcasm off of what Tyrion's doing. It makes him come off very clever to the reader, and he is meant to be a clever character. But I will also, like, say, on the other hand, though, a lot of this chapter, and a lot of his questions and discussion with Circe, it is literally just meant to bridge the gap. This is the lightning round. This is a lightning round within the book
Starting point is 01:00:32 because of that publication, I think it came out soon enough and also no one expected you weren't necessarily expecting people to have reread a Game of Thrones before coming into Clash of Kings. So it's just a little recap of like, what happened to Eddard? Who made the order? Wait, Sonsa did that. What happened to Bereson? It's just an entire, like, last season on Game of Thrones, but it's a Game of Thrones.
Starting point is 01:00:56 I think that's fair But I also think that it's A little different That like we didn't actually have a POV behind the scenes on the stage That's true Right So I do think that these are kind of small mysteries
Starting point is 01:01:10 For some examples I do think kind of small mysteries Like yes we know what happened to Barriston But we don't know Actually who gave the orders about the uttered thing We do kind of but we don't You know So I think it's good
Starting point is 01:01:25 It's a good clarifying thing Yeah. It sets the stage. Yeah. We're saying the stage here. And if it's important enough to repeat, then it means that it'll mean something later. What it will mean. That's what I'm waiting for.
Starting point is 01:01:38 No, I'm just kidding. George. Unless. Unless the funniest opportunity right now, George, right this moment. Right now. Right. Now. Janos Lent's involvement is explained to Tyrion as well, that Little Fing
Starting point is 01:01:56 made the arrangements to grant Janos Slint Heron Hall and name him to the council as well as provide his gold cloaks to stop Eddard and Reddard had written to Stanis to give him the throne and Ilyn and Janos shortened Ned's head without a single word from Searcy. Of course, the last trick was that Sonsa had revealed the plans of Circe who phrases it as she was wet with love for Joffrey and I'm like, mm, phrasing. And that we have her explaining to Turing, she would have done anything for Joffrey until he cut her father's head off and called it mercy.
Starting point is 01:02:34 That put an end to that. It's fun to consider this from Sansa's angle and also like crazy to think of had Joffrey, you know, empowered his queen. If he had just empowered his queen, what she could have done for him in a lot of ways too, like unlocking the north, right? when you phrase it that way she would have done anything for Joffrey and Joffrey threw that away which is something we've been told in this story is like ah but love
Starting point is 01:03:05 what is greater than love a man is only a man of course soft flash titty bosom a beating heart that's all a man needs you might care about ass if he weren't George but he's a titty guy hard nipples
Starting point is 01:03:23 big thick hard nipples, ah, that's what a man needs in life. Like, many men that are just happy about the size and the color of the nipples that they can squeeze. It comes back at the end of this chapter. The things you were saying. I'm not wrong, right? So it's great, it's great to see that, like, Joffrey is a different man than Tyrion, even, right?
Starting point is 01:03:45 Considering that Tyrion cannot resist that, he is, yeah, Joffrey is a true alpha. But Sons's version of this, you know, she thinks just in her chapter right before this, once she had loved Prince Joffrey with all her heart and admired and trusted his mother, the queen. They had repaid that love and trust with her father's head. Sanzah would never make that mistake again. So it's kind of fun because it's literally basically the same passage. And of course, I find it fascinating that Sertie thinks Sonsa is soft. And Sonsa thinks just the chapter before this watching Janos,
Starting point is 01:04:23 I hope he falls and shames himself, she thought bitterly. I hope Sir Balin kills him. When Joffrey proclaimed her father's death, it had been Janos Slint, who seized, eddard, severed head by the hair and raise it on high for king and crowd to behold, while Sansa wept and screamed. Huh. I don't know if she's as soft as you think, Circe. Circe saying she's wet with love.
Starting point is 01:04:46 Okay, Sansa wasn't drawing with her rose art fucking crayons, fucking pictures of her on a dragon with Joffrey, just saying. Yeah, I mean, she was, but now she has turned from porcelain to ivory to steal. And she is also like, yo, fuck Janoslint. All my homies hate Janoslint. She and tiered and she gets together and be like, yo, we hate Janoslint. And he's like, but she has real reasons to do so. Like, it's so valid for her to hate him.
Starting point is 01:05:16 I mean, good news on that. John killed him. Yeah. So she's got it. You know, her brother-cousin has it. He's on it. Brun. Really just cousin, honestly.
Starting point is 01:05:29 Brusin. I guess they're raised together. Not brusin, I don't know. I don't know how, what's a family like? Who knows? And of course, Berson's dismissal was Jop's way of blaming someone for Robert's death, and it let Jamie become commander of the Kingsguard. He has a seat on the council and lets Joffrey throw him.
Starting point is 01:05:49 bone to his dog. Tyrion argues with her that Barristan was Roberts Kingsguard, one of the only survivors of Aries's Kingsguard, a legend in the small folks' eyes like Sarwin of the Mirror Shield and Eamon the Dragon Knight. What are the people going to think if they see him riding for Stannis or Rob Stark? And he says, I hadn't considered that, but father did, Tyrian says, which is why Tyrion has been sent to put an end to these follies, and bring Joffrey to heed. It does crack me up because, like, Tyrion doesn't actually have a strategy except, well, daddy said.
Starting point is 01:06:28 I mean, it's because he comes in, right? And he does go out in the city and sees how everything is doing. Like, can you truly have a strategy on your first day? I would be, I would be like, what the fuck are you doing? You should learn the ropes, speaking of first day on the shop. You should learn. You should observe in your first, like, 30 days. And then we can work on the execution of a strategy.
Starting point is 01:06:48 I had to present a strategy to the strategy to the job. the entire board, day seven. I had to present a strategy to the board. I don't think that's healthy. But you know what? But you know what? Guess what? I'm almost hitting the numbers I told them I was going to hit. So, suck it.
Starting point is 01:07:02 Tyrion's nowhere. No, I'm just kidding. But he is like everything is like, well, that's what dad said. That's what dad said. My opinion on that guy is what dad said. Like, okay, Kendall. No, for real. I think that's why we liked Kendall's carry.
Starting point is 01:07:17 We're like, this is Tyrion. Yeah, that like one episode when him and his dad are broken up and he's like talking about how it's fractricide from here on out. I'm like, yep, that's Tyrion. Yep. It is, but it is fratricide from here on out. Yeah, quite literally. God bless the United States of Tyrion Lannister.
Starting point is 01:07:37 Cersie says that Joffrey won't bend for Tyrion. And Tyrion's like, oh, I'd bring him to heal using something we call violence, but not real violence, of course, implied violence. And Cersie's like, if you'll be handed him. king, you report to me. You'll be sharing your plans and your intentions before you act, and you will only act with my consent. He lies. He's like, of course, my dear sister, I'm yours. And then he's like, for as long as I need to be. And she's like, what'd you mumble? And he's like, don't worry about it. Tyrion tests Circe's promise of no more secrets. And he's like, so, who killed
Starting point is 01:08:11 John Aaron? And she's like, ugh, I wish it was me. She claims not to know. But Tyrion's like, well, I know about your relationship with Jamie, joking about it until finally she snaps and repeatedly slaps him, which he deserves. Does he? I don't think he deserves it. I really, I'm not sure that he does. I think little brothers should mind their told us about their elder siblings. It is kind of hard, right?
Starting point is 01:08:37 Because I guess, like, that dynamic does make it difficult for them to, like, respect when another's rule. And also, see, I mean, like, also, you know, no more. she's like, fuck if I know. I just do think it's funny that everyone's like, all right, Sircy, so John Aaron,
Starting point is 01:08:53 right? And I feel like if anyone deserves to know who killed John Aaron, it's Searcy, she doesn't know yet. I really hope she finds out by the end of like her storyline because she's taken so many L's for Eliza, like, and her being like,
Starting point is 01:09:07 I know who killed John Aaron, and Cercy's like, do you? And now we know, we're like, she's like, oh, do you? Like, okay, T. But like,
Starting point is 01:09:16 honestly, I think she might respect Liza for it. She might, yeah. As somebody who had to get married to a guy that stank and was on her and fucked her all the time against her will, like, I don't know, good for that. Yeah, I mean, like, Circe had kind of like a very, as we'll see, and as she even says, like, she kind of had a kind of like luck, hands off role in Roberts's demise. Like, she didn't really have that as direct. Liza was direct. She's like, I'm poisoning that man. Liza has big fucking balls.
Starting point is 01:09:51 Yeah, Liza Big Balls, Martin, Aaron. Yeah, Liza Big Balls Martin, Aaron. You were named after some of the bravest people I've ever met. Yeah, I don't know. Also, Tyrion, like, while threatening her with, like, the I know about your relationship, he also was like, okay, well, dad doesn't really know, but he could. But he could It is kind of interesting to me that only now
Starting point is 01:10:17 At the age of like 27 does he Is he like so I know that you and Jamie are fucking I'm like Like every This never came up in like a family argument before When you were like 20 No he saved it for this moment Yeah he saved it for this moment
Starting point is 01:10:32 I feel like I would have said it when I was 16 I mean really he wasn't always there Is what I think we're gonna see Like there's this line coming up So Tyrion warns her I have new friends you won't like And she's like Okay whatever
Starting point is 01:10:43 she stops, she's like, weirdo. He asks how she killed Robert, and she's like, well, Lansil gave him wine that was fortified to three times its normal strength, so like probably normal strength wine for Robert. And she, right before the boar hunt, letting him kill himself. And she remembers how the boar was served afterwards and that it tasted like triumph. Tyrion notes, you know, that's too bad. I kind of liked Robert. I do think it's funny that one line versus, he's like, oh, my God, you would have loved it.
Starting point is 01:11:13 you should have been here. The bore tasted so good. It's like the most dysfunctional reunion. I'm obsessed with it. I really do love it. I love that she just like... You would have loved it. There's behind closed doors they can talk about the death and the murder and the incest and all the fucked up stuff. Love it. I love it. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:11:35 Cersie demands to know how Tyrion's going to free Jamie, but he still needs his plans to get time to ripen. He intends to take a ride through. Kings Landing and take the measure of the city, mostly so he can go see his girl. Before leaving, he tells Circe make sure no harm comes to Sonsa, since we can't afford to lose both Stark daughters. There is this line, yeah, right? Well, I think there's something kind of supporting, almost an inference of some of the stuff we've talked about that, like, Tyrion's visited and stayed for periods of time in Kings Landing,
Starting point is 01:12:08 but he hasn't lived there, lived there, right? He thinks the streets of Kings Landing had always been teeming and rocking. and noisy, but now they reeked of danger in a way that he did not recall from past visits. So, to me that implies he wasn't at court much, not, like, consistently,
Starting point is 01:12:27 not, you know, longer than, like, a trip. Yeah, I mean, I guess someone had to hold shit down a little at Castorley Rock. Yeah, that's where he had his first job. Yeah. Learning about the sewers. It was kind of shitty, but he did it.
Starting point is 01:12:43 Um, yeah, he was, he was, Yeah, that's true. He probably wasn't there much. He didn't spend too much time with his siblings, especially because, like, you know, Circe and Jamie were at court a lot growing up. Jamie, because he got a child labor job, too. I do like this line also of, like, can be like, he basically saw something like schemes or like fruit. They require ripening. And you can really see that George loved that idea. I don't know that he remembered that he wrote this line. I'm not like, not, you know, doubting or discounting his ability. But like, you do see that come up as that sort of
Starting point is 01:13:15 symbolism in the Dornish storyline with the blood oranges, which you've probably heard us talk about it. You've probably heard everyone talk about it, so we'll move on. Eight million times, yeah. Outside. Oh, I like it, though. Yeah, cool. Sick. Outside Tumet was wandering off exploring, Tyrion sends Braun to find him and organize the mountain clans beneath the Tower of the Hand, carefully keeping the rival clans apart. and Tyrion decides to use Searcy's own household guards as his ex-escort, reminding Captain Vilar that their allegiance is to cast really rock rather than to Searcy or Joffrey. And I think that this is a great example again.
Starting point is 01:13:57 We've seen it in a Game of Thrones, but it reminds us that Tyrion does really know his men, the people who follow him, the way that Ned taught John and his other children that they should know their men. and I think it really shows that Tyrion has a good grasp of the cultural and social dynamics between the groups and the clans and it shows leadership that he's able to kind of align them in purpose and keep the peace between all of them, which we of course see John do as well with the free folk. And I think it's part of why Tyrion makes a lot of sense with his storyline becoming part of Danny's team, right? because that is also a group that is made up of several different other cultures and groups. And it's only going to include more as her following grows, right, with the many different, like, you know, Dothraki, like, hordes that may also be rivals.
Starting point is 01:14:53 I do love that. That's, it's great to think of, like, some of Danny's potential commanders or potential, you know, council members, right? Her team of John and Tyrion and the similarities there in the people that follow them and that they've been able to earn that on their own.
Starting point is 01:15:14 Right. I think that's the other important part. Like, Tyrion earned that ally. The veil men, allying to Tyrion, that was earned. True. John just slept his way to the top. That's like the people that followed Danny values. Oh my god. Well, maybe you can sleep your way to the top as a
Starting point is 01:15:32 treat, you know, like, John has been handed some things, but not everything. He wasn't, yeah. Not like Tyrion. Yeah, I know that, I know everyone, like, that's a great, like, area. And then also, I, but he does do it with Danny, arguably, maybe he sleeps his way to the top there, though. Wow. Again.
Starting point is 01:15:49 Again. You need a different, like, promotion strategy. This is becoming a pattern. Yeah. Yeah. This is becoming a pattern, John. Leaving the Red Keep. Tyrion orders the rotting heads be taken down.
Starting point is 01:16:03 and give in to the silent sisters. Vilar hesitates because Joffrey wants them left until the final three spikes can hold Rob, Stanis, and Renley. And Tyrion's like, okay, well, Joffrey's 13, and somebody else can fill those spikes if my order isn't followed. And Vilar's like, okay.
Starting point is 01:16:21 Yeah, it's really interesting to see people following Tyrion's orders here already so immediately, right? Especially because of Varius's riddle later on, including a king, being like telling the Salsword, do this, whatever. Yeah. Tyrion absolutely understands the trappings of power, right? He's like, well, you know what? It's really bad PR to just have the fucking rotting heads on the spikes.
Starting point is 01:16:43 And that for us to not have the other spikes populated, I'm sorry, like, it doesn't set signal strength. It signals we're fucking losing. Yeah. And tyranny. Fear, dread. Yeah. It just shows like we're rotting. And it does make me think of those scenes.
Starting point is 01:17:03 of Otto High Tower and season two of House of the Dragon, you know, trying to clean up after Agan the second and also thinking about all the optics of everything. Yeah, that great fucking speech he goes. Yes. So good. Like the blood, your sister's tears, your child's fucking blood, your mother's tears, like, do you not understand what we did for this? In great.
Starting point is 01:17:31 Yeah, I love that you brought out Otto. I've been thinking about him because I have been thinking like this is a chapter about the hands, right? Like I've been thinking of all the hand jobs. Oh, yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:17:42 Otto, definitely some auto going on here. There's even like, you know, there's a little, uh, nagabarth going on. Interesting. How so? If you will. You know, that Tyrion has all of like the thoughts of like being a good guy and doing some things that help, but also like because he's so wrapped up in the trapping.
Starting point is 01:18:02 because the trappings end up, well, you either get strangled by the trappings or you strangle with the trappings, if you know what I mean. You know, referring to like him strangling Shea with the necklace. Yeah, yeah. The trappings, the literal trappings. No spoilers, no spoilers. But yeah, just thinking of like when you think of like that Barth had all of the tools to be good. Obviously, Allison helped. She helps with everything.
Starting point is 01:18:32 Yeah, turns out it helps some people are aligned, I guess, on the goal. I don't know. Yeah, when you're not working against one another. Yeah. Hell, I think of like Unwin Peak, right? He's a shitty-ass hand. He plotted to like put his daughter. He plotted to be Otto light.
Starting point is 01:18:49 Yeah. He was like, oh, I'm just going to reheat Otto's nachos. Lots to think about. Lots of hands to think of. We'll talk more about some hands. So Tyrion rides through Kings Landing. The city's deteriorating. pretty badly. Corpses in the streets, desperate people selling their belongings, food is scarce,
Starting point is 01:19:08 and roughly three times more expensive, and roasted rats are being sold. Welcome to the world we live in today. The war has cut off food routes from the Riverlands and the Reach. Sersi is focused on prepping for war. Janos has tripled the city watch. Craftsmen are strengthening the walls and producing weapons. The Elchemist's Guild has promised 10,000 jars of wildfire. Tyrion's immediately disturbed by that amount of wildfire, recognizing it could burn the entire city. What does it mean? What does it mean? You know, I think Circe's in a difficult position. She's got a tough job. She's got a lot of like, she's got a lot of, no pun intended, like, fires to put out in the wake of like Robert's death and then Ned's death, right? But you can see that she's really kind of still only thinking about
Starting point is 01:20:00 everything through the lens of violence. We see that happen in her chapters of how she thinks the world is just about physical power over each other, things like that. Physical or sexual, but like still a physical power, right? Like, um,
Starting point is 01:20:15 and we see even her being like, well, Tyrion, you should be out at war, right? It sees like the way she's ingrained this idea of a gender rolled sons should be fighting. And all of her efforts here since everything has happened have only been put towards the different. defense of the city. So again, thinking in terms of violence, martial power. She isn't really,
Starting point is 01:20:36 I think, it sounds like she doesn't really put any efforts towards addressing the food shortages, which is why the Tyrells are so welcomed and beloved. And I mean, sure, it's hard. It's hard with the way that everything's going in the war to, like, get the food. But we don't really hear much about, like, movement to address that issue. Yeah, she's not very strategic. Like, that's That's one way for me to describe CERC. She's not a strategist. She's really not a strategist. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:08 She's very, you know, she's a great firefighter. She's good in the moment. She's not a strategist. She's the type of ruler that in the moment she can pull it together just for optics, but like can she rule long term? And as we come to see, somehow by the hair of her teeth, she does. Yeah, well, I was just like, and then the hair's gone.
Starting point is 01:21:29 then the hair is no longer of her teeth, yeah. Absolutely interesting. Like she does see the world and defense as like that's being safe, right? She sees her father sending troops to kings landing as being safe. She sees a world in which men guard it for her as being safe. That she understands her role is that she will never surpass the man. So in order to win, she must make sure. the man has saved her and that she is number one on the list to not be disposed of, you know?
Starting point is 01:22:05 Yeah. So it's hard when you, to quote some other House the Dragon shenanigans, you know, when you toil in service to men your entire life. How do you get out of that prison? That is the question of Searcy. Well, you don't. Yeah, you let your little brother kill your dad. And. Which should help, like, when you think about it.
Starting point is 01:22:28 feel very conflicted about someone killing your eldest son, who is ungovernable. So Littlefinger, though, is financing the preparations for the war partly through attacks on people entering King's Landing, and Tyrion sees it as clever and cruel, since the refugees fleeing the war are being charged for, quote, safety inside a city facing overcrowding, food shortages, and military preparations. Yeah, you know, taxes aren't popular. No. Are they? No. Not a popular thing, especially when the people are like, hey, where's the money I'm already paying you going? Yeah. And there's not really like, it doesn't feel like there's much opportunity inside the city. there really doesn't seem to be
Starting point is 01:23:29 industry is dead yeah actually it's popping this time of year at the broken anvil tyrian discovers varis sitting with Che and chella Che and chella fuck At the broken anvil Tyrion discovers Vary's sitting with Shea and chella
Starting point is 01:23:46 and immediately understands Vary's has deliberately come to show him She was not successfully hidden and wonders which person in his network gave her away. So as we learned in book five, like I mean, maybe someone told, but like also are like maybe no one because
Starting point is 01:24:02 Farias just like has mutilated children everywhere. And I do think like that is very much part of Varius's power, right? Not only does he know everything. His ability to do so and not actually be dependent on these sources, someone
Starting point is 01:24:18 like divulging secrets, lets him so distrust within those factions. and control things like that because of what he can learn. And thinking about what this means for Tyrion, learning to play the game, like, I think that he, it's possible he sets up like a network or like a Master of Whisper's sort of thing with Denarius as well. I think, like, his network will be made up of the same kind of,
Starting point is 01:24:46 like, I don't think it's going to be made up of also, like, mutilated children, but I do, like, think that he will try and set something up. like that. There's something kind of fun of Vary's and Tyrion and I do think like their paths have to cross again because once more Vary's introduced at the end as an op in some aspects. He's
Starting point is 01:25:05 Tyrion's best friend of him. Right? Not unlike his Ned relationship he was also introduced pretty similar timing to Ned as kind of like am I your friend? Am I your enemy? No one knows Lord Stark. But there's something really between Tyrion and Varius that I expect
Starting point is 01:25:22 them once more to meet, especially on opposite sides of the war. True. Right? Varies for Egan and Tyrion now for Danny. And Tyrion having stirred the pot with Egan, which will come to someday, we'll be great to kind of think about with this, because I do expect them to be on those opposite sides. And in Tyrion's arc, something I'm really liking as we watch this is like he's entering Kings Landing with the people he earned, the veilmen, which are presented to us as like tribal
Starting point is 01:25:53 and in the eyes of the Westerosi looked at as kind of primitive, right? Again, the eyes of the Westerosi, the Westerosi lens of your average Westerosian. So showing up at the beginning of Clash and kind of like starting from scrap with your couple hundred veilmen and learning then how to leverage the schemes
Starting point is 01:26:19 of Kings Landing and the people, so much so that like, by the time storm rolls around and he kills his dad and he kills Shay, it's like he's mastered it all and he's almost bored his last two chapters. He's just like lying in on we. Like all of this is boring. I understand all of these people now. It's like he's speed run being a spy master, right? And now he understands all people in the way they work and their faces, just like he understood Circe before. It's like he's almost bored in a dance with dragons of how easy it is to manipulate gas light and girl boss, you know?
Starting point is 01:26:55 Yeah, that's true. I think it'll get harder for him again. And I do think, like, I forgot. We've discussed this in the past probably many, many years ago. But Tyrion's storyline, right, like, we see a lot of different characters come into certain roles, archetypes, whatever, throughout a song of ice and fire. Tyrion's storyline is watching someone become another player. in the game, like, he's developing in a way that rivals varies and Littlefinger, right?
Starting point is 01:27:29 Each of them had their own goals. Each of them have their own way that they play and move pieces, and Tyrion's learning his own style to do so and is going to play his dragon, right? The person that he's backing, as opposed to the one that Varies is backing or, like, Littlefinger is backing, which is his own whatever thing. So they are the three that are going to kind of like, you know, be doing that. And I guess, I don't know, maybe Davos. Davos is doing something.
Starting point is 01:27:58 But very different. He's playing a very different game. But it's also important. Yeah, he's not, he's in the same basket, but different. He's more on the John's spectrum of political navigation in some aspects. Yeah. Or maybe not Davos, but like Sam actually. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:28:15 Something to think about it. But I do think like it's meant to be like Tyrion. that's his arc. Vary's repeatedly speaks in veiled threats because, you know, let him have some fun. His comments about the eyes carved over the gate of the gods tell Tyrion that Varies knew the moment that they entered the city. And his warnings about dangerous armed men tell Tyrion that if Varies can reach Shea, other people can too. And Varies tells Teryn to take very good care of her. And Tiri responds with his own failed threat that,
Starting point is 01:28:49 Anyone who tries to harm Shay will die. And I'm like, okay, well, this is very interesting. Because as we all know, the one who ultimately hurts Shay the most, and by that I mean murders her, is Tyrion, right? Like, Vary's is, and Vary's actually does play a role in that. He's like, hmm, I don't really know where the ladder goes. That's so interesting. And people speculate kind of gives that nudge to Tyrion of like going things.
Starting point is 01:29:19 They're finding Shea in Taiwan's bed. And so, yeah, there's something... Yeah, Various does unleash the D, you could say. Unleash the T. And... Yeah, maybe, maybe. Yeah, because it is frenemy, right? Like, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:29:38 A good friend, maybe wouldn't have. Wouldn't have... I don't know. I don't know. But it's just... It's just... Because Tyrion's, like, acting, like, all, like, I care about her so much. No one should hurt her.
Starting point is 01:29:47 And I'm like, bro, you killed her. Yeah. And he slaps her. I think it's this book or storm. Yes, he does slap her. He, I mean, he does all of it to himself in his hubris, right? In his pride, what he does, he destroys her. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:30:06 Like, and it's his own fault, all of it, which is not causing any issues for him mentally. And this chapter really already introduces some of these huge changes. challenges in king's landing and immediately puts that dagger at his throat, right? And what does him in is so simple. Like we spoke about. Like, it's love and the lack of love in his life is what does him in a lot of ways. And once more, it is the tragedy of the hand of the king of going into this job thinking you're different. I'm built different.
Starting point is 01:30:42 Like, you have all of these hands going back and back and back. you have, how about Agan IV's hand? How about Lord Lucas Lothston, right? He's the husband of the king's mistress, father to a second of the king's mistress, if rumors can be believed. Agan IV made him hand to the king and then cucked his whole family in front of him. How about Tywin? He was slighted so hard he murdered a bunch of people, right? Owen Meriwether, a brown noser who fucked up his only chance at
Starting point is 01:31:16 and got exiled and stripped of his lands. His grandkid comes back and his wife eats Circe out. So I mean, like, some things are good in this world. You know, some things are still good in this world. So, yeah, only a couple things. We talked about Unwin Peak earlier. Total asshole. Otto Hightower, also kind of an asshole, but good at his job.
Starting point is 01:31:38 And he got killed for it, too. Kristen Cole. I don't have to talk about that dickhead. We all know him. You know, like, these are all... Frigin John Connington, he was held to impossible standards, and he was gay and in love, and he got exiled too. Carlston Chelstead begged Aries not to burn the entire city, and he died for it instead. Rosart, most loyal guy in the universe, died of no importance after trying to help burn the city down.
Starting point is 01:32:06 Ned Stark, he Ned Stark, John Aaron, John Aaron, what will Tyrians end be? How will they finish your story? Do you think you're going to escape the tragic hand? job, Tyrion? I don't know. Makes you think. I mean, he does escape it, but it is still tragic. He lives,
Starting point is 01:32:28 but it is tragic. He still has a chance. No, he still has a chance. Yeah. I mean, he got, like, fired in the worst way that you can really be fired, I guess, though. I mean, he'll be having another opportunity at employment. Oh, that's true. You're right.
Starting point is 01:32:43 No, you're right. The competitor is going to gonna poach him. Hell, he could be up for a couple hand jobs if he played his cards, right? That's true. Yeah, I don't know. I'm like, I know that the show, I don't know if Tyrion's story ends up that way or not. That's one that I'm like unsure of. And I do still like sometimes think about our friend Hamfass, like, Hamfass 42's quiet line theory, as you've all heard me say.
Starting point is 01:33:13 So I don't. Mm-hmm. I don't know. It's anyone's game. But mostly George's, and the ball's in his court. Verius mentions another ball, the Red Comet,
Starting point is 01:33:27 which the people call the Red Messenger and believe heralds a king and warns a fire and blood. Dun-da-da-da, and what could it mean? He then gives Tyrion his riddle three, a king, priest, and rich man each order a self-sword to kill the other two. Shea thinks the rich man survives,
Starting point is 01:33:44 but Tyrion realizes the answer depends on the cell sword, introducing the question of where power actually resides, aka the end of a Game of Thrones. Indeed, indeed. And honestly, like, we're not going to dissect this too much because we will probably bring this up every chapter. So this riddle, though, by Vary's, like, is one of the biggest running themes throughout the books. We've probably talked about it like a million times coming up to this. We'll talk about it more, again, probably every single chapter. And again, like, it's a very well-structured chapter for this one because it starts off with, again, that struggle between Circe, the council, Tyrion, Tywin, from afar. And then also, like, even Joffrey's own rulings, right? That Tyrion is already overturning on his first day here.
Starting point is 01:34:35 You're seeing all those different kinds of trappings of power already playing out. And then, Various's riddle is, I think, even. even what's fun is like this question, it echoes in Jamie's storyline. His lamentations of so many vowels, they make you swear and swear of like, what does it mean to be the person told and ordered, right?
Starting point is 01:34:57 Like they are two, their storylines are kind of two halves of a whole in some ways, Jamie's and Tyrion's. Oh, I love that. Jamie's lamentations also sounds like a great thing. Yeah. Just saying, or album. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:35:12 Yeah. Poor Tyrion. I wonder if the riddle will come back to him in the end, like, during his Adawada. I don't have a... Or his... I mean, T.wowow, not a Dawada. Or during his Adawada, I mean during his dance with dragons, as in The Dance of the Dragons. I feel like he could, like, if he, like, comes up with Vary's face-to-face again. But I think it does come up in Adawada in that it is going to come up in the background. of every single one of his chapters. Yeah, I'm more about the future.
Starting point is 01:35:49 Like I do. Honestly, I'm just thinking of a dull-weta's T-wow in my head for no reason. So it's going great for me. It's going really good. Yeah, the way of the water. Shea teases Tyrion about leaving her behind when he moves into the tower of the hand. And he's like, well, I want you close. But I was explicitly ordered not to bring you to court.
Starting point is 01:36:14 because bringing you into Kingslanding at all is an act of defiance, especially because my new authority derives entirely from my father, who told me I couldn't bring you to court. So jot that one down. After they fuck, Tyrion immediately reminds himself that she's a sex worker, and she loves his money, not him, and he thinks of Tisha. Despite recognizing the danger of repeating that emotional past, he's already becoming attached to Shea.
Starting point is 01:36:42 She asks him what he plans to do now that he's hands. hand. Tyrion says he plans to do something that Circe would never expect. Justice. He thought he ate with that. He really did. And these are the passages that we were talking about where you really see the way George writes with the nipples. And I will end my thoughts on this chapter in passage with, is it justice? Or is it just us? I'm so sick of it. I'm so sick of it. I'm so sick of the shit I put up with. Yeah. What a perfect
Starting point is 01:37:23 stew of a chapter to introduce you to A, everything that is going to be difficult for Tyrion in this book, the politics of it all, the people of it all, and then the thing that does him in in the end of next book, right?
Starting point is 01:37:39 Shea. Yeah. Yeah. Mm. Really worried for that girl. Yeah. No, for real.
Starting point is 01:37:50 I think I'm worried for her. I think someone should be worried for her. But no one's really worried about her, which is like sad in the way that no one's worried about a lot of the girls. Yeah, literally. And Tyrion is... Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye. I can't even get into it today with you about Tyrion, man.
Starting point is 01:38:12 Me at the end of an hour and 50 minute podcast. I can't even get into it with you today about Tyrion, man. It's not going to happen. I just can't do it. But we will. Yeah. We'll come back and do this again next week. I think that's pretty significant.
