Starting point is 00:00:41 and Unirold's 50th anniversary summer specials. Hello and welcome to Good News, York. That's right, it's Good News York. We've been off a little bit for many reasons. Some I can't get into, but I'll give you a hint. We have an expansion coming, and we are going to be announcing that soon, but we can't tell you exactly what that means, but it's exciting.
Starting point is 00:01:14 That's why you're seeing my ugly mug today. Matt is off doing Matt things, bids. So you're stuck with me this morning. It is Monday. Happy Monday. I had a great weekend. I hope you did too. I had one of those weekends where when someone's like, hey, what'd you do?
Starting point is 00:01:33 And I'm like, you know, nothing. But at the same time, I did so much. It was a productive adulting kind of weekend. It was a weekend of, you know, rearranging the garage. It was a weekend of cleaning out the front closet. All that boring shit that we do as adults. But then something happened. My wife came up the stairs with a look on her face and I knew what it meant.
Starting point is 00:02:01 It's time to decorate for Christmas. What? That's right. What is it? November 1st? Are we in November 1st? Yeah. So technically, was yesterday October 31st?
Starting point is 00:02:12 No. Okay, today's the third. See? I don't even know what day it is. We decorated on November 2nd for Christmas, and I was so torn by this. Now, my wife made a good point. She came up and said, look, we have a wedding next weekend. The kids have like three birthday parties to follow.
Starting point is 00:02:34 We have something next week. This is really the only weekend we can do it. And I said, but we're going from straight up taking down Halloween decorations right into Christmas with no break in between. And that makes me nauseous. Because I've always thought, let's, I think for me at least, I think you let you get closer to Thanksgiving. And then once Thanksgiving happens, that's when you boom, up go the decorations. But my wife also made the point that if you do decorate. Christmas, you know, early enough, you get a longer Christmas. And that is a good point. You know,
Starting point is 00:03:14 I'm in the Christmas spirit on November 3rd or 2nd, whatever day it is. I'm already in the Christmas spearmament. We've got, spirit, we've got garland, we've got trees, we've got lights. It's all up. So I walk in the house and it's like Santa just took a dump all over my house and I'm excited about it. So she makes a good point because, you know, before we would decorate right around after, you know, Thanksgiving and then we'd get what, two, three, four weeks if you're lucky, and boom, Christmas time. So I guess my question is, did we decorate too early? I don't know. It makes sense scheduling-wise, but people are walking in our house going, what do you guys? Why? You know, we're like Lowe's. Like all of a sudden you go to Lowe's in October and they've got the Christmas
Starting point is 00:04:03 stuff up already. So we did a little bit of that. Another thing that happened, look, guys, I know it's not GNY sports, but look, the bills beat the chiefs yesterday. This is a big deal. Even if you don't watch football, you know you at least heard about it. It is a conference rivalry that has become a game that everybody looks forward to every football season. Right? And by the way, if you don't know, we have a new side quest of Good News York. called GNY Sports, Good News York Sports, hosted by me.
Starting point is 00:04:42 And new episodes go up every Thursday. You can check it out right here where Good News York airs as well, or where we stream and download podcasts as well at Good News York, goodnews York.com. But again, this is not GNY Sports, but got to talk about the bill. So yes, it was a very, it's a very big game whenever they play. It's kind of like when the Red Sox and Yankees play, you know. It's just, it's always, it always comes down.
Starting point is 00:05:08 to the wire and it always gets to a point where I feel like I'm going to vomit. And that's exactly what happened. They never make it easy. There was a lot that happened yesterday that really was detrimental for the bills. And that was, first of all, they won. Now, if you've been following along the kind of the overall theme, the narrative, is that the bills always beat the Chiefs during the regular season and then they lose to the Chiefs in the postseason.
Starting point is 00:05:36 And that is true. The bills are now, as of today, 5 and 0 against the Chiefs in the regular season, and 0 in 4 against the Chiefs in the playoffs. So in that regard, people were trying to brush it off, like, you know, before the game, like, oh, who cares even if the bills win, that's what they always do, or even if they lose, it's fine. It's just the regular, this was not just a regular season game. You have to understand that the Chiefs already had three losses going into this game. and the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers are not letting off the gas pedal in their own division.
Starting point is 00:06:16 So we're not even talking about a threat to not winning the division. We're talking about a threat to not even make the playoffs. And that's the same case for the bills. The bills as of today are now a half a game behind the Patriots. The Patriots are seven and two, bills are six and two. But as we all know, the Patriots did beat the bills a few weeks ago, so they have a half game lead. So what used to be the Bills and the Chiefs running away with the division and them playing each other was, well, it's just going to be, it's going to matter for who gets home field or in the playoffs or better seating. No, this is to stay alive to possibly even have a chance to get a one seat.
Starting point is 00:06:53 It's also, in some cases, are you going to win the division? Are you going to get the wild card? Or I'm going to go a step further. What if you don't make the playoffs? I'm serious. The chiefs are a very good team. They're a dynasty. But I'm not saying anything on a turn. If the chiefs now have four losses. And again, their division is tight. Off the top of my head, I'd have to look. I don't know exactly what the standings are. But I do know that the chiefs are in third place. And it's early, anything can happen. So this game meant way more than just your regular, oh, well, whoever wins, it doesn't matter. They're going to see each other again in January. There's no. guarantee for January. For either team. And, you know, there's so many stats now in football and they did flash some stat.
Starting point is 00:07:42 Like, if the Bills had lost, their chance to get the one seed fell to like, I don't even know, 11%. And their chance to win the division was X percent. And so it was, it was an important game in that regard. But on top of that, it was an important game because things happened that needed to happen and to make us Bill's fans feel a lot better. I went on a rant on my sports show last week, going off about the Bills,
Starting point is 00:08:10 after they beat the Panthers 40 to 9. So I looked like a spoiled brat sitting here going, I don't understand. You know, the Bills won 40 to 9, and I'm upset. And there was a good reason for that because I felt like they were delaying the pain. We all know up until yesterday's game, The Bills had a great run game, a great passing game behind the line of scrimmage or, you know, a mid-passing game, you know, middle of the field, but no downfield threats because they don't have guys that can separate.
Starting point is 00:08:47 They've got guys that can do different things. Keon Coleman, to me, is a power slot. He's not a boundary receiver. They're trying to play him that way. Khalil Shakur is a fantastic slot receiver. Dalton, Kincaid, Dawson, Knox, and even Jack. Jackson Haas, there are three tight ends. That was a tight end game yesterday.
Starting point is 00:09:04 These are tight ends that are good at blocking, but really, really great pass catchers. So we knew going into this game, they had a banged-up secondary. And so not a very good pass defense. Questions about Cole Bishop and the safety position as a whole with Taylor Rap being hurt and DeMar Hamlin being hurt. And Cole Bishop just not in his second year, not. looking like the stud athlete that he was drafted to be. I mean, his athletic, like they have a rating system for your, like, your athletic ability. He scored like a nine point something. Like,
Starting point is 00:09:42 he's an insane athlete. But he just hasn't been playing the safety position the way it should be played and not in that system. Well, guess what? Yesterday was the opposite of all of that. The passing, the past defense was phenomenal. It was the Cole Bishop coming out game. He was everywhere. He was in the right places. He was making plays left and right. He was a huge factor in that game.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Max Hairston, their first round rookie corner, who we have been dying to see, who's been hurt, got hurt in training camp. He's playing his second game. Yes, he had an interception and was more of an arm. punt, you know, like, Holmes threw it up while he was under dress and he caught it, which is great. But for me, that's not what made me excited as a Bill's fan. What made me excited was watching him keep up with Xavier Worthy, which we all know is a player who is one of the fastest players in the entire league.
Starting point is 00:10:45 So to see him not only keeping up with Xavier Worthy, but in a lot of cases just kind of shutting him down, that's so much hope for this defense and for the future. And then the defensive line. That was the best I've seen the defensive line play since... I mean, honestly, or maybe like 2050? I don't know. Definitely the best I've seen them play against Mahomes ever. I mean, Mahomes got hit, and it was glorious.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Especially the one with Epinasse on the sideline, watching him go back. I loved it. I loved it. We all loved it. The defensive line not only gave their offensive line fits all day. I mean, they just manhandled them. I forgot how many QB hurries they had.
Starting point is 00:11:36 Double digit, QB hurries, and we all saw the sacks. Joey Bosa, for me, justified his entire contract. I mean, he's been playing well all year. He justified his entire contract yesterday. He was a game record. He was the Joey Bosa. We were all praying we would get. and let's pray that it stays that way.
Starting point is 00:11:56 Why? Because Ed Oliver's been out, as we know, but now Michael Hoyt tears his Achilles during the game. This is a guy who we picked up in the offseason who was a gadget defensive line. He could play defensive line. He could play defensive tackle. He could play defensive end.
Starting point is 00:12:14 He can even play linebacker. He can even play linebacker and drop into coverage. I mean, he's unbelievable. So we thought. And the seven-quarters, that he's played, six quarters that he's played, whatever it is, he has made a huge difference. He was a big reason that defensive line was successful as they were yesterday. Yes, Joey Bosa was getting after Mahomes, but that was because, obviously, because he's great, but also because,
Starting point is 00:12:41 you know, Hoyt was all over the place and allowing, you know, when one or two other defensive of players are successful. It's a gentle cruising. Tropical terror, which is like a pinocalada. Orange har, tasty orange with a hint of orange cream, and murder mystery. A blend of cherry cola and spices. It frees up other guys to be successful, too. It's a working machine.
Starting point is 00:14:30 It was just, it was awesome to see that. The run game, you know, we saw James Cook yesterday. He ripped off 200 yards, a record-breaking performance. And he, a week ago, 200-something yards. usually after that happens they have a low. He did not have a low. He had over 100 yards rushing. So the ground game was working.
Starting point is 00:14:55 And Josh Allen, 23 for 26, 200 and I think 70 yards, a handful of touchdowns. He ties or he passes Earl Campbell. Ford rushing touchdowns. Earl Campbell, a legendary running back. He also set the franchise record yesterday for quarterback. rating. I mean, everything we were worried about the last few weeks seemed to flip yesterday. And the good news is it wasn't against a New Orleans Saints or a Carolina Panthers. It was against not only an AFC contender, but against the chiefs, the team that is the dynasty. It was,
Starting point is 00:15:37 they played well in all aspects of the game. Yes, there are still, look, I'm still, I'm still praying that they go after a wide receiver that can get open downfield. They need it. That's the missing piece. But what it did show me was maybe they can get by and still do well with what they have. I just think Joe Brady needs to scheme guys open a little bit more. And I'm not understanding like that third and ten screen pass to Shakir. Like how many times are we going to do this and why are we calling it there?
Starting point is 00:16:09 There's definitely some things Joe Brady can clean up. Play calling wise. And definitely they need somebody to get open downfield. They did it a little bit yesterday, but you got to think about overall, can it be sustained? And I don't think we can do it with just our tight ends. They need somebody. But now with Michael Hoyt's injury,
Starting point is 00:16:30 he's out within Achilles, which is devastating. And still a banged-up secondary, you could argue not only do they need a receiver before the trade deadline, they need possibly a defensive tackle with Oliver being out and Michael Hoyt being out for the season. And again, as I said, the secondary being banged up. So now I wonder, are they going to go after a corner and defensive tackle
Starting point is 00:16:51 and not address the wide receiver situation? And how does the cap fall into that? So there's a lot of question marks, but the good news is, look, they're six and two. They're in second place in the east by only by a half a game. And they've arguably played the two toughest opponents on the schedule already and that would be the Ravens and that would be the Chiefs. They do have the Eagles later in the season but it's so late in the season that
Starting point is 00:17:17 those teams might not even be playing their starters but we won't know. Another thing I noticed about the game and then I'll stop talking about it is I wrote it down here. I got all my notes. I I
Starting point is 00:17:32 Reggie Gilliam is a fullback and back in the day a fullback A fullback was a position like the Mike Allstott days, right? Like the Allstot days where they used fullbacks like running backs. It's an old school position. Now they're mostly used for blocking. It's something that you don't really, if you hear about a fullback,
Starting point is 00:17:55 it usually means they did something wrong. Let me tell you something. Yesterday was a spotlight on Reggie Gilliam and exactly how important he is to that offense in specifically the run game. They were showing how they were pulling Gilliam and using, him for zone blocking inside and outside, and he was just clearing holes for James Cook. And by the way, and that was also because of how great their offensive line is as well. But shout out to Reggie Gilliam on just how important he is, and I love that.
Starting point is 00:18:27 Another thing I wanted to shout out was I'm very, very excited. We all know about the 13 seconds. game, right? That's the most famous. The bills have lost four times to the chiefs in the playoffs. Most notably, the most famous one being the 13 seconds game, where we're in overtime. It is a shootout. Mahomes, Allen, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, it was one of the greatest games of all time in NFL history. And it ended with the bills finally scoring. There's 13 seconds left. All they got to do is stop the chiefs and they go to the Super Bowl. And what happens in 13 seconds. I think the Chiefs went 80-something yards downfield in 13 seconds, scored one. It was
Starting point is 00:19:13 probably the most heartbreaking loss since Wide Right for me personally. And yesterday, this game came down to Mahomes getting the ball back with 22 seconds. And I thought, I cannot live through a 22 seconds game. We have the 13 seconds game. We cannot do a 22 seconds game. And thankfully that has been nipped. That's not going to happen. So that's another shout out. One thing that did kind of concern me, the last thing I'll say is a couple of timeouts
Starting point is 00:19:48 got blown early in the game. And they were both by the defense because there seemed to be some sort of confusion on the defense. And first of all, we're in year eight with Sean McDermott as the defensive coach, we are supposedly Super Bowl or bust. That is not what a Super Bowl contender does.
Starting point is 00:20:12 You don't look confused on defense twice and blow timeouts. And the other part of that is when you're playing the Chiefs, you need timeouts like you need oxygen. For the exact reason I just said, which is it came down to 22 seconds left. You know, these games, the NFL in general, but especially with Mahomes and Allen, it's more like basketball where it's coming down to the last minute.
Starting point is 00:20:35 It's incredible to watch, but it also is the reason I'm insane. And why, if I ever have a heart attack, I told my wife to sue the bills. Because I, they never lose just by losing. They lose in like incredible fashion. And they never win by blowing out, albeit last week they did for once. It's always like down to the wire. But that's why we love it. That's why we love football.
Starting point is 00:21:03 That's why we love the bills. So the Bills beat the Chiefs. They're six and two. They're a half a game behind the Pats in the AFC East and looking good for the playoffs. And the Chiefs are now really up against it. And we're going to see exactly what they're made of. So I am so happy today. Respect to the Chiefs, a well-played game, well-coached on both sides,
Starting point is 00:21:26 but it does feel good to say that the Bills beat the Chiefs. And that's all I got to say about that. So that was a big part of my weekend. The Christmas decorating, again, comment below. What do you believe is the cutoff, or at least the start date to when you should start decorating for Christmas? I came up with this idea, by the way, and it's either really stupid or really cool.
Starting point is 00:21:53 That's how it works with me, one or the only. I think I mentioned this on Good News York with Matt a while ago. Maybe not. But now that the weather's changing, and when I check the weather in the morning, it's usually like, Alexa, what's the weather going to be like? And she's like, the weather today will be a high of 90 and a low of 37. And I'm like, well, how the fuck am I supposed to plan for that? So I never know what to wear. I'm a dude, right?
Starting point is 00:22:21 And I want to, can somebody, and look, if someone comes up with this, just include me in it, all right? if you're going to steal my idea, it's timestamp. I always thought, like, I wish there was an app where, you know, you don't have to input every piece of clothing that you have. That would be, nobody wants to do that. Ain't nobody got time for that. But, you know, you just kind of put an idea of, like,
Starting point is 00:22:44 I have, you know, sweatshirts, zip-ups, pants, short. This is what I like to wear. And so you wake up in the morning, and you step outside and you take a deep breath. ADD. You wake up in the morning, you look at the app, Somehow it's tied into the weather. And this app will say,
Starting point is 00:23:01 Mike, good morning. I think today is a jeans and t-shirt day, but maybe bring one of your zip-ups because it's going to get colder later. Because half the reason I'm running late in the morning is I cannot decide what to wear because the weather is bipolar. So I have to believe there,
Starting point is 00:23:21 is there an app out there that does this? And if not, there should be. Comment below, email me, hit me up. Let's get this thing going. I want to do it. It would be so much easier. And lastly, you know, with the holidays right around the corner, it's holiday movie season.
Starting point is 00:23:42 And, you know, Home Alone, one and two are a big one in our house. But overall, I like to do movie nights with the family every couple weeks. You know, we just pick like a tradition. My wife and I pick a traditional movie, like the sandlot, something like that, just to show the kids, you know, because they're so used to, this YouTube and shorts and reels and we want to make sure we preserve the traditional movies. And I got to say, Willie Wonka in the Chocolate Factory is definitely one of my favorites, the original.
Starting point is 00:24:13 And I keep forgetting, and I think Good News York needs to take a trip to Laosville, New York. Does anyone know where Laosville is? We're talking way up, Watertown area, right? Way up. We're basically in Canada. Because guess what? In Lalville, New York, there is a veterinarian. And I don't know his name because I forget the actor's name, but he is the actor that played Charlie and Willie Wonka. And I don't know. I know some people in Central New York and in New York State in general know that.
Starting point is 00:24:45 But I don't think enough people know that. And I'm not saying go harass and bother this poor man because I'm sure that's probably what he gets all day every day. But I do think that we need to find this man and see if we can get him on for an interview. Because for those of us who grew up with Willie Wonka in the Chocolate Factory, or some people call it Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. I don't know the difference. I don't know if there is a different. It's a huge nostalgia piece.
Starting point is 00:25:18 And to think that Charlie is just chilling up in Northern New York being a vet, you've got to find this guy. because I would love to interview him. I mean, I don't even know what question. I don't want to be the guy that asks like the dumb questions of like, what was it like working with Gene Wilder?
Starting point is 00:25:40 Or was it real chocolate in the river? No, I want to just talk to the guy and hear about his life and if veterinarian was always the plan or, but yeah, if you didn't know that little fun fact. Anyways, I'm rambling at this point. because it's just me, your pal Mike Brindisi. You can follow me on all socials at Mike B TV.
