The crime scene details in this one are truly bizarre and Lori was absolutely failed for so many reasons. So it is amazing as you guys will see to see her daughter Lauren really taking this investigation

into her own hands after she found some really interesting information about her mom and the case in her own adult life. Yeah, I mean, our hearts really go out to Lauren for everything that she's doing for her mom's legacy. She is working extremely hard, so make sure that you share this episode. Absolutely. I think that's all we got for you today. All right, guys. Yeah, yeah, it's a quick, quick little intro there.

All right, guys. This is episode 390 of Going West, so let's get into it. In March of 1993, a 30-year-old mother was found dead in her apartment under eerie and suspicious circumstances. But after a medical examiner, who would later have his license revoked, ruled her death to be due to natural causes, the homicide investigation halted. Now over 30 years later, her daughter is leading the crusade for truth and justice. This is the story of Lori Lee Malloy. LORI LEE MALLOY Lori Lee Malloy was born on November 30, 1962 in East Providence, Rhode Island, which is just across the Seekonk River from downtown Providence.

Raised by her mother Alice, she also had a sister named Allison, who we're going to talk about a bit throughout this episode. But Alice eventually split from their father and remarried a man named Harry. So it seems Harry was a larger part of Laurie and Allison's upbringing. There's a couple Harrys in this episode and a Henry. We're gonna try our best to separate them. Yeah, it kind of gets a little confusing

throughout the episode. But this is really the only time we mention Harry, the father figure Harry. So that takes away a little bit of confusion later on. But anyway, Laurie grew up as a lover of nature, animals, and the outdoors and was known among her family and friends for being open-minded and a free spirit. She was an avid writer who kept detailed notes in her journals and planners and in high school she was an excellent student and a captain of her cheer team. After graduating from Central Junior High in East Providence, Rhode Island,

Lori really began to crave adventure and exploration. So she set off by herself on a cross country journey, mostly getting around by hitchhiking or riding motorcycles. Lori made it all the way to the farthest end of the West, Alaska, where she learned how to mush or race sled dogs from a winner of the Iditarod Race, which is a long-distance sled dog race held annually in Alaska. Becoming quite skilled at it, she earned herself the nickname Sled Dog or Sleddy for her love of the dogs in the races.

And it was in Alaska that she met up with a man named Jimmy or Pirate, who is the one who gave her the nickname of Sled Dog and who Lori later referred to as the love of her life. Her childhood friend, Louise later said of Lori quote, she did make a mark on the world because of her interaction she had with people. I believe she made me a better person for knowing her. She taught me how to be tough, but willing to forgive graciously,

and how not to back down when you know you're right in your heart. Funny, I never thought about it, but looking back on my life, I see now she had a lot of influence on me to not back down and stand my ground, even in the threat of getting my ass kicked bad. But also, friends of Lori's admit that she struggled intermittently with drug use,

and it affected those around her. She reportedly started using cocaine around the age of 14, which is an allegation that would be used against her a lot later on. So after her travels across the country and in Alaska in the late 1980s back on the East Coast Lori met and fell in love with a man named Harry Mariano Who was often known by the moniker scary Harry and we're gonna pretty much refer to him as scary Harry Again, there's a Henry later on and although those are not the same name just to make it clear We're gonna call him Scary Harry. Yeah, it doesn't really sound like the greatest person to be in a relationship with, Scary

Harry, but his name actually turned out to be eerily prophetic later. So on Valentine's Day of 1988, 25-year-old Lori and her partner Harry got married in an intimate ceremony at her father's house in Derry, New Hampshire, but their newly wedded bliss really did not last long. Just eight months later on October 8th, 1988, Lori called the police to report that she had been beaten by her husband Harry. And this was kind of a boon to local police because Harry had been wanted for charges of driving on a suspended license,

fleeing the scene of an accident, and failure to pay a traffic ticket. So he was arrested on those charges as well as his assault charges against his wife. Now three days later, Harry, who was irate, sent Lori a letter from jail, pleading with her to not testify against him and to just drop the assault charges. He added that it was her choice if they see each other in 6 months or 2 years. Now in his letter he wrote, quote, If you show up and testify against me, I will probably be looking at 1-2 years, which means I'll be getting out in about 18 months. If you don't show up, someone from the public defender's office will come to see you to ask for your intention.

Meaning, are you going to court against me, or just sign a piece of paper for withdrawal of the complaint? It is your choice, see me in about a month or two years. Has to be done. Either I'm in jail or out. It is up to you now and then he signed the letter love your husband Scary man, which is so alarming to me especially because he was scary like he Physically assaulted her so it's like why would you want to go by that if you actually are abusive?

Yeah, exactly. It's like hey, please please don't, please drop these charges against me. Love, scary man. Yeah. So when Lori moved forward with her assault charges against her husband, he seemed to kind of want to take revenge against her, sending her letters that alternated between apologizing and vaguely threatening her.

Then on January 31st of 1990, true to his word, Harry hunted down Laurie and committed felony assault against her yet again. He was charged with a violation of the protective order placed over Laurie in order to have no contact with her after this assault. And although they had been estranged for about a year and a half, 27-year-old Lori filed for divorce on April 20th, 1990. And she's doing some really strong things here to go against him in the first place, despite this letter that he sent her that felt a bit threatening in a way. And then for him to come find her and assault her and for her to still seek a divorce from

him, like that must have been really hard for her to do, but she did it and she got through it. Yeah, I imagine that those threats and everything were really tough, but obviously they just really didn't work out in the end. While her divorce was in progress, Lori started dating a new man named Thomas Kelly. And a few months into their relationship,

Lori excitedly became pregnant with a baby girl. Their daughter, Lauren Lee Kelly, was born on September 15, 1991. And Lori kept meticulous notes on her days, moods, and experiences during her pregnancy. And after the birth of her daughter, she also tracked Lauren's developments as well. Then, less than a year after Lauren's birth, on July 27, 1992, Lori wrote simply, "'Left Tom today.'" Now, Lauren primarily stayed with her mom Lori during her upbringing, but when Lori was working or needed extra coverage,

her mom Alice, her sister sister Allison would step in. But Thomas apparently wasn't ready to relinquish full custody of Lauren so easily. Shortly after the breakup, Lori wrote in her planner as if to reassure herself, quote, Tommy's threats over Lauren will settle soon. In the midst of her breakup with Thomas and raising her daughter on her own,

Lori was still navigating a very messy divorce with Scary Harry. But on December 28, 1992, she wrote that she had finally been granted the divorce, which was no doubt a big relief for her. Thus, the beginning of 1993 appeared to be a hopeful new start for Laurie, with her divorce almost over. She jotted in her planner her goals for that coming year, which were divorce, license, car, get body in shape, buy house. But also wrote down a note to change her daughter's surname from Kelly to Malloy, which again is Laurie's maiden name.

In March of 1993, planning ahead, she wrote excitedly, divorce final. So that was upcoming in her calendar before her death. In the early days of March, Lori's friends and family noticed a change in her demeanor. Now this seemed to be kind of a natural side effect of the life changes that she was navigating at the time, but still it was kind of concerning.

So Lori had started seeing a man named Henry Costa, who was a bit older than her and by Lori's own account, a kind and generous man, which would have been very refreshing after her first two relationships. And the two had actually known each other for years at that point, but had never dated seriously. So after they finally started seeing each other,

Henry began referring to Lori as his girlfriend. According to Henry, the two met during their treatment at the Institute for Mental Health in nearby Cranston, Rhode Island. He claimed they both suffered from intermittent mental health and substance abuse issues, alcohol being his vice of choice. He claimed that Lori suffered from schizophrenia and that she was seeking treatment for it at the center in Cranston where they met.

And when they met, that's why she was there. Henry later told investigators that in the weeks leading up to her mysterious death, she had started using cocaine again, and had also started dabbling in sex work to make money to support her cocaine habit. However, none of these claims about Lori seem to have been definitively proven by either investigators or her family, nor have they been concretely connected to her very suspicious death. So, Laurie and Henry had recently gotten into an argument over her alleged cocaine use and sex work, with Henry claiming that he was concerned about her well-being. The last time he saw Laurie was on Monday, March 1, 1993, when he stopped by her apartment to bring

her cigarettes. Henry said that Laurie had been difficult to get a hold of in the days and even weeks leading up to her disappearance and starting at the end of February of 1993 Laurie had been battling with what she described as a flu like illness that she had been seeing a doctor for so Laurie's mom and sister were at this point taking care of Lauren while she was under the weather So Lori's mom and sister were at this point taking care of Lauren while she was under the weather More than one of Lori's friends recalls speaking on the phone with her during this time and that her state of mind was a bit concerning She had apparently been slurring her words and said that she had taken some pills But that she didn't know what they were though. These may have been for her illness and not for recreational purposes.

So Allison last spoke to her sister on the phone on Tuesday, March 2nd, 1993. And after that, Lori just stopped picking up the phone, and knocks on her door went unanswered. Both her sister Allison and boyfriend Henry continued to check in on her, hearing nothing back. Then on March 6th, 1993, the day before she was found dead, Thomas Kelly filed for sole custody of their daughter Lauren, which is kind of odd timing, you know, it really seemed, because, you know, this is the day before she would be found deceased. Yeah, it was like either a really weird coincidence,

or when you look back at everything, that's kind of interesting. It is, yeah. So in his petition, he alleged that he believed that Lauren was being mistreated by her grandma, Alice, as well as Lori's soon-to-be ex-husband, Harry Mariano. Now that same night, so Lori's last night alive, while Allison was watching her daughter, Lauren,

Lori supposedly hosted a couple of guests at her home. Darren, her alleged cocaine dealer, and his wife, who were likely two of the last people to see her alive. Now, Darren claimed that the three of them were using cocaine together, and that Lori mentioned having a guy come over later, though the circumstances of this affair, as well as his identity, were

unknown. Was it her boyfriend Henry, or was it somebody else? And by the way, it's worth noting that Darren was under investigation for manslaughter during this time, because he had struck and killed a man while driving under the influence of alcohol. Now the following day, Sunday, March 7, 1993, Henry again spoke with Laurie's sister, Allison, urging her to check on Laurie since neither of them had spoken to her or seen her in a few days.

Now, when neither of them could reach her still, Henry stopped by the apartment, and when he arrived, he found the front door to her apartment not only unlocked, but open, noting later that he did not have a key. So stepping inside cautiously, Henry could hear water running and saw what he thought resembled signs of a struggle. Fearful of what he might find, he turned right back around and headed back outside, calling the East Providence Police to get help.

So the officers who received him at the station claimed that he was in shock and appeared very distraught by what he had come across. Henry brought them to Lori's apartment on North Hole Street and entered through the open front door. That's where they discovered Lori, naked, deceased, and lying on the floor in the threshold of the bathroom door and Surrounding her was a scene that was not only eerie, but it was also just really confusing Yeah, it really is because tufts of dark hair which appeared to be Laurie's were scattered all over

the apartment Here was also found between the toes of her left foot Hair was also found between the toes of her left foot, inside her right hand, and wrapped around one of her wrists so tightly that the medical examiner later described it as a bracelet. The running water was coming from the bathroom faucet near where Lori was found, and slices of bread surrounded her on the bathroom floor. She had bruises dotting her body on her upper right arm as well as both thighs. In the bedroom was a bathroom towel covered in mucus and near the front door was a running shoe with a baby sock and a clump of hair

that did not belong to Lori because it was light brown in color and Lori had really dark brown hair. So there's like clumps of hair in all these really weird places, like everything, like this must have been such a strange scene to come across. There's bread on the floor,

there's a baby sock and a running shoe, like so many weird things all over the place. So the police report noted that it looked as if the the hair that was found in the running shoe had been ripped from someone's head. So many have questioned if the hair belonged to her daughter Lauren but Lauren herself definitely does not believe so because hers was super dark like her mom's and it was a very short at the time because she was only 18 months old. None of this hair was ever tested and it's unclear if it's still in police possession or not,

so the identity of the person or people who was missing all that hair is still unknown. On the coffee table were two empty drinking glasses and a plate of unfinished salad had been left out as well. The fridge, though it was stocked, was, for whatever reason, unplugged. The glasses, hair samples, towel, some baby clothes belonging to Lauren, and even the sheets from Lori's bed were all collected and taken into evidence. Police immediately sealed off the scene, calling Lori's death a homicide. Now when police spoke with Allison, again Lori's sister, she echoed Henry's statements that Lori had been treated for mental health

struggles and that she had been working through addiction issues. But Lauren later noted, quote, Allison did not tell detectives about her own substance abuse struggles, constant infidelity issues, financial struggles, or how she was known for hating her sister. She never said where she was when Henry returned from Laurie's to speak with her and got her boyfriend instead. No one knew that she'd eventually use her sister's death benefits on her habits instead of her sister's daughter's care, or that she'd bribe one of her boyfriends to do something

that could send him to jail and never speak to him again. Because on that one day in March, Allison wasn't the bad sister for once. She was the babysitter, the solid one, the person people went to for answers, and she would tell detectives everything that she thought they wanted to know. On March 8, 1993, Laurie's body was brought in for an autopsy, performed by medical examiner F. John Krolikowski. But disturbingly, Laurie's loved ones would later learn that the medical examiner who went by John was only practicing in Rhode Island because he had lost his license in

Massachusetts and was still under investigation for it. Thus, several curious details revealed themselves in the examination. Lori's lungs were twice the weight that they should have been, and there was residual vomit found inside of them. There was nothing found inside her system except liquid, making it even more curious that she had been surrounded by bread. Swabs for sexual assault were taken, but they were never tested, so it's unclear if she was assaulted before her death. Now, according to John's findings, Lori had been on the floor, unconscious, but still alive, for a few hours before her death.

And sadly, she had apparently only been dead for about an hour before she was found. Which was a particularly strange detail, because if she had only been dead for about an hour, why had she gone off the grid for days prior? Under case summary, John wrote, quote, Found by police naked and dead on bathroom floor. Known cocaine user. Under both suspected cause of death and final cause of death, the report read, quote, pending. Her age was also listed incorrectly, but due to the fact that she had previously been engaged

in drug use and that she was otherwise healthy, John ruled that Lori had died of a heart condition, claiming that her real cause of death was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a condition where the left ventricle of the heart becomes stiff and swollen and with that Laurie Malloy's case was closed by the East Providence Police Department on March 31st

1993 just three weeks after her death Laurie's divorce to scary Harry was finalized. Initially after Lori's death, her 18-month-old daughter Lauren's time was split between her grandma, her aunt, and her father Thomas. But the legal custody battle waged for years after her mom's death. Because it was already a pretty complex situation. Like technically, Scary Harry was listed on Lauren's birth certificate as he and Laurie had still been legally married at the time. So Lauren's grandma Alice attempted to keep Lauren away from her birth father Thomas after

he filed for custody. But Alice was battling terminal cancer at the time, so Allison and her boyfriend Richard Duarte took over, filing for full custody. On December 23, 1996, their petition was granted, and Lauren was officially adopted, meaning both Thomas and Scary Harry were barred from visitation with Lauren. She was granted a safe childhood away from the men who were trying to gain access to her, but the tumultuousness in her family continued long after her mom's tragic and very confusing death. That same year, Alice passed away following a battle with cancer, and then Allison and

Richard broke up after Allison was caught cheating on him. But he claims they got back together because he worried about her instability, and he also wanted to make sure that he was present to care for Lauren. Which was good because according to Lauren, she and Allison never enjoyed a particularly loving or stable relationship, but she and Richard, who she refers to as dad, were very close. Like she called him her best friend. Time continued to pass with no answers in Laurie's case because again, they closed it and then suddenly

30 years had gone by. Lauren grew up hearing from her family that her mom had died from a rare heart condition, not from a mysterious murder as was originally believed by police. Then on June 28, 2020, Lauren received a Facebook message from someone named Louise. It read, quote, Is this Lauren Lee Malloy? Your mom was Lori Malloy? You have an Auntie Allison from East Providence, Rhode Island? So obviously without like any further context Lauren was a little bit wary to engage with this woman

But Louise then claimed that she was one of Lori's best friends from middle school until her death She continued to send messages and even pictures to Lauren asking if they could talk on the phone He continued to send messages and even pictures to Lauren, asking if they could talk on the phone. And when they did, Louise had dozens of stories and memories about her mom that Lauren had never heard before. She told Lauren, quote, she was a very cool, strong, beautiful woman. Be proud to call her mom. She also claimed that she had theories and insider information that Lauren had been shielded from for the past three decades.

Louise said that she knew an officer who had been on the investigative team of Laurie's death. Now, this officer apparently said that they knew that there had been someone else present in Laurie's apartment that night because the door had been left open, appearing as if someone had fled the scene in a rush after Lori had collapsed. Louise claimed that she believed it had been an accidental overdose, and that Lori had been seeing a guy named Peter, unbeknownst to her boyfriend Henry, who had been present at the time of her death. Now, this was all news to Lauren, who claimed that she had never really questioned the story that she had been given by her family.

She recalled, quote, It bothered me that nobody cared about her case when she died. Despite later hearing that we all knew that she was murdered from relatives, nobody ever voiced their suspicions in 1993. My mom's case and duffel bag of notes sat damned and forgotten until someone came forward to me in 2020. And we're going to get into the details of that duffel bag here in a second. Yeah, so slowly Lauren began compiling information and conducting her own investigation. And ironically, the more she learned about her mother's case, the more she was told

not to trust Louise. And the two eventually fell out of touch. Sadly, Lauren lost her dad unexpectedly in March of 2019 following a heart attack, meaning that she was made the sole beneficiary of her dad's estate, and was tasked with cleaning out and selling his house. At that time, Allison was living there, staying on his couch while between residences, but she was eventually forced to evict her aunt Allison in order to be

able to sell the house, so she was like, get out of here, Allison. So after she did, she cleaned out her dad's basement, and it was there that she found years of notes that her mom had made, some of which were written for Lauren herself. Opening up an old duffel bag of her mom's, she found planners from the last three years of her life, as well as a notebook and multiple photo albums.

So of course, Lauren poured over the notes that her mom had kept of her days over the final few years of her life and found them to be rife with information and potentially clues. In August of 2020, Lauren brought what she had back to the East Providence Police Department, as well as the Attorney General's office and the Rhode Island Medical Examiner. A few months later, by February of 2021, Lauren had secured a copy of her mom's autopsy report and was completely horrified with the inconsistencies and discrepancies, as well as the reputation of the doctor who had performed it. Remember that guy John that we

talked about? So she challenged the original autopsy findings with the Rhode Island Department of Health and anxiously awaited the case being looked at with fresh eyes. In March of that year, so again 2021, the new medical examiner handling Laurie's case agreed with Lauren's findings that foul play should have been strongly suspected and concluded that Laurie's body should be exhumed. He officially refuted the findings from the original autopsy performed in 1993, and thankfully, Laurie's case file hadn't been completely discarded, and some items from the scene were still able to be tested,

though the findings from these investigative efforts have not yet been shared. Thanks to a very helpful tip from another child of a murder victim, Lauren was able to find a medical examiner in New York City who could take another look at Laurie's case, despite the attorney general's disinterest in doing so. The independent forensic pathologist confirmed that her supposed cause of death was not supported by the original finding of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, but that the swelling of her lungs didn't have a logical explanation, and finally, that the cause of death should be re-investigated

by police. On February 1, 2023, Lori's body was exhumed for further testing. And since that was only about 13 months from when we're recording this right now, Lauren is still waiting for developments, but has been relentless in her quest for justice, doing much of the legwork on her own like we discussed in the intro of this episode. But according to an update that Lauren made in January of 2024, so a couple months ago, the Attorney General's office confirmed with Lauren that they had results from the examination following the exhumation of her mom's body. They claimed they were holding on to their findings

until further notice, just pending more investigation with a private laboratory, and they were unwilling to divulge the findings, even to Lauren. After applying a little bit of pressure, Lauren announced that she was able to secure a private meeting with them, but the outcome of that meeting

has not yet been made public by either Lauren, law enforcement, but the outcome of that meeting has not yet been made public by either Lauren, law enforcement, or the media. So it could actually be relatively soon that some answers come to the case, I mean, depending on what they found. Yeah, exactly. And hopefully they did find something, but until a proper investigation is performed or investigators' findings have been revealed, we're basically just left wondering what became of Lori on that Sunday 31 years ago.

Now, based on her toxicology report, it seemed as if she hadn't been taking the medication for her mental health at that time, if she was in fact diagnosed with a mental health affliction and placed on medication for it. The possibility remains of an accidental overdose, whether or not someone else was present in the home at the time, though it seems most likely that somebody was. But Laurie's clean toxicology report calls that theory into major question. Because cocaine and many other drugs stay in your system usually for at least a couple days.

Now, the strange detail of the bread surrounding her body has also led to many lingering questions. For why the faucet had been left running, Lawrence says that she believes that the other person with Lori in the apartment at the time washed their hands and fled, avoiding touching the faucet so as to not leave any further evidence. And on top of all of this, frustratingly, the East Providence Police Department failed to interview any of the men that were involved with Lori. There was Henry, who seemed like an earnest boyfriend who wanted the best for her, but they had reportedly gotten into a fight during their last encounter over Lori's alleged

cocaine use and potential sex work. So did this lead to a fatal argument? Lauren believes that this is pretty unlikely, claiming that she does not believe that he was involved at all. And from what her mom wrote about him, Henry seemed to be very kind to her and they found comfort and companionship with each other. The other two men in her life, however, did not hold such good reputations. Harry and Thomas both had reasons to seek revenge on Lori, believing her to be the one that got away.

But by now, all three men have since passed away. Lauren spoke with Henry's daughter about him after his passing, and Henry spoke very highly of Laurie for the rest of his life. Scary Harry, or Harry Mariano, was found dead on July 5, 2003 on a park bench in Rhode Island. The circumstances were strange, but foul play was apparently ruled out. Lauren's birth father Thomas died in a car accident on June 8, 2009. She had finally tracked him down one year later, and although it was too late to reconnect with him, she was able to convene with her half-siblings. So Thomas' other children, and now maintains a relationship with them. Of Thomas' complicated past, Lauren took to Twitter to write, quote,

"...he had an extensive criminal record and alleged sexual abuse toward at least one of his children, per the Department of Children, Youth, and Families records. I cannot speak to if he may have had any involvement in my mom's case, but at least one person I've spoke with extensively advised that he had a habit of picking up sex workers and some dark sexual habits of his own. I uploaded my own DNA to Authram Tech's database in 2021 so that if Tom ever did play a role in anyone's death,
