Alright so for the Christmas afternoon hopefully everybody got the good gifts they wanted to get
and all the other fun stuff that goes along with the tradition of Christmas.
So today I'm going to do my boot process. We're going to do PS2. So lots of we're going to do PS2
fats. There's lots of motherboard models in those so I'm eager to see how the original ones.
So the first three original are 10 bottom screw.
And those either are the 004, the 005, which is similar but different.
And then the 006 is also 10 bottom screw.
Each one of those has what i call the double stack motherboard um so i'm interested to see
how those boot and then we'll go into the rest of them after that so let's do ps2 fat
004 motherboard boot the 006 has like a daughter board to it.
The 004 and 005 do not.
Let's see if we get,
see how we do here.
The 004 mother first,
the early revision of the original PlayStation 2.
Okay.
So we should have a little bit more technology now
compared to the boots we've been doing.
I find it fun, actually.
I've learned a lot of stuff.
Just different CPUs and stuff like that that I didn't know anything about.
All right, so PS2 Fat 004 Motherboard, referred to the early revision,
had some distinct hardware characteristics below as the boot process.
So this chip was called an EE, an Emotion Engine CPU.
I heard that this chip was also on the Hubble Space Station.
And then I just read, I was reading yesterday about the PS2 chip being used for something, for computing.
So it boots to ROM BIOS.
The BIOS is a firmware embedded in the PS2 that initializes the hardware.
Okay, so there's a hardware test, self-test, post. CPU motion engine graphics synthesizer GS RAM input output processor if any of the critical
boots fail you get an error ROM verification the boot verifies that the integrity of the DV drive
firmware disk check in boot priority it boots from the memory card slot. Looks for bootable
applications. Homebrew like FreeMac boot but that would be later. DVD looks for a hard disk.
In the console with the hard disk expansion the BIOS checks the hard drive for bootable software i actually have the free boot
on a hard disk in the back of a ps2 fat pretty fun ps2 system menu region lock check bios checks for
north america japan or pal kernel and game execution loads PlayStation 2 kernel. Is that the word kernel refers to?
It's more programming.
Hands over the control to the game execution code.
Key components of the PS2 model 4 is the EE motion engine.
Operates at 294 megahertz on the early PS2 models.
Graphic synthesizer responsible for rendering visuals
ipo io processor iop manages input output disk drive ram early ram on was features 32 megabytes
of rram ram bus dynamic ram double stack design there it is still features the double stack design which letter
which was later replaced with a a single uh power supply is integrated internally
the slims had the external fast did not backwards compatibility of a ps1 backwards
reliable models like the ps4, known for disk drive issues.
Freeboot optional homebrew includes those with $4,000 can boot software like Freeboot with a memory card.
Bypassing region lock.
Summary of boot step-ups.
Power on bootable media check.
Region lock.
Kernel initializationization game and software
launch the PS4 was represented early was the 005 motherboard any different. So we'll go for 004 and 005.
They both have the rope cable.
Where the 006 has a ribbon cable
but longer than on the other models after it.
005 was an incremental version of 004.
Same boot process process identical RAM everything is
identical I'll just kind of blow through it just difference between 004 and 005
005 motherboard often shipped with updated optical drive and lens assembly
so the system itself with 005 had had to try to solve the read issues.
Same double stack.
Some of the discrete components were replaced with caps and resistors.
Formal difference, some 005 may have a minor firmware update.
Because there's no way to
update firmware as like when you get to a ps3 no changes performance okay so it
gives me the breakdown between 004 and 005 laser assembly prone to errors
improved
RD RAM standard 32 005 more efficient on RAM modules so the RAM is a little bit better
motherboard design double stack simplified double stack so firmware was an early BIOS
was a slightly newer BIOS reliability better over reliability okay this is then the 006 motherboard it's good if i already know them all then i can now i'm just
getting details i must have had ps2s oh my god i had to have like a thousand of them over the last
few years and there's also one ps2 fat we're going to ask him about. My buddy Zippy here.
Usually the Japan and US models are always the same, everything,
except for one model on PS2 Fats.
It's the 15,000 model of the Japan.
Instead of a hard drive in the back, it has a PC card, which I've never seen.
So that's the only one that's good.
And it's also 10 bottom screw, yet it's not double stacked all right so the ps2 fat uh oh six might represent another step in evolution
compared to the 004 process here's how that differs from the other chains because remember
this this has a a um a daughter board to it the 06 but still considered in the 10 bottom screw realm
was the first the first big three here so the emotions hardware CPU GPU RAM
BIOS execution GS 32 RAM memory card region lock cause I'm trying to see what the difference is.
Single stack mother design, double stack design removed.
So I thought, I thought that would be, oh no it was single but it had the single layer
design but it had a daughter board to it of some kind that I've reduced likelihood of disk errors try to fix the disk drive problem which really never got fixed
oh six retains 32 megabytes RD RAM more efficient configurations are used for
better stability but same performance Backwards compatibility Including
The 006 motherboard retains backwards compatibility
With PS1 games
And peripherals
Includes a SCPH-102H1
Hard drive expansion
For use with games like
Final Fantasy
Improved optical Homebrewing mod Free McBoot fantasy so dealings at hard drive backs improved optical home brewing mod free
McBoot so the double stack single layer so now gives me all three comparisons
oh four or five oh six it's like the RAM went up a little bit per each one for
more updates was a little bit more backwards compatibility
excellent maintain the same boot process this is says the o6 had a daughter board
no six had a daughter board
You're absolutely right includes adorable, which is a distinct feature
Compared to the earlier versions of the fat
Like we're gonna outsmart my buddies at be here
All these to add something to it
It's pretty fun. Oh
Yeah, so it had breaks... breaks down the daughterboard,
the boot process.
The cable, the long
ribbon cable, power
cable goes to the daughterboard
and then cables from the
daughterboard run to the motherboard.
Self check.
So everything's pretty much the same.
It's an I.O. function.
Handles, inputs, outputs, checks. check so everything's pretty much the same let's see it's an i o function handles input outputs
checks the key role the daughter board was the disk drive controller it was the disk driver
try and then the disk drive connected to that daughter board so it helped management of the
disk drive advantage of daughterboard design when you control is related responsibility separate so
improve the reliability of the console allows to experiment different configurations compared for double stack move the
separate daughter board for the DV Drive repairable easier to remove the drawer
of a daughter board is not taking those things by even completely taken apart
optimize the single layer design motherboard and juice door okay so now we'll go to the
PS2
010
and
013 motherboards
so that would be the board with the multicolored
cables
to the disk drive
okay the 010 and 013 cables to the disk drive.
Okay, the 010 and 013 later revisions.
I believe it's before the 015.
After the 010 and the 013, those are very similar.
You can use either or.
Then from there, it changes to 0 1 0 0 1 9 and 0 2 2 which can be interchangeable but these two here have different disk
drives and stuff so let's see fully integrated design both owner fully
integrated single board design. 010 some issues
with disk
refinements for the disk error issue.
Updated BIOS.
Changes improved. These updates
not only experience removal of
certain components, such
as a hard drive expansion port.
That's what we've been doing.
The 010 motherboard, single layer I'm the 010 motherboard single both single
layer 0 1 3 0 1 0 1 3 is better obviously power efficiency was more
efficient in the 0 1 3 minor updates back to cloud ability meeting the same
performance of earlier motion engines back availability reliability homebrewing mcboot
so then you look at the 006 compared to the 0100 and three improved just it's like a stepping stone
up whereas a lot of like i was doing sega yesterday and everything was a step down
people got worse and worse they were. They were getting cheaper and cheaper.
So here they're actually going the right way.
The final early FAT hardware.
The same brute process.
Okay, so then now we go from...
Then we go to the PS2 FAT.
015. 019, and 022 boot process.
So now we've just, and then the model numbers of those are like 39001,
3001R, but the R can also be the 010
or 013 or it can be an 015
alright so
fat models 015
019 and 022
later revisions
the boot process remain the same
just amazing I can just type anything in and it just
pumps out all this information for me.
Outstanding.
I can learn stuff so fast now. It's pretty cool.
Same thing as
emotional engine.
Console had power on self-test.
RAM's the same.
Graphic synthesizer.
RD RAM.
Same thing. memory card,
drive, hard drive,
if installed,
game system and load manual.
So nothing, you wouldn't see this difference
if you would have bought one of the other,
only if you went inside.
And if you look at my buddy Zippy here,
to learn how it's,
there is some differences
reduced heat output
Supplier it bit a little bit better power supply
so the oh one oh one five oh
Oh two two also the oh one. Oh and the oh one three
All of the power supply with the components facing down
When you take the bottom off at the back the bottom next one we're gonna do is 5000 model
and that has a components facing at you and that will be the last revision minor
of BIOS updates 015 representing continuum of design introduced from the 013.
So the 015 was after the 013.
The 019 was a little bit better.
015 says lots of issues.
022 is the final revision of the FAT series, but it's not actually.
It's actually got the 5000 model yet. Which is 023 and 026.
Can I say everything by the motherboard name?
Not by the actual console.
Because sometimes the board in there can differ.
Like the 3900 model can be a 019 or it could be an 020.
The regular 3001 model without 10 bottom screws eight bottom screws usually 015 but sometimes it can be um an 013 an 010 or 013 yeah so repairability was high excellent power supply more efficient
okay and then it compares the 0101013 to the other three that we just talked about.
More reliable.
So they went forward.
I just can't believe how backwards Sega went.
Wow.
You got crappy stuff at the end there.
Okay, now.
The last models are 023 and 026.
023 and 026.
So you're giving...
Oh, now I just gotta...
Lately, when I've been doing my zippy here,
it gives me two options, and I have to pick one.
Like, do I like this one better than the other one?
And I honestly really can't tell the difference.
The one on the right always seems to be a little bit better.
All right, that would have confused me.
Because now I lost my train of thought here.
It's really pumping out some stuff on this one. I'm just gonna prefer that one so I can get to me. Because now I lost my train of thought here. It's really pumping out some stuff on this one.
I'm just going to prefer
that one so I can get to it.
Alright, so...
The summary. Oh, that's the summary.
I've got to go way back here.
Oh, that's way, way too far.
I'm just keeping
one thread of all my
boots. But eventually
I have to delete it because
you run out of memory go figure
I was daughter board well I did something weird and then I have to try
to go back to where I was now because when you ask it a question to give you
just all this information instantly and you
have to kind of catch up that's all one five we just did that um all right there we go okay
fat 023 and 026 mother of the final revisions he said final revisions last time but that was not now it is same across all fat models
the boot boot process ram's the same everything's the same so also with the uh 5 000 model they came
with a network card so there's actually a 5001 n i had the card in the the adapter on the back. And also it has the power button,
a smaller power button attached to the disk drive on the front.
And like I said, the components, if you open it up from the bottom,
they're facing you.
As of where the 015, the 010 through 019 are facing down.
So I'll ask about that in a second region lock so everything is the same integrated single board improved disk drive I'll ask about the slash and to better
components so you obviously for any system except for sega definitely you would want to get the last of the
last model usually so 023 026 more reliable drives final bios for fat series repeatability was high
motion backwards compatibility so everything is pretty much okay so what's slash n so let's go let's do slash n 5000 slash N.
Yeah, so the 5000 slash N.
Didn't quite do what I wanted it to do.
Basically just added a...
I should have said 50011 I did back so it although let's ask about vision peaches oh yeah well that's the other it also had a
built-in IR receiver so you could use a remote on the slash end that was the
other thing that's right whereas all the other thing. That's right.
Whereas all the other ones you needed.
The dongle.
To plug that in.
And then you plugged your.
Remote whatever it was.
But the slash N had the RR.
So the.
Yeah.
That's what.
I thought all the 5000s had that IR,
but it's just a slash N.
Built-in.
They had a DVD player version 3.0 in that, too.
And then, finally, let's ask about improved quiet, fully supported it with adapter improved laser Japan like a 004 005
but single board
let's see what it says
alright
Playstation 15000
early version
is an interesting version
it bridges the gap between
the first PS2 versions,
like 00405.
That one's cool.
I want to find out about that PC card.
It's 15 single layer.
So none of these changed any
specific hardware.-bore design
that's way down there I just move a little bit and I lose it I heard it's
always single here's the breakdown of that. Everything's the same.
Biolock.
It has a Japanese Biolock.
I've got a couple of those.
They're pretty fun.
I haven't got one to fully work yet.
I've got some cool Japan games.
So when in doubt,
if it's a really high-end game,
you can't find it,
PS1, PS2,
buy the Japan version.
It's basically the same. It plays in English most of the time. And it's a really high-end game, you can't find it, PS1, PS2, buy the Japan version. It's basically the same.
It plays in English most of the time.
And it's a lot cheaper, so just get yourself a...
That's why you have to have yourself a Japan PS1, PS2.
Once you get into PS3, then there's no region, I don't believe.
Just a PS1, PS2.
Same with earlier Wii's.
Wii's, you can get that.
Gamecube
N64
remember N64
was just an N64
you can play
either Japan
or
you know
US games on
an N64 motherboard
just take the cartridge slot out
just a blocker
little blocker there
alright it says
lax refinements
later models 0 oh six oh new
power supplies optical what is the pc card what is a pc card Compared to the hard drive on the back.
Let's see what it says.
What is the PC card compared to the hard drive on the back?
So it's the only one that has that PC card thingy.
It's called a PCMCI slot.
Found primarily..., oh there's
actually a few models that have it.
Found primarily
on the Japanese PS2
10,000, 15,000,
18,000 model.
It was designed to connect
external storage devices and adapters
to expansion ports similar to
a hard drive.
So it's called the PCMCIA slot.
Network adapter for connecting storage devices.
Why was it replaced?
The PC interface was phased out in the late 80s,
starting with the 3000 model in favor of the more hard drive.
It was slower.
The PCMCIA standard was slower and less reliable
for sustained data.
PS2 better trade networks
are more robust.
Hard drive
bay purpose
is to text expansion.
But you can't just stick a hard drive and just save games to that.
I didn't know that. Hard drive is only for certain games.
And for
that adapter adapter PlayStation BB
broadband network and the ps2 adapter so the PS card was only in a few of the
Japan early ones the slower homebrew was limited game support was minimal so that's pretty cool all right
I think it's about it all right so that's my fun little boot up today you
got to learn about all the different motherboards of the ps2 fat I believe I
covered them all took me a long time to learn all that stuff and then now I can
learn a little bit more from just typing in a few things here.
But learning by doing is the way to do it.
And I put myself through at-home gaming school here for about seven years.
Playing around with lots of stuff.
And that's how I learned about all these.
PS2 took me a long time to learn about.
There's so many different variations.
And I still have missed a few different
thingies but all right so you guys have the rest of a good christmas and then we'll we'll all be
talking about the new year all right i'll talk to you later all right bye
