Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to an Airwave Media podcast. Hello, wonderful wanders in Wonderland, wondering about Wanda vision. Welcome to Good Job Brain, your weekly quiz show and offbeat trivia podcast. This is episode 280. And of course, I'm your humble host, Karen, and We are your buckos and buckaroos buckling under buckets of bucky balls. I'm Colin. And I'm Chris. Oh, man, I used to love bucky balls.
Starting point is 00:00:40 And then it turned out that they would kill you. Yeah. Well, I mean, only in certain circumstances. My issue with it was, it's not that I thought that I was going to swallow them and die. It's that I used them as a fidget toy. They were so great, but they started falling apart on me. And then I had like little pieces of metal all over me. And you don't want that.
Starting point is 00:01:00 so they weren't they they weren't a great fidget toy unfortunately didn't not hold up to repeated stress but those things were cool now i have kids so i can't have them because again you swallow one bucky ball fine swallowed two bucky balls dead two plus bucky balls well i mean you only need two you only need two for one to get in one part of your intestine and the other to get in the other part of your intestine and then for them to attach themselves together they're on the market i thought they took them off They did, but I think that maybe they're safer now or something. I don't know. So you're saying they lose their polarity. They lost their, um... They kind of degrade physically. Like the coating comes off, right?
Starting point is 00:01:42 Like they kind of crumble. I assume that's what you mean, Chris, right? Yeah, because it's like there's rare earth magnets inside of them. But then there's like the metallic, you know, sort of the metal. It would just kind of fall apart and it was like, eh, yeah. But no, I guess they're, I guess they're back. I guess you're right. I guess they're back.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Yeah, I see. Yeah, I don't know what changes they've made. Right. Better lawyers. That's funny. You know, one of the funniest things, there's this one episode with a Tyler C.L quiz where it's like two words. The first word starts to see. The second word starts to start to CL.
Starting point is 00:02:16 I remember that one. It was Witter Shins. The clue was Witter Shins. It's counterclockwise. And then I was like, what's clockwise? And Chris goes, without urchins. And then nobody heard it. Nobody said.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Yeah, yeah, I know. I know. Every now and again, I will say something and either nobody will hear, but I'll think to myself, well, when Karen edits this. Yeah. It's like it's an Easter egg. No one reacted. Oh, my gosh. Okay. All right. It's time. It's time for our corrections, omissions. Errors. A segment. Our errors that we have to address. So may I present to you this season's first. Um, actually. Um, actually. What you said just wasn't true. Um, actually.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Do you mind if I correct you? Because actually, factually, and quite enthusiastically, I was right, and you were wrong. That's exactly what inspired me to write this um, actually. You were wrong Okay, so this is from Joseph and Heather Colin, you had a quiz
Starting point is 00:03:37 earlier this season and it was Did you ever notice? It was that quiz Okay, yeah, yeah You ask questions about if we notice Details on things that we see all the time Everyday things.
Starting point is 00:03:50 One of the questions you asked about the Safari logo We're on our iPhones all the time We pull up our browser, it's safari. We stare at it every day. And your question was, it's a compass. What direction is the red part of the compass needle pointing at? Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:09 And both me and Chris, we both thought it was slanted, and I said, oh, it's pointing, I guess, north east. It's pointing to the northeast, right. This is from Joseph. He says, the red arrow on a compass is the direction of north. Right. That is true. It's got me there. That's true.
Starting point is 00:04:26 It is, if the compass is working correctly, that, that red arrow is pointing toward north. You're right. That is a good call. I did not phrase that question very well. And if you're holding, and if you're holding a compass in front of you, and if you see, if you see that, if it looks like that, it means that you are facing northwest. Yes. Yes. Like, we understood the spirit of the question.
Starting point is 00:04:51 Yeah. You weren't, you weren't trying to trick us. No, but you've made me, you've made me realize that's a great. Great, like, dad trick question. Like, we may have reverse engineered one of those. Joseph said maybe the more technically correct way of describing or asking that question is, like, right or left. Mm-hmm. Like on a clock, what time would it be pointing to?
Starting point is 00:05:12 Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's good, too. Tushay. Tushay. I literally just finished reading a book about the history of the compass, and I didn't even, it didn't even occur to me. Like for fun? Yeah, just for fun. That's pretty nerdy. Sure is.
Starting point is 00:05:29 Welcome to the show. Yeah. All right. Well, without further ado, let's jump into our first general trivia segment, pop quiz, hot shot. Here I have a random trivial pursuit card and some other game cards, but let me just pick one here. All right. You guys have your barnyard buzzers ready. Listeners join in.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Answer some questions. Here we go. Blue Edge for Geography. oh, okay, this is multiple choice but I'm not going to give you the multiple choice first. Okay. What is Mount Midoriama? Oh, I mean, okay.
Starting point is 00:06:06 Okay, well, it's in Japan. Yes. Or unless it was named, unless it was somewhere else, but it was named by Japanese. Ah. It means, it means green mountain. Okay. So it is a brand of coffee.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Oh, that's pretty good. Yeah, yeah. Okay. Is it, is it, is it, oh, okay, all right. Well, we'll get it for sure with the choices. Is it a Japanese volcano, a rare sushi dish, for an American Ninja Warrior obstacle course? Well, here's the thing. It could be any of those things.
Starting point is 00:06:39 It's definitely not the sushi dish. It might be an American Ninja Warrior obstacle course, but I'm going to have to go with the Joe Blogs answer here and say that it's a Japanese volcano. I would feel really silly if I, if I overruled. Something other than that, yes. Oh, I knew this one because I watched it. It's the American Ninja Warrior obstacle course. It is a little weird because I've never heard of that mountain before. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Next question. Pink Wedge Pop Culture. In which TV, Who Done It are the characters, Aria, Emily, Hannah, and Spencer tormented by the mysterious A. Oh, I know this one. Interesting. I do not know this one. Is this a, it's just like, this has like a very, like, 90s show vibe to the description. Uh, it's more 2000s, a little CW kind of action.
Starting point is 00:07:34 In which TV, whodunit are the characters, A. Emily, Hannah, and Spencer, tormented by the mysterious A. It is pretty little liars. Oh, okay. Okay, I've heard of that. Heard of the show. I have, I have heard of that. Okay.
Starting point is 00:07:53 All right, Yellow Wedge, which U.S. president in 1966 declared Father's Day a national holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday in June. Okay, what? Okay, all right. Okay, Colin, you know. I'm just going, I mean, 1966, that would be LBJ, right, Lyndon Bange Johnson? On the card, it just says Lyndon Johnson. Okay, yes, yeah. Oh, Lyndon Johnson. Can you clarify? You know what this happened before, too? Like another Lyndon, that was the answer, but they didn't. put the B in it. Purple Wedge, which of Truman Capote's works shares a name with a
Starting point is 00:08:31 1995 hit song by Deep Blue Something. Oh! I know. Say it again. I was just going to look back in cold blood. The Deep Blue Something rock pop song was not in cold blood.
Starting point is 00:08:48 Oh, God. Was this a TV? Was the TV show theme song? uh or no it's like it's like a radio hit it's a radio it was a hit it was a hit i do not know the name of their song blue something oh man i said what about oh breakfast at tiffany's of course of course yep should have how quickly we forgot about deep blue something and breakfast at tiffany's green wedge what behavior do cats engage in that may promote he even while resting.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Oh, oh, okay. I don't know, Colin, cat person? That is purring. Oh, yes, you are correct. Purring, it says the rhythmic sounds occur at a frequency that encourages bone growth and tissue regeneration. I've read this before, I have, in cat books over the years, yeah, that they... It only works on cats.
Starting point is 00:09:51 Right. I guess it's true. they couldn't put it on the card if it weren't true here you know some human is like we got to get a grant to do the scientific research and let's try to like promote human healing with purring sounds and they just blast patients with cats just cover the patients in cats the ones survived yeah the strongest survives last question here orange wedge what is the most popular league in the world's most popular sport Oh, I didn't see the answer. Let's reason it out. Oh, all right. Well, everybody got to answer. Chris.
Starting point is 00:10:29 Okay. I was going to say FIFA. That's the association. I like how you're thinking, though, Chris. I was also going to guess most popular sport would be. Premier. Yeah, like, I was going to say the English Premier League in. Oh, or could it be Spain?
Starting point is 00:10:46 It could. It could. It could. All right. Here we go. It is the English Premier League. Yay, throw us. Half a point for me.
Starting point is 00:10:55 Half a point for me. Put that down. Got the score right. That's the scorekeeper, please. Got a piece of terminology, correct. Woo. Now, time for something a little different. I have these cards, game cards, from a who am I game?
Starting point is 00:11:10 Oh. Who am I game? Okay, okay. We've done quizzes ourselves. It's kind of structured this way where you're guessing a person. I'm going to give you, I'm going to give you facts about a famous person. and they start kind of more obscure and then they kind of get more and more specific as I go.
Starting point is 00:11:28 So I guess the goal is to try to guess this person in the fewest clues as possible. Does that make sense? Yes. Oh, yeah, yeah. Let's try this. This is the Who Am I game that I picked up at a buy nothing group.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Nice. So buzz in when you feel like you have a guess. Who am I? First clue. I am an American actress and singer born in California. Any guesses? Too broad? Lindsay Lohan.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Second fact about this person. I am allergic to wheat gluten. Come on. Come on. All right. The defining, okay. Act, actor, singer, allergic to gluten. Born California.
Starting point is 00:12:16 Born California. Actress, so we know it's a her. Yes, yes. Okay. Next clue. My older sister starred in crime drama Bones. Oh. Colin, who am I? You, Karen, are Zoe Deschanel.
Starting point is 00:12:35 Correct. You can't see me, but my eyes are big right now. Get the dough-eyed Zoe look. Yes, it is Zoe DeChernelle. Her sister, Emily Deschanel is in Bones. The next clues are. You really are unrecognizable without your bang. the next clues are i started with joseph gordon levitt in 500 days of summer and then the last clue is i am
Starting point is 00:12:58 i played jess day in the sitcom new girl okay okay okay okay okay one more let's do one more who am i i am an american inventor narrow's the pool no guesses thomas addison second clue my middle names are finley and breese F.B. Third clue. The slow speed of mail about my wife's death motivated my invention. Wow, okay. The slow speed of mail about my wife's death motivated my invention.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Okay. American inventor. Okay. Something that speeds up the male. Speeds up the male. All right. About my wife's death, okay Okay, second, penultimate clue
Starting point is 00:13:55 The first official message sent in my code Was what hath God Okay, all right. Chris Samuel F.B. Morse. Samuel Finley, Breeze. I actually heard that Samuel F.B. As soon as you said it, it flashed in my brain,
Starting point is 00:14:16 I've heard that too, yeah, yeah. And last clue, the code I famously created is made up of dots and dashes. Good job. All right, good job, brains. All right, this week. Well, long-time listeners know that in a regular episode, we usually have a topic.
Starting point is 00:14:33 Every fifth episode, that's all out the door. We've all prepared quizzes to stump each other and stump you guys' listeners. So today is our all-quiz bonanza number 56. Well, I can't stop writing cryptic clues. We've done them in the past episodes. I was writing my quiz for this episode, and my mind wandered, and I thought of another cryptic crossword clue that I'm going to share with everybody right now.
Starting point is 00:15:07 In case you're just tuning in, cryptic crossword clues, they're like crossword puzzle clues, except for they're divided into a straightforward definition of the word that we're looking for, and then also some sort of wordplay definition. of that word. Go back and listen to the few previous episodes and you get some tips as to how to solve these. People seem to like them. So we're in our cryptic era. In our cryptic era. So I'm going to read this out. I'm going to share this with Colin and with Karen. Feel free to write it down if you want to try to solve it and maybe pause the episode or try to
Starting point is 00:15:40 solve it in real time along with us. Here is this episode's cryptic. Guy who usually returns on a Friday is returning the firsts of November, October, September, August, and January, and the enumeration is five. Okay. I'll read it again. I'll read it again. Guy who usually returns on a Friday is returning the firsts of November, October, September, August, and January. And the enumeration is five. Okay. Okay. So the first of those months, the first letter of November October, September, August, January, spells Jason backwards. It does. Guy who returns on a Friday, Friday the 13th, Jason, the notorious killer from
Starting point is 00:16:33 from most, most, if not all of the Friday the 13th movies, starting with number two. Yeah. Yeah, so the straightforward part of the definition here is guy who usually returns on a Friday. that is, is just the connector word that joins up the straightforward definition with the wordplay definition. And the wordplay definition is returning the firsts of November, October, September, August, and January. Now, this is two things going on here. One, you have an initialism or an initialization where when you see something like the first of September is probably S, you know, September initially, you know, something like that. And then, of course, returning is the key.
Starting point is 00:17:16 keyword that is letting us know that we're going to take this and we're going to we're going to turn it around it's going to go that's a good one i kind of think in three parts one is what is the wordplay indicator like what is the surgery we have to do what is the action and then what and then what do we have to do it too yes and then what is the answer validation uh part of it what's the yeah the check so we know we got it it's almost like the proof too yeah yeah yeah yeah if you're doing a regular crossword it's like well i'm pretty sure this is the answer i don't know let me pencil it in real light but with a cryptic it's like oh yeah it's like if both of them match up it's like you can pretty sure that you know that that's the that's the answer you can feel free to confidently
Starting point is 00:17:55 write it down and pen oh good job good job guys all right i have a quiz it's kind of silly and it's kind of random and it's uh we'll see how it goes we'll see how it goes the title of this quiz is i'm looking for a theme i like it i have two sets of four four questions and there is a hidden theme you'll see what i mean as we go through so it's a buzzin quiz i'm going to first ask you four questions and then see if you can send a theme if you got it tell me but don't reveal what the theme is maybe you guys won't get the theme and that's okay maybe some listeners will get it so first set of four questions here we go all right question number one buzzin with the right answer
Starting point is 00:18:43 uh stock exchange NASDAQ was founded in 1971 and is based in New York City what does NASDAQ stand for we see it we say it all the time Colin Buzzin I man I looked this one up for a quiz many years ago I believe it is the
Starting point is 00:19:05 National Association of Securities Dealers automated quotation. Oh my God. Wow. Yes. Yes. Good job brain.
Starting point is 00:19:20 I like how you only know it because you made this into a question before. Because I turned it into a question once or yep, yep. NASDAQ, National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations. There we go. Question number two of the first set. What is ultimately the main difference between an estate and a trust fund? We usually, you know, we talk about like, oh, the state of Prince, the state of Tolkien or the state of Elvis Presley. What is the difference between an estate and a trust fund, ultimately the main difference?
Starting point is 00:20:05 the estate is like all of the assets of of like one person and a trust fund is like a certain type of account that you set up to deposit assets into that are trust fund is set up to go to somebody at a certain time right or accessible by certain people only what is ultimately the main difference between let's say the gates trust fund and elvis's estate uh The trust fund has to be set up when the person is living and the estate is after the person has deceased. Estate is for a person. That's what's left after you die, basically? Yeah, after they pass away. And the estate is a one-time transfer of assets after death,
Starting point is 00:20:56 while a trust fund allows for ongoing accumulation. All right. Here we go. Third question of the first set. In 2019, what branch of the U.S. military scrapped height restrictions for recruits in order to attract a bigger and more diverse pool of people? Colin. The Army. Incorrect.
Starting point is 00:21:24 Chris. The Marines. Incorrect. The answer is Colin. There's only so many of them. The Navy. Incorrect. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:21:37 All right, Chris. Take it on home. Hey, there could be Coast Guard, National Reserve. Yeah, yeah, fair. It is the Air Force. Here, Major General Craig Willis, we have an incredibly thorough process for determining whether you can safely operate an assigned aircraft. High restrictions are an operational limitation, not a medical one.
Starting point is 00:21:59 So the majority of the aircrafts can accommodate pilots from across the spectrum of heights. That is interesting. I didn't, I didn't really think about that. But yeah, it's, it's maybe the branch of the force is, yeah, that is most tied to, right, physical constraints of vehicles. Part of it is because a lot of people are like, whoa, okay, well, I'm not going to even try to apply. The actual, the range was 5-4 to 6-5. Interesting. And if you were below that or above that, previously. You can still apply. You have to have a special waiver or a special permission to apply. This turned off a lot of women from applying, but they want people to apply and then be like, hey, we'll assign you accordingly. I had a friend in high school who wanted to be an Air Force pilot and found out that he was ineligible because of his colorblindness. Oh, I think that's still a hard rule.
Starting point is 00:22:54 He was distressed, yeah. My husband is 6'5 and can't ride Disney rides. Aw. Disneyland rides, they're like built in the 1950s and they're for smaller people. He's got his big legs. He can't do the Matahorn. He can barely do Space Mountain. Actually, there was a life hack.
Starting point is 00:23:12 He couldn't fit his legs in Space Mountain. The lap bar won't come down. And so the cast member is like, oh, try crossing your ankle. Oh, yeah, sure. And so it's kind of a force man spread. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He can't pee in some of the airplane bathrooms, small planes. He's like, I can't stand straight to pee.
Starting point is 00:23:31 He could pee in the bathroom. He could, yeah. All right. Hope you're kind of taking notes. Sort of, yeah. I mean, some mental notes here. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:23:43 All right. Oh, we got to take notes? There's a theme. I'm looking for a theme. Question four of set one. Whose tombstone is engraved with the words, The best is yet to come. Oh.
Starting point is 00:24:02 Colin? I don't know, I already regret it, but is it, is it, is it Frank Sinatra? It is Frank Sinatra. Okay, all right. Shouldn't have censored myself. All blue eyes there. Coincidentally, that was the last song he sang in public. Oh.
Starting point is 00:24:20 At 79. Wow. Yeah. But they didn't put it on his tombstone because that was the last song. It was just a coincidence. Yeah, yeah. I'm sure it was what he wanted was on there. Right.
Starting point is 00:24:29 Yeah. It was either that or, oh, oh. Now, I'm dying. Horrible. So Frank Sinatra debuted as like a teen idol in the 40s. His publicist would audition girls. He would pay them to scream and to be the loudest at Frank Sinatra's shows. His early teen idol shows, plant them.
Starting point is 00:24:58 And then, you know, when Frank Sinatra goes on, they're the ones who would scream like, oh my God, I love it. Which then wows up everybody. It was like influencers. It's like seeding. Yes. I was like, oh, man, that's awesome. What a good ploy.
Starting point is 00:25:13 All right. Well, there are your four answers, four questions. So we got NASDAQ, a state and trust Air Force, Frank Sinatra. And there's a theme in here. Okay, that was the first set of questions. Yeah, what am I looking for here? I'm looking for something. All right, all right, here we go.
Starting point is 00:25:35 I'm give you another set of four questions. All right, and hopefully this will lead us there. I really enjoy this journey that we're on. I don't know where we're going, but I like it. It's silly, and I don't know if it'll work, but we'll see. It's still trivia. We're still playing trivia. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:25:51 Second side of question. First question here. We can thank Salmon P. Chase. This person's name is Salmon P. Chase. We can thank Salmon P. Chase, the Treasury, secretary under Abraham Lincoln for designing what we can thank salmon P Chase the treasury secretary under Abraham Lincoln for designing what what did salmon who's a person not a fish yeah this really feels familiar design treasury the secretary so some
Starting point is 00:26:27 currency or some I know that he designed Are you all buzzing in? No, because you can't think of it. Did he design? Oh, okay, go for it. Chris. Credit card. Incorrect.
Starting point is 00:26:42 Dang. It's a good guess. It's a good guess. Sam and P. Chase designed the first American paper money. Paper currency. Oh, okay. Okay. I was thinking like a specific bill, but I, well, okay, all right.
Starting point is 00:27:00 Wow. The first bill. The first bill. The first bill. Wow. Yep. Okay. Treasury Secretary under Abraham Lincoln. So he not only designed and then got it engraved, he picked green. That was a big.
Starting point is 00:27:15 He picked the color green. So all of our American green money, all thanks to CM&P Chase, not only did he pick the color, but in a brilliant self-marketing move, he also put himself on the money, like a picture of himself on the money. In hopes of getting a little bit more clout and public recognition, maybe would help him with his political career after that. Yes, he put himself on the first ever U.S. paper currency. And that was as known as greenback, green back, because it had green on it. It's interesting because one of the kind of the slang we have for money is like lettuce, cash nickname for cash, because it's green.
Starting point is 00:28:01 Actually, between like the 1900s to like 1950s, they were called all sorts of vegetables. Money was called kale. Money was called lettuce. I've heard cabbage. Cabbage? Yeah, yeah, because it was great. So they're cycling through all the vegetables. No charred, though.
Starting point is 00:28:19 All right. Here we are. Question number two of the second set. Okay. Due to mishandling of her trust, all of Carrie Fisher's assets and who will inherit them were made public. So usually trusts are private and estates are publicly recorded. When Carrie Fisher passed away, a lot of this stuff was public. People knew about what she had of the inventory of her assets.
Starting point is 00:28:42 This includes all her cash accounts, real estate, her rights to her likeness, public image, the IP for her books, for all her screen appearances and specials, the trademark she owns, the copyright she owns. All of that went to who. All of Carrie Fisher's assets Went to whom Okay, well, I have to put this out there Just so we can get it off the table Okay, Chris Okay
Starting point is 00:29:16 Her dog Oh, that's a good one Oh God, what's his name Gary or something? He has like a normal person here Yeah, yeah The Boston Terrier, but no, but no, no, no Went to a person, went to her daughter What is her name?
Starting point is 00:29:30 Oh, sure. Billy Lord. Is that right? Yes, Billy Lord. Billy Lord. Billy Lord. Also an actor. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Yep, the whole point of creating a trust is to keep your family out of court and keep your affairs totally private. Here we go. Third question of the second set. Considered one of the tallest historical figures who led the free French forces in resisting Germany during World War II and then became provisional president of France after the war. One of the
Starting point is 00:30:06 tallest... Considered one of the tallest historical figures who led the free French forces in resisting Germany during World War II and became provisional president of France. Chris... Is that De Gaulle? Charles... Yes. Charles de Gaul, the airport named after
Starting point is 00:30:23 this guy. Yes. Six-five, very tall guy. Very, very tall guy. Taller than Abraham Lincoln, who is our tallest president. That was one of DeGal's defining traits. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I looked it up. It is 99.6 percentile at 6-5.
Starting point is 00:30:42 Yeah. You know, he never rode the Matterhorn. I'm pretty sure. No, no, no, no, no. DeGal never rode the Matterhorn. All right. I mean, we're answering many, if not most of these questions, but the theme is eluding me, Chris.
Starting point is 00:30:56 I'm about you. Maybe you guys don't know that. the theme. Maybe we don't. Okay. Last question's going to lock it all the place. I bet some of you are screaming, screaming at us. All right. Our last question of the of the second set. Our final question, here we go. The amount of melanin found in the stroma determines the color of what? The amount of melanin found in the stroma will determine the color of what? Chris. Your eyes.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Correct. It is the eyes. We probably know what melanin is. What is stroma? What is stroma? Stroma is the front layer of the iris. We commonly hear that like, oh, the iris is the color of your eyes. It's true-ish.
Starting point is 00:31:46 But really, everybody's born with hazily, bluey, greeny eyes. But it's the melanin that exists in this front layer of the iris called the stroma. that makes our eyes look brown. You can actually get surgery. You can get laser and you can thin your stroma. Really? Yes, hence decreasing the amount of melanin because now you're working with a thinner layer of stroma. People do it.
Starting point is 00:32:14 I don't know if it's safe or not, but people do it. And yes, boom, their eyes turn blue. Wow. Uncovers what's underneath and that's usually blue and light color. Cool, huh? All right, guys. Hey. Two sets of four questions.
Starting point is 00:32:29 They're kind of like twin questions. Yeah. So like the first one on one side or one track was the NASDAQ and the other track was about currency, right? And then one track about estates and trusts. And then the other track about Carrie Fisher's estate details. And right? And then one question about the Air Force. Air Force is what?
Starting point is 00:33:00 And, oh, the Air Force height restrictions. And then other Charles de Gaulle's height, okay, right? Lincoln was very tall. Yeah. Tall people. Okay. And then Sinatra and... Old blue eyes by Sinatra.
Starting point is 00:33:19 I'm looking for a theme. Is it... Blue eyes and Sinatra. All right, guys. All right, what is it? Let me reveal the answer. Here we go. I'm looking for a man in finance.

Starting point is 00:34:28 It is absolutely true. It's true. So I was thinking about that. It's so easy to learn about things in the past. And it's so much harder to keep up with new current stuff. Sure. Yeah. We were just at, I was at pub quiz with some friends this past week.
Starting point is 00:34:46 And we were doing well. We were doing well until the music round. and the music round, you know, again, it was just, we were all kind of looking at each other, and we didn't have enough variety in our demographics. I'm just going to leave it at that. We were too old, and we missed a lot of the hyper, hyper current tracks. Not a lot, but enough, we know the Chapel Roan song, you know, but like something that, like, had just hit the top of the charts like the week before.
Starting point is 00:35:14 We got like six out of ten, and that was enough to do us in. It's just you can't be giving up. You can't be leaving four points on the table in the, in the, music round. We got there. Hope you learned stuff about finance and about blue eyes and how all of us have blue eyes. But especially me. Are your eyes blue? Yeah. Oh, yeah, they are. That means you don't have melanin in your stroma. Or my skin. Um, so let's, just don't have any anywhere. I didn't need any fancy surgery. All right. Starting point is 00:37:56 Not bad, right? Not bad. You might remember a similar quiz that I did. Karen's already getting out her writing implementation because I said anagram. You might remember a similar quiz that I did on many years back for Thanksgiving in which I gave you a sentence and the final two words of the sentence could be anagrammed into a dish that you would find on your thing. Yes. Yes, yes. And I have, that quiz has now returned.
Starting point is 00:38:26 I'm going to give you some sentences, and the final two words of each sentence can be anagramed into something that you would find on a Christmas tree. Oh. Oh. So, yes, here we go. Get ready for, oh, Christmas tree, more Tetris. More Tetris, Tesh, more Tetris.
Starting point is 00:38:47 More Tetris, more Tetris, yes. Okay, here is your first There will be no practice round Okay, all right As I didn't have enough of these to do a practice round Last two words The final two words of each Sentence can be anagramed

Starting point is 00:40:18 They usually. come pre-equipped with those. You don't have to buy extra. Yeah, right, right. The ladies of the Moulin Rouge color their red dresses with can-can dye. Wait, before you
Starting point is 00:40:37 say anything, I realize maybe this isn't the most difficult to anagram. I'm so proud of this sentence. That's good. It's pretty good. Put me out of my misery. Candy, can't. Candy cane
Starting point is 00:40:51 Very good Ladies of the Moulin Rouge Fumbling to get the buzzer Couldn't press it It didn't press it The sweat just flies out again Okay Fet up with dishonest undergarments

Starting point is 00:41:29 Fet up with dishonest undergarments. You need the sincereer bra. It's not stuffed or padded. It's honest. It's sincere. It's the sincere bra. Usually these might be, you might take a needle and thread and like string these up. and hang them on a Christmas tree.
Starting point is 00:41:50 You don't see these maybe as much anymore. Maybe you don't see these outside of, like, New England. But it was definitely a thing. Sincere, what am I? I'm just, I'm just, I'm just. Berry, berries. Yeah. Oh.
Starting point is 00:42:08 Wow. Oh. Wow. Colin. Eventually. Eventually. Cranberries. Cranberries.
Starting point is 00:42:17 Cranberries. Well, you put them on a tree? I've never seen a garland and cram— I mean, I've seen, like, the popcorn, right? But, like, some kind of thing. Huh, okay. Cranberries. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:43:20 A streamer. And here you go. Here is the final sentence of putting all of us out of our misery. The final sentence. The dress looked terrible on the rack, and it also fit garishly. Ooh. The why? This one's for our friends in the United Kingdom.
Starting point is 00:43:45 Oh. We don't have a fancy name for these. They have a boring name for these. Fish. This is for our friends across the pond. The dress looked terrible on the rack, and it also fit garishly. Is fish one of the words? No, it's not.
Starting point is 00:44:02 Okay. It's ruled out. Not fish. Why? What are they put on their Christmas trees? Just take a bass or something like that and just tail it on the top instead of a star. This sounds like a old. British tradition. Sure. Christmas fish.
Starting point is 00:44:21 Sparkling. Oh. Ah, Karen. Fairy light. Fairy lights. Yes. Because that is what Christmas lights are called in the airy light. Yes. You know what? I spelled garrishly wrong. That's why. Okay. I said garishly. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:42 Where's this extra R? I spelled it right and I didn't get it. So, yeah. great job everybody i did i did want to put popcorn turned out the only anagram of popcorn is copporn so just couldn't get in there maybe next year thank you for playing more tetris cash get to toronto's main venues like budweiser stage and the new roger stadium with go transit Thanks to Go Transit's special online e-ticket fairs, a $10 one-day weekend pass offers unlimited travel on any weekend day or holiday anywhere along the Go Network. Starting point is 00:45:39 All right, we got one last quiz. I have assembled a music quiz for you guys here to close out the show. Haven't had a music quiz in a while myself. This one has a theme. So you guys are going to be tasked with answering. So you guys are going to have to give me the name of the song and the artist performing for each one as well as the theme. Now, I'm asking you to give me the name of the song and the artist because some of these are very well-known songs.
Starting point is 00:46:18 So I want to make you work for it a little bit here. You got to at least show me something. And then you might be asking you yourself, okay, well, why is he giving us a music quiz if there are some well-known songs on there? And I want you just to sort of maybe just dwell on that. Like, why would I do that? What is the theme?
Starting point is 00:46:34 I will tell you... Is all the questions you missed at your pub trivia room? No, no. All of the songs on this quiz, I assembled from an article that I was reading recently. Oh, okay. And I did not necessarily choose these songs, but I assembled them myself, trimmed them down myself.
Starting point is 00:46:55 I will play for you anywhere between 15 to 20, 25 seconds. Not a whole lot. As I say, some of these songs, I know you know the song, but do you know the theme? So we're going to start easier, work our way harder. So you guys can do verses here. Oh, yeah. Yeah. All right. There's going to be some Chris Kohler favorites in this one. Yes. Again, I want to remind you, I did not myself select these songs. It just so happens. There are some 70s, 80s, you know, you know, yeah, well, we'll see. There is no Fleetwood Mac in this quiz. I'm telling you right now, Karen, no Fleetwood Mac. Can you even call it a music quiz? Can even call it a Kohler quiz? All right. Okay, so here we go. Get ready.
Starting point is 00:47:41 to play. Again, I'm looking for artist and name of the track. Here we go. Number one. Karen. Karen and Chris. What is it? Betty and the Jets. by Elton John. Are you sure about that, Karen?
Starting point is 00:48:15 Yeah? You sure? Yeah. Yes, it is. Okay, you didn't sound very sure. Yeah, that's right. That's right. I didn't know it's like, oh, covers or something.
Starting point is 00:48:22 Yeah, yeah, you know. All right. Okay. All right. Moving right along. Track number two. Oh, my little pretty one, my pretty one, when you're going to give me some type. Oh, you cut it off, right?
Starting point is 00:48:52 Chris, Chris, what do we got there? That is My Sharona, I believe it's by The Knack. You got it. You got it. That is My Sharona by The Knack. Okay. Reality Bites. Original soundtrack and reality bites.
Starting point is 00:49:05 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That movie's kind of back in the consciousness recently. I think there was like the 30th anniversary Oh gosh, don't even Okay Track number three So I turn myself to face me But I've never caught a glimpse
Starting point is 00:49:24 How the others must see you fake are I'm much too fast to take that test Karen Chachach Changes David Bowie that is David Bowie yes you've got it with changes correct correct okay
Starting point is 00:49:43 so we're coming around here that was uh again not curated by Colin not not selected by Colin I might have chosen the order here yeah I'm not gonna yeah all right but but maybe getting a little more difficult as we get toward the end here okay track number four maybe you're maybe you're getting the theme maybe you're not track number four
Starting point is 00:50:01 Chris. Su-Sudio. You got it. What's the full title of that song? I think it's, is it Su-Sudio? It is Susudio. It's not just Sudu-Sudio. No, that is correct.
Starting point is 00:50:43 That is right. All right. But Sus-Su-Su-Soo. Moving right along. You know where Phil Collins recorded that song? It's a studio. It's such a dad joke. It's great.
Starting point is 00:50:58 It's great. It's great dad joke. It's really good. Okay, all right, track number five, play. Okay, maybe a little bit more difficult here, but I might be giving you a little bit more clues as well. Karen, you got a little bit more clues as well. Karen, you got to guess. George Michael Is not George Michael I can see a little bit
Starting point is 00:51:36 You're a generation at least Too late for George Michael If not two generations An extremely Extremely extremely Good Selling song and album in the 1970s This is the BGs Oh
Starting point is 00:51:51 Okay okay With jive talking Jive talking Oh Okay so as I say we're maybe getting a little bit more difficult as we ran out the end of the quiz here. I've heard of that song, but I haven't never listened to that. Yes.
Starting point is 00:52:04 I mean, that was a big, big hit for them. Certainly no staying alive, but huge hit for them. All right, pay attention here to, you know, why? Pay attention. We're trying. We're trying. All right. Track number six.
Starting point is 00:52:17 Okay. But I wanted it that way. I think that any love is good love it. So I took when I could get. you ain't seen nothing yet you ain't seen nothing yet but what's the you got it you got it that is you ain't seen nothing yet by three-letter abbreviation oh yellow r u sb rugged no w i r t lc wow you're a lot more than i thought karen well done you rattled off almost all of them it is none other than three old up bTO bckman turner
Starting point is 00:53:00 overdraft. Here we go. Last track. Last track. There's a challenging one here. Now remember, there's still a theme on the line here, and you can, you know, I think you can still get the theme. You don't know all the tracks. Here we go. Last track. Number seven, this was a big hit once upon
Starting point is 00:53:16 a time, going all the way back to 1976 for this one. Cheez. Track seven, play. Good old, roll, roll, show I've got to go. Saturday night. night. Oh, to rock it up,
Starting point is 00:53:31 pull it up, do it all, have a ball. Saturday night. Saturday night. Saturday night. Saturday night. This is a Saturday.
Starting point is 00:53:47 Okay. Karen. I'm guessing Saturday night. You got it. You got the track. Saturday night. The monkeys? Oh.
Starting point is 00:53:55 You know, I think I, maybe I know this. Uh-huh. Is it the Bay City Roll? You got it. Great teamwork. Great, great pub quiz. S-A-T-U-R-T-A-Y. My parents listened to this a lot.
Starting point is 00:54:10 Yes. All right. You know what? In a very, very early, early episode of Good Jeopardy and I had a music round where I just combined all the songs that had spelling. And this was one of them. You know, like Gloria, I had B-A-N-N-A-N-A-S. You know, like it's all spelling.
Starting point is 00:54:28 That's a good quiz. That's a good quiz. All right. So let's run it back here. We got Elton John, Benny and the Chats. We've got, we got, we got the knack with Maichrona. We got David Bowie with Changes. We have Phil Collins with Sissudio from the studio. Oh, Chris. I got it. What is it? It's, well, it's repeated syllables. It's a, but, but, but Benny and the Jets and Ma Ma Maishirona and Chich. Oh, my God. It's a guy talking, you ain't seen nothing yet. I don't know where that is. Baby. Baby.
Starting point is 00:55:06 Yes. You got it, Chris. Oh, my God. You know, I feel so. I keep singing it, too. Yes. I was like, oh, my gosh. I was like, you guys are hiding it in plain sight.
Starting point is 00:55:18 It was fantastic. Yes. So why, yeah, I was like cutting it off right before in most of those tracks. It's right. The studio. Oh, my God. So as you two know, I may have mentioned this on the show before, my wife, she's an educator, she's a teacher, she is also by training a speech therapist. Yes.
Starting point is 00:55:40 And among the many publications that come into our house is the quarterly magazine of the Stuttering Foundation. Wow. And the fall, I suppose seasonal, the fall issue, fall 2024 issue of the Stuttering Foundation magazine, caught my eye. on the cover was a picture of Bachman Turner Overdrive. And the headline is Stuttering takes the stage in rock and roll history. And it was all about famous rock songs that feature stuttering in the choruses or the lyrics. And so the Stuttering Foundation issued a press release this year naming, you ain't seen nothing yet as the top stuttering song of all time beating out
Starting point is 00:56:34 Benny and the Jets beating out changes beating out beating out the my generation by the Who I did not put that one in this quiz I thought it might be too much of a tip so this article goes on yet to list a number of famous songs that are you know obviously well known on their own right but also well known within the stuttering community for featuring in some sense, stuttering lyrics. Yes, so this song does have the Bubba Baby in it. The story behind it, I did not know the story.
Starting point is 00:57:05 Bachman Turner Overdrive, a Canadian band, started by three Bachman brothers and a Turner. Okay, so, yeah. Okay, that's good to know. Bachman Turner Overdrive's original manager was another Bachman brother, Gary Bachman, and Gary Bachman was a stutterer. Randy Bachman had a song that he had written.
Starting point is 00:57:31 The song was, you can't see nothing yet, and performed it sometimes in a jokey way for Gary, with Gary there with stuttering lyrics, you know, in a brotherly, kind of needling your brother kind of way. He recorded a version of this to tape with the intention that Gary would be the only one to hear this song, okay? So they were recording their next album.
Starting point is 00:57:52 They had room for another track on the album. And so Randy Bachman played, this song, you know, explained how the lyrics were kind of a joke, said, okay, we can put this on the album, but you got to let me, you know, record a serious version of it, you know, without the stuttering, and it was kind of like an inside joke with me and my brother. Studio did not like the serious version. And so the studio and the band convinced him, you know, like, you know, with Gary's blessing to put the original version on the album, became a huge hit. Easily Bachman Turner Overdrive's biggest hit. The sort of the code of the story is that Gary
Starting point is 00:58:26 Bachman, the stutterer, did overcome his stutter through speech therapy. And yes, over, over time. So it all ties back in together to my wife's career and to the Stuttering Foundation. And in this very interesting article, they had a whole list of helpful songs for me to choose from and assemble this quiz. Are there any songs you didn't include? I did not include. Yeah, there are a couple. I didn't. by Joe, big army hit. I did not include that one. It was not listed.
Starting point is 00:59:00 Oh, what? Yeah, songs in the article, I did not include, as I mentioned, My Generation by The Who, The Reflex, the song by Duran Duran. But I included most of the other songs that they listed in their article. So thank you, the Stuttering Foundation, fall 2024 issue, for educating me
Starting point is 00:59:18 and providing me grist for the music quiz mill. And Chris, yeah, I was hoping, would all come together at the very end with the Saturday night from from Bay City Rollers. Honestly, it was because I had written down like Chichanges and Su-Sudio right next to each other. And when I was re-looking at the list, I saw the commonality between those two.
Starting point is 00:59:42 And then I was like, oh, of course, yeah. I think this association can also come up maybe with a, with a more updated list to include songs that are. Oh, oh, okay. All right. Finally a music quiz comes along just for me, and now they've got to change their whole article. Okay. This is looking back over, you know, 50 years of history.
Starting point is 01:00:03 So I think it is maybe slanted towards songs that have been around a while, Karen. I will admit, yeah, I think the newest song on there was probably Susudio. Which is what year? I believe Susudio was 80. 1985. Give me a break. Give me a break. well well done you guys got it collectively it's it's similar but this reminds me of you know feral
Starting point is 01:00:31 williams a lot of the songs that he writes or produces or his own songs starts with a four repeated count it's almost like a beat stutter and that's how it has become a signature i never i never heard that or noticed that but yeah the next time i hear a yeah a farrell song yeah all right well that's our show everybody thank you for joining me and thank you listeners for listening in hope you learn stuff about loose meats oh god it's the old every time every time you know what listeners i keep i would copy and paste my my outro it just has the text from like our beef episode where we talked about the loose meat sandwich and because you're ron burgundy you just read whatever's written there
